DAMN. Just finished chapter 17 of Firefight and whooh. I cannot articulate how excited and thrilled I am for this new direction. I love your Death Wish fic and i'll be absolutely damned if I don't continue to love this one with just as much, if not more, fervor. You're an incredible writer. You immerse me in the environments, the sensations, the inner workings, and the emotions of these characters while your words seep both their souls and yours. I really just wanted to tell you how enjoyed your writing is. I look forward to each update with patience and support, and if you chose to end it, life got in the way, or any other reason, I would continue to support you as a writer and artist while repeatedly reading your works. Death Wish is the length of a decent novel and I've reread it about 4 times, each experience unique and loved because there's always something new and poignant to find in your writing. There's so much love and intent in your work, and it's so greatly appreciated. You're my favorite fic writer, thank you for all that you do. Keep doing what you love!!
waghs at you quietly. dude thank you so much you are far too kind to me aaaaaaaa
i have still a LOT of firefight to go!!!! there’s gonna be a planned hiatus in april as i am going away but i have never once abandoned a story and i won’t start now LMAO

___________
I'm excited to finish writing Chapter 26 because at the end of Chapter 25, the Diaz family had just returned to the U.S. and after they made it home, Eddie checked his voice mail and there was a message from his cousin about an attempted delivery of a SpedEx package for Buck. Buck had no idea who it was from and he worried about it all weekend into the New Year.
They attended Maddie's and Chimney's New Year's Eve party which turned out to be an engagement party for them but they told their found family they got married while they were in Italy and that Buck adopted Chris on Christmas morning. Everyone questioned them regarding why the didn't tell anyone about their nuptials but they reassured them they're going to have a vow renewal ceremony in May of 2024 so they can all celebrate with them. But they didn't tell them they put a bid on a house in Italy and they aren't planning to until they believe the time is right.
On January 2nd, Buck accepted the package from the SpedEx delivery driver and after he opened it and viewed the contents, he collapsed and became unresponsive and unconscious right after Eddie entered the room.
___________
Here's a snippet from Chapter 26 of Eddie panicking and calling emergency services.
___________
Even though Eddie doesn’t have an ECG machine in his medical bag, he knows the signs and symptoms associated with a bradycardia event and that’s exactly what he believes Buck’s experiencing.  It’s been more than a minute and a half since his eyes closed and he’s worried out of his mind. He’s been counting the seconds ever since he put the pillows underneath his head and his ankles and he’s still counting but now he’s reached two minutes and Buck's entering the danger zone and he needs to get help fast.
For a brief moment, he considers lifting him up, carrying him to the truck and driving to the hospital but he knows that’s his heart talking instead of his rational mind which is filled with LAFD protocols and his paramedic training.
He doesn’t have any of the necessary equipment needed to revive him and if his husband dies on his watch, he’ll die too and that’s not an option.  He's already lost one spouse and Chris has lost one parent and him and Buck promised each other they're going to die on the same day at the same time 50 or 60 years from now, so he has to act quickly. Instead of continuing his mental debate about if he should call emergency services or drive Buck himself, he removes his phone from his pocket, dials 9-1-1 and waits for what seems like an eternity.
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”
“Yes I’m at 4995 S. Bedford St. and I have an adult male, 31 years of age whose unconscious and unresponsive and I need medical response.”
“Ok sir, can I get your name?”
“Eddie Diaz!  I’m a firefighter and a paramedic with the 118.”
“Eddie!”  Linda asks.
“Yes!  Linda, I’m so glad it’s you.”  He heaves past the sob lodged in the back of his throat that feels like a ping pong ball and continues.  “Listen, it’s Buck… SHIT!”  He stops talking because he remembers he's supposed to follow protocol for her recording and he tries again.  “I mean you need his first and last name for the call.  It’s my husband Evan Diaz and he’s also a firefighter with the—the 118.”
“Ok Eddie, I’m checking to see which RA unit is the closest to that address but can you tell me what happened?”
“I—I came into the living room; he was swaying back and forth and I caught him before he—he hit the floor.  I manually checked his vitals by doing the ABC method… I opened his airway, checked his breathing along with his circulation then I—I grabbed my medical bag and I checked his pulse, his blood pressure and his heart rate but all of them are still low which is why I believe he might be having a bradycardia event.  Linda… oh my god, whatever is happening to him is more serious than a syncope event because he’s still unresponsive.”
“Can you tell me how long he’s been down?”
“It’s been more than two minutes but I didn’t start counting until after I caught him.”
“Ok, Eddie, our closest unit is about 6 minutes away.”
He frowns and loudly asks, “Six minutes?  Why?!  I’m sorry please—please forgive me for being loud but I... I—I’m asking because there’s a firehouse less than 4 minutes from here.”  He feels like he’s about to jump out of his skin because the proximity of their home to the closest fire station in this area is one of the reasons he decided to purchase it.  He wanted to be close to one for Chris just in case they ever have to call.
“You’re right Eddie there is but they’re returning to their station from a call and they’re caught in a backup on the I-110 and…”
He interrupts her.  “Linda, I—I can’t wait any longer so… I’m going to pick him up and drive him to the hospital myself…”
“Eddie?!”
He keeps talking and he thinks he can hear Sue talking in the background too but in this moment, he needs to get his husband the help he needs.  He says, “Linda, I need to…”
“EDDIE!”  She calls his name again but louder this time because she needs to get his attention.
The panic he feels is threatening to escape his lungs and he wants to scream but he swallows it again and responds, “Yeah?”
“Eddie, listen to me.  I know it’s hard but I need you to remain calm.  Are you listening?”
Eddie’s practically hysterical but what is he going to do next? 🥹
Will he listen to Linda and follow protocol or will he pick Buck up and carry him to the hospital himself? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Chapter 7 - After Buck’s mental breakdown, Eddie has his back the same way Buck had his when he had his own breakdown more than a year ago.  They share several vulnerable and emotionally intimate moments with one another and they begin to realize their small, sweet and caring gestures matter just as much if not more than any grand gesture ever could because these are the foundations of a long-lasting love relationship.

Chapter 11 - A “virga” or dry thunderstorm is in the forecast but once the rain starts, the thunderstorm happening outside won’t be able to match the storm brewing inside between Buck and Eddie.  It’s the universe’s final scream and when the tumultuous winds begin to blow, they’ll have one last chance to hold onto everything they’ve built over the last six years or they’ll lose it all forever.

Chapter 13 - While navigating the newness of their romantic relationship, Buck and Eddie take advantage of every moment they spend together. Chapter 14 - Buck and Eddie can see the lights at the end of the tunnels regarding the results of Buck’s Cancer Screening along with everything else they’re dealing with. Chapter 15 - Buck and Eddie have known they were exactly who the other one wanted in a partner since they met six years ago when they agreed to have each other’s backs. Even though Chris is still the only person they’ve told about their relationship, several people who know them have already witnessed the love they share and as the days continue, others will witness it too.
Chapter 17 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to departing Los Angeles for their international adventure, a moment in time will remind them; life is fragile, tomorrow isn’t promised and every second of everyday should be cherished because everything can change in an instant. The result of that realization will cause them to hold onto each other even more.
Chapter 18 - As Buck, Eddie and Chris prepare for family gatherings before and during the Thanksgiving holiday, the “Santa Ana Winds” start to blow and all sorts of expected and unexpected familial drama ensues.
Chapter 19 - As Buck and Eddie get closer to their wedding day, the universe begins to align everything so that some of their parent and children's relationships are strengthened while others come to an abrupt end.
Chapter 20 - With only 14 days remaining until Buck, Eddie and Chris depart Los Angeles, CA traveling to Rome, Italy, for their first family adventure, an early morning conversation about “tying up loose ends” helps Buck and Eddie realize there are still several things left unfinished on their ‘To Do’ lists. The question is will there be enough time to complete all of them?
Chapter 21 - Buck, Eddie and Chris are finalizing their ‘To Do’ Lists, double checking their itineraries and packing their suitcases in preparation for their trip to Europe so they can board their flight that departs Los Angeles, CA on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 3:25PM.
Chapter 22 - While Buck, Eddie and Chris spend the first 8 days of their European family adventure in Italy, their primary reason for going will be fulfilled as well as several others they hadn’t considered or anticipated.
Chapter 23 - As the Diaz Family continues their Italian family adventure, they’ll say, “Ciao” or hello and goodbye to a lot of things almost immediately after they become an official and legal family.
Chapter 24 - After Buck, Eddie and Chris arrive in London, England on December 24th; the Diazes immediately start preparing to spend their first family Christmas together. During their stay, each of them will hear a few choice words that will be the life raft to get them home to complete their searches to be seen and to be found.
Chapter 25 - After spending more than two weeks in Europe, Eddie, Buck and Chris are back in Los Angeles and they’re getting ready to attend Maddie and Chimney’s New Year’s Eve party. During the event, they have plans to make two surprise announcements but the question is, who’s really going to be surprised, the Diaz family or their found family at the 118?

