DISCLAIMER: this is just a very subjective list of young actors (young: born after 1990) who i think have really diverse and impressive performances. while not all my ult actors jj krissanapoom, up poompat... are present, i don't think of them any less. just that these are people who i've been most impressed with their transformation from one role to another.

1. NONKUL CHANON

I really will praise Nonkul every chance I get. I do think Nonkul is an actor who is constantly trying to hone his craft regardless of his experiece. I also like that as a member of THACCA, Nonkul is really active in initiating capacity building activities with his working group for the industry like these TOSAA roundtable discussions.

2. TOR THANAPOB

I love how much Tor relentlessly work with the thought of he could retire anytime soon. I remember earlier this year tracking to see which series has more filming queues (Nonkul's Mouse or Tor's My Cherie Amour because both series were over 70 filming queues). And yet immediately after MCA, Tor jumped directly into filming Spare Me Your Mercy so we could get it in November 28 (NEXT WEEK). He's just so hardworking and I love that these days he's been slowly picking his scripts so that his repertoire can be diversified (so he doesn't get boxed as the "actor who's only good at dramatic/intense roles). My Cherie Amour really proved that he's perfect for romcoms and I sincerely hope its successful performance has given him more confidence to do more comedy works in the future.

3. ICE NATARA

I've found in making this list and the actors whose performances have astounded me are often the ones who don't have too many projects at all, or they really take time to pick and choose their scripts. Even though he got his first start as a model, Ice has really proven himself through performances in GDH film One For The Road or Netflix TH series Delete. I seriously got a huge whiplash when I watched Delete because I couldn't believe the same actor playing that bulky villainous plantation owner is the same cancer-battling protagonist in One For The Road.

like allow me to just add one more gif because him filming Delete right after One For The Road is exactly the reason why Ice Natara totally deserved both the Suphannahong Award and Nataraj Award for these roles of his.

4. PEACH PACHARA

Born into the fourth richest family in Thailand, you'd think Peach Pachara wouldn't survive the nepo baby actor allegations. Oh but he did, not only did he survive, I think he's succesfully made a career for himself in doing everything that he loves like running his own snack business (anyone has tried his Potato Corner yet?), composing music scores for his series, and starring in whatever series he wants at his own pace.

Unlike the other actors on this list, I think Peach particularly excels at his "bad boy, asshole, occasionally with a heart of gold" character typecasting that I actually don't mind most of his roles being in the same color. Peach always gets the best characterisations for his roles so even if its a nonsensical comedy like Bat War or angsty lakorn like The Root or heist drama like The Believers, I can always trust Peach to deliver fully and exactly what his character promises in the first place.

just leaving these here bc he's such a sassy little rich dude. i adore him.

5. JAMES TEERADON

Love that James has been fully investing in his culinary journey for the past 3 years but he never really leaves us and sometimes come back with an interesting script. This year alone, we finally got James back in heist drama The Believers and time-loop romcom Love Stuck. Similar to others on this list, James really takes time choosing his acting projects but one thing I know is that he will never settle for an uninspiring script.

6. AELM BHUMIBHAT

My first introduction to Aelm was through 2019 GDH film Happy New Year. But it was actually his performance in Doi Boy that made me deep dive into his filmography and I'm just completely in awed of his acting methodologies and his chosen projects. Not always something digestable, often very niche and indie but Aelm is always killing his roles, an absolute scene stealer. His conversation with Pat Chayanit solidified him on this list for me. I can't wait for more fans to discover him through Spare Me Your Mercy. Personally though, I'm actually more excited to watch him play a cult-ish villain? in the Buddhist themed episode of Tomorrow and I (coming to Netflix this December 4)

7. UD AWAT

i don't think i need to say anything about ud awat. his series of posts (1, 2, 3, his goodbye post devastated me) talking about his transformation into Sorn for Doi Boy is testament to his love for acting. i'm actually forever grateful that Doi Boy came at a time when ud was considering leaving acting altogether because it truly "reignited [his] love for acting" for him and that passion in the film is just so palpable.

8. FILM THANAPAT

no words. i love this man. film is truly one31's most reliable leading actor. end of story. i don't think one31 will ever let him go but i do hope one day netflix thailand will score him for an original series because i sincerely believe he can bring even more to the table with a series that isn't written within the constraints of one31 script team.

honorable mentions: GEE SUTTHIRAK

I'd say Gee was my favorite discovery this year because I binged so much of his works like Sweet Sensory, Terror Tuesday: Extreme, The Cheery Lee Village Headman, The Betrayal, My Boo. My only qualm is that I don't think his other Workpoint lakorns (6th Sense Agency, The Scent of Hers) are that good but like they seem to love keeping Gee busy. Waiting to see Gee in Tomorrow and I, @ netflix thailand pls keep this man busy I beg

SKY WONGRAVEE

this cockroach scene alone earns him a spot on this list. ngl i would love to see him back in gdh led productions but i don't think we can get that back soon :')

BRIGHT RAPHEEPHONG

i feel kinda robbed that bright worked so hard this year, filming THREE projects consectively (two series and a film) but only the film came out. ch3 refuses to air his shelved lakorn as well. i have no hope for monomax in making his series available with engsub but i will definitely do my best in giffing his series with linn mashannoad and ken phupoom next year.

POOM PHURIPAN

the reason i hesitate adding poom in here is because i feel like his acting approach is still very instinctive and he hasn't really had many chances to develop his own methodologies to approaching his characters because his roles at ch8 were pretty much the same every time. it's really obvious that he's got potential and he just needs the right script, producers and director to bring out the acting skills he's gained from starring in dramatic lakorns. regardless, he obviously goes on the list because he's given my favorite acting performance of the year. period.

final note: you can very much tell that i'm biased because more than half of this list is gdh/nadao actors, but thank you for sending this ask nonetheless so i can share my love for these actors.

okay i probably should not go down this rabbit hole but i think i deserve to do some andreil proposal/wedding headcanon because who cares!!

this is going to be inspired by these three posts because i cannot stop thinking about them

also the usual disclaimer: if this is bad or goes against your own personal headcanon....so be it<3

when andrew finally accepts that this is a THIS, he and neil do not talk about The Future

both of them know how quickly things can change and how you can't plan for anything in life because shit happens and life isn't fair and people always hurt you...so they just keep living in the present

but after a while it kind of becomes clear that neither one of them is going anywhere, even though neither of them actually believes it

more than that, they keep running into problems

like when neil plays a game for Court and ends up getting crunched against the wall and has to go to the ER and andrew has no idea where they took him because he wasn't fast enough to follow him and then when he finally gets to the hospital no one will let him back there and then when he almost attacks a nurse, kevin finally intervenes and lays on the charm to get the two of them back there to see him

and when they finally get in the room, neil is knocked the fuck out and that's when andrew decides that yeah fuck that we can't keep doing this

he doesn't tell neil he's decided this because neil will probably argue or try to run or come up with a bunch of excuses or worse he'll say yes

andrew asks renee for advice, and she doesn't make a big deal out of it because she knows that's the best way to get andrew to not want to do anything

so she decides to be casual

and by casual she actually just tells andrew that she had a conversation with katelyn that sounded like she and aaron were maybe thinking about getting engaged soon

andrew picks up his phone, intending to ask neil right there, but renee stops him and forces him to reconsider this proposal to at least do it in person

even so, there isn't a lot of fanfare

neil can sense something is off immediately when andrew walks in the door but he doesn't push him because he knows that's not the best way to get anything out of andrew

andrew won't look at him at all, doesn't say a word, just sits down next to him on the couch

neil: "drew?"

andrew:

neil:

andrew: "i don't want to wait for kevin to get me to you"

neil doesn't really know what he's even talking about, so he just kind of stares at him, waiting

andrew, actively staring at the wall: "this is not going to be some kind of fairytale shit and i refuse to get down on one fucking knee so yes or no?"

neil, finally having his lightbulb moment: "don't ask stupid questions"

andrew rolls his eyes because of course he'd get stuck with this one: "yes or no, junkie"

neil: "i already told you. it's always yes with you."

andrew: "this is different"

neil: "not the way i see it"

andrew: "this means no running away"

neil: "i stopped running a long time ago"

andrew really is going to kill this guy one day

they don't discuss real details until a few days later when neil asks if they have to have a "real" wedding or if they can just go to a courthouse and getting the papers signed

andrew was under the impression that that WAS a real wedding and thus it was the only thing they would be doing regardless

the two of them settle on a date — only a few days out because hey, might as well just get it done because "who knows the next time some fuckface is gonna kick your ass and land you in the hospital"

at first they decide they aren't going to tell anybody, but then renee asks andrew if he ever actually talked to neil and so she becomes the only person to know about this weird wedding thing

she keeps trying to convince them to tell everybody else, but that does not go over well

neil decides it's probably best if he dresses kind of nice for his wedding (even though he's a thousand percent certain that andrew is just gonna show up in his usual attire) and since he doesn't want to tell nicky what's going on (for everyone's sake), he calls wymack instead thinking he can just vaguely ask a few questions and wymack'll stay out of his business

wymack: "somebody better be dead for you to be calling me this late"

neil: "what are you supposed to wear to a wedding?"

wymack: "who the hell is getting married?"

neil: "me"

wymack: "are you fucking with me?"

neil: "andrew is sick of asking kevin to get him into my hospital rooms"

wymack: "maybe if you stopped going to the fucking hospital—"

even though neil didn't think he needed wymack there, he unexpectedly asks if coach'll be his best man.....and even though wymack is so sick of these idiot kids shortening his life-span, he can't help but say yes

so that is how the four of them end up at the courthouse, waiting for the judge to make it all official

that is, until andrew gets a phone call

neil doesn't see who it is when he picks up, he just watches andrew as he answers straightfaced

andrew: "we're at the courthouse....getting married.......coach is here.....no."

the others look at each other, but andrew keeps staring at the wall ahead of him

neil nudges his knee: "who was that?"

andrew: "nicky"

There's no structure to this (I did say I would be rambling to be fair)

Him and Seth are twins and his parents don't remember who is actually older but they switch it depending on the situations

Ex. "Respect your older brother!" vs "You have to look out for your younger brother."

