How Can Anti-Snap Lock Improve Your Home Security?
Lock snapping is a standard method that burglars use to intrude into your house. The intruders break the snapping of the cylinder in a lock, consequently gaining access to the inner mechanism of your door and making an immediate or forced entry into your private property.
Since many homeowners in the UK have started using euro locks, the lock snapping has significantly grown.
The cylinder inside the lock is the most vulnerable part. Therefore, if a burglar successfully breaks or tempers it, the multi-point lock becomes useless. The problem is that even an inexperienced intruder can do it without much skill.
So, installing an anti-snap lock is ideal to prevent such forced entry. When looking for guidance from an expert locksmith, you can search in the UK locksmith service business directory.
Can you protect your home against lock snapping?
Protecting your home from lock snapping is possible when you figure out the locks are vulnerable. Thus, the best way to make your home more secure is to fit the right anti-snap lock.
Anti-snap locks are designed with a different locking mechanism which cannot be exposed easily. So, the intruder cannot stealthily break into private premises.
When you need help deciding which anti-snapping lock can fit into your door, you can book locksmith service in the UK.
Best anti-snap locks available across the UK
Here's a guide that you may consider when buying anti-snap locks.
British standard
A 'British standard' kitemark anti-snap lock can meet the safety standards of manufacturing set by the British Standard Institute (BSI). Hence, it is pervasive that most insurance companies across the UK will check whether you have only installed British standard locks to comply with the safety guidelines.
When installing an anti-snap lock, the British standard is TS007:2012. So, you must check the standards to protect your home from various attacks, such as bumping, picking, drilling and lock snapping.
Though TS007 is a premium quality lock, you must look into the three levels of security. However, the British standard rating ranges between 1 star to 3 stars. But it will help if you consider buying a three-star rated anti-snap lock for your door.
Sold secure diamond standard
When choosing an anti-snap lock, another trustworthy sign is 'sold secure', which guarantees the protectiveness of your door and ensures the lock has been tested by 'sold secure', a testing certification house.
In 2010, the SS312 Diamond standard anti-snap lock was introduced in the UK. Since then, the trial run has been taking place to make the locks more sturdy; so that these locks can withstand more vulnerable attacks.
Yale anti-snapping locks
Have you heard about the Yale anti-snap lock? This 3-star cylinder lock is designed with a multi-layered defense solution to prevent criminals from trespassing on your property.
Homeowners across the UK can easily recognize the British standard kitemark logo as a sign of good product quality and reliability. So, Yale AS, AS platinum and KM series cylinder locks have been approved for TS007 three-star rating.
ERA invincible locks
The invincible cylinder lock supports the central fixing hole with five times more metal than a regular cylinder lock. So, the ERA lock is hard to tamper with and impossible to break. Even if the lock snapping is being attempted, you needn't have to replace the lock.
Conclusion
As you can see, anti-snap locks claim to be high-end security locks that can meet your security requirement. Make sure to hire a professional from the UK locksmith service business directory because incorrect fitting can leave your door locks prone to lock snapping.

House Party Entertainment: Keep Certain Things In Mind
Thinking of hosting a house party? Don’t skip entertainment activities. Besides entertaining your guests with good food and drinks, add entertainment activities such as music and games to make the party memorable. Book an online entertainment service in the UK if you want ideas concerning house party entertainment activities.
This blog will offer you certain tips before planning a house party entertainment.
Things to remember while planning a house party entertainment
House party is incompetent with entertainment activities. However, you need to keep certain things in mind before organising a house party entertainment.
Guest list
You don't need to design formal invitation cards for a house party. Ensure that you have made a list of the attendees. Contact people and tell them personally to attend the entertainment event. Don't just post your event on social media as it will showcase that you are inviting all your friends and family members to the party. You will be in trouble if you can't control a massive crowd at your home. Inform your guests that the party will contain many entertainment activities so that they are encouraged to attend your event.
Date and time
Don't ask your guest to come any time after the evening on Saturday. It will be a disaster as guests will get confused regarding the event's date and time. House parties tend to extend longer as there is no ultimatum to shut the party down. Pick a time that is a little early so that people can roll up an hour later than the usual time. This will buy you time for accomplishing the preparation for the entertainment activities.
