Day One of @kayvision-kp’s 30 Day Bugsnax Challenge; today’s prompt is “Meet the Journalist”!

Ripley is a GNN reporter whose real passion in life is making comics. However, since their boss (and aunt), Clumby, told them drawing cartoons for a living wouldn’t be a realistic career option, they settled for writing about paranormal activity around New Grump City — not that they’re complaining!

They’re tasked with helping bring back Snaxburg together after the mysterious disappearance of Lizbert Megafig, and oh, boy, do they have their work cut out for them…

Although I’m not sure I’ll stick it out the entire 30-days, this seems like a fun thing to do over the first month of summer! So, keep your eyes peeled ;0]

The Journalist (Bugsnax) vs Nicolas Brown (Gangsta.)

Coming ABSOLUTELY NEVER, Bugsnax 2! Taking place 2 decades after the first game, explore Snaktooth Island from a new perspective with an entire new cast of characters!

(Character Info under cut, I'm putting way too much effort into this)

First off, our new protagonist: Yolka Woolbag! Lacking a feeling of purpose after the death of her mother, Yolka arranged an expedition to Snaktooth Island to uncover the mystery of where she was born. However, throwing a wrench into that plan is her sudden disappearance and loss of memory, leading her to have to rediscover who she is and why she's there at all!

The first grumpus you'll meet, Writney Bumblenuzzle is the crew's nurse, and is already very tired of dealing with Yolka's amnesia. Contrary to her profession, she's passive-aggressive and would really rather do anything but her actual job.

A roughhousing ex-rodeo clown, Kessie Cattlespur's a rootin' tootin' has-been, longing for the good old days. While he's far past his prime, he believes he still has it in him to act as he did in his youth, but those days are long behind him.

If you need any information on the new bugsnax you'll uncover in Bugsnax 2, Camby's your grump! A zoologist with a bit of an obsessive streak, Camby is passionate about preserving the habitats of native creatures, and isn't too keen on consuming all the natural wildlife.

A niche painter and successful architect, Alferg Barbweaver's incredibly talented, but not very passionate about his art. Laid back and not particularly driven, Alferg's coasted by on the minimum effort required in... almost all parts of his life.

Very large, very stupid, and very, very cowardly, Garriel Grizloop's had a history of people being scared of him for his appearance. He's always trying to gain the approval of others by helping whenever he can, but hasn't found much success in his attempts.

A faded star, Charona Dapplechap has moved on from her days as a showgirl, but still longs for her youth when she was talented and beautiful. She and Kessie have quite the history, and really would rather not speak about it.

An alumni of the brilliant Professor Fizzlebean, Hadley Stormbrewer is an obnoxious snob with an ego the size of his brain (which he claims to be quite, quite large). Despite his accolades, he's quite secretive about his area of study, and besides his previous studies, he doesn't let on much about his background.

If you don't wake up at 4am to work out, can't lift twice your body weight, and dare to eat something with more than a gram of sugar, you're clearly not putting in enough effort, according to Steffonie Jumpinjack. The biggest health nut around, Steffonie's a bit pushy and judgemental, but ultimately well-meaning in her want for everyone to be healthy.

Come one, come all, to Biggie Scotchtop's Bugsnax Circus! Always desiring fame but never achieving it back home, Biggie's attempting to create something the world has never seen: a full circus with bugsnax performers! Her endeavours have yet to be successful, but she'll try anything to get the fame she desires.

If you've read a single magazine in the past years, you've obviously heard of infamous travel blogger, Gazzo Starsnap. A bit airheaded and out of touch with "poor people" reality, Gazzo's only on Snaktooth to take photos of the exotic landscape, take a vacation from his "very busy" life, and of course, dig into the local food!

Nobody quite knows Druple Jamnut. She's secretive, somewhat off-putting, and seems to know a bit too much about the island for someone who's never stepped foot there. She disappeared around the same time as Yolka, but unfortunately hasn't resurfaced since. Nobody's been too keen on looking for her.

