Dead silence
Tumblr media
This post is an attempt to share or let out some of my complex feelings about the situation in Bangladesh.
We went to our city's protest yesterday. It was a silent, peaceful protest. The Bangladeshi student community here in Kingston stood in a human chain with placards. "Save Bangladesh student", yes grammatically wrong, yes, it assumes that young revolutionaries need saving, so on and so forth. The protest started and ended quietly. My non-Bangladeshi friends were a bit confused, since they're used to chanty protests for Palestine, or union picket lines with cars passing by, honking in support. There was more noise even for the Iranian protests, Zan Zendegi Azadi. The silence of a graveyard in this one, though.
Who cares about little old Bangladesh? I sometimes wonder. We're not in the eye of the middle eastern storm like Syria, Lebanon or Palestine are. We're not strategically important, we don't even have many natural resources like Sudan or Congo do. The Prime Minister visited China recently to ask for an aid or a loan, and came back pretty much empty handed. China isn't very interested in us. India has gotten what it needed to get, and can milk more out of us, but they can do the same with Nepal or Bhutan too. We're never in the headlines, the US or the West in general isn't interested in us at all. And Pakistan denies that the 1971 genocide ever happened.
Which is why, the world isn't missing our voices due to the internet blackout.
The voices were all over my Facebook newsfeed. Aunties and apus on Facebook live selling sarees, jewelry, crafts, elderly boomers sharing gardening tips, quick fixes or herbal remedies that they swear by, people sharing posts about cricket or which cricketer's wife wore what, food bloggers calling every possible dish juicy (be it a burger or the meat in biriyani), celebrity drama, political drama to the extent of what was allowed back home. That sort of thing.
Now, again, there's the silence of a graveyard over here. And I feel like screaming till I snap my vocal cords. Can you all please come back? Please? The silence is unbearable! Please! I won't judge you if you sell your wares! Please! I won't judge if you think turmeric water can act as a miracle detox! Please, please I won't say a word if your post about your stupid cricket match! Just something, please say something! I haven't seen a single one of you online. Please don't die, please stay safe. When the internet comes back, please, post about your vacations and your pets. Not the dead, please, don't post about the bodies. I can take a bit of silence but not more bodies please!
Speaking of bodies. There was an armoured vehicle, painted navy blue in the colours of the police (fuck them). And there was a body on top of it. Dead, obviously, very dead, because it flopped down with the slightest nudge, and was left on the streets. Before that happened, the vehicle drove about as if parading its spoils of war, with the body on top. Sending a message. This will happen to you if you raise your voice.
That image has been haunting me for two nights now. So yeah, I'm not man enough to get some incisive political analysis out. I have no either or predictions for what happens if the regime falls or doesn't fall. My body feels numb, I've been binge eating because I still have food in the house and I won't be gunned down if I go out to get groceries now. My non-Bangladeshi friends, bless their first world hearts, have never had to live under fascism. Bless their hearts, have never had to stifle their voices to the extent that we've had to. Bless their beautiful hearts, could hardly pronounce Bangladesh. But they still showed up to that docile little protest because they care about my spouse and I. I can't even begin to thank them.
My insides are tearing up. I'm sitting with a poker face typing all this word vomit, but my insides are nothing but a scream. No clever realpolitik comes out of a heart that's screaming, because our mouths are sewn shut.

Places around Bangladesh to eat and reviews.
Even though, home is the best place to eat and lick your fingers but how long hygienic home made food satisfies our tummy? For a variation, it's important to roam around and try food from different places. Starting from the street food to the caged restaurants, Bangladesh has the best cuisine so far. We, the foodies, know more or less about places. However, I felt like sharing my experiences from different places. Enjoy!
1. Mermaid Beach Resort Cox's Bazar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though it looks like a platter, but both dishes are individual. On the right, the bowl contains fried calamari  and the other one is grilled calamari. Honestly, this is probably going to be a negative review. Trust me the grilled calamari they served was raw inside and there was almost NO SEASONING! On the other hand, the fried calamari tasted better but similarly it had close to zero seasoning. About the ketchup, mustard sauce and mint sauce, the mustard sauce had a raw smell in it but rest of the two were edible. Anyway, The cafè has an amazing beach view in the front side and hills on the left. Apart from the food, the view was something to soothe one's mind. We had another grilled fish which was also raw inside, I don't wanna recall the gross feeling anymore. Lastly, the entire thing costed us around 2.6k, which was totally a WASTE! I'll suggest you to visit Mermaid since the place is mesmerizing but don't ever try their food! Like never!
Another best place to visit in Cox's bazar is Shugondha beach. They have the fresh and live fish there, you can choose your own customized fresh fish over there. The environment is friendly and the food is beyond amazing! We had crabs over there. The platter was affordable and worth the money.
Tumblr media
We all more or less visit, visited and will visit Chittagong, Bangladesh. As Chittagong is my hometown, I love the place more than anything else. Even though Chittagong does not have enormous restaurants like Dhaka do but Barcode cafè is something nobody should miss. They have the best cuisine in Chittagong. Their friendly behavior, great music taste, environment attract me the most. Even though I love all their dishes but this chicken steak meal something you should not miss. 😭 I'm dying for it now.
Tumblr media
The best feature of this steak is its juicy texture and tenderness. Even though they don't boil the veg properly but I love it anyway.
Price : 250++
4. Chillox
Sorry. If you do not love Chillox, we can not be friends. I know a bunch of people hate Chillox but it has always been my go - to burger shop whenever I'm broke. (I'm always broke though). I tried a lot to make their honey mustard sauce but always failed. That sauce is something to die for, honestly! Also the great amount of cheese they provide is satisfying. Nevertheless, they have the best deal in town. I can never wait to have them, nor my friends. This is a recent picture of their burger, you can see how my friend was being impatient in this picture to have the burger. Therefore, the outcome is a hazy picture. -_-
I can never get over this place! 😭
Tumblr media
Hope this blog was helpful. Share with me your experiences in the comments. Catch you up in the next blog. Happy eating. ❤

