I've grown rather fond of this face, you know. Can you at least try and keep it in one piece?
I feel like every time I turn around in my game these two are covered in blood, and I'm confused HOW that has happened. Especially when Ophira is a long bow wielding ranger 95% of the time and thus never is in the thick of it....

Your friends pushed you out of the club, all of you laughing, hands clutched around your waists as loud, drunken giggles fill in the night air. It was a wild night; your friends invited you to the club to take your mind off your stupid boyfriend. You thought you’d end up moping around, too much of a buzzkill to ever let loose because it wasn’t that easy to stop thinking about him, but even you were surprised when you started grinding with people on the dance floor just three drinks later.
The gals were more than delighted to see you enjoying your night, only dragging you out the club when you nearly shoved your tongue down another man’s throat.
Scratch that – your friends called you to hang out because you lied about having a shitty day at work. You’ve had your fair share of shitty days, but you were one of the most prominent lawyers in your firm, no one dared gave you a bad day. Your subordinates knew that if they even looked your way without your permission, you wouldn’t hesitate to dump paperwork on them, or assign them to the nastiest cases just to piss them off.
Yeah, you were sort of a bitch, but you didn’t care.
It took a lot to get where you were now. It wasn’t easy to be a woman in a male-dominated workplace and you were forced to strip your softness off, replacing it with hard armor and sharp tongue concealed under bold red lips, a tight pencil skirt that accentuated your curves, and a pair of black suede pumps.
You deserved all your success. You were smart, stunning, confident, powerful – so then why did you feel like shit around your shitty boyfriend?
The answer was loud and clear. It bothered you to no end that he wanted to keep your relationship a secret because his family was too different from yours, coming up with a shitty excuse that you were just “too different.” He never bothered explaining, and every time you confronted him about, he’d only wave his hand, distract you with those delicious and soft lips of his until you forget it over and over again.
You were okay with it at first. It wasn’t a really serious relationship; you only started dating him because you saw yourself a lot in him – confident, self-assured, maybe even a little cocky – plus, he was extremely attractive.
But the longer you spent time with him, you were beginning to fall in love.
Yes, you, the ice princess of one of the most respected law firms all over the city was beginning to soften up at a certain blue-eyed man who had magical hands.
But tonight – tonight you’d forget about him.
Your stomach was heavy with expensive liquor and you were nearly staggering on your knees, the only thing preventing you from falling were your more sober friends. The others were holding you close to keep you upright, while one of your friends moved to a quieter part of the block to call an Uber for you. Your friends were all happily married, some with children, so they couldn’t really stay out too late at night and chaperone you all the way back home.
You were well-aware you were being a bother, but fuck, couldn’t you lean on someone for just once? Sighing, you leaned closer to your warm friend, mumbling something about wanting to forget about everything you’ve been through.
“There, there,” she patted your head comfortingly, “You’ll be fine, babe, you’re a strong woman. I know you’ll get through this.”
“But I hate it,” you drunkenly admitted, lips trembling the more you thought about him, every stupid little thing about him – his soft white hair, those pretty blue eyes he always hid under shades even at night, his large, calloused hands that always felt so rough when keeping your legs open for him and you couldn’t even start talking about his cock, he was just so blessed and perfect in every little thing that you hated it. You hated him. “I don’t like this feeling,” you sniffled, “I feel like I’m being looked down on, that I’m being pushed to the side. I feel unimportant, like I’m not good enough.”
“Who said you aren’t?”
You froze in your friend’s arms, eyes meeting with those blue ones you could never get enough of. As if noticing your silence, your friend immediately covers you with her arm, glaring at your boyfriend. “Do we know you or something?”
“No,” Satoru replies coolly, brows furrowed in the state you were in. You turned away from him with a scoff, arms crossed on your chest. Why did he have to be here out of all places? Wasn’t he busy with work or whatever family shit he apparently couldn’t tell you about even though you’ve both been dating for a year and a half now? He just wasn’t giving you a break, and the hairs on your arm stood up when he said, “Not that you have to, but may I please drive Y/N home?”
“She’s not going anywhere—”
“She’s a friend of mine,” he insisted, turning to you with a pleading look in his eyes. You almost melted. Almost. “I need to talk to her about something.”
You rolled your eyes and stepped forward, your friend’s arm latching onto yours. You could tell she was worried from the way her gaze darted back and forth between you two. Satoru was, after all, clearly uninvited, and he didn’t seem like your type either. You always insisted you preferred refined man, men like his friend Nanami Kento, but alas, you were stuck dating this one instead.
“It’s fine,” you told her with a fake smile, “I’ll call you later when I get home.”
You never got to call her – simply because you didn’t make it home. The moment Satoru closed the car doors behind you, you both got into a heated argument. Satoru hated silences and always made sure the car was filled with music, but this time, he didn’t notice there weren’t any songs when you opened your mouth.
Maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was the anger and pent-up tension of not being able to hold him and kiss him in public like normal couples did, in addition to the fact Satoru never explained why he insisted on keeping you a secret – whatever it was, you just snapped.
“I don’t even understand why I’m still dating you!” you huffed, legs crossed on top of the other as you gazed out the window. Lips trembling, you tried so hard to not cry, especially not in front of the man who was breaking your heart. “This is hardly a relationship when I’m not free to call or text you as you please, when I can’t go out with you on dates and we’re always hanging in my apartment. I’m your girlfriend, Satoru, we’ve been together for a long time but I honestly don’t even feel like it. What the hell are we dating for then?”
Satoru clenched his teeth, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. “How many times do I have to tell you that I love you,” he said coolly, acting unbothered and unaffected as ever, but the clench in his jaw said otherwise. “If that’s not enough—”
“Of course it’s not enough!”
“I’m trying here too, okay?” Satoru slammed on the brakes and parked on a desolated spot, hands running through his hair while he breathed heavily. Once he’d calmed down, he shook his head, refusing to look you in the eye like a man. “I’m trying my best. It’s just hard. It isn’t as easy as it looks.”
“What isn’t easy as it looks? Dating me? Letting the whole world know I’m yours?” when Satoru didn’t respond, you scoffed, patience running low and thin. “You’re pathetic, Satoru. Dating you was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, and I thought I was a smart woman.”
With a shake of your head, you slung your purse over your shoulder and reached for the car door. You were about to leave when Satoru suddenly pulled you towards him, his lips slamming into yours.  Like always, you fell into his trap, into the blissful pleasure that was his lips and his hands, and you hated it, hated him, hated him so fucking much because you were so tired of his entire existence.
You wanted to let him know he was insufferable.
You wanted him to feel the pain and misery he put you through.
“I fucking hate you,” you snarled as Satoru kept fucking into you, the entire car windows fogged and the vehicle shaking. “I wish I never met you, you asshole,” Satoru, displeased, only buries himself deeper into you, as if they would erase his mistakes and shortcomings.
Satoru’s large hands snake to your waist and onto your breasts, expertly tweaking them between his fingers. Your head fell back to the crook of his shoulder, your back pressed against his hard chest as Satoru trapped you in his strong arms, impaling you on his cock over and over again. “You’re lying,” he whispered into your neck, tongue and teeth playfully sucking at the tender flesh. His grip on your hip was bruising and possessive, and your breasts bounced fervently at how he snapped his hips upwards to feel your walls coat him and hug him tightly and warmly. “Why would you hate me, sweet girl? Don’t I always make you feel good? Don’t I remind you enough that you’re the best fucking thing ever?”
You didn’t respond right away, your breath taken away with how you could never get enough of this, of him. He was right no matter how much you denied it. Despite being terrible in everything else, Satoru knew and respected you, even admired your dominance and intelligence when other men were intimidated by it.
No, he worshipped you. He made you feel like you were a divine goddess when he tugged at your hair to tilt your cheek to him, his tongue slithering to your lips to taste himself on his tongue from when you previously busted his nut with just your mouth.
Lipsticks smeared on his cheeks and crescent moons on his pale thigh from your nails, Satoru looked wonderful beneath you like this.
He was beautiful, so damn beautiful, but it didn’t change the fact he’d put you through hell these past few weeks.
No, it wasn’t just the past few weeks. Things were always complicated with him. He was perfect in everything else but when it came to you, he made it a mission to hide you and your relationship, changing your contact name to a totally random one “just in case.”
Your mind was confuzzled and you felt like you were on the urge of breaking apart from both his ministrations and his confusing treatment over you. Before you knew it, you were kissing him back fervently with the intensity of your hatred over this man.
Your hand reached his to guide it to rub at your clit, and Satoru, eager to make you feel good as always, happily obliged. Satoru kept bouncing you on his cock until you were too overwhelmed to speak, crying and mumbling incomprehensible words.
Him, only him, would ever have the ability to let the sharp-tongued and intelligent woman who never bat an eye in court lose her wide vocabulary, falling apart in his arms while his long length abused your puffy lips.
“You made me feel like shit,” you finally admitted, tugging at his hair until Satoru is lowly groaning at the slight sting. But did you care? Of course you didn’t. You wanted to hurt him too.
“How so, sweet girl?”
“I can never have you the way I want,” you answered through gritted teeth, moaning out when Satoru suddenly thrusted too deep, hitting your most sensitive spot that had you quivering in his hold. “You don’t—” you gasped, “You don’t understand what I feel, how you make me feel like I’m never good enough for you. That’s the reason why you don’t want anyone else knowing, right? ‘Cause I’m not good enough for you, never gonna be good—”
Satoru didn’t let you finish your words, shutting you up with his cock instead. The vehicle shook uncontrollably with your mating sessions, and Satoru silences you by pulling at your leg to press it on his chest instead.
The sudden switch in positions had your muscles tensing and stretching, adding only to both your pleasures with the new thrown in factor of slight pain. You felt Satoru kiss your neck down to your shoulders, scraping his canines until you were absolutely lost. You gave in, you gave up, head lolling back next to his loving lips that murmured sweet nothings.
“Not true, sweet girl,” he reminded you, flattening you on his cock and making you roll your hips while you slid up and down his pole sensually. Unlike the previous pace, the slow sensation of your pussy hugging his cock with your arousal letting him slide in easily allowed you to feel every part of him, almost mind-wrecking at how good he’s able to make you feel even after such a long time of having him already.
“You’re the sexiest and most intelligent woman I’ve ever met, the best, the absolute blessing of my life, and I just want to protect you, sweet girl. You’re too precious for me to lose,” Satoru kept mumbling over and over again.
You could no longer process his words functionally, not when he’s slamming you down his length like that and burying himself in you as if he didn’t want to be anywhere else.
Satoru’s hands were still curious, appreciative and gentle as he runs his hands, dipping into all your curves and pressing into your most sensitive spots the way you liked it.
“You’re always so good for me so no, sweet girl, never gonna let you go, not when you’re so perfect for me,” Satoru eased your worries – temporarily – with his words, and you’d believe his lie, you’d fall into the same mistakes over and over again because you were just that weak and powerless when it came to him. “You’re made just for me, sweet girl, you’re the prettiest and your pussy is the prettiest – I worship you, I adore you. You’re so divine.”
You blamed it all on your ego.
He praised you so well, made you feel so good and always placed you on top of the world when he’s inside you like this. Even if you knew he’d knock you down the pedestal just hours later, you opened your doors for him all over again.
Satoru knew this too, because he rammed inside your walls and ruined everything that you held firm beliefs in, his large hands smacking your ass to urge you to bounce on him like you weren’t made for any other purpose than to be the woman he adored.
You lied to yourself – you always did – but did you care? So what if you couldn’t be the one he really loved? What did it all matter when you were the one he worshipped?
For the sake of the praise and the compliments, you’d let him fuck you and play with your heart over and over again. It was a toxic routine you’d never get tired of, and you no longer complained, forgetting about everything he’d done and every heartbreak he caused you because he was there, whispering into your ears how good you made him feel and how you were the only one made to take him, and you didn’t care. Not anymore – not when you were worshipped.

Part 2
Summary: Taehyung and you are friends with benefits, but you’re having a hard time maintaining this secret relationship when a close friend of yours starts falling in love with him.
Warning: Suggestive themes, mentions of alcohol and casual sex, cursing and crude language/humor
Genre: Fluff, Angst, fwb!au, college!au
Word Count: 6,589 Words
Taehyung and you were never one for relationships. You knew it, he knew it, the long list of lovers you two had could attest to that fact the most. You two were notorious for the number of people you slept with, not that it was any of their business anyway.
It wasn’t like you intended to be with him. In fact, your initial impression of him was that of annoyance. Taehyung would flirt with you shamelessly during parties and often referred to you as his “rival”. With the nonstop back and forth between you two, your mutual friends were easily agitated with how you played hard to get. They had to admit, though, it was hilarious seeing Taehyung insist on taking you out on a date, only for you to insist that he should rot in hell.
This went on for a whole year, so it only made sense when the second year of university came around and you had decided to cave in to his boyish charms. It was meant to just be a bit of fun with nothing tying you down to each other. You’d have sex at his place, and his place only, and never speak of it to anyone on campus.
No one knew of your escapades and frankly, it was easier that way. Your friends were sure you hated him and his friends were sure he’d never have a chance. It was the perfect arrangement. They didn’t have to know about the late nights of sneaking into his dorm room, the times he helped you escape from the campus guards at the crack of dawn, or even hiding you in his closet when his friends came over for a surprise visit.
As far as you were concerned, this relationship would stay a secret.
You didn’t need to be Einstein to know that Taehyung was hooking up with another girl just as consistently as he was fucking you. It wasn’t a shocking fact, but you had your regulars besides Taehyung too. It was just the way he described her that surprised you.
“She’s like the total package y’know?” he said after a particular night of companionship which led you tangled up in his arms on his couch, naked and panting. “Sucks she has to waste it all on me, but she’s a nice girl. Might have to end it quickly before I catch feelings.”
Taehyung caught feelings way more often than you did. It was easy for him to get attached to girls, unlike you. Most of the men you slept with were ready to leave by the next day so liking someone you hooked up with was rare. Taehyung must’ve really taken a liking to this girl with the way he was stroking your hair, as if in deep thought over his own words.
You’ve never met her, but you knew she had to be pretty. Every girl Taehyung had his eyes set on was beautiful, yet you knew he played favorites. After almost every night you spent at his place, he’d reveal that you were his favorite girl, and while you didn’t really take that as a compliment, you’d always reply that he was your favorite too. The two of you sprawled out on his couch sipping the whiskey you poured before he fucked you, it was almost like trash acknowledging trash.
“But I don't think anyone could replace you,” he muttered into your hair, taking one long gulp of his drink.
You shook your head.
“I can name four other guys that I could hit up instead of you,” you teased, not really believing your own words.
Taehyung looked at you seriously and set his glass down. You did too.
“You sure about that?” he asked lowly, caressing your bare calf with his fingertips. You giggled at the sensation.
“I don’t know,” you said playfully. “Why don’t you show me why you’re my favorite, Tae?”
He gave a small scoff and practically pounced on you, pushing you down onto the couch without a moment of hesitation.
Now him fucking another person wouldn’t have normally been a problem since Taehyung’s women came and went like the wind most of the time. There were instances where he’d claim that he found “the one” and then text you just minutes later asking for you to come over. The thing was, though, the girl he was messing around with- who he talked so highly about- just happened to be your roommate, Hana. Cute and innocent Hana who would never hurt a fly.
Taehyung didn’t know this fact since you’ve never invited him over, but it was a downright horrifying experience when you had caught him making out with her on Hana’s bed. You had made things worse unknowingly, by also bringing over a boy from the club you were partying at earlier.
“What the fuck am I looking at right now?” you shuddered, attempting to cover your eyes from their frazzled state. You did not want your image of Hana to be tainted by someone like Taehyung.
“Oh my gosh, I thought you were sleeping over someone else’s!” Hana screeched, covering Taehyung’s body with her blanket. Of course, he had to be shirtless.
“I thought you were visiting family!” you shouted frantically.
The tension in that room was suffocating and you couldn’t shake the fact that Taehyung was the one who made it more awkward. He had pulled away from Hana pretty quickly, but he glared so viciously at the boy you were holding hands with just earlier. His death stare was evident to everyone in the room.
“Yeah, I think I should go,” your date said, not quite remembering his name. Whoever he was left hastily and you were left to stare at two deer in headlights.
“[Y/N], this is Taehyung,” Hana said, flustered. “I think you guys already know each other, though.”
You tried to suppress your laughter at the way Taehyung’s face changed so easily when the guy you were trying to hook up with had left. Now he just wore a smug look on his face. You didn’t really know where that came from, though.
“Yeah, but we’re not in really good terms,” you lied, trying to hide your own embarrassment. "In fact, I’m sick to the stomach just looking at him.”
Taehyung grinned, knowing that you were just trying to not come off suspicious.
“Well maybe another time, huh Han Han?” he said, nuzzling into her neck but keeping his eyes on you. You rolled your eyes at the nickname and his obvious glances. Taehyung never stopped being a dick, even in these situations.
Hana only nodded and stood up, helping Taehyung put on his shirt and jacket. He also had to... zip his pants back up. Taehyung had winked to you on his way out, which went noticed by Hana who glared at him slightly. She softened the glare when she saw that you had no reaction to his lame attempts to flirt. You were far too used to Taehyung’s stupidity to really be fazed.
“Nice to see you too [Y/N],” he said huskily before exiting the dorm. He for sure was going to get caught by the campus guards downstairs and you’d look forward to hearing him complain about it the next time you see him. You laughed as soon as he left, wiping a stray tear from your eye. Taehyung had really dug himself into deep shit this time.
“Taehyung? Really, Hana? When you can do so much better?” you cackled. “I am so disappointed in you.”
It was true after all. Hana was the typical good girl type and came to college with the sole intent of studying and getting her diploma as quickly as possible. You admired her for that. She was a motivated student with clear goals in her life, while you were more of the “enjoy life in the moment” type.
It definitely came as a shock that Hana was able to fall for Taehyung like so many other girls had; it was obvious in the way she blushed. You cooed at how cutely she was reacting. You’ve never seen her so flustered like this with anyone else. It kind of made your heart clench, though, and not it a good way.
“[Y/N]~~,” she whined, pouting lightly. “I’m so stupid. He asked me for my chem notes and instead I gave him my first kiss. I’m such an idiot.”
You laughed even louder, falling to the floor. Classic Taehyung move, he never changes. You could list ten other girls he used the same tactics with.
“Hana, it’s okay I’m not judging you,” you said, grabbing a nearby chair to bring yourself back up once again after a few more giggles escaped your lips. “Actually I am, but don’t worry too much about what I think.”
You patted her head as you walked past her, collapsing onto your bed. You were extremely drunk before you came into the room and you needed that laughing session to finally start sobering up. The guy you were about to bring in wasn’t even that cute anyway, you sighed.
“You know walking into that mess actually kind of saved me,” you said, languidly. “The guy I was about to fuck didn’t have a big dick.”
Hana gasped at your word choice and slapped your thigh.
“[Y/N], you’re so crude!”
You smirked at her innocence. It wasn’t like you’d actually seen it, you just felt it earlier in the club while you were dancing. Nothing to write home about.
“You were literally sucking faces with the Kim Taehyung just seconds ago,” you yawned. “I will not accept any form of criticism from you.”
She chuckled lightly and played with her fingers. Sure, maybe you were being a hypocrite for teasing her especially when you and Taehyung were fuck buddies, but you already knew your standards were low. It was almost expected of you to get together with him eventually.
You never thought Hana would be into a guy like Taehyung, but then again, it was the classic bad boy and good girl story. Some part of you was envious, but you couldn’t help but want to cheer her on. They felt like the main characters of some romantic drama you’d binge-watch, only to be pissed off when the second leads (who were much hotter) would be forgotten in the script. You shook your head in disappointment. Hana deserved so much better than Taehyung.
“You know he’s fucking other girls right?” you said, sitting up and looking at her seriously. “He’s a bad person, Hana.”
She pouted but nodded slowly. Something tells you that she doesn’t mind.
“Yeah, I know,” she said sadly. “It seems like all my friends have been with him at least once, but I can’t help but feel like I’m special? I don’t know. Sometimes he doesn’t even ask for homework when we meet up... We just talk, y’know? He’s so good with his words, [Y/N]...”
Hana took a seat next to you and winced at the smell of alcohol that radiated off of you. You couldn’t help but feel bad for Hana. She was falling for the oldest tricks in the book because she was so naive. You didn’t want to have to see her get hurt by a guy that was passing college from copying other people’s homework.
