Long rant with Spoilers Ahead! ⚠️
Who watched the MK1 Khaos Reigns trailer? Because I have so many thoughts:
Noob Saibot is back! How can Bi-Han be so hot as a human and wraith? (Or whatever Havik made him into…) Plus his gameplay looks so cool!
Sektor and Cyrax are girls in the new era, and they have cyber suits instead of being fully robotic. Honestly, I’m here for it! (And before the haters come for me, it’s a new era. Everything is different. Grow up.) Both of their gameplays look amazing!
Titan Havik may be even more deadly than Titan Shang Tsung, and I’m terrified… (also were those infinity stones in his chest? What’s up with that?)
We’re finally gonna see Scorpion and Harumi’s wedding! I’m so happy for him, even though it might get crashed by the Lin Kuei…
I think Takeda might get involved in the story! I would know those whips anywhere…
We also got our first look at some other guest characters:
Ghostface, T-100 and Conan the Barbarian
I can’t wait to see how they play, their intros, fatalities and arcade endings! So hyped!
And finally they revealed the return of Animalities, where the fighters morph into animals and absolutely destroy their opponents!
We know for sure about Mileena turning into a giant mantis but here are my guesses for some of the animalities:
Kenshi - Wolf
Rain - Blowfish
Scorpion - a giant scorpion
Liu Kang or Raiden? - a giant hippo
Quan Chi or Ermac? - a T-Rex skeleton
? - Hyena, Gorilla
In conclusion, the story is gonna be epic and the gameplay is about to get even more fun! But the wait is gonna be long…
September 24th. Let Khaos Reign!

when i eventually backtrack to try and rewrite ashrah and syzoths parts of mk1, the things i definitely want to do are
expand on ashrahs relationships with sareena kia and jataaka so that way theres more buildup to the events in ashrahs ladder ending
have syzoth and ashrah be more involved in the fight against quan chi and shang tsung beyond the escape from sun do scene. tbh i will probably reuse storybeats from to love again because i really did like the idea of syzoth using his experience as a father to appeal to sindel, and also i feel like ashrah and syzoth are MUCH better equipped to convince sindel of shang tsung and quan chis trechery than liu kang is. i mean liu kang pulling the "source: i am literally god" card doesnt necesarily make him UNFIT to do that alone lol but like ?? idk i think having the firsthand experience of their victims would be helpful too??
not sure if i want to include flashbacks for syzoth and ashrah to syzoths time with layara and ashrahs time with her sisters respectively or if those should be saved for their own story?? idk im still trying to understand how pacing works
but also with kr having given us a small glimpse at syzoth and ashrahs life post mk1s main story, i do also want to write about their time together in earthrealm after the fact. im still not sure if i will make that its own story or if it would make sense to make it one giant thing. bc theres actually a lot based on the intros that i want to flesh out
syzoth and ashrah BOTH studying and training for a shaolin acceptance examination + ashrah choosing to accept her offer while syzoth decides to reject his
ashrah and syzoth going off to rescue sareena
syzoth accepting his position as emissary + finding out about the shapeshifter genocide
i guess when i lay all these things out it feels like theres a lot that would be happening for one story to cover?? idk, i guess now that im actually laying it all out here it probably makes the most sense to divide these into their own multichapter fics + probably a oneshot or two

Why I Strongly Dislike MK1's First Kombat Pack
Mortal Kombat 1, which should not be confused for Mortal Kombat (2011) or Mortal Kombat (1992), is set to release in September yet they announced all the characters for the first kombat pack. In the previous games, the kombat packs were developed after the game launched and prolonged the excitement for the games even if micro-transactions ran rampant in them. Fans forgave and forgot as their wallets were eaten away.
Now the kombat pack is being developed alongside the base game. To me, that arrogantly announces that NetherRealm/WB knows fans will drop $80 for an unfinished game and they can continue leeching away with even more micro-transactions. Of course they're right. I have no doubt mortal kombat fans will take one look at this blog and berate it as hater talk and proceed to call me an idiot for daring to call out the hubris.
Yes, it does take time to get copyrighted characters in a game. There is a lot of legal nonsense and video game bureaucracy hopping around kangaroo courts. I am not even going to attempt to understand all that. But I want to know why we have to accept guest characters before the base game is even done. Plus the real reason Omniman, Homelander, and Peacekeeper are in is because they're currently popular due to their series everyone is going to forget by next year in favor of the new show to occupy their time.
There's also the fact Takeda, Ermac, and Quan Chi are not going to be part of the base game but will be ready as soon as the game launches. Like Shang Tsung, there's a high possibility these characters will be in story mode much like how Shao Kahn was a big part of story mode in MK11. We don't know what the story is going to be but I have little confidence they're going to exclude two big bad guys of the franchise. Especially when Quan Chi plays a heavy role in Scorpion's and Bi Han's stories.
So this first kombat pack is most likely going to use the none guest characters in the story mode. Make them essential to story mode. Then say "oh you like these guys? Too bad you have to give us more money to play these already finished fighters!" and MK fans will. They will drop $15 to $30 to play these characters. It's a problem NetherRealm/WB love to exploit.
Now... I wanted to drop in one wish I had for kombat pack that I know won't happen but would've been happy if it did.
Can we just forget guest characters? Or at least use characters that NetherRealm/WB actually own? As in the ones they obtained from purchasing Midway (now NetherRealm). What's the point in having an I.P. if you're never going to use it?
I looked through Midway's game catalog and while the vast majority is made of license games, there's still a handful of original concepts they've never dove into. Such as War Gods and Bio F.R.E.A.K.S which (based on what I've read on what little I've found on the internet) were Mortal Kombat without being Mortal Kombat. Surly there's like a few characters that could be pulled out of those franchises and dropped into the MK universe. They can be explained as being from a different realm. Easy. There's already several gods in MK, are we really going to say not a single MK god was one that revolved around War?
WB had made a Rampage movie along with an arcade exclusive game based on the movie. So There's reason WB sees a potential market for giant monsters destroying cities. One possibility for putting a Rampage monster in MK would simply shrink one down and have them fight like the monster they are. Other monster characters in MK were Moloch, Goro, Kintaro, Motaro, Blaze in his Armageddon form, and Ferra/Torr. There's also the fact that Injustice 2 had a gorilla on the roster and isn't Rampage's star monster basically a giant gorilla? Work is already half way done.
The Suffering was a survival horror reminiscent of Silent Hill. WB had decided the game was good enough to officially give the ok for Good Old Games dot com to sell it for PC downloads. Not as prominent as Rampage but at least WB noticed it.
Anyhow, the game stars Torque, a regular guy arrested for possibly maybe probably could have potentially murdered his family. The numerous iffy words are to point out that the mystery behind it was a big part of the game. No spoilers here.
Given that we've had horror movie characters get part in the kombat packs, and how several of Mortal Kombat's characters are essentially horror movie monsters themselves, we can accept a first party Rambo that turns into a beast to be in the game, right?
The only other game WB noticed enough to put on an online store was Gauntlet. Yes, Gauntlet was given to Midway when they acquired Atari. Midway has a long history. There's a total of nine player characters and two maybe three npcs that can be taken from Gauntlet and put into Mortal Kombat. Most iconic ones being the Warrior, the Wizard, the Elf, or the Valkyrie. There's still a small fanbase for Gauntlet begging for scraps and it'd be about time to give them a bone.
Unfortunately, the remaining games do not have a fanbase nor have they been noticed by WB as big money makers.
Psi Ops was a third person shooter with psychic powers. It was an amazing game on the Play Station 2. Yes, I'm old, I'll cry about it later. Can you imagine this psychic soldier using telekinesis like Kenshi with his guns and throw waves of fire then finish the opponent off by making their head explode? Yeah, Psi Ops gave Nick Scryer (the protagonist of Psi Ops) a Scorpion costume. It's one of the games I've kept a hold of after so many years!
Sadly, due to a severe lack of fanbase or any recognition, there's absolutely zero chance NetherRealm/WB would ever put Nick Scryer or any Mindgate Conspiracy character in a single kombat pack. I guess it's too obscure to be seen.
Then there's Area 51 which I don't know the actual status of. The sources I scoured across the world wide web didn't show much of it. I mainly remember the demo that was included in Mortal Kombat Deception. Given that it was the 3D era, NetherRealm is definitely going to sweep it under the rug.
Stranglehold was considered the game that killed Midway. While I never played or heard of the game prior to researching what WB gained from them. I do think Stranglehold has the potential to become a decent franchise if they ever decided to work on it... or they'll considered it cursed and forget about it. From what I've heard, it's like Max Payne mixed with Grand Theft Auto. If that's true then a character from that type of game would fit right in with other action stars like Johnny Cage, Terminator, and Robocop.