Entertainment
Music tops the list when you are planning an entertainment activity at your house party. You can easily connect your smartphone to a speaker and let the music take care of the party. A great option is to bring a swing or jazz singer, as the party is hosted in your house, there is a little scope for a live band. You can go for a DJ night if you are planning to organise the entertainment activity outdoors. Book an online entertainment service in the UK if you are unable to plan an entertainment activity yourself.
Theme
A dedicated colour or theme is an excellent way to make your event memorable. Ensure that the entertainment you are planning for your house party possesses a unique theme. If you are planning birthday entertainment, look for colourful themes. Design the area of your house with your favourite colour scheme where entertainment activities such as music or dance will take place.
Decorations
Once you have decided on the theme for the entertainment event, decorate the party space. Transform your room with decorative lights and other props. Focus on high-quality items at an affordable price so that the decoration is not disrupted in the middle of the party. Rely on a few up-lighters or table lamps to brighten up your entertainment activity. Select lights with special effects if you are planning for a DJ night at your residence.
Caterer
You don't want to check your kitchen frequently amidst the entertainment. Contact a catering service in your locality to help you out with your food choice. Go for bowl food as it is an idea for home parties. It is also an informal alternative to a seated dinner. You can engage your guests in chats while enjoying a delicious range of dishes.
Conclusion
House party entertainment can be of different types. Music is the most ideal one to start your event. To spice up the entertainment, including good food and drinks. Book an online entertainment service in the UK to help you out with entertainment ideas for your house party.

TS Film Thoughts Masterpost
As promised.
Let's start things off -
Breaking News - Headlines about the film
Dec 9 2022 - her film contract makes headlines
From what I can find, this is the first that anyone knows she is producing a film. There are no details released other than it's a script she wrote and she will be directing the film.
The next we hear is Dec 7, 2023 from the Tennessean --
It's been crickets, essentially. There are no public details I can find about the film anywhere including cast list, release date, content, ETC.
Interestingly, two days ago -- though uncertain of validity of source -
I don't have access to puck so cannot confirm what the article says; but this was recent! So; in theory, she finishes her Eras tour and moves directly in to film.
More on how Disney+ ties in our next section...
Who is Searchlight Pictures?
Created April 29, 1994 - formerly known as Fox Searchlight/under 20th/21st Century Fox
Biggest success: Slumdog Millionaire 187 Academy Ward Nominations with 46 wins; 5 Best Picture since 2009 117 Golden Globe Nominations; 51 wins 66 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations; 55 wins 137 Independent Spirit Awards, 54 Wins
Other Notable Films: 12 Years A Slave; Black Swan; Napoleon Dynamite;
20th century fox, prior to the creation of Searchlight, was prominent in the specialty and independent films market in the 1990s; it carried this interest into Searchlight, at least initially.
In 2012, it was incorporated into Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. Barf.
On Dec 14, 2017 Disney put their first bid out on 21st Century Fox/Fox Searchlight. On March 19, 2019 the companies merged and Disney acquired Fox Searchlight; Fox News notoriously split independently. Disney dropped the name Fox; so now we have just Searchlight Pictures. There is also a Searchlight Pictures TV and shorts production, which for the sake of time I will not get into.
For Funsies, here is a short film (Jun 18 2019, after Disney acquired) produced by them called....LAVENDER. About a gay man who has a relationship with a married gay couple. Can't make it up.
Anyway, since merging with Disney especially, the company seems to be LGBTQ friendly.
And yes, Joe Alwyn has worked with Searchlight, with tweets I found dating back to 2018 with Searchlight UK. Make of that what you would like, I have no real objective commentary on the matter.
Taylor as a Director
She also directed the Long Pond Studio Sessions and Miss Americana.
Most of her directorial work has been since the Lover debut. Most of which is very queer coded/sapphic.. and again, make of that what you will.
Appearances/Pap Walks, ETC
Since her split from JA, we have seen her with multiple friends in the film industry. Among these: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Keleigh Teller, Miles Teller, Sophie Turner, Emma Stone...
And dare I say.... Travis Kelce, who seems to want to break his way into the entertainment industry?
(aside from this headline; his failed dating show, his podcast, his multiple PR deals like with ZenWater... etc. I rest my case).
We also know there has been some B roll footage taken at the Chiefs Games.
