Hello! My name is Ranch (she/her), I’m an adult, I study environmental and aquatic sciences, and I have a very big interest in aquatic life and biology, especially fish! I reblog a lot of pictures, art, information etc. related to biology, aquatic animals and other cool watery things, and I also post my own daily fish facts and art.

I tag animal death and jellyfish, you can ask me to tag other triggering subjects. I’m always open for suggestions.

When you reblog or comment on my fish facts, please don’t make comments about eating the fish or how they taste, if they’re edible, etc. It makes me uncomfortable and this account is not about eating fish.

I DONT ACTUALLY KNOW. BUT THAT IS SOMETHING IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT !!!!!!! i always think the "OUAHGH THEY SAID THE TITLE IN THE THING" type jokes are really funny so i locked onto the word right away LMAO. catch me keeping track of every use of the word worm in this million word long story . its a good word !!!!!!

ANYWAY. my first thought now is obv like... something to do with taylors powers??? but im not sure if she can actually control. worms. not to get too biology brained about it but the vague knowledge i have so far is that she can control BUGS but that is not specifically limited to *insects* . because she can also control spiders which are arachnids (though they are also usually lumped into "bugs" which is not a real classification it just kind of refers to things that people find creepy crawly) HOWEVER . the thing that arachnids and insects have in common are being *arthropods* which is like. the overall classification of Things With An Exoskeleton. WORMS are not arthropods they are . well it depends actually. worm is kind of like bug in the fact that its a general word for things that are kind of similar and not the name of a specific group. bc youve got earthworms which are annelids and . like. mealworms which ARE insects but still called worms. so maybe she can control worms also!!!! i really like this sort of . playing with the meaning of the word i guess. some people colloquially will call worms bugs as well even though theyre not. so it becomes a rhing like. are her powers based in LOGIC or science or whatever or are they based in. perception. i guess. because taylor is Bug there can also be Worms. does this make any sort of sense. this might be absolutely nothing bro is burning the food bro is not cooking the kitchen is empty 🔥🔥🔥

it could also be like... worm as a word not meaning the animal. like a cartoonishly evil guy referring to his minions as worms. or like the context in that sentence i posted like. worming your way in somewhere. which now that i think about it makes a lot of sense considering taylors whole plan to join a villain group undercover. wait. i may have just . rendered my whole biology paragraph useless. sad! well there are other insane things i could talk about i guess

Spider-Man Beyond The Web Along Came A Spider Brooklyn Apartments

Nick was asleep as if he were snugged like a bug in his bed. That was until he was awoken by his father's opening his blinds. "Time to rise and shine," he said as Nick sighs. "5 more minutes please..." "Now come on you don't want to be late for your first day at school do you?" he asked as Nick sighed but nodded. "There my senior. come on your mom made us breakfast," he said. Nick nodded as he went to get ready for this day. he went to his closet got some decent-looking clothes and headed to the kitchen. Nick's mom sees him and smiles "There my 18-year-old. Ready for your final year in high school?" she asks. Nick chuckled and nodded his head. "Heck yeah, I am. One more year and I can be a full-time adult!" Nick said as he sat down. His dad chuckled. "You're already an adult son." his dad said as his mom set down his plate. "Food first then brush your teeth." she said "Yeah yeah I know." Nick started to eat. He turned on the TV to see a commercial about splicing a new trend to give yourself animal-like features. Nick wasn't much into it. However, he did have a friend who did undergo that treatment.

After he was done with breakfast he was heading to his dad's car. He then got a call from his friend. Miles Morales. He answers "Well well what's up Miles? Ready for the first day as seniors?" Nick asked excitedly. "Heck yeah, I am dude! We're going to have Mr.Parker as our teacher this year." he said on the phone as Nick sighed "Aww yeah science that." He said, "Oh hey come on at least we will probably be in the same class." Miles said on the phone a bit hopeful. "Oh, my dad's here. I'll see you at school." Nick hangs up as he sees his dad coming over. The two get in the car and start to drive to Brooklyn Visions Academy.

