Could you talk about the relationship between keefe and Grady and how it could evolve?
Absolutely I could, thank you for your patience! Notably, we've recently seen a huge step between the two of them with Grady beginning to train Keefe in his new ability, something that almost feels unreal given how much people spoke about this prior to it actually happening.
Right now, I think Keefe reminds Grady of himself. They're on similar journeys, but one Grady is much further along, and that's set the scene for a large percentage of their interactions. Maybe Keefe is a troublemaker, maybe he's not good, but he's hurting. And he's hurting in ways that are familiar to him, ways that are an echo of his own pain from centuries past. So Grady is setting aside some of his reservations for the chance to do him so good, to connect with him in a way that no one else is capable of.
From Keefe's perspective, I think this is more about being accepted as part of Sophie's life than about the training. Instead of being pushed away from her family, now there's a bridge. For once, something he's doing (his fondness and presence in her life) isn't a rebellion; he's not breaking the "rules" to do it, it's accepted (if with a bit of grumbling). A bond with Grady is like permission to be in her life, you could argue.
However, this is all new and tenuous, so there's room to grow and evolve. Interaction beyond training, for Grady to learn who Keefe is without the bias of seeing him as a troublemaker. For Keefe to see him as someone to learn from and respect instead of as another authority figure to skirt around and rebel against. I think there's opportunity for the two to really learn from each other, and to potentially even form a more familial bond. They're very likely going to have the time to do so if Keefe starts hanging around Havenfield even more to see Sophie. He'll become part of the family and Grady will learn to appreciate him, even if he's exasperated at times--at least that's where they seem to be heading
I'm curious to see what becomes of the two of them, so thank you for asking :)
#kotlc#kotlc character analysis#keefe sencen#grady ruewen#quil's queries#nash nonsie#and also thank you for your patience! I've been bad about answering asks lately so I promise it's not you#oh hot damn I think answering this and thinking about sophie and keefe triggered a shift in my romance perception#it happens every few months. i'll start getting really withdrawn from romance and relationships and connection and love#and then WHAM it will return all at once. sometimes I gotta sit down to process it#i'm still atypical about romance and love when it returns. still not normative and still very queer about it. but like. woof!#and it might've. just returned. who knows#i'll have to wait and see to see if it's really back or not#but anyway that's wildly off topic!#point is grady and keefe have so much potential and I want to see which parts get utilized#because they've already come so far. where else will they go?#long post

brother crab's fall 2024 first impressions: maou 2099
i think i forgot to make a post after the first ep because my first impressions of it were just. not that deep. i do remember going in with zero expectations and thinking hey this is actually better and more interesting than what i'd imagined! but it still wasn't That interesting
HOWEVER
SECOND EPISODE ELEVATED EVERYTHING
first of all peak bishounen demon lord design here. nothing revolutionary but a solid classic. 10/10 no notes
and like okay so the premise of a ye olden fantasy times demon lord being defeated then resurrected into a far future sci-fi world sounded really fun with the potential to be super funny. it made me think of paripi koumei which was basically incredible
the first ep was a little higher on the drama than the humor imo, but the second ep? second ep, the humor really hit
i'm absolutely loving the demon lord's extremely loyal, faithful follower who worked for centuries to resurrect him and is also his number one simp. like this poor girl almost got outed as a demon king otome doujinshi otaku. right in front of her demon king
demon lord's job hunt and the outcome of it is also just. i won't even spoil it because. hilarious. truly
the worldbuilding is also reasonably interesting, i think that was one of the things that impressed me most in the first episode
overall, really pleasantly surprised by this one and looking forward to more!
