Just seen someone call Maria selfish for leaving Tommy in TLOU2 when he needed her the most and I’m like???? Did you see him in the farmhouse, that’s a man who is obsessed with revenge and she’s probably given him ample chance to get over it but 18 months later he’s still obsessing over Abby. Maria (and Dina) were both more than justified in cutting ties with Tommy/Ellie for their own sakes. If Tommy and Ellie are too far gone and won’t allow themselves to be helped, their partners are more than justified in eventually making the decision to focus on their own mental health because I can guarantee the post-Seattle Tommy was not easy to live with.

Having said that, hope both couples make up so TLOU3 can just be the remaining members of the extended Miller family all living happily.

But seriously, why is it in any form of fiction or real-life, the woman is ‘selfish’ for actually putting her own well-being above someone who doesn’t want to be helped.

I wanna start writing Joel Miller fics but I don't know where or how to start I hate this so much

As previously mentioned here, in my trafficstuck AU, the players are all adult trolls in the present day. Given how troll society functions, they can’t stay on Alternia & at various times, they all take off in various spaceships to wander the universe. I have spent way too much time thinking about how this would be arranged, so here’s the first two of six ships to leave Alternia. (Note: The crews have a tendency to shuffle around as time goes on; this is just how they are arranged after they take off but before Last Life.)

Ship 1

The first to take off, this ship carries Lizzie & Joel. Lizzie is a fuchsia blood & spent most of her life focused on the point when Her Imperious Condescension would decide Lizzie was old enough to be too much a threat to leave alive. Then, they would have their epic showdown that would, almost inevitably, end with Lizzie losing the fight & her life.

Joel was very much not down with this plan. Lizzie stubbornly insisted that she had to at least try to win, to take The Condesce down, but eventually Joel convinced her that, at very least, she deserved a more even playing field & to have the fight on her own terms. They decided the best way to do this was, well before their cohort was meant to take off, they would hack Lizzie’s battle ship & escape off planet, buying some time as they went into hiding.

Few of the players knew that Lizzie & Joel had this plan until a while after it went down. Joel first confided in Griann that they needed a grub that could get into the battleship’s systems. Griann suggested Joel reach out to Tangoh, who had grown the game grub for 3rd Life & who Grian insisted would be sympathetic to their cause & not rat them out. After a lot of dithering, Joel contacted Tangoh & Tangoh happily grew & coded a grub for them that could hack into a ship system & basically nuke any tracking that might be on it. In exchange, of course, Lizzie used her position to acquire some extremely rare & expensive tech bits for Tangoh. No questions were asked by either side.

Joel & Lizzie made a slightly rocky, but successful, escape on the hacked battleship, along with hefty amount of supplies. Big down side of their ship is that it can’t sustain FTL very long, as it’s so huge it’d really require psionics to maintain that kind of velocity. But really. They’re not in a rush to get anywhere, just wandering the more distant, empty parts of the universe for long stretches & making port extremely rarely at extremely secluded planets.

Ship 2

Troll life sucks. It sucks for kids, it sucks for adults, & it sucks more the lower on the hemospectrum you are. It especially sucks if you are a gold blood with psionics, given you can pretty much expect to get shoved in some high blood’s ship as an engine. It was that or get culled. So yeah, Impuls had a pretty grim fate to look forward to. Luckily, his moirail, Skizzl, would never let that happen.

With the help of their friend, Tangoh (& the parts Lizzie helped Tangoh acquire), they built a ship & the three of them took off together several perigees after Joel & Lizzie. Since then, they’ve been on the move for the most part, avoiding other Alternian ships as best they can. When they can’t avoid run ins with other trolls, Tangoh does all the talking, which makes sense because, as an indigo blood, he has the most social standing & unless they run into high bloods or royalty, he can generally talk &/or intimidate their way out of trouble. Impuls tries his best not to be around for such things, to minimize risk of being caught. If they’re taken off guard though, they will generally put up the pretense that he & Skizzl are in Tangoh’s “employ,” which usually works well as most troll’s don’t look too closely at a blue blood keeping a couple of low bloods around to take care of things for them. (The moment they’re alone again, though, Skizzl & Impuls gives Tangoh so much shit for using high blood vernacular & acting ‘all proper & shit.’ The poking of fun sometimes lasts days if Tangoh said something they deem particularly ridiculous.)