Last is Dr. Muto, a platformer that was.... not good. There could be an attempt to make the doctor use inventions in fights. Maybe update him to fit in better. If they considered it, possibly reuse the name for a more mature rated game. NetherRealm/Midway never did well below the M rating.
Aside from all that, I would like to know why we don't use more Mortal Kombat characters for Kombat Packs? I remember MKX having a roster of Alien, Predator, Jason, and Leatherface (of all characters, seriously? Why?). And MK11 had an abundance of action stars; Rambo, Robocop, Joker, Spawn, and Terminator.
Fun Fact: Midway developed and published Terminator 2 for the arcade. Meaning Terminator technically counts as a first party guest!
That was a joke.
Mortal Kombat and NetherRealm has had a long history with video games. They have an extensive library of one shot attempts and already established fighters from previous games. I want that to be acknowledged. It'd be a lot cheaper than throwing money at licenses to get an ok from another company. Plus we'd have some cool characters getting the spotlight they deserved. Just saying.

For All We Know
heyo I’m back with some more LiuLao for you folks. Enjoy.
Shaolin Rowdy Boys. Gore occurs. It’s Mortal Kombat idk what to tell you
Broken timeline
Blood and sweat run into Kung Lao’s eyes as he dives headlong away from the swipe of a cyberized demon’s claws. The thing’s teeth snap soon after, but Lao’s hat, flying back from whence he had tossed it, makes short work of the top of its head. He runs the back of one fist over his eyes to clear them, but only succeeds in spreading sweat and viscera over his face. He grimaces, lips twisted to make an ugly mask of an otherwise handsome face. Liu Kang, he thinks, reciting his beloved friend’s name over and over, like a mantra. He does not know what he could promise a dead man, but promise he does.
He had not seen the sweeping blow which had separated them. He had heard a cry, saw blood, and knew little more as the dust cloud tossed up by the movement of earth from the swing of a colossal sword and an outpouring of dark magic had obscured everything between himself and his friend. Before he could react to it, he had been accosted and pulled into a fight with the most horrific, half-robotic thing upon which he had ever laid his eyes.
Quan-Chi had evidently decided some time ago that the Cyber Initiative had not been depraved enough. Those who had survived it are still recovering, Sub-Zero included, though he has been restored to his body through some dark miracle and happenstance. These are demons, however. The infernal legions of Netherrealm have arisen under the command of a soul-hungry sorcerer who, for once, is not Shang Tsung. They rise through portals in the very ground, tugging themselves free of what look to be white-hot, glowing pools of molten metal. Kung Lao has seen demons before, but these are unlike anything he has ever had the misfortune of experiencing.
He has no time to think about all this, however, as yet more of the cyberized horrors rise and attack. He plants a boot in one and tugs his hat from the last, swinging it wide and taking off the heads of two others, including the one his weight has driven to the ground. It is not the graceful style he has been taught, but there isn’t room for that. It is slaughter and self-defense. And rage. Over and over, his mind plays the cry of pain he had heard from Liu Kang’s lips, clipped short, Lao is certain, by death, the air driven from his lungs by the force of the blow.
The giant which had dealt it yet lives, a colossus in the near distance, tangling with tanks. Special Forces are doing their duty under the command of Jackson “Jax” Briggs and they are holding their own. That is fine with Kung Lao, who now has only one goal: kill as many as he can.
He throws his hat yet again, and again, and again. With such force does he throw it that he feels the blade slice his own hand and mingles his blood with that of the enemy. When the guts spill from a particularly rotund half robotic abomination, sizzling on the ground in a purple and red pile, he allows himself a breath, his gorge rising at the foulness of the mingled scent of bowel blood and oil. He bites back a gag and pushes on, tugging his hat savagely, attempting to dislodge it from the fallen beast’s solar plexus. When it does not budge, he gives the chest a stomp and the hat pops up, neat as you please. Any other time, Kung Lao would be smiling.
He is not smiling.
His arms ache, his hips are protesting each step, his knees want to buckle, his neck and shoulders are sore-bordering-on-numb. There is blood in his eyes, in his mouth, coming from various lacerations and injuries on himself, but mostly dribbling from the razor’s edge of his hat, which he sets to spinning, using some of his white-hot spiritual power to do so, if for no other reason than to clear it. He is not still, however. Even as he does this, more of the demon things approach. Their cybernetic enhancements have evidently made them mindless. They do not fear the pure glow of holy magic.
“That makes this easier,” he grunts, summoning the hat and then immediately tossing it in a vicious, spiraling arc around himself. “Don’t cut yourselves!”
The words, usually playful, come from between tightly clenched teeth. He snaps down on them like the jaws of an animal trap. He can taste the tang of adrenaline and the coppery salt of blood. He spits, ridding himself of some, but not all, of the ghastly flavor. Kung Lao assumes it will cling to him for the rest of his life, so surrounded is he by the stench of sulfurous putrefaction and machine oil sharpness. It is enough to gag him, and he yet again swallows his gorge, which threatens to rise once more. Propelling himself forward, the Kung legacy spurring him to violent action, Lao continues his trek. He had not known where, precisely, his rage-fueled feet were bringing him. He is pain all over, exhaustion incarnate, but something has not allowed him to stop—and then he realizes:
He is headed toward the half-mechanized, half-demonic colossus who had dared to steal Liu Kang away from him.
It will not stand. He will take it out at the knees if he must and relish in the sweetness of victory while its innards pour out on the ground around him. Leaping into a flying, light-fueled punch, Kung Lao smashes through the horned head of a cyber demon, twisting around one which swings a meaty-metallic fist at his own head. With the next rotation, Lao tosses his hat as a teleportation target, though it manages to mow through the portly midsection of yet another Netherrealm denizen, who clambers for its sack of guts before pitching forward. Launching himself off its fallen back, Kung Lao dives into the very earth itself, so fluid is his motion of transporting himself to where his hat has landed, innocuously in the dirt in the midst of several more of the abominations. Where is everyone else? His question is internal, but bears all the frustration of having been spoken aloud. Fear clenches a cold fist around his guts.
What if I am alone?
He cannot see the heavy artillery battalion to the southeast, nor the other monks to his rear. He and Liu Kang had been separated from them for at least an hour. They are strong men, spiritually and physically, and brave. Where Earthrealm is concerned, the White Lotus will not falter. All the same, they are but mortal men. He is a mortal man… as was Liu Kang. Before he realizes what is happening, his vision is multi-faceted, misted over with lugubrious tears. They fall down his face even as he spins up in that small pack of demons and explodes his spiritual energy outward. The specter of the Great Kung Lao is now visible above and just behind him. He, too, seems to be weeping, though he had not known Liu Kang personally.
Kung Lao has never understood fully what this power of his means, or what it is, or why it works. The masters of the Wu-Shi do not know for certain and his household only maintains that he has “inherited the power of the Great Kung Lao along with his name”. But that has hardly served him in his life, has certainly not made anything easier. Every teacher he has ever had has pushed him to his absolute limits and Kung Lao has grown tired. Exhaustion cannot stop him, however. This bone weariness of his life is pushed to the back of his mind as it continues to process the battle at hand. This is not kombat, not truly. He is engaging in a fury-and-blood-soaked slaughter. A smile crosses his face, an unkind thing, even as the tears fall and redden his eyes, marking their passage through the grime on high cheekbones. The grin is hideous, a skull-like thing, almost more demonic than the Netherrealm “warriors” he now faces.
Three or four lunge for him, having learned nothing of his skill and range. With hardly a thought, Lao throws his hat right through them, the razor slicing bone, sinew, and muscle without a pause, pushed on by his spiritual force and the enraged sadness behind it all. His heart slams in his chest, clenching and heaving, pushing blood through his veins, empowering his every motion to its maximum level of force. He does not know it, but with every throw, he is screaming. His throat is going raw, yet still he is screaming until he begins to spit blood. His fists, lightning quick and also empowered by the spiritual pressure inside his body, fly out and strike without mercy or thought for their own integrity. If he has broken something, Kung Lao cannot feel it. He does not care. Everything is a red mist. Sound is muffled; he cannot hear a thing over the roar of blood in his ears. He tastes blood, feels his fists moving through solid flesh like pistons, and hardly pauses to throw his hat. The thing has begun seemingly to fly on its own, reaping the demons like wheat.
Through the fog of battle, a sound catches his nigh-deafened ear and gives him momentary pause. He tugs the neck of a demon he has pinned and ears the wet snap of vertebrae as they separate permanently. Without looking, Lao reaches a hand out and summons his weapon, replacing it on his head. He moves as if underwater, slowly, with everything and everyone closing in around him. They are dying at his hand, still, but he is not conscious of it. The colossal demon is still ahead, swinging its massive, stone-like sword, and killing, but Kung Lao is being drawn away. The sound—it is so familiar that it aches within his chest, which he now feels is hollow; his heart has not stopped so much as vacated entirely—is off to his left, and growing louder.
