ain't it a gentle sound
Pairing:Â Dewdrop x f!Reader
Rating:Â Explicit
18+ ONLY MINORS DO NOT INTERACT
Tags:Â ghouls being ghouls, ghouls being horny, finger fucking
Words:Â 2,201
Summary:Â Swiss warned you about the other ghouls. You weren't prepared for an encounter like this.
a/n:Â sequel to the undone and the divine. i've decided this is now part of what i'm going to be calling the ghoul bicycle series because clearly reader needs to get railed by every ghoul and ghoulette to fulfill their destiny of becoming ghoul consort. so be it.
~~~
âHey,â Swiss says quietly as he watches you hook the back of your bra. âI think I should give you a heads up about something.â
You lean over to shimmy your breasts into the cups and when you straighten your back to meet his gaze, he looks nervous.
âWhat?â you ask slowly, eyes narrowing.Â
âRemember what I said about uhâŚmarking you?â
Your hand flies to your neck to rub against the various purple bites that decorated your throat. You had almost forgotten he had done that and you sigh when the realization hits you that you wonât be able to hide all of them with your habit. Ah well.
âTheyâll fade soon, yeah?â you say, bending over to pick up your shirt off his bedroom floor. âBut I like them, if thatâs what youâre wondering.â
He flashes you that signature megawatt smile and preens a little before remembering what he was intending to tell you.
âIâm glad but erâŚjust letting you know. When the other ghouls learn that weâveâŚbeen togetherâŚtheyâre going to start approaching you.â
âFor? Iâoh. Oh.â You remember what the other ghouls told you yesterday about how theyâve all been into you. âBut now that Iâm, yâknow, not a virgin anymore wonât things change? Surely Iâll smell different. Whatever that means.â
âYeah, youâll smell different,â Swiss says, his voice going up a few octaves. âYouâll smell like ghoul.â
You finish adjusting your shirt and put your hands on your hips to look at him dead on.
âSwiss, what exactly are you trying to say here?â
He heaves a deep sigh and scratches the side of his head, tail flicking behind him anxiously.
âThe thing about ghouls is weâŚwe share everything.â
Oh.
âEverything,â you say flatly, to which he nods emphatically with a slightly sheepish smile. You must have quite the expression on your face as his grin rapidly fades and he approaches you, arms extended.
âHey listen,â he says as he puts his hands on your shoulders, massaging gently, âif youâre not into it I get it. You can tell them to fuck off. Iâll tell them to fuck off.â
Your eyes move from his chest up to his earnest gaze and the slightest hint of a grin curls your lips. Suddenly youâre filled with warmth at the thought of this frankly stunning group of ghouls and ghoulettes expressing interest in little old you. Swiss can practically see the string of filth going through your head as your eyes glaze over a little and he snickers.
âCheck you out,â he says slyly, âIâve made a little deviant out of you, huh? Get dicked down once and all of a suddenââ
Before he can finish the sentence, you shove him away and roll your eyes, but your cheeks flush because heâs right. And he knows it.
âFuck off,â you snarl with no real malice behind it. âI was a virgin, not fucking ignorant. I know what gets me off.â
Swiss has his head thrown back, positively crowing and you make a noise of disgust as you move to the door.
âHey!â he says, reaching out to grab you one more time and pull you in to kiss the top of your head. âHave fun.â
â
After you shut Swissâ door you make your way down the long hallway and out of the den. Your mind is spinning with the possibilities - what would the other ghouls say to you? How would they act? The thrill of anticipation has you practically bouncing on your way back to your quarters.
Little did you know you were setting yourself up for disappointment.
A couple weeks passed and you hadnât even seen a ghoul - none passed you in the halls, none visited you at your quarters, none sought you out in the dining hall - let alone been propositioned by one. You saw Swiss only in passing, his time consumed with practice and whatever ghoul duties entailed and you had duties of your own to complete. Frankly, you were starting to feel a bit put-out and began wondering if there was something wrong with you. Why else would all of them, who you had until recently called friends, avoid you so desperately? These are the thoughts that echo through your mind late one evening as you work library duty. The other siblings had left early after you told them you would finish shelving the remaining carts of books on your own. Tears begin to well in your eyes as you shove a particularly large tome on binding magic into its place on the shelf. Annoyed, you brush them away with the back of your hand and shake your head to clear your thoughts. Youâre about to pick up another book when a low voice calls out from the stacks across the aisle from you.
âWhy the tears, sweetheart?â
You whirl around and see a slight figure emerge from the darkness, eyes glowing. Your heart skips a beat when the ghoul steps into the dim light of the overhead lamp.
âDew! Lilithâs tits where the fuck did you come from?â
âHell,â he says simply as he saunters over to you with his hands in his pockets, tail swaying lazily behind him. You give him a tired look and he grins, revealing sharp teeth.
âBeen a while,â you begin rather coldly. âFunny how you all just disappeared and decided not to speak to me anymore.â
Dew frowns as he traces the gilded lettering of a book on the desk with a single claw.
âWe were waiting.â
âFor what?â
âFor those fucking hickeys Swiss gave you to disappear. Fucking dramatic, I told you. Making sure all of us knew what he did with you.â
Your irritation melts away and is replaced with something much warmer.
âSoâŚwhat are you doing here?â you ask innocently, tapping your fingers against the desk.
âCalled dibs on you didnât I? Iâm here to make good on that.â
You can feel the wetness between your thighs seep through your underwear and before you can utter another word, heâs on you. For someone so slim heâs alarmingly strong, pushing your back into the edge of the mahogany. His hand is threaded in your hair, cradling the back of your scalp with his lips a breath away from yours.
âDo you want me?â he asks, all slyness and sharp teeth.
You nod, your head still in his strong grip as he leans in to tease his lips against yours. When you press forward to meet them, he pulls back again with a little laugh.
âI want to hear you say it,â he purrs, claws scratching gently at your scalp. âTell me.â
âI want you,â you say, the lowness of your voice startling you. âHere. Now.â
His smirk draws into a full sharp-toothed grin before he finally presses his lips to yours. His kiss is forceful, almost bruising as if he is trying to consume you. When you open your mouth to his probing he groans and fists your hair, licking into your mouth as he pushes you further into the edge of the desk. You can feel his cock pressing into your belly as he takes and takes from you, tail wrapping around you to rub at the small of your back. You barely manage to pull away to breathe, causing him to growl. When you finally pull back slightly despite his iron grip, you reach up to touch his face. Heâs taken aback by the tenderness of the gesture and nuzzles into your hand ever-so-slightly.
âEasy, Dew,â you breathe. âIâm not going anywhere.â
At this, he ducks his head into the crook of your neck to inhale deep.
âFucking love your smell,â he groans, rutting slightly against you, âso sweet.â
âEven after Swissââ
âEspecially after that. Fuck I want you. I want to see the others with you,â he licks a stripe from your shoulder to your ear. âWant to watch you try to take Mountainâs cock. Aetherâs too. Fuck you have no idea what the ghoulettes are gonna do to you, do you?â
Youâre quickly soaking through your panties and you can feel your wetness sliding down the inside of your thigh under your skirt. When he takes your earlobe between his sharp teeth to nibble at it, your moan echoes through the stacks. The thought of all of them having you, maybe even several at a time, makes you arch your back and hook your leg around Dewdropâs calf.
He chuckles softly right in your ear as his hands slide down your thighs to the hem of your skirt.Â
âBut for now, I wanna feel that sweet pussy clench around my fingers.â
You nod, in a daze as he puts his hands under your thighs and with his surprising strength, picks you up and places you on the desk. With some maneuvering from you he rucks your skirt up over your hips and trails his fingers along your clothed cunt.
âFucking hell youâre sopping,â he breathes as you bite your lip and nod once more.
âAll for you, Dew,â you moan as he pushes his thumb against the fabric to brush your clit.
âAll for me,â he repeats, cocking his head. âWell if you insist.â
In an instant, heâs pushed the gusset of your panties to the side. When his bare, guitar-calloused fingers slowly swipe through your folds your head falls back. He repeats the action several times as you lift your hips to make little circles, encouraging him. When his thumb finds your clit, you grip the edge of the desk with white knuckles. He takes his time spreading your wetness around the bud as you moan into the darkened room.Â
âFuck, Dew,â you whine. âPlease.â
He knows exactly what youâre asking for as he slides his fingers lower and teases at your entrance.
âGonna make you feel so good, babe,â he says hoarsely, clearly affected by your display. âGonna make you scream.â
When he finally, slowly slips one finger inside of you, your eyes roll back in your head. He begins to fuck you at a steady pace, and your hips jerk to meet each thrust.Â
âMore,â you pant after several minutes and he laughs at your desperation but adds a second finger nonetheless. Heâs pistoning his fingers in and out of you roughly but when he curls them just soâoh. Youâre certain anyone passing the library at this time of night can hear your cries but you canât bring yourself to care. Heâs watching you with gleaming eyes, tail shaking steadily back and forth.
âTake my fingers so good,â he breathes, âthink you could take one more?â
You almost fall backwards against the bookcase at the thought before whining an affirmative response. When he slips the third finger in and crooks it against that fucking spot you feel hysterical, cries bouncing off the walls of the cavernous room. Youâre babbling desperate nonsense at him, urging him not to stop please donât stop and he obliges, fingers pistoning in and out of you with unbelievable force.
âGonna cum for me?â he asks, making you whimper.
âYes, yes, yes, so good Dew, fuck I love your fingers,â
Youâre almost there - so close, so close - and when the tightening in your spine slides into your core and makes your vision go blurry you do, as promised, scream.
Heâs grinning wildly before he smashes his lips into yours as he continues to fuck you through your orgasm. Tongues tangling, you moan desperately into his mouth as you feel the spade of his tail rubbing circles into your lower back. He devours the sounds you make hungrily, nose pressed firmly against your cheek. When you slowly begin to come down from your high he pulls away, panting.
âBeautiful,â he says, palm on the side of your face, thumb stroking your cheekbone. âFuck youâre beautiful.â
When he finally slips his fingers out of you, you are filled with a sudden emptiness that leaves you wanting. The feeling is remedied as you watch him raise his fingers to his mouth and slide them in lewdly. His eyes slide shut and he moans low as he carefully sucks your juices from the digits. Itâs hypnotic, watching him like this. When he opens his eyes again and removes his fingers from his lips youâre filled with a sudden deep swell of affection.
âAlways knew those fingers were good for something other than guitar,â you say quietly with a small smirk which he echoes.
âYeah? You think about my fingers a lot?â
You slide off the desk and attempt to stabilize yourself. Heâs got his hands on your hips steadying you and you feel that wonderful warm feeling again. Itâs not until you move in to hold him that you realize heâs still hard.
âDo youâŚâ
He waves you off and shakes his head.
âAnother time. Wanted to make you feel good tonight. And to apologize for ghosting you the past couple weeks.â
Sweet. âThanks, Dew. Hopefully Iâll see more of you around now, yeah?â
He nods with a sly grin, shoving his hands in his pockets.
âOh youâll be seeing us alright,â he says with a slight leer. âJust you wait.â
Donât worry, you think. Iâll be counting down the days.
Forget-Me-Not
Part One
Pairing; Gaz x male!reader
WC; ~6.3k
Warnings; none? I don't think?? Lemme know if there are any I should tag
Summary; gaz is definitely an attraction-at-first-sight kinda man/ it's time to wake up from that coma bby <33
A/n; when I said 'fluffy' I meant no one was gettin tortured this time around . Also, yes, this is definitely a set up for a ton of angst content <3 (note the unfinished ch title) There's going to be a "missing scenes" feel to this one, that's intentional.
Edit- I forgot to mention, this takes place before the other two fics, during the mw2 campaign (tho I definitely spread out the events bc no way could this all take place in the span of a week)
---"this is how we began,"---
Kyle had just gotten back from almost a week of being tossed around like a damn ping-pong ball when he met them. Or, rather, met you.
Fresh out of the showerâyet he swore he could still smell that filthy water on himselfâand bored out of his mind with nothing else to do.
It would take a bit of time before Laswell fed them some more actionable intel, and to Kyle's knowledge, the two other members of their team were already on the hunt in Mexico. So all there was to do was wait.
Well, Kyle figured he could probably use this time to catch up on some much needed restâbut where was the fun in that?
He couldn't sleep, not right now, not when Price had informed him of a new squad touching down at their base this afternoon. According to the captain, theyâaround five or so soldiersâwere just here to provide support if needed.
Kyle didn't think it was necessary, but it's not like he had any say in the matter. Especially since, apparently, the squad would only be using their base as a rest stop between their own missions. So, again, he didn't see the point.
But, like any curious soldier would doâand any who were a bit skeptical about their newest comradesâ, Kyle was already beelining his way to where he knew the newcomers would touch down.
Kyle had paid attention to the bare minimum information needed to avoid butting heads with the group, but never dug much further than that. Some American mercenaries under General Shepard's direct command and, as he'd mentioned before, here to provide support or something. Again, he hadn't paid much mind to the info thrown at him; honestly didn't think he'd end up meeting them anyhow.
Only when he finally gets out on the tarmac Kyle doesn't immediately rush to greet the new soldiers as he usually would. He comes to a full stop, previously resting heartbeat now running a marathon in his chest, gaze zeroed in on you.
Seeing youâyour form lax and almost casual in comparison to your stiff-postured comrades, a certain air of confidence surrounding youâmade Kyle wish he'd done a bit more research, asked a few more questions.
Dressed no differently from the rest, there was nothing particularly interesting about you. Nothing that should draw him in so wholly upon merely seeing you. He couldn't even see your face, for fuck's sakeânor could he see any of the rest of the squad's, but that's besides the point.
You hadn't even glanced his way and Kyle was acting like a schoolboy seeing his crush in the hall between classes.
âYou're staring, Kyle.â
âMh- Wha-?â He drags his attention away from you, wholly prepared to start spluttering out his defense when he recognizes the man who'd come to stand beside him. Noticing the barest hint of a smile pulling at his captain's mouth.
With a soft scoff Kyle looks away again, shaking his head a little. âNot at all, Capâ, just scoping out the newcomers. That's all.â
As anyone else would do, of course.
But they both know it's a lie.
Right before Price has the chance to open his mouth againâlikely to playfully call Kyle out on his bullshit in that gruff way of hisâthe aforementioned group of newbies comes to a stop in front of them.
Two in front, three fanned out behind them. Five after all, it seemed. You and some guy in the front, the rest Kyle wasn't sure of, their identities far too obscure to tell.
âCap-â The guy standing beside you starts to speak, only to be roughlyâalbeit probably playfullyânudged aside by your elbow, effectively cutting him off.
âGreetinâs Captain,â you say, amusement obvious in your tone, a slight wrinkling at the corners of your eyes betraying a hidden smile.
And Kyle would be lying if he said he wasn't completely enraptured as you spoke. Barely even registering the hand you held out to shake Priceâs hand.
âShadow 0-9, at your service,â though there's still a hint of humor in your voice, there's a certain air of professionalism to it too. Even as you retract your hand and raise it, fingers curled into a fist and thumb jutted out, to gesture to the soldiers around you.
Starting with the one beside you, then on to the three behind you, right to left. âJoined by Shadows 0-3, 1-4, 1-5, and 2-3.â
Then it's on to the actually serious stuff. âCommander Graves has sent us under the General's orders to stay here and provide assistance to your cause if need be. Though mostly we will be carrying out our own missions and using your base as a landing zone between operations.â
And again, amusedâyour flip-flopping emotions were going to give him whiplash at this rate.
This time clapping a heavy, gloved hand on 0-3âs shoulder, the slight crinkle around your eyes returning. âIf y'all got any questions, feel free to ask me,â lightly jostling 0-3 now. âthese imbeciles hardly got a clue what's goin' on half the time anyway.â
It's obvious the other four Shadows are used to your antics, as none of them even bat an eye at your, likely empty, insult to their intelligence.
Kyle zones out as Price goes over his own spiel, mind somehow blissfully blank as he stands beside his captain. Thumbs subconsciously slung through his belt loops in place of gripping his vest like he usually would, gaze focused on the group in front of him, giving all the impressions of some serious, gold-star sergeant attentively paying attention to his CO.
That couldn't be further from the truth.
The spell Kyle is under only breaks when Price directs his attention his way, drawing his focus when the man says, â-gent Garrick âere will show you lot around. All the standard things; barracks, mess, rec and the works-â
He then proceeds to space out again when your gaze slips from Price and to Kyle instead, not a single thing out of place as you analyze him.
It feels like you've got a scalpel to his skin, peeling away layer after layer. Through the muscle and fatty tissue, and deeper still, until you've reached the bone, and you keep going.
It's not uncomfortable, the way you tear into him like a rabid hound gobbles up a raw steak. Or maybe not rabid, no, you're not feral. Youâre cool and calculating and yet playful all the same. A working dog, a trained hound, then.
It's more.. Kyle doesn't think he harbors the vocabulary to put it into words how he feels about it; flayed alive under your watchful gaze. It's strange. But it's not.. bad.
It's been all of five seconds when your eyes flicks away from him. A quick scan, a once over, just as he had done to your squad, and then you're fixated on Price again.
Price who's still talking, saying things Kyle doesn't have the wherewithal to bring himself to care about. Not when he felt so viscerally raw and unbelievably vulnerable in his own damn base at the moment.
He has a few more seconds to compose himself before Price finishes up and all five of the collectivesâ attention is on him, expectant.
And so Kyle plasters on a carefree expression, the corner of his mouth quirked up in a half-smile, and casually nudges Price with a loose fist. A mused, âthanks, Cap'â and such, then he's taking charge.
Voice level and strong, like any typical self-respecting Sergeant, as he turns and urges the group to follow.
The last thing Kyle expects is for you to fall into step beside himâwith the impression of your personality he'd gathered, it shouldn't be a surpriseâ, only lagging a half-step behind, a grin obvious under your mask.
His brain short-circuits, but Kyle quickly recovers, keeping his focus locked straight ahead and decidedly not looking at you. Not for any reason in particular.
âSergeant,â You drawlâand, fuck, it was just a rank, a title, several others held the same one. So why the hell did it feel so different when you said it?
âGot somethinâ on your mind-â Kyle begins casually, as if his heart wasn't doing literal jumping jacks in his ribcage right now. And it takes him a brief moment to remember what he was supposed to call you, wracking his brain for answers, before he finishes with a bland, â0-9?â
God, he hoped that was the right number. There were five of you, all these numbers were going to be a struggle to keep up with.
âOh, none âa that.â You say with a soft chuckle, waving him off. âI know those digits can get a bit confusing. Call me Viper, that's what everyone else calls me anyway.â
Viper? Like a fucking snake? Not that Kyle had any room to judge; not when two of his teammates were a cleaning product and a Hot Topic employee.
Shite, that probably also meant you wanted him to extend the same damn olive branch. Kyle considered himself a pretty social man, he could hold his own in a group, could approach strangers with almost the same confidence he did with friends.
But there was something about you.
And Kyle wasn't sure if it was good or not.
âAâright, Viper,â Kyle doesn't remember swiping his keycard, but he does jump right back into his body when his hand curls around the handle, pulling the door open and letting you in first before letting your comrades struggle with the heavy door after him. Taking his place just that half a step in front of you once more. âThey call me Gaz.â
âThere a story behind that one?â You ask, not a single ounce of hesitation or delay.
âThat depends, there one behind yours?â Kyle quips right back, not missing a beat.
Kyle's ears pick up the tiniest huff you let out, but nothing else. âThat depends,â you mimic. âhow much you wanna know?â
âWhatever you'll give me.â It was easy to lay the charm on thick, but it seemed almost like a competition between you two, as you quickly fired back.
âDesperate, are we, Sergeant?â Kyle could've swore you just, honest to God, purred when you said that. But he must've just been hearing things.
âJust curious.â You had asked first. How had this turned on him?
âMm, think I'll just leave ya guessing.â You muse, closing that half-step distance to just barely brush your arm up against his, and then back to your place again. âIt'll be more fun that way.â
Kyle nearly forgets there's four other people witnessing this conversation right then.
Finally alone again, and having gotten the new squad settled in properly, Kyle takes a moment for himself.
As of right now apparently his fellow sergeant and good âol lieutenant were currently taking a tour around Mexico, and Price was out doing very important Captain-things, so Kyle was entirely on his own.
