dragon for zinnia and grass for adaman! :)
Does your f/o have a kryptonite? Does your s/i know about it? What about vice versa?
Physical or character kryptonite? Physically, Fairy-types are a lot more common than Ice-types, so that's gonna be her main kryptonite (though Ice-type does have a 4x weakness against a good half of her team).
Character kryptonite, she...has a tendency to not think very far ahead or about the consequences of her actions, at least at first. Or she knows about the consequences, but only considers them in a nebulous sort of 'ends justify the means' sort of way. She doesn't really anymore, but it was one of her major drawbacks that she needed to work on.
Yes, Rachel does know about it and boy did she chew Zinnia out for that when she found out her involvement with Team Aqua and Team Magma in order to awaken Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. Thankfully, after actually seeing the impact it had on Hoenn, Zinnia realized that the ends she was trying to achieve weren’t worth gambling with people’s lives.
As for Rachel, her kryptonite is that she is relentlessly kind and is always trying to help people, which is an admirable trait most of the time, but she often takes it to a destructive degree where she’s willing to risk life and limb (quite literally, sometimes) if it means helping someone. She cannot stop herself from taking responsibility for so many things that she should not be solely responsible for and it weighs heavily on her.
Everyone who knows her knows that this is a problem for her and they have to physically force her to not get involved with whatever ‘end of the world’ shit is happening just so she can take a damn break. If they have to physically strap her to a chair to get her to take a vacation, they will.
You’re going on a picnic with your f/o! What are you packing for the trip and what does the scenery look like?
I don't have a lot of writing juice for the picnic prompt for Safeship September today, so this is gonna be my entry for it.
If it's something Rachel's actively planning to do with him, she'll either make something herself to take with her or ask Beni to surprise her with something special for him (he's a great cook, after all).
Probably something a lot more hearty and filling than what she would make on the fly, like some sort of mochi or rice dish with vegetables and such. She's not a master cook, but she knows what works in a pinch being out in the field and all and she can always ask Beni for pointers.
She'll grab one of the tarps and clothes from her lodge and grab a basket to carry everything and she'll bring along her Pokémon so that they can mingle while they eat. It does her a lot of good to see them play and get some enrichment while she's just relaxing.
In terms of where, she'll pick one of three places: the Obsidian Fieldlands (the scenery is nice, it's temperate, and it's relatively calm and peaceful), the Crimson Mirelands (as much as she dislikes how muggy and humid it is there, it is his home and she does really enjoy the scenery there and it would be most comfortable for him), or the Cobalt Coastlands (they both love the sea, it's warm and it's beautiful, and the Spheals by the shore are friendly enough company).
Aside from that, they just enjoy setting aside time for each other outside of their respective duties to just hang out and enjoy each other's time as equals and companions, letting their Pokémon bond with each other and relax to get away from the stresses of their individual duties.

"Hello. I am Nightfire. I am currently attempting to get my Camera to work."
Hello, I am Voidbear, @void-the-bear! Welcome to the blog of my MewTwo OC, Nightfire, and maybe more along the way!
This blog is in the far future where MewTwo have become a bit more commonplace. They are technically genderless, but they will choose their own preferred pronouns.
This blog is inspired by @xxtc-96xx's Mewtwo series, and will follow a SIMILAR flower headcanon to TC's universe. I stress the word similar. More info under the keep reading of the post. Also inspired by @mewtwoandme :)
I am not the best artist, so most of this blog will be answered with colored text. I will draw important parts, however. When I have time/get around to it. I unprofessionally don't have a huge story planned, but I do have a few characters I will introduce as time goes on.
Currently the only character is Nightfire, who speaks in Orange text. Mod comments(or when I forget to color text :b) will be in default text color
OC(s) information will also be under the keep reading.
I may introduce some Fakemon in the future.
OC Information:
- Nightfire(he/him) is a Mewtwo who is Psychic/Dark type. He does not remember anything about his biological parent, only that he grew up a majority of his life in a cave in Galar, therefore he may have a light British accent. He dislikes being compared to a Shadow Mewtwo despite the resemblance.
Around his teen years he found a Flapple and Appletun that took him in, but he has outlived them. He will often refer to the two, Cookie the Flapple and Milk the Appletun, as his parents. The two taught him how to forage and bake.
He has a special move called "Reverse Room", which works like the other room moves like trick room and wonder room, and it reverses type matchups(AKA turns it into an inverse battle for 5 turns). For example, Nightfire is 4x weak to Bug, 2x weak to Fairy, and immune to Psychic. Under Reverse Room, he 4x resists Bug and 2x resists Fairy. Under reverse room, type immunities nullify, so taking away his psychic immunity, he'd be 2x weak to Psychic due to Psychic's normally resistance to itself.
Here are some refs using various bases
(Using a random coloring page I found)
(@pokemon-ash-aus base)
(I did have one using the Mewtwo and Me base but apparently the color messed up somehow. I need to save the picture limit for when I add more characters anyways, though I may make a separate post for OC info in the future)
- TO BE ADDED LATER
Flower Rules:
As I mentioned before, the flower headcanon is SIMILAR to TC's flower headcanon, so regardless of gender identity, as long as the Mewtwo is healthy enough and wants a child, they can get impregnated by it.
Here's what's different here. Mewtwos can have secondary types. Pure Psychic mewtwos will USUALLY still have pure psychic babies, though they can have babies with a secondary typing. Mewtwos that do have a secondary typing will almost always have a baby with a secondary type, unless the situation lines up perfectly.
