I want to make information on Lithuanian folklore in English more public so I am uploading the threads that until now were only on my Twitter. I present to you a comprehensive thread on aitvarai, the ancient Lithuanian deities of the skies
(art credits: Neringa Meškauskaitė, Agroshka )
Aitvarai (etymologically "ones to appease" or "irrepressible force") are domestic creatures associated with all 4 elements: a comet of fire which harnesses wind for chaos, helping Earth and its people while being chased and punished by Perkūnas for stealing water.
Most commonly a black rooster, they can appear as a variety of creatures: different kinds of black birds, grass snakes, whirlwinds, comets and even men if they fall in love with a woman that they want to marry.
Though very powerful ancient beings, Aitvarai choose to associate themselves with people, with villagers being able to either hatch them from an egg of a 7 year old rooster or attract them by leaving out hot, untouched meals like porridge and scrambled eggs.
When part of a household, the duties of an aitvaras were to bring riches to his caretakers, either as money (money carrying aitvarai were golden, deep red or silver in coloration) or as wheat (grey and black colors). Note that aitvarai only served the poor, tricking the wealthy people who tried to use them.
Aitvarai were both a blessing and a curse: while they did bring wealth, they did it by stealing from the neighbors of their master, making them most hated in the local village. They were also clingy and dangerous to keep, burning down the houses of those who mishandled them by feeding them manure, tampering with their meals or disobeying the rules they set for the person.
It is said however that their thieving, evil nature was a characteristic given to them by the Catholic church, which wanted to demonize every pagan creature in Baltic mythology.
In fact, aitvarai were considered genuine problems by those who believed that they would steal from them: from warding off statuettes in granaries to court cases from 1700's accusing people of harboring an aitvaras (I found only one source claiming this, so take it with a grain of salt).
However, the desire to have an aitvaras was apparent as well, shown by modifications peasants would make to their homes: holes in the doors of granaries would be made so an aitvaras could enter the home easily.
Some rituals for stealing back from a flying aitvaras exist as well, ranging from simply showing it your bottom, to cutting oneself with a rusty knife, pinning the corner of your jacket to the ground, ripping or otherwise ruining clothing.
Even if the reaction of people to them was mixed, aitvarai were considered pests by the gods due to their tendency to drink/hoard water, for which they were struck dead by Perkūnas, exploding into sparks that caused forest fires, the thunder god's lightning forming ponds, holes and swamps, terraforming the earth.

The Aitvaras [Lithuanian mythology]:
Very rarely, a (male) rooster can lay an egg. At least, according to Lithuanian folklore. When it does, this egg can hatch into an Aitvaras: a rooster-like creature with a tail that consists of permanently burning flames. It is said that if an Aitvaras chooses your home to live in, it is nearly impossible to convince it to leave, so you should just get accustomed to your new permanent guest. If Aitvaras ever leave their house (or, well, the house they chose) and go outside, they will spontaneously turn into dragons, only to resume their rooster form when they re-enter a house.
The Aitvaras love omelets, and will give you grain and coins in exchange. When an Aitvaras is living with you, you’ll never have monetary problems again, as it will hoard money that inexplicably disappears from other households in the vicinity.

So how would DreamWorks' dragons fit in your lore taxonomically?
So the dragons in my book are all based on mythology, and have a diverse selection of body forms. Dreamworks dragons are half based on the HTTYD books and half made up of a plethora of fun animal designs. This means there is also a wide variety of body types and abilities for the dragons.
To slot them into my lore I would have to consider each dragon individually, for example the Night Fury:
For the Night Fury I would make something similar to the smok (Drakon drakon). This is because both these dragons represent an archetype of western dragon; smoki in my book are the ‘four legs and two large wings’ dragon represented on heraldry, night furies are archetypal ‘badass dragon that the main character of a story rides’ and are represented on merchandise.
So the night fury would be in the Drakon genus; rather than orange luminescence they have blue, giving them blue and purple fire. The larger males also have bioluminescent blue markings.
The monstrous nightmare can set itself on fire. In mythology there are many dragons that can set themselves on fire, or have ‘burning tails’ - some of these myths were the inspiration for my aitvaras (Basiliskos lucicaudata), named after the Finnish/Estonian chicken-dragon-fairy-goblin from folklore. These were animals that lived in the home and stole gold and grain from your neighbours and were associated with the devil.
The monstrous nightmare might not be in the Basiliskos (cockatrice and aitvaras) genus or the Vivurnus (wyvern) genus, but will certainly be in that part of the family tree, sharing the aitvaras flaming tail and the general wyvern body plan. In Dreamworks, the wings are armlike, whereas in my book all wings are decorative shoulder fans (dragons fly by magic and glide like kites).
The Hideous Zippleback is a multi-headed dragon. In my book, multi-headed-ness in dragons is an illusion caused by dragons carrying offspring on their shoulders. Pictured here is a hydra or bullar (Hydrus hydrus) with two young on it’s back. The Hideous Zippleback, if it were in my book, would be another Hydrus, and may only have one young on it’s back at a time, allowing it to grow to nearly the same size as it, creating the illusion of 2 heads and 2 tails.
As far as I remember from the film, the Deadly Nadder’s schtick was being spiky. In my book there is a dragon based on French mythology of the tarasque and la velue (Dracotherium histurnum) whose scales are modified into spikes. The deadly nadder would be a close relative who could shed and fling some of these modified scale spikes. Wings, being fancy frills and not proper limbs, can be added to get that lovely blue and yellow contrast!
Obviously I could not include a Dreamworks dragon or a How to Train Your Dragon books dragon in my book because they belong to their own stories and have their own copyright, but to answer your question there are four main families of dragons, and the large swimming dragons (Seadragonus, Leviathorgan, Red Death, Bewilderbeast etc.) would be in the sea dragon family, the wyvernlike dragons and the noodle like dragons (screaming death, timberjack etc) will be in the wyverns-and-wyrms family, the nadders and the furies are placed into the beast-dragon family. Maybe dragons like the Mood Dragon from the books would go into the eastern dragon family.