Pick a lane.

I personally hc he's FTM and did shit like cut his hair and steal Seth's clothes until his parents just gave up and bought what he'd wear (It's not like they actually give a shit about him cuz they're the WORST)

I think SnB was like fairly short lived? I think that's canon but it's MTL there's no reason fucking timeline. Regardless. He left at 16 but when it fell apart he had to move back in with his parents and that's when he finished HS and then got the fuck out of there again.

He, god bless him, will never fucking learn to give up on his parents. (I relate. It's hard accepting your family is shitty and harder to cut them out) He will keep reaching out, he helps his parents when they ask, he still throws Seth more than he deserves now and then.

He wanted to have more of a leadership role when Dethklok formed given his experience but found it really easy to for the most part let Nathan take the lead.

Him and Magnus for SURE had history. They got messy divorce written all over them. He thought Magnus flipping out like he did came out of no where but the more he thought about it he kind of realized he'd been making excuses for him. He was his friend and lover Just like with family it's hard to accept someone you love might just fucking suck. (Disclaimer: I'm not saying Magnus as a character is the same to Pickles shitty family. He's a really interesting character and I like exploring what we didn't get the chance to see)

He did not fuck with Skwisgaar when he first showed up. Skwisgaar was younger and kind of a diva who would clash with Magnus and that bled into their interactions. It pretty quickly sorted itself out after a few months though but man their fights were not fun to be around for.

They would both hide each others shit (Pickles kept throwing out any coffee that entered that apartment. Skwisgaar would fucking flush whatever Pickles had around and even figured out he had a stash in the car? Fucking nightmare. Nathan had to put his foot down)

He treated Murderface like a little brother when he joined because he related to having a shitty home life and Murderface was just barely 18 when he joined he was a fucking baby someone HAD to look out for him (Reminder I like to ignore MF being second oldest cuz fucking look at him in preklok. That's a child. Don't give him booze)

He didn't actually grow out of treating him like a younger brother but his soft spot for him has hardened over time (He loves him! But fuck man he can get annoying)

Emotions hit him really hard. Man starts his day with his glass half full so he is just spilling over most of the time.

He has ADHD

hiya! so i wanted to pop in because of the whole changbin exclusionist writer thing. i'm not a writer but i do still feel like there's some things i wanna say about this whole situation.

i'm gonna put a disclaimer here just to say that i don't have that many details on what exactly this person writes or says. this goes out to anyone who excludes one of the members just because you don't find them attractive

personally, i'm attracted to all the members except for changbin and seungmin. but that doesn't mean that i love them any less. i read that the author said something along the lines of "oh, i just don't want him to rail me like the others haha" and yeah, that's completely okay, but what isn't okay is saying that you're a stay and are ot8 when you aren't.

these guys, all of them, deserve the world and they've worked their asses off to be where they are today. so yeah. it's genuinely completely valid if you don't feel attracted to one, multiple or any of the members. but that doesn't give you the right to be an asshole. do you really think that the other members would like what you're doing? that they want to see one of their best friends, their family, be put down like this time and time again?

tldr; if you hate on any of the members just because you don't find them attractive, go outside and touch some grass ffs

i truly agree with this. it baffles my mind to think that this is normal in some people's heads.

like i genuinely could not IMAGINE a world in which i was like "yeah im just not gonna write for him bc i don't know him like that since i'm not attracted to him & don't pay attention to him." like that truly takes some balls that i would be MORTIFIED to show fr.

i think everyone has those members that they love & adore, but that they don't necessarily think of in any sort of sexual way and that is completely FINE. completely NORMAL. for example, although innie is turning into a v manly toast, he is my baby sister's age, so it can be hard for me to see him that way sometimes. like that's a baby for real, you know??? even though he's not even 2 years younger so it's kinda stupid 😭 just that mental block kinda thing from seeing people his age that i've always put into a "too young" category my whole life. but at the same time, i can appreciate the fact that he is objectively grown & handsome & has so much sex appeal. and i genuinely think the world of him and know that he should be included in what i write... bc he is inherently just as sexy as the other members & just because i have biases, it doesn't take away from that fact. and REGARDLESS, i appreciate him in stray kids. never in a million years would i leave him out.

it's completely normal to have biases & members you're more attracted to than others. & if you don't feel comfortable writing for them *sexually*, then okay, wtv do your thing. but to not include them AT ALL (even in a non-sexual way) in a post including everyone else in skz? i'm sorry, but it really does scream having no respect for them in the group. also screams that you don't actually give a fuck about them as individuals, but rather this is just about you wanting to fuck them. if you don't appreciate bin & don't write for him at all bc you don't wanna fuck him, then you're not ot8. just say that. do your thing, but own up to it being shallow. aint never heard a bitch say anything negative ab bin's personality or talent, so that sure as hell is NOT why you don't wanna write ab him 😭😂 i mean unless you really don't jive w his personality... which is all i have to know really lol.

point blank: just because you do not find someone attractive does not make them "less-than", nor does it support why you couldn't write for them in a non-sexual way. if it's superficial for you, then it's superficial for you & i'm sure there will still be people that support that. just don't go acting like it's "i just don't really know him" when you've had just as much exposure to him as the others. don't make lame-ass excuses.

like imagine being in your own idol group that means so much to you. your fans are your livelihood & mean the absolute world to you. you love them more than anything else and center so much of your life around giving them what you think they'd want. but then you see stuff like this. posts including all of your members EXCEPT for you. how would you feel? would you feel appreciated at all? left out simply because you're not as "sexually attractive" as the other members? literally not even ACKNOWLEDGED until pressed about it.

but people grow up and learn that saying "this community wasn't what i thought it would be" when everyone is collectively telling you that you're problematic... hopefully to god at some point you'd believe them. it's not everyone else's fault that most people are ot8 & you're not, thus not supporting your work. sorry if you expected a bunch of people who love changbin to suddenly not give a fuck, but it's quite the opposite 🫶🏼

Random ask, but I just wanna say thank you for your Starscream fics! I love how you commit to making him happy and get a better life, especially tfp starscream. Your fics are always a joy to read because I know going in, things are gonna be better for him.

Thank you! TFP starscream has an extremely special place in my heart. I know that he is evil and obviously not a good person, but as I've discussed in the past, I think that the writing was just unfair with him, especially in regards to how he was treated and his 'redemption'. I can't get into it now or this will be way too long. but Starscream deserved better and he deserved friend and a support group , and better writing idk.

Casual disclaimer that im not trying to excuse his actions (because apparently people think having empathy for him and wanting better, like all the other deceptions got is excusing his actions- media literacy has left the room i guess), but i just wish that he had a better life toward the end and actually got redemption.

i don't think the writers cared about him nor knew what to do, nor saw him as anything other than comic relief which was extremely unforutnate given what we were presented of his character.

regardless, i try my best to give him a happy life, because despite trying to do better in tfp things just fell to shit for him.

(Before my rant, I have to point out how telling/revealing the OP's "satire" is with how she went about it. First of all, the whole concept of wanting to make fun of women who are learning about non-liberal feminism for the first time, or are in a relationship with men by choice: why? Strange idea. Unwell mentality. Over 13k likes for a woman mocking other women. And it's "feminist" somehow, because you're on "Level 5 Misandry" and think normies not even getting on Step 1 are inherently stupid or antifeminist or something. I'm getting ahead of myself.

But the super revealing part to me is that the satire isn't even correctly imitating the thing you claim to be mocking!!!

Women cannot practice 4B while being in a male relationship, yes, anyone who claims that is misinformed. [Which, btw, again, being misinformed is not something worth mocking!!! If you think it is, literally why would women want to learn about radical feminism if all they see from the community is you guys making fun of women who are trying to learn??? But again, I'm getting ahead of myself.]

The satirical woman being mocked here isn't even claiming to practice 4B though!!! You're literally just mocking the concept of women trying to learn about feminism, regardless of whether they even get anything wrong about it, and/or the concept of women being happy in their relationships with men, regardless of whether he's abusive.)

Every time I come back to this website of feels like there's another round of radfems on here showing their claimed female solidarity is on a razor-thin edge for "normie" women (if it exists at all).