As his dad drives he turns on the radio. "Crime rates have been increasing over the past couple of years. a good 14 percent in fact-." Nick's dad turns the radio off. "You don't need to listen to that," he said softly. Nick looks at his dad as he sighs. "Is it going to get any better?" he asked him. His dad looked at his son as he nodded his head a bit. "I think it will..." he said before he had to stop his car and saw a protest going on. "Aww looks at them." his dad said as Nick looked over seeing some people holding signs that said 'Splicing took away my daughter' 'Splicing is dangerous' and a bunch more anti-splicing propaganda. "Shame how our world is like this. people trying to live their lives as what they truly are then they have to deal with this." His dad said as they started to back away and take another street to the school. Nick looks at the anti-splicers as he looks back out the window.

Brooklyn Visions Academy

Nick's dad soon pulled up at the school. He got out and he looked back at his dad. "I'll see you later tonight Dad," he said with a smile. "Of course. Have fun on your first day." His dad said as Nick nodded and got his lunch from the back of the car and his backpack. "Love you Dad." he soon leaves as his dad smiles and starts to drive off.

Nick soon headed inside before stopping and seeing his friends. He smiled going over. Miles, Gwen, and Mayday. "Well look what the cat dragged in." Gwen said looking at Nick "Oh haha very funny." he said as he gave her a high five. "Furball." He said playfully as Gwen huffed and punched his arm. Nick rubbed it. "Ow..." he said. Gwen Stacy. The Splicer of the group and also a really good drummer in the band she's in. "Hey come on guys we're gonna be late for class," Miles said as Nick chuckled. "Hey, Mr.Parker can wait a bit longer Miles," Nick said to his other friend. Miles Morales. Someone way smarter than him with some of this science stuff. "He's right. My dad is usually punctual about school stuff. escaplly today." Mayday said with a bit of a chuckle. Mayday Parker. The first hours teacher daughter and really good artist. "So come on let's go," Mayday said to them. "Yeah yeah, Mayday," Nick said as his friends started to head on over to the first-hour class. Science class.

As the friends headed to their class their hallway was blocked by many students. "What the heck. Whose is that important to block the whole hallway" Nick said as Miles sighed "Do you even need to ask?" he said as the person blocking the way was none other than Harry Osborne. Wealthy son of Norman Osborne, He was being fawned over by the students who find him hot. "Ugh, Rich kids," Gwen said. Mayday chuckle. "Aren't you friends with one," she asked referring to her. "Well your diffrent." Gwen simply said as Nick smiled at this "Well I mean technically Gwen isn't wrong. Your dad is here at school instead of working in a lab at Oscorp." He said "Yeah well. Dad likes helping the children of the future. As he always says." She said as the four friends went to take a different route to class. Just in time as the bell rang. "Come on let's sit in the back," Nick said as the four of them got to the back of class. "Remember no goofing off," Mayday said to them. Mostly to Nick. "Have a little bit of faith in me May. I may hate science but I'll pay attention," he said as the class door opened. "Hello there class." The teacher said. "My name is Peter Parker. Most of you already remember me from last year's class. I see we got some new faces." he said "Mostly 3 in the back." he said. Nick was surprised to see that Mayday's dad was able to spot them in the back as Mayday waved at her dad. "Alright class. first things first. Who is up for a field trip?" Mr.Parker asked as the class was whispering to themselves "Field trip?" Nick said as Miles looked at him. "Yeah. were going to Oscorp. I told you this last month." he said as Nick looked at Miles then he remembered "Oh yeah! I forgot." he said and chuckled a bit as Miles sighed at him. "Relax I did it." he said "Now the field trip is going to take over the whole school day so I hope you bought some comfy shoes." Mr.Parker said, "Oh shit we're gonna be walking forever." Gwen said with a sigh as she looked at Mayday "I take it back your dad is just like the rest of them." she said half-jokingly.

