This ask is fascinating to me and I have SO MANY QUESTIONS. Imma disect your comment like a lil bug real quick, if that’s okay with you?

If it doesn’t affect me why did you tell me? Like what was the purpose of telling me that you find me annoying? What validation does that give you?

Like you took all that time and effort to 1) seek out my blog 2) read enough of my posts to come up with a REALLY REALLY GOOD BURN LIKE WOW THAT IS SO CLEVER 3) Click on the ask button 4) write this comment 5) CHANGE THE FREAKING FONT- Like you went through the whole process of highlighting that line of text, clicking the “minimise” AND the “strikethrough” buttons and THEN 6) pressing send and you didn’t stop to think ONCE “hey… why the hell am I doing this?”

It always baffles me when people tell me these things like they think I’m not already painfully aware of it. Like I know that I’m annoying to some people THAT’S WHY I’M HERE!!! I have found the one community of people that find what I’m saying interesting!

I’m not posting for YOU I’m posting for THEM. You think I give a shit what you think about me? Are you THAT self-centred? Maybe my posts aren’t tailored to you, and that’s fine! Not everyone is making content specifically for your consumption, and might just be marketing to a different audience. If you’re not pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down, that’s okay. Maybe I’m just not putting it down for your specific needs.

You know, before I joined Tumblr, a comment like this would have sent me SPIRALLING. But now I’ve realised that there is actually a place and a people to whom I am entertaining. I just gotta find the right audience.

One of my favourite inspirational quotes ever is by Einstein and it’s that “everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree, it would think itself an idiot” or words to that effect. Yeah- my talent for spinning Leo Valdez round my brain like a candy-floss machine until it eventually turns into content isn’t necessarily “fun at parties” or useful for getting a job or good for… y’know… anything applicable to the Real World™️ but here I’ve found where I CAN put it to good use! And a year ago I didn’t have that.

Before Tumblr, my lil fishy body was struggling ‘er way up that tree. Here, I’ve found my ocean!

Not sure where this metaphor is going in relation to the topic of you finding me annoying… I guess fish me doesn’t feel like such an “idiot” now that I’ve found where I belong? Like I know that my talents are niche but SOMEONE likes ‘em. Actually quite a lot of people like ‘em, judging by my follower count. And I didn’t get this far by just having a cute cat pic as my pfp, but by actually building my skill and working hard! And I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. SO FUCK YOU!!! HUZZAH!!!

In all seriousness, I like how self-aware you are that you’re being prejudiced and jealous. And I’m kinda curious as to what specifically you’re jealous of? But that’s just to boost my own ego.

I’m aware that I can be a little intimidating sometimes, particularly in a written form of socialisation. I like grammar, okay? I like rules and guidelines and careful, creative choices to show emotion and how you can break the rules in certain ways to give depth and nuance to the character and find the pattern of letters and characters to communicate what you’re feeling over a written format and-

If you couldn’t tell by all the fanfics I write- I also have a passion for writing.

Also, what specific prejudices? I’m genuinely intrigued. Is it specifically based off of one of the protective characteristics (under the 2011 Equality Act)? Or is it more just the way I behave? Or is it something I said? Like don’t be shy I don’t want vague I want DETAILS!!

And I realise that me writing a whole freaking dissertation on your comment just PROVES your point that I’m annoying but I. Don’t. Care. I’m having fun. I can’t help that I have a lot of Thoughts And Feelings about things. It’s just how my brain works. Also, it is currently 1:23am where I live, so brain go brrr. And I know that that was… intense, to say the least. Oh BOY do I know that I can be intense. But genuinely- GENUINELY- I’d love to sit down and have a discussion with you on this because it truly fascinates me how other people perceive me. And, if you’re comfortable coming out of anon (if not, that’s fine) I’d like to learn more about why you think these things. Not necessarily so that I can change- but it’d be a great opportunity to see what I can learn about myself through what you think at me. I know it seems like I’m mad- I’m really not! I’m just captivated by the world and how others look at me.

That's right!

Adrian plays absolutely everyone for a fool the entire season. Like I said, everything he does is to serve his own needs and ulterior motives, and he's great at covering his tracks which doesn't help the others not figuring out his bad intentions until it's far too late.

I don't know how much you've maybe seen or not seen so I wanna try and explain this without spoiling anything just in cast which is kinda difficult since context is very important, so forgive me if it seems like I'm glossing over stuff, but an example is at one point in the season he points the J-Squad in a particular direction which is helpful, but he only does that so they can go first and attract all of the attention so he can sneak through and conduct his own investigation and espionage without incident. He also pretends to be helpful to the group while he's actually sneaking off to cover his own tracks and hide his involvement in things and comes back making excuses so nobody gets suspicious of him, basically he'll do anything to get himself ahead and serve his own underhanded intentions while making himself appear as if he's one of the good guys as long as possible so the J-Squad won't inhibit his progress.

Ultimately he's a manipulator or both people and situations, which is very dangerous conceptually, and he leans more consistently on manipulating the situation.

But without spoiling it just in case, that murder I mentioned? His manipulation of people in full force for that.....

That's a very general as spoiler free as possible explanation just in case, but if you want the full spoiler explanation feel free to bug me for it depending on your stance on spoilers of course, and I'll gladly divulge the tea ☕ since like I said I don't know how much of gx you've seen or haven't and I don't wanna just assume y’know? 😅

A disapproving huff sounded from Jinx’s bunk. Classic Ekko. He was being a total copycat through and through. Why had he gone all twinkly-eyed about it? Like them both having their heads screwed on backwards was another pointless club he’d just gotten the great big idea for. Jinx wanted to stomp her heels into the ground until he finally got the message: this wasn’t good. None of it was!

You’re confused.

Well, so are you!

Great- so we’re both confused. Wanna hold hands?

If she’d rolled her eyes any harder, Jinx was certain she’d have caught a glimpse of her brain. A stubborn line set itself along her jaw as she glowered towards the ceiling, contemplating just how much patience she had for another game of Peacekeeper. She’d never really been much good at that one.

"Well, it's your choice. I'm not here to make you do stuff you don't wanna do."

Was he TRYING to annoy her?!

A reflexive growl slid through Jinx’s teeth before she had the chance to catch it. It was starting to get harder and harder to lay still as Ekko droned on- tediously dancing around whatever point he was trying to make. Whatever he was saying, it wasn’t quite enough for the discomfort of chewing on her lip to drown out.

“Oh sure, you’d HATE to make me do stuff I don’t wanna do.” The dry retort tumbled out. She’d wanted to hold her tongue but Ekko made it so hard! Jinx couldn’t help herself.

“I stay in here because it’s fun! I rub shoulders with Firelights because I like making a difference!” She pantomimed lazily, tossing an arm over the side of the bed before her theatrical delivery fizzled back into something weary.

“Y’know a lotta people would just…go along with it. What’s the alternative, right? Hand me over, win your juicy prize- game over for Jinx, eh?”

Jinx paused, lifting her head to measure the look on Ekko’s face for a moment.

“But those are the people that care about ‘game over’.” She muttered, flopping back down.

