the motel room, or: on datedness
Tumblr media
I.
Often I find myself nostalgic for things that haven't disappeared yet. This feeling is enhanced by the strange conviction that once I stop looking at these things, I will never see them again, that I am living in the last moment of looking. This is sense is strongest for me in the interiors of buildings perhaps because, like items of clothing, they are of a fashionable nature, in other words, more impermanent than they probably should be.
As I get older, to stumble on something truly dated, once a drag, is now a gift. After over a decade of real estate aggregation and the havoc it's wreaked on how we as a society perceive and decorate houses, if you're going to Zillow to search for the dated (which used to be like shooting fish in a barrel), you'll be searching aimlessly, for hours, to increasingly no avail, even with all the filters engaged. (The only way to get around this is locational knowledge of datedness gleaned from the real world.) If you try to find images of the dated elsewhere on the internet, you will find that the search is not intuitive. In this day and age, you cannot simply Google "80s hotel room" anymore, what with the disintegration of the search engine ecosystem and the AI generated nonsense and the algorithmic preference for something popular (the same specific images collected over and over again on social media), recent, and usually a derivative of the original search query (in this case, finding material along the lines of r/nostalgia or the Backrooms.)
To find what one is looking for online, one must game the search engine with filters that only show content predating 2021, or, even better, use existing resources (or those previously discovered) both online and in print. In the physical world of interiors, to find what one is looking for one must also now lurk around obscure places, and often outside the realm of the domestic which is so beholden to and cursed by the churn of fashion and the logic of speculation. Our open world is rapidly closing, while, paradoxically, remaining ostensibly open. It's true, I can open Zillow. I can still search. In the curated, aggregated realm, it is becoming harder and harder to find, and ultimately, to look.
But what if, despite all these changes, datedness was never really searchable? This is a strange symmetry, one could say an obscurity, between interiors and online. It is perhaps unintentional, and it lurks in the places where searching doesn't work, one because no one is searching there, or two, because an aesthetic, for all our cataloguing, curation, aggregation, hoarding, is not inherently indexable and even if it was, there are vasts swaths of the internet and the world that are not categorized via certain - or any - parameters. The internet curator's job is to find them and aggregate them, but it becomes harder and harder to do. They can only be stumbled upon or known in an outside, offline, historical or situational way. If to index, to aggregate, is, or at least was for the last 30 years, to profit (whether monetarily or in likes), then to be dated, in many respects, is the aesthetic manifestation of barely breaking even. Of not starting, preserving, or reinventing but just doing a job.
Tumblr media
We see this online as well. While the old-web Geocities look and later Blingee MySpace-era swag have become aestheticized and fetishized, a kind of naive art for a naive time, a great many old websites have not received the same treatment. These are no less naive but they are harder to repackage or commodify because they are simple and boring. They are not "core" enough.
As with interiors, web datedness can be found in part or as a whole. For example, sites like Imgur or Reddit are not in and of themselves dated but they are full of remnants, of 15-year old posts and their "you, sir, have won the internet" vernacular that certainly are. Other websites are dated because they were made a long time ago by and for a clientele that doesn't have a need or the skill to update (we see this often with Web 2.0 e-commerce sites that figured out how to do a basic mobile page and reckoned it was enough). The next language of datedness, like the all-white landlord-special interior, is the default, clean Squarespace restaurant page, a landing space that's the digital equivalent of a flyer, rarely gleaned unless someone needs a menu, has a food allergy or if information about the place is not available immediately from Google Maps. I say this only to maintain that there is a continuity in practices between the on- and off-line world beyond what we would immediately assume, and that we cannot blame everything on algorithms.
But now you may ask, what is, exactly, datedness? Having spent two days in a distinctly dated hotel room, I've decided to sit in utter boredom with the numinous past and try and pin it down.
Tumblr media
II.
I am in an obscure place. I am in Saint-Georges, Quebec, Canada, on assignment. I am staying at a specific motel, the Voyageur. By my estimation the hotel was originally built in the late seventies and I'd be shocked if it was older than 1989. The hotel exterior was remodeled sometime in the 2000s with EIFS cladding and beige paint. Above is a picture of my room, which, forgive me, is in the process of being inhabited. American (and to a lesser extent Canadian) hotel rooms are some of the most churned through, renovated spaces in the world, and it's pretty rare, unless you're staying in either very small towns or are forced by economic necessity to stay at real holes in the wall, to find ones from this era. The last real hitter for me was a 90s Day's Inn in the meme-famous Breezewood, PA during the pandemic.
At first my reaction to seeing the room was cautionary. It was the last room in town, and certainly compared to other options, probably not the world's first choice. However, after staying in real, genuine European shitholes covering professional cycling I've become a class-A connoisseur of bad rooms. This one was definitively three stars. A mutter of "okay time to do a quick look through." But upon further inspection (post-bedbug paranoia) I came to the realization that maybe the always-new brainrot I'd been so critical of had seeped a teeny bit into my own subconscious and here I was snubbing my nose at a blessing in disguise. The room is not a bad room, nor is it unclean. It's just old. It's dated. We are sentimental about interiors like this now because they are disappearing, but they are for my parents what 2005 beige-core is for me and what 2010s greige will become for the generation after. When I'm writing about datedness, I'm writing in general using a previous era's examples because datedness, by its very nature, is a transitional status. Its end state is the mixed emotion of seeing things for what they are yet still appreciating them, expressed here.
Tumblr media
Datedness is the period between vintage and contemporary. It is the sentiment between quotidian and subpar. It is uncurated and preserved only by way of inertia, not initiative. It gives us a specific feeling we don't necessarily like, one that is deliberately evoked in the media subcultures surrounding so-called "liminal" spaces: the fuguelike feeling of being spatially trapped in a time while our real time is passing. Datedness in the real world is not a curated experience, it is only what was. It is different from nostalgia because it is not deliberately remembered, yearned for or attached to sweetness. Instead, it is somehow annoying. It is like stumbling into the world of adults as a child, but now you're the adult and the child in you is disappointed. (The real child-you forgot a dull hotel room the moment something more interesting came along.) An image of my father puts his car keys on the table, looks around and says, "It'll do." We have an intolerance for datedness because it is the realization of what sufficed. Sufficiency in many ways implies lack.