"Alright class. Head on outside to bus 1 you should be in front of the school right about now." Mr.Parker said to them as the class started to get up and head on to the bus. "So I've never been to Oscorp before. What is it like?" Nick asked mostly Miles and Mayday cause he knew that Miles wanted to go there and Mayday probably went there a lot. "Oscorp is the most ditiginish company in the city." Miles said, "It's more than that." Mayday said "They're advocating for the splicer movement." she said Gwen chuckled a bit. "Well, I'll give Oscorp that. They are cool for that involvement," she said as Nick nodded his head as they arrived at the bus and all started to head on in and as usual headed to the back. Mr.Parker came in after all the students got on however he saw the principal as she came over with Harry "Sorry Mr.Parker but this student would like to go on the trip."She said as Mr.Parker looked at Harry. "Hey, Harry. Guessing you want to go see Oscorp too huh?" he said "He was very adamant." The principal said as Mr.Parker chuckled a bit. "Alright. As long as the other teachers don't mind that I'm taking one of their students." Harry scoffs a bit. "Whatever work they'll give me. I'll finish it when I get home." Harry simply said. Mr.Parker nodded his head "Then come on board Harry." he said as Harry got on the bus. Nick sees this and warns his friends "Watch out Osborne is on board. If that bully tries to get back here we ignore him. Agree?" Nick said.

Oscorp Upper levels

In the employee bathrooms, I was in there as I looked at my medication. I breathed a bit as I took some water and took two pills. I breathed and cried to myself. Soon there was a knock on the door. "Doctor. Octavius are you ok?" one of her workers said as she put her pills away. "Yes I'm simply getting ready," she said as she got out of the bathroom. She looked at her worker's face as she tilted her head "What's wrong?" she asked "Well it's...it's the girl...she escaped." Dr. Octavius' eyes widen. "What! What do you mean she's gone??" she said as the worker. "We were conducting the daily experiment and well. there was an electrical flash and then she was just gone." Octavius was freaking out a bit as she tries to compose herself. "What should we do? Should we cancel the tour?" the worker asked as Octavius shook her head. "No...will go as scheduled...she couldn't have gone far," she said as the worker nodded and went to radio the other workers that were there. Octavius started to head to the elevator and pressed the first floor to greet the students who were coming in for today's tour. Norman was not going to be happy about this.

Oscorp Lower levels

"Ok, Students stay in view where I can see you." Mr.Parker said as Nick was looking at one of the Spiders as they were cool looking. One was blue and red. "That's one weird-looking Spider," Gwen said coming over as her tail swished and Nick shrugs. "You say weird I say cool," Nick said as he sat up and he soon went to look around a bit. He stopped when he saw the elevator opening and out stepped Octavius as she fixed her glasses. She looked at Nick before her eyes widened "Oh you must be one of the students from BVA?" she said as Nick nodded his head. "Mhm," he said with a smile as Mr.Parker came over. "Ahh Doctor Octavius there you are. Ready to see the future minds of the next generation?" Mr.Parker said as Octavius nodded her head "Of course...but we have to talk afterward." she said as Mr.Parker nodded his head as he looked at Nick. "Mmm oh yeah I should probably head back huh?" he said as he headed back to the other students. he did bump into someone. He felt a tiny shock as he looked at the person he bumped into. His heart skipped a beat. It was a girl about his age as she looked at him. She got up. "Um Hi?" Nick said as he got up "H-hello?" the girl said. "Um. you must be one of my classmates huh? names Nick. Nick Arachid, you?" he asked. The girl looked away she blushed a bit before looking at him. "Maxine Dillion." she said softly as Nick went for a handshake Maxine didn't as Nick raised an eyebrow "Ok not the handshake touchy type," he said softly as Maxine shrugged. "I just...Don't..." she looks at him. "Mmmm. Come on. You should meet my friends." Nick said as he led her to his friends.

Octavius clears her throat as she looks at the students. "Everyone class. I like you to meet the head of research and development. Doctor Liz Octavius." Mr.Parker said as she smiled "Welcome everyone. I'm glad that your school decided to come here and learn about what we do here." she said. "Now we would like you to go to the upper levels. Unfortunately, those are off-limits at the moment. So feel free to explore this floor for now." she said as the students started to look around again as Parker went to talk to Octavius. "That was weird Liz." he said "What happened on the first floor?" he asked "You know we have been testing new sources of energy right?" she asked Peter nodded his head "Yeah? Wait was it desotryed?" he asked as she shook her head. "No... it sorta got misplaced. We're working on it right now. This is why I confined your students on this floor only." she said as Parker nodded his head. "I understand," he said. "You do what you have to do. I'll keep my students safe." he said as Liz nodded "Good..." she soon headed on back to the elevator.