#crab watches#fall 2024#first impressions#maou 2099#THE FACT. THAT LIKE YATO NORAGAMI HE NEEDS BELIEVERS TO BE POWERFUL#(a trope i enjoy immensely for gods btw)#SO THEY MAKE HIM BECOME A [REDACTED]#SINCERELY TOO FUNNY. TO ME#series composition guy also did majo to yajuu series composition recently#which inspires confidence! enjoyed that a lot#he also did biscuit hammer series composition which... um...............#the less said the better. on that#HE ALSO IS THE HYPMIC GUY#LIKE. THE STORY. GUY#OF THE MANGA. AND MAIN CANON. SO THAT'S. UM. SOMETHING. TO ME#it was while i was looking at his credits that i noticed#he's credited with involvement on rhyme anima s1 but literally not at all on s2#like gee the original scenario writer of hypmic main canon wasn't involved in rhyme anima s2?#I'M SHOCKED <- sarcastic guy#really cool that i kept saying it feels like s2 was not written by people who have read hypmic much less written it before#and was right đ#anyway this is wildly off topic now lmao maou 2099 is great so far

I FUCKING DID SOMETHING FOR ONCE LET'S GO!!!
ok so i was listening to this song like a week ago and i saw this animation clear as day in my mind and i knew i had to try and storyboard it out while i was thinking of it. i wanna do the full song at some point because it is So Very Them-coded but i do not have the time rn and will not for a while (i barely had the time to make this) so for now i just made sure i got the really complicated part out of the way. figured i'd post it because. why not lol
anyway. this is for my Darkest Desire AU story!! it's called Glitching Fates!! i am so normal about it and i have been for years now. it is. so far removed from the source material but i do not care it is very special to me :]
as a sort of summary for what's going on here, the night guard and Will used to be really good friends but they both ended up getting busy with their own lives so they couldn't interact as much, and then the whole Glitchtrap possession thing happens which reunites them but also drives a wedge between them since Will is blindly following Glitchtrap while the night guard is trying to find a way to stop Glitchtrap.
i am so not fucking normal about these characters you all have no idea. oh my god. they have permanent residence in my mind rn. i need people to ask me about them or else I Will Become Violent (/j)
hope y'all liked this, or at least i hope y'all found my passive-agressive notes to myself funny lol. under the cut i typed up all the handwritten ones in case y'all want to read them but can't make out my handwriting
a fuckin uh.. pillar or somethin idk
ooh cool scene transition
how do i convey that he's walking onto a train
dismissive wave
hair is longer to indicate passage of time
pretend this shot doesn't look like total dogshit ok?
hey how did my anatomy manage to get That Much Fucking Worse this far in
there is Something wrong here. i just cannot tell What
that is. so much better what the fuck
ok that's all thank you for looking at my post :]

don't go to reddit don't go there they don't understand the difference between art style and animation quality, bro it's so scary promise me you'll stay safe
#I had a question about jjk to google#and clicking on a reddit link was -- as usual when the topic concerns media -- the worst mistake of my life#jjk s2 has been pulling out ALL THE STOPS to bring us INCREDIBLE animation#in the top 3 animated shows I've ever seen in my life#I thought we all understood this I thought we all had eyeballs#but APPARENTLY because the art/shading style has been simplified compared to S1 it's 'bad' now#my BLOOD boils on behalf of these animators are you INSANE???#the problem with media is that it's for general consumption obvsly and that means random people who don't know anything about anything#like animation#can just Say Stuff with their whole chest and be so wildly ignorantly wrong and there's nothing to be done about it đđđ#anyway. MAPPA animators I see you I love you#I saw the mechamaru fight my jaw fell off my whole face I'm not even recovered yet I promise#anyway#sats speaks

TL might subtly rub off on PK, giving the man the pride (you could say... the mark of?) to try to actually fight the Radiance (again, possibly) leading to either angst or an actually good ending, but ngl I lean heavily into the angst.
Imagine PK simply perishes during the fight after injuring the Radiance greatly, TL wonders where he usually is, only to take a trip to the palace to find a large amount of mourners, and the usual whites of the walls stained in black. You could also make him blame himself for this, I mean, he fought her with his own mark of pride, did he influence him to do this? Did he really rub off on him this much?
The other route is he's simply injured and it's hurt comfort.