On his own to deal with whatever the fuck that dumpsterfire of a base tour that had been.
He'd been entirely sidetracked by you the whole time! It didn't make any sense, what did you have that the other soldiers didn't?
You all wore the same uniform, all bore the same random-ass numbers, all were just a bunch of trained killers- there was literally nothing to set you apart!
A lot of people were touchy by nature, especially in professions like this that were built on comradery, Soap certainly was, so there was no reason in the deepest parts of hell for why-
Kyle groans softly to himself, running a hand over his hair before pushing himself up and off his desk chair.
There was no rhyme or reason to it, to why he, in the most cheesy fucking way, honestly felt a goddamn spark when you touched him.
And it wasn't even in the realm of- of intimate. It was a simple brush against him here and there, made perfect sense too! You'd been standing so close the entire time- it was only expected that once and a while you two would graze each other now and again.
He's pacing now, wishing nothing more than to be able to pick up his phone and call the only man who'd be able to help him make sense of all these weird feelings. And also the only man who'd call him daft and his brother in the same sentence.
But he can't do that, so Kyle resigned to simply doing what he should've done in the first place after his furious scrub down in the shower; take a damn nap.
Kyle's first impression of your personality had been wildly off-mark.
If he was going off of how he'd first perceived you last week on the tarmac, he would say that you were easygoing, gave off a more.. laid back energy, maybe even a bit quick-witted.
But his current observations said everything but that.
Kyle had been trying to skirt past all the tired, bleary-eyed soldiers that passed him in the hall without being noticed by the more lively of the bunch; he didn't have the energy for that right now. The last few had nearly flown by him though, wide-eyed and clearly spooked.
Confused, Kyle had brushed it off and continued walking. Sometimes these men were like wild horses, alerted by the smallest mishaps.
Kyle becomes keenly aware of exactly why those last stragglers had appeared so frightened when he turns down the next corner, on his way to the rec room, when he spots you.
Or, more accurately, spots you tearing one of your own soldiers a new one in the empty corridor. The very self-explanatory as to why, isolated corridor.
He gets the gist of it fairly quickly, even as the words flying out of your mouth go in one ear and out the other without a hint of recognition.
The shorter man had obviously fucked something up, and was now hearing it in all the jumbled mix of curses and slang Kyle couldn't even begin to comprehend.
âAn' if I evaâ âear ya sayin' shit like that again I'll âave ya scrapinâ shit out the muck from the break âa dawn ân âtil the damn cows come home, ya hear?â You spit, masked face mere centimeters away from the other's. A gloved hand fisted in 1-5âs, if he remembered correctly, shirt collar, making him have to nearly raise to the toe of his boots in order to not be choked by the fabric.
There's a venomous flare in your eyes when you snap to look at him, a misstep on his part alerting you, and Kyle has never felt more conflicted in his life.
âEverything good here, Viper?â Obviously not, but what else was he supposed to say?
âJust peachy.â You grit out, fingers slowly unfurling from 1-5âs shirt. In turn the poor man is able to lower himself back onto the ground fully, letting out an obvious breath of relief when your hand pulls back completely, falling clenched at your side.
The brave soul who had somehow triggered the brunt of your aggression manages to stand there a little longer until you huff out a gruff, âdismissed.â And send 1-5 on his way.
Though not before barking out a, âAnd be sure âta relay the message âta Pierce!â As the man scurries away, a quick âyes, sir!â choked out over his shoulder.
âAnd if I asked what that was about?â Kyle asks when 1-5 is out of sight, raising a curious eyebrow.
âI'd say it ain't yer business, Garrick.â You snap, still obviously not having gotten the frustration out of your system. Kyle's first instinct is to throw another quip right back at you, extra sarcasm on top like it's sprinkles and he's making a damn sundae, and he almost does, but Kyle quickly slams his mouth back shut before the words escape.
Instead he sighs and relaxes his posture.
âYâlook like shit.â
That seems to put a halt to whatever was rampaging through your head, the rage clearing for a moment to make room for shock first, then confusion.
â..what?â Your clearly puzzled gazeâso expressive, even with the maskâwould be humorous, if not for the truth to Kyle's words.
You did look like shit. Like someone had run a train on youâliterally. A real one; honk honk, rattle rattle and all. Your hair ruffled, matted with some unknown substance and sticking up in every which direction. The black paint around your eyes was smudged away and exposed your true skin tone, well.. kinda. Now with the additional flavor of mud and debris.
Even with the limited access he had to your face, Kyle would say you looked.. tired. Run raggedâmaybe that train wasn't all that metaphorical. Beneath the anger it was clear as day you were just exhausted; you looked nothing like that first day he'd met you, when he had shown you around base.
Hidden grin and playful banter replaced with a stiff posture and veiled limpâyeah, he definitely noticed that part. You weren't the only observant one here.
âI said you look like shit, mate.â Kyle says. His clarification doesn't, well, clear anything up for you, if anything just frustrating you further. Making your eyebrows furrow in a way that's almost cute.
You huff, posture straightening even though Kyle can see the way the new position puts a strain on your worn body- he doesn't mention it. It's not his place.
âThanks.â You reply, voice flat.
âIt was a compliment.â It wasn't.
Deadpan, âreally?â
âMhm.â But Kyle stays firm in his resolve.
âI aim to please.â
âClearly.â And there it is. Kyle can't see it, obviously, but the small twitch of your features, the slightest crinkle at the corner of your eye, tells him he has succeeded. Even if it's not your usual smileânot that he would know what that looked like.
Another puff of air from you, closer to a sigh this time. âDid you need somethin', Gaz?â
The heat is gone, but Kyle can see the way the embers linger; ready to reignite at the first spark.
âHow âbout we take a walk, mh?â He wasn't planning on a walk, really, but Kyle wasn't actively planning against one either. âClear your head a bit?â
You look like you want to brush him off, hesitating like you want to say no and rush off just like your subordinate had. But you don't. â..sure.â
And that's all Kyle needs to tilt his head in the direction he came from before turning around.
Kyle doesn't have to look back to know you've taken your place the position on his left, half a step behind him. Just as you had that first day.
It becomes a sort of.. routine.. after that. And while Kyle hadn't seen much of you that first week, you make an appearance by his sideâalways on the left, always half a step behindâmore often than not.
A little spark of some unidentifiable emotion lighting up in your eyes when you see him. Kyle isn't quite certain what it means, but if it meant he got to see you more often, he was fine with not knowing.
You were.. friends. Or as much as you could be in this situation, one Kyle knew was temporary. Which had the man trying to heed Ghost's advice for once and not get attached; there was no telling when either of you would be shipped out again, never to return.
âGaz!â The sound of your voice is unmistakable when shouted over the noisy chatter of the cafeteria, and Kyle's heart definitely does not do a weird flip when he hears it. Definitely not.
Yeah, so he may or may not be struggling with the whole following Ghost's advice thing. Hey! He said he was trying, not that it was actively working.
âViper.â Kyle greets when you take a seat in front of him. Usually he would have lunch with his dear captain, but Price was even more busy as of lateâand reasonably soâand the lack of that familiar presence was really starting to wear on him. Made the lack of another pair of comrades much more prominent.
âDid you know your bellybutton is actually attached to your bladder-â
You filled in that empty space a little.
âWhat? I thought it was just cut off from everything else?â
Kyle never did find out what had you so down in the dumps, but it wasn't his place to know anyway. Everyone had their secrets.
âNo! There's a lil' line that travels from your bellybutton down to your bladder. That's why it feels so damn weird when touched-â
You were a little spitfire. Reminded him of Soap, kinda. Except Soap didn't flip flop from fiery rage one moment to calm and collected the next, buttery smooth words dripping with innuendo.
And then there was right now, where you shared the strangest little factoids with Kyle.
âAnd don't even get me started on the dormant blood vessel in your liver-â
And that is where Kyle drew the line.
âNope, nope, nope-â Kyle says, waving a fork in your general direction. Amused when you gasp in surprise, as if he's threatening you with something more substantial than this flimsy plastic. âI am eating. I don't wanna hear gross facts about my anatomy.â
âWould you prefer a physical demonstration on anatomy instead?â
And that was the weird innuendos he mentioned before. Sure, Soap and him shared a few playful taunts now and again, occasionally the rest of the team would chime inâand there was whatever the hell Soap and Ghost had going on, but Kyle didn't think those were all jokes. But this felt.. different.
âYou are a menace, you know that?â Kyle huffs, twirling some bland mush around the fear-inspiring fork from before; now that he wasn't actively threatening you with it.
A dramatic gasp, and Kyle doesn't even have to look up to know you look just as dramatized as you sound.
âI am a damn saint, Gaz!â
âRigghhhht, is that what we're calling this?â He does look up this time, and the slight widening of your eyes, the little glimmer of something hiding in those captivating hues, makes him glad he did. Pocketing that adorable priceless look on your face for safekeeping.
âI've got the body, the attitude,â you count with both hands, a finger for each listed item. Gaze on something vaguely to your right as you think. âAnd the charm! That's like- the fuckin' holy trinity. I'm a damn holy temple, I tell ya!â
âSure you are, mate.â Kyle says, a small grin on his face that he couldn't get rid of even if he wanted to. It does make eating a little difficult though.
He tries not to linger on the fact that you never eat in front of him. But you always come to hang out with him anyway.
Things are good between you two, and Kyle feels warm and giddy every time you grace him with your, as you'd once put it, saintly presence. He doesn't ponder much as to the why he feels this way; not that it really matters, this was temporary and you'd be shipped off somewhere else eventually.
That space to his left feels cold when you're not there, empty, and even though he's never worked with you in the field, Kyle finds himself looking back, expecting you to be there when he crawls through tall grass and mud in that suffocating ghillie suit.
It's dumb and Kyle doesn't know why he does it, but he half expects you to chip in a word or two over his shoulder in the midst of his playful banter with Price and Laswell. When he is, once again, pushing through tall grass. Only this time he gets to snipe a few dozen unsuspecting soldiers from hundreds of meters away.
Things are going well, so damn well, almost too good to be true. And it is.
Kyle would have never expected to hear such raw panic in his captain's voice, accustomed to the man's usual gruff and composed behavior. It strikes fear right into Kyle's core, cutting through his chest and piercing directly into the sergeant's heart.
In the beginning, Kyle had been eager to get this over with and fly back to base with the expectation of seeing you again; now that idea was nothing but a passive thought as his mind was clouded with a worry mirroring Price's.
Kyle's entire torso feels like it's been ripped to shreds when they touch down on base again, every step shooting sparks of pain through his nerves and reminding him why he hates heights so damn much. But at least they managed to get Laswell back before anything could go terribly wrong. They had Farah and her soldiers to thank for that.
Wanting nothing more than to soak himself in a tub of scalding hot water, and knowing he'll have to settle for a lukewarm shower instead, then sleep the pain away, Kyle's path is interrupted by the sight of you marching down the corridor.
âGaz! Shit- there you are!â You call when a few paces away from him, a sort of relief obvious in your breathy tone. You come to an abrupt halt right in front of him, blocking Kyle's way and causing him to come to a sudden stop lest he accidentally crash into you.
Your eyes are analytical and Kyle is far too exhausted to decipher the several layers of emotion that flash through your gaze.
In the end you seem to come to some sort of conclusion, stating a flat, âYâlook like shit.â
âYeah,â Kyle huffs out a surprised laugh; the phrase reminiscent of when he'd caught you chewing out one of your soldiers. âFalling out of a helicopter doesn't usually make for a pretty sight.â
âFuckin'- pardon!?â Your eyes go wide, and Kyle would bet your mouth was hanging open right now too. âHow the hell did that even happen?â
Kyle couldn't reveal too much of their little rendezvous in Urzikstan, but he could tell you the gist of it. Namely how the fuck he got tossed out of Nikolai's helicopter like a damn ragdoll.
âWas helping out a friend,â car hopping and trying not to get shot at in the process. âGot a bit tossed around, you know how it is- RPG, couldn't deploy countermeasures in time..â
âLuckily I got the rope latched in time, shit hurt the most when the rope ran out.â Kyle's hip bones ache at the memory, and he knows for certain his body will be one giant bruise in the morning.
âAre- are you okay-?â You stammer, gaze no longer on him and now flicking over his dirtied uniform. Never lingering on one spot.
âI'll bounce back soon eno-â Your hands reach out then, as if wanting to touch him and make sure for yourself. Kyle cuts off mid sentence, eyes widening by a fraction and body going stiff.
As if just realizing what you were doing, your hands pause where they are, hovering awkwardly between the two of you. Your gloves and his own gear serve as a thick barrier between your bodies, but Kyle swears there is an energy buzzing there; an electric static thriving in the air between you both, the tension near suffocating.
âI'm just gonna..â it takes Kyle a second to realize you've fully retracted your hands by now, a stale awkwardness lingering between you two.
Kyle isn't sure whether to feel disappointed or be appalled by how much he wished you had touched him. Between the fluctuating altitudes he'd endured and the full body ache he was currently experiencing, Kyle comes to the conclusion that it must just be the exhaustion finally kicking in. Yes, of course. That is why he was mourning the loss of something that hadn't even happened. There was no other possible reason.
Clearing his throat with a stilted cough, Kyle nods. âY-yeah, definitely. And I should take that shower..â
âOf course, yeah-â Your gaze is downcast now, arms tucked behind your back and Kyle notes the nervous shift of your weight from one foot to the other. âYou- you do that.â
âYeah.â And then Kyle hightails his ass out of there, it's a little awkwardâwho is he kidding, it's beyond awkward. And how many times was he going to say awkward, would any other synonyms suffice? You had been standing in front of him, so Kyle has to do a weird little hop to the side to get around you- which then triggers you into motion. And you step to the side to get out of his way.
Only the direction your subconscious chooses is once again right in his path and Kyle stumbles over his own feet, barely avoiding colliding with you but pulling on his sore muscles in a way that has him digging his teeth into his lip to avoid letting out a sharp yelp.
When Kyle regains his balance, the hallway is empty and you're nowhere to be found. With a deep sigh, and a heavier weight on his shoulders than before, Kyle straightens back up and continues on his way to his initial destination.
There better be some warm water left when he gets there.
As it turned out, falling out of a helicopter and just barely surviving by sheer luck did actually have its drawbacks and one couldn't just walk away with a few scrapes and expect to be a-okay in the olâ nob up top.
For Kyle that meant various scenes playing out in his dreams of what could have happened, not what did. Ranging from him not having clipped the hook onto his gear right, to the rope just snapping in half the minute Kyle reached the end of the line. Even some where he just straight up splat into the back of one of the many trucks that had been flying by. The worst had to be when the helo was hit dead on and Kyle wasn't even given the chance to make things right, bleeding out and dying right then and there in the cabin of Nikolai's helicopter.
Waking up drenched in a cold sweat wasn't anything new to the sergeant, but waking up alone, as of late, was. Usually he was bunked up with Soap, and when not on base, or stationed on another, he was grouped up with other soldiers.
Being forced into the waking world with his heart lodged in his throat and beating so fast it was practically trying to escape, with the aches and bruises that made the nightmares all that more real, and being stuck inside a dark, empty room? Now that just wasn't pleasant at all.
Pushing through the stabbing aches radiating throughout his body, Kyle forces himself to stand, haphazardly throws on an old hoodie and decides right then and there he needs a cup of tea. Extra steamy.
The walk to the common room, and subsequently the kitchenette beyond that, is short and Kyle doesn't have to think about it when he places one foot in front of the other. His legs easily carried him to his destination without the need for any extra brainpower.
Kyle doesn't notice the looming figure in the dark, obscured by shadow in the corner of the rec room, until he's already got a burning hot mug between his hands. Passing back through now that he's got his tea, he's graciously welcomed back by a lamp in the corner flicking on.
He blames the high-pitched squeal that rips from his throat on his exhaustion and not that he'd been spooked by a fucking light of all things.
âViper- shit,â He breathes, the hand not currently cradling the mug flying up to clutch at his heart.
âSorry.â You murmur, sounding a bit sheepish. Your voice is a little deeper than usual and Kyle assumes you must've also woken up recently. He opts to ignore the small flutters that erupt in his stomach at the sound. âCouldn't sleep. Didn't think anyone else would be out âere, wasn't tryna startle ya.â
Kyle moves to wave off your concern, only to wince at the strain it puts on his sore muscles, sucking in a sharp breath between his teeth.
You, ever the observant bastard, immediately zero in on his discomfort, one of your eyebrows quirking upward as you study him.
âAlright?â
Not trusting his voice, Kyle hums a noncommittal sound, and, trying to appear at least a little put together, straightens his posture and steps forward.
But the pain is worse now and he nearly spills his tea, instinctively tightening his grip around the steamy mug.
Fuck, Kyle had known it would hurtâChristâs sake, he had literally fallen out of a damn helicopterâbut he had obviously severely underestimated how bad it would be. Now, he was used to pain, you didn't get very far in this line of work without at the very least some tolerance for the aches and burns.
But this? This was a pain that went from an average sort of soreness in the muscles of his thighs, to sharp stabbing pains in his hips and a near debilitating throbbing ache that spanned over practically his entire torso.
Everything hurts. Laying down hurts. Standing hurts. Sitting hurts. Everything. Unless he stayed completely still, Kyle's entire body felt like one giant bruise. Any little twitch of a muscle sent a stabbing shock straight to his nervous system.
You're on your feet and standing in front of him before Kyle even has a chance to right himself again. When had his breathing become so labored?
There's no hesitation this time around, no awkwardness when your hands shoot out. Grasping his shoulders, your hold gentle yet firm, and stabilizing Kyle where he stood.
Kyle isn't quite sure when it had happened, but the warmth of his mug was gone. Replaced by the heat of your own body from where his hands restedâreally, more or less hanging on for dear life; he'd be ashamed if he had the wherewithal to do soâon your waist. Fingers curled tight, twisted and snagged into the fabric of your shirt.
If Kyle hadn't been so out of it from the sheer amount of pain he was in, he would've noticed your lack of uniform. More dressed down than he'd ever seen youâthough a mask still firmly in place, he would've noticed if it were otherwise.
âDid anyone check you out when you came back?â Kyle has to actively work to zone back in on the rough timber of your voice, his mind sluggish as it works through each word and syllable.
âY- kinda? I wasn't bleeding out or nothing.â
âOh, fuck's sake-â you let out a heavy exhale, and Kyle, though as disorientated as he currently is, can here the unsaid youâre a goddamn idiot clear as day in that singular breath.
âAlright. You're comin' with me.â
âWh- huh?â
âWith me. No questions, Garrick.â You hold no authority over him, if anything, this being his base, and not yours, Kyle had a bit more of a say in matters than you did. And yet, when you release your hold and untangle yourself from his, Kyle follows.
There is nothing stopping you from touching him now. Not since last night.
Kyle can still feel your hands, strong and yet so, so unbelievably delicate, running across his skin. Scouring his abdomen for anything that would clue you in on whether he had internal bleeding or not, pressing down on his bruised rib cage, checking for breaks in the fragile bone.
Thankfully, you find nothing but the bruising painted clearly on his skin, and Kyle can't get the picture, the feel, of your hands brushing over his stomach. Up his sides and down to his hips, further still to his aching thighs. The latter had been over his clothes, but the heat of your palms had been more than enough.
The following day, and practically every waking second now, Kyle's mind and eyes were on you. If he couldn't see you, he was thinking about you. And if he could see you, you were usually at his side. A hand on his shoulder, an elbow nudging his arm.
Kyle now found himself in an odd state of yearning. His body craved your touch in a way it never had for any other's. His heart skipped a couple beats every time he even caught sight of you.
And when you touched him? Shit, Kyle had to hope and pray the blush he could feel warming his cheeks wasn't as visible as it felt.
Kyle wasn't quite sure why he reacted to you the way he did. And, honestly, he wasn't quite sure he wanted to. He was perfectly content not knowingâwas he? Or was he just burying what he didn't want to acknowledge?
He didn't ruminate on the fact that Soap had a tendency to touch him similarlyâbut, shit, it was different, wasn't it?â, and never had Kyle once responded to it the way he did with you.
If Price had noticedâwhich he likely hadn't with what was going on halfway around the globe. Soap and Ghost stuck somewhere in Mexico, and of course the constant planning on what their next move would be. The captain didn't mention it.
