How much I think Percy Jackson characters like Taylor Swift:
Percy: 100% a swiftie. He’s a reputation and lover stan but has a special spot for state of grace (your my Achilles heel lyric is the reason why) and loves this is why we can't have Nice things (its the mama lyric). and obviously 1989 is the album the got him really into Taylor. Dancing around to you are in love with Annabeth in his moms living kitchen. and he loves welcome to New York (no shit)
Annabeth: adores her. Speak now stan. Better than revenge TV was on REPLAY when Rachel was around. Cries to The Last Time (TV). She has a special spot for RED TV because that is the album she played during Percys disappearance and lets just say she can't listen to forever winter without crying. Associates happiness with her dad and my tears riochet with Luke. Loves Cornelia Street because to Annabeth, she thinks of the sea and how the boy with sea green eyes will always be there.
Grover: debut and fearless stan. Is the one that introduced Percy to Taylor when they were all 12. Loves playing hey Stephan and I’m only me when I’m with you on his reed pipés. It reminds him of Juniper
Thalia: not really (I hate to say it as a Thalia lover) but she doesn’t mind as long as she doesn’t have to hear shake it off on Grover’s reed pipes
Luke: NO. He listens to Kanye and hates Taylor "she only writes about the guys that did her wrong" and thinks Annabeth is childish because she listens to her
Clarisse: vibes to reputation with Silena. She can’t listen to anything Taylor ESPECIALLY lover without silena in her mind. she hears the opening lines to long live and cries
Silena: biggest swiftie at Camp. Is a Midnight and Speak Now girlie (a WCS girlie - she replaces the 19 with 13; the age Luke munipated her) also Loves high infidelity for some reason. People think she loves Lover which she does but Speak Now means more because that was the time she became a swiftie. She remembers acting out Speak Now (the song) with her sisters Lacy and Drew, as she used her crush Charlie to be the guy that her (the wedding crasher) ends up with. Loves castles crumbing and nothing new
Connor Stoll: No but he steals the vinyls for Silena to play on the loud speakers of Camp because she would use secrets against so he was under her
Travis: he would deny If anyone asked but he listens to the way I loved you and thinks of Katie. No one thinks he likes Taylor but folklore is his favorite
Katie: she loves Haunted stan thanks to Silena and believes that Long Story Short is her song
Beckendorf: Listens to Lover and imagines a small house where he and Silena can leave the Christmas lights till January. Thinks about making the Red TV ring for her. Likes Reputation (but more endgame and bad blood featuring Kendrick Lamar)
Nico: no. I'm sorry. Thinks she's overrated

Thump
“Oh my god, make it stop,” Liz moaned, half asleep in Dave’s arms.
Thump thump
“I’m gonna call him,” Dave grumbled and moved to sit up in the dark.
“No,” Liz sleepily pulled him back to her, “They’re trying to have a baby. Let them enjoy their stupidity for at least one night.”
Dave stared down at Liz with wide eyes. “They’re trying to what?”
She froze, realizing she maybe just revealed some news about his best friend that wasn’t hers to tell. “Go back to sleep,” she whispered.
He settled back next to her, but was now wide awake. Taylor had just called him two days ago to tell him that Ally couldn’t carry any more children, so why the fuck were they trying to get pregnant? Two days ago they were looking for a surrogate - which didn’t mean they couldn’t fool around, but… oh shit.
“Liz…” his voice sounded like a warning.
“Mmmm,” she grumbled, snuggling her head deeper into his shoulder.
“What did Ally say… exactly?”
There was a brief pause before Liz took a breath, “Just that they were having a tough time getting pregnant. Why?” She shifted a little so she could see his face.
“She didn’t…” he wasn’t quite sure how to finish his question. Did my best friend and his wife try to knock you up? seemed a little much.
“Please don’t tell her I said anything. I don’t want her to think-“
“Taylor already told me,” he pulled her back to him and tried to relax enough to fall back asleep, “Don’t worry.”
*
Taylor grinned when Dave met him in the hallway between their two rooms. “You look like shit,” he laughed.
“Can’t imagine why,” Dave muttered.
“She keep you up all night?” Taylor pointed his chin towards the room Dave had snuck out of, leaving Liz sound asleep in their bed.
“No,” he pointed a finger in his face as he passed him, “you did.”
“Ha! Payback for all those tour bus groupies!” Taylor hurried to keep up.
Dave dragged his hand down his face when they reached the elevators, listening to the soft whirring of the weights behind the door.
“Hey, so…” Taylor shoved his hands in the pockets of the pants he was wearing the night before and awkwardly toed the tile floor. “Ally thinks she found someone.”
Fuck. “Oh yeah?” Dave tried to sound excited for him, but he was up most of the night dreading this exact conversation.
“Yeah. Says she’s in her early thirties, healthy and already has a couple successful pregnancies, so this actually might happen!”
“That’s awesome, man,” Dave tried to sound enthused, but just sounded tired.
“Ally’s pretty jazzed, you know?”
Bet she’s not feeling so great this morning, Dave thought bitterly.
“She’s been taking all this really hard… blaming herself for last time,” Taylor rattled on as they wandered into the lobby, passing the line at the Starbucks and leaving through a side door towards a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf that was just across a small side street. “Dude? Dave, are you listening?”
“Yeah, sorry,” Dave threw on his sunglasses and waited for a car to pass before jogging across the street.
“I thought you’d be excited about this,” Taylor ran to keep up, grabbing his arm to stop him when they reached the other side of the street.
Dave sighed heavily and raked his hair off of his face, hoping he wasn’t misreading the situation, “Who did Ally ask?”
“Fuck, I don’t know. She just said some woman in her early thirties, that was healthy and was already a mom,” he repeated, “I don’t know her name yet.”
Dave waited patiently for the wheels in Taylor’s head to finally reach their destination, giving him an annoyed look when the realization finally hit him.
“Oh shit,” Taylor whispered.
“Uh, yeah,” Dave crossed his arms and turned his face to the sun, momentarily thinking it would be a perfect day to take the bike out.
“Well, did she say yes?” Taylor’s voice knocked Dave back into the present.
“I don’t think Ally really even asked her, dude. I think she just planted the ‘fertility issues’ seed and hoped it would make Liz think about it.”
“But I mean… would she? Do you think Liz would be down for that?” Taylor asked, his voice weak.
Dave turned on his heel and stalked into the coffee shop, unable to deal with all of this on just a couple hours of sleep. Taylor ran after him, hopping around a group of teenagers that were blocking the entrance and stood awkwardly next to him in line, “Sorry, man. We’re just in a jam, you know?”
“So you want to knock up my girlfriend?” Dave froze, still staring at the chalkboard menu hanging over the counter. Girlfriend was a foreign, distant word, but it fit the bill with Liz.
“You’ve only known her two weeks!” Taylor cried.
“What does that have to do with you wanting to put a human, your kid, in my girlfriend’s uterus?” They both realized that their voices were rising and that the entire coffee shop, though small, was staring at them. The girl behind the counter wearing a khaki apron and terrified stare cleared her throat and forced a smile to greet them.
*
“Liz…” Dave set their coffees on her makeup table and went to find her among all the blankets in her bed.
“No,” her voice was muffled through all the linens.
“Get up,” he laughed, already feeling better now that he was alone with her again.
She threw a pile of blankets off her face and smiled up at him, “Or you could get down…” her eyes lit up and she gasped, “Oh that’s where that came from!”
He grinned at her innocent revelation and jumped into the bed next to her, pulling back the rest of the covers to reveal that she still hadn’t gotten up to get dressed yet.
“Why did you even put on clothes?” she teased.
“Because I left to get you coffee!” he pointed to the table as she pulled his shirt off.
“Oh! Thanks!” she started to crawl down the bed, but he yanked her back into the sheets.
“You’re always trying to get away from me, Elizabeth. Why is that?” he smiled down at her as she avoided his stare by undoing his jeans.
“Because if you bring me back, I know you actually want me?” she hesitated a moment. She hadn’t meant for it to sound so heavy, but the mood between them instantly changed. “Sorry… I made it weird, didn’t I?”
“Liz,” he held her wrists still so she would listen, “I flew to the wilds of Oregon and drove over a fucking mountain range in a tin can with Krist just to get to you. What about that makes you think I don’t want you?”
“Okay, but that was last week, so…,” Liz smiled, hoping to relieve the tension a little.
He smiled back at her and released her wrists to kiss her when Taylor pounded on the wall next to them.
“We’re leaving! See you at our house in a bit!”
