Vil’s phone buzzed. He hefted up his phone to see the word “Huntsman” glowing from the caller ID. Vil laughed weakly. Only Rook would call him before sending a text. Didn’t he know no one answered their phones anymore? Smiling despite himself, Vil pressed the green call button, turned on the speaker, and laid the heavy phone down on his chest. “Roi du Poison!” Rook said, his voice just as enthusiastic as always, and his audio crackly from the connection. “I wasn’t expecting you to answer. Are you done for the day?” “Yes, for today,” Vil responded. “I’m now a couple pieces of endomyocardial tissue lighter.” He said it like a joke. “I have an MRI tomorrow, then it’s back to Sage’s Island.”

“I hope they take good care of all those precious parts of you,” Rook said, as if that were a normal thing to say. Vil flinched. “Precious, indeed.” Rook had said it in jest, an attempt to lighten the mood, but it stung slightly. Vil knew how much was in his bank account, the investment holdings his father set up for him, what his life insurance policy was, and how much he could expect to be paid for his work. But if someone cut something off of him, what were those little pieces worth? How much less was he worth without them? Would the tissue heal back, or leave little 5000-thaumark divots in his very expensive atrial chamber? “It’s out of my hands now,” Vil finally replied, trying not to miss a beat. “I’m sure they will. The researchers here won’t get another chance like this for a long time.”

My Shopping Addiction

I know I haven’t done much of anything with this blog. But my shopping adventures has been really a roll coaster of emotions. In the last three years I developed a shopping habit to the point of recurring debt.

I never thought I would fall into the credit card trap but now I am in a hole. A hole that depleted my savings & left me at square one again. Especially during a time where the economy has triple everything. And my dream of owning my first property seems even further away.

It’s actually started during my last job. Five years ago I was in a good place with my job, my relationship (well at least I hoped) & my finances were stellar. Not anywhere over middle class but not broke either. But I had a budget, I was occupied being happy & when I did shop it wasn’t out of control. If I didn’t need it, I knew how to walk away. For travel & special occasions I saved then spent. Also I was in an balanced economic & situation where I could save & spend.

Then in 2020 I got fired because my job was laying off people & putting all the work on the rest of us & I couldn’t come into work without the look of pure unhappiness. So three strikes of mistakes & they wanted me to quit & give them two weeks but I told them to fire me instead.

Next month my ex girlfriend broke up with me, officially anyways. And it devastated me. I was so in love with her. I was disrespectful to her at the wrong time but she didn’t really love me to begin with either. So during that wrong time I lashed out. I should have left her after our first lease was over. After the first break up. #Lesbiandrama

When all that happened back to back, Covid was still present & annoying; I decided to fuck off a lot of things. I had a nice saving & decided to live in my car. I didn’t want another boss. I was fed up with corporate America. So fed up with having face to face with management & corporations that could care less about you. Our lease was also ending & I didn’t want to pay rent for nobody else. I didn’t want another relationship. I was tired of falling for someone that didn’t never love me in return. It was a waste of my time & I don’t want to feel heartbroken ever again.

So I made the leap to be single & houselessness in my car. I didn’t want to go back to my mother’s in my home state. I still had to pay my car note & insurance & didn’t want to leave Atlanta. Even though I wanted to travel. I thought I just travel in my car. But I ended up taking money from my 401k & saw all that money all at once in my checking account & I went crazy shopping. Emotional shopping.

I took a lot out to pay off my car note. But I decided to stay up North at the time & I needed to get a check to pay my car note in the amount of more than $5000. But I ended up buying food, shopping at Windsor & bought mostly ever summer dress they had on the rack. I just went on a spending spree like I had just won the lottery.

I tried to rationalize with myself that I can make the money back once I got a job I liked. I told myself the dream of getting a rental property was over. I was with my old company for five years & it disgusted me that I had to start all over again. To get any kind of home loan you have to be on the job at least two years. I said welp. I am not ready for a job right now. So I spent my savings.

Then I reopened my credit card. I started for one reason, I needed my car’s tire changed. I got a blowout. At this time I didn’t have the money & I lived in my car so I justified it as I needed the work done to live in my car. Then I used it for a rental car because I didn’t want to put miles on my car to Florida because at this point I have been constantly driving for Amazon.

I didn’t remember how fast money goes. I developed a habit/high of walking into a Marshalls or TJMaxx everyday because either I was bored in my car or didn’t want any people to see me in my car or I didn’t know where to go. I created a daily shopping habit for months. And it adds up, $20 here, $80 there, sometimes over $200. It was bad.

Since then I finally gotten a position of employment I enjoy. But it came too late. I depleted my savings. Still hadn’t paid off my car & I have two huge credit card debt. And now I am paying rent which I avoided for two years & went shopping instead. In fact I used that excuse. I said to myself “Well this money would have went to rent anyways”.

Living in my car didn’t have me save for anything. It’s one of those harsh life lessons that I wish I could go back & change. I definitely have to start from rock bottom again. Now with debt.

One would think to be smarter or doing better. But addiction mean addiction. I don’t need a therapist, I just have to believe & change my behavior. I have to want to save & build up my finances!

But, at the same time, I never saw the point of working just to pay bills. I can get me a little, tiny, make-myself-feel-good-present budget & also put into savings what I spend. But the rising cost of rent, food & gas & credit card bills makes me fucking upset. You would think the restraints of those factors should help curve my spending. It doesn’t. I still get carried away & don’t save. But honestly, I can do better. I just need to do the best I can & push myself to be better.

CHAPTER 1 : 03/28/2023 ~ The Beginning

Well, let's be honest, while doing this short blog for y'all, I realized one thing.

The hardest part of writing is the title itself. Lol.

I just wanna introduce myself,

I am Angela Cortez, 25. Working in a BPO and Insurance Company at the same time. First job as well. Nagmamadali tayong yumaman kaya work hard muna bago work smart.

What's interesting about me is I already planned my whole life. I need a purpose so planning every details on my life each year like, how much money do I need for this year, what should I buy, what should I pursue, what should I learn to this specific month, what should I get and what should be my goal, is what I consider as interesting.

So if you want a purpose, make sure you have a ✨dream✨ to start with.

Speaking of START...

The hardest part of growing is the beginning of the growing process.

Yes, the START itself.

Because there's always an option to NOT start at all, correct?

Of course, we still don't know anything about the industry we sign up for, or the things we are going to face once we are there. We have an idea, but our mind and body is not ready for the process.

For example, you wanna ride a motorcycle. Well, if you don't know how to balance a bike, what more on a motorcycle, right? So, you will start in the beginning. Never ever, jump to riding the motorcycle immediately. Nakapadelikado n'yan, brad.

We are now going to try learning how to ride a bike without going off the balance. If you maintain the process, of course, we are already there. Balancing the motorcycle will be easier.

You will then realized, it's easier to ride a motorcycle than a bike. It's faster and doesn't have a pedal on it.

But, same as life. The easier it gets, the more expensive it is.

If you want an easy life, you'll be broke.

If you want to be financially free, you need to work hard.

Having a house.

Having a car.

Having the appliances you need.

The furnitures to make your house accommodating.

You cannot take it all at once in the beginning. This is going to be the ✨FRUIT✨ of your learning once you grab the opportunity to START AND LEARN.