Really, being thrown to the wolves would make for an interesting change of pace. Even if it went to shit, so what? You couldn’t screw anything up if you were dead.

"Instead of talking about what we already both know, then, are you gonna tell me whatever it is you do wanna be doing? Because you were on such a roll about your thoughts before - you might as well get it all out."

The voices who listened - the really good ones- they didn’t just walk out the door after you’d said your piece. Jinx slanted a distrustful look in Ekko’s direction. Did she look like someone who needed to sound off about her problems? Didn’t she look relaxed and decidedly over the whole situation? Why had Ekko come stomping back in, shaking the jar? Maybe he’d just come back for another beat-down. Yeesh. That was sad. Eh. They’d all been there before. For a moment, she almost felt sorry for him.

There was a tense pause as Jinx battled the ugly fluttering in her chest. The silence bordered on painful as she held onto barbed words like the pin of a grenade before slowly exhaling.

“I can’t…be here.” She managed, after a moment.

Did that…make sense? She wasn’t even sure what words to use to make Ekko understand it. It was a feeling without a name.

It was more productive than anger, than fighting, than gritting her teeth and trudging down to breakfast like a happy little prisoner. It was the meat of the issue- she was certain of it. The reason nothing Ekko said was going to feel right- the reason none of this would ever, truly, work. Even his stupid bug friends seemed to feel it. Hadn’t they been telling him too?

Suddenly laying sprawled out felt kinda ridiculous. She felt weird. Like suddenly she’d put on all her clothes backwards, or just plain forgotten to wear them at all. In a blink, Jinx was upright again, turned just far enough from Ekko for the whole thing to feel less icky as she coiled her arms around herself and waited for an answer.

Charred Bridge

Ekko splashed some water on his face, and resignedly set about re-applying his face paint. Sunlight was filtering through his window now; he had to face the day and whatever came with it, whether he felt ready or not.

He hadn't slept. He'd spent hours unpicking what had happened. Repeating the memory in his mind over and over, analysing every freeze-frame in his memory, in an effort to glean some new detail he'd missed - as if the key to what to do next was buried somewhere, waiting to be gleaned from the right scrap of information.

Mostly it had felt a lot like going blindly in circles and clutching at empty air.

His friends had tried to help. Eve in particular had been surprisingly diplomatic and compassionate about the whole thing. There had been no "I told you so", or any pressure towards a certain specific decision, in spite of what he knew they were all thinking.

Is this it, then?

The redness was gone from his face now; there was no lasting physical mark, only a little residual tenderness. Just like last time, the real damage from the blow was in the resounding devastation of what it represented.

A lot of the violence Jinx committed was from a distance. Shooting, blowing things up. It was easy to be detached with that kind of distance. A slap was up close and extremely personal. It wasn't her style.

And yet she'd gone for precisely that with him twice now.

He now knew where she'd learned it from - and it made it sting so much worse, that she was trying to hurt him and push him away in the exact way Vi had hurt and rejected her.

I don’t wanna be rescued. I'm Jinx now.

You’re not my family. You’re not! You’re not -!

Ekko shut the glass cabinet above his sink with a little more force than was strictly necessary, and turned away from his reflection. He could fix up his hair and clean up his face to make it look like he hadn't been up all night over this shit, but the real armour he needed was calm, decisive action.

By the time he reached the stairs, that strange, seething feeling started up under his skin again. He felt twitchy, on edge, as he descended the steps on autopilot. He didn't know what he was heading back into. The quiet on the other side of the door told him nothing.

It took a moment to spot her (was not getting immediately attacked a positive sign or not?) But when he did, fhe sight of her triggered a strong gut reaction - a violent swooping sensation in his stomach with a sharp pang, not unlike missing a step on the way down the stairs and then getting impaled with a broken piece of the bannister while trying to regain his balance. A jolt of apprehension and hurt and bitter grief that he had to swallow down, down, down.

You get one shot at this. Make it count.

"...So, are you coming down for breakfast, or are you still feeling like an asshole?"

The query was dryly sardonic, his expression deliberately neutral and bordering on nonchalant. But his eyes were unflinching, shrewdly evaluating.

He made a point of folding his arms and leaning against the doorway, as if this was business as usual and there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of. As if his heart wasn't absolutely hammering, as if he wasn't waiting to find out whether the childhood friend he'd worked so hard to reach for was about to drop another match and send his world up in smoke for a second time.

This was the only card he had left to play.

Either this would work, or it wouldn't.

Either she'd understand what he was trying to say, or she wouldn't.

Do I look like I'm running away?

so i realized the back half of s4 is the second time in the show that Bart has Done Some Shit and we haven't seen the repercussions/consequences. he lies through his teeth for over a month back in s2 about being a "tourist" and when the truth comes out that he WAS lying (and is from the apocalypse) it's never directly addressed on screen. now he's lied for over three months and disappeared for over two weeks in s4 and we don't see how that effects him or his life or the people in it AT ALL.

Yeah… For me, while i still love s4, i do think its biggest fault is in it's lack of outsiders presence - especially once we get to the bart plot - barts connection is with them - not any of the people he's grouped up with once free from lor (bar artemis maybe). we need to see the outsiders/those closest to him to experience the consequences that come from him deceiving and leaving them… it was obviously disappointing to not see them play much of a part through gars decline but i've talked about my perspective on why that is before (if i find that original post I’ll link it here) and when rewatching the series it didn't actually bother me as much… at this point, there remains only two moment where i really wish theyd have been seen or at least mentioned - the first is when Child is causing chaos around the world and we’re told every outsider, along with everyone else, has been called upon to help and yet we only see tara and cassie of the actual outsiders there… would it really have been too much to ask for a few more to be scattered in the background of the different disasters? There’s plenty of them at this point. The other is within the bart plot… it straight up bugs me that there is never any mention of the outsiders - or even just cassie, as their leader - being informed about the facts gathered during dicks investigation, especially after zatanna specifically mentions that bart and conner are both outsiders… if they are outsiders, then the outsiders should be involved in finding them - that has always been the way in which the teams think when something happens to one of their own… except in s4 apparently! Obviously, the show only has a certain amount of time and budget to tell the story it wants and they wanted the focus to be on the ogs - that's fair enough - but it really needed something… even if it was just a quick mention from artemis, or someone, that there were indeed outsiders out looking for bart - something similar to how they revealed joans funeral in s3 - a few small comments that highlight there's still more going on outside of the events being shown on screen.

It’s great getting Bart content (we always need more of it!) but with the decisions he chose to make with the legion and this show being rather good at showing there’s consequences to actions - there really should have been some repercussions at least hinted at by the end of the season. I feel like the closest we get is Dinah saying Jay’s been struggling - but because we never get to see that struggle and it’s never directly linked to Bart - it isn’t enough to count as a repercussion.* I’d have even settled for something to have been said in the comics about it, like him being benched or being on some kind of probation or him just taking some time off - but that also hasn’t happened. At this point, I guess we’ll never know, which is a shame because like I said before, this show is usually very good at including consequences… y’know, unless your name is Bart Allen that is. I am so desperate to see Bart get called out on his keeping secrets, or to see him actually struggle with things - mainly because it’s a side we really haven’t experienced yet - even after everything he’s been through. I wanna see Bart out of his depths, stuck in a situation he can’t run from, or heal his way out of, or be a goofball through. I wanna see the other sides of him. We’ve had three seasons with him - it’s time to finally delve deeper.