The secondary type of the baby depends on the environment the flower(s) are found in. However, it's not fully predictable. You could find a flower in the snow, but it can either be the expected ice typing, or it could be fire typing to be a source of warmth, or maybe even flying-type depending on the altitude. A flower found on the beach could be the expected water-typing, or it could be ground-type because of the sand, or maybe even poison-type if pollution is present. There's no solid way or predicting until the baby starts developing.
Again, pure-psychic mewtwos usually will have pure-psychic babies regardless of location of the flower, unless they're in a more extreme circumstance in which the weather will affect the child. And Mewtwos with secondary-types can have a pure-psychic child, though it is rarer than a pure-psychic mewtwo having a child with a secondary-typing.

My fellow plus-sized people!
A short time ago I made a post with some suggestions of shops that offer plus-size options and some cute varieties. (Link to the post - with the additions from people who reblogged - here)
Now, I have some more suggestions. To avoid making the previous post too long and clogging up people's dashes, I'm posting them here:
1.cantiq Los Angeles - This is a genderneutral/gender-inclusive lingerie shop that a friend showed to me. They are an "Exclusively Plus Size Lingerie Store from 1X to 5X, Queen 1X2X, Diva 3X4X, O/S Queen 1X3X since 2013" - this is copied directly from the 'About Us' section on their site. They have a variety of models with different body types and genders, and the lingerie itself is very sexy. I particularly like the look of the Amor Bralette and the Amor High Waisted Briefs.
2.Juicy Body Goddess - if you are a plus-size shopper on tiktok you may have heard the catchy phrase "welcome to Juicy Body Goddess, where you gotta be two-somethin' to do somethin'." Tiktok is where I was introduced to this independently owned business, and I very much love the style and variety present in the shop. This is a store specifically made for plus size shoppers, with sizes starting at 1x and going to 6x. The style of clothes ranges from everyday casual wear to a fancy night out at an upscale restaurant. The colours are phenomenal and vibrant, and this store also has lingerie pieces. My favourite pieces on their site are the dresses; there is so much variety and they all look so gorgeous.
3.thredUP - This is an online thrift-store. They sell a variety of brands and styles, with sizes ranging from 5X to XXS. The clothing is all listed online for people to view, and you can weed out the sizes you don't want with their search filters. Prices are affordable and the site gives you access to research and published articles detailing the positive impact thrifting has on the environment in their "about" section. Keep in mind this is a thrift shop, so availability and what is in-stock will change.
4.Dapper Boi - A gender neutral apparel line, started by members of the lgbtq+ community. This store was founded by a couple, Vicky and Charisse, after Vicky grew tired of being unable to shop and find clothes from the men's section that would fit her body shape. The store offers sizes XXS to 4X, with a few 5X items listed as well. They also feature a blog under the 'content' section with various articles/posts about fashion, the lgbtq+ community, and recommendations of other lgbtq+ businesses to support.
Again, please feel free to add suggestions! Please refrain from using this post as grounds to argue about which stores you like and dislike.
People who are not plus-sized; please feel encouraged to reblog for your friends and followers who may be plus-sized! It shows us you support us, and it helps us to find recommendations like this.

5, 12 and 18 :)
ty for the ask! 😘
5) What do you dislike most about making graphics / gifs?
photoshop is SOOO slow sometimes if photoshop was rly fast my gifmaking process would be at least 4x more enjoyable
12) Font(s) you like using
oh I am a big fan of fonts generally!! ok my current favorite is beautiful roses. Basic sans serif fonts I love include quicksand, moon, cocogoose, jakoppi. Some serif fonts I love: hellowin, sitka, calisto mt, novelle vague & pistilli. Some other, fancy/script fonts I love: atlane, billy ohio, bristle brush, coyote, hensa, hey october & mermaid swash caps
18) What is your go to adjustment / PSD for colouring?
I color everything from scratch so I don’t really have one.. but my rough process for coloring (if im going for a softer coloring and not a super vibrant/high contrast one) is: white color picker curve -> selective color blacks 100% -> reverse gradient map layer (soft light) -> color balance -> vibrance +100 -> selective color blacks 10% -> selective color for other colors -> another black (and maybe also white) selective color layer -> very small curves layer on top.

SWTOR player asks, all of them!
All of them?!? Crazy, crazy I say. But hell yeah, I’ll do it! Prepare yourselves, because that’s gonna be a long post.
1-6, 16 and 26 are already answered, so we go to the rest.
7. Which player voice actor is your favorite and your least favorite?
Why? I’m a sucker for voices in games, I can’t choose one. Female Inquisitor is great. Female smuggler is great. Female and male bounty hunter and sith warrior are great. Female agent is great. The rest are good, too. There is only one voice acting I don’t like that much - male consular. Idk, he doesn’t sound right to me.
8. Name your top favorite companions (feel free to include reasons why).
Have I said I can’t choose one alrea… wait, top? I’ll try.
1) all of BH crew (not u Skadge)
2) all of Smuggler crew
3) Kira
4) Scourge
5) Vector
6) Vette
7) Elara
8) Andronikos
9) Khem Val
10) M1-4X
9. How about your least favorite companions?
Skadge, lol (it’s even in my description). Also, Broonmark (I don’t find him interesting), Xalek and Tharan Cedrax (though they are better than the rest in this list).
10. Favorite love interest?
Apparently, someone who has so many toons haven’t gone through even the half of all romances in this game. Of all I’ve tried already, Lana, Theron, Torian and Vette are my faves. Arcann is sweet too, but we get, like, only two cutscenes, so I’m disappointed. DS!Jaesa doesn’t speak to me (it was.. something to explore, but it doesn’t hit my soul). Corso and Andronikos aren’t fully romanced yet, but so far so nice. Also I get the feeling that I’m gonna love Kira, Doc, Akaavi and Vector romances.
