Judy Chicago, the Metaphor of Sex and Art

Judy Chicago was born on July 20, 1939, and she became a well-known artist, art educator, and creator of the first feminist art programme in the United States at California State University, Fresno. She is an American feminist artist whose intricate and narrowly focused installations contributed to the women’s liberation movement’s visual presence in the 1970s and beyond. The artist, Judith Sylvia Cohen, was born in Chicago, Illinois, and went to the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She began drawing at age five, inspired by her mother, May Cohen, who encouraged her love of the arts.

Judy characterises her previous pieces as minimalist. She worked with pyrotechnics and explosives as performance art, manipulating coloured smoke flashes to create “atmospheres” outside. She debuted as a solo artist at the Rolf Nelson Gallery in Los Angeles. Then, she was one of only four female painters to appear in the Jewish Museum’s inaugural major minimalist exhibition. She made a series of abstract paintings called “Pasadena Lifesavers”, using acrylic paint on Plexiglas to explore her sexuality.

To give the impression that the shapes “turn, dissolve, open, close, vibrate, wiggle,” these works combined colours to depict her realisation that “she was multi-orgasmic.” Her research on women’s sexuality and representation underwent a dramatic sea change after the release of the series.

Chicago’s “The Birth Project” (1980–1985) and “The Holocaust Project” (1985–1993) continue to explore themes related to women’s lives. “The Dinner Party,” her most well-known piece, is permanently displayed in the Brooklyn Museum. The installation consists of a large ceremonial feast on a triangle table, honouring women’s history with sitting arrangements meant for 39 legendary and well-known ladies from mythology. Beneath the triangular table, on the white tile floor, are the gold-inscribed names of nine hundred and nine women.

Judy Chicago and the Feminism

‘Chicago’s fascination with women’s history is one of the defining aspects of her feminism and one of the features that mark her as part of her generational cohort. For Chicago and others coming into feminist consciousness in the late 1960s, the pressing need for a usable women-centred past enlisted history as an element of their political practice. Feminists in the early 1970s also focused on women’s daily resistance practices and renewal strategies. For Chicago, this focus on “ordinary” women would eventually translate into her attention to needlepoint, china painting, and other art forms dismissed by the art world as “craft” in The Dinner Party. But in 1970, women’s history, which she was most interested in writing, was what she called “female art history.” This would involve an intense focus on the female body’, writes Jane Gerhard.

Chicago utilised her courses, which included both men and women, as testing grounds for her feminism during her first teaching term. She declared, for instance, that “only the women talk; none of the men talk” in one of her classes. Some males who thought her views ridiculous and her style harshly booed her. The rate of attrition was high. While some students left school, others vowed to stick with it because they found Chicago challenging and motivating.

Midway through the 1970s, the realization of the limitations within heterosocial political groups that had spurred the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s persisted. However, other feminists, notably those in Chicago, saw separation as the solution to those limitations rather than integration. Chicago accepted guys; her actions did not imply this. Instead, she aimed to establish independent, male-free areas where empowered women might unite to build a more just and equal society.

Toward that end, Chicago recreated her studio to be a space where women could encounter the insights of feminism and experience a feminist lifestyle by living and working with other women and where their sense of themselves could be transformed from girlfriends and wives to artists and feminists — goals very similar to those of her classroom. Yet this time, Chicago, not the university, was in charge.

According to Jane Gerhard, ‘Between 1974 and 1979, Chicago mobilized feminist and financial interest in the project by giving public lectures to women’s groups, art groups, and any other venue that would pay her. While touring the country, she sought contacts with people who could help her raise much-needed funds. Later, the publication of her first memoir, Through the Flower, won several converts to her project who were willing to move to California to help her. By the end of 1975, she had a core staff that took on more and more project management.