“Hana, I’m gonna tell you this in the nicest way possible,” you said, facing her but making sure your nasty breath didn’t make its way towards her. “No girl is special to Taehyung. He does things like that to get in your head and make you want more. He’ll throw you away when he gets what he wants from you.”
“But-”
She tried to speak yet you cut her off. You didn’t really know what motivated you to speak so badly of Taehyung, but you did so anyways.
“He’s exactly like me, Hana,” you continued on. “We’re both fucked in the head when it comes to romance, love, and all that shit. And do you remember how I described myself when we first met?”
Hana sighed, obviously not wanting to repeat the derogatory words you’d said about yourself so long ago.
“Trash,” she muttered silently, looking at the floor. She felt guilty just for saying it.
You smiled and ruffled her hair. She only furrowed her eyebrows in response.
“Just be careful, okay?”
“It’s just Taehyung,” Hana chuckled. “How much damage could he do?”
Hana didn’t seem like she wanted to take your advice because you caught Taehyung and her everywhere on campus almost everyday. You saw her tutoring him in the library, walking to class with each other, and even sharing an ice cream cone! Just how badly did Taehyung need to pass Bio-Chemistry this quarter?
You felt mean thinking such things but you couldn’t help but be doubtful of Taehyung, especially when he was still meeting up with you every weekend in his dorm. You’d have thought they were dating if you didn’t know any better, but there you were, in his bed naked for the second time that week. Sometimes you wondered what was going on in that stupid, beautiful head of his.
“Are you sure you should still be seeing me?” you asked him, head buried in his chest. You could hear his heartbeat so clearly on nights like this.
“You caught feelings or what?” he teased, taking a stray eyelash out of your cheek. “That would be a big problem wouldn’t it, [Y/N]?”
You rolled your eyes and turned around to face the wall.
“I’d be caught dead before that happens,” you whispered, snuggling into his arm underneath your head. Taehyung traced circles on your waist, mesmerized on how wonderful your skin felt against his.
“Why should we stop?” he asked, tilting your head towards him to meet his eyes.
“Hana,” you replied back curtly. There was no malice in your voice. You just stated her name as if it was a fact. Taehyung only sighed in response.
“Means nothing,” he muttered, nuzzling into your hair. “You’re still my favorite.”
You clicked your tongue at his harsh words, but you couldn’t help but feel relieved. Maybe there was a chance that you two could still have this... relationship without adding any more complications. Deep down, you were proud that he still considered you his favorite, even if it might not have meant anything to him.
“Just go to sleep, jackass,” you whispered, dozing off at the sound of his steady breathing. You felt safe in his arms.
Taehyung wanted, so desperately, for you to notice that he had said that while sober. It was meant to be a confession, no matter how vague it might have been.
Before he could talk any further, though, you were already sleeping soundly against him. He’d have to save it for another day, Taehyung thought. He leaned down and kissed your eyelid, which fluttered a bit at the contact. Taehyung chuckled.
“What did I do to deserve you?” he whispered, wishing you could hear him.
You entered the campus restroom, fully intent on just touching up your makeup, but a cramping sensation in your gut had you rushing into one of the stalls to relieve yourself of the pain.
As you were about to flush, you heard the clacking of stilettos outside of the stall and you could recognize that noise from anywhere. They were girls in your marketing class, the ones who were in the brink of failing but managed to seduce the TA last minute to get passing marks. You respected them, honestly. If only they didn’t hate your guts.
“I heard [Y/N] and Tae are seeing each other,” the girl with red heels said. You winced at the nickname she gave him. She got dumped by Taehyung a year ago and couldn’t keep her nose out of his business since then.
“No fucking way,” the black heels responded, clearly applying lipstick as her words were somewhat distorted. “That’s like an STD waiting to happen.”
The two of them had started to cackle and you had to admit, that was a pretty good joke. How they found out was unknown to you. Taehyung must have let it slip or something. You’d make sure to give a talking to him later about it.
“No, but get this,” red heels started, “You know that small girl, Hana?”
Black heels girl nodded, you recognized the motion through the sound of her dangling earrings.
“Taehyung managed to get in her pants too and they’re like, kinda serious. Like, about to date serious.”
Black heels gasped over-dramatically and dropped her lipstick into the sink. She picked it up but was still very much shocked.
“But isn’t [Y/N] and her like, super close?” she asked. “Does Hana even know?”
The girl with red stilettos clicked her tongue thrice as if disapproving what her friend was saying.
“You know [Y/N],” she said with a sigh. “You think she cares?”
Her words stung more than you thought. Did people really think of you that lowly? Did they really think you’d betray your friend like that?
But then again, weren’t you betraying Hana? She liked Taehyung so much and here you were, banging him every weekend with very little consideration towards her feelings. You clenched your thigh with your fingers until you were sure it would leave a bruise. Should you have told her that Taehyung and you were fucking behind her back?
“Well, it’s none of my business anyway,” red shoes continued. “Those two will get what’s coming to them.”
Even as the two left the restroom, you contemplated on their words further, wondering if they were right about you. Somehow your heart felt heavy at the thought of it all. Were you a bad person?
You couldn’t shake off the guilt that tugged at your heartstrings every time you saw Hana get ready for a date with Taehyung. You wanted to seem interested everytime she asked for your opinion on her clothes, but you just couldn’t get those words out of your mind. Would those girls tell Hana if they got the chance?
The emotional torment hit the hardest when you sat on Taehyung’s floor, him playing with your fingers as you rested your head on his shoulder. You had both ventured off to the weird parts of Youtube, watching couples explain why they broke up with each other on his phone. It left a sour taste in your mouth.
“Could you imagine being that hungry for attention that you’d broadcast something like this to millions of people?” he chuckled. “Like just break up behind the scenes, no one cares enough about your love life to want a 40-minute video on it.”
You weren’t really paying attention to what he was saying, but was more focused on the several notifications that popped up on the screen from all of Taehyung’s other hookups. You recognized their names easily. Yumi, Jiseo, Sarang, etc. Even your phone didn’t quite blow up with messages like him.
“I feel bad for people in relationships,” you replied eventually. “Like why would you willingly put yourself through that torture?”
You expected him to laugh like usual, but he stiffened.
“Is being in a relationship that repulsive to you?” he asked genuinely.
You nodded in response.
“Fuck relationships,” you said curtly, watching the girl on the screen start breaking down into tears. Taehyung only shrugged.
“I don’t know. I’d like to be in a long-term relationship eventually, even if it hurts in the end.”
You nodded in understanding, but you didn’t quite have the same philosophy.
“Monogamy is weird to me,” you said half-joking. “Maybe when I’m 60 and the possibility of having kids is out of the question.”
Taehyung laughed this time, dropping his phone on his lap on accident. He turned towards you and kissed the top of your head.
“Well, you’d still be hot by then,” he teased. You punched him lightly on the thigh.
You two sat there, enjoying each other’s company silently when another notification rang from his phone. He picked it up, and to your surprise, he answered almost immediately. Taehyung shut his phone off, but before he did, you caught sight of the Caller ID.
Hana.
You wanted to ask what she sent him, but you didn’t feel like it was your place. Instead, you looked up into his eyes and kissed him deeply. You didn’t know what led you to kiss him, if it was the jealousy or your insecurities, but you couldn’t bother to pinpoint the reason as his hand traveled underneath your shirt. He gently grasped your waist and laid you down softly. There was a bed right next to you two, yet you chose to stay on the floor. As his hand traveled lower and lower, you couldn’t help but get lost in the enigma that was Kim Taehyung.
You rolled around your bed, trying to find a comfortable position to fall asleep in, but nothing felt right. Hana was at her desk, doing God knows what at 2 a.m. in the morning, and kept the lights on.
“Can you turn off the lights, Hana?” you whined lethargically. “I can’t sleep.”
Hana nodded back in response, but you couldn’t see her.
“Yeah, let me just finish this up.”
You sighed and attempted to cover your head with a pillow. You just wanted to dream for goodness sake. You heard her smack something on the desk and she stood up rapidly. You sat up to see what was going on and was met with Hana’s elated expression.
“It’s done!”
She held up her little project to you and you squinted to get a better look. It was a small poster-board with big red lettering. It said, “Kim Taehyung, will you be my boyfriend?”
You wanted to cringe at the sight of the bright words. It felt very high school but it was very Hana of her. Your guilty conscience ate you up once again at the sight of her sparkling face. You didn’t have the heart to tell her your real thoughts.
“I know you probably think this is childish,” she muttered, blushing. “But Tae said he never got asked out with a poster back in high school so I thought it was a cute idea! I should stand out from the other girls with this, right?”
The way she asked so innocently made you want to cry right then. She had looked so excited, so full of life and love to give Taehyung something that seemed meaningless to you. She even called him ‘Tae’ in that soft voice of hers. You used to go on and on about how Taehyung didn’t deserve Hana, but you were starting to think you were the one that didn’t deserve him. You’d never even think to have come up with something like that or anything romantic for that matter.
“Is it too cheesy?” Hana asked shyly, looking for some comforting words. She was starting to feel nervous with how silent you were being.
You could only give her a brief smile and a nod.  It was her first relationship after all, there was no need to discourage her.
“It’s the right amount of cheesy for a guy like Taehyung,” you replied halfheartedly, which went undetected by Hana.
She looked relieved as she set it back down on her table.
“Thank God. I just hope he says yes,” she said, finally closing the lights.
More than ever, you felt awake. Your eyes had adjusted to the darkness, but your heart rate did not slow down at all. It felt like you needed to take a sprint outside to get this feeling of apprehension out of your system. Your palms clammed up and your throat felt constricted.
You couldn’t do this to her anymore, you couldn’t watch a girl so clearly in love with Taehyung be brushed aside for someone like you, whose feelings weren’t even clear to begin with. You heaved out a deep sigh as you collapsed your head back on to the pillow. Desperately, you were searching for a way out of the situation you dug yourself in.
You’ve definitely regretted sleeping with some men in the past, you just didn’t think Taehyung would be one of them.
It should’ve been way easier breaking things off with him, but Taehyung purposely made it difficult. Each time you’d bring up Hana’s name in conversation, he’d shut your mouth with his lips. He started to initiate sex more frequently and it felt like he wasn’t even trying to hide you as a lover from his friends anymore. You had confronted him about red heels girl knowing about your secret relationship and only shrugged in response.
“She asked me why I haven’t been texting her so I just told her I was always with you,” he replied back nonchalantly. Needless to say, you did not sleep with him that night.
Nothing seemed like it was going according to plan and your feelings only got more confusing as the days passed. Taehyung had started buying you meals whenever you came over and even set a blurry photo of you as his lock-screen. What was up with him really?
Hana had still yet to confess her feelings, so you were glad that you had some time until you could cleanly cut yourself out of Taehyung’s life.
Today would be the day, you insisted, but the way he stared down at your lying figure, biting his lip, your mind went blank from any thoughts. You couldn’t even form coherent words as he buries his face onto your chest; he was just too good at this for your own sanity.
“C’mon you can’t be done already, huh?” Taehyung softly whispered into your ear, playing with the ends of your hair as you recollected yourself from another round. You groaned.
“Tae really. We need to talk,” you tried to sound serious and ultimately failing as he planted soft kisses on your neck and collarbone.
“What’s up with that?” he teased. “You sound like a concerned girlfriend.”
You rolled your eyes at him. He always made weird jokes like that. He’d say questioning shit like ‘girlfriend’, ‘wife’, and ‘honey’ so often that you had tuned it out after a while. The words somewhat held more meaning now, though, since you were planning to end your friends with benefits relationship that day.
“Well, actually I am concerned about something,” you said, pushing him off of your body to lay next to you instead. You sat up straight. He propped his head under his hand and looked up at you intently. You swore you saw stars in his eyes. God, how did he manage to still look so irresistible?
“What’s up with you and Hana?” you asked, directly making eye contact with him. His face had turned sour quite quickly but then changed to that of satisfaction. He adjusted his position a bit so that he was closer to you.
“Why? You jealous?”
You scoffed.
“No, dumbass,” you said, punching his shoulder lightly. “I’m worried about her. Not you. You’re like, her first love.”
He left out a soft sigh and rubbed one of his eyebrows with the back of his palm. Taehyung always did that when he was put under stressful situations.
“Okay and?”
You rolled your eyes. Truly, he was trash.
“Do you not remember your first love, jackass?” you said, searching for your bra at the side of his bed while still maintaining eye contact. “She deserves way more than what you’re giving her right now.”
Taehyung shook his head and pulled you towards him, stopping your search for your underwear. Your back was against his chest and his lips directly on your neck. You felt his breathing on the enclave of your shoulder.
“So who’s the unlucky girl that deserves me then?” he whispered onto your skin.
You shuttered, feeling slightly ticklish. You couldn’t believe he was flirting with you even in a situation like this. If it was any other night, you’d have swooned and let him take you once again, but it was nearing 4 a.m. and the guilt was engraved deeply in the back of your mind. You did the one thing that could separate him from you momentarily and elbowed his stomach, sitting up again.
“It’s not me either, dick,” you chuckled at the way he clenched his core in pain. “If you want to keep seeing her, I need to cut ties with you. I might have done some messed up shit behind people’s backs in the past, but she’s a good friend. I can’t keep hurting Hana like this without her even knowing it.”
Well, it was easier getting those words out of your mouth than expected.
You didn’t bother to look at Taehyung’s face as you stood up from the bed, finally finding your bra on the other side of the room. You’d definitely miss Taehyung’s king-sized mattress and the expensive ass wine you’d drink together, but it had to be done. For the first time in your life, you were walking away from a situation that could get you into trouble.
You could feel his eyes on you as you searched for the rest of your clothes, managing to get fully dressed in a matter of minutes. He had put on his boxers and sat on the edge of his bed, eyeing your every move.
“Hey, I know you might miss me,” you teased, pinching his cheek lightly. “But, I don’t want to get caught up in any more drama, alright? Hana’s a good girl, maybe you could finally settle down-”
He cut you off, grabbing your wrist and pulling your face towards him. Maybe your heart had skipped a beat for a second there, but that giddy feeling was soon replaced with annoyance at his next words.
“And you? Are you gonna settle down?” he asked with a growl that he only ever brought out on... rough nights. You couldn’t help but laugh at how seriously he was taking this. Maybe he wasn’t lying when he said that you were his favorite fuck buddy.
“Unlike you, I haven’t met a Hana to tie me down just quite yet,” you said, releasing yourself from his grip. “No Prince Charming has ever swept me off my feet.”
You said it with a wink, but those words didn’t sit well with Taehyung. Who exactly was he to you?
“I’ll just stop meeting Hana then,” Taehyung shrugged. “We don’t need to end what we have going on just because of another girl. I could cut her off easily.”
You stared at him for a bit as you combed through your hair and then busted out in laughter. Taehyung furrowed his eyebrows at your reaction.
“Tae, no offense, but you actually can’t do better than Hana,” you shook your head, still laughing at his words. “Do you know how hard it is to come by a girl like her? Like, she’s so good for you. Hana could actually change you, you know that?”
It seemed pathetic that you were hyping up Hana so much and you could tell Taehyung was starting to get annoyed by it to, but you couldn’t help it. Hana was really better than you in so many aspects. Who were you to try and monopolize Taehyung all to yourself? Who were you to discourage her from pursuing a relationship with him? The right thing to do was to give her a fair shot with her first love.
You walked towards the pair of heels you had left near the bedroom door and slipped them on carefully.
“I could change for you too, [Y/N],” he murmured softly. “If you just ask, I would.”
You blinked at his words but continued to put on your heels. Was he drunk? You just came over after some light studying, you were sure he wasn’t intoxicated. No matter how hard you tried to ignore the rapid beating of your heart, you couldn’t get rid of the guilt that sat in the back of your throat.
“Tae, you and I both know we can’t change each other,” you said finally managing to get your heels on after grabbing the wall. “We’ve been doing this for months and we still manage to find time to fuck other people when we have the chance. Does that sound healthy to you?”
You tried to ease the tension of the conversation, but Taehyung was making it extremely difficult to switch the atmosphere into something more positive. He was angry with you, you could tell by the way he clenched his fists together and looked down at his feet. What did you even do to elicit a reaction this severe?
“Tae? What’s wrong?”
All he did was shake his head in response, not looking into your eyes. You sat next to him, putting a comforting hand onto his lap.
“Tell me. I’m all ears,” you said soothingly.
He heaved in a deep sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Would you hate me if I said that I’d stop fucking other people if I just had you?” he asked slowly, trying to gauge your reaction without directly making eye contact. You were still for a second and finally, some things had started to click in your head. Your palms started sweating.
Finally understanding his words, you pulled your hand away from Taehyung’s lap and scoot a bit farther away from him.
“Tae, I wouldn’t be able to do the same for you,” you said straightforwardly. It was best to be honest in situations like this.
He shook his head and finally lifted his eyes, but he looked in front of him instead of at you.
“And what if I told you I was okay with that?” he gulped.
You sat their stunned, not really knowing what to say in response. Truthfully, you were frightened about the implications of his words. What would this mean for you two? For this no strings attached relationship? It all just felt too overwhelming at that moment.
You stood up, grabbing your purse from the floor, and was about to head to the door until he stopped you by the wrist again. He dragged you back to stand in front of the bed where he sat.
“I don’t want Hana, [Y/N],” he said, tears forming in his eyes. “I want you. Only you."
Your heart raced at his words and turned around to face him. As you stood there, staring down at him, you realized how weak he really seemed at that moment. It hurt you to see him like this, but then again, you  should have expected this reaction. He had gotten clingier with you the past few weeks and you were an idiot for not realizing earlier.
Sometimes it was obvious that Taehyung was the more sensitive one out of the two of you, that he was a bit more skeptical of his lifestyle choices. There were times when you’d seen him genuinely heartbroken after getting slapped by girls he’d broken things off with and how he’d send apology texts to the ones he hurt the most. You weren’t like that- more of the type to ghost, the type to block. You couldn’t make an exception for Taehyung, not when Hana was at the dorm preparing her confession of love to him any day now.
“Please stay,” Taehyung croaked, burrying his head onto your long sleeve.
“I can’t Tae,” you said, softly pushing his hand away. “You know I’m not that kind of person.”
Taehyung had started tearing up, his lips forming a scowl. It was the first time you’d ever seen him show such sorrowful emotions. You smiled sadly at him. It felt like you were murdering someone with the way the guilt had completely overtaken your whole body. Staying with him would break Hana’s heart, but leaving him would break Taehyung’s.
In the end, you lose either way.
You grabbed a handkerchief from your purse and dabbed the tears away from his eyes.
“I can’t hurt Hana anymore,” you replied. “And I don’t want to hurt you anymore either. I’m sorry.”
He had started to sob and you handed the piece of cloth to him so he could wipe the tears off himself. You prayed that you wouldn’t regret letting him go, but knowing you, you probably would.
“It was fun being with you,” you said, carefully, not wanting to push any more buttons. “And maybe if I was a different person we could be something more, but...”
You couldn’t really find the energy to finish your sentence as you watched him cry into the handkerchief. Your heart was hurting so, so much. You wanted to take him into your arms, tell him that none of it was his fault and that you’d do anything just to see his twinkly eyes and bright smile once again. But you were reminded once again of that beautiful expression Hana had when she finished her poster-board for Taehyung, how they looked cruising through campus on their bikes with matching helmets. They’d make a great couple, you thought to yourself. Hana had the emotional availability that Taehyung craved for. This was the right thing to do, you thought.
“Let’s stop seeing each other,” you said with a conviction that only a person who was used to saying those words could muster confidently.
He looked up at you with disdain, scrunching his face in pain. He had never had his heart torn quite like this before. Taehyung wondered then if this was how all the other girls felt when he’d leave them. He realized, at that moment, that he might have deserved having his heart broken.
“Please stay,” he said again, his words distorted from the crying.
You shook your head and turned the door knob.
“I can’t,” you replied, tears threatening to spill over as you exited the room.
You left his dorm at 4 a.m., successfully evading campus security once again. When you walked towards your own dorm building, you couldn’t help but cry your eyes out. No other break up with the guys in your past had hurt quite like this one, even if you two were just fuck buddies. You didn’t even care about the worried glances people gave you as you passed by, you just wanted to drown in in your sorrows.
You opened the door to your room and Hana was there, reading a book. You composed yourself rather quickly, wiping away your tears before she could notice. Your cheeks were still noticeably puffy, though.
“Where were you?” she asked, taking her eyes off the page she was on to look at the wall clock in the room. “It’s so late, dummy. I stayed up to make sure you were okay since you weren’t answering my calls.”