Basically, each dragon would be treated as a case-by-case basis and added to the family tree based on their closest relative within my world building. My world building involves dragons evolving from fancy magical crocodiles, so converting a Dreamworks dragon would mean making them fancy-magical-crocodile shaped!
Hope this answers your question!

Could you write how would the DF septics react to aitvaras reader? The aitvaras (kite) is a household spirit that brings money and luck or bad luck and cat et houses on fire. It looks like a black rooster with a flaming tail and smoking eyes while in doors and outdoors it looks like a dragon similar to the rooster.
Oooo it’s from Lithuanian mythology! I’m not too familiar with it, so I’ll have to read more about the mythical creatures from that country ^^…….
As you wandered into what seemed to be an abandoned cavern, you shifted from your giant rooster-dragon form and into a small black rooster, your smoky eyes looking around.
Unfortunately you had no control over what forms you took when you’re indoors or outdoors, although you knew how to defend yourself from hungry bears and wolves looking for a snack. Even though you may appear physical, you usually stayed as an untouchable spirit around humans.
Speaking of whom, you had tried to bring good fortune to some of the villagers..only to frighten them into thinking a dragon was going to attack. So you fled to the forest and looked for another place to roam.
And that’s how you stumbled across the cave.
“Hey little guy. How did you get in here?”
Freezing up, you turned around to see a man in front of you. His hair was brown and he seemed to be wearing nothing but a furred and spotted pelt around him. He knelt down in front of you. “Don’t worry, I’m not gonna eat you..but my friends Robbie and Anti might.”
You huffed. “Thank you, human. But..I’ll take care of myself.”
His eyes widened in shock. “Y-You can talk??”
“..I thought the smoking eyes and fiery tail made it obvious I wasn’t an ordinary rooster.” You wiggled your flaming tail, ruffling your feathers.
“O-Oh..okay then. Sorry for assuming,” he chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m not an ordinary human. I’m a selkie…basically I can turn into a seal with this pelt.” He gripped a part of his fur coat. “It’s the only thing that separates me from the folks in town so without it I’m..nothing. Just a naked, depressed dude walking around.”
You nodded in understanding. “Well then, Mr. Selkie, I’m an aitvaras, a nature spirit that brings money and good luck to homes, but if they disrespect me I can always bring them bad luck…..like uh..burning houses down.”
He gawked. “What?? You can burn a whole house down with that fiery little tail?”
“…this is my form when I’m indoors..and by that I mean I turn into this when there’s some kind of roof or ceiling over my head.” You pointed a wing up to the stalactites. “Outside, though, I become a fierce dragon.“
“Woah! That’s awesome!” He grinned. “What does your dragon form-?”
“Chase who are you talking to?”
“Ja, you seem to be having quite zhe talk vith someone.”
You both looked, and you saw a drider and a man with tattered crow wings and bird feet appear around the corner, followed by a man with a mustache who was also dressed in rags and chain, and yet another man with the features of a dog and a demon
“This is an aitvaras!” Chase exclaimed, gesturing to you. “They’re a rooster spirit who can turn into a dragon-!”
“Only outdoors, though.”
“Only outdoors, though!” He corrected himself with a bright smile.
You walked up to the taller creatures and gazed up at them, smiling. “You all seem like quite a unique bunch. I’m from Lithuania so I’m not too familiar with what you guys are supposed to be. Mind if I ask?”
The group simply exchanged glances with one another, wondering who should speak first.

Puuk
Image © Heather Frazier, accessed at her deviantArt here
[One of many familiar-like monsters in Eastern European lore that steal for their masters. My intent with this one was to make an evil equivalent of the pseudodragon from D&D/PFRPG. I don’t remember why I went with this name instead of the more familiar aitvaras.]
Puuk CR 1 NE Dragon A black-scaled wingless dragon the size of a cat creeps forth, a coin-purse clasped in its nimble talons.
Malicious and greedy, the tiny dragons known as puuks seek comfort and riches at any cost. They are expert shapechangers and use their abilities for both mobility and self-defense. Native to pine forests, many puuk are content to live in caves or tree hollows and prey on travelers as bandits do. Wild puuk are usually solitary, as they are distrustful of others of their own kind.
Other puuk, however, have learned that riches flow more freely in cities and have inveigled their way into urban life. An urban puuk offers its services to a humanoid partner, exchanging wealth stolen from the neighborhood for a warm hearth and plenty of food. A puuk will often watch over a town for months disguised in animal form before choosing a partner, gauging what members of a community are the greediest and most likely to condone their larcenous activities. Puuk have little loyalty to their humanoid accomplices and will gladly betray or attack them if their activities fall under suspicion. A neutral evil spell-caster of at least 5th level with the Improved Familiar feat can take a puuk as a familiar, in which case the nasty little dragon remains faithful to its master.
A puuk grows to about two feet long and weighs 10 pounds in draconic form. When assuming an animal shape, they prefer the forms of cats, cockerels or snakes. Puuks prefer to go about their business unnoticed, and will often flee from battle unless cornered or convinced that they will win. In battle, they generally assume their ember form, which grants them both a powerful burning touch and the ability to escape easily should combat turn against them. Puuks are omnivores and have a special fondness for eggs. Puuks and pseudodragons hate one another, and will gladly battle each other to the death should their paths cross.
Kaukas Especially old and cunning puuks, known as kaukas, grow in both physical stature and magical prowess. Capable of assuming the form of gnomes, goblins and other small humanoids, kaukas tend towards more ambitious plots than puuks. For example, a kaukas may be found attached to the household of a nobleman disguised as a servant, or may take over a tribe of kobolds or goblins and lead them to pillage and loot. A kaukas is a puuk with the advanced and giant simple templates. In addition, it may assume the form of up to a Medium-sized animal or a Small humanoid when using change shape. A kaukas is CR 3.

In solid form, a puuk cannot fly or use its fiery touch. In ember form, a puuk can fly and use its fiery touch, but cannot use its bite attack or climb speed. This change in form cannot be dispelled. A puuk reverts to its draconic form when slain. Treasure Scent (Su) This ability works as scent, except that the puuk can only use it to determine the presence of and pinpoint an item or collection of items worth 50 gp or more.