*Until told otherwise, my headcanon is that Jay loses some of his trust in Bart and winds up putting him on curfew and becomes a bit more restrictive of what he allows until he feels he can trust him again.

And those are my thoughts - basically, let’s start seeing the outsiders dealing with consequences the same way the OG have being since s1. Thanks for your message Anon!

Hello once again ^^ (Please excuse me for being in your askbox 3 times now!)

I was reading this post again and first time i shared my thoughts i forgot to add something i had been thinking before. (brainfry)

I feel like another reason why some fans took the cheater Gojo to heart is because he is stated to be attractive, in series and outside too. I mean, it is no surprise that he is very popular amongst fandom, both international and japan! But what i wanna add here, i think that people have the wrong idea of Gojo being aware that he is very attractive and ladies seem to like him (outwardly at least) but never in canon is Gojo actually shown to indulge anyone like that? Like, i don't mean to say that Gojo is involuntary celibate or anything of the sort, we do know he flirts but i just don't think that attractiveness should be linked or equated to being the type to lead women on and off or cheating even. And regardless, it does bring me back to my first point about Gojo simply not looking for any romantic relations because that's simply not the life he wants to lead, especially because of the circumstances of being a sorcerer. The strongest one too at that. One thing about Gege is he really loves dunking on Gojo and especially his die-hard fans, women too! He literally advises women not to pick Gojo, Nanami instead > and even states that Geto was/is more popular than Gojo. Bottom line, i think aromantic and asexual potential or even demi/pan should be considered.

Anyways, alot of fanon things tend to overlap canon and i personally don't like that. I keep in a very small corner of the fandom and only share my thoughts and opinions with people whom i find to be reasonable and understanding (like you for example!) and critical thinking the utmost. //

This one’s a long one with spoilers so warning to those who come across this who haven’t read the manga!

I mean Gege dunks on Gojo because they actually hate Gojo. And I don’t say that with exaggeration, I’m not being hyperbolic, like…Gege legit does not like Gojo and they’ve been very clear about that. Which is *sigh* I’m gonna go off on a tangent really quick.

From a writer standpoint, I totally get why they don’t like Gojo, because as a character, Satoru is overpowered and essentially undefeatable with the exception of the prison realm, and it can be stressful trying to write around that on a grueling weekly schedule to advance the plot in a meaningful way when there’s someone like him around in your story. Then a large percent of the fandom loves him so there’s pressure to keep him okay to avoid backlash and it can cause some resentment, so I get it.

But I also kinda don’t like how Gege gets snarky about how people love Gojo. As a writer, if fans like one of my characters I hate, like it can be an ugh at times but still it’s nice to have people enjoying something increased, so I don’t make that reaction clear even if I’m put off. But if that’s how Gege copes with the pressure and this overpowered character they created then cool, but even if they’re just joking and actually likes Gojo, like, they could just not. I’ve seen how their comments have hurt some of the younger fans’ feelings, especially during popularity polls, and it’s just something that kinda bugs me about Gege.

But from a fan standpoint? I just sigh because while I understand, I really like Gojo’s character. Between him and BNHA’s Aizawa, I understand his motives in trying to change systemic issues through upcoming generations especially as someone close to thirty who taught students for a few years, and I understand the loss and the stress, but I digress

Character sexuality I think of like I do ships: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s up to interpret and it’s whatever the fan sees y’know? That’s what makes fandom awesome! Personally, I think of Satoru as bi/pan (when I use bisexual it includes all genders but I know many prefer the term pansexual for more clear inclusivity!). I can definitely see the potential there for him to be aro/ace! It works for his character.

And now, in thinking of Gojo and relationships, or rather his lack thereof, it’s kinda hard to even consider him in a romantic relationship because of the situations he’s encountered, especially the one he’s in at the moment. After all, he’s not in a relationship right now because he actually can’t be since he’s in the prison realm (unless he’s currently in love with one of the skeletons in there which, given the roughly two weeks or so that it’s been between Shibuya and now in the manga’s timeline, and the 1000 days it’s been for us, who knows).

Also, if he weren’t boxed in the realm at the moment, then there’s the fact that the person he had the most chemistry with is dead (and in typing this I’m realizing that that statement could potentially go for more than just Suguru😭). Which goes back to the whole, if he connects himself to anyone it could happen again thing, which then goes back to the whole strongest thing, but also the whole Jujutsu sorcerors don’t exactly have a long life expectancy thing, which then goes back to the loneliest thing because he’s the strongest. But I digress

idk I’m rambling but Gege doesn’t really like Gojo, I think of Gojo as bi but I’m cool with whatever anyone sees Gojo’s sexuality being, and I hope that kinda answered your questions/added to your thoughts😅

Gonta could cut in and explain that, actually, some bugs are very dangerous. Some of them are venomous, or poisonous, or powerful in numbers. But Kokichi loves bugs, so he probably already knows. Instead, it's his final claim that Gonta refutes, a look of fear and shock spreading over his face.

"Oh, no! Gonta no hurt anyone! Gonta never kill friends. Just because Gonta big don't mean he do that. Gonta strong to protect friends and bugs. And to give big comfy hugs. See?"

With that, he scoops Kokichi up, holding him close but taking care not to crush him.

Kokichi, Gonta thinks, is a lot like a bug. He's small and clever and very pretty, with his own distinct markings and colors. And Gonta is going to protect him, no matter what it takes.

"Kokichi no kill anyone either, okay? Seeing people hurting make Gonta sad. We all work together and escape, and then Gonta show Kokichi whole world of bugs!" He pulls Kokichi closer into his chest, excitement getting the better of him, then hears something pop and holds him at arm's length with concern.

Kokichi was right. Gonta is strong, but he doesn't want to hurt anybody. Looking him over, Kokichi doesn't seem to be broken, so Gonta just smiles at him. Kokichi is like a bug in that regard, too-- he's easy to hold, easy to love, but not all that easy to break.

I am! I’ve fallen into (back) into SPN hell recently and gotten a ton of feels I did not expect, thank you very damn much. But anyway, yes I am happy to oblige.

Dean’s voice is very distinct, but I can see why it’s hard to grapple with for many writers because very seldom does he say what he means and very often when he does it’s wrapped up in humour or pain. It’s often quippy as a means of deflecting emotion or maintaining a status quo or emotional handle over a situation. He uses commands and charm and pop culture references but he’s a very complex character so sometimes that all disappears and he’s open and vulnerable and raw, and those lines can be hard to draw.

Notes

To understand Dean’s focal speech patterns, we first to recognize that we’ve known Dean for 15 years, and that people’s modes of speaking can and will change over time. We’re gonna focus on things that have stayed more or less consistent over time, and his ‘base’ speech patterns that make his dialogue him. I’ll mostly shy away from different eras but may highlight a few things, and the same goes for who he’s talking to because he’s pretty similar with his only major differences being a function of closeness. He’s not much of a conversational mimic so we don’t have to worry about that.