read part one
word count: 3.1k
warnings: some angst, some sadness, best friend rooster!!! (or maybe... 👀 hehe no I’m kidding, unless 👀) seriously we all deserve a roo in our lives. I’ve given reader a callsign in this one, meet birdy!!
Tumblr media
The Hard Deck roared with life just as it usually did on a weekend, various Navy personnel and civilians alike celebrating the conclusion of another week but the chatter and music didn’t quite reach your ears as you sat sandwiched between Rooster and Bob nursing a lukewarm cider as your mind was somewhere entirely different. Somewhere softer and sweeter, a moment you had replayed probably a thousand times over the last two weeks.
“Jake, I’m serious, cut it out!” you squealed, grabbing a pillow to defend yourself from his ruthless attacks but it was no use, it was tossed aside before you could even attempt to hit him as his fingers continued tickling into your sides and pulling giggles from your lips that were like music to his ears. They were so pure and unfiltered, a sound of amused joy though you were doing your best to convey otherwise. He finally rested, giving you a moment to catch your breath and he couldn’t help but chuckle as you immediately tensed below him feeling his hands snake across your waist to pull you closer.
“I come in peace, I promise.” he whispered into your hair, pressing kisses along your collarbone and you sighed in content.
“You’re a pain in my ass,” your words were entirely convincing as he looked up to see the smile tugging at the corners of your mouth and you looked at him as if he’d hung all the stars in the sky.
“Yeah, but you love me anyways.” He continued kissing along the expanse of your exposed skin.
“Unfortunately.” Though it wasn’t unfortunate at all. He made his way up to your face, brushing your hair back that had been left awry after your unsuccessful attempts to squirm away from his attacks to lay kisses along your cheekbones.
“I love you too, Birdy.”
And then when you awoke, he was gone. No note, no trace, and your logical explanation had been he decided to hit the gym before meeting you on base. Something that happened so frequently you didn’t even question it as you went about your morning. Suspicion didn’t creep in until he wasn’t there in the locker room to greet you, no quip about you slacking on your workouts and leaving you in the dust, and certainly no teasing in your ear as you ran drills in the air all day. But this could be explained, right? When you arrived home and noticed that there were in fact some of his things missing, essential things like toothbrushes and his favorite tee shirts you thought something must have happened back home, an emergency that left him running to the airport without time to even wake you, he’d call you just as soon as he could to tell you everything… but that never came. So now here you were, two weeks later in the Hard Deck as you grappled with the fact that he wasn’t ever coming back. There was no explanation.
Rooster and Bob were having a silent conversation that you didn’t pick up on until suddenly Rooster’s hand on your knee broke you from your thoughts. “So uh, have you heard from Jake yet?” He grunted as Bob reached behind you to hit him in the arm, clearly that wasn’t what Bob had in mind when he encouraged him to engage you in some kind of conversation to get you out of your head… a place they both could only assume wasn’t really a good place to be right now.
“What do you think?” you replied, setting down your glass.
“I’m sorry.”
“No sense in apologizing for something you didn’t do, Rooster.” You got up rather suddenly, muttering something about the cider being useless as you went to seek out Penny at the bar who greeted you with a bright smile.
“Hey sweetheart, what can I get you?”
“Something strong,” you sighed and she quickly rimmed a shot glass with salt before pouring top shelf tequila and topping it off with a lime wedge.
“Might as well be efficient, right?” You gave her a smile before throwing it back, welcoming the burn as it slid down your throat. The burn reminded you that you were in fact here and alive, and the alcohol coursing through your veins helped you return back to your old self even if only a little bit. Maverick watched with worry in his eyes, shooting Penny a look that she nodded away. Penny had been everything you needed her to be these last two weeks. She was no stranger to being left hanging by cocky flyboys, but what she wouldn’t tell you is what Jake had done far surpassed anything Maverick had ever pulled with her… at least Maverick would give her a heads up, even if only a brief email or phone call. This was something else entirely but she chose to ignore that, and showed up in all the right ways. She always poured exactly what you asked for, knowing the right moment to make you a mocktail with a drop of alcohol in the straw and she never asked you about anything you didn’t provide to her first. Everyone else walked on eggshells around you, not sure of how to act or what to say, and always somehow asked the wrong questions at the wrong times but you couldn’t even blame them. You knew they were trying their best and you don’t know what you would do if the roles were reversed.
You returned to your friends, arranging the pool table for a new round and Coyote offered to play with you. You tried to hide your grimace, you felt bad for the cold shoulder you’d been giving him. It wasn’t Coyote’s fault, he was just as shocked as you had been but it didn’t change the fact that you knew he’d talked to him, knew where he was and maybe even knew the reason. They were facts that were difficult to reconcile but you gave him a forced smile anyways as Rooster made his way down to the bar to talk with Penny in hushed tones as he often found himself doing these days.
“I don’t want to hear it, Bradley, she’s fine.”
“She’s not fine, Penny. I’m honestly getting scared, she’s either here drinking herself half to death or she’s locked away in her room in the pitch black refusing to speak with anyone.”
“It’s been two weeks, she only really accepted things a few days ago. Give her time.” He looked over to see you lining up your shot as you leaned over the table, smiling as he saw a glimpse of the old you… someone so bright and vibrant, the life of every room you walked into, drawing people to you like moths to a flame. But it was extinguished just as soon as it appeared as you sank your ball and looked up to realize it wasn’t your usual opponent on the other side of the table.
“Cyclone and I talked about grounding her, she’s a risk to herself right now.”
“Do that and you might as well put the final nail in the coffin, Mav.” Penny said, sliding a glass down the bar and shaking her head as the two men looked at her horrified. “I’m serious. There were two things in this world that got Birdy out of bed: flying and Jake Seresin. She already lost one, don’t take away the other. Just give her time, things will turn around.”
But the thing was… they didn’t. Weeks turned into months and everyone watched as you became just a shell of the girl you once were, moments where your laughter would have rang out above everyone else’s were silent and bets amongst teammates were all but ignored. You were as good as you always were in the air, not wanting to give anyone any room to take something else away from you, though you were a little more ruthless. The first deployment had everyone on edge as you put yourself into danger within the first few minutes of the mission, pulling out unnecessary maneuvers that should have ended with you and your aircraft in a million little pieces, and you didn’t even get the reprimand everyone had been hoping for when you arrived back to base because it was that behavior that made the mission a success and you went without the reality check they desperately thought you needed. Nobody knew what to do, and even Penny had reached the point where she was starting to get a little concerned. At month seven there was a knock on your door in the late evening hours that quickened your pace and got your hopes up though logically you knew you would only be disappointed when you opened the door to reveal Rooster.
You wordlessly stepped aside to allow him in as you resumed your previous position on the couch. There was a glass of water in front of you and nothing playing on the TV and Rooster had to take a deep breath to calm his reaction to seeing you this way. He set a beer in front of you and flicked on ESPN to watch game highlights just as the two of you had done every night the last few months. Rooster was at a loss and was showing up in the only way he knew how to. His heart was completely broken seeing you this way, his best friend he once considered the strongest person he had ever met so thoroughly broken by Jake Seresin. It filled him with anger and made him sick to his stomach but he would never show you that. He would wait until you finished your beer, taking the empty bottle to the kitchen and turning off the TV and all of the lights, gently pulling you up and down the hall where the two of you would brush your teeth in your bathroom before he would help you into bed and take up his spot on the couch. Tonight was different though.
“Roo?” It was the first word you’d spoken since he arrived an hour ago and at first he thought he was imagining it as he pulled the covers over you but he knew he wasn’t once he saw you looking up expectantly at him.
“Yeah, Birdy?”
“Can you uh… I’m sorry, nevermind.” You shook your head as you went to settle in but he placed a hand over yours, eager to do whatever it was you were about to ask of him. You hadn’t asked him or anyone else for anything since Jake had left and he was ready to chip away at this crack you had revealed to him.
“Come on, what is it?” he asked gently and when you looked back to him he could see the fine mist coating your eyes and sending pangs through his heart.
“Can you stay? I haven’t- I can’t sleep and I just… I really want to sleep.” Your voice broke on the last word and before his brain could fully catch up he was kicking off his jeans and sliding into the other side of the bed, careful to keep enough distance to not spook you but that was thrown to the wind when you reached for him. He was quick to pull you into his side and hold you as close as he could. You had dodged everyone's attempts at physical contact with you and he silently wondered when the last time you had this kind of comfort was. The realization it was likely the last night Jake was in this bed with you had him squeezing tighter. You wrapped an arm around him and nuzzled into his chest when he heard it, the sniffles you were trying to conceal.
“Birdy, please talk to me,” he whispered as he pressed a kiss to your forehead, “come on, you can’t keep bottling this up.”
“That last night was perfect.” you said, and he stayed silent, deciding to let you get it out at your own pace and in your own time. “We spent the night with you guys at the bar, we came home and made terrible microwave nachos, and then we stumbled to bed and had sex, honestly really bad drunk giggly sex but that’s what made it good, and then we stayed up talking about nothing in particular. He told me he loved me and we fell asleep and then just like that he was gone. I mean, how do you go from that to vanishing into thin air?” You had never told anyone this, what happened that night when you two left had been a silent question of the entire group but no one wanted to ask you. Because you were right, the night had been perfect. Everyone had an amazing time at the bar and when you yelled out that you wanted nachos Jake was quick to sweep you off your feet and get you home so you could have them. Watching you leave they all thought to themselves they wanted something like that, they wanted the kind of love that flowed so generously between the two of you.
“I wish I could tell you, Birdy.” he sighed, rubbing reassuring circles into your waist as your fist balled up the fabric of his shirt. He felt your frame begin to shake as you finally let out what you had been holding in this whole time, sobs wracking your body and Rooster just held on tight, whispering reassurances in your ear and telling you to let it all go.
“I just don’t know why I wasn’t enough to make him stay,” you whimpered and Rooster’s heart cracked wide open. He shifted, sitting up slightly and pulling you with him as cradled your face and wiped the tears that showed no signs of stopping.
“No. Birdy, you are enough. You are everything and if he didn’t see that it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with him. This is not your failure, it’s his.”
You shook your head, “I just… I keep replaying all these moments, trying to pinpoint where it went wrong, when he made his decision and I can’t- I can’t find it. There are supposed to be warning signs, it just doesn’t make sense.” Another sob overtook you and Rooster pulled you back in, letting you drape your weight across him and wishing he could do more. He adjusted the both of you back into a lying position and enveloped you in his arms, and when your sobs quieted and your breathing evened out he carefully snagged his phone from the nightstand and texted Maverick, telling him he finally got through and the two of you wouldn’t be on base tomorrow, he wanted to make sure you had plenty of time to catch up on sleep.
Things did finally start getting better. Rooster took a mile with the inch you gave him and you spent your nights wrapped up under covers with him as you finally let him in and the days held glimpses of your old self. Smiles became more genuine, you weren’t as reckless in the air, and you even laughed at Fanboy’s dumb jokes once in a while. It wasn’t perfect, not by a longshot. Rooster held you tight each and every night so you could finally get the first peaceful sleep you’ve had in months, gently shaking you awake when a nightmare rattled your frame but night by night it got better. He eventually returned to his place on the couch, and then one day something changed and you didn’t need him in the house at all. Everyone knew you were still healing, still recovering but you had turned the corner.
And when Jake suddenly reappeared at the Hard Deck just as suddenly as he had left you took it in stride. Everyone subtly watched as your two figures sat on the beach just beyond the window and waited for you to break, but that moment never came. When you returned and took Rooster’s beer from his hand they thought you would be angry, maybe at least cry, but you didn’t. You went right back to heckling Pheonix at the pool table as if it had never happened, but Rooster knew. When he drove you back to your place he sensed the silent turmoil waging a war on your mind, and walking into the foyer of your home you didn’t even need to ask. He followed you down the hall, where the pair of you settled into bed and you crawled into the arms that had grown to feel like a second home to you.
“He said he was sorry,” you finally said, breaking the silence.
“Do you believe him?”
You shrugged against him, “I don’t know. He said he still loves me.”
“Did he say why he left?”
“I didn’t ask.” You nuzzled your face further into his chest, eyes growing heavy as he rubbed your back.
“I’m really proud of you, Birdy.” You looked up at this, giving him a soft smile as he looked down at you.
“I don’t know if I’ve told you this or not, but thank you.”
“What for?” He raised an eyebrow at you.
“For this. For being here, for giving up several months of your life to constantly be here.”
“Nowhere else I’d be, Birdy.” You laid your head back down and absentmindedly rubbed your thumb along his chest.
“I promise you one day you won’t have to sleep at my place.”
“I mean it, Birdy, there’s nowhere else for me to be until you don’t need me here.”
“You’re my best friend, you know that?”
“I’d sure hope so,” he chuckled and you laughed with him. “What are you going to do?”
“There’s not much I can do. He’s restationed with us so… I guess figure out how to coexist. I just… I don’t get it. He leaves, I don’t hear from him for a year, then he just shows up saying he’s back and that he still loves me.”
You felt him shake his head above you, “I don’t get it either, and don’t hurt me for saying this but I think you should talk to him.”
“Seriously? What happened to all that ‘him leaving is explanation enough and you don’t need him’ shit you’ve been telling me?”
“Seriously. I know you, Birdy, you can’t be around him without getting to the bottom of it. If you don’t ask him why he left, all the progress you’ve made the last few months is going to go out the window.”
You sighed, “I know.”
“Plus, I’m fully invested right now, I also need to know.” he teased and you playfully swatted his chest.
“Go to sleep before I push you off this bed, Bradshaw.” you laughed.
“Goodnight, Birdy.”

Oscar slipped through the door, his steps heavy with the weight of the night. As the Santos leader, he often returned battered—sometimes his bruises were hidden, sometimes they were painfully visible. This time, the fight had left its mark, bruises coloring his face, and a fresh cut above his brow. You were there waiting, taking his hand and guiding him to sit down as you grabbed the first-aid kit.
“Oscar,” you murmured, your voice tender as you pressed a damp cloth over his bruised cheek, wiping away dried blood and grime. The tension in his shoulders softened slightly, and he let you care for him, though the fight’s weight lingered in his eyes.
“You don’t have to do this alone,” you continued, searching his gaze, hoping he’d understand.
Oscar’s jaw clenched, his tough exterior wavering for a moment. “Comes with the territory,” he muttered, but as he spoke, a flicker of vulnerability broke through. He looked at you, his resolve cracking just enough for you to glimpse the weariness he usually hid so well.
His guard dropping was a rare sight, but you could see it now. The unspoken exhaustion, the late nights, the toll of every bruise he bore—it was all there, plain as day, etched into his face like battle scars he wore as much for himself as he did for the Santos.
“You have an entire crew,” you whispered, tracing a fingertip along his bruised cheek, careful not to cause him more pain. “They rely on you, Oscar, but you don’t have to throw yourself into every fight. They can stand on their own.”
A hint of conflict crossed his face. Oscar was the one who took on everyone’s weight; he led, he protected, and he fought when others couldn’t. The responsibility he carried as Santos leader was more than anyone could bear, yet he never flinched. Still, your words cut through, chipping away at his stubborn pride.
His hand, rough and scarred, reached up to cover yours. “I don’t want them to carry what I do,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, almost like he was admitting it to himself as much as to you. “And I don’t want you to have to worry.”
“But I do,” you replied softly, thumb grazing over his knuckles. “Every time you come home like this… bruised, bleeding. I know you’re their leader, but I need you here too.”
He let out a sigh, looking down as your words settled over him. As the leader, he’d always shouldered the heaviest weight, knowing he was the one to protect his family, to make sure everyone was safe. But the worry in your eyes reminded him that you needed him just as much as the Santos did.
When you finished tending to his wounds, you placed a soft kiss on his knuckles. “Just… try to be careful,” you whispered, voice trembling with the concern you couldn’t hide. He reached out, thumb brushing your cheek.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he promised, his voice steady, a vow made only to you. As the leader of the Santos, he had enemies, responsibilities, battles that wouldn’t end. But tonight, in this quiet moment, he was just Oscar—yours to hold, to protect as much as he protected you. And though he’d face whatever was waiting outside, he’d always make his way back home to you.

Summary: Thoma and you promised each other to spend the Christmas alone together and to not buy any gifts this year. When Ayaka accidentally tells you he has something planned, you want to do some last minute gift-shopping, but the snow storm seems to have picked up and you’re running out of time!
A/n: Hi hi! I’m quickly breaking my hiatus to post this for the winter event of @dustofthedailylife!! I really liked the prompts but my life turned upside down so it ended up really hard for me to write this TuT But I hope it’s at least fun for one person! XD Anyways- I’ll be off till the new years most likely :) Sorry for the long wait!
Prompts used: “I guess we’re stuck here until the snow dies down.” & “This is the best gift I’ve ever received in my entire life” - both altered slightly to fit the story better.
Tumblr media
“Are you kidding me?”
The storm outside seems worse than before. The wind has picked up and snowflakes race down from above, a few landing on the glass window in the door before they melt.
You feel your boyfriend Thoma place his hands on your waist before he gently pulls you back into his chest.
“I guess you’re stuck here with me until the snow dies down.”
If it wasn’t for your thick winter coat and the two scarfs he had wrapped around you, you could’ve turned around to see the soft smile on his face moments before he buried his face into the crook of your neck.
Around an hour ago, you had gotten ready for some last minute gift shopping. You both weren’t planning to buy any this year, but after Ayaka accidentally told you Thoma had plans to give you something after all, you wanted to return the favour.
You wonder why he bought you a gift.
Wasn’t it his idea in the first place to stay at home and ‘take things easy’?
“I can’t believe the storm decided to pick up right now! It’s been calm the whole day, and right before I wanted to go shopping it had to pick up again.”
You turn around in Thoma’s arms to lock eyes with him.
He’s wearing a red Christmas sweater with two reindeers on it– one similar to the one you’re wearing under your coat. His hair is messier than most days and his headband is discarded.
Thoma’s eyes soften a moment before his hands move up to your face.
“I told you, I don’t need any gifts.”
He gently cups your cheeks before placing a kiss on your nose.
“But I want to give you one.” You place your own hands over his, “You deserve it! You’ve been working so hard lately, and I know you’re already happy but-”
You sigh.
There’s no winning this argument. Not when all the shops close for Christmas tomorrow, and definitely not with the blizzard outside.
He presses another kiss on your cheek and pulls you in closer. “I don’t need any gifts, because you’re the best gift I’ve ever received in my life.”
He places his forehead against yours. You stay silent like that for a moment before he continues,
“Well…second best.”
You gasp as you pull back to look him in the eyes.
“Taroumaru places above me?” You place a hand against your chest to feign hurt.
“You have to admit, he’s very cute!” Thoma lifts his hands up in the air as he laughs. You gently push him against the shoulder and cross your arms over your chest.
“Maybe I don’t feel so bad for you after all.”
Thoma smiles and captures your hand. “Let’s get that coat off of you, alright?”
“Want me to make us some hot chocolate?” You wiggle your way out of your coat as Thoma gently removes the scarf from your neck.
“I’ll be with you in a minute, alright?”
As Thoma hangs up your coat and scarf, he can hear you rummage around in the kitchen. A few cabinets open before they close, and he can hear you getting a pan to warm the milk in.
You’re really the best lover he could ever wish for.
He stands still in the hallway for a moment. His hand moves to the small box in his pocket.
He really hopes you’ll accept his gift on Christmas and become his partner for life.