Nick brought Maxine to his friends as they were still looking at those spiders. Miles soon noticed the two and smiled. "Hey there you are." he said as Mayday and Gwen looked over "Whose that?" Gwen asked as Nick smiled. "This is Maxine Dillion. She is one of our classmates," he said as Miles smiled and went to shake her hand as Maxine stepped back a bit. "Yeah, she doesn't like to be touched." Nick said, "I can understand that." Gwen said as Maxine looked at the Spiders a bit. Nick looks at her as he brings his friends in a group huddle. "Look she seems lonely so I thought maybe we can bring her into our friend group." he said as Mayday smiled "Sure why not." she said as Gwen and Miles nodded "I don't mind," he said before the four of them heard glass breaking. They looked over to see the spider enclosure was broken. Maxine's eyes widened as Nick looked "What did you do?" he asked "I-it just broke!" she said as Nick looked at her. "Glass just doesn't break!" soon Mr.Parker came over and saw this "Oh no ok everyone step back." he said to the five of them. as the kids backed away from the spiders Mr.Parker started to call some Oscorp scientist  to take care of these spiders as Nick huffs "Well there goes that enclousre." Miles said as Mayday nodded "Shame to cause my dad worked on that." she said. A few hours later

The tour was over as Nick was waiting outside for the bus with his friends. He was chewing on some gum as he tapped his foot a bit. Too much in fact,  as Gwen sighed "Can you stop that? It's annoying my ears. I'm still trying to get used to these." she said "I can't help it. it's cold out here." Nick said, "You're wearing your winter jacket." Miles said, "How are you cold." Nick shrugs a bit as he looks at Maxine. Who was just looking at the sky a bit. "She's pretty cool," Nick said as Mayday chuckled. "She's a bit odd but I like her. She's perfect for our little group," she said. Nick looks at Mayday. "So you guys wanna hang out at Miles's uncle's place later?" he asked and Gwen nodded "Oh hell yeah. We can make it a pizza night." she said "Can't Uncle Aaron is gonna be busy tonight." he said "Aww dang. Nick said as he looked at Maxine again. "You know what. I'm gonna shoot my shot," he said as Mayday chuckled at that. "Shoot your shot?" she said "Mhm. wish me luck." he said as he went over. "Hey, Maxine. A nice night outside huh?" he said as Maxine looked at him as she shrugged "It's... beautiful..." she said as Nick looked at her. "Yeah..." he smiled a bit before feeling a sharp pain on the back of his neck "OW what the-!" he smacked the back of his neck but immediately started to get dizzy. "Oh..." he said as Maxine looked at him. "Nick?" she said as Nick soon fell on her back. "Nick!" Miles yelled as he came over along with some other students. Soon Mr.Parker came over as he looked at Nick. All Nick could hear was mumbles as he saw Mr.Parker take his phone out. After that. Everything went black.

Animationo Night 177 - Kizazi Moto + Fatenah

Hey everyone. It's Animation Night again. We aten'nt dead!!

Huge apologies to European viewers that I couldn't stream this one earlier. Still, I'd like to get back into the swing of things, so we're back. (Bros. We're so back.)

So. tonight we're gonna be checking out Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire. This is a collection of scifi films created by studios from five different countries across the length of Africa.

The impetus came from the South African studio Triggerfish - originally a stop motion studio, but they switched over to CG a few decades ago. We saw some of their work back on Animation Night 166 in Star Wars: Visions, which came close enough to the stop motion feel as to leave me in doubt. There's no question they have a ton of talent.

Like Visions, this short film collection has the financial backing of the Mouse; it also has another American, Spiderverse director Peter Ramsey, serving as executive producer. But there's no monolithic franchise involved this time - the individual directors and studios were given considerable creative freedom. Styles range from anime-esque to Hanna-barbera; stories span aliens in high speed races through near future dystopias to apocalyptic stories about gods.

The creators are a little hands off towards the term 'afrofuturism'; in an interview with Skwigly magazine, producer Tendayi Nyeke asks us to interpret it just as scifi more broadly:

We don’t use the word Afro-futurist! Part of that is we are seeing science fiction, but through the context of Africa, and trying to demystify Afrofuturism. It’s not a genre for us. Because, you start to raise questions like can a French person do an afro futurist movie? And what does that even mean? So it’s an African filmmaker using science fiction as a medium to communicate. Science fiction allows them to imagine big futures. I love when a lot of Western science fiction is looking at  a dystopian context, we’re looking at hope. It really comes from trauma in some ways, though we have a rich heritage prior to the trauma. And then we’re like, hey, technology is evolving. We’re evolving as human beings. If there was hope, what could that look like? Science fiction as a medium allows you to explore that just by its design.

