Ty Lee pushes the cup towards her, and this "I work cleaning crime scenes" girlfriend of hers looks at it like it's the most disgusting thing she has ever seen. Miss I clean blood and guts for a living, disgusted by fucking soda. Miss I drink straight vodka, I eat a whole ass lemon, without issues, is staring at a soda like it's the most vile drink of all times.

Good thing she's adorable.

It's ironic that this is the same woman that demolishes the sweetest of the sweet milkshakes, a bomb of sugar that should send you into a coma.

"Alright, I'll not pressure you."

"Why do you say it like you're trying to pressure me into something much worse?"

"Because you look at soda like it's the devil in a paper cup."

your post about mailee says everything i’ve felt about how this fandom (and many others) treat female characters, especially in the context of sapphic shipping.

i could never personally get into mailee due to the annoyance that is it’s fandom. the constant bashing of certain sapphic ships by proclaiming them as toxic (as if that isn’t the appeal) was so annoying to see in 2020 that it sadly left a sour taste in my mouth.

it also just fits into the most boring stereotypes of cute and fluffy sapphic ship!! something that tends to be the case nowadays.

but even with all that aside it’s obvious why mailee exists. they’re a side pairing for more popular ships and oh what a surprise, it’s a mlm ship leading it. i can’t deny that zukka fans mostly contribute to mailee content because they do but also how deeply annoying it is to see this pattern of wlw side pairing for mlm over and over again.

especially with atla of all shows. a show that actually has a complex female character whose unintentionally lesbian-coded but people will not bother exploring her queerness because shes “mentally ill” or “too much” or “she doesn’t need that rn” or whatever excuses people come up with.

it’s a shame to see all this play out but i’m not surprised. at the end of the day it’s always going to be mlm or f/m at this point.

oh wow i'm glad to hear i'm not the only one feeling this way!! like i mentioned in my previous post, i honestly don't really like mai, but i've tried to get myself to over the years. in 2019 i had rewatched the show and thought "hey, mai and ty lee are kinda cute together, i still don't love mai but maybe i could if i try to think more deeply about her character and see if i can find some meta and fics and such that flesh her out and examine her good points. maybe ty lee could be someone who really understands her and brings out the good in her". but mailee was very much a rarepair back then and i could only really find fluffy drabbles to read. i like fluffy drabbles and all, but they just weren't what i needed in this case. so then in 2020 the show gets put on netflix, i come back from a tumblr hiatus to see there's been a massive fandom renaissance, and now mailee is so popular it's getting to high numbers on weekly fandometrics lists! great!

so then i again look for content about them and see that a ton of it is either zuko-centric or zukka-centric with them as a side pairing at best, and zukka just isn't for me. i have a close friend who ships it so i understand the appeal, but i'm always and forever a zutara stan. i could've multishipped (i do reblog cute fanart of them on occasion) if i didn't keep seeing things from the zukka side of the fandom that really frustrate me, this being one of them. and every time i choose to dive back into the fandom and see if things have improved it's still the same, i should not have to go through 53 of the most kudos'd fics in mailee's tag before i find a fic about them especially since they have less than 1/5th the amount of fics as zukka in the first place, and it just makes me sad that this is an issue in almost every fandom. i may not like mai, but you would really think the people making shippy content involving her would like her and be willing to actually focus on her in said content!

as for the constant bashing of other more "toxic" f/f ships and unwillingness to examine another female character's complexity and potential queerness while using her mental illness as an excuse... i believe i know exactly who and what you're talking about it's an issue with certain mailee content for me as well. see, even though i've loved ATLA since i was a kid and have been on the internet just as long, i used to always dismiss the concept of tyzula because i myself never appreciated azula enough and wasn't interested in ships with her (and because frankly i really hate how azula's voice actress sexualizes the ship). but on my current rewatch of the show i've started loving azula a lot more and now like to imagine her redeemed and happy, repairing her damaged relationships with her family and friends and maybe even falling in love. i've realized that part of the appeal of tyzula for me is that while, yes, azula's entire dynamic with both mai and ty lee is toxic and messy during the show, i don't personally think it always was. i think the three of them were genuine friends until things gradually got fucked up because of how ozai's treatment of azula fucked her up. and i think that if azula were to have a redemption arc, the 3 of them could salvage what once was and have a healthy friendship again.