“A fucking text would have been nice, but thanks T,” Dave yelled back.
*
Dave and Liz decided to give Taylor and Ally a generous head start, opting to stay in bed, order room service and watch terrible daytime television together. When it was finally time to leave, Liz quickly gathered up her things into her overnight bag and left it with Travis, promising to meet him at the airport by six.
“Is this your fancy ass car?” Liz stopped short behind a low slung Tesla as its tail lights blinked in response to Dave unlocking the doors.
“What, did you think I was going to haul you around in the minivan?” he pulled open the passenger door and waited for her to get in. “I had it dropped off last night just to impress you,” he teased.
“No, it’s... it’s cute,” she said, knowing full well the last thing any man wanted their car to be was ‘cute’. She hopped into the car, immediately folding her hands in her lap and wondering if she should even put her well loved skate shoes on the carpet. The car was pristine and smelled strangely of strawberry chapstick as Sonic Youth played quietly from the stereo.
“It’s this fucking thing,” Dave answered her unasked question when he started the car, flicking the Motorhead air freshener hung from the rear view mirror. “He would have used it as target practice if he knew it smelled like a fucking popsicle.”
Liz smiled at the thought of a pissed off Lemmy opening fire on an innocent air freshener. “Maybe it was too hard to capture the smell of Jack and Coke?”
Dave watched her slide her sunglasses on and settle back into her seat. “He would have loved you,” he finally said, backing the car out of its spot.
Liz laughed a little, “Funny story about that…”
“Oh, Christ. You didn’t fuck him, did you?” Dave asked, only a little serious. Some of the stories he had heard were wild enough to make him uncomfortable, and he had seen some crazy things over the past thirty years.
“No, I think I have the only wholesome backstage Lemmy story in existence. My dad and I bailed on an elementary school father-daughter dance to go to a Motorhead show and somehow ended up backstage in all our finery. I’m pretty sure my mom still thinks we went to the dance.”
“Was that your first concert?” Dave asked, trying to focus on driving through LA traffic and wrap his brain around what Liz was telling him at the same time.
“No, that’s…,” she laughed a little, “that was an entirely different shit show. Anyways, Lemmy saw us watching the opener and thought it was the best thing ever, me in my pink dress and my dad in his suit and was just the sweetest to us. He spent fifteen minutes trying to find me a drink that didn’t have alcohol in it.”
“Tap water?”
“Yep. Probably from a hose outside,” she giggled.
“Okay so what was your first concert?” he asked as they waited at a light to merge onto the freeway.
“Pantera,” she said quickly, “Are you gonna show me what this rocket ship can do or are we gonna go the speed limit the whole way?”
Dave kept his eyes on the traffic light, waiting impatiently for it to turn green before he stomped on the gas and Liz was thrown back into her seat with a yelp. “How’s that for cute?” he laughed.
*
Dave heard his phone begin to ring and volleyed the ping pong ball back at Taylor so hard that it bounced off the table and disappeared into a stack of drum equipment Taylor had stored in the corner of his garage.
“Point, fucker!” he yelled and answered the call.
“David,” his mother’s stern voice could still make him flinch.
“Yeah, Mom?”
“I’m looking at my email and it says here you have a girlfriend.”
Dave gave an exaggerated sigh and turned away from Taylor as he began tossing his ping pong paddle up in the air. “How many times do I need to ask you to turn off the Google alerts for my name?”
“I’m just checking up on my only son, darling. Now stop hedging and tell me who she is.”
Dave considered his next move carefully while he walked out onto Taylor’s driveway, “She’s an actress.”
“Yes I know that, David. How did you meet her?”
“If you already know who she is, why are you asking me?” he instinctively wanted to apologize for sassing her, “McCartney introduced us.”
“Ah. Well, I suppose if he vouches for her…” she scoffed.
“Mom...” Dave sighed. He knew she was joking, but the conversation was still painful.
“No, David. It’s absolutely fine that you don’t tell me anything about your life anymore.”
“Mom!”
She finally laughed and Dave could hear her laptop closing followed by the familiar squeak of her favorite chair, “Are you happy?”
He thought for a moment, turning to watch Liz laugh with Ally on the front porch of the Hawkin’s house. “Yeah Mom, I am.”
“That’s good, dear,” he could hear the smile in her voice. “Because I’ve seen her boobs and they’re spectacular.”
Dave’s mouth dropped open in shock, “What?”
“In her movie, David. The one about the Russian Princess?” her laugh rang through the phone. “Don’t tell me you haven’t seen her work.”
“I must have missed that one,” he muttered.
“As long as you’re happy, darling.”
“She’s... she’s pretty great,” he said, smiling at Liz as she waved to him from the front porch.
“I’ll expect my dinner invitation to meet her soon, David. Love you.”
“Love you too, Mom.”
He listened to her laugh as she ended the call.
*
“Thanks for feeding me,” Liz hugged Ally while Dave and Taylor discussed the best way around the LAX traffic.
“You’re always welcome here, Liz!” Ally said, “Taylor and I are headed to London a week early for our anniversary, we should try to meet up for drinks!”
“Oh, I would love that!” Liz cried. She was leaving in a few weeks for England and the only person she knew on this film was Johnny, but she wasn’t about to spend all her free time with him, so the prospect of friends was encouraging.
“You know,” Ally began, but paused to think for a moment, “I was wondering…” The air around them suddenly went still as Taylor and Dave abruptly ceased their conversation to listen to Ally. “I was wondering what you think of pregnancy? Like, if you enjoyed it.”
“Allison…,” Taylor warned.
Liz looked between the two, startled by Ally’s question and the look on Taylor’s face. “Um…,” her eyes landed on Dave, who was glaring harshly at Ally.
“Look, Liz,” Taylor quickly stepped towards them, “Just to kill the awkwardness here because this is not a good time to be asking,” he gave Ally a pointed look which she ignored, “but Ally and I were wondering if maybe you’d be open to-“
“Oh my fucking god,” Dave said under his breath and stormed past them to his car. Taylor and Liz watched him go while Ally stared down at her hands.
“What… is happening?” Liz asked, completely bewildered by the sudden change in everyone.
“We were wondering if you’d be open to being a surrogate… for us,” Taylor finally said and a heavy silence hung over them as Liz absorbed his words. “It wouldn’t be right away, but within like the next couple years,” he added quickly.
Liz snapped her jaw shut when she realized it was hanging open, “I… um… I really would have to…”
“I know it’s a lot to ask, but we just really wanted someone that we like and you kinda check all the boxes,” Ally said gently.
“That’s good to hear,” Liz said, more worried about Dave’s reaction than anything else at the moment, “but I’m going to need some time to think about it.”
“Of course,” Ally nodded.
“I should go check on him,” Liz said quietly, pointing over her shoulder towards Dave’s car, “Thanks again for dinner.” The moment she shut the car door behind her, Dave threw the car into reverse and backed out of the driveway. Liz caught a glimpse of Taylor scolding Ally before the car raced down the street.
“Well…,” she looked over at Dave, noticing his knuckles were white on the steering wheel, “That was weird. Are you okay?”
“Yep,” he answered, sarcastically emphasizing the ‘p’.
“I thought for a moment they were going to ask us to wife swap,” she buckled her seat belt and offered a little laugh, hating how much tension hung between them when she was about to leave for several weeks.
“That probably would have gone over better than them asking to knock you up.”
“So, I’m just going to go out on a limb here and guess that you aren’t okay with this?”
Dave snapped his head towards her so fast that his hair caught on his sunglasses, “You agreed?”
“No!” Liz cried, “I said I needed time to think about it!”
“So you’re going to agree,” he muttered, turning away from her again.
“It’s been less than five minutes, Dave. Give me a little credit.”
The car rolled to a stop at an intersection and he sighed, “It’s just… I finally find someone that I really like and Taylor wants to fucking put a baby in her.”
Liz couldn’t help but laugh at that. She started with a stifled giggle that soon turned into her laughing so hard that she had to wipe away tears.
“I’m so glad you find this funny,” Dave grumbled.
“Oh, come on. You have to admit this is a whole new level of bizarre,” she giggled.
Dave sighed again, distracted by oncoming traffic as he tried to make a left hand turn, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure my best friend asking to borrow my girlfriend’s uterus for nine months is about as bizarre as it gets.”
“He said it would be in the next couple years. It’s not like it’ll happen tomorrow,” now Liz was completely reeling. First she’s being asked to carry a child for another family, then Dave starts admitting he has heavy feelings for her and now he’s calling her his girlfriend? “If you don’t want me to, I won’t,” she said. Ally and Taylor could find another surrogate, maybe she could even help them look for one.