Dad Mirio continues to live rent-free in my head 24/7
Sometimes you wonder if your husband is even human. It’s been almost two weeks since you gave birth, and Mirio’s barely let you lift a finger since you went into labor. He’s handled every diaper change, every late night feeding, and every chore around the house before you can even begin to sit up. He’s always had a ridiculous amount of energy, but it’s starting to border on manic at this point. You don’t know when he’s had the chance to sleep, it feels like he’s always ready to jump up in a rush to do anything he can for you.
You know most people would be thrilled to have a partner ready and waiting to serve their every need, but it’s getting a little overwhelming every time he gently shoos you away when you try to help wash dishes or fold the laundry. It’s not how he normally acts, and you decide to get to the bottom of this mystery sooner rather than later.
It’s nearly three in the morning when you hear Tomo crying from his crib at the end of your bed and Mirio’s instantly hopping up to fetch a bottle. “You go back to sleep, I got it,” he announces brightly, and you reach out to grab his arm before he leaves.
“No, let me get this one. I’m the one with the boobs,” you point out and he lets out a cheerful little laugh.
“You sure? I don’t mind-”
You use his stronger body for leverage to pull yourself up and then push him back down to the mattress. “Mirio, get some sleep. I can handle our kid for a whole twenty minutes, I swear.” He looks up at you for a second before his warm smile spreads across his face and he gives you an encouraging thumbs up. Picking your son up is the most exercise you’ve had in weeks, and you appreciate the familiar stretch from using your muscles as you carry the fussy baby out of the bedroom. Once settled on the couch, Tomo’s immediately placated when he latches onto your breast for a well-earned snack.
“Hey little guy, how’s it going?” He blinks up at you lazily, soothed by the sound of your voice and heartbeat beside him. “I don’t know what’s gotten into Daddy right now, I promise he’s not usually this weird.” You laugh to yourself, remembering the first time you’d sparred with him in class and accidentally punched him in the crotch when he’d phased out of his clothes. “Alright, not this kind of weird.” You look down at those eyes you’ve been in love with since high school and sigh happily. Those Togata genes are just too strong, it would have been way more of a surprise if your child didn’t look so much like Mirio. You hum quietly as he drinks his fill, and it’s not long before he falls asleep cradled in your arms. Satisfied with a job well done, you sneak into the bedroom and carefully deposit him back into his crib with no complaints.
Mirio’s breathing evenly, but you can tell he’s still awake. “You did great, babe. He loves you so much.”
You cuddle against his chest and stare at him for a long moment. “Hey, Mirio? Are you, y’know, okay?”
His smile falters for a second before he brushes it off. “Yeah. Better than okay, I’m great!” You don’t respond and he glances away. “Why? What’s up?”
“You’ve just been, I don’t know, super restless since we came home. And it’s not like I don’t appreciate everything you’re doing, you’re amazing, but it feels like you don’t want me to help at all.”
He doesn’t respond at first, and you wonder if he’s going to avoid the question entirely. Finally he runs a hand through his messy hair and gives a frustrated sigh. “It’s not that. I guess I just feel kinda guilty.” You’re confused, and he makes himself continue. “I know I sort of torpedoed your spot in the rankings and I’ve always felt bad about that,” he admits, and that point is hard to argue. Your debut wasn’t as spectacular as his, but cracking into the top 150 in your first hero ranking was still an impressive achievement. Taking a long hiatus so soon into your career kicked you off the board entirely, to the point where a lot of fans don’t even realize Lemillion’s wife is also a hero on temporary leave. You’ve never held it against him, though; it took both of you to get you pregnant. Mirio clears his throat. “Then in the hospital, when they said you had to get a c-section, it was really awful to just stand there and do nothing while you had to go through all that.”
“There was nothing for you to do,” you reason with him and ruffle his hair. He grabs your hand and kisses your fingers.
“I know, but that doesn’t make it any better. I hate feeling so useless.”
It’s surprising to hear him admit that. “You’re not useless.”
“Maybe not, but it still feels that way.” His fingers wrap around yours and squeeze tightly. “You’ve done so much already, so I figured it’s only fair if I do everything for awhile while you just relax.”
You sigh and free yourself to cup his face in your hands. “Mirio, we’re in this together. You couldn’t have the baby, but you were right there the entire time taking care of me. I was only able to handle all of it because I had you with me, and you know that’s not nothing.” You gaze over at Tomo, still fast asleep where you left him, and turn Mirio’s head to look at him. “You were the first person he ever met, and the first thing he got to see was how much you love him. There’s no way that could ever be useless.”
Before you can say anything else, you’re smothered in a sudden bear hug that knocks all the air from your lungs. “You’re right,” he sniffles with an enormous grin. “You know I’ve always been jealous of how much smarter you are.” With this weight lifted from his shoulders, it doesn’t take long for Mirio to drift off into a peaceful sleep. Your only regret is that you’re wrapped too tightly in his arms to escape to the bathroom for the next several hours.

Hi … I hate Tumblr and it would not let me ask as an anon, but I’m also Stat19ngrey on AO3. You may not know me but I know your work. I’m taking my shot … lyric-prompt suggestions for Maya and Carina … if you’re still up for them. The first … from the song Flight Risk by Tommy Lafroy: I wanted to stay, I tried, But you’ll never leave me, You’ll never leave me, You’ll never leave me, You’ll never leave me, If I’m already gone. And from All We Know by The Chainsmokers: We've passed the end, so we chase forever, ‘Cause this is all we know.
Hey! To be honest, your prompt has a better chance of being filled if I know who you are. 😊 This one fills your second prompt, All We Know by The Chainsmokers. Ugh, those lyrics took me back to where they were before the hiatus so I wrote a little extra moment for episode 6x05. Going back to that time made me grateful of the small steps they made in last week's episode - long may that continue! Anyway, I hope you enjoy this one.
A link to the song
>>>>>>>>>>
Carina watches Maya’s chest rise and fall, feeling her warm breath on her cheek as a soft sigh escapes from her lips every time she exhales. Even in her sleep, Maya looks agitated. A wisp of hair falls down her forehead, marked by the angry vein that is a permanent feature in her face these days, and Carina fights the urge to brush it away. She doesn’t want to disturb her. It is better that she sleeps, even if it is unsettled.
Her surprise had done what she desperately needed it to do. It had given them this one night where they reconnected, physically at least; a reminder of who and what they are together. She can still feel the way Maya’s hands roamed her body, caressing her skin; she can still taste her lips, still sense the urgency of her movements. Carina craves more from her wife, wants to wake her with a kiss and pull her into her arms, to become so entangled that she doesn’t know where she ends and Maya starts.
And then she will hold on with all her power.
Because with each day that passes, she feels Maya drift further away from her and Carina is scared that if she lets go, Maya will drift away so far that she will never come back.
Our love story is beautiful and I don’t want to lose it. I don’t want to lose us.
Carina feels a tug on her heart, her fears creeping back in. Is it too late? She is not naïve enough to believe that this one night will fix all of their problems. The walls are still there, Carina knows that; but she needs this evening to have done something good. To have done something to bring Maya back from the spiral that she seems so hellbent on descending into with every dumb decision she makes – the latest of which has landed her with a sprained ankle.
Carina heard from Ben what had happened at the Horror Hayground and of course she has noticed the slight limp with which Maya now walks. She suspects that Beckett might be behind Maya finally coming home, but doesn’t dare ask. She is tired of the arguments and push back every time she tries to help her. She is tired of feeling like she is the only one who cares, of feeling like she is the only one fighting for Maya and their marriage.
She needs Maya to fight too. They promised to love and choose each other forever on their wedding day and her stubborn streak means Carina isn’t willing to walk away.
At least, not yet.
Not when nights like this are still possible.
Unable to stop herself, Carina reaches out and runs her fingertips across Maya’s cheek, noticing how dry her skin has become. Despite the gentleness of her touch, Maya twitches, her forehead crinkling and her hand swatting Carina away, rejecting her in her subconscious. It stings and Carina recoils, blinking back the tears.
She doesn’t want to walk away. She doesn’t want to lose this. But Carina feels like she might.

It’s Wednesday. One of my neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks is called itburnswhenIP.
“Life Saga” is another serious song, so apologies for any somber cringiness that follows.
Songs 38 - 49 are lyrically driven (with the exception of song 47), and most of them are dark. The struggles that I was experiencing at the time don’t make me unique. You have probably experienced equally, if not more difficult times in your life.
“Life Saga” is taking a step back and describing an ideal life from birth to death. A life focused on family over everything else. Specifically the family that you create, not born into. I don’t necessarily agree with the lyrics today, as I’m not particularly interested in having children at the moment, but the lyrics depict how I felt at the time.
The genre is basically rock, but swap out the guitars with 8-bit / chiptune synthesizers. 8-bit video game synthesizers are popular among my generation (late millennials), because many of us grew up playing NES, SNES and Game Boy (the name GoBoy is even inspired by Game Boy).
The drums are inspired by Travis Barker.
Once again, there’s some hesitancy in my voice (explained in post 38). I wouldn’t fully regain my confidence following the seven-year hiatus until midway through GoBoy 5. The lack of confidence was a result of the personal disaster that was “Throwback (Song 23),” which ultimately lead to the hiatus. You can read about that in posts 23 and 36.
This paragraph sounds somewhat sarcastic, but I promise it’s 100% heartfelt. While the lyrics were fueled by anger, and possibly undiagnosed depression, the creative release brought about a feeling of euphoria that I hadn’t experienced before. I sobbed during the creation of this song, not out of sadness, but out of the joy of rediscovering creativity after a seven-year hiatus (more about the hiatus in posts 23 and 36). The combination of dark lyrics and euphoric feelings was strange. This emotional release continued throughout songs 40-49. Long, ugly sobs for each of them (excerpt from post 40).
In April, 2021, almost all of GoBoy 3, 4 and 5‘s songs were restructured to be under 2m 30s, including this song. In an attempt to increase replay value in this streaming era, most of GoBoy’s songs are now purposely around 2m 20s (excerpts from post 38).
A bass boost was added to songs 37-99 in Nov, 2021, while I was stuck at home with covid. As a result, this song feels more powerful. The bass boost isn’t a simple plugin nonchalantly added to each song. It’s a process that took about 3.5 hours per song, or one whole month to complete all songs. Admittedly, I pushed the bass boost a little too far for some of them. The bass in some songs sounds like a freaking earthquake (unnecessarily pronounced low frequencies 20 - 50 Hz). Might dial that back someday. The bass boost was also applied to every song on GoBoy 6 and beyond (excerpt from post 37).

ANGEL REYES x READER / Spring prompts !
Tumblr media
A/N: I won’t lie. I missed writing for this man and ofc the premiere amplified that so here goes nothing! + ofc written with black or brown reader in mind. Something light hearted with these possible spring prompts I’m putting out. No promises, I’m kinda rusty since I went on a hiatus that I’m still on…somewhat? Anyways! Hope you like this!
using this list here if you’d like to do your own.
Numbers — #27. Allergies + #24. “I didn’t mean it like that”
•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•^•*•
The sun was still peeping through the normally dim home you shared with your sometimes husband, Angel Reyes. It was your day off so you catered to yourself by staying in bed until 11, ordered some food for lunch, and did some light cleaning until your cut off time at 2pm.
Now you sat on your new royal blue couch that you purchased two weeks ago (you stopped asking Angel for his input since he stopped taking it seriously, the only thing he took serious was the price. You needed quality items in the house, and you’d be damned if you continued sitting on the couch he shared intimate moments with others on) in complete comfort with your giggle juice shaking your head at “the ultimatum” on Netflix.
“Colby sure had us in the first half but this is exactly why you can’t trust these shit dudes.” You mumbled as you took a sip from your glass.
Angel suddenly felt the need to plop down, almost sitting on your head until you screamed in protest as he sat on your wavy locks, while you carefully held the glass up in the air.
“Didn’t see you there, thought you’d be sinking into the bed still like this morning. Now I guess you found a new spot.” Angel joked, as he lifted his ass for you to fling yourself upwards with a side eye.
Rolling your eyes, you took another sip of your giggle juice you replied, “don’t play with me.”
Angel laughed as he leaned towards you now, reaching for your glass in which you placed a hand right in the man’s face. The man laughed into your hand before reaching for your wrist to yank it away from his face.
Although your attention was now back on the screen in front of you two, Angel sat up a bit on his elbows to get a good look at you. You looked gorgeous in your loungewear: a teddy sweater, waffle shorts, and tall socks that most definitely looked like his. The tower fan that was off to the side, blew your ringlets onto your face but the open skin that faced him, made him quirk up a brow.
“The fuck is that on your face?” Angel blurted out, eyes in slits.
You shushed Angel as you watched a sudden proposal take place at the dining table on screen, your head tilted to the side in confusion.
That’s when Angel began poking. First at the side of your neck, which now began to itch and then your cheek which hurt.
“Angel! Stop!”
“What is that?!” Angel yelled back.
Huffing you snatched the remote and paused the tv to glare at Angel. “You just got home and you’re annoying me already.”
“I’m annoying?” Angel placed his hand flat against his chest, brows raised, “There’s scales or some shit on your face.”
Glaring at the man you said, “and then you wonder why I act like I don’t know you in public sometimes because you say things like this. When I’m breaking out, you’re not supposed to make me feel like shit about it.”
“That ain’t no break out,” Angel shook his head as he leaned towards you again looking at it, “whatever it is, it ain’t right. What did you do while I was gone?”
“What are implying?” You fired off.
Angel picked up your phone, unlocked it with your face and opened up your camera; holding it up to your face for you to see for yourself.
Shifting your head around you immediately noticed what Angel was talking about. The red blotch on your neck appeared as if it was spreading upwards to your jaw, another was a cluster against your upper right cheek, and another welt was forming on your eyelid.
“See, now if I ain’t say nothing you’d probably be walking around here looking like silkie from fucken teen titans.” Angel placed your phone down, eyeing your reaction.
Huffing you shoved the wine glass into Angel’s chest, who gasped at the jab as you got to your feet.
“Where you going?”
You didn’t bother answering Angel as you left the room, leaving the man to sniff at the almost empty glass before his eyes shifted in thought, then he also got to his feet racing after you.
He found you in the bathroom, inspecting yourself with a pout now forming on your lips. He gave you some space as you opened up the drawers, flinging around some creams.
“What’re doing?”
“Um, I’m trying to fix this! What do you think? You just called me ugly—
“I didn’t say all that and you know that’s far from true.”
Glaring through the mirror, you managed to pull your hair up into a clip and out of the way so that the hives could get some air. You fanned your neck area as it began to itch while you answered, “Silkie from teen titans?”
“You said the thing was cute and that if it was real you wanted one the other damn day!” Angel argued.
“I was drunk.”
“Well…I didn’t mean it like that.” He said, referring to what you felt was a insult.
Silence filled the air until you began scrubbing and washing your hands before you went to rub the cream on your face. Angel felt a smirk appearing on his lips at the image but actually decided against making a crude joke in that moment.
“Maybe it’s this new spring thing you’ve been drinking? What’s in it?” Angel suggested, sniffing it again.
Flinging your hand around in dismissal you disagreed, “I honestly thought it was the dusting I did earlier, I went into a whole sneezing fit then i did my skincare and took a shower and I was fine.”
“And you didn’t notice your body feeling funny later with this?”
“I was too involved in my show, which you ruined my time doing.” You turned to place your back against the counter and crossed your arms, “I thought a little sprite and a little lemon wouldn’t hurt. I tweaked the recipe too!”
Angel pinched the bridge of his nose.
“So you’re telling me you’re allergic to sprite and lemons now?”
You raised your hands in surrender, “we don’t know that for sure! Sprite makes my nose congested and my stomach feels kinda funny afterwards but when has it ever been healthy for anyone? Lemons? Probably. It started with Hank’s mom’s cream cheese lemon bars at his birthday party last year.”
Angel felt his own eye twitch, “Jesus fucking Christ, y/n!”
“Don’t you yell at me, you asshole!”
“I’m yelling because what would of happened if I came in here with you wheezing on the couch instead of talking to the damn air?!”
You blinked as you held your arms out, “well I would hope your husband duties would kick in and you would help me.”
“Help you? Fine, I’m helping you right now! No more sprite and no more fucking lemons you hear me? All that shit is going in the garbage.” He pointed behind him in the direction of the kitchen.
You knew he was right but it’s not like you wanted to hear that shit.
“Whatever.”
“No, it’s not whatever! Sorry for caring about your well-being but you’re really starting to piss me off with your attitude. And for the love of god, I’m getting you some Benadryl before you become unrecognizable!” Angel’s voice boomed off the walls.
The both of you had a stare off with you fanning him away, once again, “well go about your business then, don’t just stand there staring at me.”
He stepped to you then, “whether you like it or not, you are my business. Been that way since you said, ‘I do.’ You can lead the way back to the living room, while I do my job of taking care of your stubborn ass.”
“Stubborn?!” You repeated, taking your time as you led the way out of the bathroom, arms still folded, “I know you ain’t talkin’.”
Angel nudged you forward with his knuckles by the small of your back, which made you swipe a elbow back at him but he side stepped your attack with a chuckle.
Back to the small living room, you took your spot on the couch and unpaused the show while Angel began making obnoxious noise (as usual) in the kitchen. The man made it his mission to search the cabinet, finding the allergy meds and snatched up a bottle of water to bring to you.
“Here.” He offered the items to you, watching you intently as you briefly took your eyes off the screen to actually do what you were told.
Sticking out your tongue mockingly, Angel scowled at you then leaned forward to grip the top of your head to place a kiss there. He got a nice light whiff of vanilla and Shea as he did so before he backed off. He left you alone to finally place the wine glass into the sink and searched the fridge for the mini cans of sprite and bags of lemons, he wasted no time throwing it all in the garbage. He checked two more times for anything else that could be related to your allergic reaction but felt satisfied to find nothing else.
Plopping down beside you with a beer bottle in his hand, he glanced at the tv trying to understand the concept of the show you were binge watching until you reached for his hand.
“Aw, not you trying to hold my hand and shit.” Angel cooed at you while you rolled your eyes, squeezing it tighter.
“I love you, idiot.”
Angel beamed, “I love you too. Might even fuck around and kiss you but I don’t want what you got, you know?” He joked.
That made you snatch your hand from Angel’s while he let out a laugh as you made a praying motion to the ceiling and screamed internally with your lips closed together.
“What you getting mad for? You just said you loved me a few seconds ago.” He rested on your lap.
You tugged on his beard, taking the opportunity to peck his lips before he could protest, “maybe I need to give your ass a ultimatum.”
“For what? Allergies? That ain’t my fault.” Angel lifted his shoulders.
Suddenly you pinched his lips closed, catching the man off guard and let out a sigh of contentment as you focused on the screen and not the itch on your skin.

