btw if ur regularly going to concerts you need to be wearing ear protection. that ringing you get in your ears after a loud concert? that's the sound of ur hearing being damaged, and you will end up with tinnitus if not fully deaf if you keep damaging ur ears like that

at the very bare minimum you should use some of those cheap foam dollar store earplugs, but if you're going to concerts regularly (and/or you don't like the way the music sounds with those kinds of earplugs) you can invest in some silicone earplugs that come with a filter, which preserves the sound quality while keeping the volume from destroying your ears. something like those produced by earpeace or eargasm

do not destroy your hearing. tinnitus can and will happen to you

I know GoT only by reputation, and what little I've seen of it on tumblr, but... sometimes, I feel like fantasy, as a genre, has been absolutely ruined by the success of GoT. Everything these days seems to be about making settings and characters as nasty, brutish, and dirty as possible. It's incredibly tiring, and really frustrating, to the point of feeling like these sorts of tropes are being repeated for their own sake rather than because they actually do anything for the story or characters.

(Also, being the sort of person who easily becomes queasy at the sight or thought of blood, and has issues with everything being so darned loud, this tends to be a particular pet peeve in television, but even books aren't completely immune to this effect either, which makes it doubly frustrating.)

I mean this in the nicest possible way, please imagine me saying this with a big smile on my face and laughing as I take a swig from my beer, but you and I are SO diametrically opposed on this!

I mean, anything can be written BADLY, of course, but I fell out of reading fantasy as i got older not because it all became A Song of Ice and Fire but because it all seemed to be "a brave young woman!! IS the chosen one!! And she will prevail over SUPER DARKNESS. And only the parental figure will die, to motivate her, and everyone's intentions and clear and good, and also there are dragons I guess." There's so much narrative safety. There's so many last-minute asspulls to save someone. I would LOVE some well written political machination but there are dragons though. That's why I liked Locke Lamora!

I think we have a tendency to notice the things we hate. So for me, Fantasty now is fucking lousy with ~queer retellings~ that are all very life affirming and nice and all that but all the eating each other out in the world isn't going to get me over the hump of wishing there were actual, painful consequences for being an idiot, or even just unlucky.

Part of why people named Doc, who are me, really like Song of ice and Fire (please note I actually DON'T like Game of Thrones) is that anyone COULD die. The books would not CHEAT TO HELP THE GOOD GUY WIN. And for me, that was everything. As a young teen who had read so so so much fantasy but was starting to feel really resentful of the way it never seemed to mirror the moments of difficulty and pain in life, it meant so much (I think the show edged too hard toward Cheating To Help The bad Guy Win, but that's another matter)

But obviously you and I are totally different people. You admit to being squeamish, so of course you don't care for things that involve violence. I, on the other hand, am an excellent person to have in any given bloody crisis, as I have Done Time in Ag. I am, to give a real life example, the person you calmly call into the kitchen to help when you've nearly taken your finger off with a meat slicer. I have a smile and a "We can handle this!" to give. I, on the third hand, have had life experiences that make, "the magical salvation of being nice and believing really hard" feel like an actual-ass insult. I never met a war that didn't take its chunk, and you don't get to pick where they come from.

These are just differences of personality. Fucking magical princess witches in the forest running from the bad guys but overcoming it all with sass and gay love because we're twelve I guess exists for you, and grimdark machinations toward a lead crown of thorns where evil brings profit and virtue none at all because fuck happiness everyone should be a German concrete salesman is for me. I think there's probably more of what both of us like than either of us are actually admitting.

However, everything is too loud for me all the time also, I really recommend eargasm earplugs, which come with a very small container and are nearly invisible and discreet when in. They block some of the sound but not all of it. Many people in my life casually don't even know I have them or sometimes put them in for louder places.

hi gina! i saw that you said that you don’t like concerts very much bc it can be overwhelming!! if the crowd and screaming fans is what overwhelms you, i suggest trying earplugs if you haven’t already! i suggest either loop earplugs or eargasm ear plugs! they make the music sound so much better, they block out the screaming, and they help protect your ears! i personally got the eargasm earplugs for my louis shows in july! i’m going to a bunch and i don’t want to damage my hearing bc it’s going to be loud!!

I actually have some great earplugs, and yes! They absolutely help. Now if I could just eliminate all the other people in attendance, as well as the traffic, I’d be thrilled. 😆😆😆

