how do i get into akagi and kaiji and other stuff like that im so lost
HII hello anon. so akagi and kaiji are 2 seperate works of the same author (fukumoto, fkmt for short) that dont follow each other or anything
AKAGI (the genius who descended into darkness) is a mahjong manga, u dont NEED mahjong knowledge to read it but it helps. theres also an anime but its bad (*worse) and a drama thats really good! akagi also has a sequel (in the in-story chronology) called Ten (the nice guy on the path of Tenhou) thats a LOT MORE mahjong heavy and ull need to know how to play to enjoy it fully. its also not a death game its just gambling fiction :] and its really good!! its where old akagi is from. theres also a drama that i only watched the 1st ep of but i believe is good. thats all for akagi! theres more prequels/sequels from these 2 but they dont include akagi so lets skip them
KAIJI! (gambling apocalypse) this ones death gambling. its divided into 6 parts that follow each other in the story but that each give you a full gamble so you can STOP whenever you want but you have to START at part 1. i made another post about kaiji so ill be quick
part 1 (officially translated manga, anime)
part 2 (fan translated manga, anime)
parts 3-5 (manga only, finished)
part 6 (ongoing, not gambling)
kaiji also has its share of spinoffs that you dont really need to worry about they are all comedic only and non-canon.
im assuming you mean other fkmt stuff (the pointy men extended universe), all of his other stories are equally self-contained so you can pick what kind of gambling or death game or mahjong interests you most and try it out!. the other well liked ones are usually gin to kin (scamming & gambling) buraiden gai (this ones its own category) and zero (this one has a sequel, math-themed death games then.. gambling death games?)
the best known and best liked from fkmt are kaiji & akagi tho so thats for sure the best place to start. mahjong likers prefer akagi n other people prefer kaiji usually lol so which you might wanna start w depends on that. but i do rec akagi to everyone ever for real and kaiji part 1 is required reading if youve ever considered getting into squid game, or liar game, and so on
THANK YOU for reaching out & asking! if you have more questions im so happy to answer them! in conclusion: THEM.

They're in there for your own safety. Do not free them. Please do not tap, shake, or attempt to open the jars, as these things may startle or endanger them.
These creatures, specifically called Koubutsuya Fukumoto ALL STARS bottle keychains (コウブツヤ福本 ALL STARS びんきゃらホルダー)  are various fkmt characters, specifically from the allstars series in which they're depicted in a chibi style. Beside them in their jars is themed items, and they were up for adoption at Comiket 88, from August 14th to 16th, 2015.
These little creatures come in 3 sets of 5:
Kaiji & Gin To Kin: Money Hero Set!
Kaiji, Kazuya, Ichijou, Ginji, Morita
Ten, Zero, Gai: Sanctuary Hero Set
Old Akagi, Ten, Hiroyuki, Zero, Gai
Drama Release! Akagi hero set
Akagi (19), Akagi (13), Ichikawa, Yukio, Washizu
This line seems to be a blessing to plenty of fans whos favorites were lacking in merchandise, even granting yukio the mercy of being referred to by his actual name rather than just 'fake akagi'. Rip osamu enjoyers though, but there's always the option of adding some freckles to the hiroyuki one and playing pretend.
After being sold at comiket they went up on the Koubutsuya shop, going for 3,500 yen per set in both places.
Though the original shop link seems to be down, thankfully they actually aren’t as rare as some other items, especially considering they were originally only sold in sets rather than as individual charms, leading to plenty of people with charms they didn’t want.
>>if you want more here’s an ever updating image archive of stuff, including things i’ve yet to write about<<

Thoughts on Buraiden Gai
Tumblr media
(Nobuyuki FUKUMOTO, 5 volumes,  Shuukan Shounen Magazine (Shounen), 2000)
Kudo Gai is a 13 years old orphan who desires to live totally independently, without ever relying on anyone else or having anyone rely on him. Framed for a murder he didn’t commit, he is sent to a juvenile detention center called the 'Human Institute'.
With just 5 volumes, Buraiden Gai is one of Fukumoto’s shortest series. The manga was ended early due to lack of popularity, and although Fukumoto still managed to wrap the story nicely, there was definitely potential for more. Overall, Buraiden Gai is a nice and solid read, perhaps a good introduction to the fukumotoverse for those who are intimidated by the length of some of his other series.
There is none of the gambling Fukumoto is most known for, but it is faithful to his usual art and writing style, characters archetypes (underdog character vs rich powerful evil men), and themes (human dignity, living a meaningful life...)
Buraiden Gai stands out as one of Fukumoto’s few manga aimed at a younger audience, as it was published in a shounen magazine rather than a seinen one. This didn’t stop Fukumoto from putting his characters through heavy psychological and physical torture! The “Human Institute” is a corrupt place led by an insane man who denies his prisoner’s very humanity and treats them like dogs until they can “be reborn as proper human beings”.

↑ obligatory Nazi inspired uniforms.
In my opinion, Buraiden Gai had an especially strong start, the first few chapters are my favorite. The main character is well introduced, he quickly becomes a complex character. He has an unorthodox outlook on life, and values his independence over everything else, even when it seems unreasonable. His way of thinking does makes sense considering his backstory (him being an orphan and such) and he didn’t come across as too edgy, which can be the risk with deliberate loner protags.
The second best character in my opinion is the policeman Abe, who even had a very nice chapter entirely dedicated to adding depth his character, despite him not appearing that much otherwise. It feels like more could have been done with him if the story had been allowed to be longer.
Unfortunately Gai’s fellow inmates are rather forgettable, but that is most likely due to the short length of the manga. It is not that much of a big deal thanks to the excellent protagonist who can carry the story on his own. (alone! Fitting for a serie with independance as a central theme)
There are a few plot points that I found a bit too convenient to be believable, (the very conveniently timed gas explosion, the lack of a password on the computer Gai stole, and how did Abe find the island the Human Institute is on so quickly when it is supposed to be totally secret?) but it didn’t stop me from enjoying Buraiden Gai.
Interestingly, despite Gai teaming up with others at the end , the series still ends with a call to “stand alone”.

Is it ever explained on how Gai got that scar? also do you think we'll ever get a zero 3? since it left on a huge cliffhanger
IT ACTUALLY WAS .................... fkmt said in an interview that there's literally no canonical reason for it and fkmt only gave him a scar to differentiate gai from akagi and make him look cool. said in the same interview he doesn't think much about the backstories of characters.
if you look within the work itself there's some implication that it's a burn (or at least really looks like one) but he's been through so much already that i like to imagine that it's literally just a birthmark
another fun fact: though it's often depicted as bright red by fans, his scar is only just colored dark
Tumblr media
but it's also pinkish in allstars
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as for zero part 3.... according to a rough translation for another interview, apparently fkmt didn't plan on even making a part 2 initially??? which is REALLY funny if you remember the end to part 1 but i don't see a part 3 happening