It's not bad though.

It is one of things that protects us from people who have bad intentions.

It's also not bad to ask questions and do your research which is very important when you are being critical.

Being critical thinker is far from being a negative thinker!

Being critical means taking an analytical approach and examine everything, good and bad and neutral. It also means that we try to be more objective and use evidence to reach a valid conclusion. Being negative means seeing everything through a dark filter and only allowing one type of information to come through.

I once talk to someone who thinks she's being critical, welp. To the point of she's also critical about herself. When everything that she says is all negative, about herself and her surrounding and doesn't appreciate or consider positive reviews.

They are called pessimist.

They don't see the bright side of something.

But when you are critical, you feed your curiosity.

And that's me! Before I go somewhere, I always make sure that I already took a research / background check about the person I am meeting with or the place I am going to. It's important to know that you are talking to a real person or going to a real place!

And then second, making sure I also did research about the agenda.

Then for the ending of being critical, you as a person, decide for yourself.

It will always end with your decision.

Life is full of choices. Some are easy, such as what to have for dinner, and others, more serious, like, for instance, life, family, or choosing a career. People make decisions all throughout their day, most of which are straightforward and don’t require much thought. However, when situations are more complicated and have longer term impacts, it’s easy to feel unsure or hesitant. Regardless of how important a decision is, good decision skills are useful in life, especially if you feel indecisive about something and it’s getting you down.

CONSIDER PROS AND CONS

Look at the bigger picture. Write a list of pros and cons for each course of action and then compare them. Sometimes the cons aren’t nearly as bad as we imagine them to be, or the pros might make your options more obvious.

CONSIDER POSSIBILITIES

Making a decision can result in several different outcomes and not all of them may be obvious. When considering each option, don’t just list the positives and negatives; write down any likely consequences.

TALK TO SOMEONE

It can be helpful to get another person’s perspective on your issue, particularly if they’ve faced a similar decision in their own life. It's also important to someone you trust. It'll be a big help!

GOALS AND VALUES

It’s important to be true to ourselves and what we value in life. When you factor into a decision the things that are important to you, the best option might become obvious. At any rate, you���re more likely to end up with an outcome you’re happy with.

Your decision will dictate your future.

It's really hard, I KNOW. But there's no easy in this life if we have dreams.

Dreams don't work, unless you do.

I just wanna share this because I already started and this is the best decision I made so far✨

Manipulative Power hungry Aunt torments my family for years. Costs her $300000

Dealt with my shitty manipulative abusive Aunt all my life, finally got revenge.

Players: Myself (M late 30s), Sister (3 year younger), Aunt (Older "Sister" to my Mother), Mother (Single Mom, adopted, no blood relation to my Aunt). Cousins (3 total, 1M, 2F. I have good relationships with them now, mostly).

My estranged father who had been living several counties over, is pretty much out of the picture by the time my parents got their divorce when I was 9. Due to financial hardship, we were forced to live with my Aunt and the nightmare of a household we would soon find ourselves in. My Aunt married into Georgia "Wealth" and you can figure out what that means on your own. She had 3 kids and eventually caught her husband having an affair. It's a huge scandal, she gets the house, the kids and a fat payout from the family attorney. This is important because my Aunt didn't do a damn thing in her life to earn her money, her house, her lifestyle or basically anything. She was born poor along with my Mom.

Under her household, she was drunk with power. Years of therapy have allowed me to recognize that certain people when in a position of power, get a perverse pleasure in ordering others to do their bidding. She was the strictest of authoritarians in every possible way you could imagine. Chores had to be completed by an exact specific time. Vacuuming by 3:45pm, Dishes by 3:55pm, Laundry days for my Mother us kids were Tues/Thurs 5:35pm-7:55pm. If it was still running, she would shut the power off for the two units. As we grew older, her own kids opted to stay with their father for full time custody and she had them on Weekends. Even they couldn't stand her when she was in charge and in the house. As time passed, she got them less and less opting for alternating weekends as Highschool activities took precedence over time with Mother.

For my sister and I, the large 6 bedroom house was not ours for the taking. My mom had to pay rent as well as rent for 1 bedroom as that was all she could afford on her salary. We had to share a bedroom until my second year of HS. All the while there was 1 spare unused bedroom available at all times. My Aunt needed this for "Guests" when they stayed over. Not one guest stayed there in the 10 years I was under that roof. Finally the church we attended told my Aunt to give up the spare bedroom so my sister can have her own room as it was "unhealthy" for two teenagers sharing a room together like that. That infuriated my Aunt because someone told her what to do in her own household. My sister and I got the brunt of her wrath. As my Mom's salary was tapped out, my sister and I had do extra chores like mowing the lawn, trimming the shrubs, cleaning the pool which we could no longer use without her being outside watching us.

My Aunt's behavior was becoming more and more outrageous and disconnected from society. For example, she had always snapped her fingers when she wanted to get someones attention, but it was getting far more frequent and she would blow up into a tirade if either my sister and I didn't obey. Her own kids tried repeatedly to tell her that the shit she was doing was wrong but she wouldn't listen.Eventually they wanted nothing to do with her outside of the home. She was a tyrant there and repeated intervention to get her to see the folly of her ways would fall on deaf ears.

I Snapped:

All through HS I had no confidence as a person. I was weak willed and growing ever distant from friends and society. I say this in all truthfulness and fear, that had circumstances continued the way they had been going, I could very well had taken a gun to myself or worse, to others around me. I was that bad off.

I had just graduated HS and started my first semester of community college. I'm 2 weeks into my classes attending from home when my Aunt drops a bomb on me. "You owe me $$$ for this months rent, the same amount for next months rent as well. It is the 27th after all. You're an Adult now. You're out of HS and working now, so you need to pay rent" The fuck? I blew a fucking gasket as I yelled back. "You can't just suddenly decide to charge me rent just because you feel like it. I need 30 days notice, I have rights".

My Aunt yelled at me some bullshit excuse that she had discussed this with my mother and it was decided that I needed to pay my own rent now. In some miraculous backbone move, of which I still have no idea how I stood up to her, I yelled right back at her, "If I'm an Adult, then treat me like and talk to me about rental agreements. I'll start paying you rent in 30 days starting the 1st." I turned my back to her and walked away with my fists balled tight. I was furious with anger but I walked away. My Aunt saw my fists from behind and screamed bloody murder that I was going to attack her. No, I wasn't. She snapped her fingers at me repeatedly on my tail to get my attention but I didn't turn around. I needed to cool off and clear my head. As I turned the corner, she grabbed my wrist hard yelling "I'm not finished talking to you". I threw my still balled up fist forward keeping with my stride to break her grip as I hadn't stopped my momentum. This caused her grabbing arm to slam hard into the corner of the wall that I had just turned into. She screamed in pain but I left the house and took off.

The aftermath of that incident was that my Aunt called the cops on me in an attempt to press charges. She was taken to the hospital and suffered a fractured wrist and she was put in a cast/sling (don't know as I never saw it and never inquired further). Her story changed every time she told the cops what happened while my story was spot on every time. I can still recall that moment down to the smell in the house, where I was facing, the working and non-working lightbulbs etc. Forever ingrained in me. I was kicked out of the house and I couldn't visit my sister or my Mom there at the house again. Fine by me as I didn't want to see my bitch Aunt ever again. I was happy to meet my Mother and sister at the local diner or outlet. We could be ourselves there and not hostages in our own home.

