Remove Unwanted Windows Programs & Apps

We tend to install various software on our PC. I too do the same. But many of my installed Windows software(apps) are sitting idle from a very long time as I do not need them anymore. These are the unwanted Windows apps that we need to look for.

You should do the same. Navigate to Settings app > Apps > Apps & features and closely look for any program or apps that you no longer use. I am sure you will find many of them.

You will also be able to see the amount of disk space any program or app consumes on your Windows 10 PC. Go through all the apps and programs by scrolling and Uninstall unwanted apps & programs.

Here is how you can do it.

Using Windows "Add or Remove Programs" setting:

Warning: Do look closely as you do not want to uninstall any system related Windows programs or apps like any audio drivers or any graphics driver interface.

The above method uninstalls the programs or features from your Windows 10 PC. But there are programs that leaves behind garbage Files, Folders or Registry entries even if you completely uninstall it. To take care of this you can use a third party Windows program called Revo Uninstaller. It's free.

Using Revo Uninstaller:

You need to download and install Revo Uninstaller from here. When the download and installation are finished, run Revo Uninstaller. Here is how I am removing an Unwanted Windows program with the help of this useful tool.

On the Revo Uninstaller dashboard select the program that you want to uninstall and click on the Uninstall icon above. (See screenshot)

When you do that the program will create a system restore point in case anything goes wrong. The restore point lets you roll back any changes made on the PC. Once that process is finished, you will see two popups on your screen. One of them is the default program uninstaller. Run the default program uninstaller first.

After that select the Advanced option and click on Scan.

Once the Scan is finished Select All found Leftovers Registry Items and Click Next & Than Finish.

You can repeat the same process for any unwanted application that you wish to remove from your Windows PC. Revo Uninstaller will completely remove all files and folders related to that particular software.

After doing it you will notice the storage space in Windows 10 has increased. Hold on, we are not done yet. Let's see what are the other things you can do to free up drive space in Windows 10.

Erase Windows.old folder to free up drive space in Windows 10

If you upgraded to Windows 10 in the past from older versions of Windows, you should definitely check your system drive i.e. C:/ drive. If you do not see any Windows.old folder than congratulations, you can skip this, and move to the next method. But if you have Windows.old folder sitting in the drive you must delete it.

But wait!

Let me tell you more about that folder. So, when you did an upgrade to Windows 10, your system took a backup of your older Windows OS version automatically. The folder contains all the system files and apps of the previous Windows version build.

The size of the folder may vary from 10GB to 20GB depending on the data. That's a lot of storage space, right? After the upgrade the Windows.old folder remains on your system for almost 30 days.

This is because if something went wrong or you suddenly changed your mind to roll back to the older Windows OS version, the backup is useful. With the help of Windows installer, you can roll back your upgrade. After 30 days Windows automatically deletes the folder.

So before you delete Windows.old folder make sure all your data, settings, apps are still there on the upgraded OS i.e. Windows 10 OS.

It's not simple to delete the Windows.old folder. Right clicking on the folder and selecting "Delete" will not help you in this case. You can erase

Windows.old folder using a third party software called CCleaner or using Command Prompt. I will list down both the methods with details.

Using CCleaner:

CCleaner is very easy to use Windows software. It comes in two variants Free and Paid. for our purpose, Free one is enough.

Note: Not only you can delete the Windows Old Installation directories With the help of CCleaner, you can also perform some other tasks to free up drive space in Windows 10.

For now, let's look at how to use CCleaner to delete Windows.old directory.

Download and install CCleaner from the official site.(Check above for the link).

Launch CCleaner.

As you can see in the above screenshot, make sure you selected "Cleaner" and "Windows" tab.

Scroll down all way to bottom. Under "Advanced" you will find "Old Windows Installation". Just "Checkmark" it and uncheck everything else.

Click on "Analyze" and wait for the program until you see "Analysis Complete".

After that just click on "Run Cleaner". Wait for the process to finish. That's it, the Windows.old folder and all the other older Windows installation files and folders will be erased giving you more storage space on Windows 1o.

Pro Tip: Use Ccleaner to erase other temporary files and cache data from the system. The will let you free up more space on your Windows 10.

Just check the required option, analyze and run cleaner. It's advisable to use this software once in a month to make your Windows system run fast without any lags. I just love this free software.

Using Command Prompt (CMD) Program

CMD is there from the birth of Windows operating system. Though it is mostly liked and used by computer savvy peeps, its not that hard to run some simple set of commands to get the job done.

To launch CMD on Windows 10 Press and hold the Windows Key + R Key.

Type in CMD in the run window and press Enter.

You will see a black window with some text on it.

