If you live in the US or Canada, you should definitely check out this video by Knowing Better on YouTube:
youtube
It’s about the systemic removal of Native Americans from North America by the US government. This stuff really doesn’t get taught in schools, so if you live in the US, it’s important to learn the real history of the land you’re living on, and how it became possible for you to live there at all (hint: it’s brutal colonialism and racism, which have been at work for hundreds of years and are still functioning today).
It’s a long video. Maybe watch it in chunks throughout the week. Maybe watch it instead of marathoning your favorite show one night. We watched this with our partner in one sitting. Regardless of your beliefs about the history of the US, it’s important to understand what actually happened, so we can uplift and support people who are continually mistreated by the US government and understand how these people got in these dire situations in the first place.
Educate yourself. Then learn how you can help.
Once you know the name of the Native American tribe whose land was stolen to become the white developed city where you live, you can see if that tribe still exists, and find out what you can do to best support them (hint: it’s money. Give them money and advocate for them in political and socioeconomic spaces!)
And you can also support any Indigenous population you’re aware of by donating to the tribe, volunteering with their organizations if you live close enough, educating yourself so you can in turn educate others about the rights of Indigenous people in the US, supporting shops and businesses owned by Native Americans, and telling other people you know about the LandBack movement, and how the history of Indigenous people in the US is often muddied, glossed over, or otherwise ignored by the state.
We are not indigenous!! So if any indigenous person you know says something that contradicts what we’ve said here, trust, support, and uplift THEM! Listen to their needs and help them however you can. It’s not easy unlearning bias that’s been fed to us our whole lives by our teachers, caregivers, and politicians. But just because unlearning bias is difficult doesn’t mean no one should have to do it. Please please, if you live in the US or Canada, learn more about the LandBack movement, the real history of the expulsion of Indigenous peoples from North America, and what you can do to help make changes towards a positive future where Indigenous people are supported and uplifted on their own land with their own sovereignty!
Under the cut we’ll include some Native American artists, businesses, and organizations you can support! Thank you very much!
And some Indigenous people we know of personally who we’d encourage you to check out!

In eastern Canadian County, Yukon, Oklahoma, was founded in 1891 by A.N. Spencer. The town was named after the Yukon Territory in Canada, which experienced a gold rush then. Spencer, a Texas cattleman, played a pivotal role in the town’s development by laying railroad tracks through the area. Yukon quickly became a thriving center for local farmers and the milling industry, with the Yukon Mill and Grain Company shipping its products throughout the region and beyond.
The town’s cultural landscape was shaped by an influx of Czech immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These settlers brought their traditions and customs to Yukon, solidifying the town’s reputation as the “Czech Capital of Oklahoma.” Today, this heritage is celebrated annually during the Czech Festival, a beloved event that draws both locals and visitors. The festival features Czech music, dances, and traditional foods, making it one of the most anticipated events in the region.
Over the years, Yukon has evolved from a rural agricultural hub to a thriving suburban community. Its proximity to Oklahoma City has spurred residential development, transforming the town into a commuter-friendly city with modern amenities. By the 2020 census, Yukon’s population had grown to over 23,000 residents, reflecting the town’s steady growth and appeal as a desirable place to live. The city is well-connected by major highways, including Route 66 and Interstate 40, making it a convenient location for those working in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
Despite its modern growth, Yukon remains deeply tied to its past. Architecture, cultural festivals, and local traditions preserve the town's history. Whether it’s the celebration of Czech heritage or the pride in its historic milling industry, Yukon strikes a balance between honoring its roots and embracing the opportunities of the present. This blend of history and modern living makes Yukon a unique and vibrant place to call home.

Title: 10 Effective Local SEO Strategies for Canadian Architectural Firms Search engine optimization (SEO) is no longer an option for Canadian firms in the architecture sector—it’s an absolute necessity. With more than 75% of consumers turning to search engines to find local businesses, a strong local SEO strategy can help your firm appear in those critical search results. You see, SEO isn’t just a buzzword; it's a gateway to visibility and success in today's digital world. So, let's delve into ten effective local SEO strategies tailored specifically for Canadian architectural firms. 1. **Nail Down Your Google My Business (GMB) Listing:** An accurate, well-optimized GMB listing is Canada's answer to being found in local searches. If your firm isn’t registered here, well, it’s akin to hiding your loonie under a toonie—it’s just not sensible. Make sure your listing consistently includes your business name, address, and phone number (NAP information), photos of your work, and encourages customer reviews. 2. **Cultivate Positive Reviews:** Positive online reviews are like the double-double of local SEO, vital and desired. Emphasize obtaining them on your GMB, but remember sites like Yelp and Houzz can't be ignored. Encourage satisfied clients to leave a review detailing their positive experience. 3. **Hyper-Local Keyword Integration:** Statistics from Comscore show that over half of search queries are four words or longer. Try to incorporate long-tail keywords, involving locally-relevant terms such as "Toronto modern architect" or "Vancouver commercial architectural services". 4. **Ensure Mobile Friendliness:** Given how everyone's practically glued to their mobiles these days, it's of paramount importance to ensure your site is mobile-friendly. Optimizing your website for optimal viewing and navigation on smaller screens can significantly boost user experience and your local search ranking. 5. **Optimize for "Near Me" Searches:** Pay attention to geolocation optimization. Frequently, Canadians are on the hunt for businesses that are "near me", so ensure your web pages are optimized for this phrase with respect to your locality. 6. **Voice Search Optimization:** Fun fact: ComScore (2016) had predicted that approx. half of all searches would be voice searches in 2020. Consider the natural speech patterns and phrasing of search terms—often questions—as a part of your keyword strategy. 7. **Build High-Quality Backlinks:** Quality backlinks from reputable, local sites can significantly help in boosting your local SEO ranking. Consider collaborating with Canadian architectural magazines, blogs, or local suppliers for such opportunities. 8. **Localized Content:** Create blog posts, case studies, and project features that are specific to Canadian locations your architectural firm has worked in. This not only adds to your local authority but illustrates tangibly how your firm is best suited for local projects. 9. **Citation Consistency:** Ensure consistent citations—mentions of your business NAP across the web. Discrepancies can create confusion and harm your local SEO. 10. **Leverage Social Media:** While not a direct ranking factor, an active social media presence can increase your visibility and provide another platform for customer interactions. Canadians are quite social media savvy, eh? Remember, implementing these strategies is no walk in the park, it’s more like climbing the CN Tower—but with persistence and strategic work, the view from the top makes every step worth it. Local SEO plays a pivotal role in positioning Canadian architectural firms in their local market, establishing a profound online presence which can translate into considerable business growth. Case Study: Reimagining Local SEO for Winnipeg's "Grandiose Architecture" Introduction Winnipeg-based architectural firm, "Grandiose Architecture", was striving to garnish a more significant slice of the local market share. Recognizing the importance
of online visibility in today's digital landscape, they decided to revamp their Local SEO strategy, following steps outlined below, a process that speaks to the heart of our article's strategy offering. Step 1: Localizing their Website's Content To capitalize on local search trends, Grandiose Architecture began tailoring their website content to appeal to a local audience. They implemented geographic-specific keywords, like "Architects in Winnipeg" or "Manitoba Designers" throughout their site. They also localized their blog content, focusing on architectural trends in Winnipeg and Manitoba. The result was a higher search engine ranking for these specific local searches. Step 2: Google My Business and Bing Places Optimization Recognizing the importance of online directories, they claimed and optimized their business profiles on Google My Business and Bing Places. They ensured that all details in their profiles were accurate and consistently updated with fresh images and content, contributing to higher visibility in local search results. Step 3: Gathering and managing online reviews In the contemporary digital world, online reviews work as positive votes influencing rankings and customer decisions. Understanding this, Grandiose Architecture adopted a proactive approach to gather and manage online reviews. They followed up with clients after project completion, requesting them to review their experiences on Google and other industry-specific review sites. Step 4: Utilizing Local Business Schema To stand apart from competitors, they added structured data markup or schema to their website, providing search engines detailed information about their business, services, and works, which subsequently resulted in search engine showcasing this enriched information in search results. Step 5: Building high-quality local backlinks Grandiose Architecture invested in local link building, aiming to collaborate with local influencers, be featured in local news and blogs, and become active in community events. This approach added credibility to their firm while also improving their local SEO ranking. As a result of these steps, within a span of six months, Grandiose Architecture saw a substantial improvement in their site’s local ranking. Their organic traffic increased by 60%, while leads from online sources saw an impressive surge of 45%. The redesigned local SEO approach significantly enhanced their visibility and stature within the community, demonstrating the effectiveness of the strategies mentioned in the article. This case study serves as a guiding example for Canadian architectural firms looking to improve their online visibility and garner a larger local consumer base using effective local SEO strategies. These strategies are not only actionable and cost-effective but also promise long-term growth and sustainability in today's rapidly evolving digital marketplace. "Don't Miss Out! Harness the power of local SEO for your architectural firm today. Take the first step on your journey to top rankings and more clients. Click here to find out how!" Start Your Digital Transformation Now! "Did you know that 46% of all Google searches are seeking local information? If you run a Canadian architectural firm and are yet to take advantage of local SEO, you could be missing out on potentially half of your digital audience. With the right Local SEO strategies, your practice can rank higher in search results, leading to more visibility and potential clients."