NORMAL ABOUT THIS (lying)
I like the he just goddamn dies route because exploring how a character's death would affect the story and other characters is FUN
Let TL wallow in grief and guilt
#asks#thylacines can talk#Also I think Hollow would want to go scorch earth on Radiance's ass which is also fun#Their sentience is outed when they rip her to shreds. Not in a calculated cold attack to save their kingdom but in an angry hateful soulful#and borderline animalistic way of a child grieving their parent. But it's not a victory. There's nothing to celebrate. They drag themself#back home and face their mother now knowing her child is alive and the plan wouldn't have worked anyway. And it's deathly quiet in the#palace. Hallownest might be saved but he's still gone. And killing his murderer didn't magically heal Hollow or their mother or their#sister like they have hoped it would.#Sorry I just got wildly off topic there KDHDNDDB#I wish TL would have gotten closer to PK's children of even WL in their shared grief but he seems like the guy to isolate himself to me

You can tell Legends is a mainline game because the next mainline game acknowledged it (Laventon being on the history class board)
[[If that helps (I forgot to add this I'm sorry if it came across as rude skfbsjd)]]
NAH itâs all good fam! And yeah I guess that makes sense? It just never came off as a main series game to me. Like I mentioned in the tags it doesnât follow the usual formula for a core game (8 gyms/trials + E4 and Champion) so thatâs why I didnât classify it as one. The fact that the gameplay feels completely different from a main series game is another factor too. Maybe Iâm just getting picky with the mechanics idk ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Iâm just slightly annoyed at all the people yelling at me in the tags and saying stuff along the lines of âOP Legends isnât a spin-off this is a bad pollâ like. Sorry?? What do you want me to do I canât edit the poll now that itâs been posted and I canât even edit the tags to tell people that yes I know itâs not a spinoff now. Get over it lol
Anyway what has surprised me the most about this is that there are SO many Pokepark fans. I thought that game was obscure as hell but Iâm shocked at the amount of people vying for it đł
#From what I remember Pokepark was really fun :â)#I still have both of them I just havenât played them in years#I DID watch CJ play through them tho. That was wildly entertaining#Shima answers questions#Anyway off topic. Nfndnnfn#I like the little nod they made to Legends in SV :â)#I just donât personally think it should count as a main series game. Itâs too different#Friends#lollitree

I love when you find an author who just has a good flavor to their writing. It could be the way they handle characters, the way they use certain tropes or themes, even the specific lilt of their words. Its familiar and comforting and carries across different stories, like coming back to a place of comfort and recognizing the furniture.
#not to just wildly tag an individual but this is you for me my friend (Internet stranger)#I always mean to leave duplicate kudos when I read your works but I ALWAYS forget (brain like strainer)#I read Foxfire when Iâm stressed and want to feel nice emotions (with effort)#proserpine is what taught me to give daemon fics a chance#donât even THINK at me about Hydra I just finished rereading it YESTERDAY I wish I had ten hansy fics with your hands on them because you#write them so well- like the Pansy and Harry and Draco and Hermione dynamic is just#everything I never knew I wanted#counterpoint might as well be the fic equivalent of curling up with a nice warm blanket#no I didnât know anything about pern before I opened it WHO NEEDS TO#because you take such good care of us (me)#depaysement was my first dramione fic from you and every other fic Iâve read that isnât yours has been me chasing that experience#anyway ily I feel like Iâve gotten off topic from the point of this post but itâs too late now#if anyone else is out there thinking about dramione or Harry/Hermione/Draco I NEED you to read. somethin' stupid
"and then i go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like i love you."
yang jeongin x reader, fluff | m.list
wc: 1.2k | happy birthday innie âĄ
âi'm not really interested⊠i'm sorry.â
you watch jeongin as he rejects yet another girl. you feel sorry for her as she stands awkwardly in the middle of the quaint cafe, fiddling anxiously with the ends of her shirt.
thankfully, the establishment was relatively empty, save for a few people discretely listening in. she goes on to nod and ramble on further until she had noticed your presence.
"-oh, i didn't realize you have a partner. sorry." her eyes dart over towards you, blush wildly painting her cheeks. she was already gone by the time you could correct her, scuttling away and leaving a trail of gossip in her wake. jeongin watches her leave, pursing his lips.