Concert Earplugs

Concert Earplugs I'm currently using Eargasm earplugs and they work well for me, but I encounter an issue with them slipping out of my ears when I start sweating. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution that works? I'm curious to know if there are other options that might provide a better experience. News/Announcements: (Overdue) Shoutouts to Patreon Patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Art Initiative Philadelphia March was such a busy month for me that I somehow forgot my monthly shoutouts to my Patreon patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Art Initiative. My bad y’all. I’ll try to not let it happen again. So an overdue shoutout to all of ya’ll is below . . . 2023 was one of more embittering, infuriating and maddening years in recent memory for me. And it doesn’t help that with this line of work, it’s all too easy to battle and endure feelings of loneliness, despair and failure; to feel and believe that you’re an imposter. I’ve personally found it to be a brutal, unforgiving and wildly interesting life and career path that can’t — and will never — compare to most other jobs I’ve ever previously had. And I’ve had quite a few of them in my life!  The Joy of Violent Movement turns 14 in June. 14 years of doing anything is a very long time. It’s close to a quarter of my life. And for the blogosphere, that’s roughly somewhere between 10-139 lifetimes. Now, it hasn’t always been easy. There have been moments, where it felt impossible to manage this thing and to keep it going. To be frank, as the kids say “the math ain’t matching.” But for the most part, I can say this: I’ve felt and believed with every fiber of my being that I needed to be brave and bold, and go out on my own, because I didn’t believe that I’d really get a fair shot to do this work for anyone else.  I’ve said this for many years: I’ve long felt strong desire — and need — to create something similar to the wildly eclectic, dynamic and global sort of environment I grew up immersed in as a young Black boy in Corona, Queens. Unsurprisingly, whenever I remember I read my favorite music magazines and sites, I never saw the world I grew up in being covered or represented in any significant or meaningful way.  From my own experiences working in book publishing and as a music journalist, I’ve learn that as much as you can demand fairness, diversity and inclusion, it’s still ultimately up to the powers in control to see it, hear it, understand it, take it to heart and actually do something about it. So what do you do when those in power don’t get it — or don’t want to get it? Well, then it might be time to grit your teeth and try to do it your own damn self.  When I started this site back in 2020, I din’t — and just couldn’t have — imagine the majority of the things I’ve experienced, seen and covered throughout its history to have ever happened.  I’ve covered roughly 1,500 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia.  I’ve covered a dozen or more festivals, including traveling to Montreal for M for Montreal twice — in 2019 and 2022.  I’ve been a panelist at Mondo.NYC Festival, New Colossus Festival, and for a Music Managers Forum Canada Webinar speaking about PR, promotion and press for indie artists, giving my perspective as a indie blogger and journalist.  I made a cameo in a JOVM mainstay’s music video. It’s a very noticeable spot towards the end of the video.  I’ve photographed George Clinton, Patti LaBelle, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, Blondie, Nile Rodgers, Roky Erickson, Philip Bailey, Blind Boys of Alabama, Big Bird, Elmo and a growing list of legendary and beloved artists and personalities, as well as this site’s growing list of mainstays.  What will JOVM’s 14th year hold? got any recommendations re: ear protection/earplugs? specifically for loud (metal) concerts?

i use eargasm for when im in the crowd and when i’m on stage playing!! they’re pricy, but they do a really great job of cutting down the volume without muffling/distorting anything. i’ve tried a couple cheaper alternatives, but unfortunately i haven’t found anything that works quite as well.

if you don’t have a reusable pair, the foam ones work fine!! they’re not great, but its better than your ears ringing for the rest of the night. i definitely recommend investing in a reusable pair if you’re going to shows regularly!!

what was the first concert you ever attended?

My parents have been taking me to shows pretty much my whole life so I'm not 100% sure, but I'm almost positive that it was Michael Franti. Still go to his shows to this day and they're so much fun!

do you wear any sort of earplugs to shows?

My friend gifted me some eargasm earplugs last christmas and those things are so good! Especially for metal shows.

I used to not bother but I'm glad I have some good ones now. My dad spent his whole life going to shows and now his hearing is really bad, so I want to take better care of my own ears.

are you a phone in hand recording/taking pics so you can watch later concert goer or a phone in pocket living in the moment type?

A couple years ago it would have definitely been the first one. I've really cut back on that over the years and now I typically will take maybe one video and a couple pictures at the most, with the exception of some bands where I just can't help myself.

I don't do it for social media. My advice is to never do that shit for social media. I do it for my friends who may not get the chance to see said bands, so that I can share that experience with them. I have albums for every show I've been to since 2017 and I will keep my videos with me forever. They aren't just a thing for an instagram story that will be gone by the next day. They are my memories.

However, I always want to prioritize living in the moment because you can never get those moments back.

(I could also get into how I have had memory issues my whole life and that I like having things to help me remember those moments, but I will spare you that rant)

My two irl best friends! I've known them since my freshman year of high school and we've gone to sooo many shows together. I love them a lot. 🥺💕

What are those earplugs you really like? 😅

They are eargasm earplugs! I am in no way compensated for t;alking up these earplugs but I really should be (I can always use a spare pair, eargasm)

I have two pairs of them. They are small, they have a case that is easy to keep in a pocket but also has a key ring, so it can attach to a purse or anything.

They don't block sound in the same way other earplugs do, as they aren't meant to eliminate sound completely, but to make it softer. I LOVE them, they're made for concerts but I find they are great for pretty much anything. I can understand someone talking to me no problem but everything is just a notch quieter. But because they don't distort sound, they're great for going to dances or movies.

They come in two sizes, which is so nice because my ears are TINY and I need the smaller ears edition most definitely. They fit really nice, and are easy to take in and out and clean!

One of my favorite things about them is they are very discreet, especially if you're good at slipping them in and buy the transparent ones. I know it is currently in the fashion to wave a banner about every way one might be considered a Special Boy, but people named Doc who are me absolutely do not like to draw attention nor have attention drawn to the ways I modify my life to more easily move in the universe. If you're like me, these make that so so easy. Sometimes shit is loud, but you don't want to be the fucking square being all "oooohhhh :(:(:( so noisy" so you just put these in to cope with something amazing like "an action movie" and no one notices. It's fine. Ideal, even.

I don't play the game of whether something is cheap or expensive when I make recommendations anymore because A) I don't know your budget and B) my recommendations are almost never "this is the cheapest product you can find" But I absolutely think these are worth the price.