Prompt: Chris Evans story where your boyfriend is a cheating douche-bag. He cheats on you time and time again and you get into a bit of a depression. You confide in your best friend, Chris Evans. His consoling leads to sex, the sex soon turns into a regular thing and you get happy again. Your boyfriend sees your change and promises that he will never cheat again and that he will treat you better. You’re happy but sad at the same time because now you have to break things off with Chris. But Chris won’t have it; he says that you should stay with him and not your boyfriend. You’re not sure of which decision to make, so Chris lists off reasons why you would be better off with him.
Chris Evans x black!reader
A/N: my first Chris Evans story!! Let me know what you guys think of it.
A/N 2: I started this story a few years ago and it took me a long time to finish cause I was on a very long writing hiatus and didn't finish this until earlier this year, so some of the story goes off of what the summary says and I decided to turn this into 2 parts (could be more, depending on how long the 2nd part is). So no smut in this part, just angst and dumb jokes. This also originally wasn't going to be a black reader story, but seeing how my ACTUAL 1st Chris Evans story went pretty well (the Game On story) I decided to make it another one cause I love it.
C/W: angst, swearing, my dumb jokes, 3rd person story (it hurt my brain to write it this way, but I wanted to try something different)
Tumblr media
“He did it again, Chris! Michael cheated on me with some big titted chick,” Y/N said as she sobbed into her best friend’s shoulder.
Chris rubbed his friend’s back, trying to calm her down. He knew how to handle situations like these since Y/N went through so many of them with her boyfriend. Chris thought her relationship with Michael was like a broken record: always repeating itself. It was good at first with the couple being so obviously in love, but that changed six months later when Michael decided that Y/N wasn’t enough and started to cheat on her with multiple women. Y/N had been given advice by Chris countless times about guys like Michael and she listened to him, she really did. But she always ended up forgiving her unfaithful boyfriend and enjoyed the makeup sex that Michael would give her after.
“He and that big titted chick can both go to hell for all I care,” Chris replied. Then he lifted his friend’s head from his shoulder and made her look directly in his eyes. “Hey hon,” he said using his ‘friendly’ nickname for Y/N. “I think it’s about time you dropped that lame ass zero and got yourself a hero.”
“Okay, Captain America,” Y/N chuckled while wiping her face.
Chris laughed too, but deep down he was really hoping that Y/N would actually consider dating him. They met seven years ago and became fast friends. But the bearded actor didn’t count on falling for Y/N a few years later when he was doing an interview for one of his new movies and Y/N was there to help support him and make sure his anxiety didn’t get the best of him. While in the middle of the interview, Chris started to feel a little fidgety, so he tugged on his ear; a sign that told Y/N that he needed her help. She was standing right behind the cameraman, so Y/N could see everything that Chris was doing. She saw the signal and started to make some weird faces for her best friend.
Y/N made Chris and the interviewer crack up that day, especially when she stood right behind the cameraman and started to bulge her eyes out at him, making him laugh as well. At that moment, Chris realized that he had found that special someone. That special someone that he wants to spend the rest of his life with and just keep forever, never let go.
Y/N was sweet, considerate and loved Disney movies and dogs as much as he did. So he felt that she was just perfect for him. He even started to mentally kick his ass for taking so long to realize this.
The interviewer asked Chris one last question before he had to leave.
“So, Chris, is there a special lady in your life? Ya know, besides your mother and sisters,” she asked.
Chris chuckled and looked right in Y/N’s direction with a bright smile on his face. “Well, I don’t have anyone yet,” the blonde answered, his eyes never leaving Y/N’s, “but I’m looking for her.”
“Chris? Chris, did you hear me,” Y/N asked suddenly, stopping Chris from remembering the day he fell for her.
Evans shook his head no. “Sorry, I zoned out for a few seconds.”
Y/N rolled her eyes. “I said I would love to find a new boyfriend, but I’m still in love with Michael.” Chris rolled his eyes this time. “Don’t do that, man. I can’t help that these are my feelings for him.”
“But what are your feelings for him right now! Aren’t you sad? Pissed? Or feeling like you just wanna punch that douche-bag in the face so hard that his face caves in a little bit?”
Chris’s friend nodded her head yes and started to sob again. He felt bad for making Y/N cry; he would never want to make her tears fall from her eyes unless they were tears of joy. He grabbed Y/N and embraced her for a few minutes until she was calm again. Once was she was, Chris pulled away from Y/N enough to look her in her eyes.
“Hey, promise me that you’ll forget about that douche for at least two weeks and just try to find someone better. Okay?” Chris begged with sincerity in his eyes.
“Okay,” I promise,” Y/N complied.
Chris kissed Y/N’s head and, after saying goodbye, left his friend’s house for the night.
           * * *
Chris returned to Y/N’s house a few weeks later. He rung the doorbell and heard a faint ‘it’s open’. Evans opened and closed the door behind him and blushed at the sight in front of him: there stood Y/N, wearing only a pair of boy shorts and an over sized t-shirt, no makeup. That’s when Chris thought, no knew, that Y/N was the most beautiful woman out there.
"Hi Chris," Y/N greeted her best friend with a warm hug and a kiss on his cheek. Evans couldn't help the blush that crept onto his face. He also couldn't help but to imagine if he and Y/N were together and he'd come home from being on set all day long, her greeting him the same way she was now except that she'd try to pull back a little to ask him about his day. But Chris would hold his lover in a tight embrace, kiss her so lovingly, so passionately, and ask about her day instead.
Yeah, Christopher Robert [Jamal] Evans would love that.
"Hey, Y/N," Chris replied as he breathed in the embrace. "How've you been lately?"
"A little bit better; not fully okay, but I'm getting there I think," Y/N answered.
Chris shook his head in disbelief. He knew when his best friend was lying to him. "Y/N," he whispered, "I can see in your eyes that you're hurting more than letting on. You sure you're doing fine?"
Y/N's smile was quickly replaced with a small frown. "I'm doin' fine, Evans," she answered, mocking Chris's Boston accent. "And, before you ask, yes I have went on a few dates with other guys; three to be exact. First guy wouldn't shut up about his ex-wife; like I was supposed to be his therapist or something. Second guy -this gorgeous dreadhead- we connected and shit, but he too wouldn't stop talking about his ex and his table manners were terrible." You rolled your eyes before finishing your list. "Last but not least, I went on date with Mr. I-Got-Tons-of-Money-Baby. We didn't connect at all and I'm sure it was cause of his cocky attitude and the way he talked down to people -it was disgusting! " The dateless woman flounced into her big living room and plopped down onto her L-shaped sofa. "Trying to find a new man is pointless, Chris. Either I start dating women cause why the fuck not!? Or I just give up on love all together."
Chris chuckled but then nervously cleared his throat after he came up with a great -but what he also thought was a heart attack inducing- idea. "Y/N," he stammered.
"Yeah, man?"
"If the whole thing with you dating females doesn't work out, but you still want to try to find love, then I know exactly who you should date next."
Y/N gave Chris a questionable look. He didn't say anything back, just raised an eyebrow and grinned mischievously. It took Y/N a few seconds to understand what Chris was talking about. But once she did, her mouth went into an O shape, showing her shock and surprise.
"Are you serious, Evans," Y/N exclaimed; eyes now wide as golf balls. "You wanna date me!?!"
The actor chuckled. He didn't think that his friend would be so shocked by his words. "I've been wanting to date you basically almost ever since we first met, Y/N. I just- -I just never knew what to say to you about it, or if you felt the same way or not and if you didn't then I didn't want to ruin our friendship, or if you did feel the dame way but then something bad happens to us down the road and then that messes with up our friendship and then there's the thing with paparazzi..." Chris was rambling on and on but Y/N was listening to everything he was saying. Hanging onto every word that was coming out of her best friend's mouth.
Y/N had never known that Chris had felt this way about her. It wasn't that she was completely oblivious (well, maybe a little), but she also never saw any signs of her friend being in love with her. Wait. Was Chris in love with Y/N? As far as she knew -or as far as she thought from what she was told so far- this was just a crush. A crush confession that apparently was a long time coming. She wondered how she felt for Chris; did she have the same feelings for him like he did for her? When they first met, all Y/N cared about was how Chris acted as a person, not as Captain America or as an actor in general. But as Chris Evans, an everyday man. Y/N knew, after that one day of meeting Evans, that she wanted to be best friends with the man, nothing more and nothing less. But now, with Chris' confession and continuous ramblings, Y/N was having different and a little bit confusing thoughts.
Sure Chris Evans is an very attractive man, physically speaking. But Y/N doesn't care about looks -much- when it comes to dating or anything for that matter. She thinks what makes people attractive is their personality more than anything, and she knows Chris has the best personality she's ever seen from a person. But she wasn't sure if she was ready to date him or anyone else for that matter. Although, if Y/N was going to date more, then Chris would probably be her number one pick.
"So, what do you say, Y/N," Chris asked, hopeful.
______________________________________________________________
And that's the end of part 1, everyone. Part 2 will be posted....probably next week or so. It is currently one of my WIPs so I'm definitely working on it.
But what do ya'll think will happen next? What will Y/N's answer to Chris be? Will she say yes, or will she say no? Who knows??? Except for me; I know. Also, you're Y/N; Y/N is you, so you better hope that you say something positive back :P Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed this! Thanks for reading!!