"you could've let her down easily. the poor girl was shaking..." you voiced out, stirring your iced americano and watching the ice melt bit by bit.
jeongin sighs and takes his seat across from you, taking a sip out of his own cup. he brushes your comment off and starts to talk about a different topic altogether, returning to his smiley demeanor.
you knew how jeongin was. he didn't hesitate to say no whenever someone would just come up to him, asking for his number. it happens more often than not, professions of love seemingly happening out of no where.
you were also used to it, getting stopped so frequently whenever you went out with him. dozens of people that had tried to ask him out only ended in disappointment.
he was seemingly disinterested in things like love. the topic had always eluded him, if you didn't know him any better you could have said he was uncomfortable with the idea. but you didn't pry, he must have a pretty good reason. it was understandable too, his line of work didn't exactly allow it anyways.
despite this, you have admired him in silence ever since the beginning. the feelings that had festered inside of you were kept bottled up until they threatened to spill over. and they almost did, but friendship mattered more and shot down the idea before it could ruin everything.
admittedly, there are days where you just want to explode, to confess and just get it over with. you were a hundred percent positive it would end just the same for you. the preconceived notion of him not liking you in that way, you don't think you could handle it. thinking about being rejected so coldly sends shivers down your spine.
the iced americano that sits in your hands start to sting after a while, but you pay no mind to it. the firm grip you had on it reminds you, mulling over the interaction you had earlier as he rambles about another topic. little things like paying for your coffee and bringing you other small items even if it was his birthday had in short, confused you.
maybe you're misinterpreting and just imagining things. but the way jeongin is adamant that he pays for your order every single time, or the way his hand brushes against yours more often than not and how the warmth of them lingered, says otherwise.
you also notice how he didn't correct the girl's assumption about you two.
the wind dishevels his hair upon stepping out of the cafe, rays of sunlight peaking through the leaves start to dim in the afternoon. the two of you walk for a while, kicking pebbles and rocks in comfortable silence. your head is still occupied with thoughts of him.
another thought comes into your mind amidst the internal chaos, "i almost forgot! i still need to buy you a cake." it had completely slipped from your mind, forgetting why you agreed to go out in the first place.
"it's okay, really." he laughs as you tug him along the sidewalk. you need to do something else to distract your mind and fast. jeongin jogs beside you, keeping up with your pace. it seemed like you weren't taking no for an answer and stopped right in front of a pastry shop.
"is this what you were talking about?" he hums with a grin, leaning down to browse the lines and lines of delicious looking cakes displayed in the glass casing. you made no move to go in just yet, letting him choose silently. his hair, still disheveled and tousled from the wind yet ethereal all the same.
"what if i said i liked you?"
the abrupt stupid question escapes your mouth before you could catch it. his face slowly contorts into an expression, one you could not decipher right away upon hearing it. his back straightens up as keen eyes start to focus on you.
"j-just a hypothetical! i was just really curious because of earlier and it's not serious or-" you wave your hands in front as if to physically wave it off.
"-forget i said anything." you turn your head away, voice becoming tiny and unintelligible. you could feel his eyes burning holes into the side of your head. jeongin says nothing as the tip of your ears burn a bright crimson.
you've done it now, y/n.
"hey," he nudges your side with that eye-crinkling smile you've come accustomed to.
"did you ever wonder why i keep rejecting them?" jeongin now had his hands in his pockets, a small pout forming on his lips as he pops his own query to you, staring back at the glass casings.
you said nothing, unable to respond with a reply or conclusion that would most likely be accurate, you've already embarrassed yourself in front of him today.
jeongin flicks your forehead and scoffs, âthat's because i like you, idiot.â
"it was always you." his eyes were downcast, looking everywhere but yours.
you have gone unresponsive at this point. incredulous eyes stared back at him as you feel your throat dry up. it was because of you? were you dreaming? you must be.
"w-what? really?" you say quite densely whilst rubbing the sore spot on your forehead. he laughs, finally turning to you. "yes, i'm serious."
the wind blows harder this time, removing the locks that obscured his beautifully dimpled face. jeongin's eyes are still trained on you with such longing that you don't recall ever seeing on him, ultimately reminding you that this was indeed real.
"you have no idea how long i've been waiting for you to say those words." you breathe out in relief, one that you weren't even aware of holding.
the proximity between you two sends electrifying shocks, the mere presence of each other is enough to fluster. "i like you too." the words finally make it out of your throat.
you two burst in abrupt laughter, the tip-toeing around the situation suddenly feeling silly. a mixture look of understanding, relief, and love is shared between you two, smiling like love sick fools.
jeongin starts to drag you away by your coat, mimicking how you did to him earlier. "ah! wait, but your cake..." you see the establishment grow smaller and smaller as he drags you away.