You gave a fake chuckle.
“You know me,” you teased lightly, with a smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes. “Another weekend means a new guy.”
She groaned in response.
“I literally can’t wait until you settle down and be all whipped for someone,” she sighed, turning a page on her book. “That way I can actually make fun of you.”
You choked back a cry and took off your heels, collapsing onto your bed.
“I doubt that’ll happen,” you whispered, before drifting off into sleep.
When had it become so easy for you to lie?
A/N: This was so much fun to write!! I really wanted a realistic depiction of a friends with benefits au so I hope this turned out okay. Let me know if yall want a part two!! Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben had move into his new shared flat a little over three months ago. Things were going good, even great. The flat wasn’t too far from the center, the rent was correct and his roommates where really nice. There was Joe, born and raised here, in New York City, he was such a cool guy, hilarious and mostly in a happy mood. And there was (Y/N). She was a bit shy but once she was comfortable with people, she was very friendly. And she was pretty. Maybe too pretty because since day one Ben found himself having a crush on her. And it was getting bigger every day.
But the thing was, (Y/N) and Joe were close, like really close. She spent a lot of evenings with Joe, both of them messing on the sofa during whatever was on the TV. The blond was invited every time but he couldn’t help but felt left aside. Like he was intruding between his two roommates. They also had lunches together when they were both on break during work. Or the private jokes, probably what Ben hated the most. Ben wasn’t sure if Joe was flirting or just being nice. It was hard to say with him, always joking and being serious wasn’t his thing, so it was quite confusing. (Y/N) was as equally confusing. She was timid and blushing easily, so Ben couldn’t tell if she was into Joe or just being herself.
"Joseph ! Hurry up we’re going to be late !" Ben swallowed nervously at the sight of (Y/N), all dolled up and bouncing on her feet, seeming in a very good mood. "Sure you don’t want to come Benjamin ?" She looked at him with her sweet smile, her fingers putting her hairs in a plate.
"I have other plan but thanks" Ben said, a stupid smile on his lips, like every time he was speaking to her. She was very charming.
"Ordering a pizza and play Fifa all evening it’s not a plan Jones" Joe exclaimed when he entered the living room, he was well dressed too, straightening his white shirt casually.
Ben’s ears reddened at his words as (Y/N) giggled softly, giving him an amused glance. His heart melting at the happiness sparkling in her eyes, it was pretty rare to see her so care-free and simply joyful. School was kicking her ass, making her anxious and overwhelmed with so much work, it wasn’t easy everyday and you could see that on her face. She also had some family problems that was weighing on her but she wasn’t one to complain, preferring keeping quiet about whatever was bothering her.
"Should we go mister Mazzello ? Or should I call Mister Director now ?" She teased with a goofy grin, matching Joe’s one.
"Sir, it’s good too" Joe joked back and Ben took a big sip of his beer, watching his two roommates giggling at each other, his stomach twisting with jealousy.
"Dork" (Y/N) slapped playfully his shoulder. "I’m really proud of you Joe, you really deserve this promotion" The pride and happiness for her friend was dripping from her sweet tone and, once again, Ben felt sick.
"Thanks bub" He winked at her and dropped a soft kiss on her hairs and her smile was now reaching ear from ear. "Ready ?" (Y/N) nodded eagerly and slid her arm on Joe’s, her bag hanging on her other shoulder. "See you later Benny"
"Bye" He replied with a forced smile, his heart beating roughly against his rib cage, painfully aware that the girl he liked was probably already taken.
**
Weeks went by and Ben weren’t feeling better, it was ridiculous because his little crush was now something more, he was dangerous falling for his roommate and nothing could stop that.
"Ben ! Careful, you’re putting dough everywhere !" Ben blinked furiously, stopping his pure contemplation of (Y/N), to see that, effectively, he was throwing dough on the counter with his distract movements. "Give me that Benny" She giggled, taking from his hand the bowl and poured the dough into the dinosaur shape.
They were making a cake for Joe’s birthday and the man had a strange fascination for dinosaurs, they opted for the diplodocus shape, (Y/N) claimed it was the cutest of all.
"You’re so easily distracted, Ben" She added and gave him an amused grin behind her shoulder, making Ben’s heart fluttered. She was too damn pretty for his well-being. "What were you thinking about this time ?"
The blond chewed his lower lip and debated between telling her the truth or lying like every time. He opted for the third option, which weren’t really a lie but not the complete truth either.
"A girl"
"A girl ?" (Y/N) frowned her brows and slid the dough into the oven, before licking the remaining of the sweet dough from her fingers. Ben had to repress a moan at the sight. "I didn’t know you were seeing someone Benny"
"I’m not seeing her. Not really. We...are friends but I hope we could be something more one day" He said and stared intensely in her gaze, trying to make her understand who was this girl.
Of course she didn’t get the hint, he never even flirted with her, she couldn’t have a clue he was into her. Before she could replied, Joe entered the flat and all her attention ended up on the red hair, making Ben sighed deeply.
**
This was probably the worst Christmas on Ben’s life. He was maybe being a bit dramatic but seeing photos of (Y/N) and Joe all across his Instagram was killing him. Ben went to his family for the holiday and (Y/N) went with Joe, spending two all weekday together, having apparently the time of their lives.
And Ben was only thinking about her. How much he was in love with her now and how painful it was to live with the both of them. He was seriously considering to move in another flat, hoping it would calm his feelings until they disappeared in ashes.
Before opting for the most extreme solution, he wanted to ask Joe to confirm his relationship with (Y/N). But he was scared. Scared to ruin everything. Joe would immediately picked up that Ben had feelings for (Y/N) and if they were really together, it would be horribly awkward. Maybe he would be mad. And Joe was a dear friend to Ben, perhaps he should keep his mouth shut.
But when few days after coming back from holidays, he saw (Y/N) exited Joe’s room early in the morning, he felt his heart dropped. Crushing completely in tiny pieces. He was back from the gym and he stayed quiet, watching the girl he loved going back in her room, probably after fucking with Joe. For a split second he hated the red hair, jealousy burning his face but it quickly went away, knowing it was completely childish. Instead he was just sad. Deeply. He wiped the only tear which managed to escape his glossy eyes and went back to his room, decided to move out for good.
**
"Come on, Ben. Tell me what’s wrong ?" Joe was sitting on the blond’s bed, watching him packed his things. "(Y/N) already visited the new place you are going before moving here and she almost fainted when she saw a family of rats leaving in what was supposed to be her room. Why are you so eager to leave us ?"
"It’s not that bad and I told you, it’s closer to my work, mate. Doesn’t mean we can’t hang out together anymore" Ben gave him a tired smile, hoping the red hair would just drop it. The new place he was supposed to move in few days was horrible, a real shit hole but that was the only flat he could afford to stay in the center. And staying here, watching (Y/N) and Joe making doe-eyes to each other wasn’t a plan. He couldn’t stay here anymore, it was crushing him.
Joe sighed deeply and grabbed the box from Ben’s hands, putting it on the floor.
"Come on, the truth Jones, I’m not stupid, you’re lying. What is going on ? I thought you like our flat ? And we are nice roommates, so I don’t understand. And (Y/N) is going to kill you if she now you are moving out. She really likes you" Ben rolled his eyes, (Y/N) liked him, awesome but that wasn’t the problem.
"It’s just...alright, promise you won’t be mad at me ?" Joe raised a brow but promised anyway, surprised to see Ben ready to speak. The blond took a deep breath and decided he had nothing to lose anymore. "I’m in love with (Y/N)"
He swallowed nervously and watched Joe’s eyes widened at his words.
"You’re in love with her ?" He repeated with a high-pitched voice.
"But I know she is yours man, no worry, I didn’t try anything" Ben quickly added, anxious to see his friend kicking his ass.
"She is mine ? What do you mean ?" Joe scratched his beard as he processed slowly the informations.
"You’re together right ?" Joe stayed silent, his brows deeply frowned. "I saw her walking out of your room the other day, in the early morning. And you took her with you for holidays with your family so...yeah, you weren’t very discrete" Ben explained with a sad smile, folding a pants in the clothes box to avoid his roommate’s gaze.
"Oh. No, no, no" The red hair chuckled and shook his head. "We are not together, not at all!"
Ben grimaced. Right, even better, they were sex friend and strangely it was even worse for him.
"We are not sleeping together either Benjamin. Never" Joe added, seeing what Ben was thinking on his face. "We are just friend, close ones but that’s all we are. I swear"
The blond felt a weight lifted from his shoulders and he let the cloth fell on the ground with a low thud, feeling deeply relieved. They weren’t together.
"But...you...she is always glued to you, going with you everywhere and...I think she have feelings for you" Ben was confused now, the way they acted together...one of them must had feeling for the other. (Y/N) had probably.
"No she don’t, trust me, she don’t" Joe replied with a little smile. "I know what it look like but none of us have feelings other than friendly ones. (Y/N)...she is new to the city okay ? She don’t know anyone except her roommates, and before you arrived it was only me and her. That why we are so close, she is fucking lonely and she hates that. And did you see how timid she is ? It’s hard for her to meet new peoples, she missed a lot her friends from home and sometimes it’s just too much to handle" Joe confessed with a sigh, remembering how many time he comforted the poor girl.
Ben stayed silent for a good minute, his heart beating loudly in his chest.
"But why she never came to me then ? We’re friends too but she always go to you" The blond murmured, feeling envious that (Y/N) felt comfortable enough to go Joe but not him.
"I’m not supposed to tell you" The red hair mumbled, biting his nails as he thought intensely. "Most of the time you saw us cuddling or being close, you didn’t see what happened before. You didn’t hear how hard (Y/N) cried against my shoulder because school was breaking her. Or how miserable she is every time she speaks on the phone with her parents. The other day when she was out of my room ? She just had an anxiety attack because the day before she lost her part time job and was freaking out about paying rent. She...have some depressing moments and she don’t like to seems weak so she tried to keep it for her but sometimes it’s just too much"
Ben’s throat was tight with sadness and remorse. He was so preoccupied with his feelings that he didn’t even notice how his friend was not doing good. She was probably a better actress than himself.
"And no Ben, you couldn’t have guess. She made sure you didn’t pick up on her distress, she would rather come to me because I’m her friend and she don’t care if I saw her crying and wiping her nose on my top. Trust me, the romance is completely dead during these moments" He added with a little laugh.
"So she doesn’t see me as her friend ?" He replied with a bitter tone, even being friends with her he didn’t make it.
"Not really. She saw in you more than a simple friend Ben" The blond arched a brow, not sure what his roommate was trying to say. "For god’ sake Ben ! She likes you, alright ? And she would never cry in front of you, precisely for that reason ! She don’t want you to be embarrassed and make you run away. She really likes you, man"
Ben’s mouth was agape, his mind too clouded to form a coherent sentence. He felt a wave of relief and excitement rolled on him. She liked him. (Y/N), the beautiful (Y/N) had feelings for him too.
"She likes me ?" Ben repeated with a giant smile, nervous laughs leaving his lips.
"Yes, she does mate !" Joe joined his laughs, happy to see his friend so excited by the new. "Ask her out when she comes home, you will see, she waiting for you to make a move for months now"
"But...she could have too ! How could I guess she likes me ?"
"Benny, come on. She is freaking shy and you are mister sociable, you could have a full conversation with a fucking dinner table" The blond giggled and shook his head, not fully believing what was going on. "Trust me, she’s gonna say yes. She don’t have enough confidence to ask you out first"
And that exactly at this moment that (Y/N) echoed into the flat, greeting happily her roommates.
Ben exchanged a glance with Joe who shooed him away in her direction. The blond practically ran to the living-room, smiling like a mad man at the sight of (Y/N). Joe followed close behind, watching the interaction with a fond smile.
"Hi" Ben let out as he came next to (Y/N), his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Hi there Benny" She replied and blushed a bit at his intense staring. "You’re okay ?"
"More than okay" He smiled and cleared his throat. "In fact, I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me tonight ?" He blurbed out and Joe swallows back a snort, amused by his nervousness.
(Y/N) turned into a blushing mess, batting her eyelashes furiously as she was processing his words. She noticed Joe’s thumbs up behind Ben, in the corner of the room and she nodded eagerly, a timid smile curling on her lips.
"I would love too Benjamin"

@soukokuweek day one: “trial and error”

Tumblr media

The only thing that kept Chuuya from launching his phone full-force against the nearest wall was the fact that he was a reasonable person who could control his temper when dealing with shithead Dazai and all of his stupid ass shit. Definitely not because he did that exact thing last week and had to make a very embarrassing trip to the service provider with the barely-recognizable smashed remains of an iPhone X that probably deserved better. He refused to go back for at least the next month or they were going to start worrying about him and his tendency to go through thousand dollar phones every couple of months at best.
There was still a pressing matter at hand: Kouyou’s birthday party. He had already requested leave for the rest of the day starting at noon but that didn’t do anything to mitigate the issue of Dazai most definitely showing up just to ruin it, and Kouyou deserved better. In the past year or so he had installed seven more deadbolts on his apartment door and started locking them at random in the vain hopes that it might deter Dazai from just breaking in whenever the hell he felt like it, but Dazai’s lockpicking abilities were second to none in the worst way. He could put up with having his furniture moved two inches to the left but he drew the line at crashing Kouyou’s birthday party.
He tapped his foot quickly on the ground, arms crossed over his chest. There had to be some way to keep Dazai from showing up uninvited and eating all the crab. It was rude to keep excusing himself from the festivities to re-lock the door every couple of minutes, not to mention how fucking annoying that would be. Sometimes it felt like Dazai hadn’t really outgrown all of his 16-year-old mischief.
Regrettably, though, Chuuya was far too mature these days to match all of Dazai’s nonsense blow-for-blow, and he was fresh out of teenagers to ask for tips and tricks. Maybe he could hire one for the night—
He smacked himself in the forehead. The answer was staring him in the face the whole time.
Fishing his phone out of his pocket, he opened his contact list and pressed ‘call’ on Mori’s contact info, not even bothering to hide the mania of the grin cracking across his face as it rang. Gin only raised an eyebrow at him before going back to sharpening her knife with extreme prejudice, because Gin only knew how to do things with extreme prejudice and Chuuya appreciated such an honest and straightforward approach to life.
Finally, Mori answered the phone. “Hello, Chuuya-kun. Did you need something?”
“Apologies for bothering you, Boss,” he replied, bowing slightly even though Mori couldn’t see it. “I have a, uh… peculiar request to make of you pertaining to the festivities tonight.”
“Oh? I’m intrigued.”
Chuuya shifted the phone from one ear to the other so he could grab his wallet out of his pocket and rifle through the bills in the fold. “In the interests of keeping unscrupulous characters from disturbing said festivities, I was wondering if it would be okay for me to borrow a certain asset for the night.”
Mori chuckled, amused. “They’ve been in a bit of a mood lately, you know. Are you sure you can handle that?”
“I’m sure.”
“Alright, then. I leave them in your capable hands.” And with that, Mori hung up, leaving Chuuya with a rising giddiness under his skin that thrummed warmly. Kouyou was going to have a fantastic birthday party because he was finally, finally going to be able to outsmart Dazai after ten years of knowing each other and a lot of mortifying losses taken.
Everything was going perfectly.
***
Q removed one earbud from their ear and looked Chuuya up and down from where they were perched on their bed. “I don’t want to, though.”
So things maybe weren’t going perfectly, but Chuuya wasn’t going to admit defeat to a fucking teenager. He ground his teeth together tightly and counted backwards from ten in Japanese, then French, then Russian, Italian, Spanish, and eventually English before he felt like he could open his mouth without screaming obscenities. “You will notice that it wasn’t a request and I specifically phrased it as such to avoid confusion, Kyuusaku.”
They rolled their eyes and a vein started throbbing in Chuuya’s forehead. After the heavy traumatization they received during the entire Guild bullshit three years prior it had been decided that maybe locking them up like an animal wasn’t exactly welcoming to the development of a healthy mental state, so Chuuya and Kouyou both lobbied for at least humane treatment. They were given their own room and the periodic ability to head out into the dregs of normal society, provided they behaved and were accompanied by several mafiosi.
Unfortunately, this also meant that they had the chance to develop a personality, and mixed in with the dangerous cocktail of hormones running through their pubescent veins, it meant they were kind of a snarky shithead. God, he hated dealing with teenagers.
“What do I even get out of this?” Q asked, reclining back onto their elbows and crossing their legs at their ankles. “It sounds boring with no payoff. No thanks! I’ll just read manga here instead.”
More than he hated dealing with teenagers, he hated dealing with mouthy teenagers with zero work ethic, and—holy fuck, 16-year-old Q was just a repackaged version of Dazai at 15. Chuuya wanted to scream.
“Look,” Chuuya said, trying to level with Q as best as he knew how. “I’ll give you $500 and a PS Vita with three games of your choice if you just sit by the front door and flip locks all night. A monkey could do this.”
“Then hire a monkey to do it.”
“I’m trying.”
Q frowned. “I said it sounds boring and I don’t want to do it. It’s not worth the effort.”
“I’ll give you an extra $100 for every time Dazai gets frustrated and swears.”
They sat up straight, pulling their legs in to sit cross-legged on the bed. “I guess… it doesn’t sound that bad when you put it like that.” Q tapped a finger on their chin thoughtfully, humming a long tone that only got longer the more Chuuya’s foot started involuntarily tapping out of irritation. “Okay, fine. I’ll do it. But I want one of the new Vita models. None of the crappy older ones. And let me use your Amazon Prime account to order figures.”
Chuuya sighed. “Deal.”
***
Dazai whistled a happy little tune to himself as he walked by the doorman and the person manning the front desk of Chuuya’s apartment building, waving at them. They waved back. All was right in the world.
The elevator ride was the longest part of the job every single time he came here, and he was running fashionably late to his already fashionably late lockpicking session. His lockpick set bounced against his leg in his jacket pocket as he shifted from side to side to stretch out his back for the crouching hell he was about to endure. Soon enough, the elevator slowed to a stop, dinged, and the doors opened.
Chuuya’s apartment was more than one apartment. The hat rack decided years ago that one apartment wasn’t enough for him, so he bought half a floor’s worth of apartments and had it remodeled into one massive living space, complete with multiple bedrooms for guests, an entertainment center, a full library, two different kitchens, more bathrooms than any person with one ass could ever need, and several other luxuries he definitely didn’t need. He liked to throw his fancy executive paycheck around as much as he could, and it was kind of cute.
He also refused to give Dazai a spare key to it, not that it ever stopped him. Eating all of his crackers and leaving crumbs on the couch was part of the experience of their relationship, after all.
The party was clearly a rager from what he could hear from behind the closed door. Surveying the eight deadbolts between him and Chuuya’s home cooking and absurdly expensive alcohol collection, he whipped out his lockpicking set and got to work.
The first bolt gave easily, and the next two weren’t locked. The third was, as was the fourth, but the fifth wasn’t set. The sixth and eighth were, the seventh not. It was easy enough to fiddle with the picks to get them open, and all in all it took less than ten minutes to get through all eight. He stood up, brushed himself off, and then grabbed the handle and turned it.
Or, well, he tried turning it. It didn’t budge.
He stared at his hand, still around the doorknob, and said, “What the fuck.”
***
Senbonzakura faded out and Fukagyaku Replace started up, but Q had their other ear trained on the door. Every time they heard a lock click out of place, they would either lock it back up or lock one of the ones that hadn’t been locked. It was mindless work, but at least they were going to get free food out of it once the party was over on top of the other agreed-upon spoils.
They heard Dazai swear again outside the door and added another tally to their list.
***
Three hours of hosting later, Kouyou was pleasantly tipsy and ready to go home. The consensus among the rest of the guests was much the same, and they all thanked Chuuya in turn as he escorted them to the door, undoing all the locks in one swift motion and letting them out. When the last of them had left, he stood in the threshold and looked down.
On the floor outside the apartment, Dazai sat with his knees to his chest and a pout on his face. It was equal parts hilarious and adorable. Chuuya kicked him with the toe of his house slipper. “Get up, asshole. There’s leftovers.”
“I think I’ll just sit out here until I die of starvation instead,” Dazai replied, the pout infecting even his voice. “Since you clearly don’t want me around. This is a pretty cruel method of torture, even for you.”
“In case you’ve forgotten, you were the torture specialist, Demon Prodigy,” Chuuya said back flatly, kicking Dazai again. “Stop pouting and get in here already and fucking eat something. I’ve gotta get Cinderella back before midnight.”