What dragon or dragons do you have in your book that you haven't seen done in other books of this type?
The ‘books of this type’ that I actually have in my flat right now are:
Drake’s Comprehensive Compendium of Dragonology
How to Raise and Keep a Dragon
Dracopedia: The Field Guide
So as this is only 3 books in the fantasy field guide genre, take my answer with a pinch of salt!
Boitata - a serpent from Brazilian mythology, it is nocturnal and eats the eyes of creatures that walk in the daylight so it can steal sunshine and fuel the burning light in it’s own eyes - a sort of will-o-the-whisp legend of lights burning in the dark with the added fear of one’s eyes getting eaten
Guruvilu - A fox-serpent or fox-lizard. To be fair, aside from one shamanic practice for getting rid of these troublesome critters (threaten them with a ceremonial knife!) there isn’t a lot of mythology about these creatures, so it’s fair enough that most books skirt past them.
Stollenwurm - How oh how have so many fantasy field guides avoided the various cat-dragons of Europe? Stollenwurm, tatzelwurm, arrassas...
Underwater Panther - or Mishepishu, its a scaly cat dragon that guards copper mines from Anishinaabe mythology
Cuelebre - Spanish amphithere, captures xanas fairies in the same way other dragons may kidnap princesses, hoards gold.
Gwiber - if an adder drinks milk, it may become a gwiber! Flying serpent from Wales
Jaculus - the javelin snake! Does what it says on the tin; shoots from the trees like a javelin to strike people dead.
Aitvaras - a small house demon which can appear as a cat, chicken, goblin or flame-tailed dragon. Steals gold and grain from your neighbours, which is good for solving short-term poverty but bad for long-term neighbourly relations. Latvia, Estonia, Finland, etc.
Angont - big mean serpent in Canadian mythology - not many stories specifically attributed to it so I understand other fantasy field guides avoiding it. I just like the word ‘angont’ so I made sure to include it.
Azidaja - persian dragons! Their designs are fantastic! West asian dragons are just as awesome as east asian dragons and need more love!
Makara - honestly this can be interpreted as a dragon or as a different sort of chimeric beast depending on taste. Sometimes an elephant/serpent thing, sometimes a deer/fish thing, sometimes a chubby lil crocodile - it’s a divine beast for Indian deities to ride on.
Bakunawa - a serpent that eats the moon in Philippine mythology. I think she’s super cool.
Tizheruk - Inuit serpent or seal monster
Taniwha - New Zealand dragon, and honestly the New Zealand online encyclopedia (Te Ara) has so much info on taniwha, I wish more people talked about them. Really cool dragons.
Mo’o - a black shape-shifting dragon from Hawaii, sometimes a giant lake monster, sometimes a small lizard, sometimes a beautiful maiden.
I may not actually have read other fantasy field guides including these dragons, I hope there are some out there. If not, then I am proud Dracones Mundi is the first to put these dragons forth!
(also for some I took liberties; there is no other field guide that talks specifically about la velue, but I took tarasque as a token ‘weird french dragon’, for example. The above list are ‘dragons which definitely do not appear in any form in the 3 books I happen to have in my flat’)
Thanks for the question!

Meet the Dragons of Mythika.
Meet the Dragons of Mythika.
In these upcoming weeks I’m going to post all the main-groups of creatures from Mythika in the group they belong to, with all the information about them I have made up so far. NOTE that this about the creatures in Mythika and they change a lot with the real mythology, mostly their appearance is the same, but the abilities and behavior is changed. I keep saying this to avoid complications.
Group five are the powerful Dragons, together with the Deities and Titans the oldest inhabitants of Mythika. Dragons are ancient beings, mostly wise and large and very magical and powerful at the same time. Though Dragons come in all sizes imaginable from the enormous Zirnitra to the very tiny Pyrausta. Most dragons have a form of breath-weapon that sets them apart from the other dragons, but there are also lesser dragons (known as drakes) that lack a breath attack, Basilisks are an example for this.
Most other creatures avoid dragons as they fear them, others hunt dragon eggs, and Ichneumon even feed primarily on dragon eggs and hearts, so dragons of all species fear them.
Aitvaras (Lithuanian) – Dragon / Shifter - Magical dragons bred from the eggs of ordinary chickens, Aitvaras appear as monstrous black roosters with burning tails indoors and as cockatrice-like abominations outdoors. - An Aitvaras appearance and size is always adopted to the environment it is currently in, falling in a river will grant this strange drake fins for swimming for example. - These enigmatic dragons can control the luck of other creatures, giving it an amount of good fortune or making a creatures life miserable with despair and ill omen. - When creatures meet the gaze of an Aitvaras, there is a chance the victim will be engulfed in cursed flames. - Being bitten by these creatures will curse the victim, it now takes more damage from heat and fire based damage and magic. - Aitvaras often serve powerful Hags (like Baba Yaga) as pets and familiars, Hags enjoy the Aitvaras cruel nature.
Amhuluk (Native American) – Dragon / Shifter - Very magical dragons which look like Asian Dragons or Sea Serpents with four small limbs sticking out of their snake-like bodies, two large antler-like horns grow from their dragon heads and their beautiful scales change color faster than the eye can blink, but always ranging between, gold, black red and green. - Amhuluk corrupt the lakes in which they settle, turning the waters into an mutant goo which looks like ordinary liquid, but which mutates any creature that drinks from it or which baths into it. - Creatures turned into new mutant forms will always serve the Amhuluk as it is their master, their entire memory is wiped from their brains. - The Amhuluk’s breath-weapon is a multi-colored mist which creates horrid mutations into everything it touches, even plants are not safe from this effect. - Plants around the lake of the Amhuluk have bizarre forms and colors, this mutant landscape is often the first sign you are dealing with an Amhuluk. - Many creatures and chimerae, such as the Ahuizotl, are believed to be the creations of the Amhuluk, but this hasn’t been proven. - All types of chimerae are immune to the effects of the Amhuluk, this adds to the belief they are actually it’s creations. - Non aquatic creatures that are changed by the lakes mutating magic will roam the river’s edge and protect the Amhuluk like a pack of wild dogs, they will often change victims into the lake, so more guards/slaves are created. - While their own bodies are immune to the morphing effects of their waters, they can still shift their own bodies in horrid ways, growing random horns, spikes and other bizarre features on their bodies as they please.