You know when I first heard about Dungeon Meshi from tumblr osmosis I thought it was a sort of dungeon crawler/D&D parody from a world where all the monsters in the dungeon are animate food creatures like Bugsnax or something, and I was exceptionally pleased to discover when watching the anime that the dungeon is in fact populated by entirely ordinary fantasy monsters and it's just that the protagonists are all freaks who are into eating them anyway

This is Jennifur Fiddlepie, the protagonist of my Next Gen AU. She's a very over enthusiastic grump who started an expedition with her friends Emercus, Kenri, and Candi to learn more about Bugsnax! She often likes to interact with other grumps, and she really likes to learn more about people. She can easily make friends, and this, as a result, is why almost everyone in town at least likes her a little bit. She acts and looks more like her father Filbo, being optimistic about most things and also (unfortunately) having a really low self-esteem. Luckily, she makes up for this in her athletic skills she got from her other parent.

And for those wondering, I have come up with a few more characters since then.

First, I'm thinking of scrapping Kokomi, and replacing her with Ena Shinonome (Project Sekai). Kanade gets a friend yippee! Also I know that gets rid of the potential "protag finally comes alone without a friend from their media" idea but this killing game will never actually happen so put down the complaint slab.

The thing is, however, Ena isn't just going to be a support, but actually a second protagonist! How does that work? Well, uh, I haven't really decided on all the specifics but I was thinking at certain points in the narrative, the POV would swap between Kanade and Ena. Whether this be in the same chapter, or one POV per chapter, I'm not sure. Does this make them exempt from either of them dying with this concept? Not really, but it depends how everything would play out.

Otherwise, some other characters I'd like to add next include: Rodrick Heffley (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) because I think his personality would be a funny clash with some others, and Filbo Fiddlepie (Bugsnax) as I recently re-watched that funny lil game and thought it would nice to add some rep from that. I mean, it doesn't have to be Filbo but he also has an interesting personality to add to the mix. And since we already have some puppet/la creatura characters like Duck, Pim and Charlie, it's not like he'd stick out like a sore thumb.

I was also thinking of maaaybe adding some rep from Lookism? Does anyone know what that is? It's this Korean webcomic about a guy with two bodies (where one is hyper conventionally attractive) and also there's a fight scene every other panel /hj

Character wise for that I was thinking either Vasco, Zoe, Jiho or Jay since they're my favourites heha

while accompanied by the Bull Shark Pup aka the shark protagonist from the game Maneater as Elizabert pets it’s snout and it’s friendly towards her but sneakily they both would be working together to protect eachother in the underwater environment while swimming together.

Details: the ref images were to help show the Bull Shark’s ingame design and what Lizbert wears while underwater.

Lizbert would wear a black red style swimsuit and pair of red black diving flippers but also a diving mask on her face

and scuba tank on her back while breathing from the scuba regulator oxygen mouthpiece in her mouth.

While Lizbert be armed with a underwater style speargun in her other hand to hunt for aquatic Bugsnax. and defend herself whatever lurks.

While Eggabell be scuba diving aswell staying by Lizbert’s side cause you know ❤️‍🩹🏳️‍🌈 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩

I guess since I have a lot of characters I’ll talk about a few of them, but I’m always willing to talk about more of them.

The protagonist of my story and her main friend group consist of five characters, so there’s Cia, Kio, Tristen, Avery, and Solstice.

They’ve all known each other for a long time (Cia and Kio especially they’ve been friends since they were like 5, and Kio would literally know Avery his whole life because that’s his twin sister.) There’s actually a couple romantic relationships within the group. Kio and Solstice are partners, and Avery and Tristen are partners.

I like to think they gather together for video game sessions where they try to get the others into their favorite games (or at the very least the plot of the story). Solstice probably introduces the others to Bugsnax, and Tristen definitely introduces Undertale.

They all have some other hobbies as well. Cia really likes art and writing. She probably writes fanfiction in particular. Kio’s very into music, and he really likes to play guitar. Tristen just in general likes anything that involves tech. Avery is really good at swordfighting, and Solstice really loves plants. She has a garden that she tends to, and she also likes to make crafts and things like that.