The fierceness of it is almost inhuman, but it is human. Kung Lao catches sight of something red, brighter, by far, than the rust color of the Netherrealm demons, and fresh-looking, like a gout of arterial blood. He narrows his eyes, bringing up a block just in time to deflect a blow from behind. Shifting his weight, he grabs the off-balance beast and tosses it onto the ground before him, sticking a knee under its neck and punishing its face and upper vertebrae, for its mistake. The limp body falls away and Lao tosses blood off his knuckles; some of it is his. All at once, his red-misted vision tunnels to black around everything but that splotch of red in the distance and the high, rhythmic shriek of his best friend performing the most aggressive bicycle kick Kung Lao has ever seen. Liu Kang lands and their eyes meet, with hundreds, maybe thousands, of cyberized abominations between them. It is too far to tell, but Kung Lao thinks that maybe, just maybe, Liu Kang is crying, too.
Never again, he vows, throwing his hat with more force than he’d anticipated still possessing. It flies in a straight line, travelling vertically and cleaving demon after demon in twain, only to return to its master’s hands as Kung Lao barrels through other demons, spending little time in killing them, but hitting hard enough that each one does fall. He can see Liu Kang making a similar effort, but knows that if he takes his mind too far off the task at hand, he is putting them both at risk. Leaping off the belly of one which has somehow misplaced its head, Lao drives his knee into the face of the next, landing with a crunch and transferring his momentum into a roll from which he throws his hat and dives into the earth in a flash of white. The razor-edged weapon zings past Liu Kang’s shoulder, makes a wide, bloody arc, and settles near his feet as he punches the guts—literally—out the back of a cyber demon. As another which has been miraculously spared Kung Lao’s hat reaches out to snag Liu Kang by the throat from behind, Kung Lao himself appears in a burst of holy illumination, severing the arm at the elbow with the hat he now firmly grasps in one hand.
They stand there, facing each other, for several interminable moments. The timing is strange—there seems to be a lull in the violence—and nothing comes at them as both young monks throw themselves into the other’s arms wrapping and holding tightly. They are both sobbing, great, dry sounds, with few tears left in this awful time and place. Kung Lao’s voice is completely shot, but he croaks something into Liu Kang’s ear that sounds like “I thought you were dead; I saw blood—heard a scream I… I thought…”
Without warning, Kung Lao lifts his friend bodily up and spins him around as if they are not at the center of a massive battle, as if these cyberized demons are not coming to gut them with an inexorability that has only been halted by providence. Nothing else matters, suddenly, but the presence of the other man. Liu Kang is laughing, smiling. The tears have returned; they are not all gone after all. As Kung Lao lowers his companion to the bloodstained earth, Liu Kang’s eyes meet his with a sudden, savage intensity.
“Kung Lao,” he whispers—and it is a whisper, strangely audible above the din. The creatures are moving back in upon them, but their gazes are locked; Kung Lao’s hand has begun to make its fluid motion up toward the brim of his hat, but he does not drop his eyes, “you will never lose me.”
It is he, the Chosen one of Earthrealm, Liu Kang, who closes the gap between their mouths, summoning a dragon of fire as he moves, tossing the strange spell of his unknowable bloodline over Kung Lao’s shoulder. Meanwhile, taken completely by surprise, the Great Kung Lao’s descendant moves with the strength and surety of long, harsh training and muscle memory, loosing the hat along with an effortless propellant of spiritual energy to send his weapon spiraling about them in a widening gyre. Liu Kang pulls his body flush to Kung Lao, the dragon doing his bidding without the need of a magical tether or verbal spells. It is good this is so, because his lips are far too busy to contest with such things as speech.
Liu Kang tastes blood in that kiss, adrenaline, fear, relief, overwhelming sadness, and unbridled joy. Their flavors mingle and with but a moment’s hesitation—enough for the surprise to melt away in the dragon fire of his best friend’s power—and Kung Lao returns the gesture with equal or greater intensity. It is as if a dam has broken, something at which the waves have been crashing for a small eternity. Finally, after all that time and patience, they have overcome their obstacle and now wash over and through and take away with them the feelings of guilt and trepidation which have hampered them. The floodgates are not open; they are destroyed. By fire and kombat, they are destroyed.

Mortal Kombat: Biggest Changes the Movie Makes to the Games
https://ift.tt/3sJUwuD
This article contains spoilers for Mortal Kombat.
The Mortal Kombat movie may be one of the first true blockbusters of 2021, but for millions of fans of the games, it’s also another chance to “get it right.” Sure, 1995’s is a somewhat underrated live-action adaptation of a video game, but its irredeemable sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, left many fans doubting that we’d ever see another big-budget live-action Mortal Kombat movie much less one that comes close to capturing what makes the games special.
You can read our review of the film itself for a better look at how close the new movie comes to accomplishing that lofty goal, but suffice to say, the movie makes a lot of changes to the games it’s based on. Some of those changes were almost inevitable given the transition between storytelling mediums, while others are more…debatable.
While there are a lot of little differences longtime Mortal Kombat fans will spot in the movie, these are the biggest ways the movie changes the universe of the games.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s Origins and Rivalry
We’ve covered this more extensively elsewhere, but the most popular version of the Sub-Zero/Scorpion rivalry as it’s portrayed in the games involves the sorcerer Quan Chi whose task pits Sub-Zero and Scorpion (who are members of rival clans) directly against each other. Sub-Zero kills Scorpion while trying to complete that assignment, but Quan Chi resurrects Scorpion after making him believe that Sub-Zero killed his family and clan.
The Mortal Kombat movie cuts through some of that by suggesting that Sub-Zero and Scorpion are simply members of rival clans and that Sub-Zero did actually kill Scorpion’s family. It also cuts Quan Chi out of Scorpion’s resurrection. The idea that Sub-Zero is directly responsible for those deaths could close the door on a future storyline where Sub-Zero’s brother and Scorpion unite to get revenge on Quan Chi, but streamlining this particular plot point makes a bit of sense when you consider that adding Quan Chi to the movie would have only added another piece to an already busy film.
The Reason For Jax’s Mechanical Arms
Again, we’ve covered this story before (in a great article you really should read), but Jax has lost his arms in a variety of ways over the years across Mortal Kombat’s various games, timelines, and adaptations.
However, none of those stories involved Sub-Zero ripping off Jax’s arms, which is pretty much what happens in the movie. Given that the story of how Jax lost his arms has changed so much over the years, it’s hard to blame the movie’s writers for not sticking to an existing story. Besides, making Sub-Zero responsible for the incident is a nice way to tie two of the bigger characters in the movie together.
How Mortal Kombat’s Fighters Are Chosen
In the Mortal Kombat games, people participate in the tournament for various reasons. For instance, Johnny Cage joins the tournament to prove he’s more than an actor who relies on stunts and effects, while Liu Kang joins as a fighter trained to protect Earth. There’s really no universal explanation for how people get there.
The movie tries to offer such a universal explanation by not only suggesting that fighters are chosen by fate but that you can become one of the fighters by killing an already chosen participant. That idea is already becoming one of the film’s most contentious changes as some ask whether the whole concept is just one plot point too many.
The “Arcana” Explanation
Why do characters in the Mortal Kombat games have special powers? The storyline explanations vary. Some were born with those powers, while others acquired them through mechanical enhancements or gifts from the gods. Mostly, though, giving characters powers was just a way to spice up the original arcade game’s special moves.
In one of the biggest departures from the games, the MK movie suggests that Earthrealm’s warriors have to unlock the “Arcana” ability within them. We’re going to cover a couple of the more specific instances of this explanation deviating from the games in a big way, but it’s worth highlighting the fact that this idea of Earthrealm warriors needing to unlock the Arcana within them was never really mentioned in the games. It’s a very “Midi-chlorian” way to approach the whole idea.
Sonya Blade’s Powers
Again, we could spend quite a bit of time talking about the many ways the Arcana concept changes the video game versions of Mortal Kombats biggest characters, but Sonya Blade is one of the most interesting and notable examples of such a deviation. As those who saw the MK movie know, Sonya gets her powers when she kills Kano, becomes one of the tournament’s chosen fighters, and unlocks her Acana ability.
How did she get those abilities in the game? It’s a little muddy in the beginning, but later entries in the series suggest that her abilities are based on mechanical creations rather than an inherent power. The idea of Sonya having a device attached to her arms that allows her to shoot projectiles really seemed to be part of an effort to help explain her otherwise unexplainable abilities in the original games, but it was a pretty effective way to do just that.
