Camping (part 2)- Radioapple- Fluff, angst- Human AU, Teenager AU- Warnings: Child abuse, religious trauma, almost drowning
Lucifer sat on the log by the river, waiting for Alastor. It wasnt long before his friend showed up.
“Lucifer! Come on, I wanna show you something!” Alastor called out, grabbing Lucifer's arm as he ran by, pulling Lucifer along.
“AH! O-Okay! I'm coming!” Lucifer yelped. He tried his best to keep up with Alastor, but he wasn't much of a runner.
“Come on, hurry up!” Alastor called over his shoulder, leaping over a fallen tree. He turned to Lucifer. “We're gonna miss it!”
Lucifer paused to catch his breath. “I-I'm trying!” He yelled back. “Your legs are longer than mine!” He continued running.
When Lucifer finally caught up to Alastor, the burnette held an arm out to stop him from running. “Shh!” He held a finger over his mouth.
Lucifer nodded.
Alastor quietly walked to a bundle if bushes and crouched behind them. He gestured for Lucifer to come next to him.
Lucifer quietly tip-toed over and got on his knees next to Alastor. “What?” He whispered.
Alastor held his finger over his mouth again. He pointed to the other side of the bush.
Lucifer looked up over the Bush and gasped quietly.
A small family of deer grazed on the grass. There was a doe, with a little fawn standing beside her, and a buck.
“Whoa,” Lucifer said, almost silently.
Alastor pointed at the river next to the deer, where a family of ducks was getting out of the water.
Lucifer gasped. He stared at the ducks in awe. He held his hand over his mouth to keep himself from squealing and scaring the animals away.
The mother duck waddled past the deer, her little ducklings chirping and waddling close behind her.
Lucifer shook his hands to get the energy out and prevent himself from exploding. He absolutely loved ducks. He accidentally let out a giggle when one of the ducklings tripped over its own two feet.
The giggle made the deer family stop grazing and freeze, noticing the boys and staring at them before running off.
“Aww no!” Lucifer stood up. “Dang it, Lucifer!” He banged his fist against his head. “You always ruin everything!” He scolded himself.
Alastor stood up. “Hey, it's fine!” He put a hand on Lucifer's shoulder.
Lucifer flinched at the touch on his shoulder. On reflex, he jumped away and held his arms up over his face. “Sorry!” He whimpered.
Alastor flinched. He held his hands up and stepped back.
Lucifer stared at him. He slowly lowered his arms and took some deep breaths. “Ah… s-sorry… um… instinct… I guess…” he fidgeted with his hands. He looked away, feeling embarrassed and ashamed.
Alastor stepped forward again. “It’s okay,” he said. “Um… are you okay?” He asked.
Lucifer blinked. “Uh,” he shrugged. “I'm okay,” he said, not sounding confident.
“Are you sure..?” Alastor seemed concerned. “You acted like I was going to hurt you,”
“Isn't that what you wanted to do?” Lucifer asked, tilting his head.
“What? No!” Alastor stepped closer. “Lucifer, why would I want to hurt you?”
“Because I scared the animals away,” Lucifer said, pointing to where the deer used to be. “I messed up,” he shrugged and looked at the grass. “I always get punished for messing up,”
Alastor grew more concerned. “What?”
“Father always hits me for making mistakes,” Lucifer said. He acted like this was normal. And for him, it was the norm. “It teaches me to be better,”
“Lucifer…” Alastor shook his head. “This sounds like abuse,”
Lucifer tilted his head and raised an eyebrow. “No..?” He muttered. “If Father was abusive, He would hurt me whether I messed up or not. But he doesn't. He only hits me when I'm being bad and messing up. The rest of the time he ignores me,” he explained.
Alastor blinked at him. “Lucifer, that is abuse,”
Lucifer's eyebrows furrowed. “No its not,”
“Neglect is a type of abuse, Lucifer!” Alastor tried to explain. “Does he treat you nicely? Ever?”
“He took me and my brothers camping. That's nice, isn't it?” Lucifer shrugged.
“Other than taking you camping, has he ever been nice? Ever been an actual father?” Alastor pushed his glasses up.