Years Later:

My Mom wised up and got out of that abusive relationship with her sister and moved out on her own. She got a temporary nice place, invested wisely and with the help from the church, got help getting a place of her own. In 2009 after the housing crisis, she bought her own place that she could never have afforded on her own prior the Market crash. But some good came out of it. She wept knowing my Sister (and her family) and myself can come visit any time and stay.

Over the years I've been able to forgive my Aunt. Not forget, Forgive. I've let go a lot of my anger and hatred toward her that she put me through. When she has no leverage or control over us, she's a somewhat decent person for being a total bitch of a person. My Cousin's have calmed down, heard my side of what happened those years ago and know what kind of person I am compared to what kind of person their Mother is. They chose to believe me and know I didn't hit her or strike her or beat her across the face like she continues to claim.

The Revenge:

While I have been able to forgive my Aunt for what she has done to me, I cannot forgive her for what she did to my Mother. Kept her in financial hardship for a decade while she sat on a bank account full of cash and assets. Or what she did to my Sister. Forced her to pay for damages because the water heater burst while my Aunt and Mother was away one weekend leaving my sister at home. She didn't discover the flooded rooms for hours. My Aunt's reasoning, "It was her responsibility to watch the house." Not the responsibility of the home owner to maintain/replace the water heater before it goes. Lets leave that Upfront $5000 financial burden before the Flood insurance kicks in on a 16 year old girl.

I've had little to no contact with my Aunt since I was kicked out of the house nearly 2 decades ago. But I do keep in constant contact with my cousins. While I'm not going to divulge what I do for a living, I can say that I work with and for the Government. I've worked my ass off getting to where I'm at today. I'm known for being truthful, wise and giving good advise when asked. Because of this, I often talk financially with my cousins. All of whom are money-smart and are doing well for themselves. They often then relay this information to their scheming mother who has no mind for business and investments. All that money she got from her house sale, her divorce settlement, her previous investments is pretty much gone. I spent YEARS planning on the perfect trap and it took a long time to prepare everything to make sure everything appeared right.

IANAL and I don't pretend to know the law but I do know the regulations and laws pertaining to insider information. This is not that. 100% certain of it and if I ever go to court, I know my lawyer has a solid case in my defense. But is this a grey area, most definitely. I let slip to my Cousins about some future real estate plans near my Aunt's new area of living. It "may" be worth a lot more because of future development taking place in the area. All of that was true and backed up by what was in the News paper and New Construction signs that newly appeared on Google Maps (at the time). The rest was fabricated by myself backed up by actual information I looked up on real estate websites and on projects I was working on through my work.

The Telephone game takes place and a few weeks later I presume, my Aunt starts making phone calls to real estate agents trying to buy lots of Land in the undeveloped shitty area of her new house. Over the course of a few months to a half a year, she spends $300,000 of her last remaining savings on land hoping it will pay out when the area around it gets developed in the upcoming years.

Only, HUD/Government/City doesn't have any plans to develop in those immediate areas. In fact, analysis showed that building in those areas was poor planning and would cost the tax payers twice to three times as much as the land was not environmentally sound. It was best to build 6 miles away.

This post was long overdue because it's been over 2 years since my Aunt purchased Land that is basically worthless. See, she won't sell the land unless she gets at least the same price she paid for it because she's the OWNER of that land. Can't tell her what to do on her own land. Sweet Karma strikes in a way I couldn't possibly have foreseen. My cousin informed me that the value of the land has decreased significantly because it's not environmentally sound to build anything commercial there. But it's zoned for commercial use. Currently 3 of the 4 blocks of land she purchased are just weed farms next to eye sore abandoned buildings or industrial complexes. Nobody can build on it and nor does anyone want to buy it. Sucks to be her!

Best part is, my cousins have absolutely no idea that I set them up for their Mother to take the fall. These environmental results are relatively new and the perfect cover to say why the Project changed locations 6 miles away.

TL:DR Abusive Aunt torments my family and myself for a decade and more. Decades later, I am in a position to trick her buying worthless land. Icing on the cake, that land can't be used for it's intended purpose and has devalued significantly.

Home Buying

So, I often see a lot of posts on here and just in general online about the inaccessibility of buying a home, and yeah in general there’s a lot of problems with the way housing is set up in this country (I’m writing from the US), but I think a lot of people just kinda believe that they’ll never be able to buy a house without even knowing the tools that are available to them. I thought it was impossible a few years ago before I bought my house, and yeah I had a lot of luck on my side, but I almost didn’t even try because I thought it was actually impossible. I tried it because I was desperate and “the worst they can do is say no” and I was shocked at the amount of things I did not know about.

So I’m going to talk about two of the tools and tricks you might want to look into if you want to buy a house. It’s not going to work for everyone, and income and credit are still going to be large factors, but it might make home ownership seem a little more in reach. 

Before I give the tips, you’ve got to get yourself into a mindset to ask people questions. I got myself a realtor (which I highly recommend; they typically only get paid if you buy a house, and you can roll that into the closing costs, which I will discuss later). Between my realtor, my banker, google, and the older people in my life who had bought homes in the past, I must have asked like 4 kajillion questions. Knowledge is power. 

The first big tip deals with help if your credit is on the lower side or you can’t afford a huge down payment, and that’s FHA (Federal Housing Administration) loans. With one of those you can get your down payment as low as 3.5%. So that would mean if you’re buying a $100,000 home your down payment would be just $3,500, which I understand is not feasible for everyone, but is a lot more do-able than $20,000 (the typical 20% down I thought was necessary). Some conventional loans even go that low, though they are pickier about your credit. The big drawbacks of getting an FHA loan and/or doing a smaller down payment are 1) If your down payment is smaller then your loan amount is bigger, which means you will be paying more per month on your house and 2) If you get an FHA loan or put less than 20% down on your home you will have to pay mortgage insurance, which is an extra monthly expense (mine is about $100 a month, but depending on your credit, the market, and the amount on the loan it can vary A LOT). 

The second tip is something that can really decrease the upfront cost of buying a house, and that is negotiating for seller paid closing costs. More than anything this will save you SO MUCH MONEY upfront. Not every seller is willing to do this, and it often depends on their other offers and the market in general, but a lot of them will agree to it. When buying a house, there are a lot of miscellaneous costs and fees, like the deed transfer and the realtors and stuff, and that typically runs about $3000-5000. Seller paid closing costs means that the person selling the house pays this. When I put my offer on the house I later bought, I offered a couple grand less than the listing price with seller paid closing cost, and they countered with the listing price with seller paid closing, which was exactly what I was hoping for. 

There will be a couple expenses on your end that aren’t included in either the down payment or the closing cost. The main one I remember is the inspection (because your bank wants someone to inspect the home before they’ll be willing to shell out $100,000+ for a mortgage) which was a few hundred dollars. This can save you money though, because after the inspection, you’re allowed to renegotiate with anything they found (for example, the outlets in the kitchen were not up to code, so I told the sellers I wanted the fixed or a lower cost. They updated the outlets.) You also need to start paying home owners insurance and taxes, but typically your bank will create an Escrow Account for that, so it will be rolled into your monthly mortgage payments rather than being large annual payments 

Some bonus tips if you’re considering home buying and are currently renting: 

-Once you own your home you are responsible for all the maintenance for it. I highly recommend learning some DIY skills. This will save you a lot of money (at the expense of your time).