Tumblr media
However, for all its datedness, many, if not all, of the things in this room will never be seen again if the room is renovated. They will become unpurchaseable and extinct. Things like the bizarrely-patterned linoleum tile in the shower, the hose connecting to the specific faucet of the once-luxurious (or at least middling) jacuzzi tub whose jets haven't been exercised since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The wide berth of the tank on the toilet. There is nothing, really, worth saving about these things. Even the most sentimental among us wouldn't dare argue that the items and finishes in this room are particularly important from a design or historical standpoint. Not everything old has a patina. They're too cheaply made to salvage. Plastic tile. Bowed plywood. The image-artifacts of these rooms, gussied up for Booking dot com, will also, inevitably disappear, relegated to the dustheap of web caches and comments that say "it was ok kinda expensive but close to twon (sic)." You wouldn't be able to find them anyway unless you were looking for a room.
Tumblr media
One does, of course, recognize a little bit of design in what's here. Signifiers of an era. The wood-veneer of the late 70s giving way to the pastel overtones of the 80s. Perhaps even a slow 90s. The all-in-one vanity floating above the floor, a modernist basement bathroom hallmark. White walls as a sign of cleanliness. Gestures, in the curved lines of the nightstands, towards postmodernity. Metallic lamp bases with wide-brimmed shades, a whisper of glamor. A kind of scalloped aura to the club chairs. The color teal mediated through hundreds if not thousands of shoes. Yellowing plastic, including the strips of "molding" that visually tie floor to wall. These are remnants (or are they intuitions?) of so many movements and micromovements, none of them definite enough to point to the influence of a single designer, hell, even of a single decade, just strands of past-ness accumulated into one thread, which is cheapness. Continuity exists in the materials only because everything was purchased as a set from a wholesale catalog.
Tumblr media
In some way a hotel is supposed to be placeless. Anonymous. Everything tries to be that way now, even houses. Perhaps because we don't like the way we spy on ourselves and lease our images out to the world so we crave the specificity of hotel anonymity, of someplace we move through on our way to bigger, better or at least different things. The hotel was designed to be frictionless but because it is in a little town, it sees little use and because it sees little use, there are elements that can last far longer than they were intended and which inadvertently cause friction. (The janky door unlocks with a key. The shower hose keeps coming out of the faucet. It's deeply annoying.)
Lack of wear and lack of funds only keep them that way. Not even the paper goods of the eighties have been exhausted yet. Datedness is not a choice but an inevitability. Because it is not a choice, it is not advertised except in a utilitarian sense. It is kept subtle on the hotel websites, out of shame. Because it does not subscribe to an advertiser's economy of the now, of the curated type rather than the "here is my service" type, it disappears into the folds of the earth and cannot be searched for in the way "design" can. It can only be discovered by accident.
Tumblr media
When I look at all of these objects and things, I do so knowing I will never see them again, at least not all here together like this, as a cohesive whole assembled for a specific purpose. I don't think I'll ever have reason to come back to this town or this place, which has given me an unexpected experience of being peevish in my father's time. Whenever I end up in a place like this, where all is as it was, I get the sense that it will take a very long time for others to experience this sensation again with the things my generation has made. The machinations of fashion work rapaciously to make sure that nothing is ever old, not people, not rooms, not items, not furniture, not fabrics, not even design, that old matron who loves to wax poetic about futurity and timelessness. The plastic-veneered particleboard used here is now the bedrock of countless landfills. Eventually it will become the chemical-laced soil upon which we build our condos. It is possible that we are standing now at the very last frontier of our prior datedness. The next one has not yet elided. It's a special place. Spend a night. Take pictures.

do you believe everything the media and photographs tell you to believe?
if so, this is a post that isn't for you.
[also, I went with the autocomplete in the image, which is why Nicola's name is spelled incorrectly in the search, jsyk]
I wanted to call out that the first three top stories links on Google have Nicola Coughlan linked to Jake Dunn. Each link is to a news source that has no credible source to rely on. Terms such as "rumored"; "seem to confirm" and "believed to be" are used. One of the stories claims to have reached out to Nicola's and Jake's teams for comment, but there's no mention of any responses.
I think it's interesting to note that while the first paragraph or so of each of these articles summarize what's been photographed of Jake and Nicola – which I would argue are moments between friends, much like her interactions with Luke Thompson, Jack Rooke, and Mark Peacock – but aren't able to state anything more in the articles. The articles then diverge into information and previously quoted material from Coughlan about her relationship with who? Luke Newton. Because that's the only relationship she's ever openly spoken about to media sources.
We can continue to split microscopic hairs, but Nicola has never directly answered the question of whether she's solely friends with Luke Newton. She cleverly walks around the question, in the hopes that many will just assume she's friends and nothing more. Which is what a lot of people are doing. And that's their prerogative to do so.
In doing further reading about PR practices, I ran across a post from The Chi Group that discussed a couple of ways that public figures work to combat misinformation about them without making explicit statements:
"Pinning Corrective Posts: Pinning a correction or accurate update to the top of a social media profile can ensure that followers see the correct information first."
Okay, so what does Nicola have pinned to her Instagram post? Her own achievements in the media spheres as of late, where she noticeably mentions Luke Newton, even when it isn't within an ideal context to do so. And as always, the Bridgerton Season 3 promo post. Nothing about relationships or anything hinting to a connection with Jake Dunn.
"Search engine optimization (SEO) is a powerful tool in ensuring that accurate information surfaces in search results, rather than misleading or false content. PR professionals can optimize their content by:
Using Relevant Keywords: Including keywords that users might search when looking for information on a topic can help ensure that accurate content appears in search results.
Publishing on Authoritative Websites: Contributing articles or guest blogs to reputable sites can boost the visibility and credibility of the accurate narrative.
Regularly Updating Content: Keeping web pages updated with the latest information ensures that search engines recognize the content as current and relevant, helping it rank higher."
So the SEO is pushing Jake and Nicola together here in regards to relationship searching, and where Luke Newton has scrubbed SEO information linking him to Antonia, Nicola hasn't done that. I don't think she feels the need when, as stated above, the articles can't seem to gather much about her and Jake Dunn in the first place and revert back to talking about her 'gorgeous' relationship with Luke Newton.