“I don’t want you to,” he said firmly, “And I think it was a dick move to ask you in that way, so I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize,” Liz sat forward a little to see his face better, “Ally and Taylor really want another baby and that makes people weird, you know? Desperation makes good people do dumb shit. Please don’t be mad at them.”
She watched him as he processed her words then sat back in her seat when he didn’t reply. A few more moments passed before he reached out to flip on the stereo and rest his hand on her thigh as The Replacements ‘Little Mascara’ blared around them.
*
“Dave…,” Liz’s laugh echoed off the parking garage as Dave held her tighter.
“I wouldn’t be opposed to you faking your death and hiding out in my basement until the world forgot your name,” he said quietly into her hair.
“That’s so romantic and not at all creepy,” she said sarcastically.
“It’ll be great! I’ll throw some crackers and string cheese down the stairs for you at least a couple times a day. We’ll work out a system,” he pulled back to look at her.
“You really do want to wear my skin to your birthday party!”
“Yeah, but it’s yours until January,” his smile faded when Travis appeared at the elevators behind them. “Do I really have to let you go?”
Liz searched his face for a moment, “Yes, but maybe I’ll find time to see you in England? Maybe some miracle will happen and I’ll get a weird day off and come see a show.” She wasn’t sure what her schedule was yet, but from what she heard of the director of the film, she wouldn’t be getting any days off.
“Promise?” he knew he was being possessive and whiny, but he couldn’t help it around her.
“I promise,” she whispered, resolving to make the time to see him if she wasn’t given it.
“Liz, we have to go!” Travis called.
She dropped her arms from Dave’s shoulders and wiggled out of his grasp, “I’ll see you soon, okay?”
He nodded and turned back to his car, unable to watch her walk away from him. Just as he hit the unlock button, Liz called his name.
She had stopped a few feet away and grinned at him, “I want my airport hello.”
He dropped his keys on the concrete as she ran towards him, launching herself into his arms just as she had done the morning before. He turned and pinned her against the side of his car as if the harder he kissed her, the more time would slow down.
“I’m gonna miss you so fucking much,” he whispered.
Liz slid off of him, but pulled him back for another kiss. “You called me your girlfriend earlier,” she said, feeling Dave hold her a bit tighter.
“Did I?” he feigned confusion, “I don’t recall…”
Liz kissed him again and hugged him tightly, burying her face into his neck. “I already miss you,” she smiled sadly before pulling away and jogging to meet Travis.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 17/04/2021 (Polo G, Dave, Doja Cat & SZA, Taylor Swift)
Okay, so, UK Singles Chart time – all hell broke loose. I knew Taylor Swift and Dave would make an impact but I was also not expecting all of the chaos to come with it. With that said, Lil Nas X is still at #1 for a third week with “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” and let’s just get through with this. This is REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Tumblr media
Rundown
In this starting rundown segment, I’ve got a lot to cover so I’ll make it quick, no nonsense. First of all, I cover the UK Top 75. Why the top 75? I’m difficult – even though it’s actually more convenient. Secondly, the notable drop-outs – songs that peaked in the top 40 or spent more than five weeks on the chart that are gone from the top 75 this week thanks to this avalanche of 14 or so new arrivals. This week, we say goodbye to a bunch of our debuts from last week as well as “telepatía” by Kali Uchis, “Bringing it Back” by Digga D and AJ Tracey, “You’re Mines Still” by Yung Bleu and remixed by Drake, “Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus, “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles, “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers and several #1 hits, including “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, “Sweet Melody” by Little Mix, “Mood” by 24kGoldn featuring iann dior, “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I and finally, “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi, after spending a whopping 113 weeks in this region... despite being terrible. I mean, it’ll be back next week but celebrate the little victories, like our returns, for example. “X Gon’ Give it to Ya” by the late DMX is back at #72 after the passing of the hip-hop icon last week. This legendary song was actually one of his later hits – not even a hit in the States – and originally peaked at #6 in the UK back in 2003. We sadly don’t see anything else from DMX returning but we do also see Taylor Swift’s re-recorded version of “Love Story” revisiting the charts at #45 off the album boost.
Now for the songs that fell or rose this week, starting with the notable losses, being songs that dropped five spots or more. First, we have “Your Love (9PM)” by ATB, Topic and A7S at #13, followed by “Don’t Play” by Anne-Marie, KSI and Digital Farm Animals at #17, “Hold On” by Justin Bieber at #20, “Save Your Tears” by the Weeknd at #22, “Up” by Cardi B at #23, “Commitment Issues” by Central Cee at #25, “Latest Trends” by AI x JI plummeting at #28, “Patience” by KSI featuring YUNGBLUD and Polo G at #29, “drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo at #34, “We’re Good” by Dua Lipa at #35, “Anyone” by Justin Bieber at #40, “Black Hole” by Griff at #41, “All You Ever Wanted” by Rag’n’Bone Man at #43, “WITHOUT YOU” by the Kid LAROI at #44, “Binding Lights” by the Weeknd at #46, “Goosebumps” by HVME and Travis Scott at #47, “6 for 6” by Central Cee at #48, “Medicine” by James Arthur at #49, “Head & Heart” by Joel Corry and MNEK at #50, “Met Him Last Night” by Demi Lovato featuring Ariana Grande at #54 off of the debut, “Paradise” by MEDUZA and Dermot Kennedy at #58, Doja Cat’s “Streets” at #60 and “Best Friend” with Saweetie at #61, “Tonight” by Ghost Killer Track featuring D-Block Europe at #62, “Get Out My Head” by Shane Codd at #63, “Beautiful Mistakes” by Maroon 5 featuring Megan Thee Stallion at #66, “Track Star” by Mooski at #67, “Headshot” by Lil Tjay, Fivio Foreign and Polo G at #73, “What Other People Say” by Sam Fischer and Demi Lovato at #74 and finally, whatever’s left of Drake as “What’s Next” is at #68 and “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” with Rick Ross is at #70.
Our gains are arguably more interesting, as it’s impressive to climb five spots or higher or reach the top 40 for the first time in the midst of all this nonsense. Therefore, we do have just a few gains, those being “Runaway” by AURORA at #51 off of the debut, “Nice to Meet Ya” by Wes Nelson featuring Yxng Bane making a surprise attack at the top 40 going to #39 off of the debut, “Good Without” by Mimi Webb at #18 and “Ferrari Horses” by D-Block Europe and RAYE continuing its gains up to #16. That’s pretty much it – still took a while – so let’s get through those 14 new arrivals, huh? God help me.
NEW ARRIVALS
#75 – “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)” – Fred again.. and The Blessed Madonna
Produced by Boston Bun and Fred again..
This is one of the songs that really padded out our new arrivals list – to explain, a lot of the time, these songs were released weeks ago and only now gain enough traction to debut within the top 75 and hence be discussed by me. This one just happens to have popped up in a week where everything is going on already so it kind of gets lost in incoherency but regardless, this is a song from Ed Sheeran’s producer Fred Gibson, who I refuse to call by his stage name, from his most recent project featuring vocals from The Blessed Madonna, most commonly known right now as the producer and DJ behind the club mix edition of Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia and hence the “Levitating” remix with Missy Elliott and, well, actual Madonna. The song itself is one I’m surprised is about anything but has these mostly spoken word vocals about how we as a world have “lost dancing” to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as hugs, and, well, that’s all she decides to elaborate about. She also guarantees that once everything is over, “what comes next will be marvellous”. Whilst I appreciate the sentiment, I think it’s almost a dangerous promise, given that we’ll be in this pandemic for longer than anyone expected and it’s pretty evident that we’ll still be keeping to social distancing as the vaccine roll-out continues all throughout this year. At this point, we’re still in lockdown and international travel will still be stunted for years after the fact. This song feels like The Blessed Madonna getting on her pedestal about the arts and their impact on people without going into any detail that warrants the soapbox, bizarrely over some synth-heavy deep house beat that decides to do little more than flutter through the entirety of the five-minute runtime. Yeah, this is pretty insufferable. Next.