Baytown, Texas, is in Harris and Chambers counties, forming part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Located on the northern edge of the Galveston Bay complex, it is near the confluence of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. It ranks as the sixth-largest city in the metropolitan area and the seventh-largest community, including The Woodlands CDP. Major Baytown highways include State Highway 99, 146, and Interstate 10. According to the 2020 U.S. census, Baytown's population was 83,701, estimated to have grown to 84,324 by 2022.
The area now known as Baytown saw its first White American settlers in 1822. Among these early settlers was Nathaniel Lynch, who established a ferry crossing at the junction of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou, a service still in operation today as the Lynchburg Ferry. Other notable early settlers included William Scott, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, and Ashbel Smith, who owned a plantation in the area.
Initially, Baytown consisted of three separate towns. The first, Goose Creek, was named after the nearby bayou where Canada geese would winter, a name still reflected in the Goose Creek school district established before 1850. The discovery of the Goose Creek Oil Field led to the development of the rival communities of Pelly in the late 1910s and East Baytown in the early 1920s, both emerging as early boomtowns. The "East" in East Baytown was later dropped as it was located west of Goose Creek.
Discussions about merging the three cities began shortly after World War I, but Baytown initially resisted. However, in 1947, the three towns agreed to consolidate under Baytown, officially forming the city on January 24, 1948.
In 1916, the Humble Oil and Refining Company, founded by former Texas governor Ross S. Sterling and his associates, developed the Goose Creek Oil Field, establishing Texas's first offshore drilling operation and the second in the United States. The company later built the Baytown Refinery, one of the world's largest Exxon refineries. Today, ExxonMobil remains a significant employer in the city, operating over ten plants in the area, including a newly announced $2 billion expansion to its chemical facilities in 2019.
The discovery of oil spurred significant population growth in Baytown and the surrounding tri-cities area. This period saw an influx of immigrants, including Jewish families who established the K’nesseth Israel synagogue in 1930.
Steel manufacturing in Baytown began in 1970 when United States Steel opened the Texas Works near the city. The plant was closed in July 1986 due to economic challenges and the decline of American steel in the 1980s. Jindal Steel acquired the facility and now operates as JSW Steel USA, Inc.

Not to be confused with Spotify.
Shopify Inc., stylized as shopify is a Canadian multinational e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario.
Criticism
In 2017, the #DeleteShopify hashtag campaign called for a boycott of Shopify for allowing Breitbart News to host a shop on its platform. Shopify's CEO, Tobias Lütke, responded to the criticism,[109] saying "refusing to do business with the site would constitute a violation of free speech".
In October 2017, Citron Research founder, short-seller Andrew Left released a report which claimed Shopify was overstating the number of merchants using the e-commerce platform and described it as a "get-rich-quick" scheme in contravention of Federal Trade Commission regulations. The day the report was released, the stock plunged more than 11%. Left wrote another report about Shopify in April 2019, stating he believed Shopify's stock price would come down 50% in the next 12 months. In January 2020, Left announced in his annual letter to investors that Citron Research had exited the short position. The reports did not lead to an investigation into Shopify by the FTC.
In July 2022, Shopify was criticized by left-leaning media watchdog Media Matters for hosting the online store of far-right, anti-LGBT influencer Libs of TikTok. In response to Media Matters, a Shopify spokesperson stated that Libs of TikTok was not in violation of the company's Acceptable Use Policy, which "clearly outlines the activities that are not permitted on [the] platform." In November 2022, this criticism was renewed when an article published by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) article highlighted Ottawa City Council member Ariel Troster's criticism of the company in light of a recent shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub. Sharing the CBC article, Nandini Jammi of Check My Ads criticized Shopify on Twitter. In response to Jammi, CEO Tobias Lütke tweeted, "Shopify has a published acceptable use policy and a principled process to apply it. Pressure groups on all sides try to influence it sometimes and CBC needs to see through that not amplify bad faith narrative."
Lawsuits
In December 2021, a group of publishers including Pearson Education, Inc., Macmillan Learning, Cengage Learning, Inc., Elsevier Inc., and McGraw Hill sued Shopify claiming that it had failed to remove listings and stores selling pirated copies of their books and learning materials. The lawsuit was settled "amicably" out of court; the details were not disclosed.
A class-action lawsuit for $130 million was filed in May 2023 by employees who had been laid off.
In June 2023 Shopify announced a fight against "patent trolls" who "stealthily orchestrate hundreds of patent litigation cases yearly", and filed a lawsuit.
Data breach
In September 2020, Shopify confirmed a data breach in which customer data from fewer than 200 merchants was stolen. One of those merchants later said over 4,900 of their customers alone had had their information accessed. Shopify claims that the data stolen included names, addresses and order details, but not "complete payment card numbers or other sensitive personal or financial information." Shopify said that there was no evidence that the data had been misused, and identified two "rogue members" of its support team as having been responsible. They were fired, and the matter was forwarded to the FBI.