So that was a little ramble about some of my characters! I really need to draw these five all together more.

what would your ocs be as pokemon? or if you've already done that what would they be as bugsnax??

Oh I have never been asked this publicly before (for I have not been asked... anything publicly before this week LOL) but I don't know if you're prepared for how much I have thought about my ocs as pokemon or how much effort I am currently putting in to... Well. You'll see.

So. I have Thoughts.

Here are my thoughts (names quickly added for this to be understandable by anyone but me. But I've had this image made for quite some time)

(I love that regular wingull appears on here twice. It was kind of the only choice for both of them LOL.)

(also I like how this shows you who my brain considers In A Group with each other... hee hee)

So this is like.. The whole cast of MYMK lmao. Even down to background characters. These are like... PMD style pokemon assignments. I tried to balance "literally looks like them" with "has the right vibes, thematically". So you can see a couple thematic pairs of pokemon like the cherrims, meowstics and such. Then other fun picks like Charizard for Hainu, since he's a, well, hypebeast more than he is a person. Then, Markus and MacGuffin get Silvally and Type: Null for (wink) reasons.... And Miao is Marowak because don't even worry about it. Lupus is Lycanroc-Dusk because funny doggy shounen protagonist :)

Also there are ABSOLUTELY pokemon that fit Tabitha better than Persian does but I've been saying hes one of those since 2015 and I'm attatched to it now.....

The reason I went ahead and planned these out and finalised these recently though.... Is because I also assigned them all ideal ribbons/marks/pokeballs and am going to hunt them all! Right now I'm prioritising getting ones where the ribbons/balls necessitate getting them from gens 4-7, but they're all nearly done and are sitting in ultramoon while I grab the royal master ribbon for a few!

(Obviously I've named pokemon after OCs before but these will be The Definitive Guys... Until next gen inevitably introduces the perfect guy for someone lol. C'est la vie!)

I've got a couple more already in swsh and scvi (recently I caught Lazulite in swsh! Go Raid RNG!) but this is the big first step. As for how many other steps there are....

Anyway! Most of the main characters have fully assigned "if they were a pokemon trainer" Rosters too with some lore. (Chrome does contests, All of Tabitha's pokemon have been gifted to him, Lupus has insane shiny luck, Ali Will Summon Giratina....)

Also! The Alighieri triplets map perfectly onto the shiny meowths! They were the first three I went out of my way to hunt back when I saw shiny G-Meowth and realised!!! Pink Yellow Blue!!! My little guys!!

And lastly the thing you almost certainly weren't asking was "what would your OCs look like if they were fakemon, but I also have that for, you guessed it, Chrome, Tabitha and Ali.

Now... As for bugsnax. I have not played bugsnax but I DO have a resident bugsnax fan... So I asked him out of curiosity and they Extremely Delivered. So, Courtesy of @thebrightesteyes....

Anyway I've been trying to rotate a PMD AU in my brain for some time now (purrgatorio lends itself well to it, obviously...) I wonder what I'd make the antagonist...

Also, of note. Ali (and their siblings) does actually have a canon favourite pokemon and opinion on pokemon because they're from a real-world setting. Thing is they are like, not a gamer. So...

Ali likes Dusknoir and Seviper because they saw them on trading cards as a kid and likes Hoopa Unbound because Ari showed them on pokemon go knowing they'd like the design. If they gamed though they'd LOVE Giratina but Hoopa would probably stay top spot.

Ari likes Raichu, Lurantis and Toucannon. (Gamer)

Sat down and drew all of my game protagonists from games I've played where you make your own protagonist (ie the protag doesn't have an established backstory/story and often has some form of customization). Putting the art below a cut though because there's 21 of them total.