If Soap was here, he'd probably call Kyle out on his bullshit. But he wasn't, and Kyle was perfectly alright with continuing to ignore the, definitely one-hundred percent platonic, convoluted emotions he felt towards you.
Things were good; the last thing Kyle wanted was to accidentally rock this delicate sailboat when he currently had unlimited access to your bubbling laugher, sarcastic quips, and crinkling eyes.
A Viper, that's what you were nicknamed after, and, with that fiery attitude of yours, Kyle was starting to understand why.
Voyager rewatch s5 ep20: Juggernaut
I don't know if I'm in any frame of mind to review a Star Trek episode right now, since I'm American, and it's election day, and we may or may not be descending into fascism in the next day or so, which is obviously terrifying. And since I'm in more than one of the groups that are on the fascist chopping block, I am very not okay. I haven't looked at election news yet, since I'm too anxiety-ridden to look before all the votes are in, so bear with me if I get a little upset about this otherwise middling episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Gonna just say that I don't like this one. I hate episodes where they bring up B'Elanna's very understandable anger issues as some sort of terrible thing that's ruining everyone's day, so she should just have to to suck it up and get over it. Miss me with that shit. B'Elanna's actually calmed down a lot over the years, so for them to do a story like this now just feels like punishing women for ever showing a hint of anger. (Meanwhile, everybody is angry with her for being angry, yet somehow them being angry is okay, but her anger isn't. Ok, sure, that makes so much sense! Not!)
While there is merit in the idea of healing from trauma including letting go of your anger to at least some extent, I don't feel like that's what they were going for here. Nobody seemed interested in exploring why she feels the way she does, or finding ways to help her heal by making her feel safe and loved and accepted, they just wanted her to suppress her feelings so they weren't an inconvenience to them, which, in itself, compounds the trauma and makes it worse. So this whole story gets a fail from me, which is too bad, because it could have been pretty effective just as a thriller without all the weird misogyny thrown into it. It's basically Phantom of the Paradise on a Malon garbage scowl, just without the 70s glam rock. (It would have been more fun with some 70s glam rock, honestly.) The whole environmentalist commentary they're doing with the Malons was enough of a story by itself without having to throw in everyone making B'Elanna feel bad about herself. Kudos to Tom, Neelix, and Janeway at least for being supportive of her, but I loathe how they made Tuvok and Chakotay treat her- after almost 5 years together, and more than that in Chakotay's case, they wouldn't be so shitty to her and have so little faith in her. What the hell??
Also, I fail to see why B'Elanna was the only one in a tank top on the Malon ship. Why didn't any of the men take their jackets off for the whole episode? More sexism, methinks! And this is like, what, the second episode where the camera has followed B'Elanna into the bathroom while taking a shower? Eww? I don't care that they only show her back- when was the last time we followed any male characters into the shower and showed even their backs? Never, actually. And it was gratuitous here, since that whole thing about her remembering hitting that guy had nothing to do with her being angry with him, she had to do it to protect an entire sector of space from being irradiated and killing everyone, so why are they making this thing about her feeling guilty about it or whatever? It's very obvious that the guy who wanted to kill eveyone because he was so angry and wanted revenge was supposed to be a cautionary tale about letting your anger run wild, but that's a false equivalency to compare him to B'Elanna. She doesn't ever intentionally cause harm to people when she's angry, and has time and again volunteered to sacrifice herself to help others. She cares far too much about other people to be in danger of doing anything so destructive.
Stories about how harmful the anger of wronged or oppressed people are need to walk a fine line if they don't want to veer into the territory of gaslighting people with legitimate grievances into believing their anger makes them just as bad, or worse, than the people who caused them harm, and don't think this episode walks that line well. It doesn't really seem to have a message other than 'anger is bad', which is an incedibly un-nuanced take that has no usefulness to anyone whatsoever.
Tl;dr: Another episode where B'Elanna gets undeserved crap for being angry, made the worse by being late in the series, when it hasn't even been an issue for a while. No fun, and no useful message or character development. (Tbh I'm surprised but thankful that no one told her to smile more. Good grief.)
When Young Sheldon heads to Caltech, he leaves behind a mother and twin sister in mourning.
Neither Mary nor Missy are in a particularly great place in 1994, when the Big Bang Theory prequel wraps its seven-season run. Mary has thrown herself into her religion (as foretold by Big Bang) and is largely ignoring her childrenâs needs. Missy, meanwhile, is angry at the universe for taking her father.
Now that Georgie, Mandy and CeeCee live across town with Mandyâs parents, and Meemaw lives with Dale, Mary and Missy have the Cooper residence â which, at one point this season, housed seven people â all to themselves, until Mary sells the house at an unspecified point in the future.
Fans of The Big Bang Theory know that Mary and Missy turn out OK⌠but what about all those Young Sheldon fans who have never seen Big Bang â a reasonably large and growing faction of the audience as new generations discover the series on streaming?
youtube
âItâs interesting because we definitely have seen â especially since the show went to Netflix â a younger audience has found it that I donât think is that familiar with Big Bang,â executive producer Steve Holland tells TVLine. âWe were trying to use these last episodes to start [Zoe Perry] on a road towards the Mary [we know] in Big Bang Theory, who we know is even more religious than Mary [in Young Sheldon]. This was the beginning of that path.
âTo me, it doesnât feel like a dark place to leave her. It feels real,â the EP says. âSheâs still grieving the death of George and she has turned to religion. She says âJesus is helping me through it,â and I donât think that thatâs a depressing place to leave her. We donât leave her bouncing back from the death of [her husband], but that also just didnât feel real to us.â
youtube
Holland argues the same is true for Missy. âWe know from Big Bang that she goes off the rails a little bit in the wake of Georgeâs death, so itâs hinting at that future for Missy but also trying not to leave her in such a dark place that itâs just depressing,â he says. âSheâs obviously angry, and sheâs grieving, and that also felt real, but we didnât want to leave her in a really grim place at the end of this showâ â hence Missyâs final interaction with Sheldon before he leaves to start his new life in Pasadena, Calif.
Even still, portrayer Raegan Revord says she feels bad for her character as Young Sheldon comes to an end. âIt breaks my heart,â the 16-year-old tells TVLine. âShe just doesnât have it easy. Her whole life, she was kind of ignored because of her [twin] brother, and the one person who paid her attention died. Sheâs left with a grieving mom who probably [isnât] there for her the way that she should have been because theyâre all dealing with [Georgeâs death] in their own way. Mary very much leans into her religion⌠and in Big Bang, Missyâs a waitress, sheâs got all these kids [and] sheâs the least successful Cooper kid.â
Whether it happens between the events of Young Sheldon and Big Bang, or after the events of Big Bang, Revord hopes that Missy âfinds some peace and happiness.â Could that come in the form of a storyline on CBSâ forthcoming spinoff, Georgie & Mandyâs First Marriage?
âI think, you know, weâve always talked about this new show as this world getting to continue,â Holland says of the Montana Jordan and Emily Osment-led continuation. âItâs important for us that it create its own identity and it isnât just Young Sheldon Season 8 â part of the move to multi-cam is for it to have its own identity â but at the same time, these people are family, and they live in the same town, and it is always our hope that this is a world where theyâre going to pop up, and that these stories will get to continue in some fashion.â
Review Mary and Missy Cooperâs Big Bang Theory futures below, then leave a comment and let us know if youâd like to see Zoe Perry and Raegan Revord reprise their roles on Georgie & Mandyâs First Marriage.
"(...) imagine a figure, half angel, half devil, all human ...
Slouching hopefully towards Tadfield. ... for ever."
Were the authors of Good Omen hinting at someone being Nephilim, then? The Nephilim were said to be half angel and half human, so I don't quite know how that all fits. But someone is slouching hopefully towards Tadfield, it seems.
If you wonder, yes I have reached the phase in my Good Omen- interest where I over-analyze and make wild theories about all kinds of details. Well, I reached that phase a while ago, but it's still going strong. You see, I have a feeling that this quote from the book could mean something. And we know that there still are strange things going on back in Tadfield, because Crowley reads about Tadfield being "the best village in England" with "entirely perfect weather" in his paper (could be an old newapaper, but still, it's interesting). And we know from the ending of season 1 that Adam still has some powers.
Oh, and I just noticed that the whispers Adam heard from the deep of him, right before the big finale, were: "You can make it all better." And: "It's getting closer," and "It's getting stronger."
What's getting closer?
I guess you can really say that music "contains information in a tuneful way!" JJust like flies can contain memories, apparently. I just can't help thinking that it means something that Beelzebub loves "Every day," the song with those same exact words. Still, Gabriel had suggested that they should drop the whole Armageddon thing, and Beelzebub had agreed. So what did it mean?
To be honest, I'm very curious about Gabriel's sudden motivation to drop it all. It came out of the blue, in a way, and it's all very strange. I have no good theories about it yet. All I know is that now, "everything's getting closer," and everything id The Second Coming, I suppose.
I can't wait for season 3.
By the way, here are some other lyrics saying that time has come, and it's about facing the truth, and Beelzebub is there, and there's something about magnifying Jesus Christ (Galileo Figaro, Magnifico), therre's thunderbolt and lightning, and it's Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, of course. One of the few song lyrics that I know by heart, actually:
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy Because I'm easy come, easy go, little high, little low Any 'way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me
Mama, just killed a man Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he's dead Mama, life had just begun But now I've gone and thrown it all away Mama, ooh, didn't mean to make you cry If I'm not back again this time tomorrow Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth Mama, ooh (any way the wind blows) I don't wanna die I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
I see a little silhouetto of a man Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango? Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me (Galileo) Galileo, (Galileo) Galileo, Galileo Figaro, magnifico But I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me He's just a poor boy from a poor family Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Ginny and Georgia: The Art of Subtle Storytelling
As with most everything, I got into Ginny & Georgia well after the train had not only passed but also dropped everyone off as well. I saw clips around all the time but convinced myself it was just a stupid show that didn't deserve the time. Then... I ran into Marcus' depression monologue on YouTube and that was the most relatable thing I'd heard from a TV show. So, I convinced myself to check out that episode (S2E8) to see what was going on with this stupid, cringy teen drama that somehow captured the experience of depression in less than two minutes. Needless to say, watching that episode piqued my interest in so many areas, I soon found myself watching the next episode, and when answers still weren't found, bouncing back to the start of the series. And now... here I am, three 6 days later (after admittedly finishing the series in only 3) still unable to stop thinking about the absolute gem that was Ginny & Georgia.
Obviously there will never be a piece of perfect media and there were certainly parts of the show that had me squeezing my eyes shut in second-hand embarrassment (*cough, cough* tap dancing *cough, cough*)... but there was also something so fundamentally powerful about it that had me continuously choosing "Next Episode" well past midnight. So, as I try to ride out my newfound obsession with this show I couldn't help finding myself wondering "What is it about Ginny & Georgia that is so addicting?" While I think many factors come in to play: the characters, the just wild enough to stretch our suspension of disbelief while also tame enough to be almost realistic plot, and the representation to name a few; but something that really caught my attention was the fact that the show-makers seem to have mastered the art of subtle storytelling.
Show, don't tell, I think is advice most people can attest to hearing at least a handful of times in their lives. It's a phrase so familiar it should be at the front of our minds whenever we set out to tell a story and while not always easy to write, how hard can it be when your form of media relies on visuals as with movies and TV shows? Apparently more of a challenge than you would expect, with many shows turning into bland info dumps rather than containing thoughtful expression of information. Oftentimes this is a cheap way of getting a point across but it creates very dry and unrealistic characters (because for the most part people do not talk by spitting a series of semi-connected essays at one another).
Anyway... I guess what I'm trying to get at is that the creators of Ginny & Georgia did not shy away from show over tell, in fact they thrived off of it. A storyline like Marcus' depression was not a sudden slap-in-the-face episode, explained off by a monologue backstory. Instead the seeds were planted earlier, way earlier, way back in season one when Ellen casually mentioned to Georgia that Marcus' had had a rough year... simple as that. And while we do find out that part of it is due to his friends death, there's still more to the story. Then when season two rolls around, subtle hints are sprinkled throughout the episodes prior to episode eight... Certain facial expressions (specifically noticeable in the Christmas episode), some tighter smiles than normal, some looks that are just a little off. And when the family returns from Vermont: casual conversation between Max and Ginny, picked up and dropped like regular conversation not over focusing on the fact that Marcus lied about how he spent his Christmas. But as an audience we start to pick up on these and when we reach episode eight it all makes sense.
Or another thing I love: Clint. The deaf representation again is thrown in, not as a big deal, just a fact of everyday life. You can believe the twins grew up with a deaf father with how casually they throw around sign language, even sometimes while among themselves. You can believe that Ellen has been married to Clint for a long time and been using sign language to communicate. But not only is the inclusion of sign super casual, something I also picked up on was the twins personalities. Sign language is not just about the hand signs, but full body expression: facial expressions, body language. Someone who has been signing all their life has that tendency towards physical expression, and if you watch any scene with Max it's clear the way she throws her whole body into talking. She has so much energy and her face is always super telling because she grew up with this being a large part of communication with her dad. On the flip side, Marcus is not quite as expressive, but he seems to have a sense for reading other people's body language, like he's used to living in a home where visual communication is more important than auditory communication.
This post focuses a lot on the Bakers because they 100% were my favorite family, but the same can be applied to many situations. Like how Abby's ED isn't super obvious, a few times she leaves for the bathroom and it's not made super obvious that she's leaving to vomit. We get to see glimpses of her struggles, but for the most part we're in the dark, just like most people in her life.
I don't know, maybe I'm just not exposed to the right shows a lot but this one really impressed me. It just felt super obvious how much time and work the cast and crew put into making the characters and storylines believable (well as believable as they can be in a TV show, lol)
So in conclusion... Ginny and Georgia season 3??? And what other gems of shows am I missing out on, lol
having replayed the high keep and the lost child reminded me of the parallels between natty and sebastian as characters. they are both impulsive and pushy about their respective narratives of dealing with the poachers and curing a curse
accidentally wrote a wall of text im sorry
either story deals with mindless approach to revenge as a way of dealing or coping with a trauma under the lights of the bigger, common narrative of Not Everyone Is What They Seem. i want to address that people tend to criticise characters for their handlings of their respective situations.
natty is easier to criticiseâher quests are investigatory in nature. it's relatively simple for me to see the flaws in her arguments and overall reasoning (criminology and scene reading are my minor interests). from the hindsight, i know that archie was kidnapped and that victor hunts down rare treasures, but natty really doesn't have a compelling argument. any sort of investigation requires an amount of evidenceâsome of which must be substantial or present as substantial. you can't just say He Did This; an assessment must be done, everything should be looked at and analysed; running with a single explanation may lead to problems due to misinterpretations and worse, biases. this is the reason a working police unit may take a while to build the case; not everything counts as evidence, something may count for an additional case's evidence, and so on.
aka we cant really say archie's hideout was really ravaged by the ashwindersâthe trail of steps going away from the tent doesn't belong to a running boy. the stark difference between the first chain of trails and the latter hints that archie had been followed until he reached the fork on the road where the pursuit had really ensued. that little detailâto which mc is oblivious somehowâcould've been used to warn mc and natty that a trap could awaited ahead.
my scene reading of the place: the ashwinders came to the empty tent (judging by the muddy prints nearby). if you'd come to this locale early, the tend is already trashed; nothing is taken from it. so, the ashwinders came, then realised the boy wasn't there, and being professional trackers, followed him from behind to the fork. i also tend to think this because archie's satchel doesn't really look as if it had been abandoned; if anything, it looks like it had been carefully placed on the tree. thrown belongings usually land on the groundâand in the game next door, the witchĐľr 3, to empathise the hurry, the belongings are usually scattered about the place.
dont get me wrong, i don't have problems with 15yos being oblivious. they're not trained professionals, and even Trained ProfessionalsTM fail spectacularly as if they went to school only to skip every single class and to part with any common sense.
but i do have problems with the game 1) dumbify a character who is usually aware of their surroundings aka mc isn't as breadloafy 2) not playing around natty's luck by killing off more characters, creating serious problems for her, or mentioning her spying as a gazelle isn't the brightest idea in the scottish highlands.
curiously, the game isn't really unaware of the bias's influence.
when sharp says that rookwood-ranrok alliance is inconceivable, he falls for that bias trap. he has reasons to have that bias, yesâbut as an auror, he can't have it when presented a lead by someone who perhaps knows more. it hints aesop also has a bias against figâwhich isn't really all that enticing. as we know, aesop had a terrible miscalculation once, and he had nearly fallen for that mindset again.
all of this, however, does work for the aforementioned narrative. you see, aside from the game's lousy job, cleverness of natty's reserved for the classroom; out of the class, natty can very well mess up the case by not stopping for a second to think if her thought chain was welded correctlyâor if her entire line of thinking is sound. take the high keep quest: you have an entire hogsmeade worth of evidence, local shopkeepers know the names of loyalists and ashwinders on the trade routes, but a piece of private correspondence will prove that harlow and rookwood are working togetherâso hear me out: that we know rookwood does illegal shit doesn't mean the legal code of the wizarding britain agrees with us or our ethics whatsoever, let alone it may count beasts as objects, therefore, to have legal action against rookwood, natty needs very substantial claims that may concern extortion, robbery, or breaching the statute of secrecy by smuggling illegal goods in and out of the country risking being seen by the muggles.
going back at aesop, he dealt in illegal trade. he was injured on the ship, and his partner died that day. poachers did risk being seenâso did the auror office by dispatching aurors to the site. then, we have a certain dinah hecat taken an entire ring in eastern wales. second half of the 1800s was an era of fast urban and rural development alike, people moved around lots, so the probability of something like that being spotted by the muggles was rather high. that being said, natty's letter argument was rather weakâthere were more substantial claims and evidence left to be gathered than risking everything for a letter; it isnt to say they should had come, that quest was made to unlock highwing as a flying mount but still.
sebastian, at the other hand, has the narrative problems all the same.
a lot has been said about his obsessions, but my take on him is perhaps one of the most harsh: he doesn't have a fundamental understanding of how curses workânor the game does a good job explaining if the lack of care for anne was the consequence of the current political climate.
if sebastian mentioned the wanded goblin to the healers, well. we already have sharpâa former but a well-respected, experienced aurorâwho'd say that is an inconceivable idea as well; its implications are also play into ranrok's favour a tad too much for his liking i imagine.
sebastian's claim is weak and unsupported, he has nothing to back it up with besides his detest for the goblinkind, which seems to fuel his every further claim. not to mention sebastian insists on his vision of events being the most truthful; he doesn't take in other opinions very well unless you had proven him wrong with something substantial.
by the end of the game we do not even know if the wand cast had taken place or not at all because rookwood saying something at the scene does not mean he casted the spell. it is what mc had assumedâas they are prone to do (for example, after coming back from the book's memories, mc skipped the part of only percival and isidora being wyrds in their recollection; instead, they claimed all keepers wielded ancient magicâwhich, again, wasn't true).
so you see the picture: we have a an unstoppable locomotive of thoughts that will crush your every bone because he thinks he is right and correct and has all the moral high horses to think and act the way he doesâbut dare you disagree or criticise or attempt to stop him for a short while, unless you have groundbreaking evidence for your own objection, you will be spoken to in insults and condescending attitudes.
the game doesn't attempt at presenting sebastian with the most shattering challenge on his journey to despair: his supposed friends' regrets, disagreements, arguments and in the end, rejection. his story also doesn't align well with the narrative: from the very first day, sebastian constantly hooks mc's curiosity and says he agreed to keep them company because it'd mean no detention or that he'd gain something from their acquaintanceship. he gets under the skin quite soon into the plot to consider him not being not who he really is: his uncle's nephew, a sprout of a vine that perhaps looks pretty but will tear down the wall that houses it. danger is immanent within him; there is no expectation play, only the depth meter for his detest. [*]
in contrast to natty, i'd say it works though. if we add poppy to the revenge show, you'll have three ways of how such a strong ideation can work out or be tackled, a triptych of sorts.
within the main narrative though, sebastian's story is not so much.
