Side Effects of ghost powers
Hey all! I’m writing a DP fic called Side Effects exploring the physical and later mental/emotional impact of Danny initially getting his ghost powers. As an ICU stepdown nurse for 3 years, I wanted to view Danny’s accident through a slightly more realistic, medical lens.
Note: I had to fudge a good amount because Danny really should have fucking died and there’s no getting around that.
I do recommend you read the fic first before reading this as there’s some spoilers. Or if you don’t care you can read on. So! The two factors we are looking at regarding the accident are: ecto-contamination secondary to electrocution.
Electrocution
I was forced to downplay a lot of the severe symptoms of electrocution because, again, a bad enough shock will kill someone. My hand-wavey explanation is simply that the portal didn’t activate at a deadly voltage so he got a good shock but not enough to be fatal. I guess.
Muscle weakness/spasms: intermittent muscle spasms are common from shocks, muscles being activated by electricity and reacting to the lingering impulses. Danny’s is transient but quite annoying for a time. But his muscles are gonna be weak and achy af for days if not weeks after from the massive contractions caused by the shock and the after effects. Sensory issues: lots of things can cause nerve damage, including electrocution so Danny is experiencing some pretty severe neuropathy primarily manifesting with numbness and tingling throughout his body. His entire skin and peripheral nervous system got fried so while its mostly numb it’s also super sensitive for a bit of time causing massive pain and discomfort from your body tingling like a thousand bee stings. It’s worst in the hours after the accident but is something that never quite really goes back to normal both from the electrocution and his ghost half taking over and generally dulling his sense of touch.
Hearing/Vision loss: Like skin/nerves, your sensory organs in your eyes and ears would be affected by such a severe and allover electric shock. Danny has some blurred and occasionally double vision from his eyes not properly receiving/understanding input. Hearing loss is common following electricity given how delicate the inner ear is but I just give Danny some nasty tinnitus (ear ringing) for a bit. This inner ear problem also massively throws off his balance when he’s trying to move post accident. These factors are exacerbated by the ecto-contamination and mostly fade in the days following the accident before going away as his superhuman healing kicks in.
Heart Arrhythmia: an irregular heartbeat caused by the electrical impulses that control basal heartrate not coordinating they they should for a variety of reasons, in this case, massive electric shock. Danny would be somewhat aware of it, its not exactly painful exactly but you can just feel that your heart isn’t beating right. Secondary side effects are dizziness, chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath. This resolves almost entirely when Danny stabilizes
Cognitive issues: Danny got his brains a little scrambled in addition to his molecules being rearranged. The first third of the story Danny is very clearly NOT thinking straight and Tucker/Sam should not have left him alone. Shocks can cause things like irrational emotional behaviors from hormone release along with memory loss and depression. He constantly waxes and wanes in mood and opinions on what to do in the story and never comes to a true decision that, damn lucky for him, worked out on its own.
Ecto-Contamination
Alright so Danny got massively shocked, sucks right but people live through that all the time. Ecto-contamination is more tricky (not only cause its made up and I had to think about what symptoms it would theoretically produce) but because the effects are more life threatening. It’s also irreversible, once he was contaminated it was only something that could be survived not cured.
So I theorized that Danny got shocked by the accident and was slowly dying of ecto-contamination and was pretty much clinically dead for a brief moment there, the death was enough for the large quantity of ectoplasm in him to immediately coalesce into a ghost (Phantom). So Danny was mostly dead but not quite, I’ve coded and brought back enough people to know it can be reversed somewhat. Danny becomes Phantom but the sudden stable formation of the ectoplasm into what its supposed to be, a ghost, caused his body to stop fighting the ectoplasm as a foreign invader and become part of the self. His core finished forming in his chest and his body started back up again, his ghost safely nestled in his once again living body as he slowly comes to grips with his actual death experience.
Nausea/Vomiting: I likened the idea of ecto-contamination to radiation poisoning, something that is essentially the antithesis to life. One of the first symptoms of radiation is n/v which is also why it’s one of the first overt symptoms Danny has. He was heavily electrocuted/irradiated and his body wants to expunge it all. As for the ectoplasm/blood he vomits, that’s the next section.
Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleed: So I was a little mean here. When one vomits up blood (or in this case ectoplasm/blood mix) it has to come from somewhere and a lot of the times it’s a GI Bleed. These are nasty, they need to be either cauterized or surgically repaired not to mention replenishing the blood lost. Fanon says that ectoplasm is at least mildly corrosive to humans so it is here, as it’s bonding to him, it’s literally eating him very slowly from the inside out which is causing a great deal of his internal pain. It’s not enough to be immediately life threatening but would kill him eventually. He developed some nasty bleeding ulcers in his stomach which let in blood and ectoplasm which were expunged. Danny’s core formed overnight and began healing the damage it had previously been causing but Dan is still gonna be vomiting excess blood/ectoplasm not to mention having black, tarry stools for at least a few days afterwards.
Hypothermia/Tremors: Hypothermia is when the body hits 95F/35C which Danny is just above at the start of the chapter. Danny initially starts shaking really bad (rigors) but as his body temperature cools further his shaking slows and eventually stops, a sure sign that the body is rapidly losing the fight to hypothermia and will likely die soon without immediate intervention. This is caused not only by the ectoplasm but his ice core shakily starting to form inside of him. Once he fully turns half ghost his hypothermia doesn’t change but it just no longer negatively affects him (I say Danny hovers naturally around 96-95F/35-33C getting much colder as Phantom at baseline. His body still can be damaged by going too cold but that’s a whole other post.)