#71 – “Slumber Party” – Ashnikko featuring Princess Nokia
Produced by CallMeTheKidd
Okay, so TikTok picks this one up and the label then decides to push this over “Deal with It”, a brilliant pop song that was right there and already had the high-budget video to boot? Regardless, this is taken from Ashnikko’s debut mixtape of sorts, Demidevil, and whilst as a whole the project does little more than act as harmless fun guising as anything more, a couple of the singles are genuinely pretty great, including this one, which seems to be a break-out hit for rapper Princess Nokia. This song relies on the jerkiness of its almost DJ Mustard-esque club beat and that warped might-be-a-flute loop to support Ashnikko’s similarly sloppy delivery, which decides to be as in character in possible – of which I mean that it is obnoxious and frankly ridiculously stupid. This isn’t a “slumber party” at all, and whilst the childish implications are if anything kind of unnerving, there is a lot of fun to be had here if you get past the “kawaii hentai boobies” in the chorus. Nokia’s verse continues the album’s general early 2000s aesthetic with her referencing many hits and singers from that time period in a pretty slick albeit one-and-done verse that should really be extended further than it is. I mean, I would have preferred that to Ashnikko’s second verse comparing her girlfriend to the little girl from The Addams Family, before mentioning how her eyes go black when she orgasms and that her spit tastes like Juicy Fruit gum. Okay, so when it comes to filthy lesbian rap I think I prefer acts like BASSIDE but for what it’s worth, this is surreal and fun enough for me to like. I hope it does well, but know she has better songs even on that same tape.
#69 – “Versus” – SL and M1llionz
Produced by Lucas Dante and Yng Cld
Oh, hey, another drill track by two guys produced by two guys for two guys to rap about how cool it is to be the two guys they are. I guess the gimmick here is that the single actually has an instrumental version as well for whatever reason; I guess they want people to remix the track. That would make sense, as this beat is immediately recognisable from that chipmunk squeak of a glitched vocal sample they use. In fact, I think I prefer the instrumental version because when those booming 808s come in, it hits really hard especially with the scattering drill percussion. SL and M1llionz are trading bars here in what is basically one verse and it’s not like they’re saying nothing of interest here as there is a viable enough amount of detail here in these bars about exactly what you’d expect. But that’s exactly what it is: exactly what you’d expect. By the first verse, you’ve already heard SL talk about watching The Boondocks and that’s about as interesting as it gets. Sure, the interplay between the two guys in this case is pretty smooth, but it goes on for about a minute too long and M1llionz has a lot more charisma than SL so it does feel like half the song is wasted away. The producers know that too, as they decide to fade the song out very quickly after M1llionz stops rapping his final bars. This is fine – on some days, I’d probably call it really good – but it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.
#64 – “Starstruck” – Years & Years
Produced by Mark Ralph and Nathaniel Ledwidge
We’re not even out of that bottom third of the chart and we’ve still got a lot ahead of us before we get above that point. Here, we have “Starstruck”, sadly not the Lady Gaga or 3OH!3 song but instead the first officially solo song by Years & Years, which is now just frontman Olly Alexander after his bandmates’ departure, similar to Panic! at the Disco except the members seem to be on good terms, or Ritt Momney, except no one here is a Mormon missionary... yet. Whilst you could see this from a mile away if you had listened to that last album, it would be deceiving to say it’s only Olly this time around as he’s enlisted several outside producers and writers to craft a pretty straightforward love song. Well, is it any good? I’m not entirely sold on it, mostly because it seems to reject all of the lyrical intrigue there was in those past two albums – at least intermittently – for a pretty generic if not pure and lovely content, with the most interesting of lyrics being about sipping his partner up like cosmic juice, which I’ll admit got a laugh out of me. It is fitting for how this janky dance-pop song sounds as sonically it’s kind of a quirky mess with a lot of bassy grooves in the verses only to be replaced by a shiny synth blend that completely shrouds the chorus in video game sound effects and French house-esque filter effects. This sound is very much a late-2000s early-2010s throwback in some ways and throwing it back even further in others, which creates an interesting sound but not enough to not let this become easily stale after just the second chorus, especially if it’s going to purposefully fumble its climax for an awkward build-up that involves basically revealing the drop measures before it should have. Yeah, I want to like this but it just seems kind of confused as it is. I’m still going to listen to that third album whenever it comes, but I’m somewhat disappointed with this lead single thus far.
#57 – “Lingo” – Deno featuring J.I. the Prince of NY and Chunkz
Produced by Da Beatfreakz
Alright, so British rapper Deno has enlisted New York rapper J.I. – who I refuse to call by his full stage name – and Chunkz, who I’m pretty sure is some YouTuber, to hop on a beat from DaBeatfreakz, specifically this watery R&B beat with vocal loops drowned out by bass and some awkward mixing. Deno isn’t much of a presence in the verse or chorus, J.I. talks about some girl not chewing him right and Chunkz, who sounds awful on any beat with the whiny Auto-Tuned mumble, somehow doesn’t say anything of interest despite being the semi-professional comedian of these three guys, or at least not before Deno takes over his verse and they all give up for the last couple measures. Yes, that was one sentence – this song doesn’t deserve much more.
#56 – “Shy Away” – twenty one pilots
Produced by Tyler Joseph
I’ve never been that big a fan of twenty one pilots, but I was actually pretty fond of her most recent album, Trench. What fascinates me about them is how they seemed to have done really well for themselves that one time in the Blurryface era and have coasted off the success of that to fund some of their more out-there and experimental musical aspirations. I don’t think they’re looking for big hits anymore – which is good because this won’t be one – but people will always be looking out for what they do next, and they’ve just announced a new album coming soon with this as the lead single. Thankfully, it’s not that COVID-19 pandemic pandering from last year which got on my nerves a lot more than it should. “Shy Away”, instead, goes for... 1980s dance-punk, because, of course. I do love that jerky synth lead and how well it’s backed by that chugging bass and percussion, which we’ll always know is organic coming from Josh Dun. The song itself is a somewhat vague motivational track but not for no reason, as these lyrics actually originated from when Tyler Joseph was giving advice to his brother, a budding musician, trying to get him to see himself in a new light and find his unique purpose in music and not to “shy away” from continuing with his dreams. I can get behind that, especially if it’s going to have squealing guitar segues, an infectious power-pop chorus that will probably not leave my head for a long time and the excellent swell of guitars in that third verse before the brief breakdown in the post-chorus with all those squibbling synth effects. It’s just a wonderfully constructed song on all accounts, even if it sacrifices some of that unique personality we usually get from Tyler for the sake of making a tighter pop-rock song.
#52 – “You Belong with Me” (Taylor’s Version) – Taylor Swift
Produced by Taylor Swift and Christopher Rowe
I guess the best place to start with these re-recordings is the original song, which I’ve never liked. I’ve never seen a reason to enjoy Taylor’s entitled adolescent whining over some pretty garbage production making what may as well be organic country instrumentation sound like MIDI tracks. She doesn’t deliver a particularly good vocal performance, or at least one good enough to excuse “She wear short skirts, I wear T-shirts, she’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers”. There isn’t enough detail to make this seem like a toxic relationship so she ends up just sounding bratty. This new version, from a matured Taylor Swift a decade later, has decided not to change any of these lyrics and it just sounds worse coming from a Taylor who clearly knows a lot better and is in a happy relationship. Okay, the instrumentation sounds a lot more organic and has more of a groove than it used to, with some more intricate production moments that are cool, but that’s really the only change that improves on an already mediocre song. Taylor’s voice has improved a lot since that original recording but so has she, and her selling these lyrics with as much conviction while in her 30s just ends up sounding sad. It only makes sense to “reclaim” these songs if you’re going to try and make them your own again, and not representative of someone I don’t think Taylor is anymore. Alas, it’s listenable, but this could have been one of the more interesting re-recordings and nothing was done with it past the better mixing and a pretty epic guitar solo, even if it does feel unwarranted by the content.
#42 – “Way Too Long” – Nathan Dawe, Anne-Marie and MoStack
Produced by Scribz Riley, Tré Jean-Marie, Nathan Dawe and GRADES
For someone who is solely a producer and DJ, I say that’s two or three too many credited producers, but regardless, before we get to more Taylor Swift, which we will eventually, we’ve got some leftover house track with B-list stars that starts with the words, “Hey, yo, yo, it’s Stack Rack”. With that said, I actually kind of like this song with its strings swelling more than the usual track and its bass-heavy club groove in the verses being more complex in its percussion, especially when the sound design is that interesting in the second half of the verse as all of these effects and different synth patterns occur in the back of the mix, which kind of lets me forgive how anti-climactic the drop is. It’s not really an EDM song as much as it’s a light-hearted pop track and Anne-Marie isn’t taking it as seriously as she could, especially on that vocoder-drop chorus, which makes the song a lot more fun that it should be. MoStack is who really shines on this track though, as his verse is – probably unintentionally – very funny, as he twists the meaning of the song to a phallic joke, happily engages in monogamy, particularly with every British pop-star he can think of and says “forget quality, I want quantity”. He just lists famous singers by the end of this verse that he finds attractive and is completely gone off the deep-end by the time he’s ignored by Anne-Marie’s swell of a chorus. It’s not a great song and definitely falls into the traps that most EDM does but as it is, it’s a fun track with a surprisingly hilarious and sloppy guest verse from MoStack that I was not expecting, as well as just being inoffensive across the board.