“I don’t want to now. McDonald’s wouldn’t treat me like this.”
Chuuya snorted, leaning back into the apartment to address Q from where they were still sitting on the stool they had been provided at the start of the party, one earbud in as they played Snake on the shitty Nokia flip phone Mori allowed them to have. “Honor system, but how much do I owe you for this one?”
Q pursed their lips and did some quick mental math. “Well, you said $100 every time he swore, so with the $500 you started with… $2000?”
“I’ll make it $3000 because he’s pouting like a goddamn child.” He pulled out his wallet and selected the appropriate amount of cash before handing it to Q. “Go ahead and grab some food before I take you back to headquarters. You’ve earned it.”
Almost immediately after the words came out of Chuuya’s mouth, Q vacated their seat with enviable speed and scurried over to the spread of leftovers on the dining room table, loading a plate up with everything they could see. With that problem out of the way, it was time to get his stupid manchild of an ex-partner to stop throwing a silent fit on the floor outside his apartment.
He put his hand on the top of Dazai’s hair and gave it an affectionate ruffle he would deny until his last breath. “I made crab. Just the way you like it.”
Dazai looked up at Chuuya, the angle accentuating the way his bottom lip was dramatically sticking out. He sniffed. “I guess if you make it up to me with a romantic dinner I can get over the pain you’ve caused my poor heart.”
“Yeah, yeah. Get in here, stupid.”
***
Q stuffed another bread roll into their mouth, glancing back and forth between Chuuya—his mouth so impressively turned down into a frown it was a wonder his lips hadn’t fallen off yet—and Dazai—currently holding his fork so tight it was threatening to bend in his hand—while chewing. They swallowed. “Are you guys gonna eat?”
“You know, Chuuya,” Dazai said, icicles forming on the words, “when I say ‘romantic dinner,’ it usually means just the two of us.”
“I don’t think they could pick up a hint if you dropped it right at their feet and literally fucking pointed at it, Dazai.”
They took another bite of the roll and chewed slower this time, more deliberately. They were pretty sure there was some kind of tension in the room over something, but knowing Dazai and Chuuya it could easily have been over just about anything under the sun. It wasn’t worth worrying about it, not when there was so much food ready to be eaten. And why would they eat in the living room when there was a perfectly good table begging to be dined on?
Chuuya put his face in his hands and sighed deeply. Dazai’s top lip twitched violently.
After about five minutes of that, Q swallowed, drank half a glass of water, and pointed at Dazai’s plate before saying, “Do you want that or not?”
The fork finally gave out.

This may or may not go up by the time midnight hits or slightly after for me, let’s see what happens! I’ve been working on this since 9:30 PM EST, I expect it’ll be done by 12:50 AM EST. Hopefully I’m right so it ain’t too late gjnhg
Tumblr media
For starters: Happy New Year everyone! Hard to believe we lived in the decade where this beauty was created. Nonetheless, there are multiple people I want to thank -- along with a much needed personal note from me. Everything will be put into a read more, but trust me, it’s long. Thank you all for making the final days of this decade very welcoming for me!
@kiidreamu & @theabyssalmuses
It’s rather silly for me to start with you two, because I’ve got quite a bit to say; so here goes! I’ve known you two for...quite a while huh? I can’t recall the exact time, but I know we’ve been mutuals since I went by Phantom -- which was a long while ago. Regardless, I’ve always enjoyed you two on my dash; and I’ve always really liked interacting with y’all OOC! I’ve always had a blast speaking with you two (specifically now w all this fuckin Bear Ass shit).  I really enjoy the way you two write your muses, I think you both should have a lot more faith in them because they’re very fun to see on the dash! It’s pretty clear y’all put a lot of effort into your writing, even if you say you don’t, I for sure notice it.  Hime, I know you said you admired me - but there’s nothing to admire! You and Kii are equally as good as me, but I’m definitely not much. However, I never posted it (because I had it in my drafts and still do) because it meant a lot to me. I’ve never been told something like that aside from Norgie, so it made me feel happy in a dark time.  Thank you both for continuing to be my friends, truly.
@fantasyacrossworlds
Awoo! You and I have known each other for a long time, too (most people tagged here I’ve known for 2 - 4 years hujhj)! I’m VERY happy that we’re mutuals again, I’ve truly missed interacting with you! I’m so glad that it seems Orion and Cass are going to have a chaotic friendship that will always end on Orion running to Artemis LMAO. I’m looking forward to more interactions!
@sanzenxsekai
I already gave you a super long post explaining how much me and Norgie are thankful for you, so I’ll remind you in a tl;dr version. WE ALL LOVE YOUR STINKY GREMLIN + YOU!! Please keep writing Nobu in 2020! Thank you so much for being such a good friend to me.
@mcphistcples
You don’t even realize how much of a positive impact you’ve had on both me and my girlfriend. You’re absolutely hilarious and I’m incredibly happy you chose to start interacting with a disaster like me. As a Dies fan, I fucking love your Rein. You write him fantastically and it’s always fun to see your interactions with BB’s JAlter.  I am looking forward to the dramatic reading of My Immortal: Bear Ass Edition : )
@stxrdust-pxper
We haven’t talked much OOC properly, but we’ve known each other just about the same time as me and Norgie have been dating - so almost 2 years! You’re a pretty cool person, I’m happy you joined my new server because it’s given myself and others a chance to chat with you more. Thank you for all the kindness you’ve given me throughout the time we’ve known each other, I’ve never said it until now, but it truly has stuck with me and helped me become happier.
@bloodsoakedsakura / @idoldragos
There’s actually a lot I’d like to say, some I’ll leave out for now. For starters, thank you for having my back for three years straight. Seriously. You’ve been there for me through a whole lot, honestly surprised you’ve stuck with me for as long as you have.  You’ve stood up for me when the time came for it and I’m honestly so thankful you did. Every time you hop in call with us it’s usually always fun and stupid (in a good way), so thank you for being part of my band of misfits as long as you have Sades. Even though you’re a boomer who didn’t stop me rolling 200 of my Quartz, I forgive you... dontkillmepls
@yuichiroswife
Speka, you’ve been a great help to me and Norgie a great amount of times as of late. Thank you so much, you’re an incredibly kind person and I’m glad we became friends!!
@muniificus
I’ve known you for 3 years too I’m 90% certain, it’s insane how long I’ve known a lot of you - it feels like forever but it also feels like time has gone by so quickly! Much like Sades, I’m very thankful you’ve stuck around for as long as you have Icarus. Thank you for putting up with my dumb ass, and ultimately having fun in return! alsoihavethereplyforanastasiadraftedipromise
@fakepriest
I’ve sent you an ask with a lot of what would’ve been said in here, but I want to let you know that I’m extremely grateful that you’ve kept being my friend to. I enjoy our conversations a lot, especially when we talk about things like Heaven’s Feel because they’re usually always such fun things to talk about.
Much like the ask I’ve sent you, your Kirei is so scarily accurate it nearly simulates his actual personality flawlessly. That’s how scary good at writing this tofu loving fake priest. I’m so happy it’s you who’s writing him, not to play the pedestal game, but I genuinely can’t see anyone else (not even myself) coming close to how phenomenal your portrayal is.  #kireisquad
@arkdiia
Though our first conversation first chatting again wasn’t expected, I’m super glad you came back to Tumblr and I’m thrilled to be friends w you again! Hopefully for 2020, you and I /both/ catch a break lmfao.
@saintguine
Much like Anna, I’ve already told you what I wanted to here in the form of an ask a few hours ago - however, I do wish to say smth that I’m sure a lot of people feel. Regardless of how you think about yourself, you’re a very good person BB and we’re all very blessed to know you. You’re absolutely one of my best friends, and though there was a point where we lost communication for a bit, I’m very grateful our friendship is the exact same.
We all care u BB, thank u for bein gud to all of us
Kayla & Sere
This post is incredibly long already, luckily I’m just about done -- but I’ve got three people to go starting with you two!
Sere, you’ve heard me vent a lot and you’ve known me (Kayla has known me this long too) for a pretty damn long time if you ask me, 3 years may not seem like a lot to people, but with all the stuff we’ve all gone through these 3 years? It’s been a LOT and I can’t say I’d be the person I am without you hearing my dumb ass vent and creating Cursed Night.  I appreciate all of your icons, thank you for giving us (Hell) special treatment with them. Seriously! While you are a best friend for sure, you’re also practically family to me. Thank you again for everything.
Kayla, the same of what I said for Sere is said for you. You’re legit like my older sister, you’ve been there for me for just bout the same amount that Norgie has; you’re someone who means a lot to both me and Norgie, so thank you for giving talking to us a chance way back when you were shy (I think that’s what it was!). There have been a lot of ups and downs for all of us, but I’m glad the downs at least had the positive effect of giving me a second family who I love dearly. I actually teared up on this part, so god help me when I write for Norgie.
@letoborn / @uwuwrote
I’m going to save a lot of what I want to say to you for our anniversary in June, but I will say a few things because I love you so very much.
When I met you, I was not expecting you’d turn out to be the woman of my dreams. You’re genuinely my better half, and I have never been as happy as I am than I am with you. You’ve truly had the biggest impact in my life Norgie, you’ve made me laugh, cheered me up when I’m sad, called me out when I was dumb and helped me better myself.
I’m so incredibly happy I got to spend the rest of the last decade being your boyfriend, and now, going into 2020 - a whole new decade with you. Like I said, you’re my better half - I can’t see myself with anyone else but you. You’re the greatest treasure in my life, I’m so happy we’ve had all this fun with roleplaying.
Thank you so much Norgie, for giving me Orion/Artemiis, all of our other ships - being my soulmate (at least, I think so). I hope 2020 treats us both well, but I’m willing to go through whatever as long as it’s with you.
Now, that’s the end of that -- but I have a few extra things to say.
My 2019 has been...quite possibly the hardest year of my life, at least on the internet. For a very long time, I was fearful of interacting with others - I made mistakes that I wish I could take back, I got put through hell for nothing...man, I don’t wanna go back in and say what happened, what is and isn’t true -- the long story short is, shit happened, but it’s the past now.
I want to go into 2020 just..as positive as I can be, I’m tired of the drama, I just want to have fun with my friends and my girlfriend you know? So, I’m finally choosing to move on and just...try having fun again. This choice would be impossible without the people mentioned in this post.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you who have stuck around through it all for me. I’m so incredibly thankful to be part of the friendgroup I’m in, to know everyone I’ve met who’s put up with me. I’ve had so many times where I wanted to leave this site, but I wanted to keep trying to write with everyone -- to have fun with everyone. You all have no idea how genuinely happy you’ve all made me, just by writing with my Orion and Norgie’s Artemis.
Though I couldn’t think of anything to say specifically for the others tagged below here, thank you all for everything as well -- just following me makes me happy. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some people, but trust me, I’m so very happy to know all of you.

That’s not why I’m going (28)
Be cool
Book: The Royal Romance
Pairing: Drake Walker x Amara Suarez
Rating: some foul language, some extremely suggestive, and a VERY steamy scene. This is absolutely NOT appropriate for people under 18.
Word count: 4,350 (let me know if the ‘keep reading’ cutoff isn’t working well!)
Notes: This picks up basically where we left off, during the last night in the cabin, starting with Amara’s POV. This chapter is a little slow, but it sets up several things that will be important for what will happen next!
*****
Amara had gone back to the kitchen for the umpteenth time to make more margaritas. And to think she’d made fun of Drake for buying so much booze.
Dinner had been amazing, Drake truly hadn’t lied about his grilling skills. Even Hana, who was always poised and polite, had asked for thirds, and downed one burger and two hot dogs. Olivia had begrudgingly agreed that the mushrooms and leeks on top of the burgers were a nice touch.
Armed with two pitchers of margarita and her pineapple and coconut cake on a tray, Amara made her triumphant entrance in the backyard. As everyone cheered for her to fill up their glasses, she caught herself worrying for their livers, but promptly remembered that, if everything goes to shit tomorrow at Penelope’s estate, this may be their last fun night, so cirrhosis be damned.
‘Amara! This cake is heavenly,’ Hana gasps.
‘Oh, honey, you don’t have to say that,’ Amara responds. ‘I’m not the best cook--’
‘Shut up, Suarez, and give me another slice,’ Olivia cut her off.
‘Guys,’ Max says, his mouth full of cake, ‘let’s continue, it was Liv’s turn to dig into the bowl.’
They had started a game of Truth or Truth, for which they had written deep questions for one another on little pieces of paper, and mixed them in a bowl. Olivia rolls her eyes but picks up a paper.
‘When was the last time you were in love,’ she reads.
‘Oh, that’s my question!’ Hana beams.
‘Kid, you know we all have to answer, right?’ Olivia says. ‘You included.’
Hana blushes. ‘Oh, I didn’t realize that.’
‘I’ll go!’ Max says enthusiastically. ‘Drake, you remember Gianni, right?’
Drake nods, ‘I fucking loved that guy. He was hilarious.’
‘Yeah,’ Max says wistfully. ‘I thought we were more serious than he did. He ended up going back to Italy and breaking my heart.’
‘Max, I’m sorry, that sucks,’ Amara says as she reaches to hug him.
‘Your turn, Suarez,’ Olivia interrupts.
Amara blushes. She feels like a schoolgirl playing Spin the bottle. Are they really gonna make her say it in front of everyone? ‘Guys… you know.’
‘Ooooooh,’ Max teases, ‘no we don’t!’
Amara throws her hands up. ‘Well, obviously it’s Drake. Last time I was in love is now, with Drake. Happy?’
Drake reaches for her cheek and brings her face to his. Their mouths crash together in a sweet, yet urgent kiss.
‘Same answer for me, bitches,’ Drake slurs. ‘My last time is also now, with Amara.’
She knows he’s drunk. When else has he called anyone ‘bitches’ as a term of endearment? But then again, she’s drunk too, and so blissfully happy that she couldn’t care any less.
‘Alright, you guys are fucking gross,’ Liv says, waving her hands at them as if to shoo them. ‘Lee, your turn.’
Hana blushes again, and takes a big sip of her margarita. ‘Damn, Amara, these drinks are good. Thank you for making them strong. Well, you guys remember the infamous photo, right?’ Everyone nods, and she continues. ‘I told some of you that this woman, Caroline, was kinda...the one who got away. We were together at Oxford. After graduating, I had to go back to China, or, to be more exact, I didn’t have the guts to stay in the UK and defy my parents. So, I broke up with her, said I wasn’t ready, right before our third anniversary. She had booked us a trip to New York as a surprise, which I found out after, through a mutual friend. In any case, I didn’t break up with her for lack of love. More like...for lack of courage.’
Max holds out his arms and Hana pulls him into a hug. ‘Hana, babe, there’s nothing harder than coming out to tough parents. You didn’t lack courage, it was simply not the right time!’
‘Exactly,’ Amara chimes in, ‘look at how brave you were in front of the whole court the other day. A fucking champ! Because now is your time.’
‘You think?’ Hana sniffles. ‘I mean, I basically didn’t have a choice…’
‘Yes you did,’ Amara continues. ‘You could have denied it, said that it was a fake picture, or said it was a joke among friends. But you took the high road, and we’re so proud of you.’
‘Ok, this game took a turn,’ Liv sighs. ‘I didn’t think it would end in a group hug.’
‘Well then,’ Max replies, ‘you go ahead, Liv, answer the question.’
Olivia quickly glances at Amara, who gives her an encouraging smile. For a split second, Amara thinks she’s gonna be truthful and open up about her feelings. But, after a brief pause, she says ‘Nope. No heart, remember? Icy Nevrakis bitch here. Nothing to see. Next!’
*****
‘Babe, we’ll clean up in the morning,’ Drake whispers in her ears, his arms draped around her waist as she does some dishes.
‘I want to help,’ she says, leaning into his embrace, ‘I know you have to get up early, to go to the grocery store and get ready for Liam and Bertrand coming over.’
He kisses her neck. ‘I don’t mind. I like it. Besides, you made all of the drinks all night long, which was by far the biggest job of all, given this crowd.’
She chuckles. The sound of her laugh makes his heart full. He hates to admit it, but the glowing heart imagery from Jane the Virgin is spot on.
She says, ‘I know you like entertaining, but I don’t mind doing a few dishes. It’s not even that late. Please, let me help.’
He takes a kitchen rag. ‘Alright, then I’m gonna do the drying. Team work, right?’
*****
Olivia turned on her phone for the first time for a few hours. After what happened with it, the mere thought of sending a text filled her with dread, but she had to check her email at least, in case something was needed from her at Lythikos.
She plops down on the bed, and unzips her dress while her phone turns on. It’s strange to be here, at the Walker cabin, but especially in Savannah’s room. Maxwell and Hana had called the Master bedroom, which had a king bed. They had rightfully assumed that Liv would rather cut off her own arm than share her bed with either of them. But still, in here, she feels like she is sharing it with Little Savannah Walker, whose spirit is all around.
She wonders if she had contributed, even minimally, to sending her away. She’d never been very nice to her, never welcoming. But then again, it’s not her job to hang out with the Kingsguard’s offspring. She had enough on her hands as a child, after all.
Her phone buzzes, pulling her out of her daydream.
I had a good time yesterday. I decided to come to Portavira after all, so I’ll see you tomorrow?
Rashad. Damn, she hates how her heart jumped like an idiot as she read his name on the screen. Why? It’s stupid. He’s just being nice.
She takes off her dress and gets into a tank top and shorts, before heading to the bathroom.
She’s not answering that text.
*****
‘Wow, you look hot,’ Drake whispers as he sees Amara come out of the bathroom in her new, emerald green nightie.
‘Oh, this old thing?’ she smirks. ‘Just kidding, it’s brand new. I got it at the lingerie store the other day with Hana.’
Drake pulls her into bed with him, and kisses her urgently. ‘How come I’ve never seen it?’
‘Well, Walker, as I recall, you didn’t exactly give me time to wear anything last night.’
He chuckles as he plants a trail of kisses from her lips down to her collarbone. ‘Heh. I guess you’re right. What can I say, I can’t resist you, Suarez.’
‘Mmmm, ditto. Don’t stop.’
He has no intention to stop. His mouth runs all over her chest, until he’s kissed every inch. He pays special attention to her nipples, which get harder and harder under his tongue. Soon enough, off comes the sexy nightie, to make more space for Drake to kiss her all over. On his way down, he kisses her stomach, until he reaches between her legs, where he’s been aching to go, all night long. Amara moans in anticipation as Drake pauses before putting his lips on her core. He teases her with his tongue, softly at first, then more deeply.
Her moans get louder and louder until she catches herself and remembers they are no longer alone in the house. Somehow, her muffled grunts turn him on even more. His only mission tonight is to make her come, and judging from her increasingly intense breathing, it becomes obvious that he’s on the right track.
As Amara orgasms, she lets out a barely muffled low groan, which Drake is pretty sure everyone in the house heard. But he doesn’t give a shit. Amara catches her breath, and whispers, ‘Wow, Walker...you got game.’
He smirks, ‘I fucking love taking care of you.’
She pulls him into a kiss, and he shivers as his hard cock touches her naked body. She reaches down and starts stroking it slowly, drawing groans from Drake. ‘Fuck me, Walker,’ she whispers in his ear.
*****
Amara opens her eyes, awakened by Drake’s soft kisses on her forehead. ‘H--hey,’ she mumbles.
‘Oh baby, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.’
She smiles and kisses him. ‘It’s ok. I need to take a shower and move my stuff anyways.’
Drake nods, stroking her hair. ‘Wanna join me in the shower?’
She acquiesces enthusiastically.
After showering, she stands in a towel in front of the mirror, brushing her rebellious curls and spraying rose water on her face. Drake gets into his jeans as quickly as he can and kisses her lips. ‘I’m gonna run to the supermarket to buy lunch before everyone else wakes up. I’ll see you later? I’ll bring croissants back for you guys, so don’t make anything, ok?’
‘You’re the best, thank you!’
He really is. Amara hopes that things don’t change too much from the bliss that she’s been feeling for the past two days, but she doubts her wish will come true. She already feels stressed out about Liam’s upcoming visit, and it’s not even an official courtly one. She’s already scanning the cabin in her head, to make sure nothing incriminating lies anywhere.
Once dressed in a casual outfit --light-wash skinny jeans and a yellow blouse--, Amara goes downstairs and puts the coffee pot on. Hana is already in the backyard, reading a novel.
‘Hi Amara!’ she waves.
‘Hey hun, I’m making coffee. Want some?’
‘Sure,’ Hana replies enthusiastically. ‘I saw Drake leave a while ago, he’ll be back with breakfast.’