a lot of mailee fans do not seem to agree with this, though, because i've seen several metas and headcanons that rely on the idea that the two of them were always just afraid of evil, nasty azula and that they can bond over how much they hate her. i am not here for that, and yeah, i'm also not here for the whole "this ship would never work because [insert character] just isn't ready for a relationship, i ship them x therapy!!" thing fandoms love to use as a way to demonize certain ships. mentally ill people can be in happy, loving relationships and they can go to therapy while in said relationships. they can even use therapy to--gasp--figure out how to keep their mental health issues from getting in the way of continuing to have healthy relationships! this happens in real life and i fully believe it can happen in a fantasy cartoon for children. also, i know some people use the comics to justify the idea that mai and ty lee have just always hated and been afraid of azula, because apparently it's implied in those that they were fake friends? but fuck the comics, they're OOC and horribly written lmao.

this ended up being a much longer reply than i initially intended but yeah, all this is to say that i 100% agree with you and thank you for sharing your thoughts, anon. sapphic ships and the female characters within them deserve just as much space in fandom as m/m and m/f ships get, to be fully explored and appreciated in their own right and even to sometimes be complicated and imperfect.

Sorry this took a while! It actually took me a while to come up with an idea for this one.

Azula glared at her reflection in the mirror. Why was this so utterly challenging? Azula was a hard worker and willing to tackle any problem, but this left her speechless, without answers. And she hated it.

She’d never asked anyone to the Firelight Festival before. As a child, she’d been obligated to go with her family. She had no idea how to go about this, especially not when said person that she wanted to ask was her best friend.

Azula had already nearly destroyed their friendship during the war. How could she ask Ty Lee to the Firelight Festival without ruining it again?

As if summoned by her thoughts, Ty Lee bounced into the room, only offering a quick knock on the door before entering. Usually, the quick entry without much warning would have annoyed Azula, but not when it was Ty Lee. Never with Ty Lee.

« Hey, Zula! » her best friend’s tone of voice matched her bubbly personality, as it always did. It made Azula feel like she was transported to a world where everything was suddenly okay. « I can’t wait for the Firelight Festival later today! The lights are gonna be so pretty and the food’s gonna be amazing, and there’s going to be dancing! I wait for this every year! »

« Really? » Azula’s voice was practically shaking as she struggled to contain her nerves. « I don’t remember you going when we were children. »

« That’s because I couldn’t see you. You were always with your family when we were kids. »

Azula sighed. « That I remember. »

Ty Lee swung around the chair that Azula was sitting in and cocked her head. « Ooh, I wonder who’s gonna go together. I saw so many adorable couples in town today! »

Azula felt her face grow hot. « I’m sure. » A pause. There was no way around this. « Are...you going with anyone? »

To her dismay, Ty Lee nodded enthusiastically. « Yeah! Mai and Zuko and I are going as a group. You should come with us! »

Azula sighed. She would pretty much rather die than go to the Firelight Festival with her brother, but if Ty Lee was going to be there...  « I’d like that. »

Even if an offer to go as a group meant Ty Lee didn’t feel the same way about her (and honestly, she couldn’t blame her)...well, Azula wasn’t letting her friend go a second time.

At the festival.

Ty Lee sighed. She wasn’t used to being nervous around people that she liked. Maybe that was because she’d never really liked anyone before. Not like this.

An offer to go as a group? What sort of message did that send? What had she been thinking?

She’d wanted to ask the Fire Nation princess to go with her, but she’d gotten nervous. It had taken her by surprise, and she’d just spit out the first words that had come into her brain.

Still, she thought as she wandered through the streets with Azula, Zuko, and Mai, this wasn’t so bad. She loved spending time with her friends, and the festival was one of the loveliest things she’d ever seen.

The night went on, and Ty Lee felt her hopes falling. Azula seemed no closer to her than to Zuko or Mai, perfectly friendly (for Azula) but nothing more. Even as the fireworks began, she felt her usual smile dwindle a little. She’d been silly to think a princess would ever like her that way. She was a girl from the circus, after all, strange and un memorable all at once.

But tonight was not a night to think about her insecurities, and Ty Lee forced a smile as they watched the fireworks. All around them, the streets erupted into cheers and music. People began to dance.

She felt a nudge on her left shoulder. Turning, she saw Azula beckoning to her. The princess was uncharacteristically quiet, almost as though she was afraid to speak. Wordlessly, she led the acrobat over to a stand selling fire lilies.