Additionally, the media coverage of this relationship has been an absolute f*cking circus; with constant headlines of the two and their "engagement" / relationship dynamics. On Taylor's end, we have had constant references to Bejeweled (where she Ghosts); including Keleigh Teller giving her the opal ring.
The Speculation
Yall, this is my opinion - you can agree, disagree, etc; but I have no insider information. Just thoughts.
She makes her film directorial debut with Searchlight - recently acquired by Disney, who is pro-LGBTQ; and is clearly in deep with business deals with them, as seen on Taylor Nation and her Eras Tour Film.
We have rumors of her beginning her film production at the end of the ERAS tour, along with knowledge of her currently with B roll footage from chiefs games. We have multiple highly papp'ed appearances with her + TK; but also with multiple film stars, including Blake Lively (still not over that photo), Sophie Turner (I do think there's altruism here tbh on TS's end), and Keleigh. If you believe Keleigh is her stand in invisible bride.... Holy shit. Between the opal ring shutdown of the media circus as well as her and TS literally taking a page out of TSHOEH and dressing in character...
My ultimate suspicion is that she's using actual experiences of her current life-highly papp'ed - to tell her story. And that Keleigh is her stand in muse in this film.
I also think the @spade-riddles we've been getting about a final act ending, etc, pertain to her film. I don't have evidence aside from speculation.
I rest my case. Enjoy this post and make of it what you will.

Michael Sheen Reveals How The Pandemic Shaped His New BBC Drama With Adam Curtis & James Graham, And Why It Shifted From Middle England To His South Wales Hometown
Michael Sheen, Adam Curtis and James Graham‘s BBC drama The Way has been gestating for almost a decade but, for Good Omens star Sheen, the wait has been a necessary one.
As the BBC prepares to launch the drama set in Sheen’s hometown of Port Talbot, he told Deadline the pandemic and other recent events played an important role in shaping the script and believability of the three-part series, which is one of the broadcaster’s most anticipated of the year, bringing together three of the nation’s supreme creative talents.
Starring Sheen, who is making his directorial debut, Luke Evans (The Hobbit), Callum Scott Howells (It’s a Sin) and a wealth of talented Welsh actors, The Way tells the story of an ordinary family caught up in an extraordinary chain of events that ripple out from their home town. Driven by celebrated documentary maker Curtis, the drama takes an experimental approach by imagining a civil uprising in a small industrial Welsh town. Fleeing unrest, the Driscolls are forced to escape the country they’ve always called home and the certainties of their old lives, but will they be overwhelmed by their memories of the past or lay their ghosts to rest and take the risk of an unknown future?
Sheen said the idea had always been to make a story about an “explosion of unrest” as “believable” as possible. Before the pandemic, the team initially dismissed ideas around making an entire population remain indoors, or placing a hard border around Wales.
“Lockdown gave the story a whole new lease of life,” he told Deadline. “When it ended we revisited the story and it allowed us to be bolder, particularly around ideas of conspiracies and Covid. We knew it was ‘of the moment’ and didn’t want something to feel dated, but we didn’t ever imagine it would be quite as timely as it has turned out to be.”
Producer Bethan Jones, who runs The Way co-producer Red Seam with Sheen, said commissioners in the early days were worried it would be “a bit too dystopian” and were querying: “Haven’t we seen [shows like] this before?” “But now the audience have experienced some of these things themselves and are watching with all the knowledge of what that means,” added Jones.
As the episodes develop, Sheen said that “paradoxically the absurd nature of it all starts to come to the fore.” He said he wanted his first directing experience and Red Seam’s debut commission (it is co-produced with Little Door) to act as a mini guide to living in the UK over the past decade.
“That is a reflection of trying to capture what it has felt like to be living in our culture over the last 10 years, where you are never sure if you’re living in a sitcom or horror film,” added the four-time BAFTA-nominated Frost/Nixon star, who attended The Way’s screening last night.
The industrial Welsh location plays a crucial part in setting the tone and symbolism behind The Way. It was initially forged with a middle-class English family in mind, Sheen revealed, before being shifted to his hometown of Port Talbot, an industrial town that has been in the news recently due to the much-criticized closure of part of the legacy Tata steelworks.