We’re also gonna state the obvious and contrast the type of conversation he might be having - whether he’s tied up or in danger vs. expressing emotions vs. focused on the job. That’s probably where the meat of this is for people who are interested in these kinds of analyses anyway :)

Also - this is 4200 words so I’m sure there are typos so just acknowledging that up front.

Sentence Style

Let’s start with overall style.

Dean’s speech is generally straightforward (when he’s not being referential) with a low proportion of adjectives and a decent amount of degree modifiers (more on that below). He uses simple sentences with clear statements, though will add clauses to clarify, reference, or add degree fairly frequently.

For example:

”Like you said” is acting here as a way to refer back to a previous conversation. Dean does this more when he’s stating something not about himself/his subjective experience, but stating an absolute (or at least something to be taken as absolute).

Also something to point out about this example: like I said he uses shorter, simpler sentences. While that isn’t always true of course, it definitely it is the case that he doesn’t tend toward long, breathless sentences. Even here he could have said this in one sentence and instead split it into two concrete points. A person could transcribe it differently (”Like you said, we’re family, and we don’t leave family behind.”) but he tends to speak in this manner that implies full stops between these separate statements.

(Later I’m gonna completely contradict myself by talking about his longer statements btw. He tends to use longer sentences in more serious conversations, and includes clauses that qualify the statement).

Declarative I-Statements

Dean uses a ton of declarative sentences starting with I. Like - a lot of people do. But Dean’s iconic quotes are often “I”, and a large proportion of his sentences are declarative sentences in the active voice centring around him, his opinion, or his experience of the world. From “I think he wants us to pick up where he left off - saving people, hunting things, the family business.” to “I think I’m adorable”, Dean likes to tell us what he thinks and what he is.

You can also extend this pattern to other sentences that might start with different words but carry the same thesis “Demons I get - people are crazy.” It could be reworded just as simply as “I get demons - people are crazy.” But if Sam were the one saying it? “People are crazy” seems just as likely (although I’d put my money on “what is wrong with people?” as Sam’s most likely statement if he were trying to get the same sentiment across). Sam would express it as an absolute about the world or a rhetorical question, rather than one focused around his view of the world. Which doesn’t make Sam less self-focused or idiocentric than Dean, but their speech patterns express different modes of seeing the world, and in some ways Dean’s vocal patterns do more to acknowledge that his view of the world is subjective (but also that his subjective view is all he really cares about anyway).

Imperative and Commands

Dean speaks in a lot of commands. Idk what else to tell you. He’s a natural leader and he takes charge of situations, so it’s just kind of a natural facet of his speech.

He does this with humour:

Telling people what to do isn’t always met kindly, of course:

And although not an imperative sentence, he also is comfortable using speech to demand compliance:

Word Choices

One thing I like to always examine is word choice, contractions, and negation, so let’s dive in to that.

Diction

While Dean doesn’t flower up his language much in terms of verb and noun choice, that isn’t because he has a small vocabulary. I’d wager it’s a choice to being unpretentious because of the world he lives in. He never has any issue pulling out technical or clinical language:

(Also seen here: he tends to be very pithy and flippant, especially when he’s unimpressed with someone or with a situation, or wants to express annoyance and frustration. It’s his first-stop for “I dislike this”.)

We’ve seen him use words like Achilles’ Heel and describe how he made an EMF using technical language, so there’s no hesitancy to drop these terms, but for him it’s a matter of expressing what he wants to in a manner that will be easily understood by the person with whom he’s speaking.

Negation

For how he uses negation - Dean doesn’t say “ain’t” and he seldom said “[x]’s not”. His typical negation is “isn’t”.

(Not “this ain’t the Scooby Gang” and not “it’s not / we’re not the Scooby Gang”. Isn’t. And yes, the line “there ain’t no me if there ain’t no you” bugs the hell out of me for this specific reason. When else have we ever heard him say ain’t? “There is no me if there is no you” is way more in keeping with his usual negation style.)

He also negates using the word Never. “I’ve never had anything this nice.”

Like this. And like this:

This is interesting because it fits into Dean’s pattern (discussed below) of using words (adverbs and swears alike) as ways to modify the intensity of his sentences. A lot of people use qualifiers to create this sense of degree (words like “really” and “very”). While Dean sometimes uses or combines those words with others (”really freakin’ hate this”), he does something that very few people do, which is use the qualifying word ‘never’ to express an absolute quality. Most of us can’t say we’ve never done something. We might say we “didn’t” do something, but we don’t express it as absolute as “never”. Dean does. Dean makes it clear what things simply do not get to be attributed to him or are not to be counted within his sphere of existence.

(He says it under less extreme circumstances too though...)

Contractions

Dean is liberal with his use of contractions and word shortenings. I’d recommend writing his use of words like “freaking” as “freakin’” “nothin’” and so forth. Can’t, not cannot.

Gonna, wanna. You are going to want to = You’re gonna wanna. (Also “you’re gonna have to trust me”. He tells people what they’re gonna have to do a lot).

He uses other shortenings like “y’know” and “’cause” as well, when he’s relaxed at least. Like all of us, if he’s emphasizing those words he’ll enunciate fully, so try to match the contraction use to what you want to emphasize and to the tone you want to convey.

Addressing Others

I wasn’t sure what else to call these (linguists might have some idea), but I’m talking about the use of words like “man” “dude” and “y’know” (and even his “Listen Velma” above). He uses these words like we all do - to ensure the person we’re talking to is clear that we’re addressing them directly, calling them into the conversation. Dean uses ‘dude’ a frequent amount for Sam (and others) but also “Man” at times (especially when annoyed). He uses “brother” for Benny as well in S8 in the same manner.

Conversely, “y’know” tends to come up when he’s being sly or pithy. He doesn’t really use ‘Buddy’ except for strangers (but not like Sam who essentially uses it as a threat) and I can’t recall him saying ‘pal’.

Positive and Negative Words

Some generic positives: awesome, super (often sarcastic)

Some recurrent negatives: ugly, bad, douch-y

“It ends bloody. It ends bad.”

Expressing Emphasis

Look - Dean doesn’t use a lot of adjectives, but he does use a lot of degree modifiers/adverbs. One of those is “just”. “Just do [x].” “Just so you know.” Just.

(Even here, “I just”).

He also does a very neat thing with the word “Uh.” It’s used not to hesitate or equivocate, like most people might use it, but instead to increase attention to what he’s saying. A false-hesitancy which tends to both emphasize and diffuse what he’s saying a bit.

(It’s so neat!)

Swearing

There is absolutely no doubt that Dean is an avid curser. There’s an excellent 4th-wall-bending implication from 3x13 (Ghostfacers) where we see Dean (and Sam) dropping f-bombs and other swears that get bleeped out in the Ghostfacers documentary. Which allows us as the audience to realize they’re swearing all the time, but that the network doesn’t allow that kind of swearing, so we see a watered down version of their dialogue on screen.

Dean says “freaking” a lot, and I feel like we can assume that 9 times out of 10, he’s dropping an f bomb. His favourite exclamation is “son of a bitch”, but when he’s really pissed off, we get a “motherf*cker”. Seasons 4-8 his favourite thing to call people is a douche or douchebag if he looks down on them. In general my advice to authors would be not to hesitate to have Dean swear, but make sure you’re using them right.