Tobias "Tobi" Lütke MSC is a German/Canadian entrepreneur who is the co-founder and CEO of Shopify, an e-commerce company based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Lütke was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1981. He received a Schneider CPC (German brand of the Amstrad Colour Personal Computer distributed by the Schneider Rundfunkwerke AG) from his parents at the age of six. By 11 or 12, he began rewriting the code of the games he played and modifying computer hardware as a hobby. Lütke dropped out of school and entered an apprenticeship program at the Koblenzer Carl-Benz-School to become a computer programmer after tenth grade. He moved from Germany to Canada in 2002.

News/Announcements: (Overdue) Shoutouts to Patreon Patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Art Initiative Philadelphia March was such a busy month for me that I somehow forgot my monthly shoutouts to my Patreon patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Art Initiative. My bad y’all. I’ll try to not let it happen again. So an overdue shoutout to all of ya’ll is below . . . 2023 was one of more embittering, infuriating and maddening years in recent memory for me. And it doesn’t help that with this line of work, it’s all too easy to battle and endure feelings of loneliness, despair and failure; to feel and believe that you’re an imposter. I’ve personally found it to be a brutal, unforgiving and wildly interesting life and career path that can’t — and will never — compare to most other jobs I’ve ever previously had. And I’ve had quite a few of them in my life!  The Joy of Violent Movement turns 14 in June. 14 years of doing anything is a very long time. It’s close to a quarter of my life. And for the blogosphere, that’s roughly somewhere between 10-139 lifetimes. Now, it hasn’t always been easy. There have been moments, where it felt impossible to manage this thing and to keep it going. To be frank, as the kids say “the math ain’t matching.” But for the most part, I can say this: I’ve felt and believed with every fiber of my being that I needed to be brave and bold, and go out on my own, because I didn’t believe that I’d really get a fair shot to do this work for anyone else.  I’ve said this for many years: I’ve long felt strong desire — and need — to create something similar to the wildly eclectic, dynamic and global sort of environment I grew up immersed in as a young Black boy in Corona, Queens. Unsurprisingly, whenever I remember I read my favorite music magazines and sites, I never saw the world I grew up in being covered or represented in any significant or meaningful way.  From my own experiences working in book publishing and as a music journalist, I’ve learn that as much as you can demand fairness, diversity and inclusion, it’s still ultimately up to the powers in control to see it, hear it, understand it, take it to heart and actually do something about it. So what do you do when those in power don’t get it — or don’t want to get it? Well, then it might be time to grit your teeth and try to do it your own damn self.  When I started this site back in 2020, I din’t — and just couldn’t have — imagine the majority of the things I’ve experienced, seen and covered throughout its history to have ever happened.  I’ve covered roughly 1,500 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia.  I’ve covered a dozen or more festivals, including traveling to Montreal for M for Montreal twice — in 2019 and 2022.  I’ve been a panelist at Mondo.NYC Festival, New Colossus Festival, and for a Music Managers Forum Canada Webinar speaking about PR, promotion and press for indie artists, giving my perspective as a indie blogger and journalist.  I made a cameo in a JOVM mainstay’s music video. It’s a very noticeable spot towards the end of the video.  I’ve photographed George Clinton, Patti LaBelle, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, Blondie, Nile Rodgers, Roky Erickson, Philip Bailey, Blind Boys of Alabama, Big Bird, Elmo and a growing list of legendary and beloved artists and personalities, as well as this site’s growing list of mainstays.  What will JOVM’s 14th year hold? Generally speaking my hope is always for bigger and better for the site for y’all as readers. Earlier this month, I announced on this site that I was selected to be in the inaugural cohort for Asian Arts Initiative’s (AAI) Sound Type Music Writers Workshop in Philadelphia. So some explanation: Sound Type is AAI’s music festival designed to support and uplift new, courage music from the Asian Diaspora and beyond. The Music Writers Workshop will provide journalists and critics a series of workshops, gat...

Northvolt Secures Record $5 Billion in Debt Financing for Expansion and Recycling Facility
Tumblr media
Europe’s Leading Battery Manufacturer Readies For Possible Stock Market Listing
In a significant development, Northvolt, the Swedish battery manufacturer, has solidified its status as Europe’s best-funded start-up by securing a groundbreaking $5 billion in debt financing. The funding, acknowledged as the largest green loan in Europe to date, is poised to fuel the expansion of the company’s inaugural gigafactory and the construction of a state-of-the-art recycling facility on the same site. This move highlights the insatiable demand for capital in the region’s burgeoning battery sector and positions Northvolt for potential stock market listing, pending improved market conditions.
Record-Breaking Financing
Northvolt’s recent announcement validates earlier reports from the Financial Times in March, indicating the company’s intent to raise $5 billion in debt. The funds were sourced from a consortium of 23 banks, alongside significant contributions from the European Investment Bank and the Nordic Investment Bank. This financing, which encompasses the refinancing of a $1.6 billion debt package from July 2020, brings the company’s total raised capital to over $13 billion, facilitating its ambitious plan to establish four major factories across Sweden, Germany, and Canada by the decade’s end.
Challenges and Milestones at Northvolt Ett
The financing will play a pivotal role in realizing the full potential of Northvolt Ett, the company’s inaugural gigafactory situated below the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. Although the company Ett commenced battery production in late 2021, it faced delays and setbacks, impacting overall production. Notably, the Swedish truckmaker Scania, among other customers, has been awaiting deliveries from Northvolt Ett, contributing to the company’s losses, which surged eight-fold to nearly SKr11 billion ($1.1 billion) for the first three quarters of 2023 compared to the previous year.
Focus on Sustainability and Circular Practices
Peter Carlsson, Northvolt’s CEO and co-founder, emphasized the financing as a milestone for the European energy transition. The funds will not only support the gigafactory but also finance the adjacent recycling plant, Revolt Ett. This marks the first instance of a company outside Asia placing a recycling facility next to battery manufacturing. According to Northvolt, recycled battery materials boast a 70% lower carbon footprint than mined minerals, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable and circular business practices.
Environmental Recognition and Future Challenges
Northvolt received a commendable “dark green” rating from Cicero, a Norwegian consultancy assessing the environmental quality of debt offerings. Emma Nehrenheim, Chief Environmental Officer at Northvolt, expressed pride in attracting top-tier financial partners, noting that global capital is increasingly keen on investing in electrification and climate change mitigation. Despite the challenges faced by the company, executives remain optimistic, anticipating that future gigafactories will necessitate their own multibillion-dollar financing packages.
Northvolt received advisory support from BNP Paribas, Allen & Overy, and Mannheimer Swartling, underscoring the strategic collaboration behind this monumental financing endeavor. As Northvolt navigates its expansion and sustainability initiatives, the battery manufacturer is positioned as a trailblazer in Europe’s transition towards greener energy solutions.

BILBO WAS RIGHT!
Tumblr media
Swept off to …indeed!
“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
Bilbo Baggins ~ The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Truer words were never spoken; most who travel know this …the others sit on the couch. When I began the Teacher in Transition in 2020, the intent was to share how to adopt a way of life leaving behind a teaching career of thirty years. Primary among the goals of a successful transition was the ability to travel widely. Covid made obtaining checks on the list a bit difficult; but we’ve managed to go hiking in Arizona, camping in the Llano Estacado, traveling to Chicago, returning to Ireland and Scotland …not bad for two years. A unplanned addendum to this strategy occurred in January of ‘22 when my wife became a TRAVELING nurse. We were gonna hit the road in a bold, new fashion.