Just copy and paste: RD /S /Q %SystemDrive%\windows.old command in that window.

Press Enter and the CMD command will be executed.

  If you encountered any error in the CMD window, just make sure you are running Command prompt with administrative privileges.

Check your drive space now. You will notice a whopping change in your storage space.

Many of Windows 10 consumers don't know that there is a handy setting under the System Settings in Windows 10. It lets you free up space by performing a quick scan and letting you choose what to erase. And it can also perform this operation automatically, once you have enabled it.

Let us have a look at the "Storage Sense Setting". Get ready to flush GDs of unwanted data from your computer system and make more space for your PC.

Click the Window icon located at the taskbar and click the Settings icon.

Choose System from the Windows Settings window.

Click on Storage. You will be presented with some very useful options that will never let you go out of storage. Presenting "Storage Sense":

This is where you can turn on "Storage Sense" and let Windows 10 free up space automatically.

If you don't want to use "Windows Sense" and just want to delete unwanted data and get storage space, you can easily do so. If you look at the screenshot above closely there is an option "Free up space now".

This option lets you choose and delete all sorts of data that Windows thinks as erasable without breaking your PC. The data is categorized and a short description is provided under each category for a clear understanding of the Windows 10 user.

Tip: Once you perform all the actions mentioned in this article, do restart your PC. It's not necessary but it's good.

Delete System Restore points:

Windows Create System Restore Points whenever a major change is made on to your system. Most of the time the major change is made when you install Windows updates. These restore points are like backups which can be used to rollback to the earlier build of Windows 10.

So if you are not facing any issues on your Windows 10 PC and everything is fine, go ahead and Check Mark "Delete All System Restore Points" and click on the "Remove Files" button on the top. You know I just free up 10GB of space by removing system restore points.

Delete Downloaded Files:

As said, you should be very careful while trying to free up drive space in Windows 10. You may have downloaded huge size software on your PC for your work. Whatever you download goes in the Download folder on your PC. So before you choose to delete Downloaded files, make sure you have moved your important files to another location on your PC drive.

We all agree, not everything in the Download Folder is important. It may be important when you first downloaded it but not anymore. The Download folder in Windows 10 is the first place you should look to free up storage. Setup files, PDF's, Videos, Audios and what not, all these unused items should be deleted.

Storage Sense is a great feature to use for Windows 10 users. For the users who are still on the older version of the Windows operating system like Windows 7 or 8 and do not have the Storage Sense feature, Just look for the 13 categories as I mentioned above. Remove the data manually and you will be able to clear GBs of storage space.

Working with the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS)

The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) allows you to both federate storage across many computers as well as distribute files in a redundant manor across a cluster. HDFS is a key component to many storage clusters that possess more than a petabyte of capacity.

Each computer acting as a storage node in a cluster can contain one or more storage devices. This can allow several mechanical storage drives to both store data more reliably than SSDs, keep the cost per gigabyte down as well as go some way to exhausting the SATA bus capacity of a given system.

Hadoop ships with a feature-rich and robust JVM-based HDFS client. For many that interact with HDFS directly it is the go-to tool for any given task. That said, there is a growing population of alternative HDFS clients. Some optimise for responsiveness while others make it easier to utilise HDFS in Python applications. In this post I'll walk through a few of these offerings.

The Apache Hadoop HDFS Client

The Apache Hadoop HDFS client is the most well-rounded HDFS CLI implementation. Virtually any API endpoint that has been built into HDFS can be interacted with using this tool.

For the release of Hadoop 3, considerable effort was put into reorganising the arguments of this tool. This is what they look like as of this writing.

The bulk of the disk access verbs most people familiar with Linux will recognise are kept under the dfs argument.

Notice how the top usage line doesn't mention hdfs dfs but instead hadoop fs. You'll find that either prefix will provide the same functionality if you're working with HDFS as an endpoint.

A Golang-based HDFS Client

In 2014, Colin Marc started work on a Golang-based HDFS client. This tool has two major features that stand out to me. The first is that there is no JVM overhead so execution begins much quicker than the JVM-based client. Second is the arguments align more closely with the GNU Core Utilities commands like ls and cat. This isn't a drop-in replacement for the JVM-based client but it should be a lot more intuitive for those already familiar with GNU Core Utilities file system commands.

The following will install the client on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS system.

The release also includes a bash completion script. This is handy for being able to hit tab and get a list of commands or to complete a partially typed-out list of arguments.

I'll include the extracted folder name below to help differentiate this tool from the Apache HDFS CLI.

As you can see, prefixing many GNU Core Utilities file system commands with the HDFS client will produce the expected functionality on HDFS.