[*] â I must add: his plotline in terms of depicting what abuse can do to people in terms of screwing up their minds and perceptions and moods is done alright. Sebastian is weak and helpless, and he knows it, and it angers him to no endâand I'd call his story an utter fairy tale if he wouldn't act out so violently after hitting the Solomon's walls. It isn't Sebastian being fifteen and throwing a fit; it's Sebastian looking at his world shattering before his eyes and receiving only the most cruel answers: to keep together a wound burst open and splattering blood around without anybody's help and that it's his business not to dieâvery family much support, isn't it. By the time he casts Imperio, he crosses the last point of no return. I might get very personal going forward; I've seen and experienced lots of anger and hate in life to take any downplays or justifications of Sebastian's urges and actions. So I end this addition here.
Journal March 4, 2023
So I just had an interesting conversation. I talked with my roommate little bit more about my sexual history, and a bit more bluntly about her plans and desires.
She doesn't expect to marry me until she's 40. She wants to have her first time with someone else. â She doesn't want to have an emotional connection with the first person she has sex with. â I feel like I should feel more hurt by that. I only went exploring to other people because I was with a partner who was so un-interested in exploring with me. I was with a partner who was so uninterested in giving me what I wanted, when I was unable to give them what they wanted it all, because I was so new to it. As a part of me that feels so angry. I just want to hit something, and act out and rage â and I don't even understand it. I'm not angry at her. Mostly she wants to be in better physical condition â also take better care of herself. Be in more consistently better health. Taking care of yourself physically is a skill. One that our society really doesn't teach, and it something that does take practice.
I paid for the privilege of feeling like meat. Because then at least some part of me was wanted. I think deep down I feel hurt, and rejected â or at least I feel like I should feel like I'm rejected. â It all feels very muddy. And modeled, and soupy. On some level, I feel like perhaps I need to be in better physical condition to give her what she needs. And maybe she feels like she needs to, or wants to be in better physical condition to give me what I need. I don't know. She said she feels so nervous, and it's so difficult â to be naked with another person is a really big hurdle. And she wants to deal with that with someone that she has no emotional attachment to.
It's true, as a man I did not receive the same kind of pressure regarding my virginity. But I did get taught that it was something special that should not be thrown away. And that emotional attachment and the mutuality of desire, is incredibly significant.
The first time I got something asked I wasn't looking for it. I was a drug addict looking for a fix, and the person who I was getting that fixed from â I made them so excited that they gave it to me anyway, without upping the price. That wasn't what I was looking for. After that I started looking for it a lot more. And a lot of my self-worth, and how I saw myself, and a lot of my value to other people got tied up in it. And I feel very torn â
I feel very torn that she would rather have that experience entirely absent of emotional experience, when that only happens to me because I was with a partner who refused to give me any emotional connection and that. When the emotional connection was what I was looking for â I was so desperate for approval, or anyone showing interest that I literally tried to give it to the first person to show any.
Now, there is the thought in the back of my mind that I need to outshine whoever she picks for when she does choose â when she does decide to choose me.
We did cuddle a bit today, that was nice. Will be doing that more as I give her massages to help treat her body.
I was in, a supposedly, I want to say committed relationship except it wasn't. I was in a relationship that was supposed to have emotional intimacy. I felt so desperate to move in that community, that I wanted to throw my sexual â experience, everything â with the first person who showed even the slightest hint of interest.
I was in a relationship with someone who was so uninterested, so unenthusiastic â I threw everything I had it is feet â and he didn't want it. I threw everything, and he didn't want any of it, accept the way I made his body feel because he didn't want to have anything to do with my body or giving anything to me to my body. Despite everything I valued the emotional connection of what was supposed to be there, for sex and touch and play. And I tried to bring that, and insist on that, but we never had that and he never developed it. And the dissonance of having someone want my body but not want me with the pressure of giving touch every day and not receiving any with the line of work I was in â it made me desperate. It made me want to go anywhere, with anyone who would give me some semblance of what I hoped it could be. So I paid for the privilege of feeling like meat.
I paid money to's to emotionally field privilege of being elevated to feel like pounding meat. Because that's why I hated one night stands, I felt, in college the very few one night stands I had had made me feel like I was only meat, it made me feel like sex was only pounding meat. And here I was paying money for the privilege to be elevated to feel like meat. Because that's what my butt boyfriend made me feel like. He made me feel like less than meat as though my ability to give pleasure with my body was the only value I had, because I felt like that was the only thing he ever came by for â because that's the only connection we had. And even then he was on he grew uninterested.
She said it's because of how she feels about her own body. I can understand that. I wish I didn't but I do. I want to feel angrier than I do at this moment. I don't know if I feel numb, or disappointed, or upset, I don't know how I feel. I don't know how I'm supposed to feel. I think I also feel sad. â And a bit lonely at this moment. I feel like I should feel unwanted, but I don't. â I hear her saying âI'm not ready yet" and "it's not time yet". I know I'm certainly not yet ready. I want to be. I think she's thinking another five or six years. In order to get to where she is comfortable with that.
That will give me a lot of time to prepare, get in good, and prime condition. I was thinking before that slow and steady has always been the way for me. As much as I want things to be fast, and quick. Slow and steady and methodical has always been the only way that works for me. Any shortcut always backfires. Spectacularly.
***
It only now, hours later, occurs to me: I think she confirmed that she wants, or expects to be married to me by the time she is 40.
That conversation hurt very deeply. But I forgive her. I will continue to work on doing that. I know I invited God into this emotional mess, this part of my heart. I know that he wants me, that he pursues me.
This I think I understand a small portion of Christ's eagerness for his bride. Having some sense that the wedding feast is coming, and yet not knowing when.
Wei Wuxianâs Position in the Jiang Household
Fandom tends to mischaracterise Wei Wuxianâs position in the Jiang family greatly. A lot of people project more modern ideas about adoption onto his relationship with the Jiang siblings, and write as if he really is their sibling and only Yu Ziyuanâs abusive nature gets in the way of their bond.
This strikes me as a bit misguided. While adoption was practised in ancient China, it was mainly for the purpose of obtaining a male heir in the absence of one, or obtaining more daughters to marry off for alliances. Jiang Fengmian had no reason to adopt Wei Wuxian into the main family, and he didnât. Wei Wuxianâs position in the household is far more nebulous than that, and honestly itâs hard to find an exact corollary, in Chinese history or in any culture, precisely because it was so messy and ill-defined.
A Companion to Upper Class Children
Wei Wuxian is the son of a servant of Yunmeng Jiang; itâs notable that Wei Changze is always referred to this way, rather than as a disciple. Wei Changze wound up leaving the sect in order to marry Cangse Sanren, and Jiang Fengmian considered them dear enough friends that when he heard they passed away, he spent years searching for their orphaned son. He wound up finding Wei Wuxian on the streets of Yiling and brought him home as his ward.
Wei WuXian was taken home by Jiang FengMian when he was nine.
Most memories from back then were already blurred. Yet, Jin Lingâs mother, Jiang YanLi, remembered all of them, and even told him quite a few.
She said that, after his father heard of the news that his parents both died in battle, he had always dedicated himself to finding the child that these past friends had left behind. After searching for a while, he finally found the child in Yiling.
(Chapter 24, Exiled Rebels translation)
Itâs clear from the start that beyond this sense of obligation to his old friends, Jiang Fengmian also had a role set out for Wei Wuxian: he wanted him to be a companion to his children, and Jiang Cheng in particular.
He encourages a friendship between them, insisting on a sleepover between the two a week into Wei Wuxianâs stay.
On the second day, Jiang Chengâs puppies were given to someone else.
This angered Jiang Cheng so much that he threw a big tantrum. No matter how much Jiang FengMian comforted him gently, telling him that they should âbe good friendsâ, he refused to talk to Wei WuXian. Quite a few days later, Jiang Chengâs attitude softened. Jiang FengMian wanted to strike while the iron was still hot, so he told Wei WuXian to sleep in the same room as him, hoping that theyâd grow fonder of each other.
[...]
That night, Jiang Cheng locked Wei WuXian outside his room, refusing to let him in.
[...]
Wei WuXian waited outside for a long time. When the door opened, before the joy could spread onto his face, he was bombarded with a pile of things being thrown out. The door banged shut again.
Jiang Cheng told him from inside, âGo sleep somewhere else! This is my room! Youâre even gonna steal my room?!â
[...]
Standing outside, as Wei WuXian heard that dogs would come bite him, fear immediately bubbled within him. Twisting his fingers, he hurried, âIâll go, Iâll go. Donât call the dogs!â
Dragging behind him the sheets and blanket that were thrown outside, he ran out the hall. Having only arrived at Lotus Pier for a short period of time, he didnât dare jump around yet. Every day, he obediently holed up in the places that Jiang FengMian told him to stay at. He didnât even know where his room was, much less have the courage to knock on other peopleâs doors, scared that itâd disturb someoneâs dreams.
(Chapter 71, Exiled Rebels translation)
After Jiang Cheng is worried about getting in trouble, he goes to Jiang Yanli for help, and she searches for Wei Wuxian.
But this was the first pair of shoes that Jiang FengMian bought him. Wei WuXian was too embarrassed to make him go out of his way to buy another pair, and so he said that they werenât too big. Jiang YanLi helped him into his shoe and pressed the hollow tip, âIt is a bit big. Iâll fix it for you when we get back.â
Hearing this, Wei WuXian felt somewhat uneasy, as if he did something wrong again.
Living in other peopleâs homes, the worst that could happen was to make trouble for the hosts.
Jiang YanLi put him onto her back and began to walk back, wobbling in her steps as she spoke, âA-Ying, no matter what A-Cheng said to you, donât bother about him. He doesnât have a good temper, so heâs always home playing with himself. Those puppies were his favorites. Dad sent them away, and so heâs feeling upset. Heâs actually really happy that somebodyâs here to be with him.â
(Chapter 71, Exiled Rebels translation)
Later, Wei Wuxian offers to cover for him, saying simply that he ran outside by himself because he was scared. In this one case it feels like a genuine instance of children showing solidarity and covering for each otherâs little misbehaviours. But it also follows a pattern of Wei Wuxian doing this and making excuses, time and time again, for Jiang Cheng. I wonder if on some level, he already knew that his role in the household was in part to be a companion-servant to Jiang Cheng.
Wei Wuxian normally never puts up with people treating him poorly or being arrogant; he constantly bites his tongue when Jiang Cheng does so around him. While they study at Cloud Recesses, Jiang Cheng frequently insults Wei Wuxian, who always just smiles and laughs it off.
Jiang Cheng humphed, âHim? He wakes at nine in the morning and sleeps at one during the night. When he wakes up, he doesnât practice his sword or meditate; he goes boating, swims around, picks lotus seedpods, and hunts for pheasants.â
Wei WuXian replied, âNo matter how much pheasants I hunt, Iâm still number one.â
(Chapter 13, Exiled Rebels translation)
Jiang Cheng scolded with a darkened expression, âWhat are you proud of?! What is there to be proud of with this?! Do you think that itâs a glorious thing to be told by someone to get lost? You bring so much shame upon our sect!â
(Chapter 16, Exiled Rebels translation)
We never see Wei Wuxian excusing this sort of behaviour from any other character; he has no problem scolding Jin Ling for his arrogant attitude and telling him that he shouldnât be imitating his uncle, after all! Itâs only where Jiang Cheng is concerned that he does this, and honestly, even then he seems to be quite aware that Jiang Chengâs behaviour is wrong; he simply accepts on some level that itâs his role in the household to put up with it.
He actually does, very gently, try to guide Jiang Cheng at times. In Lotus Seed Pods, for example, he tries to give Jiang Cheng advice on how to flirt with some of the maidens in Yunmeng and make friends:
Wei WuXian threw the seed pods toward the shore. It was a far distance, but they landed lightly in the womenâs hands. He grabbed a few more and stuffed them into Jiang Chengâs arms, shoving, âWhat are you doing, just standing there? Hurry up.â
After a few shoves, Jiang Cheng could only accept them, âHurry up and do what?â
Wei WuXian, âYou ate the watermelon too, so you also have to return the gift, donât you? Here, here, donât be embarrassed. Start throwing, start throwing.â
Jiang Cheng snorted again, âYou must be joking. Whatâs there to be embarrassed about?â Whatever he said, however, even after all of the shidi began to throw seed pods, he still didnât start to move. Wei WuXian urged, âThen throw some! If you throw some this time, next time you can ask them if the seed pods tasted good, and youâll be able to make conversation again!â
[...]
Jiang Cheng was just about to throw one when he realized how shameless it was the moment he heard it. He peeled a seed pod and ate it by himself.
[...]
After a while of laughter, he turned around and looked at Jiang Cheng, who was sitting at the front of the boat eating seed pods with a long face. His smile gradually disappeared as he sighed, âWell, what an unteachable child.â
Jiang Cheng fumed, âSo what if I want to eat alone?â
Wei WuXian, âLook at you, Jiang Cheng. Nevermind. Youâre hopeless. Just wait to eat alone your whole life!â
(Chapter 125, Lotus Seed Pod, Exiled Rebels translation)
He even sighs rather disappointedly when Jiang Cheng refuses to take the hint; he knows that Jiang Chengâs sullen behaviour is going to make him miserable down the line, but all of his gentle efforts to nudge him in a better direction have failed.
He also speaks with great awareness of Jiang Chengâs flaws after the fight in the ancestral hall:
Wei WuXian reached out with one hand and massaged his chest, as if trying to break up the pent-up feeling inside his heart. A moment later, he blurted, âI knew Jiang Cheng wouldnât have let us go so easily. That brat⌠How could this be?!â
[...]
Wei WuXianâs eyelids throbbed, âEvery one of them. The bratâs been like this ever since he was young.Heâll say anything when heâs angry, no matter how bad it is. He gives up on all grace and discipline whatsoever. As long as itâd annoy whomever heâs against, heâd say it no matter what terrible insults he uses. After all these years, he hasnât gotten better at all. Please donât take it to heart.â
(Chapter 90, Exiled Rebels translation)
This is so interesting to me, because it really makes it clear that Wei Wuxian has always been aware of these flaws of Jiang Chengâs. He hasnât been viewing him through rose-coloured lenses or making excuses for him because heâs âfamilyâ. He puts up with Jiang Chengâs behaviour because being his companion is one of his duties in the Jiang household. It may never have been directly stated, but there seems to be some unspoken understanding to this effect.
I honestly donât know if there is any official role in history (in any culture, not just China) which perfectly correlates to this. In China a ladyâs maid was expected to also be a close friend and companion to her mistress (in canon, see Bicao to Qin-furen and Yinzhu and Jinzhu to Yu-furen). In Europe an upper class woman would hire a ladyâs companion, a woman from the lower fringes of the gentry who would serve as her companion in exchange for financial support.
I donât know of any version of this role which involves two men. In general, this sort of role existed because upper class women were confined to the household by and large, and had very limited social spheres. Men, meanwhile, had much greater ability to meet with their peers and make friends. I almost feel like Wei Wuxian wound up being shoved into this role simply because even as a child Jiang Cheng was so unsociable that Jiang Fengmian didnât know what else to do!
Wei Wuxian also at least once steps in and starts a fight in place of Jiang Cheng (essentially taking the fall for him). He does this when Jin Zixuan speaks disparagingly of Jiang Yanli at Cloud Recesses:
Jin ZiXuan asked in reply, âWhy donât you ask me how on Earth can I be satisfied with her?â
Jiang Cheng instantly stood up.
Pushing him to the side, Wei WuXian walked in front of him and sneered, âYou sure think that youâre pretty satisfying, donât you? Where did you get the guts to be all choosy here?â
[...]
Wei WuXian sighed, â⌠Itâd be nice if shijie came. Itâs fortunate that you didnât hit him.â
Jiang Cheng, âI was going to. If you didnât push me, the other side of Jin ZiXuanâs face would also be ruined.â
(Chapter 18, Exiled Rebels translation)
Itâs also very notable that Wei Wuxian is never shown having friends outside of Jiang Chengâs social circle, despite what an outgoing and friendly person he is. Any time he expresses interest in someone for himself, as with Lan Wangji, Jiang Cheng tries to nip it in the bud. Being unable to deter Wei Wuxian from Lan Wangji directly, Jiang Cheng instead tries to drive a wedge between them, constantly telling Wei Wuxian that Lan Wangji hates him.
âYeah,â Nie HuaiSang spoke, âIt looks like he really hates you, Wei-xiong. Lan WangJi usually⌠No, he never does something so impolite.â
Wei WuXian, âHe hates me already? I wanted to apologize to him.â
Jiang Cheng sneered, âApologizing now? Too late! Like his uncle, he surely thinks that you are evil and unruly to the core, and didnât bother to pay you any attention.â
(Chapter 14, Exiled Rebels translation)
Jiang Cheng pulled him even closer, âItâs not as if youâre familiar with him! Donât you see how much he hates you? Youâre going to carry him? He probably doesnât even want you a step closer to him.â
(Chapter 52, Exiled Rebels translation)
He even directly orders Wei Wuxian not to invite Lan Wangji to come visit him at Lotus Pier during the Lotus Seed Pod extra.
Wei WuXian, âWhy are you so upset? My watermelon almost flew away! I was just being polite. Of course he wouldnât come. Have you ever heard of him go anywhere by himself to have fun?â
Jiang Cheng had on a stern expression, âLetâs make this clear. I donât want him to come, anyhow. Donât invite him.â
(Chapter 125, Lotus Seed Pod, Exiled Rebels translation)
Itâs not only Lan Wangji he tries to steer Wei Wuxian away from; he also interrupts his conversation with Wen Ning at the archery competition:
Wen QiongLin was probably one of Wen Clanâs disciples furthest in bloodline. His status was neither high nor low, yet his personality was timid. He didnât dare do anything and even his speech stuttered. Through much practice, he had finally conjured up the courage to enter the competition, but he blew it because he was too nervous. If he didnât receive the right guidance, perhaps the boy would hide his true self more and more from now on and never dare to perform in front of other people again. Wei WuXian encouraged him a couple of times and touched on a few areas of growth, correcting some miniscule problems that he had when he was shooting in the garden. Wen QiongLin listened so attentively that he didnât even turn his eyes away, nodding uncontrollably.
Jiang Cheng, âWhere did you find so much nonsense? The competition is starting soon. Get into the arena right now!â
Wei WuXian spoke to Wen QiongLin in a serious tone, âIâll be off to the competition now. Later, you can see how I shoot when Iâm in the arenaâŚâ
Jiang Cheng dragged him away, short of patience. He spat as he dragged, âSee how you shoot? Do you think that youâre a model or something?!â
(Chapter 59, Exiled Rebels translation)
Even when it comes to Wei Wuxianâs friendly flirtation with Mianmian, Jiang Cheng has something to say and tries to deter him from her:
Jiang Cheng, âThe one that MianMian gave you? I didnât.â
Wei WuXian exclaimed his regret, âIâll find her for another one later.â
Jiang Cheng frowned, âYouâre at it again. You donât really like her, do you? The girl does look fine, but itâs obvious that she doesnât have much background. Maybe she isnât even a disciple. She seems like the daughter of a servant.â
Wei WuXian, âWhatâs wrong with servants? Iâm also the son of a servant, arenât I?â
Jiang Cheng, âHow can you compare to her? Whose servant is like you, having your master peel lotus seeds for you and boil you soup. I didnât even get to have some!â
(Chapter 56, Exiled Rebels translation)
Jiang Cheng really does seem to view Wei Wuxian in a very proprietary light; heâs not allowed to have any friendships which donât exist under Jiang Chengâs direct control.
The idea that Wei Wuxian was meant to be Jiang Chengâs servant-friend is reinforced at its darkest when Lotus Pier falls: both Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmianâs last words to Wei Wuxian are an instruction to protect Jiang Cheng.
One hand holding him, Madam Yu grabbed Wei WuXianâs lapels with her other hand as though to strangle him to death. She spoke through clenched teeth, â⌠You damn little brat! I hate you! I hate you more than anything else! Look at what our sect has gone through for your sake!â
[...]
Madam Yu, âDonât make such a fuss. Itâll loosen up when youâre somewhere safe. If anyone attacks you on the journey, itâll protect you as well. Donât come back. Go to Meishan straight away and find your sister!â
After she finished, she turned to Wei WuXian and pointed at him, âWei Ying! Listen to me! Protect Jiang Cheng, protect him even if you die, do you understand?!â
[...]