"we don't need to worry about that now."
"can i at least buy you a present?" you reply, picking up your feet and walking alongside him. he has a wide grin on his face as he presses a chaste kiss to your cheek. "got my present right here."
you mousily stop in your tracks as a deeper shade of crimson blooms across your face. the two of you walk side by side upon your recovery, pinky fingers now intertwined shyly around each other.

Love Languages
Summary: You're the music teacher at Abbott Elementary, and you find that Melissa Schemmenti's love language may be not-so-gentle bullying- in Italian.
WC: ~2.8k
After accepting a music teaching position in one of the rougher areas in the greater Philadelphia area, itâs safe to say that you arenât quite sure whatâs going to be coming your way. Still, you persevere and head into Willard R. Abbott Elementary Schoolâs professional development week with a smile and your bright and sunny disposition. The only way that you think you can make it as a teacher in a less affluent area with harder backgrounds than what youâre used to is to remain as positive as possible.
You quickly learn that there are about two teachers in the school who attempt to stay as positive as you when you walk into the library for your first meeting of the school year: Janine Teagues and Jacob Hill. The rest of the teachers are older and a bit more seasoned- jaded and attuned to the situation that youâre all in. Itâs an underfunded school with students who donât necessarily come from money with a principal who can poorly manage the building at times.Â
Still, as the meeting drags on (you feel like you donât actually know what youâre walking into; most of the presentation has been pictures of Ava during her vacation this summer), you attempt to stay focused. Eventually, the topic shifts into more educational topics, and you take down a few notes despite the fact that benchmarks and other state mandated tests are not a part of your curriculum. And at some point towards the end, the principal introduces you to the rest of the staff.
âShe our new music teacher,â Ava tells your new coworkers. âDonât go scarinâ her off the way you scared off White, you hear?â She actively points at one teacher in particular with her perfectly manicured nails. âSchemmenti, Iâm talkinâ to you.â
Your eyes follow the direction of Avaâs hand, and sitting there is a beautiful redhead who looks like she hasnât been paying attention to these staff meetings for the last seven years. Striking green eyes are rolled, and Schemmenti scoffs.
At lunch, youâre just trying to heat up your meal when youâre practically bombarded by the two younger teachers who still seem to have a childlike wonder to them.
âYou should sit with us so we can get to know you!â Janine smiles. She had already introduced herself and Jacob to you earlier in the day, and itâs quite clear sheâs taken with your bright, yet somewhat shy, personality.
âAnd why would she do that, pipsqueak?â you hear a low voice growl. âI thought we had our group pretty filled out- and that was before Greg even wormed his way in.â
Your eyes search for who that voice belongs to, and itâs none other than the redhead from earlier. Damn- itâs sexy the way she speaks.
âBecause, Melissa,â Janine gestures wildly. âItâs important that she feels comfortable at this school! I want her to feel just as welcome as I did my first few days here.â
âI didnât do nothinâ to try to make you feel welcome,â Melissa states. âAnd I ainât goinâ out of my way to be nice to someone whoâs just going to leave us in a few days anyway.â Then she turns to look at you. âAinât that right, newbie?â
âI guess youâll have to wait and find out,â you quip as the microwave signals that your food is finished. You smile at the group warmly before sighing. âWhile I do appreciate the invite, I have a few things I still need to set up in my room and get together. Have a nice day though!â
You exit, but not before you hear Melissa grumbling, âSheâs just another leccaculo. Ass kisser.â
You arenât, but you suppose that she doesnât know you yet, so you let it slide and silently head off to your classroom to pour over lesson plans while you eat your meal.
Thatâs only the first time she calls you that. As time goes on, she gets more confident and starts insulting you in Italian to your face. The first time she has the courage to call you a leccaculo directly, you have to bite back a laugh. She has no idea you know what sheâs saying- you had taken Italian all throughout high school and studied abroad in college.
