I always liked John. He was a sweet guy and actually quite shy in private; he used the sarcastic facade to protect himself in public…

I miss those days. I miss John. I always liked the boys in the Beatles, but I have to say that it was John I could relate to the most. One of my fondest memories of him was at a party we'd crashed in London. The hosts were an Anglo-German couple with a young son. John kept his rapt attention all evening—by speaking to him in German. Of course, Lennon had a streak of the bad boy in him. One night in the Scotch of St. James, Princess Margaret was dancing, and John slid up behind her and whispered something outrageous in her ear. He was in hysterics about it, but wouldn’t tell me what he’d said. The next day, the owner of the Scotch got a stern warning from the Palace that if he couldn’t control his patrons, the authorities might investigate further and shut the place down.

I’ll never forget one really painful moment with him. He’d been raised, as has been recounted hundreds of times, by his aunt and had been severely traumatized after his mother was run over and killed by a drunk off-duty cop. I’m sure this had a lot to do with John’s attitude toward authority figures. As for his father, he’d abandoned John and his mother when John was about five. Once John became a Beatle, however, some pricks in the media tracked down the old man in Australia and persuaded him to travel to Britain to record a song and capitalize on the celebrity of the famous son he’d discarded.

That night, as John and I stood at the bar of the Scotch with drinks in our hands, the senior Lennon came through the doors with two press scumbags. John immediately tensed up. He swallowed his drink in one gulp but held onto his glass. When the trio reached us, there was an awful silence. The man in the middle put out his hand. John fixed his eyes on the stranger, and an uncomfortable smile came upon his face—always the mark of his nasty, defensive side kicking in. Then, in his nasal accent, John said to his long-lost father so the whole bar could hear: “Well, I guess you found yerself a gig at last, you old cunt.” He made a show of putting down his glass and walked out. Like a brother, I followed.
