I've only posted about metal family once before on this blog but holy shit season 2 episode 3 is fucking...

I mean, the whole thing is amazing, but specifically the detail about them opening for Twisted Sister. Because it's not JUST a popular band at the time and their big break. It's important thematically.

Their album was Glam's first introduction to rock music, or anything beyond classical, which is especially important considering the abuse he suffered under his father, Gustav.

In his mind, they turned music from something forced upon him, something strict and cold and stressful, something he had to recite the exact same way over and over, and transformed it into what it, what all art, was always meant to be: Expression. Catharsis. Joy.

And that's what gave him the strength to leave, because he finally saw a way out, finally realized that life doesn't have to be this way.

It was how Glam became... Well, Glam.

And in this episode, he is presented with his first, possibly only opportunity to OPEN for them. To meet them, to shake their hand and tell them, in person, 'your music saved my life'. And to actually mean it with everything.

And yet, when Chive needs him, he stays. He passes up that chance.

Because it's at that moment he realizes, it's not Twisted Sister that saved him.

It was Chive.

If he had found that record on his own, sure his mind would've been opened, but without Chive, without his support and friendship, he would've either spent his life wanting something he couldn't have, or broken free and been totally lost on where to go from there.

He saved his life without even realizing it. And there's no way in hell he's gonna abandon him in his time of need.

oh i LOVE RoyTim on it's own! likely bc i'm just a Tim multishipper and if it fits i ship, but Roy is especially fun via the Dick connection. and i 1000% agree, *especially* pre-Flashpoint, would even argue it's outright canon that Dick is far more protective of Tim and Damian than he ever was with Jason (not out of dislike, but simply bc Dick and Jason were never all that close and the tragedy of losing Jason was losing what could've been, not what he already had) and especially with Jason as Red Hood, Dick holds no particular protective brotherly feelings toward him. it's all Tim and Damian. so you're so right, the drama of RoyTim is just a smidge more upped than of JayRoy and i'd love to share headcanons-

i think it makes for a fun "crush on your older brother's friend" situation. where like. Tim knows it's unrealistic and he has no *actual* intentions to chase it when he's just 15/16 and Roy and Dick are in their twenties, often hanging out around Tim. and Roy is handsome, he's funny, he's similar in personality to ppl Tim has dated (Steph, Kon) so, it's a crush. one that he hides *well* and never makes it Dick or Roy's problem, and one Tim never expects to pan out. he just fantasizes about Roy a little bit and mostly grows out of it by the time he's an adult.

i think more fics need Lian, so i like the idea of them co-parenting Lian. especially if they're both. sort of bad at it. like Roy loves her and he's trying, but he's doing this basically alone and it's not like he has experience. Tim also has no experience. neither of them know what on earth to do. it's a very cute idea that just relies on the two of them being terrible at parenting and Roy getting so mad that the first time Lian says "dada" she says it to Tim that he considers breaking up for a good five minutes.

how they get together can happen in a lot of ways, but i'm interested in the idea of Dick asking Roy to talk to Tim during Tim's Red Robin arc. Roy has experience helping kids through his work helping young addicts and nothing else has worked, so he offers to at least try with Tim. and Roy, who also doesn't handle grief well, understands at least some of what Tim is going through. especially since Roy dealt with Oliver dying and then suddenly coming back, he's at least open to the idea Bruce could be alive. he's just around to try and help Tim keep some emotional stability, but it ends up with Roy helping with the search and somehow, falling for Tim along the way

they go to sitcom levels of chaos trying to keep the relationship hidden from Dick. they *both* know Dick is far too protective of Tim to react well to it. but also, i think Roy would get *just* a bit of an ego about sleeping with Tim under Dick's nose. he makes a point of strutting around when Dick invites him over, finding reasons to be shirtless just to make Tim squirm a little bit. it's that sort of kink where you're excited about the risk of being caught. that fits these two so well and i can't explain it.

because Roy is used to mentoring younger heroes, i think he would have a bigger than normal moral panic about dating Tim. he fights his feelings for a *while*, to the point Tim can tell Roy is fighting his feelings and he's trying to convince Roy he's fine with this. Tim telling Roy about his childhood crush does not help. it makes Roy feel *worse*. it makes them take things very slowly, and i could see Roy being the type to never fully touch Tim until Tim is 18, no matter how much Tim insists it's okay.