Kano’s Eye
The origin of Kano’s “laser eye” in the Mortal Kombat games is really pretty simple. Kano suffered massive damage to his eye in a battle against Jax and had a mechanical plate and enhanced eye grafted on to cover the affected area. That eye so happened to grant Kano the ability to fire a laser beam as well as access several enhanced modes of vision.
The Mortal Kombat movie not only suggests that Kano’s physical trauma was caused by Reptile (more on that in a bit) but that Kano’s ability to shoot a laser from his eye is part of his Arcana ability. It’s an…interesting deviation that is arguably the most unnecessary of all the Arcana plot points as Kano’s eye was one of those pieces of lore that was explained in the games fairly early on and has since become one of the character’s defining physical qualities.

Sonya Blade: Exposition Machine
In one of the movie’s stranger moments, Sonya Blade lays out a sizable bit of lore as she explains the concept of the Mortal Kombat tournament to Cole Young and helps him understand what it means to be chosen. She doesn’t have all the details, but what she does know is described as the result of a lengthy investigation.
This is another one of those instances of plot convenience, as there’s no early version of Sonya Blade in the games who is so well-informed about the tournament. In fact, in both the original game and the 2011 “reboot,” Sonya stumbles upon the tournament in progress while hunting Kano.
Reptile’s Design
I told you we’d get to Reptile. In the games, Reptile is a humanoid/reptilian ninja who is loyal to Outworld’s rulers and Shang Tsung. He is typically described as a gifted assassin and warrior.
The Mortal Kombat movie keeps some of those traits but strangely portrays Reptile as little more than a giant lizard. While it’s true that Reptile’s in-game humanoid attributes largely hide his “lizard” form, most of the games portray him as a creature with a somewhat human physical structure. Actually, one of the only MK games to show Reptile as a pure “creature” was Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and that design was not exactly well-received by many fans.
The Mortal Kombat Tournament’s Rules
While it probably seems like the Mortal Kombat tournament is basically a free-for-all, many versions of the tournament seen throughout the games do adhere to some basic rules. One of the most important MK rules says that you can’t attack another realm’s fighters prior to the tournament and that a violation of that rule could mean having to deal with the wrath of the Elder Gods.
The movie throws a lot of that out of the window. It does mention that rules exist, and it rightfully suggests that not everyone plays by them, but at some point, everyone seems to ignore the whole tournament concept altogether in favor of just killing each other. Meanwhile, the Raiden stands by and lends little help despite seemingly being able to step in and start smacking the cheaters around as soon as the rules were broken.
Liu Kang’s Origin Story
From the very first game, Liu Kang has been portrayed as an incredibly skilled warrior who stands as one of Earthrealm’s most capable defenders. The details of his origin have been played with over the years, but there’s long been the idea that he was one of the Earthrealm participants who has trained for this moment for quite some time.
The movie doesn’t stray from that story too wildly compared to other reworked origins, but it adds a couple of wrinkles by suggesting that Liu Kang was once a down-and-out orphan and that he “earned” his place in the tournament by killing a child smuggler who had the mark on him. The change seemed to be a way to explain how Liu Kang got his powers in the film’s universe and joined this version of the tournament, but it’s another one of those aspects of the movie which was perhaps overthought and creates a few character complications that aren’t quite resolved.
Cole Young: Scorpion’s Descendant
By now, you probably know that Cole Young was a character created specifically for the Mortal Kombat movie and doesn’t exist in the games. If you want to know a little more about the meta reasons for the character’s creation, I highly recommend checking out this article.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
What’s fascinating, though, is that the movie goes on to reveal that Cole Young is one of Scorpion’s descendants. Scorpion’s children have been featured in previous MK works, but they typically don’t appear in anything more substantial than a flashback or vision. The whole idea of Scorpion’s descendants living on through the years creates questions the movie doesn’t necessarily answer. If anything, that idea feels like a play on a moment in MK 11 when Scorpion confronts his younger self and convinces him to defend Earthrealm.
Did you spot any other major changes in the Mortal Kombat movie? Let us know about them in the comments below.

1. What’s your full ability, to your understanding? (Bonus Q for muns: Does this differ from their actual full ability? Or their potential?)
Scorpion is most commonly associated with hellfire, the Netherrealm's variant of fire. He is immune to the element and primarily uses it to confirm the death of his opponents, spewing it from his skull while unmasked. He is very versatile with this element, for he can summon it under his opponent, light himself up with hellfire to create a damaging aura of flames and hurl fireballs that can explode. His other abilities include necromancy and summoning. After being betrayed by the Elder Gods when they resurrected his clan as undead, he still found use with his undead comrades known as Hellspawns, who are capable of summoning hellfire as well. His summoning abilities allow him to call upon demonic minions that can self-destruct and floating skull creatures that breathe hellfire and spew explosive projectiles.
As a spectre, Scorpion is immune to death as his soul is still bound by revenge, allowing him to endlessly chase his targets until they have been silenced. He is capable of resurrection (even if his physical body is fully destroyed) as demonstrated in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance where he was supposedly killed by Quan Chi when he kicked him into a pool of acid, but later returned to life in order to find the Deadly Alliance and their minions. He also came back to life in the Mortal Kombat X comic series after Havik brutally killed him by destroying his chest and lungs.
Like many ninjas, Scorpion is well-versed in the art of armed combat. He has wielded various weapons throughout the tournaments, from axes to the most recent twin Ninjato. His most recurring weapon is the Spear, a kunai attached to a sturdy chain, representing Scorpion's "stinger." At times, the spear is empowered with hellfire for more power.
As Grandmaster Hanzo Hasashi, he has gained new powers and abilities. He can burn away his own flesh, revealing a fiery skeleton that can phase through physical matter and burn (sometimes vaporize) anything he touches, making him difficult to harm physically. This implies that he has a powerful healing factor that can regenerate all of the flesh he burnt away. Scorpion can also manipulate wind to create a fiery tornado of hellfire. Although it is unknown if this ability can be used for combat, as this is one of his intros, I headcanon myself that he could when he is dealing with multitudes of enemies at once. His teleport can now produce afterimages that act like solid duplicates as shown in one of his moves where he leaves an afterimage behind to hold the opponent's arm before disintegrating. He can also create afterimages to trick opponents of his next move. His affinity with fire is so potent that he is completely immune to Sektor's high-power flamethrower, calming walking through the jet-powered fire without even so much as a singe on his skin or clothing.
He also has several physical/elemental abilities (Italics only apply for Scorpion, not for Grandmaster Hasashi, a resurrected human).
Enhanced Physical Prowess: Scorpion is physically superior to any normal person.
Wraith Physiology: Reborn from the fires of the Netherrealm, Scorpion is an undead spectre.
Master Martial Artist: Being a ninja, Scorpion is well versed in Pi Gua, Hapkido, and Moi Fah to create a well-rounded hybrid art that takes advantage of his fantastic mobility in battle. He is also incredibly proficient in chained kunai and sword combat.
Hellfire Manipulation: Being a native of the Netherrealm, Scorpion can call upon and shape the realm's hellish flames.
Hellfire Immunity: As a native of the Netherrealm, Scorpion is naturally impervious to any and all hellish flames.
Teleportation: If Scorpion ever needs to close the distance on his opponents, he can simply teleport over near them. Normally he teleports behind the opponent to land a surprise hit on their backs.
Netherrealm Portals: Aside from outright teleportation, Scorpion can also create portals to and from the Netherrealm. He does this to return home and trap opponents with him in Hell.
Undead Reforming: Should his body ever get destroyed via physical force, Scorpion will eventually reform in the Netherrealm.
Immortality: Because he's undead, Scorpion no longer ages.
Netherrealm Boost: Whenever Scorpion returns to the Netherrealm, his power begins to rise. The longer he remains there, the stronger he becomes, with all the boosts disappearing as he leaves.
Enhanced Awareness: Scorpion is capable of tracking targets that are far away. This proved useful when he could still sense Quan Chi even though he was nowhere in his sight after Quan Chi escaped the Netherrealm and fled to Outworld.
Summoning: Scorpion is capable of summoning demonic Netherrealm minions that can attack and hold the enemy in place. They can also self-destruct, and the resulting explosion vaporizes the enemy's flesh out of the skeleton. He also has the ability to summon giant flaming skulls that can fly and shoot explosive projectiles and breathe fire.
Necromancy: With the Shirai Ryu now resurrected by the Elder Gods in an undead state, he is capable of summoning them to aid him in battle. These ninjas can summon hellfire below their opponent and often fight in numbers.
Demon Fire: Scorpion summons hellfire under his opponent to scorch them.
Fire Ball: If long range combat is necessary, Scorpion can shoot a ball of hellfire from his palms. To psyche out the opponent, he can also delay or cancel its release.