#33 – “Mercury” – Dave featuring Kamal.
Produced by Manny Manhattan and Kyle Evans
Dave released a double A-side single – or at least whatever the equivalent for that is in the streaming age – and this was the less popular track, “Mercury”, with singer Kamal. If you don’t know Dave is, he’s one of the biggest and most celebrated rappers in the UK and this is his first solo release since 2019. I’ve usually been pretty happy with Dave’s releases – hell, Psychodrama was one of my favourite albums of 2019 – but I’m not entirely sure I can endorse this lazy trap beat relying on some gentle but overbearing pianos and groovier bass knocks. Really, the beat is pretty minimal so we can focus on what Dave’s saying, right? Well, we could, but why would we want to? Sure, there’s some good wordplay weaved into here and I don’t dislike his stories about gang violence and paranoia, even if they’re delivered in the most checked-out almost condescending way possible, but I can’t get behind the misogyny that seems to run a lot deeper than it does in typical rap. Sure, he makes the same googly-eyed observations about attractive women, describes some parts of the sex but interestingly not any part he plays, and also describes her as a “work of art”, but this is all after he dismisses women in general for not “forgiving him for his sins”, in some thinly-veiled Ariana Grande reference that leaves me more pissed off than he is, especially since Dave’s not as self-aware as he thinks he is, particularly because he himself can barely forgive himself for his wrongs in that second verse. Instead, he shrouds it in hedonism like any other rapper – what have the women got to do other than make good decisions for themselves about who they sleep with? He doesn’t go into disgusting detail like Digga D on “Toxic” but it rubs me the wrong way, especially if he’s going to then complain about the myth that is cancel culture. If this comes from a genuine place where he was genuinely attacked for something he didn’t deserve the abuse for, I’d understand, but why even complain about the supposed mob of Twitter users when the only tie you have to it is something reported on your brother by the right-wing press that everyone ignored? Other than missing the point terribly, it’s not like this song is catchy or notable. Even he acknowledges that this five-minute bore wouldn’t make the album, and it’s for good reason.
#32 – “Anywhere Away from Here” – Rag’n’Bone Man and P!nk
Produced by Rag’n’Bone Man, Mike Elizondo and Ben Jackson-Cook
So this is Rag’n’Bone Man’s second single from that upcoming album, or at least the second to chart, and after the surprisingly great post-punk rocker that was “All You Ever Wanted”, I’m excited to hear what a duet with P!nk could sound like. After all, they’re both rougher voices in the pop sphere, even if P!nk’s been doing it for much longer. Sadly, it’s a ballad... not to say they can’t do ballads well but this is a pretty minimal piano-lead track with some really badly mixed vocals from Rag’n’Bone Man as he channels an unintelligible Dave Grohl that’s way too loud in the mix, especially when the strings come in and cloud the mix. I do like the content once again with Rag’n’Bone Man as he continues to discuss the careless days of his youth, but this is more about growing older and eventually growing discontent with that lifestyle and each other, just wanting to be somewhere else. P!nk delivers this in a way that’s a lot more flattering to her voice and the instrumental, but when the borderline choir vocals come in with those terribly-mixed harmonies between the two and that pointless bridge, I give up on this song. It just refuses to go anywhere, I’m sorry, and it had a lot of potential but these voices don’t particularly mesh together especially over some basic piano and strings. This could have been great and as is, is less than mediocre.
#30 – “Mr. Perfectly Fine” (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault) – Taylor Swift
Produced by Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff
I didn’t listen to the re-recorded version of Fearless; instead I just listened to the six or so bonus “from the vault” tracks because that’s the only new content and I’m not big on any of it. It sounds exactly as you’d expect a 31-year-old woman reciting lyrics she wrote and shelved when she was a teenager, not even thinking they were good enough to release then, decades after the fact, and most of the songs just aren’t interesting at all. I think “Bye Bye Baby” is a great pop song but besides that there’s nothing much to enjoy in these tracks, at least from me. I know that Taylor’s biggest fans will love how she re-recorded leaked and rumoured songs that had been circulating but as someone detached from that, it does nothing for me. This song in particular is about Joe Jonas, because, of course, it was, and it’s a petty, sarcastic break-up song Taylor should be able to deliver confidently but ends up falling flat based on almost that awful verse melody alone, which is just janky, unpleasant and stretched out to the point of annoyance, especially if it’s going to be produced this well. She dug up this track seemingly only to get Antonoff on the record, and, sure, the chorus is catchy and has that one great moment with those crashing guitars, but it enjoys killing its momentum as soon as it gets going... for five minutes. Yeah, I’m sorry but I’m not interested in what was left on the cutting room floor a decade separated from the release of this re-recording, especially if this fully-fleshed instrumentation does little more than distract from how dreadfully boring this song is. Wake me up when she re-records Speak Now or especially reputation, because that will truly be fascinating.
#10 – “Kiss Me More” – Doja Cat featuring SZA
Produced by tizhimself, Carter Lang, Rogét Chahayed and Yeti Beats
I’ve forgotten to mention that three of those 14 new arrivals actually debuted in the top 10 this week, meaning, yes, whilst we’re nearly done, we’ve still got a lot to cover and we start with what seems to be the lead single from Doja Cat’s upcoming album, as she enlists SZA to assist her on this classily unclassy disco-pop song. Those main guitars do sound great, especially with Doja’s signature cooing over them, and that’s before we get to that slick pink disco groove not dissimilar to “Say So” but with a tighter, fun bassline and how quickly Doja strips off the subtlety. I could do without that mess of a post-chorus that is just a blend of too many, not very great vocal takes, but I do love how it leads into Doja’s unsubtle sex bars that actually go into some interesting detail, but not as much SZA being kind of filthy but also delivering a pretty great vocal performance, even if she starts with asking her partner for that “gushy stuff”. I do find it odd that it decides to censor “dick” of all words, but this production is great and I actually particularly like that final chorus and post-chorus once SZA starts harmonising on it. As is, it’s a pretty tight and likeable disco jam from two charismatic performers... co-written by Dr. Luke. Goddamn it, Doja, I don’t know what contract he’s got you in but Jesus, someone do something about that.
#9 – “Titanium” – Dave
Produced by Kyle Evans and P2J
This is our second Dave song and obviously the more successful of the two, at about three minutes shorter – thankfully – debuting in the top 10. It’s much better than “Mercury”, even if the song literally starts with him bragging about not needing vibrators to make his girlfriend orgasm. That said, the lyrics here are actually a lot slicker, flowing much like he did on “Streatham” as he lists so many precious metals you’d think he’s Bender. I do like the intricacies in these lyrics, even if he doesn’t really adapt it into any wordplay. He mentions how awkward that it is that his neighbours are going to vote Conservative as he brags in an almost freestyle-like structure in the single verse he spits, which has a couple flow switches and a lot more empty space than it should for a beat this awkwardly mixed, as whilst I like the trap percussion here, it really does not sound that great over borderline MIDI pianos. The little string inflections and drum fills here are cool though, and those intricacies are what makes Dave’s verse so interesting, as he foreshadows his bar about Tyson Fury with an ad-lib that Fury used himself as a build-up for his boxing matches. His JAY-Z references are also on point and pretty clever, it’s just that there’s still not much to this past that and I’m left pretty underwhelmed with these releases from Dave, even if they’re not from that next album, whenever that’s coming.