Lucifer thought about it. “Um…” he tried to think of a time. When had his father been nice to him? When was he not ignored or being beaten by his dad?
“See, Lucifer? You can't think of a time! He's not a good dad to you, Lucifer,” Alastor took Lucifer's hands into his. “You need to tell someone,”
Lucifer pulled his hands away. He shook his head. “No… No, you're lying…” he backed away. “You… You're trying to trick me! You where sent by the devil to trick me into worshipping him!”
Alastor shook his head. “No, Lucifer, I'm trying to help you!”
“Isa 5:20, ‘Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!’ You want me to think you're good! But you're not! You're the devil in disguise!” Lucifer backed up towards the river.
“Lucifer-”
“2 Corinthians 11:14-15, ‘Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds’” Lucifer said, gripping his hair. “You're a devil… a devil!” Lucifer fell into the river. “AH!”
“LUCIFER!” Alastor ran and tried to grab Lucifer's hand, but just missed.
Lucifer splashed into a deep part of the river. He frantically flailed, trying to get back up to the surface, but his foot got caught on something. He couldn't open his eyes to see. He frantically tried to pull his foot free. It didnt help that he never learned how to swim.
Alastor stared at the water, anxiously waiting for Lucifer to come back up. Why hadn't he come up yet?
Lucifer was panicking, which only made it harder to hold his breath. If he wasn't underwater, Lucifer would have been crying. What the hell was holding onto his foot!?
Alastor tugged in his hair, stressed. “Fuck,” he whispered. He jumped into the river. He had to get Lucifer out of there before he drowned. He forced his eyes open, despite the sting. He found Lucifer. His foot was caught in debris and rocks. He quickly swam over to tug Lucifer free.
Lucifer panicked when he felt someone grab his leg. He was going to kick them but realized they where helping him.
Once Lucifer's leg was free, Alastor grabbed him and pulled him up to the surface.
Lucifer gasped and coughed as he felt the cold air hit his face. He immediately started shivering.
Alastor dragged Lucifer onto dry land and sat down, leaning against a tree and panting.
Lucifer leaned on him, exhausted and trying to catch his breath. He coughed up water. He hugged himself, shivering from the cold. He looked at Alastor.
“God…” Alastor whispered, still panting. “Are you okay?” He asked, turning his head to Lucifer.
Lucifer nodded. “I-I'm fine…” he mumbled. He hugged his knees. “Just cold…” he sniffled. “Um… Th-thank you for s-saving me…” he muttered. “I-I guess if you w-where evil you w-would have let me d-drown… I'm sorry…”
“It's fine,” Alastor said. He coughed. “You uh… You've clearly gone through a lot of stuff…” he pushed his wet hair back with his hands. “I don't blame you for anything,”
Lucifer wiped his tears and sniffed.
Alastor gently rubbed his hand up and down Lucifer's back.
“How did I never realize that Father was abusive?” Lucifer asked after a minute if silence.
Alastor looked at him. He shrugged. “My guess? You where told lies your entire life. Your dad just… lied to you to make you think things about him that make him seem like a better person than he really is,”
Lucifer nodded. “That sounds about right,” he said quietly. He whimpered. “Man, I'm so cold… and tired…” he looked up at the sky. “I don't want to go back to my family now… not while Father is there…” he wiped away the tears on his cheeks.
Alastor frowned. “I can ask my mom if you can stay with us for the night… and if you want to tell her about your family situation…” he gently rubbed Lucifer's shoulder. “She might be able to help,”
Lucifer hesitated. “I don't want to tell anyone about Father yet,” he said. “I'm still processing the whole situation,”
Alastor nodded.
“But I'd like to be away from him for a while,” he itched his neck.
Alastor hummed. He stood up and pulled Lucifer up to his feet. “Can you walk okay?” He asked.
Lucifer nodded. “I'm fine,” he hugged himself.
Alastor put an arm around Lucifer to help him stay steady just in case. “Come on, Maman will be happy to meet you,”

hello there! today i came across a claim that sort of baffled me. someone said that they believed the historical norse heathens viewed their own myths literally. i was under the impression that the vast majority of sources we have are christian sources, so it seems pretty hard to back that up. is there any actual basis for this claim? thanks in advance for your time!