Isamu Fuwa- People joked that he’s the real protagonist due to having a form that is usually reserved for the protagonists in typical Kamen Rider fanfare and getting more spotlight than the titular Zero One at one point

The Bugsnax- (just a warning, this has heavy spoilers): I think swapping the perspective with the Bugsnax would be really interesting. The Bugsnax act like dozens of different creatures, but in reality, they're all one hive mind. We could have a flashback to see their backstory, we have tons of perspectives to watch what's going on from since there's so many Bugsnax everywhere, and we could see how they react to the original player and their actions. Plus, it works for all kinds of genres. Maybe it's straight up horror. Maybe it's a workplace comedy, and they drop their act when Grumpuses aren't around, similar to Toy Story.

Bugsnaxronpa - Bugsnax but the wheel decides their fate

I got bored and decided to do the "Danganronpa Wheel" trend but with Bugsnax characters and I really liked the story I got and came up with

(Daganronpa is a murder mystery game where Hope's Peak Academy students with "Ultimate" talents are trapped in an area where they have to get away with murder to escape)

I'll be sharing my live reaction and well as the story me and the wheel came up with

Prologue - 16 grumpuses find themselves trapped in Snaktooth Island. Monosnak announces that they have to get away with murder to escape and "graduate"

They also find a mysterious amnesiac Grumpus wbo doesn't remember their talent, He goes by the nickname "Buddy"

Also Filbo is the Ultimate Lucky Student, i refuse to give his incompetent the title of Ultimate Mayor

Now to roll for our protagonist

Protag - Snorpington Fizzlebean, Ultimate Engineer

(Snorpy protag? Hype as hell! He's my second favorite character)

(Snorpy would make for a good protag. He is smart... but he's a conspiracy nut, Probably thinks the Grumpinati is behind the killing game)

Now for the support/deuteragonist

Support - Gramble Gigglefunny, Ultimate Rancher

(Interesting... Gramble is kind and helpful, I didn't expect that but I can see it. Although I don't see him helping in the class trials very much)

Now for our rival/antagonist

Rival - Wambus Troubleham, Ultimate Farmer

(Hmm... I feel like his rivalry is mostly from Gramble and Wambus already hating each other. Since Gramble is our support he might argue with us by proxy)

Hmm... Interesting main trio so far, I really Snorpy as the protagonist. I see him initially thinking that the Grumpinati is behind the killing game

Chapter One

Who's gonna be the first victim?

Ch1 Victim - Floofty Fizzlebean, Ultimate Scientist

(WHAT? HOLY SHIT! I swear I didn't plan this! It's always the childhood friend/closest to the protag that dies first!)

(The protagonist's estranged sibling is like the PERFECT first victim)

(Wow... Their death will make Snorpy feel conflicted, He hates them but he still cares about them as a sibling)

Hell, I think the Fizzlebeans WERE planning on repairing their relationship but it got cut short

(Damn, i wonder who killed them)

Ch1 Killer - Shelda Woolbag, Ultimate Herbalist

(Huh... Why tho? Hmm... I guess I have to come up with a scenario for this, I won't come up with a murder method tho... That takes too much brain power for me)

Scenario: I think Shelda was planning on defeating/killing the mastermind, she tries to get Floofty's help

However Floofty doesn't take her seriously since Shelda still doesn't drop her persona, infuriating Floofty

(They already kinda hate each other in the original game, With Floofty being a person of science and Shelda having her whole "oracle" persona)

They get into an argument and Shelda ends up accidentally killing Floofty

(Wow, Off to a great start with Floofty as the first victim)

Now for chapter 2

Ch2 Victim - Gramble Gigglefunny, Ultimate Rancher

(Oh wow, a decoy support? That's interesting)

I was gonna roll for a new support, but I think Snorpy having two people close to him die will make his paranoid conspiracy theorist brain act up and think that the killing game is targeting him and anyone he's close to, so he tries to avoid getting close to anyone else in this game

This is a pretty good set up for a character arc

He might even distance himself from Chandlo to protect him, Which will hurt Chandlo as he hates seeing his boyfriend grow more distant

(Like in the canon game where he doesn't let Chandlo in on his plans fearing that the conspiracy will target him)