Amara waits until the coffee has brewed and pours two cups, with a dash of milk.
‘Thanks,’ Hana says. ‘Did you pack? You should put your stuff in the master, we’ll say you slept with me, and Max on the couch.’
Amara nods. She loves that Hana has thought of everything. ‘Thank you. I was gonna ask if you mind lying a little…’
‘Of course not. We don’t want to raise suspicions, not now.’
Amara takes a big sip, pauses a bit, and says, ‘Hana, do you think we’re fooling ourselves? Liv is right, Liam will be furious however we announce it.’
Hana gives her a reassuring smile, and somehow, Amara already feels soothed. ‘Liv is hurting right now, she’s lost and she sees everything in a negative light. I think you and Drake are doing what you can. If the timing is right, if you wait until Liam has proposed to someone, and has moved on, you could always fudge the details and say you guys fell in love after the Decision Ball.’
‘You’re right. But...what if we don’t pull it off? What if someone rats us out before that?’
‘I understand the fear, believe me. Given everything that’s happened, it’s legitimate. But you can’t live in fear, honey. You’ve already lived the past two years punishing yourself for something you didn’t cause. You need to let yourself be happy.’
Amara swallows hard. She and Hana had many heart-to-hearts in the past few weeks, ever since she’d told her all about Sergio. Hana had been an excellent listener, and an even better hugger, but had never expressed any judgment or given her opinion on Amara’s past. This was the first time she had said something like that. ‘Funny,’ Amara smiles, ‘you’re not the only one who’s been telling me this, lately. My dad, Drake, Max, even Liv…’
Hana smirks, ‘Well maybe we’re all onto something. Obviously, you can’t announce your relationship to everyone right now. Liam and Drake’s friendship would not survive. But even in secret, for now, maybe you could find a way to stop feeling guilty. To stop fearing.’
‘Good Lord, woman,’ Amara whispers, ‘you’re so wise. It’s exhausting, really.’
Hana laughs heartily. ‘Oh well, I try, but I can only apply my wisdom to other people’s problems.’
Amara grabs her friend’s hand. ‘I’ve been thinking about what you said yesterday, about Caroline. You should reach out to her. Explain to her what you said to us, about timing, about being ready. Maybe she’ll understand. It’s worth a shot, right?’
Hana smiles wistfully. ‘It definitely is.’
‘Morning my little blossoms!’ Maxwell kisses Hana’s and Amara’s cheeks. ‘How did you sleep?’
‘Great,’ Amara says. ‘Help yourself to coffee, Max, there’s plenty. Has anyone seen Olivia?’
Max shakes his head, all the while pouring himself a cup, to which he adds about four spoonfuls of sugar. ‘No, not yet. Hope she’s alright.’
As if on cue, Olivia comes down the stairs, looking more relaxed than the day before. ‘Morning guys,’ she says softly.
‘Hey Liv, how did you sleep?’ Max asks.
‘I um…’ she scratches her head and grabs a cup of coffee. ‘I actually slept really well. I’m sure it was Suarez’s margaritas.’
‘Or it could be the peace and quiet,’ Amara chimes in.
‘Yeah yeah, nature is fucking adorable,’ Liv replies.
*****
All five of them are still sitting outside, enjoying their coffee and croissants, in the sun. Drake bought something easy for lunch, he will just have to assemble the salad, and grill the steaks at the last minute. They will have ice cream for dessert.
The croissants he brought back were a hit, although he wishes he had had more time to make them himself. On second thought, he is glad he spent that time in bed and in the shower with Amara instead.
There is a knock on the door, and when Drake looks at his watch, he sees that it’s only eleven. Could it be Liam already? ‘I’ll get it,’ he says before getting up.
‘Good morning, Drake,’ Bertrand says, an awkward smile on his face.
‘Hi Bertrand, welcome!’ Drake responds, opening his arms for a hug.
Bertrand, visibly taken aback by the gesture, hesitates before walking into Drake’s hug. ‘Thank you for having me. I hope I’m not too early, I just, um…’
‘No, not at all, come have a coffee with us, we’re outside.’
He walks in, and Drake notices that he is wearing a black shirt, and a vest with little embroidered horses on it. Drake has to fight a smile. Bertrand probably thought that coming to the countryside warranted a horse-themed outfit. Thankfully, he didn’t break out the riding boots, just some boat shoes.
‘Hello everyone,’ Bertrand says awkwardly. It occurs to Drake that he had never really been included in any of their private get-togethers, besides the Beaumont Bashes. Drake feels bad. Although he doesn’t know it yet, this man is the father of his nephew, they should be closer.
‘Hi Bertrand, good to see you!’ Amara says, as she gets up and gives him a hug.
‘Oh, um, hello, yes, um, good to see you too, Amara,’ he mumbles, patting her back like he’s trying to burp her.
‘Do you take milk or sugar?’ Hana asks.
‘Um, no, I take it black, thank you, Hana, you’re very kind.’ He takes the cup. ‘Before we sit down, I wanted to make sure that everything is in order. I mean um, Amara, did you think of removing all evidence that um… that you were staying…’ He rubs his neck, obviously unsure of how to say what he wants to say in an appropriate manner.
Amara sees his struggle and interrupts. ‘Yes, thank you for thinking of this, Bertrand. I removed my belongings from Drake’s room and transferred them to Hana’s. Also, I wanted to apologize. For keeping you in the dark.’
He waves her off. ‘Please. There was a clear conflict of interest. You couldn’t possibly tell me, when I was so eager to push you on Prince Liam. But um… for what it’s worth, I am happy for you both. Love is precious and should not be apologized for.’
Drake’s eyes widen. Did Bertrand just say something adorable? Well fuck. ‘Thanks, man, we appreciate it. We heard you had our backs yesterday, thank you for that too.’
‘Oh,’ Bertrand mumbles again, ‘it was nothing.’
*****
Liam looks at his watch. He’ll be right on time for lunch at Drake’s. He decided to drive himself, to clear his head. Bastien had begged him not to, but he needed to be alone on this drive. He needed to feel normal.
Nothing feels normal. His best friend is acting weird and distant --although he hopes that today’s lunch will reinstate things. Olivia is banging her bodyguard and refusing to talk to him. Amara, the woman he’d been dreaming of, has made it clear she does not want him. Madeleine keeps pushing and pushing.
He thinks back of their encounter, just this morning, in the gardens. He was taking a stroll, coffee in hand, before leaving for Portavira, and she was obviously looking for him. After they exchanged pleasantries, she squeezed his arm, and lingered for a little too long. Then, like clockwork, his father called him into his study and asked him to give Madeleine a chance. He can bet that Madeleine went crying to her aunt Regina as soon as Liam was dismissive of her. According to Constantine, she is the best contender and Liam has not even considered her.
His eyes on the road, his hands firmly on the steering wheel, Liam tries to clear his head. It feels good to drive himself. But really, he can’t relax, not properly anyways. All he can think of is how weak his father looked, this morning, in his study. So small in his chair. Liam wonders how much weight he’s lost. How much time he has left.
He can’t stop thinking about what his father told him. Consider the good of Cordonia. Don’t give the kingdom to a stranger, or to a hotheaded woman who fornicates with the help. The kingdom needs stability, and Madeleine is stable.
Is she, though? What she pulled the other night in his study was definitely a little crazy. Leo has warned him that she is way more harmful than she looks.
What are his options? Olivia is shutting him out and banging other people. Amara says she doesn’t love him, but maybe she could learn to? Or, maybe she could just be his companion, and… No, she won’t accept. He’s pretty sure she wouldn’t accept.
But then what, at the end of the week he chooses someone, and he never sees Amara again? That’s no good either. There has to be a solution.
‘Shit,’ he swerves, almost hitting a hedgehog trying to cross the road. Damn, he thinks. He really is distracted.
There’s still Kiara and Penelope. Are they contenders? Not sure if Penelope has it in her to be queen. Kiara, he sees her as more of a noblewoman doubled as a diplomat. He would definitely get her to be a part of his council, but marry her? No. His father is not a fan either, he doesn’t think she’s a leader.
‘This is a clusterfuck,’ he mumbles to himself. In five days, the Decision Ball will be upon him, and he is very far from having made a decision.
He turns onto the small road leading up to the cabin. He hasn’t been here in a while. Last time was months ago, when he needed to unplug after his brother abdicated. Drake had offered to have a weekend at the cabin together, just them guys. Max had joined for one evening. That was probably Liam’s last memory of normalcy.
Here he is, pulling up to the cabin. He parks near Bertrand’s car and lets himself out of his own. From the backseat, he grabs the apple pie and white wine bottle that he brought despite Drake’s request not to bring anything.
He knocks, weirdly anxious.
‘Hey,’ Drake says, opening the door. ‘I told you not to bring anything.’
He wraps him in a bear hug, and Liam lets out an imperceptible sigh of relief. ‘You knew I would.’
‘Heh, I did. Come on in. Everyone’s here already.’
And here they are. The Beaumonts, Hana, Liv, and Amara, all out in the backyard, joking around and having coffee.
‘Liam!’ Hana notices him. ‘So good to see you!’
She approaches him and gives him a warm hug. Liam is grateful for the enthusiasm. Everyone else greets him, Bertrand with a handshake, Max with a huge hug, and Amara with a quick one. Upon touching her skin, Liam’s heart flutters. He’ll have to shut it down really quickly if he doesn’t want to make everything awkward.
Only Liv has not gotten up from her chair outside. ‘Liv, hi, how are you?’ Liam risks.
‘Liam. I’m good, how are you?’
Her tone is cold as ice. Still no improvement from their last interaction. She’s not even meeting his eye. Is she embarrassed about the bodyguard? Is she angry with him for not standing up for her more? He has no idea. What he sees is resentment, and he has never seen that from her before.
‘Alright,’ Drake says, ‘let’s have some food!’
*****
Amara is pleasantly surprised with the free-flowing conversation. She thought Liam’s arrival would put a damper on things, and it has, to some extent, but his company is pleasant today, he’s not being weird, except for when she hugged him hello and he lingered. But if that’s her only problem, she’ll be fine.
She has to watch herself, though. Be cool, Suarez, she thinks. She made a point to sit farther from Drake than she usually does. She is between Hana and Maxwell, which feels natural, but also prevents her from reflexively taking Drake’s hand for everyone to see.
They try not to interact too much, but still let themselves joke around with each other in reaction to Max’s antics, or Liv’s badassery. It feels restrained, but natural nonetheless. Liam knows they’re ‘friends,’ he probably even thinks they’re close, especially since Drake defended her against Tariq and stood up for her when Liam was inappropriate.
‘Oh, so you were all here last night?’ Liam asks, when Drake makes a reference to last night’s dinner.
‘Yeah,’ Max quickly responds, ‘except for Bertrand who had business to conduct. But I took Hana, Amara and Liv here. It seemed like a good opportunity to blow off steam and hang out!’
Amara holds her breath. She can see on Liam’s face that he has FOMO. Before he arrived, they agreed that they wouldn’t hide that they’d all spent the night, especially since they’d have to take their luggage back and bring it to Penelope’s estate. But still, his reaction was somewhat worrying.
Drake’s eyes meet hers, and he chimes in. ‘It was a spur of the moment kinda thing. I know you had meetings. But next time--’
Liam waves him off. ‘Of course! I wish I could have been there, but I could barely free up these few hours this morning, can you imagine the uproar if I’d left court last night?’
He plasters on the fake smile that Amara hates so much. She knows she has to change the subject. ‘So how are things at court? Is everyone behaving without us?’
Liam drops the façade and takes a deep breath. Shit, Amara thinks. Maybe it wasn’t the right way to divert the conversation. ‘Well,’ Liam begins, ‘it’s definitely been quiet. Kiara and Penelope spend most of their time together, although I had a very pleasant one-on-one with Kiara. But um…’ He pauses and scans everyone’s faces. ‘Madeleine is acting a bit...suspicious. Can I be blunt?’
Drake nods. ‘Go ahead. We’re steel traps.’
‘She showed up in my study the other night, clearly trying to seduce me, and when I rejected her, I could tell that she was really pissed off. I’m convinced that she’s involved in the...pictures.’ Liv looks away, and Liam continues. ‘I’m waiting on some more reports from security. Bastien is on the case, looking for clues.’
Amara turns to Drake, and they make brief eye contact. They both know that putting Bastien on the case will do nothing. And yet, they both have zero interest in speaking up about him, because he’s the only reason why no one has found out about their relationship yet.
Hana senses the tension and chimes in. ‘I think there’s nothing more you can do, Liam. Amara has tried to investigate. The phone used to send out my picture was a burner, linked to no one. The envelopes are untraceable for now. There’s just not enough to go off of. All you can do now is keep being a reassuring presence.’
Liam nods. ‘You’re right. I just want this madness to stop. If Madeleine is involved…’ he interrupts himself and glances at Amara. She knows what he wants to say. But he stops in his tracks, probably not wanting to offend her or freak her out.
So, Amara says what they’re all thinking. ‘If she’s involved, I’ll be the next target.’

Absolutely Smitten
Dang. I really suck at keeping my word, don’t I? Whelp, for those who care, it’s here now! This is the first of I don’t know how many parts of “Six Foot Seven”, a new series/book thing I’ve been working on lately, requested by @i-cant-reach-im-too-short! The entirety of the series will be based on her real-life love story, as well as a playlist she gave me. First song was Absolutely Smitten by Dodie Clark. Hope you all enjoy! :)
Tumblr media
“Teddy, come eat!” I call out from the kitchen, rattling his food around the large metal bowl. I wait a few minutes before yelling out his name again. “Teddy! Teddy Bear! C’mon! I have to leave soon and you need to eat.” Still no response.
And so begins my daily game of “Find the Giant Dog Hiding in my Tiny Apartment and Hope He Didn’t Run Off and Start the Zombie Apocalypse Without Me”. Such a great way to start my day…
I search behind couches and loveseats, inside closets and my bathroom only to find absolutely nothing. “Where, oh where has my Teddy gone, oh where, oh where could he be,” I sing softly under my breath, “In the closet he’s not, with me he’s… Also not, oh where, oh where could he be.” I continue with my non-rhyming song, raising my volume a little as I get closer and closer to my bedroom, the only other place he could be hiding.
When I finally reach the doorway, I hear a playful bark come out from beneath my bed. I lower myself down to my knees, pull up the flashlight on my phone, and put my right cheek against the carpet. And, sure enough, I’m staring into the eyes of my slightly-obnoxious-but-still-very-lovable German Shepard. Who also just so happens to be stuck underneath the bed I just got.
How he got there is beyond me and getting him out is going to be a serious victory on my end. As in, the kind of victory that deserves a pint and a half of double chocolate chip ice cream and a box of Cheez-Its after work. I try coaxing him out, seeing if he can squeeze himself just enough to remove himself from the tight spot. I bribe him with treats and squeaky toys, but he doesn’t move a muscle. So, I move on to what I knew was, ultimately, inevitable and would no doubt break all of my limbs off of my body.
Have you ever seen a 5’2 Asian girl trying to lift up a Queen size metal bed frame (with the mattress on top of it because she had just woken up half an hour ago and was still extremely tired, so she wasn’t smart enough to take it off) at least a foot off the ground completely and utterly by herself? I haven’t, but God damn it must be hilarious to look at. Actually doing it, though? Terrible. Absolutely horrid. The worst thing I’ve ever done in my 22 years of living. I mean, seriously. What is this thing made out of? Steel with a brick-filled mattress? Ridiculousness, I tell you!
Twenty minutes later, Teddy is roaming free around our brand new home while I’m lying on my bedroom floor exhausted and trying to find a will to live, which immediately comes with an alarm going off on my phone. Who would’ve thought I’d be so ecstatic to leave the comfort of my apartment for an entire day of work behind a desk only running on four hours of sleep. I force myself up and attempt to wipe as much dog hair off of my once clean clothes, abandoning hope soon after---there’s just no escaping it.
Collecting my things, I make my way toward the door, glancing quickly at the clock on my stove. Right on time, I think to myself. Waiting for the elevator was maddening. Come on...
I mash the button impatiently, muttering curse words under my breath in frustration. I do the same when the doors finally slide open, revealing a small family of three with a tiny puppy on a leash. The slow background music only fueled my anxiety.
Before the doors are even wide enough to accommodate an entire person, I slip through the tiny gap and race outside. I flatten my hair and my eyes immediately dart to the left, finding exactly what---or, more specifically, who---I was looking for walking toward me.
“Holy shit,” I murmur softly. How is it possible for one person to look so amazing just walking down the street? I soon realize I’m staring like a literal stalker, so before I’m caught, I turn and start walking swiftly in the same direction he’s going.
“Megan!” I hear a familiar, deep voice call from behind me, “Wait up!”
“Not a chance! I’d say you’ve got long enough legs to catch up to me,” I respond, an air of fake confidence in my voice. I slow down only slightly, despite my original statement, and, sure enough, Owen manages to reach me in a few long strides.
“You’re difficult, you know that?” he laughs softly. I pray that no one saw my insides turn into literal jelly. What am I even supposed to do? My legs keep moving, but my mind is such a jumbled mush that it can’t comprehend anything around me. Which shouldn’t be happening. I’m a strong, independent woman---I don’t need him telling me if I’m pretty or not. I don’t.
So, as we walk, I begin concentrating on not concentrating on him. I quickly find that doing so is no use to me and caused me to not hear a single word Owen just spoke.
“You still there, shorty?” he teases, poking the top of my head.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah! Sorry. Just a little out of it, I guess.” Which was true, to be fair---I just decided it would be better to give him only half of the truth, for my heart’s sake. “What’d you say?”
Owen’s shoulder bumps into mine slightly, “I asked if you were eating in the office today. Thought I’d join you, but it looks as though you’re empty-handed.”
I stop in my tracks as he finishes speaking. “Idiot. Idiot, idiot, idiot,” I whisper to myself, hoping he doesn’t hear me. Because my luck is shit today, he does, and he seems to believe I was talking to him.
“Excuse me?” Owen laughs nervously, surprised by my comment.
“No!” I exclaim a little too loudly, “Not you! I was talking to myself. Didn’t realize it until you mentioned it, but I forgot my food at home; it’s been a crazy morning, so I didn’t really think about grabbing to before I left.”
“What happened?”
“Oh, nothing important, really. Just stuff with my dog…” I wanted to add ‘and you’, but it seems a bit… Forward. Creepy. Stalker-ish. Take your pick. “Made some grilled chicken, noodles, and asparagus last night, too. Looks like it’s the vending machine for me today! Yay.”
“I mean, you don’t have to…” Owen looks away slightly as his sentence trails off.
I let out a bitter laugh. “Unless you’re suggesting that I turn back and risk being late just for a bag of mediocre food, I’m afraid I do.”
“Fair point, but no. ‘Tis not what I mean by that, miss,” he taunts, putting on one of the worst fake British accents I’ve ever heard. It’s something he does often. Why? No clue---not even an inkling of an idea, but it makes my heart melt every time.
“Then what do you have in mind?”
“We could always go out to lunch. There’s this cafe-diner-thing a block or two down from the office that serve the best grilled cheese known to man. If you haven’t tried don’t think I won’t drag you there myself,” Owen laughs. I can feel my eyes light up at the prospect of that. “It can be a group thing or something.”
My shoulders deflate just a tiny bit. I knew it wasn’t going to be a date---I’m not that stupid, but I hoped it could at least be just the two of us. It’s okay, I think to myself, taking in a deep breath, It doesn’t matter. We’re just friends. I force a smile before agreeing. “Oh, yeah. Totally! Sounds great. I can see if Laura and Chelsea want to come.”
We’d finally reached our destination when the conversation began and are now parting ways as it ends. “Awesome! See you then?”
“Definitely,” I say softly. Despite my disappointment, I’m able to produce a small---but very genuine---smile.
I’m practically floating as I make my way to my tiny desk and collapse onto my rolling chair. Slumped completely down (in a way that is terrible for my back), I let out a startled screech as a voice, seemingly coming from nowhere, scares me senseless.
“You’re late,” Chelsea teases in a sing-song tone from above me.
“...No I’m not.” I point at the large clock across the room.
“How…” she stumbles over words, “How do you know I didn’t come in early and change the time on all of the clocks because... Pranks?”
“Chels, you’re still wearing your coat.”
“It’s cold.”
“How about the fact that, one, your coffee is still steaming and you refuse to drink the tar that they have here. Two, you don’t wake up any earlier than you absolutely have to because you’re the definition of a night owl. Or, and I’d say this is my most convincing argument, three, you just don’t care enough to do that.” I sit up as I rest my case and begin pulling out my things for the day.