11. Which expansions did you like the most, and which ones did you dislike?
KotFE is definitely my favorite expansion. The way the cutscenes are made, great new (and not so new) characters, returning companions, confrontation with Valkorion in your mind, discussions about fate and the Force, family drama in space, chapter 14 (yes, the whole chapter is a separate reason), MUSIC (I’m a big fan of Star Wars music) - I love it! As for the expansion i dislike, I don’t think I have one. I may dislike the specific part of expansion (looking at you, 4 flashpoints that you need to complete to get to SoR (I know there is a way ti skip them, but I didn’t know this for a long time)), but not the whole expansion.
12. Do you have a preferred mount/speeder? Is there one you want, but don’t own yet?
I have only one speeder that is accessible for all my toons. Dunno, never felt a need for a special mount yet.
13. Which planet’s aesthetic/atmosphere do you enjoy the most?
Again, more than just one. Dromund Kaas, Alderaan, Voss, Corellia and Makeb are atmospheric as hell.
14. Favorite planet story arc?
Taris on Rep Side, Dromund Kaas, Balmorra, Belsavis on Imp side and Corellia on both.
15. Show us your main(s)!
Oh, but you already know them!
Jett (doesn’t have much of content yet, despite being my personal fave)
Airistan (DS!Jedi Knight)
Vintu (aka Pain in Barass)
So basically, my Outlanders are my mains.
17. If you participate in warzones, which is your favorite map?
Haven’t tried warzones and not sure if I will.
18. Which achievement(s) are you most proud of?
Finishing all class stories! I was so glad to finally get this one! (but honestly, I don’t remember most of achievements)
19. Where can other players most commonly find you in game?
Mostly I’m running story quests, heroics, sometimes hang out on the fleet (you got it right, in GTN sector), so this is where you could spot me.
20. What do you most often do while playing? (ex. PVP, FPs, quests, crafting, RP, etc.)
As I said, story quests and heroics. Sometimes I try something new, like flashpoints I never played before, maybe events.
21. Which player ship is your favorite?
The smuggler’s one. Maybe because it kinda reminds me of the Ebon Hawk.
22. Of all the in-game events (Relics of the Gree, Rakghoul, Life Day, so on) which do you like the most, and which do you dislike?
So far I did only Life Day, Bounty Contract Week, Rakghoul event on Alderaan, so can’t say for sure. For now it’s Life Day, coz hugging Wookiees? Gimme more!
23. Share some of your favorite quotes/dialogue with us!
I don’t want to take too much place in your dash, so here
And that’s only some of them.
(hope you’re glad. I’ve spent too much time scrolling through screenshots to find these)
24. Do you have a primary/preferred stronghold?
I have only three strongholds, and two of them are just for Legacy cargo hold for those characters who can’t yet travel to the fleet. The one I actually try to decorate is on Nar Shadaa, and it’s story wise: one of my characters eventually opens a cantina on Nar Shadaa, so I want to decorate this stronghold as cantina type, though I’m poor and can’t get enough required decorations.
25. Mind sharing some screenshots of your stronghold(s)?
I don’t! I said I wanted to make this stronghold as cantina type, but I didn’t say I had much of success there, so don’t expect anything extraordinary.
The entrance
The most “cantina type” places
Of course, I haven’t unlocked every room in the stronghold, but I’m working on it!
27. If you could make any current NPC a player companion, who would you pick?
Jonas Balkar. Tora. Watcher Two. Thana Vesh. Shae Vizla (oh wait, she is a companion, I just can’t have her. My mistake). Also it would be nice to make Holiday a companion on her own.

Porting High Hat from GDScript to C#
So Godot 3.0 just released and with it comes C# support. I've been working on High Hat for awhile now and it has been running on a development build of Godot 3.0 for about 8 months. But up until this point it has been 100% GDScript (Godot's custom scripting language). For a variety of reasons (which I will cover in a bit) I decided to port High Hat over. I'm pretty much done at this point, so I figured I'd share some of the things I learned along the way.
First: can you guess which side is GDScript and which one is C#?
Why C# ?
Normally I wouldn't waste time on a language port. Your language is rarely your bottleneck and unless the port opens up new platforms, you won't make anyone but your dev team happier. But my case is special I swear! High Hat is my first game built in Godot. It started as an experiment and slowly, organically grew into a full (insane) game. Additionally when I started I didn't know good Godot design patterns. There's tons of failed / malformed / abandoned / half implemented ideas in the old GDScript codebase that made it hard to move forward at the rate I wanted to. At this point I knew how the engine worked and what I wanted the game architecture to look like. High Hat needed a rewrite and thanks to the fantastic work on Godot 3.0 I had a few options:
GDScript
I could just take what I learned and do the rewrite in GDScript. GDscript is a simple and easy scripting language with fantastic integration with the engine. I don't want to discourage people from using it because it is absolutely the right choice for many people. Unfortunately for me its benefits don't outweigh its drawbacks. First, it is a dynamically typed language. I think they have their place, but I personally dislike them for large projects ... especially games. They make bad designs easier, refactors harder, and the build/run/verify loop longer. Statically typed languages (generally) have more compile time checks that surface errors that would otherwise be exposed at runtime in dynamic languages. This problem is exacerbated in games, which generally have longer startup times and take more time to set up the scenarios you want to test. Due to the language's simplicity (no abstract classes, interfaces, etc) it makes abstractions much harder.