Ch2 Killer - Triffany Lottablog, Ultimate Archeologist

(Wow... Wambus even included her in the rivalry, Huh)

The motive this time is something like the "secrets" motive from the first game but this time it's notes that say "Worst thing someone else did to you/you did to someone else" and every note will get revealed if a murder doesn't occur in a few days

Gramble and Wambus get each other's notes, this makes their rivalry even worse

Wambus ends up trying to kill Gramble but then Triffany ends up interfering and killing Gramble to stop Wambus from being the blackened

Now for chapter 3 victims

(There's always a double murder in chapter three but I'll leave the first victim when I spin for a second victim and if it lands on the same person I'll only have one victim)

Ch3 Victims - Alegander Jamfoot, "Ultimate Barista" and Clumby Clumbernut, Ultimate Editor

I'm thinking that Snorpy finds out about their involvement with the Snakolites, gets suspicious of them... Then gets ULTRA PARANOID when it seems like the "Grumpinati" has "silenced them"

"Two Snakolite members getting killed at the same time? Right after they get exposed? Coincidence? I THINK NOT!"

"There has to be a secret Grumpinati traitor among us who killed them because the Snakolites and the Grumpinati are in cahoots!!!"

(What a coincidence that the two victims were Snakolites members, That gives me an easy motive)

Now for our third killer

Ch3 Killer - Beffica Winklesnoot, Ultimate Information Specialist

(The more I think about it... Her talent is just a glorified way of saying "gossiper" so her knowing things that should be secret is easy for her)

Beffica snooped and found out about Alegander and Clumby's relation to the Snakolites, a group she is VERY suspicious of

"What the hell is all this talking about "eating incests" and "food parasites"???"

"And why does the barista guy have a secret base on this island???"

"And why does he make worse coffee than ME shouldn't he be an Ultimate???"

She eventually find out about Alegander's real talent as the "Ultimate Cryptoentomological Researcher" and gets VERY suspicious of him

She tried to anonymously warn the group about their involvement since she thinks that the Snakolites are behind the killing game

However Alegander and Clumby twart her attempts to warn the group, the only one she succeeds in warning is Snorpy

Beffica thinks that Alegander and Clumby are going to "silence her" so she takes matters into her own hands

(Maybe at this point he finds out that the Snakolites were mostly benevolent and maybe even starts doubting his conspiracy theories)

Wow, This wheel is making an interesting plot

Time for the 4th chapter

(Please god if Chandlo dies from "Chapter 4 Buff Guy" syndrome I will be pissed)

Ch4 Victim - Wiggle Wigglebottom, Ultimate Musician

(Hmm... Interesting I guess... Wasn't what I was expecting)

Ch4 Killer - Cromdo Face, Ultimate Salesman

(Hmm...)

So Wiggle is a musician and Cromdo wants to succeed in the music industry

Monosnak says that the motive is a million dollars and a talentswap! Where the blackened gains the title of their victim

So if Filbo killed Snorpington, Filbo will start being called "The Ultimate Engineer"

Crombo kills Wiggle to get the money and her musical talent.

But the talentswap is actually in name only, all Cromdo got is the TITLE of Ultimate Musician, he doesn't actually get Wiggle's talent

(And plus Wiggle isn't that talented anyways, She just had a one hit wonder)

It seems like the scammer has become the "scam-ee"

Ch5 Victim - Eggabell Batternugget, Ultimate Doctor

(I wonder who killed her)

[I hate myself for not screenshoting who the wheel decided the killer is... Because you won't believe when I say that the wheel decided THIS to be her killer...]

Ch5 Killer - Lizbert Megafig, Ultimate Explorer

(Wait... What???)

(THIS WHEEL IS FUCKING HOMOPHOBIC)

(WHY DID THEY MAKE THE LESBIANS KILL EACH OTHER???)