Flame Aura: Scorpion surrounds himself in flames, stunning any enemies caught in the aura upon creation. Anyone near Scorpion while the aura is up will be slowly consumed by his flames.
Toasty!: Scorpion rips off his mask to show his burning skull, then he breathes hellfire on the opponent to incinerate them. It is hot enough to vaporize enemies to dust.
Takedown: Scorpion slips onto his side, diving under attacks as he uses his legs to trip an opponent.
Backflip Kick: Scorpion performs a backflip, igniting his feet with hellfire as he kicks the opponent in the jaw.
Spine Rip: To finish off foes, Scorpion sometimes rips off the enemy's head, taking the spine with it.
The extent and potentiality of Hanzo as an esteemed pyromancer may have been undermined, simply because he was a feared ninja and a martial artist even before his resurrection as a Hellspawn spectre and mastered his kunai, when the real world equivalent (rope dart) is extremely difficult to even to properly wield.
13. Have you ever used your power for petty and/or selfish (or silly) reasons?
At the first Mortal Kombat Tournament, after defeating Cyrax and Sektor, Scorpion was confronted by his nemesis, Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero showed great disrespect to Scorpion and his clan's memory, stating "To hell with your clan!", which enraged the ninja specter, who answered Sub-Zero with "No... To Hell with YOU!", and immediately took both of them to the Netherrealm, where they engaged in Mortal Kombat. Scorpion emerged victorious and decided to spare Sub-Zero's life, only to have Quan Chi appear, ordering Scorpion to kill Sub-Zero. Remembering his bargain with Raiden as the Thunder God saw the future consisting of Scorpion killing Sub-Zero, and the latter's rebirth as Noob Saibot, urged Scorpion to defeat but not kill Sub-Zero. Scorpion at first refused to do so until Raiden promised him that he would make a request to the Elder Gods to bring the Shirai Ryu back to the realm of mortals, but only if Sub-Zero remained alive. Scorpion contemplated Raiden's offer of bringing his clan back to the world of the living, and eventually looked towards Raiden and silently nodded his consent. Raiden nodded back, and left, leaving the specter to think on this new turn of events.
When given the chance to do so, Scorpion refused, stating that Sub-Zero had been defeated and no further bloodshed was required. Knowing that the specter would not kill Sub-Zero unless he was provoked, Quan Chi conjured images of the Lin Kuei slaughter of the Shirai Ryu. The entire event was shown to Scorpion; his village was swallowed by flames, many Shirai Ryu clansmen were struck down by a rain of arrows while others were decapitated by Lin Kuei assassins, and more were run through by katanas from horseback riders and by arrows from archer marksmen, among them Sub-Zero.
Another image was magically conjured by the sorcerer. It showed Scorpion's wife (Harumi) and infant son (Satoshi) huddled in a corner of their home during the Lin Kuei attack. The house's door slid open to reveal Sub-Zero, with a Katana in hand. Unsheathing it, and unaffected by the cries of Scorpion's wife, Sub-Zero brought the blade down. The vision faded and Sub-Zero, badly wounded as he was, was on his feet holding a hand up in mercy, telling Scorpion that was not him. Enraged and reneging on his deal with Raiden, Scorpion ripped the mask from his head, revealing a skull engulfed in flames of pure hatred. Back in the throne room of Shang Tsung, Scorpion reappeared and Shang Tsung smiled in anticipation. Wordlessly, Scorpion held up a scorched skull with the spinal cord attached. The ninja specter had killed the Lin Kuei assassin Sub-Zero, rendering his deal with Raiden null. Head hung low, Scorpion dropped the skull onto the floor and with a loud scream, burst into flames and disappeared.
(aka the MK9 madness, but justifiably understandable as Scorpion was manipulated by Quan Chi).

The questions raised in MK11′s story mode:
So here's everything as it came up in order, in my mind just as I was thinking of things, SUPER heavy spoilers ahead, I just want the fan consensus, please help a confused fan get his bearings, why does everyone praise this story mode when I'm just seeing more holes than a cheese grater? 1. If Gods are immune to Kronika's time tampering, How does she stop Shinnok's blood, which was still pouring from his neck, from flowing on that table? I know this one may be a bit nitpicky but that's just a little one that sticks out and is very visually present. 2. Where do the Kollector's people come from? Probably Outworld but pulling yet another species from thin air for that realm is kinda cheap, okay? 3. Why does everyone from the past look so different from how they did in MK9? It's like jarringly different, especially when Kung Lao JUST supposedly beat down the deadly alliance, something that is only established to happen in the reboot timeline. So what happened there? (Other cosmetic changes would take too long to point out individually, so I won't.) 4. Follow up, there must be a pretty big time gap for Johnny, Sonya, and Jax, because Jax has his mech arms but in the MK2 ark of MK9, he had to be rushed out of Outworld because Ermac blew his real arms off. 5. Follow up 2, why does Jax seem to have deaged? In MK9 he looked to be about thirty+ Whereas here he looks like a really big Twenty-something, his arms are even different. So what happened there? 6. Why does Dark Raiden vanish? The game throws out the explanation that "Immortals" operate on a different timescale, more or less, but if he's unaffected by other time distortions, how was he pulled forward in the first place? 7. Why aren't more people from either side, including Smoke, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, Reptile, Ermac, Goro, Mileena, and Kintaro, ALL OF WHOM (Save for Smoke) are Loyal to Shao Kahn, not also summoned into the arena? And "She can only summon people who are still alive" isn't a workable answer because of Baraka, Skarlet and Shao Kahn himself. She later says that she's finding people not happy with the course of history, but I doubt two of the most ambitious characters in the series (The Deadly alliance) would be all that happy about being dead. Nor, I'd wager, would Kintaro or Goro, form the prideful warrior race of dragon people? 8. Why is future Erron Black completely mute? Yeah. In every scene he's in (a few different ones in the coliseum) he never says anything but past Erron has loads of dialogue. 9. How does Raiden know about there being other Temporal nonsense going on elsewhere in not just the realm he's in, but Earthrealm? I know he's Earthrealm's protector but how in the high heaven does he know? 10.As a Little one: How is it that past Johnny is sitting on the other side of the room looking at his nails and then is immediately walking by Sonya and Jax with future Johnny? She was looking in kind of the same direction but how quickly did this guy get up to pull that off? 11.Raiden says he's been getting the premonitions for "MONTHS" But MK9 established pretty roundly that he only got them night one of the 10th tournament. Now, by the time of the MK2 ark in MK9, no more than a week or two could have passed, at least as presented, so how does that make any sense? (I will elaborate if asked but this is already long enough) 12. Why does past Jade have an English accent and why does Revenant Jade not? (Other voice inconsistencies from within this trilogy would take to long to point out, so again, this is just persistent for all of them.) 13. The Cyber Lin Kuei (Who I will call "Tekunin" from here on out because I just like that better) are still a thing, Kronika pulled Sektor into the present too, I can buy that. But why not also try and recruit another realm like Seido? Imagine having Hotaru and the help of his forces. It'd make for some cool scenes, especially at the end when all the Oni are fighting Raiden's army, it'd make things a lot more chaotic, which would look cooler. Why not Chaos realmers? Zaterrans? Vampires? Centaurs? Kytinn? She brought the Tarkatans back completely so how hard would any of these other virtually extinct armies be harder to bring back and sway to her side in comparison? What about the Red Dragon? 14. Raiden apparently knows some of the history of this altered timeline which just makes me wonder how much he could realistically be briefed on, especially when he reacts with shock when he finds out that Sub-zero is friends with Hanzo Hasashi. And yes, the Cyber Initiative was a thing in MK9 but Sektor wasn't the grandmaster when that was going on or when Raiden and co were pulled from time. So what does he know and not know? And why did no one think "That crazy fire ninja is on our side" Was worthwhile info? 15. Why isn't Noob just the past one? He straight up says that he survived the soulnado, not that he's a different version. He never showed up live in the comics so it makes zero sense for him to have full stop survived. 16. How does ripping out two bundles of wire "Reformat" anything? 17. Future Kano references the idea of the Black Dragon being on top of "Not just the black market, Every market." What does that even mean? Is there gonna be a black dragon funded super corporation? That'd be cool, TBH. Shame that's never elaborated on. 18. When Kronika freezes time, is it only local? Or does it hit an entire Realm? Because in the scene where she's talking with Future Jax, and come to think of it, the one with Shinnok's head, What the hell is her bubble of influence? 19. Jade mentions Sheeva "Respecting Kitana's opinion more than anyone else's." Where, At all, in either timeline was that ever represented? Because up to now, if memory serves, their only real interactions were Sheeva telling Kitana to suck it up and die with honor in MK9. 