Jiang FengMian stared into his eyes. Suddenly, he reached out. Only after pausing in the air did he finally touch Jiang Chengâs head, slowly, âA-Cheng, be well.â
Wei WuXian, âUncle Jiang, if anything happens to you, he wonât be well.â
Jiang FengMian turned his eyes to him, âA-Ying, A-Cheng⌠you must look after him.â
(Chapter 58, Exiled Rebels translation)
Even Jiang Fengmian, who supposedly favoured Wei Wuxian, only gives him instructions as pertains to his own son; he doesnât spare a single last word for Wei Wuxian himself.
A Lower Status Family Member
It wasnât uncommon throughout human history, across many cultures, for wealthy families to take in relatives who were orphaned or had otherwise fallen on hard times. They tended to have a lower status than the main family; they lived with them and were still a part of their social sphere, but were not quite equal, either. The English term for this is âpoor relationâ.
Obviously, Wei Wuxian isnât actually a blood relative at all. But his position in the Jiang household definitely has some similarities. He lives in the main house, eats meals with the family, attends school with the son... He is even on some conditional levels accepted into the gentry of cultivation society. But he isnât a full equal member of the family, either.
The fact that heâs Jiang Fengmianâs ward, not a blood relative or adopted into the main family, puts him at even more of a disadvantage. It seems that Jiang Fengmian paid for all of Wei Wuxianâs expenses:
Wei WuXian took a bite, âBack then, I didnât even have to pay when I ate at the dock. I grabbed whatever I wanted, ate whatever I wanted; ran after I grabbed, walked as I ate. A month later, the vendor would get the reimbursement from Uncle Jiang.â
(Chapter 86, Exiled Rebels translation)
While this is a bit of conjecture, I gather that he was given access to family money as if he was part of the clan, and could just charge Yunmeng Jiang whenever he shopped in Lotus Pier. Which is great so long as Wei Wuxian is accepted in Yunmeng Jiang...but as we see during the Burial Mounds settlement period, the moment that acceptance fades, Wei Wuxian is left out in the cold without a single coin. And because he isnât a member of the family, itâs a far easier matter for him to be thrown aside, as he was when Jiang Cheng grew angry with him over his decision to protect the Wens.
Of course, Chinese families traditionally did share their wealth, and still do nowadays. Ideally, in a loving family, this is a positive and means they all support each other; but when that isnât the case, it leaves the victims of abuse vulnerable.
In Wei Wuxianâs case, he has some of the benefits of being a member of the Jiang clan, without ever actually being a member. He can be cast aside at any time, and he is never afforded the same respect by wider cultivation society which an inner clan member would have.
I donât believe the novel ever directly addresses Wei Wuxianâs acceptance into the guest lectures at Cloud Recesses in this light, but the donghua actually has a very interesting little exchange about it which takes place between Nie Huaisang and a relative of his:
âWei-xiong is just a disciple from Yunmeng. Why could he come to Gusu to study?â
âWei-xiong is the son of Jiang-zongzhuâs old friend. He has been treated as their own son.â
âOh, I see. That explains why they donât look like master and servant, they seem like brothers.â
(MDZS Donghua, Episode 3, Guodong Subs)
Wei Wuxian was only allowed to attend these lectures, which seem to mainly be for sect heirs and inner clan members, on the grace of being Jiang Fengmianâs ward (and probably to accompany Jiang Cheng). While this exchange is not from the book, we never do see or hear about any of the other students being outer disciples rather than members of the main clan. Hereâs what the novel had to say about it:
In that year, aside from the YunmengJiang Sect, there were also the young masters from other clans, sent to study here from parents who heard of the reputation. The young masters were all around fifteen or sixteen. Because the sects all knew the others, although they werenât close, they had seen othersâ faces before. It was widely known that, although Wei WuXianâs surname was not Jiang, he was the leading disciple of the sect leader of the YunmengJiang SectâJiang FengMian, and also the son of his friend who had passed away. In fact, the sect leader regarded him as his own child. This, along with how youths were not as concerned with status and ancestry as elders, they were soon friends. Only a few sentences passed, and everyone started to call others older brothers or younger brothers.
(Chapter 13, Exiled Rebels translation)
And Wei Wuxian isnât treated as an equal at school, either; when he and his friends get up to mischief, heâs frequently the only one punished. Nie Huaisang even notes that Lan Qiren seems to be far harder on him than the other students:
Nie HuaiSang spoke, âWhy does it seem like old man Lan is especially strict towards you? He always directs his scoldings at you.â
(Chapter 14, Exiled Rebels translation)
And we see Wei Wuxian being the sole one punished out of a group taken for granted by his friends multiple times:
As a result of cheating notes flying everywhere in the air, Lan WangJi suddenly attacked during the test, and caught a few initiators of the commotion. Lan QiRen exploded with anger, writing letters to the prominent clans to tell on them. He loathed Wei WuXianâin the beginning, although these disciples could hardly sit still, at least nobody started anything, and their buttocks were able to stick to their legs. However, now that Wei Ying came, the originally spineless brats were influenced by his encouragement, venturing out at night and drinking alcohol however they pleased. The unhealthy practices grew greater and greater. As he had expected, Wei Ying was one of the biggest threats to humanity!
Jiang FengMian replied, âYing has always been like this. Please take care to discipline him, Mr. Lan.â
And so, Wei WuXian was punished again.
(Chapter 14, Exiled Rebels translation)
The boys were all cheating, but Wei Wuxian is the one punished most severely. This happens when he's caught sneaking alcohol, too (though to be fair to Lan Wangji, he probably was only punishing him, and himself alongside him, for being outside after curfew when he threw them off the wall).
Of course, Jiang Cheng didnât dare to say that Wei WuXian was at fault. Thinking back, it was them who urged Wei WuXian to buy liquor. Each and every one of them should have been punished. He could only speak in a vague way, âItâs fine, itâs fine; itâs not that serious! He can walk. Wei WuXian, why are you still up there?!â
(Chapter 18, Exiled Rebels translation)
Itâs not entirely unreasonable for the one who gets caught to take the punishment (whatâs he going to do, rat his friends out?) but their ready acceptance of this does fit into a pattern.
Jiang Chengâs top was tied at his waist. Hearing his motherâs chastise, he hastily put it over his head. Madam Yu scolded again, âAnd you boys! Canât you see that A-Liâs here? Who taught you brats to dress like this in front of a girl!?â
Of course, it was needless to think who led the group. Thus, Madam Yuâs next sentence, as usual, was âWei Ying! Do you want to die!?â
[...]
He could still feel some pain in his back, so he tossed the paddles to someone else, sat down, and felt the stinging piece of flesh, âHow unfair. Nobody else was wearing anything, but why was I the only one who got scolded and beaten up?â
Jiang Cheng, âBecause you hurt the eye the most with no clothes on, for sure.â
[...]
Everyone nodded. Wei WuXian, âThanks for the praise, you guys. Iâm even starting to feel some goose bumps.â
The shidi, âYouâre welcome, Da-Shixiong. You protect us every single time. You deserve even more!â
(Chapter 125, Lotus Seed Pod, Exiled Rebels translation)
While we know that Yu Ziyuan is an abusive person in general, she abuses Wei Wuxian far more harshly than anyone else, even the outer disciples. Itâs made clear to us in Lotus Seed Pods that she whips him regularly over minor infractions:
Madam Yu was even angrier, âHow dare you run! Come back right now and kneel!â As she spoke, she let loose her whip with a flip of her wrist. Wei WuXian felt a searing pain slash across his back. He loudly exclaimed, âOw!â And almost tripped on the ground.
(Chapter 125, Lotus Seed Pod, Exiled Rebels translation)
And that his back is heavily scarred from it:
He felt his back, covered in scars both old and new, and still couldnât hold back the question heâd be thinking about, âHow awfully unfair. Why is it that Iâm the only one who gets beaten up, whenever something happens?â
(Chapter 125, Lotus Seed Pod, Exiled Rebels translation)
Rumours about this even made it outside of Lotus Pier; during their visit to the ancestral hall years later, Lan Wangji even states that he heard about some of it:
Lan WangJi had on an expression of understanding, âKneeling as punishment?â
Wei WuXian mused, âHow did you know? Thatâs right. Madam Yu punished me almost every day.â
Lan WangJi nodded, âI have heard of a few things.â
Wei WuXian, âItâs so famous that even people outside Yunmeng, even you Gusu people knowâhow could it be âa few thingsâ? But, to be honest, in all these years, Iâve never seen a second woman whose temper was as bad as Madam Yuâs. She told me to go to the ancestral hall and kneel no matter how small the matter was. HahahaâŚâ
(Chapter 87, Exiled Rebels translation)
Wei Wuxianâs lower social standing is definitely a part of why Yu Ziyuan is able to abuse him so terribly and receive little to no censure for it. Everyone at Lotus Pier simply takes it for granted, with the exception of Jiang Yanli who at least does try to deflect her mother when she is angry with Wei Wuxian:
Yet, all of a sudden, someoneâs quiet voice drifted by Madam Yuâs ear, âMom, do you want to eat some watermelonâŚâ
[...]
Jiang YanLi almost cried from her motherâs pinching, mumbling, âMom, A-Xian and the others were hiding here to relieve the heat and I came here on my own. Donât blame them⌠Do⌠Do you want some watermelon⌠I donât know who gave them to us, but itâs really sweet. Eating watermelon in the summer is great for cooling down and quenching thirst. Iâll cut them for youâŚâ
(Chapter 125, Lotus Seed Pod, Exiled Rebels translation)
She both tries to deflect her mother from her anger, and also outright states that Wei Wuxian and the other boys werenât at fault. Jiang Yanli seems to be the only one at Lotus Pier who ever does this.
After the war, Wei Wuxian attends social events at Jiang Chengâs side but is never quite treated as an equal, either. See how at the Flower Banquet, Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue greet Jiang Cheng but not him:
Suddenly, a voice spoke, âSect Leader Nie, Sect Leader Lan.â
Hearing the familiar voice, Wei WuXianâs heart jumped. Nie MingJue turned around again. Jiang Cheng came over, dressed in purple, hand on his sword.
And the person standing beside Jiang Cheng was none other than Wei WuXian himself.
He saw himself walk with hands behind his back, wearing all black. A flute in the shade of ink stuck to his waist, hanging down with crimson colored tassels. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Jiang Cheng, he nodded in this direction to show respect. Attitude slightly arrogant, he took on a profound, disdainful appearance. As Wei WuXian saw the stance of his younger self, the root of his teeth even cringed in soreness. He felt that he really was pretentious, and itched to just beat the hell out of himself.
Lan WangJi also saw Wei WuXian, who stood beside Jiang Cheng. The tip of his brows twitched ever so slightly. Soon afterward, his light-colored eyes returned to where they were, still looking forward in that composed way. Jiang Cheng and Nie MingJue nodded at each other with grave faces. Neither had anything unnecessary to say. After a hasty greeting, the two walked their separate ways. Wei WuXian saw his black-clothed self glance around as he finally saw Lan WangJi. He looked as if he was about to speak before Jiang Cheng came over and stood to his side.
(Chapter 49, Exiled Rebels translation)
They then proceed to talk about him and his lack of a sword behind his back, never having said a word to Wei Wuxian himself:
Nie MingJueâs gaze turned over again, âWhy does Wei Ying not carry his sword?â
Carrying oneâs sword was like wearing formal attire. In such gatherings, it was a non-negligible indication of etiquette. Those from prominent sects saw it as especially important. Lan WangJi responded in a lukewarm tone, âHe had probably forgotten.â
Ning MingJue raised a brow, âHe can even forget something like this?â
(Chapter 49, Exiled Rebels translation)
At Phoenix Mountain it also seems that Wei Wuxian is conditionally a member of the gentry, but not treated like an equal. Sometimes there are these more cheerful interactions:
Holding the flower, Lan WangJi seemed to be quite cold. His tone seemed cold as well, âWas it you?â
Wei WuXian immediately denied it, âNo, it wasnât.â
The maidens beside him spoke at once, âDonât believe him. It was him!â
Wei WuXian, âHow could you treat a good person like this? Iâm getting angry!â
Giggling, the maidens pulled their reins and went to the formations of their own sects. Lan WangJi lowered the hand that he held the flower with and shook his head. Jiang Cheng spoke, âZeWu-Jun, HanGuang-Jun, apologies. Donât pay attention to him.â
Lan XiChen smiled, âThat is fine. I will thank Young Master Weiâs kindness behind the flower in place of WangJi.â
(Chapter 69, Exiled Rebels translation)
But then he will be publicly disparaged and it is readily accepted by others. Jin Zixun first starts an argument with him by criticising Wei Wuxian for fighting Jin Zixuan, then turns the topic to Wei Wuxianâs having taken a third of the prey in the hunt.
Jin ZiXun, âWei, just what what do you mean by going against ZiXuan so many times?â
[...]
Jin ZiXun sneered, âHow is it presumptuous? How is any part of you not presumptuous? Today, in such an important hunt involving all of the sects, you really showed off your abilities, didnât you? One third of the prey have been taken by you. You sure feel pleased, donât you?â
[...]
He mocked, âBut itâs only natural that you donât think youâre in the wrong. Itâs not the first time that Young Master Wei has disregarded the rules. You didnât wear your sword in both last timeâs flower banquet and this timeâs hunt. Itâs such a grand event, and you care nothing for courtesy. In what regard to you hold us, the people who are present with you?â
[...]
No disciple had ever dared say such lofty words in front of so many people. A moment later, as Jin ZiXun finally regained his composure, he yelled, âWei WuXian! Youâre only the son of a servantâhow dare you be so bold!!!â
(Chapters 69-70, Exiled Rebels translation)
Naturally, Jin Zixun is able to weasel out of giving an apology, even though Jiang Yanli demands one. And guess who also takes a third of the prey, but this time without any censure?
Jin GuangYao, âIn reality, not only did Young Master Wei keep a third of the prey to himself, our eldest brother has eliminated over half of the fays and the monsters as well.â
Hearing this, Lan XiChen laughed, âThat is how Brother is like, after all.â
(Chapter 70, Exiled Rebels translation)
Never a Brother
As Iâve already mentioned, Wei Wuxian was never adopted by Jiang Fengmian, or adopted into the clan in general in even a distant way. And this nebulous âweâre letting you live with the main family as a charity, but you arenât really one of usâ attitude also reflects in his relationship with Jiang Yanli.
Iâve already discussed how Wei Wuxian was more like a companion servant to Jiang Cheng than a brother. Itâs also worth noting quickly that neither of them ever refers to the other as a brother. Wei Wuxian refers to Jiang Cheng as his shidi a few times, and Jiang Cheng never even refers to him as his shixiong (because Jiang Cheng views him as his servant, not as even a martial brother, Iâd argue).
Only one member of the Jiang family ever does use familial terms to refer to Wei Wuxian: his shijie, Jiang Yanli. At Phoenix Mountain, when Wei Wuxian is being insulted by Jin Zixun, Jiang Yanli stands up and defends him, and states clearly that she considers Wei Wuxian a little brother:
The people who gathered around Jin ZiXun had on the same dark faces as he did. Yet, taking into consideration Jiang YanLiâs background, they didnât dare talk back to her directly.
Jiang YanLi added, âBesides, hunting is hunting, so why bring the matter of discipline to the table? A-Xian is a disciple of the YunmengJiang Sect. He grew up with my brother and I, and so heâs as close as a brother is to me. Calling him the âson of a servantââIâm sorry, but I wonât accept this. And thusâŚâ
She straightened her back and raised her voice, âI hope that Young Master Jin ZiXun would apologize to Wei WuXian of the YunmengJiang Sect!â
(Chapter 70, Exiled Rebels translation)
It doesnât come through in the Exiled Rebels translation, but she actually refers to Wei Wuxian as her didi in this scene, not her shidi. Sheâs trying to draw a line and state that Wei Wuxian is a part of the family. However, no one takes her seriously, and shortly afterwards we see Jin-furen insisting that Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian shouldnât be walking alone together because it would be inappropriate.
Jiang YanLi whispered, âThatâs not necessary. Iâd like to have a few words with A-Xian. He can walk me back.â
Madam Jin raised her brows, looking Wei WuXian up and down. Her gaze was somewhat cautious, as if she was feeling displeased, âA young man and a young womanâyou two canât stick together all the time if nobody else is present.â
Jiang YanLi, âA-Xian is my younger brother.â
[...]
Wei WuXian lowered his head, âExcuse my absence, Madam Jin.â
He and Jiang YanLi bowed at the same time. As they turned around to leave, Madam Jin grabbed Jiang YanLiâs hand and refused to let her leave.
(Chapter 70, Exiled Rebels translation)
Jin Zixuan also never treats Wei Wuxian the way one might a brother who is still angered with him over his past dismissive treatment of his sister. For example, see their argument at the Flower Banquet:
Before he could see how Lan WangJi reacted, a series of clamor suddenly came from the other end of the base. Wei WuXian heard his own raging shout, âJin ZiXuan! Donât you forget about what things you said and what things you did? What do you mean by this, now?!â
Wei WuXian remembered. So it was this time!
On the other side, Jin ZiXuan also fumed, âI was asking Sect Leader Jiang, not you! The one I was asking about was also Maiden Jiang. How is that related to you?!â
[...]
Jin ZiXuan, âSect Leader Jiangâthis is our sectâs flower banquet, and this is your sectâs person! Are you going to look after him or not?!â
[...]
...Jiang Chengâs voice came, âWei WuXian, you can just shut your mouth. Young Master Jin, Iâm sorry. My sister is doing quite well. Thank you for your concern. We can talk about this next time.â
Wei WuXian laughed coldly, âNext time? There is no next time! Whether or not sheâs doing well isnât any of his business, either! Who does he think he is?â
He turned around and started to leave. Jiang Cheng shouted, âGet back here! Where are you going?â
Wei WuXian waved his hands, âAnywhere is fine! Just donât let me see that face of his. I never wanted to come, anyway. You can deal with whateverâs here yourself.â
Having been abandoned by Wei WuXian, Jiang Chengâs face immediately clouded over.
[...]
Jiang Cheng stowed away the clouds on his face, âDonât mind him. Look at how impolite he is. Heâs used to such rude behavior at home.â
He then began to converse with Jin ZiXuan.
(Chapter 49, Exiled Rebels translation)
Jiang Cheng also quietly dismisses the notion of Wei Wuxian as a brother in relation to Jiang Yanli; when they visit to show him her wedding dress and she asks for a courtesy name, Jiang Cheng specifically says:
Jiang Cheng, âThe courtesy name of my unborn nephew.â
(Chapter 75, Exiled Rebels translation)
Not our nephew, mine.
Even the disastrous invitation to Jin Lingâs one month celebration is framed as a favour to an old shidi, not a family member:
Jin ZiXun, âSince youâve heard it from him already, you should know that I canât wait. Donât tell me that youâll disregard your brotherâs life for the sake of Sister-in-Lawâs shidi?!â
Jin ZiXuan, âYou clearly know that Iâm not that kind of person! He might not necessarily be the one who cursed you with Hundred Holes either. Why are you so rash? I was the one who invited Wei WuXian to A-Lingâs full-month celebration anyways. If this is the way you do things, where does that leave me? Where does it leave my wife?â
Jin ZiXun raised his voice, âItâs best if he doesnât attend! What does Wei WuXian think he isâdoes he deserve to attend our sectâs banquet? Whoever touches him gets nothing but a splash of black! ZiXuan, when you invited him, werenât you worried that you, Sister-in-Law and A-Ling would receive an irremovable stain for the rest of your lives?!â
(Chapter 76, Exiled Rebels translation)
Itâs clear that not only does wider society not consider Wei Wuxian and the Jiangs siblings...they themselves donât, either. Wei Wuxian, after all, readily accepts that his relationship with them is over after he leaves the sect:
Before they parted, Jiang Cheng spoke, âWe wonât see you off. It wouldnât be good if someone saw us.â
Wei WuXian nodded. He understood that it wasnât easy for the Jiang siblings to have come out here. If someone else saw them, all those things they did for the public to believe would be wasted. He spoke, âWeâll go first.â
[...]
He turned around, knowing that itâd be a long time before heâd get to see the people he was familiar with again.