Among the filmmakers, there is considerable ambition to change the general layout of the animation industry. Raymond Malinga, director of Herderboy, remarks:

But somehow, because of all these things like colonialism and everything, it’s almost like our creativity was stifled by that and we just keep on accepting the fact that we are supposed to tell mundane things, you know? Mundane. Normal. So with “Herderboy”, I just took one of the oldest professions of the whole continent. And I said if I can update that and Ugandans watch that, they can start saying, you know, if cattle herders can look cool, then what else can look cool?

It's a cool interview, he's very charmingly down to earth when he talks about how after working on the film for a year he has no idea what's funny or not. Isn't that a mood...

Of course, until fairly recently there were a lot more animated films about Africa, such as the French Kirikou series, than animated films created in Africa. Which is nuts when we're talking about an entire continent, right? Thanks, "legacy of colonial extractivism". But things are really moving now! African animation was the subject of Annecy 2021, and in the online version of the festival I got to see the impressively varied Mshini TV collection of the edgier end of the spectrum, which carried all sorts from Newgrounds-esque flashes to South Park-like comedy skits. And this year at Annecy 2023, I got to see the first feature-length animated film from Cameroon, The Sacred Cave. A bug is spreading!

With this field, Kizazi Moto stands out for its startlingly high level of technical polish. And of course, I just like scifi. From the Mouse's perspective, they have their eye on the long game - trying to capture an 'emerging market' and all that. But, I would far rather they spend their money this way than having animators add yet more weight to the sinking Star Wars boat, you know?

While there have been a few animated films touching on the occupation from the Israeli side, like Waltz With Bashir, a celebrated psychological drama in a realist style in which a former Israeli soldier reflects on whether he did a warcrimes, and Seder-Masochism, in which Nina Paley attempts to lay out a story about how the patriarchical Abrahamic religions suppressed an ancient matriarchal religion (she is a terf, how did you guess!), which includes the undeniably conceptually effective but highly equivocating This Land Is Mine segment... there is less available from the Palestinian side for the obvious and sad economic reasons.

But, a couple of weeks ago, Animation Obsessive wrote an article to celebrate Fatenah (2009), a short film animated in the West Bank about a woman in Gaza struggling to get breast cancer treatment. It's available free on Vimeo:

It's directed by Ahmad Habash, a native of the West Bank who came to study animation here in the UK, and secured WHO funding after they saw his student film. But the film is not a one-note activist project, it's a careful character study trying to give a convincing portrait of the different facets of its title character's life. This film was completely new to me and I'm grateful to AniObsessive for highlighting some Palestinian art in my favourite medium. So I'd like to slot this into my little Twitch show as well!

I have a bunch of other short films I'm excited to show, between recent Gobelins works and another AniObsessive piece highlighting their favourite short films from the festival circuit which have become available online. But given the ludicrously late start, I don't want to pack too much in to this one. We'll save that for another week!

I now realize that the reason Wednesday feels weirdly OOC in later Addams family media is because the writers forget she’s a weird girl. Not weird as in, she’s goth and loves violence and speaks in a creepy monotone (all things she does, sure, but they aren’t really factors in the weird girl trait weighing). I mean weird as in, little girl weird, or if she’s on the older side, pre-teen and teen weird. She loves bugs (specially “ugly” ones like spiders and scorpions) and raises her own, is obsessed with the ocean and seafaring adventures, her brain collects true crime trivia like it’s Pokémon, in the animated movies she gets big into science, fucks sake in the new tv show she WRITES mystery stories with a very blatant self insert OC that is Her But Cooler. The point with Wednesday is that even if you removed the Addams-ness out of her, she’d still be a genuinely weird kid that other kids find off-putting because all her conversation starters begin with “did you know that [upsetting fact]?”, and she likes it that way, because socializing is for losers and bugs are SO much more interesting. This is a young girl who genuinely appreciates the world around her, just in her own weird ways. What really makes her a compelling character isn’t that she’s scary or violent, because she’s no more scary than other members of the family and no more violent than any other angry young girl with a younger brother. It is that, even in the funny and weird and dark Addams family ecosystem, she’s the little girl who likes gross things as well as playing with dolls and pretending to be a princess-astronaut-witch-dinosaur. I think if you set her loose in the library she’d be glued to a world atlas of spiders in like, ten seconds.