#3 – “RAPSTAR” – Polo G
Produced by Einer Bankz and Synco
Well, Lil Tjay debuted at #2 a couple weeks ago so I guess it’s only fair for his fellow “Pop Out” rapper, and the one I personally immensely prefer, Polo G to have his surprise, kind-of-out-of-nowhere top 5 debut. Much like “MONTERO”, this track was being teased for nearly a year, having first been shown as an acoustic collaboration with professional ukulele player – yes, seriously – Einer Bankz, who’s also credited with production here, in May of 2020. Just shy of a year afterwards, we get “RAPSTAR”, in the same vein of other all-caps trap songs about musical success like “ROCKSTAR” or “POPSTAR”. Maybe next we’ll get “NEOCLASSICAL DARK WAVESTAR”. Regardless, this song is basically just about being epic and Polo G can effectively sell that even in his more basic flexing because of that intermittent detail like when he says the only woman he talks to is Siri, which isn’t even a brag or a flex, more a sad admission of his crippling loneliness which I don’t think was intended. He also does more than empty flexing, discussing his past drug addictions and how he coped with that alongside all of the struggles he had to overcome at the same time. That second verse may start with him saying he’s 2Pac reborn but it goes a lot deeper into his anxieties than I expected. All of this is over a melancholy guitar-based beat with some great bass and better mixing than is expected of these pop-trap singles, even if it’s still far from perfect. Those eerie vocal loops in the background add a lot to this song and I think that chorus has a pretty great build-up, even if the percussion may seem a bit too basic and uncomplicated as an effective drop. I can’t really complain about this at all, though, as it is really good for what it is and I’m glad it’s this high.
Conclusion
And with that, I’m finally, FINALLY finished with scouring through these new arrivals and I’ll admit that it was less of a mixed bag and more of a generally positive week, at least for me, as I found more I liked than anything I disliked, particularly with Best of the Week as that goes to twenty one pilots for “Shy Away”, with the Honourable Mention going to Ashnikko’s “Slumber Party” featuring Princess Nokia, although there’s a lot to praise on the charts this week. In terms of Worst of the Week, it’s probably going to go to Fred again.. and The Blessed Madonna for “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)”, with a Dishonourable Mention for, sadly, Dave’s “Mercury” featuring Kamal. I would like to note that Taylor Swift was awfully closer than she should be to getting that this week. Here’s this week’s top 10:
Tumblr media
What to expect from this week? Gosh, I don’t know. AJ Tracey? Young Thug? Either way, we’ll see whatever happens to all this – whether it gets flooded out or they all end up sticking around – next week, so I’ll see you then. Thanks for reading.

CALM DOWN, IT'S THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS WITH OUR FAVORITE DIVAS, DIVOS & FRESH NEW ARTISTS!
By DJ FR8-O
Tumblr media
The world's most unpredictable awards show just threw us another curveball. Hosting this year's hottest night in music is comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco. Yeah, never heard of him either, but the outspoken Italian is ready to bring the laughs and the chutzpah back into the VMAs. Joining him will be all our favorite divas, divos and fresh new artists who've been dominating our playlists over the last 12 months. This year's ceremony is going to be a battle of the pop princesses with both Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift snatching 10 nominations each. Who will take home the most Moon Persons is yet to be seen, but here are my top picks.
BEST NEW ARTIST Ava Max Billie Eilish H.E.R. Lil Nas X Rosalía
Tumblr media
Lizzo It may seem like Lizzo just came out of nowhere and went straight to the front of the class, but she's been schooling her fans since she was 14 years old. In an industry that puts so much pressure on image and tries to hide flaws with photoshop and camera tricks, Lizzo celebrates her curves and literally puts it all out there. Her confidence is only overshadowed by her talent, with a stream of hits and sold-out shows over the past year.
BEST COLLABORATION BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber: "I Don't Care" Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!"
Tumblr media
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" As if she wasn't jaw-droppingly gifted all on her own, no one has ever brought the on-screen chemistry as Gaga and Cooper did in the big-screen blockbuster A Star is Born. The heat was so intense that it raised suspicions of the two being more than just co-stars. While those rumors have since been squashed, I still get a few raised hairs every time I hear their duet from the diva's Oscar-winning film.
BEST POP 5 Seconds of Summer: "Easier" Cardi B and Bruno Mars: "Please Me" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Khalid: "Talk" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down"
Tumblr media
Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Everyone has their opinion of what makes a great pop song, or in this case a great pop video, but I'm sure you would agree that Nick soaking in a claw foot tub and Joe tied up in his underwear would be somewhere at the top of the list. Not only does this earworm bury deep into your brain with its throwback vibe and razor-sharp hook, but watching these guys all grown up and having more fun than ever makes this clip as timeless as the track. Did I mention the bathtub?
BEST HIP HOP 21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Cardi B: "Money" DJ Khaled (featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend): "Higher" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Travis Scott (featuring Drake): "Sicko Mode"
Tumblr media
2 Chainz (featuring Ariana Grande): "Rule the World" Is there nothing that Ari can't do? It's hard to tell who the actual guest artist is on this track, but are we really surprised? Even during her early days on "Bang Bang," she managed to hold her own with two powerhouse divas. Now it looks like she's the one bringing the noise.
BEST R&B Childish Gambino: "Feels Like Summer" H.E.R. (featuring Bryson Tiller): "Could've Been" Alicia Keys: "Raise a Man" Normani (featuring 6lack): "Waves" Anderson .Paak (featuring Smokey Robinson): "Make It Better"
Ella Mai: "Trip" After a 13 year absence from the show, the R&B category is back! Maybe it's because of the genre's resurgence into mainstream music; but whatever the reason, it's opening doors to a whole new pool of talent that may otherwise be overlooked, like this incredibly gifted and well-deserved artist.
BEST LATIN Anuel AA and Karol G: "Secreto" Benny Blanco, Tainy, Selena Gomez and J Balvin: "I Can't Get Enough" Daddy Yankee (featuring Snow): "Con Calma" Maluma: "Mala Mía" Rosalía and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura"
Tumblr media
Bad Bunny (featuring Drake): "Mia" Watching this video reminded me of growing up in Miami, and showing up at the impromptu house party that someone hosted while their parents were away. Of course, Drake never showed up to any of them, but of all the nominees, this one captures what everyday Latin life is really about, minus all the half-naked women.
BEST DANCE The Chainsmokers (featuring Bebe Rexha): "Call You Mine" Clean Bandit (featuring Demi Lovato): "Solo" DJ Snake (featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B): "Taki Taki" David Guetta, Bebe Rexha and J Balvin: "Say My Name" Marshmello and Bastille: "Happier"
Silk City and Dua Lipa: "Electricity" Music trends will come and go, but classic house will never go out of style. These guys took the essence of "Show Me Love" and "Finally" and weaved it into a track that's as fresh as it is nostalgic. Throw in Lipa's sultry vocals weaving a hypnotic melody and you've got yourself a dance anthem that no one can resist.
VIDEO FOR GOOD Jamie N Commons and Skylar Grey (featuring Gallant): "Runaway Train" Halsey: "Nightmare" The Killers: "Land of the Free" John Legend: "Preach" Lil Dicky: "Earth"
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" It can't be a coincidence that this category debuted the same year as this track. In a time when LGBTQ lives are being attacked – physically and politically – on the daily, it's refreshing and inspiring to see an artist take a stand and put her influence where her mouth is. Not only is the track brilliantly written, but I haven't seen that many LGBTQ icons together since the Tony Awards.
BEST DIRECTION Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" (Director: Dave Meyers) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Director: Andrew Thomas Huang) Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" (Director: Hannah Lux Davis) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Director: Calmatic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Director: Dano Cerny)
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Director: Taylor Swift and Drew Kirsch) Okay, I know what you're thinking, "this queen must be a huge T-Swift fan, so he's voting for her in every category." Quite the contrary, actually. I've always been pretty lukewarm when it comes to the country-turned-pop singer, but any director that could wrangle that many divas in one video shoot and not end up on the nightly news deserves a trophy.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS DJ Khaled (featuring SZA): "Just Us" (Visual Effects: GloriaFX, Sergii Mashevskyi and Anatolli Kuzmytskyi) Billie Eilish: "When the Party's Over" (Visual Effects: Ryan Ross and Andres Jaramillo) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Visual Effects: Analog) Ariana Grande: "God Is a Woman" (Visual Effects: Fabrice Lagayette at Mathematic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Visual Effects: Ethan Chancer)
Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!" (Visual Effects: Loris Paillier and Lucas Salton for BUF VFX) I'd hand over the award for this vid just for the visual of a smoldering Brendon Urie alone, but if you've seen the clip you know the allure is more than just his pretty face. Reminiscent of a modern Moulin Rouge, the screen oozes with splashes of color, action and special effects galore, from start to finish.