How is your feminism for women or helping women if you view the vast majority of women as stupid/traitors/deserving of misogyny/the main cause of misogyny's perpetuation/etc??? You make fun of TRAs for sidelining all women by centering men in their "feminism," meanwhile you're sidelining all but a small handful of women you only know online (that you probably wouldn't get along with and would also sideline if you knew everything about them irl).

If you care more about hating men (and the women who love them) than meeting women where they're at*, your "feminist mindset" is just as male-centered as liberal feminism.

But thank you pillarsalt and women like you on here that are speaking up about it. It's upsetting it has to be said, and even more so that those of us saying it genuinely feel stressed/worried to do so, but those things are proof that it needs to happen. I and so many other women left the TRA community because we had serious concerns about it (especially regarding the treatment of women in it) that we knew were forbidden to ask about, and if you don't see the similarities here, and believe "well I actually care about women unlike TRAs so my feminism can never be misguided or misogynistic like theirs", then idk what to tell you.

I have yet to hear a convincing argument as to how the mindset of "the only guaranteed solution to male violence is having all women stop interacting with men period, and if they don't then the continuation of misogyny is their fault and any abuse they suffer is deserved" is not literally the same logic as "the only guaranteed way to prevent pregnancy is for women to never have sex with men period, and if they do and get pregnant then they need to carry the fetus to term because they need to suffer the consequences of their actions."

*Disclaimer I shouldn't need to have: I am not talking about women who directly cause and/or facilitate violence and abuse against other women and girls (and even then their actions, as well as their intentions/motivations and the scope of them, are not at all comparable to men doing the same). I'm talking about nearly every woman on Earth: women who have never heard of Atwood or Dworkin, women who hate having to keep up with the trappings femininity but hate the thought of not knowing who they are without it even more, all of the world's Jakeys' girlfriends. If your feminism doesn't care about most women, if your praxis involves mocking women in abusive relationships and women in happy ones and single women who want to date men alike, who the hell is it even for.

Gonna be honest, maybe I'm missing something, but this doesn't seem like a big deal to me. She's saying she supports 4B, not that she's somehow participating while still married to a man. You're all going to be very disappointed if you expect every normie hetero woman who learns about 4B to immediately get a divorce from the husband she obviously loves lol, no matter how corny and delusional you think she is about it.

A little disclaimer: because I'm not a native speaker I did some research to see if I understood both terms correctly and from what I was able to find the word "himbo" is usually a more positive, endearing term, meanwhile "bimbo" was mostly used in a misogynistic, derogatory way. However there's also a "bimbo movement" (love the name) which focuses on reclaiming the term and is all about women celebrating their femininity and sexuality and so that's how I chose to portray it, since on this blog we're all for objectifying the shit out of fictional hot villains but not actual human beings. So thank you for the request as it gave me an opportunity to learn something new 💜 Also I chose Alice in borderland, since I only recently rewatched it and have it fresh in my mind. when he first saw you he couldn't keep his eyes off of you but he kept his distance

he considered you way, way out of his league with how attractive, confident and extroverted you were and he didn't think someone like you would even notice someone like him

especially since he knew how many people at the Beach were interested in you, some of which way more powerful than him, way more..experienced

but as time went by he witnessed all those people use you and take advantage of your kindness and naivety, something he knew you didn't deserve

he couldn't stand that despite all that you were still kind and understanding, and put everyone else before yourself

that you still trusted everyone, oblivious to their true intentions

but he still didn't have the confidence to stop it, to confront your bullies or at least reach out and convince you to cut those people off

he didn't believe he had anything to offer you

luckily for him one day you were finally put in the same group for a game, it was a clubs game so you had to work together in order to survive

after the game the two of you would hang out more and more often, getting more comfortable around each other

you learned a lot from each other, mostly about healthy boundaries, self respect and how important it is to say no to people sometimes

and most importantly that you both deserve so much better than how other people were treating you

Usagi:

she is quite the opposite of Arisu

she doesn't care what you look like or how many people interact with you, she will not stand there and watch you get bullied and/or insulted

she's smart, she immediately noticed you can get quite oblivious and you trust people way too easily

even people who she knows only want to take advantage of you

she knows it's not that you can't stand up for yourself, it's that you don't see a reason to do so since you always see the good in people regardless of how they treat you or others

she admires you for that but she also knows the Borderland, and especially the Beach, is not a good place for someone like you

you and Arisu are the only two people she trusts in this world so she does her best to protect you

which most of the time means staying under the radar, she knows most of the people there are not to mess with

on days when you don't have to play she would teach you self defense and survival techniques

you would get distracted very easily but you tried your best so she lets it slide every time

she never admits it but spending time with you is so refreshing, after meeting so many assholes in the Borderland she's happy to have found a kind soul like you

even just being in your presence makes her feel at peace

Chishiya:

at first he wouldn't pay you any attention

he didn't see you as an intellectual match, much less as a challenge

he would look down on you and talk to you in a patronizing way, if at all

yes, he did find you attractive but you weren't the only attractive person at the Beach

it wasn't until you put yourself in between him and Niragi when the militant started to harass Chishiya for fun that he started to look at you in a different way

that meant sleepovers, giving each other makeovers and participating in every karaoke night at the Beach

somehow you even managed to convince Chishiya to join you one time

it involved a lot of alcohol and he refused to do it ever again after it turned out Niragi filmed the whole thing, including Chishiya throwing up all over the front row

Kuina also trusted you enough to open up about her past, she knew she had your full support no matter what

Niragi:

let's be honest, the only thing that made him pay attention to you at first were your looks

he didn't care about your personality or intelligence whatsoever

but the longer he was observing you, the more strange he found you

Niragi was a man of violence, nobody dared to insult him or mess with him in fear of the consequences

you however were always nice, to everyone

he found it baffling with how much kindness you responded to your bullies

he would never admit it but he felt threatened by it, you were so much stronger than him, so much better and he didn't know how to handle it so he became one of your biggest bullies

using every chance to poke fun of you or straight up insult you, in front of everyone at the Beach

but no matter how much he tried, he couldn't break you and you remained oblivious to his ill intentions

it took him a long time to realise that you were the only person there that didn't judge him, that didn't fear him and that if he had the slightest chance to form a meaningful relationship for the first time in his life, it was with you

Seonghwa woke up as soon as Mars had licked his face.

"Urgh... Mars, don't do that," Seonghwa wipes his face with his hand and sits up. Mars barks next to him and Seonghwa rubs his eyes, watching Mars stand up against his nightstand, he pushes his phone towards him. Seonghwa picks it up, squinting to read the message on it. "Yangyang? What does he want?" Seonghwa yawns.

Night Bowl. Tonight. 10 p.m.

Seonghwa's brows furrowed, naturally, he knew the location, he'd been to your aunt's restaurant a number of times before, but what could he possibly want? Mars barks next to him, as if to answer him.

"Working as a double agent, are you?" Seonghwa asks. He looks at the time, it was still early in the morning. He had a few schedules to get to beforehand. "How is she?" He asks. Mars tilts his head to the side. "Oh, come on, you know who I mean." Mars seems to smile as he hops onto the bed, resting his head on Seonghwa's lap. Seonghwa moves to pet him, and Mars responds by lightly biting him, not enough to hurt, but enough to keep Seonghwa's hand in place.

"Yup, you definitely deserve that," Hongjoong chuckles from the other side of the room. "Mars, bite him harder." Mars barks and applies more pressure. "Looks like we know which side he's on."

"Mama's boy," Seonghwa glowers. Mars rolls off of the bed and leaves the room. "Do you think he's going to run away again?"

"Probably, just hope he doesn't find a way to snitch on you to (Y/N)," Hongjoong sits up in bed to face Seonghwa. "I'm happy for you, really," he says, "it's not easy to be in a relationship as an idol, let alone with one."

"We're not on shore yet," Seonghwa sighs. He couldn't help but notice the strange foreboding feeling surrounding him. Something is going to go wrong, he knows it will. Nothing ever seems to go right with you two. Your first date, even the second one, meeting his parents and meeting yours, your relationship being exposed, and now this.

"Hey, don't overthink things too much," Hongjoong speaks up. "I have a really good feeling that everything will work out fine."

"I hope so."

"I know so," Hongjoong confirms. "You're tenacious, (Y/N) is stubborn, you're perfect for each other. Whatever is coming your way, I know you'll both get through it," Hongjoong adds. Seonghwa could only glance at him.

Despite their words, Mars trots back with a shirt in his mouth, now spotted with saliva, but it was clear what it was nonetheless. It was a white blouse with an undone ribbon in front.

"Now, where did you get that?" Hongjoong asks. Mars barks, as if to answer.

"I threw it in the laundry, figured I could give it back to (Y/N) next time I saw her," Seonghwa clears his throat. Hongjoong could only laugh.

"Well, well, when was the last time (Y/N) stayed over?"

"Never, it got mixed up with my things when we went to..." Seonghwa's voice trailed off. "When we went to Rome."

"Rome, wow, I still can't believe that the company sponsored that."

"I mean, we did have to make content," Seonghwa shrugs.

"It's still a trip regardless," Hongjoong scoffs. Whatever he said next fell on deaf ears. Seonghwa only picked the blouse up and folded it nicely.

He'll make things right again, he knows he has to. One step at a time.