Announcement
Hello everyone,
I’ve greatly neglected this place. Cobwebs have grown, amongst other molds, and I hate it. This blog used to be a place of refugee for me. I come back every now and then to dust off the countertops, but I never stay long enough to leave my footprints in the dust. The veils over the chairs always go back up.
To be upfront, and non-simileic like I usually am, I don’t know if I want to write or continue to write.
Keeping curt, my personal life has been busy and chaotic. I’ve had many things in the past year--few years really in particular, that have been continuously taxing on my being, and slowly I’ve begun to pull away from writing. I’m very particular about how I write, and what I choose to represent out, and the quality that I’ve recently produced was not up to par, but I wrote. I wrote because I wanted to, for myself, but I couldn’t keep doing it. I just--didn’t enjoy it.
Personally, what once was a fun hobby now became a chore. I couldn’t-can’t follow through a story when I have no motivation. I’m not ashamed, I just needed and need time for myself to figure out--me. Death, my mother’s cancer now in recovery, a failed job, failed relationship, and a thousand more times forced to begin and crusades have visited me and I’ve had no choice to house them. I’m not saying I have hatred, or resentment, or fear, its more of--life has happened. Life is happening. But I’m tired. Mentally and physically.
I just don’t have the space in my head to finish off stories that I dearly love at the moment. Not when all I want to do is rest. I wish to tell you how the Opal Eye of the White Fang ends, how Jimin in Show Me Your Teeth got his scars, and that epilogue to Fireflies...but I just...can’t right now.
This is something I should have done a while ago, I’m letting you know I’m going on a hiatus--indefinitely. You can still send me messages, ask, or whatever else. I have not abandoned this blog, I’m still here, I just don’t know when I’ll be back to writing.
So, even though I may not always be here actively posting or whatnot, but this place can still be your home. Please feel free to put your feet up. Come and stay awhile to read and forget the outside world. This is still your place, and you’ll always be welcomed. And I want to assure you, I’m fine. I’m really okay. That’s a promise.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for taking the time to read any of my work. I hope you’re doing well and know I miss you all.
Promise me you’ll take care of yourself? Again, always here if you want to just drop a message.
Always,
Danielle

ethan winters with a very cuddly s/o
(a/n): so this is very short. i just wrote a little drabble, based on this, to get my creative juices flowing after my hiatus for a few days.
word count: 616
pairing: ethan winters x f!reader
drabble under the cut.
Tumblr media
Ethan had just finished a long day at training, walking inside and putting his stuff down by the front door. He genuinely hated that he had to do this, but he wanted to protect you and your future child from any harm after the incident with his ex-wife. He sighed, running a hand through his hair, kicking his shoes off and going towards the living room.
There you were, sitting on the couch reading a book. You were so immersed that you barely even thought to get up from where you were sitting when you heard the door open. As soon as you saw Ethan’s figure in the corner of your eye however, you immediately placed the book down and stood up.
Ethan looked down at you, humming softly before you moved to wrap your arms around his torso. You held him close to you as he played with your hair, secretly loving how cuddly you were when he got home. It helped remind him what he was doing everything for.
He pulled away, which caused you to pout when you turned to look up at him. Ethan chuckled, placing a hand on your slowly growing baby bump.
“How are you two doing?” He asked, looking down at his hand. You looked down with him.
“Pretty good, they’ve been a bit squirmy today… still can’t feel it on the outside though,” you giggled, his fingers immediately finding your side as he began to tickle you. You started to laugh loudly, trying to push his hands away. He continued to attack your side, not stopping until you let out breathless “please”’s and “stoooooop”’s.
Ethan smiled down at you, giving a nod. Your face was red, and breathing was still heavy. You moved to go sit back down on the couch, motioning for the man to lay his head down in your lap. He obliged, laying down and looking up at you. Your soft hands began to delicately play with his blonde hair, leaning down time to time and peppering kisses against his skin.
“Miss me that much?”
You rolled your eyes.
“I always miss you, silly,” you replied, moving to lay down beside him now on the couch. He turned to his side to let you lay beside him, his arm underneath your neck as you turned to face him.
You closed your eyes, pressing your forehead against his chest as you relished in this moment. You had a gut feeling that something would happen, but you didn’t want to tell Ethan about your paranoia. After he had gotten back from Louisiana, everything had seemed so… odd.
You held him closed, breathing in his scent as his hands rubbed against your pack. He placed soft kisses against your forehead. He could feel you slightly tense up under his touch, which caused his own panic to rise in him.
“You okay?” Ethan asked, pulling away slightly and looking down at you. Your eyes teared up.
“Just let me hold you…”
“What’s wrong, Y/n?” He asked calmly, playing with your hair as you tried not to break down even more. You held him close, digging your head into his chest. You hiccupped slightly every few seconds, trying to think on how to tell him your thoughts without concerning him even more.
“I feel like something is going to happen to you… or the baby… I’m scared…” you whispered against his shirt. He sighed, twisting some of your hair against his fingers. He hummed, trying to soothe you more and more. You listened to his erratic heartbeat, a soft, shaky sigh leaving your lips.
“Nothing will happen to me, baby, I promise…”
“Promise?”
“Of course… I promise.”

Warmth in the freezing snow
Genshin Impact Adeptus!reader au
warnings: light angst?, mentions of drugging and syringes, probably messy, crappy quality
words: ~2.8k
Notes: series is resuming after the hiatus. I had a hard time writing this chapter (because I suck at writing) so I really hope this chapter didn't turn out to be too messy and confusing. ao3 series link

Stepping out the ship, you’re immediately greeted by the harsh and nostalgic icy cold breeze. Pure white snowflakes that dance around your vision and the pile of soft snow beneath your feet tells you that you’re back in Snezhnaya.
You asked a subordinate to help you deliver the lantern you had bought for Teucer and obediently followed another Fatui member, who guided you to the chamber where the Tsarista is patiently waiting for your arrival.
“Your highness, I have returned.” You kneeled down on one knee, head lowering to pay your respects. The Tsarista’s ice cold gaze pierces you, making you anxious on why she summoned you.
“My loyal subject.” a voice so calm and quiet, barely to be heard, yet crystal clear and reverberates around the shallow and empty hall, sending a chill down your spine. You look up upon her call, acknowledging that she remains ever so strikingly breath-taking, as resplendent as the most exquisite flower, as elegant as Snezhnaya’s never-melting snow.
“Dottore has found a way to further enhance the capabilities of Fatui, and your aid is needed to achieve it.” She walks closer to you with each step, stopping just before your kneeled figure.
“To achieve it, your aid is necessary. I trust that you will provide all the help Dottore needs dutifully, yes?” A simple question, but her tone indicates that she does not accept rejection as an answer.
“Yes, of course.” The Tsarista seems delighted at your answer, resting her chilly hand on your cheeks and lightly caressing it with her thumb. The subtle intimate gesture however, was nothing resembling that of affection. The Tsarista’s sharp gaze remains fixated on you, yet it doesn’t feel like she’s properly looking at you at all. Her gaze has always been like that, as if she’s looking for something deeper in your soul, but not your existence.
“Dottore, come in. The final mission of our primeval harbinger shall now be performed.” The coldness on your cheeks is replaced by the sudden gushes of wind, the words leaving the Tsarista’s mouth leaving you off guard as you abruptly shot your head up.
“...Your highness? What does that-” Cut off by a harsh slam of the door, you turn to the entrance only to reveal a masked man with curly blue locks- Dottore. The condescending smirk spreading on his face as he meets your wary eyes sets off alarms in your head, screaming that this man is up to no good.
Your hand immediately reaches towards the hilt of your sword resting on your hips, ready to draw it out if he makes any suspicious movements. Furrowing your eyebrows and eyeing Dottore’s every move, unsure of what he would do.
“Relax, relax. This is all under the Tsarista’s orders, doesn’t do too much harm...I guess?” Dottore, now casually twirling a syringe filled with a dangerous-looking fluid, puts his hands up in the air in a placating manner, but his halfhearted response only makes you glare at him cautiously.
“I will have to question you on what you’re about to do, Dottore.” It’s all under the Tsarista’s orders, and you thought it would just be something about training new Fatui recruits, but Dottore’s behaviour insinuates that there is much more than that, and seems like the syringe is to be used on you.
“Oh this? Haha! I’m not quite sure, maybe knock you out for a bit? Y’know, draw out your adeptal powers to the maximum potential, I weaponise it, and voila! Fatui gets a new upgrade! Wonderful plan right?”
Dottore sure made it sound like no big deal, but you know that’s not all the catch. Because if it’s about your adeptal powers, then surely, the Tsarista’s intention is to-
“You’d better not do any stupid movements with your sword, yeah? It would be bad if you were to go against her highness’ orders, after all, you are her most loyal subordinate. Unless… you plan to commit treachery?” Dottore leered as your grip on the sword tightens, conflicted on what to do.
Reluctantly, you peered over to the Tsarista, who has not said a word at the impasse and tense situation between you and Dottore, silently watching everything unfold before her. The Tsarista’s glacial smile never fades as she meets your gaze, not giving you a definite response, but perhaps acknowledging Dottore’s words.
“That’s… not all there is to this, is it?” Despite your loyalty to the Tsarista, this question must be raised for your own sake. Adeptal energy has always been a rather sensitive subject to both you and the Tsarista, with you knowing that she has always wanted to utilise your mysterious powers to help her achieve her goals.
“Quite the sharp one huh? Well I suppose there’s no use beating around the bush, I’ll do you the favour in telling you this- Your adeptal energy is to be drained completely for us to use, ahahaha!” A fit of manical laughter jolted through him, his atrocious appearance matching his abhorrent personality.
“And that would leave me...vulnerable and powerless?” The appalling smirk that makes you want to throw up, the messed up plan that makes you want to run away from the Tsarista’s chambers.
“B i n g o! You neither have a vision nor delusion, so without those powers, you’re pretty much useless.” Dottore approaches you, barely stopping in front of you. Lowering his voice, he mumbled into your ears, “and you’ll be thrown away by the Tsarista, officially being useless to her. I’m sure you know by now, that all her highness cares about is that adeptal energy of yours, and not you yourself?” even at such a low volume, his mockery towards you can clearly be heard.
Of course you knew, that all the Tsarista’s interested in is your mysterious powers. It doesn’t take a detective to figure out her intentions in bringing you to her nation. Even after millennia of you serving her with your utmost loyalty, all she has taken interest in is your powers.
The cold Tsarista that requested you like an object from Morax as a trade of peace, and never paid you much attention. The Tsarista who only shows you some form of affection and addresses your name when she needs you to carry out her plans. To her, it was obvious that you are a mere chess piece, for her to attain her grand goals.
Despite knowing this, you still turned your head once more towards the Tsarista, locking gazes with her, searching for something that even you yourself wasn’t sure what you’re looking for in her eyes, but to no avail, the same empty eyes with no any sort of emotion returning your disappointment. That is how little you meant to her.
It has always been, a foolish hope of yours, to believe that one day, if you stay by her side long enough, you would become a figure that holds much more place in her heart. But that has never been the case, her icy heart never had space for you, locking you out. She has enough love for all the other harbingers, all except you.
The best course of action right now, is to draw out your blade and resist against the Tsarista. You have to defend yourself, you have to get out alive and well, because you promised Zhongli, Xiao, and Ganyu to return. You have to unsheathe your sword right this instant.
But your hands remain frozen, disobeying your commands and desperate internal cries. It should be simple, to protect yourself against those who could not care less about your existence and never acknowledging you, and flee to Liyue. So why can’t you bring yourself to do so?
Because it would mean that you’re defying the person whom your loyalty is dedicated to, denying the Tsarista’s ambitions.
The same Tsarista who ripped you apart from your family, but also the one who gave you a new identity, and a new place to call home, giving you a reason to live on by serving her.
And you who watched over her carefully throughout your lifetime; when she became obsessed with the idea of bringing down celestia, to the point where delusions are invented just for the sole purpose of resisting against the sacred land where gods are rumoured to reside.
You never found out the reason behind her obstinacy in bringing down celestia, but you stayed beside her long enough to witness her desire for power and authority to continue to expand into a bottomless abyss, and the times when she struggled.
Times when her immature plans backfired, times she felt livid and Snezhnaya would be in raging blizzards for weeks, times when she doubted her own decisions. You were always there, by her side and ready to jump into action whenever she needed you to.
Through trial and error, she learned to develop well thought-out plans after calculations and taking precautionary measures, and recruited talented individuals. The harder she falls, the higher she bounces. She was undeniably a dazzling existence to you.
The Tsarista is a blinding lone star that continues to glisten even if other stars have faded, showing its resistance towards the devouring night sky. Someone so cruel and brutal, yet ever so resplendent, that you couldn’t peel your eyes off her.
A star that defies the night sky.
And you, who only knew how to live under orders and pretty much lived a tedious life besides carrying out Fatui duties, are dull and have long succumbed to darkness.
So how could you deny her? The one who never faltered, the flames of ambition that refuses to die out no matter what? You couldn’t bring yourself to betray her even at this very moment, because you have watched over her for far too long.
“This turned out to be rather...disappointing.” Seeing you loosening your grip on the sword and putting down your defenses, Dottore scoffs.
You take a sharp inhale, making up your mind. Regretfully, your decision is to stay loyal to the Tsarista and faithfully do as she wishes up until the very end. A very foolish decision even you are aware of, and one that makes your heart scream in agony knowing that you’re once again being thrown away. Even so, this is the path you have chosen.
.
.
.
Drained, you felt. It felt as if your powers erupted all at once, and got sucked dry by a vacuum cleaner and left to die on the road. Your role as the twelfth harbinger has been dismissed, now just an identity-less wanderer. The Tsarista truly is a cruel person, you thought, to just throw you out and let you crawl away all by your own whilst surrounded by nothing but coldness and snow, knowing that you right now are incredibly weak and vulnerable. She didn’t even have someone to escort you to a shelter, simply took away your harbinger identification with the usual eerie smile.
But archons do you feel horrible, dizzy and nauseous, on the verge of passing out. Now that you’ve lost your place, where would you go? Tired, cold and nowhere to go, you lean on a nearby bark to grab a hold of yourself, trying figure out what to do from now on.
Slumping down and shutting your eyes, you are forced to face your own emotions that you have repressed in the Tsarista’s chambers. Your heart aches so much, the strong pulsations being the only thing resounding in your ears, it hurts more than how your body is right now.
What a pathetic destiny you face, to be thrown away whom you trusted and served twice in your lifetime. It hurts so much, your heart continuously screams to you, not forgiving the way you hurt it so severely. So pathetic, you are so pathetic, you thought.
Even after millennia, you still never found a place you truly belonged to, your miserable and pathetic self was not accepted anywhere. You know very well the Tsarista has always been using you, yet facing the harsh reality is not as easy as you thought.
Wouldn’t it be better if the abyss consumed you? To be embraced by darkness and vanish, not having to face pointless emotions and drama? If only your eyes never opened back from the first time you dirtied your own hands, and instead swallow by the cold and hungry arms of demise- if you only died back then, would you still have to face such circumstances?
“...Hey, comrade.” a light whisper of a familiar voice enters your ears, dragging you back from your thoughts. You looked up at the one who called for you, only to find your vision blurry and cheeks feeling wet and cold. You didn’t even realise droplets of tears had trickled down your cheeks, you are even surprised that you’re capable of crying, you hadn’t shed a tear, let alone cry out loud for so long that you had forgotten how it felt.
Childe crawls closer, slowly wrapping you into a warm hug and gently strokes you on the head like how he has treats his siblings. You feel embarrassed to be comforted by someone much younger than you and being treated like a child, but returned the hug nonetheless. Not knowing how much you needed a hug, you find his embrace to be pleasant and safe.
“There’s a ship heading to Liyue, so let’s get you home to where it’s warm and safe, yeah?” Home, Childe said, you wanted to retort, but somehow ‘home’ and ‘Liyue’ just sounded right. Is it okay if you return there? To seek asylum?
“Come on comrade, it’d be devastating if you missed the ride!” slumping your weak arms over his shoulders and a hand on your waist to support you, lifting you onto your feet to lead you to the harbour.
“I-I’m sorry for what happened, and that I...I couldn’t help you. If I had known what Dottore was scheming, I would have talked to the Tsarista and convince her not to adopt such a brutal method.” His cheery voice is replaced by one with remorse, avoiding your eyes.
“I didn’t know Dottore came up with such an outrageous method, the Tsarista didn’t inform us of her plan! I- I should’ve known Dottore was up to no good! I could’ve done something-” Getting agitated, his speech hastens and stumbles over his own words.
“Hey, hey. Calm down, you know it’s not your fault.” You cut him off, giving him a soft slap on the back. “The Tsarista had such plans a long time ago, she just...never found the right methods until today, I guess.”
Somehow, it only made Childe feel even worse, guilt and sympathy all shown on his face.
“Come on, where’s your usual jolly self? A gloomy expression doesn't suit you at all. Teucer and Tonia will be worried for their #1 toymaker of Snezhnaya.” you mustered a feeble smile, assuring him that you’re fine.
“Well, never thought I’d hear you crack a joke after all these years…” Childe’s lips curve into a relieved and playful smile. Although, you have to admit, it does makes you feel better knowing that he’s worried for you.
.
.
.
“This is the Crux, you might’ve seen their crew around Liyue before. I spoke with the captain, and it’s a huge relief that she accepted our request!” You and Childe stumbled into the guest room that is kindly lent to you, with Childe immediately helping you get on the bed and wrapping you in blankets.
“You had a not-so-pleasant eventful day, it’s best if you warm up and rest now. I can’t go back with you, but I’ve contacted Zhongli, he should be there to pick you up when you arrive.” with a soft tone, Childe picks up your hand and gently strokes your palms, taking a note of your pale complexion, you remind him of his siblings when they were sick. He turns to leave you alone, about to close the door.
“Hey, Childe?” He abruptly stops and turns back to you with a concerned look, worried if you’re still feeling unwell and perhaps he could help.
“Thank you.” but only two simple words came out of your mouth. So simple and short, but more than enough to convey the gratitude and respect you held for him.
Childe breaks into a beaming smile, “Of course! We’re friends after all, right comrade? I think I’m even your best friend!” to which you chuckled. Yeah, you suppose he isn’t wrong on that.
Just before he closes the door completely, he halts and opens his mouth, “Teucer adored your gift, he and Tonia wanted to prepare something in return… I’ll bring it to you next time, yeah? And perhaps drink tea too at Zhongli’s?”
“Yes, I shall look forward to dear Teucer and Tonia’s gift then, it’s a promise.” You feel your consciousness slip away, closing your eyes and replying to Childe with a light smile on your face.
“It’s a promise!” He enthusiastically replied, only to realise he should tone it down to let you sleep in peace. “Sweet dreams, comrade.” Just before passing out on your bed, you hear Childe’s almost inaudible reply and a click on the door shutting close.