Asdeev (Persian) – Dragon / Shifter - Beautiful but vile dragons with a pure white pelt of fur mixed with reptilian scales that almost look like diamonds, it has a long mane of pearly hair on its head, growing all the way to the tip of their tails, mist follows them around at all times. - All Asdeev are female and they breed with the black dragons known as Zirnitra to produce offspring, they always lay two eggs, one black and one white. - Asdeev are dragons of mist, cold and crystals, their breath-weapon will release a thick mist of utter cold upon its victims and enemies. - These mysterious dragons often stalk their prey for days before they finally kill them, they can stalk prey in the form of pure mist. - For dragon standards the Asdeev is a pretty whimsy creature, they are slow to attack without knowing the weakness of their victims first. - They are hard to hit with melee weapons as they can turn their bodies into mist, even parts of their bodies which are targeted with the weapon. - Asdeev love mountain caves and are mostly found on snowy mountain tops in the deepest caves, surrounded by all types of crystals which they crave. - When killed the Asdeev will first turn into a statue of pure icy crystal, then it will explode into a nova of sharp crystals which pierce everyone that didn’t find cover. - Young Asdeev are known as Fog Drakes, they look like white, hairy wyverns and they use their mist abilities to hunt, covering parties or caravans in a thick layer of mist and attacking them one by one in assaults from cover.
Basilisk (M-European) – Dragon / Reptilian - A weaker variant of wingless drake, these six legged monstrous reptilians can appear in any type of environment, from high mountains to arid deserts and swamps. - It’s gaze is lethal to most other living creatures, it contains a powerful poison which saps the strength and will of a victim, their fangs and claws are coated with the same poison. - Because of their six magical legs the basilisk can easily climb through any type of environment, for some reason they can even walk over water without sinking in it, skinning a Basilisk and using their skin in the creation of special shoes will create Water-Walking shoes which are sold for high prizes on the Black Market. - Basilisks are the most common prey of the dragon-killing Ichneumon, which are also immune to their poison, Basilisk seldom flee, but in these encounters they mostly seek shelter on water where the Ichneumon cannot follow. - Basilisks can grow to the size of a horse, but the biggest varieties are hunted and trained by Vish Kanya, which prize the creatures for their strength and poison.
Xhumpedzkin (Mayan) – Dragon / Reptilian - A variant of the Basilisk, the Xhumpedzkin is a giant six-legged Gila Monster, with purple/pink and black banded stripes. - Unlike the Basilisk, which can live anywhere, the Xhumpedzkin only inhabits deep jungles and underground caves. - The gaze, claws, aura and fangs of these creatures possess a dangerous psychic toxic which causes extreme headaches and migraine attacks, some of which are deadly. - They also have a stinger on the end of their tails, they can sting a creatures shadow with it, the headache that follows is so severe than the creature can lose its sanity for a few hours. - Their name means “brief time” and that is all you get when you encounter such a horror. - These oversized reptilians feed on psychic stress, which they mostly find in the brains of their victims, first turning the prey crazy with headaches and then feeding on their brains is their preferred tactic. - Xhumpedzkin are one of the rare psychic creatures in Mythika.
Whowie (Australian) – Dragon / Reptilian - A very large variety of Basilisk, looking somewhat like a six legged mixture of Frilled Lizard and Monitor Lizard, these creatures mostly appear in deep caves and desert landscapes. - The fangs, claws and gaze of these creatures induce a deep fear into the minds of their victims, everything that gazes into their big eyes will be overwhelmed by primal fear. - Whowie use their large frills located around their necks, to add to their already powerful fear abilities, they mostly use it against group of attackers or bigger creatures that want to turn the Whowie into their food. - Desert dwelling Intulo sometimes befriend Whowie and ride them into battle, but some Whowie view Intulo as any other humanoid prey.
Codrille (French) – Dragon - Probably one of the more feared dragon species in Mythika, these diseased horrors spread plague and illness wherever they go. - These look like sickly colored green dragons with big crests underneath their throat, many creatures confuse them with undead dragons, as they look as if they died on some horrid dragon disease. - Their breath weapon is a cloud of flies which will carry diseases of all types with them, inflicting it on everyone within reach, the flies die within a few minutes after being released though. - Young Codrilles are known as Blight Drakes, they look like winged Basilisks, the diseases they spread are weaker, but still fatal. - Codrille are among the favorite pets of the Horseman of Pestilence, and he is probably responsible for their vile creation. - The Horseman of Pestilence rides the most ancient and powerful Codrille into battle, this Codrille is known as Taniniver. - These dragons only feed on diseases flesh, letting it rot in horrid pits or caves filled with decay and death.
Azi Sruvara (Persian) – Dragon - A more powerful variant of the Codrille, instead of diseases these yellow, horned dragons spread the most potent of venom known to the world of Mythika. - Their drool, blood and corpse will spawn all types of venomous snakes and even Seps into the area. - All types of venomous creatures will follow a Sruvara as its aura makes their own venom more potent. - Even Undead, Spirits, Elementals and Vish Kanya aren’t immune to the venom/poison of these Yellow Dragons, and it is so potent that it creates rust on metal and other constructs. - Azi Sruvara are the most poisonous and venomous creatures in the history of Mythika, nothing can beat their venom. - These creatures are found everywhere, but mostly live in Deserts, some deserts were even created by their own venom and powers. - Azi Sruvara love to poison rivers and lakes, and nothing else can amuse them more than seeing a creature die by the effect of poison. - Its breath-weapon is a cone of yellowish gas which kills everything that comes in contact with it, it turns most metal to rust instantly, Sruvara rarely use their breath weapons though, they are confident enough to think they don’t need such a weapon to beat their prey.