“You’re no fun,” Chelsea pouts, lowering herself behind the cork board wall that separates us.
Ignoring her very hurtful words, I continue the conversation as though nothing happened, “Has Laura come in yet?”
She scoots her chair over to your side as she answers, “I don’t think so. Or if she has I haven’t seen her. Why?”
I let out a groan and drop my head onto my desk, smashing the keys on my laptop. “Great. I needed her to help me make some copies because I have to meet with some clients later today and I have no clue how to work that… Thing.”
Chelsea opens her mouth, prepared to offer help, but I cut her off before she can, “Don’t. I love you, but she’s the only one who can tame the beast. I swear that if anyone looked at it the wrong way it would set the entire building on fire. Especially if it were either of us.”
“That’s fair,” she relinquishes. Suddenly, a tornado in human form tears through the office dropping a pile of things on Laura’s desk and races into a conference room, all in a matter of .04357 milliseconds.
“She’s here,” I chuckle slightly.
Twenty minutes later, Laura races back into the room and all but sprints to her desk. Thinking she might actually be done in there, I try to ask for her help. And, before I’m ever able to finish saying her name, she explains, “Can’t talk right now. Still doing the presentation; just forget some papers.”
Not long after that, Laura is finally free and snatches my papers from my desk, taking them to that dreaded machine and returning with 15 more than I need.
“Sorry about the extras,” she sighs as she drops them in my lap, “There was an error with the copier, but at least you have those if you need them.”
“Thank you!” I exclaim in a hushed voice, “You are a life saver, I swear!”
“Are you just now figuring that out?” Laura laughs.
I stick my tongue out at her before continuing my work.
I later feel a light tap on my shoulder. Turning around, I find Owen standing there, a large stack of papers in his hand. “Hey, what’s up?”
“I was just on my way to steal Anthony’s copier, but I thought I’d let you know that James, Benny, and the others can’t make it to lunch. Any luck with you?”
Before I can even consider speaking, Laura immediately turned the focus of the conversation to Anthony. “Wait. Wait just a second. Anthony’s been hiding a perfectly working copier from us?!”
“Guess so.” Owen gives a small shrug.
“What the hell!” she exclaims angrily.
To avoid the situation from escalating, I direct us back to our original topic. “I completely forgot to ask about lunch. Umm… Chels, Laura, either of you doing anything for lunch? I forgot my food this morning, so we thought it’d be a fun idea to get a little group together to go out.” My friends share a conspiratorial look when I’m finished.
Chelsea’s the first to respond. “I really wish I could, but,” she pauses, “I have to run home and feed Pepper. Planned on just stopping by McDonald’s or something on my way back.”
“Neither can I,” Laura sighs with an ingenuine sadness in her voice, “Thomas wanted to take me out at that new sushi place across town. Sorry. Hope you guys have fun.”
A smile twitching on his lips, Owen turns back to me. “Just the two of us, then.”
“Yep,” I mumble quietly, my face growing warmer by the second.
“See you in a bit?”
“Yep,” I repeat myself. His smile was now a grin as he left. Once he’s gone, I snap my eyes back to the two girls, glaring.
“What the fuck was that about?! First of all, you,” I point at Chelsea’s floating head, “Don’t a cat. Or a dog. Or any kind of pet! As for you, Laura. Don’t think I don’t know that Thomas won’t be home for another week. That’s all you’ve been talking about since he left!”
“It’s a week and three days,” she corrects me.
“Exactly my point!”
“Sorry, but we had to!” Chelsea cuts in, “You’ve had one of Cupid’s little arrows stuck in your ass since you started working here two years ago!”
“Not to mention the fact that this is probably the happiest we’ve seen you since your sister made you move out all because what’s-his-name told her to,” Laura adds.
I sigh, sinking into my chair for the second time today. “I know you guys are just trying to be nice. And, you’re right; I have been. He just makes me feel all kinds of weird inside. It’s like I can’t control anything when I’m around him, but that doesn’t mean I need your help with him.”
Laura scoffs and Chelsea rolls her eyes at my obvious lie. “Okay. Fine, I do. But don’t do it so obviously next time!”
My personal matchmakers lower themselves back down and I spin back to my computer. Just another hour to go…
                                                   🔹🔹🔹🔹
Lunch seemed to fly by quickly. As we waited on our food, conversations were had about simple, silly things like our favorite color, or how we drink our coffee. Others were about how work had been going and what movies we’d watched recently.
“Okay...” he pondered as he took a sip of his sweet tea, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Shocked by the question, I couldn’t come up with an answer, so I gave him the most definite one that I could. Kind of.
“Probably anything but the Chuckie movies,” I laughed.
The moment that sentence left my mouth, he immediately corrected me. “It’s Child’s Play, you know?”
“What?”
“The movies.”
“Whatever it’s called, it scarred me for life, and I want absolutely nothing to do with it.” I crossed my arms and shuddered at the thought of even possibly watching it again. I knew it was a terrible movie, but that didn’t change anything.
The stroll back was uneventful, but peaceful. And, now, as we wait out the last couple minutes before we had to return to our respective desks, Owen and I have found ourselves walking slowly back to mine, trying to make our time together stretch as long as possible.
Suddenly, Owen grabs my arm gently, pulling me to a stop just a few feet short of my destination, and leans in. My breaths shorten and my body goes frigid as he does so.
His lips brush against my ear as he says softly, “Please don’t think I’m weird for doing this, but Laura and Chelsea have been eavesdropping since we were within listening distance. Anyway, I was wondering if you’d maybe like to go out to dinner tonight? Or this weekend? Or just, at any point in time that would conveniently work for you?”
I let out a chuckle---no, a giggle---at his awkwardness, but then I’m immediately hit by butterflies flooding my stomach as I take in his words. Once I finally come to my senses, my head is frantically bobbing up in down in complete and utter agreement.
After we shared out little… Moment, I make my way to my desk. At this point, I’m not even trying to hide the giant grin on my face. Or my blushing cheeks. Or the fact that my heart is thudding in my chest with pure excitement and joy.
Chelsea and Laura don’t bother pretending that they didn’t see what just happened, and they were sure to let me know about that.
“Did you see the way he was looking at you?” Laura gushes, “And that smile?! What’d he say?”
“What are you even talking about? It was nothing,” I roll my eyes at the rambunctious, gossip-hungry pair, but tell them anyway. “He just asked if I wanted to go out for dinner sometime.”
“Nothing?” Chelsea practically yells, “Are you kidding? There’s no way he doesn’t like you!”
I roll my eyes yet again, knowing not to get my hopes up, but I can’t help but wonder. I’d like to believe I’m not completely clueless; it’s obvious he just asked me on a date, but will it actually go anywhere?
The days that followed were spent trying to coordinate Owen and I’s schedules on the way to work, and deciding where we could go. We also found ourselves around each other outside of work more than usual as we waited for the day to come.
One more week… That’s all I’ve gotta do; make it one more week and I’ll know for sure if this will work out.

Why Corrin isn't allowed to have an alarm anymore. Or nice things in general.
For as long as he lived, Corrin the Wizard would never forget the awful event that resulted from over-protectiveness and gross miscommunication. That morning came to be known simply as: “The Isengard Incident”.
It had been an extremely long and fruitless night of Trollhunting with the others, and Corrin wanted nothing more than go back to Trollmarket and sleep. Oh that would be such a blessing!
Fortunately, (or unfortunately depending on your point of view) having not one but TWO trolls for mates meant that Corrin usually (ALWAYS) got what he wanted. Bular and Angor wouldn’t allow it any other way. May the Gods have mercy on your soul if you tried (keyword: tried) to say/do otherwise while his husbands were around. Or even if they weren’t, they always found out somehow and acted accordingly.
After saying his Goodbyes to Jim, Toby, and Claire; Corrin could hardly keep his eyes open. He wasn’t even walking anymore at that point, he was just sort of shuffling along. This could only end in one way.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this but, Bular can you please-mmph!” A swift and upward movement, and Corrin had a face-full of Black Scruff. “Carry me.” came his muffled voice from on top of Bular’s back.
Bular had the biggest smug grin on his face, while (carefully) strutting over to Angor Rot. “We should probably get Corrin home now. He obviously needs rest. Don’t you think so Rot?” he sneered. “Guys..” came a half-hearted groan from Corrin. Angor simply rolled his eyes and let out an unimpressed snort, before muttering under his breath.
Before Bular could even snap and ask what did Angor just call him, there was a swirling darkness and then suddenly dim lighting. All three were back home in Trollmarket, inside of Corrin’s bedroom. The incredibly large and comfortable pile of bedding, furs, and blankets now lay before them.
It was Angor that now had a shit-eating smirk on his face, before he turned and offered a hand to Corrin. “Shall we then?"he inquired glancing over at the bed with a snicker.
After stepping down from Bular’s back came an instant change into sleepwear. (Thank you magic powers!) Next was the ritual that Corrin had come to be familiar with, one that would be observed until the day he died.
Bular on the left side of the bed and Angor Rot on the right, with Corrin safely stashed in the middle. Believe it or not it was an ideal arrangement for sleeping for the small human. Bular was always radiating heat like a furnace; while Angor had a seeping coldness like some ice sculpture. If was too warm he would snuggle closer to Angor, if he was too cold then over to Bular.
Surprisingly, after taking a few minutes to get comfortable and adequately situated everyone was soon fast asleep. And so for a few hours everything was quiet and still, save for the rise and fall of three different chests breathing together.
Tragically, as Corrin was about to learn; in the life of a wizard and  Trollhunter peace can never truly last. He also learned that "I thought it would be funny” was probably going to end up carved on his tombstone.
It was in the early morning hours of 5:30 A.M. when it all took place. Two sets of eyes had snapped wide open, while the third pair slowly followed far too late. There was only a roar, a snarl, and a sleepy “Whaaa?” that signaled what was to follow.
Absolute chaos had erupted in the span of a few short moments, all thanks to one stupid (utterly hilarious) ringtone set as an alarm on Corrin’s phone.
“THEY’RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGARD! THEY’RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGARD! THEY’RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGARD! THE HOBBITS! THE HOBBITS! THE HOB-”
A whistle as a dagger flew through the air, an ugly shattering noise,  and finally a dull thud. It was all over as soon as it began, the danger had passed.
Corrin was fully awake now, and trying to get out from behind Bular who was shielding him with his massive body. Angor turned to Corrin, and started to inspect him for injuries. Both trolls were panting and on edge.
Corrin was finally able to get out of bed after both trolls knew he was safe, and looked around the room. The only thing he saw was his brand new phone on the ground, with a dagger piercing straight through it. He looked at the phone, then looked at his husbands (who were congratulating each other), then the phone, then his husbands.
He started making odd noises in his throat, while gesturing his arms vaguely in the air. He stayed that way for a few minutes, and when Bular and Angor were starting to worry he finally spoke.
“WHAT THE HELL??? Why did you two destroy my phone? I literally just got it a day and a half ago!” he exclaimed. Both of his troll mates just blinked at him confused.
Angor Rot spoke up first. “It was obviously cursed with some sort of hex, to try and kill you while you slept.” He calmly explained like it was the most rational thing it the world.
“Well whoever did it, they clearly weren’t counting on the Son of Gunmar protecting you” Bular proclaimed triumphantly.
They were just so F*CKING proud of themselves weren’t they?Corrin just SIGHED, shook his head at the both of them, and walked out of the room.

Harry’s texts are in bold and Ruby’s are in italics.
“RUBY WHITTAKER YOU BETTER OPEN THIS DAMN DOOR RIGHT NOW OR SO HELP ME I WILL BUST IT DOWN AND I’LL PROBABLY HURT MYSELF IN THE PROCESS AND IT WILL BE ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT”
I wake instantly from my blissful sleep to the insistent sound of Lydia hammering her fists on my door. What time is it? What possible emergency could there be on a Sunday morning? I manage to untangle myself from Harry’s delightfully warm and comfortable embrace and stand up, feeling each and every drink from the night before hit my head like a tonne of bricks. The big warm body in my bed stirs, but rolls over and continues sleeping.
This time yesterday I would have thought the idea of having a boy stay over in my bed was completely absurd. But I look over to the lump under my covers and smile triumphantly. Even if nothing comes of this, it’s a positive step in the right direction for me, being able to move on at last feels like a weight has been lifted off of my chest. Lydia interrupts my train of thought by banging on the door again, and I reluctantly leave my bedroom, closing the door behind me and dragging my feet to the front door, unlocking and opening it to find her looking very frantic and uptight.
“SSSSH! my neighbours will have a fit, and my head will explode if you keep yelling like that” I scowl at her, opening the door so she can come inside. I know I won't be able to get rid of her right away, but I do have to stop the yelling so she doesn’t wake my guest.
She storms past me, and plants her feet. “Why haven't you answered your phone?! I’ve called and texted and left about a hundred messages! What the hell happened to you last night?” she burst, her face going red with anger. Shit, I completely forgot to tell her where I went, I usually let her know when I head home just so she doesn't worry about me, but I must have been so caught up in everything last night that I forgot to tell her. I haven't even checked my phone since I left the club with Harry to head to the Library, which is totally unlike me, I am usually always checking it. I’m the kind of person you can rely on to be an emergency contact.
“Shit, I’m so sorry Lyd, I totally forgot” I apologise, grabbing her hand and squeezing it, giving her the most sincere look I can manage. Her face softens a little, but I can tell she is still pissed. She looks me up and down “Were you still asleep? It’s midday... you’re always up before 10, even after a night out” she asks, suspicious.
Do I tell her? Now? Or do I wait until Harry is gone so she can’t freak out on me because it’s been so long. Nothing even happened anyway, its not like there is much to tell, we didn't sleep together or anything.
Unfortunately I don’t have to decide, a throaty cough rings out through my entire flat, and I freeze. My face must look like a deer in headlights, and Lydia turns to face me, her eyes  and mouth open impossibly wide. “Who the hell was that?!” she whispers loudly, at least she’s not forgotten how to be discreet. “It’s just a guy I met last night” I answer, preparing myself for her reaction.
“Oh my GOD Rubes did you... Oh my GOD... Please tell me it’s not-”
“Jesus fuck, of course not Lydia!” I cut her off, not even wanting her to say his name. I just don’t want this to be ruined just yet. “You need to tell me everything” she demands, pointing a finger at me, and smiling. “I will, I promise, but you need to go. I’ll call you later” I whisper, ushering her back towards the door and praying that Harry was still sleeping and wouldn’t pop his head out or anything.
“I’m so proud of you-”
“Oh God, shut up” I chuckle, pushing her out the door before she can say any more. I lean against it and close my eyes, sighing heavily, before retreating back to my room, opening the door to find Harry more sprawled out on my bed than he was when I left, but still fast asleep. He must be sleeping extremely heavily to have remained unconscious through all of that. I stand in the doorway for a moment, just admiring the way his lips pout when he sleeps, and his eyelashes rest on the tops of his cheeks, his hair falling in loose curls, framing his face. He looks like a damn cherub and if I don't stop staring at him while he’s sleeping I’m going to fall in love.
Sighing quietly, I grab my towel from the hook on the back of my door and decide to have a shower, with the hope that it will at least help cure this headache a tiny bit. I haven’t drunk that much in a very long time. I’m definitely just not the party type anymore, not since the ex. While he went out and got drunk and went to parties every night, he would stay in and cry my eyes out, telling myself that people cope with break-ups in different ways, but now I see that he wasn’t hurting. I was the one doing enough hurting for both of us.
The hurting has subsided a great deal over the past six months, but my whole existence has changed. I thought that it would pass and I would be back to my old self again. I’d be able to go out with my friends and not care about him, what he was doing, wondering if he’d be thinking about me. How stupid I was to keep letting him in all of this time, when all he’s done is made my life a living hell, made me a shell of the person I used to be.
Last night with Harry, that timid girl emerged from the shell and came out for once, and it was amazing. It was like I stepped out of my own body and watched myself transform into a totally different person. He didn’t even cross my mind once, Harry was captivating, and hilarious and sweet and I’m more thankful than he will ever know that he bought me those drinks. I feel stupid for thinking like this, because he will wake up and disappear back to where he came from and I’ll most likely never see or hear from him again. But at least I was myself again, even if it was just for one night, its not going to magically cure all of my problems.
The water is lukewarm when I step under the pressure of the shower head, the last thing I want when I feel this awful is a hot shower. I scrub my skin with soap, trying to get rid of the stink of alcohol that seems to be coming out of every single pore of my skin. I take time to wash my hair and comb my fingers through my hair to get rid of any knots. My mind drifts to the boy in my bed.
I’m glad I haven’t forgotten anything from last night, wanting to preserve every detail in my mind, so I have something else to think of other than him. Instead, I think about the cherub boy that sleeps in my bed. I think about the incredible smell of him that will linger long after he leaves, I think about how soundly I slept in his arms, his warm breath tickling the back of my neck. I think about the soft brush of his lips against mine, just moments before I drifted off to sleep, and I think about how much I want to kiss those lips again. Properly. It’s so strange that I met this boy less than 24 hours ago, and already the thought of never seeing him again saddens me deeply. It’s not often that you come across people like that in your life, people who you can talk to effortlessly, people who make you forget about everything else, even things that you never thought you could forget about.
When I’m with Harry, I don't think about him, and that is a feeling I’ve been waiting 18 months to experience. Whoever Harry is, wherever he came from, whatever he’s doing, I want to know him.
Hopping out of the shower, my headache has subsided a wee bit, and I find myself feeling a lot less groggy. Still doesn't change the fact that all I want to do is crawl back into his arms and tangle my legs with his. Damn Lydia for interrupting such a perfect sleep.
With my towel wrapped around me, I put some BB cream on, just to make myself slightly more presentable. While I’m not usually one to hide my bare face, it helps me feel a little more confident about being around him. I mean, he’s damn gorgeous and I’m just... well, me.
Creeping back to my bedroom quietly, I open the door a crack to see if he’s still asleep, or if he’s finally woken up.
He’s sitting up in my bed, leaning against the wall and talking on his phone. I bite my lip and hesitate in the doorway, not wanting to linger and eavesdrop, but also not sure if I should just enter my bedroom and get dressed in front of him. I was kind of betting on the fact that he would still be asleep, but something must have stirred him awake.
“Yeah mate, I’m sorry I totally forgot-” his voice sounds strained, and apologetic. “I’m not sure where I am, I’m still in town-” he gets cut off again. “Yep, I’ll be there as soon as I can.” he sighs, finally hanging up.
I can’t help it when my heart sinks a little, having hoped that I would at least have a bit more time with him, maybe exchange numbers or something. I open the door a little wider so I can squeeze in and meet his eyes, he looks up at me apologetic, about to say something but he stops himself. I watch as his eyes wander up my legs, lingering on where the bottom of my towel sits high on my thighs, before lingering again at my chest and neck. He catches me watching him with a raised eyebrow and his cheeks flush. How the hell am I making this beautiful creature blush from looking at me.
“I’m really sorry to just get up and go, but I’m an hour late for rehearsal... I don't even know where the time went-” he begins, “It’s okay, honestly-”
“I haven't slept that good in... well ever!” he marvels, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, and plucking his jeans off my floor, squeezing himself into them, standing up and wriggling them over his bum. And then I become the one staring, I find him unbelievably sexy. I didn’t take the time last night to look at his tattoo’s, but he has quite a few. I notice the butterfly on his stomach first, then the two swallows, the tall ship on his arm, and a mermaid lady on his forearm. So many smaller tattoo’s dotted all around them, not covering him completely, but enough to make you wonder what such a random assortment of things mean to him. I want to know about each and every one, and why he got it.
“Are you hiding any ink under that towel?” he asks, having seen me studying his. I shake my head and shrug, “Never liked an idea long enough to get it”
He chuckles, pulling his t-shirt over his head inside out and back the front, combing his hair out of his face. “I am really sorry to rush off like this, it’s not how I wanted to leave” he shakes his head in frustration. But why should I have expected him to hang around at all? I’m just a girl he met in town anyway, and he crashed at my flat because he couldn't find his way back to wherever it is he’s staying. “It’s honestly fine, don’t worry about it. I’m sorry to keep you from your rehearsal” I apologise in return.