The GitHub homepage for this project shows how listing files can be two orders of magnitude quicker using this tool versus the JVM-based CLI.

This start up speed improvement can be handy if HDFS commands are being invoked a lot. The ideal file size of an ORC or Parquet file for most purposes is somewhere between 256 MB and 2 GB and it's not uncommon to see these being micro-batched into HDFS as they're being generated.

Below I'll generate a file containing a gigabyte of random data.

$ cat /dev/urandom \ | head -c 1073741824 \ > one_gig

Uploading this file via the JVM-based CLI took 18.6 seconds on my test rig.

$ hadoop fs -put one_gig /one_gig

Uploading via the Golang-based CLI took 13.2 seconds.

$ gohdfs-v2.0.0-linux-amd64/hdfs put one_gig /one_gig_2

Spotify's Python-based HDFS Client

In 2014 work began at Spotify on a Python-based HDFS CLI and library called Snakebite. The bulk of commits on this project we put together by Wouter de Bie and Rafal Wojdyla. If you don't require Kerberos support then the only requirements for this client are the Protocol Buffers Python library from Google and Python 2.7. As of this writing Python 3 isn't supported.

The following will install the client on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS system using a Python virtual environment.

This client is not a drop-in replacement for the JVM-based CLI but shouldn't have a steep learning curve if you're already familiar with GNU Core Utilities file system commands.

The client is missing certain verbs that can be found in the JVM-based client as well as the Golang-based client described above. One of which is the ability to copy files and streams to HDFS.

That being said I do appreciate how easy it is to pull statistics for a given file.

To collect the same information with the JVM client would involve several commands. Their output would also be harder to parse than the key-value pairs above.

As well as being a CLI tool, Snakebite is also a Python library.

Note I've asked to connect to localhost on TCP port 9000. Out of the box Hadoop uses TCP port 8020 for the NameNode RPC endpoint. I've often changed this to TCP port 9000 in many of my Hadoop guides.

You can find the hostname and port number configured for this end point on the master HDFS node. Also note that for various reasons HDFS, and Hadoop in general, need to use hostnames rather than IP addresses.

Python-based HdfsCLI

In 2014, Matthieu Monsch also began work on a Python-based HDFS client called HdfsCLI. Two features this client has over the Spotify Python client is that it supports uploading to HDFS and Python 3 (in addition to 2.7).

Matthieu has previously worked at LinkedIn and now works for Google. The coding style of this project will feel very familiar to anyone that's looked at a Python project that has originated from Google.

This library includes support for a progress tracker, a fast AVRO library, Kerberos and Pandas DataFrames.

The following will install the client on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS system using a Python virtual environment.

$ sudo apt install \ python \ python-pip \ virtualenv $ virtualenv .hdfscli $ source .hdfscli/bin/activate $ pip install 'hdfs[dataframe,avro]'

In order for this library to communicate with HDFS, WebHDFS needs to be enabled on the master HDFS node.

With the configuration in place the DFS service needs to be restarted.

A configuration file is needed to store connection settings for this client.

A big downside of the client is that only a very limited subset of HDFS functionality is supported. That being said the client verb arguments are pretty self explanatory.

If a single file is downloaded, - can be specified as LOCAL_PATH to stream it to standard out. interactive Start the client and expose it via the python interpreter (using iPython if available). upload Upload a file or folder to HDFS. - can be specified as LOCAL_PATH to read from standard in. Arguments: HDFS_PATH Remote HDFS path. LOCAL_PATH Path to local file or directory. Options: -A --append Append data to an existing file. Only supported if uploading a single file or from standard in. -L --log Show path to current log file and exit. -V --version Show version and exit. -a ALIAS --alias=ALIAS Alias of namenode to connect to. -f --force Allow overwriting any existing files. -s --silent Don't display progress status. -t THREADS --threads=THREADS Number of threads to use for parallelization. 0 allocates a thread per file. The following finished in 68 seconds. This is an order of magnitude slower than some other clients I'll explore in this post.

That said, the client is very easy to work with in Python.

Apache Arrow's HDFS Client

Apache Arrow is a cross-language platform for in-memory data headed by Wes McKinney. It's Python bindings "PyArrow" allows Python applications to interface with a C++-based HDFS client.

Wes stands out in the data world. He has worked for Cloudera in the past, created the Pandas Python package and has been a contributor to the Apache Parquet project.

The following will install PyArrow on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS system using a Python virtual environment.

The Python API behaves in a clean and intuitive manor.

The interface is very performant as well. The following completed in 6 seconds. This is the fastest any client transfer this file on my test rig.