Incoherency/Hallucinations: I mentioned in the electrocution section that Danny is more than a little addled and the contamination didn’t help in that regard. Not only is he not thinking clearly but he’s also getting a little delirious and seeing things. Common hallucinations I see are: someone in the room watching you, things crawling on the walls, creeping shadows, you’re in the wrong place. I think its a solid 50/50 as far as Danny straight up hallucinating but also becoming more aware of natural ectoplasm that hangs around in the atmosphere. (And before anyone asks, yes Clockwork did come and visit, Danny just doesn’t remember)
Pain: Being electrocuted, irradiated, being dissolved slowly on the inside is enough to cause massive amounts of pain. Danny is 14, he doesn’t understand true pain and probably underestimated how much it would hurt. Once it got bad, it was almost paralyzing so it got to the point where even when he wanted to call for help, he couldn’t move or think past the horrible pain of his every molecule slowly dying and rearranging itself.
Weakness/Fatigue: I don’t really have anything much to add for this section that hasn’t been said in the others. Just the combination of all of the above meant Danny is so incredibly weak and fatigued, this will be problematic in the days and weeks following the accident as his body heals from the stress put on it. Poor boy was probably just getting past the worst of his symptoms by the time of the Lunch lady attack one month in.
Ghost instinct: Going off the medical rant for a minute to go into another aspect of the contamination present in the story, the idea of ectoplasm adding inherent ghostiness to Danny. Its common fanon that all ghosts (through ectoplasm) have their own unique code and language that is just omnipresent and instinctive. Such a massive, body altering dose of ectoplasm saw those things start to leech into Danny even before he became half ghost. The biggest is his fear of being seen, majority of ghosts are completely invisible and don’t want to be seen by the living. As Danny’s suffering and literally dying, he can’t bring himself to confess to his loved ones for very understandable reasons but also this ghostly instinct in the back of his head telling him to hide and get away. Other instincts are a strong attraction to the portal/Ghost Zone, lowkey being able to sense living people around him and a bit of an emotional dampener when Phantom.

Taking a Rest
Apparently I am writing fic again? so hooray!
So this is a total vent fic, because I managed to hurt my back doing a lot of physical work this past week. My BFF and roommate (@randomslasher) has a bad back, so I'm usually the one who does all the physical heavy lifting, but I overdid it and am laid out right now. They're being amazing taking care of me, but I am SUPER FRUSTRATED about it--so I took it out on Noct!

It didn’t fully hit him until the next day.
It wasn’t that Noct wasn’t used to being physically active back home. He was. He trained with the Crownsguard, he’d walked all over his high school campus, he’d worked a few jobs that had him on his feet. It wasn’t that he wasn’t used to sitting for long hours, either, in meetings and class, and marathon video game sessions.
But he had to admit he wasn’t used to riding for hours in a car only to jump out, hike halfway up a mountain, spend a frantic half hour or so fighting for his life, then dropping back in the car for a few more hours on the way to do it all over again.
Maybe it was that. Maybe it was the third rainy day in a row. Maybe it’d been harvesting and hauling crops, which he absolutely wasn’t used to. Maybe it’d been the hit he’d taken from the dualhorn the day before--not enough to waste a potion on, definitely enough to feel.
Whatever it was, when Noct hauled his legs over the edge of the hotel bed at the Taelpar rest stop and tried to push himself up to get ready for another day, the ever present low thrum of pain in the small of his back exploded into a rippling fire down both legs and up his spine, dumping him back on the mattress with a gasp.
“Shit,” he hissed through clenched teeth, squeezing his eyes shut and willing the muscle spasm to pass. Shit, shit, shit! They didn’t have time for this!
There was a crash from the bathroom. “Noct? Dude, are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Noct forced out, wincing at the concern in Prompto’s voice. Dammit. Prompto’d never seen him like this...but no. No. He’d be fine, he just needed a minute.
“Yeah, not sure I believe you there, buddy,” Prompto replied. Noct glanced up to see him frowning down, one hand reaching out. “You need a ha--?”
“Don’t touch me!” Noct flushed, immediate guilt flooding him at the flash of hurt that crossed Prompto’s face. “Sorry, just...don’t try to help me up, right now. It’ll only…” he sighed, running a hand back through his hair, glancing around the hotel room. The other bed was already made, a couple duffle bags open on top of it. There was no sign of Gladio or Ignis. “Where’s Specs?”
“Uh...he and Gladio went to turn in hunts and grab us some breakfast,” Prompto returned, dropping into a chair and sitting on his hands, as if he might touch Noct by accident and set him off again. “Do you need a potion or something? We’ve got a few, or I can text them to bring something else back, if you’re...are you hurt?”
“Not exactly,” Noct replied, biting his bottom lip. “Are..are we supposed to meet them there?”
“Yeah, but...shit, seriously, Noct, what’s going on?” Prompto’s voice cracked as Noct again tried to push himself to his feet, and again couldn’t bite back a soft cry.
Noct closed his eyes and slumped--carefully--in defeat. Fuck. “I...I think my back’s out,” he admitted. “Can you...just get Ignis. Please?”
Prompto, to his credit, didn’t ask any more questions, just agreed and hurried from the room when Noct reassured him he didn’t need him to stay. Noct gingerly laid himself back down, biting back a whimper with each sudden, burning twinge that shot through him as he did so.
Dammit, this couldn’t happen right now. The headaches before Titan had been bad enough, but at least he’d mostly been able to push through them and keep going. But his back hadn’t done this in years and that last time he’d been safe in Insomnia, able to get Ignis to cancel all his duties and classes for a few days until the muscle spasms and pain passed.
And he’d been able to be alone, with only Ignis coming in to look after him. Sure, he hadn’t hidden the episodes from Prompto, exactly, he’d told him why he’d been out, but he hadn’t let him come over during them, either. And Gladio...fuck. He definitely wasn’t looking forward to his first sparring partner seeing him like this.
Besides, his own desire to hide his frailities aside, he didn’t fucking have time for this. He needed to finish collecting everything Cid needed to fix the boat and get to Altissia, where Luna was waiting. He needed to be following up on Cor’s leads for the Royal Arms. He needed to help the people of Lucis in whatever small way he could, picking up hunts and running errands and doing something to make up for the neglect of the last thirty years and the pain of the Imperial occupation now.
He didn’t need to be laid out in bed with an aching back when there were people depending on him. How was he supposed to fulfill any kind of damn destiny when he could barely manage to stand up?