Haietlik (Native American) – Dragon / Sea Serpent - An evil sea serpent with a very typical spear-like head, its blue and black scales crackle with electric sparks and lightning. - These very aggressive sea serpents can grow to enormous lengths, but most of them die younger because they challenge every creature they come across. - Their heads are a bony growth shaped in the form of the tip of a spear, when they attack their enemies they turn themselves into living spears covered by lightning, shocking and piercing their prey at the same time. - They can breathe lightning at their enemies, but rarely choose to do so, as they are more into melee combat, they only use this weapon if the combat goes against them. - Haietlik are proud creatures and never flee combat, they rather die in combat that being known as a coward or weakling. - These cruel serpents enjoy catching large flying creatures by piercing them from below, they can make enormous leaps from the water, their favorite prey are Marlin, humanoids and avians of all types.
Hydra (Greek) – Dragon / Reptilian - Starting out with six heads, these wingless dragon-like reptilians are able to generate two lost heads for every head that is cut off. - Hydra’s appear like big sauropod dinosaurs, but unlike those big herbivores the Hydra only feed on flesh, and their many heads enjoy tearing other creatures apart. - The maximum heads a Hydra can gain is unknown, but specimens with over heads are reported. - These creatures have extreme regeneration abilities, most non-magical damage is regenerated instantly, and only fire and acid magic and abilities are very effective against them. - Hydra’s are often used by Vish Kanya as guard beasts, they guard the towns of Vish Kanya, these Hydra’s often have many heads from their battles with the Vish Kanya. - While the Hydra’s have a poisonous bite, the poison doesn’t have any special effects. It is still very deadly though. - They are most often encountered in swamps or jungles, but some freshwater lakes also house them.
Orochi (Japanese) – Dragon - A very dangerous variant of Hydra, each of the eight heads of this monstrous dragon holds its own magical venom. - While more powerful than any Hydra, the Orochi can only have eight heads, when cut off they don’t grow back, non-fatal wounds are regenerated just like with their Hydra cousins. - They also have a sauropod-like body, but more feral, with large spikes growing over their backs and a tail that ends in eight tentacles. - As each head has its own poison, each has its own horrid effect, the green head has the same poison as the Hydra, which adds nothing special. - The red head has a very horrid poison, this poison is similar of that of the Haemorrhois, it forces all the blood out of a body and re-opens all old scars. - The orange head will set the victim aflame, burning them from the inside, this is a very cruel and slow death. - The blue head has a very cold poison which turns the victim into an icy statue from the inside out. - The purple head’s poison will inflate the victim’s body until they explode into a carnage of viscera, blood and bones. - The yellow head has a very odd poison which will create extreme thirst in its victims, some victims become so desperate for liquid to drink, they slash their own wrists and drink their own blood as a result. - The white head will release a terrible poison upon its victims which will devour the victim from the inside out, much like an extremely nasty variant of gangrene. - The last head is black and its poison is said to turn a victim extremely hostile and aggressive, the victim often kills itself by accident in the wild rage that follows. - These creatures are also known as Chaos Hydra’s, and indeed the Chaos Deity Hundun is behind their creation, he took Hydra’s and infused them with chaotic energy.
Nidhogg (Norse) – Dragon - Wingless ancient dragons which mostly live underground, burrowing their way through the soil to feast on giant insects and the roots of giant trees. - These monstrous dragons rarely come to the surface, but when they do they cause chaos and destruction to any village unlucky enough to be in its way. - Nidhogg lack a breath weapon, but their magical abilities over roots, plants and earths are formidable enough to adjust that. - These earth dragons are seldom seen in their full form, they mostly dig only half their body through the soil and command the roots and earth to constrict and hold their prey so they teeth and claws can finish them. - Their bodies are half flesh and half wood, some scholars believe they are actual plants, but this is false, Nidhogg are among the eldest of dragons. - The World Tree Yggdrasil, which roots cover the entire world of Mythika, and which hold the world together, are mostly targeted by the Nidhogg, because of this most other creatures kill Nidhogg’s on sight when they get the chance, they are especially hated by Fae of all types.
Pyrausta (Cyprus) – Dragon / Vermin - The smallest and weakest of all dragons, they look like mixes of insects and very small dragons, they are almost cute, but their behavior is much like their much bigger cousins very harsh and arrogant. - In the game there are two types of Pyrausta, the first are the most common Pyrausta which combine the features of very small green dragons with those of dragonflies, they mostly feed on vermin, but they also love to trick and annoy humanoids with their dangerous pranks. - Another type of Pyrausta combine the features of multi-colored tiny dragons with those of moths and butterflies. - Butterfly Pyrausta are mostly gentle creatures, though a bit vain, the Moth Pyrausta are poisonous and nasty creatures which love to see other creatures choke on their dust-like poison. - Because so many other creatures prey on Pyrausta they became very defensive, attacking everything before the enemy can attack them. - Pyrausta are often found in beautiful fae forests, playing among the evil, neutral and good natured faeries and other fae, many royal Elves and fae creatures use Pyrausta as familiars and friends. - The breath-attack of a Pyrausta is a cone of glittering dust which causes temporary blindness and an itching feeling to the skin.
Scytalis (M-European) – Dragon / Reptilian - Extremely beautiful and deadly at the same time, the Scytalis is probably the most beautiful and colorful creature alive, they look like giant cobra-like serpents with a dragon-like head, multiple cobra-like frills grow from its body. - Their beautiful scales glow and glitter with all the colors of the rainbow, changing color in every direction you look at them, as if beautiful fire burns from inside of them. - It uses its dazzling scales to bewitch its prey, making curious creatures come to it in admiration and becoming easy snacks for the dragon. - Such beauty can’t be alive without sacrifice however, and the environment these creatures live in often turns ugly and devoid of color as the dragons absorb color away from living creatures and the environment, turning it into a grey wasteland devoid of joy and color, while the Scytalis becomes more beautiful in the progress. - The environment will eventually regain its colors after a few days. - Narcissus, the Sinlord of Pride loves the colors of the Scytalis and he keeps many of these monsters as pets and guardians. - These snake-like dragons have a breath-weapon which is also very bright and colorful, it confuses any creature that is caught within it. Confused creatures have a chance to attack their own allies and behave very randomly. - The poison of an Scytalis will control any creature weaker than itself for a few hours, so these dragons often are found with other creatures which function as bodyguards.