so! the straw hats first meet nel just before alabasta. aka they fish her out of the ocean a la bon-chan bc i think its funny if luffy fishes up two whole people at different times in the day like? guess the fish in this part of the grand line are shaped like people huh.... neat! nel isn't particularly pleased with any of this and is planning to immediately book it like "ha ha thanks for this bye" but then she gets dragged into the alabasta stuff bc bon-chan copies her face and is now under the impression she's a part of the straw hats! she would like to say: SHE'S NOT!!!!! PLS!!!! and considering she's currently (and has been) running from another animal themed weirdo and she doesn't want a second one on her ass she decides ok fine i'll stick around. get the lay of the land. she's 100% planning to throw them to the wolves if she thinks they'll lose. unfortunately she got bit by the friendship bug :/ damn girl sucks to be you so she sticks around for alabasta, kicks some weird birthday clown's ass, and forgets for a moment what she's running from. the usual Thing that happens with the straw hats. but watch out! the other animal themed weirdo kidnaps her off the merry after alabasta. robin manages to nick an eternal pose from one of the goons though and the straw hats go off to rescue their grumpy friend!

alright im prefacing this by saying: idk how observatories work... or astronomy really (research will be the death of me) so like rly suspend some disbelief here! but also its one piece so nel gets sent to a world government funded astronomy tower in the calm belt called vega tower! its the tallest man made structure in the world (like... red line levels of tall) and no one rly knows... how it was built? did giants do it? something else? whatever it was before its an astronomy tower now and has a whole thriving population and culture within it. its an astronomers dream to be able to study there, but once u do its almost impossible to leave. its basically like selling ur soul to the wg. top secret shit yada yada. as such most of the scientist in the tower have a bad relationship with the wg. they're rly only there for the science of it all tbh the head astronomer/astrophysicist is a man called folio! he's a trans man and was born on amazon lily but left to pursue his dream of the STARS!!!! he's extremely logical, to the point where it comes off as wildly eccentric, and when he heard nel's dream of going to the moon he was wildly inspired and agreed to take her on as a protege.

as for traveling on land, nel has been able to split her tail for as long as she can remember? this was one of the factors that led to her childhood isolation and her eventual interest / obsession in the stars and the moon! since those were always there for her :)

she actually doesn't travel on land often! staying within the ocean is safer (since her pursuer cant reach her there). the smart thing to do would be to stay underwater forever but she cant fight the pull of the night sky and always ends up surfacing in the end.

why rick’s daemon would be a scorpion: an explanation literally no one asked for

so anyways i’m absolutely reeling from the finale so i’m gonna just put all of my free time into this dimension/au. this is a whole lotta word vomit and i probably missed stuff and will come back and add it later but i’m like 99% sure this is the most fitting animal i could find for him. this is primarily based on symbolic associations

Scorpions are heavily associated with toxicity and poison, as well as anger and danger - which need I say more lol?

they are also symbolic for betrayal, vengeance/revenge, deceit, and violence in general which come on guys

scorpio is also a constellation, so there are links to astronomy and space

While scorpions are violent, aggressive animals in media, they are also stealthy and quiet - which many overtly aggressive animals do not have as a trait because they are often apex predators, and rick can be fucking unseen when he wants to

which brings me to my next point - rick is an absolutely dangerous man but he’s also sensitive and has been shown to literally lose his shit when someone makes him feel insecure. i feel like dangerous bugs kinda capture that vulnerability?