Re: publishing on authoratative websites. The first three sources are from People Magazine, Yahoo reposting an article from Glamour, and The Sun. I certainly don't turn to these outlets for authoritative news, and I hope you don't either.
Re: regularly updating content. Can you point me in the direction of any content published by Nicola Coughlan's social media accounts that provides the latest information about her and Jake Dunn?
I rest my case.

I’m an 19 year old jock, brown hair, brown eyes. Could you send a copy of the Dukes of Hazzard Seasons? I really like Bo Duke from the show. Something about his himbo redneck charm just makes me fall for him.
Your Be Kind Rewind tape and die have arrived! You roll the die because the web site said you should, but when you roll a 1, nothing happens. You shrug and pop the Dukes of Hazzard tape into your VCR, hitting rewind so you can make sure to catch every moment from the beginning.
As the tape begins to rewind, you think about how you always kinda thought it made more sense for Bo to be gay, or at least bi. He certainly always seemed to prefer the company of Luke to any of the women in his life. You figured he needed a wild, rough-and-tumble redneck guy who could show up in his life and shake him out of his heteronormative upbringing, show him how different it can be to have a little fun with another willing guy.
Unfortunately, that someone can’t be you. Bo’s not real, first of all. But more importantly, you’re too much of a clean-cut jock for that. You think back to your latest game, and how great the uniforms made the asses of the other players look. Especially that one guy - what was his name? you can’t remember - when he was going to make a… basket? Field goal? What sport do you play again? You shake your head as your memories go fuzzy like an old television that needs adjusting.
You decide to reboot your memory by tracking back to the most recent thing you remember and working your way back to the present from there. You cycle through the fuzzy colors and blurry shapes until you hit on something. Siphoning gas from the sheriff’s tank so you could go on a joy ride. Now that memory is very clear, thankfully. What did you do after that?
As you ponder, you feel a tickling on the back of your neck as your hair grows, slithering down in a greasy tangle. The tickling hits your shoulders, and then your mid-back. You shake your head and your mullet flutters against your back. God, you love that feeling. It was hard-earned, too, it took you years to grow all that shit out.
The next memory falls into place. Going mudding with some of your cousins the day after your joy ride. What a good time! You shake your head again and the tickling transfers to the front of your face as a greasy brown beard drapes from your sideburns down across to your chin, a mustache sprouting as the cherry on top of the unkempt, disheveled sundae.
You stroke your beard as you smile and remember going cow-tipping the next day. You picked the biggest cow, of course, to prove how strong you are… While you think about your prowess, your athletic muscles actually shrink down a bit, leaving you with skinny arms and a slim torso where your ribs are in plain sight.
Getting hot, you remove your shirt and stuff it in your back pocket. Your memories are finally traced back to the game you were trying to remember… That game of darts you were playing at the local bar the other night. God, Buck’s arms looked so daggum delicious in that sleeveless denim shirt. You scratch your chest and light brown hair swirls in a spiral pattern from around your nipples, eventually spreading across your entire torso.
And that last memory brings you back to the present… what was it you were doing right now? You were getting ready to watch something, right? It was a… A… You wanted to watch the sunset from Makeout Point, yeah that’s what it was. But you didn’t want to go alone, which is why you parked your truck here by the local bar. You look around to see a serene roadside bar, the trees gently swaying in the humid breeze. You wipe sweat from your forehead, glad you already took your shirt off so you aren’t feeling too overheated. It’s been a loooooong, hot summer.
Suddenly the squeal of tires distracts you from your reverie. A slick car pulls up and out climbs the most handsome blond guy you’ve ever seen in your life.
Tumblr media
You chuckle to yourself. This guy is a hunk of all-American beef, but you can see a little sugar in ‘im. You know he’d be willing to experiment if a stud like you showed him the ropes. He wouldn’t be able to resist your sexual magnetism. You spit on the ground, then whistle, catching his attention. He looks over at you and you wink. “What’s your name, pardner?” you ask.

How do you go about researching stuff that's supposed to be a character's interest/hobby? Like for example if my character is an artist but i don't really know anything about art, how do i write this character's opinions + likes and dislikes ab art?
Researching and Portraying Interests/Hobbies
First, when considering your character's interests/hobbies, it's always worth thinking about what role these are going to play in the actual story. If your character's knowledge, opinions, preferences, and activities as an artist play a critical role in the story, it's certainly important to flesh them out. However, if they're just there to give your character dimension, you really don't need to become an expert on the interest/hobby.
In either case--whether it plays a critical role or is just there for character dimension--sit down and consider the scenes in which this background will be on display. Or, in other words, which moments or events will this background come into play? For example, if your character is at a party at an art gallery, that's an obvious place where their knowledge and opinions might come out in thought or dialogue. Let's say there's also a scene where your character is helping another character choose a dress for a special event. That's another place where this artistic background might come into play. So, instead of doing a lot of broad research on art and what opinions, knowledge, or preferences an artist might have, you can now research what's important in that specific moment.
So, for the art gallery scene, you could start by researching local art galleries to see what they're like. Famous art galleries sometimes have virtual tours on their web sites, or you might find video tours on YouTube. Putting yourself "inside" an art gallery will help you see what your character would see so you can start imagining what they might be thinking about or talking about in that setting. Maybe you want them to comment on the art of a particular painter--so you could research "famous painters" and choose one to read a little bit about. Then, you could choose a particular painting by this artist that might be hanging in that gallery and you can research it to learn about the painting, its composition, its meaning, etc. This can help you formulate some ideas about what your character might say or think about the artist or specific painting. You could also use real artists and their artwork as inspiration for a fictional artist/painting if you wanted to.
For the dress shopping scene, maybe your character's artistic background gives them a good sense of what colors go well together, so you could do a little research to find that out. Or, maybe their artistic background lets them recognize that a particular dress looks like a particular painting style or a particular artist's work. In that case, you can go back to the "famous painters" research and choose one to have your character think or say the dress is reminiscent of. For example, it could be as simple as your character saying, "Try on the blue and green dress that looks like a Monet painting on a sugar high."
By narrowing down the specific points in the story where the background will come into play, and by knowing exactly what your character needs to say, think, or feel according to this background, you can narrow down your research significantly. :)

Ignorance — Omen x Cypher
2.8k words ~ smut
Cypher confronts Omen about a previous misunderstanding, leading to another passionate night of romance and the beginning of something sweet.
part one here.