âIâm not an ass kisser,â you chuckle, and your laughter only grows when emerald eyes widen with realization that you understand her. âBut thanks anyway.â
She calls you a myriad of other insults in Italian as the days pass by, whether it be in the staff room or while sheâs dropping off or picking her kids up from music. Occasionally, itâs when you have the unfortunate lunch duty, and she does too. And each time she does it, you just roll your eyes playfully and laugh before letting her know you know the translation, refuting her claim, and thanking her.
It almost becomes like a bit of yours- and inside joke to a certain degree. Sure, she calls the others Italian insults from time to time, but yours seem to be almost daily, if not every day. And youâre the only one who actually knows what sheâs saying, which makes it all the more hilarious.
Itâs not like you really mind either. Itâs quite entertaining to you to see that even when she starts to switch to Sicilian slang, you know what sheâs saying. Itâs keeping the language alive in your mind.
âDonât you care that she says all that stuff to you?â Janine asks you one day after Melissa has left the staff lounge.
You shrug. âIt doesnât phase me.â
âBut you know what sheâs saying to you,â the second grade teacher reminds you. âAnd itâs never nice.â
âI do,â you chuckle. âListen, I know sheâs mean, and sheâs rude, but her voice is so lovely. Iâd listen to her call me names all day. And I do. Even at home.â
âAt home?â Janine gives you a look that tells you sheâs clearly confused, but you just shrug her off with a smile.Â
âI live like⊠seven doors down from her. When I go on my walks after school, sheâs pulling into her driveway just in time to throw an insult my way. And why should I dwell on it when I know at this point, she doesnât mean what sheâs saying? She just likes speaking her language and having someone who understands what sheâs saying.â
And with that, you exit the staff room to head to the bathroom before your whirlwind of an afternoon starts.Â
To a degree, youâre right. The fiery Italian second grade teacher loves that she can speak in the language she used to talk in growing up. Someone finally understands what sheâs saying. Itâs nostalgic. But at this point, Melissa just likes hearing your voice. She likes to see that dumb smirk that you give her as you reveal that you know exactly what she was calling you, before it melts away into that bright smile of yours. Melissa Schemmenti realizes that she just might have some feelings for you.
Once she has that revelation though, she doesnât change what she does. If anything, she lays them on a little thicker, challenging you to fight her back or tell her sheâs gone too far with a few of her insults. But of course, youâre a champion and you can only laugh at some of the insanely creative insults she comes up with in a foreign language.
âYou have quite the imagination when it comes to what you choose to say,â you chuckle as she hurls one at you while picking her students up. âI am indeed not⊠that, but thank you.â
Sheâs about to say something else while her students wait for her at the corner of the hall, but then Barbara is coming down with her students, and youâre forced to turn your brain back on to work with kindergarteners.
âWell, Miss Schemmenti,â you smirk. âI canât wait to see what you come up with next.â
âNeither can I, Cagacazzo.â The redhead chuckles.
âNot that either,â you playfully roll your eyes before turning to the kindergarten teacher. âWhy, hello Mrs. Howard!â
âHello dear,â Barbara greets you warmly, a hand stretching out to gently squeeze your arm. âHow are you today?â
âIâm wonderful,â you smile. âBut I think my day is about to get better, now that I have your kiddos.â
âI do hope they behave for you,â Barb tells you, although she gives a few of her more rowdy students a pointed look.
âThey always do,â you assure her sweetly. Only then do you realize that Melissa is still standing there. âMiss Schemmenti? You there?â you tease.
The redhead begins to flounder for words, but Barbara steps in to save her. âMelissa and I were going to chat on our ways back to the classrooms, dear. Donât mind her.â
In all truth, the second grade teacher just loves how your voice sounds. Itâs amazing the way that you can switch from a lower register in your vocals while teasing her and bantering with her before raising your pitch and sounding like an angel to speak with Barbara and her students.
The two head off once you explain to the small class what theyâre to do upon entering your classroom and ushering them in.Â
The pair is a few paces away when Barbara leans in and quietly whispers, âGirl, you have it bad for Y/N.â
âI do not,â Melissa grumbles her denial as she gestures for her students to continue on down the hallway.