"What are you going to do in the meantime?" Hongjoong asks. "Plan your strategy? I know your parents already want you and (Y/N) back together, what about hers?"

"I'm meeting an old friend of mine, actually, he recently moved to Seoul so he's been wanting to go out," Seonghwa shrugs. "Besides, I know (Y/N)'s parents will be supportive regardless, or at least I hope so. We'd only met the one time they came over here to visit from the States, but even then, they were just glad that she found someone she really liked," he adds.

"(Y/N) and her parents aren't that close?"

"No, or at least, not as close as I am with my parents." Then, suddenly, his expression grows distant. "I think... I think my real problem would be with her brothers." At this, Hongjoong sits up. Mars' ears also perk up, as if this was the first he'd heard of them too.

"(Y/N) has brothers?!"

"Yeah, she doesn't talk about them much though, but when she does it sounds like they're close," Seonghwa leans against his bed frame. "Either way, it's not important right now. Her younger brother's in the States and her older one's... somewhere, I've never met them, actually. From what I hear from (Y/N) he's a bit of a homebody," Seonghwa frowns and stands up. "I'm going to go get ready now, don't wait up for me," he walks over to the closet and the conversation ends there.

"Yangyang!" Your voice was shrill in the WayV side of the dorms. Kun only stared at you when you walked in after he said the door was unlocked. "Where is he?"

"What did he do?" He spoke with a voice of a thousand tired men.

"I can't find Mars anywhere, have you seen him?" You crossed your arms.

"Mars? No, I can't say that I have, Yangyang's in his room though, if you want to ask him."

"Thanks, Kun, I'll be in and out!" You smiled and walked down the hall. You knocked on the door quickly and opened the door. "Yang, have you seen-" your words got caught in your throat. Yangyang was staring at you with wide eyes and you matched his expression. With a razor pressed to his leg and a can of shaving cream in his other hand, you both stood frozen for a few seconds longer. "Uh..."

"God dammit, woman, can't you knock?!" Yangyang shoves you out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

"I did knock!" You shout back. "Who the hell shaves in their room?!"

"I do!"

"It's disgusting."

"It's practical."

"Oh my god," you hit your head against his door. "Whatever, have you seen Mars?"

"Mars?"

"Yes, Mars."

"No? Why?"

"I can't find him anywhere!"

"I get this is like an emergency," the door opens and Yangyang, now wearing a pink hoodie and orange shorts, a horrid combination no doubt put together just now, leans against the frame. "But could you not have texted me about this?" He asks.

"I was going to text the chat, but my phone died and I can't find my charger- Ooh! Before I forget, can I borrow yours?" You smiled. Yangyang leaned to the side and handed you his. "Thanks! I'm going to check the Dreamies next. Just, let me know if you've seen him."

"Yeah, yeah, I will!" He closed the door and you were on your own again.

"Any luck?" Kun takes small sips of his coffee.

"Not enough," you shook your head. "Mind if I leave my phone here to charge for a bit?"

"Go ahead," he nods his head toward the outlet, not looking up from his phone. "I'll let you know if I see Mars wandering around here."

"Alright, thanks again," you plugged your phone in and stepped out, walking over to the Dream side of the dorms. One knock was all it took before the door swang open.

"Hi, (Y/N)," Jeno took heavy breaths and had a nervous smile on his face.

"Hey, Jen, just came back from the gym?" You asked, looking at the time.

"Yup!"

"That's early, even for you," you hummed.

"Yeah, yeah," Jeno nods his head. "I've been wanting to work on myself lately, you know? You should come with me next time! I'm always more productive at the gym when I go with someone!"

"What about Jaemin?"

"Too early for him! Come on, (Y/N), it'll be fun! So fun, in fact, that I'm going back right now to get more reps in, you should come with me!" He steps out of the door and closes it behind him.

"What are you hiding, Lee Jeno?"

"These massive guns," Jeno rolls his hoodie sleeves up and flexes, earning an eye roll from you.

"Have you seen Mars?"

"Mars? No, but I'm sure he'll turn up after we go to the gym!" Jeno nods.

"Huh?"

"I mean, Xiaojun hyung is over there right now, Mars and Bella usually play a lot, maybe he knows?" Jeno insists.

"That's true! Good thinking, Jen! Alright, I'll go get ready and we can head over there!"

"Yeah, yeah!" Jeno nods his head exaggeratedly just as the door opens behind him.

"Lee Jeno! What do you mean you lost Mars?!" Renjun shouts. At that moment, all the color in Jeno's face drained. You leaned over to the side.

"Mars is missing?" You ask.

"Well, Jisung's been crying about it all morning, so yeah," Renjun sighs.

"Uh... hold on a second, could I borrow one of your phones?" You ask. Renjun hands you his and you type in the first number you thought of.

"You know what, Yeosang? I'm sick of your shit," Wooyoung huffs. Yeosang rolls his eyes.

"Oh yeah? That makes two buddy."

"Wait, that doesn't make sense," Mingi shakes his head. "Yeosang are you also sick of your own shit or Wooyoung's shit?"

"Why would I be sick of my own shit, Mingi?" Yeosang scoffs.

"I was just saying! You're the one who said it wrong!"

"Okay, okay, break it up," Hongjoong steps in. "What are you two arguing about now?" He looks between Yeosang and Wooyoung, who are each holding pet food.

"Yeosang thinks that Mars likes beef but I know that Mars likes chicken more," Wooyoung explains. Yeosang groans.

"That's not true! Mars always has leftovers when you feed him that crap!"

"I just give him a lot so he doesn't starve!"

"Why don't we just scoop each into a bowl and see which one he eats first," Hongjoong sighs. He pauses when his phone starts ringing, seeing an unknown number. "Hello?" The other members of ATEEZ stood in tense silence.

"Hey, Hongjoong! I'm glad you answered! It's (Y/N), I'm using Renjun's phone."

"Oh! Hey, (Y/N), what's up?" Hongjoong immediately relaxes.

"I was going to call Seonghwa but I had a feeling that he wouldn't pick up after the whole fiasco, you know? But, anyway, hey is Mars there? No one's seen him over here."

"Yeah, Mars is here- Hey! Since I have you on the line, let me put you on speaker really quick," Hongjoong moves the phone from his ear and taps on the speaker button. "(Y/N), does Mars prefer chicken or beef?"

"Hm? Neither, Mars likes pork."

"What?!" Wooyoung and Yeosang's voices were overpowering. The group could hear your laughter through the speaker.

"Why didn't you ask Seonghwa? He knows that too, I'm sure."

"Hyung said that he had to step out for a bit!" Wooyoung walks up to Hongjoong and speaks into his phone. "I think he mentioned that he was meeting a friend."

"That's good! He needs a break from you guys every now and then," you chuckled, "well, I have to head out too! I promised Jeno I'd go to the gym with him, so I'll see you guys sometime soon!"

"Bye, (Y/N)!" The group shouted out before Hongjoong hung up. He put one hand on his hip and looked at Yeosang and Wooyoung.

"Well, we know what kind of food to get from now on," Hongjoong says. "Just finish up those two first and then we'll get the right one."

"I can't believe we never considered pork," Yunho frowns.

"He always ate the beef one," Yeosang grumbles. Mars' ears shift downward as if he felt guilty. The look in his eyes were enough to show that he wanted to head back to the NCT dorms, right away, preferably. Maybe if he was lucky, the one they call Johnny would throw him a pork chop. Mars whimpered, his brain filled with thoughts of food.

"Mars! You're drooling!" Yeosang grabbed a paper towel and wiped Mars' face. Mars spots the bag of dog food in Yeosang's hand and a cry slips out of him. If he didn't miss them so much, he'd have ran back to you in a heartbeat. The life of a dog is hard.

Seonghwa adjusted his mask carefully while he waited in front of the café. He stared at the message on his phone, he was slightly surprised that Kyungjae still had his number, considering that they exchanged it so many years ago. They were both in the same club in grade school, and Seonghwa being Seonghwa he did his best to help the younger members out with getting adjusted to club duties and activities. Kyungjae just so happened to be the one of his dongsaengs that he really got along with. They were close up until Seonghwa had graduated, and after that, their interactions were very sparse. They hadn't seen each other in person until that day about a month ago.

"Hyung! Hyung! Hey, I'm over here!" Kyungjae grins. Seonghwa's expression lights up and he waves at him.

"Kyungjae, how have you been?" Seonghwa asks.

"I've been good! Let's head inside," Kyungjae holds the door open for him and Seonghwa steps in. They spot a table near the back and set their things down first. "Hyung, I hear their strawberry tarts here are really good, should I get you one?"

"It's alright, I can-" Seonghwa's hand was on his wallet already but Kyungjae shook his head.

"No way, hyung! I've got this one, I got this great new job and you always spotted me in school, let me get this one!" Kyungjae was off before Seonghwa could argue. Seonghwa sighed instead, watching Kyungjae speak to the worker. He leans back against his chair, letting his mind wander.

You had only mentioned your brother's once to him, and it was after he introduced you to his older brother.

"He's nice! You told me he was scary," you nudged Seonghwa's arm just as his older brother walked off. Seonghwa had told you earlier about how intense his brother could be, a natural response to growing up together, of course, but you'd almost too confidently shook off the fear. You'd told him that he didn't have to worry and, lo and behold, you both hit it off almost too perfectly. "See, I told you that you didn't have to worry. I have brothers too, you know," you laughed.