~
They both stood outside the training room, waiting for the bots to reset and the doors to open. Omen made an art of avoiding Cypher’s gaze. Or perhaps it was his lack of eyes. Cypher nudged him.
“Shall I play attack or defense?” He asked lightly. He would rather confront Omen about the way he abandoned him after cumming inside of him and avoiding him for the last two days, but Brimstone was monitoring them.
“Attack.”
A man of few words, as per usual.
There was a blaring beep, then the doors pulled open. They stepped through together, and as soon as the doors shut Omen disappeared in his web of dark smoke. Show off.
Omen was more aggressive than he when it came to attacks, and certainly their abilities showed that. For Cypher to play attack, he would have to rely on his sharp wit and keen aim.
With a fake spike and gun in hand, Cypher traversed the constructed atmosphere, checking every corner for danger. Omen was elusive, but Cypher was highly aware of his surroundings. He wouldn’t lose.
He made it to the fake site without seeing him. He planted the spike, reveled in his advantage, set up his various devices, and hid somewhere he hoped Omen would not expect. Waiting in silence, he watched from the eye of his camera. He smiled seeing Omen enter the site, checking everywhere. Until he teleported out of view.
He looked away from his camera only to find Omen in front of him, knife flashing. Cypher attempted to act quickly, but Omen took him by the throat. His knife tapped against his mask.
“You rely too heavily on your devices,” Omen murmured. Cypher could only think about the way his lips felt on his, remembering how the tip of his dick glowed as blue as the three jagged slashes down his face.
Then, for only a moment, Omen showed Cypher his eyes. He could practically see the playful smile in them. He glared at the blue eyes, narrowing his own robotic ones, wondering how he had the gall to tease him like this.
Cypher pushed him back, directly into a tripwire he had placed. Omen tried to struggle free, teleport away, but was stuck. It was Cypher’s turn to smile.
“My friend, you must not tease the enemy. Otherwise, you lose the game.”
The fake spike started beeping urgently louder. Omen pulled out his pistol, shot the wire, and ran to it to try and diffuse quickly. Cypher just watched as it blew up in his face, though it was only a hologram.
Brimstone's gravelly voice played over the intercom.
“Alright you two, run it again. And take it seriously this time.”
-
They were walking in the hallway next to one another, both exhausted from hours of training and getting lectured at.
“I’m surprised you do not disappear from me,” Cypher chuckled.
Omen did not respond. Cypher sighed.
When Omen turned to go to his own quarters, Cypher followed. Neither of them said a word. It was not until Omen was at his door, unlocking it with his thumbprint, that he hesitated.
“What is it, Aamir?” He growled in his dark voice.
Cypher smiled under his mask, “May I come in?”
Omen wordlessly let him through the door. He panned the hallways quickly before shutting it.
Omen’s room was as lifeless as he was, with no personal touch for Cypher to rest his eyes on. It seemed as if no one were living there at all. The standard gray bed with black sheets, a black wardrobe, black dressers void of anything on top except—
Cypher approached one of the dressers which had a hint of color peeking out of the drawers. a string of yarn. He opened the drawer. Inside were balls of yarn, various sizes of knitting needles, and even a half finished piece which he could not figure out.
“Ah, I thought I had heard from Sage that you were a knitter.”
Omen slammed the drawer shut from behind him. “Do not invade my personal privacy.”
“Omen,” Cypher turned around, leaning on the dresser, finding Omen standing close to him, “Let’s clear the air. You seem to regret it, no?”
“Regret what?” He walked away.
“The sex.”
“No.”
“Then what is this, hm? You avoid me, you do not speak to me, you leave me alone and naked seconds before Neon explodes through the door.”
Omen slowly unwrapped the bandages from his arms, revealing veins of blue light running up his forearms. Cypher watched him as he did not speak, as he discarded the bandages and tossed his gloves aside.
“Omen, you must speak to me.”
“I don’t regret it.”
He sat on his bed, taking off his boots.
“Then why do you avoid me?”
He stood, approaching Cypher again. His hands found his waist, surprising Cypher.
“I thought you would be angry that I left.”
“I was more angry you did not apologize.”
“Sorry.”
Omen’s face leaned closer, his lightning blue eyes returning to his face from the slashes. His hand reached up to his jaw, gently touching the cool metal of his mask.
“Show me your face.”
“How can I say no when you ask so politely, hm?” He chuckled, letting it fold away. He grabbed the small piece of metal it became and slipped it into his pocket.
Omen pressed against him, his hand on his cheek, studying him. Cypher felt a bulge against his thigh.
He leaned close and gently kissed his jaw, the blue of his eyes disappearing as he presumably closed them. He kissed his neck hotly, Cypher tilting his head as far back as it would go with the welcome contact.
“You still choose not to speak?” Cypher chuckled, “Such a silent man.”
Omen released a low grumble in response. Cypher grabbed Omen’s face, bringing it up to meet him. After searching for them, he slipped his thumbs in the corners of his lips, drawing out a smile. He wasn’t expecting how creepy it would be, with only his pearly white teeth and fangs visible under his flickering eyes. His jaw opened, sharp blue tongue peeking out.
“Why do you hide this face, hm?” Cypher tilted his head. “It is quite scary.”
Omen licked his lips and shook free from his grasp.
“It is mine and mine alone.”
He suddenly lifted Cypher up, having him sat on the dresser and pressed into the wall. He started grabbing at his coat, trying to peel away the layers of his clothes. Cypher grabbed his own hat and tossed it aside.
“Well, I’ve seen it,” Cypher said between undressing his layers.
Omen ran his ghostly hands up Cypher’s body, his upper torso now bare. “Then it is ours.”
Despite himself Cypher felt butterflies burst forth from his stomach to his throat, his throat where Omen returned to pepper him in kisses and suck gently on his sensitive skin. His hands kept squeezing his thighs, playing with his belt and waistband, inching down his zipper.
Cypher threw his arms around Omen’s shoulders, lightly gripping his cloak. He sighed airily.