âDonât act like you donât,â the kindergarten teacher hums. âI see the way you look at her, mmm, yes.â
âYouâre crazy.â
âNot as crazy as you are if you donât notice that you want to court the music teacher,â Barbara chuckles lowly as she turns into her own classroom.
âBarb!â Melissa rolls her eyes. âI donât know how many times I have to tell you, this ainât Bridgerton!â
âIt may not be,â the kindergarten teacher quips. âBut I know what my eyes see!â
âSei pazza,â Melissa calls back as she too enters her room. âCrazy!â
Barbara Howard is a lot of things, but crazy isnât one of them. And both veteran teachers at the school know it.Â
A few weeks pass, and the routine that you find yourself in with the redhead continues on as usual. The routines that you find yourself in with the others soldiers on. Melissa is snarky and hard to read, often times brushing you off. You still allow her to insult you with a smile and a laugh, refuting every name that she calls you. You settle into easy conversation with the others at lunch, always excited to hear what theyâre doing in their classrooms that week, or to just converse about whatever could be going on in their minds at that moment.
You find that you quite enjoy having this odd little group as your work family. Youâre not quite sure how you managed to weasel yourself into their very tight knit group, but you arenât complaining. It makes working at Abbott a lot easier than when you were working in a school where homeroom teachers essentially told you that you werenât a real teacher. How they could treat you like that baffled you then, and it baffles you to this day. Youâre just thankful you got out of there and are now being appreciated at your new place of employment.
âHave a nice weekend,â you tell your colleagues as you go to leave the staff room. You smile brightly and wave at them before smirking. âAnd no, Melissa, I am not whatever you were going to call me this time.â
âDamn, taking my fun away,â the redhead grumbles. âIâll just save it for when youâre on your walk later.â
You actually donât see the redhead pulling in while youâre on your daily after school walk to decompress. Her car isnât in the driveway either, so you know she isnât home. Itâs odd, sure, but once youâve passed, you donât think much else of it.
The weekend is here, and you thank goodness for that. The kids have been amped up what with the holiday season about to kick off with Halloween before leading into November and December.Â
Once you return from your walk, youâre showered and changed into sweatpants, takeout is ordered and eaten; youâve allowed yourself to indulge after the hectic week. You have no plans other than to curl up with a glass of wine and a good book. If you drink enough, you may just end up at the keyboard that you have set up, or perhaps youâll bring out the guitar that sits in the corner of your living room. But you know one thing for sure: you are not leaving the comfort of your own home.
Youâre about two-thirds of the way through your small bottle of wine and getting a bit restless laying on the couch with your book. You sigh softly as you put your bookmark in place and stand to head for the keyboard when your phone lights up.
Melissa Schemmenti is calling you? Itâs⊠you glance at the clock on your wall. Itâs nearing eleven. Why is she calling you?
âMelissa?â you answer, clearly confused.
âI- I donât know why I called. Sorry. Have a good night,â the redheadâs voice crackles through the phone. And even though you arenât with her, and you really have no idea why sheâs calling this late at night, you can sense that thereâs something off with her. She doesnât have the same bit that she usually does- she almost sounds⊠scared?
But before you can react, the call disconnects. You shoot her a text asking if everything is alright, and when five minutes go by without a reply, you run a tired hand over your face before pulling your shoes on.
Youâve never really noticed how eery the area that you reside in is at night. Youâre rarely out this late, and when you are, you arenât walking the streets. Still, you head in the direction of the redheadâs house. It doesnât take you long. Once youâre at her front door, you take a fortifying breath before knocking gently.
You shouldnât be shocked when she opens the door wielding a weapon: her precious baseball bat.
âSeriously?â you ask. âI knocked so gently, how could you think someone was trying to hurt you?â
âI never know,â Melissa answers. âI bet youâre an idiota who answers the door without a bat, arenât you?â
You chuckle softly. âI am not an idiot, but I can say with confidence that I donât have a baseball bat with me when I open the door.â
âWell, you should,â the redhead counters. âWhy are you here?â
âMelissa, you called me at eleven at night sounding terrified and then didnât answer my text. I do care about you. you know. I wanted to make sure you were okay,â you tell her as she sets down her baseball bat.