“We knew we needed it to take place somewhere with a history of unrest,” he said. “It needed to feel like there was unfinished business there. That led me to thinking about my hometown and the steelworks, and the past then became more important to us in the story.”
Sheen moved back to Port Talbot around the time The Way was first developing. He subsequently sold his houses, gave the proceeds to charity and declared himself a “not for profit actor.”
He said his town is “full of interesting contradictions.” “It has a beautiful area by the sea and then there is the heavy industry in the middle of it. It has an extraordinary mixture of things and using that in the telling of this story was exciting.”
Working with the community was integral to the show’s authenticity and Jones explained that numerous local extras were used in protest scenes around the town hall and steelworks. “It’s that thing of people being stuck in the past and finding a new way forward,” she added.
Four-time BAFTA-winning documentary-maker Curtis is cutting his scripted teeth with The Way and Sheen celebrated his influence both stylistically – including use of archive and CCTV footage – and on the development of the story.
“He has always been a fantastic provocateur and is good at thinking about where the power lies and what is under the surface” said Sheen. “And I wanted us to have a dream-like quality. By the end of our first chat I knew that even though [having Curtis involved] would make things more complicated, it was such an interesting possibility and I wanted him involved.”
Sherwood scribe Graham, meanwhile, who worked with Sheen on hit ITV drama Quiz, was the perfect choice to pen something “not typically dystopian and not overly serious.” “He brings a brilliant combination of big ‘state of the nation’ ideas with character, humor, warmth and the everyday,” added Sheen.
Together, the trio have forged something Sheen hopes will tap into the “strong British tradition” of filmmaking led by trailblazers such as Ken Loach, Alan Clarke and Jimmy McGovern, coming at a time when ITV’s post office drama has led to much excited chatter about the power of traditional broadcasting to deliver change.
“[The post office drama] took an issue that had been in the public eye for a long time but never really connected and made something fantastic out of it,” he said. “Long may that continue because it would be a terrible, terrible thing if we stopped making that stuff.”

Can I ask, how does one go about becoming an editor? Like, where do you apply for jobs?? What kinda training do you do?? Are there companies that hire out editors to writers? Im just so confused about it. Ive always been interested in editing, and am considering doing it as a job
Editing is a weird career.
Really, I started as a writer. Like, when I was eleven. In jr. high and high school, I was in a writing critique group and I wrote a lot. I graduated from university with a degree in theatre, film, and creative writing. I was often the person my friends came to when they needed help with a paper (or the correct placement of a semicolon). I've been involved in fandom since I was about 17, and I was very fortunate to fall in with a group of excellent writers who were also excellent betas and editors. I learned a TON from them without realizing how much I was learning.
I started editing by accident, really. Sometimes, that's how it happens. I mostly got gigs here and there through friends or word of mouth. About ten years ago, I got more serious about it. I worked for companies that paid horribly. Then I did an editing test for a company that paid less horribly, and they hired me. After a couple of years editing countless academic papers, ESL academic papers, novels, emails, business documents, etc., I decided to branch out on my own (mostly so I could work on more fiction; I was burned out on academic papers).
I joined Editors Canada, started volunteering with them, got a lot more experience, and took a few continuing ed courses to gauge where my skills were at and to determine if I needed to upgrade my education. I decided I didn't need to do that, because I already knew the things I was being taught.
I read a lot of books on editing, writing, and craft. I familiarized myself with the Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA, and a couple of other style guides. I learned the differences in spelling, punctuation, and style between US, UK, and Canadian English. I went to webinars, conferences, and courses (all the major editing associations offer these, usually cheaper or free for members; they are a great way to determine what kinds of editing you actually LIKE). I learned the difference between rules and preferences, and when to apply them to a text.
I work freelance, which means I have my own business as a sole proprietor. I'm a contractor with a couple of companies who sometimes send work my way, but most of my clients are individual writers planning to either self-publish or polish their work before seeking traditional publication via the agent/tradpub route.
Freelancing has many perks but is not particularly secure. Especially if you're American and need an employer to provide health insurance, or if you're single and don't have another income to lean on when contracts are scarce. These days, most of my work comes via referrals, my website, or the listing I have in the Editors Canada directory. I follow a couple of editing-related Facebook groups; I've learned a lot there, and I've also picked up the occasional client. A couple of people have found me through LinkedIn. A couple of people have found me through here!