He yanked his pants down further, just enough for the base of his dick to be visible. Omen slipped his hand over the base, digging in his pants, and began slowly stroking him downwards. There wasn’t much room and the angle was awkward, which made Cypher antsy and wanting more. He wanted a firmer grip, faster movement.
A hint of Omen’s name escaped him as he moaned lightly. Omen made a low noise in response, like the gentle hum of a machine.
Cypher squirmed, mumbling, “Omen, take me to your bed, won’t you?”
Without hesitation he was scooped into Omen’s arms, suddenly looking down into his upturned face as he held him up with ease. Cypher laughed, feeling giddy from being held so high. His head brushed the ceiling, which made him duck and lean towards Omen’s face. They kissed softly.
The bed creaked with the force of Cypher falling on it. Without a second to waste Omen had completely undressed him, and he looked at him as if every centimeter of his skin was his to conquer. Cypher tilted his head back, anticipating his next move, staring him down in challenge.
Cold fingers ran along his skin, skin raked with scars and blemishes and hair, dark skin that hadn’t seen the sun since joining the protocol. Omen’s unearthly hands met with him as he climbed above him, laying on him to kiss him fiercely.
Cypher’s legs and arms wrapped around him, drawing him even closer. His metal torso felt cold, except for the center light that warmed his own chest. He could not keep his hands away from the phantom body, feeling the strong arms, the glowing veins, the warm smoke everywhere. He could drown in the darkness. He wanted to. Omen kissed him so aggressively he felt he was already suffocating. An aphrodisiacal mist that enveloped him.
Omen pulled himself up suddenly, and unzipped his pants. His black cock jumped from his zipper, waving like a flag above Cypher. He saw the glowing blue tip, the veins creeping down the shaft, and it thrilled him.
He sat up, grabbing Omen by his thighs. They were smooth and solid, rippling with hidden muscle. His mouth found the glowing tip, and without a word he swallowed Omen.
To his delight, Omen made a startled moan, like the low rumble of thunder clouds in the distance. Cypher downed his thick cock as far as he could manage, gripping the rest tightly with his fist. He moved his head back and forth, but apparently it was not fast enough for Omen.
After only minutes of effort, Omen threaded his fingers in Cypher’s deep brown curls, and he held him tight as he started thrusting into his mouth.
He had a focused gaze, as cloudy as his mist. Cypher flattened his tongue, opened as wide as he could. Already his jaw ached. He could feel the back of his throat getting hammered, and it was uncomfortable. But Omen looked ethereal in his pleasure. He seemed so big in comparison to him, in presence and stature.
It hurt his neck and throat. His eyes watered. He was relentless, constant pushing, pushing, pushing, moaning and grunting. Cypher could only look up at him, pinching his eyebrows at the discomfort, watching those orbs of light squint down from above. For a moment, he saw Omen lick his teeth, purposely flashing them down at him. He narrowed his eyes.
Suddenly he ripped his head off him, and pulling him up by the hair he smashed their faces together to kiss hard. Cypher could not breathe, and he felt dizzy from the sudden jerk. He gasped against his face, inhaling the dark smoke of his skin. He smelled like a rainy night. He felt Omen stroking himself vigorously, bumping his thigh as they were knelt on the bed.
“Aamir,” He growled against his lips, only a breath apart. Cypher wanted to explode. He grabbed his own dick and stroked furiously in time with Omen. He moaned in his mouth as they touched their filthy tongues with one another.
Omen collided with him. His head fell against his shoulder, and Cypher screamed in pain as he felt his fangs digging into his flesh. Omen came on his stomach and thigh. The bite made Cypher cum too. They moaned and gasped, turning stiff, shaking with their orgasms, dripping on each other. Tensing and relaxing. Trembling. Pushing their heads against one another as they rode their highs.
Omen raised his face to Cypher’s and gave him another kiss. Cypher could just barely hear his gentle pants under his heavy breaths. Hot air pushed against his face.
“Omen…” He sighed.
For only a few moment more, Omen held him, touching his face, running his fingers down his back. It was enough time for them to come to their senses.
Then with a rough push Cypher was on the bed again. He was thrown on his stomach, legs were pushed apart, his hips pulled back. He felt like a ragdoll. Anticipating more, he grabbed the headboard for stability.
Omen’s sharp claws dug into his ass, pulling it apart. Cypher’s face burned with embarrassment, imaging what he looked like in such a compromising position. He felt the wet tip of Omen’s dick sliding against him as he leaned over, his head just over his shoulder. Whispering, he told him, “We are not done.”
Cypher shivered.
Omen kissed his shoulder, on the bloody bite mark which scarred him. He went down his back, stopping to leave hickeys along the way. It was surprisingly gentle, but Cypher knew he was biding his time until he got hard again. And it did not take long until he felt his erection pushing on his ass. Not long enough for Cypher to recuperate.
“Omen— Ah—“
He felt his dick rip into his asshole, filling him with explosive pain. He groaned, gripping the headboard tightly. He could feel how tight he was around Omen, who moaned in appreciation. He kept whining in protest.
“You are such an impatient man,” Cypher grimaced.
He could hear the smirk in Omen’s voice. “Watch me.”
Immediately he was going, and in only a few thrusts the bed was shaking and Cypher was scrambling to keep his balance. He tried not to scream, but it was hard to hold back his voice. Omen put it in raw, all at once, and was slamming him. Cypher turned for a moment to see over his shoulder. Omen’s hood was off, revealing his flickering black head like the flame of a candle. Cypher smiled at him. Omen’s eyes narrowed. He was thrusting so hard the bed hit the wall, their bodies slapped together, Cypher felt like a drill was piercing through him.
Finally, Cypher adjusted to it. He felt the blood rushing back into his dick, the pleasure of Omen inside him. He whimpered like a bitch, enjoying the rough way Omen treated him. His muscles relaxed, his back dipping lower, anticipating the thrusts by pushing back against Omen.
Omen kept digging his nails into his hips, squeezing his skin like putty. It made Cypher’s eyelids flutter. He pressed his forehead against the headrest. Hearing the way Omen moaned made Cypher’s dick drip with precum. It stained the bed. Neither of them cared. They were already stained with cum, on each other. Omen’s was tinged with blue.
It was not long before they both were edging towards that point again, though Cypher was not as prepared as Omen.
