Chapter 13
Bombs Ahoy
Summary:
You've made it to the South Pole. As the time is nearing to take down Unalaq in his plans. Will you be able to stop him in time?
Notes:
Some keys:
y/s/n = Your Sister's Name y/s/s/n or y/b/s/n = Your Second Sister's Name/Your Baby Sister's Name y/a/n = Your Aunt's Name
Asami tells everyone the news which causes Korra to get emotional and Tenzin tries to calm her down. “We’re almost there once we’re close we can take Oogi to make it to the healing hut fast.” Korra balls her fists and looks down.
Once we make it to the port everyone hurries on Oogi Tenzin passing Jinora to Bumi who gently sets her down beside Kya. Your eyes sadden as you look down at Jinora taking her hand “hang in there, kid” you whisper as you look at Kya whose face is filled with worry “she’s going to pull through. She’s strong” Kya takes her gaze away from Jinora and looks over at you and softly nods before a sense of guilt washes her “it’s my fault, I encouraged her to guide Korra to the spirit world. She’s stuck there because of me” she whispers her voice pang with emotion as she tears up. “There are always risk when doing anything. Jinora is very mature and strong for her age. You had no idea this would happen. You’ve done all you’ve can to keep Jinora’s body alive. We’ve made it to the South Pole. We have to keep our spirits up for Jinora. She would want us to keep fighting.” You put your hand on the cuff of her shoulder giving her a light squeeze “thanks, y/n. That’s kind of you.” you give her a small smile before dropping your hand down then looking out at the horizon seeing the healing hut coming into view.
You offer to hold Jinora to let Kya get down with Tenzin while Korra runs to meet her mother. You pick up Jinora cradling her in your arms and once Tenzin is ready you pass her down to him. Once Tenzin has Jinora in his arms everyone makes their way down from Oogi and make way inside the healing hut. Korra and Kya open the doors for Tenzin, and it surprises the whole group to see the healing hut filled over its capacity with injured soldiers. Your eyes scan the whole room your stomach dropping to witness this scene but your eyes land on a woman with large curly hair taking care of a patient. “y/s/n” you whisper under your breath as you see your now adult younger sister as she is healing a man’s shoulder. Katara turns and sees the group walking towards the team “what happened?” Katara checks out Jinora in Tenzin’s arms “her soul is trapped in the spirit world.”
“oh, my goodness. How long has she been away?”
“Almost a week. I’ve tried to keep her energy flowing, but I can feel her slipping away. You’re the only one who can help her now, mom.” Kya cups Jinora’s cheek as she reports to her mother on Jinora’s health. Oh man almost a week. You don’t know much about spirituality but even for you that’s far too long to be away from your body. Katara and her family walk into the private healing room to help Jinora right away.
You’re standing at the entrance when you start to step forward walking past Team Avatar going towards your sister. “y/s/n” you speak as the woman looks up and her eyes widen as realization hits of who the person calling her name, “y/n!” she drops her wrapping on the tray and hurries to you and gives you a massive hug “Oh Raava, what are you doing here?! Can’t you see were in the middle of a civil war!” she mutters as she steps back looking at you, you let out a single laugh. “I see you’re still the worrying type like mom” you both exchange smiles as she’s letting go of you “it’s been three years since we last saw each other, y/n. Now what are you doing here?”
“I wasn’t going to let you have all the fun. I came with Avatar Korra to help the war front and stop Unalaq. Also, I wanted to make sure you were safe” your eyes soften at the end “I’m glad you are. If anything happened to you…” you trail off as you feel your throat tighten “hey, come here” your sister walks you to a corner of the hut away from the patients and pulls you into another hug “I’m not the same little kid that you dropped off at Aunt y/a/n’s hut anymore. I’ve become quite the healer since studying under Master Katara and Kya. I can handle myself.”
You nod as you listen to your sister, she’s always been caring, kind, and sensitive. Been in tune with her emotions and always knew when you or y/s/s/n were feeling off or needed a hug. Empathic of your emotions. You pull back as you wipe the couple of tears that were able to escape as your sister looks at the closed doors of the private room “what happened to Master Tenzin’s daughter?” she softly asked, and you explained to your sister Jinora’s condition and you watch your sister’s face saddens. “poor child, but she’s very strong to have lasted this long. If anyone can help it’s Master Katara..”
“she’s the best healer in the world.” You both ended in unison a soft silence comes between the two of you before your sister speaks again.
“so you’re in close company with Avatar Korra. Did you meddle in that too?” she smirks, and you roll your eyes. Your sister always teasing you on how you like to meddle in things especially a hit on the fight that caused your burned scars. “actually no, I didn’t. We kept bumping into each other so why not become friends” you quip. Your sister shakes her head as a fellow healer walks over and whispers in her ear, “ok, I’ll head right over” she whispers back to her. “I have to go, be safe, don’t be reckless, and please don’t try to be a hero.” She stresses as she grips your arms to try to stick those words into your head. “oh-kay, mom” you tease her as you smile. “please, I’m way more fun than mom” she nudges you. “Hey…. mom and dad would be so proud of you, y/s/n. As a person and the healer you’ve become. Especially mom.” you smile as you look at your sister whose eyes tear up with the recognition. “They would be proud of you too, y/n. When push comes to shove you always stand up to do the right thing protecting those who are defenseless. Even though it gets you in tough situations. The way you think things through, I don’t know where you got it whether from mom or dad”
“probably a mix of both” you smile
“Mom was never a fan of violence nor was dad, but I know they would be proud as hell to know their daughter is helping the Avatar save the world. I and y/s/s/n are proud too” She smiles squeezing your shoulder as you smile back. The healer from earlier calls for your sister again and she acknowledges the healer as Tenzin, Kya and Bumi walk out of the private room and start heading out the healing hut. “ok, now I really have to go” you nod understanding and let her go. She stops and turns around to look at you “Whoever you have in your life right now. Keep them close. Your aura has changed drastically for the better since the last time I saw you” she smiles again as she waves goodbye to you and goes back to work. You think over your sister’s words and wondering who she’s talking about. You take one more look at your sister smiling with pride then walk out and meet up with Team Avatar and Team Avatar B, or T.A.B. as Bolin calls it. You’re walking down the stairs as you hear Korra reporting her findings “Unalaq’s got the southern portal surrounded. Harmonic Convergence is only a few hours away.”
Tenzin joins in adding to Korra’s urgency on the matter “then we have to break through the enemy lines ourselves and get to the portal now”
“there’s no use in talking anymore. We know what our mission is.”
Bolin sucks in air through his teeth feeling uncomfortable by a lack of plan
“yeah, a suicide mission”
You look at everyone and try to reason with how dumb it is that Tenzin and Korra are wanting to go aggressive in their plan of attack. “it won’t be a suicide mission if we think this through. We can’t just run in without any sort of plan”
Bumi starts to reminisce on one of his war stories “you know, I was in a similar situation once. My platoon has crawled through the desert with no water for a week, but when we finally located the only oasis for 100 miles, it was surrounded by angry sandbenders. I realized our only chance to get to the water was to drop in from above. So I fashioned together a catapult, and with the help of a few well-trained hog-moneys—” you notice Tenzin’s face starts to shake and his irritation starts to boil over as he explodes
“ENOUGH OF YOUR RIDICULOUS LIES! Can’t you see that the fate of the world and Jinora’s life depends on what we do here today?” Bumi shows a hurt expression as his eyes dart to you when you put your hands up and start to speak to stop Tenzin from blowing up any further “Hold on, I get that was a long story, but Bumi made a valid point and I think it could work...”
“he did?!” Kya’s eyes widen as she looks at you confused that you made sense of one of his outrageous stories.
“yes, drop from above…an air attack. No one would expect us to hit from the sky”
“Hold on. Maybe Bumi’s right. We don’t have a catapult and hog-monkeys, but we have a flying bison, and there’s a plane on Varrick’s ship. Maybe we can attack from above.”
Korra looks at you and Asami “What are you thinking?” you glance at Asami giving her a nod
“Mako, Bolin, y/n and I can use the plane to create a distraction and scatter some of the defenses. You, Tenzin, Bumi, and Kya can fly into the spirit portal on Oogi when you see an opening.”
“Let's get moving.” Everyone nods understanding the plan.
*
Mako and Bolin stand on either wing while Asami gets in the cockpit to drive the plane. You…you decide you’re going to ride the plane on top of the upper wing like you’re surfing it. Yeah I’m totally not being reckless right now. You bend your cables to wrap around the wings and then it wraps around your waist for added stability and further ground yourself to the plane. The plane takes off and soon you meet up with Oogi and the gang,
Asami looks at the three of you and starts asking if everyone is ready.