Ty Lee squealed. « Oh Azula, look how pretty they are! » Azula offered her a smile in return, exchanging a gold piece and a strange glance with the merchant. Nodding, he handed a flower to Ty Lee.

Ty Lee grinned, disappointment temporarily forgotten. « Oh, Zula! This is gorgeous! » She hugged the flower close to her chest.

« Open the petals, » said Azula, a strange tremor in her voice. Wait...was she blushing?

Ty Lee carefully opened the petals of the red flower. Inside sat a note, written in a neat cursive Ty Lee recognized as belonging to Azula.

Will you dance with me?

Ty Lee gasped! « Oh, Zula! » She threw herself into a hug, and was happily surprised when Azula hugged her back. « I’ve been trying to ask you something like this all day, but I got so nervous and I just spit out random words! I’m sorry! »

Azula laughed, truly smiling for the first time all night. « Me too. But I got so nervous that I could barely speak. It was strange and I hated it. »

Ty Lee laughed. « Well, you found a way to ask without speaking! You were always so smart. »

Azula was definitely blushing now. « Well, now that all our silly little nerves are out of the way... » she turned to Ty Lee and held out her hand, « may I have this dance? »

« It would be my honor. »

Not sure if this is actually a drabble, but I had so much fun writing it that I don’t care. I love Tyzula.

Ty Lee stood on the stick while Azula made a second ring of fire. Too close together for Ty Lee to land in between, her friend needed a jump powerful enough to surpass both.

“Fear is something to overcome,” Azula recited, primly. She didn’t make it sound as imposing as grandfather. “You want to be prepared for everything, right?”

Azula must have imagined the flash of frustration in Ty Lee’s face. She jumped and the ends of her braid caught a fire she put off with her own palms.

“Next time make it three rings!” Ty Lee bragged.

out of her two friends, she'd been most fond of ty lee specifically. fond of that bubbly facade she put up in order to hide the weapon in her touch. fond of the way she smiled and the way her eyes would glitter. fond of the feeling of her fingers gently caressing her hair.

(when they were both 10 years of age, ty lee braided her hair. she let her keep the hairtie.)

that's why it didn't feel real when ty lee chi-blocked her. things felt like they'd started going in slow motion as she lost her ability to move, only snapping back into the real world as soon as she made contact with the cold ground. that weapon in her touch had become more dangerous than it had ever been. azula never expected it to be used against her. nothing made sense.

and everyone seemed shocked. azula, mai, and even ty lee herself. she wasn't expecting it to work. azula knew that. azula knew ty lee better than mostly anyone.

but did she know her well enough?

Azula's on a war path. And Katara can only facepalm and pity their opponents.

Who thought Uno with the two most competitive people in the world would end well? The only reason Zuko and Azula aren't trading punches yet is because Zuko has Drunk curled on his lap, the little menace of a kitten, and Azula has Katara on her lap (according to her, also a little menace of a kitten).

Azula treats a card game like a war, making Zuko buy more cards means she's successful in the conquest of new lands to her empire.

"You're adorably stupid," Katara whispers on ear, quite comfortable on her lap, she's not sure how Azula manages to keep her card in hand and an arm around Katara, holding her safe there.

"I'm a genius."

"This is a luck game!" Zuko exclaimed.

"Shut up, loser," she throws a +4 on the table, for the humiliation of the brother.

Katara laughs, she'll give Azula a good, long reward later that night.

I had a dream about Azula and Ty Lee a la Jennifer’s Body

I’m seeing this from Azula’s POV but I’m there for the ride.

Ty Lee is looking at Azula, obvious mixture of fear and desire in her wide eyes, underscored by just a touch of anger.

Azula sighs and shakes her head. Her smile is sad and bitter as she grabs Ty Lee’s and digs her nails in the soft flesh of her cheeks.

Ty Lee stifles a moan and grits her teeth. Azula let’s go but doesn’t pull away. She caresses Ty Lee’s cheeks, lightly tracing the line of her clenched jaw.

In a tone dripping with bitter amusement, (and maybe some form of twisted love), Azula says, “Don’t worry, Ty Lee. You’ll rise up from the ashes I’ll leave behind.”

(Everything goes dark. Either the dream sequence ends there, or Azula closes her eyes. The last imprint left behind is Azula’s acceptance; that she will die by Ty Lee’s hands. Or, that she has too, because there’s no one else worthy of that right.)