Omen grunted, huffed and moaned. Cypher was afraid the bed would break; or worse, his back. His legs were shaking fiercely. Most of his body was being supported by Omen’s iron grip, which only became tighter as Omen got closer to finishing.
He felt it in him, as Omen didn’t bother to warn him. Omen growled with every gasp of air, quickly finishing himself off in Cypher’s ass. Cypher melted against the bed, falling over as Omen pulled out. He felt the cum escaping him, which made him shiver.
Omen veered at him menacingly, still knelt over him, still watching him intimidatingly. Cypher glanced at him. His body was exhausted, even if he was still hard. He felt like he had just ridden a very bumpy roller coaster. Omen was not satisfied with that, though.
He turned Cypher on his back, though it was not nearly as rough as before. He stroked Cypher as he bent down in front of him. His eyes looked softer.
He saw the blue tongue peeking out of his shadowy face, and Cypher nearly came from excitement at seeing it. It wrapped around his cock wetly, then disappeared as Omen bobbed his head over it. Cypher pressed his hands over his face, moaning deeply, his legs twitching and body jerking. Omen’s mouth was as hot as lava. It drove him crazy. His tongue perfectly rubbed against his tip. It unraveled him like a thread.
“Omen…” He begged for nothing. “Omen…”
Omen gave him more than he could handle. He did not warn him.
Omen made a noise of surprise, backing his head off of him. He coughed, spat on him and the bed. Cypher gave a shuddering moan, every muscle tensed in him, pressing his hands against his mouth. His thighs trembled on either side of Omen’s head.
He mumbled one last, “Omen…” He peered at the ghostly man, who stared at him back.
“The bed is a mess, hm?” Cypher chuckled weakly.
Omen stood and bundled up the comforter from his bed, placing it in his bathroom. He came back with a wet washcloth, which he used to wipe himself up, then Cypher. Cypher trembled at his touch, still feeling sensitive around his dick. Then Omen laid next to him. He lounged against the headrest, hands behind his head. Cypher leaned his head against his shoulder, and Omen put his arm around him.
“Omen,” Cypher said.
“Hm?” Omen rumbled.
“That was fun.”
Omen only nodded in response.
“Are you going to disappear again?”
“I’m already in my room.”
Cypher chuckled, “It was joke.”
Tired, Cypher settled in next to him. Omen threw his sheet over Cypher, sensing his exhaustion. He fell asleep holding Omen.

The trouble with the mdzs fandom tags on this webbed site is that to scroll through them or to follow them is a lot like dumpster diving. some people's trash is others people's treasure etc etc. but the thing is.... there's sooooo much stuff that it's impossible to block all the unwanted stuff from getting onto your blog.
I used to be deeply meh about jiang cheng. But just scrolling the tags and trying to reblog nice art and some fun takes has radicalized me. I've had the jiang cheng tag blocked forever. He's always been the one who dragged in the worst opinions and most extreme takes on both sides. But it's just impossible to escape him seeping into the other tags.
Ive seen about ten odd hot takes about him just tonight that forced me to once again think of him.
So while we're here, I'm going to add to the pile of opinions. This isn't well thought out criticism or analysis, just some ramblings about the most polarizing character I've literally ever seen in my 16 years in fandom. This is obviously about novel Jiang Cheng, never watched the show, don't care to.
The thing about jc that I'm always surprised by is how much people care about the guy. Don't get me wrong, he's an absolutely fascinating character and kudos to mxtx for always adding the most layers to her character building. But he's just a really fucking unlikeable guy almost objectively. Most people are straight up scared of him or find him unpleasant to deal with. The only major positive interactions we really ever see are with jiang yanli, jin ling and wwx. And the wwx ones are always riddled with sharp words and unpleasant language although half joking in places(certainly not fully joking with the amount of insecurities the guy is riddled with). Just an all round piece of work.
And the thing is, there wasnt a moment in the book that i sat and thought about how bad he has it, because EVERYONE that came out of that situation had it fucking bad. And if we're gonna play the trauma-lympics, he really isn't even in the top three. So, at the end of it, when I joined fandom, I was really just struck by the no. of people who could spend all their time either hating him or loving him. I'm just intrigued by what makes jiang cheng so particularly polarizing.
But at the end of the day I'm no one to yuck someone else's yum in fandom. Toxic men with mommy issues have been a staple of fictional obsessions forever and it'll continue that way. I do wish people would tag better and that the fandom would embrace the ooc tag, but that ship was burnt before it ever set sail. So, I guess I'll just keep playing dodge and blocking people for as long as i'm still here.

If I may be weird and petty for a moment, I don't get AUs where Martin is the Archivist when Melanie and Sasha are right there?? I mean I get why: roleswaps are popular AUs and martin is a popular character. And maybe its just my specific headcanons re: archivist requirements but I feel like the other two would be so much better?
Yes, Martin reads statements and yes, he gets marked, but I really don't think those are the Only Requirements to do the big ritual? Cause at that point Elias could've chosen any web-marked dude off the street, especially if they have the mark of another entity as well already.
Melanie and Sasha shared several important traits with Jon, most notably a burning curiosity, a willingness to put themselves in trouble for information, and (in Melanie's case (and Sasha's too, arguably) an ability to antagonize extremely dangerous fear avatars. Sasha's whole statement is her putting herself in a dangerous situation without telling anyone or acquiring any help (remind you of any main characters?) and running face first into supernatural dangers (sometimes to protect her friends, sometimes out of curiosity). Useful for collecting marks, but also useful for collecting information and developing her own powers as the Archivist. Considering her seemingly unrepentant willingness to look through her friends' and coworkers' personal files via accessing their accounts, I'd argue that her curiosity and boundary crossing could easily get stronger when investigating supernatural entities. Obviously, this never happened because of how early on she died, but I think you could make a strong case for Sasha's strong curiosity making some avatars incredibly mad. Not to mention how incredibly Beholding it is of her. None of this is criticism btw, I think Sasha should have access to whatever personal info she wants and I love it when characters are so obviously Eye-aligned. I know "Sasha wasn't promoted because she'd solve all the problems and find a way to kill Jonah" is also a popular headcanon but please think for a MOMENT about her appearances in podcast. There weren't many, but there's a very obvious through-line in almost all of them. She's curious, she takes risks in the face of the supernatural, she wants to Know. It's literally what caused the circumstances of her statement. Those traits are arguably the ones that got her KILLED. I'm sorry this went off on a tangent. I just love Sasha very much and I'm constantly filled with Thoughts of Sasha.