i do think they have unhinged sex when they actually get into it though. no matter how sure Roy is that he'll be gentle the first time, the minute he gets his hands on Tim, it is feral. there is blood and foul dirty talk and Tim cannot walk the next day. i think Roy makes for a very mean dom, the type who will make fun of you for being a mess in bed. he just has those vibes, and it works great for getting Tim to just. turn his brain off.

i think Roy, who's struggled with picking hero names before, would be someone to try to force Tim to let go of Red Robin once the whole Bruce thing is over. it's not Tim's name and Tim doesn't need to keep punishing himself with it. Roy is nice about it at first, but then i do think he threatens to set that damn suit on fire if Tim keeps wearing it and doesn't come up with a new hero name. and the worst part is, Tim does know he's serious.

when Dick does find out, chaos. an absolute shitshow. when Roy tells him, Dick punches Roy in the face before he even finishes explaining himself. it's a pure gut reaction. even Bruce isn't as protective over Tim as Dick is. it takes a *lot* of convincing from Tim that it's okay and he wanted this before Dick calms down, and he still doesn't talk to Roy for like a month until the rest of the Titans are forced to hold an intervention reminding Dick of his own dating history with age gaps, like Babs. Dick does cool down, but he is not afraid to stoop to "you're fucking my brother" in an argument bc he wins everytime when he brings it up.

i think Tim is the protective partner. everyone *expects* it to be Roy, he's older and more experienced, but it's Tim who will absolutely lose it if someone threatens Roy's or Lian's life. like not fanonish "committing murder" Tim, but more so canonish "i have a contingency plan for everything" Tim. Roy has had to hold him back a couple times. honestly i think the moral conversations Roy and Tim have are so interesting. because Roy will cross the line for those he loves, so bc of that, Tim is careful to make sure Roy is never in a position where he has to protect Tim bc he knows it would turn lethal quickly. it's a very "i know what you're capable of and you don't scare me but i won't let you become a worse version of yourself bc of me" sort of self preservation vibe. i think it'd be very neat. Tim fights like hell when he's close to death bc his thought is always "i refuse to let Roy feel like he has to avenge me" which i find very crunchy.

@goakizaizinski asked me ages ago about my zexal ship opinions and i forgot to answer, but since it's on my mind, here are some of my thoughts (which are mostly durbe-centric because, duh)

first, durbe/nasch. atem/mahad was my bread and butter when i was super into dm, so i'll always have a fondness for this pair -- and yet, at the same time, i find more and more that i prefer it unrequited on durbe's end if it's just the two of them. i guess i just like being mean to durbe? 😂 but it also means i can use yūma/shark as a plot device to push durbe and kotori together. (i'm pretty lukewarm about yūma/shark outside of this express purpose. it's totally fine, i just don't have strong feelings about it.)

"durbe and kotori?? did they interact even a single time???" yes, actually, and i haven't been the same since. they have archlord kristya in common and durbe's deck can natively go into fairy cheer girl, which was a very popular option during star seraphs' heyday in duel links. case closed. nah, i really don't know how to explain this one? it kind of blossomed from my generally negative feelings toward kotori/yūma, which...... i'll try to keep short, because ship bashing isn't my thing, but kotori/yūma in canon is all give and no receive on her part and it's genuinely really sad. the way she identifies astral as yūma's most important person right after she confesses her feelings to him is just,, ouch. like it literally feels cruel when it's clearly not meant to be. and it's not meant to be because women being unilaterally dedicated to men who pour their own emotional energy into other men is regrettably common, not just in yugioh, not even just in anime or media. but i digress. durbe and kotori are both nurturers in very different ways and i think letting them both experience that would be really good, because neither of them is used to being on the receiving end of that kind of care. plus durbe is borderline comically serious and kotori can be such a silly birb, i think they'd make a fun pair 🩷

since we're already touching on big ships. yūma/astral. eh. the irony is that i actually started watching zexal for them. i do more or less consider it canon? but not in a way where i care all that much about it. part of it's that i find yūma to be the least interesting part of zexal, which i hate to say because i also feel that the story generally benefits from how unremarkable he is -- he's supposed to be this more or less normal kid who has no stake in these interpersonal and interdimensional conflict, he just has a huge heart and wants to help people. i also just... don't remotely buy that astral's maturity is on the same level as a 13-year-old's. (it's really funny to me that the same people who get up in arms about age gaps have no issue with these two. they have an even bigger gap than atem and yūgi. it's almost like they're hypocrites or something... 🤔) obvious disclaimer that i'm not remotely suggesting it's ""immoral"" to ship this -- ships can't be immoral -- i just personally don't because of the huge maturity gap from my pov.

