THE ADVENTURE OF CHARLES AUGUSTUS MILVERTON - part one of several, because this is one of my favorite Holmes stories! Ever since I read it I had a feeling there was something more...personal...going on with Holmes's hatred for Milverton than simply a principled stand against blackmail. A lot of this is directly pulled from the books but of course I took it in my own direction!

This is in the Watson's sketchbook series, and specifically references the Hound of the Baskervilles entry in that series :)

There he was, across the room and blissfully unaware. Good. Danny's hand curled around the mini blaster. It had taken him a while to compact all the components but now he was ready. He would finally make Vlad pay for taking away everything from him.

He stalked across the room carefully. He had to make this shot count. If he missed or the older halfa noticed him in any way, he wouldn't be able to get off another. That's why Danny was going no ghost powers. He couldn't risk the old man sensing him.

Danny was so close now. Just a few more steps. His fingers found the trigger. He began to raise his arm.

"You don't have to do this," someone whispered in his ear, catching his arm.

Danny attempted to wrench his arm out of the stranger's grip without drawing attention. "Let go," he hissed.

Instead the grip tightened. "Whatever that man has done to warrant this, I'm sure we can deal with another way."

Danny almost scoffed at that. What did this person know? Absolutely nothing. There was no other way to resolve this. What legal channel would believe him? That the man in front of him was a half ghost that had killed his friends and family in an explosion to trigger his dark side? He was likely to be locked up in a mental institution.

The young halfa could still smell the smoke in the air. If he closed his eyes for too long he would see the flames. The echoes of gloating mixed with cackling still rung in his ears. No, there was no other way.

Danny applied a bit of ghost strength and ripped away from the stranger only for a hand to now fall firmly on his shoulder. "Please, don't do this. Don't throw your life away," the same voice begged.

Danny finally whipped around to confront the one stopping him. He came face to face with blue eyes filled with concern and surrounded by a mop of black hair. "I don't have a life. Now let. Go," he gritted out.

But the stranger didn't. He even went as far as gripping Danny's other shoulder as well. "Believe me. I've been where you are," he said. "There's another path to take."

Anger boiled in Danny. He had taken the other path damnit! He had done everything in his power to go down a different road and life had just forced him right down the original one anyway. This was the only way. A way to prevent the future and make sure Vlad could never harm anyone again.

Danny applied more ghost strength, once away prying himself from the stranger's hands. He turned, resolved in his actions, only to make eye contact with Vlad. No. No no no. He quickly raised the blaster and shot at him but it was too late. The older halfa grinned devilishly as he easily dodged the blast.

Panic immediately spread and the crowd whipped into a frenzy but Danny didn't care. He aimed again but Vlad was quicker. He snaked his way towards the boy and knocked the blaster out of his hand.

"Ah Daniel," he said. "And here I was beginning to think I'd have to hunt you down myself."

Danny curled up a fist and swung at Vlad only for the man to easily catch it. "Come now Daniel. That isn't really the best you can do now is it?"

"No," Danny growled. "This is!"

With his cover now blown and nothing left to lose, Danny shot an Ecto blast from his free fist right into Vlad's chest. The man staggered back and sneered.

"You shouldn't have done that," he hissed.

"And you shouldn't have killed my family!" Danny yelled as he let his transformation wash over him. He would not let this man get away again. Even if it meant sealing his fate with the Bats. Even if it meant death.

Afterwards

Several weeks had passed since the defeat of Iain. Weeks spent rebuilding and reassuring his people. The gentry felt fragile in so many ways after the madman had wreaked his havoc, but perhaps that was the consequence of such a long era of peace. Or, as close to "peace" as was possible for their society.

As for himself...

Camhlaidh stared down at his right arm, now neatly severed from the elbow downwards-- a parting gift from Iain. It had taken some getting used to, for better or worse. Oftentimes, he still moved to use a hand that was no longer there and felt the wave of loss all over again. But if the Physician's idea was correct...

"It should be like maneuvering plants as usual with your abilities, Your Majesty." The fae bustled into view, abruptly taking hold of his arm to examine the stump without a single consideration for personal space. He supposed things as grisly as lost limbs and the like were nothing unusual to one who had seen their fair share of death and gore. Their finger traced up the length of his arm.

"If you anchor it here... The greatest difficulty will be learning to move it as your own, but with time...yes...I believe..."

Their words soon faded into their usual idle mutterings, but Camhlaidh didn't have time to spend another hour listening to their theory and speculation. Closing his eyes, the king focused his breaths.

The familiar pull of the land responding to him tugged, and when he opened his eyes again, he was greeted with the sight of a verdant arm, one made completely of plants. Camlaidh tried to move a few fingers, and the doctor's earlier speculations were correct. It was difficult, and clunky. His command of plants was always active, whereas reaching for an object or moving a finger had never required any thought. It would take some training to utilize well.

The Physician's eyes lit up with glee, and already they had begun muttering under their breath of the exercises and tests they would develop to aid the king in growing used to his new arm.

Cherry-ka's Trunk's Scents

that I'm thinking of full-sizing (with bonus thoughts from my mother)

1. The Butler (tea, cedar, gunpowder, greasepaint)

A very sophisticated scent. This starts of with that waxy greasepaint smell, then blooms into something clean. Reminds me of wood polish with a hint of a black tea. I wear this when I dress up to add that extra layer of sophistication. (Bonus: my mom says this smells like lemon bathroom cleaner)

2. Spoiler Warning (lilac, vanilla, spice, honey, hot cocoa)

This starts off with a strong cocoa note, and as it dries down, the honey starts to warm it up. I don't like most cocoa notes, but this one works for me with the powdery lilac softening it. (Bonus: my mom says this smells like poop)

3. The Steward (earl grey, lavender, cucumber, cream)

It's earl grey lavender tea, what more do you want me to say? Okay, I actually don't get a lot of bergamot (what gives earl grey that bitter citrus smell) in this. It's mostly creamy lavender, with a hint of a fresh green quality. It's very soothing and I like to wear it when I go to bed, but I don't wear it a lot during the daytime, so I'm not sure I'll end up full-sizing (Bonus: my mom says this makes her hungry)

4. Harlequin (mint, citrus, florals, evergreen)

This seems like it would be very similar to Flying (mint, florals, fir),but the citrus makes it a whole other thing. Plus, I feel like the evergreen in Harlequin isn't fir, but I'm not sure what it is. Anyway, the citrus makes this bright and bouncy and I wore the sample a lot during the summer, because the citrus/mint combo reminds me of lemonade w/mint which I love. (Bonus: my mom says this smells like toothpaste)