Melanie also has curiosity about the supernatural AND a much more obviously antagonistic personality!! Her first appearance is being a total asshole to Jon, mocking him, the place he works at, the equipment they use, and what they do. But she also dedicated basically her entire career into uncovering the supernatural? She ran a Youtube channel about it, and when she discovered that everyone was sticking to the same "safe" sites, she started looking off the beaten path for the real stuff. And she found it! She went looking for ghosts of war and violence and even without access to statements, probably working alone and sifting through bunk on the internet, she found them! She got stabbed by a ghost and instead of trying to avoid ghosts in the future, she decided to look for more violent ghosts. The slaughter tendencies might be a drawback for her becoming the Archivist, yes, but by that point Jon had already survived multiple marks and was developing his powers. If he failed by that point, Elias might've wanted an Archivist who'd be better able to defend themselves. By S4 Melanie was probably far enough gone to the Slaughter (and hated the Eye enough) that she was probably off the table as a candidate. By that point, however, Jon was expected to fully Become and only needed a few more marks.
I understand that Sasha was approved for a transfer to the Archives because Elias let Jon choose who take with him and Jon chose Sasha. And Melanie was almost certainly chosen to keep Jon in close proximity of a Slaughter-aligned person who'd be likely to mark him but unlikely to kill him. But I think that they served a secondary purpose of being backup Archivists in case something happened to Jon.
Obviously this is more headcanon than theory (not to mention it relies on other headcanons to fully stand) but I'm very fond of it. I guess I think that, even if Elias wasn't really looking for another Archivist when Jon seems like the perfect candidate in every way (and I'm not saying this JUST because I love him), I think that if something did happen to Jon, they'd be Elias' next candidates.

The Beauty Inside (2015) Review & General Thoughts
That’s right, I’m reviewing a K-Movie and not a K-Drama.
As a disclaimer, I haven’t seen the original American web-series from 2012 nor the K-Drama that resulted from this movie, so I’m reviewing this movie as it’s own entity and not on how good of a remake/adaptation it is.
As always, this is going to be spoiler free!
Tumblr media
Genre(s)
Romance • Fantasy • Melodrama • Drama
Ratings
Rated PG on Viki, rated as 13+ on MDL, rated PG-14 on tubi and YouTube
Where To Watch/How To Watch
Viki • iQIYI • Prime Video • tubi • YouTube • Kocowa+ • Prime Video • Freevee • Rent for $3.99 or Buy for $6.99 on Apple TV • Pluto TV
(You can watch it FOR FREE on Tubi, Youtube, Freevee and Pluto TV with ads, as well as, of course, your favorite illegal streaming site of choice)
Note: I live in the United States, so the only platforms that I have access to and know for sure currently have this movie available in the region are the ones listed, but it’s possible other regions have apps that have this.
Synopsis
This movie is about Woo Jin, a man who designs furniture for a living. An unusual man, Woo Jin wakes up every morning with a new body, which can be any age, gender, race or nationality.
Accustomed to his supernatural “illness,” he lives a relatively solitary existence aside from his childhood best friend who he works with and occasionally visiting his mother.
When he meets Yi Soo one day at a furniture store, he instantly falls in love with her. After visiting her as different people for several days, he eventually musters up the courage to ask her out. Staying up for three days in a row in order to stay in the same body, he dates her and she ends up falling in love with him.
Review
This movie is really good! If you’ve been sitting on this movie wondering if you should watch it, I’m going to have to tell you that it’s very much worth watching (and doing so again and again!)
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, so much so that I wound up rewatching it immediately after finishing the first watch of it!
All of the actors who played Kim Woo Jin did a truly great job of creating a consistent character for him, which really must have been challenging considering all the actors who play him only do so for such an incredibly brief window of time. The only one who lasts more than a day is Park Seo Joon.
Han Hyo Joo was AMAZING, she absolutely nailed her role and it’s so easy to see why Woo Jin fell in love with her character. I feel like this movie really allowed her to show off her various talents as an actor because she had great chemistry with each of the different Woo Jin, she spoke in three different languages (Korean, Japanese, and English) that she is proficient in, and did a fantastic job of making her character come to life and be someone the audience can sympathize with and fall in love with too.
The OST is really good (in my opinion) and nothing really felt too out of place or anything.
I love the message(s) of this movie, which boil down to “love is love” and loving someone for who they are on the inside and not based on their outward appearances. It’s nothing particularly novel, but it was certainly tackled in novel way!
General Thoughts
This movie went to theaters in my country on my birthday eight years ago and I really wish I had been into K-Dramas and stuff back then because I soo would have watched this and would have thoroughly enjoyed it. It might even have been one of those things that made me realize that I’m bi lol
Anyway, this movie had a lot of cute, sweet moments and I always love a couple who bond over a shared love of something (furniture, in this case). There were so many scenes that made my bi heart flutter!
For being technically a heterosexual movie, this is incredibly bisexual/pansexual and I’m quite sure it was fully intentional to be LGBTQIA+ because the font coloring for the movie is rainbow:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, I loved by the way. Love a good rainbow gradient colored font. But also they didn’t at all shy away from having some GL scenes in there! Han Hyo Joo really had such amazing chemistry with all of the actors in the role of Woo Jin, which helped make it that much more believable that they were all the same character.
Tumblr media
As for the OST, I definitely came away from this movie wanting to hear “True Romance” by Citizens! over and over again:
Advice(?)
Definitely make sure to grab some tissues, there’s some scenes in this movie that will definitely make you cry!
Additionally, once the credits roll, don’t go away! This movie actually has a mid-credits scene, no spoilers, but it’s a nice little wrap up and worth sitting through the credits a little longer for!

The Digital American Dream;
I think one thing which surprises me about the new web, is that there used to be this unspoken rule (or spoken, depending on how strict of an area you were in, ha!) - "The interweb is a privilege, not a right". This extended to IRC and the likes. On today's web, that's just not true - it's no longer a nerdy hobbyist activity, it's seen as normal - or even required - to be on the internet for some hours of the day.