-Typically if you want the upfront home costs to be worth it, you need to live in your home for at least 5 years and keep somewhat on top of the maintenance, so if you move around a lot or have problems settling places, you might want to consider continuing to rent

-After you’ve bought your home, you can put extra money down on the principle of the loan at any point. This can add up and decrease your mortgage payments over time

I was just about ready to give up and head back to the hotel. I’ve spent 16 years being a sales representative across Southeast Asia, and I know all the regional variations on the prostitutes fairly well. Despite the hot and wet climate, I could feel a wall of heat radiating on my other side as one real furnace of a man stepped closer to me. I turned my head and looked right into a black tank top. It was filled with a huge pile of meat. I looked up at his face and he made a silent nod. I was thinking really hard on how this scam worked. Was this just going to trick me out of 5000 pesos, or was the end goal to take me for all I was worth? The setup was intriguing. without insuance (or insurance that covers your treatment), it’ll probably be cheapest to go to a sliding scale treatment location, like Planned Parenthood (if there is one in your area that offers HRT) or most LGBT+ clinics (just google the name of your nearest big city and LGBT Clinic).  for some people, it could mean taking a greyhound or driving a couple hours every couple months and that’s STILL cheaper than seeing a full-cost provider in their own town.  back when i was transitioning, nobody really did it in our city, but in Chicago they did (and offered informed consent- no therapy letters), so we would take a 25 dollar bus ride (or gather up friends and drive together), and get our appointments together then go home.  You can call these types of places (planned parenthood, lgbt clinics) to ask them to help you figure out what your estimated costs would be- they can give you paperwork that usually tells you based on your income what you’ll have to pay- but make sure you’re clear you want to know Everything you would have to pay, including labwork.

Hello again, here’s an update on my voice evaluation with the speech language pathologist I was referred to.

Before I go into details, let me just say the whole trip was disappointing for me. It might not be how everyone else interprets it, but I personally was underwhelmed and hoped for more.

Let’s start with what factually happened, and then I’ll go over my feelings on everything later.

What happened:

- I boarded a flight to LAX from SEATAC around 7 AM. We got into LAX at about 10 AM.

- I took a shuttle from LAX to their ride app (Uber and Lyft) pick-up lot and took a Lyft to the Peter Morten building at the UCLA medical plaza in Los Angeles. This is the building where my surgeon and the SLP operate.

- My appointment was at 3:30 PM, so I had a lot of time to kill. I went into the building where they asked me if I had any symptoms of COVID-19 and then took my temperature. Then I found the office I needed to go to, speech therapy on the 5th floor. 

- I went to a City Target nearby and got lunch and then I walked back to the Peter Morten building and ate it on a bench outside. Then, I walked to a botanical garden nearby and spent an hour and a half there just waiting.

- I walked back to UCLA and checked in by calling from outside the office first. 

- When it was time, I met the speech pathologist and went back into her office. She showed me a powerpoint she made about trans voices and figured out what my vocal range was by having me try my best to sing “Ooo” to keys she played on a piano app on her iPad. We briefly went over what I should be doing to practice a deeper voice.

- The session was an hour long and for the evaluation cost me $137, I got a 40% discount for paying in person.

- I went back to LAX and flew home.

Now, my feelings about everything. I’ll speak only about the voice evaluation, since it’s already obvious that navigating airports and walking around LA trying to kill time was shitty because of the current pandemic.

- I didn’t learn anything new. I’ve done extensive research about my voice and trans voices and didn’t hear any new information from the SLP.

- The SLP didn't take the time to get to know me. She didn't ask about my transition, my voice dysphoria, nothing. She basically filled out a form for my name, preferred pronouns, and then a silly question about my hobbies which has nothing to do with my voice (except gaming, which gives me a lot of dysphoria because I can't use voice chat on multiplayer games without getting misgendered).

- She told me that if I increased my T dosage, my voice would get deeper. Yes, even after being on T for 5 years. Not to mention the fact that her telling me this is medically irresponsible. I’ll just tell you guys now that experiencing a natural drop, like the “T cold” ones that every trans man experiences 3-5 months to a year after starting T, is impossible for me now. It started to become an impossibility after my first year on T and became completely out of the realm of possibility after my second year. I know this, my endocrinologist knows this, the SLP does not know this. When I expressed my skepticism, she said “you really think your voice won’t get deeper even after this long?” like it was an issue of lack of hope on my part. No, I just know it can’t happen naturally anymore. Sure, voice deepening with age is a thing for everyone, cis or trans, but I’m not waiting until I’m 60 years-old to finally sound like a 27 year-old man.

- The SLP explained to me that cis males get deeper voices during puberty if their T is higher, which corresponds to the fact that trans males who start out on lower doses of T tend to not have as dramatic voice drops as trans males who start out at a higher dose. I started out at 0.2mg but have friends who immediately started out at 0.5mg and developed deeper voices than I have now just after 3-5 months of starting T. I already knew this before she told me, but I thought I’d include it here just to educate anyone reading this.

- The SLP included a slide about vocal surgery as a means of changing voice for trans women in her powerpoint, but not one for trans men. The only slide she made as a means of changing voice for trans men was hormones. So if your voice didn’t get deeper with hormones, I guess you’re shit out of luck? The only reason I’m working with her in the first place is because I’m pursuing voice surgery. With a surgeon who works in the same building as her. I’m asking myself why she’s blatantly ignoring a possible means to change trans male voices. I feel she may have a personal bias against it, which I know sounds odd

- When I asked her how she decides how many sessions patients have with her before surgery, she told me it depends on how happy I am with my results. But she also kept pushing that I should stay in LA for 3-5 days and have two sessions every day. If it really is up to me, I don’t want any voice therapy sessions. I’m extremely unhappy especially after this evaluation. I don’t want to fly down and stay in LA during a pandemic and risk my life. Also, each hour-long therapy session costs $480 and I'm not throwing $5000+ at something that isn't working for me. This is something I’ll be calling about on Monday, I want a clear answer on what is required of me before I can get a surgery date. I’m sure there is a required amount of voice therapy sessions before we can even think about a possible surgery date, but neither the surgeon nor the SLP will be clear with me about it.

- No one told the SLP that I was paying out of pocket. She assumed she would be billing insurance. When I told her about this, she assured me that she doesn’t get my money directly so she wasn’t pushing the 3-5 day bootcamp therapy session idea to me because of that.

- She had me doing this voice (produced by lowering my larynx as if I’m about to yawn, which she agreed was the correct technique): https://clyp.it/2iuioklb that I’ve already tried practicing with for a number of months which ended up not working for me. When I expressed to her that I feel like it sounds and feels fake, like I’m just doing a “macho man” impression and that it doesn’t sound like a natural male voice, she wasn’t having it. She wouldn’t stop pushing it until I finally agreed with her that I liked how it felt and sounded (I still don’t). She wouldn’t listen to me and didn’t want to adjust her techniques to fit my concerns.