20. What up with Jade's Retcon into being Kotal's girl? It's just kinda weird. 21. When and how did Revenant jade learn to control giant bugs? 22. What is Cetrion even the god of? Raiden, and later Kitana, mention she's a god of Virtue but why then is she able to control the Earth? "Elder god" Maybe but Raiden in the OG timeline got that title at the end of MK 4, then stepped down and he was no more powerful for it but that seems to be what happened with Cetrion, IDK. 23. How far back did Kronika have to pull Past Kano and Kabal from? Because Kabal is still apparently working for the black dragon, whatever age she got him from, but he still has his post-burn super speed. 24. What was the point of blowing Sektor up other than to just lose a major power player for your own side? 25. (Ultimate nitpick on this one) Why is Skarlet and one line from Baraka speaking Tarkatan the only ones that get subtitles? Why not just either A. Say it in English, which they seem to understand enough of, or B. Just not add these translations if they aren't translating the rest of the Tarkatan speech we see? What is the point? "So we understand it." I think you're underestimating people's ability to get the concept of "They said a thing, they did a thing, that must be what was said." 26. In the fight with the Tarkatans, How did Liu Kang and Kung Lao have the time to change back into monk clothes? Where was Kung Lao keeping his hat? 27. What the hell was Shao's last name? at a time "Kahn" was probably just the answer until it became retconned to mean "Emperor of Outworld." But what was his full name? I'm honestly curious, less of a nitpick, more of a "Hm." 28. Why does Future Kano feel a hit to the gut? I understand Johnny's Scar in one way or another, but a hit to the gut, painful as it is, especially when he's showing no sign of feeling any of Past Kano's minor injuries, shouldn't feel like anything after 25ish years. 29. Why does Future Kano have a delayed reaction to "Death by Missing hunk of brain?" The wound instantly manifests but he stands and seems to try to talk for a few seconds before collapsing into sand. Wouldn't it make more sense for him to rot into nothing really fast? Then again, Time travel is always a nightmare in any media that attempts to talk about it. 30. How does Revenant Kabal mistake Past Jax for Future Jax? 31. When Scorpion saves Hanzo, why didn't he just split D'vorah's skull with one strike? Two in a pinch? If he's putting enough force behind it to cut her stabby limbs off, or just generally be a useful assassin, why not just go for the neck even? (This one was answered on a reddit post I made, so whatever) 32. Why doesn't Scorpion just surrender when he goes to the Fire Gardens? Wouldn't it be best to just sit down inoffensively and wait for people to show up? Even if Sub-Zero wants to fight, he could just put his hands up and start disarming himself, Not beat the Holy Snot out of Sub-Zero. 33. If Kronika can just appear out of thin air, freeze all the humans in a given location, and pluck one from the ground, why not just use one of her minions like Geras or Cetrion to help kill them all while they're frozen? 34. Kronika mentions "Playing out all possible Scenarios." How many resets have you done, lady? Millions, I'd wager. How has your utter defeat not come up at least one other time? 35. Where are revenant Nightwolf, Sindel, Smoke, and Stryker during all of this? I find it deathly strange that Kronika couldn't find a use for FOUR undead super warriors. At least three and a bloke with military and police backgrounds that make things like strategy a bit easier, probably. 36.Kronika just MAKES a massive battleship or two, so what was the point of Cetrion building the bridge or asking Kharon to help in the first place? Just make a boat. Barring that, D'vorah mentioned that all she had to do was render Kharon unable to help Raiden's forces during Kharon's introduction. Why not just kidnap him, load him onto a boat, tie him to an anchor, and then just drop him in the blood sea? Rather than this "Slowly torture" BS. 37. How does Future Jax yeet himself onto the upper deck of one of the ferries? 38. Frost says that Raiden "Ignored her, her entire life." Since when is she the Tsundere of the MK universe? Or more seriously: Is this a line that only makes sense when you read the comics? 39. Why would the Tekunin be rigged to Frost's brainwaves? One good conk upside the noggin, or stab, shot, what have you, and what? Do they all drop dead? 40. Why does Past Kang live through having his own soul stolen, something that is always instantly fatal throughout the series? 41. How does Revenant Liu Kang yeet himself off a small boat and onto one of the ferries full stop?
And that's everything, any answers are appreciated. Am I being nitpicky with a few of these? Probably, Do I care? Not so much. I’m just getting sick of people praising this story when THIS MANY holes are present.

Film Review - Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge
Carrying on my between-series break of film reviews, I’m sticking with the world of Mortal Kombat but going back a year and from live-action to animated home release, and the first film adaptation of the game series to land an age certification of 18, or R-rated to go by US standards. This is my review of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge.
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
In Japan, Shirai Ryu grandmaster Hanzo Hasashi and his young son Satoshi are ambushed on their way home by several ninjas from the rival Lin Kuei clan. Hasashi kills them all after discovering that the Lin Kuei have slaughtered the rest of the Shirai Ryu, including his wife Harumi. The Lin Kuei's Grandmaster Sub-Zero appears, uses his freezing abilities to restrain Hanzo in ice, and then murders Satoshi. He then impales Hanzo through the neck with an icicle, killing him. Deep below in the depths of the Netherrealm, Hasashi is mysteriously resurrected and meets with the sorcerer Quan Chi, who persuades Hanzo to fight for him in the Mortal Kombat tournament so that he can exact his revenge on Sub-Zero. Hanzo agrees, dubbing himself Scorpion.
Meanwhile, the thunder god Raiden and the Shaolin monk Liu Kang make preparations to defend Earthrealm by participating in the Mortal Kombat tournament, hosted by the aging warlock Shang Tsung. The tournament's victor will battle Goro to decide the fate of Earthrealm. The pair are accompanied by out-of-work Hollywood actor Johnny Cage and Special Forces agent Sonya Blade, with both having their own reasons for participating: Sonya is in pursuit of Black Dragon crime syndicate leader Kano, and Cage believes that he is participating in a film project.
Upon arrival on Shang Tsung's island, Scorpion attempts to steal Shinnok's amulet on Quan Chi's orders, but Raiden persuades him not to follow through on the deal. Meanwhile, Cage, Sonya and Liu Kang witness Sonya's partner Jackson "Jax" Briggs being grievously injured by the tournament's champion Goro until Raiden intervenes. During the course of the tournament, Cage barely claims victory over Baraka before realizing he is in an actual tournament, Sonya successfully garrottes Reptile, and Kang fights Kitana, emerging as the winner when she yields. In an attempt to stop the Earthrealm heroes, Kano has his assassins infiltrate the island to kill them, but they are all killed by Scorpion. While the others are attempting to fight Kano, Sub-Zero appears and helps deal with the assassins, but a vengeful Scorpion attacks him and tackles him off a bridge into a spike pit, impaling them both and killing Sub-Zero. Cage and Sonya pursue Kano in order to rescue Jax while Kang rushes to Shang Tsung's throne room.
Quan Chi appears before Scorpion and reveals that he was directly responsible for the slaughter of the Shirai Ryu, having disguised himself as Sub-Zero and manipulated the Lin Kuei into doing his bidding and that the real Sub-Zero had no part in the massacre. Enraged, Scorpion removes himself from the spike to exact revenge. At the climax of the tournament, Shang Tsung is revealed to have already known of Quan Chi's true intentions from the beginning, and Liu Kang almost suffers the same fate as Jax during his match with Goro. However, he is saved when Scorpion kills Goro with his kunai, while Cage, Sonya and Jax successfully kill Kano. Shang Tsung attempts to have Scorpion fight Kang, but the spectre takes the sorcerer hostage and willingly forfeits his status as a fighter, securing Kang's position as the victor of the tournament. After Tsung retreats to Outworld, the island begins to collapse, with the Earthrealm heroes evacuating to a nearby boat, while Scorpion succeeds in killing Quan Chi in combat before joining his family and clan in the afterlife. Later on the boat, Raiden then tells Lui Kang that it was not his destiny to defeat Shang Tsung but to defeat Shao Kahn.
In the aftermath, Shang Tsung is tortured by Shao Kahn for his failure before being ordered to make preparations for the invasion of Earthrealm.
Review:
If there’s one thing I’ve come to notice about Warner Brothers, it’s that their animation department invariably does better adaptational work than those who make their live-action films.  The DC Animated Movie Universe being a more cohesive and true-to-source continuity that the DC Extended Universe that is the subject of live-action cinema releases is evidence to that effect.  It’s further evidenced by the fact that this film actually does a far better job of adapting the Mortal Kombat game series than the live action film that came out this year did, and I’m certainly looking forward to see the next MK animated film that’s due out at the end of this month.