"You never mentioned it," Seonghwa says. You'd been together for a while now, he was surprised that you'd kept it from him for so long.

"Yeah, well, we're not as close as we used to be, but we still check up on each other. My younger brother's a pro-gamer! That really set my mom off, oh my, that's a hard job, you know? He's in the U.S. right now training or something like that, so I doubt you'll meet him any time soon. Even I can't get him to take a break and come over here," you sighed.

"Gaming? Does he stream?"

"Every now and then, yeah," you nodded. "I haven't had time to check in on those, though, I'm being run to the ground," you sigh. "But, actually, my older brother lives here! Daegu, I think, but uh... he doesn't really go out much. Plus, he's always busy with his job too, he works in Foreign Affairs," you shrugged. "Mostly from home, but yeah. He practically raised me and my younger brother though, I owe him a lot! I'll try to get him out of the house to introduce you one day, promise!"

Needless to say, you never did convince that older brother of yours. But he took your word for it then that he didn't have anything against the relationship. Then, he felt a slight vibration against the table, he flipped his phone over and, well, nothing. He looked over to Kyungjae's instead, seeing an incoming call from a contact titled 'J'. Soon, the vibration stopped, and a simple missed call notification remained. But it wasn't that that caught his attention. It was something that got him to sit up straight. He cleared the notification and, sure enough, he'd recognize you from anywhere.

He knew this picture, it was straight out of the previews for Photograph.

Was he just a fan of NCT? He wouldn't be too surprised, your group had hiked in popularity over the past year, and he knew it was normal to have pictures of your favorite member as your home screen or lock screen, but he was sure that he was justified in feeling a little weird about it. He moved away just as he noticed Kyungjae on his way back with the pastries in hand.

"Sorry that took a while, hyung! They were taking way too long to get our orders out," Kyungjae placed the tart and coffee in front of him before taking his seat. "So, how are things with ATEEZ? Being an idol must be so time-consuming," Kyungjae sighs.

"It is, a little bit, but I find time for the people I love," Seonghwa says. "How about you? You're a stylist now, right?"

"Yeah! I got accepted into my dream company and now I'm working with my favorite group. You know, a lot of my classmates told me to stay away from my favorite group if I wanted to keep them as my faves, but if anything it just made my appreciation for them more," Kyungjae gushes.

"NCT, right?"

"Yeah, how'd you know?"

"I still talk to some people within that group, you know," Seonghwa slides his coffee closer to him. "They told me that there was a new stylist, so I figured it was you," he says. Not really, he just put it together now. All of the pieces had finally been put together, it must have been the man in front of him that you were trying to tell him about before.

But he could hardly believe it, he knew Kyungjae well at some point, and he didn't think that he'd ever do something so uncomfortable to another person, but times really do change people. He felt uncomfortable himself now. There was no doubt in his mind, Kyungjae had to know that he had been in a relationship before, and if he really was your stylist then he was certain that he had some idea that you were talking again. He looked down at his coffee, it was a ridiculous notion but he didn't feel comfortable drinking it anymore. Without another thought, he shot you a text.

'Call me.'

In no time at all, his phone rang.

"Sorry, that's the company," Seonghwa took it before Kyungjae could look at the screen. He holds his phone to his ear, making sure to keep the volume low enough so only he could hear it.

"Hey, is everything alright?" Your voice sounded tired, maybe a little strained. He wanted to ask you that, but he had to keep the charade on. "Sorry, I'm at the gym right now and my arms feel like jelly, but I'm taking a long break so I have time." There you go reading his mind, he didn't think you'd be able to that still.

"Really? Now?" Seonghwa speaks.

"Huh?"

"Just have Hongjoong do it."

"What? Seonghwa, did you mean to have me call you?"

"I really have to go in today, huh? I'll be there in half an hour," Seonghwa continues.

"Here? In the gym? I mean, if you want? I'm with Jeno right now though and I think he's trying to get me to dead lift but forget that! I think my arms are about to fall off!"

"Alright, thank you for letting me know. I'll call later."

"Okay then? Alrighty! Stay safe!" Seonghwa hung up and shook his head.

"Sorry, I'm going to have to head out early, could we raincheck this for later?" He plasters on his idol smile and Kyungjae nods.

"Yeah, that's no problem, hyung! Just let me know."

"Thanks, Kyungjae, I'll talk to you later," Seonghwa slips his jacket on and walks out of the café.

Elain's Little Black Dress is foreshadowing, not ridiculous; a theory

Please don't share or screenshot this post without credit.

Disclaimer: as usual, theories are theories, and just like all of my other theory posts, this one also makes no claims of accuracy.

I'm going to include the following passage from ACOSF in a much longer meta that I'm working on, but it deserves its own post, because it's such a divisive moment, and I haven't yet seen this argument against Cassian’s statement.

For reference, I'm basing this rebuttal against the opinion that Elain not wearing black well means she will be leaving her family for either the Day or Spring Courts on my Dusk Court theory post; it's a 10k word monster, so I'll briefly sum up the pertinent information:

Elain is warmth, spring and rebirth. She is hope and light.

Azriel is cold, winter and death. He is the knife in the dark.

The Dusk Court originally occupied the land that is currently known as Hybern; the Court itself is hibernating, due to the lack of a High Lord... for now.

I suspect Azriel is, unknowingly, descended from the High Family, and may be selected by the High Lord’s magic. This may or may not be shared with Elain as, together, they are Dusk personified.

The Court of Nightmares, in the Hewn City, descends from a group of Dusk Court refugees.

The fae in the Court of Nightmares - and the many other groups of faeries who are likewise trapped to varying degrees - are, essentially, faeries in a "mound," potentially based on the Tuatha De Danann. There are associations with the mounds of the Tuatha De and the Otherworld/the dead.

These faeries are waiting to be revived... for the Dusk Court to be reborn. To live again.

Aside from the fact that I'm not sure why we are taking fashion advice from General Lives in Leather (I'm sorry Cassian, I love you), I suspect that it's significant that SJM had Cass use the phrase "sucked the life from her" when Elain was at the Court of Nightmares, which is, I suspect, an offshoot of the fallen Dusk Court, currently acting as a subcourt of Night.

We know SJM is huge with her imagery, so pay close attention to her choice of words:

"... leeched the brightness from her face."

The Court of Nightmares, as I theorise it, could have detected Elain’s (potential) life-giving magic - her brightness - and is attempting to wake itself up by "leeching" it from her. Not unlike the way that Azriel's dagger, Truth-Teller, "devoured" the sunlight. I wouldn't be surprised if Elain weilded Truth-Teller again in the future, and was able to feed it more power, unlocking new abilities.

"But she hadn't hesitated to come."

Just like any other time Elain has seen the right thing to do, after the beginning of ACOTAR - even if it wasn't necessarily the easy option - such as hosting Feyre and the bat bros in the human lands, and begging Graysen and his father for sanctuary for others after she was Made, she has acted, even when she had everything to lose, regardless of the effects on her. I suspect that this will happen again in her book, likely in association with the Court of Nightmares.

"Elain had squared her shoulders and declared that she was a part of this court--and would do whatever was needed."

Notice that Cassian doesn't mention that Elain had declared she was a part of the "Night Court," rather, she declared that she was a part of "this court." Cassian also thinks this at the Hewn City which is - potentially, of course - actually a different Court entirely. Is this a hint that Elain is actually a part of the Court of Nightmares?

Again, Cassian notes that Elain will do what is required of her. Reminding people that she can and will act to do "whatever" was needed to protect her people.

"He’d never once in the two years he’d known her found Elain to be plain, but wearing black, no matter how much she claimed to be part of this court … It sucked the life from her."

Once more, Cassian mentions the vague "this court," rather than specifically naming the Night Court. Coincidence? Potentially. Or it could be intentional.

As for the colour black sucking the life from Elain, maybe the dress just had the wrong undertones for her complexion - maybe she was wearing the Void fabric, for whatever reason - but what if it was symbolic of the hibernating fragment of the hypothetical Dusk Court, that resides in the Hewn City, recognising what Elain will represent to them, and attempting to suck her life-giving magic from her without her knowing?

Please note that I don't think that this will harm or kill Elain, as I think her character's representation as a gardener - someone who grows and nurtures life - is a metaphor for her role in reviving, or rebirthing, if you will, the fallen Dusk Court.

This was just an incredibly short and quick post - by my usual standards, anyway - and it feels weird stopping here, but my point has been made. The above text includes an equally valid interpretation of this brief passage from Cassian’s POV that could explain why SJM felt it necessary to draw the reader's attention to Elain not looking her best in "black" (as opposed to Nesta's "Night Court black" while at the Court of Nightmares.

This may seem like a crack theory right now, and it could certainly remain that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if, once the sequel trilogy has been completed, this is a passage that sticks out as a moment of foreshadowing on a re-read.

hello! your zutara posting today has finally motivated me to ask this question because I came to atla very late(last year, to be specific) and I Love It Very Much but am 1000% out of the loop as far as why what remains of fandom (at least that I've seen among my friends) is so very strongly zutara. I'm not opposed to it per se I just don't really know what has driven it to apparently be such a popular ship? can you help me understand and maybe convert me a little bit?