I've never worked in-house for a publisher--mostly because having control over how many hours I work and when I work them is my top priority. In-house is a whole different ballgame; I know a bit about it from my peers, but I don't have firsthand experience to pass on. These jobs are supposedly more secure--and they tend to be salaried, with benefits, etc.
"Editing" is a GIANT umbrella term. There are SO many types of editing out there. People tend to think of book publishing first, but that's only one avenue. There are also different kinds of editors who tackle different types of problems. I've done enough of everything to recognize that I am much happier when I'm working on big picture stuff--coaching, developmental editing, manuscript critique. Others specialize in the nitty gritty mechanical details that make proofreading or copy editing a better fit.
Right now, the bulk of my work life is actually spent ghostwriting. The client's business-materials editor posted that his client was looking for someone to help with characterization in a novel. I ended up winning that contract. He came to me with one monster book. I helped him realize it needed to be at least a trilogy, and now he has plans for a ten-book series--and I'm helping write it. But I got the job because of the work I've done on the development side of editing--and because I've spent SO MUCH TIME learning about characterization (via acting, fandom/writing fanfic, reading, etc.). So. It all feeds into the same place.
The tl;dr is that my experience has been a bizarre mix of being in the right place at the right time, ongoing professional development, and learning the value of volunteering with an association. If I were starting down this career path right now, I'd probably do an editing certificate (there are many out there, depending on country). I'd definitely join an association sooner (even as a student member) and volunteer.
Actually, the ultimate tl;dr is ... this industry IS CONFUSING. So, don't feel bad about being confused. It's actually probably about eight different kinds of job wearing a trench-coat and pretending it's something called "Editing."

Can you give a step-by-step example?
Okay, let’s say, for instance, that you’re in London and you’re looking for a Korean facial massage (kyung-rak). Here’s what I’d recommend you to do:
Get in touch with the more glamorous Korean girls at your university and ask them for recommendations. It would also be worthwhile paying visits to the East Asian supermarkets in your area and checking their noticeboards and any business cards displayed on the till.
Have a look at Korean expat forums and newspapers in the UK. 04UK is the biggest Korean expat forum for Britain, and Korean Weekly (코리안위클리) is the major newspaper which keeps a good selection of classifieds and directories. There’s also the London Korean News.
Research logically. New Malden has the highest population of Koreans outside of Korea, so it would be sensible to start looking there. Use the location tag function on Instagram and search broadly—looking for a “spa” and filtering through results manually is going to be more effective than trying to search specifically for “facial massage”.
When you’ve found any kind of aesthetic clinic run/frequented by Koreans in London, take a look at the ‘suggested’ section on their IG as well as who they are following. Compile a list of every account which looks good to you.
Take that list, and start shortlisting by making notes of the techniques, products, and results shown on their page, their reviews, and their sanitation policies. It’s best to have a top choice and a couple of backups just in case they can’t/won’t book you for whatever reason.
Message the account politely, in Korean if they’ve mostly or only used Korean on their page, and ask any questions you have and book your desired treatment. Remember to take cash (always appreciated, even if they do offer card payments!), be prepared for intense treatments in less-than-glamorous locations, and use Google Translate, inspiration photos and videos, and/or bring a Korean-speaking friend with you (check whether it’s okay to bring a friend first!) to navigate any language barriers.

December 2023 Newsletter – Year in Review
Here is our December Newsletter!
Main event:
As we end 2023, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on our victories for the year. Truly, it has been an incredible ride, with far more success than we could have hoped for.
The rest of the text is under the cut; relevant links are embedded in the text on our website.
Lobbying with the US Senate: We worked with Senator Baldwin’s office to help the COOL Online Act (a bill to crack down on dishonest resellers) pass committee. Read our analysis of the bill here.
Fighting Etsy’s Reserve Payment Policy: Our work, combined with the heroic efforts of UK sellers and the media, pressured Etsy to reduce or lift their devastating payment reserve policy for many sellers. Samantha Vass, a prominent UK seller who spoke out, had her Etsy shop suspended, learn more and support her business here.
Feedback to the FTC: An US Federal Trade Commission lawyer reached out to us for feedback on a new FTC rule against unfair and deceptive business practices around online platform fees. Learn more here.