Get it together, he ordered himself, squeezing his hands into tight fists, his bitten off nails digging into his palms. You’re a king now, you have to act like one. Dad wouldn’t break down like this, try and live up to him for once...
He heard the door open, some painful eternity later, during which he’d managed to get his breathing somewhat steadied and push away the panic hovering behind his frustration.
But he still felt something deep inside him uncoil in relief when he heard Ignis’s voice. “Ah. I see, Prompto. Why don’t you go back to the Crow’s Nest and have breakfast? I can take it from here.”
Prompto might’ve protested, but he still went. Noct heard the door shut again, followed by Ignis’s steady footsteps across the room. The bed dipped down beside him, and a cool, gloved hand alighted on his forehead. “Your back?”
Noct swallowed, hard. “Yeah. Ignis, I’m so sor--”
“You had better not be about to apologize,” Ignis cut him off, running his hand back through Noct’s hair. Noct blinked, then blinked again and opened his eyes, meeting Ignis’s. But here was no anger in them, only concern. He raised an elegant eyebrow, then smiled slightly when Noct closed his mouth. “Good. You’ve nothing to apologize for. I’m honestly rather surprised we haven’t run into this already, considering everything you’ve put yourself through in the past few months.”
“I was hoping I’d downed enough curatives to be finally over it,” Noct muttered, letting himself relax more as Ignis stood again, pulling off his gloves and setting them aside. “I’ve had more of them than actual soda lately.”
“If only that were how it worked,” Ignis agreed quietly. But curatives, though they could work miracles when applied immediately after an injury, lost their effectiveness the further out they were used. And Noct’s back had been beyond them when he’d been a child, there was no way he’d get any additional relief from them now. “Fortunately we’re not on any specific timeframe, so you can--and will--take all you need to recover. Have you taken any pain relief yet?”
Noct shook his head. “No. I was...was hoping it’d go away.”
“Unlikely, if, as Prompto tells me, you weren’t able to stand unassisted. Well then, we’ll take care of that, first.” Ignis slid out his phone, tapping at it for a few moments, before putting it away again. “I’ve told Gladio to let the hotel proprietor know we’ll be staying at least one more night, possibly several. I’ve also told him to keep himself and Prompto amused for the day. There were several hunts on offer that are well within their abilities, if the arcade machines prove too dull.”
“Yeah?” Noct relaxed a little more, and accepted the pills Ignis passed him, as well as the water bottle a moment later to wash them down. “That’d...yeah. Thanks, Spec. That’d be good.”
“You needn’t deal with an audience, at least,” Ignis replied. He rolled up the sleeves of his pinstriped shirt, surveying the bed and Noct himself. “Now, if you think you can manage turning over, I’ve a container of that salve Cor recommended. If you’ll permit me…?”
“Like I’m gonna say no to getting your hands on me,” Noct joked, using the teasing to distract himself from his own awkwardness as he carefully eased himself to his side. “I, uh...I don’t think I’m gonna make it much further…”
“This is quite sufficient,” Ignis assured him, and the bed dipped again as Ignis settled behind him. He gently lifted the hem of Noct’s shirt, and between the two of them they pulled it up to expose his back. Noct heard a small tin open and an astringent, herbal smell wafted into the room. Moments later, cool, slick fingers slid over his skin, gentle above the spasming knots of muscle. “Good?”
“S’fine,” Noct assured him, slowly relaxing under Ignis’s sure, careful, familiar touch. He seemed to know exactly where to ease up, where to bear down, how to rub the salve into his skin with no pain. By the end Noct couldn’t be sure if the warm tingles he felt were entirely caused by the salve itself, or from the man behind him.
When he’d finished, Ignis gently and efficiently put Noct’s shirt back in place. He ransacked the other bed for pillows, helping Noct to expertly brace himself in a position that, thank the Astrals, didn’t hurt. And then he settled himself down on the bed beside Noct, sitting with his back against the headboard, his phone in one hand, close enough that Noct could reach out and hook a finger in his belt loop.
Which Noct did, immediately, tugging gently. “Thanks, Specs.”
“You’re welcome,” Ignis replied, glancing down at him. “Try and get some rest, Noct, it will do you good. I’ll be here if you need anything.”
Noct opened his mouth--to protest, to try and apologize again, to spill out any and all of the recriminations he’d aimed at himself before Ignis had entered the room--but closed it again when Ignis’s hand buried itself in his hair, stroking it gently. Ignis, at least, didn’t seem to agree with the voice of disappointment in Noct’s head.
No. As always, Ignis had his back.
Safe, cared for, and given permission to simply be, Noct fell gradually asleep to the soft sounds of the rain and the sensation of Ignis’s hand in his hair.
He could face the rest of the world later.

Love bites
Ship: Cody/Wolffe

It’s not that Wolffe actively wants to bite people, it just happens.
If he were a different kind of person, one more attuned to the internal goings of the human mind, he would spend hours waxing poetics about how each body’s is a canvas, but the truth is that he just likes to bite. That’s how he got his name, after all.
Of all the people he sleeps with, his favorite to bite has to be Cody. The way he reacts to it is always so good; Wolffe loves how scandalized he acts every time it happens, like for some reason Wolffe had magically stopped liking biting.
It’s always fun making him melt until he gets to the point of actually asking Wolffe to be bitten, to which Wolfe always replies affirmatively, and happily too.
His favorite must be when he has Cody on all fours, presenting his back to him. So much space to mark…
He wasn’t expecting to like it so much once the tables turn…
When he and Cody finally managed to find a window of time in which they could’ve been alone, Wolffe had no idea of what was in store for him, but let’s start from the beginning, shall we?
The good thing about being a Commander, is that you get private quarters. Now more than ever Wolffe appreciates the privacy this grants him; not that he’d have any qualms about shoving Cody against the wall and kiss him breathless in front of the vode, but sometimes you just want to be left alone, you get it?