This got so long, I’m so sorry. I don’t know how to put it under a cut on mobile and it already got deleted once so I’m scared to mess with it lol. Moving on.

I’m gonna start this with a disclaimer that im on mobile so formatting is tricky and I’m also really new to atla in that I only completed my first watch through in like 2019??? So some of my info is all just based on what I’ve picked up from Discourse 👀 so anyway the sparknotes version: zutara was wildly popular from the beginning. To the point where the atla crew internally disagreed on which ship should be endgame. (Ex. Bryke [showrunners] asked the writers to rewrite The Southern Raiders to make Zuko seem less ideal for Katara than Aang [which failed, depending on who you ask]; the animation team purposefully created a visual parrallel between Oma and Shu in the Cave of Two Lovers and Zuko and Katara in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se in the Crossroads of Destiny; etc.)

The ship was popular enough that Bryke actually chose to display zk fanart at a con for the sole purpose of mocking the fans, but that’s neither here nor there. The entire episode Ember Island Players, while a love letter to/parody of the whole show, was an opportunity to address zutara’s viability as a canon pairing (while, again, mocking zutaras for romanticizing that catacombs scene). Point is! It’s always been popular but with it not being endgame, there’s got to be something that’s given it staying power.

And that’s honestly got to do with three things: their dynamic, thematic cohesion, and potential.

(You know what... you know what, it’s four things. The fourth is they’re so aesthetically pleasing together and individually. Like, they’re just good looking people [specifically when they’re grown but they’re also cute kids] and that absolutely doesn’t hurt) (but it’s not the Point, it’s just nice to point out sometimes)

The dynamic is hard to get into without also looking at the canon pairings, but I think I can do that without unnecessary bashing. It’s just that part of the magic of zutara is really highlighted by what they give to each other that their other relationships don’t.

First off, it’s classic enemies to (would be) lovers. The absolute truest form of it. It’s not too different from how CS started out: a rogue antagonist with a job to do—but no personal vendetta against the future love interest—who is deeply and emotionally invested in his personal storyline (revenge/redemption) with little regard for how it effects other people after his entire life and genuine good nature are marred by suffering, and a fierce warrior girl with a strong moral compass and her own personal investment in stopping him (protect her family and save the world doing it). Obviously frustration and animosity grew between them by the nature of them being on opposing sides, but that just lends itself to the sweetness of their later reconciliation.

The thing is that while they’re wildly different on the surface (he’s a hot-headed prince of a fascist regime who is trying to capture the Avatar to please his father; she’s a nurturing daughter of the chief who is trying to protect and train the Avatar in order to topple his father’s throne) they find out that they have so much more in common both in their experiences and their personalities.

(What follows is an excessive use of the word “both” and I’m sorry about that)(I can edit it. I can do that. That IS an option............)

They both have an innate sense of justice that they are determined to see done (zuko, at the war meeting, sticking up for the Earth Kingdom kid when the guards torment his family, choosing not to steal from the pregnant couple despite his circumstances, abiding by his word to leave the SWT should Aang come willingly, etc.; katara, literally.... at any point). They both have pretty one-track minds at accomplishing certain goals once they’ve put their mind to it, regardless of a lack of support in that endeavor (it goes without saying I guess, but zuko’s entire hunt; katara’s determination to get the earth benders to fight back, her determination to absolutely destroy Pakku until he agrees to teach her, etc.). They both lost their mothers at young ages. Their worlds are war-torn and traumatizing to them both, if in different ways, but that ultimately forces them to grow up too quickly to be wholly independent individuals. They both have issues with their fathers (for WILDLY different reasons, but). They both hold extreme prejudices that they need to learn to overcome (which ties into thematic cohesion)(bit like Lizzie and Darcy in that way but magnified by a million). They’re both extremely emotional and empathetic—which can and often does result in loud outbursts. Katara’s a bit better adjusted and can temper her anger for longer than S1 Zuko can, but they both feel that anger deeply and have no compunctions expressing it (Katara is, usually, more justified, particularly in S1. Again, S1 Zuko is severely maladjusted but at the point when they could’ve feasibly become a couple, he’s so much better off with the way he carries himself). They both struggle with feelings of inferiority in their bending abilities when confronted with prodigal benders like Aang and Azula, but have the work ethic required to double down and become two of the most powerful benders in the three remaining nations. This is a little more minor but it is a parrallel that appeals to some shippers that they both have these alter egos in the Painted Lady (notably fire nation coded) and the Blue Spirit (water tribe coded) that are pretty different from who they are day-to-day and are useful in accomplishing a purpose that they as themselves cannot.

(I’m.... I just realized that this could potentially get very long. Should I have made a slide show with bullet points??????)

Anyway, similar. I know there’s more but there’s literally so much to love about zutara that I’ll drive myself a little crazy trying to compile all the ways they’re similar. (Just gonna say that at this exact moment I went back to add more similarities.... so okay then)

Once they’ve reconciled, we see how all of these things only lend themselves to a deeper intimacy together than they share with literally anyone else. There’s a steady partnership that positions them as the mom/dad of the gaang, while also providing the support necessary to allow the other to not have to carry so much responsibility. A lot of zutaras will point out how zuko is actually depicted doing the more domestic chores that are normally relegated to Katara once he joins the gaang, since the others in the group are two 12-year-olds and sokka. The one that sticks out the most is how he makes tea for the group and then serves them, while Katara is able to just relax with her friends around the fire. Fanon expands upon this a lot to Zuko helping with the laundry or the cooking or whatever else needs doing since he, as a once-refugee, is used to doing his own domestic tasks. Before Zuko joined, Katara was the one mothering everyone, sewing for them, cooking for them, etc. She’s always tending to the needs of the group, and that includes emotionally. She does the emotional labor for the gaang 99% of the time, but when she’s the one falling apart, she’s usually doing it alone and without the comfort that she normally provides for others. Until Zuko. And that’s before they’re even friends.

Which is WHY people romanticize the catacombs of Ba Sing Se so much. Katara is verbally attacking Zuko out of her own righteous anger but also her own prejudice when Zuko, surprisingly, chooses to be vulnerable with her. He’s been on a journey that’s opened his eyes a bit, but he’s never actively chosen to expose the rawest parts of his past to anyone. But for some reason he chooses to do that with Katara of all people. While she’s yelling at him. He sees her humanity, and for once can look past his prejudice and empathize with her. And this time, when she breaks down, she gets to be comforted. Katara normally talks about her mother when she’s trying to explain to someone else that she sees and understands they’re pain, as a form of comfort to them. Here, Zuko uses the exact same tactic. He sees her and he understands. And for zuko? He’s not being shut down. He’s allowed to articulate his pain regarding his mother without being ignored and made to internalize it, and he’s allowed to process how he feels about his scar out loud without being told that he deserved it. And then he lets her touch his scar, something we’ve seen him actively avoid before. He’s completely open to her and she’s completely open to him and all it took was one five minute conversation. She was about to use the little bit of Spirit water that she had, that she was saving for something Important, to heal the scar that still daily causes him pain just because they had, somehow, connected.

Plus there’s the whole parallel to the star-crossed lovers forbidden from one another, a war divides their people—

And then zuko messes up, he regresses, he gets what he wants and he HATES it. And the sense of justice he had as a child has been restored to him against his will and he can’t think of anything he wants to do more than the Right Thing, so he joins team avatar. Before he does that though, we get to see his relationship with Mai, which is where comparison really comes in. And what we see is Zuko, fresh off of his encounter with Katara in the catacombs, trying to be emotionally honest with Mai... and getting shut down and dismissed. Which is just how Mai is and it’s fine, but not for Zuko. Still, he keeps trying, and he keeps getting ignored or scoffed at or yelled at. Which is really a larger symbol for how he doesn’t fit in his old life anymore, but again that’s about thematic cohesion. He tries to articulate his anxieties about returning home, he tries to make romantic gestures, he tries to explain how morally conflicted he’s feeling—and Mai diverts to some kind of physical affection to shut him up and a parting comment that is pretty much always, in essence, “I don’t wanna talk about this.” So they don’t. On the other hand, once zuko and Katara are friends, we see him again emotionally distraught and caught up in his anxieties about facing Iroh, and it’s Katara who comes to him and listens to him and comforts and encourages him.

Similarly, we have Aang clamming up and getting uncomfortable whenever Katara shows any negative emotion, usually resulting in him making excuses or running away. Or, in the case of the Southern Raiders, lecturing her on how she needs to just let go of her anger about her mother’s murder. People have talked this episode to death and usually better than I ever could, so imma... keep it brief. There’s a serious disconnect between Aang and Katara in his ability to empathize with Katara and her needs that has her tamping down her vulnerability and amping up her anger. He tells her that he was able to forgive his people’s genocide and appa’s kidnapping (petnapping? Theft??), which is blatantly not true but also not an entirely equal parrallel to Katara’s situation, and continues making these little remarks throughout the episode. But it’s Zuko that Katara opens up to. It’s with him that she’s able to talk about the most traumatic day of her life, and it’s with him that she’s able to get the closure she needs, cementing their bond as friends and partners. This disagreement between Aang and Katara is then... never resolved. They just never bring it up and hear what the other is saying.