- The only thing she said that made me feel a little relieved was she pointed out that it appears that my higher range has been cut off but my lower range didn’t budge. I’ve pointed this out to friends and family before and I guess it felt good for a professional to say it to me. 

- I felt the SLP was undereducated about the subject she was tackling with me. It was clear she wasn’t open to the idea of learning from me, and that she’s never worked with a patient like me before. I’m sure I’ve been on T longer and I’m older than her previous trans masc patients. She treated me like a child, like she was the only one who knew what I wanted. 

I’m sure she has helped other trans masc patients before, enough to where they ended up not pursuing voice surgery, but she didn’t help me and I will definitely keep pursuing surgery. I’m extremely disappointed and I don’t want to work with any of UCLA’s SLPs anymore. It kind of feels like I'm trying to get a nose job done and the surgeon wants me to hire a masseuse to massage my nose several times over the course of a week in the hopes it'll just get smaller on its own. Voice therapy isn't going to work for me and I want a surgery date.

I’ll be updating again after I make a call to the voice therapy department, and the SLP herself, to let them know I’m unhappy and want a clear answer on what is required of me to get a surgery date.

In their ACLU report, “Cracks in the System: Twenty Years of the Unjust Federal Crack Cocaine Law,” Deborah J. Vagins and Jesselyn McCurdy noted that The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986:

…established mandatory minimum sentences for federal drug trafficking crimes and created a 100:1 sentencing disparity between powder and crack cocaine. The Act provided that individuals convicted of crimes involving 500 grams of powder cocaine or just 5 grams of crack(the weight of two pennies) were sentenced to at least 5 years imprisonment, without regard to any mitigating factors. The Act also provided that those individuals convicted of crimes involving 5000 grams of powder cocaine and 50 grams of crack (the weight of a candy bar) be sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

Race was not explicitly written in the 1986 law. Otherwise, it would have been easier to combat it, such as in the Supreme Court case of Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka.

Still, what makes this law racist? During the 1980s and 1990s, the United States experienced a rise in crack cocaine, which became widely associated with Black people, particularly in working poor urban communities. On the other hand, powder cocaine was associated with affluence and particularly, white people.

By heavily penalizing “crack” versus “powder cocaine” the federal laws targeted racial groups without naming it.

In their study, “Powder Cocaine and Crack Use in the United States: An Examination of Risk for Arrest and Socioeconomic Disparities in Use,” Palamar, Davies, and associates explained:

Compared to whites, racial minorities were at low risk for powder cocaine use, and Hispanics were at low risk for crack use. Blacks were at increased risk for lifetime and recent crack use in unconditional models, but this association was lost when controlling for all other socioeconomic variables. Therefore, it appears that blacks are in fact at higher risk for crack use and associated outcomes, but this may be driven by socioeconomic factors—suggesting that SES may be a fundamental cause of racial disparities in crack use. In the conditional models for lifetime use, higher educational attainment was associated with increased likelihood of powder cocaine use and decreased likelihood of crack use, and higher income was associated with decreased likelihood of crack use.

Despite socio-economic factors, for decades, Black people were tied to a narrative of crack cocaine and white people were linked to powder cocaine. In 2003, although over 66% of U.S. crack cocaine users were white or Latino, Black people made up more than 80% of the convictions under the federal crack cocaine laws (Vagins and McCurdy, 2006).

Structural racism in a colorblind nation looks like Black people serving as much time in prison for drug offenses (58.7 months) as white people convicted of violent offenses (61.7 months) (Vagins and McCurdy, 2006). The incarceration approach to the drug epidemic that was disproportionately enforced on African-Americans ruled the day until 2010, when President Obama changed the sentencing from 100:1 to 18:1.

Presently, as the nation deals with a drug epidemic that is not popularly associated with African-Americans, our government has miraculously seen the racial white light in their approach. Instead of criminalizing, targeting, and heavily penalizing people with opioid addictions with mandatory minimums, there has been a broader appeal to sympathy and treatment.

The narratives give a backstory where the people tend to come from “good” families who are victims of structures beyond their control—targeted by the “evil” large pharmaceutical corporations.

They receive reparations for their victimhood in the forms of taxpayer supported treatment and settlements against pharmaceutical companies.

Despite all of these changes and talk of treatment, Black people are still targeted with an incarceration approach.

Bad Black Mothers and Vulnerable White Girls

I recall a different narrative from the United States’ War on Drugs. I recall the media working over-time to dehumanize Black mothers and families crippled by drug dependency and the disproportionate over-policing and heavier penalties. The media helped shape a narrative to shame and justify the lack of empathy and investment in treatment/care.

Sensationalized media portrayals about Black mothers on crack given birth to a new generation of crack babies out of wedlock sought to reinforce stereotypes and controlling narratives of inherent cultural deficiency among African Americans.

Bad Black mothers and fathers who use and deal crack were a plague to society to be controlled and destroyed. One day, as I was watching television, I saw a commercial focusing on the opioid crisis about “Amy’s Story” from Truth Initiative. On their website, they share part of her story:

When Amy was 14, a knee injury on the soccer field put her in the hospital and resulted in a prescription for Vicodin. Over the next five years, she endured several surgeries on that knee and received a flood of opioid prescriptions.

In this vulnerable state, Amy developed an addiction to Vicodin. When her supply ran out, she took drastic measures to get more. She started relying on self-harm to secure prescriptions for opioids. She would cut herself and smash her injured knee. At age 18, she reached the peak of her desperation. In hopes of getting more pills, she intentionally crashed her car into a dumpster at over 40 miles per hour…

The framing of the story signals virtues by which Amy is worthy of treatment and care. Amy gets the benefit of being young and innocent that more easily happens for white youth compared to Latino and African-American youth. She played soccer, became injured, “endured” surgeries, and received a “flood” of highly addictive pain drugs in her “vulnerable” state. In other words, Amy was a “good kid” who was a victim to a system out of her control. She was not portrayed as a culturally deficient junkie from a broken home who needed to take responsibility and be locked away from society.

Was Amy heavily penalized for possible insurance fraud, reckless driving, and destroying property?

Where was the public service campaign featuring a 14-year-old African-American girl in the 1990s who turned to recreational drugs to numb her pain and stole property to generate money to buy more? She had to be responsible and not a victim.

Young African-American girls do not tend to get funded national media narratives about being “vulnerable” with a dominant narrative that inextricably connects Blackness with innocence, not until a social issue impacts white middle-affluent youth. The National Women’s Law Center found that Black girls in every state in the United States are more than twice as likely to be suspended from school than white girls, and it is not because they misbehave more.

Overall, Black girls are over 5.5 times more likely to be suspended from school ad 2.5 times more likely to be expelled without educational services than white girls.

To their credit, Truth Initiative shares stories of individuals from diverse backgrounds to show that opioid addiction can impact anyone. Also, they have committed to creating a culture where all youth and young adults live free of tobacco. According to their website, Truth Initiative’s “20 years of lifesaving work has prevented millions of young people from becoming smokers — including 2.5 million between 2015 and 2018 — and helped drive down the youth smoking rate from 23% in 2000 to 4.6% in 2018.”

