RAVENSWOOD BUNCETON, MISSOURI
Ravenswood is a grand mansion that was built back in 1880 by Nadine and Charles Leonard. The Leonards were a couple who loved nothing more than entertaining and they would often string lanterns through the trees, hire an orchestra and invite all of their friends to dance the night away. Nadine remained in her beloved home until she died aged 90 years old and it seems that perhaps her spirit has never left. A family servant tried to enter Nadine’s bedroom after her death to collect some clothing only to find the door locked from inside! It was agreed that the lock would have to be broken, but by the time the servant returned with the required tools the door was open! Christmas ornaments are often thrown down the stairs, a broken music box randomly plays music despite not having worked for years and some visitors say they can hear music and laughter from the lawns, reminiscent of Nadine’s lavish parties!

Stefán Karl's lecture at the Bunceton School in Pettis County, Missouri, USA - January 2006
Articles taken from NewspaperArchive.com of the Sedalia Democrat newspaper from the 20th of January 2006.
LOCAL SCHOOLS Icelandic actor takes bullies to task during visit
BY BETH O'MALLEY the Sedalia Democrat
BUNCETON - Fifth graders in Elizabeth Barkey's class eagerly awaited their television-star guest Thursday morning.
"Dude, they could be here any minute," said one student about 8:40 a.m., five minutes before Stefan Karl was supposed to be speaking to the calss.
Right on time, Mr.Karl poked his head in the door:"So this is the class I've been waiting to see," he said. Mr.Karl plays Robbie Rotten, a character in the Nick Jr. TV show Lazytown.
The fifth-grade at Bunceton school had several fundraisers including a penny drive, to raise money for Mr.Karl's organization, Rainbow Children.
ON THE WEB HTTP://WWW.REGNBOGABORN.IS: (Click on the Um okkur/About Us link, then on the link for information in English.)
The organization is based in Iceland, Mr.Karl's home country, where it is known as "Regnbogaborn." It works with children who are the victims of bullying, and provides counseling, a place for children to make friends outside of school, and other services, Mr.Karl said. He is working to establish Rainbow Children in the United States.
Miss Barkey's class raised $338, which was split between Rainbow Children and the …………………………………………………………………. BULLIES see Page 5 >>
Photo caption: JOSEPH BEAHER/DEMOCRAT Stefan Karl, an actor on the children’s show “LazyTown,” talks to elementary students at Bunceton school on Thursday. The fifth-grade there raised money for Mr. Karl's organization “Rainbow Children,” an organization that encourages young people not to be bullies.
BULLIES Continued from Page 1
Salvation Army for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Miss Barkey has used episodes of LazyTown for character education.
“When I heard that (about the fundraising), | said ‘I must go meet these kids,” Mr. Karl said.
Bunceton was the first school he's spoken to in the U.S. He told an assembly of kindergartners to sixth-graders that he’s talked about bullying in schools across Iceland.
Mr. Karl spent 45 minutes talking to the fifth-grade class before the assembly.
He told students he was bullied as a child. Other students would tease him about his big ears, he said. As he grew older, the teasing turned physical, and students would pull him around by his hair or beat him up. One time, a group of students stripped him in the middle of the library, throwing his clothes out a window, Mr. Karl said.
“I tried to think, why did they do this?” Mr. Karl said "… I'm not sure even today, I'm not sure why.”
To deal with bullies, Mr. Karl said he refused to accept the insults he heard. If a student is told he or she is ugly, “Don't say anything, just think, ‘No, I'm not. I'm cute.”
He succeeded in life “because I decided that I'm not going to let anyone tell me who I am.”
Students in the class sang the theme song of “LazyTown” for Mr. Karl.
Kaitlyn Fountain, 12. said her favorite part of his talk to the class was when he began singing: along with the students.
Kristin Wieland, 10, said she liked Mr.Karl telling them he wasn’t good at soccer, but he was a referee for several years.
Mr. Karl told the students at the assembly that “We have to take care of each other,” and students should tell a teacher or their parents about bullies or try to stop a bully.
“We can not allow bullying — never, You have to stop it,” Mr. Karl said.
Mr. Karl answered students’ questions, mostly about the television show and “Robbie Rotten.”
He described his character as “a big softy” who was like Wile E. Coyote in the Looney Toon cartoons. Wile E. Coyote always sel traps for the Roadrunner, but they end up ensnaring the coyote instead. “He thinks he’s evil, but he’s funny.”
Kids at the assembly cheered after Mr. Karl and his wife, Steinunn Olina Thorsteinsdottir, took their picture to send to Iceland. The two also took digital video of the students saying “Hello kids in Iceland,” in Icelandic,
omalleyfsadatademocnit.com
Collection of photos from the same day:
The original source of the first two photos is unknown, but these ones were found on LazytownPoint, the group photo is likely the photo that Steinunn took of them all together.