i made this post to talk about durbe and the twins and got sidetracked. durbe/merag. s tier. god, i love holyice more and more every day, i swear. i like it by itself and i like it as part of a throuple with nasch, whereas durbe/nasch i prefer as one-sided except in the context of durbe/nasch/merag. i need to get around to publishing something with these two asap. i wish i had more words but my brain genuinely just goes !!!!!!!!🩷🩷🩷 can't wait to subject everyone to my hyper specific headcanons.

all of this also applies to durbe/rio, though i actually like durbe/ryouga a smidge more than durbe/nasch, whereas durbe/merag and durbe/rio are about the same? maybe it's that both incarnations of rio get less focus than her brother and as such, don't feel as distinct in their dynamic with durbe, in spite of how much i like to play with her both being and not being merag. durbe and ryouga are really petty and that's funny.

i quite like durbe/mizael and i've been kicking around the idea of durbe/thomas. i like kaito/chris despite my apathy towards kaito, but i supremely don't care about kaito/mizael. have i forgotten any big ones?? kotori/cathy and kotori/anna are fun. astral/96 was my old stomping ground and i still have a soft spot for it. i like 96/akari and astral/akari, too. yūma/96 is okay but inferior to other 96 ships. i only like 96/vector when vector isn't an uwu innocent victim and vector/yūma when it's properly fucked up. yūma/fūya, yūma/kaito, yūma/michael and michael/kotori are cute. michael/astral and especially michael/mizael seem fun in my head. i want to see fūya/anna explored more, too, i just don't care to do it myself.

my kaito apathy means kaito/ryouga doesn't do much for me, either. i like thomas/rio and vector/rio a little more than thomas/shark and vector/shark, but see the appeal in the latter pairs as well. i like @shifuto's astral/shark stuff even if i'd never think of it on my own. kotori/rio deserves more love -- too much of the content feels really performative for me. if i think of a ship i forgot i'll edit this.

I can't help with much else, but I can perhaps help provide some scale, because looking at the far-away pics, it IS very difficult to get a good idea of how big she is and why stopping her would be a feat outside the capabilities of pretty much any current bridge support. Maybe there is one out there that could withstand impact, but I have my doubts.

Here's the boat, DALI, before all of this:

Those blocks on the deck are shipping containers. Shipping containers on an understandable scale look like this, and typically range from 10 feet long to 40 feet long, though from what I can tell, the ones on freighters like this are mostly 20ft (at least, their carrying capacity is determined by how many 20 foot containers they can carry).

These things are huge, and DALI was carrying around 4700 of them.

DALI is ~300 meters (984ft) long and 47 meters wide (157ft). An American football field is 110x49m. So if you placed 3 football fields end to end, this ship would be a smidge skinnier and 10% shorter than that. To TRY to give you a sense of scale, here's a football field with some 6ft picnic tables at the side closest to the camera, some cars and people, and a building in the back with 2 stories to it (click to see bigger)

So you have an object nearly 1,000ft/300m long, 150ft/47m wide, carrying 4700 shipping containers and weighing 95,000 tons, going 9 knots (a little over 10mph/16kph) and heading for a major bridge support, which looks like this:

Now, I can't speak as to why they're shaped the way they're shaped, but considering all the ones I've seen are shaped relatively similarly, I suspect there's a good reason that likely includes wind and water and the way bridges like this wiggle and sway normally when there's wind/weather.