“I'm an earthbender strapped to the wing of a plane hundreds of feet in the air, so, no?” Bolin hollers against the air currents hitting against us “Aw come on Bolin, this is fun! I feel like an airbenders” You smile as you maintain a grip on the cables. “Don't worry. There's no way they'll be expecting this.” Mako calls out as the clouds start to clear from your view and you see the spirit portal coming into view but there seems to be something flying around the beam of light. “what is that?” you yell out wondering if anyone is seeing the scene in front of you. “Yeah, but do you see that!” Bolin yells back pointing at the circular defense formation around the portal as he holds on tighter on the wing of the plane “I think they were expecting it!” You look down and see the defense of waterbenders and mecha-tanks ready to prepare to fire at you. You ground yourself then watch as large sharp pieces of ice coming in your direction and your eyes widen as you drop down on the stomach to avert getting stabbed. Asami jerks the plane moving out of the way, Mako, Bolin and you try to hold on tight as you guys yell “Asami!”. Asami prepares to maneuver the plan to dodge the attacks coming your way until she gets closer to the camp and orders Mako to fire. Asami makes another turn around then heads back to the camp to get Bolin start throwing explosives and then detonates them using a remote detonator. You guys keep this plan of attack going throwing explosives and Mako’s fire throwing causing as much destruction to the camp as possible. Giving Korra and the rest of the team an opportunity to get into the spirit portal. Bolin watches the camp in flames and exclaims “I wish Varrick was filming this. (makes a fist pump) We could call it "Nuktuk: Sky Warrior"! Bolin raises his fist in the air triumphantly. You throw another explosive “Now’s not the time, Bolin!” as you press the remote again and another series of explosions go off. Something urges you to look behind and you peer over and see two figures chasing you “uh…guys we have company!” before Asami can try to maneuver away Eska and Desna kick splash towards you guys the water blasts freeze into ice and strike the tail, breaking it in two. The tail of the plane explodes, and it goes into a nosedive. “Brace yourselves!” Asami calls out. you prepare for the impact trying to stand up once again on the wing you grunt your teeth waiting for the right time to jump off. You bend your cables off and you jump to prevent getting trampled by the plane and land in the snow hard. You slide across a couple snowed land a couple ten feet from impact and knock out cold.
You’re coming in and out of consciousness as you feel like you’re being dragged and you look up and see Unalaq and you grunt your teeth mustering up your strength and grab his wrists and flip him over into the snow, dropping you and you get up to try to unlock the cuffs but it’s not coming off Platinum “Don’t bother bending yourself out, it’s pure platinum. You didn’t think we would know about you metalbender” Unalaq snared as he sends a splash of water that turns to ice and it hits you at your chest then at your head in a one two punch knocking you back out a slight bruise on the right side of your face. Unalaq and his two creepy kids drop the four of you inside his captain’s quarters. You all grunt once your bodies make impact to the ground and you fall unconscious. “what did you do” Asami looks at you then at Unalaq “she wasn’t cooperating, so she had to be restraint.” Unalaq spoke unbothered by his actions. You wake up from your hit and hear the conversation between Korra and Unalaq you can’t figure out what they’re saying but your hearing clears and you catch Unalaq say “this time, I'll be here to level the playing field. When Harmonic Convergence comes, I will fuse with Vaatu.” Your eyes widen as you turn your head at Unalaq “And together, we will become the new Avatar. A Dark Avatar. Your era is over.” Tonraq leans forward in pain from his injuries looks at his brother both desperate and saddened of his plan.
“Think about what you're doing. I know that you've always had a deep connection with the spirits, but you're still a man. You're still my brother. You're Eska and Desna's father. Are you willing to throw your humanity away to become a monster?”
“I'll be no more of a monster than your own daughter. The only difference is that while she can barely recognize her own spiritual power, I will be in complete alignment with mine. Vaatu and I will be as one”. Unalaq starts raising his voice “No one will be able to stand against us. Keep them locked up.” Unalaq turns to his daughter as Eska turns to her father
“After the Harmonic Convergence, I will come for Korra. “
“Yes, father.”
Tenzin softly speaks his face broken with a newfound sense of lost, with Kya leaning on his shoulder. “I failed in every way. We've lost Jinora forever.”
“There's still a chance. They didn't get Bumi.” Tenzin bows his head and groans, obviously not believing in Bumi at all. You grunt as you turn on your side and sit up “here lean against me, y/n” Asami softly speaks to you as she sits up with you and you guys leans against each other’s sides while Bolin and Mako do the same. “he roughed you up pretty bad, y/n” Bolin commented as he looks over at you. You look confused back at him “what?” then look at Asami and she brings her cuffed hands up to point on her face of the bruise of where yours is. Your curiosity brings your hands up and touch your right side of your temple and it slightly hurts but nothing serious “it doesn’t hurt, it’s just all show. I’m fine. Honestly that drop roughed me up more than those three” you quipped and gave them a small smile to assure them you’re good. Korra looks at her cousins and grunts “we’re wasting time we need to get out of here” she whispers to the group then speaks up “Eska, Desna, listen to me. You've got to help us stop Unalaq. I know he's your father, but Vaatu has made him completely crazy.” Eska and Desna turn to face you guys “We will never turn on our father.”
“Please, if you let me out now, I can still stop him from destroying everything. Once he fuses with Vaatu, no one will be safe. Desna, he won't be your father anymore.”
Desna narrows his eyes, then moves to confront Korra angrily by her words “You don't know what you're talking about! Our father is the wisest man in the world, if he says what he is doing is right, I believe him.”
You plant your palms on the ground as you push yourself up to sit straighter, but you feel a slight rumble in the ground. “hmm?” you plant your hand firmer on the ground and it seems to grow gradually “uh…what’s going on outside?” you ask turning up to Desna and Eska “what human?” you eye her weirdly but keep going “there’s something going on outside I can hear the earth rumbling of something big outside” Bolin moves and puts his ear against the ground and feels the vibrations “oh yeah it’s big”
Desna and Eska look at each other “quit your foolish ba--” your eyes dart to the front of the camp as you and everyone’s heads perk up as you hear a shriek get louder as it approaches the tent to see Bumi spinning in a mecha-tank seat comes crashes into Eska and Desna both from behind, knocking them flat on their backs while he come to a complete stop in front of the group “All right, guys. Rescue time!” he grins as Naga and Pabu jump in the tent knocking Desna and Eska yet again and pins them to the ground.
“that’s quite the entrance, Bumi” you quipped giving him a smirk while everyone else has their jaws dropped shocked to see Bumi alive and well. Bumi starts helping to free everyone as Asami takes out a pin from her hair and helps get you out of yours. Mako and Bolin help Tonraq and everyone steps out as your eyes widen at the scene. The whole encamped is crushed and in flames “Bumi, how did you manage to take out this entire encampment on your own?” Tenzin asks his older brother in disbelief and Bumi reaches in his shirt and pulls out his flute to show Tenzin “I did it all with my trusty flute and- “he hangs his head low in despair “Oh, never mind. You wouldn't believe it anyway.” he begins marching, leading the group away. “Let's get moving” he waves the group out of the camp and you jog up to reach Bumi putting a hand on his shoulder “Hey, Bumi, I believe it. I mean sure you exaggerate a tad, but I think this story will be your best one yet” you smile as you remove your hand and follow the group heading towards the spirit portal.
Tonraq tries to say that he will fight whoever will come after Korra, but he is in no condition to fight. He can barely walk let alone stand. Korra encourages her father to go back to the healing hut and asks Asami to take her father on Oogi which Asami accepts willingly. Korra and Tonraq embrace exchanging I love you and Asami, Tonraq and Oogi take off. Korra’s plan was Tenzin and his siblings go in search for Jinora while Mako and Bolin guard the portal in case anyone comes. You were welcomed to join whoever you wanted to help while Korra closes the portal, so Vaatu can't escape.
Bolin speaks up nervous “Wait a second. Worst-case scenario: So we're fighting Unalaq, you close the portals, and let's just say something happens to you, are we gonna be trapped in there for eternity?”
“If everything goes as planned, we'll all walk out together after Harmonic Convergence. If not... “. Somber expressions appear on everyone’s faces as Korra bows her head and sighs, then looks up at the group.
“it’s an honor fighting alongside all of you. I don’t regret anything” you speak making eye contact with everyone before landing your eyes at Korra and nods
“Let's go.”