Sorry for the delay, I've been real busy lately and haven't been home much. Even after making you wait I'm still going to give a copout answer.
I think the most basic actual answer is that it's doubtful that someone has a strong basis to make that claim, and the same would probably go for someone claiming they didn't take things literally. I think we just don't know, and most likely, it was mixed-up bits of both literal and non-literal belief, and which parts were literal and which parts weren't varied from person to person. We have no reason so suppose that there was any compulsion to believe things in any particular way.
About Christians being the interlocutors of a lot of mythology, this is really a whole separate question. On one hand there's the question of whether they took their myths literally, and on the other is entirely different question about whether or not we can know what those myths were. Source criticism in Norse mythology is a pretty complicated topic but the academic consensus is definitely that there are things we can know for sure about Norse myth, and a lot more that we can make arguments for. For instance the myth of Thor fishing for Miðgarðsormr is attested many times, not only by Snorri but by pagan skálds and in art. Myths of the Pagan North by Christopher Abram is a good work about source criticism in Norse mythology.
Though this raises another point, because the myth of Thor fishing is not always the same. Just like how we have a myth of Thor's hammer being made by dwarves, and a reference to a different myth where it came out of the sea. Most likely, medieval Norse people were encountering contradictory information in different performances of myth all the time. So while that leaves room for at least some literal belief, it couldn't be a rigid, all-encompassing systematic treatment of all myth as literal. We have good reason to believe they changed myths on purpose and that it wasn't just memory errors.
I know you're really asking whether this one person has any grounds for their statement, and I've already answered that I don't think they do. But this is an interesting thought so I'm going to keep poking at it. I'm not sure that I'm really prepared to discuss this properly, but my feeling is that this is somehow the wrong question. I don't know how to explain this with reference to myth, so I'm going to make a digression, and hope that you get the vibe of what I'm getting at by analogy. Edward Burnett Tylor (1832–1917) described animism in terms of beliefs, "belief in spiritual beings," i.e. a belief that everything (or at least many things) has a soul or spirit. But this is entirely contradicted by later anthropology. Here's an except from Pantheologies by Mary Jane Rubenstein, p. 93:
their animacy is not a matter of belief but rather of relation; to affirm that this tree, that river, or the-bear-looking-at-me is a person is to affirm its capacity to interact with me—and mine with it. As Tim Ingold phrases the matter, “we are dealing here not with a way of believing about the world, but with a condition of living in it.”
In other words, "belief" doesn't even really play into it, whether or not you "believe" in the bear staring you down is nonsensical, and if you can be in relation with a tree then the same goes for that relationality; "believing" in it is totally irrelevant or at least secondary. Myths are of course very different and we can't do a direct comparison here, but I have a feeling that the discussion of literal versus nonliteral would be just as secondary to whatever kind of value the myths had.
One last thing I want to point out is that they obviously had the capacity to interpret things through allegory and metaphor because they did that frequently. This is most obvious in dream interpretations in the sagas. Those dreams usually convey true, prophetic information, but it has to be interpreted by wise people who are skilled at symbolic interpretation. I they ever did this with myths, I'm not aware of any trace they left of that, but we can at least be sure that there was nothing about the medieval Norse mind that confined it to literalism.
For multiple reasons this is not an actual answer but it's basically obligatory to mention that some sagas, especially legendary or chivalric sagas, were referred to in Old Norse as lygisögur, literally 'lie-sagas' (though not pejoratively and probably best translated just as 'fictional sagas'). We know this mostly because Sverrir Sigurðsson was a big fan of lygisögur. But this comes from way too late a date to be useful for your question.

teslee noble - math term, which is d3 related!!
mizzen fahey / callahan - both irish surnames which comes from d4s irish influences. again i hc mizzen to not be related to coral in canon, but in modern/different aus they're siblings!!

So I haven't really talked about maps much because I'm much better at understanding characters (in visual, narrative, and gameplay design) than locations. Easy solution though: use the characters as a jumping off point for the maps. Not necessarily directly, these aren't all the characters' dedicated "home maps", but they're in some way thematically adjacent to the cast. I haven't had many super crazy ideas about modes yet, so if I don't mention a payload of some kind then assume it's some basic control point based map.
