Start-up launches new solar-powered, self-driving boats to clean up ocean waste

Hong Kong-based marine tech start-up Clearbot is set to launch a new generation of bigger solar-powered autonomous boats to boost its efforts to clean up polluted waters in India.

Clearbot's latest fleet of self-driving electric boats will each have the capacity to pick up around 500kg of plastic waste and other rubbish from the ocean when they are expected to be deployed in March. That is double the capacity of each of the company's current water-borne robotic cleaners operating in the seas and lakes of India.

The start-up founded by University of Hong Kong graduates is hoping to electrify the marine services industry, according to Utkarsh Goel, co-founder and chief technology officer.

"We want to build these boats that do this dirty, dirty job that is happening with [manned, diesel] boats around the world and automate them and make them more sustainable," said Goel in an interview.

Established in 2019, Clearbot started off as a student project to help Indonesian surfers clean up waterways efficiently, as locals were unable to deal with the flow of rubbish. The project led Goel and co-founder Sidhant Gupta to understand the demand for sustainable infrastructure in the marine services industry globally.

In the past year, Clearbot has deployed 13 boats which can each collect up to 250kg of plastic waste per day to tackle projects in Hong Kong and India, Goel said. The self-navigating electric vessels collect waste from the surface of the water and deposit it in designated areas for collection and recycling.

Beeping For No Reason smoke alarms have a special place in sensory hell and one of the ones in the appt was doing that this morning and oh I was SOOOOOO CLOSE to just ripping it out of the ceiling

It doesn't help that there are TWO like a foot away from each other so I couldn't tell wHICH little pain disc was acting up

#I think I got the right one #like what is the POINT of a 'click to hush' if it WON'T SHUT UP WHEN YOU CLICK IT #fastest way to get me violently overstimulated and mad is an unpredictable interrupting stimuli when I'm trying to do something #it's why I had to work overnight at the grocery store #and couldn't handle working solo at a busy dry cleaners even though I overall didn't mind the work #but the cats both got scared and HID when it went off #so that's fuuuuuun

i have had maybe one of top three worst weeks of this whole year and i got through it and i am so proud of myself :)

#like first of all: scummy landlord doing scummy landlord things #then my roommate gets ringworm and we all end up getting it #i got it all over my face which was HELL.#(right at the corner of my eye too!!)#then i find out a mouse was in my room with me for almost a week #so while dealing with ringworm i have to try and catch a mouse while im sleeping in my roommates room #then i had to make food for a thanksgiving potluck my friend was hosting #and then couldnt even go bc i was so u comfy from the ringworm :(#on top of all this!! i just got promoted at work #and i work in a restaurant. and its sports + thanksgiving season #and a promotion means a harder (but much better paying!) position #so i was working my ass off during a busy season !!#and we caught the mouse + released it #and im a massive germaphobe and i had to deep clean my WHOLE room and sanitize and clear out EVERYTHING #after already having an awful and stressful and restless week #and now. i am sitting in my bed again. in my room that smells like chemical cleaner but not mouse anymore. most of my ringworm is gone #i still have some stuff to clean and sanitize #so its not over yet #but the worst part is #and i am very proud of myself for making it through it :)#vent post #tw infection #tw mice #omg and i forgot!#my car almost broke down two weeks ago so i had to take it to a mechanic while i was dealing with all of this #and at the start of the hell week i thought it was going to die and i would have to try and find a new one #luckily it ended up fine! but it was extra stress i did not need #like all at once too #grahh

my landlady is coming to my house on monday to a) check if she needs to redecorate before the next tenants and b) decide if she wants to buy my fridge off me

i have never met my landlady before, and my house is currently a disaster, as houses typically are when you're in the middle of moving and half your stuff is at the new place but you don't have any furniture there yet so a lot of random objects are still in this house

i have so much to do before monday if i want to make a good enough impression that i can be confident about getting my deposit back. sigh.

#i'm hiring end-of-tenancy cleaners hopefully #bc fuck cleaning the oven. frankly. that's all it is #i just really don't want to do the oven. i'd be tempted to hire them just to do that #but honestly i'm tired i'm busy i'm disabled. i'll just have them do the whole thing and then i don't have to stress #but they're not replying to my enquiry/booking atm so we'll see how that goes #pearsanta