He can’t help but to smirk when Cody presses against him with his same strength, gripping his shoulders so hard that it hurts. The nice thing about making out with Cody is that he never backs down from a challenge, something that Wolffe deeply appreciates.
He hums appreciatively as he runs his hands over Cody’s sides, brushing his fingers against his toned body. When he goes to grab at his ass, however, he notices that there’s something in the back pocket of his blacks.
“What do we have here?” he mutters, curious, as he goes to grab the object that Cody thought he could keep hidden from him. He’s stopped before he can actually understand what it is when Cody grabs his wrist.
“You’ll see,” he replies, voice sultry and full of promises. Well, color Wolffe intrigued.
He can’t lie: he is really curious about this surprise object, but fine, he’ll play Cody’s game, if anything in order to amuse him.
“This better be worth it,” he warns however, because his patience is limited. Still, he doesn’t think he’ll be disappointed, not with the way Cody’s grinning at him.
“Oh, it will.”
They move to Wolffe’s bed. Cody pushes him towards it, and Wolffe lets him, this time without fighting back.
He can’t hold back an amused smirk when Cody pushes him down until he’s sitting on it, while Cody’s still up. To distract himself he resumes running his hands across his legs, but never enough to be able to touch his back pocket - Cody always manages to stop him before he can do that, the ass.
Still, there’s only one way Wolffe can interpret their position, and he smirks as he goes to work on Cody’s lower blacks, sliding them down to reveal his erection.
“Someone missed me,” he comments, making Cody huff.
“Just get on with it.”
“Yessir.”
If there’s one thing to say about Wolffe, is that whatever he does, he does so with passion. That’s the best way to describe how he acts. He takes Cody cold, without any sort of foreplay, making him gasp and shiver just how he likes it. Direct, that’s the way to go.
Now that there are no more back pockets to worry about, he can freely grab his ass, squeezing it in his hands, playing with it as Wolffe uses it as leverage to push Cody further against him, leaving him with no other choice but to hold onto his shoulder, grip so tight that it’s surely going to leave a sign.
He sucks, making a loud slurping sound, and he feels Cody’s body tense against him. Good. When he manages to slide one hand between his asscheeks and begins to rub his thumb against his entrance, not penetrating him outright but putting enough pressure to make it count, Cody has to forcibly push his mouth away.
“Wait,” he says, looking already so close that Wolffe has to fight the urge to close a fist around his cock and make him come right there right now.
“What?” he asks him, because there has to be a reason as to why Cody has stopped him. He doesn’t want to be rude, you know?
At least he understands that whatever it is, it’s nothing bad, not with the way Cody’s smirking.
“Lemme get something first,” he says, before lowering himself in order to reach his blacks, which have slumped at his ankle’s level.
After peeling them off completely, Cody finally reaches for the mysterious item, waving it in front Wolffe’s face. At first he thinks it’s a collar, but as he looks at it better, that red ball…
“A gag?” he says, face unimpressed. Nobody has ever had the courage of bringing him something like that, but of course Cody is the only one who’s a little shit enough for that.
“What ?” he replies in fact, smirk on his face, “Are you afraid of a small challenge?”
“As if!” Wolffe retorts, snatching the gag from Cody’s hands, lowering his gaze to look at it.
After a moment of silence, Cody speaks again, voice softer this time.
“You don’t have to, of course. I was just thinking it would be fun--”
“I wanna try it,” Wolffe cuts him off. Why not? Maybe it’ll be fun. He surely won’t get to know it if he never tries it.
“Oh, ok…” Cody mutters, surprised, but he recovers quickly, “I’ll make it worth your while, I assure you.”
“You better,” Wolffe says, though there’s no heat in his voice.
Cody chuckles at that, taking the gag back. As he goes to secure it around his head, he says:
“If you want it off, tap me on my arm, ok?”
Wolffe rolls his eyes - c’mon he’s not that weak - but he still nods, appreciative.
It’s weird, having this thing on his mouth. If Wolffe tries to close his lips, he can feel the soft material of the ball give in, but only just a tiny bit, preventing him to be actually successful.
Once Cody’s done, he takes Wolffe’s chin with one hand, admiring his handwork. Usually Wolffe isn’t that found of being stared at like that, but there’s something about Cody’s gaze that makes his heart beat faster already inside his chest.
“Ah, much better,” Cody says, making Wolffe growl. “Shhh, shhh, be good now,” he mutters then, smothering a hand over his hair. He’s already having too much fun with this.
He pushes Wolffe until he’s completely lying on the bed, crawling then on his lap. Wolffe goes immediately grab him, but Cody grabs him by the wrists and forces him down again.
“No touching,” he orders. Oh come on, he can’t be serious.
“Please?” Wolffe tries to say, remembering only too late that he can’t speak. Damned gag. He whines then, trying to move against Cody’s hold, but to no avail.
As if that would be enough to placate him, Cody leans to kiss his nose like he’s just some kind of baby, but he makes up for it when he rubs his thigh between his legs, sending a shiver up his spine. Alright, message received: he’ll try to stay put.
At least Cody isn’t stopping, and he goes to remove his upper blacks, leaving his chest and stomach bare. He smirks before leaning down, kissing his way from his neck to his left pec, lulling Wolffe into a false sense of security. He almost laughs at the way he flinches when he bites at the soft skin, but he doesn’t, and he keeps biting and biting, changing place every time.
Oh so that’s what he wants to do, play at his game! Wolffe could easily push him off if he didn’t want him to do that, but first of all, he said no touching and Wolffe wasn’t going to back out now, and second… he quite likes it, he’s not going to lie. It’s not something that usually happens, mostly because he���s fast to reduce his partners to utter messes before they can even think about doing something like that, but it’s nice.
With his lips pried open like that, it’s harder for him to hold back his voice, all the whimpers and moans that Cody’s ministrations are pushing out of his chest. When he reaches his nipple, sucking it and the closing his teeth around it, Wolffe bucks his hips up, his entire body run by a spasm. He’s met by Cody’s amused gaze, but thankfully he doesn’t stop him as he begins to rub himself against his thigh.