*
Everyone runs into the portal and make it into spirit world. This is not what I was expecting the spirit world to look like. It looks so dark and evil. Your eyes dart to the front of you and there’s a massive tree where a large spirit is trapped inside with Unalaq standing beside it. “Tenzin, go find Jinora!” Korra yells as Tenzin nods and calls for his siblings “Come on!” you look at the young adults ahead of you then at the older group and decide to join Tenzin they have Bolin maybe the siblings will require your earthbending. “I’ll join you; you might need my bending and detective skills. No time to argue” you come with your logic before Tenzin tries to rebuttal he nods, and you guys start running off. You look up at the sky as you’re running with the Kataang kids as you watch the sky turn into a deep purple then feel the earth shift you’re trying to regain balance. You slightly tumble on the ground as it shakes stronger than before, but you push yourself up quickly without skipping a beat and keep running. Your mind races back to Lin and hope she’s safe. For Raava’s sake and mine please be safe Lin.
*
Harmonic Convergence has commenced, and a purple light blankets the landscape in the whole world. The purple light covers Republic City, Lin as she holds her hands in front of her, protecting her eyes from the wind as the dark energy sweeps over her, rendering her and her surroundings in a dark purple hue. Lin looks up toward the sky, and sees green lights dancing in the purple atmosphere. Her eyes widening as she fills with worry “y/n….” she mutters under her breath “…please be ok”. Lin was keeping her part of the deal and was hoping that you were doing the same. Hoping you were safe so you can return to the Republic City. She was really hoping that you were alive and safe so you can come back to her. Please be okay, y/n.

So, after a few weeks i'm finally at the finale.
The Phoenix King
Excuse me, mister phoenix fire bitch king Ozai, sir, your enormous ego makes me cackling like a kindergardener that just heard a swear word. This man is just insufferable. But yeah, he is a human being (and once he was an innocent (cute?) baby) and Aang is right with not wanting to kill him. Like, they really never talked about this, and they all act like it's one of the easiest thing to do. I know that fandom likes to jokes about how Toph and Zuko we're killing people and the rest of gaang was more than oblivious to that, but seriosusly, none of them - and i mean all gaang - never killed not even a one person. Probably. As far as i know/remember. I realize that fate of the whole world is lying on their backs, but i also know that they know better than to shaming Aang not wanting to be a murderer and they fuckin know that they're not helipng with such agression.
They didn't tell Zuko about their plans to attack after the comet, so Zuko didn't tell them what his father want to do with the comet. And now The Avatar is missing and you have no time to loose. That's what happens when people do not talk to each other! Buuut Ozai plans towards comet sound kinda... important? Big? Dangerous? Looks like Zuko should tell the rest about that anyway.
But hell, they really wanted to wait out this whole comet thing and attacket later? Like, why?! They really expected that the fire lord wouldn't use it's power to do something crazy? Because he already conquered Ba Sing Se? And that's all? He won the war? What? Cooome on, Katara, Sokka, you're smarter than this. ):
Toph was way too happy about throwing flaming rocks at her freinds. And she moulded a whole Ba Sing Se in sand. With the earth king and his bear looking just like they look. Girl, that is some crazy memory superpower.
👏 Give 👏 Toph 👏 her 👏 life 👏 changing 👏 trip 👏 with 👏 Zuko 👏
I have a really hard time with believing that Azula is just 14. Aang and Toph are just 12? Ok. Katara is 14 and Sokka 15? Sure thing. Zukos 16? Yes. And uh, Azula is also 14. And i'm like... you lost me.
Gay disaster mister avatar tracking master be like "i know what to do" and he takes all his friends to meet a powerhouse lesbian.
The Old Masters
Welcome to the family grampgramp!
Seriously, Paku does not deserve such precious grandchildren.
And also seriosuly, master Pianado is not that old. He's fine and middle aged. How dare you.
Bumi can bend with just his face. He can bend a whole house. And then throw a whole house. What a man. No wonder he can just like that proclaim himself as a king. Who would forbid that to him? Aaaand, do firebenders didn't knew that eclipse would take bending powers away from them? Is this some forbidden knowledge?
Uncle Iroh, i'm really start to doubting your wisdom and common sense. You really want to leave Zuko all alone when he become fire lord? I guess that since Zuko himself recognizes his mistakes and choose the right path Iroh thinks that he's ready to be responsible enough and take lead of a whole nation. Yes. Of course. ...Nooo, no no, i would never leave my baby boy like that. But i'm a dumbass and except moral support i wouldn't be much help with ruling. But an old man having his pai sho plays every day is more important. I'm let down. ):
I read how lionturtle and his gift to Aang is just an easy and lazy deus ex machina and... no? No really? Well, yes, it was easy for Aang to just being gifted with energybending and not needed anymore to kill Ozai, but it makes sense in this world and do not came out of nowhere. Aang was so conflicted about possibility that he must kill someone, that he unconsciously seeked help from spirits. The lionturtle do not came to Aang, he didn't even know that there's a human on hic back. Aang asked him for guidance and help, and lionturltle did excatly that - he helped the avatar with his dillema. Easy. Well, i'm guessing that Aang don't know yet what excatly happened and didn’t feel different. Also, Aangs moral dillema about killing another human is just *double chef kiss*. ATLA aired more than 10 years ago and even now it's rather rare to see something like that on show for kids.
But also, all these past avatars we're rather useless. You need to be more active avatar Aang. You need to bring justice. You need to do something. Blah blah blah. These are not really substantive tips. Maybe expect that aribender avatar lady. She also didn't really helped Aang with his problem, but at least she said something new and meaningful.
Into the Inferno
All these firebenders flying around like they have jetpacks is just hysterical. And yes Toph, yes, that's A LOT of fire. I also like how they used a sound of flamethrower in firebending scenes.
Banishment for you. Banishment for you! Banishment for everybody! ...aaand idk, for me Azula slipping away was a little to fast? Maybe if we saw some some scenes with her between “The Boilin Rock” and this it would hit harder/better? Idk. I don’t really feel her. And when she's drawed LIKE THAT i have even harder time believing that she's just 14.
Oh, i like so much music choice during Azulas and Zukos agni kai. When Aang and Ozai are fighting there's proper battle music, but during agni kai scenes music was sad, emotional and dramatic, not only accentuating tragedy of this situation, but also how Zukos and Azulas personal fight is different from Aangs and Ozai. NICE.
Avatar Aang
And that's why you do not mess with the avatar! Fuck him up Aang!
But lol, how funny it is that Aangs cosmic chakra was unlocked absolutely by stupid accident? Ozai that one particular thing bring wholly oh himself. And oh, Aang knew how this whole energybending works buts still was hesistant to use it because it could be too dangerous to him and he left it at the very end, if he had no other choice. Understandable.
Aang is the best avatar, there's no discussion. When all past avatars went down to absolutely obliterate Ozai and Aang standed up to all of them? NICE.
Hmmm, there's one good thing about loser lord Ozai. His hair game. This thick mane is truly impressive. It's almost on disneys Pocahontas level when it's flowing on wind. And then he got roasted by a bunch of goofy kids. Beautiful.
Yes Sokka, it's amazing that Toph invented metalbending. You have no idea how much.
Katara taken down Azula in a very smart way. Can i get a wahoo for Katara? WAHOO!
That open plot with Ursa feels... unnecessary? Do they planned comics at this point? Like, if you're not going to resolve this in the show then why even keeping her alive? I guess that this is in presupposition, that Zuko is going to find her and bring home and they're going to be all happy and nice but idk. Maybe it would felt differently for me if i didn't know how this was resolved in the comics. :/
Ty Lee was like GIRLS, and girls we're like YES. You go, you funky little lesbian.
Aaaah, it felt so rewarding and satisfying when Aang immobilized Ozai, put a whole laser show and then calmly put down this whole fire around them. Closing scenes after that we're good, but emotionally? Aangs being at peace immediately after fight bringed me peace. My skin is clean, my crops are thriving and all that smooth jazz. So good. Such good finale. I can't believe that. Honestly, i don’t remember the last time when i felt so good after finishing something.
...and they needed to ruin it at the very last seconds. Well, not like, ruin it whole, but scratched it enough. Aang walks on porch, Katara joins him, they look at each other and blush, they see how calm the world is right now and how good and beautiful it is, they hug each other, it nice and cute and just good. And it should end right here. Because this kiss really feel like reward and it's... icky a little.

Bonus chapter of "Tangled in Red"! (That metaphysical smutfic with Bumi and my OC.)
Rating: Explicit (No Archive Warnings Apply)
Words: 9,992
Setting: Republic City, 176 AG (post-canon)
Now for a snippet~!