A GDNative language binding (C++, D, Nim)
GDNative lets you call native code from Godot without recompiling the engine. One use case is adding new "scripting" languages utilizing native code. GDNative languages are FAST compared to the other language options. I did a benchmark that tests a few scenarios and GDNative languages were the clear winners (none of the tests were computationally intense and GDNative was still over 4x faster than GDScript). GDNative's mastermind, @Karroffel, did a great job here and I almost went this route, but it currently has some high friction areas that need improvement. First, the editor integration is less than ideal. Debugging is possible but difficult. When I tested the Nim bindings I had to run a new instance of Godot that booted into my game, then attach a GDB instance to that. Some variables displayed correctly in GDB but others were just garbage. I also needed to manually build the GDNative library after every change (rather than having it automatically build when pressing the "play" button). You need a separate build for each platform you want to deploy to (not much can be done about that). Additionally, it requires adding a new .gdns file for every native class you want to use as a script. This takes time and fills my repo with cruft.
GDNative is probably the future of Godot. Thanks to it, Godot is now ahead of Unity and on par with Unreal when it comes to language support. I suspect it will continue to gain ground as more people create bindings. The problems I mentioned above are not inherent to the implementation ... they're just small things that haven't been solved yet. GDNative is still young so I'll cut it some slack. I consider it to be the best thing to come out of the 3.0 release and I will definitely use it in the future.
C#
C# was also pretty fast in my benchmarks. There are a few bottlenecks that are already being addressed. I use C# every day for my job so it was already the "comfy" choice for me. It's static, it has a large gamedev community (thanks to Unity, MonoGame, and Unreal), it has a great package manager, lots of tooling, and a ton of syntactic niceties that the other languages don't have (pattern matching and LINQ come to mind). I've been following the binding's development since its inception and I've studied the code, so I understand the implementation and its tradeoffs.
C# was clearly the right choice for me, but that doesn't mean it is the right choice for you. Play with each of the options and see what sticks!
C# Patterns in Godot
Throughout the port I picked up a few opinions and tricks that I figured I'd share.
Avoid crossing the language barrier
Marshalling (converting types between C# and C++) can be expensive. The bindings currently have a few naive conversions that incur some pretty serious overhead. These are already fixed, but the pull request hasn't been merged yet on Github. The situation will be better soon, but there will always be nonzero overhead.
Pretty much all Godot API calls will incur this overhead. But don't worry too much about it ... every Godot language type except C++ modules will have this problem and its generally small enough that you don't need to think about it.
Don't use custom signals ever. Use C# events. They are better in every way. This is going to be controversial, but hear me out:
Signals are almost definitely slower. Upon connection they require string matching/hashing (the signal name and the function name) as well as reflection (to grab a C# function pointer using the function name string). Ditto for emitting them. Signals are cool but they're more complexity than we need.
Events are typesafe
Events don't require crossing the language barrier
Events can be easily refactored
Events can be autocompleted
Events can use lambda functions
I rest my case
Be wary of the garbage collector
GDScript uses explicit free calls (or queue_free) and reference counting to manage memory. C# uses a garbage collector. This means every so often execution will pause to find unused objects and free them. This can cause tangible stuttering so you want to avoid large GC pauses. I won't go in to detail here, but basically avoid allocations and deallocations (especially in large batches) as much as you can. Reuse objects when possible.
Object Pooling is a common way to avoid allocations (and thus GC pauses) by reusing old objects instead of creating new ones. Godot currently doesn't have a pooling system, but I have a feeling that it might get one in the future. You could also implement one yourself.
Use my input system!
It's free and open source: https://github.com/cart/godot-inputsharp
It circumvents the action system. Uses enums instead of strings
It circumvents the _Input handler. Uses C# events instead! (backed by a single _Input handler).
Stop caring about input types. Anything can be treated as an axis or a button based on the context.
Makes multiplayer easier. One Input object per device that exclusively tracks its device's input events.
Mockable. A great way to implement AIs: they have "virtual" joysticks.
Ensures unique device ids. Godot input ids are unique within a device type, but not across all devices.
It might be faster because it doesn't do string comparisons when checking events. I'm not sure and I probably won't verify this. It doesn't matter that much
Virtual axes: turn two buttons / triggers / axis directions (with a range from 0 to 1) into a new axis (with a range of -1 to 1) with one function call. I use this to create a horizontal axis input that maps to both keyboards (left and right keys) and joysticks (left and right on the analog stick)
It's still in its early stages. It's undocumented and relatively untested. It's also not a library right now because at this stage I don't want to deal with compiling multiple projects for my game. This might change as it matures and I stop iterating as quickly.
Take advantage of C#'s class extensions
Godot and the C# bindings are great, but every so often I identify functionality that the core types are missing that I'm constantly re-implementing. In GDScript, I just duplicated code or moved it to a static class, but C# has extensions!
Here is my current NodeExtensions.cs
Heres is my current MathExtensions.cs
Use LINQ
It significantly reduces the amount of code you write and makes it easier to understand. Well worth the cost of abstraction.
Conclusion
I've spent a couple of hours a day for about two weeks porting everything over and I consider it well worth the effort. My code base is smaller, it runs faster, and it's easier to understand. But what works for me might not work for you blah blah blah I'm done talking. Now back to your regularly scheduled gifs of blobby creatures stacking hats on their heads.

[nextpage title=”Introduction and Features”]
The year is running just before the last lap and probably all the tech giants have shown their cards. Whether it’s Samsung, Apple or LG, everyone of them had launched their flagship phones this year – namely iPhone 8 and X, Galaxy Note 8 and V30 respectively. Left one was Huawei, and they also brought their Mate 10 series of smartphones last month.
Huawei Pakistan launched the duo of the flagship Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro in Pakistan earlier this month. Huawei also launched the cheaper model among them, dubbed Mate 10 lite for the developing markets. So the customers here in Pakistan also saw the release of this cheaper model.