By the time Cody’s raises his head, Wolffe’s covered in bite marks and hickeys. He looks like he’s about to explode at any given moment, but Cody knows he’ll need more than this to come.

9. PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES

A/N: Here’s to a better Monday (hopefully)
Even a snail-speed did not stop a development. If somebody tried to put it into a picture show, it would be a night or a hanging-out nap per slide and each would star Altair a bit closer to the bed than the one before.
As much as Malik was trying to keep his annoyed facade going and on, things were gradually changing for them and if he should be honest at least to himself, he didn't do his best to avoid it. He made the exact opposite actually – which meant letting things happen. Therefore, they had trash-talks and they didn't tiptoe around each other. Neither missed the opportunity for a good ribbing; Altair had nagging down to a science and Malik always repaid his affection in kind with a dash of dry & salty on top. His unparalleled claim on the bed stayed respected.
Among other things, the three of them also had a movie night, full of Malik's condescending remarks aimed either at the screen or at Altair who kept shoving his feet on his lap and his sister lording over them both with popcorn thrown at whichever of them she decided deserved it the most at a randomly selected moment; which ended spectacularly with half-a-comforter and the same amount of a passed-out sister on him, exclusive Backpain edition of a Death in The Making and Altair seated on the floor in between his legs, out cold as well.
They still did not “get their freak on” – and thank you, sis, there is never going to be any after hearing you sing-rap… What the even… What was that? Altair nearly laughed his ass off when he heard that one. Must have been something real dreadful then.
It was only a matter of time until this unmanned train took them to another level, though. Therefore, Malik wasn't surprised when one day he found himself lying in his bed with Altair loosely spooning him. Either a lethargy hit his system hard or his brain stopped overthinking everything for that moment; maybe both. But he didn't pull away and neither did he kick Altair off the bed.
Being tense was just a far-off memory now; one muscled arm thrown over Malik's side in a relaxed manner only accentuated the feeling. Random patterns being drawn on his hip... How exactly did they get there? He honestly couldn't tell – or remember. The only thing his mind was able to recognize, be aware of and distinguish was the proximity, warmth and overall tranquil ease of the moment that he was soaking up. Things he grew unaccustomed to overtime slowly settling over his body, then gradually seeping into him.
As sappy as it sounded even in his own head, Malik didn't want to lose this. Not again. It was worth everything, all the costs that went along with it. Like it had been worth it to the very moment he could not keep up. Like the memory was, still.
Recently, Altair's phone came back to life. For the whole span of his visit here the device must've been on plane mode or something, otherwise there would be no reasonable explanation of the phone suddenly blasting various hits through the flat so much only as of late. Malik could count on the fingers of one hand how many times he saw the man use the device before. That sudden trilling mania somehow popped the isolated-reality bubble which formed around the three of them.
The knowledge of the world outside, its existence, was always there; Malik interacted with it all the time, contrary to popular belief. The amount was limited, but there. Intellectually, he got that covered. Still, as absurd as it sounded, that cursed piece of technology set all alarms in Malik's head off. Soon after he realized why. There was still the rest of the world that could concern Altair and worse – that would demand him back. And as much as Malik was sure of his own worth, accepting that wasn't as easy as it sounded. The world was exactly what took Altair away from him the last time, too, after all.
This was nonsense. He behaved like a teenage girl here. They were good and those were just silly phone calls. And if he strengthened his own hold on the arm embracing him a bit so what. It was comfortable, and he fucking liked it.
It was going to be fine, he firmly decided. Suck it up.
Trying to hide the subtle change behind reasoning, he shot off the first question that came to mind.
“What do you do for work anyway?” Coming to think of that, it wasn't a stupid one. What was stupid was the fact that even after three weeks, Malik actually didn't know the answer.
“I'm a BASE jumper.” Fingers kept on drawing yet another pattern into Malik's skin, obviously disinterested in the topic and overall not finding it worth stopping what they were doing. Which perfectly complemented Altair's unphased words. Malik? Not so much. His muscles spasmed and his whole body froze.
Well, Altair never did anything by halves, did he…
His anger simmered forth and an elevated pulse didn't stay far behind. Having to call upon the trademark scowl to get back where it belonged only made Malik register that it was missing in the first place and what an utter wanker!
There was never a better opportunity to drop that pin.
Dear idiot, have you ever heard of the silence before–
Apparently, Altair never did, because he didn't make a mad dash for exit the very second.
A book hit Altair's head.
Fast.
Hard.
“You told me you're staying, you fucker!” Malik surged up, glaring at the liar. Does he honestly think Malik's an idiot who doesn't know what BASE jumpers do to get their rocks off?!
“I am, though!” Altair followed his example and as much as his voice was vehement, his face was painted with a dumbass look. Unsurprisingly, it didn't keep strictly to his face; Malik could almost see the idiocy seeping into the brain matter, too. As if Altair needed any more.
“No, you're not! You travel the whole blasted world!”
Trying to kill yourself in the process!
“Malik, what the hell?!” Self-preservation instincts must've finally kick in, because Altair made a quick escape out of the bed. The temptation of maiming him lessened a bit. For now.
That uncomprehending, confused expression didn't disappear, though.
As if he had any right-
“I've said what my job is right on the first day here. What's so wrong about it all of a sudden?”
Way to make Malik go beet red. Because, unbeknownst to him, the brunette pointed out that it was Malik's own fault. This is what you get for spacing out at a wrong moment. Altair must've mentioned his occupation when Malik was still too busy trying to ride the sudden tsunami wave of…everything when he saw Altair for the first time in twelve years. Not only was he acting like an absolute moron just seconds ago, but he was also frustrated and desperate now – thanks to his own lapse. That was just so–!
He hurled yet another book Altair's way, wishing he could fling it at himself instead.

After Altair left to seek safety outside the room, Malik started to gradually cool down. It didn't happen of its own accord; the anger would most probably insist on staying until it burned him up physically just as it had mentally, but Malik wasn't fond of letting anything or anyone control him. He might've had a temporary, weak moment, but it was time to reign the fire back in. Only to find out he had nothing to do.