Very quickly, it became undeniable that there was a new link between them, so thick it felt like he could almost grab it in his hands.
He can’t, obviously, but Hana can.
He can feel it right now, a joyful rush while they huddle together in an alcove on Air Temple Island, immune to the chill of the courtyard. While Lucky, Hana’s young dragon-horse, gnaws on a flagstone she yanked out of a walking path somewhere, the lovers conspire silently. Bumi runs his fingers through her hair and gazes deep into her eyes, which a slightly removed part of himself knows must make him look like the most lovesick dope who’s ever lived, but who’s he trying to impress? Every brush of his skin against hers is a sigh.
“It should be safe, now that it—” Her moving mouth draws him in, and he cuts her off with a shallow sloppy kiss that dissolves into a fumble of lips and steam. She braces the sides of his face with her hands and wrestles back a bit of breathing room. “Do you wanna hear the plan, or not?”
“Yeah… Sorry…”
“No, you’re not,” she says with a smirk. “But I was about to say, now that it’s past lunchtime, my place should be free and clear. Until lunchtime tomorrow.”
“Hope it won’t cause too much trouble shooing everyone off.”
“Nah. I mean, they can do a lot of the work at home. Now that we’ve passed the trial stage, we’re in the middle of reviewing applications for the first stage of the real-ass housing project, so most of them took a box to compare notes on tomorrow.”
“Y’know, I probably don’t say it enough, but I think it’s amazing what you’re doing with all that. Using that penthouse for an office, even.”
Hana gives a little half-shrug. “What’s the point of having nouveau riche real estate tycoons for parents if you can’t leverage it into something useful?” Her hands slip down his neck and over the chest of his wingsuit. “Not terribly conducive to privacy, though.”
“Ain’t that the truth.” Bumi puts his hands over hers and mushes their foreheads together.
“Mmmm, so I can call a water taxi—”
“Why don’t we just fly?”
“Ah…” Hana turns to look at the pony-sized dragon-horse, now curled around the stolen flagstone. “I don’t trust Lucky to be able to carry me back. You didn’t see, but she was really struggling on the way here. I know a good taxi service, if I can just get to a phone. They handle dock transfers and everything.”
“Well, make it quick. I got jizz leakin’ outta my ears over here.”
“EW!” Hana whirls back on him and swats his arm in mock disgust.
He guffaws, surprised by his own volume, and pretends to rub a freshly bruised bicep. That was kinda sexy, actually. Maybe they could try—
“What was that?” chirps a voice from above. Bumi’s niece Ikki lands daintily next to Lucky and leans over to stroke the sleepy thing’s downy mane.
Horrified at what the kid—no matter how old she gets, always a kid to him—almost overheard, Bumi flinches. Both Ikki and Hana smile at him serenely, expectantly. “Oh! Uh, I just said… Golly wizz, over the years out here, it’s been… great!”
Hana’s grin widens. “I love you.”
“Awww!” says Ikki. Then she giggles, a sound like tinkling bells, and adds, “And I thought you said something dirty!”

"Aren't you a little young to know what that kind of heartbeat means?" retorted Katara with a nervous laugh, composing herself while Zuko was still opening and closing is mouth like a gaping fish. Toph had just metal bent her way into his private arena while he and Katara were getting more than comfortable in one another's arms.
Toph stood taller than either had seen her, and had lost much of her childish fat, leaving her much thinner and more shapely than before. Her figure could even be described as delicate when she wore some of her traditional dresses — but she was rarely seen to do so.
"Ha!" she replied, flicking her head so that some of her bangs moved from her face, "I'm fifteen…Tell me Sugar Queen, how old were you with Jet?" Toph grinned broadly. She already knew she had won this.
"I… That's beside the point! It was war, we could have died any day!" defended Katara, feeling her face redden.
"Yeah well, Sweetness, you weren't the only one who grew up during the war — we're all children of conflict here and we all grew up far too fast. But, whatcha gonna do about it - I was never going to get my kicks from normal things! Might as well enjoy what we've got - I see you two are taking that on board," she said nonchalantly but with a strange drawn expression hovering over her features.
It was true. All of them had been thrown into a world that adults found hard to navigate. They were all too young and too innocent — but somehow, against all odds, they had survived. But surviving had cost them their innocence and their childhood. There they stood, considering their lives and the way they had been affected. Toph, 15 years old, had fought against her parents' captivity and left home at 12. Katara, now 17, had taken her mother's place at far too young an age. Zuko, 19, had never felt his father's love and had been banished at the age of 13. The start of each of their journeys had thrown them together at the hardest of times. None of them could relate to a normal child's found solace in other people like themselves, but mostly in one another. There was no need for explanations for their sadness when they remembered the war, nor pity when they confessed what had happened to them. Simply understanding and camaraderie.
They snapped out of their reverie as Katara approached Toph and threw her arms around her. Surprisingly, Toph didn't squirm away as she usually did - instead she hugged her back tightly, feeling tears prickling behind her eyes. She had missed them. This was her true family after all.
"I'm glad you have clothes on Sweetness! Not that I would have minded…" she added. Katara considered the girl in front of her.
"Do you play for both sides Toph?" asked Katara, slightly surprised. She had never noticed this preference in her friend before.
"Mmmm you could say that. You want to watch out Fire Prince Sparky," she giggled, winking at him. "Right, well I will leave you to get decent and meet you in that room with all the cushions and tea," she said confidently. "I'll take my hug from you when you are less ah… preoccupied with other things… Bye!" and with that she bent her way out the same way she came.
"I'm fine now!" Zuko called after her. He was still standing where he and Katara had been embraced, and looked stunned at the exchange that had just happened. Since when had these girls he had grown up with become so open and confident about their sexuality?
Katara walked back to him, apparently at ease now, and wrapped her arms around him for a quick kiss.
"Katara you know I can't stay long with you and Toph… I've got those reports from the colonies to get through," he said regretfully. Although he would have preferred it if Toph had not interrupted them, spending time with the two girls was second on his list of things he would rather be doing.
"No, I understand. At least stay for a cup of tea?" she asked, looking up at him hopefully. He kissed her nose gently.
"One cup," he promised. Katara smiled up at him. "Why do we always get interrupted though!" he moaned as they walked out of the arena. "I build a fucking impenetrable metallic arena and of course the world's only metal bender has to arrive," he grumbled half to himself.
Zuko couldn't keep his one-cup-of-tea promise before being called away, leaving Toph and Katara alone to catch up.
"So, Sweetness, heard what happened with you and that general…" started Toph. She was never one to be subtle about hard conversations. Katara sighed, forcing down another gulp of tea.
"It was a captain. How did you hear about that?" she asked quietly. Toph shrugged.
"News spreads pretty quickly when you know what to listen for. Although I think the story may have been exaggerated somewhat… One version makes you some merciful saviour while the next tells of the bloodthirsty water bender! Did you really skewer him with an icicle eight feet long?" She was leaning forward now, all interest and excitement. Katara let out the breath she had been holding quietly - Toph wanted to talk about the Agni Kai, not the reason for it.
"No, I did not! I did trap him in a ball of water suspended in the air until he almost drowned…" Toph made an appreciative noise, "But I didn't kill him - I spared him his life. His admiral killed him when he had lost and still attacked me. You aren't supposed to do that in an Agni Kai and apparently its a big deal."
"You didn't kill him? Why? He fucking deserved it!" grumbled Toph, slightly put out by the lack of violence.
"It was supposed to be a political move; as in if he could rot in a deep, dark jail for the rest of his life then people might get the message that it is not alright and not pass it off as personal revenge… as it turned out, though, the admiral's finale brought much more attention to the situation. I hope it sends a message," she explained bitterly.
"I think it did. There are little girls all over wanting to be you! They were doing it all wrong though, I had to teach them to be more bossy!" Toph grinned as Katara punched her playfully in the arm.
"How are you though Toph? What have you been doing?"
"Eh, this and that. Mama and papa Bei Fong have finally accepted the fact that I'm my own person, so at least that is sorted out." Toph took a sip of her tea.
"That's wonderful Toph! Its good you can go back to your family. You really missed them," encouraged Katara, not without sadness at the thought of the split in her own family since she had met her father in the North Pole.
"They still need work, but I'm happy about it. Other than that I've just been travelling and rebuilding. I spent a lot of time in Omashu with Bumi - I love that guy! He's amazing! And… eh… yeah. I can't compete in the Earth Rumble anymore because apparently 'it isn't a competition if you always win'," Toph made a face, "Those stupid cowardly bastards! I'll tell you what though, I'm sort of craving something long to do. I've… I've not been happy recently. Maybe happy isn't the right word. Maybe 'content' is a better word. I just feel like there is something missing," she looked down at her hands, a sadness lining her features that made her look much, much older than she was.