Wilderoad: Railroad Gorge. A payload map set in a dusty desert, where the objective is a train car that the attackers have to escort along the rail from one small town to another.
Calber: Held Line. A historic battleground being fought on once again, with ruined outposts and scraps of fallen soldiers dotting the landscape.
Poppett: Concrete Park. An urban region of back-alley skate parks and other gathering grounds for rebellious youth, with tight alleyways connecting the major open focal points.
Yanno: Boardwalk Festival. A scenic nighttime party, with the attackers tasked with riding a party boat down a river into the main event. The boat itself can be used as a more convenient means of crossing the river, changing what paths are available to some characters as the attackers advance.
Velenna: Hazard Plant. A haphazard chemical facility with pools of corrosive chemicals that can rapidly damage any bots who stand in it.
Lyonn: Bio Dome. An environmental research facility that's very recently fallen into disarray. Previously home to some of the highest biodiversity on the planet, many specimens have broken free into the outer environment, though the amount of plant life that isn't trying to kill you is appreciably high.
Formann: Construction Site. A section of in-progress buildings, with destructible structures and moving mechanisms making some areas tricky to navigate.
Navea: Stormy Beach. A beachside battlefront with barricades and military outposts dotting the shoreline. The ever present water makes for a unique sort of cover, though it will eb and flow with the tides as the match progresses.
Harmony: Abandoned Theater. A once-respected venue now fallen into ruin, with the main stage acting as the focal point of the fight.
??????: Ghost Town. A deserted desert town in Outlander territory, with its forsaken buildings forcing some close-quarters battles.
Xenir: Uphill Mine. A spiraling mine where one team has to push a cart full of precious resources up to the top, while the other tries to stop them from above.
Soriser: ...gonna be honest, a bit stumped on this one. Definitely not a Keeper facility outright, that feels a bit too "sacred" to fight in, but maybe something nearby?
Otto: North Street. A run-down city street where the attackers are hired help to safely escort a local politician across town in his everything-proof car, while the defenders intercept his ride.
Nekross: Not certain here yet either. Probably some sort of bot graveyard or something.
Burnett: Tempered Workshop. Fight inside and outside a set of factory buildings, with cauldrons of molten metal that can melt an unwary bot into nothingness with just one wrong step.
Ezela: Power Line. A service tunnel used by the Power Managers, where the attackers are tasked with transporting a power cell along the uneasy corridors. At some points in the path, the cart carrying the cell has to be delivered up elevators, requiring the attackers to ride alongside it. Some sections of the path will energize the battery, giving all attackers nearby a damage boost in addition to the standard passive healing.
Arber: ...another one I'm unsure of. Maybe somewhere in Plantoid territory, but that might be a bit much for a PvP map. If so, then maybe one of the gimmicks is neutral Spring Blooms acting as jump pads.
??????: Offshore Outpost. An ocean research facility with paths that weave between above and below the water, though the control points are all in the open air. Moving platforms act as paths over the water, while underwater bubble vents can launch you back up.
Honestly already way more confident in the prospects of maps now, tried to come up with ideas that are interesting to explain without having full-on layouts already, with many of them having some kind of defined unique gimmick or some kind of "narrative".
also there's a couple somewhat sneaky hints at a few more unrevealed bots here. Though to be clear: neither of the mystery names are Hyvera, because god she's such a pain to figure out the logistics of and the new 4th support is just better I promise.

Meet Methuselah, The Worlds Oldest Fish in Captivity
The lungfish arrived in San Francisco on a steamship along with 230 other fish. Today, she’s the only living aquatic animal from that vessel.
She’s super-gentle, and doesn’t get overly excited. She enjoys eating earthworms, fruits and vegetables, and slowly moving around her tank. Her favorite food – at least for what is in season now – is a fig.
If Methuselah sounds like a grand old dame, it’s because she is: she is the oldest living fish in captivity, aged somewhere upwards of 92 and potentially as high as 101 years. She arrived on a steamship from Australia along with 230 other fish to the Steinhart aquarium in San Francisco in 1938 as a young, small fish. And Methuselah’s story unfolded in a typical way, for a fish in an aquarium: she grew. Humans came to look at her. She peered back through glass at humans.