I think it's also worth looking at the two objects (ship vs bridge) up close. I'd only seen the video of the impact once, and it was filmed in the dark from relatively far away. Similarly, a lot of the photos are bird's eye view, which makes both things look small, but the bridge was over a mile and a half long. I think it's worth seeing the ship in comparison to the bridge post impact to compare sizes when you're up closer:

So, I may not be able to explain the structure of the bridge support, but I CAN fully agree with the above, that there really wasn't any way a bridge support wasn't succumbing to that ship upon impact. It's just too big, and too heavy. Figuring out the logistics of actually stopping something THAT large very quickly (and doing so SAFELY, as you can see some of the containers have shifted/fallen over) is beyond the vast majority of people.

That being said, like the second OP suggested, you can find your senators here and your house reps here, if you want to contact them regarding this issue. As of a day ago, Biden called for the federal government to cover the cost of rebuilding the bridge, but it requires approval from congress- the people you would be contacting to say you want them to support Biden's call for the federal government to pay to replace the bridge as quickly as possible.

There is some pretty shocking footage out there of the Baltimore bridge collapse early this morning. I've already seen some incredibly wrong, incredibly insensitive Hot Takes about how shitty the bridge was to have fallen after being bonked by a boat, etc

Please don't be that person.

The facts will come out. Speculation is silly. In addition to loss of life, the Francis Scott Key bridge was a major arterial in that region's highway system. Its loss will be felt for years, and not just to daily commuters.

Baltimore harbor is closed. No shipping at all. This will impact supply chains in ways we cannot even assess yet.

Two months. It’s been two months. Not that you’d really had a timeframe on when you thought they’d arrive - you knew they got busy on jobs for Cid, among other things. You knew they wouldn’t come here in haste, either, not if it would put you in danger. And okay, Wrea wasn’t exactly the easiest planet to get to, but that’s why you picked it. Still, that knowledge didn’t make it any easier. Every day that had gone by since you activated the tracker started with unbridled hope, and ended with crushing disappointment when they didn’t show up.

Deep down, you hate to admit that you’re scared. You’re scared something happened to them, that they won’t be coming, that that part of your family has died a horrible death.

So when you hear a ship landing on the outskirts of the village you don’t think anything of it, except for how kriffing loud it is. You don’t hear the murmurs of your fellow villagers, your friends and neighbors. You don’t even see anything as you’re hunched over working in your small garden, lost in your own little world, until a booming shout of your name echoes across the village, and you turn just in time to see Wrecker bounding towards you for a split second before you’re being swept up in his arms.

He spins you around and sets you down in front of the rest of your boys, and as they each hug you (and, in the case of Tech, begin asking you a million questions) tears spring to your eyes. You’re just so inexplicably happy, that you can almost forget that your family is still incomplete. Almost, because in the midst of the others joining tech in his line of questioning, you hear something.

Hunter hears it too, because as you turn abruptly to him in the middle of answering a question from echo, you notice his eyes widen almost comically.

“Did you tell them?” You practically whisper, not sure what you’re hoping the answer will be.

“No,” He shakes his head solemnly, and makes a frustrated gesture under the incredulous gazes of his brothers, just now realizing he’s known more than them all along. “She told me not to!” He sputters, and you stifle a snort as you feature for them to all follow you inside your small hut.

The noise that had alerted you and Hunter has since stopped, but you know it’s time.

“I’ll be right back,” you assure them as they protest at being left alone in the main room, eager to keep you in their sights. “I’m going to go get something that will explain… well… everything, I hope.”

You can hear their whispers as you slip into the only other room in the hut, gathering up a small bundle and carefully tucking it to your chest. Taking a few deep, steadying breaths, you turn and walk back to the main sitting room.

“Hunter, Tech, Wrecker, Echo,” you begin, but you’re met with quizzical gazes as the bundle wriggles a bit, followed by gasps from everyone (even Hunter) as a small head of tousled silver hair and honey brown eyes peek out at them from the blankets. You inhale deeply, calming your nerves as best you can.

“Meet Amaia.”

To their credit, they all figure it out pretty quickly. Why you left, why you stayed hidden. Wrecker immediately bursts into the biggest grin you’ve ever seen on the man, and is cooing over Amaia and asking if ba’vodu Wrecker can hold her. Tech only gapes like a fish for a solid fifteen seconds before congratulating you, and asking if he might be allowed to run some genetic tests later. Echo is holding back tears as he cradles Amaia’s head with his hand as Wrecker holds her, emotion all over his face. Hunter leans back against the wall, though, watching you and his brothers with a wistful half smile on his face. You leave Amaia in the hands of her ba’vode, and take your place on the wall next to him.