Fun fact: since they built their ship themselves, it is designed to have two operating modes: 1. It can self-propel & be steered using a navigation panel or 2. It can be controlled, entirely or partially, by Impuls. He & Tangoh teamed up to invent a, uh, less brutal method for hooking Impuls into the system, allowing him to use his psionics to take over various functions without literally being permanently melded with the ship. Given how most space travel is just ‘get a boost in a direction & coast,’ Impuls will often just jump in to set a course & let physics do the rest of the work. If they want to go really fast, like faster than light, he has to be fully controlling things as there really is no replacement for his batshit psionics in those cases. But really, his job as the ship’s helmsman is far more laid back than a psionic gold blood could hope for & he finds he quite likes it this way.

okay so here are my hybrid headcanons for Pearl and Gem because I can't get the fuckin things out of my head:

Pearl is a hare hybrid primarily but also a deific shapeshifter for various reasons. Gem is a kitsune. They are both trickster spirits.

honestly I ended up writing so much more than I intended to explain my reasoning but I stand by it xD

Pearl:

Hare- The hare has a strong association with the moon in religion and mythology. You can even see the shape of a hare in the moon. It's associated with luck and rebirth, it's a strong and fast animal, and in a lot of mythology/folklore it is a trickster too. Visually I like a hare for Pearl, the colour of it isn't too far from her hair (heheh, the hair of a hare) and the long ears would perfectly mirror the long feathered antenna people will often draw her with as a moth hybrid. The Hare is a survivor, and will make a safe home for itself.

But I also really like her situationally as a moth hybrid and as a wolf hybrid, so she has shapeshifter abilities.

Lunar Moth- I think of her as a skybling to Grian, not incidentally but intentionally. He loves his sister, he wishes for her to fly with him, to be able to follow no matter how high he perches. He is a watcher- of a sort, a deserter who regrets that choice but is still burdened with the weight of power nevertheless. He sees her, sees the wish to follow him ever higher than even her strongest leaps. He sees that potential of flight in her, and it becomes reality. She is his sister by choice but he sees the bond so it is true, and if they are related should they not both have inherited some of the same power? Her wings breathe into existence when he is present, in reality or even just in thought, and the patterns on her wings look like eyes. The view from up high is better than the ground and there is a tower she has shared with BigB, a cautious alliance strengthened by their mutual exploration of the desire to watch that has been calling to them both for a long time. For one due to the bond of a sibling, for another due to some whisps of something creeping in as he poked and prodded at other worlds. Her wings will now often unfurl around all other avians, she will join them in the sky, see all below, and try to touch the moon above that feels like home.

Wolf- I think this form developed as a defence mechanism. Something unlocked perhaps through the touch of divinity she inherited with Grian and has since nurtured and grown. Hares are associated with rebirth and she does that often. Santa Perla. Power from death and sacrifice, and love for her, because Pearl is loved. Except when she isn't. Except when loneliness crawls in and that divinity and rebirth turn sour. Alone, rejected, cold. Up in her tower looking down, seeing the joy of the others. Her wolf is her friend, her only friend. Tilly is brave and strong and her teeth are sharp. Tilly is obedient to and gentle with her, but she is not prey. Tilly is a wolf and a predator and will carve up and eat whatever and whoever she must to survive. Pearl adores and envies her, she feeds Tilly the flesh of the dead and thinks of Cleo, beloved by Scott and a friend to her too once, and she envies Cleo and Tilly both. She yearns to feed on the dead that stole her soulbound from her, to consume whatever made them enough where she was not. She builds a pack of her own but it's not enough. Her dog is still dying. She is a trickster but that's not enough anymore either. Not for this. How does prey become a predator? The loneliness is eating at her but she is faster, the first prey that she consumes as a wolf must be herself. Call it a ritual, call it divinity turning on itself. Whatever you call it it is bloody and internal and when the transformation is complete her teeth are sharp and so are her eyes, seeing all her old friends through a haze of red. She still loves the moon.

I think her wolf retreats when she feels safe and loved once more, long hare ears returning with a cheerful twitch, moth wings wrapping comfortingly around her. But what is done cannot be undone. Werewolf is the closest word but her beloved moon could never be the trigger for that horrific shift. A defence mechanism then. The red haze and the sharpened canines creeping in when needed. Santa Perla will sacrifice everything for those she loves, but if there is no one to love she will love herself, and do what she must to survive.

Gem:

General Reasoning-

I just cannot see Gem as a deer. The imagery and art is beautiful, I understand the associations, I just don't see it. The grace and nobility I see, but there is no sense of skittishness in that woman. She will stare down that which wishes to eat her and it will find her victorious. Also let's be honest CC Gem ain't as fond of the deer associations/design anymore either. I liked the fox hybrid headcanons, visually speaking it works so well with her red hair, but I have grown up with foxes living in my back garden all my life, I can't see Gem as something so mundane to be honest. A kitsune though? similar themes but more powerful. Mythic, and a real emphasis on the trickster nature which feels right. God-like powers that grow as she does, and a powerful friend and guardian as well as a trickster. They are also specifically known to be bewitching, and Gem has incredible social skills and ability to influence others, a lot of what she does in Secret Life and Among Us proves that.