Nevertheless, the stories selected seem to appeal to dominant White middle-affluent definitions of worthiness of empathy. For example, Truth Initiative features the story of Chris, who can be visually identified as Black and possibly male. He experimented with opioids as a teen, after discovering his mother’s prescription pills in her medicine cabinet.

Later, after being injured on a job, he became addicted. This narrative has more marketing appeal in a colorblind racist society, for one about an unemployed Black man doing drugs for the sake of fun becoming addicted will not bode as well.

Examples of other stories include diverse youth taking drugs to cope with the stresses of school and being an overachiever or developing an addiction after being prescribed opioid painkillers after an injury. These narratives make the opioid crisis something that is not inherently a white problem and justify the need to support a treatment (instead of a heavy-handed incarceration) approach to the epidemic.

By doing so, White middle and affluent class mothers are spared the over-sensationalized news reports of their poor parenting. White fathers are not deadbeats because their children become dependent.

They are victims just as much as their children.

These same kinds of humanizing stories about opioid dependency could have been promoted during the years of the crack cocaine epidemic.

White mothers are spared from being essentialized by the media as broken sources of our social ills. They do not have to deal with the stereotypes of being welfare queens who give birth to crack or heroin babies.

Within a white supremacist society, there is a wrongfully assumed moral superiority connected the white race that denigrates certain Women of Color and uplifts white women in times of crisis.

A greater attempt exists to show that the opioid addiction is not a reflection of white cultural deficiency and that such drug dependence is not the result of some inherent racial flaw.

It is a fact that countless Black and Latino folks have been saying for years. When drug dependency was explained away on the flawed basis of our supposed cultural and even biological inferiority, numbers of people across race pushed back against the narrative to little to no avail.

Silence about the resulting racial devastation that still occurs from the racist approaches to handling drug epidemics further exacerbates the long-standing problem. Any person and organization dedicated to drug dependency and treatment have to contend with the deeply entrenched racist realities of how empathy and sympathy have a clear racial hierarchy in the social imaginations of U.S. individuals and enforcement of laws.

Many people might believe that we sympathize and empathize the same across race. The sad reality is that a blond hair teenage white girl who plays soccer will garner more empathy (and financial support) than an African-American teenage girl who drove her car into a dumpster like Amy to get more drugs.

Consequently, the use of Black people’s stories of drug dependency within this current colorblind framing of drug epidemics helps to further manipulate the greater public into ignoring decades of the adverse effects of racist drug laws and practices involving African Americans.

Is it just to pretend none of it happened? Is it just to ignore the long-lasting impact—the generational consequences? Is it empathetic to ignore that due to our racist drug laws and practices, that approximately twenty years ago, the United States had more Black men in prison than in college?

It is unsympathetic and unempathetic to point out these truths?

No.

It is possible to empathize with individuals like Amy, Chris, and their families and simultaneously address and hold accountability the legalized oppression that has been long ignored and condoned by the much of society.

To put it bluntly, it is sleazy, uncaring, underhanded, and racist use empathy to turn this matter into choosing between either to focus on the opioid epidemic or the handling/residual impact of the crack epidemic. It is a low-down attempt to escape any accountability and is the same tired melody about how racism works in this country.

This matter is a “both/and” issue desperately begging for resolution.

Signs, Frames and Ibu-fu*%king-profen

I saw signs of the emerging opioid crisis and the changing language approaches to “drug epidemics.” Here and there, I noticed that even local law enforcement talked about the epidemic in different way-less war and criminalizing to a greater ethic of care. It was a change for the better, and yet it was not better.

When they discussed treatment approaches for one group, did they forget about the others they locked away after criminalizing their addiction?

Signs in the Suburbs

Years ago, I was in a southern city with my husband, waiting in line at a restaurant that was a local and tourist favorite. In front of us were a group of African-American women, all friends on a girls’ trip from another part of the state. As they laughed and talked, I slowly became part of the conversation.

Two of the women had careers in the healthcare industry. Their voices lowered in the way as if keep a secret from the surrounding white people. They began discussing their observations about the drug addiction and use back home.

The middle class and wealthy white youth and adults were increasingly being affected by the opioids “White kids in the suburbs were dropping dead,” as one woman put it. White people were growing concerned and now they are looking for ways to help and treat them.

The mood became heavy with something that was not being said-a history revisited each of us. 1986 never went away. This part of the conversation also became a social test, for the women gave each other knowing looks and looked at me to determine if I was a Black woman who “got it.”

I got it.

In that moment, there was this shared knowing, as one woman looked off.

Another shook her head.

Then, one of the women in medicine, gave voice to what we seemed to thinking and only expressing on our contorted faces and changed countenances.

“They didn’t care about treating us. They were locking us up. When it is a white kid in the suburbs, now there is government money for programs and treatment.”

By “us,” she means the Black community.

As for the “they”—Again, 1986.

My stomach tightened. I was noticing the rhetoric, and I had not talked about it with anyone, yet. I was wondering if it was just me—or my imagination, as I watched the gentle crafting and shifting of the drug addiction narrative in a way that garnered sympathy and financial support for white people and used the same appeal for sympathy to ignore years of lack of it towards African-American people.

The story of “learning from the past” to move to a treatment approach became a tool to racially whitewash a host of atrocities against People of Color.

I wanted my suspicions to be wrong.

She confirmed it.

Organizing the trip

If the events you'll be going to are in the same city as the one you're travelling to, it'll probably be very easy to organize everything, but if you have to move around or go to more than one live, you'll have to look for transport, acommodation, food, etc., so I've made this guide sharing a bit of my experience in case it is useful for someone when they are organizing their own trip.

Transport

Even though it's possible to buy a JR pass, which enables us to take any JR trains, some metro lines and some buses for the period we get it for, we thought it was a bit too expensive. Also, once activated, you have to use it in a certain period of time (that is to say, if you have a 7-day pass, you can't use it on 7 random different days, it will last exactly for a week since you first used it). However, it's true that travelling on train is really comfortable and fast, so if you don't mind spending a little bit more, maybe this option is worth it for you. Thinking that the tickets had been already quite expensive, we tried to look for other alternatives and we found a bus company, Willer, that offers passes for more affordable prices. There is a 3-day pass, a 5-day pass and a 7-day pass, but they don't have to be consecutive days, you have a few months when you can use them any time. Depending on the dates you'll be travelling, you can also get a discount: if you travel only from Monday to Thursday, passes are cheaper. Each day you use the pass, you can take up to 3 day buses and one night bus. After checking our live plan, we chose the 5-day pass including weekends. Also, we always took night buses, so we could sleep on the bus and save some money from the hotel. Night buses usually leave between 10 pm and 12 pm from Tokyo's city center and arrive at the destination around 7 am, so it's possible to use the rest of the day to go sightseeing. Plus, busses are adapted, so seats are more comfortable, they have a thing to cover your head in case you want more privacy, they have lockets to charge your electronic devices, etc. They'll also make a few stops and you can get off the bus to buy something or use the bathroom at the service area.