“Thanks for keeping my secret,” you whisper, quickly squeezing his hand. He hums in response, his gaze fixed on her. “Amaia, huh?” He questions. “A beautiful name for a beautiful girl.” He turns to face you, and suddenly you can see the love and pride shining in his eyes. You both stand there for a while, basking in the love that was practically pouring out of your little home.

“So… you ever gonna tell Crosshair?” He asks out of the blue. It would have startled you, but you’d thought long and hard about this, and you smirk as you turn to face him.

“Actually, you are.”

She's shy. Like really shy. Sylvia is actually selective mute and will only talk with people she's comfortable with. Girlie is quiet, scarily so, like her foot steps can't be heard so a lot of the time she has to purposefully stomp to not scare another people. Once she's more comfortable, she does talk more atleast but Shirubia is more of a listener. She's autistic and blind so she doesn't understand verbal and visual cues.

Here are some disorders, she got ADHD, PTSD and crippling anxiety! She's getting therapy dw.

Extra trivia!:

Tony's nickname for her is Pinky, since like a baby mouse, she's pink and she squeaks when surprised. Don't think a mouse punches you after it squeaks though.

To make up for her disablity, her hearing and touch is enhanced, though it makes wounds more painful. And it does make her more sensitive to extreme temperarures.

She has 8 plants in her room. All of them are alive and healthy, since raising plants is therapy for her.

Insomniac since she gets night terrors. Plays the piano or read a book(her favourite gebre is fantasy and romance)(in braille) to pass the time.

Oh and I forgot to mention she can play the piano, very well actually.

Love your writing and I can tell you've thought a lot about Xue Yang, so I'm going to ask you what your thoughts are on his age in the CQL version? I made a costume post jokingly talking about how he's hot in the Chang massacre scenes and got to thinking and am now worried he was still a minor at that point. I headcanon everyone in CQL as like 18 to start w and was shocked to find out WWX n co were like 15/16 in the novel. From what I could find online, XY's age is up in the air. He refers to himself as a "fully grown man" in that scene. I'm gonna tweak the post probably anyway but I'm curious about your thoughts on his age in CQL specifically. (Also I wonder if you have any thoughts on JGY's age, as he'd have to be at least 18 to ship him w LXC or NMJ without being weird about it. He shares a bday w Peacock. I can't imagine Yanli, who is years older than WWX/JC in CQL, being in love w a 15 yr old at like 19. At least hopefully not.) I hope this all isn't creepy! The age thing has just been bugging me.

oh l o r d. I have thought a lot about Xue Yang but I try to think as little as possible about CQL’s timeline because frankly they seem to have kind of gone “the passage of time? what’s that, don’t know her” and thrown any sense of coherence of time passing and what happens when and how long there is between any given scene more or less out the window. 

I mean, just right off the bat we see the show open with “sixteen years ago” for Wei Wuxian’s death, but then for the flashback (at least the translation says) “sixteen years ago” also, which would mean that all the events of the flashback episodes happen over the course of a year, which considering there is I’m pretty sure a canonical year gap and definitely at least a three month gap, and a nine month gap for Jiang Yanli to be pregnant in...is kind of mathematically impossible. 

and it just kind of gets more bonkers from there!!!

as a rule, therefore, I just kind of tend to fling my hands up in the air about ages in CQL and go “WHATEVER! THEY’RE [MUTTERS VAGUE NUMBER] AND I’M GOING FORWARD FROM THERE” because...yeah, I mean, it’s just. bizarre and kind of unintelligible. 