Out of the last 93 weeks, we’ve been on the road 62 of those weeks. Not exactly Charles Kurault or Anthony Bourdain but pretty damn adventurous. We have just returned from thirteen weeks living in Columbia, Missouri. It was an incredibly bittersweet departure as we were thoroughly charmed by the area, the mountains, the sites, the people and the city. I could see myself being there much longer. There’s always the guy who says, “you’ve said that about everyplace you’ve gone!” YEAH …WELL … I guess they’re right. What does this mean? I had a friend presume that I sure must hate East Texas. No, not hate; but definitely burned out on it. We avoided past opportunities to move to other places due to our children and to stay close to the old folks. Our boys have grown and now we are the elders and time waits for no one. Little two week vacations can no longer hold back the urge to get out of this place! (a salute to Eric Burdon and The Animals) But as Bilbo warned us …we have no idea where we might be swept off to!
Yes, new developments have occurred. There is a joy to returning to Nacogdoches for the interim six weeks between travel gigs, but with each adventure it seems less satisfying. It feels almost as if we no more than return home and get unpacked then I’m ready to get back to traveling. My wife is a bit more settled, but I see the adjustment struggle in her as well. It’s a positive struggle, because we know in a few weeks, we will be in completely new environs! It’s a mindset I never thought would develop, but …here ‘tis. It’s as if there is not anything to hold us here. I have wonderful friends at out cigar lounge, but truth be told our fondest Nacogdoches bonds all seem to be in the past. Our families all live in the Houston area or DFW or San Antonio or in the Blue Ridge. The only family members left in East Texas are …well, Kim, my almost ninety year old aunt and me. My Quadrumvirate all live away and we have numerous new friends from all over that we’ve met from our adventures. I …we didn’t fully anticipate this; but we’re not scared of it.
Traveling the world was always a “someday” state of mind; it’s someday and the clock is ticking. We’ve seen many other sides to the fence and in many cases the grass IS greener with mountains, new vistas, amazing cities, exotic tastes, mesmerizing art, new cultures, unique conversations, charming small towns, inspiring histories, and open minded folks. It’s a real scene man. It’s in Tuscany, in Missouri, in Mexico, in Canada, in Louisiana, in Edinburgh, in Austin, in Kentucky and on and on. These places we’ve been and will be soon. I love Nacogdoches and it was a sublime place to raise a family; but chapters come to a close as will the entire book one day. We have to see more. One day, Kim and I will find a quiet place to live out our lives, but in the interim …let’s see what’s over the hill.

Are cannabis stores essential
Tumblr media
Mentalities encompassing the pot business have without a doubt developed in Canada. Following quite a while of forbiddance, this frequently disparaged plant has seemingly become standardised and indispensable to our cutting edge society. This has been made considerably more evident by different governments and common reactions towards pot organisations in the ongoing worldwide pandemic.
On Walk 23, 2020, the Ontario government reported the principal round of compulsory conclusion of all superfluous work environments for an underlying 14-day time frame, viable Walk 24, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. The request was made in accordance with s. 7.02(4) of the Crisis Board and Common Assurance Act, under Guideline 82/20 (the "Request"). The Request illustrated 74 classes of "fundamental" organisations, which included "pot stores and marijuana makers", that were allowed to stay open. Notwithstanding, confidential area marijuana stores were taken out from a refreshed rundown of fundamental working environments, powerful April 4, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. This refreshed Request will endure something like 14 days, with the chance of augmentation. At first, upon this update to the Request, just the public authority claimed the Ontario Pot Store was allowed to sell grown-up used weed in the area. Weed makers in the area - which can be caught under "horticulture and food creation" of Ontario's fundamental working environment list - may likewise stay open.
While private area marijuana stores have as of late been actually shut to assist with diminishing the gamble of labourers and clients spreading the Covid it ought to be noticed that they have not really been constrained bankrupt. On April 7, 2020 the Liquor and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) reported an impermanent measure presented by the Public authority of Ontario https://www.ontario.ca/regulations/guideline/200128 that permits AGCO-approved weed retail locations to remain in business by offering conveyance and curbside get administrations. These new measures are made conceivable as per a further update to the Request presented by the Public authority of Ontario and will keep going for 14 days, with the chance of an expansion in the event that the Request is expanded. This brief measure was seemingly in light of psychological wellness and fixation specialists voicing that it is "totally basic" to keep sanctioned marijuana items accessible.
In spite of at first being considered "fundamental", some pot firms have implied that hints of disgrace towards the business wait, as marijuana organisations confronting the desperate financial impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic have been barred from different legislative help measures.
For example, Commodity Improvement Canada ("EDC") and the Business Advancement Bank of Canada ("BDC") have declared different drives to help little and medium-sized organisations managing the financial effects of Coronavirus, including the Little and Medium-Sized Undertaking Advance and Assurance Program and the Business Credit Accessibility Program ("BCAP"). These projects give billions of dollars in direct loaning and different kinds of monetary help at market rates. Nonetheless, regardless of the Branch of Money site guaranteeing that "BCAP will uphold admittance to supporting Canadian organisations in all areas," it seems this help doesn't stretch out to battling organisations in Canada's marijuana industry.
Accordingly, a combination of north of 70 Canadian marijuana firms have communicated their interests in a letter to Back Pastor Bill Morneau and Industry Priest Navdeep Bains on Walk 19 mentioning the Public authority of Canada carry out prompt measures to give financial boost to the pot business. The organisations recognized two different ways the central government can uphold the business:
"Equivalent and fair access", including admittance to the pay sponsorships reported by the national government on Walk 18. The declaration was at first material just to private companies, nonetheless, it was brought up that a few firms utilise a more noteworthy number than would qualify under the meaning of a little business; and
"Equivalent and fair access" to subsidising through government organisations, including those presented by the BDC and EDC.
While weed organisations keep on battling for equivalent and fair admittance to BDC financing, another administrative drive might give genuinely necessary alleviation to battling pot makers. Canada's driving horticulture and food moneylender, Ranch Credit Canada ("FCC"), has reported that authorised weed makers confronting monetary difficulties from the Coronavirus pandemic are qualified to apply for present moment, government-supported credit and credit instalment deferrals to a limit of $500,000 to help with income needs. FCC has gotten an upgrade to its capital base and will consider an extra $5 billion in loaning ability to makers, agribusinesses and food processors. The new loaning is notwithstanding the office's current $38 billion portfolio.
As indicated by the FCC's Coronavirus Backing System subtleties, organisations applying for FCC loaning items are dependent upon typical loaning a reasonable level of effort, which thinks about business reasonability, financial record, and the executives respectability and experience. Be that as it may, those organisations should likewise be monetarily practical elements preceding the effect of Coronavirus to be qualified. While the workplace of FCC boss communicator Trevor Sutter has affirmed that authorised marijuana makers will qualify as ranchers under the boost, makers ought to be mindful that the monetary suitability necessity brings up issues about whether numerous Canadian pot makers will fit the bill for the program.