But⌠right now, wasnât he on his way to seeing people he was familiar with as well?
(Chapter 75, Exiled Rebels translation)
Cast Aside
The way cultivation society treats Wei Wuxian when he is not with the Jiangs is also very revealing. Any level of respect he is given is contingent on his position in the Jiang household, and when they arenât around that minimal respect fades away. Look at how disrespectfully he is treated when he approaches Jin Zixun to ask for Wen Ningâs location.
Wei WuXian didnât make small talk either, getting straight to the point, âNo thanks. I donât.â He nodded slightly at Jin ZiXun, âYoung Master Jin, could I please have a word with you?â
Jin ZiXun, âIf you have anything to say, come after our banquet is over.â
In reality, he didnât want to talk to Wei WuXian at all. Wei WuXian could see this as well, âHow long do I have to wait?â
Jin ZiXun, âProbably around six to eight hours. Or maybe ten to twelve. Or until tomorrow.â
Wei WuXian, âIâm afraid I canât wait for that long.â
Jin ZiXunâs voice was arrogant, âYouâll have to wait even if you canât.â
Jin GuangYao, âYoung Master Wei, what do you need ZiXun for? Is it a pressing matter?â
Wei WuXian, âPressing indeed. It allows for no delay.â
[...]
Jin ZiXun, âWei WuXian, what do you mean? You came for him? You arenât standing up for a Wen-dog, are you?â
Wei WuXian wore a broad grin, âSince when is it your business whether Iâd like to stand up for him or cut his head off? Just give him to me!â
At the last sentence, the grin on his face vanished. His tone turned cold as well. It was clear that he had lost his patience. Many of the people within Glamor Hal shivered in fear. Jin ZiXun felt his scalp tingle as well. Yet, his anger soon soared. He shouted, âWei WuXian, you are too bold! Did the LanlingJin Sect invite you today? And you dare run wild here. Do you really think that youâre invincible, that nobody has the courage to confront you? Do you want to overturn the Heavens?â
Wei WuXian smiled, âYouâre comparing yourself to the Heavens? Excuse my language, but your face is a little too thick, isnât it?â
[...]
Just as he was about to rebut, sitting on the foremost seat, Jin GuangShan spoke up.
His voice seemed kind, âItâs not anything too important anyways. You youngsters, why lose your tempers over such a thing? However, Young Master Wei, let me be fair here. Barging in when the LanlingJin Sect is holding a private banquet is indeed inappropriate.â
To say that Jin GuangShan didnât mind what happened at Phoenix Mountain would be impossible. This was also why he only smiled when Jin ZiXun bickered with Wei WuXian but didnât stop them, and only spoke up when Jin ZiXun was at the disadvantage.
Wei WuXian nodded, âSect Leader Jin, it was never my intention to disturb your private banquet. My apologies. However, the whereabouts of the people whom Young Master Jin took are still unclear. Just a moment of delay, and it might be too late. One of the group had once saved me before. I will definitely not sit back and watch. Please do not feel pressured. I will make amends for this at a later date.â
[...]
After a few laughs, he continued, âSect Leader Jin, let me ask you something else. Do you think that, because the QishanWen Sect is gone, the LanlingJin Sect has all right to replace it?â
All was silent within Glamor Hall.
Wei WuXian added, âEverything has to be given to you? Everyone has to listen to you? Looking at how the LanlingJin Sect does things, I almost thought that it was the QishanWen Sectâs empire all over again.â
[...]
A guest cultivator on his right shouted, âWei WuXian! Watch your words!â
Wei WuXian, âDid I say something wrong? Forcing living people to be bait and beating them up whenever they refused to obeyâis this any different from what the QishanWen Sect does?â
Another guest cultivator stood up, âOf course itâs different. The Wen-dogs did all kinds of evil. To arrive at such an end is only karma for them. We only avenged a tooth for a tooth, letting them taste the fruit that they themselves had sown. Whatâs wrong with this?â
Wei WuXian, âTake revenge on the ones who bite you. Wen Ningâs branch doesnât have much blood on their hands. Donât tell me that you find them guilty by association?â
Another person spoke, âYoung Master Wei, is it that they donât have much blood on their hands just because you say so? These are only your one-sided words. Whereâs the evidence?â
[...]
Jin GuangShan stood up as well, his face a mixture of shock, anger, fear, and hatred, âWei WuXian! Just because⌠Sect Leader Jiang isnât here doesnât mean you can be so reckless!â
Wei WuXianâs voice was harsh, âDo you think that I wouldnât be reckless if he were here? If I wanted to kill someone, who could stop me, and who would dare stop me?!â
[...]
âYoung Master Wei really is too impulsive. How could he speak in such a way in front of so many sects?â
Lan WangJi spoke coldly, âWas he wrong?â
Jin GuangYao paused almost unnoticeably. He immediately laughed, âHaha. Yes, heâs right. But itâs because heâs right that he canât say it in front of them, correct?â
Lan XiChen seemed as if he was deep in thought, âYoung Master Weiâs heart really has changed.â
(Chapter 72, Exiled Rebels translation)
The only person at this banquet who speaks to Wei Wuxian respectfully is Jin Guangyao, a consummate manipulator who is also of a lower social status. Everyone else speaks to him dismissively, refusing to respect his request for Wen Ningâs location even though he states that Wen Ning helped him during the war. Wei Wuxian is extremely polite at the beginning of this conversation, and only slowly begins to lose his temper when Jin Zixun speaks rudely and Jin Guangshan decides to bring up the matter of the Yinhufu (Wei Wuxian is right in suspecting him of wanting to replace Qishan Wen, of course, and that itâs very bold of them to think they have the right to a spiritual tool of his just because...theyâre rich?).
When the sects meet at Koi Tower to discuss the breakout at Qiongqi Path, no one considers Wei Wuxian as an independent agent who they might actually want to meet and negotiate with themselves. He is a wayward servant of Yunmeng Jiang who the sect leader has failed to keep in hand.
Jiang Cheng only spoke after a few moments, âWhat he did was indeed a bit too much. Sect Leader Jin, I apologize to you in place of him. If thereâs any way at all to help the situation, please let me know. Iâll definitely compensate for things however I can.â
[...]
Jin GuangShan, âSect Leader Jiang, Wei Ying is your right-hand man. You value him a lot. All of us know this. However, on the other hand, itâs hard to tell whether or not he actually respects you. In any case, Iâve been a sect leader for so many years and Iâve never seen the servant of any sect dare be so arrogant, so proud. Have you heard what they say outside? Things like how during the Sunshot Campaign the victories of the YunmengJiang Sect were all because of Wei WuXian aloneâwhat nonsense!â
[...]
Lan WangJi sat with his back straight, speaking in a tone of absolute tranquility, âI did not hear Wei Ying say this. I did not hear him express the slightest disrespect towards Sect Leader Jiang either.â
[...]
The good thing was that, not long after he felt awkward, Jin GuangYao came to save the day, exclaiming, âReally? That day, Young Master Wei busted into Koi Tower with such force. He said too many things, one more shocking than the next. Perhaps he said a few things that were along those lines. I canât remember them either.â
[...]
Jin GuangShan followed the transition, âThatâs right. Anyhow, his attitude has always been arrogant.â
One of the sect leaders added, âTo be honest, Iâve wanted to say this since a long time ago. Although Wei WuXian did a few things during the Sunshot Campaign, there are many guest cultivators who did more than him. Iâve never seen anyone as full of themselves as him. Excuse my bluntness, but heâs the son of a servant. How could the son of a servant be so arrogant?â
[...]
âIn the beginning, Sect Leader Jin asked Wei Ying for the Tiger Seal with nothing but good intentions, worried that he wouldnât be able to control it and lead to a disaster. He, however, used his own yardstick to measure anotherâs intents. Did he think that everyone is after his treasure? What a joke. In terms of treasures, is there any sect that doesnât hold a few treasures?â
âI knew that something would eventually happen if he continued on the ghostly pathâlook! His killing intents are being revealed already. Killing indiscriminately those from our side just because of a few Wen-dogsâŚâ
[...]
Jin GuangShan continued, âSect Leader Jiang, youâre not like your father. Itâs just been a couple of years since the reestablishment of the YunmengJiang Sect, precisely when you should be displaying your power. And he doesnât even know to avoid suspicions. What would the Jiang Sectâs new disciples think if they saw him? Donât tell me youâd let them see him as their role model and look down on you?â
He spoke one sentence after another, striking the iron while it was still hot. Jiang Cheng spoke slowly, âSect Leader Jin, thatâs enough. Iâll go to Burial Mound and deal with this.â
Jin GuangShan felt satisfied, speaking in a sincere tone, âThatâs the spirit. Sect Leader Jiang, there are some things, some people that you shouldnât put up with.â
(Chapter 73, Exiled Rebels translation)
This is very reminiscent of the way that Jin Zixuan would often turn around and say, âWhy arenât you controlling your servant?â to Jiang Cheng whenever he had a dispute with Wei Wuxian over his treatment of Jiang Yanli.
When Jiang Cheng goes to the Burial Mounds and Wei Wuxian defects from Yunmeng Jiang in order to help the sect save face, Jiang Cheng treats this as a personal betrayal. He not only challenges Wei Wuxian to a duel but then announces that Wei Wuxian has betrayed Yunmeng Jiang and declared himself the enemy of cultivation society:
After the fight, Jiang Cheng told the outside that Wei WuXian defected from the sect and was an enemy to the entire cultivation world. The YunmengJiang Sect had already cast him out. From then on, no ties remained between themâa clear line was drawn. Henceforth, no matter what he did, theyâd have nothing to do with the YunmengJiang Sect!
(Chapter 73, Exiled Rebels translation)
âWei Wuxian has betrayed the sect, and publicly regards all cultivation sects as enemy! Yunmeng Jiang Sect hereby expels him, breaking all ties with him and drawing a clear line between us. Henceforth, no matter what this person does, it will have nothing to do with Yunmeng Jiang Sect!â
(Modao Zushi Radio Drama, Season 3 Episode 5, Suibian Subs)
Naturally, no one ever questions this or wants to hear Wei Wuxianâs side of the story. Jiang Cheng is a sect leader and Wei Wuxian his servant, and that is all cultivation society needs to know.
In Conclusion
Wei Wuxian was never really part of the Jiang family. The wider social view was that he was a servant who was lucky to be taken in by the family and allowed to live in the main house alongside the sect leaderâs children. Heâs accepted into cultivation society conditionally, but only as someone who remains a rank below everyone else.
This attitude isnât just the wider social view which the family themselves disregard; they all play into it. Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Cheng both actively enforce it, Jiang Fengmian passively enforces it, and Jiang Yanli tries but fails to break through the social barriers between them.
KageHina
plain as day - emleewrites
And yet he spends all these years also thinking of himself as rather plain, beyond his lack of height and bright hair, and not really noticeable at all.
In Transit - Mysecretfanmoments
Hinata finds that he likes standing close to Kageyama on buses and trains. It doesn't mean anything--probably. Maybe.
IwaOi
Terrarium - sausaged
He's practically a professional at being proactive (lies, lies, and lies when it comes to Iwaizumi).
At this point, is he really happy with just staying best friends forever? Will he be writing journals and collecting rocks forever (he will, he knows, but that is aside from the point)?
Can he really tag his Instagram photos with #YOLO if he doesn't actually put that phrase into practice?
A story about Oikawa Tooru, Iwaizumi Hajime, plants, and rocks.
They Say it Rain Diamonds on Jupiter - exsao
"You're in love with him."
Hajime considers denying it. He considers deliberately choking on his drink to express surprise, to create a distraction by spitting onto the man in front of him's pristine white shirt and causing a commotion. Instead, he swallows his mouthful of soda and heaves a small sigh once his mouth is free.
"Yeah," he says instead.
He's never been good at lying, anyway.
bait and switch - Stylographic_Blue_Rhapsody
Oikawa's university volleyball team knows he's in a long-distance relationship with someone from high school. They imagine a sweet-faced girl that matches his sarcasm with patience. They are so incredibly wrong.
KuroKen
Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life - todxrxki
Kuroo Tetsurou runs a private Twitter account where he's constantly tweeting about how desperately in love he is with Kozume Kenma. Little does he know that Kenma sees all the tweets and keeps referencing the account in an attempt to get Kuroo to confess to him. / Or, five times Kuroo didn't notice Kenma hinting about his private Twitter account, and one time he finally did.
the things that get caught in the valves of his heart - ghostpot
Emotional competency is not exactly Kuroo's strong suit. Kenma finds it quite amusing.
Accidentally In Love - todxrxki
Kuroo frowns, but then slowly, the corners of his mouth lift up into a smirk. "Well, if it's so unbelievable, why don't we give it a try?"
Kenma glances up at him curiously. "What do you mean?"
"Let's do the 36 questions to fall in love," Kuroo says, still smirking stupidly. "If we don't fall in love, then you're right, it's bullshit. But if we do somehow..." Kuroo waggles his eyebrows. "Then I win." / Kuroo decides he and Kenma should do the 36 questions to fall in love as a joke, but they both start to realize they might actually be in love already.
youâre the brake lines failing (as my car swerves off the freeway) - ghostpot
teach me the way home - icespyders
âDonât go far off, not even for a day, because â
because â I donât know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.â
Kuroo and Kenma grow up in transit.
in this universe - crossbelladonna
Living with Kuroo is sometimes, just like this. It always feels surreal like he's living half a world and a lot of things rush by too quickly. Kenma feels like he'd watched him come and go in a blink, eyes wide and wordless as the shared space went snug in an instant and far larger in the next.
All this, and a glass of water.
Beginningâs End - todxrxki
Somehow over the course of Kenma's lifetime, heâs never really had an opportunity to miss Kuroo. Heâs always been there. Even when they went to different schools, Kuroo would meet him afterwards so they could walk home together, shoulders brushing, Kuroo occasionally taking the opportunity to guide him when his nose was buried in the newest video game. And apparently so is Bokuto. What a strange coincidence.
bitter - silvercistern
He accepted his classmate's chocolates gracefully, then declared his lack of interest with as much dignity as he could muster. She deserved the courtesy. At least she'd acknowledged that Valentine's Day was all about her, and not about him in the slightest.
Because if any of these girls had taken the time to actually get to know him, theyâd quickly realize something even more important than his lack of interest in girls.
And that was that Akaashi hated sweets.
SakuAtsu
The MSBY Black Jackals Read Thirst Tweets - isaksara (syailendra)
Sakusaâs eyes are very dark naturally, sucking in all surrounding rays of light and crushing them in his pupils. For an athlete, he is rather pale. His lips look very pink in comparison. Atsumu is suddenly catastrophically aware that in this instance, âaccentâ is a euphemism. âGood enough for your Olympic-size ego, Miya?â
(In which Atsumu realizes that he is attracted to Sakusa Kiyoomi in the most inconvenient way possible.)
A Liarâs Truth - internetpistol
In which Sakusa Kiyoomi is raised to believe that gay people go to hell but then takes one look at Miya Atsumu and thinks, then why the hell did God make them so fucking hot?
Is This On?
Also on Ao3
Muggle things werenât that complicated. If Potter could master them, then so could Draco. Refrigerators were a godsend and whoever invented the telly was a genius. He had figured out the function of a light bulb instantly, it was the electricity itself that he still hadnât fully grasped. Where did it come from? How did it know when to work? Some things, however, didnât make any sense no matter how many times it was explained to him.
The internet.
Draco didnât understand where it began, where it was located or how it worked. All he knew was that he could ask questions to the phone Harry gave him and it would answer back. Sometimes the lady trapped in the phone would send him to the internet to provide information or other times to a little telly inside the phone too.
Which led him to his current predicament.
Harry sometimes used the internet to talk to Granger. There was a little camera on the computer. At least thatâs what Harry said but hadnât really ever showed him much more than that. Could he use it to talk to Harry?
Draco poked the little camera several times, trying to get it to work. He typed in the password that Harry wrote down hoping that would help. When he was met with a photo of the two of them, he tried not to be endeared. Potter would be such a sentimental sap.
âHow does this work?â Draco muttered to himself as he stared at the little icons. He couldnât remember the steps Harry had taken to talk to Granger. Would it even work if he had remembered? He didnât want to talk to Granger, he wanted to talk to Harry.
âInternet show me Harry.â
Nothing happened.
Draco huffed. It had been a long shot anyway. Reluctantly, Draco pulled out his phone and hit the button that brought out the lady inside. âHow do I call on the internet?â
She repeated his question to him as if that was going to help somehow before he was brought to a list of options.
âSkype.â Draco wrinkled his nose. That didnât sound familiar. He set his phone down and opened the same icon on the computer that his phone had brought him to and typed in Skype.
The first thing that popped up was a little telly. Harry called them videos, but Draco liked that they were little tellies and didnât care what Harry said. The little telly was boring and showed him too many steps to follow. What drew his attention were more little tellies that he could select from. Some were about Skype too, but others were about all kinds of things.
Make-up. Music. Food. Books. Sports.
There were too many to choose from. So he watched several different little tellies. A lot of them were boring and he ended up either leaving for another one or skipping to the good stuff. Some people werenât the actors that they thought they were. Honestly, where was the charisma? The charm? He could do it much better.
Draco paused, thumb over the mouse as he thought about it.
He could do it better than most of the people in the little tellies. He had the charisma that they didnât, he had the charm, the looks, the better smile. And his life was much more interesting than these people. Those with boring lives shouldnât talk for an hour unless their aim was to put people to sleep. Oh, that was another thought. Were there little tellies to fall asleep? There were little tellies for everything. He rather liked the internet, even if it made no sense.
Draco watched a few more little tellies before he figured he knew enough to do it too. It wouldnât let him make a little telly until he created an account, which he thought was kind of rude, but it was their rules. A lot of people didnât use their real name, so he chose not to either. It took him longer than he wanted to find something that suited him.
Slytherinâs Heir.
Finding out that Harry and his idiot friends thought that he had been Slytherinâs Heir had been flattering. Oh, they hadnât thought that, but they didnât realize the kind of compliment it had been. What he wouldnât have given to be Slytherinâs Heir. That kind of power and social status would have made him untouchable.
With his name chosen, it wanted a photo, but Draco didnât have any photos of him on Harryâs computer. So he didnât do anything, let the internet do a blank one. Dracoâs foot tapped a few times as he realized his account was complete. Now all he had to do was make a little telly.
It took a few times to find the right succession of buttons to find the live option. He didnât really understand what being live meant, but he did know that meant that he didnât have to have a little telly already made, that he could create one right there.
âIs this on?â Draco asked, lips pursed as he poked the camera. âIâm not really sure if this is working. Honestly, I was trying to talk to Harry when I decided to make a little telly. Harryâs my boyfriend. Hi Harry.â
Draco waved at the camera with a small smile. He wished he could see Harryâs face.
âHarryâs actually mad at me right now. Heâs an annoying prat who likes to think heâs right all the time.â Draco paused; one side of his face scrunched as the thought about what Harryâs reaction would be to his little telly.
âMaybe mad is an exaggeration,â Draco sighed, one hand pushing through his hair. He hadnât slicked it back in a few days, too out of sorts to feel up to it. His hair fell into his eyes which was an annoying reminder of why he liked his hair slicked in the first place. âHeâs more disappointed.â
Draco grimaced as he remembered the last time he had seen Harry.
âHe loves me,â Draco whispered, hating that his cheeks were warm. âHe says it all the time. At least he used to.â
A long-suffering sigh escaped as he slumped in the chair with wheels that Harry insisted on using even though Draco thought it was a safety concern.
âWhen I say all the time, I do mean all the time,â Draco grinned. âHe didnât hear that growing up at all and I think he says it so much because heâs trying to make up for lost time. I donât mind. I like hearing it. Makes me melt a little bit to know that he loves me so much.â
Draco frowned, sitting up straighter.
âYou better not tell him that though. Thatâs embarrassing.â He waved a finger at the camera in what he hoped was a threatening manner.
âI didnât hear I love you growing up either. It was rare to hear my parents say anything even hinting at love. But the thing is, Iâve always known they loved me. I could see it in the things they did. When my father would show me a new spell or help me with my hand movements. My mother would bring home my favourite sweets whenever she went out. They would stay up later than was presentable with me and listen to the radio.â
The smile on his face was bittersweet. As much as he knew that his parents loved him, it would have been nice to hear it more than they did.