HDFS Fuse and GNU Core Utilities

One of the most intuitive ways to interact with HDFS for a newcomer could most likely be with the GNU Core Utilities file system functions. These can be run on an HDFS mount exposed via a file system fuse.

The following will install an HDFS fuse client on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS system using a Debian package from Cloudera's repository.

Market Watch: MSI’s 2017 Gaming Laptop Lineup Explained

It sometimes feels as though manufacturers name their products at random just to confuse us, but we're here to help. This article is part of a new series called Market Watch that aims to help buyers understand different manufacturers’ naming schemes and the differences between the products they offer.

MSI is one of the few companies in India offering a huge range of gaming laptops. In fact, the company doesn’t sell any other kind, and is happy in its niche. At CES a few days ago, MSI refreshed its entire range to include Intel’s new 7th generation ‘Kaby Lake’ CPUs and some models even got a bump up in the graphics department thanks to Nvidia launching its GeForce GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti for laptops.

With these improvements, many of the new models are more than capable of supporting VR applications and headsets, and that’s reflected in MSI’s naming scheme. Unlike other companies that aim for rock-bottom prices and trim corners everywhere, we also see 4K displays, NVMe SSDs and other high-end features – with matching high-end price tags.

In a rare turn of events, MSI unveiled its new models in India at the same time as they were being shown off at CES, with events in Mumbai and Delhi. MSI sells a huge number of variants in other markets with different screen sizes and GPUs, only a few hand-picked ones are listed for sale in India.

Here’s a quick overview of the new range, and what you can expect if you buy a new gaming laptop now. 

Understanding MSI laptop model numbers Many of MSI’s laptops have names inspired by military terminology, or use words designed to connote power and strength. However, each model also has an alphanumeric identifier which helps you know exactly what you’re getting.

The first two letters tell you what kind of laptop you’re getting. G is ostensibly for gaming, and the sequence from top to bottom is: GT, GS, GE, GP, and GL. The GT models are huge and heavy, and of course the most expensive, while the GL models are much more portable and are also the most affordable.

The next two numbers tell you the screen size – with a few exceptions, the models all have either 17.3-inch or 15.6-inch screens. Higher-end models will have VR at the end of the sequence, telling you that they meet today’s minimum specs to run a VR experience.

The second half of each product’s name tells you what kind of CPU and GPU you’re getting. All models listed here have suffixes beginning with 7, because they all use Intel’s 7th-generation ‘Kaby Lake’ Core CPUs. If the next character is R, you’re getting a 10-series ‘Pascal’ nvidia GPU, and if it’s Q, you’re getting an older 9-series ‘Maxwell’ GPU. Finally, the last character indicates GPU power, so F is more powerful than E, which is more powerful than D.

Finally, some models have their most notable feature appended to their names as well, so you’ll see SLI or 4K on the top-end models, and Pro on those which feature the most capable hardware.

MSI GT series of laptops At the very top of the ladder, the GT series models are all massive beasts, and are meant for those who don’t spare any expense when it comes to gaming. We reviewed the enormous GT80 2QE Titan SLI and GT72 6QD Dominator G last year, and the lineup contains updates to both.

The biggest of the lot is the MSI GT83VR 7RE Titan SLI. It uses Intel’s top-end Core i7-7820HK CPU, which has four cores with Hyper-Threading and runs at up to 3.9GHz with an unlocked multiplier. Graphics capabilities are handled by two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 cards in SLI, and there’s 32GB of dual-channel DDR4 RAM. The display is an 18.4-inch full-HD panel with a matte finish for reduced reflections. There are two 512GB NVMe SSDs in RAID for a super-fast boot drive as well as a 1TB hard drive for additional storage and a Blu-ray writer if you still need to use optical media.

The other defining feature of this model is its mechanical Steelseries keyboard, which uses Cherry MX Speed Silver switches and has RGB backlighting. You also get one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port, and Killer 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet. Keep in mind that this “laptop” needs two enormous power bricks and weighs 5.5kg. All of this comes for a cool Rs. 3,49,990.

A little bit lower down the price ladder, there’s the MSI GT73VR 7RF Titan Pro 4K at Rs. 3,34,990. As its name suggests, it has a 4K screen, which measures 17.3 inches. The tradeoff for that is a single GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. Most of the other specifications are the same, including the CPU, RAM, storage setup, and connectivity, except for the lack of an optical drive, and a more traditional RGB laptop keyboard. The GT73VR 7RF Is slightly slimmer and lighter at 4.14kg as well.

Rounding out the premium tier is the MSI GT72VR 7RE Dominator Pro. This laptop has a price tag of Rs. 2,19,990 and weighs 'only' 3.78kg. The specs step down proportionately, so you get a 3.8GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB of RAM, a single GeForce GTX 1070, and a single 256GB SSD plus the 1TB hard drive. The monitor is a 17.3-inch full-HD panel and you do get a Blu-ray writer.