While many swears are just exclamations or word replacement (”kicked my ass” instead of “kicked my butt”), a lot of the swearing that Dean does is specifically to increase emphasis to something in his speech. Adding in freaking/f*cking as an intensifier is probably its most common use for him.

For the record, he uses “hell” in a similar fashion. What the hell, how the hell, where the hell - etc. Expressing intense emotions via swears that increase the degree/magnitude/intensity of the statement.

(Oddly enough, although Dean will insult people casually calling them douche, etc, when he’s pressed and angry and aggressive, his insults toward people don’t become vitriolic diatribes. Threats are more common, typically without an upscale in cursing, and so is being pithy to get them mad and distracted.)

Questions, Answers, and Emotions

Okay so one thing I have to address: I kind of setup a strawman in the opening about sentence length. Because sure, Dean uses a lot of shorter and more declarative sentences. But he’s a person, which means that the bulk of his speech is just speech. While all else being equal, he uses more shorter, i-statements, and more commanding language than others, he also has conversations. He’s got a great sense of humour and a bit of an acid tongue, even under pressure, so if you’re not writing him with some some glibness or humour (even when it comes out biting, frustrated or falls completely flat) you’re probably missing something.

And often, he expresses himself in questions. This humour and glibness can come out like: "What are you, the Dog Whisperer now?" in a less strained situation, or it can come out to try to keep his feels under wraps while seeking insight:

Of course it’s not all questions. Sometimes his glibness, including for his own life, comes out in the form of answers:

He’s being serious but totally glib about life and death, having accepted his fate. (Dean accepting his own mortality is kind of also a must, especially post S1 finale).

And sometimes he expresses pain and feeling as questions without any glibness at all:

So to be clear, don’t write him as only ever using short i-declarations. Pepper those in, but remember that if he’s expressing an emotion or a vulnerability (even if he’s covering it with glibness), he’ll be using this roundabout way with questions or with indirect answers that don’t directly state his feelings but still manage to convey what he’s thinking.

Pleading

One more thing I want to touch on in this section: there are (probably surprising to some who aren’t looking) a lot of notes of supplication when he’s talking to others and feeling vulnerable. It’s very easy to think of Dean as someone who’ll never ask, never beg or plead. Because that’s what he wants you to think, because he’s the cool, in charge Han Solo type.

But Dean does ask. He pleads. He pleads to God/Chuck, he pleads to his father, to Sam, to Cass. A major difference between he and Sam is actually the situations in which they’re likely to say “please”. Sam’s likely to use it as a first response (and therefore says it waaaay more) but absolutely refuse to under duress. Dean will never ever use it as a first response, but will fall back and resort to it in the end. We could unpack what that means about their psyche, but we’re here for language.

Not too surprisingly, I’m having a hard time getting the gif search to grant me specific gifs of Dean saying ‘please’, but I can recall some instances. S1 finale, when Azazel is possessing John. First he starts with quips and pissing Azazel off, and then it’s “Don’t you let him hurt me!” and then when that fails, he begs his father to help him.

He pleads in S1 for Sam not to leave, because Sam is all he has left. He pleads with an angelic APB at the opening of S9 for an angel to save Sam. He tells Cass he needs him when Cass his pulverizing his face. “Please, he’s my brother”. Is that what he says to Lilith? Or was the ‘please’ implied there?

Here, instead of single gifs, you should get the full experience of the duress under which Dean will say please:

You get the idea. He doesn’t always say please. Sometimes it’s notes of supplication in his voice and sometimes it’s a somewhat desperate “c’mon man” when he doesn’t want to have to ask but he’s at the end of his rope.

(Okay final characterization note for this section - I also think Dean is probably useless against someone who looks up at him with wide sad eyes and says ‘please’ to him. I suspect part of why it’s his final defense is because he himself would be defenseless to that kind of plea from others, because he was hardwired from a young age to look after his infant little brother, and that involves a certain amount of responding to pleading and helplessness).

Pop Culture References

Dean uses a lot of highly referential language. He refers to bands and musicians, films, pop culture, current events and modern history, etc. Despite him not being overly tapped into social media (e.g., not knowing what myspace is in early seasons, among other things), it’s equally clear that he’s tapped into film, TV, music - any means through which he can consume content. This makes sense given how much driving time and downtime his life must have, with time in motels and between jobs to watch and rewatch the same media. Try to pepper in these sorts of references in as ways for Dean to describe what’s going on and relate new experiences to what makes sense to him.

If you’re a non-American writing him, or a very young American, it doesn’t hurt to brush up on music and media that were popular from the 80s and 90s, which will make up the core of Dean’s formative years and therefore references. There’s also evidence he knows a lot of pop culture history though so don’t hesitate to make references to films etc from any decade of the 20th century. He’s also a bit of a sci-fi nerd and we know he reads (including Vonnegut) so literary references are perfectly in order. I would shy away from references to historical fiction, Shakespeare, and instead keep it to genres we know he consumes (including cartoons!).

(ps - seriously just look at this post - we’ve got scooby doo and blues brothers and batman and I wasn’t even trying to find pop culture references when I gif searched).

Deeper Emotional Conversations

While I mentioned above that he uses questions and answers to roundabout discuss his feelings, not all chick flick moments can be handled in that manner, and many can’t be handled with glibness at all.

For Dean, directly addressing his deeper negative emotions is difficult, and thus becomes a pained pronouncement. The nuance tends to come through in his face and nonverbal cues so focus on those, but linguistic choices are pretty important here. And this is where directly naming his emotions comes in. Unlike that question/answer section above where his thoughts and feelings are conveyed without directly naming his sentiment, sometimes he is called upon to express his feelings more specifically.

Because let’s be honest, he’s got his A Single Man Tear(TM) and he’s got deep, painful feelings, but he sucks at talking about them.

Let’s create an example that isn’t something that specifically happened in canon, but easily could. So - let’s say that Dean might need to say he’s scared of losing Sam. That would come after some pained discussion and Dean will act like he’s having his teeth pulled, but he will say it. And when he does, it’s either an angry proclamation (”you want me to say it? fine! i’m scared, sam - i’m scared as hell that one day i’ll wake up and you’ll be gone.”) or he cracks himself open completely exposed and vulnerable, and all the air rushes from the room when you see it because his eyes are shining and it’s visceral and real and been sitting right below the surface, suffocated until this moment (”i’m scared, sam,” a crack in his voice, an inhale of breath, and he looks a second from losing it. but it’s dean so he won’t, he’ll hold on by the skin of his teeth with his heart spilling out of his mouth, red with the blood of his own truths. “i’m terrified of losing you.”).

There’s very little in between. There’s almost never any emotionally removed or more clinical discussion of his feelings like you might get with Sam. (”you want me to say i’m scared? of course i’m scared. i’m terrified, dean, but that’s not the point here. the point is -”). Because Dean struggles to accept and avow his painful internal emotional landscape, he struggles to discuss it in a way that’s removed, so it becomes very intense when he does.