Frankly, the Mate 10 lite has already attracted the masses specially for its premium build and features which costs only PKR 30,000/- On the other hand the Mate 10 Pro is the expensive deal among them costing PKR 88,000/- while the standard Mate 10 model is priced at PKR 70,000/-
We had our hands-on with the all of the three Mates during the launch event, the standard Mate 10 is what you are reading about here. We’ll see if it’s really worth for what it costs.
Introduction
Huawei has kicked out the metal finish for Mate 10 and instead used the all glass finish that makes the phone attractive in the wild. Running along the top tier manufacturers, Huawei also has joined in the narrow-bezel form factor for the Mate 10 smartphone.
Not to mention the Quad HD resolution which is what Huawei is adapting slowly but still refraining from doing so. Interesting fact is that the expensive Mate 10 Pro has only full HD+ resolution while this standard Mate 10 has a QHD resolution of 2560×1440 pixels.
Huawei calls the new Mate 10, an intelligent machine. That’s due to the fact it has put in its new Kirin 970 processor – launched in September. The processor equips with eight ARM cores – 4x Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.4GHz and 4x Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. Huawei has really made this processor at its excellence till date to give real competition to other manufacturers. The processor is combination of TSMC’s 10nm FinFet+ manufacturing process, a high-end GPU Mali-G72 MP12 and a separate NPU (Neural-Network Processing Unit) to accelerate on-device machine learning. That makes the device artificially more intelligent and faster.
Huawei has claimed that its NPU is rated at 1.92TFLOPs of FP16 compute performance which 3 times faster than Kirin 960’s GPU. Build and Design
I always prefer to note down the first impressions of a smartphone when writing a review. Like wise Huawei seems to be doing same with a few previous flagships specially since Mate 8. It some how manages to impress with the first looks of the the phone.
Killing the full-metal design on previous Mate devices, Huawei chooses the glass body on Mate 10. The 3D glass body is symmetrically curved on all four ends of the back panel.
For some non-serious reason people usually taunt Huawei for copying others. But considering the long range of devices, Huawei’s designs are more dynamic which keep changing at any extent. Mate 10, however, is the greatest and most unexpected face-lift of Huawei’s design language.
An inch-high stripe that goes from one edge to the other crossing over the dual-camera arrayed vertically, makes the design unique and more appealing.
Components and Controls
Huawei makes a good use of that wide space by placing dual-LED flash on one side and the laser sensor for autofocus on the other. Between them there’s “Leica” branding and the optics labeling which refers to SUMMILUX-H lens. Leaving all the space below the camera stripe, Huawei branding comes at the lower portion with product labeling.
To my dislikes, the fingerprint scanner is not present on the back side. Instead it’s on the front below the screen to your thumb’s reach.
This sure is a personal preference, but I’d like the fingerprint sensor to the reach of my index finger – that’s on the back. Huawei mostly places the sensor there but most recently with it’s opting for a front-mounted fingerprint scanners. Second thought can be given only if it’s fast enough to work with a thin stripe to recognize a part of your thumb. Mate 10 actually does the job and is that fast to leave no objections. Still I’ll prefer it to have on its back, and in fact the Mate 10 Pro has it on the back.
The sensor on the front, while by default it’s just a home key, it can serve more than just that. Dubbed as Navigation key, if enabled, the virtual on-screen navigation will turn off and the swipe gestures on the navigation key will guide the system to go back and forth. Such as a simple touch will perform as back key, touch and hold will take you to the home screen, left or right swipe will bring up the recent tasks view. For Google App, you just need to swipe up from the bottom edge of the display.
Those slim bezel on top and bottom are sure appealing. On top, we have a metal grill covering the earpiece which also works as a secondary speaker and a front-facing camera which two are pretty visible. Other hidden stuff include some basic sensors – proximity, ambient etc.
USB Type-C has now been a common thing among flagships and Mate 10 is no exception. With a healthy improvement this is now USB 3.1. Along side on the bottom, there is a primary speaker and then a mouthpiece.
The top side hosts a 3.5mm audio jack on one end while on the other, there’s secondary mic for active noise cancellation. In addition, there is an IR blaster as well.
It’s worth mentioning that the Mate 10 Pro doesn’t have a traditional 3.5mm audio jack. So you can guess that Huawei has shown its transition to abandon the the feature in next future.
Power button and the volume buttons are on the right like always.
On the left, there is only a single hybrid slot for dual-SIM cards and microSD card. You know that you can not use microSD card when using two SIM cards.
[nextpage title=”Display”]
Display
The bezel-less phenomenon is now as into era as only a year old smartphone will give you some bulky feel. Those two bezels specially on top and bottom will now be the hurting elements of a smartphone. When it’s a flagship phone costing you some heavy load on your pocket will probably abuse the manufacturer.
After Xiaomi, LG, Samsung and Apple, even Vivo the had launched its mid-ranger with thin bezels. All of them have their own naming to refer to their bezel-less screens. Let’s cut it short, Huawei didn’t take the risk and joined the narrow-bezel league and calls it the FullView display.
Its nearly bezel-less screen makes the overall design a bit smaller than its predecessor with the same display size of 5.9-inch. The display panel is still IPS on the standard Mate 10, unlike the AMOLED used in Pro model. It’s worth mentioning here when we saw them both side by side, they hardly gave any different feel. However we didn’t test them in extreme situations where an AMOLED display sure would beat the IPS easily.
Left: Huawei Mate 10 • Right: Huawei Mate 10 Pro
When talking about Mate 10’s IPS display alone it’s good both indoors and outdoors under direct sunlight. In fact the blacks were deeper than most IPS panels, while the maximum brightness on whites could boost up to over 1000 lux. The 16:9 FullView display of Mate 10 features HDR10.