Informalities - Éomer x reader
Tumblr media
Request:  “Eomer x reader fic where the reader is from our world and Eomer listens to the stories the reader says of our world and he thinks that it is a grand place and so when they are finally getting together, Eomer feels kind of insecure cuz he feels he'll never live up to the reader's "standards" and the reader says that they are insecure because he is a prince and she has nothing"

Warnings: mention of battles and death, about 2,200 words
A/N: Hoppy Easter lads and lasses, we are back from a many month writing hiatus. Hope y’all enjoy, I’m glad to be here :)
You genuinely had no idea how you’d ended up in Middle Earth.
It was one of those fever dream situations - one moment you were falling asleep in your own bed, and the next you were waking up at the bottom of a tree, surrounded by many bearded and concerned looking men.
Of course you’d been startled and so, so confused, but it had only taken you a few moments to recognize the characters from one of your favorite stories, and then you’d fully accepted your new reality.
By the time you first encountered the fellowship, they had already lost Gandalf at Moria and passed through the realm of Lothlorien. They were traveling in their fancy elvish boats when they’d spotted you from the river. You were extremely grateful for that - who knows what would’ve happened if the Uruk-hai tracking them had found you first.
Boromir and Gimli were quite intimidated by your presence, having been brought up in traditions that designated men for warrior roles. Aragorn and Legolas were much more accepting (female elves were just as badass as any male elf or man, and both of them knew that). The hobbits had all taken an immediate liking to you, and you’d been devastated to lose them during the Uruk ambush. Of course, this only gave you a stronger drive to track them into Rohan with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli.
It was there that you met Éomer for the first time, after his riders surrounded your small group of assumed invaders.
He was handsome, there was no denying that, and you found his decision to protect Rohan even in exile extremely brave. He’d been startled by your presence (a group including a dwarf, an elf, AND a woman must’ve been an oddity for him), and thus had talked primarily with Aragorn, but you could not shake the way his eyes locked with yours as he offered you his condolences about Merry and Pippin.
You figured you’d never see the handsome blonde again, glumly complaining to Gimli about it several times throughout Rohan.
Thus, you’d been overjoyed when he arrived at the Battle of Helm’s Deep - half because he was saving your asses from almost certain death, and half because you’d get to see his face and hear his voice again.
You followed Aragorn after the battle, searching for Gandalf in the celebrating crowd. It did not take long, with his bright white robes being quite easy to pick out.
“Gandalf!” you screamed gleefully, weaving between the people around you to get to the smiling wizard.
“It is good to see you, (Y/n),” he said as you embraced him.
“Oh, it’s even better to see you,” you said.
“I have to agree with (Y/n),” Aragorn said from behind you. You pulled back, allowing Gandalf time to greet your friend, and quickly caught sight of a familiar face.
He had been laughing with some other men when his gaze fell on you, eyes locking with yours for the second time. You smiled a bit and offered an awkward wave, face flushing as he flashed you a smile.
“Ah, (Y/n), this is Lord Éomer, current heir to the throne of Rohan,” Gandalf said, noticing the two of you staring at each other.
“We’ve met before,” he said, walking towards you
“Indeed we have,” you replied as he stopped just in front of you. “It is a pleasure to meet you, oh-future-king,” you said, bowing a bit.
You could hear Aragorn slap his forehead from behind you and grinned.
“She’s not from around here, so do forgive her manners,” Aragorn said.
“Or lack thereof,” you added, straightening yourself once more and looking at Éomer’s amused face.
“I appreciate the informality,” Éomer grinned. You spun around and pointed at Aragorn.
“See? Someone appreciates me,” you accused.
You were extremely happy to meet Éomer. It’s not that you didn’t adore Aragorn and Legolas and Gimli, but they were also the only people you’d been around for quite a while. It was exciting to make a new friend, especially one so handsome and charismatic.
The two of you spent the entire ride to Isengard delving into each other’s lives, from childhoods to secret fears to favorite foods. Obviously, the two of you had led quite different lives, and he was fascinated by the world you had come from.
“These cars you speak of, are they like horses?” he asked.
“No, they’re much faster,” you replied. “They’re more like a carriage, since they have space for several people inside.”
“But it moves without a horse?”
“Yup!”
“Who steers in then?”
You were grinning ear to ear at the look of bewilderment on his face.
“One of the people inside,” you answered. “There’s a wheel to control which direction you go and pedals on the floor to control the speed.”
“That sounds terribly complicated,” Éomer said, brows furrowing.
“It’s not too bad,” you said, “I was even pretty good at it.”
Éomer shot you an alarmed look.
“You used to steer these...these things?” he asked incredulously. You laughed and nodded. “You have to be taught how to do it,” you explained. “It’s not like they throw you into it without any preparation.”
“It still sounds extremely dangerous,” he decided.
“I did break my arm in a crash once,” you said thoughtfully. He gasped.
“You can crash them?”
Éomer had quickly become one of your favorite people, which only made the continuous battles over the fate of Middle Earth even more stressful. You were terrified he would ride into a fight and never return, and even more terrified of what that meant.
You’d searched for him for hours after the Battle for Minas Tirith, heart growing more and more heavy as you continued. Every person you asked had no idea where he was, and by the time you returned to the White City, your hands were shaking with anxiety. Finding him outside of the makeshift infirmary that had been set up was the most relieving moment of your entire life.
You had gasped the moment you caught sight of his all too familiar golden hair, letting out a desperate sob as his eyes met yours, him rushing over to you and wrapping you in his arms. Your embrace was filled with all the emotions both of you were too terrified to say aloud.
“I thought you were dead,” you murmured into his chest, eyes wet and lips trembling.
“It will take far more than a few Oliphaunts to kill me,” he whispered, pressing his lips to the top of your head.
You wanted nothing more than to tell him in that moment how much you loved him, but decided against it. You knew the fighting was not over, the last thing you needed was for him to be distracted by you during battle and find himself impaled with some pointy object. If you both lived to the end of this, you would tell him then.
But then you were too scared to do it.
Of course you had won - the ring had been destroyed, Aragorn had led the crusade against the forces of Mordor, and Gondor was preparing to crown its long lost king. Everyone was staying in Minas Tirith until the coronation, but then everyone was leaving. All your friends would be heading home, but you did not have one of those here in Middle Earth.
Aragorn had already offered you a place in Gondor’s leadership, and thus a permanent residence with him, and the hobbits were more than happy to escort you back to the Shire with them, but you knew both of these options would separate you from the one person you wanted to be with.
All you wanted was to follow Éomer back to Edoras, but you were unsure if that would be best for him. He was about to be crowned king of Rohan, and probably had many ladies of Rohan’s nobility lined up to rule with him. It was selfish for you to think you had any right to his heart, especially when his duties and responsibilities were so much more important than an outspoken, title-less woman.
So you distanced yourself from him. You avoided him whenever possible, taking the longest routes you could to dinners and meetings. You tried not to be affected by his desperate gaze, or the way he called for you as you rushed out of a room. It hurt you more than anything, but you knew it would be better for him in the long run. You succeeded with your plan until the night before Aragorn’s coronation.
You’d been walking home from dinner (a huge, pre-celebration feast that qualified as a celebration itself) through an old, twisty corridor. You opened the door to your room only to see Eomer sitting on your bed, a worried look on his face.
You jumped slightly, startled by his presence.
“What are you doing in here?” you said breathlessly. “This is totally an invasion of my privacy and absolutely uncalled for at such a late hour, you almost gave me a heart attack-”
“Forgive me,” he interrupted, standing up from the bed, eyes fixated on you. You both stood there in silence for some time, the closest you’d been to each other for the first time in days.
“I missed you,” he murmured finally. “You’ve been avoiding me.”
You looked down at your feet and nodded. You did not want to see the look of betrayal that he was undoubtedly wearing.
“Why?” he whispered. You winced at the sound of hurt in his voice.
“You would not understand Éomer, but I promise it was in your best interest,” you replied.
“You are my best friend, (Y/n), how could ignoring me benefit me?” he asked incredulously. You looked up at him, trying to ignore the tears beginning to form in your eyes.
“Éomer-”
“Please,” he cut you off desperately, slowly walking towards you. “I have missed you more than you could possibly imagine.” “That is the issue,” you whispered, closing your eyes to avoid looking at him.
“How is that an issue?” he begged.
“Because you are about to be a king,” you shouted, eyes still closed. “And you will leave after tomorrow with everyone else, back to Edoras, where new responsibilities will be awaiting you and demanding your attention.”
“How does that have anything to do with you?” he asked, voice sounding a lot closer than before. You gulped, sensing him right in front of you.
“I would be a distraction,” you replied meekly. Éomer did not reply, but instead reached to grab your hands with his own, you gasping as he pulled you into his chest.
“(Y/n), you are not a distraction, how could you-”
“I do not want you to leave me here,” you interrupted, resting your forehead against him. “I am so scared I’ll never see you again, but your life is about to be so much more important than me.”
“I do not want to leave you here,” he said, wrapping his arms around your back. “I want you to come with me. You’re my best friend, how could I abandon you?”
“That’s exactly the problem,” you whispered, “even if I were physically with you, that would not stop me from...from…”
You stopped and bit your lip, terrified of the confession about to pour out of you. Éomer moved his hand below your chin, tilting your head up to face him.
“Stop you from what?” he whispered intensely, eyes searching your face desperately. You exhaled breathily.
“I love you, Éomer,” you said softly, watching as his expression softened. “So, so much.”
He blinked once, twice, registering what you had just said, and smiled, leaning down to rest his forehead against yours.
“I love you more than anyone, (Y/n),” he murmured.
“But, surely there are women back in Rohan who are far more suitable for-”
“(Y/n),” Éomer said seriously, pulling away to look you in the eyes once more. “I have the power to be with whomever I choose.”
“But why would you choose me?” you asked meekly. Éomer chuckled, brushing a stray bit of hair out of your face and tucking it behind your ear tenderly. You leaned into his hand slightly, relishing in the way he cupped your face.
“I was more nervous that you wouldn’t choose me,” he admitted. You look at him in confusion.
“How could I not choose you?” you asked.
“You’re much more interesting than I am,” he shrugged. “You come from a world that is so much more exciting than mine, and the last thing I want is for you to settle for me.”
“Éomer, you stab people with swords and ride horses all day. And live in a castle. That is insanely cool,” you grinned, wrapping your arms around his midsection. “Of course I choose you.”
“And I choose you,” he murmured, pulling you closer to him. “Please come home with me.”
“Yes,” you whispered, nodding fervently. “Yes, please.”
Éomer grinned, tilting your face up to his once more and leaning down to kiss you. Your heart leaped, hand reaching up to grab the back of his head to intensify the kiss. He moaned softly, bending down to pick you up and twirling you around. You giggled and pressed your nose against his.
“I’m thinking we make my coronation far less formal than Aragorn’s,” Éomer said, “as much as I’ve been loving these dinners, I don’t think I could stand hosting them.”
“You know I’m fantastic at informalities,” you replied.