No, let him rectify that statement. He had loads to do and the only thing that separated him from it was the power button on his laptop. Currently, however, he would only add more errors than corrections. Disgusted at himself for such loss of control, the more motivation it was to recall his unfocused mind back in order. If he ever wanted to regain his mental equilibrium back, though, he had to divest himself of the pressing distraction. And the first step to achieve that was to address the matter. So, folding his arms on his chest, he did.
As much as both him and Altair were stubborn, as much as the room refugee was venturous in his very core, Malik was proud. Not that he didn't have grounds to be. However sometimes, the trait made it hard to admit a mistake of his own doing. He was very careful to avoid situations that would push him into the very act, but nobody's perfect and the recent argument had only proven that statement once again. Malik was adept at owning his mistakes nowadays; he still did not enjoy doing that but was capable of the action. That alone wasn't all there was to the problem, was it.
The real issue was Altair's... job. Hobby. Both, because Altair would not spend an hour of his time on something that wouldn't be worth it to him. Arguing aside; the thing was serious. Dangerous business. Heaps of adrenaline. Exactly what Altair always craved. Malik was no stranger to dealing with this situation. An exact same one. He could swear it wasn't so hard to do when he was seventeen, though. And back then? Altair was far from holding back, too. Those who'd dare to think that him being younger forced some limits on him would be sorely mistaken. He used to dab into all sorts of things anyway which was no wonder, considering his crew of madness.
Ezio was overly fond of walls to the point that indoor wall climbing didn't even register on his radar anymore and instead, he went for urban parkour and freerunning. While Altair and the Italian weren't necessarily joined at the hip – small miracle and mercy spared on Malik – they sure shared similar, if not identical mindsets overall. Kenway would be another rebellious breed; mostly into activities involving water. These two, he and Ezio, were really tight, therefore where Ezio was, Kenway turned out to be nearby as well and vice versa. Therefore, although their diverging hobbies, the guys stole moves and tricks from each other and developed their styles even further down the road. Bec seemed like the least insane of the bunch, but even she had her own brand of crazy. In her case, the calling was technology, which sounded innocent enough. Until Malik witnessed her “fucking around” on a skateboard and glanced off a part of her snowboard-rave holiday trip, documented with the help of her baby drone.
That would be the main influential group of people that surrounded Altair for what seemed like ever since forever. And the teen wholeheartedly inhaled all he could from each one of them and then some, because his own specialization? Heights and jumps. Seriously, if you saw a spot so high your head spun, and Altair wasn't there already? All you had to do was mention the location.
Malik had been fine with who Altair was when they hit it off. He knew the guy equaled a walking, unbridled composition of insanity. They couldn't've been more different and that was fine as well. Thorough the time they've been an item, there were countless occasions where Altair turned up with some sort of injury – bones broken, black eyes, bruised ribs, cuts, you name it. Far from ideal to an outsider and yes, Malik wasn't delighted with all the bloody clothes either. Hell, the medicine cabinet must have gotten more action than he did in total. But when push came to shove, Malik would always accept it.
Accept it.
Malik reverted back into his present self. The one that was now clenching its fists and teeth. Unclenching his hands, releasing them out of the spastic prison, he forced the real issue – the truth out.
He was afraid.
Fear got to him this time around and it was the bone chilling kind, too. It was so easy to believe that Altair couldn't die, that nothing serious could happen to him when he was younger. The teen had pulled through so many failed attempts at whatever; he seemed immortal and excluded that level of confidence as well. Why would Malik worry back then?
Altair still got that vibe going on. The only difference here was, that Malik went with what his brain said much more these days. He was older. He was supposed to be sober-minded; smart. A fat lot of good it did to him here.
He didn't like it, alright?! He. Fuckin'. Didn't. BASE jumping was hazardous – at best. It was something Altair obviously had to do, loved to do, though. So, in the end, it didn't really matter what Malik thought. This wasn't about whether Altair would stop, quit the job for him or not. It was about Malik deciding to either go and tell Altair to fuck off or apologize and hope for the best.
He took in his whole room. The rackety chair still stood on all four, his books were sorted precisely the way he left them, there was no secondary background sound, only the wind sweeping through the trees outside.
Neither here nor there, that's where Malik stood at the moment and for the next couple of minutes. Then, done with the limbo, he bit the bullet, leaving the door open as he marched forth.

Of course this would be when it all went to shit.
Altair had no idea what exactly provoked Malik to such extent, but that didn't mean the result would disappear. He was still in the kitchen and Malik was still in his room.
Until he wasn't.
Hearing a noise behind him he spun around only to end up with a chest full of Malik's forehead. This was certainly unusual. No matter, he was far from refusing the gesture and what it meant. Wrapping his arms around the man, he was just glad that whatever that previous outburst was for, it was gone and done with; over.
Not that he wasn't interested in finding out what caused it; Malik wasn't one to lash out for something trivial. Altair sensed it was better to let it be, though. If and when Malik would want, he'd tell him. Of that, his sorry exiled ass was sure. The man was the least person to keep his mouth shut if he didn't like something, Altair thought with certain amount of affection.
“Wanna go grab a coffee?” They were bound to separate any minute now, so he might as well rid them of any possible awkwardness.
“Got to get my phone,” was a mumbled reply before Malik began pulling away. Altair didn't stop him.
“I'll wait by the door.”