Tumblr media
BEST ART DIRECTION BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Art Directors: JinSil Park and BoNa Kim (MU:E) Ariana Grande: "7 Rings" (Art Director: John Richoux) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Art Director: Christian Zollenkopf for Prettybird) Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Art Director: Brittany Porter) Kanye West and Lil Pump (featuring Adele Givens): "I Love It" (Art Director: Tino Schaedler)
Tumblr media
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" (Art Director: Tatiana Van Sauter) In a world where videos are trying to be bigger, brighter and bolder than the last, it takes a good eye to keep things in the background simple and let the singers take the spotlight. Subtlety is an art in itself, especially when it's meant to help a love story unfold before your eyes. My only note is that we need to see more of Shawn in his Calvin Klein's next time.
BEST CHOREOGRAPHY FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Choreographer: Kelly Yvonne) LSD: "No New Friends" (Choreographer: Ryan Heffington) Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "Señorita" (Choreographer: Calvit Hodge) Rosalía and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura" (Choreographer: Charm La'Donna) Solange: "Almeda" (Choreographers: Maya Taylor and Solange Knowles)
BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Choreographers: Son Sungdeuk and Quick Crew) K-pop isn't exactly on heavy rotation on my playlists, but I must give credit where credit is due. Sure, the competition shows some beautiful moves of their own, but this vid is all about color, dancing, and more dancing. Don't ask me what they're singing about, but I could tell they were having fun while singing it.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR Cardi B Billie Eilish Halsey Jonas Brothers Shawn Mendes
Tumblr media
Ariana Grande This may seem like I'm playing faves here, but if you take a look at all the work the other nominees have put out in the last year together, they still don't add up to the number of albums, singles, videos and collaborations Ari has checked off her to-do list. While it may not have been ground-breaking, and there's no doubt this award will actually go to Billie Eillish, no one can argue that this diva has put in more blood, sweat and tears this year than any other artist in the biz.
SONG OF THE YEAR Drake: "In My Feelings" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" Yeah, I'm going there again because this is an anthem we all need to hear and remember; not just this year, but for many years to come until the tables are turned, the planets are realigned and the haters finally take their seats for good.
VIDEO OF THE YEAR 21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" The same goes for the video! While others might have tried to battle hate with hate, Swift chose instead to take the high road, celebrate our community, shine a spotlight on some of our favorite LGBTQ icons and hold an honest mirror up at those with narrow minds. One little music video won't change the world overnight, but if it can inspire a new generation to think differently than the one before them, then that's something to get excited about.
The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Prudential Center in Newark on August 26th at 8 p.m. ET.

It’s Not You, It’s Your Wedding
Everyone’s a critic, even when it comes to your wedding.
Especially when it comes to your wedding.
Maybe the groom chomped Bubble Yum as he recited his vows. Or the bridesmaids’ flowers were shaped like baby Yoda. Or the minister yelled at photographers just for doing their job.
Whatever the blunder, on the Reddit thread r/weddingshaming or on a series of private Facebook groups dedicated to wedding disparagement — most notably “That’s It, I’m Wedding Shaming (non ban-happy edition)” — matrimonial misanthropes can voice their opinions on everything from the bride’s camouflage gown to the happy couple’s first toke. (Yes, it was a pot-themed wedding.) According to another Reddit thread, top shame-worthy moments include a middle-age man pushing a child out of the way so he could catch the bouquet and hand it to his girlfriend; a best man who publicly confessed to sleeping with the bride two days earlier; and a couple whose dogs toddled down the aisle and left an unsavory gift.
“It’s a never-ending source of entertainment,” said Jessica Taylor, 31, a nursing assistant in Penacook, N.H., and frequent commenter who was married in July. “I also loved learning what not to do.”
The wedding-shaming trend grew in popularity in mid-2018, when “that’s it, I’m wedding shaming (non ban happy edition)” was born. The founders, Anton Justice and Hannah Chante, were planning their 2020 wedding and looking for ideas. But they couldn’t find anything that spoke to them. “In other groups you get kicked out if you say something negative,” said Mr. Justice, 22, a marketing student in Calgary, Alberta. “It’s better to know what people think rather than lie and be nice about it.”
So he and Ms. Chante, 19, decided to start a forum where people could speak their mind. The group gained traction in August 2018 after the model Chrissy Teigen retweeted the story of a bride who allegedly canceled her wedding after guests refused to pay $1,500 to attend. The group has grown to around 147,000 members worldwide and receives about two million interactions every month, Mr. Justice said. Ancillary shaming groups — targeting things like cakes, dresses, rings and sisters-in-law — have also emerged.
Almost all have guidelines. On the Facebook wedding-shaming groups, faces are blacked out unless the person is in the public eye. Racism, sexism, homophobia and body shaming also are not tolerated. “You don’t want to make anyone feel singled out or attacked personally,” Mr. Justice said. “It’s more about the wedding than the person.”
Sometimes the shaming is reserved for the venue, like when a banquet manager interrupted the newlywed’s first dance to discuss their tab. Other times the shamer is shamed, as a woman was when she complained about a couple’s choice of the secular “Here Comes the Sun” in a Roman Catholic ceremony. (“Someone has never seen ‘Sister Act,’ and it shows,” one commenter wrote.) And sometimes people call themselves out. “I didn’t realize till after how out of the place the groom looked with his pink dress shirt, jeans, and rubber shoes,” one bride wrote of her betrothed. “He looked like he just casually strolled in and happened to get married.”
But other times the masses are the chorus, and the comments can be downright mean. Aleisha McCormack, who runs a private non-shaming wedding group with about 10,000 members, recalled the time someone reposted a photo of one of her members in a shaming group. There were negative comments about the bride’s dress and body shape. “I felt really upset that they promote that they won’t body shame or promote mental illness or focus on these topics and so often they do,” said Ms. McCormack, author of the “Bridechilla” guides. “Some of the comments were just revolting.” She reached out to the administrator, who removed the offensive post.
Anna Bozman Thompson, a stay-at-home parent from Atlanta, had an even more upsetting experience. Ms. Bozman Thompson, now 39, married Travis Thompson, a contractor for Federal Express, in October 2015. Earlier that year, her 8-year-old son from a previous relationship, Lake Bozman, had died of acute myeloid leukemia.
Ms. Bozman Thompson knew she wanted Lake to be a part of the wedding. How to do it? Through photographs. “Pictures are just everything,” she said. “It’s all that I have left of him. So, the pictures for my wedding were the most important thing to me.”
[Sign up for Love Letter and always get the latest in Modern Love, weddings, and relationships in the news by email.]
She contacted Brandy Hayes Angel, who operates Be the Change, Brandy Angel Foundation, which offers free photos to families facing life threatening illnesses. Ms. Angel had taken pictures of Lake in October 2014, and the women had become friends. Ms. Angel’s wedding photos included portraits of the couple, their two surviving children and a Photoshopped, ghostly image of Lake.
“To see him in the pictures with us gave me comfort,” Ms. Bozman Thompson said. “And I did feel he was there. He was a huge part of our ceremony and everything we do. It would have been weird to have had a wedding picture that he wasn’t in.”
A few months later, she shared the image on his Facebook page, “Prayers for Lake Bozman.” The photo went viral. And that’s when the shamers got a hold of it. One woman posted on “that’s it I’m wedding shaming (non ban-happy edition)” that she found the images with Lake “beyond inappropriate.” The post received more than 3,000 comments, some of which also had issue with the photo. (“I’m from Texas and this is still really distasteful and disrespectful and tacky.”) But many others shamed the shamer.
“I couldn’t believe that there’s even such a page,” Ms. Bozman Thompson said. “I was still in my grief. I couldn’t even fathom the things that were being said.”
Ms. Angel was so angry that she posted a response, in which she explained the origin of the photo. “I wanted to put a person to the image, so they would realize that it wasn’t just a picture of no one that they were ridiculing,” she said. “People think they can hide behind their keyboard, say anything and not realize it’s affecting others so deeply. They don’t realize these are real people and real lives. I wanted to hold them accountable.”
Mr. Justice acknowledged that policing the group can be challenging, so he tries to adhere to Facebook’s code of conduct. “We’re not there to control content — we’re a place to be expressive,” he said. “Everybody has a different perspective on what’s offensive.”
He added that when there are especially vicious posts, group members are quick to jump in and educate the posters on why they’re misguided. “It comes out to be a learning experience.”
Suzanne Brooks doesn’t buy it. Ms. Brooks, 40, a boutique owner in Athens, Ga., and a friend of Ms. Angel, finds the whole thing pretty awful.