With deep blacks, the contrast ratio is also impressive. Auto brightness works fine but the best thing about it is that you can handle the warmness just according to your need. Eye comfort is really good for me as the pure white doesn’t impress me. It lets you move from cooler to warmer temperature in continuous slider. When Eye comfort is not in use, there is the Color temperature controller which allows you to move around the color palette to introduce some color variations from cooler to warmer color range.
[nextpage title=”Software and User Interface”]
Software and User Interface
Huawei always releases new and updated software with its Mate flagship launch. That’s not uncommon now as well as the updated software is later rolled out to other recent Huawei devices. If you were familiar with the manufacturers software cycle, before Mate 10, it was running Android 7 Nougat on its flagship devices. On top Huawei’s EMUI 5.1 was the latest. But with the launch of Mate 10 smartphone, Huawei has skipped the a couple of version numbers and jumped straight to EMUI 8.
Why would the company do that, is not known but the key reason could be the alignment with Android 8 Oreo. It’s obvious indeed that Huawei has now chosen to match its EMUI releases with the core Android version. There is no issue with numbering but this change is actually good apparently.
Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8.0
The new EMUI 8 comes with some features which are powered by the dedicated NPU (Neural-Network Processing Unit) in the new Kirin 970 processor but not so exclusively limited to Mate 10. Huawei has promised to ship those machine learning features to Mate 9 and Huawei P10 with EMUI 8 update. Don’t expect them to be as efficient on those devices as on the Mate 10, due to the lack of on-board NPU.
Starting over with the user interfaces, home screen works more like previously, but Huawei has added the Google feed on the left most screen that you can turn on/off now. Default home screen style is just old without the app drawer but you can turn it by going through Settings > Display > Home screen style > Drawer. Huawei must move this option to the home screen customize settings, it will be more quick and easy that way.
Although Huawei hasn’t adapted all the Oreo features and may be shipping those in later updates, the major and most prominent impression you will have is the settings interface. It’s now more compact and grouped into categories. Search settings feature is still there which is already the best thing to have.
Split-screen can be managed easily from recent tasks view where you just have to tap & hold a task until a placeholder is appeared on top edge. You just need to drag and move the held task into the placeholder. It will instantly initiate the the split-screen mode with the selected task set in one window while the recent tasks view in the other window. The split-screen can also be initiated with a Knuckle gesture of line through the mid of the screen.
In addition to common on-screen navigation buttons, and the fingerprint scanner swipe gestures for navigation, Mate 10 provides another navigation control – Navigation Dock. When enabled, a dock is appeared floating on the screen which you can simply tap, tap & hold, hold & stretch and drag to respectively navigate to back, home, recent tasks view or move the dock itself.
Even though the Mate 10 features WQHD resolution of 2560×1440, the system by default is set to 1080p resolution to keep the power consumption at normal. Switching the resolution will only sharpen or soften the elements on the screen, but will not change the size of the elements. You can change the system wise text size and other elements size separately from the resolution. I actually liked that way to keep the resolution at 1080p while having the view size and text size as small. That also gimmicks higher resolution.
One of the many features that involve the on-board AI of Mate 10, include the live translation. Huawei has partnered with Microsoft and the Microsoft Translator app comes pre-installed in Mate 10. The new and improved Microsoft Translator app already has may features including machine learning. With Mate 10’s on-device NPU, the app is now more faster to work with translations. Google Translate app is in pipeline that will work accordingly on Mate 10 with support of the NPU.
Talking about the machine learning and NPU on Mate 10, it leads to many elements within the phone. Such as when taking photographs, it comes into action, identifies objects and adjust the settings. Likewise the system keeps working with its abilities and also arrange your photos in gallery categorically.
It identifies the subjects, faces and scenes in the photos and arrange them accordingly. Such a thing Google’s Photos app already do at some extent however. Likewise in gallery, the deleted images now go into trash and stay there for 30 days before permanently deletion.
EMUI Desktop / Huawei Projection
Huawei calls it projection. It allows you to connect your phone to a monitor or a TV that makes up a kind of PC. The feature has been there for quite a while after Microsoft introduced continuum with Lumia 950 XL smartphone. But all variations after since, required some kind of dock station which is not the case with new Huawei Mate 10. You can buy any USB Type-C to HDMI cable adapter or dongle and directly connect the Mate 10 to a large screen. I used this cable, available from AliExpress for $16 (Rs. ~1600).
Standard USB Type-C to HDMI adapter cable
Note: Each adapter cable may have different internal design of wiring and may not work as expected. This applies to both; one-to-one interface adapter cable and one-to-many interface adapter hub.
EMUI 8 – Desktop UI
Huawei offers EMUI Desktop UI on the connected large screen while on the same time your phone can work as Virtual keyboard and mouse. Connections via Bluetooth is also supported so you can connect your traditional Bluetooth mouse or keyboard as well.
Mate 10 Projection – Virtual keyboard & mouse
The interface is simply straight forward with a desktop having a set of icons and task-bar along that a start button, system tray and standard Android navigation keys on the right corner. However, only a few apps seem to be compatible to run on desktop mode which are Files, Chrome browser, Notepad, Galley,
and Videos.
Desktop Icons and Start/Quick Buttons
System Tray and Notifications
Chrome browser still thinks that you are running it on a mobile device, well you are actually. The viewport is large though and HTML5 based responsive website work seamlessly as they would on a PC browser. However the browser seems to be reporting with mobile based user agent, hence the websites with non-responsive special versions respond with the minimal and limited mobile versions. The example is mobile version of YouTube.