Presentation to UK Small Business Commissioner: We were able to discuss the issue of online platforms messing with indie sellers’ money in a series of meetings with UK Small Business Commissioner Liz Barclay. Watch a video of the presentation here.
Marketplace Research Project: We had over 1,000 participants in our research survey on what creative indie sellers and their customers want from an online marketplace. Read more about how we will use that data to hold marketplaces accountable here.
In the works:
The first annual ISG virtual convention will be April 13-14, 2024!
We will launch our Marketplace Accreditation Program, unveil our new membership site, and discuss how we can continue to fight the exploitation of creative indie sellers by big tech platforms.
Panels will include:
What to do if you get screwed by a tech platform. – with Katharine from the Electronic Frontier Foundation
Etsy Alternatives: Data and tools to help you find the best marketplaces for your business
How to use your Etsy shop to direct traffic to your own site (without breaking Etsy’s rules) – with Kristi Cassidy, ISG President
Results from our Marketplace Research Project: What do sellers and customers really want from an online marketplace – with Samantha Close, Ph.D.
Interview with Racheal from Mayfli marketplace in the UK
Interview with Jon from goimagine marketplace in the US
Get your ticket now to reserve your spot! Tickets only cost $1 to help cover the costs of the convention.
Share your story!
The FTC is seeking public comment on their proposed “Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees”. After our meeting with the FTC, we are excited about the rule because it will also protect creative indie sellers from unfair and deceptive fees from marketplaces. If the rule goes through, we hope to use it to combat Etsy’s forced off-site ads and other unfair practices.
Please take a moment to share your thoughts in a public comment, we want to make sure the perspective of creative indie sellers is represented!
We heard you:
We know that the seller member directory, and members-only parts of the website in general are a bit difficult to navigate. One of our first goals in 2024 is to update our membership with new software and far more features. Stay tuned for information on how to set up your profile on the new site!
What ISG needs right now:
While we’ve managed some amazing things with a very small budget, thanks to our amazing volunteers and open source software, we need more funding for 2024 to continue to grow and advocate on your behalf.
Please consider making a small donation to the Indie Sellers Guild. If half of our members donate just $5, we will raise enough funding for the next 6 months. Or you can buy one of our awesome merch items so you can represent the Guild and show off the work of your fellow artists. The Guild receives $5 from every merch purchase.
Thanks so much for your support!

May 7 - Stranger In A Strange Land
Re Dracula/Dracula Daily
I think from now on I will continue to read Dracula Daily as I listen to Re Dracula. This time it was not a line that was skipped, but 3 paragraphs. It's an understandable thing to skip, just very specific details on the house Dracula wishes to purchase. Honestly, I'm glad they skipped it. I'd rather not listen to them prattle on about the houses walls and the streets it lies on. Reading and Listening are two very different experiences, treating them as such was a good choice. But it is good to know what was missed. Especially as I'm new to the story and would rather not accidentally skip something important.
But I'll go into the missed parts when I get to it, for now, the story.
When Jonathon woke up to find a note from Dracula excusing him from dinner, I couldn't help but wonder how many excuses the man has up his sleeves. They can only go on for so long, surely. It is interesting how the author shows things to be suspicious through absence. Whether it be the Count himself, the lack of mirrors or there being no servants at all. I guess that driver was him then.
Jonathon's finally gathered himself to exploring the place too. First his room, which was filled with precious things centuries old but extremely well-maintained. Is Dracula taking good care of his belongings, or are there some practical uses to his magic? Then out of his rooms to locked doors. And of the first unlocked room he finds is a library which immediately captures him. A man after my own heart.
It is curious how many of those books are English and clearly new. Has the Count been visiting the bookstores. There are some that are clearly new(ish) by the titles.
I'll list some of the books down below, including those mentioned later.
London Directory (now known as the white pages), a telephone system was already well established so he access to both their numbers and addresses
Red & Blue Books (government briefings, if modern terms match), so he's getting a feel for the lay of business and authority too
Whitaker's Almanac (facts, figures and statistics relating to the UK and the world), to help him understand the wider and more minute facts of the world he plans to venture into, I would guess
The Army & Navy Lists (lists of army and navy soldiers)
The Law Lists (I'm not sure, maybe the laws?)