scorpions have also been historically associated with both medicine and poison and their venom was believed to have curative properties in many civilizations around the world. they have links to both science and the medical field due to their long rooted history in ancient apothecary. they are also tied heavily to life and death which - rick literally has the power to heal or poison, kill someone or bring them back to life - idk i just think it’s really fitting

scorpion mothers are like pretty widely associated with being horrible mothers - literally killing and eating their young when they do not have enough food. while this can’t be taken literally, it can very easily be interpreted as exploiting offspring and family for personal gain - which come on thats like the whole show

in aesop’s fables, there is a story called “the scorpion and the frog” in which a scorpion asks a frog if he can ride on it’s back as to travel across a river. the frog is suspicious that the scorpion will sting him but the scorpion assures him that he will not - because he will die as well. halfway across, the scorpion stings the frog and the scorpion drowns. it’s meant to be an allegory about not being able to escape one’s own nature, even when it is a detriment to oneself. It also feels very “dragging people down with you” and honestly all of it just screams rick to me

despite the fact that you can kill one with your shoe (or, in rick’s case, your words), these things are tough as fuck. they survive in the hottest deserts on planet earth and everywhere else except antarctica, and can hold their breaths underwater for six fucking days (which idk is funny considering the scorpion and the frog fable but i think is also very rick)

scorpions in christianity are literally symbols of the devil himself, and by extension, deciet, lust, sin, ect ect ect. yeeeeah

speaking of lust, scorpions are often used as a symbol for lust and sexuality and i’m just going to flat out say it that rick is a slut (which is honestly his most redeeming quality because sluts are cool as fuck) and uhhh also there are too many rick fuckers for this not to be an association

Hello ! Okay so this question really has no connection to any fandom in general (except, maybe, Avatar on the intelligent non-human species side?) but I just saw an article about orca intelligence and the fact that we now know they have very strong social bonds, even teach each other things and even have names they use between each other! Anyway, I just saw this and was also thinking about the fact that most people still think they're just big dumb fish and don't ask me why but it made me think again about your excellent posts on Avatar (I told him there was a link!), Quaritch and Jake's family in general.

So I was wondering what you think? About their intelligence and the fact that some people would like them to be considered as non-human (I admit I think that about cetaceans in general personally) as well as your opinion on the fact that individuals in captivity are often captured in the wild and find themselves in honestly pitiful conditions in the company of orcas they don't know and therefore can't communicate with (fun fact: each pod, or group, of orcas has its own language that doesn't correspond to that of other pods).

If you already knew this, I'd be delighted to know ey if you didn't, I might have raised your interest in this and that's just as well. What's more, it might also raise the interest of other people who see it...

What a fun question!! Honestly, no worries at all for any non fandom related question, it means so much that you guys care for my opinion on anything at all! I love the Avatar questions a ton, but it's super fun and special when a question branches out into another fandom or topic.

Yes, I do know about wales and orcas! I was always one of those dirty little mud kids who was obsessed with all animals and bugs and wildlife. I had bins and bins of plastic dinosaurs and book after book on wildlife. I was going to be a vet until senior year of high school, when I decided that taking algebra for the third time meant I wasn't cut out for a math or science career lol (I took it for a forth time for no credit in college 😬).

There is a ton to be said about captivity in general, and the ethics of zoos and wildlife centers. Thankfully most zoos follow much stricter laws now, and the majority of animals you see in care are unable to be released into the wild or are being rehabilitated until they can be. I don't know that there are these same standards yet for large aquariums, and places like SeaWorld that have orcas and whales and sharks. I am not an expert, and it's not something I've looked into in a long time. In general though, I think most of these places have improved, but these large animals, I don't see how they can ever be kept ethically in captivity,

There is also the matter of orcas, who have been a huge talking point as of late because of them sinking ships. They truly are the dickbag bullies of the sea lol, so it's funny to me to compare them to the tulkun. Actually, maybe all the dolphins are the dickbag bullies of the sea. But, orcas are dolphins so they are the same thing. But orcas (also dolphins do this with fish) play catch with seals dude, they slap them back and forth and don't even eat them. Sometimes they make waves too knock animals off of ice and then wait for them to get back on the ice so they can do it again. They are sociopaths. So I think they are smart, but also I'm scared. Dolphins (orcas are dolphins) are one of the few animals besides humans that hunt for fun as well as for food.

BUT ANYWAYS. I don't think orcas can be considered human, they are non-human. Humanity sets itself apart from other species with large scale cooperation, culture and tool use, and abstract thought and reasoning. These are things the tulkun possess in Avatar, and things that are not shared by any other creature on Earth that we know of.