MSI GE series of laptops For enthusiasts who don’t have bottomless wallets, MSI offers the GE series. You still get the latest hardware, but there are fewer frills.

The MSI GE72MVR 7RG Apache Pro offers a Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD plus 1TB hard drive. This particular model has a GTX 1070 GPU and a 17.3-inch full-HD screen, and costs Rs. 1,85,990. There are also variants with the GeForce GTX 1060, and the brand new GTX 1050 Ti, with 15.6-inch full-HD screens. The GE62VR 7RF (15.6-inch, GTX 1060) is priced at Rs. 1,39,990 and the GE62 7RE (15.6-inch, GTX 1050 Ti, which notably costs it the “VR” tag) sells for Rs. 1,29,990.

We reviewed last year’s MSI GE62 6QD Apache Pro model and found it to be an excellent choice except for the lack of an SSD, which appears to have been fixed in this year’s lineup.

MSI GS series of laptops MSI sells only one GS model in India, and it’s smaller and lighter than the ones listed so far because it ditches some of the high-end hardware options which would have required heavy-duty cooling systems. It’s designed for people who want to carry a laptop around every day and do more with it than just play games. The MSI GS63VR 7RF Stealth Pro, priced at Rs. 1,77,990, is the direct successor to the MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro which we reviewed just a few months ago. As its suffix suggests, it uses a 7th-gen Intel CPU rather than the 6th generation.

You get a Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD plus a 1TB hard drive, and a GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. The screen is a 15.6-inch full-HD panel, and you also get Thunderbolt 3. All of MSI’s new models up to this point come with a gaming bag and a two-year warranty.

MSI GP series of laptops There’s a considerable price drop when stepping down to the GP series, which makes these models a lot more attractive to mainstream gamers. There’s a definite emphasis on value, and you might not be able to push the latest games at their absolute highest quality settings. Note that VR has been dropped from the model names, as the specifications might not allow for a reasonable VR experience.

Interestingly, there are two models with the exact same name, MSI GP62 7RD Leopard, and they have only one very subtle difference. The model priced at Rs. 1,09,990 has a GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 4GB of VRAM while the model priced at Rs. 1,05,990 has the same GPU with only 2GB of VRAM. All other specifications are the same.

You get a Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD plus 1TB hard drive, and a 15.6-inch full-HD screen. The Wi-Fi controller is powered by Intel rather than Killer, and the keyboard backlight is only white rather than RGB. There’s also a Type-C USB port but it runs only at USB 3.0 speed (5Gbps), not USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps). All that comes in a package weighing 2.4kg. You get the two-year warranty, but not the gaming bag.

MSI GL series of laptops These are MSI’s most basic models, and they are priced right within the sweet spot that many buyers in India look for. If you have the budget for a premium laptop, you could easily afford one of these. However, the spec sheet is relatively sparse.

The MSI GL62M 7RD model retains the 7th-generation Core i7-7700HQ CPU and 15.6-inch full-HD panel that its bigger siblings have, but steps down to 8GB of RAM and a 1TB mechanical hard drive with no SSD. The GPU is a GeForce GTX 1050 with 2GB of VRAM. There’s also no keyboard backlighting or Steelseries endorsement.

This model is priced at Rs. 89,990 but you can get the GL62 7QF model with a previous-generation GeForce GTX 960M GPU for Rs. 76,990 if you’re willing to step down, which isn’t really recommended.

MSI P and C series of laptops MSI doesn’t really sell non-gaming laptops in India, because it would rather not compete with mainstream brands. However, recognising that there is a market for reasonably priced premium laptops which can also handle light gaming, there are two more options: the MSI PE60 7RD and the MSI CX62 7QL.

The first of these has the same Core i7-7700HQ CPU as its far more expensive siblings, matched with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU. There’s 16GB of RAM and a 15.6-inch full-HD screen. Storage is only mechanical, in the form of a 1TB hard drive. Interestingly, it has a white backlit keyboard. It has a silver metallic body that stands out from the rest of the lineup which is all black and red. It’s priced at Rs. 84,990 but comes with only a one-year warranty.

The lowest-end machine of the entire lineup is the MSI CX62 7QL, and it uses a low-power Core i5-7500U CPU with a previous-gen GeForce GTX 940MX GPU, which should just about be able to handle very basic games. This is also the only model with a low screen resolution of 1366x768 pixels, but it does still have 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. It’s priced at Rs. 53,990 and has a one-year warranty.