While the ongoing Canadian drives to help the weed business could apparently be improved, our American partners have delivered marijuana organisations no doubt ineligible for government Coronavirus calamity alleviation. Since marijuana stays unlawful at the government level, the pot business is being denied admittance to help valuable open doors, including programs regulated by the bureaucratic Private venture Organization (the "SBA"). The SBA as of late affirmed "except for organisations that produce or sell hemp and hemp-determined items (Horticulture Improvement Demonstration of 2018, Public Regulation 115-334), weed related organisations are not qualified for SBA-subsidised administrations (OMB, 2 C.F.R. § 200.300)."
As the principal G7 country to completely sanction weed cross country, Canada might be seen by some as a nonconformist that has embraced the many advantages the pot business brings to the table. In any case, numerous industry players are campaigning the bureaucratic and commonplace state run administrations to show weed organisations a similar help proposed to little and medium-sized organisations. These organisations bring up that most Canadian marijuana firms are new organisations in a "juvenile, convoluted area," and are needing government backing to climate the financial effects of Coronavirus. Subsequent to being considered as "fundamental" organisations in different regions and offering more than $8 billion to the Canadian Gross domestic product last year, some are addressing why the weed area is excluded from all monetary upgrade estimates that are being proposed to other Canadian organisations.
Moreover, the weed business has put forth attempts to help our nation in this trying time. Alberta Wellbeing Administrations has gotten many N95 respirators from Aurora Marijuana to help cutting edge medical care labourers. Covering Development and HEXO have given individual defensive gear and security veils to clinics. In New Brunswick, Organigram has given 500 litres of ethanol to be utilised in the development of hand sanitizer. What's more, with an end goal to meet the constantly expanding need for testing, Wellbeing Canada has additionally gone to the marijuana business to check whether pot research facilities have the ability to test for Coronavirus.
Canadian weed organisations accept they bring a great deal to the table for our country in this phenomenal time. For example, there are assets in the marijuana area that are possible being underutilised, for example, as of late constructed, enormous scope offices with pharma-level principles that may not presently be functional. Notwithstanding research centres being utilised for testing, such offices might actually be utilised as stopgap emergency clinics to oblige the dramatically expanding number of Coronavirus patients.
The marijuana business has made considerable progress in a brief timeframe and Canada keeps on driving the way. The meaning of being placed on the underlying "fundamental" organisations list, AGCO-approved pot retail locations being permitted to offer conveyance and curbside get administrations, and the way that some Pot makers in the territory caught under "farming and food creation" of Ontario's fundamental working environment rundown might keep on leftover open ought not be put into words. The difficulties lighted by Coronavirus might be seen as a chance to help and support this new area in our nation sufficiently.

Millions in US hunker down from frigid, deadly monster storm (AP) Millions of people hunkered down in a deep freeze overnight and early morning to ride out the frigid storm that has killed at least 18 people across the United States, trapping some residents inside homes with heaping snow drifts and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. The scope of the storm has been nearly unprecedented, stretching from the Great Lakes near Canada to the Rio Grande along the border with Mexico. About 60% of the U.S. population faced some sort of winter weather advisory or warning, and temperatures plummeted drastically below normal from east of the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachians, the National Weather Service said. More than 2,360 domestic and international flights were canceled Saturday, according to the tracking site FlightAware. Forecasters said a bomb cyclone—when atmospheric pressure drops very quickly in a strong storm—had developed near the Great Lakes, stirring up blizzard conditions, including heavy winds and snow.
As Applications Fall, Police Departments Lure Recruits With Bonuses and Attention (NYT) As American police departments seek to overcome an exodus of disgruntled officers and a sudden decline in applications, they are wooing recruits with some of the tactics a football coach might use to land a prized quarterback. In Fairfax County, Va., in the suburbs of Washington, future officers are being treated to a “signing day” ceremony where they formally accept their job offers. Out-of-state residents who want to join the police force in Louisville, Ky., are being flown in to take entrance tests, put up in a hotel and paired with an officer for a ride-along. On the West Coast, some agencies are offering bonuses worth tens of thousands of dollars to lure officers from other departments to transfer. The economics of law enforcement were long tilted in favor of police departments, which often had far more qualified applicants than they did job openings. No longer. A steep drop in the number of people wanting to become police officers since the start of the pandemic and the unrest of 2020 have given extraordinary leverage to job seekers, forcing departments to market themselves in new ways.
Days before new president, old divisions tearing at Brazil (AP) Trumpets and snares will play Brazil’s national anthem at Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s swearing-in on Jan. 1. Then, one will hear a different song on the streets, its lyrics taking a shot at outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro. “It is time for Jair, it is time for Jair ... to go away!” the lyrics say. “Pack your bags, hit the road and go away!” When Lula clinched his election win over Bolsonaro on Oct. 30, tens of thousands of people sang the familiar tune throughout the night, pushing the song to the top of Spotify’s list in Brazil and showing one way that many Brazilians aren’t ready to extend olive branches. Healing Brazil’s divided society will be easier said than done. Lula’s Cabinet appointments thus far favoring leftists and stalwarts of his Workers’ Party are turning off those who trusted the divisive 77-year-old to govern alongside moderates, and who joined forces after Bolsonaro repeatedly tested the guardrails of the world’s fourth-biggest democracy.
Air travellers warned of delays as UK passport control staff strike (Reuters) Passengers at British airports were warned of delays after passport control staff walked out on Friday on the first day of a strike due to last until New Year, though London’s Heathrow and Gatwick reported no major disruptions. The Public and Commercial Services Union said more than 1,000 Border Force staff, who are employed by the government, were expecting to strike. They are following nurses, paramedics, and workers in the rail and postal sectors in the biggest wave of industrial action over pay and conditions in Britain for decades.
In Ukraine, Christmas Lights Defy Darkness of War, and Children Ask for Peace (NYT) Hundreds of missiles and drones aimed at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have left millions of people without power—and dozens of cities without Christmas lights. So some Ukrainian cities decided to be inventive with their Christmas decorations—finding ways to win back the season while not wasting precious electricity or disappointing children as holiday lights blink out during the attacks. In the usually serene square of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, the capital, the authorities put up what they called the Christmas Tree of Invincibility. It was decorated with papier-mâché white doves and a strip of blue and yellow lights—the colors of the Ukrainian flag—powered by a diesel generator. This year, Christmas decorations are hardly visible in Ukrainian cities, but when they are displayed, they almost always have a patriotic touch. Blue and yellow ribbons are used to create flags, children’s letters to soldiers are put on display and Christmas bunnies now hold blue and yellow hearts. Valeriy Bozhenko, who is working as Santa Claus this season at Kyiv’s central railway station, said children most often ask him “for peace,” with toys usually coming in second.
As Russia bombs Ukraine’s infrastructure, its own services crumble (Washington Post) As Russia has launched relentless strikes on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, leaving millions without electricity, water and heat, towns across Russia have been beset by their own, utility-related disasters. A huge gas pipeline explosion outside St. Petersburg last month, major fires in two separate Moscow shopping malls allegedly caused by dodgy welding, and faulty power grids that have left tens of thousands without heat and electricity are just some of the incidents reported since Russia’s efforts to obliterate Ukraine’s infrastructure that began in October. In late October, two sewer pipes burst in the southern city of Volgograd, flooding several streets with feces and waste water, and leaving 200,000 of the 1 million residents without water or heating for several days. A few weeks later, a similar, though less drastic sewage problem in the town of Pervouralsk, a small city west of Yekaterinburg, provoked residents to drag buckets of fecal water to the offices of the local water council in protest, claiming authorities had neglected the problem for years. While disasters now raise suspicions of sabotage linked to the war in Ukraine, poorly maintained infrastructure is a long-standing and persistent problem in Russia—the result of old Soviet-era systems in need of repair and costly maintenance, decades of endemic corruption, and the government’s prioritization of defense and security budgets, as well as the development of major cities over regional towns.