"Oh Toph," said Katara quietly, reaching out and taking her hand.
"Its alright. I'm not the type to give in… I just… I guess I'm just a little lost," she admitted, a familiar lump rising in her throat. Somewhere in the back of Toph's mind a younger version of herself was horrified at her breaking down in front of Katara - but a wiser version told her that Katara was probably the only person who could help her. She had been more of a mother to her than her own mother, and she needed someone - anyone - to understand. Katara had gone through shit, so she would probably get it… right? "I just, I don't know if I can ever find a path again," she continued, letting tears slide out of her sightless eyes. "Its as if everything is dull - like I'm feeling everything through sand and I'm stumbling around in the middle of nowhere!" she choked out. She felt Katara shift and found herself wrapped in the older girl's arms.
"I know how it feels," she cooed into Toph's black hair, "everything is distant and you can't connect to reality. You feel like you've been swallowed up somewhere and you might never feel the sunlight on your skin again. You are cold even in the sweltering heat, and physical pain hardly affects you at all. You try everything to force some life back into your system but nothing works." Toph nodded into her shoulder, overcome by an intense gratefulness for Katara's understanding.
"But you are still here Toph, and you will get through this. It is horrible and affects every part of your life, but I'll help you. Stay here for a while? Zuko and I know very well how you are feeling. You shouldn't be alone right now," she continued gently, rocking Toph in her arms.
"Thank you K—Katara!" sobbed Toph, shaking in her arms.
"Hey, thats what we do for family," she whispered, her own throat closing at her words.
Toph had fallen asleep instantly after her exhausting day. Katara listened for her light snoring at her door before walking past and heading for Zuko's rooms. She knocked but received no answer, and so peaked in to find the room still dark and uninhabited. Quietly, she entered, shutting the door behind her and lighting the candles adorning the room.
It was late. Where was he?
She looked around his room and settled in one of the armchairs to wait. However, as time ticked on, she became uncomfortable and drifted to the large double bed. She lay down on it - just to see what it was like - she told herself. As soon as her head touched the soft pillow, though, she too fell asleep.
Zuko finished reading through the uselessly detailed reports very late into the night. He made a note to hire somebody to go through the reports for him and only hand him the ones that were worth reading. Sighing, he put out the lights and wondered towards his room. He frowned. There was light coming from under his door…
Slowly, he crept to the room and pushed the door ajar quietly to peak in. He relaxed as he took in the half melted candles and a sleeping Katara on his bed. He felt an inexplicable surge of pride at the sight of her in his bed. Zuko hovered in the doorway, unsure whether to take her back to her room or to leave her sleeping as she was. He bit his lip. He should ask.
Gently, he tapped her shoulder and called her name. Her eyes cracked open, before she realised where she was and she sat up blinking away the cobwebs of sleep.
"I didn't mean to wake you completely - I just wanted to know if you wanted to stay here or if you wanted me to take you back to your room?" he asked, taking in the image of a sleepy, messy-haired Katara with amusement.
"I… We need to talk Zuko," she said, yawning.
"I think we should wait till tomorrow morning - you look like you're about to nod back off!" he said mockingly, taking off his outer robes and shoes.
Katara shook her head.
"No, we need to talk now while Toph is asleep!" she insisted. He sighed and sat cross legged across from her on the bed, waiting to hear what she had to say. A part of him was disappointed that she only wanted to talk, but he smothered that train of thought.
"Toph is depressed. Seriously depressed or she wouldn't have talked to me about it. I'm very worried about her Zuko. She was so young during the war!" Zuko sighed.
"We were all young during the war, Katara," he reminded her.
"Yes, I know. But we have all found some sort of a path; you as Fire Prince, Sokka as future Chief, Suki as Kyoshi Leader and future Cheifess, Aang as restorer of the Air Nation and me with this whole research thing. We've had our down times but we've all created something to keep ourselves occupied, to fill the void opened up during the fighting. Toph hasn't. All her projects were short term and she's lost, left to face her demons with no distractions. We need to do something!"
Zuko considered her words. She was right. Toph was possibly the most powerful and yet the most lost one of all of them. And she was still so young!
"She can stay here for as long as she likes, just to calm down and find her way?" he suggested. And Iroh would adore having her around.
"I was… see I was thinking, what if we - uh - taught her?" Zuko's eyes widened in realisation.
"Do you think that's wise? I mean its already a risk that there are two of us practicing fire and water every day!" And , he added mentally, we wouldn't get to have fun on our own!
"I've been thinking about it a lot. Yue said that not everybody is like us and that we are drawn to one another like the tides. Well, the tides are turning with everything I have discovered and everything we have learned. And suddenly Toph appears wanting some reason, some mission, some meaning to who she is. When I teach you blood bending you will be able to feel it too, but she is just as strong as either of us, you know. I've been observing and not everybody is like this; the other fire benders have sort of chi pooled in the areas typical of fire bending. That means that even if I were to redirect their chi flow, hardly any would reach the other patterns. You and I, though, we have equal amounts of chi flowing throughout - and so does Toph. I don't know why. I've been thinking about this since we spoke to Yue…" she trailed off, looking to him for his reaction.
Zuko considered it. To learn earth bending would be incredible. It would give Toph something about herself she never knew, and it would further whatever this was Yue was letting them do. On the other hand, the more people knew, the more people risked finding out. Although, Toph was as tough as they came and would defend their secret to the end.
"Don't you think it is a little dangerous teaching a blind girl to shoot fire?" he asked. It wasn't an objection exactly - just a consideration. He had already accepted Katara's proposal.
"I've been thinking about that too; the way you felt the heat in the room today - it was like I feel the moisture. If there is anything Toph is good at it is feeling things she can't see. Maybe she wouldn't have to bend fire - she could learn to understand heat like she learned to understand earth."
"It would give her a new way to see," he said, half to himself. Katara nodded. Zuko sucked in a breath, screwing up his courage. They were walking a very thin, very dangerous line as it was.
"When do we start," he asked. Katara looked relieved at his acceptance.
"Well there is no point starting tomorrow - we would have hardly slept and we need all the concentration we can get! Maybe tomorrow we can talk to her about everything. She might not want to be a part of this, after all. And then if she does we can start the day after?"
"You're right. She won't be responsive until lunch though, so we can talk her through things then?" he reasoned. Katara nodded in agreement and smiled at him.
Zuko frowned as something occurred to him. "You know its not actually that late right? We could still get enough sleep to do our routine…" he suggested. Secretly, he wanted to spend some time alone with her before Toph started interrupting everything.
"I know what the time is. I was kind of thinking that if I stayed here tonight we probably wouldn't end up getting so much sleep. But if you'd rather train, I can go now," she said lightly, turning as if to leave.
"No, no!" he cried, a little too quickly. Ah yes, the good old show-her-how-desperate-you-are-trick. Well done, Zuko. You sound even more pathetic then usual! He cleared his throat awkwardly. "I mean, who needs training right? I don't, in fact, I can function really well without any…"
He was cut off by Katara's laugh and the now-familiar sensation of her lips on his. Pulling her close and under the covers, he snuffed out the candles with a flick of his wrist and decided that his bed was far better with her in it.
Neither really remembered how they had got to their underwear, nor did they care where their discarded clothes had disappeared to. Zuko ran his hands all over her exposed skin, memorising the patterns of her body; the feel of her ribs through her skin, the arch of her back, the curves of her legs as they wrapped around him. He felt Katara doing the same, but she seemed to enjoy the feeling of his chest and stomach most of all. He rolled them so she was on top of him and she could have access as much as she liked. She seemed to enjoy it.
It was slightly unfair that his chest was exposed and hers wasn't. No, unfair was the wrong expression. It was simply annoying. He wondered how far he could go before she asked him to stop. However, when she started kissing his jawline and letting her teeth graze his skin, he decided it was worth trying.
He ran his fingers all around her top wrappings, trying to find an opening, but cursed under his breath when he couldn't find it. Katara had stilled under his touch and was laughing slightly at his fumbling fingers. Gently, she took one of his hands and guided it to the middle of the front of the wrappings, letting him feel the slight bulge of the coiled cloth. He pinched it and pulled, letting the rest unravel and be pushed aside.
Zuko regretted having snuffed the candles. He wanted to see her! But there would be time for that, he hoped, at another point. The important thing now was that she was comfortable. Slowly, she lowered herself so she was once again lying on top of him, but this time instead of the rough cloth, he could feel her warm breasts pressed against him. He caressed them gently, savouring their softness on his fingertips. He decided to change their position again so she was below him and he could explore her with his tongue. Her nipples hardened under his kisses, and in a daring move he trailed his lips lower.