There’s a fic called The Portraits of Ember Island that has a line that so completely sums up the heart of the matter for why people love their dynamic. For context, zuko has woken up early to help Katara with the cooking and they spend the whole time just letting one another talk, and zuko stops to ask why she always just lets him talk. And so she stops to ask why he’s always helping, and it goes as follows:

There’s just... so much mutual support! Trust! Intimacy!! And it just continues like that from the Southern Raiders on, listening to each other, advising each other, watching each other’s backs! And then! Literally saving each other’s lives!! I will never be over the last Agni kai. Not ever. Zuko may have been willing to jump in front of lightning for anyone, but he actually did it for Katara. And in a show, that’s the thing that really matters. It’s a fulfilled trope usually exclusively applied to romantic pairings, and it ended up applying to Zuko and Katara. And then she ran out into the middle of a fight with tunnel vision just to get to him.

Also!! Also Zuko pushing Katara out of the way of the falling rocks at the Western Air Temple!! And Katara catching him as he fell from the war balloon that he fought Azula on!! Before they’re even getting along, they’re the ones reaching for each other. They come to this place of equal ground, as partners, who watch each other’s backs, call each other out but still listen attentively and understand, and provide the support that the other has been sorely lacking up until they knew each other (whether that be from lack of effort or lack of understanding from others, or an unwillingness to accept it for themselves).

Then, trailing along under the surface of this, we see the themes of the show totally embodied by Zuko and Katara as individuals and in their relationship to one another. There’s a YouTuber, sneezyreviews, who has a, like, 2-hour explanation on why she not only loves zutara but also believes that their endgame would’ve actually elevated the writing of atla to new levels particularly because of thematic cohesion and resolved character arcs. It’s the zutara dissertation I never knew I needed, and it’s funny and eloquent and effective, so I’m just going to sum up her section on thematic cohesion to the best of my abilities and then link it for whenever you have the time. And I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you want a full understanding of what makes zutara so great and gives it such longevity.

Guru pathik has a line that goes something like this: separation is an illusion; things that seem different are just two parts of the same whole. Iroh also tells Zuko something similar: balance and strength are achieved when the different nations come together and influence one another and celebrate what makes them each unique. And this lesson is a massive central arc that both Zuko and Katara go through, moving past a black-and-white, good guys-vs-bad guys, us-vs-them mentality and into a greyer, more nuanced view of the world. Zuko sees the fire nation from an entirely new perspective and while he still loves and hopes for his nations future, he surrenders his blind loyalty to them in exchange for an unflinching loyalty to peace and love. Katara too had to come to terms with the fact that cruel people exist in the earth kingdom and water tribes, while some fire nation citizens are just regular, kind people who also need and deserve to have someone speak on their behalf. And this is honed in directly on how they view each other. They grow in their individual journeys to be open to the humanity in the other and then, once they’ve found that, they’re able to grow more in compassion for others in a beautiful feedback loop. And this is all matched in the symbolism repeatedly and intentionally associated with them in canon: sun and moon, fire and water, yin and yang, Oma and Shu who found love despite their warring nations. Their individual arcs are completed in each other and complement the themes of atla beautifully.

The canon pairs... just don’t. Which, again, is fine. But the very things that give atla longevity and popularity are anchored in zutara. Kat@ang doesn’t accomplish this. They’re... nice. Sweet. Especially when you erase a good portion of their interactions in S3. It could’ve been just a sweet love story. (Personally, the dynamic between toph and aang accomplish the same thing that zutara does, with complementary personalities that fulfill the theme of opposites blending in harmony) M@iko, on the other hand, is less sweet but I think wasn’t even supposed to last. Zuko’s relationship with Mai seems to represent his relationship with his old life as a whole. He can’t be emotionally vulnerable, he’s goaded into abusing his privileges, his agency and opinions aren’t respected. They just don’t have common ground with which to discuss anything that matters, so they don’t. As far as themes, the relationship doesn’t fit with atla. It’s zuko returning to and sticking with what is (on the surface) like him, what’s expected. Fire nation with fire nation. Fluid water bender with the flexible air bender. Like with like, separated from what is different and challenging and complementary.

And all of these things combined of course lead to the potential for the ship. I don’t know how familiar you are with the post-atla canon but... well, miss “I will never turn my back on people who need me”, miss “I don’t want to heal! I want to fight!” ends up living quietly in the SWT as a designated healer who turns a blind eye to the water tribe civil war happening right outside her front door. Which can be fine! People change! Some people just wanna stay inside. I just wanna stay inside! But the potential future for zutara is so much more satisfying, with Katara becoming the most unconventional Fire Lady the uppity old cads who are stuck on the old ways have ever seen. Fanon has her serving as a voice for the other nations within a kingdom at the point of its biggest political upheaval, as a confidante to Zuko who can actually help him while he’s trying to figure out how to move forward and make reparations. They have the opportunity, together, to accomplish what they both have set on their hearts to fight for: positive change that lends itself to harmony and balance. And the steambabies! A popular headcanon is that their firstborn daughter, the crown princess, is actually a waterbender, which causes such an uproar among the people who are adamantly clinging to the old ways. It’s just a future full of potential to be forces for good together, full of trust, intimacy, joy. The exact era of peace and love and balance that zuko announces that he intends to ring in with the start of his reign as Fire Lord is, again, magnified by the very personal zutara relationship. And we love to see it.

tl;dr zutara isn’t for everyone. Some people just don’t vibe with it. Some are nostalgic. Some love the canon they grew up with. Some have been disappointed for years. Some just see themselves in other characters and want their happiness instead. Whatever the reason, that’s fine. But for me, I love the way these two, from the moment they give each other a fair chance, are able to lower their walls and prejudices to see the other for the kindred spirits they are. They see each other’s humanity, and their response is to pour out love and support and compassion. I love that they’re a power couple in battle. I love the symbolism and, honestly, soulmatism that colors their every interaction. I love that they embody the whole storyline of atla in their relationship and how it develops, which is notably why their seasonal arcs always culminate in each finale with how they relate to one another. I love that zuko adopting a waterbending move is what actually saves his life and then katara’s. I love the chemistry! And I love the future they could’ve had, instead of the ones they were given.

So, in conclusion: I just think they’re neat and I hope you do too, at least a little bit. Even if it’s just respectfully from a disinterested distance cause you do you. And now here is the video I mentioned. I’m sorry this post got so long and then I gave you an even longer homework assignment, but I can’t recommend it enough. She says it all better than I can.

I was thinking about your disclaimer on how views of knj/oc on virginity are reflective of the 'time/universe' that they live in. it got me thinking that men literally have no excuse lmao. like knj is obviously really fucking old but still managed to treat oc as a person rather than an 'other' especially while she was on her period. He wasn't grossed out, and I can bet he wouldn't really treat her differently even if she was 'touched' already. 1/2

So!! First of all, I love that this story is making you think and reflect!! that means so much to me, and it means so much as well that you're comfortable coming and talking to me!

You're right, it shouldn't be hard to for the men of this period (and, indeed, now) to act kindly. It shouldn't be hard at all for anyone in any time period to act kindly tbh. I think that's part of what is supposed to set Namjoon apart in some ways, but I also think it bears mentioning that there's an extent to which he's rather modern in a lot of ways as well. There's a lot of modern sexuality still being thrown around because, frankly, I'm a writer in this modern/post-modern world. I've been thinking about this a lot actually, after @thatlongspringnight sent me a really really interesting TikTok about the christian apostle Paul and his thoughts on human sexuality.

At the end of the day, there's no excuse for so many of the ways women and non-binary folks (and tbh just people in general) are treated. And that's regardless of time period. You're right, no one really has an excuse. The men that took her out into the woods definitely don't have an excuse, and I've wondered frequently what the incident would have looked like if there was a man who'd stood up to the crowd, or a woman that commanded more respect while also being more able-bodied than, say, Mahna. There's a not insignificant tradition of Eastern Orthodox Saints standing up for people that crowds are trying to ostracize in some way, for example, and I wonder how the story would have went if someone like that had been present to defend her. Warranted, this story would probably look very different if it had happened far enough east to be Orthodox rather than Catholic, but that's a whole fucking essay right there and I feel like I've rambled too much lkjfhdlakjfhalskjdfh

This might be a weird q, but I was rewatching that detective bucktaylor episode, and I actually got a stydia vibe from it! Do you think that stydia and bucktaylor might both have a similar dynamic?

Oh my God, anon, that's so funny that you say this because from the very beginning I have been comparing Taylor with Lydia. I even said so on the podcast "Dispatching the 118" where I was a guest one episode.

Disclaimer: I never liked Lydia Martin, and I never liked Taylor Kelly. Good for whoever does, but I don't. Just my opinion/feelings on it. (So maybe don't read ahead if you DO love them?)

So yeah, I definitely do see the similarities. The women being bitchy and mean at first. But because they're pretty they get a pass and the guys lust after them purely on looks. Then the writers decide that the women need to be more likeable so they seem to forget the nasty stuff they have done. (Although admittedly, from what I remember - I have the memory of a goldfish - Lydia had a bit more "redemption" so to speak) They never have to atone for their nastiness, and the guys fall for them purely because they're pretty and maybe smart, but they're not actually nice or good people at the time the guys fall for them. Which bugs the hell out of me.