Ao3 Masterlist
~♡~ Recap ~♡~
Marinette kidnapped/adopted Damian after seeing him with Talia in the Miraculous Café. She gives him the choice between staying with her or a non assassin relative. He chooses to stay in hopes of stealing the miracle box, but since that didn't work he lashed out and tried to kill Marinette and her friends repeatedly. This makes Marinette doubt in herself because she feels guilty about the whole situation. After hearing Marinette cry, Damian runs away confused at the whole situation, but he didn't get far before realizing that he was actually okay with the idea of Marinette becoming his mother. Marinette finds him and they go home. Time passes, they get a dog, Damian grows closer to Marinette and Marinette legally adopts him.
This takes place some time after all of this, like a couple of months.
~♡~♡~♡~
Why am I still in Paris?
Jason asked himself this every day, and yet he could never find the answer.
Maybe it was because he really had nothing else to do. Well besides killing a Bat.
Or maybe it was because being in Paris somehow cleared some of the madness leftover from the Lazarus Pit that clouded his brain.
In either case it seemed like every time he tried to leave, he would convince himself to stay with the lie that Marinette Dupain-cheng was just as dangerous as Talia had claimed she was.
And that his "brother" really was in danger.
Which only led to him tailing after the pair like a complete creep while feeling miserable because who was he kidding? The woman who had taken Damian in was just as dangerous  as a basket of golden retriever puppies and Damian would have a way better life living with her rather than with Bruce.
And still he could not f*cking leave.
So he continued to observe from the shadows. Trying to remain invisible.
Which had worked out perfectly fine until that day it seemed, because Jason soon found himself pressed against the cold concrete after being flipped by a woman half his size.
Jason tried to look up, but he felt the heel of a shoe pressed against his head.
"Ow"
"Oh, I'm sorry did I hurt you?" Jason heard a familiar voice say. The only difference was that she was speaking in English with a slight accent rather than French.
How the h*ll did she know that he spoke English?
Jason tried to get a better look at his attacker, but she just pressed down her heel deeper making it very clear that she was not sorry at all.
Marinette leaned down to talk to him. "Look kid, I just want to know why you keep following me. Now we can talk like normal people, or I'll have to be a little… unconventional. So what do you say?"
Kid? Jason couldn't remember the last time he had been called. It was especially surreal coming from such a petite woman who couldn't be older than thirty.
"Now I'm going to let you stand up just… don't do anything stupid."
Stupid seemed to follow Jason because as soon as he felt the pressure on his head lessen, he stood up and ran. The only thing in his mind was getting away from the woman.
He wasn't able to go far though. As soon as he got to the end of the ally they were in, Jason suddenly felt all the muscles in his body grow weak. Everything around him became blurry and for the second time that day, Jason fell down and hit the gravel.
~♡~♡~♡~
Marinette hadn't meant to use a tranquilizer she made from the bee's miraculous venom on the guy. Honest.
But she needed answers, and he didn't seem in the mood to be the one providing them, so she had to do something before he got away.
Marinette did find it strange how he seemed more interested in running rather than harming her in any way. But she could think about that later. For now, she had to do something about the unconscious body on the ground.
First, Marinette tried to drag him back into the ally because she didn't want to risk anyone seeing her. It was ridiculous how difficult it was to move the guy a couple of inches. Even with all the strength she got from being ladybug, Marinette found herself incredibly tired when she finally managed to get to the end of the alley.
There was no way that Marinette could drag the guy to a safe location. Unless… she had the horse miraculous.
Marinette swiftly grabbed her phone and called Adrien while still holding down the guy in case he regained consciousness. "Hey kitty! Are you busy right now?"
"Um no?" He replied cautiously. "Unless you need me to bury a body, then I'm really busy." He would gladly lie to the police and give marinette suggestions on how to get rid of the body, but actually digging a hole sounded like too much of a hassle in Adrien's opinion.
Marinette laughed nervously. "Don't worry it's not a body." She paused "Not a dead one at least" she added under her breath.
Adrien heard her anyway "Marinette."
"I just need you to get the horse miraculous and come here." Marinette added quickly when she heard Adrien's disapproving tone.
"Do I even want to know why you need it?"
Marinette hesitated. Adrien still acted weird around Damian, and she wasn't sure that he would want to get involved with this. "Well I found the guy that was following me" she explained  "and accidentally knocked him out" Marinette stopped when she saw a portal open. "And you’re already here, was there no traffic?"
Adrien laughed as he walked out of the portal. "I was already getting the miraculous while you talked." He explained with a shrug then he looked at the unconscious guy on the floor. "Sooo… do you need help with that?"
~♡~♡~♡~
Kagami was already at the café's storage area by the time Adrien and Marinette passed through the portal.
Adrien did a double take when he saw her. "Woah, I literally just texted you."
"You said you found the stalker, and I was nearby, and I figured that you would need help interrogating him." she explained.
"With a sword?" Marinette asked, eyeing Kagami's left hand. "Where did you even get that?"
Kagami smiled. "Yes, and your son has an excellent taste."
Marinette looked at kagami, with a very confused and slightly worried expression. "Wha- when did you go sword shopping?"
Adrien replied instead. "When you asked me to babysit, your little gremlin scares me and gami wanted a sword, so I let him go with her." Then he grabbed a nearby chair and sat the guy in it, and also tied him to one of the stands that held coffee supplies using zip ties.
"You have broken my trust Agreste." Marinette said trying to sound as serious as possible but failing at it. "No, but seriously, let me know next time okay?"
"Yes ma'am"
It took a couple of minutes for the guy to regain consciousness. And as soon as he did, he thrashed around trying to break free from his restraints. Looking around him wildly until his gaze landed on Marinette.
His eyes narrowed. "You" he lunged towards her but was held back.
His attitude was completely different from their first meeting. Before he seemed conflicted and confused. But while he still seemed very confused that confusion was now mixed with rage. Which Marinette could understand, she had just knocked him out and brought him to a strange place.
But Marinette needed answers, the guy was very clearly part of the league, his aura reeked of their darkness, and she was not about to feel sympathy for anyone connected to the league of assassins.
So Marinette held no remorse when she allowed kagami to approach him with her sword after he calmed down a bit.
"Who are you?" Kagami asked threateningly, then raised the blade dangerously close to his neck. "And why have you been following Marinette?"
The guy didn't even flinch. "Name's Jason" then he turned slightly to look Marinette in the eye. "I am Damian's brother," he continued.
Marinette's eyes widened. The room fell silent for a moment.
Jason smirked at his captors' shocked faces as he gave the final blow.  "And I'm here to take him to his father."