Your coworker hums gently. âI thought you were barely tolerating me this whole time. I mean, Iâve seen how you are with the others- and Iâm not like that. I canât be like that, even if I wanted to.â
âI know,â you smile softly. âYouâre not easy to know, and you make it hard to like you sometimes. But Iâve always liked a challenge, and sometimes you have to meet people at their own pace.â
âBut I didnât expect you to come all the way out here. I wasnât thinking; I just woke up scared and calling you was the first thing I could do. You didnât need to check up on me.â Melissa welcomes you into her house.
âNo,â you sigh as you make your way into her house. âBut I wanted to. Thank you for letting me in.â
âYouâre thanking me for letting you into my house?â the redhead quirks a brow.
You chuckle. âWell, that. But also for letting me in and past your rough exterior. Youâre finally starting to meet me halfway.â
The redhead just rolls her eyes. âJust because I called you in a moment of weakness doesnât mean I donât still think youâre a barbone.â
âI canât be a bum,â you smile cheekily. âI have a job, a house, and I came all this way to check on you in the middle of the night.â
âOnly an idiota would venture out at eleven at night without a baseball bat,â Melissa counters. âYou know I ainât letting you walk home alone now. So, how about a glass of wine, and maybe a movie before I shove you in my guest room for the night?â
It only occurs to you after you wake up the next morning (on the couch, with Melissa using your chest for a pillow), that she couldâve just driven you home.

I try to answer other peopleâs call lights if Iâm not busy, because if my work is done and Iâve helped out with other peopleâs work, I can fully commit to slacking off guilt free. And usually what people want is bathroom, snacks, and/or pain meds, all of which are pretty easy to address and if thereâs anything too complicated, I can always call the nurse. Anyway, I go answer this call light, and itâs for a patient I donât know and have never spoken to before. I pop in like âhi can I help you?â as I feel so quietly smug about how Helpful I am being, and the patient goes, âdo you know if Iâm dying tonight? If I am, I should call my family.â
To be so clear. I was expecting like. a request for a ginger ale. I was not prepared emotionally for a very sick stranger grappling with the angst of potentially imminent death. So I go, âUMMM. I DONâT KNOW. LEMME CHECK WITH YOUR NURSE AND SEE IF SHE KNOWS.â This seemed heinously inadequate in the face of their obvious despair, so I added, âprobably not in the next ten minutes if youâre able to sit up and ask, but I canât make any promises.â
Donât think that was the ideal follow up sentence. But it didnât seem to make the patient any sadder than they already were. I used to really live in fear of being the nurse in someoneâs anecdote about a wildly inappropriate thing said to them by their nurse. Itâs not so much as Iâve gotten over that fear as Iâve accepted that my job thrusts me into a lot of situations where I have to talk about extremely intense topics to the people most intimately affected by those topics, often with no time, no prep, and no information. At this point, I just try my best to ground my inarticulate fumblings in as much genuine care as I can express, and thank God I donât fuck up worse and more often.

also i have a longer post abt this cooking in my drafts but iâm so tired of ppl summarizing luciusâs 2.05 storyline as âeveryone is dismissive of luciusâs trauma and tells him to just get over itâ bc what actually happens in that episode is that everyone else has moved on and lucius is MAD AT THEM for it to the point where he becomes dismissive of their trauma. even pete is just concerned and confused up until the point where lucius snaps at him like âyou have no idea what iâve been throughâ and THATâS when pete is like âdude!! i am also fucked up by what happened!!! youâre not the only one suffering!!!â and then izzy gives him the shark and is like âdo whatever you need to do to heal but you do need to put in the work, itâs hard but not moving on is worseâ which to me feels wildly ooc for izzy to have this much emotional wisdom all of a sudden but redeemed!izzy in general was just a completely different guy from the izzy i knew. i got off topic anyway the point is the show is not dismissing luciusâs trauma itâs addressing a specific type of a poor coping method that i like to call âwallowing in it.â itâs something im personally familiar with and itâs a very easy and paradoxically a somewhat comforting way to try and cope with trauma/mental illness but in the long run it only hurts you and the people close to you. healing is hard and it takes active effort but itâs worth it