Apart from the "falling for the bitchy, pretty redhead" I don't see a lot of comparison between Buck and Stiles though. But in the relationships... yeah. I can only hope that there is no way BuckTaylor will be endgame. *crosses fingers* Even regardless of Buddie (though OBVIOUSLY - you all know me - I want Buddie to be endgame) I don't want Buck to stay in his relationship with Taylor. I know that I'm biased and that I see very few flaws with Buck, but I just think that he deserves better. Say Taylor is a better person now than she was in the beginning (not that we really saw her evolve or saw her apologize for any of it or anything...) then I still don't think they're a good match. I think they want very different things in life, that their priorities are very different. I don't think Taylor actually knows who Buck really is, deepdown. And I think Buck sees Taylor as the way he wants to see her and not as she truly is. He wishes for that warm, loving, domestic relationship so badly that he's projecting all those wishes on Taylor, whether she is actually fits that picture or not.

Also, just in general, I really really despize the whole trope of "Insecure boy runs after popular girl and eventually 'wears her down'". I don't find it romantic in the least. (And I know we got the whole Buck not chasing after Taylor in the end bit, which made me somewhat happy, but then I absolutely hated that that was the thing that made her change her mind. It's like she only wanted him when she thought she couldn't have him anymore, and wanted to prove to herself that she could still have him after all. That's manipulative and just... ugh)

So yeah, as you can see, I really really don't like BuckTaylor and I didn't like Stydia either. And they do remind me or each other. And I admit that it's possible that I am biased through my own experiences and through other ships I want(ed) them to be in and a ton of other stuff maybe, but those are just my feelings and opinions.

(By which I want to say, don't come at me with hate for this. You're absolutely entitled to love BuckTaylor or Stydia and have your reasons for it, just like I'm entitled not to love them. And by 'you', I mean people reading this in general and not just you specifically, anon)

JIKOOK MMA 2020- COMMENTARY

Disclaimer: This is a commentary, not an expert analysis. I am not a ballerina. LTRS.

Let's all agree right here, right now, that if ever a moment deserve to be immortalized for all eternity, that it is this moment right here: the moment Jungkook lifts Jimin off the ground- it is the most super iconic IT moment of the year as far as shipping goes. Damn, was it beautiful. Goddamn!

Personally, I had so many flashbacks of unchartered fantasies, hopes and dreams- the least delusional of which is JK saying with a deep voice, after lifting JM off the ground, 'would you marry me please' and Jimin, shook out of his wits would respond in Satoori, 'we are already married, you idiot. Now put me down!' Lol.

What? A girl can dream... Leave me alone. Lol

A lot has been said of this dance and so I won't rumble on for long. I'm just gonna focus on the moments that stood out for me:

The first of which would be the build up to that performance- BigHit, you sneaky conglomerate bastard! Lol.

Y'all saw what they did there right? For weeks I have been bombarded with questions about the seemingly 'tensions' between Jikook- everyone was slipping me the 'something is up with Jikook' pill but chilee, I look at them and all I could see was Jikook up in their shenanigans. Lol

I think I mentioned this in a previous post? Anywho. I think the thing that most of us was experiencing with Jikook was the unnecessary 'limited' interactions between them in the recent content we had been getting post Jimin's birthday but regardless, there were still moments of them 'giving themselves away' like in the Grammy reaction video when Jimin instinctively turned to JK in his moment of excitement.

His hesitation was worrying though, because normally he wouldn't- they wouldn't, hesitate to hug the person that they want to hug in their moments of emotional outbursts unless something was hindering them.

Ergo, I felt, if he was hesitating, then clearly it meant there was something holding him back or stressing their dynamic- I think I've definitely talked about this right? Instinctual reactions and all that jazz?

It didn't feel like he was having problems with Kook though, honestly. Because, in spite of all these little inconsistent moments of 'tensions' between them, Jimin for the most part has been giving me the vibe he is falling in love all over again with Kook- Dont ask me why. Lol. This is just gonna be one of those statements I make in passing. Take note of it though, I'll talk about it again soon.

But from the little I've seen post Jimin's birthday, that's the vibe I'm getting. If you believe Jimin is in love with Kook and you have an idea of when he started falling in love with Kook in their love Journey, then I think you'd catch the signs too? If not, never mind. Lol.

Every now and then, I see him go through this phase- in my opinion. I can't wait to talk about it. And yes, it is what I meant when I said Jikook's dynamics seem to have flipped again lately. Time to turn on the crazy. Lol.

These minimum interactions between Jikook however, to me, felt more as if they were being 'monitored' or asked to 'tone things down' by the company or something rather than that they were having actual issues in their relationship- know what I mean?

For the love of me, I couldn't figure out why the company would ask them to tone things down... Until the blackswan performance.

I feel somehow that the lack of content and moments between Jikook in recent times, coupled with the seemingly faux tensions between them prior to their performance at the MMAs, without question, contributed to the wow factor of their performance. In my opinion- but stay with me.

BigHit ain't slick. Lol.

It's so on brand for them though, isn't it? Demand and supply and all that jazz. Chilee. Scarcity inflates the value of a product. I mean we've seen JK lift and carry Jimin in their dance performances several times now yet we can't deny this came as a shock and surprise for us all because we had zero idea what was 'going on between Jikook' behind the cameras- straight up Jedi mind trick. Lol.

Not to say the performance itself wasn't spectacular in of its own. I'd be mad damn liar and a fool if I peddled that nonsense anywhere. Lol.

I just want to point out how BigHit utilizes and taps Jikook's brand and magic in their business model, as this provides a stark contrast against BTS's marketing strategy for their self produced Album Be.

I tried explaining in my LGO analysis, how that project was a personal project of BTS' as a group and how as a group they had their own perception of brand and what sells- or who sells amongst them, as such they weren't going to and didn't star Jikook in that project as front and center.

Contrasting that project to this project, which is more of a BigHit piloted project rather than a personal project of the group's, you can see how Jikook's brand stands out and how it is being highlighted or even exploited for maximum return.

This is what I mean when I say Jikook is a brand. A powerful brand at that and that BigHit has a stake in their brand.

Jikook once again, overshadowed and dare I say, over powered BTS's own brand in that Blackswan performance- chileee, that performance was so Jikookcentric I forgot the others were even there. Lol.

I mean I saw NamJin jump in the foreground somewhere... I'm gonna get canceled am I not? Lmho.

VHope were powerful too. But I couldn't help but notice how neither of those individuals could have sold it the way JK did, had they been in his shoes. V and Hobi both have stamina and presence, yet for some reason I just can't picture either of them lifting Jimin up and spinning him the way JK did and does- not that they can't...

It's just, they take the spotlight too. Jimin is captivating when he dances- or does anything quiet frankly. And usually, he shines under the spotlight when there is undivided attention on him.

When he is paired with Hobi, V or even Suga, very often they act as distractions as they tend to compete with him for the viewer's attention and as such they don't necessarily compliment him. In my opinion.

Often too, when he is paired with RM or Jin, he tends to outshine them and make them look like rookies- Namjin... bless their hearts. Lol.

Kookie is the only member in the group that I feel compliments Jimin- well. Not that he isn't a great dancer too like Hobi or V, it's just whenever he is paired with Jimin in a performance he has the tendency to waive his spotlight and cede it to Jimin by letting go off his own shine and spotlight as well as his competitive spirit so Jimin can be highlighted.

It's why he is the perfect partner for Jimin and the perfect choice for this role in their duet. I think. He pulled it off guys. He PULLED IT OFF-chef's kiss JK. Chef's fucking kiss! Lol.

JK often talks about how he prefers to 'be behind the cameras,' how he often films the members but doesn't like being filmed or being in the spotlight and you see this in his GCFs where he takes the back bench and allows Jimin or even the others to dally in front of the camera.

I don't know if he is aware he does this in his dance too- because for the longest time critics often commented on his stage presence or lack of it there off- their words not mine...

Frankly, I never saw it that way. Because, paired with any other member, he squares up. Chilee. Lmho.

It's one thing to look great next to your partner, it's another to look great together next to eachother and Jikook looked great together in that moment- just exquisite and outstandingly beautiful.

The point of the black swan dance as RM had said in their blackswan Film reaction video, is not to highlight all seven but one- Jimin and that is exactly what JK did on that stage.

Jimin I felt wasn't as intense as he often is in his solo performances. He is brutal in the way he captures attention when he performs alone on a stage. His aura is demanding and alluring and if you can tear your eyes away from him when he is in the height of his performances then- share your magic formula you lucky bastard. Free us all from Jimin's hold. HELP! Lol.

But for some reason, in this performance, he wasn't lost in himself in the moment. It took me a while to understand what was happening-he was equally relinquishing his shine so Kook could share the spotlight with him- please, leave me here to die.

They each compete against the members when they perform with them on a stage, but they never seem to compete against eachother. They move in awareness of eachother and lift eachother up. They enhance eachother's presence and when they collide it's harmonious. This is what we mean when we say Jikook compliment eachother- nobody is doing it like them.

They were both powerful in their strides, graceful in their descent. They did it. They killed it.