Whatever Words Exist
StudentTeacher!Cal x Reader (Gender Neutral). Like mostly fluff.
Reader and Calum have only met briefly. But when the connection is this magnetic, you don’t press fate.
Masterlist (semi-hiatus)
_____________________
Calum readjusts the strap on his backpack, getting the bag hitched back right on his shoulder. Just up the hill he can see a gathering of people, a general human mass but still too far away for him to make out any one person in particular. He knows he’s in the right place for sure. So he continues on and a few folks wave as he approaches. Derrick, former officemate, spots Calum first and waves him closer.
“Meet Calum--old officemate of mine,” Derrick tells the group surrounding him. First years, Calum assumes and gives them a tiny smile and wave to the group.
“Yeah, because this jerk decided to apply for a full time instructor position. And then got upgraded,” Calum laughs.
“Look, gotta pay the bills how I can,” Derrick returns and then goes around the semi circle introducing everyone.
Calum looks at each one in return and then his gaze lands on yours. As a first year to the program and student teaching, you ran into Calum during the intense two week training. Well, you two didn’t really run into each other. Calum ran a few sessions during the training and you might have purposefully lingered behind on the free range Q&A that he was a part of with a few other experienced student teachers. He seemed to be calm and level headed about all the teaching and you were quite the opposite, so listening to him answer questions gave you a small amount of peace.
The second reason you lingered until everyone else was gone and asked their questions is because you thought he was attractive. The baggy t-shirt but nice fitting jeans and the way he titled in when he was listening to someone. He seemed to really care and take his time to answer any questions--even when he had other things he needed to attend to as well. “Hey,” he says as his smile brightens around your name.
“Hi Calum,” you return. “Slumming it with us first years.”
“I would never call it slumming, not in the slightest,” he laughs in return. The conversation steers away from that, talking about the summer and general shared interests. But every so often you and Calum lock eyes, gazes lingering for way longer than you’d like to admit. Mostly because you don’t want to be this into someone so early into the semester. And truth be told, the semester hadn’t even truly started.
About ten minutes pass before professors start to approach, a couple of them holding boxes of pizza. And while you definitely weren’t sure how to juggle all the responsibilities of teaching, classes, paying rent on time, you were grateful for the lunch of pizza. It also meant that you’d be taking some home if enough people didn’t go in for seconds. And getting a free meal plus an easy dinner was always worth it.
As the pizzas are lined up, you linger back, not wanting to be the first person to get food, but close enough to the first brave souls. “So, have you done any exploring around town?” Calum asks from behind you.
You spin to half face him to talk to him. “Not a lot. By the time we get done with training I’m too tired to do anything else. But I need to get my bike looked at, so I probably should get downtown at the very least.”
“What’s up with your bike? You said it was your main mode of transportation.”
“Just double checking tire pressure--nothing major. One of them feels like it’s not as high as the other. But rather be safe than sorry since the semester starts.”
Calum nods and shuffles up as the line moves. “If you need a ride to the shop, I have my car.”
You’re not sure if Calum’s offering just to be nice or if it means more. So you default to telling him he doesn’t have to, but he insists. And even as you’re grabbing a slice of pizza and Calum’s right behind you, you try to tell him that he shouldn’t completely disturb his whole day just for you.
“I cannot have you blowing a tire on the side of the road. Do you have your bike with you today? We could go after this.”
If there were any way to die right in this moment, you’re wishing for it. “I do,” you answer cautiously, walking towards the metal picnic tables. “But really, I can do by myself. It’s not that big of a deal.”
“Oh, c’mon, this town’s not necessarily the nicest to cyclists and if you got stranded I’d feel like an ass.” Calum settles across from you on the bench, slipping his backpack off his shoulder. You do the same, setting your backpack next you and pulling your water bottle from the side pocket.
“I don’t know what your plans are. I don’t want to intrude,” you counter, unscrewing the top to your water bottle to take a sip.
“My plans were to sit in my office and pretend like I was lesson planning.”
“Where’s your office again?”
Calum rattles off the name of the building, before taking his first bite of pizza. And you swear for a moment the universe is fucking with you. It has it out for you. “I’m in the same building,” you state.
“I’m in room 138.”
Oh, how cruel is the universe. How fucking cruel could it be. “Same,” you state after finishing your bite of pizza. “Haven’t been inside to see it yet though.”
“Oh, it sounds like I’m your personal tour guide today.” And it’s not that he’s being adamant about it. Because you know if you were in the reverse positions, you’d do something similar. But a glint crosses his eyes, his smile is a slight curl of his lips and he’s looking up at you from underneath his lashes.
Your stomach flutters, and suddenly pizza looks and feels like lead, but you take another bite to do something other than let panic settle. A quiet settles between the two of you as you eat. Though more people are turning up and settling in around you to make up for the silence. A few more minutes pass, even with you tossing away your plate and saying hi to some other people who are also teaching for the first time this year before you hear the professors calling for the group’s attention.
As the group quiets down, you return back to the spot where your bag is and Calum’s still there, laughing at something Derrick is saying. You catch his gaze and you really only think that you should look away. But you do. He’s too fucking handsome not to keep your gaze lingering for a moment longer. The humorous smile changes, becomes more subtle as the two of you continue to gaze at each other.
You can feel your cheeks getting hot but slowly feel your own smile over taking your face before you cast your gaze down and then flick it back up to who’s speaking. It’s good information to get, as you listen to each professor in turn talk about the program more. You get a good sense of who each person is, and it’s not too much longer before each of the new and old cohort introduces themself.
It’s a natural break as everyone starts to talk again with the business now out of the way. You mingle with some of the instructors but gravitate towards the snacks that are available. Just as you get a good grasp on one of the oreos, your name is called out. You spin, making sure to keep the Oreos in a tight hold. Calum waves you over to the group he’s in and you walk over. You know you shouldn’t. You know you’re playing with fire. But you do so anyway and he introduces you to some other people in the same year as him. They weren’t at the student teacher training.
You’re thankful for the introduction but slowly the conversation drifts to the group joking about something that you seem to be missing and you know almost without thinking that Calum’s going to seize this opportunity. You turn to him first. “I like the vibe of this program,” you start.
He smiles. “I’m glad. It’s all pretty tight knit.” You nod, agreeing with this point, but also not sure if you’re reading the air between you and him correctly either. “Do you wanna duck out now?” he asks quietly. “Get that bike fixed up for the first day of classes.”
“Ye-yeah, that’s cool.”
He nods over to where your belongings are with a smile. And the two of you gather your things. As you lead Calum over to where you locked up your bike you pause. “Wait,” you start, “do you even have a place to strap a bike down?”
“My friends and I bike the trails a lot during the year. My SUV can handle it, I promise,” he returns with a laugh. The two of you walk side by side down the parking lot. “Where do you call home?” he asks.
You rattle off the answer and in return ask him the same. “Well home home is Australia. But I came to the states with some mates and we’ve sort of always called California a second home.”
“You beat me the longest distance from home,” you laugh.
“Well, only on a technicality.”
“So like your mom, dad, and siblings--if you have any--are like clear across the world?”
“Mum and Dad are. Sister’s in London.”
“Is she studying too?”
“Singer--she’s over there doing that.”
You hum. “Is singing a family trait?”
Calum laughs and you watch some lights blink from a car and you spy the keys in his hand. “I wouldn’t call it a family trait. But yeah, we all sing. In our own ways. Originally made some moves for music. Career paths changed just a tiny bit.”
“So you and the friends you moved with were in a band?”
“Of sorts. Went well for a while. Then we just needed rest.”
“So your idea of rest is going to school and teaching?” You laugh. Calum opens the trunk first for your bags. And when he closes it, you finally spot the rack to set your bike on.
“Like I said, career paths took a turn. Rest or new experience--I’ve yet to decide on the name yet.”
With the bike settled and secure, you walk around to the passenger side door. Calum’s quick to turn the air on in the car once he’s inside. His radio starts up immediately and he scrambles to turn it down. “Sorry, don’t wanna blast you out of the car,” he states.
“No, no worries.”
“Any requests? You can plug your phone in too, if you want.”
“Oh God, I take over the aux and you’re going to get some anime theme song and I’d rather save myself the embarrassment.”
Calum’s chuckle is quick and clear of the click of the seatbelts. He switches over the radio and hands you the white cord. “Now you have to embarrass yourself.”
“That’s what I get for opening my big mouth.” Plugging the cord in, you shuffle for a decent opening song as the truck starts backwards out of the parking spot.
“So what about you? How did the universe drop you here?”
“Pure determination and spite,” you laugh as the song starts over the speakers. “I finished my undergrad, worked for a couple years and then promptly said this is not what I want to do forever and started looking to go back to school.”
“Pure determination and spite,” Calum repeats. He keeps his attention heavily on the road as he’s driving out of the park and through the neighborhoods. But once he hits a stretch of main road he can glance over to you. And you’re staring out of the front windshield, head slightly tilted. “You look lost in thought?”
“Just admiring the view.”
And Calum hums, a sound of agreement, but the view he’s enjoying isn’t the sight of campus and the surrounding area. The two of you continue on, weaving around some traffic and soon you’re turning down a side street. One that reminds you almost of home. And maybe that’s just the universality of it all. Almost anything could be home if you wanted it to be, because there was always going to be a piece of a place that you could connect too.
“The guys here are nice and really quick about anything that’s a simple fix,” Calum offers. “Also, your music isn’t that bad.”
Your jaw drops just a little and a small squawk of indignation falls from your lips. “What’s that supposed to mean?” you ask, jumping out of the car. Calum’s already at the back, pulling your bike from the secure rack.
“It means that having an anime theme song play would’ve made it ten times better.”
You huff, but follow behind him into the shop. The two of you greeted almost immediately and when the guy working on the floor spies the bike, he’s quick to walk over and see what the issue is. You explain that you’ve noticed a difference in tire pressure. In your move your gauge got misplaced and you hadn’t quite yet had time to get someone to look at it until now.
“Yeah, we can check that for you. No problem. So any other plans for today?” he asks, making small talk. You talk briefly about the weather, though there’s not quite a lot to talk about it. Not too long later, the guy’s able to confirm that one of tires did have something puncturing it and letting out some air. But he’s quick to let you know that they can fix it in just a few minutes if the two of you have it.
“I’d greatly appreciate it,” you start and then look at Calum, who just shrugs. “Yeah, can you fix it?”
“Sure can. Just give me a few minutes.”
“Thank you.”
You watch Calum browse, trying not to linger on the way his back moves underneath the t-shirt as he reaches up for something along the walls. And it’s like asking to get into trouble. Though there’s nothing wrong with instructors dating. You just had a plan, that's all.The first semester you’d get settled, figure out what this whole student teaching life was all about. And the more you watched Calum, the more you were sure that plan was going to fall apart.
“Here she is, all fixed up.” You look up from your spot, in the store, having migrated to the opposite end of the door and walk over to the man with your bike. “Just a little puncture. Nothing too bad.” He rattles off the costs and it’s more than you anticipated, but not so much more that you have complaints.
Calum’s quick to take over the bike and walk it back outside, smiling as you hold the door open for him. “Thanks.”
“No, thanks to you. For chauffeuring me around.”
“Oh, it’s nothing,” he returns, getting the bike back onto the rack. “Did you want to explore some nearby shops?”
“Oh, hmm. Maybe later. I haven’t an ounce of lesson plans just yet. So I think I should maybe get my week 2 planned.”
“Well it sounds like you have something of week one planned,” Calum counters.
“We were forced. Thanks to orientation.”
He laughs. “Yeah, they wanted you to have that down at least.”
In the brief glance around, as you try to tell yourself, you shouldn’t explore, you spy a little coffee shop. It looks intriguing. And you point out the sign. “Have you ever tried them?”
“Yeah--it’s a really good shop.”
You take a small step towards the building, careful though because you’re still in the parking lot and about to head into the street. “Can I tack on just a tiny bit of exploring and grab a cup?”
“Of course.”
“Recommend anything?”
Calum holds the door open as he speaks. “Chai Latte, but you can’t tell anyone that it was me that recommended it.”
“Your secret it safe with me.”
In line, you try not to think about how close Calum is, as he stands behind you. But you can feel him, or maybe you want to feel it, you’re aware of him that it’s like all you’d have to do is fake a clumsy step back to be resting into his chest. You imagine it to be firm, but somehow cozy. And maybe that’s just the worn t-shirt he’s adorned in and the beanie on his head. But his presence feels soft to you.
Your daydream doesn’t last long as the line shuffles forward and you take the step forward rather than the step backward. The coffee shop is quaint, the wide windows letting in plenty of sunlight. But the tables are dark brown and look worn from your place in line. It feels lived in and you enjoy that even though the outside was painted a hunter green, the inside is a pretty beige accented by the chocolate wood of the tables.
“It’s like a dream,” you state in a whisper, taking in the lights in the ceiling and the scattered bodies of students with backpacks at their feet and others whom you assume live in town and are most likely trying to enjoy the last bits of quiet before the rest of the students descend onto the campus and town.
In all your sight exploration, your order is called up and Calum has to get it for you. He smiles though, watching the wonder that fills your eyes. “The offer’s still on the table,” he states, handing over the correct cup t you. “We can explore.”
“Can we raincheck? What does next weekend look like for you?”
He still hadn’t responded to Ashton about the hike. So he doesn’t really have plans. “Free as a bird.”
“Would it be okay? To wait till then?”
“Of course,” he exhales. “I’m not the one still learning with training wheels of teaching. I can do this in my sleep.”
“Oh, so big and tough,” you joke, but head back to the front door. The two of you break back out into the bright sun and it’s warm on your skin. “Just give me a semester. I’ll be able to knock you down a peg.”
And Calum doesn’t doubt that for a second. Not with the way you talked about getting into the program. Inside the truck, you’re handed the aux yet again and this time don’t think twice about plugging it in. “To our office?” he asks.
“You’re not even going to be doing anything for real.”
“I like the sense of productivity.”
“Ain’t that the truth,” you laugh. The drive back to the campus isn’t as long as you thought it would be. But somehow it comes all too quickly. You’re still not sure what’s happening between you and Calum. It’s easy, natural between the two of you. But your plan--you know it’s all going down the drain. All his jokes make you laugh, and you know one or two shouldn’t. And when you do laugh, Calum turns sheepish. He goes quiet, a tiny smile quivering at his lips.
Calum parks in the employee parking lot in front of the building with your office. Both of you climb out at the same time. And with backpacks, coffee, keys and phones all in place you two trek up to the door. “I think it’s only three of us in the office this year,” Calum talks, fishing out the right key on the hook.
“Only three?”
“This used to be an old dorm building. So they can usually stick four of us into the room. But the email we got about office assignments only had three names. There was a fourth, but I don’t know what happened to them. They were in a different English program than us. And I don’t know if they graduated or not.”
“Ah,” you return, stepping through the door behind him. And it doesn’t remind you too much of a dorm, not in the always at least. But when Calum unlocks the door, you can see where it definitely once was an older dorm building thanks to the sink in the corner. “You weren’t kidding, huh?’
“About it being an old dorm? Not in the slightest.” He drops his backpack into the desk on the left side of the room but closest to the window. A couple pictures decorate the desktop. The desk next to him as a blanket and the whiteboard above it, has something written on it. So you assume it’s the third person. The desk on the right, closest to the door has nothing on it. The one closest to the window, across from Calum is also empty.
You walk into the room some more and Calum pulls out his laptop from his bag and then steps around you. “As a heads up, the door stays locked. So you’ll need your key if you go out and close the door. I got locked out once or maybe twice. And it’s definitely not fun.”
You nod. “Thanks for the heads up.”
He smiles and then slips out of the door and you study the empty desk. It’s stupid, trivial to take the one across from Calum, but you drop your backpack into the office chair. The next time you come, you’ll bring desk decorations. To claim which one is yours. Because right now in the depths of your backpack you don’t have much. Well you do have a book that you don’t really need to keep up with too much. Maybe you can leave that.
Exhaling, you get mostly settled and just before you can get your laptop out of the sleeve the door opens to Calum walking through again. The beanie’s now in his hands as he strides across the room and you can’t help but stare at the curls falling from his head. You want to curse him for looking so good. But you force yourself to go back to your screen.
Calum settles back into his chair and watches you, sitting up straighter than he’s ever seen a person sit. And he wishes he wasn’t so chicken shit about it. You fucking asked him to hang out next weekend. But still, it’s like toying the line. Trying to make sure he’s reading the cues right. Maybe not right now, maybe next weekend he can get a better read, make a move. He turns back to his own laptop and finds the syllabus he made from the last semester. He can still use most of it. Though in the spring they had a break and in the fall, now they don’t. So he can delete that week as no class and actually have time for the group project in class that the department requires for them to teach.
A couple hours go by, silence between the two of you, but the clacking of keys makes a chorus around the room. Calum pauses every so often to look over his shoulder. Sometimes you’re deep into work, pushed up into the seat. And once or twice, he found you slouched, staring out at the window next to both of you.
Another hour passes and shuffling ensues behind Calum. He looks over and finds you packing up. “Headed home?”
You nod. “Managed to get the first unit mostly planned. We’ll see how it goes.”
He smiles. “I’m sure it’ll go well.” He goes to turn around and then remembers your bike is still attached to the back of his car. “Oh, let me go with you to get your bike,” he says ,shooting up from his chair. It rolls backwards for a split second but then makes a sudden stop.
“Oof,” you let out, rubbing at your stomach.
“Oh my god,” he rushes out, stepping in closer. “I’m so sorry. Had no clue you were that close. You okay?”
“Yeah,” you laugh and then look up. And Calum’s eyes are a deeper brown that you initially thought. Now that he's closer to you. “Yeah, I’m okay,” you exhale in a breath.
“You sure? I think the Campus Health Services is open. Or you know, urgent care?”
“I don’t think you caused internal bleeding. Just caught me off guard.”
He finally brings his gaze up from where you’ve stopped holding your stomach to your eyes. And he shouldn’t. He shouldn’t let his gaze drop below your eyes, because truth be told he already stared too much at your lips during the entirety of orientation. And he already knows just how plump they are.
It’s silent--almost uncomfortably so. “Can I--I should get your bike,” Calum says, saving himself from sure embarrassment.
He steps around you and you stretch out, capturing his wrist in your hand. “No, what were you going to ask?” you ask. The question leaves you without much thought and you know you shouldn’t ask. But you just can’t help it. Because you almost stretched up to kiss him.
“It’s nothing,” he returns. But he doesn’t pull his wrist away.
“Is it really nothing?”
Calum feels you step in closer. He inhales and lets it slowly. He shouldn’t. He absolutely should not let the question cross his lips. But he turn, and sees you illuminated by the sun from the windows and god, how can he deny an angel standing in front of him. “I was going to ask if I could ask you a question.” And it’s not really what he was going to ask. But it buys him some time.
“You can ask me.”
“Do you--is this--,” he exhales, for a moment hating that the words are getting caught in his throat. “I don’t know if you’re feeling the same thing I am. But I-I’ve been interested in you, like from the second I saw you at the orientation. And I really, really don’t want to make a fool of myself. But I was hoping, are you interested? In me?”
There it goes--the plan--down the drain in just a few sentences. “If you’re asking if I thought you were attractive, yes. And if you’re asking if I care to see where this goes, the answer is also yes. But it really wasn’t supposed to go down like this.”
The elation covers his face and makes his cheeks push up as he smiles--so much so that the skin around his eyes crinkles. “I’ll gladly interrupt all your plans.”
You scoff at the sentiment, but feel your body heating up. Calum steps in even closer to you. His fingers find yours and thread them together. “So the real question I had was if I could kiss you? But I wasn’t sure if that was too forward.”
“Too forward a minute ago. But not too forward for right now,” you state, already moving in to kiss him. It’s short, longer than a peck, but not quite long enough. Because as you pull away, Calum’s other hand is cupping the back of your head and keeping you closer. His hold is firm but his lips are soft and you melt, knees buckling just for a moment. Thankfully, you manage to recover quickly. It doesn’t stop Calum from chuckling.
“Are you telling me that I have that kind of effect on you?”
“Shut the fuck up, and kiss me again,” you state breathlessly. He doesn’t need to be asked twice. His lips capture yours again, happy to finally get a small taste of you. And you’re acutely aware that it must look ridiculous--you with your backpack full to the nines pressed up against Calum’s chest, chasing down his lips because his touch is mixing in with the scent of his cologne and all you know for sure is that it’s an intoxicating mixture that you want to be trapped in forever.
You pull away, needing just a moment to catch your breath and Calum rests his forehead against yours. “Are you sure you want to leave me now?” he teases.
“I--I’ll be honest. The reason why I was leaving was because I knew this was going to happen.”
“Oh? You knew?”
You laugh, cupping his jaw. “Calum, I know one thing for sure. You’re a dangerous man to be around.”
“Oh you’ve just met me. I should be offended.”
“Should be?” you question.
“You’re--I don’t know what. But I knew that I wanted to know you. So whatever words that exist for that--that’s what you are.”
“I’m flattered,” you state softly.
“If you give me 5, I can pack up my stuff and drop you off back at home. Now I’d be an asshole not to drop you off.”
You watch him, pulling back from the closeness. “I can make it home now that my bike’s fixed. Thanks to your insistence.”
“Well, let me insist one more time that I make sure you get home safely.”
“Fine,” you resign. And he’s quick to pack up. Out in the hallway, he takes your hand, threading your fingers again. And it’s natural, easy between the two of you. You bump shoulders, laughing as you step out in the daylight.
Inside his car, you slip back into the passenger seat. But when Calum settles into the driver seat and gets buckled in, he rests one hand on your thigh. Not too high up, nothing too suggestive, but not directly on your knee. You try not to let it fluster you, the ease at which he establishes touch, but your heart races just a little.
You curl your fingers around his palm--it’s something to do with your hands, but also allows you a bit of control. You direct him easily back to your apartment. It’s nearly a straight shot, minus the one left turn needed and when he pulls up into a parking space in front of your building, he squeezes at your fingers just a little.
You face him with a smile. “Thanks, for everything.”
“Yeah of course,” he returns. “So, next weekend? More exploring?”
“I’d like that.”
“I’ll text you about the date and time for sure. Unless we meet again in the office.”
Unbuckling your seatbelt, you laugh gently stretching across the console. “I have a suspicion we shall meet again in the office.”
“Lovely,” he breathes and you meet his lips, capturing them gently before pulling away and grabbing all your things. Your bike is easy to get down and then you lock it back up on the rack outside, even though Calum does help. He leans up against the door and you spy him watching.
“Enjoying the show?” you tease shaking your butt at him at the outside door of the building.
His laughter rings out. “Making sure you get inside safely, actually. But a show is always welcomed.”