Watch "Cheapest Street Burger Master | Bangladeshi Street Food" on YouTube
youtube
Although burgers were originally a European-American fast food, it is now a very popular street food worldwide. Burgers are available as street food in almost all countries of the world.
However, there are differences in the preparation and ingredients of burgers in different countries. Thinking of the low-income people of South Asian countries Bangladesh and India, street food vendors here combine European-American burgers with local vegetables and spices to make low-cost burgers, which are very popular here.
Our documentary today is about such a roadside burger in Bangladesh.

Cultures connected over the weekend in Haggard Park at the 14th annual Plano AsiaFest. The Asian American Heritage Foundation hosted the event in collaboration with the city of Plano, local businesses, volunteers and community support.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the park was filled with performances representing India, China, Thailand, South Korea and other Asian cultures. Local centers like the Wang Tao Kung Fu School and Lee’s U.S. Taekwondo Academy martial arts of Plano performed alongside the Maharlika Dancers of North Texas, the Dallas Asian American Youth Orchestra, Chinese dances from the International Pageant & Culture Foundation and more.
Festival-goers had their choice of Korean and Japanese food from Pineapple Grill, Taiwanese food from Bobaddiction, Vietnamese food from Highline Cuisine, Chinese food and drink from J.S. Chen’s Dim Sum and BBQ and Delish Bubble Tea alongside burgers and American food from Ye Ole Butcher Shop and The Pink Company.
The highlight of AsiaFest was its annual Asian Culture Fashion Show featuring traditional garb from Asian countries like Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and more. Several local children from all over Collin County modeled Bangladeshi kurtas, Thai formal wear for men and women, Filipio barongs and more.
The Chu sisters of Flower Mound – Kim, Lauren and Cameron – modeled Vietnamese “ao dai” at AsiaFest. Ao dai’s are long, flowing tunics worn over black, white or colored pants. Linda Chu and Su Wan of Plano wore traditional garb from the Chinese dynasties.
There was also a demonstration of Shaolin Hung Gar Kung Fu martial arts from the Chinese Culture Center based in Garland.
Monique Johnson of Cedar Hill and Timarra Rodgers of Plano visited AsiaFest Saturday afternoon with their daughters, Brene and Nyla Devers and Rodger’s daughter, Haddassa.
Johnson said she heard about AsiaFest when her daughter, Brene Devers, had a field trip at the Interurban Railway Museum on 15th Street. Both Rodgers and Johnson said AsiaFest was a “play date” for the families.
While at the AsiaFest, Johnson’s daughters created some art at booths like the Crow Collection of Asian Art, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, REACH of Plano and more.
Haggard Park hosted a variety of cultures Saturday, which Rodgers said was a great way to bring people together.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
“I feel like it brings everybody into one. And learning about other people’s cultures makes you more all together, and I like that,” Rodger said. “I like the Asian culture. I’m loving that,” Rodgers said.
“Plus, not every parent has the money to take them out of the country or out of the state really, so this actually helps them see other cultures,” Johnson said. “I’m a military brat, so I’m all about trying to culture my kids.”
Rodgers said she attends a lot of community events in Plano, like AsiaFest, ArtFest and more.
“I really like the fact that they’re family-oriented. And they get you engaged. It’s not like you just come and you’re on your own. They want you to be engaged with everybody, and I like that a lot,” she said.

A Burger is a sandwich consisting of one or more cooked patties of ground meat, usually beef, placed inside a sliced bread roll or bun. The patty may be pan-fried, grilled, smoked, or flame-broiled.
Burgers come at different prices depending on the type and size. But surprisingly, burgers are available in Bangladesh for only 10 takas. This 10 taka burger is found inside the DC office adjacent to Daratana in Jessore city, the southwestern district of Bangladesh. Today's #Shorts episode of Food BD with this delicious and popular 10 taka Burger.