Putin says Russia ready to negotiate over Ukraine (Reuters) President Vladimir Putin said Russia was ready to negotiate with all parties involved in the war in Ukraine but that Kyiv and its Western backers had refused to engage in talks. Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine has triggered the most deadly conflict in Europe since World War Two and the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. There is, thus far, little end in sight to the war. The Kremlin says it will fight until all its aims are achieved while Kyiv says it will not rest until every Russian soldier is ejected from all of its territory, including Crimea which Russia annexed in 2014.
Taliban Bar Women From NGOs, Threatening to Worsen Crisis (NYT) The Afghan government on Saturday barred women from working in local and international humanitarian organizations, officials said, a move that threatens billions of dollars of aid that has kept Afghanistan from the brink of starvation amid an economic collapse. The ban is the latest blow to women’s rights under a Taliban administration that appears to value eradicating women from public life over keeping the country from plunging further into a dire humanitarian catastrophe that risks the lives of millions of Afghans. The edict, announced in a letter from the Ministry of Economy and confirmed to The New York Times by the ministry’s spokesman, warned that the ministry would revoke the operating licenses of any organizations that did not comply. It was unclear whether the ban would apply to the United Nations’ aid agencies, and to all women or only Afghan nationals working in aid organizations.
Pope's lament: Icy winds of war buffet humanity at Christmas (AP) Pope Francis used his Christmas message Sunday to lament the "icy winds of war” buffeting humanity and to make an impassioned plea for an immediate end to the fighting in Ukraine, a 10-month-old conflict he decried as “senseless.” Francis also cited long-running conflicts in the Middle East, including in the Holy Land, “where in recent months violence and confrontations have increased, bringing death and injury in their wake.” In addition, he prayed for a lasting truce in Yemen and for reconciliation in Iran and Myanmar, and cited violence and conflicts in Africa's Sahel region. He lamented that on Christmas, the “path of peace” is blocked by social forces that include “attachment to power and money, pride, hypocrisy, falsehood.” “Indeed, we must acknowledge with sorrow that, even as the Prince of Peace is given to us, the icy winds of war continue to buffet humanity," Francis said. “If we want it to be Christmas, the birth of Jesus and of peace, let us look to Bethlehem and contemplate the face of the child who is born for us,'' he said. ”And in that small and innocent face, let us see the faces of all those children who, everywhere in the world, long for peace."
China angered, Taiwan cheered by new U.S. defence act (Reuters) China expressed anger on Saturday at a new U.S. defence authorisation law that boosts military assistance for Taiwan, while Taipei cheered it for helping boost the island’s security. China, which considers democratically governed Taiwan its own territory, expressed “strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition” regarding the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement. It said the $858 billion military spending measure, which authorises up to $10 billion in security assistance and fast-tracked weapons procurement for Taiwan, contained provisions that “cause serious damage to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait”. China has never renounced using force to bring Taiwan under its control. Taiwan strongly disputes China’s sovereignty claims, saying only the island’s 23 million people can decide their future.

Exclusive: Tessa Virtue shares the sweet story about her BonLook glasses and her advice for Canada's Olympians
November 1, 2021
Tessa Virtue is busy! The three-time Olympic ice dancing champion and three-time world champion has a number of exciting projects on the go. She has an amazing and stylish new collaboration with BonLook and a new job, and she still made time to watch the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and cheer on Canada's incredible team this past July.
HELLO! Canada had a chance to speak with the sports legend to find out more behind-the-scenes insight about the Bon Look collaboration, her new job and her advice for our Olympic taking care of your mental health
HELLO! Canada: Do you have a standout moment from watching the Olympics this year? Tessa: Well, London, Ont. was so well represented so that made it particularly fun. Whether that was Jessie Flemmings, Damian Warner, Maggie [Mac Neil] the swimmer – that was so exciting – so there were some personal ties there as well.
[And] athletes that worked with B2ten, the organization that helps facilitate a lot of our off-site training needs. For example, Damian – we share a mental performance coach. So I would pay particular attention to his preparation, and the way he executed with such conviction. It’s hard to look past that moment.
But I would also have fan moments as well. There was a swimmer from Ecuador, who won one of the country’s first medals. Watching the long distance cycling, and that final sprint across the finish line, with Michael Woods in fifth, I was jumping up and down, and cheering for them – even for athletes from all over. You just wanted everyone to have the performance that they would be satisfied with, especially given everything that led up to that moment.
Long story short, there are so, so many moments, but Canada certainly has a lot to be proud of. It was so fun to see our nation so well represented.
Definitely. Do you have any advice to athletes and medal winners on how to process all of it or consider what's next for them? I think, continue to communicate with your team. Sometimes, when the moment has passed and you either have achieved the result you were hoping for, or didn’t, sometimes we forget that it still is a process of debriefing, and sharing feelings and coming to terms with the moment that was so significant in your life.
And I think the other is to just really stand firm with your values. Know what you believe in and never compromise that, no matter how many different directions you may be pulled in.
That is such beautiful advice. Is that also something you try to apply to your own life as well in terms of work and schooling? I try to. We all feel better when we are acting in accordance to our own value systems, and I think it’s such a strong pillar to rely on. No matter the storm around us, I think we can find calm amidst that.
Can you tell us the backstory of your collaboration with BonLook? When I started collaborating with BonLook, I lived right around the corner from their offices. And it was actually on my way to the rink that I would stop in really often where we could play around with all of the different textures and colours and acetates, and I was really so immersed in the process.
One of my favourite things about the company – and it’s a long list of things that I admire – is just how open and collaborative they are. I used to joke that I could have done anything with the glasses and they would have totally supported it because they said, 'As long as you love it and believe in it, that's what matters.' And as a collaborator, that is sort of a dream.
So, I think particularly in the last while, where they haven't been as many opportunities to express ourselves with fashion, I was so excited about the idea of joining forces once again and I really wanted to take a frame that could be versatile and complementary to many different moods, feelings and styles, and also have a hint of… I'm trying to find the right word… an edge. A fashion twist, an element. There's something about the frame that elevates the eyewear, I think, anyways. That was sort of the goal.
Whether we're behind computer screens or out wearing masks, it really is a fun way to continue to explore these different looks and styles.
Do you have a favourite colour or favourite frame that you've been wearing? The Fog, a ton. The sunglasses never leave my head. [Laughs] I think the best part is mixing it up depending on my mood and what I’m wearing.
It's changing now, especially thanks to collaborations like this, whereas before people sometimes didn't see that glasses could be an extension of their style and personality.
I completely agree, and I'll credit BonLook for helping to really change that narrative, and making it accessible to all and presenting it in a way that is fresh, forward and innovative. It certainly changed the way I incorporate eyewear into my life.