“Some of the posts are funny and in good fun, but a lot of it is hateful,” she said. She recalled a post about a couple on TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé” in which the couple married in a trailer park, replete with one bottle of champagne and a store-bought birthday cake.
“What do these people do that they have time to sit there and troll people’s weddings?” Ms. Brooks said. “It’s not about dos and don’ts. It’s about making fun of people. Fat shaming. Shaming dresses that are too low cut, too high of a hemline, too trashy. Some people get married in the middle of a trailer park and that’s O.K.! Who gives a (expletive) what people do?”

Seven Artists Who Let Fans Play On Stage With Them
Earlier this week, video went viral of a wheelchair-bound fan who got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join Coldplay on stage in Dublin. The fan, who was lifted above the crowd by other concert-goers who had accidentally fell onto him, was crowdsurfed to the stage where frontman Chris Martin gave him a harmonica. Martin then proceeded to improvise a song about that night’s show with the fan.
You hear about stories like this all the time, where artists let fans come up on stage and play with them. Most of the time these are one-off occurrences, like in the Coldplay story, but there are some bands that make this a part of every show they do. Heck, there are even bands that allow the entire audience to crowd the stage when they play.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves it when the fan experience gets enhanced by crowd participation. That is why we’ve decided to research some interesting stories of fans getting to join their favorite artists on stage. Here are seven that are just too awesome to be true.
1.       Green Day: Green Day started letting fans play with them early in their career and now it’s as expected a piece of their live show as their three-song acoustic encores. After all these years, it seems like it would have to happen that one of these lucky players would become famous themselves. That famous face would be Matt Healy, frontman of The 1975. Healy related in a 2016 interview with Spin that he was pulled on stage at the age of 13 by bassist Mike Dirnt to play with the band.
2.       Bruce Springsteen: Springsteen is another artist who is no stranger to letting fans play on stage with him. Earlier this year, the singer was doing a show in Brisbane, Australia when he saw a sign made by a fan in the front row asking to play “Growin’ Up” with him. Springsteen obliged, giving him some lessons in conducting the band in the process. This is usually something that happens  once-in-a-lifetime, but not for this kid. Four years earlier, the same kid was brought up on stage to play “Waitin’ on a Sunny Day” with The Boss.
3.       The Who: Back in 1973, The Who were at the top of their game, having just released ‘Quadrophenia’ earlier that year. It was also the height of Keith Moon’s drug addiction and at a show in November that year, Moon passed out on stage twice. As the story goes, Pete Townshend asked the crowd if there was anyone out there who could play drums. A fan named Scott Halpin, who had somehow made it side stage before the occurrence, was volunteered by a friend and whisked on stage. Halpin finished the set with them and was given a tour jacket for his help.
4.       Blink-182: Fans love to linger when shows are over. If we can get just one more glimpse of the band, or even one more song, that’s always a plus. One fan earlier this year decided to take it one step further during a recent Blink-182 show, where he decided to jump on stage after the band exited and take a seat at Travis Barker’s drum kit. Mark Hoppis and Matt Skiba then went back on stage, and after telling the crowd to go home, decided to play “Always” with the kid.
5.       Steel Panther: In 2012, a fan decided to come on stage during a Steel Panther show, telling the band that he knew how to play all their songs on guitar. The band proceeded to make fun of his outfit, then gave him a chance to prove himself. The fan then surprised everyone, especially the band, by killing the guitar part of “Eyes Of A Panther.”
6.       Kenny Chesney: Not all on-stage fan interactions are completely musical. During a 2015 concert in New Jersey, Kenny Chesney invited a young girl on stage to sing along with him. The girl ended up not wanting to leave, instead asking for a kiss from the country crooner and following him around the stage for more than 10 minutes. Chesney ended up letting the girl hang out on stage for one more song.
7.       Foo Fighters: At a show in Toronto during the band’s 2015 tour, a fan told Dave Grohl that it was his birthday and that he wanted to play drums with the band. Grohl obliged, letting him take Taylor Hawkins’ seat during “Big Me,” but with the caveat that he better not suck or he will “personally tar and feather” him backstage. Suffice it to say, the fan did alright.
Interaction with fans is an important part of the live show experience. Whether the artist includes such interactions in their shows regularly or not, stories like the ones above, when they happen, are once-in-a-lifetime events. When fans get the opportunity to come up on stage with their favorite artist, it’s a moment that will stay with them forever.

6
The Mountain Goats :: "Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back To Leeds" :: @mountain_goats :: New Album Goths out 5.19.17
Goths, The Mountain Goats' 16th studio album, will be released in May, but they've released the first single early, "Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back To Leeds". Here's band member, John Darnielle commenting on the track:
"This song began its life on a 1973 Guild while I was at the beach a couple of summers back; I wrote the first verse and the chorus and then I put it away. In the darkness of my desk-drawer it gathered strength and plotted its return to the surface. I revisited it after I’d decided to not have any guitars on the next album, and finished writing it on the piano, which accounts for the mild McCartneyisms of the changes in the bridge, which are things I can’t really do on a guitar. In the lyric, I imagine one of my teenage heroes, Andrew Eldritch, returning to the town where the band worked and played when they were young. His friends give him a hard time about ending up back where he started, but not because they’re mad: it’s good to see an old friend wearing the marks of time on his hands and face like well-loved tattoos. So shall it be in these times: your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions, and Andrew Eldritch, whose music has reached spirits in every corner of the globe, will move back to Leeds."
7
Matt Epp & Faouzia :: "The Sound" :: @matteppmusic :: @faouziaofficial
Mentor Matt Epp and Young Performer Faouzia collaborated on a new song “The Sound”.
Every year the Winnipeg Folk Festival presents the Stingray Young Performers Program during the weekend of the festival. Budding musicians from across Canada and the U.S. spend the first day with mentors, chosen from the festival line up, writing and working on their songs and on the second day the participants perform for the festival audience at the Shady Grove stage.
During the 2016 festival, Winnipeg-based musician Matt Epp accepted the offer to be a mentor. “I've always had a special interest in discovering new artists and seeing the advancement of the next line of songwriters and performers,” said Epp.
Epp didn’t know he’d find a new collaboration when he met 16-year-old singer/songwriter, Faouzia who was taking part in the program looking to hone her skills. Faouzia was born in Morocco and raised in the rural town of Carman, Manitoba.
“I got to sit down and hear everyone share their stories and hear them play their songs which only made me realize how rich and diverse the musical world is,” said Faouzia. “I also learned a lot more about the business side of the music industry and I got to hear agents speak about how to contact those that will get you further in your career and strategies to do so as well.”
8
Louie Louie :: "I Wanna Dance With You" :: Facebook Page :: New Album Friend of a Stranger out now
Mod-wop quartet Louie Louie released their Friend of a Stranger LP last month, their debut effort. This Philly based band blasts listeners with classic Phil Spector-era guitar riffs juxtaposed to Emily Robb’s staccato vocals. It’s that play between “cute” arrangements and accents and punk-influenced delivery that makes Louie Louie songs so catchy. I swear this is a new song.
9
Maria Taylor :: "Home" :: @maria_taylor :: New Album In The Next Life out now
Maria Taylor is probably still best known as one-half of Azure Ray, but as a solo artist, she has released a string of reliably great solo albums. Like much of the rest of her discography, “In The Next Life” is a compact, endearing set of songs that gain more depth with repetition. It may often be on the quiet side, but this album resonates.

The Crossing feat. Caroline Shaw :: "To the Hands: No. 6. I Will Hold You" :: @caroshawmusic :: New Album Seven Responses out now
The concept of The Crossing’s latest offering, Seven Responses, sounds creepy to many modern people. In 1680, the great Baroque composer Dietrich Buxtehude composed seven cantatas addressed to the parts of Christ’s body that were centers of pain during the crucifixion. The Crossing’s conductor, Donald Nally, commissioned seven responses to Buxtehude’s cantatas, by seven different composers. Each composer took a different body part, starting with the feet and moving through the knees and side to the face.
Caroline Shaw, the Pulitzer-winning composer, singer and violinist, closes the suite with "i will hold you," a movement of beauty and solace, stillness and swells of interlocking choral parts, all propelled by softly plucked strings.
Near the end, she quotes Buxtehude's tender refrain, "In media manuum tuarum" (In your hands). With the words "I will hold you" repeating, the song acts as musical balm for suffering. If we're in pain, no matter whom we are or what our religious convictions might be, we all need to be held tightly.
"They could be the words of Christ," Shaw writes in the booklet notes, "or of a parent or friend or lover, or even a nation."