However, we didn't go to every live by bus, so I'll briefly explain our travel plan:

Bus to Sendai (July 5th) - Day 1 of the bus pass // Live at Sendai // Night at Sendai (July 6th) and train to Utsunomiya (July 7th) // Live at Utsunomiya // Train to Tokyo (July 7th)

As you can see, the last two trips Tokyo-Osaka-Tokyo weren’t included in the bus pass and I had to buy them separately, but doing that by train can be around 15000 yen, while it was only 5000 yen by bus. For Saitama, since it's only half an hour from Tokyo, you can easily get there by train for around 500 yen. On the other side, since the lives at Sendai and Utsunomiya took place one after the other, we decided to spend the night at Sendai and go directly from there to Utsunomiya (it's half-way between Sendai and Tokyo). In any case, Willer doesn't have buses from Sendai to Utsunomiya, so going by bus wasn't even an option. At first, we thought that it was possible to take local trains, which are slower and, therefore, cheaper, but when we arrived to the train station we were told that there were only shinkansen (bullet train). When you buy your tickets, it's possible to choose a carriage with reserved or unreserved seats. We chose the latter because it was a bit cheaper and, since the train had such a high frequency (maybe it's just that it wasn't rush hour, I don't know), there were a lot of empty seats, so we could sit down. If you look for information about the tickets and timetables online on Hyperdia (you can only check, you can't buy tickets), it might be understood that the price of the tickets will be the one that pops up when you select your seat type.

However, it isn't like that, to that amount on that menu, you have to add the base price that is written in the "fare" column (then, if we choose an unreserved seat, it won't be 3530 yen, but 8040). You can probably picture our faces when the lady selling the tickets told us the actual price. In order to go back to Tokyo from Utsunomiya, there are local trains, so you can choose between going on a bullet train (40 minutes more or less) or take one of those local trains (an hour and a half), which are also a lot cheaper (1500 yen one-way).

Acommodation

As I mentioned before, we were travelling on night buses so we didn't have to pay for a night at a hotel. However, we did have to stay for one night at Sendai. The original plan was to not spend a cent on acommodation and just find any way to spend the night there, but when we arrived to Sendai we saw that it wasn't that simple. At first, we thought that, being summer, since it's hot in Japan, we could just stay at a park or something. But rainy season was a bit longer that year and, once there, it was raining and cold. Since we couldn't stay in the open, we tried to find a place to stay. We thought that, since konbini are open 24 hours and some have an area with sofas or seats to eat, we could just stay there. This might sound like a good idea, but in fact that area will be closed by 11 pm, probably to avoid people doing what we were planning to do. Therefore, now out of options, we finally faced the fact that we would have to look for a real acommodation. Being only one night, we didn't mind sharing the bathroom or bedroom, so we ended up choosing a hostel that was 2000 yen per person. In case someone goes to Sendai and wants to stay there, it was the Sendai Guesthouse Umebachi. It is a traditional house, rooms are for four people and the bathroom was shared (there were two showers, but they are closed so no one will see you). In the mornings they offer coffee, milk and toasts, so we could grab some food before leaving. Plus the staff speaks English. The only problem we encountered was the bed, since it was a futon. It was okay at first, but not being used to sleeping on a hard surface and given that the sun rises early and there are no window blinds, we were already awake at 5:30 am.

Food

Depending on your budget, you can either go to restaurants or find cheaper options. Among those, konbini food is okay. For 300-400 yen there are premade dishes (and they are surprisingly yummy), but for 100-200 yen there are sandwiches, small bento boxes (with omelette, chicken, sushi, etc.) and onigiri (the tuna and mayo one is a hard drug). If you buy cup ramen, you can ask them to prepare it for you, and you can also ask them to heat the premade dish you've picked. If you go to restaurants, there are some Japanese fast food chains, like Yoshinoya, CoCoIchi or Tenya, but I admit we just went in whatever place we found, be it a konbini, restaurant or fast food chain. If it helps, we found out about some traditional food from different cities and I can link to some restaurants we went to, in case someone wants to go to the same place.

Tokyo: Our criteria to pick restaurants was completely random, but we went to some that we liked. In Asakusa, at Kaminarimon Maruka we had some cold noodles. In Shibuya, we ate at a sushi restaurant, Uobei. It is not the best sushi ever, but it's okay and cheap (it will arrive to your seat on a conveyor belt), and in Shinjuku we went to a yakiniku restaurant, Rokkasen. In Ikebukuro, even though it's a chain, we went to Tonkatsu Wako. I love tonkatsu, and the rice, cabbage and miso soup are "refillable", so you could ask for more, it was awesome.

Sendai: There was a restaurant near the hostel that they recommended to us. It is quite small, but the owners were nice and they were fascinated about us being there. The staff doesn't speak English, but they asked if yakitori and sashimi were okay (I loved the sashimi), and we ate that. Some salarymen found us entertaining and ordered typical dishes from Sendai for us to try. I don't remember what the first two were, although one was some kind of oyster and the other one was fish, but the third one was fried tofu (I remember because it was super dry and I didn't like it, but the other two were good).

You have different options and prices, depending on the period you want it for, the number of GB, etc. You can order them online, before starting your trip, or just get them already in Japan, since there are shops at the airport where they'll install it for you.

A comprehensive guide to getting out of homelessness/poverty.

Introduction.

Before we begin, know that this is going to suck. It's not going to be quick, and this is likley going to take 1 year or longer. Anyone who tells you otherwise I selling something.

If you want a get rich quick scheme, you're in the wrong place. This is going to take real work. You will have to go outside, you will have to talk to people, you will have to make decisions and sacrifices you won't like. Believe what you want, it will not change what is true.

Now that that's over, let's move on.

Step 1. The mailing address.

Never underestimate the power of mail. There are a few options here. Obviously if you already have one, you'll want to use that. Otherwise, mailing addresses for public use can be found in homeless shelters, recourse centers, and some food banks. A mailbox service like FedEx or UPS is ideal if you don't have a roof, otherwise, asking a trusted friend or relative would be your best bet.

Step 2. Food.

If you're in a shelter, this problem is already solved. That being said, it's best if you apply for food stamps, cash assistance as soon as you complete step 3. Otherwise, go to your local soup kitchen, food bank, assistance center, church, all of these places generally have recourses available.

Step 3. Identification.

Some cities (Like new York or Washington DC) have their own identification program. IDNYC (new York) was set up to help the homeless obtain residency and meet eligibility requirements. It's advisable that you obtain identification as quickly as possible.

If you need your birth certificate, your best option is Vitalcheck. This company will obtain and ship to you your birth certificate, marriage records, and any other records you might need.

Step 4. Work

The gig economy is a beautiful thing. Don't underestimate. best possible option for those of you with identification and mailing address is uber eats/Postmates, these delivery style jobs can be done on foot.

Failing that, most cities/states have, in one form or another, a recycling program. Find a center, find out who sells by quantity, not by weight. Collect and bring as many cans, bottles, recyclable containers as you possibly can. On a good day, one can easily make $20-$60, more so on federal holidays.

Step 5. Savings. Regardless of the circumstance, you're going to need a way to save the money you can save. After paying what you need to pay, find a lock box or some other lockable means of keeping your money safe. I recommend a virtual bank that way you'll never have to carry cash. Many banks have accounts without fees, and prepaid bank cards are literally everywhere. For the next step, you'll need a minimum of $200

Step 6. Education.

While you're doing deliveries, it's best to educate yourself to a better position.