SUMMARY: 01. ) after joel’s traumatic events with his daughter, he turns to drugs and alcohol as a sort of “numbing.” 02. ) this ( mostly ) takes place during his time as a hunter, before he meets tess. 03. ) while tess doesn't necessarily make a conscious effort to get joel better ( she didn't even know about it until later in their relationship ), she does end up effecting him in positive light.
anyways, i’ll try my best to keep it simple: joel, at least my joel, use to be addicted to medications he would find, or even steal, as a hunter. these medications would vary on each raid / hunt, but he would actively search for very light pain killers to antidepressants to even more extreme drugs like ketamine, kentanyl, etc.
kentanyl, anti-psychotic, and insomnia medications are the ones he would tend to use the most, and would sometimes nearly overdose on the insomnia medications he would take. however, medications were not the only thing he was addicted to, he was also alcoholic. due to these two different ( and extreme ) addictions, they would both cause extreme interferences with each other. some of this include, but certainly isn’t limited to: 01. ) constant blackouts, fainting, irregular sleeping and irregular sleeping cycles. 02. ) delusions, hallucinations, confusion, anxiety, and psychotic episodes. 03. ) weakness, extreme sweating, slow or uneven heartbeats. 04. ) twitching, muscle spasms, and random jerks in movement. 05. ) complete or partly body numbness.
sometimes, he would actively seek out trying to make himself sleep or blackout, to avoid the process of falling sleep, or to stop himself from waking up for several hours at a time.
why, though ? what was the trigger ? after the death of his daughter, joel would have quite extreme nightmares, flashbacks, and hallucinations of his daughter repeatedly dying. swallowed with guilt, joel turned to these addictions as a sort of “comfort,” and at times even constantly reassuring himself that it was what he deserved-- that he deserved to suffer for the death of his daughter, and that he and he alone was the only one responsible for her death.
after joining the hunters, and after years of constantly butting heads with tommy, he discovered these drugs and began taking them, originally to help him sleep at night and to keep his hallucinations under control, eventually becoming addicted to the feeling and “numbness” of these medications.
after him eventually developing a relationship with tess, and becoming a smuggler with her, he was able to control some of his addictions. ( something i’ll get into another time, but to summarize it: he found a new reason to live, another reason to keep fighting for his life-- not for himself, but for tess. )
he’s still a heavy drinker, and will get bad urges to drink again if something triggers his PTSD or if something angers or upsets him.

It wasn’t surprising that the corridors of the Enterprise were empty at zero twenty, but Will didn’t realize exactly how tired he was until he passed Deanna’s door and nearly gained his and realized he was supposed to be three more decks away. To where she was staying with the Potts boys several decks below. Running his hand over his beard in frustration, he went ahead and entered his own quarters. He might as well take a quick sonic shower, change into his bedclothes, and grab a fresh uniform for in the morning.
Thus far, he was nearly a week into life as a parent-by-proxy, and things were settling a little. The boys were getting better at doing their homework and having it mostly completed by the time that either he or Deanna met them in the evenings. Deanna had found a few activities to better cover the gap between the end of the school day and shift changes.
They’d discovered that the boys liked playing various games and enjoyed swimming, which they had previously only done on shore leave. So at least twice now, including in the earlier evening, they all went for a long swim after dinner. It wore out the boys, and it was a good stress release. And besides, he knew Deanna enjoyed the water, even if she still thought it was weird that humans insisted on swimsuits. He would never stop teasing her about that.
He tried not to think about how nice his bed would feel right about now. The Potts quarters did have the main bedroom, but it still felt too strange to sleep in a couple’s bed that wasn’t his. The couch wasn’t nearly long enough. More than once he found Deanna asleep on it before he was ready for bed. And he envied how she always seemed to curl so neatly on it. It was about time to check with Data or Geordi about other options because he’d spent half the day with an aching back from trying to fit himself onto the sofa.
Perception, Will reflected, really was a strange thing. It felt like it took twice as long to walk to the turbolift, go three more decks down, and walk two corridors than it had taken for him to leave the bridge and get to his own quarters. The distance was only a little further, but the family corridors were silent this late.
This particular call out so late at night was a two-part issue. The first was a yellow alert from a dicey situation with the region of space and a borderline-hostile and certainly not friendly ships patrolling the region. He had managed to smooth things over without an actual incident and without needing to rouse the captain, who had been working far too much in the last weeks and needed sleep worse than Will. He’d asked Data to call him first tonight. And although it was the most pressing to the overall wellbeing of the ship, it had turned out to be the easier of the two issues needing his attention.
Once the alert was over, a call had come up from sickbay requesting senior staff. Will had turned over command to Data and dutifully made his way down. When he had walked into the ICU area, Will found the doctor on duty with four surly looking patients.
Ensign Sa’Naar was glaring at the floor, his left eye swollen shut. Starling and Ulani were two other ensigns, both fresh out of the academy and on their first assignments. Just new enough and resembling one another enough that Will still struggled to distinguish them from the other. One was being tended to by a nurse who was mending something in his hand. The other screened for internal injuries. And the ever-eager-to-prove-herself Von Treaes was sitting in the farthest bio bed protesting that she was fine in an uncanny mimic of the way Deanna usually handled her stays in sickbay. With no more success than the counselor, either. As she was clearly unable to get up from the table without assistance.
No one had wanted to talk for long minutes. In the end, it took the report of the security officer on watch tonight and a few previous odd reports to piece it together. And Starling had broken first, pulled into a private room. Twelve questions in, and the whole story behind the overly competitive ensigns had unraveled.
All four were confined to separate private cubicles in sickbay while they rested. Tomorrow he’d have to investigate everything. He had no issue with blowing off steam. Or friendly competition. There were plenty of tournaments during the course of any given year for all sorts of games and sports. But a fight ring on Deck 28 in some empty storage bays made Will’s blood boil. There was nothing sporting or okay about knocking each other senseless.
For now, though, his initial anger had burned off. It was far past time to be sleeping. He could only imagine what Deanna and the captain were going to have to say about this. That was a problem for tomorrow. Or at least six hours from now.
He’d fully prepared to have to move Deanna before he fell asleep on the couch in the Potts quarters. In fact, he was really looking forward to her familiar weight and warmth resting against him. He swore he slept better with her beside him. In all honesty, he was tired of the couch, though. It was too short and forced him to scrunch into awkward positions. Sending him twice to sickbay for a head ache caused by pinched nerves in his neck one day and muscle spasms in his back on another. Easily remedied by Beverly… but even she had questioned why he was putting himself through it. The simplest answer was that he had been too busy during the day to deal with a better bed solution.