But 1938 was a different time: bread cost nine cents a loaf. A racehorse named Seabiscuit was winning races. Germany was persecuting Jews, foretelling a coming conflict in Europe. Then there is Methuselah, who is no ordinary fish. She’s the only fish still living from the steamship. And most important, she’s a lungfish – a species more closely related to humans or cows than to ray-finned fish like salmon or cod – which can breathe air using a single lung when streams become stagnant, or when water quality changes. Lungfish are also believed to be an example of the original creatures that crawled out of water and moved to land in evolutionary history. The species was discovered in 1870 – and the scientist who first described the fish originally thought it was an amphibian.
Lungfish like Methuselah have long-held secrets, but scientists have only recently attempted to understand their evolution and life history. For one thing, the fish’s genome is the largest of any animal, containing 43bn base pairs – roughly 14 times the number in the human genome. The previous record holder, the Mexican axolotl, has a genome made up of 32bn base pairs.
“Genetics is really quite straightforward for normal fish – but for lungfish they’re so unique and so different that all of those techniques didn’t or don’t work,” said David T Roberts, a senior scientist with Seqwater, the statutory authority of the government of Queensland in Australia, where the fish still live in a handful of rivers in the wild. “It’s always pushed the envelope on uncovering some of its secrets to be able to manage and conserve it – and age is a really important one.”
A fish’s age is critical to know because it tells scientists information like growth rates, maturity, longevity and how long they breed – which is vital fundamental knowledge to manage a protected species.
Lungfish – a vulnerable species – have proved especially challenging to date because they grow a lot at the beginning of their lives, but then grow extremely slowly (yet continuously) for the remainder of their lives. Ear bones that are harvested after most fish’s death can be counted like tree rings, but lungfish, always the outlier, don’t have the same composition to their ear bones.
So scientists started to use radiocarbon to date the fish – relying on a technique that basically imprints living things with a carbon signature resulting from the atomic bomb tests back in the 1950s. But that doesn’t work well in animals born before 1950, when the carbon signature changed.
Now, scientists are using DNA tools that look at methylation – the way that DNA is turned on or off – to date the fish. For younger fish, it can offer an exact number, but for older fish it gives a range of dates.
It wasn’t the first time this technique had been used. Last year, scientists estimated a lungfish named Granddad that lived at the Shedd aquarium in Chicago to be 109 years old (give or take six years) at the time of its death, confirming that lungfish can live well over 100 years. The analysis also revealed that Granddad started its life in the Burnett River in Queensland, Australia, the location of the species’ original discovery in 1870.
In the study on Methuselah, aquarium workers took samples the size of a peppercorn from the lungfish in captivity and extracted the DNA from that in order to estimate their age for the first time ever. They found Methuselah to be at least 92 years old. The scientists plan to release their findings of 30 other lungfish later this year, as part of a library of living lungfish across the world.
“Knowing how long they potentially live and understanding more about how long they could reproduce could drive how we’re caring for habitat to help keep that species afloat in the wild,” says Brenda Melton, director of animal care and welfare at the Steinhart aquarium. “It just really opens the doors for a lot of other conversations and questions that might be able to be asked about how we can better care for them in the wild and preserve habitat.”
Roberts is inspired to continue to conserve the fish – after all, lungfish were around before dinosaurs became extinct, and their cousins possibly split off into animals with legs and then crawled on to land and then became humans, he says. “They’re a cousin to all land animals, basically.”
Methuselah’s age is now known, but she still holds other mysteries – even her biological sex. The handlers use she/her pronouns, but they actually don’t know if Methuselah is a male or female. Some fish have gender differences in size or shape – but not lungfish. And behaviorally, they suspect she’s a female, but they will not be able to find out for sure until after she dies.
Another question is if the fish is feeling old – and how do fish change when they’re geriatric? Melton says it varies widely. Most fish live only a few years – so it’s rare to see really old fish in the wild. But there are some hints: some spinal changes, like a curved back, or weight loss, cloudy eyes or looking a little gray in the scales.