Tiamat (Mesopotamian) – Dragon - The dragons of chaos, these two headed purple dragons have all types of chaotic features growing from their bodies, like multiple eyes, tentacles and spikes. They look much like two headed versions of this dragon: https://78.media.tumblr.com/90eb0218669752a0d239f6e4765202c4/tumblr_o8b5bnwy7u1v9qvuco1_540.jpg - These creatures come straight from the chaotic parts of the Abyss, and inside their bodies reside portals to the abyss, they can spit out minor demons from these portals which serve them or which bring chaos on the battlefields they roam. - Every creature that is bitten by one of the two heads of these female dragons is transformed into a demon over time, if not stopped in time they become a full demon. Tiamat see all other demons as their children. - The chaos aura’s of these dragons heal demons from their wounds and give demons of all types more strength and speed. - These demonic dragons are also known as Ajatar, Entropic Wyrms and they are named after the first female dragon Tiamat. - Tiamat bring chaos to any world they visit, they are among the most powerful of dragons and few creatures have the power to destroy them. - These dragons serve Hundun the Lord of Chaos, and his will is their command, in his human forms Hundun often rides a Tiamat or Azi Dahaka. - When slain the Tiamat will implode and a portal will be spawned from its body, from which pour a lot of angry demons of all types. - The breath-weapon of a Tiamat is a chaotic gas which has lots of random effects on its victims. - Creatures swallowed whole by the Tiamat will end up in the middle of the Abyss, as they are teleported through the inner portal of the Tiamat.
Azi Dahaka (Persian) – Dragon - The male variant of the Tiamat, these look pretty much the same as the Tiamat but their scales are dark blue, black and yellow, and instead of two heads the Dahaka has three heads. - When killed the Azi Dahaka will explode and spawn an enormous swarm of monstrous lizards upon the battlefield, when this creature’s blood touches the earth the same lizards are born. - Only the middle head of this dragon can breathe chaotic gas upon its enemies, the other two heads can only attack with melee bite attacks. - This dragon is almost impossible to kill, and is the most powerful of the non-unique dragons. - From the inner portal the Azi Dahaka can summon all types of evil creatures, mostly demons but also more powerful evils and other dragons. - These chaotic dragons often serve as leaders in demonic armies, their aura’s give demons more morale and power.
Wyvern (M-European) – Dragon - Almost non-intelligent drakes which lack arms and instead have two large wings, a snake-like neck and two legs much like a reptilian bird of prey. - Wyverns are large, but they are often targeted by bigger predators. - Wyverns always feed on female flesh, they mostly ignore male enemies and target the females first, male flesh is poisonous to them. - They love swamps, forests and mountains, and are most often found there.
Vouivre (French) – Dragon - The female variant of the Wyvern, these have a beautiful and strange red ruby-like crystal placed upon their heads, and a vile poisonous stinger on the end of their long tails. - Vouivre only feed on male creatures, female flesh is poisonous to them, they often kill female creatures by stinging them with their tail stingers. - Unlike their male Wyvern counterparts, the Vouivre is very intelligent and uses her ruby crystal to lure men to their doom, they can also mimic the voice of a female human. - Vouivre live in and around lakes and rivers, washing their beautiful ruby gem every hour as they are very proud on it. - Whenever someone kills the Vouivre and takes it gem, they become very greedy and rich, fortune (with winning and gaining treasures) shines upon them. If other people see this gem however they try to steal it at all cost.
Cuelebre (Spanish) – Dragon - Whenever a Wyvern survives for 1000 years they transform into a iron cocoon and hatch a few years later as fully grown Cuelebre, only male Wyverns can undergo this transformation. - The scales of a Cuelebre are metallic and very powerful, each year they harden until they eventually turn into indestructible adamantine. - Cuelebre are also intelligent like Vouivre, and they are known to give their services as flying mounts to other evil creatures, a very powerful adamantine Cuelebre functions as the flying mount of the Horseman of War. - While they don’t have a poisonous stinger, the Cuelebre can use their tail as iron spear. - Only adamantine weapons and some powerful magic spells can hurt an adamantine Cuelebre so they are very arrogant and confident creatures in battle, attacking first and thinking strategies as the enemies are already dead. - Dactyl love the scales of these dragons, as they can make many good weapons from it and Adamantine is a very rare metal.
Zirnitra (Slavic) – Dragon / Shifter - The black dragons of magic, darkness, shadow and corruption, their black and purple scales are perfect for hiding in darkness, scheming and plotting against the world around them. - Zirnitra are the male counterparts of Asdeev, though they are a very different dragon species all together, they can only breed with the female white Asdeev. - The juvenile Zirnitra are known as Gloom Drakes or Umbral Drakes and while their abilities aren’t that powerful yet they use the shadows as cover and often plot with Bauk, Nalusa Falaya or Brollachan against the villages which border their environments. - The breath-weapon of the Zirnitra is a creeping, almost living liquid darkness which disables any vision and which attacks any source of light until only darkness remains. It does negative energy damage and gives the Zirnitra lots of benefits in battle as its enemies become blinded and weak. - Zirnitra serve the Queen of Magic Hecate, they are the only male creatures that gained Hecate’s trust, she learned a lot of darkness spells from the Zirnitra. - While Zirnitra control lots of spells, they are experts in darkness and shadow magic, all spells from this group are under their control, they can summon darkness, animate shadows, become invisible in shadow, destroy light and do a lot more.
The Dragon Bosses will be posted another day: Bakunawa, Balaur, Fafnir, Gaasyendietha, Kampe, Ladon and Vritra
The next group (probably the Undead) will be posted in smaller groups, otherwise the post will be too long.

Happy Dracones Monday, I am going to add some more context to this post: the glowtail is the cousin of the cockatrice, but has noticably different colouration and a bioluminescent tail. The scales are black, and the wings are often also black but may have a speckled pattern like stars on them.