I put Jin Guangyao as close to Nie Mingjue/Lan Xichen’s age but a smidge younger, I put Jiang Yanli as about three years older than the Gusu Lan trio, and don’t get too fussed about the age gaps w/r/t pairings because nobody’s getting into relationships until they’re older anyway. 

and there’s a big power imbalance between Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue, for instance, in their early relationship, that has nothing to do with age and everything to do with station and I think if we’re talking about “healthy” relationships (we’re not, that relationship isn’t healthy, it is a mess) then I’d put that as probably the bigger problem.

but also I maybe am not the best person to ask about any of this because besides the fact that I look at the CQL timeline and give up except on relative terms I also tend to be sort of “eh” about the whole “if you ship a character who is under 18 with a character who is over 18 it is pedophilia” because...yeah, there’s just. there’s not a magical line that makes you an adult the day you turn 19, actually, and power dynamics are not all about age, and consent is not all about age, and anyway I’m going to quit while I’m not too far behind.

anyway, all that being said, I do figure that Xue Yang is probably close in age to the main trio in that scene, maybe even a smidge younger (you will meet a lot of teenagers who will claim to be grown up, and also idk what that translation is so I can’t speak to its accuracy) but also I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with going ‘Xue Yang hot’ in that scene because to be frank his actor is...not a minor, and is hot. it’s just kind of how it is.

(I mean, Xiao Zhan is hot in the Cloud Recesses scenes, and he’s supposed to be like 15 there, and I’m not going to pretend he does not look mighty fine in the scene where he’s firing that arrow and does a thing with his tongue. I am a human woman looking at a very nice looking young man who is very definitely not a teenager.)

He was very sad, he didn't know what to do with his thoughts, it was a rainy night, so he decided to stay in the Bunker instead of going out to the river that he goes when he's sad. Everything was so quiet, and his thoughts were too loud, so he was having a very bad night, even we can call it a "blue night", because he wasn't sad... he was blue, which is worse.

He was writing a poem to try to calm down his mind, but he started to feel frustrated about what he was writing, he felt that it wasn't enough.

He throw the poem to the floor and started to step in it a hundred times strongly.

⛈💢- THIS IS STUPID!- He screamed, maybe a little more loud than he had to, maybe... very loud.

He was frustrated, he was distressed, he was everything but happy. He hates himself in this moment, because his friends did make him happy, they did a lot for him, and now he's sad again. His colors went greyish again, but at least not as much as before. His ears were drop, like dog's.

He growled softly at himself, and let one tear pass by his cheek, the drop get to the floor, and then... he broke, he started to cry a lot, he was being selfish because his friends did the impossible to help him, and he's still sad. Or at least is what he thought.

Poppy heard something weird, like... if someone was crying, she was worried, who could it be?, in all the Troll Village, that is known because its happiness, who could be crying? She began to run to the way where the crying started. She discovered that was Branch's Bunker, she left his ears drop a little, she was worried for him, she wanted to see him happy.

She entered there, without making a single sound, then she hide a bit to see him, who was crying very badly, she felt bad for him, she wanted to do something.

Branch was angry at himself, and now not just because his grandmother, now the fault feeling of can't be happy all the time like the others is present. He kneeled, and covered his eyes, maybe nobody would hear him now, at least is what he thought.

Poppy left her hide, and aproach him, very slowly.

🌈💧- Branch- She murmured, with a soft voice.

🌈💧💬- Hear me out, I... heard you, and... I wanted to help you, you seem... grey- She pet his hair, seeing that it wasn't purple like before.

⛈🌀- You can't understand it, Poppy- He rolled his eyes, then he frowned.

🌈💬- M-Maybe I don't- She said, looking down, with his eyebrows a little down.

🌈💬✨- But I'll try to help you, you're my friend after all- She gave him a smile, a very pure one.

He sighed.

⛈🌀💢- Fine... I can't stand myself, I mean, you guys did everything to make me happy, and... and... and I can't- He let two more revel tears drop to the floor.

🌈💧- Branch, it's okay to be sad, even I was sad one time, do you remember?- She asked softly.

🌈✨💞- Come on, little guy, give me a hug- She smiled again, opening her arms.

Branch saw her, he was very unconfortable, but, he needed it, so he hugged her. He did a very little smile, but a very pure one.

He was very grateful to have friends like Poppy, Biggie, Cooper, Satin, Chenille, Smidge, Guy Diamond, DJ Suki, like all of them. They're his best friends, and they try to make him happy even in his rainy days.

He loves them all.

He's looking forward to eating out and having a good time and feeding his face and indulging and her doesn't mind because he sees him having a good time messes with him though