Two of the other fish in the new study were estimated to be 50 and 54 years old – and Melton says they look a little more similar in coloration, while Methuselah has gotten a little lighter in color over the years. “We don’t know that that’s actually tied to her age, but it’s the only thing that we have seen physically that looks different for this fish.”
Melton says that just the existence of something that has lived for so long leaves her in awe. She wonders what Methuselah thinks of all her companions and living situations over the many years she’s spent at the aquarium – as the fish has the longest institutional memory of anything in the building.
“It’s incredible to me that after all of these years of having her in our care,” she says, “we’re still learning and we still have the ability to learn from animals in ways that we can’t even conceive yet.”

Australian Lungfish - s a member of the Australian Lungfish family and is native to southern Queensland, Australia in Burnett and Mary River systems. It inhabits mud, sand or gravel bottoms. It is a sluggish species that prefers still or slow-flowing waters, usually in deep pools. During period of drought, it can tolerate stagnant conditions by breathing air, surfacing 1-2 times per hour. It feeds on frogs, tadpoles, fishes, shrimp, earthworms, snails, aquatic plants and native fruits fallen from trees. It can reach a maximum length of 170 cm (5.6 feet) and a maximum weight of 40 kg (80.2 pounds). https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/163213685

MWW Artwork of the Day (2/18/23) Classical India (Pala Empire, 750–1174 CE) Vishnu with His Consorts, Lakshmi and Sarasvati (c. 11th–12th c.) Black stone relief sculpture, 218.4 x 136.3 x 30.2 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Cora Timken Burnett Bequest)
In this extremely large sculpture, the Hindu god Vishnu is attended by his two consorts: to his left, Sarasvati, the goddess of poetry and music; to his right, Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune. The architectural ensemble in which they stand is inhabited by a series of gods, demigods, ascetics, and worshipers. Two river goddesses stand at the base of the columns. Beyond them, at the outer edges in niches, are figures representing the weapons of Vishnu in human form: Gadadevi (his mace) and Chakrapurusha (his war discus). Ganesha occupies the niche at the top left corner; Karttikeya occupies the corresponding spot on the right. The two inner niches house Shiva (left) and Brahma (right).

end of year reading 2023
classics:
norwegian wood by murakami (i was on vacation, my phone was dying and i only had this book)
secret garden by burnett (our library copy has a missing page so i had to go to gutenburg.org to finish)
daddy-long-legs by webster (only to cross off the “letters” category in my reading bingo; i also considered this “(not so) dark academia”)
manga:
usotoki rhetoric by ritsu miyako (period mystery; couldn’t get enough)
daddy, the beard gorilla and i by koike sadaji (bittersweet slice of life about a widower and his kid moving in with his younger brother)
series:
elemental logic by laurie j. marks (hurts so good; some ugly crying but could not get enough of it and i love the glyphs)
haley and nana stories by maggie hogarth (cozy and cute litrpg with calligraphy but found myself arguing against the religious views)
fave library discoveries:
linnea at monet’s garden by bjork and anderson (children’s book with gorgeous illustrations; counted this and sequels as my “cottagecore” reads)
a month in siena by hisham matar (wonderfully written about art and author’s grief for his father)
chord by rick barot (amazing poetry by filipino-american queer author; enjoyed it more than his galleon book)
other people’s recs:
one long river of song by brian doyle (savoured the heck out of this essay/poetry collection; reccd by austin kleon)
kamogawa food detectives by hisashi kashiwai (loved the japanese drama so I didn’t need the rec; saw it on ig and immediately got a copy)
at the amberleaf fair by phyllis ann karr (jo walton rec; i discovered a lot of older sff via walton’s blog at tor)
new release:
salvage right by lee and miller (i am obsessed with the liaden books)
other memorable reads: t. kingfisher’s minor mage and wizard’s defensive guide to baking and dorothy gilman’s clairvoyant countess picked up on sale at work.
I enjoyed the reading bingo so much I made another one for next year with old & new categories and added a 3x3 mini movie bingo as well.
I read about 126 this year aiming for at least one more, but next year, I’m lowering my goal to 75 to ease the pressure.