I think that the main thing which bothers me with this, is the way it's warped how we interract with the web - when it was pure hobbyism, I would post about obscure games with all of my heart. Not for any real reason other than passion, and a connection to others. In today's corporate internet, there's this idea that you must post to get notes to make it big, that you'll get money, sales, attention - but is it worth giving up your livelihood? How many people truly 'make it big'? Not enough to trade it for posting for the joy of it all.
I get it - I'm disabled, 'making money from posting art' sounded incredibly tantalising. I got caught up in that rat-race for two terrible years - I started to hate making art, I was miserable. I had to keep up with the ever-changing medium of Social Media, warping and bending to whatever the new trend was, in the hopes that somebody would commission me, buy from my store. Except... I had always found more success in more standard freelance work. You need to have at least one past employer to be viable - but that could be anything. LinkedIn is a fantastic place to find freelance work, and there are millions of networks in your country which you can join. "This individual seller wants artwork for stickers, this business wants a new mascot design, so on" - you don't NEED to be on Social Media to get money from an artistic carreer, and you certainly don't need to subject yourself to the hells of spending every drop of energy into being popular online. In fact, most of my commissions come from friends, and friends-of-friends. Just knowing people by being passionate about the things I love, has netted me more commisisons than thousands of followers ever has. Even when my artwork sits and gets 2-3 notes some days, I can get steady commissions, because people know my name and style.
They want to sell you this idea of this digital "American Dream", that YOU, TOO, could be one of these great and successful people! - See, if you post things which get a lot of attention, it brings more eyes on their site, more reason to keep you on to look at more advertisements, more stocks - "look at how well we're doing!" - what care they of the eroding of the psyche that comes with monetising your every waking moment?
Break free of your binds. Create things on the interweb - not out of a need, but because you would like to do it. Your time is not some product to be bought and sold.

All of the information from your devices has been automatically replicated to my hosting space.
I have access to all your cellphone messengers, social media sites, emails, chats, and contact information.
My virus regularly changes its personal signature (driver-based), so it remains unnoticeable to anti-virus computer software. I imagine now you realize, why I stayed unseen right until this current day
Whilst collecting information with regards to you, I found that you're a huge follower of porn web sites & more.
You really love to stop by adult web sites and view kinky vids whilst getting an ejaculation.
I have already created a web cam capturing videos of you wanking off. The editing of the videos you were viewing at the time & your masturbation. Your own face is distinctly seeable. I do not believe this particular content would be great for your status. I can certainly send this footage to everyone who know your identity.

I provide you with three days to send me the money.
The time launched monitoring instantly once you opened the letter. I will get a notification the minute this email is opened.
Don't try and search for help, as the payment address can't be monitored, address the letter is coming from and can't be tracked either and created automatically, so there's no reason for writing to me. Do not attempt to get in touch with the authorities & other protection solutions, and if you do, your personal information will be posted.

"There are important differences between creating a work in homage or even creating things based off an existing work and being included in a data set to be pulled apart and reused, particularly in a for-profit context which this most definitely is"
There are, but those distinctions are not relevant to me because they don't change what I believe. If your work is included in a data set to be pulled apart and re-used, it's not actually taking anything that you physically have, the atoms and molecules you wrote your work on are still there so nothing was stolen from you. I think that it's philosophically incoherent to consider copying to be in any way equivalent to theft.
Not sure why you're sending this as an ask. I think that you saying that writing fanfiction and then building a for-profit algorithm trained on that freely available information are exactly the same is important context, but I'm willing to hone in on this part.
I'll set aside for the moment the issue of whether something digital can be stolen at all. I'd argue that a copy of private information is still stolen information even if I've lost no physical possession in the process, but this discussion does originate in the realm of works on AO3 being fed to Musk's OpenAI as a corpus so none of that can really be said to be private, even if nobody opted into having their work included in the data set. It should also not be forgotten that there is a not insignificant amount of genuinely original fiction posted to AO3. There is work being fed into these data sets which is not written about another person's characters or concepts. As the article in the original thread pointed out, training a GPT-3 based writing program on AO3 has seemingly resulted in it having apparent fluency in Omegaverse terminology and the ability to churn out loads of steamy RPF about BTS members which is of dubious use to anybody but makes it clear that a fairly significant amount of the original material and the webs of meaning and association found within is being spat out with only a minimal amount of digestion.
Now there's a philosophical question of how transformative a work is, if a collage of magazine photos and cut outs can be considered art, but I think it is clear at this point that Sudowrites isn't the person assembling the collage, it's the scissors and glue.
It is a tool for assembling other people's work into a new configuration, but with a complete lack of clarity about what is new, what is recombined, and what was reproduced in its entirety. This is a tool essentially launders writing and makes accreditation more difficult, and does so for profit. In the realm of fanfiction perhaps this is just annoying, but by making phrases and ideas harder to track down and attribute we are stripping away potentially important context and the common courtesy of crediting sources and originators. Philosophically I think it is defensible to say that labors should be recognized and that attribution and credit can be stolen, even if the good produced is non-material. Likewise, I think you've not considered the potential of this tool to be used towards the opposite end, to create false passages in the style of individuals, using their own work, with an eye towards attributing things damaging to their reputation. I doubt the tech will be there any time soon and metadata is honestly more important for verifying text than style in anything with legal implications, but making forgeries easier is a negative externality that must be considered. Also, while I believe you're not being blase and are just keeping this strictly philosophical, the implications of even partial plagiarism are not merely theoretical to me. I've had plenty of articles "scraped" from the news site I work for, nearly word for word and attributed to either people I've never met or a "staff writer" who almost certainly doesn't exist. By blindly following SEO best practices in appended text and sprinkling random links into my text they're able to capture significantly more traffic than my original work. If I liked my job more and upper management more tech savvy this would be really concerning, as page views are a key performance indicator. The appeal of such low effort work has also dragged the industry down as a whole with plenty of sites tasking actual humans with merely reporting other's reporting, often doing so far enough into a chain that attribution is lost or confused, obscuring the actual labor everybody else ctrl+c'd. That is the end that these tools will likely be turned towards, which ought to be concerning as the result will be further dilution of the information we have available to us.
I've maybe circled back around to my original point more than this specific counter-objection you raised but whatever, let Elon train his bot on this too.