What this also means for writing emotional dialogue is that although Dean does not lack insight into his emotions, where they come from, and why he’s feeling the way he is, he’ll very seldom provide you an in depth explanation. This may make him seem less emotionally mature, but really what’s happening is a struggle to put those feelings into words. Discussion of anxiety, insecurity, and trauma are put into boxes he can more easily communicate - fear, anger, violence. Less “I overreacted because I was scared of losing you” and more “I’m fucking terrified of losing you. And yeah, it pisses me off.” Dean doesn’t tend to use explanatory statements (”because”), he tends to present emotions and even concepts outside of emotional discussions as separate statements, and it becomes your job to then connect those statements (as the one he’s talking to, and as the audience).

Like I said near the start, Dean also uses longer sentences when having serious conversations. “As long as I’m around, nothing bad’s gonna happen to you.” Note the first half of that sentence acting as a qualifier (implying something bad could happen, but not when Dean is around, creating the condition upon which the whole sentence and sentiment hangs).

Less Declarative Expression

Dean expresses negative emotions like disappointment and frustration as well, but unlike his more intense/extreme negative emotions (terror, fear of abandonment, deep anger) he very seldom will declare those emotions. While he might use question and answer format, he might also control the conversation with a straightforward expression that saves him from having to say what he’s feeling while still getting it across.

For example, "Well that's great, because without your power, you're basically just a baby in a trench coat." Instead of saying he’s frustrated, he says something that gets to the point of what he’s mad about without saying he’s mad. (This is especially true when what he’s mad about is the situation. Because while these statements are about people, on the balance of things, they’re not really directed at them. Because often he’s frustrated because of something they can’t solve and he knows that).

He’s also liable to not-declare-but-express pent up feelings he’s not ready to unpack in the same manner:

He’s obviously stressed and angry, but he doesn’t want to have to avow that anger and unpack all of where it’s coming from. It’s not the feeling of the emotion he dislikes so much as it is the examination of the underpinning reasons for it, because the dredge it up and unpack it is more painful than to let himself to continue to feel it at this low consistent level while he processes.

Outliers and End Notes

No post can fully capture and analyze 15 years of dialogue. There’s probably a million important elements to Dean’s speech that I missed. I think I want to emphasize a few things before we part.

First - if you really want to write Dean, make sure you write him as charismatic. He uses humor, charm, deflection, questions, commands, and confidence all to control conversations and he does it seamlessly. Despite his rakish nature, he seldom if ever seems to offend people (unless he’s deliberately trying to piss them off) and you should take that into consideration when writing him.

Keeping him fully in character will therefore involve a sort of fluidity about his speech, and those references. He is personable and exceptionally confident. He does not tend to hesitate or apologize (except in a flippant, superficial way, or in very strained emotional conversations and then only to those he loves deeply). His volume and tone are probably as or more important than his words, so consider when he’s saying something with a purr vs. with a snarl vs. shouting vs. having his voice crack into a whisper. He’s incredibly expressive with his face, but not overly gesticular with his hands (though he does gesture, just not in a way that stands out a great deal).

If you want or need him to give some type of confession in what you’re writing, you pretty much have two options. Either expressing his emotions in ways I’ve described here, or giving it the good ol’ S12 monologue where he bares his soul (when he’s inside Mary’s head). That should be reserved only for very extreme circumstances though - circumstances like saving his mother from brainwashing, discussing his hell trauma, or declaring that there’s nothing on heaven or earth he’d put before his little brother. Because in general long speeches aren’t his style.

And if you can, give some thought to what season you’re writing in. Is he still calling everyone and everything douch-y? Is he in the later seasons and more capable of unpacking his emotions directly? Is he in the early seasons where he’s trying to be Han Solo and too damn cool and smooth about everything, even his impending death?

At the end of the day - Dean is a wonderful, complex character and I hope this analysis helps some writers understanding his speech and character better!

The days where there were no Akumas were always the easiest. Having one less day to worry about fighting super-villains always gave Ladybug and Chat Noir enough time in the evenings to kick back and relax on some abandoned roof. It’s not everyday they get to simply hang out with each other.

“I wonder where Hawkmoth’s been all day,” Chat Noir pipes up after the two get situated. “It’s not like our main man to skip a day, y’know?” Ladybug gave her partner a dead stare.

“Our “main man” was probably busy, which I’m thankful for. I really needed the break. Come sit over here,” The spotted hero swings her legs over the edge of the roof, patting the spot next to her. “I wanna watch the sun set.”

Chat Noir plops down next to her and looks out over the city, casually moving his hand to lay stop Ladybug’s. She raises and eyebrow at him, but ultimately stays still. Everything is quiet and peaceful as the two heroes watch the vibrant colors of the sky become softer and darker.

“Hey, Bug? Can we…” Chat Noir trails off.

“Can we…?”

“Can we… talk? I mean, can I talk, you don’t have to really talk, just, uh, listen.” Ladybug gives a nod for him to continue.

“Go ahead.” Chat Noir steels himself, taking a deep breath.

“You haven’t talked about that guy you like in a while. Is he still around?” Ladybug’s eyebrows knit together, already knowing where this conversation is going.

“”Yes, he is, why?” Her partner shrugs.

“Haven’t heard about him in a while, kinda assumed he wasn’t around anymore.”

“Chat, I know where you’re getting at with this. I’m still in love with him, alright? Conversation over.” Chat Noir huffs softly.

“You’ve been saying that for the past two years. Have you even talked to him about how you feel?” Ladybug falters slightly, opening her mouth then closing it again. “Exactly. Why chase after the same boy for so many years when he won’t give you the light of day, you know? I’ve noticed how you look when you talk about him, and sometimes you look downright hurt. Is this path really what you want?”

“And what about you? Haven’t you been chasing me around all these years as well?”

“And have you noticed I’ve backed off after you told me about this other guy? Don’t get me wrong, I still adore you to bits, but that’s-” Ladybug stands up abruptly.

“Different? It’s different? Please, point out all of the differences for me, because I see none. You’re being a hypocrite, Chat. I don’t want to hear it. I’m leaving.”

“Wait!” Before she can fly off, Chat Noir grabs her wrist. “Please, wait a second.”

Ladybug glares at her partner, but stills.

“I’m sorry. I know now that I’m being a hypocrite, I wasn’t trying to. You’re right, our situations aren’t different and it was unfair of me to say so. I just…”

“…Just?” Chat Noir threads his fingers through hers, gripping her hands softly.

“I really do care about you. I see how sad you look when you talk about this other guy, and I want to make all the sadness go away. I’ve… I’ve never felt love this strong before. I never knew what other people were talking about when I was younger… But I do now. I love you so much, Ladybug. And I do admit, that’s made me a little stupid and I’ve done and said stupid things, and I apologize for all the times you’ve had to deal with it. I do really care about you, and I don’t want my feelings getting in the way of our friendship, so I’ll stop. I’ve been kind of a dick lately, I’ll stop bothering you about it when I know you like someone else. I promise.”

Ladybugs face softens. She takes her hands from his and winds her arms around his torso, hugging him gently.