My advice: ALWAYS start with your states notary public system. Learn it, and get your liscence. Not only is this likley to be useful to your employers, It's crazy easy to get your notary public liscence, and of the 5 or 10 states that require a test, only 1 is of any difficulty. Using your savings from the previous step, pay any applicable fees, and get yourself a notary liscence, stamp, a 3 ring binder, affidavits and notary public record sheets. Check your states laws for pricing information, then add $20 for travel/equipment fees. Many notary's make $100 per signing charging specifically for travel.

Once you have that, you'll need to save $5000 for the next step.

Step 7. Higher education.

This is where the fun begins. Many online programs have career certificates and college programs which allow you to pay monthly on your tuition. Once that tuition is completely paid off, you recieve your certification/diploma. You'll want to pay off your tuition as quickly as possible.

Find 3-5 career or diploma certifications that overlap with each other. A security guard liscence is impressive, but having a P.i career certificate, a criminal law degree and a notary public liscence on top of the security guard liscence is even more impressive. Most likley gets you paid more as well.

This logic can be applied to any feild of work. If you're trying to get work on a cruise ship, obtaining certification for culinary arts, bartending, hotel management and hospitality, will do you better than just getting one or two on their own.

Do not move on to step 8 until AFTER you have all the necessary certifications, diplomas, liscencing and dirivitives thereof, physically in your possession.

Step 8. Higher employment.

Once you have the necessary proof of education, make your resume. List all of your certification and diplomas, as well as any other skills you may have picked up. Employers like a multi useful employee, and having numerous certifications/liscenced can help you get a pay bump, or at the very least, help you look more attractive to your companies competition.

Step 9. Semi permanent shelter.

Congrats, you've clawed your way here. Wasn't easy was it?

Now's the part where you get yourself semi permanent shelter. Car, SUV, campervan, anything that you can both drive and sleep in. Doesn't have to be fancy or fast, it just has to travel to the next 4 states over. That's it. Doesn't matter what it is, as long as you can park and sleep near your place of work. Cooking/bathing inside of it would also be a plus, but is not necessary.

If you have the option to rent a vehicle for 30 days or longer, consider getting a non owner policy for your insurance.

Step 10. Perminant shelter.

Finding yourself an apartment can be a difficult task. But worth it. Save yourself $5000 before attempting this. Alternatively, you can buy a cheap plot of land and park your vehicle, perhaps build a small home with the help of a professional.

Conclusion.

Well wasn't that a pain! Well worth it though, wasn't it? Obviously some of you may already have some of this, but that doesn't mean you can't accomplish the rest. These steps don't have to be done in the order they are presented, but it wouldn't hurt.

So, I’m on a new med. It was FDA approved in AUGUST of this year, and insurance doesn’t cover it yet. It retails for $5000. They’re giving to me free, in what I call “open beta” and my husband says, “They’re doing it for the exposure!” Which, given how fast-tracked many drugs are these days for FDA approval, is pretty much exactly the case.

A friend said, “I just don’t like my friends being medical guinea pigs.”

My response? “Someone’s gotta.”

Medical meandering behind the cut.

I’m not normally an early adopter. It took me until 2014 to move from an old style cell phone that I usually didn’t bother putting minutes on, to an actual smartphone. I tend to buy my phones 2 years out of date, and my computers anywhere from 6 months out of date to 8 years out of date, depending on who they’re for. (The 7 year old gets an 8 year old WIndows 7 refurb desktop that I can stuff my old RAM and hard drives into. I get a reasonably new laptop with a good graphics card, but at least 6-12 months off the current “better”.)

But my kid was diagnosed with a rare chromosome condition at the age of 7 weeks and we were told that the chance of dying in 2 years was 70% and that there were no treatments, and that she wouldn’t develop language. And she’s 14 and has thousands of words and we experimented for YEARS with supplements to get there in ways that would let us avoid things like antipsychotics and constant doses of a variety of other drugs with serious side effects... and it worked. She doesn’t get sick often, she doesn’t get seizures, she has no kidney issues, she has language, she sleeps at night without powerful sedatives, and maybe we’ll need more meds for her at some point but the experiments were done VERY carefully, and always with an eye to her best interest and well being. Her fucking life was at stake. Her ability to interact with the world on her terms was at stake. OF COURSE we experimented. 

And at 42, I was diagnosed with EDS, after already having fibro, and 7 years later I have rheumatoid arthritis of a variety that comes with a really poor prognosis because my RA factor and involved joints # was so astronomically high when I was first diagnosed, just 2 months after symptoms appeared. (584 for RA factor, and 27 involved joints, probably liver involvement by my guess, and since 2017 I’ve also had a bout of drug induced lupus, so that’s fun*.)

There are a lot of drugs out there for RA. People with “mild” RA may start out on methotrexate or plaquenil and have a great result and not need to look any farther for 15-30 years. 

But my immune system is bitchy as hell. Once you go through things like steroids or NSAIDS, and methotrexate or leflunomide, and they don’t work enough, the next step is called Biologics. These are complex proteins which because of something something garbanzo, make the body dial down the inflammation by suppressing some specific part of immune function. When you quash tumor necrosis factor, for example, it pushes down inflammation all the way down the line, so it’s pretty much like hitting a china cabinet with a hammer.

Only, the china cabinet fights back if given half a chance. 

So I tried half a dozen TnF inhibitors, and they varied from eh to okay. None were completely useless, the only one which seemed pretty okay, I had to go off of for surgery. And when I went back on it? My immune system had decided that the complex protein was the Enemy, and freaked the fuck out.  So I went on Xeljanz, which inhibits a different part of the immune system, and a couple of great things happened, like 3 weeks of increasing energy and reduced pain, an ongoing reduction of pain, and some of my hair grew back.  And then the immune suppression side effects hit. Namely, I get infections ALL the fucking time. It’s like whack a mole. Deal with the bacterial infection, get a fungal infection. Deal with the fungal infection, get shingles. Deal with that, get fungal infection again (because the meds don’t play well together.) I was off Xeljanz for a whopping 12 hours the other day, and TWO sources of ongoing difficult just magically cleared up, as my immune system reestablished itself. 

ALL of these drugs, even the ones that have been around for a while, have huge black box warnings about things like “This can make you more likely to die of infection, cancer or pulmonary embolism. They can destroy your liver and make your hair fall out.” All of them.

And yet, when I went on methotrexate for the first time, which made me feel like absolute shit and made some things worse...

My liver enzymes improved. Methotrexate is ACTUALLY hepatoxic, but you know what’s also hepatoxic?

My OWN fucking immune system, apparently. We’ve never done a biopsy, because blood thinners and high clotting risk even without all this bullshit going on, but yeah, I was showing signs of gland and organ autoimmune issues YEARS before my joints got in on the party. Anyway, my liver enzymes aren’t great right now, which is part of why we switched me. 

So, someone’s got to try these things out, and it’s not like they’re going to find someone else with my exact constellation of bizarre genetics and wonky immune and collagen issues. 

I’ve taken two pills. Their retail would be $166 each, which is probably significantly more expensive than its weight in gold. (pills on average are about half a gram, give or take, and gold is $47-ish per gram right now.)

I don’t feel a lot better yet, but these take time. I also don’t feel worse, which is encouraging. We’ll see.