The fifties, those explosive years that defined my youth, were coming to an end. I’d recently finished college and landed my first teaching job. Now, I thought, would be a fine time to veer from my academic approach to drawing and painting and throw myself into the waves of abstract expressionism. This was my mind-set on that rainy morning in Los Angeles, when I entered the Simone Silva Gallery, a cloud break tapping the roof, not a human visible, just the impact of a single canvas catching my eye in the small space short of the main gallery. “Who is this?” I asked, meaning: Who created this wonder that seems at once to capture recognizable forms and then shatter them into a mystery? Who is strong enough to go to that point beyond the mind and into the soul? “Damn,” I added, full-voiced. “Who is this?” I hadn’t looked closely at the only other person in the space, the way she laughed, almost silently. “Who are you?” she asked. “I’m Grace Hartigan.” Slender, pale, and appearing a bit lost, she seemed to be in stark contrast to the picture exhibited, and two others she would eventually convince Mr. Silva to bring into view. Looking back now, I see myself revitalized after a three year stretch in the army by an art world under siege. It was if a certain freedom had reached a group of American painters and catapulted them into a realm unlike any before them. This sudden phenomenon lifted me. I felt wildly free! And why not? Yes, my home base was Fresno, but that didn’t disqualify me from the revolution. There would be no more lavender-shadowed still lifes or landscapes for me. Goodbye French impressionists. Hello to the incorrigibles known as the New York School. Forget the tea, unless you could smoke it. Throw out the crumpets and bring on the pork rinds and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Quit trying to capture the nude figure with charcoal sticks, but keep the models around for inspiration. This new tribe of artists, Miss Hartigan would in time inform me, were her personal associates, their names as frightfully foreign as a pro football team’s offensive line—Pollock, Rothko, deKooning, Baziotes—had stormed into view and left the air smelling of wet paint and a noise as American as bebop. I couldn’t have know much about Grace Hartigan back then, other than she was one of a small group of women painters mentioned along with the men responsible for the burst of abstract expressionism. Television was just a baby, and social media stopped at closing time in the neighborhood bar. We artists across the land knew only what we read in print and what we heard from the few messengers bearing news. The idea of getting rich through painting or sculpting didn’t exist, and becoming famous was a laugh line. “How do you like California,” I asked her. She informed me in a New Jersey accent that she once worked “near here” as a mechanic during the war. I realized she meant WW2, and was 10 years older than me. “My husband at the time was in the service and I couldn’t find anything in commercial art.” We talked a bit more, and then moved into the main gallery to take a look at the work of Rico Lebrun. While observing his large moody figure studies I made a comment that still bothers me all these years later. It came from me without thinking, words praising Lebrun’s “powerful masculine approach” that stretched into unabashed chauvinism. Oh, I got away with it. At least Hartigan allowed me my “enfant terrible” moment by keeping silent. She did tell me later that she’d sold many of her works under the pseudonym of “George” Hartigan, her eyes holding mine to make sure I felt her emotion behind such a decision. Many times since my brief meeting with Grace Hartigan, I’ve examined Nina Leen’s 1950 Life magazine’s group photo of the “Fab Fifteen,” the culprits she thought best portrayed the “new cutting edge.” We are left now, to wonder how many artists featured in that iconic camera shot actually went on to build a movement destined to shake the art world?. For one thing, the picture is without Franz Kline, perhaps the wildest of the bunch, so it is not complete. And the one woman, Hedda Sterne, seems to have been added to lessen the band’s testosterone level. I wish Nina Leen had found Grace Hartigan that day in Greenwich Village and shuffled her into the mix. Grace would have been about thirty at the time, but she had her own studio, full of large paintings that exemplified that extra step, that desire in every artist to dare even her own soul.

New Careers In Space  

A young person asked me the other day about careers in space. There’s always exploration – astronaut training as mission specialists all the way up the capability level to actual commander of a space craft. But what struck me was that the possibilities for millions of jobs are quickly forming in fields that no-one previously ever thought could possibly interest anyone except technocrats.

With the commercialization of space (see previous articles), weekly launches of everything from small satellites, communications satellites, test missions, deep space probes, International Space Station ferrying of people and supplies, and, yes, SpaceX’s launch of a car into a solar orbit that exceeds the Mars orbit occasionally – all these point the way to a growing industrial demand – a demand for money, technology and qualified, dedicated people.

But let’s not forget transportation either. Currently there are six programs running to design and test a hop into space with passengers aboard, let the earth spin under the craft, and come down a few hours later half-way around the globe.

Then there are the scientists working away with new materials to help us move the human race into space. Nano tubes strung out in one nearly unbreakable chord that can be anchored to Earth and the other end counterbalanced 46,000 miles into space in a straight line making an elevator cable... going up?

Then there are the support jobs for space exploration activities – after all people have to eat and live somewhere. Let’s look at Kern Country and Fresno Country in California. Mojave Flight Test Center is there (where Branson’s Virgin Galactic is situated). Meanwhile Fresno houses some of the builders of the Shuttles and other spacecraft. In 1981 when the first Shuttle flew, there were under 600,000 people living in those two counties. Today there is a growing population of over 2,000,000, 40% of whom work for or in relation to Aerospace industries.

SpaceX is building a new launch center on Cape Canaveral bringing 5,000 new jobs and perhaps as many as 20,000 additional jobs to the region. Multiply that by the number of space companies rapidly expanding nationwide and the Dept. of Commerce estimates an annual job rate growth of just over 15% related to space exploration and technologies alone. And they are not counting schools, day-care, restaurants, builders, etc.

So, back to the question: where are the space jobs going to be? From a short term point of view, go to where these companies are based and talk to the HR team, find out what they want and then get the right education to match. They need skilled plastic bonding experts? Learn that in college. They need wiring technicians? They need maintenance engineers? They need security people? They need painters? They need caterers? Sign up, learn the trade. Those jobs will be solid and in demand.  When expanding, companies cannot afford to discard qualified people. And, because they are in a hurry to succeed, they pay well too.

Oh, and long term? Astrophysics and astronomy seem the most lucrative and promising careers. Yes, astrophysics helps with orbital insertion and flight profiling. Solid, demanding work. Want something a little more long-term and beneficial to humankind? Think like Magellan, Humboldt, Arthur C. Clarke and stretch the mind... think astronomy and exoplanets. So far we know of 3,767 confirmed planets around other solar systems. That number is about to explode when TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) settles into orbit and begins sending back data. It only has a two year mission but during that time will scan over 200,000 stars closest to Earth. Want to guess how many planets it will uncover? And here’s the bombshell for all your job seekers... it is expected that TESS will be able to detect water on those planets. Think about that and begin your job hunting there... you’ll be involved in space exploration in no time.