“I know how you feel. Love makes us do things we regret, I forgive you. I like where our relationship is at right now, I hope you understand.”

“Completely.” Chat Noir hugs her back, resting his chin on her head. “I’m sorry, I know this was supposed to be our night to relax.” Ladybug giggles into his chest.

“It’s okay. No rest for superheroes. I do gotta go, though, it’s getting late. Good night, Chat Noir.” She throws her yo-yo, shooting off into the night. Chat Noir’s gaze follows her longingly.

“Good night, Ladybug.”

Stan paced in front of the partof the forest the McGuckets lived in. Itwas sealed off to mortal eyes, but he and Molly had been granted accessliterally ever since they met Angie. Hewasn’t used to not being allowed in. This was his sixth month being stuck on the “mortal” side.

“Come on, you tree- deer-whatever people!” Stan raged. “I haven’theard from any of you in months! Ihaven’t seen my girlfriend for half a damn year! Let me in!” He kicked a log.

No, Stan. Kicking the forestthey protect won’t help your case. Stan sat down on the log he’d kicked, mumbling an absentminded apologyto it.

“I just- I’m worried, okay?”Stan vented to the empty forest. “Youall vanished without saying anything.” There was a slight rustle. Stanwhipped his head around. Lute had emergedfrom the enchanted area he lived in, and was watching Stan silently. “Lute?” The forest spirit nodded.

“Do ya want to see her?”

“Duh!” Stan said, jumping upfrom his seat.

“Then come on.” Lute turned around and began to walkaway. Stan bolted after him, relievedwhen he was able to cross into the McGuckets’ part of the forest. Lute was uncharacteristically silent duringtheir trek. Stan looked around,fascinated by the magical wildlife. Sure, everything in Gravity Falls had magical creatures, but where theMcGuckets lived, it was even more intense.

“I, uh, I don’t recognize thispart,” Stan said, suddenly realizing that they weren’t headed toward theMcGucket homestead. Lute shook his head.

“That’s ‘cause you’ve never beenthis way. Where I’m takin’ ya, no mortalhas ever seen before. It’s sacredterritory.”

“You’re not gonnaritualistically sacrifice me or something, are you?” Stan asked,half-joking. Lute eyed him.

“Nah. Time’s passed for that,” Lute saidflatly. Stan’s blood ran cold.

“So you would sacrifice me-”

“Shh!” Lute hissed, thankfully cuttingStan off. “Be on yer best behavior inthis glen, understand? Yer ‘bout to walkon hallowed ground.” Stan swallowednervously and nodded. Lute carefullyparted a curtain of vines hanging from sassafras trees, revealing a clearedarea. A thin coat of spring green grasscovered the ground, and there was a fountain bubbling in the center of theclearing. Looking at the water madeStan’s eyes hurt. Someone was sitting onthe edge of the fountain, facing away from Stan. Lute nudged Stan forward.

“Angie?” Stan askedcautiously. The person lifted theirhead, deer ears turning his direction. Slowly, the person stood up and turned to face him. She was hidden through a sheen of theeye-hurting water from the fountain, but Stan still recognized her. “Angie!” Stan strode quickly towards her. “God, it’s too damn long.” Angienodded. He finally came to a stop infront of her. “You better have a goodreason for all this weird stuff going on. And Lute talking about sacrificing me.” He suddenly realized that Angie was cradling a bundle.

“I do,” Angie said softly. She carefully parted the folded blanketwrapping the bundle in her arms. “Hisname is Emory.” Stan’s heartstopped. He stared at the infant inAngie’s arms. A few wisps ofcaramel-colored hair covered Emory’s head, not concealing the tiny nubs thatwould eventually become antlers. Hisdeer-like ears twitched as he clenched and unclenched his fists in hissleep.

“Is- is he… mine?” Stan chokedout. Angie made a small smile, stillwatching Emory.

“I’ve never met anyone else withthat nose, darlin’.”

“But you’re- but we- we never,y’know, did it,” Stan said. “‘Cause you’re,like, half deer, and you said a human couldn’t knock boots with a forest spiritlike you, anyways.”

“Forest spirits don’t follow thesame rules as mortals,” Lute said, abruptly appearing by Stan’s side, startlinghim. “When two people have a connection,of mutual trust and love and understandin’, a child is created from thosefeelin’s.” Lute gazed at hisnephew. “That’s how all of us wereborn. From the deep, personal connectionMa ‘n Pa had with each other.”

“Am I supposed to just, I dunno,expect unplanned pregnancies from here on?” Stan asked weakly.

“No. As far as I know, only one offspring can beborn from a human-forest spirit union,” Lute said.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Stanasked.

“There are traditions even Ican’t ignore,” Angie said in a low voice. “And the ones regardin’ mortals and forest spirit offspring are includedin that category.” Emory shifted in herarms. “He can leave the forest, by theway.”

“What?”

“Emory, he’s only half forestspirit. He’s free to go wherever he pleases.”

“But you can’t,” Stan said. Angie shook her head.

“No. I can’t.” Angie cleared her throat. “Do yawant to hold him?”

“He’s my kid. Of course I do.” Angie carefully handed Emory over toStan. She and Lute watched Stan adjusthis hold on Emory instinctively.

“Yer good at this,” Luteremarked.

“I learned how to hold babieswhen Molly was born,” Stan replied. Emory opened his eyes and yawned. Stan’s mouth quirked into a smile. “Damn, he’s cute.”

“Any fawn of my sister’s wouldbe,” Lute said proudly. Angie rolled hereyes.

“That thing you did with yourhouse,” Stan said suddenly, “do you think you could do it again?”

“Convincin’ livin’ trees tobraid together ‘n form a dwelling?” Angie asked.

“Yeah, that.”

“Sure, we could. But why?”

“Well, you don’t like peoplechopping down the trees in your forest, but we’re gonna need to make a house,”Stan said, idly rocking Emory. Emorygiggled.

“What for?” Lute asked.

“So Molly and I can live withyou and Emory,” Stan replied. Angie’seyes widened. “What, did you think Iwouldn’t wanna help raise him? Antlersor not, he’s still my son.” Stanshrugged. “Molly’s been bugging me aboutmoving in with you for a while anyways.”

“Do ya really have to hide yeremotions like that?” Lute asked Stan.

“Yeah, pretty much. Mind showing me the way back? I gotta go brag about my half-deer kid, now.”

5) Do you prefer to read/write long fics or short fics?

- in terms of writing, I prefer to write long fics. I tent to lean towards doing the most approximately all of the time when I write, and it makes it very difficult for me to write short fics. And honestly I wish it didn't but long fics are the way for me baby.

- reading though, I think I tend to lean more toward short fics. If I'm just looking for something casually to get my fix, I find myself engaging with more short fics. But on the flip side, I write long fics so I love them, and if I come across one that piques my interest and really grabs me, then man I'm hooked and it will consume my life akskskk but generally speaking I find myself reading more short fics than long ones. I think because I have such a hard time writing them, I'm drawn more to shorter ones when I read. Or something like that I guess?

13) What are some of your writing/reading pet peeves?