So, as I noted when reviewing the live-action reboot of the Mortal Kombat films, there are three key elements a Mortal Kombat film has to nail; the tournament that is the basis for the games being included and given sufficient exposition for new audience members to understand what’s going on, a respectable Fatality count to honour what Mortal Kombat is, and accurate representations of the major long-term characters.  Scorpion’s Revenge certainly does better than the recent live-action reboot on the first part.  Weighing in with 30 minutes less runtime, this animated film still provides just enough background information on the tournament for anyone to understand what is doing on, but again there’s not much context on why Outworld rule of Earth is a bad thing.  The title plot within the film for Scorpion carries more relatable emotional stakes than the plot for Raiden and his band of champions.
On the second point, the kill count, it seems I mis-spoke slightly with regards to this animated film beating the live-action remake on the quantity of main character fatalities.  However, it does surpass the live-action films in the quality of these killing moments, which is where the film’s 18 certificate comes in. Not only does the film pay homage to the game with x-ray shots of certain moves, but the gore factor is ramped up so high that if anyone had tried doing this in live action, I’m honestly not sure the film would see the light of day.  It’s a more brutally graphic representation of the game lore than anyone else has dared to attempt, but it’s very much what the games have become as graphics have improved.
The film also has a sense of humour about it that ties back into the game series to a degree, largely represented through the character of Johnny Cage, and I think that’s also a good move because not only is that necessary to off-set the violence and gore at times, but it also just adds to the idea that the film makers are really trying to respect the source material.  This then brings us to the film’s third area it has to nail; representing the characters well.  Quite honestly, the film does a superb job in this respect.  Scorpion and Sub-Zero actually look recognisable and there’s enough design similarity between them and the briefly-seen Reptile to honour their past as re-colours of each other, yet at the same time seeing them as distinct characters.
The film also makes better use of Scorpion than the live-action film did, as it better acknowledges that he is ultimately the most popular character in the franchise, and I think even if this wasn’t a Scorpion origins story, this film would still have given him more screen-time than the live-action version did.  This film also adds a bit of an origin for his codename, which is a wonderful touch.  Throw in excellent performances by a well-selected voice cast and the film is almost perfect.
So, where are the flaws in this film?  Well, aside from there still not being quite enough exposition to really understand the stakes of the tournament itself, there also appears to be virtually no organisation to the whole thing.  After the initial one-on-one bouts, it seems to just be a giant free-for-all and the first one to reach Goro and beat him wins.  Given that the game itself is inevitably more structured because you have to go level-by-level with your chosen fighter, I would expect a bit shown, even if only in a montage, of a round-by-round progression of warriors to a final bout with Goro.  Maybe that’s just me being drawn to organisational structures that I know and understand like those of major international football competitions and over-thinking things, I don’t know.  However, some evidence of a more orderly round-by-round structure, maybe occasionally forcing the Earthrealm fighters to fight each other and the same with fighters from Outworld, etc. that to me would improve the film a lot.
Otherwise, this film is very good and does better to represent the Mortal Kombat games with less screen time than the recent live-action reboot did.  End score for this film is 8 out of 10.

Repeatedly use his special attacks and Moloch will easily be defeated.
Versus Mode Stage Select
Press R before either player chooses a character to get a screen with a screenshot of a stage. Then, press Left or Right to change it to the desired stage.
Victory Pose Select
Each character has three end-of-battle poses. Perform the following when the “Finish Him/Her” message appears. Note: If you run out of time performing your fatality or if you end the match with your weapon, your character will automatically perform the pose of the last stance he or she was in.
1: Strike your opponent in your character's first form.2. Strike your opponent in your character's second form.3. Execute your characters fatality.
Recover Password
If you forgot your password in your profile, you can get it back by using the following trick. Start a new profile with any name, then press “Done”. Pick an icon, and after you are done, it will give you a password. The password will be the same as your old one. Copy the one you just obtained and delete the new profile. Enter the password with your old profile and it should work.
Attack opponents before “Fight” appears
Unplug the controller during the loading screen, then put it back in. You can now attack before starting the match.
Play As Blaze
Successfully complete all missions in Konquest mode for all fighters. Then, highlight Raiden at the character selection screen and hold Down.
Play As Mokap
Successfully complete all missions in Konquest mode for all fighters. Then, highlight Cyrax at the character selection screen and hold Down.
Play As Cyrax Easier
You would have to have at least 462 Ruby Koins and open Krypt PD (to get 1056 Platinum Koins ) and get the rest of 3003 needed to open CN for Cyrax. You can get extra Platinum Koins in the following Krypts: FV (83 Platinum Koins needed for 243 platinum Koins); PK (157 Platinum Koins needed for 475 Platinum Koins); WS (44 Onyx Koins needed for 165 Platinum Koins); and NG (63 Sapphire Koins needed for 252 Platinum Koins).
Play As Raiden Easier
Open the FN Krypt first to get 1800 of the 3300 Koins that are needed before opening the XG Krypt to unlock Raiden.
Random Character Select
Highlight Shang Tsung (for player one) or Quan Chi (for player two) at the character selection screen, then hold Up + Start.
Kenshi: Immunity To Sonya’s Kiss Of Death Move
Since Kenshi is blind, Sonya’s Kiss Of Death move has no affect on him.
Kenshi: Fatality Restrictions
When playing as Kenshi, his fatality will not work against Cyrax, Johnny Cage or himself. Note: If you do his fatality on Kano, only one eye will pop out.
Kenshi: Defeating Moloch
Repeatedly use this long, but very good combo: Press 2, 2, 2, Away, 1, Forward, 1, 4.
Shang Tsung: Defeating Moloch
Get the fighting weapon out and press X, Y, A, Away,, A.
Scorpion: Combos
This combo is fairly easy to do; it is only a series of repeated attacks. Have him in the Hapkido stance. Then, start the combo with 2, 2, 4. Repeat the process until your opponent is defeated. The combo is somewhat weak but its an easy combo to execute. This combo also works well against Moloch.
Scorpion: Defeating Moloch
No matter who you are using to defeat the Deadly Alliance in arcade mode, purposely die and pick a new player. Choose Scorpion. It is much easier to defeat Moloch with Scorpion than any other player. Keep using his best Ninja Sword combo on him repeatedly.
Scorpion: Easy Win
Take out the ninja sword and repeatedly press R.
Sonya: Defeating Moloch
Pull her 10-hit style Branch combo continuously. Once finished with the first combo, immediately switch back to her initial style and repeat. As long as your button hitting is precise, you will constantly be in motion and he will not be able to retaliate.
Acid Bath Stage: Damage Opponent
Get your opponent near the two giant statues in the background. The statues will spit acid out, hurting your opponent. Note: Do not get too close, or you will also get hurt.
Easy Wins
Note: This trick can only be done with Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Li Mei, Cyrax, Shang Tsung, Frost, Reptile, or Kitana. You can impale your weapon into your opponent, making them lose life every second. The move varies, and with some you have to press the D-pad and the button. To find the correct move, press Start, select “Move List”, then look under your weapon and it will say “Impale”. All of them have to be close range, but Kitana can throw her steel fans. However if it hits and they block or dodge it, you cannot use it again until the end of the match.Use the following trick to get easy wins in arcade mode under the maximum difficulty setting. Choose Quan Chi or Nitara, then repeatedly use their throw attack on the opponent. Then quickly stand over them and continuously tap Throw. Try to time it so that you throw them just as they are getting up. When doing this, you should be able to defeat any opponent (except Moloch) with little to no effort. Note: You will not always grab them with the throw before they begin attacking; you may have to keep blocking until they finish their combo or move, thus leaving them open for a string of throws. Using Nitara is much easier and usually results in a flawless victory.
No Fatalities
You cannot do fatalities if you have the blood level set to “Off”.
FMV Introductions
Allow the game to enter demo mode to see the FMV of the first Video Teaser from Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance with Scorpion performing a Kata. Other characters (Kitana, Quan Chi, and Frost) will perform a Kata as well. After Blaze is unlocked, he will perform a Kata also. After Mokap is unlocked, he will be in a demo fight.
Monk Movement
Remain idle long enough during Konquest mode and the “monk” will turn around and shrug his shoulders at you.

For the ship opinion bingo: Syzoth/Ashrah
(I've never even played any Mortal Kombat, but I'm curious.)