Suddenly, he encountered rough skin where there had been only smooth before. It took him a split second to realise these were her burns! He gently explored the whole area, ignoring her stiffening at his attention. There were lots, he realised with dismay. Many more than the ones he had half-glimpsed that day in training. They stretched across her whole width, just underneath her breasts - many were small, some were larger, but he knew they would all have burned just the same.
He carefully kissed as many burns as he could find, feeling her relaxing under his touch. It struck him as though this were destined to happen ever since she touched his scar underneath Ba Sing Se. She had offered to heal him and he was doing his best to heal her now.
She gently pulled on his shoulders to signal to him to rise back up her body, and kissed him with a ferocity he had not felt from her before. He vaguely noticed that her face was slightly damp with salty tears as she caressed the burned side of his face.
They did not go any further together, not wanting to ruin the beauty of the moment with something that may turn out to be emotionally disastrous. That was more than fine though, this was far more than either had ever expected to experience.
Tired but more comfortable than either had been in a long time, they fell asleep curled in one another's arms.

WIP Fic Whenever: Atlamorphs 3
WIP Fic Friday Whenever is a place where I will put a ‘quick and dirty’ first draft of either a short story or a chapter from a longer story. This will hopefully encourage me to improve my writing output. An Animorphs/Avatar: the Last Airbender Crossover. Yes it’s strange.
This Isn’t Fun
(Tell me. What is this… Avatar?)
“A being of great power. One with control over all the elements. The humans believe that he or she is a kind of god incarnate.”
(And yet this Avatar is a human?)
“Yes, but extremely powerful. The current one destroyed almost the entire Fire Nation naval fleet, which, though exceptionally primitive, was the most powerful one on this planet.”
(I want him alive.)
“Yes, Visser.”
-------------------------------
My name is Aang, and believe it or not, I used to be a normal kid. I went to lessons and played airball with my friends and flew on my bison. All I ever worried about was whether it was going to rain and spoil the day’s flying or not.
That was like a lifetime ago.
That was a lifetime ago. Even more than that.
You see, I’m the Avatar. Usually the monks would have waited until I was sixteen to tell me, but I guess they must have been worried about the Fire Nation, because they told me early. Everything changed, then. Everyone treated me differently. I couldn’t play with my friends anymore, and they thought my mentor, Monk Gyatso, was being too easy on me. They were going to separate us, and I… I couldn’t handle it. I was upset, so I ran away. It was the last time I ever saw the other airbenders.
I got trapped in an iceberg, and slept in there for a hundred years. And meanwhile, this horrible war started. I need to stop it.
But before I can face down the Fire Lord, I need to learn all four elements. I have air down pretty well, and I’m learning water. Earth is next, and I’m going to learn it from my old (really old) friend, Bumi. An Earth Kingdom general named Fong was going to escort us to Omashu safely.
We’d been flying southeast for several days, when Sokka suddenly yelled; “There it is!”
Appa rounded the mountain top, and Fong’s fort came into view. We were pretty far into the Fire Nation territories at the time, and seeing Earth Kingdom colors was a real relief.
The fort was round, with walls coming from four sides and a big tower in the middle. I guided Appa to the roof of the tower, where I could see some people waiting, including a man with a huge beard.
I got off Appa along with Katara and Sokka, grimacing. I’d been sitting in the saddle for ages, and my backside was really sore. I was so preoccupied with my discomfort that I almost missed what the man with the huge beard was saying.
“Welcome, Avatar Aang! I am General Fong.” The general bowed deeply. “And welcome to all of you, great heroes! Appa! Momo! Brave Sokka! The mighty Katara!”
“Mighty Katara?” mused Katara. “I like that.”
Well, it looked like our reputation preceded us. I gave the general a grin, and heard whistling and booms from behind us. Earthbenders were lighting fireworks that burst in the air, making a spectacular show. I was amazed that they’d made such an effort, just for us.
“Not bad, not bad!” remarked Sokka.
“Now, if you’re ready, we can get down to business,” said the General.
“Business?” asked Sokka. “You mean going to Omashu, right?”
“Of course, of course,” smiled the General. “Omashu will be waiting for you! But first, I would be honored if you would have a look at our underground fortifications.”
Fortifications? “Um, I really don’t know much about-”
“Ah,” he interrupted. “But I’m sure you’ll find them quite interesting.”
I looked at Sokka and Katara. They looked as confused as I did. “Well… I guess we could have a look.”
General Fong smiled. “Excellent! Please, follow me.”
We went with General Fong down a long, spiraling staircase, past one floor after the other. Behind us came Fong’s soldiers, walking in perfectly straight rows without speaking.
We eventually came to a stone door, which General Fong grabbed and slid smoothly to the side. Behind the stone was a short passage and another door, a metal one. This was a little strange, since earthbenders can’t bend metal, and they usually like to build with what they can bend. Which makes sense- after all, why do more work than you have to?
General Fong waited for all the soldiers to file inside the space between the two doors. One of the soldiers slid the door closed behind us.
Even then, I wasn’t at all scared. I assumed they were just being cautious. Military people are like that, sometimes.
The light was dim, only coming from the glowing crystals set into the ceiling. General Fong smiled. “Do not be alarmed at what you are about to see, Avatar,” he said. “It is a revolutionary new concept, one that will advance the security of the Earth Kingdom like no other.”
“Okay,” I replied, slightly confused.
He pressed his hand to a metal plate, and the door opened.
That was when I started to worry.
Inside the door was a small, raised pool of some kind of liquid. It was not water, definitely not. It was dark and sludgy and seething. A pit settled in my stomach. Something was wrong.
“Please step in, Avatar Aang,” said General Fong, every word seeped with respect and graciousness.
“General Fong? I don’t understand. What is this?”
“It is a Yeerk pool.”
At this point, the alarms ringing in my head became deafening.
I heard Sokka swallow a yelp, and Katara gasped.
“A Yeerk-!”
“Let me explain. The Yeerks are our allies from another world.” General Fong’s voice was gentle, like one of the Monks at the temple explaining the rules to a stubborn student. “They have given us the technology and know-how to win this war, once and for all. They will help us, and we will finally defeat the Fire Nation. Isn’t that wonderful?”
Maybe I should back up a bit here. You see, just a few days earlier, we had found a strange creature in a big, metal, flying machine, and he had warned us about this. Not about General Fong specifically, but about Yeerks. He told us that they were creatures from another world, and they were coming to take over our bodies and use us as slaves.
His name was Elfangor, and to help us, he gave us a power, to turn into any animal we touched. He called it ‘morphing.’ We… haven’t used it much. Sokka thought it was too dangerous, because if you stay as an animal for more than two hours, you get stuck that way. So, we agreed not to do it anymore.
Anyway, after Elfangor gave us the power, we had to leave. I don’t know what happened to him after that.
I was backing away from General Fong, my head spinning. This couldn’t be happening. Wasn’t General Fong supposed to help us?
But as we backed away, we hit the wall of soldiers behind us. One put a hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him. He did not return my gaze.
“So what do they want?” spoke up Sokka. “In return for helping us? What’s the catch?”
“Just a small thing,” said General Fong, still calm, still smiling. “Their own bodies are very weak. They need to share ours, or they won’t be able to do anything. If you allow them, they will be able to end the war for us. And we don’t have to do anything!”
“No,” I said.
General Fong’s smile faltered. “No? But why not? Don’t you want to win the war? Don’t you want peace? I thought we were allies, Avatar Aang.”
“Not like this. This isn’t right.” I felt my stomach clench. These Yeerks… they had gotten to General Fong, somehow. Elfangor had warned us about this, too. The Yeerks could posses people and turn them into what he called ‘controllers.’ General Fong could be a controller.
“Are you certain I cannot change your mind?” General Fong continued. “Katara? Sokka? Surely you want to defeat the Fire Nation?”
“Not if it means giving up our freedom,” stated Katara, standing straighter. “And not if it means making pacts with evil spirits.”
General Fong sighed. “It’s a pity you feel that way. Take them.”
Two strong arms wrapped around me, and bodily lifted me up. My eyes went wide. They were manhandling me!
The soldier grabbing me began walking toward the pool, so I inhaled a deep lungful of the stagnant air and blew down, hard. The soldier and I rocketed upwards, and I curled down to brace for the impact. The soldier was taller, so he hit the ceiling first, cushioning me. As his grip weakened, I slipped out, bending the air beneath my feet to float down to the floor.