YouTube’s mobile version on desktop mode
Large gallery view on Mate 10 Projection
You can open gallery and have a look on the photos you’ve taken with the phone among your friends and family. Videos are also there to watch.
There could be some apps (specially third-party ones) which might not be compatible on projection but your favorite facebook, WhatsApp and twitter were there. Additionally for office work, you have access to PowerPoint, Excel and Word apps including many others.
Thirdparty apps
Stacked Apps on Desktop
Multitask switcher
Multitask switcher interface is most likely the one in Windows 10 with (win+tab). If you are thinking about how notifications will work in projection mode, then you should not. Notifications will not show up on the large screen to prevent the system interrupts you while showing something to your family, friends or colleagues. You can, however find them in the system tray that is also much like in Windows 10.
Games also work on the large screen but you won’t bother to play them because they are not that much good in interaction when running on projection.
Huawei Projection is not kind of something that replaces a desktop PC but it can be a good medium to project your phone’s content on large screen to share your moments with your friends and family or give a presentation to your co-workers.
[nextpage title=”System and Battery Performance”]
System Performance
Huawei’s both new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro ship with proprietary HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset. In numbers, it’s not so different from the Kirin 960 but the latest chip comes packed with a dedicated NPU (a Neural-Network Processing Unit) for faster on-board machine learning AI processing. Further the 970 is built on 10nm manufacturing process which is more more energy and power efficient.
The basic concept of all this is that the system doesn’t need to go around the internet for finding information about what’s being shown on the screen. The built-in unit – NPU has the capability of learning and adapting behavior and performing actions right on the phone in a faster way.
Currently the system is very limited to specific tasks which will be using the NPU. Huawei has told that new features will be coming in future which will take advantage of the NPU as well as encourage third parties to work with this unit for more adapting platform.
For instance, the Kirin 970 chip inside Mate 10 equips with an octa-core processor – four high-performance Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.36 GHz and four energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. There is an i7 co-processor and world’s first Mali-G72 MP12 GPU. NPU has already been listed at various occasions above.
Along with that processing power, the Mate 10 only gives you a 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The other Mate 10 Pro has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage but that’s the difference between the both regarding memory power and memory. 6GB of RAM sure will have a plus point with for more background tasks as well as 128GB is also more impressive. But the Mate 10 with what it has is also enough to stand among the top tier smartphones.
I have been using the Mate 10 as my primary device with both the SIMs active for over two weeks. I have put this phone from a regular user’s device to a geeky’s one and it performed to the expectations as derived from company’s claims. This phone did really well with its performance no matter what was thrown to it – whether it’s camera, opening or switching apps. Mortal Kombat, Need for Speed Nitro, Asphalt Xtreme, Modern Combat 5 were among the games I tried on it and they were good enough to mention with fast start and loading, and no lag.
Benchmark Tests
Let’s kill the regular usability if you are wondering about some benchmark test. We put it through the most popular benchmark tools and it actually showed its power to be among top lineup. Just forget Apple’s latest A11 chip in iPhone 8 and 8 Plus as it’s no way near that. Keep it under the Android umbrella and count it on top among other flagships including.
Geekbench 4 / AnTuTu 6
Geekbench 4 – Single-Core Score: 1898, Multi-Core Score: 6480 • AnTuTu 6 Score: 174341
Basemark OS II / Basemark OS X
Basemark OS II Score – 3152 • Basemark OS X Score – 43355
Vellamo
Vellamo Metal: 4091 • Vellamo Multicore: 5123
Battery Performance
With 4000mAh battery, Huawei promises that Mate 10 will keep up similar to the Mate 9. The battery itself has not been changed in capacity as well.
Mate 10 managed to give an average of 2 days per full charge on regular usage that includes both the Wi-Fi and LTE mobile data as well as location always-on. Give it some tough job with an hour of navigation, two hour of video playback, a couple of hours of web browsing and heavy use of camera with all your free time playing a game after game – then do not expect this phone to live up to a full day.
The phone supports Huawei’s proprietary SuperCharge technology with 5V and 4.5A. It’s one of the best charging in smartphones that doesn’t heat up the phone while charging faster – thanks to the low voltage battery. The shipped charger comes also has the standard 5V/2A as well and it can charge a fully drained Mate 10 up to 58% in 30 minutes.
[nextpage title=”Camera – Still and Video”]
Camera
Huawei Mate 10 has a 13 MP RGB sensor paired with a 20 MP monochrome sensor on the back. Both of which have Leica’s Summilux-H lenses with f/1.6 which is an important upgrade over previous cameras.
Where as the monochrome sensor is already good at producing nice image detail with reduced noise, the RGB sensor in Mate 10 has an OIS (optical image stabilizer) which really should perform better in low-light situations.
The main camera unit in Huawei Mate 10 does a great job. Mate 10’s camera features a dual-ISP (image signal processor) to perform better in low-light conditions and handling noise reduction in a better way. It has four-way hybrid autofocus combined with phase detection, laser, depth and contrast which helps the system to focus in almost all lighting conditions.
NPU specially comes into action with the camera that makes the automatic settings most intelligent. The system currently can recognize 14 scenes and objects and automatically adjusts settings for optimal image output. Still you have the Pro Camera mode right there if you don’t like the auto adjustments. In fact, the Pro Camera can be reached more easily in EMUI 8 than before.
NPU also supports the camera to reduce motion blur with AI based motion detection. Its hybrid digital zoom also gets support from the NPU to work fast and efficiently.