Tumblr media
tagging @ironladders
Tumblr media
they are canon though unfortunately you dont really get much development for them in the actual game. so like if you try and search up cute moments with them or anything like that, the best you are going to find is their pre-fight dialogue which is pretty cute or pre-fight dialogue they have with other characters where they talk about their relationship. and because of that, you really do have to use your imagination to understand how it works. we have no idea canonically how they came to be a couple, but when you take both of their backstories into account, they make a lot of sense imo.
ashrah is a demon from the mk version of hell, and she has essentially been enslaved by a human who learned enough dark magic to gain access to that hell and enslave ashrah and her sisters to all do his bidding. she had a realization while out seeing the realms that there was more to life than what the netherrealm and quan chi (the human i was talking about) had to offer her and that if she just devoted her life to absolving herself and becoming a beacon of justice, that way of life could be hers as well. two of her sisters, still under quan chis spell, were forced to go after her and she had no choice but to kill them in self defense, which is something that hurt her greatly. but now shes fighting on the side of good and she strives to do her best to defend humanity so that she could one day be absolved and essentially become a human herself, in spite of the fact that there are those who look down on her for being a demon or doubt that she is up to the task.
then you have syzoth, a guy who comes from a race of giant lizards called zaterrans. but unlike the rest of them, syzoth has the ability to shift between being a giant lizard and being a human passing dude. his race of people are treated with prejudice, but then his own people also treat him with prejudice themselves because of his unique ability, leaving him an outcast who was run out of his home. the best he could do to support himself was join a traveling carnival. since then though he was able to get married and have a child. but unfortunately for him, a human by the name of shang tsung wanted to study his unique ability so that he could have it for himself, and the way he decided to do it was by abducting his wife and son and holding their safety above his head, and forcing him to be a test subject in his lab and then to become his enslaved labhand. it was discovered during the mk1 story that syzoths family had actually been dead for a long time and he had been lied to to keep him subservient. it was also discovered that quan chi and shang tsung were actually partners in a plot to dominate all realms.
i give you these backstories because they are the reason i feel like ashrah and syzoth work very well together. they are both people who are looked down upon by the rest of society for being who they are, they were both people who were enslaved and taken advantage of, the people who enslaved each of them were in on the same catastrophic plot, and they both lost family in the process of all this happening. to me, it makes sense that they would be together because they both understand what the other went through in a way that no one else in the story does. but you also find that they differ in very interesting ways as well. ashrah wants nothing more than to absolve herself and become a human, but syzoth, despite how much his people hate him, is very proud of being zaterran and wouldnt trade his identity for anything. their trajectories through life are so similar but they arrived at such different conclusions about their sense of self and their identities, i think that they could each learn so much from one another and grow together in interesting ways. the understanding and comfort they find in one another but then also the fact that they also show unabashed support for the others goals and dreams as well, they just mesh so well with one another.
now to touch on pre-fight dialogue, despite his feelings about his own identity and not really understanding wanting to be a human, he has made it clear in the pre-fight that he would do anything to stay by her side and help her achieve her goal of absolution. the literal god of that universe is a playable character in mk1 and he tries to steer syzoth away from ashrah in pre-fight dialogue, and he quite literally tells that god to mind his business.
meanwhile syzoths goal is to bridge the gap between the humans and zaterrans, and he is doing it as the empress of his realm's emmissary. it was discovered toward the end of the story that the zaterran rulers are corrupted and that there are actually others who had his unique ability who have been purged, and he has made it his goal to investigate this. ashrah can be heard in the pre-fight dialogue with the nobility pleading with them to help his cause, which shows that she is just as invested in his goals as he is in hers. they honestly have the makings of a great ship, if they could just lol show us what it looks like in the story i would be over the moon

Mortal Kombat Sequel: What Should Happen Next
https://ift.tt/3sT79DK
IT HAS BEGUN!
Or it will. Mortal Kombat came out and did all right for itself. The reboot has its highs and its lows, but one thing I will say it does a better job at is setting up a sequel. The 1995 original had a decent enough cliffhanger with a kaiju-sized Shao Kahn popping in and everyone ready to just kick his ass, but at the time, there weren’t too many promising places to take the sequel.
The first movie was just so front-loaded that the second didn’t have enough to rope us in. That’s why it’s probably for the best that Johnny Cage is currently being treated purely as a sequel hook. He’s the carrot on the stick meant to keep us interested in keeping this franchise going.
Also there’s still a tournament. As someone who has seen every adaptation of Mortal Kombat (outside of the Live Tour, but once I get this time machine finished…), I can understand why they would want to try something new with the narrative. Treating everything as a big prelude to the sequel, which will actually do the tournament, is a fine enough option. Just as long as they deliver. Oh, and try to make the tournament make sense! Both the original and the Scorpion’s Revenge animated film just make up the rules as they go along. I want some goddamn brackets!
So here are some other things we’d like to see in the Mortal Kombat sequel.
A Johnny Cage Who Can Fight
Obviously. Johnny Cage is Warner Brothers’ chance to get a big name actor in there. Since he was so good in the animated movie, I thought about Joel McHale getting jacked up for the role, but he’d be in his 50s by then. I know WWE’s Miz is also campaigning for the role, but while that would be adorable, I simply want a Johnny Cage who not only has charisma, but can do some kind of martial arts.
Linden Ashby was able to pull it off, but the less our new Hollywood egomaniac has to be carried by editing and his opponents, the better. Really, just go with Scott Adkins.
Noob Saibot and Sub-Zero II
I know Cole Young isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the sequel can completely redeem his existence by using the second Sub-Zero as his rival and counterpart. In the games, the Sub-Zero/Scorpion stuff happened in the present day, so Kuai Liang was Bi-Han’s brother and took up the Sub-Zero mantle in-between the first two entries. He ended up being a more honorable warrior and became one of the series’ main heroes.
Considering the new movie’s version of Bi-Han is—for an unexplained reason—borderline immortal, his successor wouldn’t be his brother but likely his descendant. Weirdly, it would be a descendant that he would have coexisted with, but sure. Therefore you get a new Sub-Zero who is to the original what Cole Young is to Scorpion.

Mortal Kombat: 15 Most Powerful Characters
By Gavin Jasper
Shang Tsung hinted at bringing back some of his dead henchmen, so Bi-Han will likely return as the insidious Noob Saibot. On paper, that’s a tag team match of bloodline vs. bloodline. Except there’s some good drama in there if you have the new Sub-Zero stray from what the original wants him to do.
Kitana and Edenia
Probably one of the stranger choices in Mortal Kombat was to include Mileena as one of the flunkies and kill her off when there hasn’t been a single mention of Kitana. Having Mileena mean nothing is a mistake that both movie continuities have made.
We’re probably another movie away before Shao Kahn becomes a major player in this franchise. He might have as much a role in the sequel as Thanos does in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Kitana can show up though, both as his assassin and/or his betrayer, giving us a better idea of what he’s all about without actually having him appear.
Also, with Kung Lao gone, Liu Kang is in desperate need of connecting to someone. Giving him a Juliet to his Romeo would be welcome.
Recognizable Backgrounds
The Mortal Kombat series is known for so many cool and unique places for the characters to fight. So it was a little disappointing that the new movie featured such locations as a sand pit, the insides of a crappy house, and a frozen-over locker room. Even the use of the Pit meant nothing as nobody got knocked into the spikes.
Give us the Dead Pool or the Living Forest. Or that one stage with the portals in the background while the shadow priests float around. Anything from Mortal Kombat II. Get some of that rad Outworld real estate.
We’re Going to Need a New Heavy
Throwing Goro in for the sake of having Goro was a ballsy move for the movie, and probably a foolish one. Goro is more than just a brick house of an enemy to go through. He’s the heart and soul of the first Mortal Kombat game and its tournament. He stopped mattering after the fact, but in the storyline of the first game and first movie adaptation, he was the gigantic threat. He was the irresistible force that everyone was too afraid to talk about because he might hear you.
The 2021 movie proceeded to use Goro for the sake of scaring Cole into growing his mutant power shirt before Cole brutally murdered him. Sure, he can come back in the sequel, but what’s the point? He’s lost all of his mystique. He’s no longer the scary giant.
There are options for replacements. They could use Kintaro, although he’d be more of the same. Perhaps Motaro? Eh, centaurs are too cumbersome to work. They might have to bring in someone like Moloch or even Blaze in just to give us the necessary moment of, “Whoa, what the HELL is that?!”
Bring Back Kano
Just… bring him back. If Sub-Zero #1 is obviously returning as Noob Saibot, then there’s no reason why Shang Tsung or the Black Dragon, or Quan Chi, or Shinnok can’t just resurrect Kano and put a metal plate where his wound was. The biggest mistake of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was cheating us out of the best performances from the first movie. So please, Warner Bros., give us some more Josh Lawson.
A resurrected Kano would not only bring back the fantastic comic relief, but he’d be the ultimate wild card. Maybe he can find redemption? Maybe he’ll still be a total bastard and work for the villains. Maybe they could play up fellow Black Dragon member Jarek’s in-game storyline where he’s so freaked out by the threat of Shinnok (or whoever) that he knows that there is no monetary gain he can get out of the situation, and no reason to do anything but save his skin by helping save the world.
Or maybe Shang Tsung morphs into Kano and gets hit on the head so hard that he forgets how to turn back to normal and is stuck spending the rest of the movie as a wise-cracking Australian. I’m spit-balling here.