âI guess I picked up their habit,â Draco winced. âI tell Harry I love him⌠sometimes. I try to tell him more, but the words donât come easy to me. My parents knew I loved them, and they certainly didnât need me to say it. But I try to show Harry too!â
Dracoâs hands had begun to move in the beginning but were now thrown in the air.
âI make sure whenever heâs on a case to keep his plants watered, even if the one Neville gave him has it out for me and tries to kill me. When heâs having a bad day I make sure his duvet smells like mint because I know heâs going to collapse on our bed and not move for longer than is healthy and for some reason mint is his favourite smell. I donât really know how to cook that well but the lady in my phone helps me order from Harryâs favourite restaurant and I do that when heâs feeling sad and sometimes when heâs really happy too.â
Dracoâs lips turned downward the longer he talked. It bothered him that Harry couldnât see that he was loved.
âIâm not a people person but I willingly go with him on what he calls adventures around London. Adventure is accurate because wherever Harry goes, trouble follows. Last month we had to run from people with sticks on horses. Harry said they were the law, but I feel like if you were lawmen then you should dress better but thatâs beside the point. Then there was this one time we got kicked out of a library. That was more my fault, but Harry was the one who didnât tell me that the books didnât talk or yell. Who wants to go to a library with silent books? Thatâs like going to a gallery where the paintings donât talk. Whatâs the point?â
Muggles were weird, honestly. There were a lot of things they did that were smart, and he wished that Wizards would adopt too. But a large amount of what Muggles did was boring. They lived boring lives and he felt bad that they didnât have Magic to spice it up.
âI try to show with actions how much he means to me, and I thought I was doing a good job at it, but I guess not.â His eyes closed as he remembered the hurt expression on Harrysâ face.
âHe told me he wished I would tell him I loved him more. I told him there was no point. Which in hindsight, Iâll admit was a mistake. I donât take it back, mind you. But I wish I had explained better before he left. I meant there was no point in saying it more if I could tell him through actions. Which I have been doing since I realized I loved him. I thought he knew. I thought he could see how much I love him.â
Draco swallowed around a lump in his throat. He wasnât worried about their relationship, not really. Harry sometimes needed a few days to cool down when they argued. Only usually, it was anger that was the parting goodbye and not a heartbreaking sadness.
He looked back to the camera, hating that his eyes were wet.
âI love him, so much. I could talk about all the things he does for me that I love. Like the way he looks at me, the way he makes me feel loved and whole. The way he holds my hand too tight, like he thinks Iâll pull away. As if I ever would. Or the way I feel like Iâm high on liquid luck whenever weâre together. But those are selfish to point out. I donât want to talk about me when I bring up what I love about him. Thatâs conceited.
âI love the way he throws a fist in the air when he gets an answer on the telly right. I love his stupid hair that has to be sentient at this point, never lying flat. I love the softness in his eyes when heâs happy, the way they shine so brightly. Almost as bright as his smile. I love how kind he is. I know I give him shit for that, which I should, but thereâs a goodness to him that isnât common anymore, and I love that. I love how much he cares about other people.
âI love how hard he worksâputs every ounce of himself into whatever heâs working on no matter how big or small. I love how smart he is, even if he doesnât see it himself. He thinks of the world in ways that others donâtâa genius to him that fascinates me. I love how much he loves. He loves with everything that he has. He loves people in general. Wants to see the best in them, has a faith that never wavers. His friends are his family, his family is his world and the love he has for all of them is another extension of himself that is everlasting.â
Draco blinked through the wetness as he sniffled.
âIâm honoured to be part of that love. To know that he could care about me a fraction of what he feels for others is overwhelming. I know he loves me; Merlin knows that I do. How could I not? He doesnât just say it, he shows it. And I just wish that he knew how much I loved him too. I know I donât say it enough, and I try, I do, but I had hoped that he could see it. Maybe thatâs my fault. Maybe I didnât show it enough, maybe I didnât try harder. Maybe I should have done more.â
Draco wiped at his cheeks hating that he let his emotions get the best of him. Especially on his first little telly!
âWhat hurts the most is that I donât know how else I could have showed him,â Draco laughed bitterly. âI really donât. I give so much of myself to Harry, perhaps thatâs not healthy, but itâs true. I love him so bloody much and I hate that he doesnât see that, that he doesnât know. How could I not love him? Harry, how could you not know that I love you?
âI love youâŚâ
Draco took a deep breath, wishing it wasnât as shaky as it was as he twirled in the chair. That had to be the reason Muggles had such dangerous chairs, so they could twirl.
âMy first little telly wasnât supposed to go like this,â Draco smiled wryly as he placed his chin on his palm. âI was supposed to charm you all with my good looks and witty personality. And what did I do? Cry over my relationship issues. Like anyone wants to see that. Maybe Iâll tell you the story of how Harry and I fell in love next time. Or maybe the first time we met. Something happier than my tears. Pansy always said Iâm an ugly crierâthe jealous bitchâso no sad topics next time, I promise.â
Draco leaned forward; lips pursed as he tried to figure out how to turn it off.
âIâm not sure anyone is going to see this. Maybe thatâs for the best. I just know I look like a cross between Doxy droppings and Weasley on a good day. I hope you all are having a better day than I am. Iâm going to go as soon as I shut this off.â
Draco frowned, clicking a few buttons before he gave up and shut down the whole computer. The simplest solutions were for the best. He spun in the chair one more time facing the rest of their flat, wishing not for the first time that Harry hadnât taken his happiness when he left.
ââ
Watching his little telly back was a painful experience. His charm and charisma were there, but it didnât look as polished as some of the other little tellies he had seen. Heâd just have to keep trying.
Draco was about to start a new one when he noticed that there were a lot more numbers than there should have been at the bottom. It had been two days since he had made it, and he expected there to only be his replay.
Not the 819,543 that stared at him. And every passing minute the number grew by the tens of thousands.
Draco double checked that he was on his little telly and not someone elseâs before he covered his mouth. Did that many people see him cry? Merlin, what did he do? While the thought was horrifying, what truly scared him was that there were comments.
There were comments.
Oh no.
Draco groaned, already blaming all of this on Harry. And the internet, the internet could take the blame too. With one eye closed, he scrolled down.
NamelessHope 1 day ago Anyone else find this endearing? Heâs like an old grandma that doesnât know how the internet works.
Sorrymum 5 hours ago Heâs so cute. Why canât you be single?
Michael the Sexual Taco 2 minutes ago His partner is trash. Itâs so obvious heâs in love. How could Harry not see it?
Bleach 2 days ago First!!!
CubesAreTriangles 13 hours ago Go bottom go!
Potatoes for Life 7 hours ago Nooooo donât cry! If you cry Iâm going to cry
Draco squinted at the comments. Why were Muggles so fucking weird? And what did they mean bottom? Did people just assume things like that? He liked to fuck and be fucked, thank you very much.
Draco scowled. They werenât going to break up. A touch of hesitancy filled him at the thought. It had been 6 days since he last saw Harry. Not their worst fight, and he wouldâve tried to find Harry and talk to him if it had been completely silent. But Harry sent a Patronus every morning that nuzzled him awake. The Patronus didnât speak a message but the love he could feel was a message all on its own.
Gay4You 20 hours ago Iâve never been invested in someone elseâs love life this much. If you and Harry donât make up Iâm going to riot.
Draco looked through several more comments before he pushed away from the computer. There were a few rude ones and a lot more supportive ones, but all of it made him nervous. He didnât like that so many people knew about his feelings. It was his own fault for making the little telly, but he didnât think anyone was going to see it!
Part of him was panicking. He could delete it, probably, if he asked the lady in his phone how. But did he want to? Draco bit his lip, unsure what to do. If he deleted it, all those people who saw it would still remember it, so heâd only be stopping new people from viewing it.
Before he could go over the pros and cons of either option, the front door slammed open, causing him to yelp and jump out of the chair.
Hands raised, Draco glared at Harry, who was staring at him intently, chest moving rapidly.
âWhat is wrong with you?â Draco sneered. âI nearly came out of my skin. If youâre trying to kill me, you almost succeeded. Merlin donât do that aââ
Draco cut off when Harry marched toward him, eyes still intense. His mouth was still open, ready so say something, but nothing came out when warm hands cupped his cheeks.
âDraco, Iâve always known you loved me.â
Oh no.
He closed his eyes tightly. Harry watched his little telly. How? Why?
âHey,â Harry whispered, thumbs moving in a gentle caress. âLook at me.â
Draco shook his head. He didnât want to.
âIâm sorry.â
That had his eyes opening before they widened. âWhat?â
âWeâre so different,â Harry began with a wry chuckle. âEverything about us is different. And for some reason I forgot that. I assumed that our love language was the same. But the beautiful thing about languages is how different they are. I expected yours to be the same as mine and I was wrong.â
âWhat do you mean?â Draco hated that his voice wavered.
âYouâre right, I do say I love you a lot.â
âItâs not a bad thing,â Draco hurried to explain. âI didnât mean it to soundââ
âI know,â Harry shushed him, a thumb placed over his bottom lip. âI say it because I donât want you to forget that I love you.â
Draco shook his head, wanting to tell Harry that he could never forget. How could he? But he didnât want to interrupt.
âWhen I was little, I didnât just want to be loved by my relatives, I wanted to love them too. But they hated me, and the feeling was mutual. I wanted to love someone just as much as I wanted to be loved. And I guess I say it so much as a reminder to never forget that. I love you, Draco and I canât help but say it over and over again.â
âI know,â Draco parroted as he pressed a kiss to the thumb still over his lip. âI love that you say it so much. I donât want you to stop. Lately, youâve been saying it less.â
Harryâs eyes closed briefly. âIâm sorry. You donât always say it back and that hurts. I thought you didnât want me to say it. I thoughtââ
âNo,â Draco shook his head again, this time more violently. âPlease no. Iâm sorry. I want to say it more, and I promise Iâll try but please donât stop saying it if I canât.â
Harry shushed him again and if he wasnât so close to crying, heâd probably have hexed Harry for treating him like a scared child.
âYou do show me that you love me,â Harry said, eyes soft and full of the love that Draco wasnât sure he could live without. âAll the time and thatâs your love language. You show me through actions, and I needed the reminder.â
âI want to give you the love you deserve,â Draco whispered, blinking rapidly, willing himself not to cry. âYou deserve to hear it just as much as you give it. And Iâm sorry I donât do that.â
âI donât need it,â Harry argued, eyes narrowed. âAnd donât you dare presume to know what I deserve. I get to decide that, and Iâve already given you my heart. So itâs up to you to keep it safe.â
Draco inhaled sharply. Harryâs love was special. âI want to love you vocally too. I want to love you the way you love me.â
âThe way you love me is exactly what I need.â
Dracoâs nose wrinkled. âI feel like youâre settling.â
âNot your decision.â
âHarryââ
âDraco,â Harry began, flicking him in the forehead. âIf you want to say it more, I wonât object. Iâm just telling you that I donât need it like I thought I did. Weâre in love and it doesnât matter how different we show it. The love is still there.â
âOkay,â Draco sniffled, wiping his nose on Harryâs shoulder when he was pulled into a strong embrace. After days of no contact, he basked in their combined warmth. A feeling he had missed more than he thought possible.
Draco turned his head, mouth near Harryâs ear as he whispered,
âI love you.â
If Harry held on tighter, and Draco felt a wetness on his neck, well that was no one elseâs business.
Short Extra
âHi little tellies!â Draco waved at their new camera, one that Harry now manned, taking in Dracoâs new hobby in stride.
âI had planned an intro like all the rest of them do but thatâs so boring. Over here weâre better than everyone else. So I said fuck it and tossed it away. Letâs just get to the good stuff. Youâll never guess what Harry did yesterday. It was so embarrassing.â
âDo you have to embarrass me to so many people?â
Draco grinned, nose scrunching at Harryâs glare. He knew his followers wanted to see Harry, but Harry didnât want to be in the little tellies like that. Plus, Draco kind of liked that it was just him.
âWhat do you mean?â Draco blinked, adopting an innocent expression that had stopped working on Dobby when he was three. âIâm just telling my friends.â
âYeah,â Harry snorted, eyes on the subscriber count that was rapidly increasing. âAll 3 million of them.â
It still blew his mind that so many people wanted to hear him talk about his life. He had known from the beginning that he could pull it off. Had always known he had more charm than everyone else on the internet. His little tellies were clearly superior.
And to think it all stemmed from his love of Harry.
My Thoughts on TDP Season 4
Nobody asked for my opinion but Iâm giving it anyways.Â
Dude, what was going on with Rayla this entire season? She comes back with zero explanation and acts so casual about the whole thing, even though she has to know how much it hurt Callum to see her leave. And then she says that she went after Viren for vengence (when in ttm and Dear Callum she makes it pretty clear thatâs not her reasoning), ditches a dragon in need, ditches Soren, and FORGETS IBISâ NAME? Like bro. It doesnât help, also, that Iâm pretty sure she came back the day that Viren does. As the season went on she started acting more like herself- and the coin scene was really cool to watch- but idk. I think Iâm still kind of hoping that itâs revealed that this is a fake Rayla, and the real one will come back and issue a real apology to Callum and be hella awkward and nervous about being around him, bc her leaving for two years was played off a little too much for my liking.Â
Iâm also kind of upset that Callum didnât get mad and yell at her, I was dying to see that happen. My boy deserves a moment to be completely honest about his feelings. And in a panel they did a while back there was some light alluding to what they called the âscary hand ice sceneâ or something like that, which really seemed like it was talking about Rayla having some kind of vulnerable moment, but that didnât happen this season, so maybe it happens later or I fabricated that whole thing or they just didnât actually do it. I still hope we get a scene like that at some point though, itâd be interesting to see if Rayla almost losing her hand in season one is still effecting her somehow, mentally or physically.Â
At the end too- just one more thing about Rayla and then Iâll move on- when she sees Viren and wants to go after him, and Callum lets her go ALONE? That would have been the perfect opportunity for him to show her that theyâre stronger together, since she keeps leaving him because she wants to keep him safe, but instead he just let her walk off. I just felt like that could have been a really interesting scene, but maybe they had their reasons for it. Idk, it felt weird to me.Â
Loved Terry though. He seems like such a genuinely sweet person and I appreciated him sticking up for Rayla and calling Claudia out- which, by the way, the whole coin scene was awesome. Iâm so glad that (potentially fake) Rayla got Runaan and her parents back.Â
I also loved seeing more of Soren! We didnât get a whole lot of Soren actually being a good guy and showing off his skills in the past few seasons, so I really enjoyed that spotlight on him this time around, he deserves it. I love Soren so much.Â
Finally, I want to say that Iâm glad Viren didnât get a redemption arc. It was kind of hinted at for a second there, when he went on that speech about how he was always trying to be something heâs not and now wants to travel the world, and it felt really cheap and shallow to me, personally. After all the shit he did in the past three seasons, now suddenly heâs seeing the error in his ways? I get that death can be enlightening, but it was too quick of a change in him for my liking, so Iâm glad they donât seem to be going that route.Â
So yeah, loved most of the season, just hoping they clear up and explain where Raylaâs been, why she came back, and wtf the key of Aaravos does and how Callum knows itâs the key of Aaravos, because that was kind of thrown in there and I feel like that should be elaborated upon.Â
Why You Should Wear Boots after Picking a Major You Didnât Want
A university is a place where dreams are thrown away.
Such is the case far too often. It remains Real even between the railroad, highway and train tracks. Even there, people interrogate themselves: âThis is your dream, but is it realistic? How much is the starting salary? Look at your classmates, elegantly breezing over what you clawed through, tooth and nail. Look at your competitorsâââ
So many choose to drown their dreams themselves⌠even though, at Elsewhere University, the dead do not rest quietly. The Wild Hunt is proof of that. Yes, that Wild Hunt, which rides across campus when the fog rolls in. We all know the versions in which they hunt for students unlucky (or unbelieving) enough to be outside when the hounds begin baying. Stay inside, stay quiet, and youâll be all the better for it, if they ignore you.
What about the other versions, though? What about the versions in which it is best to open your windows and howl back? There are tales like that, tooââ
Sometimes, those brave enough to shout along with the Wild Hunt will be rewarded with a share of prey or gold. Those kind enough to repair a lost hunterâs sled soon discover this to be the right choice, for upon closer inspection, the hounds are not just hounds. Their bones are laden heavy with wrath.
And sometimes, villagers tell tales of a cloaked rider on a white horse. Horseshoes spark against the night breeze. He will ask you to play an impossible game of tug-of-war. If you are wise, you will tie the other end of the rope to a sturdy oak. The leader of the Hunt likes clever little things. He might even drop a reward in your boot.
Perhaps this is why you see students wearing boots for a while after they declare their majors. Even Magenta (who got her name from always wearing high-heeled loafers of that particular shade) and Ma-Boi-Blanche (who has 17 pairs of white sneakers) wore boots back then. Rumor has it, according to a friend of a roommate of a Forbidden Major, that this footwear will help you abandon your misery.
When the Wild Hunt rides as a group, they come to condemn. The RAs are not wrong in telling you to run for safety when the fog descends.
On the other hand, when the leader of the Hunt appears alone, he comes to test. In this more benign (but not safe, never safe) form, 4% meet a bedraggled man, 2% a king of old, 3% a specimen of demon (the Christian subspecies), 6% a harlequin, and 5% a sledder with a thick Mecklenburg accent.
84% of those who have survived the encounter say that the leader of the Hunt wears a cloak and a wide hat that partially hides his eyes (one of which is duller than the other). He gallops in on a splendid white horse.
95% of those who survived the encounter were wearing boots (one of them was wearing spatterdashes over court shoes, but eh, close enough).
100% of the survivors say that you must be ready to be tested. Be kind, clever, daring. If you are all thatââand wary, wise, lucky tooââthe leader of the Hunt will let you go and stuff something in your boot. A post-it, on which is written the major that they chose, yet hated with every fibre of their being.
Now, put the boot back on and walk. It may be a bit awkward to walk around, what with the paper writhing under your feet, but do so anyway. Every student who has tried it reports that when they got back to their dorms, the paper had vanished from beneath their soles. In its place, they had gained a floating sensation, grafted in their bones.
By the end of the year, Ma-Boi-Blanche and Professor Redd were chattering away like old friends. The Professor had to admit that his student wasnât very good at dissections, but there was an unmistakable passion for anatomy in his eyes, and he would improve soon. (Very soon, especially with Professor Reddâs talent of acquiring practice bodies, his jaunty hat growing redder with every new specimen.)
On the other side of campus, the law majors learned to listen for the click-clack of high-heeled loafers. Woe betide the unlucky people who faced off against Magenta, who suddenly threw herself into mock trials with gusto. Her opponents gained a Pavlovian fear response to seeing any shade of pink.
This did not go ignored. The Involved went up to the two, in order to warn them.
âThe Gentry do not offer things for free,â they said. âAnd intelligence isnât cheap. What in Morganwode did you pay?â
To which the ones who met the Huntsman merely laughed, because they werenât any smarter. The only difference was that now, they were interested in the subjects they found so odious before.
In the old tales, a satisfied rider of the Wild Hunt will reward a human with meat. The person will walk back home in the dark, one shoe on and one shoe off, the boot growing heavier with every step. Once home, they will see that the raw, bloody meat has transformed into gold.
There are a few who still receive this, not always in the payment of gold, but in blessings. (Childe Houseâs oldest RA is one of them, which explains why the once-every-305-days evacuation has a 100% success rate, even when half a dozen residents donât understand what a âmandatory house meetingâ or a âfire drillâ is.)
 Which begs the question: why does the leader of the Hunt help so many?
Rewards are meant to be given to the exceptional few. Yet the unhappy are not part of these few. Given the number of students with newfound rapture in their eyes, one does not need to be exceptionally kind, clever, or daring to transfer their passions. Just wary, wise, and lucky are enough.
When asked, the leader of the Wild Hunt proclaimed that such a spell is childâs play. Weâve already provided the ingredients: two subjects and a passion. The price is low because all he needs to do is to sever the interest from one subject, then attach it to another. Simple work, he said. He would never think of charging so much for something he could do before breakfast. It is not befitting a warrior. Think of it as a favour from a father to his children, he said, then laughs as if there is a joke here that no one else understands.