Back on the ground, Sokka and Katara were having a harder time of it. Katara was struggling, but couldn’t get her hands free to open her waterskin, and Sokka was trying to fend off a soldier with only his boomerang. I moved to help them, but two more soldiers rushed me.
They were wielding swords, so I slipped around them, then answered them with a blast of air that sent them reeling.
“Don’t kill him!” General Fong was shouting. “Don’t kill him don’t kill him!”
The soldiers swiped at my feet, and I quickly flipped out of their way, looking around desperately for a way out. I’d left my staff with Appa, so my airbending was limited, and there wasn’t any water!
Wait.
Once, Katara had bent perfume by manipulating the water in it. If that black stuff was partly water…
I reached out to the pool with my bending, and grabbed it. My feet shifted into a waterbending position and I let loose with a graceful water whip that –
“Stop!”
The soldiers immediately fell back, though I noticed they were still guarding Katara and Sokka. I frowned. What was going on?
Then I noticed. They were all staring at the ‘water’ that I held suspended in the air. I looked at it too. It was smooth and black, like liquid obsidian. And then, as I watched, something dropped out of it with a soft plop. It looked like a large slug.
It was a Yeerk.
I looked at General Fong, aghast. He looked terrified.
“Step on it, Aang!”
I looked up in surprise. It was Sokka, who was pinned to the floor. “Aang! Step on it! Show him you mean it!”
“Be quiet, Human!” barked one of the soldiers, and kicked Sokka in the head.
I shook my head. I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t do it. The Yeerk - and it had to be a Yeerk, it looked exactly like what Elfangor had showed us – was helpless. I couldn’t just kill it, even if it was an evil creature. But… maybe General Fong didn’t know that?
I lifted the orb of yeerk pool liquid higher. General Fong took a step closer.
“Nuh- ah!” I said, and made as if to drop the liquid. He stopped.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with, Avatar,” growled General Fong. “We have powers that you can’t even imagine. Don’t make us your enemies.”
There was another plop as another Yeerk dropped out of the liquid. General Fong flinched.
“Let my friends go,” I demanded. “Let us all go.”
General Fong swallowed, then, looking defeated, nodded.
“Let them go.”
The soldiers released Katara and Sokka, who held his head and groaned. Relief washed over me. It was going to be okay!
“Come on guys,” I said, still hovering the Yeerk liquid. “Let’s get out of here.”
“Let ours go as well,” said General Fong.
I paused. “What?”
General Fong pointed at the Yeerk liquid. “Them. Let them go.”
I supposed that was fair, and moved to let the liquid flow back into the pool. But Sokka's hand on my arm stopped me. “Don’t, Aang. That’s our only way of knowing they won’t kill us as soon as we step out.”
I looked at General Fong, who was gritting his teeth. Another Yeerk plopped out of the liquid.
Sokka was right. They didn’t want us hurting the Yeerks in the liquid, so they wouldn’t hurt us as long as we held them hostage. The whole situation made me feel uneasy.
We backed out of the room, the soldiers opening the doors behind us. I had to really concentrate on keeping the Yeerk liquid suspended while climbing the stairs.
We emerged into the light, followed closely by General Fong and the soldiers, to where Appa was still waiting. He was looking agitated, and flared his nostrils at me.
“Hey, buddy.” I called out softly. “How are you doing? We’re going to leave now, okay?”
Appa snorted, and turned his head to look over the edge of the tower. I looked too, Sokka and Katara guarding my back. On the other side were-
My breath caught in my throat. They were giant metal machines, vaguely insectlike, with spears coming out from the front. What were they? How had we not noticed them before? Had they been brought up while we were down below?
But I couldn’t gawk for long. I climbed onto Appa carefully, trying not to spill the Yeerk liquid. It was very difficult, and I almost lost it several times, which elicited gasps from the gathered soldiers each time. But Katara helped me keep it steady.
I felt as though it was time to say something. “Okay,” I said. “We’re going to go now.”
Another Yeerk fell out of the liquid, into the saddle. All the soldiers watched it as it flopped.
“First, the Yeerks, Avatar.” General Fong’s voice was firm. He tilted his head, and one of the soldiers ran over with an empty bucket. “Just put them in there, and we can both be on our separate ways.”
I looked at Sokka. He bent down and picked up the Yeerk that had fallen out earlier, a look of disgust on his face. “Give the rest back,” he said. “We’ll keep this one.”
“Are you sure that’s-”
“Come on, Aang. Let’s go.”
I poured the rest of the liquid into the bucket, and slid over to Appa’s reins. The soldiers just stood there, watching us as we took off. I allowed myself a sigh of relief. We’d made it.
Then, as we crested the wall of the fort, Katara gasped. I whipped around to see what she was looking at.
One of the machines had lifted into the air, and was following us. It flew smoothly, levitating without any movement. I had no idea how it could do that.
“What, it can fly?” gasped Katara. “What are they– They agreed that we could go!”
“Maybe they decided that capturing us was worth losing one Yeerk,” mused Sokka, glaring at the octosluglike creature he held. Then he stood up.
“Hey!” he called. “Hey!” He waved the Yeerk in his hand around.
“Sokka?” I frowned. “What are you doing?”
“I’m letting them know we mean it.”
Sokka leaned over the saddle and held out the Yeerk, threatening to drop it.
“Sokka, don’t!”
Sokka’s face was grim. “They need to know what they’re risking.”
The Bug Fighter still hovered behind us, matching our speed easily and silently.
I felt tense. I didn’t want Sokka to drop the Yeerk. It was just a slug. It couldn’t hurt anybody, not like that! And if he dropped it from this height, it would die. But was just threatening to drop it so bad, if he didn’t actually do it? I wasn’t sure.
Then, the decision was made for us.
Momo, who had been pacing around the saddle during our getaway, looked up at Sokka as he waved the Yeerk around. Then, in a flash, he jumped onto his arm and scampered down it, grabbed the Yeerk out of Sokka’s hand, and ate it.
We all stared. “Oh, no,” whispered Sokka.
The Bug Fighter sped up, and then it was flying directly above us. I could look up and see the intricate mechanical workings of its belly.
A door opened, where there had been no door before. And out came a monster.
It stood upright, and was covered with what looked like Dao blades, on its arms, legs, long tail, and snakelike neck. It had a beak, and glaring red eyes. I’d never seen a spirit monster like it before.
The monster dropped into the saddle, its huge, horned head less than a foot from my face. “Give up nrreknesh,” it said.
In response, I blasted it in the face with wind.
The monster reeled back, thrown off balance, and Katara water-whipped it, drawing a line of yellow-green blood. It whirled around, swinging its long, bladed tail, and in Appa’s saddle, there was nowhere to dodge. And Katara… her arm…
“AHHHHHHHH!”
No! Not Katara! Not her not her not-
I reached out to the air around me, spun it just so, tightened it and swirled it until it held the force of a typhoon, and threw it at the monster. It was flung bodily from the saddle, limbs flailing as it tried to grab on to something that wasn’t there. As it flew over the side, it slashed down with its arm blades, tearing a chunk out of the saddle. And then it was gone.
I immediately ran to Katara, along with Sokka. She was still screaming, and oh spirits there was so much blood!
“Katara!” Sokka was screaming. “Katara, heal yourself! You’ve got to heal!”
Katara moaned, and fumbled with her waterskin. She was having trouble opening it with her left hand, so I helped her. She gloved one hand with water and pressed it to the wound (oh spirits, her arm was barely attached), but was shaking hard, and the water wasn’t staying still. I suddenly began wishing fervently that I had studied some healing in the North.
I felt it more than heard it, a displacement of air above me, and looked up. Appa had been weaving from side to side, trying to get out from under the flying machine, but now it was peeling back. I hoped that that was the end of it; that we’d won, it was leaving.
Then I saw the second machine, and the third, coming right behind it.
“Oh no,” moaned Sokka, following my gaze. “Katara? Katara, are you… will you be okay?”
Katara was breathing in gulping, shaky gasps. But she had managed to staunch some of the bleeding. “I don’t know. I- I can’t move my arm.”
I felt sick. Katara was hurt badly, and the flying machines were gaining. Making a decision, I scooted to the front and grabbed Appa’s reins, bringing him down.
“Aang! What are you doing?” asked Sokka.
“The machine might not be able to follow us into the trees,” I explained. “We might be safer down there.”
Appa touched down between the trees, and I jumped off. I looked up. The Bug fighters were larger than Appa, but not by much. They were circling, and descending. Had they seen where we’d landed? I wasn’t sure…
“I have an idea,” I said.