The camera interface mainly consists of three views, like previous iterations. It starts with the “viewfinder” in front, the right-swipe brings up the “camera modes” while the left-swipe brings on the “Settings” for the currently selected camera mode. Mate 10’s camera only supports hybrid digital zoom that works only when the resolution is set to 12MP. That actually allows the system to perform intelligent operations on data obtained from the multiple high-res images and provide a closer but detailed cropped image. Huawei calls it the hybrid digital zoom up to 2x. Going further up to 10x will be traditional digital zoom which will destroy the image detail.

Viewfinder – Video mode
EMUI 8 has also improved the native camera user interface and the first noticeable element was that the Pro Camera mode was now linked to the normal interface. You don’t need to open the camera switches pane for Pro Photo and Pro Video modes as they are now combined with the normal Photo and Video modes. On the viewfinder, right above the capture key there’s a node that you swipe up to turn on the Pro mode with manual camera options. Same can be done in video mode.
Pro Mode – Photo
Pro Mode – ISO
Pro Mode – Shutter

Pro Mode – Video
Huawei Mate 10 produces pretty impressive images out of its camera. The main 12MP RGB camera captures great shots with impressive detail at brick level and the foliage is rendered amazingly on trees with less noise. Dynamic range on the other hand is also superb but you would feel to have little less poppy colors in the photos because they are more closer to the real life scene as I noticed. To help you with that Huawei has brought the Leica’s “Vivid” switch right on top of the viewfinder for quick access. Whenever you feel the image you want should have more colors popped out, you can switch to two Leica switches vivid or smooth from the standard one. Or you can always have it set to vivid if you like, the camera will maintain your selection on the next visit.
The only bad thing about the camera is that it’s little aggressive on sharpening. The images are over-sharpened which can mostly hurt at edges of the object in the image as well as the smaller distant objects or the text. This shouldn’t be taken as a bad thing however because it can be fixed via software update.

Huawei Mate 10 – Camera samples in outdoors or good light
As mentioned about the superb dynamic range, Huawei’s AI is most probably working in this case too. Most of the time I had to stay from using the HDR mode by myself because mostly they were good at the dynamic range.
Low light shots
When launched, the Mate 10 was expected to give really good shots with f/1.6 lenses on the main cameras. After having it tried, I can tell that it actually makes some significant improvement in low light. In addition the OIS is also working good to manage the hand-shake with longer shutter speeds up to 1/5th of the second.

2x Hybrid Zoom
Also the 2x zoom referred as hybrid zoom makes the shots out to have impressive detail for a digital zoom shot. It’s, as told above, a result of multiple frames or shots the camera takes during the capture moment. Combined those frames, the final image comes with impressive detail. Mate 10’s camera take shots at 27mm (35mm equivalent) focal length while the 2x zoom shot was recorded at 54mm.

Variable/Wide Aperture and Portrait Mode
The bokeh effect has been in the smartphone camera game since the launch of dual-camera configuration. Huawei has been offering the feature since Huawei P9. The feature offers to focus on an object and set the aperture value from f/0.95 to f/16. The feature has been improved and works in both color and monochrome modes.
Portrait mode on the other hand has the similar effect and focuses on detected faces while blurring out the background. However it doesn’t allow to change the aperture value and you have to stick to what the system automatically adjusts.

[nextpage title=”Conclusion & Verdict”]
Overview
Huawei has justified with its flagship phone making it stand among the top of the line smartphones, even ahead of all at some points. Mate 10 is really an upgrade in every aspect from the previous version. I’d call the design as more iconic and attractive than others which are still following their old designs with minor changes. Battery is quite good and power efficient in the phone – thanks to the AI optimization.
Even though the Kirin 970 is running on the same cores as was the predecessor 960, it does the job with more power but even efficiently. The most prominent element of processor is the dedicated NPU that really makes things faster in the Mate 10. It’s one of the first devices running Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box with significant changes in EMUI user experience.
The two cameras on the back are also same at resolution as previous version but brighter lenses on top from Leica. But sad to have no water-proofing in Mate 10 as it’s IP53 which, frankly, is nothing. Mate 10 Pro is water resistant though with IP67 rating. Mate 10, however, has a splash-proof glass.
Another thing where consumers most probably would be confused at is the screen. It’s the first time ever when a Pro model of a smartphone with upgraded elements, has actually a lower display resolution. You must know that the Mate 10 standard model has higher QuadHD resolution of 1440p while the Mate 10 Pro has a 1080p display but at 18:9 aspect ratio. So you will have to take care about that when buying one of the two and don’t be mistaken.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that when you look at the Mate 10 the very first time, it attracts you. The first impression does count but it’s not really all that you need to look at. You have to look into it, to know what you are paying for.
Mate 10 indeed has a better impression to fall for, it has brilliant all-glass body, it has powered up CPU along with the top lined GPU, improved and brighter Leica optics which bring some improved photographs out of the camera, then the the high resolution display is too crisp and sharp even on an IPS panel.
When you look at these features and price, it does stand among the most recent flagships like LG V30 and Galaxy Note 8. You sure will be giving up on some features and acquiring some others when choosing from these three smartphones or may be a few others. Where Note 8 is rather more expensive by over Rs. 30,000, LG V30 is not even available officially in Pakistan.
Galaxy Note 8 • Huawei Mate 9
Well if you consider the pricing factor more importantly, then you must keep in mind that the last year’s Mate 9, which has same CPU with same core-configuration (except the new NPU), a little lower GPU but same RAM and storage, is still available to buy for Rs. 20,000 less. You sure will lose some significant features in the camera including the brighter lens but the image sensors themselves are still same and have OIS too which produces pretty much equal photographs. EMUI 8 is also promised upgrade for Mate 9 as well. So you are the one to make the decision before Huawei makes it first to discontinue it.