Did working on the collaboration help you get a clearer sense of yourself and your look? I always appreciate classic, timeless pieces that are fairly refined and elegant, and I love mixing that with things that are more personality-driven, or might be more colourful or out there, as far as maybe risky, and I think more than ever – and I hope that other people are too – it's the right time and right way to lean into the fun side of fashion. I think we're all ready for that.
For sure! How has this period and the pandemic influenced your style? Will you embrace the "go big now" motto with your style? Yes, I think I will take more risks because you know, those pieces that you save in your closet for just the right occasion or that pair of heels that you don’t want to ruin by walking on cobblestone or anything? I think I will be more apt to wear the good things and just enjoy those small moments.
If there's anything that we've learned in the last while, it's that those seemingly simple things add so much joy and happiness to our lives. Like everyone else, I have been known to live in sweats during this time, but I try to pull myself together for work. So, I will get up in the morning, put a full outfit on, including shoes, and just feel like I can embody a professional.
When the time comes, and it is safe to be out a little more, I'm ready to put on a fun dress and take more risks and be courageous with my fashion, because I think we can all just just be… we can lean into the frivolity of it all when there is so much heaviness out there in the world in just those small little ways that might overall contribute to our wellbeing.
Just seeing some of the fun colours of your outfits on your Instagram feed can boost viewers' moods and hopefully has the same effect on you as the wearer. There's a confidence that comes when firstly you’re expressing yourself in a way that feels really authentic and you feel good about an outfit you've put together or accessorizing in a certain way, I think that we can carry ourselves differently and I think that's such a gift, but thank you for the compliment.
You mentioned your mom and grandmother while speaking about the collaboration. Do you think you've picked up these things from them, and this more holistic approach to fashion? One hundred percent. Naming these [frames] after my grandmother, Eleanor, was so important to me, obviously. She was so much a part of my upbringing. She's the reason – both she and my mom – are the reason why I feel limitless. I always felt like I could chase any kind of dream, no matter the scale or magnitude of it.
And I would say that she was a practical woman. She was a teacher and she made everyone around her just feel their best. It was so cool. She has such a lasting legacy and had so much lasting impact on so many people.
This kind of epitomizes my grandmother: She was so practical, and yet for her funeral, she wanted my mom, sister and I to wear red dresses. She wanted people to celebrate, and even that was through fashion.
And I think she would just encourage us to be unabashedly ourselves, whatever individual you are.
That is such a beautiful story and it captures a character. Speaking of work, do you currently have an internship that you can talk about? It's not so much of an internship but actually a real job. It is with Deloitte and it has been so interesting. Like everyone else, I have been craving human interaction so I can better understand the nuances of the culture. But, I have been able to practically live out and experience many of the things that I have been learning about theoretically in school, which has been a really beautiful parallel. I'm just trying to be a sponge and soak it all up.
Are you able to go in person yet or is it still virtual? I just heard that my office pass is available so I don't know what that will look like, or if anyone else will be there [laughs], but I can't wait to march through those office doors and find my purpose in that realm.
That's so exciting! Do you plan to have any schooling in-person this year or is it still up in the air? It's still up in the air. The intent is to work with a sister school in Barcelona in October, but obviously the schools haven’t been able to finalize whether travel is in the cards or not.
Hopefully it will happen. Hopefully. It would just be so brilliant to get the cohort together. Thank goodness for technology because we really have been able to connect and make deep, meaningful bonds and also I think we’ve been really able to optimize our productivity, just leveraging the different devices and tools. But, nothing beats the humanizing element of working together on a common goal.
My partnership and teamwork in figure skating was just the antithesis of what I'm experiencing now, so I'm trying to just embrace everything as a positive, like everyone is. But I do look forward to actually getting together with my classmates.
Do you have any advice for people going back to school or have gone back or those embarking on post-secondary education and beyond for the first time? I think it's important to respect where you are in your process. Sometimes the inclination to prove our worth or merit is so strong that we forget to just take a step back and be students. And to that point, I think there are just so many people who are eager and willing to support you along the way, whether that’s staff, teachers, mentors, fellow students. I would say leverage that network.
On a more practical note, what would you say are the tools that have connected you to people the most, whether it’s through schooling or in a personal capacity? Good question. In school, we make sure to do two-minute check-ins with every team member at the beginning of every meeting. The challenge is to fill that two minutes whether you think you can or can't
I think we've also stopped apologizing for whether pets run through or bark in the middle of a meeting, or colleagues have kids. There are just those human home life distractions that I think we've all embraced and talking about humanity, and maybe that adds that component to that person behind the screen, and maybe just re-framing that as context that you wouldn't otherwise be able to get and that can be really magical.
That is such an important point about re-framing it and it becoming a bonding experience. Then on the opposite end to combat that, to dive into the deep focus work and create some type of environment at home where there are more limited distractions and we feel that we are best equipped to be present in the workflow.
The sense that I was receiving at the start of all this was that it was really convenient to toss in a load of laundry in the middle of the workday, or you know, unpack groceries while you're in the middle of a meeting, but I think the pendulum also has to swing back to putting boundaries up around our work time just to ensure we’re getting the most out of our workdays...
It bleeds the other way, too, into your home life and off-hours. I know that I'm not saying anything revelatory, but I think the more we can protect that, the more we can protect our wellbeing...
We almost need a person [to say it out loud]. We all keep saying, "Everyone is burnt out, everyone is burnt out," but then it's becoming normalized. What kind of tools and strategies are we implanting to protect our mental health?
What are you looking forward to most, this year or going into 2022? Can we expect another BonLook collaboration? I hope so. That would be a dream.
I'm looking forward to hopefully more family time, I'm looking forward to graduating in May and I'm looking forward to continuing to challenge myself in ways that feel uncomfortable, challenging and scary.
That has sort of been a mantra or motto in the last few years, but I feel that is where the growth is happening and I want to continue to lean into that and put myself in situations where I can just learn and explore and find my way.

Ultimate Ways To Make Real Sustainable Money Online.
Tumblr media
Countless people dream of working remotely and making a living in the comfort of their homes. This is a reality that is achievable and accessible to anyone with the right tools, information, and the right mindset. With the Covid pandemic looming around and frequent lockdowns, working online can open doors to a successful career or a lucrative side hustle. The list below divides these online opportunities into four categories.- Career: These are proper jobs that require you to prepare a resume and cover letter. Just like any company, there is potential to grow, relocate, and have a fixed salary. - Top Tier: This includes jobs that have unlimited tapped potential. You can make as much money as you want and reach the level of success that you desire. It all boils down to your work ethic. - Mid Tier: These are jobs that require you to register with a platform or are extremely oversaturated and they might not have the same level of earning potential as Top tier jobs. - Low tier: These are low-paying jobs that can be easily considered side hustles. I wouldn't advise you to make a career or quit your job for low-tier jobs in this article. Please note: I absolutely hate Survey paying websites and any type of job that wastes precious time. Any job that pays unrealistic wages will not be included in this article. (There are too many websites that pay pennies or scam people.)