“I really have to run, or my manager will skin me alive, and I quite like having skin and being alive...” he jokes, taking my hand. “Can I call you?” he asks, a hint of nervousness in his voice, I did not expect that! He wants to call me! I nod, taking his phone and creating a new contact, adding my number and saving it, handing it back to him. “Miss Whittaker?” he plays with the sound of it on his tongue, and it sounds like pure magic. I want to hear him say my name all day long, my name has never sounded to beautiful. “Yeah, like the chocolate” I smile.
Harry looks confused, and I realise that Whittaker’s is a brand of chocolate from New Zealand and he’s probably never heard of it. “It’s a chocolate brand here - try some before you leave.” I clarify.
“I’m here until Friday, I’d really like to see you again before I leave” he suggests, his voice sounding like pure milk and honey. All I can do is nod, thinking of all the places I want to take him, the questions I want to ask him about each and every one of his tattoos, all the nights I could fall asleep in his arms. “I’d love that” I respond, stepping aside so he can get out of my bedroom door. I follow him to the front door, still in my towel. “There’s an uber downstairs for me-” “Its fine! Just go, you’ve got my number so don’t be a stranger” I smile big, squeezing his hand and he pulls me tight against his chest in a warm embrace, his arms around my waist and his chin resting on top of my head. “I’ll talk to you soon Ruby Tuesday” he winks, letting me go and disappearing out the door like a cloud of smoke.
Just like that, he’s gone.
***
I spend the hour after he left keeping busy tidying the flat, throwing out all of the bottles and cans from the pre-town drinks the night before. I spend the whole hour thinking about Harry and all of the things I want to show him, the questions I want to ask, and just reminiscing about last night.
Once I’m satisfied with the state of the place, I figure I should at least ring Lydia and explain to her what happened last night, I know she’ll be desperate for information. I locate my bag on the floor of my room and dig out my phone, plugging it into the charger next to my bed and jumping in, unable to keep a ridiculously large smile off my face when I smell him all over my pillows and duvet. I unlock my phone and ignore all of my notifications, going straight to Lydia’s contact and calling her.
She picks up after 2 rings, “Hellooooooooo my saucy little minx” she answers, I shake my head, she’s so wrong, always one to jump to conclusions. “Wanna come over and order pizza and watch a movie?” I offer, she knows full well that I want to talk about last night as much as she wants to hear every detail. “I’ll be over in 20, order me a pepperoni” she squeals before hanging up. I call the nearest pizza place and order two pepperoni pizzas and a garlic bread. I need something greasy to help me ease out of this hangover.
Once that’s done, I figure I should go through my notifications and respond to everyone, overwhelmed by the amount of messages, I open them up and the first one I see is from an unknown number, my stomach flutters.
I got away with my skin on! Thank you for letting me stay last night, you’re a marvellous little spoon ;)
It’s Harry btw :p
I can’t get this stupid grin off my face, even as I’m typing my reply.
Well keep your skin on and you can big spoon me anytime ;)
I feel like it’s a bit cheeky, but he is only here until Friday, and I’ve got no time to waste. I’d have him sleep over every night of the week if it meant I could sleep that well again. Also snuggling up to him makes me feel all warm and gooey just thinking about it.
My other messages consist of a check up from my Mum, complete with a picture of the dog in a Christmas costume - only three months before December. Texts from Ava and Hettie, asking if I got home safe, and one from Cory asking if he had left his pipe at my flat. I reply to each of them before finally opening my conversation thread from him.
2:43am: James told me he saw you with some guy, finally moving on? LOL
3:16am: You still out? You should come see me ;)
3:33am: I’m fukkkkkkkkkkkkkkd Ruuuuuuuuuuubsees
3:56am: Come see me, I’m all aloneeee
9:24am: Hey! How was your night? Unlike you to go to town
Wow. 5 texts in a row is very unlike him. Usually it’s me being ignored and not the other way around. It feels good, I feel extremely smug. I’ve got all the power here for once and it’s a nice change. I debate whether or not I should reply at all, I could just never talk to him again and leave it at that, but I know that I will end up missing him, he is still my friend at the end of the day...
Hey, my night was really great thanks!
I send that back, definitely rubbing it in a bit with my enthusiasm. I’m definitely not letting him spoil my Harry buzz. Speaking of, he’s just replied to me.
I might just conveniently forget where I’m staying after my gig tonight and end up at on your doorstep
Oh God if he showed up on my doorstep I don’t know what I would do. Let him in obviously.
Do it ;) I’m a sucker for lost boys
I scroll through instagram and snapchat, catching up on everyones stories from last night. I didn’t post anything, but a lot of my friends did. I frequent Lydia’s one, singing a terrible duet of Total Eclipse of the Heart with Cory, doing shots with Hettie and Ava, dancing on chairs in a club, pulling a face in the line of a club. It’s nice to see myself through someone else's eyes, I look like I’m my old self again, and I love it, I want to save them all and watch them when I’m feeling like I’m creeping back into a dark place. James’ story is a slow pan around the Library, jazz music playing live in the background, and you can very clearly see Harry and I leaning close together in our booth table, talking. It lingers on us for a few seconds before moving around, and I know that he would have seen it. I feel like my privacy has been invaded, and I can't help but feel like James posted that on purpose.
But fuck it, people can talk about me and Harry all they want, I don't care. In fact, I’d much prefer that people talk about that, then talk about me being pathetic and pining after my ex after 18 months. As if on cue, the ex responds, a pretty fast response time for him.
Looks like it. Who’s the guy you were with?
I decide for once, not to reply. Leaving him hanging and wondering. Feels good. Feels really good. He’ll pretend to not care, but I know he’ll be going crazy in his head, panicking that his back burner girl is moving on.
Lydia arrives not long after the pizza does, and she bursts in wearing leggings, ugg boots and an oversized jumper. “Hey girl heeeeeeey” she greets me, throwing her arms around me and hugging me. It’s a big improvement from her loud entrance earlier. “Come sit, I’ve got Love Actually on in the background and pizza is here!” I invite her in, grabbing two glasses of water from the kitchen and following her into the lounge.
“Rubes, I’m dying here, tell me what happened!” she gets straight into it, not even touching her pizza yet. I tell her everything, him buying me the shots, me going over and thanking him, him wanting to go somewhere more quiet. She interrupts me there “You should have taken him straight home then and there” I shake my head at her, that might be the way she likes to do things, but after such a long time without even kissing a guy, I obviously wasn't trying to get the first guy that buys me a drink into my bed.
I tell her about the library, touching on some of the things we talked about, I included the part where he paid and she gushed about how great he sounds. We’re the kind of girls who pay for our own drinks, even insisting a lot of the time, but that doesn't mean we  can’t appreciate a devilishly handsome guy getting the bill for us. I tell her about the walk home, and how big and warm his hands are, and how he’s over here playing music. I tell her about how he walked me home, but then was lost and didn’t know how to get back to where he was staying. How I invited him to stay and how we cuddled and almost kind of kissed.
“So... you didn't even kiss the guy?” she asks, slightly disappointed. I sigh, giving her a look. The kind of look I need to give her every now and again to make her take a step back and remember what I’ve been through, how hurt I’ve been, and for her to let me do things in my own time. She nods, getting the message. “Lyd, I want to kiss him, I want to do more than just bloody kiss him, he’s like... I can't even begin to describe how fucking hot he is, hot doesn't even do it justice. He looks like he was hand sculpted by God himself.”
“Are you going to see him again?” she asks, and I nod, “He gave me his number, he asked if we could hang out again before he leaves on Friday” I tell her, feeling a bit sad that he is only around until Friday, that’s only 5 more nights. Is it selfish of me to want him to stay and spoon me every single one of those 5 nights? Is it silly of me to even get involved when I know he is leaving so soon? I’m already giddy at the thought of him, and I’ve only spent 12 hours in his company.
I decide that I’m just going to say fuck it. It feels good being around him, it has made such a significant change in my mood, my outlook on everything, and my general mental health feels a hundred times better already. I want to spend time with him, and get to know him because it makes me feel good, and why not do something that makes me feel good for once, rather than feeling sorry for myself all the time.
Lydia and I talk until 10pm, and I can tell she’s drifting off mid conversation. “Do you want to crash here?” I offer, she can sleep in one of my flatmates rooms seeing as they are away for 4 months. But she shakes her head anyway, “Nah, I’ve got work early tomorrow morning so I’ll head home.” she takes her time getting up from the couch, slapping her face a couple of times to wake herself up a bit. I pick up the pizza boxes and follow her through into the kitchen, putting my leftovers in the fridge and getting rid of the rubbish.
She holds her arms open wide, beckoning me forth. I hug her tightly, squeezing her hard to wake her up more. “Don’t fall asleep on the way home” I tell her, handing her her car keys from my bench and seeing her off.
Once she’s gone I check my phone to see if Harry has replied, nothing from him, but I did receive a few question marks from the ex, obviously pressing for me to answer about who the guy I was with is. I’ll respond to him tomorrow, and leave him hanging overnight, because I can do that now, with all of my newfound power.
I brush my teeth and wash my face, getting ready for bed, when I hear a knock at the door. Probably Lydia leaving something behind no doubt. “What have you forgotte-”
Standing on my very doorstep with a cheeky grin on his face is none other than Harry.

Text
a long long time ago, i promised @stellerssong camping fic. here it finally is, with much love: 4k of wolf shenanigans and me dragging the founders. this is titled “werewolf gimmick” in my docs, but has very little to do with the tmg song - mostly i just found the dichotomy hilarious.
Thanks to general panic over midterms in the class he TAs, John gets home late that evening. Alex doesn’t jump to greet him like usual: he’s on the couch, eyes glued to his laptop screen, claws tapping at the keys. John toes off his shoes and sets down his backpack. “Have you moved at all since I left?”
“Mm?” Alex flicks an ear. “Oh. Yeah, we’re out of bologna.”
“And cheese.” John rummages around in the fridge for the salmon he’d set to marinate that morning. He has brussel sprouts he could roast, but that takes so long. Maybe he’ll make a salad instead. “Hey, Alex, would you eat kale?”
“Depends. Is there bacon in it?”
So, no. John takes out the greens anyway; he can have the leftovers for lunch tomorrow. The salmon just needs a quick sear, and he boils some minute rice. Fast, simple, nutritious: the kind of dinner he learned to make in his undergrad and thought he’d never have to cook again. Back before the — before Alex was a werewolf, John might have asked him to make quesadillas or breakfast for dinner, the two meals he could be guaranteed to not burn. But last week Alex tried to cook pancakes as a surprise and ended up eating a dozen raw eggs in the process. John found him licking the remains of the last one off the counter.
Alex is now exempt from kitchen-related chores.
John hands him a plate, sans kale. There are some battles even he won’t fight. “How’s the article coming?”
“Got another round of edits.” Alex snaps up a bite of salmon, not bothering with utensils. “I might be able to finish it tonight. Already started on the next project — the editor said she’s looking for a piece for December.”
“You’ve been working really hard.”
Alex snorts. “Yeah, well. Gotta make up for those full moons.”
“That’s one day a month.”
He nibbles at the rice, swallows down another piece of salmon. John waits for further argument, but Alex stares into space, thinking about his edits or maybe the neighbor’s cat. Ever since he got that piece published in Fast Company, he’s been writing non-stop, aiming for something bigger or more permanent. John is glad he’s recovered his sense of purpose — Alex, listless on the couch, eyes dull as he watches Cesar Millan videos, should be an aberration, not the norm. But then John is starting to think Alex is going too far in the other direction: working every second he’s awake, like he has to be productive or else he isn’t worth anything. He has bags under his eyes that aren’t just patches of dark fur growing on his face.
Last semester was — well, there isn’t a word to summarize it. Alex getting bitten, Alex dropping out of school, Alex changing in so many ways, obvious and subtle, all of them uncanny valley familiar. He deserves a break, a real one, a chance to not worry about looking human and just be able to relax.
A vacation.
John takes their plates to the sink. Alex has licked his dish clean and returned to his article, ears perked at attention. His laptop is perched on the arm of the couch, his hips twisted to the side to accommodate his tail, which thumps in time to whatever’s going on inside his brain. John grabs his own computer and shoots a quick message to Harrison: you have a tent, yeah? could i borrow it?
***
“We’re going camping,” John announces over breakfast.
Alex wrinkles his nose. “Like, today? Don’t you have class?”
“No, not today. This weekend.”
“This weekend.”
“Yeah.”
“Full moon.”
“Yes?” Alex is giving him a blank look, and John presses on. “You finished your edits, and you won’t have thumbs. I booked the campsite, Harrison is loaning me his tent. I just thought —  you’ve been working so hard, and you deserve a break, and we haven’t done anything special since, well. You know.”
“Since the bite.”
“Yeah.”
Alex picks at the cleft in his lip. At this point in the cycle he doesn’t have much that could be called eyebrows, since his face is mostly dark fur, but the tawny spots on his brow ridges draw together in something like confusion. “So you thought camping?”
“I can’t exactly take a wolf to the spa. Besides, you could use a change of scenery.”
Alex shrugs. “You’ve seen one tree, you’ve seen them all.”
“That’s not even remotely true.”
“Which one of us is the naturalist here?”
“I’m going to vet school, Alex.”
“Yeah you are.” His mouth falls into what’s probably intended to be a salacious grin but instead looks very canine, his long tongue hanging over his teeth.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“I’m dating a future doctor!”
John rolls his eyes. Swallowing down the last of his tea, he wraps his arms around Alex and buries his face in the fur poking above the collar of his hoodie. “I heard he even makes house calls,” he murmurs.
“Now who has the bad lines?” Alex asks. But he shivers as John presses a kiss to the side of his face, and his tail thwacks against John’s leg. “I’ve never been camping.”
“You never — oh.” He knows bits and pieces about Alex’s childhood, collected from hints dropped like breadcrumbs, but he feels stupid that this is the first time he’s realizing Alex probably didn’t have annual family vacations as a kid. “Well, I can do the setup and teardown myself, so that’s not a problem. Maybe you can catch dinner?”
“Oh yeah, cause I do that all the time.”
“You caught that squirrel.”
Alex shoots a doleful glance at the faded stain on the living room carpet. Two months later, and John still hasn’t managed to scrub out the evidence of Alex’s anniversary present. Who would have thought squirrel guts would be the Achilles’ heel to every cleaning product on the market?
One ear perks and the other tilts down in an expression John has come to understand as extreme skepticism. Alex says, “Let’s hope your surprise turns out better than mine did.”
***
Alex might be dubious about the concept of vacation, but that doesn’t keep him from howling along to Lorde as they drive down the interstate. Not quite in tune, though he makes up for it with enthusiasm. According to his phone, it’s a five-hour drive to the camp, and since Alex can’t pass the time with an extended rant, John has Pandora and a half dozen chew toys to keep him occupied. Alex “sings” along to the techno-pop, prods John into telling him about the latest gossip in the animal husbandry department, and manages to wrestle the squeaker out of his stuffed turtle — all in the span of an hour. Hour two, a Prius rides next to them for a couple miles, a grinning pit bull in the backseat, and Alex goes wild, barking and clawing at the door. When the car pulls ahead, he grumbles.
John takes pity on him and rolls down the window.
Alex sticks his head outside, face breaking into a canine grin. His tongue lolls and flaps in the breeze, and he laughs, an incongruous human sound.
“Having fun there?” John asks.
His tail thumps on the center console.
***
It’s afternoon when they get to the campground, their arrival delayed by a quick lunch stop. Alex has thumbs enough to open the door, but his hips have given up on being bipedal and he clambers out of the car on all fours, still wearing his Columbia hoodie. John hauls out his backpack, the tent, and the cooler. “Ready?”
Alex paws at the cooler and whines.
“It’s fine, I got it.” John hefts the gear for emphasis. “See? Marta used to make me carry her shit on vacations. Dad always sided with her, too, said I had to be a gentleman. Like she didn’t scare half the boys at school with her left hook.”
Alex snickers.
Workout benefits of being the packhorse aside, John is glad their campsite isn’t far from the parking area. He dumps their gear in the center of the cleared ground and rolls his shoulders, looking around. The weather forecast predicted a warm weekend, but cold nights in the mountains, meaning the fire pit should be useful for more than just roasting marshmallows. Through the trees, their neighbor’s tent is visible — must be a family, he can hear kids shrieking and laughing. Alex’s ears swivel in the direction of the sound.
“You can explore, if you want. I gotta set up the tent.”
He cocks his head.
“You won’t get lost, you can — I dunno — smell your way back? Just don’t go too far. Also maybe take off the hoodie.”
Alex wriggles out of his sweatshirt, with some help from John. Shakes out his fur. It’s not quite full moon, but close enough that Alex passes for some sort of wolf-dog hybrid. Only John would recognize that his thumbs haven’t yet receded into dewclaws, or what the awkward slope of his shoulders means.
Alex scratches at his belly with his hind foot.
“Oh, wait —” John digs around in his backpack until he finds the leather collar. The tags jangle as he fastens it around Alex’s neck, and his boyfriend makes a disgruntled sound. “There. Looks like you belong to someone.”
A warning growl.
“Well, you’re mine, aren’t you? Don’t want you getting picked up by some cute park ranger.”
Alex swipes a lick across John’s cheek and goes bounding into the trees.
Turns out pitching a tent is not like riding a bike — it’s been years since John went camping, and he had at least one other person to help him. He wrestles with one stubborn corner, grateful that Alex isn’t here to watch and laugh at him. By the time he rolls out the sleeping bags and stashes their gear, he’s sweating and the sun has crawled closer to the horizon.
Childish screams alternate with a familiar bark. John wanders over to their neighbor’s campsite and finds Alex playing with two little kids, sisters if their matching shirts and corkscrew curls are any indication. The younger one toddles after Alex, her arms outstretched, and he lopes just out of reach, reverses to dodge the older girl. His tail wags.
“Nice dog, is he yours?”
John turns to the couple sitting in fold-out chairs, watching the kids. “Yeah. I’m John, we’re —” he gestures back at the trees “— right next door.”
“Mattie,” the woman says, holding out her hand. “This is my husband, Thom.”
The man gives John a considering look. “What brings you out here?”
“Well, uh, it’s spring break.”
“You’re a student?”
“Grad student. Vet school.”
Thom nods. “So you like the outdoors.”
“Yeah. And Alex needs a lot of exercise.” John glances at his boyfriend, who’s getting belly rubs from the girls.
“I didn’t think wolf-hybrids were a thing in California,” Mattie says, not accusing, just curious.
“He’s not — we don’t know what breed he is? Got him at the local shelter.”
“Well-trained,” Thom observes.
“Ha. Well. You should see what he did to the couch. But he likes kids.”
“I’ve heard larger breeds tend to be really social.” Mattie adjusts her sunglasses. “We were thinking of getting a pet, since the girls have been asking. But I’m not sure how much time I can afford to train a dog when I can’t even get this one here to make the bed.” She swats playfully at her husband. “I swear, he gets up at six in the morning just to get out of fixing the sheets.”
“I’m checking the temperature!”
“You’re a philosophy professor.”
“Global warming is a real issue that affects us all.”
She rolls her eyes. “See? No help.”
“Pet ownership is a serious commitment,” John says, relieved to have the conversation move away from the subject of his boyfriend. “You wouldn’t believe how many animals we get at the shelter because someone didn’t realize their cute little puppy would grow into a bigger dog.”
From there the talk revolves around hypoallergenic dogs and finding a reputable breeder. At some point Alex wanders over, panting. He rubs his face on John’s leg, and John pets the tawny spot between his eyes. “Hey, ba — boy.”
Alex snorts.
Thom gives them a funny look.
John blushes and opens his mouth to — explain? deny that he’s dating his dog? — but the girls choose that moment to interrupt, the younger climbing into Mattie’s lap and burying her face in her stomach.
“Oh dear, someone needs a nap.” Mattie pats her back soothingly. “Thom, you want to get her blankie out?”
That’s their cue to leave. John pats Alex’s side. “We should go. Those hot dogs I brought won’t cook themselves.”
“Sure,” Thom says. “We’ll see you around.”
At least Alex holds in his (suspiciously human sounding) laughter until after they get to their tent.
***
“Alex, no — drop it!”
John grabs for him and Alex dodges, running to the other end of the campsite, the bag of marshmallows dangling from his teeth. He drops it, not for John, but to paw at the hole cut into one corner, trying to make it wider. Sugar smell, want want want. He bites at the opening and manages to snag one marshmallow before John snatches the bag from him.
“These are for s’mores,” he says, exasperated.
Alex grumbles. What’s the difference? They’re going to be eaten regardless, and Alex can’t have chocolate. Graham crackers are bland and not made for people whose canines evolved to better tear apart flesh and bones.