Sokka, who was still with Katara in the saddle, stared. “You have an idea?”
“Yeah,” I replied, and put my hand on Appa’s flank.
I’d only morphed one animal before, and that was Momo. All I’d had to do was concentrate on him, picture the lemur in my head and focus. It was a bit like meditation, actually.
Now, I meditated on Appa.
The first thing that happened was that my arms began to swell, inflating like they were being filled with air. My face bulged and my bones creaked, and a tail began to swell from the back of my spine. It didn’t hurt, but it sounded like it should.
“Aang?” came Sokka’s voice. “Aang, what- what are you doing?”
“Nrraaaaeeeeennnn mmmmmmmruh!” I replied. It wasn’t exactly what I’d meant to say, but that’s what came out.
As my body grew, my clothes grew tight around me, then ripped along the seams. Whoops. Forgot about that. I’d have to try to fix those later. Horns grew from my forehead, and white, fluffy fur sprouted all over my body.
“Aang!” Sokka was shouting. “Aang!”
A pair of legs, just like Appa’s, sprouted out of my middle, growing out of me like branches from a tree. The world changed around me, becoming duller in color, and somehow wider. I breathed in, and the scents of the forest swirled through me. My ears twitched. I was Appa.
It was different than being Momo. I felt less excited, more calm. But there was power underneath the peacefulness. If my herd was threatened, I would defend it with all my strength.
“Aang!”
Oh right. Sokka. Wow, he was small.
(I’m okay, Sokka,) I thought at him. (I’m going to lead them away from you guys.)
“This isn’t a good idea, Aang! They could kill you!”
(I’m not letting you get hurt.)
I lifted my tail, and shoved the air down. And just like that, I was airborne.
When I had flown as Momo, it had been different. I’d had to constantly flutter my wings, staying up by muscle power. But Appa flew by bending, by moving the air with his tail and legs. He flew like I did.
As I crested the treetops, I could see the flying machines had landed in spaces between the trees not far from where I had brought Appa down. Monsters were coming out, both sword-blade monsters and another kind, like septapedes the size of tree trunks, with bloblike red eyes and a huge mouth full of sharp teeth. They reminded me of Koh. I flew directly above them. They looked up at me.
C’mon! Follow me! I knew better than to think it at them, of course.
I circled around, and bellowed, just for effect. One of the blade monsters lifted its arm, and there was a beam of red light, and-
(Ow ow ow ow!)
Whatever that light was, it hurt! It was like they’d shot fire at me! They were trying to shoot me down!
But I was still alive. I could still fly. I could lead them away…
But the monsters didn’t seem interested. They were still going towards `Katara and Sokka. And Katara was hurt. She wouldn’t be able to waterbend well, and there was no way Sokka could fight them all.
They were helpless.
I turned and flew back to where the real Appa had landed, getting there before the monsters did. Sokka and Katara were still in Appa’s saddle. Katara was terribly pale, and looked like she might faint.
“Aang! What are you doing? You can’t just leave!” Sokka looked furious and terrified, all at once.
(They’re coming! They didn’t follow me.)
Sokka groaned weakly. “Oh. Great. Wonderful.” He withdrew his club and boomerang, and, with one last glance at Katara, slid down from Appa’s saddle.
Appa himself was eying me warily. Unrelated male sky bison don’t usually get along, but I smelled just like him, so he should be fine, right?
csh
My ears flicked, and I turned to face the noise. (What’s that?)
“What? What’s what?”
(That sound. It-)
Then, the first blade monster burst through the trees.
Without a pause, Sokka threw his boomerang, whistling through the air straight for the monster’s face. But the monster swung its arm, a blade catching the weapon and knocking it uselessly to the ground. Then, it leapt forward, kicking at the air with its leg-blades.
Startled, I reared up before I knew what I was doing. A septapede monster and another blade monster were coming now, and their strange, acrid smells were assaulting my bison nose. Sokka had a drawn, bug-eyed look, even as he let out a war-cry and charged the foremost blade monster. The creature swung one arm at him, which Sokka blocked, and then swung the second.
Sokka was being attacked. My herd was being attacked.
“Grrrrrruhhhhhhhhhhhhnnnnnggggghhh!”
I charged. One moment, the blade monster was in front of me. The next, it wasn’t. Simple as that. The lumpy, sharp thing under my feet? What did it matter?
I saw Sokka out of one eye, looking shaken. He was part of my herd. I would protect him.
“Mmmmrrrggghhh!”
I looked in the direction of the distress call. Another bison was being threatened by a septapede monster and a blade monster. He wanted to charge them, but a rider was in his saddle and he didn’t want to hurt her. I understood this instantly.
I had to protect them. My herd.
I charged again. The septapede was not as lumpy as the blade monster had been, and simply splattered underneath my feet. But the second blade monster was more agile, and leapt up. It landed on my back, and I reared, even as its blades bit into me. I rolled onto my back, and the monster was crushed.
More were coming. I could smell them. I swung my tail as they emerged, blowing them back into the trees.
I roared. They ran.
It was safe now. The herd was safe. I-
I…
I had killed them.
Oh, oh spirits. I had killed them.
“Aang! Aang!”
I’d killed them. Just crushed them, under my feet. I could still feel the stickiness of their blood between my toes.
I felt sick, and my legs gave out. Dimly, I felt my side hit the ground.
“Aang! You’re hurt! Aang, talk to me, buddy!”
Sokka ran into my field of vision, waving his hands frantically. “Oh man,” he said. “Oh man, Aang. Please say something.”
(Sokka?) I thought finally. (What happened?)
Relief was clear on his face. “Thank goodness! Aang, you fought them off, but you’re hurt. The spiky thing got… it got you. Your back is…. It looks pretty bad.”
(Oh.) So that explained why I felt so lightheaded, at least partly. I hadn’t realized he’d hurt me that badly, though.
“You should change back. I’ll get you on Appa, and we’ll find a village or something to help you and Katara. Okay?”
(Sokka, I killed them. They’re dead.)
Sokka paused, and glanced over to the side. “Yeah, you did. And a good thing, too. I wouldn’t want that thing to get back up.”
Of course Sokka wouldn’t understand. He was a warrior, not a monk.
I felt something nudge my side, and with a great deal of effort turned my head to look. It was Appa. I understood. He saw a wounded herdmate and was trying to help them get up. He would do anything for his herd. Even risk his life. Even kill.
I closed my eyes, and pictured myself– bald, pale-skinned, short, tattooed. Did I even deserve those tattoos, after what I’d done? Did I even deserve to call myself an Air Nomad? I hadn’t even been in the Avatar state or anything. I’d been Appa, though. Was that an excuse?
No, I had to concentrate. I was too tired to fly, and vaguely aware now of a warm, wet stickiness down my sides. I had to let Sokka help me.
I felt myself shrinking. It was like a free-fall, only while still standing on the ground. My bones creaked, and my innards squished and shifted. And oddly, the pain in my back faded. Strange.
I opened my eyes, and I was me again, my hands on the ground in front of me. I turned around and looked at Sokka.
“Oh,” he said.
I reached around with an arm and felt my back. I felt something sticky, but there was no wound. “I’m not hurt.”
Sokka blinked. He looked at Appa, then back to me. “You know what? I’m going to get you a blanket.”
He quickly scrabbled into Appa’s saddle, and threw me down a blanket to cover myself with, seeing as how my clothes had been shredded. As soon as I had it around my waist, I jumped into the saddle with Katara. She was still managing to hold the bleeding, but was pale and looked exhausted.
Oh spirits, I thought. Please don’t let her die.
“Katara?” I asked. “You okay?”
“Hurts,” she replied through grit teeth.
“Katara,” said Sokka. “Listen to me. Do you think you can keep it up until the next village? It could be a few hours away.”
Katara moaned, and her head fell back.
“No?” I looked at Sokka. He looked very sad. “Then I want you to morph Momo. Right now.”
I stared at him. What was he talking about?
“No, really! Listen, Aang got hurt when he was Appa, really badly. But when he morphed back, he was fine. So I don’t think injuries carry over when you change. If you morph Momo, you might be fine. And then we’ll have two hours to get to the next village before you change back. Do you hear me, Katara?”
“You sure?” asked Katara, her voice quiet.
“Yes. I– I’d rather have a lemur for a sister than no sister at all.”
Katara began to change.
And, as she did, she began to heal.
As Katara’s face bulged into a muzzle, her arm began to knit back together, the bone and muscles reconnecting even as I watched. As she grew fur, the wound closed up, and my heart leapt.
Thank you, I thought, praying to Elfangor's spirit. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