- Y’know I haven't really thought about this all that much before. Of course the standard mixed up spellings of there/their/they're and your/you're because good lord people it's not that hard 😭

- I also fuckin hate the trope when like a character is captured and they make friends with the guard or whatever and they like turn good and shit ugh 😭 or when there's a fuckin self insert that's a bad guy but makes friends with the good guys and turns good no. No. I don't mind oc's, I've had some in fics, I mean Angel's Tears and OUAD have Fiona and her crew as minor antagonists, and OUAD and SBH have Mrs. Rhodes and Mrs. Princeton. But the thing is they're just kinda there. They don't overstep in their roles. And when I was like 12/13, I 100% wrote self inserts too because everybody does at some point in their lives and that's normal and fine, and they don't really bug me all that much. But let bad guys just be bad guys sometimes 😭 I want the actual characters to save each other and have that satisfying reunion 😭 Ireally don't know why that makes me so angry but it does aksksk

21) What are your top 3 fics you've written and why?

- oh boy this is such a loaded question akskks 😅 Now we all know I'm of the opinion that favorite and best are not inherently mutually exclusive, so this changes they way I think about it a bit.

- so in that event, I think I'd say my top 3 fics would be: Once Upon A Duelist, Sons of The Stars, and Salt In the Wound.

Honorable mention goes to Sustained by Hate (Abby's version)(from the vault)

-If I had to explain why, well I think we might have another novel of an answer on our hands but I'll try to be brief 😅

- OUAD I've said before is my favorite fic I've ever written as it stands right now, and also just so happens to be the one I feel is my best. I think it has the most solid plot I've written in a long time, even if you ignore that it's a Sleeping Beauty adaptation so the plot was already there to begin with. But only with the basic plot line, everything I did to put my own spin on it worked really well, and it's the best executionl of a romance plot I've ever done aksksk 😅 and there's just some fuckin bangers of dialog and character interactions in it that make me giggle and kick my feet in the air like a school girl and also sob my eyes out.

- Also y'know, it gets bonus points for being a Sleeping Beauty adaptation which is my favorite movie of all time, and Aurora's my favorite princess and I've been in love with Phillip for as long as I've had conscious thought and memory so having Chazz and Atticus in their roles was the best ever 😭 plus Slade and Jagger actually die which is what I want for them. Perfection.

- Still really wanna do an OUAD 2 but really gotta clear some stuff from my WIP list first 😭😭😭

- Sons of The Stars, of course my 136k GX fantasyish au I built from the ground up. I'd love to say it's my magnum opus, but it really isn't. But I love it so much, it's very important to me. Ironically it is also the only fic I've done where Chazz and Atticus have 0 interaction because they're never in the same room at the same time. And when they are, they don't interact on screen 😭 of course I wrote it before I knew I shipped them but I digress.

- There's a lot of elements from season 3 in that fic where the plot is concerned honestly, Yubel wanting to combine all 12 dimensions which would destroy everything, Axel's entire storyline is a parallel of his arc in the survival duel arc, Jaden and Jesse being not at all straight, and so on. Honestly there's probably ploy holes and stuff and some stuff that's confusing that I don't explain well or whatever, but the general plot I think is so cool and interesting 😭

- Not my best execution of a romance plot but it also was the first time I actually tried to do that at all so I give myself a little grace for that. Also I did refer to Yubel as she/her throughout the fic like they do in the dub because that's what was just how I was introduced to that character and that became default in my brain. But eventually I will get around to going back and fixing that I promise I have so many fics to write right now 😭

- But also what I love about that fic is the wardrobe I designed for it it's so good 😭 I've shared drawings of that before for anybody reading this who hasn't seen those asksks and I did that just kinda for fun since I was in high school when I started planning and writing that fic and I just kinda started drafting up wardrobes in class instead of working 😅 but after designes and redesigns and all that I fuckin love the wardrobe for this fic and it was such a fuckin awesome creative outlet that I needed.

- also some of my best chapter titles are in the fic bro, like some of them are so fuckin good 😭 Skyfall, Secrets of Ages Past, Fragility of The Heart, Purity of The Heart, and Confessions of The Heart (the trinity as I affectionately call those chapters) among others. I'm not good at fic titles but dammit I'm good at chapter titles sometimes 😤

- and real quick before I move on, the entirety of Chazz and Alexis's relationship in this fic. She's all kinds of messed up emotionally in this and she's grown jaded and cold, and she hated him at the start. She hated him when they met when they were kids and she never let go of that or let him change in her mind all those years. But Jaden gets her to think that she's wrong, and when they meet him after they rescue him for Crowler, she accepts that she was wrong, but she's still cold to him. Alexis likes Chazz, not like likes him but she's endeared by him, but she doesn't like that she likes him and she ends up staying cold to him for a while. They argue like a married couple the whole time, and in Fragility of The Heart when she's overtaken by the influence of the darkness seeping out of the core of the 11th dimension because of Yubel, she's not in her right mind and she says a lot of harsh things and makes accusations she shouldn't be saying. And Chazz has to reveal to her the scars he's gotten from his brothers and brings her back down to earth and grounds her back into reality. He heard her crying to Atticus earlier in chapter 12 so he knows he's the only one who can get through to her then, and when he does she softens up on him from then on. And all of this ends up leading up to Alexis turning to Chazz to be her shoulder to cry on at the end of the penultimate chapter. The first of now 2 times they've had that FF7R Cloti moment.

I love the evolution of their relationship on her end especially, she grows the most throughout the entire story of everyone I think, and it just makes me feel good inside.

- and my number 3, Salt in the Wound.

My aftermath to episode 95... I've ranted enough about this, but it's just such a cathartic fic for me. One of the free short fics I've been able to do, and I just love the actual writing. So much of it was stream of consciousness, and I cried a lot working on it. I'll come to Sy's defense at any time anywhere and against anyone. Especially his own brother. He's my favorite character, he's also me in more ways than I care to think about sometimes. I love that fic so much, but it's also really hard to read sometimes. I know I'll write things that hurt me more, I know I will. But right now that's the one that hurts me the most. After everything Zane did and how far he'd fallen, Syrus still cared about him. Syrus still loved him and wanted his brother's acceptance. And writing that just hurt my heart in an entirely different way than anything else I've done before. But the whole experience like I said was so cathartic and I needed it. So it's one of my favorites.

24) If I could tell my past self something before I posted my first fic, I think I'd have something to say at various points in time. Like my first grade school fic, middle school fic, and high school fic eras. Nothing from before high school exists anymore, but no matter what specifically I might think so say to each of those past mes, I think the same thing that would be said to all of them would be not to ever for a second forget to have fun. And to tell myself that you're gonna feel like a failure sometimes. Your stuff won't take off right away, you're gonna feel burnt out, you're gonna feel bad. But you're also gonna love it. You're gonna feel the best you've felt in your life when you write. And don't worry, there are gonna be people that love your work.

I'd tell myself to just sit back and enjoy it. It's all gonna be worth it. You're not wasting your time. You're only gonna get better. I won't say to change anything I've written, I'd let myself write the crap and the actual flops and things I'm embarrassed by how bad they were when I look back now. Because that's what led me here. That's how I learned. That was me being an authentic kid.

I'd tell past me to smile and be proud of herself.