I based the design on two different types of dragon in mythology: the first being 'a dragon with a flaming tail', a medieval euphemism for seeing comets/shooting stars in the sky. The second is a small house spirit dragon, which has a few different versions in Europe, many taking the form of a cockerel with a burning tail, which is why I made my glowtail dragons close relatives of the cockatrice, which are also cockerel mimics!
As they evolved to have a vaguely similar appearance to the red jungle fowl (close wild relative of domestic chicken) I put this dragon's natural home range in Indonesia, although they spread across the world alongside domestic chickens. The main subspecies of glowtail are:
Gandaspati (Javan glowtail)
Aitvaras or Pukis (Baltic glowtail)
Eldkvast (Nordic glowtail)
Glühschwanz (Western glowtail)
Happy Dracones Monday! Today's dragon is the glowtail!
For a new dragon every monday follow @draconesmundi

THE ELEMENTS OF MYTHIKA
Elements always have a big role in roleplaying games, or in any type of game for that matter.
In these coming weeks I’m gonna collect all the monsters from Mythika that have a link to one of the six elements, starting out with the most popular element of fire, I will continue the path with Air – Earth – Water – Shadow – Light
Fire, Smoke, Steam, Magma and Heat are all connected with the element of fire, while Steam combines water with fire, magma combines fire with earth and smoke combines air with fire. In Mythika solar rays are fire mixed with light and unholy black fire is a mixture of shadow/darkness and normal fire, and while unholy fire burns like any other fire, the pain is even more intense and can only be healed by holy spells.
Now for all the Enemies and Bosses from Mythika that have links with-and powers over fire, heat, magma, smoke and steam.
NOTE that there are probably other creatures in mythika that have powers over fire in the REAL Myth or Legend, but which I don’t think suit the creatures at all, two I can think of are Khalkotauroi and Pukwudgie, but in Mythika they don’t have any fire abilities, Khalkotauroi are much like D&D’s Gorgon’s and Pukwudgie have powers over voodoo and necromancy, and they can’t throw fireballs of any kind.
VERY STRONG EFFIGY TO FIRE ELEMENT:
Cacus – Giants of fire and smoke, these giant humanoids are immune to fire, use it to create their magical weapons in their hellish forges, they can set their armor and weapon on fire with a simple thought.
Candileja – Sometimes when a Hag or Witch is burned a Candileja is born out of pure fiery hatred, they look like a vague spectral version of their former self but made entirely from vile green flames. Candileja use their unholy fire to create painful burns in their victims, being spectral and on fire has many advantages in battles. Candileja can also curse a victim so they take more damage from any other fire attack.
Cherufe – Being magma elementals, the volcanic Cherufe have command over both fire and earth, eruptions and earthquakes are their specialty. They are naturally immune to heat, fire and magma and can shape into any object or form they desire.
Curupira – The Gnomes of Fire, these pyromaniacs are normally not very evil, until they spot a flame, then their insanity takes over and they want to spread the flames, their bright red hair turns into fire the moment they spot a flame. They can control and animate fire, but on a much lower level than the Ifrit can. Fire seems to come to life when a Curupira is near, this is called Pyrotechnics. When there is no fire around the Curupira are powerless as they can’t create fire themselves.
Enenra – Creatures of vengeance and smothering smoke the Enenra are natural half-fire and half air elementals. They can control smoke and enter their victims lungs to choke them from within. Their ash and smoke forms also burn the skin of other creatures that are trapped within them.
Gaasyendietha – The fire dragons of Mythika, these meteor alien dragons can breathe unnatural fire upon their enemies, even creatures otherwise immune to normal fire will get burned. They can summon small swarms of burning rocks from the sky as well and they are fully immune to any form of heat and fire.
Ifrit – The true lords of everything fiery, all genies are masters of their own element. Ifrit command fire with their mind, summoning giant beasts and monsters made entirely from fire. They create giant swords and hammers made from fire out of thin air and control most other creatures based on fire. Their favorite fire elementals to summon are giant bats and lions made from flames and heat.
Muscaliet – Very little chimerae with features of squirrels, badgers and the tusks of a boar. Muscaliet are small but very dangerous as their bodies are very hot, this often leads to forest fires and awe full burning wounds on any creatures they touch. Given time these small pests will burn through any metal, so trapping them inside iron cages can be tricky.
Salamander – These Dimetrodon-like salamanders of heat and cold control the temperature around them, turning the landscape around them very frigid cold by absorbing all heat or extremely hot by expelling the heat they absorbed. They are immune to most forms of fire and can even swim in lava.
Basan – These terror birds are magical offspring of the Tuyango with burning qualities. Their fire is special as it burns even spectral creatures and ghosts. They can spit out their ghostly blue flames at their enemies, burning not their flesh but their very souls.
Ziburinis – The most evil of Fire Elementals is the undead fire elemental called Ziburinis, created from the souls of burned humans these black and red flames love to enter the bodies of other creatures and possess them for as long as they can, then their own hatred burns itself out of the host and leaves behind nothing more than cursed ashes. Being burned from the inside out by these horrors is said to be the most painful death of all.
Surtr – The Titan of Fire, his abilities are pretty much advanced version of his minions the Cacus. Surtr is an unique boss creature, and he’s the boss of the fire temple, you fight him together with a Cacus giant and a Ifrit summoner.
STRONG EFFIGY TO FIRE ELEMENT:
Butatsch – These abominable and alien oozes are covered in hungry mouths and fake eyes, from these eyes they can shoot rays of superheated liquid, the creatures seem to be full with this burning liquid.
Chimera – Chimera burn with fire from within, one of their two heads can breath fire and the poison from their snake-tail head also burns their prey from within. When you kill one of these Chimeric horrors they explode into a swarm of fiery fireballs, burning everything foolish to slay one of these with melee weapons.
Delgeth – The Anaye closely related to fire, their powerful hooves will leave a trail of burning cinders and fire whenever they go.
Garm – The bites of these hellhounds are hotter than hell itself.
Cerberus – The bites of these three-headed hounds of hell are even worse than those of the smaller Garm. The burning pain won’t go away without very powerful magic.
Kasha – Kasha use their nine fiery souls/lives to animate the corpses collected in their small burning chariot, the result are burning zombies that follow every command from the Kasha that animated them with Its own soul, when destroyed the Kasha regains its soul and can animate a new fiery corpse if there is one.