“We’re gonna toast them.” Oh, of course, that human fascination with cooking food. John continues, “Besides, you can’t be hungry, you ate an entire package of hot dogs.”
Like that’s ever stopped Alex from going through the trash. He whines, giving his best pout.
“Nope. That’s not working.”
He gets down on his belly and rolls over.
“You can wait the literal two minutes it’ll take to brown these.”
Fine. He slinks over to where he abandoned his book and lays down with a huff.
Three minutes later, he’s licking gooey marshmallow off John’s lips.
***
John has a hike planned the next morning. Nothing too long — Alex might have better stamina than him, but he hates exercise as much as he did when he was human, fetch and the occasional game of “chase me around the living room” being the exceptions. But it’s cool and green out, and Alex preens at the attention from other hikers, and when they reach the end of the trail there’s a waterfall.
Alex jumps onto a flat rock and tilts his face toward the spray. His whiskers twitch, eyelashes fluttering and collecting little droplets. John sits down next to him, shrugging off the backpack. “Having fun there?”
He wags his tail. Then his expression turns considering. John has just enough time to register his boyfriend tensing before Alex leaps into the water with a terrific splash.
Since the bite, Alex hasn’t been a big fan of baths, but he likes water — at least, more than he seemed to as a human. He paddles around for ten or so minutes before he climbs back onto the rock and shakes out his fur. John grimaces at the drops that spatter his face and shirt. Their tent is going to smell like wet dog tonight.
As if reading his mind, Alex flops into his lap, rubbing his muzzle on John’s cargo shorts. He looks up, fur sticking out in wet spikes. John bursts out laughing.
“I brought peanut butter bars,” he says. “Eliza gave me her recipe. I might’ve left them in the oven too long, though.”
Alex snuffles at the backpack, tail frisking.
“Yeah, I figured you wouldn’t mind.”
***
The thing about the outdoors is, it gets dark sooner than in the cities. Not that Alex really cares about the dark: his night vision is good enough he could read by the full moon light (theoretically, if his eyesight wasn’t fucked for small type and the Roman alphabet), and he usually goes to bed around midnight even when he’s not working on a project. But John is human, and worn out from their day of hiking and swimming and playing tug-of-war with his shirt; once the fire dies down and the stars come out, he crawls into his sleeping bag and promptly falls asleep.
Alex turns in a circle, settles down on his blanket. Waits. John’s breathing is deep and even. Soothing, in the general mate is content, mate is safe sense, but it’s not getting Alex any closer to rest. He crosses his paws, flicks an ear. Outside the tent crickets chirp, an owl hoots. Something rustles through the underbrush.
That gets his attention. He lifts his nose, scents the air. Musk smell, animal smell. His mouth waters. A twig snaps in the distance. His ears perk and swivel. Big animal, close, sniff it out, run it down.
He glances at John. Mate is sleeping, mate won’t notice if Alex goes out for a quick hunt. He’ll be back soon, maybe bring a share of the kill with him.
Alex creeps out of the tent on silent paw pads.
***
The first thing John registers is that there’s something warm and wet on his face.
He forces his eyes open. There’s a dark blur in his vision; it takes a second for him to focus and realize it’s Alex’s muzzle. Alex noses at him again and whines. John sits up, blinking hard. “Babe? What’s wrong?”
Alex prances in place. The fur on his face is matted and slick, the rest of his coat disheveled. Where has he been? “Are you hurt? What happened?”
He grunts and bounds out of the tent. John follows in his t-shirt and boxers.
Outside, Alex has picked up a large, misshapen stick. No, not a stick — he lopes toward John with the thing in his mouth, and it’s not a stick, it’s a leg, it’s a fucking deer leg, the hoof still intact, and Alex shoves it at him.
John stumbles back with a yell. “What the FUCK?”
Alex pauses, his tail curling between his legs in confusion. He whines around the mouthful of animal carcass; he hasn’t dropped the leg, and his teeth glint in the moonlight.
“What the — where did you even find that?” Alex huffs, and John feels his stomach swoop. “You killed a deer? What the fuck, Alex? How —”
“HEY, what’s going on?”
A bright beam of light cuts across the campsite. John raises a hand to his eyes.
“Excuse me,” the woman says. She’s wearing a khaki uniform and a green jacket with RANGER in bold letters on the side. She aims her flashlight at them, and Alex cringes, moving closer to John. “Would you like to explain what happened?”
“Uh…” John brushes a stray curl out of his eyes. His hand comes away dark, and he realizes the wetness on his face is blood. Shit, he must look like a mess. What is a park ranger doing out here this late? Did the neighbors hear them and call someone? Or maybe she’s on patrol? John didn’t think park rangers did night patrols.
“Sir.”
“Sorry, ma’am.” John gives her the most charming smile he can muster. “My, um. My dog — I guess he found some dead animal. Just, startled me, is all.”
“This is your dog?” The ranger frowns.
“Yes, ma’am.”
She shoots him a Look. “You know wolfdogs are illegal in the state of California.”
“He’s licensed. And — uh, I got him at a shelter? I think he’s a shepherd mix.”
“Uh-huh.” She turns her light on Alex. He drops the deer leg and licks his lips, folding his ears down submissively. He looks at her with wide, sincere eyes. Her face softens.
John interrupts, “Yeah, so. Are we good here?”
“You said he found it?” The ranger glances dubiously at the leg on the ground, mostly intact and smeared with fresh blood. Alex inches closer and butts his head against her thigh with a whine. “Hey, boy,” she says, holding out her fingers for him to sniff. “Well, out-of-season hunting results in a fine. But, since you weren’t hunting… I suppose I can let you off with a warning. Just this once.”
John sighs, relieved.
“But make sure you keep…”
“Alex. His name’s Alex.”
“... Right. Keep Alex from wandering beyond the campsite without supervision. There’s bears and wolves around here, you know.”
Alex coughs. John glares at him.
“Oh, and make sure to get rid of that.” She points at the deer leg with her boot. Grimaces. “You don’t want to attract scavengers.”
“Sure thing.”
“If you want, I could…”
Alex grabs his prize by the ankle, tenses like a puppy ready to dash off with its newest toy.
“I think we can handle it,” John says.
“Then you boys have a good night.” She waggles her fingers at Alex. He frisks his tail.
John waits until he hears her driving off to address Alex. “Did you really have to do the whole puppy eyes thing?”
He snorts.
“Yeah, thanks for getting us out of a fine. You wanna get rid of that thing?”
Alex slaps his paws on the ground.
“No, no, I don’t want to play with it.”
He runs a few feet, dragging the leg with him. John sighs. Moves to rub his face, remembers the blood, thinks better of it. “Fine. Just… bury it, at least? Don’t bring it in the tent.”
Alex trots off to the other side of the campsite and settles down, gripping the leg between his paws so he can better gnaw on the protruding bone. John climbs back into the tent, puts the pillow over his head to muffle the sounds of his boyfriend eating a deer’s leg. At least he’s enjoying himself.
***
One perk of dating a werewolf is that John never wakes up cold.
Sometime during the night, Alex wormed into his unzipped sleeping bag and laid down next to him. His face is buried in John’s chest, and he makes little grunts and whuffs as he sleeps, ears flicking. John rubs the velvet fur of one ear between his fingers — it’s damp but not tacky with dried blood. Alex must’ve washed off after he finished his snack. John feels a warm flush of affection, despite the unsexy smell of wet dog. He presses a kiss to his head.
Alex stirs and squints at him.
“I was thinking we could go for another long hike,” John whispers, “but maybe we’ll just sleep in? I can cook sausage for breakfast.”
Alex closes his eyes and snuggles closer.
***
“Y’all leaving?”
John shoves his sleeping bag into the backpack. “Yeah, I have to TA a class tomorrow and I still need to finish grading their midterms.” Also Alex is starting to get his thumbs back and twisted the lid off the tea thermos this morning, but it’s not like John can mention that.
Thom laughs. “Just give ‘em all a B-minus.”
“Well, it’s a lab-based class, so it’s kind of important they can do the math.”
He waves a hand. “Grades are just an artificial metric for determining whether students grasp the basic concepts.”
Yeah, and John doesn’t think Ethan realizes he solved question thirteen with the formula for quadratic equations, which has nothing to do with the test. At least Ethan is a double-major; maybe he’s better at bassoon performance.
“Are you teaching this semester?” he asks.
“Nah, on sabbatical. Supposed to be finishing a book on Voltaire, but…” He makes a vague gesture. “My best work is more last-minute. Besides, I want the girls growing up in the outdoors, you know? Our lives are so industrialized these days. Is your dog reading a book?”
John glances over his shoulder. Alex snaps his copy of Gibbons shut with a guilty look.
“Oh. Um. He must’ve… gotten it out of my stuff.”
“Huh.” Thom stares at him for a moment, then shrugs. “Well, the girls will miss him. He’s a good dog. Seems real clever.”
“He is,” John says, a bit too enthusiastically. “Erm. I have some stuff for s’mores left over, if you and Mattie want a treat for the girls? I can’t eat it all myself.”
“Sure.” Thom accepts the half-full bag of marshmallows as well as the uneaten graham crackers and chocolate bars. “I’ll tell them you said bye. Gotta extend the nap for as long as possible — I can’t believe Mattie got them to lie down in the first place, their schedules have been out the window this vacation. You should swing by the philosophy department sometime. Bring the dog, I’m sure he’d have more to say on Foucault than my upperclassmen.”
“I’m… certain he would.”
Alex barks in agreement. John tries to imagine a class discussion on French philosophers being led by an opinionated werewolf.
“There you go, open-invite. Where’s the place you work? The girls are gonna want a dog after this weekend, might as well go local.”
John gives him the name of the shelter.
“You boys have a safe drive.”
***
Hour three of the ride back, John makes Alex drive, claiming he’s too tired to focus on the road. Alex thinks that’s a weak excuse for poor night vision, but since John organized the trip and loaded their gear into the car, he supposes he can do this thing. Even if he doesn’t particularly like driving anymore: his new chase impulse means he’s tense behind the wheel, ears swiveling every time a car zooms past. His paw pads don’t get much traction on the gas pedal, either, so he cruises just above the speed limit.
A compact car pulls alongside him. The driver taps on their horn — probably wants to flip him off, the asshole, he’s trying his best here, it’s not his fault he can’t wear shoes —
He sneaks a glance. The woman behind the wheel gapes, slack-jawed.
John mumbles, sinks down so his face is buried in his sweater. Alex returns his focus to the road. Warm, pleasant feeling inside him: he and his boyfriend had a romantic weekend, and it wasn’t even new moon.
He drives them home.

It's so late at night here but as always here's the next part to 7 years. Hope you guys enjoy it. <3
PS:
There's a BTS song reference in here somewhere. I wonder if you can find it lmao
Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5  Part 6 - Here  Part 7  Part 8  Part 9  Part 10.1  Part 10.2  Part 10.3  Part 11  Part 12  Part 13  Part 14  Part 15  Part 16  Part 17  Part 18  Part 19  Part 20 - Final
Falling asleep after reading Jungkook's note proved to be easier said then done and you found yourself staring at your ceiling, deep in thought. You couldn't deny that lately you've felt a shift in your feeling towards Jungkook and his jealousy wasn't helping you one bit. It secretly made you happy when he got frustrated over you and, now, who you hung out with.
When you finally admitted to yourself that you felt something more for Jungkook, sleep slowly crept in and the next thing you knew it was the next morning. You weren't in a particular rush to meet Jung-Hoon and the fact that you were having a good hair day caused you to not even bother with makeup.
When 1:30 arrived, you left your house, bidding your sister and mother goodbye. The sun was out and it was late spring which meant that you could appreciate the warmth and your surroundings by walking to your destination. Arriving, you found Jung-Hoon seated at a table by the window, two drinks placed in front of him.
He seemed to notice you immediately as he waved to you and beckoned you over, sliding one of the plastic cups towards you.
"I didn't know what you liked so I ordered you a caramel iced frappé." Your eyebrows creased for a split second before you regained your cheerful mood.
"Well, you managed to order my favourite drink. Have you been watching me?" For some reason, Jung-Hoon stiffened at your joke and you blinked twice in confusion.
"Relax, Jung-Hoon. I'm just joking." He let out a nervous chuckle and alarm bells rang in your head.
"I know you're joking. It just caught me off guard." You made up your mind. If anything weird happened you were definitely leaving. You knew when something wasn't right and right now Jung-Hoon was making you extremely suspicious.
"Okay... so why did you want to hang out?" He paused at sipping his drink to look up at you through his eye lashes. Shooting you a dimpled smile, he rubbed the back of his head.
"I just think you're a great person and wanted to get to know you better."
Slowly nodding, you took a sip out of your own drink, watching him with slight caution. He seemed like he didn't have any hidden motives and after you came to this conclusion you allowed yourself to relax a bit, resulting in an hour long conversation. Soon both of you held empty cups in your hand and Jung-Hoon stood from his seat, grabbing your cup.
"I'll go throw these out and get their special dessert."
Grabbing his hand, you stopped him from moving away.
"You don't have to, I can pay for myself." You received a shake of the head and a grin.
"No, don't worry. I called you out so I should pay." Taking your hand off his arm, he made his way to the bin and then the counter. He seemed to be genuinely nice but you felt that something was off.
Deciding to trust your gut feeling, you began to think of an excuse to leave. When Jung-Hoon approached your table, you opened your mouth to speak but was interrupted when he suddenly sat beside you leaving little to no space between your bodies.
"Um... what are you doing?" The blank stare you gave him did nothing to the sly smile that was currently present on his face and his hand landed on your thigh.
"Don't worry, you've been so stiff this whole time. Just unwind..." he leaned in towards you and the puckering of his lips caused something inside you to snap.
So that's what this was.
Smashing the palm of your hand into his face, you pushed him back, much to his surprise.
"Listen, I don't know who you think you are to try some stupid shit like this but I'm not an easy girl. So I suggest you turn the fuck around and go back home Jung-Hoon."
Apparently, he didn't like that.
He snatched your wrist and pulled your hand off his face, leaning in once more. When you went to push him with your other hand, he restrained you.
Where the fuck was everyone in this café?
"No, you listen to me. Just fucking give me a kiss and stop being so stuck up. Then I'll have no use for you and I'll leave you alone."
No use? What were you a fucking wet wipe?
"Let me go before I break your neck, you jerk." You had no chance to follow through with your words because within a second, Jung-Hoon disappeared from in front of you.
It took you another split second to realise he was on the floor and someone was on top of him, fists raining down on his face.
"You worthless piece of shit! Who are you to touch my Y/N!" The possessive voice belonged to none other than Jungkook, who was mercilessly punching Jung-Hoon with every word.
To be honest, you had never seen him get into a fight so your shock caused you to freeze for a good minute or so. When you snapped out of it, you leaped out of your seat and proceeded to grab under his arms and pull him off the almost motionless body underneath him.
"Jungkook stop! I think he gets it!" He ignored you and scrambled back to his target, grabbing his collar and bringing his fist back. Launching yourself at his back, you clung onto his arm, restricting him of any movement.
"Jeon Jungkook fucking stop!" When his full name left your mouth, his whole body froze and the hand that held Jung-Hoon's collar slowly released its grip on it. He soon got back on his feet and grabbed you by your arm, hauling you up. It was only then that you noticed Namjoon standing before two boys that were clearly friends of Jung-Hoon.
"Hyung let's go." Namjoon snapped his attention to the both of you and shoved his hands in his pockets, stepping over Jung-Hoon's body.
Jungkook dragged you out of the café and away from the watchful eyes of the bystanders. When you had made it down the street, he halted his movements and turned to face you.
"You alright? He didn't do anything else did he?" Shaking your head, he visibly sighed in relief and ran a hand through his hair.
"How did you know?" Returning his attention to you, he glanced at Namjoon then back at you.
"We were in the café the whole time, sitting at the back. His friends were on the table beside us and I heard them start talking about some bullshit bet they made and that's when he tried to fucking kiss you."
You made the connections in your head as Jungkook waited for your reaction. Normally, you would have been annoyed that he had followed you but it's not like you actually wanted to be out with Jung-Hoon in the first place. So instead of snapping at him and walking away, you stepped forward and gave him quick peck on the cheek. Sure, you were acting out of character but his intentions were so innocent, even if he ended up beating someone to a pulp.
You also wouldn't admit that the small crush you had on him that had been gradually growing caused you to want to give him a kiss on the cheek.
He didn't seem all too shocked by it, if anything he seemed to be smug, the evidence being the smirk plastered on his face.  "Looks like your jealousy was helpful for something." Namjoon chuckled whilst Jungkook shrugged his shoulders.
"But Namjoon why did you come with Kookie today?" He slung his arm over your shoulder and pinched your cheek affectionately.
"Well you see, since Seagull over here is like a little brother to me, that automatically makes you my little sister." You burst into laughter at the nickname Namjoon had used and Jungkook's eyes widened in embrassment. He once again grabbed your arm and all but wrenched you from Namjoon's firm grasp.
"Come on, Y/N. We're going back to mine to hangout with the others." Rolling your eyes at his possessive nature, you allowed him to tug you down the streets, Namjoon following close behind with a dimpled grin.
-
Spending the rest of the day playing video games with the boys was more fun than it sounded. Taehyung's constant whining whenever he lost against Jimin on Black Ops caused Yoongi to throw hilariously rude insults at the boy. It became worse when they bet on the line distribution of a demo song called 'Cypher'.
The poor boy almost ended up in tears.
When the evening had crept in, they all began to bid their farewells  one by one leaving only you and Jungkook. Your initial plan was to head home but Jungkook had other ideas.
"I called your mum and she said it was fine for you to stay over." You let out a huff of annoyance, navigating around his tall frame. "That's not the point, you idiot. The point is I never said I was staying over, heck, you didn't even mention it!"
Making your way to his front door, you slipped your shoes back on and grabbed your bag only to be stopped by Jungkook's body blocking the exit.
"You're not leaving. It's too late for you to leave." Glancing at your watch, you then raised an eyebrow at his pathetic attempt to keep you at his house.
"Its nine thirty."
"Yeah! I'm not letting you leave this late." He challenged your blank face with a glare. You were getting nowhere with this conversation until he switched tactics.
Out of nowhere, he dropped the glare and pouted. Not a playful pout, oh no, a sad pout he matched with 'puppy dog eyes'. You felt your resolve weaken and before you knew it you were dropping your bag to the floor.
"Okay, okay. I'll stay." Suddenly, you were lifted up into the air and thrown over his shoulder. You let out small shriek at the sudden action and watched as stairs suddenly came into view. He only dropped you when he had reached his room and began searching through his drawers.
"Don't worry, I have spare clothes you can wear and a spare toothbrush."
"Oh really? Well do you happen to have spare underwear too?" You thought you had caught him there and you mentally patted yourself on the back. Your celebration was short lived, however, when he craned his neck and gave you a sly bunny-like grin.
"Oh my god, that's so creepy, never do that again." Your only reply was a fresh pair of underwear thrown at your face. Snatching the matching underwear duo from your face, you shot him a look that expressed how creeped out you were.
"Y/N, you didn't actually think this was spontaneous did you? I'm 18, I know what I need to know."
Why did It sound like he was quoting lyrics?
"Okay, as your friend I think it's my duty to let you know that you're as weird as it gets." He only shook his head in mild amusement before handing you a pair of shirts and an old t-shirt. Taking both articles of clothing, you made your way to his bathroom whilst giving him a genuinely concerned look, to which he brushed off with a snicker.
Once you had changed, you exited the bathroom to find he had set up a bed on the floor which he was currently occupying. Not being one to turn down the opportunity of a bed, you stepped over him and climbed under his bed covers.
"Hey! Don't you know that if you step over someone they get shorter!?"
"Jungkook, shut up."
It wouldn't be a real sleepover without snacks and a movie, so you both opted to watch Sin City and brought out bowls of popcorn and ice cream. If there was one thing you knew about Jungkook it was that the later it got, the more nonsense he spoke and apparently this hadn't changed at all since the last sleepover you had all those years ago. When the movie had ended and you spent the next few hours speaking, you made the not so hard decision to make him go to sleep. As funny as it was to hear him spout crap, you knew he was going to embarrass himself.
"I think you need to sleep now, Kookie."
"But I don't want t-"
"Go to sleep."
"Okay."
"..."
"..."
"We should get married, Y/N."
"Shut up and sleep."
"I'm being serious our kids would b-"
"Jungkook."
"What?"
"Fucking sleep or I'll burn your IU albums."
That effectively shut him up.