There are more people who understand than he might think, for the more competent members of the Forbidden Major have another theory. Anyone with passing knowledge of folklore would be able to recognize this person at a glance, they say (quietly, and never to the Huntsmanâs face). He is the amalgamation of ghost, fae and old god.
The first rider of the Wild Hunt might be, depending on the amount of fertilizer on the campus lawn and the moon phase, the oldest warrior poet. There are less battlefields for him to watch over now, but still he is song and madness. Still, he is overcome with fury when he sees yet another soldier buckle before the fight has begun.
This child would have made a fine skald. That child could have become a brilliant shield-maiden. This one had the makings of a king, yet they chose to push these futures away, he said through clenched teeth. These children began to think there was nothing left. They started to look at the pond and that single eighth-floor window which could open all the way.
This is not a battlefield, but⌠to give up before the horn sounds, under his watch?
Unforgivable, he said, with an unblinking smile, all teeth and lone glittering eye. To despair is to slander my hundred names.
So the leader of the Hunt casts a few spells here, a little trickery there, and coaxes the bright frenzy back in their eyes, or so the Forbidden Majors whisper. The price is only low because of who and why he is. He helps them so they can die more valiantly, another day.
 Think of it as a favour from a father to his children, he says, then laughs as if there is a joke here that no one else understands. This is despite the fact that half the Forbidden Majors and a fifth of the Literature Majors know who he is.
(Not that they would reveal that, ever. The all-fatherâs wrath is a terrible thing.)
 Addendum:
Statistics unavailable for those who encountered the Wild Huntâs leader alone, while not wearing boots. Mythological references, as well as the Sword-House valetâs intuition, imply it is better not to know.
[Authorâs Note]
I did not intend âWhy You Should Wear Boots after Picking a Major You Didnât Wantâ to be so long. Do pardon me.
There is much debate over the identity of the Wild Huntâs leader. My personal favourite theory is that the leader is Odin, or some variant of him, which this submission is based on. Still, I couldnât resist hinting at the others:
âBedraggled manâ = multiple stories, in which the Huntâs leader is any hunter who preferred hunting to going to church, or else slandered a certain god
âKing of oldâ = Arawn
âHarlequinâ = in Vitalisâ Ecclesiastical History Vol. 2 (1140), Hellequin/Herlequin is the herald of a Wild- Hunt-esque procession of tortured souls. There is also King Herla.
âSledder with a thick Mecklenburg accentâ = Frau Gauden
honestly I think the reason why corypheus was such a let down as a villain is that he could have been a really good one. like we're told through all three games that the blight was caused by the seven magisters that cracked the black city, which is in turn why mages are locked up in circles etc, which are the two main points of dao and da2. and then we get corypheus who is one of those magisters! like that's huge!! we're essentially given a villain who could tell us so much about what happened! and yet all we're able to get are a few comments that hint at what happened that we can never really talk about or investigate?
like corypheus says that the seat of the maker was empty. he says that the black city was already corrupted. that should be a massive revelation! it means that the blight / taint that corrupted the world came from in the fade! if the golden city / black city was empty and corrupted, were the magisters actually 'thrown out' as the chantry says? if they were, and it wasn't by the maker, who did? was it the forgotten ones? was it something else? if they weren't thrown out, did they explore the black city? what did they find? did they leave because it was black and empty?? like yeah I get that corypheus is insane and wants to install himself as a god because he's discovered there are no gods, but that doesn't mean I don't want to hear what he knows / what he remembers about the black city!
corypheus appearing really should've had a bigger impact on the chantry. like the inquisition, whether or not the inquisitor believes in the maker or is andrastian, is put forward as an army of the faithful led by andraste's chosen. corypheus should've really shaken those beliefs. he has such scorn for the maker and the chantry, and I think it would've been really interesting if he'd started trying to destroy what the chantry teaches. maybe people wouldn't have believed him, but that kind of thing still would've caused chaos. and if he was actively working to break down the chantry, that would've given us more chances to either interact with him, or learn more about what happened.
and because we have such little interaction with him directly, beating him isn't at all satisfying? like he crushes us in haven, but from that point we never directly interact with him until the final fight. and because we succeed in every other main quest without directly seeing him, he starts feeling easy to beat. there needed to be more instances where he beats you. hes a powerful tevinter magister with power over red lyrium and the blight, and yet that's never really directly thrown at us. by the time we fight him in the temple of sacred ashes again, he doesn't feel like much of a threat? even his death scene, which was meant to seem cool and like a triumph, feels lack luster, because of how little we've interacted with him and how easy it feels by that point.
like compare it to meredith stannards boss fight / death. to me that was just? so much better? because a. as the fight begins and the whole red lyrium idol corruption becomes clear, we have that 'oh shit' moment, b. meredith was a constant presence throughout the game, and c. her end was really well done. like the way the red lyrium brings the statues to life, overtakes her body, and shows us how horrifying it is is so well done. I personally feel like the voice actress did a great job here because even though she's a villain and has done horrendous things, I couldn't help but feel some sympathy for her when she's talking throughout the fight and wondering if she's wrong. and then her death scene is so brutal? again it's partly the voice actress, but the way she screams as she solidifies to red lyrium is a really well done moment that for me had some body horror vibes / kind of calls back to the darker vibe of dao. it feels like it has an impact on the characters and the story and was to me such a good end for da2. in comparison corypheus' death just... didn't hit the same way, and I think that's partly to do with there being no body afterwards. like if the final fight had been harder / had had a bigger build up / he'd been a more present villain, I would've been fine with him turning into another idol. like the guy is encrusted with red lyrium, and it might've been a way to link to da2, and also potentially tell us more about the inevitable consequences of red lyrium, which might come up in da4.
idk just. he could've been really interesting as a catalyst to permanently damaging the chantry, or even just a genuinely challenging villain, but in the end he's just. almost comical and its a shame
#corypheus#dragon age inqusition#dragon age meta#meredith stannard#da2#da4 speculation#sort of#red lyrium#to be clear im v anti chantry (kind of obvious lol) and anti templars so me saying i have sympathy for meredith at her end#isnt saying shes anything but a villain becauae she is#but shes a well written villain#and honestly her fate is. kind of horrifying#i saw a post speculating that like. what if her consiousness is trapped in the idol and like bro. that would be so sjidisa#genuinely horrifying#i also feel like we might see the statue / get call backs to meredith again? from the da4 teaser#anyways sjsiaja#rambling along as always
Live While Weâre Alive
(gif by @rex-is-best)
pairing: commander wolffe x f!reader
summary: you thought being a newly recruited civilian doctor to the GAR was hard enough until you developed a hopeless crush on Commander Wolffe
words: 2.8 k
warnings: mature, some suggestive talk, mutual pining, medical exams, co-workers to lovers, a doctor having inappropriate thoughts about their patientÂ
a/n:Â I started writing this awhile ago and then lost all creative motivation but I've been in a Wolffe mood the past few days and sad we didn't get to see him in The Bad Batch so here we are. I'd like to apologize to my doctor dad and all medical professionals everywhere lol. Also, I had intended for this to end in smut but then got lost in feelings so there mayyyy be a chapter 2. We'll see ;)
read on ao3!
You want to fuck him. Itâs been decided. This realization couldnât have come at a worse time, though. Youâre surrounded by Jedi and Clone Officers in a very important meeting detailing your next mission. But you only have eyes for one of the men and heâs currently standing at the head of the room giving a briefing to the holo of Master Yoda. Itâs a testament to Commander Wolffeâs presence that you barely notice the little green Jedi Master heâs conversing with. Well, his presence and his extreme handsomeness.
When youâd first met him, youâd been truly intimidated. The other women you worked with nodded in understanding, whispering they had been thrown off by his cybernetic eye and prominent scar. But that wasnât it. Youâd noticed those things, but that wasnât what made you uneasy.
It was the fact that he took one look at you and seemed to see right into your soul. You couldnât explain it but you felt like with just a glance, he could tell your deepest insecurities. And stars, did you have a lot of those.
You had worked your way up through the medical field and had started your residency at the biggest hospital in Coruscant. After your training ended, you had secured a permanent job there. It had been difficult, to say the least. Though you knew you were qualified, even more so than most of your male co-workers, you still doubted yourself often.
Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi had come to visit you one nondescript Thursday afternoon, telling you of the need for doctors in the GAR. He said you came most highly recommended when he was searching for recruits but still, you thought a mistake had been made and that someone soon would realize and send you back to your normal life. It was a recurring nightmare youâd developed in the past few weeks that shook you from your sleep.
You had agreed to join the GAR, sympathetic to the cause and wanting to do your part. The next few weeks had consisted of you getting your bearings and meeting the rest of the staff at the base . Kix, the clone medic in charge, had helped you learn the ropes and had introduced you to all his brothers. At first, you had been overwhelmed by the sea of identical faces. As the weeks had gone on, youâd learned everyoneâs names and theyâd made you feel welcome, like one of their own.
The Commander and you had crossed paths several times. He was polite but distant. Not like you blamed him. He had more important things to do than exchange drawn out pleasantries. With each run-in, though, he seemed to be making more of an effort to be personable. Unfortunately, each conversation left you looking more and more like an idiot. Or a diâkut. The boys had been teaching you some Mandoâa.
You were a medical professional, a well-respected doctor and yet Wolffe made you feel unsure of yourself. It had been so long since youâd had a crush that you didnât realize this was what the beginning of one felt like.
*******
As you sit around the war room table, you feel even more like a school girl. Instead of paying attention to whatever Master Yoda is saying, youâre transfixed by Wolffeâs face. The hazy blue light from the holo reflects off his features, making him look ethereal. His scar looks even more prominent and you blush, remembering how often youâve wondered what it would feel like to let your fingers trace it. Â And his lips. Theyâre moving, responding to whatever the Jedi has said. Theyâre mesmerizing and now youâre thinking of what it would be like to kiss him. Or even better yet, to have those lips pressed against the plushier parts of your body.
You continue to stare until you realize his face has turned to you. It probably only takes you a second to come back to reality but it feels like an eternity. Somehow youâre able to respond to the question.
âYes, Commander. All medical personnel are prepared for an 0800 liftoff. Kix will take his team with the 501st and Iâll have my staff along with the 104th. Weâll reconnoiter once weâve landed on Hisseen.â The rest of the table nods, moving the conversation along. Wolffe stares at you for a moment, a hint of a smirk on his lips. You avert your gaze, finding the table a much safer object of your attention.
The discussion wraps up and Wolffe stands at attention, puffing his chest out, before Master Yoda disappears. Once again, your eyes are drawn to him. Youâre not sure how but he makes something so mundane look indescribably attractive. Wolffeâs head turns in your direction but youâve already bolted from your seat, hoping to cool down in the hallway.
Kix pushes through the crowd to get to you. âHey, Doc. Howâd the meeting go?â You shrug. âNothing new to report. Just making sure weâre all set for our campaign.â Heâs shifting back and forth, a sort of glazed look in his eyes. You realize heâs not paying particularly close attention. Itâs the look of someone asking you something just so they can request a favor in return.
âHmm oh yeah, thatâs nice. Say, Doc, do you think you could cover for me for a few hours? I have some urgent business to attend to.â
âSince when is playing Sabacc with Fives and the boys urgent?â
âSince I remembered how terrible they are at it. I can make a real killing playing against them.â
You laugh. Itâs true. Youâve come to love those men but a lot of them are really horrible at the game. Youâll need to give them a remedial course if you have any downtime on Hisseen. âOf course. What do you need me to do?â He rewards you with a huge grin. âNothing hard! A few higher ups coming in for their physicals. Just the usual. Make sure theyâre in tip top shape to get shot at by some tinnies.â
He gives you the list. Itâs only a handful of men but the last one on it makes your blood go cold. âCommander Wolffe needs a physical?â Kix is oblivious to your inner turmoil. âOh yeah, but he knows the drill. Honestly everyone can do it themselves at this point. Weâre basically there to oversee it as a formality.â
You swallow down your apprehension and nod. âSounds easy enough. Go have fun. And take it easy on them, will ya? Let them keep a little of their dignity intactâ Kix just grins and shoots you a wave as he runs off.
*******
Your first few appointments go just fine. The officers are professionals and Kix was right, they could do these routine physicals with their eyes closed. You give them all your seal of approval and settle in to do your paperwork before your last, most anticipated patient arrives. The forms in front of you hold no interest and you find yourself checking the chrono every few seconds.
Itâs not easy but you manage to finish your work. You set it aside and take steadying breath. Five more minutes and heâll be here. You scold yourself. The Commander has never been anything but professional. Youâre the one thinking these very unprofessional thoughts.
And youâre a doctor, for kriffâs sake. Your patients should be able to come to you without worrying you may be fantasizing about what they look like naked. But these are uncharted waters. Itâs your first time having to deal with a patient youâre this attracted to. They really should take your medical license away.
Just as youâre thinking of packing it all up and handing in your resignation to the Jedi Council, a knock at the door snaps you to attention. Well, here goes nothing. You scold yourself once again for checking your reflection in the mirror before answering the door.
You had tried to adopt a passive, professional look to your face before greeting Wolffe but it must not have worked. âEverything alright, Doc? Iâm not early, am I?â You shake your head.âNot at all. Punctual as always, Commander.â You beckon for him to come in and take a seat. You close the door, then sit across from him at your desk.
Your datapad hums to life and you busy yourself opening the appropriate forms you need to fill out. The weight of his eyes is heavy on you and your cheeks heat up in spite of yourself. You push on through as best you can.
âWell, Commander, how are you feeling today?â Thereâs that ghost of a smirk again but it vanishes so quickly you're not sure if you imagined it. âI feel like a million credits.â You giggle despite it not even being that funny. Youâve got it bad. âGlad to hear it. This should be quick then.â You gather your equipment and get to work.
First, you take his weight. Then, you listen to his heart. You press the stethoscope to his sternum, thankful you can do this over his blacks. He observes you the whole time. âAnd what about you? How are you today, Doc?â You risk a glance and meet his eyes. That was a mistake.
âMe? Oh-um just fine. Maybe not like a million credits but a few hundred at least.â You trail off dumbly but he humors you with a chuckle. Youâre not sure youâve ever heard that sound from him before. Itâs like music to your ears. âAnything I can do to help? You do look a little flushed. Are you sure you donât have a fever?â You avert your eyes again.
âNo. Iâm alright. Itâs just, uh, hot in these uniforms. The coarseweave doesnât breathe.â
âYou sure? Maybe I should be the one giving you a check-up.â
You realize heâs toying with you now.
âThat wonât be necessary, Commander.â
You move on to check his lungs. âBreathe in for me.â You move the stethoscope to his chest, then move it around a few different spots on his back. âYou can call me, Wolffe. If youâd like.â He breathes in every time, not even needing prompting, ever the dutiful soldier, even when heâs teasing you.
âI would like that. Thank you, Wolffe.â
Next, you measure his blood pressure. Youâre shocked that itâs so low. He sees the look of surprise on your face. âSomething wrong?â
âNot at all. The opposite, in fact. Your pressures are great. I just thought with your lifestyle they might, understandably, be a bit higher.â
âWhat kind of lifestyle do you think I have?â
Youâre backtracking as quickly as you can. âI just meant, your life as a soldier, it must be extremely stressful.â
Thereâs that smirk again. âIt is. But you donât get to be a Commander by not being able to handle the pressure.â
âOf course. But even so, if youâd like some stress relief techniques I can suggest some.â He hums as if really thinking it over. Thankfully thereâs only one part of your exam left. Which is good because youâre not sure how much resolve you have remaining.
âEverything looks great. Iâll just do a head and neck exam and then I can send you on your way.â
You need to touch him for this part but you stop yourself, hands hovering but not quite meeting their destination. You feel like once you touch him, really feel his skin under your fingers, there may be no going back.
Wolffe sees your hesitation, then slowly reaches out to take your hands. You watch with wide eyes as he guides them to his neck. He looks up at you innocently enough but you can tell heâs laughing internally. You try to reign in control of the situation.
âSorry, I just got distracted.â The Commander studies you but this time itâs in earnest. âAre you nervous? Thisâll be your first time in an active war zone, right?â You had been anxious but not about that. But now that he mentions it, yeah, you honestly donât know what youâve gotten yourself into.
âYes, Iâm not sure what to expect. I guess you could say Iâm a little scared.â Wolffe gently holds your chin, directing you to look back at him. âI wonât lie. Itâll be overwhelming and frightening. Battles can seem never-ending. But I promise I wonât let anything happen to you.â
Youâre staring into each otherâs eyes and you donât want to stop. But then heâs clearing his throat and gently removing his hand from your skin. You realize youâve been resting your own hands on his shoulders this whole time. âThank you, Wolffe. I do feel much better knowing youâll be there.â You offer him a smile, hoping it conveys just how much you appreciate him looking out for you.
You begin your exam, gently kneading where his neck meets his shoulders, checking for any anomalies. Then you move to his throat. The throat youâve so often been distracted by. Itâs featured prominently in your daydreams. You move your hands along it, under his jawline. Having a man this powerful baring one of the most vulnerable parts of his body to you is intoxicating. Focus, diâkut.
Everything feels normal except for some knots you find resting right below the surface of his smooth skin. âLymph nodes feel good. Youâre a little tense, though. But I bet itâs from that bucket you have to wear most of the day.â He hums in thought. âTrue. But even so. Maybe you could give me some of those ideas for stress management?â He looks up at you with big eyes. Thereâs mischief in them but something else. Vulnerability?
You gulp audibly. âOf course. There are a few that work particularly well, um, like deep breathing techniques, going on walks, talking with friends, meditation, journaling, physical activityâŚâ Youâre rambling, fighting a losing game against your resolve. Wolffe thinks on it. âPhysical activity seems like a good place to start.â His hands come up to gently cover yours that are still resting on his neck.
The sensation of his calloused fingers on your skin sends shivers down your body. You close your eyes, feeling the last of your self-control topple over. âWolffe,â you whine âWe shouldnâtâŚâ He immediately drops his hands, worry etched on his face. âIâm so sorry. Itâs just- I thought you wanted-.â He cuts himself off, snapping up to his feet and to attention. âDoctor, you should report me to General Plo Koon for immediate disciplinary action.â
Dank Farrik, youâve just ruined everything.âWolffe! No, Iâm not reporting you to anyone. If anything you should report me for being so unprofessional.â His shoulders relax a bit but he still eyes you as if youâre a live grenade that might explode at any second. âWhat do you mean?â You sigh in frustration. This isnât how you wanted to confess your feelings to him.
âIâŚwant you, Wolffe. The second I realized that I should have asked to be re-assigned to a different battalion. Instead I thought I could push those feelings down and continue to do my job. Looks like that was a mistake.â You hang your head, avoiding his piercing gaze. Heâs silent for just a moment but it feels like an eternity.
âSo, you want me and I want you?â You nod your head, ashamed, as he continues. âThen whatâs the problem, Doc?â Your eyes snap to his, not believing what youâre hearing.
âIsnât it wrong of us?â
Wolffe sits down on the exam table again, genuinely thinking on it. âI donât see why. Weâre both consenting adults. We donât work directly with each other- I report to General Koon, you report to General Kenobi- so thereâs no real conflict of interest. The worst weâll face is a little ribbing from the boys if they find out.â
You raise your head to look him in the eyes, needing to make sure heâs serious and that this isnât some twisted joke. What you find staring back at you is hope and promise. He senses your trepidation and gently takes your hands in his. âIâm sorry if I came on strong. But the thing about this life is that there are no guarantees. Tomorrow isnât promised and so I figured Iâd rather go for something, someone, that I want and have my heart broken rather than regretting my inaction.â
Your eyes roam the scars on his face, evidence of just how true his words are. Youâre heading into active battle tomorrow. One or both of you could be injured, or worse. You step towards him. He spreads his legs so you have room to get closer. You rest your forehead on his, breathing him in.
His hands come up to caress your sides. You take a shaky breath. He questions you softly. âCyarâika?â Ah, now thatâs one of the new words you definitely remember. His vulnerability makes you ache and the decision to hand your heart over is an easy one. âYouâre right, Wolffe. Might as well do some living while we can.â