Extra details-

I headcanon that the reason she originally presented as/ is still often is seen as a deer is because of her trickster spirit nature. She wished for people to see her as something different than she was, both to be perceived as less of a threat but also because it amused her in the early days. Now most of her friends are aware of her true nature, and her power, but she still occasionally will appear as a deer out of nostalgia. I also like to think she gains a new tail for each season of hermitcraft she's in and, as a kitsune, her divine abilities are what allow her to travel between worlds/SMPs, each of her tails forming a bridge to a separate SMP from hermitcraft for her. I've seen a lot about there being multiple 'types' of kitsune, and tbh I'm not sure if that's actually true or something pushed by modern fictional interpretations. I suspect it's the latter based on limited research, but I like the concept and I'm gonna roll with it a bit anyway to say that I think Gem takes on different kitsune 'types' to suit her environment/ series/ current SMP. For hermitcraft 10 she's an ocean kitsune for example.

Shiny Duo Dynamic:

I am a casual shipper of c!Pearl and c!Gem so obviously that has some influence, but even non romantically I think their dynamic is fascinating, and I really love how it works out with my head canons for them.

The most obvious point being that they're both trickster spirits, creatures that, in their associated folklore, tend to play the role of the clever creature that usually talks it's way out of being eaten, or into eating something else. Not to be a stereotypical gay but consumption as a metaphor/ expression of love and obsession is super fascinating I think. Hare!Pearl being chased and played with by Kitsune!Gem only to potentially turn around, shifting into a wolf herself, is really fun to think about, and there are a lot of parallels with that to their interactions, especially with Secret Life and now Wild Life.

Two trickster spirits, messing with each other, in a thrilling and occasionally violent cycle of eat or be eaten, each trying to outwit the other. What forms would Pearl take most around Gem, the hare chased by the hungry fox Kitsune? Or the hound wolf on the hunt? chasing after Gem in turn. Perhaps neither, perhaps she would flit around on moth wings, whispers of her divinity brushing against Gem's as they both continue to grow in power.

I've definitely spent waaay too long thinking about this for someone who almost certainly ain't gonna do any writing or drawing about it xD

I like to imagine that Ellie was a very hyper-mom before she found her footing and relaxed into her motherhood. She`s never had a mom and he`s never been one so it`s only natural that she was anxious at the beginning, trying to get every single thing right. You know like that kind of new mom that hands you a foot-long list of hyper specific rules and regulations concerning their child`s care before you even cross the threshold? Yeah, that`s Ellie. And Joel notices how stressed and tired she is and he offers to look after JJ so Ellie can take Dina on a date and relax a bit.

Problem is Ellie refuses to leave without explaining every single thing to Joel and the list is endless. And he`s amused, he remembers all too well how it felt to be a new parent and stress over your newborn AND what a mess he`s been when he had to leave Sarah for the first time. But most of all he`s just so goddamn proud of Ellie. So he wraps her in a hug, interrupting her rumbling, kisses her forehead and tells her:

“Ellie baby, the light of my life, you do remember that I`ve raised two exceptional daughters, right? I can handle one potato, I promise you.”

And then he has to physically remove her from the premises.

shifted gears like alright after the [lucifer the mysteries please] centered approach that found mostly Other Stuff, centering [blade gunnblade please], and already have found something new but in the "possibly inaccurate & probably irrelevant even if otherwise" vein as a review read through the wayback machine says: "perhaps none moreso than the gun toting android Blade Gunblade, perfectly embodied by Asia Kate Dillon. They even get an awesome heart-wrenching backstory." which is so far the singular mention that blade gunnblade is an android, however, reviewers can Just Say Things, so. i believe the blade gunnblade full backstory clip that's available is from pre 2015's run at the pit, & rather a previous run as serials at the flea (and the prop & setpiece differences if it was simply an alex seife understudy performance from 2015 would be: inexplicable) but i have to imagine that blade's peak tragic backstory ft. murdered wife & child would be very similar, & i guess it would be funny if they were just out & about living their ordinary life with a family like that while also an android, but. however i'll also give them that: mentioned a bit more often is that at least at some point kapow-i Becomes part android / referred to as a cyborg, thanks to the same character as in 2015 & prior's tragic backstory. i don't think this fun fact is like super constantly relevant or obvious, so i Could imagine something along the lines of blade getting the same treatment & it also not being particularly more relevant. or else the proximity of such concepts like "kapow-i's a cyborg, the serials run clip seems to refer to like 'we need this specific rando who is now blade to be injected with Ultimate Fighter elixir (& have their family killed. because) & people's whose bodies couldn't handle it are now kind of like funny little robots (cybernetically automated but with some personality)" & like blade we need you to be a fighting machine was thus sort of conflated lol. but maybe they're a cyborg like i think it happens a lot anyways