Bradshaw's Guide (railway timetables and travel guides), he was actively reading this one
A marked Atlas open to England (an iffily marked marked, not spooky at all)
It's a bit eery, considering the genre of the story. But not as much as what comes up in their following conversations.
Dracula showed up while Jonathon was browsing and was glad to have found him there. He insists that he doesn't know English fully but would like for Jonathon talk with him more so he can learn. He goes far as to request he picks up any mistake, any off intonation, anything mismatched at all. I guess to better blend in and not get caught in his violence. He himself states that,
But a stranger in a strange land, he is no one; men know him not—and to know not is to care not for.
It contrasts well with how Jonathon was treated by Carpathian citizens on his arrival. How hard they work to send him, and failing that, protecting him.
He goes to say that even still he would be a master, or at least master to none. So he definitely isn't looking to live among them when blending in.
At this point Dracula officially allows Jonathon into any unlocked part of the castle (adventure, anyone?) and moves onto the cultural differences. Considering how he directed Jonathon to his questions of his strange experiences thus far, focussing on the treasure marker blue flames, I'd say he's decided to kick the gaslighting into gear. And even in these explanations the Count has focussed on violent histories and speaking lowly of the citizens here.
His character isn't just shown through disdain and violent interests, but also his strong focus on the house and surrounding areas. He questioned Jonathon on various aspects of the house and location fiercely and had gone into his own research as well, startling him at how much more of the place he knew. Dracula says he obviously must as both Jonathon and his boss, Peter Hawkins, would be in Exeter, miles away.
Dracula is good at saying things that aren't odd or are easily excusable. But when added up, 😬. There was no need for the 'I know where you live' comment, really.
Here's where the podcast skips. In between "So!" and "I am glad that it is old and big".
In the missed bits Dracula signed his lease and other necessary legal documents, and Jonathon got them ready for mailing. Dracula asks how him came across a place so suitable, so Jonathon reads out notes on the place he had found. And yeah, it's suitable all right.
"At Purfleet, on a by-road, I came across just such a place as seemed to be required, and where was displayed a dilapidated notice that the place was for sale. It is surrounded by a high wall, of ancient structure, built of heavy stones, and has not been repaired for a large number of years. The closed gates are of heavy old oak and iron, all eaten with rust.
"The estate is called Carfax, no doubt a corruption of the old Quatre Face, as the house is four-sided, agreeing with the cardinal points of the compass. It contains in all some twenty acres, quite surrounded by the solid stone wall above mentioned. There are many trees on it, which make it in places gloomy, and there is a deep, dark-looking pond or small lake, evidently fed by some springs, as the water is clear and flows away in a fair-sized stream. The house is very large and of all periods back, I should say, to mediæval times, for one part is of stone immensely thick, with only a few windows high up and heavily barred with iron. It looks like part of a keep, and is close to an old chapel or church. I could not enter it, as I had not the key of the door leading to it from the house, but I have taken with my kodak views of it from various points. The house has been added to, but in a very straggling way, and I can only guess at the amount of ground it covers, which must be very great. There are but few houses close at hand, one being a very large house only recently added to and formed into a private lunatic asylum. It is not, however, visible from the grounds."
I agree with Dracula. How did he come across a place so well suited to him? I'll leave a link on what a Carfax is down below.
But this is where we get back to the podcast.
Jonathon's observational skills are serving him well. Dracula goes on about how he is old and weary and likes the shadows and time to to myself, but to Jonathon his expression doesn't match at all. To him his smile seemed "malignant and saturnine", meaning malevolent and gloomy. Even worse, when Dracula left and Jonathon piled together his papers, he found an Atlas opened to a map of England. It was marked up with circles at the east side of London, on Exeter (the area where he and his boss lives, very creepy, very ominous) and on Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast.
Seriously, just run.
When Dracula comes back to chat until the rooster crowed, his instincts kicked back into gear as well. I get that you feel "under obligation to meet my host's wishes in every way", but kick that duty or social anxiety out of the way and leave. Even you thought the chill you were feeling was something reminiscent to turning of tides when one meets death. Listen to your instincts and just go already.
At least he was able to rest after after this journal entry. Probably. But we can definitely see the Count testing more and more of his bounds, slowly pushing Jonathon into a corner.
It was another good chapter.
My thanks to Re Dracula and Dracula Daily.