The lounge was silent. Lights still on as they had been when he was called away a few hours ago. He trudged on toward the low light still on in the boys’ room, and he was fully prepared to lay down the law about how they had to go to sleep. Deanna would be wiped out in the morning, and she was never a morning person as it was.
But he found everyone deeply asleep. Both boys and Deanna, still in her maroon suit, were on Willie’s bed in a big cuddly pile. His breath left him in a rush. It wasn’t something he had known he’d ever wanted until he saw this. This small slice of domestic normalcy.
For long moments he wondered what it would’ve been like. If he’d said yes six years ago. If he’d met her at Risa. If he’d tried to make it work. If he’d turned down the Potemkin. If he had done anything to pursue what she had so clearly wanted. What he had feared. And now he was feeling foolish and wondering what, exactly, he had feared. If they would’ve had a kid already. Probably not right away. But in six years, they might have had one.
And he might have screwed that up, too. Or messed up a kid along the way. Probably not the same way his father had… but the specter of that lurked.
He was so, so tired. But he couldn’t drag himself away just yet. He was trying to absorb this moment and the way that Willie was sprawled across his bed, his hand curled around Deanna’s arm, reaching for assurance even in sleep. The boy’s pillow was damp with drool. And Jake was curled up, his back to Deanna’s. But still close enough to seek the warmth and comfort she offered.
A family to come home to, even if it’s only temporary. Why the hell did he run from this?
He wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to seek out his own comfort tonight. Rubbing his face and beard, he made his way to the far side. Jake was lean for his age, not that Will was complaining. His arms slid under knees and shoulders, and he lifted quickly and moved the older boy to his own bed a few feet away. In retrospect, he should’ve pulled down the covers first. But Jake wasn’t complaining.
It was going to be a tight fit with both him and Deanna on the twin bed, but he was determined to make it work. One down, one to go. He carefully eased Willie’s hand from Deanna’s arm and tried to shift her without waking her.
A hand caught his arm and a groggy protest. “ ‘was warm,” she mumbled, eyes still closed.
“Sssh, I’m moving him over so I can sleep—”
“Not fair to kick him out of his own bed,” Deanna countered groggily. She pushed herself up, blinking owlishly and clearly attempting to muster the energy to get to her feet and trudge to the other room.
He sighed but nodded, his brain too tired to figure out how this was going to work now. But he slid an arm around her and let her lean on him as he tugged the blanket back over the youngest boy and led her back to the lounge, calling for the lights to dim. Will planned to tuck her into the sofa, but she caught his arm and pulled him down to the cushions.
The last days since they had suddenly taken on parenthood, each night seemed to end with both of them too exhausted to make many decisions. Maybe it was better this way. So he went with it and stretched out, trying to find a cushion to support his head and neck.
In moments, she was curling into the spaces left. Her head tucked under his chin, weight shifted somewhere atop him and supported by the back cushions. Reaching awkwardly and trying not to move her too much, Will snagged the blanket from the previous night and managed to get it more or less over Deanna. “’s that ok?”
Silence was his answer. She had fallen back to sleep as quickly as she had awakened. Almost alarmingly quickly. And it occurred him that this wasn’t keeping any kind of boundaries between them. But his thoughts were hard to hold onto right now. Because she was warm. And here. And it felt like something he imagined marriage to be. But before he could turn over that thought to examine it, the day closed in over him. And he slept.

That said, you can't live out your life hiding from people who your brain might think something sexual about - isolating yourself is unhealthy. Humans are social creatures and social interaction is good for us, talking to people about our problems is good for us, distractions and fun are good for us. I find structured social plans make things easier - so, I like plans like "lets cook together then eat the awesome meal", "lets go see a movie", "lets go to the town center and taste hot chocolate from as many cafés as we can before I puke", "lets go to the fair" and things like that (that said, agoraphobia is awful and ruins like 90% of my social interaction). Keep people in your life who you're comfortable with and who make you happy.
Remember that what you're thinking or mental images that pop into your head aren't evil, it doesn't mean that you have a crush on them, that you actually want to do sexual things with them, that you can't be their friend, or anything like that... they're just thoughts. Meditation, like reading and exercise, helps train your mind into maintaining focus, not reacting to distractions and urges, relaxing, letting thoughts pass by, and being less hectic and loud - it also has health benefits, can help you sleep, can help you take time from your busy schedule to yourself (an urge that may have been previously feeding the addictions instead, as they can be linked to a need for control), and can help you work through thoughts or anxieties.
Mindfulness helps in various ways too - for example, smokers found that being mindful (observing, essentially) helped them quit because it led to them paying more attention to how bad the cigarette tasted, and it also allowed them to non-judgmentally observe the cravings that they felt, observe why they were feeling those cravings, and allow them to pass by. It's about letting your thoughts exist, letting things exist, acknowledging them, but not letting them control you.
You can study mindfulness for yourself - research it online, read one of the many books about it, watch YouTube videos, etc - or you can go to the doctor and ask for a therapy that teaches mindfulness (I found learning about it in my own time more helpful, and have had more success with that, but I think that was mostly related to not having a great therapist - plus, online gives me more opportunities to look into the how and why, to see how other people do it, to look deeper into it, to take as long as I need, while therapy was just an elderly lady snapping at me for using my phone and telling me to imagine that my thoughts are clouds and distracting me constantly).

Step 8: If you can't control the addiction or behaviour, if the thoughts are becoming difficult to live with, if these problems continue to cause you distress, there is no shame in seeking professional help. You don't have to do this alone.
Remember that chemical imbalances and other neurological issues can cause such things - if you can't manage it alone, that could be a warning sign that something serious or physiological is going on. Not being able to quit doesn't necessarily mean that somebody's "not trying hard enough", and instead of beating yourself up talk to somebody who can do blood tests, scans, or whatever else is necessary to make sure that you're okay and that you overcome your struggles.