Become a Shopify Employee (Level-Career)
Tumblr media
Shopify has grown to be one of the biggest players in the E-Commerce space. The company is featured as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers. It currently employs over 7000+ employees who mostly work remotely. In May 2020, Shopify transitioned to operating online permanently with all its employees.Shopify is one of the best tech companies to work for. Salaries range from $46,000-$210,000 depending on the position. Their lowest position, Customer Service pays around $46,000 which is way above the national average for a similar role. You'll also receive benefits such as $5000 to put towards your wellness/health account, retirement account, or charitable giving account. Other benefits include maternity and parental leave top-up payments; mental health practitioners benefit up to $2,500; stock options, and many more. This is a real job presenting the opportunity to make a career with a company that cares about its employees. And yes, they hire internationals too. Click the link below to check out their Job postings.
Start a blog (Level - Top tier)
Tumblr media
Starting a blog is one of the best ways to make money online. There is no barrier to entry and the potential to make money is practically unlimited. Currently, the world has over 7.6 billion people and 65.6% of them have access to the internet. If you think blogging is a dead-end then you're in for a surprise. Like any other job, to be successful with blogging requires time and dedication. An updated article will be linked here to guide you on how to start a successful blog. In the meantime, these are ways you can monetize your blog.- Ads. You can run Google Ads or any other ads platform to showcase ads on your website. When people visit your website, view or click ads, revenue is generated. - Affiliate Marketing. Is a form of marketing that involves promoting a product and earning a commission when a sale is made. For example, you can join the Amazon Affiliate program, pick a product of interest and write an article about it. Amazon will provide you with a link that you can add to your blog. If a visitor clicks that link and makes a purchase, Amazon will pay you a commission. It's important to have useful good quality content to drive traffic to your website. - Sponsorship. A great way of boosting income on your website is to work with sponsors. A sponsored blog post is when a blogger gets paid to talk about a product or brand on their blog. The amount of money you get from sponsors will be determined by traffic and other factors. - Sell a product or service. You can sell e-books, online courses, merchandise, paid subscription service, or start a podcast.

Game development with Buildbox (Level-Mid Tier)
Tumblr media
If you have a passion for making mobile games and you're lacking in the programming department, Buildbox allows you to make games in a drag and drop user interface. No coding knowledge is required to build amazing games that can take the internet by storm. Some of the best ranking games on Android and iOS were made with Buildbox. The platform is also extremely easy to use, even for beginners. Money can be made by selling games or monetizing with ads in the Appstore. Although game developers can easily make 6 to 7 figures a year, I classified this gig as "Mid-tier" because of oversaturation within the mobile gaming industry. To be successful, you'll need a good idea, a well-designed game with different levels, and SEO marketing skills(Note: There is alternative software like Unity, Unreal, Gamemaker, and many more that can be used to make mobile games.)
Amazon Mturk (Level-Low Tier)
Tumblr media
Amazon Mechanical Turk is a crowdsourcing website for businesses and individuals to hire remotely located "crowd workers" to perform on-demand tasks. The amount you earn is proportional to how fast you can complete a task. Mturk is a great platform for making extra cash. I easily make $25-40 USD a day in my spare time.As a new Turker, you might not qualify for high-paying HITs. However, the more HITs you complete, the more work you'll qualify for. In addition, installing plugins and scripts such as Mturk Suite, Pandacrazy and others will massively boost your income. It's a must-have feature.Overall, Mturk doesn't offer the level of growth and the potential to earn is not up to par with other jobs on this list. Regardless, you can earn some extra cash.
Youtube (Level-Top Tier)
Tumblr media
Youtube is one of those jobs that seem bizarre and unattainable. Similar to blogging, Youtube requires a lot of hard work, consistency, and dedication. However, the potential to earn is limitless.A lot of people fail with Youtube because they don't respect it as a job. Other people overcomplicate it and they fail to start. If you love creating content and you have a niche of interest, use your phone and just start. You can monetize your Youtube channel with ads, sponsored content, and affiliate marketing. Additionally, you can recycle articles if you have a blog and turn them into youtube videos. It's like feeding two birds with one scone.
Appen "Search Engine Evaluator" (Mid-tier)
Tumblr media
Apply as a search engine evaluator at Appen. The job pays around $13/hr. A Search Engine Evaluator analyzes search results to ensure they are accurate and relevant. The job is fairly straightforward. (Note: Positions for this job might be full, so try to check out for any other open positions.)
Lionsbridge "Social Media Evaluator" (Level - Mid Tier)
Similar to Appen, Lionsbridge is a company that provides translations and localization solutions. A Social Media Evaluator's job is to ensure that a social network's newsfeed is relevant and accurate based on a given assignment. Wages range from $12-$15/hr. Lionsbridge also has other job openings that might be of interest.
Open an online business (Level-Top tier)
Tumblr media
Many advantages come with running an online business. Depending on the nature of the business, there is more control, and operating costs will be lower than a conventional brick-and-mortar business. Check out these cool ideas on how to open an online business.
Dropshipping
Tumblr media
Is a clever way of selling products that you don't own at a higher price. You won't have to store inventory or any products in physical form because when a customer buys from your store, their payment will automatically buy the product from a third-party store. Entrepreneurs usually pick and add products from Alibaba.com or any wholesaler of choice to their website. The next step is to set a reasonable price and drive traffic to your site. When a customer eventually buys a product from you, they're technically buying it from Alibaba or any wholesaler that you're working with.Countless people have made fortunes with this method, however, the market is extremely saturated now. Shipping costs, quality control, and low-profit margins are also factors to consider when launching a dropshipping website. The most important thing is to research a product that is in high demand but has low competition. That is the formula for dropshipping.
E-commerce website
Tumblr media
Start an e-commerce business and sell practically anything. From clothes to furniture, anything can be sold online. You can also sell digital products such as software, music beats, or even services. There are many tools out there that you can use such as Shopify, WordPress Woocommerce, Squarespace, and many more.Choosing a niche is the most important step when building an E-commerce site. Your website will look professional and tailored to specific products. You don't want your website to compete with the likes of Amazon and eBay. Customers will rather use those instead. Specialize in something!
Affiliate marketing
Tumblr media
Although this form of business is already mentioned, it deserves a segment of its own. Affiliate Marketing is the process by which an affiliate earns commission when they market a company's product. There are many affiliate networks that you can join with the most famous being Amazon Affiliates. Bluehost also has a great affiliate program that pays $65USD per sale. Shopify's affiliate program pays $58-$2000 per sale and Fiver pays up to $150 per new customer. This is just the tip of the iceberg as there are many affiliate programs that you can join. (Note: You don't need to have a website or a Youtube channel to drive traffic to your links, however, I would advise against that)
Amazon Arbitrage
Also known as retail arbitrage, is a method of buying items from different retailers and selling them on Amazon at a higher price. You can also buy items from Amazon and list them on eBay at a higher price. This Business method requires research and a good understanding of the product demand.
Start an agency.
Tumblr media
- You can start a social media marketing agency where you help clients grow their businesses and reach more people.  - If you know how to build websites or mobile apps, you can easily start an agency that provides those services to other businesses. - A travel agency can also be lucrative, especially if you know how to use social media effectively.
Fiverr
Is one of the best freelance marketplaces. The potential to earn is limitless. If you have any skills that can offer a service, customers will connect with you directly and pay you accordingly. Fiver also has a robust user interface that is easy to navigate and understand. It's definitely a great way to utilize your skills.