Okay... I think... This is a [DRA SPOILERS] thing

I think that Eggabell has been feeling VERY bad about herself from all the deaths

As the Ultimate Doctor she's been performing autopsies, has been the medic and trying to stop murders from happening, Hell she's even stopped attempted murders by healing the would-be victims

But after nine people died she starts blaming herself for "not being enough"

So she decides to try and "make herself useful" by making EVERYONE the blackened so they can graduate

She manipulates the situation so that everyone has equal involvement in her death (just like nagito but crazier)

But in her final moments Monosnak tells her that there can only be ONE blackened no matter what, And that he'll decide who is the one true blackened

So in her final moments, As she's bleeding out, she thinks that it's better that SHE decides who gets to graduate

She tells Lizbert to "get her some medicine" that's actually poison, Making Lizbert the "true blackened"

But Lizbert ends up confessing to the murder and accepts her execution as "graduating" would mean condemning everyone to die, Something Eggabell would never want

Huh... That was sad and emotional

It's chapter 6 time! Time to reveal the mastermind

(I put all the dead participants back since having the mastermind fake their death pretty cool, A call back to Junko)

Mastermind - Floofty Fizzlebean

He had a whole arc about realizing that the Grumpinati isn't real and can't hurt him THEN HE LEARNS THAT HIS ESTRANGED SIBLING IS THE FUCKING MASTERMIND

I was gonna have the mastermind fake their death but maybe Shelda's plan to kill the mastermind DID WORK because FLOOFTY WAS THE MASTERMIND, and that the whole game has been running on autopilot the whole time (hell, we know that Floofty is perfectly willing to sacrifice herself for science™)

They all get on the ship and get home as the island fucking explodes because I need the ending to be more climactic

oooh there are so many games from my childhood (and more recent ones) that i'd love to mention

the first one i can remember is rayman. i love the first three games, especially 2 and 3. i have so many great memories connected to these games, and i wish 3d rayman made a comeback. after the mario and rabbids dlc, and the recent netflix show, i'm a little more hopeful about that

zoo tycoon 2 is also one of my favorite childhood games, alongside two other, far more obscure zoo games: marine park empire and wildlife park 2. i've always loved zoo games, i think it started with wlp2, it was sold as a part of a collection of animal related games. a similar one was jurassic park operation genesis - similar premise, except it's based around creating a jurassic park. the newest game in this genre is planet zoo, and i like it, but it can get very overwhelming with all of the modular building. it's time consuming and requires a lot of creativity, which isn't something i usually look for when i want to wind down and play something

another childhood series is the sims. the sims 2 specifically, though i also have many fond memories of the sims 3 (though i remember it more for the absurd loading times hahaha). while i like the sims 4, i find myself returning more to the sims 2 these days. it's very dated in some areas, but it offers a much deeper experience which i appreciate. and the lore can get batshit crazy sometimes which is great in on itself

i remember playing a lot of spore, especially the creature stage since i didn't understand the civilization and space stages at that point. i do enjoy them now, especially the latter, though i've never reached the ending of that one. i guess i just like exploring and trading with different planets too much

from some more modern games, i suppose, minecraft is one i like a lot. i started playing a few years after it's official release, and i remember starting with a pirated copy from a likely very sussy launcher. these days i usually just play it with friends from time to time

another series i'm a big fan of is the horizon series. horizon zero dawn and forbidden west. i know many people consider their gameplay nothing spectacular, but it's a big comfort game for me, especially the sequel. and the music, god the music in the second game is incredible

i mentioned assassin's creed, so i guess i'll talk about the series a bit. my favorite game is probably unity, i even named one of my cats after the protagonist. but i also love assassin's creed 2 and origins, both are great games. not too happy with the direction the series took, though, they feel too bloated and unfocused

i don't play that many multiplayer games these days, but team fortress 2 and (unfortunately) overwatch are my favorites. i like team games, even if they're often very frustrating. but the cooperation aspect generally really appeals to me

other games i can think of are patapon, subnautica, the yakuza series, both ori games, bugsnax and stardew valley

dang this is far longer than i thought it would be, but it's too difficult for me to pick one or two favorites hahah

also, i've heard about the stalker games before, though i've never played them myself. not too big on horror games haha