Pyrausta – While these insect drakes can’t breathe fire themselves, they must feed on fire every week to stay alive. Their heart is like a small little ember.
Wanyudo – These strange demonic constructs of torture and pain look like wheels with the head of a demonic monster forged upon it, they can set their wheel on fire with a thought, so being crushed by them means both your bones and skin is harmed.
Alastor – The Sinlord of Wrath has a close effigy with fire, his weapons are always on fire and he can summon powerful fireballs from his hands, he can also create walls of fire to block the escape route of his victims. Alastor is a Boss.
Hel – This Goddess boss has both control of ice and fire, half her body controls fire and the other half controls the cold and ice. Hell is Boss.
Horseman of War – Like Famine is closely related to water, death to earth and pestilence to air so is War related to burning angry fires of war. The Horseman of War is a boss.
MINOR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ELEMENT OF FIRE:
Aatxe – Aatxe are big spiritual bulls that burn with the fire of pure vengeance, they burn their victims by running through them.
Ahkiyyini – When these ogre-sized skeletons play their infernal war-drums or violins, nature around it goes berserk, all elements (including fire and magma) seems to come alive and attack the enemies of the musical skeletal horror.
Aitvaras – The gaze of these cockatrice-like drakes not only curses the victim with despair and misfortune, but it also has a chance to combust a victim in flames. Their tail and rooster-crown are both made from fire as well.
Brobinyak – These dragon ogres look like big lizardmen with dragon wings and faces, they can breathe out fire.
Cucay – Their pumpkin faces burn with sinister flames which they can shoot at their prey in the form of a fireball.
Dragon Turtle – These oversized dragonic turtles can breathe out hot steam at their victims.
Empusa – Instead of hair these insect-ladies with the legs and arms of a mantis have green fire burning on top of their heads.
Gloson – These undead razor-pigs can breathe out fire from their nostrils.
Kurage-No-Hinotama – Some variants of these land-based hovering jellyfish monsters are on fire, their poisonous tentacles burn everything trapped within them.
Lampad – Their torches burn with purple fire which causes madness and sadness in their victims. Otherwise these underground shadow nymphs have much more in common with Shadow Elements.
Marool – These deep-sea angler-fish horrors can summon will-o-wisp like eyes from their bodies to lure ships and sailors to their doom, their back is always on fire but they cannot do anything with that in combat.
Poludnica – While more connected with the Light Element (which I post later) these harvest, fire, sun and heatstroke nymphs have a burned face and the solar rays they summons are also very hot and burn the skin of their victims.
Stella – The poison of this starfish horror burns the veins from within their prey, burning them from within.
Decarabia – Same as Stella, but a much bigger crown-of-thorns starfish and worse poison effect.
Tlanusi – These oversized leech horrors can turn the water around them very hot and shoot hot geysers at their prey.
Zmey – One of the three heads of this sin-dragon is immune to fire and can breath out fire.
Balaur – Only one of the seven sin-riddled heads of the Balaur can shoot fire, the others breath out other elements and curses. Each of Balaurs seven heads resembles its own sin.
Andras – The only thing this raven-headed, wolf-riding right hand of Alastor has in common with fire is its fire sword. Andras is Boss.
Arzshenk – This demonic minotaur Div is immune to fire and heat. Arzshenk is a Boss.

MYTHIKA’S ENVIRONMENTS
Where do all the creatures in Mythika live? In what kind of environment are they encountered most? Of course some of these monsters appear on multiple environments (like Bakunawa can be found both in Oceans and in Deep Oceans) but I put every monster with their most common and logical environment.
This list can be handy if you making your own game/world and you need mythological/cryptid/fantasy monsters for your environments!
Sorry for not putting the monsters in alphabetical order, but they are in species-order from:
Ooze -> Dragon -> Humanoid -> Beast -> Chimerae -> Aberration -> Fae -> Construct -> Undead -> Demon -> Plant -> Giant -> Vermin -> Titan -> Elemental -> Angel
Not every environment has its own species though, so it may appear a bit messy.
Let us start
==============================================================
OCEANS
Cirein Croin / Dragon Turtle / Haietlik / Jormungandr / Adaro / Zitiron / Telchine / Akheilos / Caspilly / Echeneis / Gambo / Hippocampus / Ketos / Ziphius / Kun Peng / Charybdis / Lusca / Punga / Scylla / Each Uisge / Caleuche / Bakekujira / Draugr / Isonade / Ghawwas / Umibozu
Each Uisge are the Kelpies of the oceans, they are far more vile though and often hide themselves among the sea-weed forests to stalk prey, they control sea plants and use them to pull sailors from ships.
==============================================================
DEEP OCEAN
Bakunawa / Siyokoy / Leviathan / Marool / Iku-Turso / Kraken / Sazae-Oni / Con Rit / Shen / Muldjewangk
Looking like enormous clam shells, the Shen are powerful casters of realistic illusions, they use these illusions to lure prey into their gaping maws or to scare bigger predators away, often weaving the illusions of powerful dragons to help them with it.
==============================================================
COASTAL and BEACH
Harpy / Taniwha / Lorelei / Shellycoat / Pua Tu Tahi / Ahkiyyini / Cyclops / Heikegani / Karkinos / Stella / Planctae / Symplegades
Planctae are bizarre Rock Elementals that hide themselves among normal rocks to stalk prey, the related, much more powerful Symplegades are always encountered in pairs, they crush other creatures between the two of them and then feast on the bloody remains.

@NOTE: All pictures found on GOOGLE PICTURES, not my own work, and mostly here to give an impression of what the creatures COULD look like.
If you see your own artwork and want it removed, just PM me about and I instantly remove it.
@NOTE 2: While all these creatures come from mythology, I gave my own spin to these creatures, many of these creatures don’t have the powers and abilities I gave them. Afanc for example aren’t intelligent in the real myth, they are dumb creatures that just look like beavers but they don’t do anything with their beaver features at all, in my project I give the creatures powers, abilities and looks I think fit the monster more.