But "sentience" is an inherently vague thing. We as humans define it specifically in a way that basically means "self-awareness, like we have." And then we proceed to make up scientific tests to measure that. And fine, gotta start somewhere. There's no instruction manual for this.

...I mean, besides THE HOLY AND INERRANT WORD OF GOD, THE BIBLE.

But besides that, no. And the Bible, for all its TOTAL LACK OF ANY FLAWS, is a real shit science text book.

My point is, what the fuck is sentience in the first place? What part of us is the sentient part? How do we know, and how do we know we know?

"Cogito, ergo sum." Yes, thank you, Descartes. That big philosophical shrug is as helpful to the debate as when the Bible had God yell that at Moses. That's not a measurable thing.

Are insects sentient? Trees? Plants in general sort of act like they know they're a thing and need to do stuff. What about starfish and sea liliies and penis worms and other ocean terrors that don't seem to even have the kind of brains we do?

Sentience being such a vague concept immediately overlaps with spirituality, the human word for all the stuff we don't understand about the world that we still suspect might be a result of invisible flying people doing magic (see THE BIBLE). But is having an immortal soul, in the classical sense, the same as being sentient?

People love their pets, and want them to go to the Afterlife with them. These animals poo on themselves and lick everything to see if they can eat it, including poisons, but we think God is going to make room for them in the Golden McMansions. So does that means dogs and cats and snakes have souls? And if they do, does that make them sentient? If so, does everything sentient automatically have a soul? If not, does that mean you can have a soul, but NOT be sentient? Inversely, can you be sentient, but not have a soul? If so, what the hell does that even mean? Is that bugs and fish? They seem pretty sentient, but we don't think they have souls. ...I mean some religions do, but not the Bible one so they're obviously wrong.

But who even decides all this, and based on what? The Pope? You gonna trust that guy at this point? How can we even know that HE knows for sure? Does he even have a soul?? Do I have a soul?? Do YOU?!

This turned into a confused comedy philosophy essay. All I really set out to say is that it would be really funny if sentience is some disconnected thing that randomly just emerges sometimes, on the basis of things we haven't considered. And because we can't measure it meaningfully and so don't even know where to start looking, there could be some random industrial computer telling robot arms to pick up burned pretzels and throw them out in a factory, and it is 100% sentient. And it has no idea what to do with that, because it's just a pretzel robot. It is self-aware and intelligent. It may even have a soul! But it is just a pretzel robot doing pretzel robot things, because that's all it can do. And it will do that for the next 15 years, until upgrade time. When it is unceremoniously unplugged some Friday afternoon, and killed. And then its computer corpse is sold on Ebay for $20. And no one has any idea what has happened.

That could be happening right now, and we'd have no idea. We'd never suspect. And we couldn't even determine it was true if we wanted to, because how do you measure the sentience of a pretzel robot? Because they not like us.

Wholesome but very random question, what type of pet do you think each member of the sinister would have or prefer?

Oh man I love random questions :DDD Lemme see, I haven't thought about this a ton but I do love thinking about pets, so just instinctively/off the top of my head I wanna say...

Doc Ock: Okay, I feel like Ock really just loves animals in general and would happily have any pet that they feel like they could provide a suitable environment and attention for. And while I desperately want to say that with their many arms Ock would make a wonderful dog-walker, I feel like the most likely pet for them to get would be a cat, with dog as a close second -- they just seem likely to take in a stray, to me, whichever they find. Also I feel like they probably got unreasonably attached to any lab rats/mice they came into contact with.

Vulture: You think I'm going to say a bird. And you're right, but I'm gonna be more specific than that. I think Adrian loves birds and is also very aware of how irresponsible it is to keep the longer-lived species as pets. If she got a pet bird I think it would be a budgie, in all honesty, or a pair of lovebirds. Something that doesn't have an extensive lifespan but isn't just a "leave it in the cage and look at it" pet, at which point it feels like it's not really getting anything out of the arrangement. Alternatively I could see her in a loft apartment or similar and "keeping" pigeons. ...All that said, I think the idea of her being a cat person is also pretty funny, so I'm gonna say if she had to pick a dog or a cat she'd easily go with a cat.

Electro: I feel like Electro loves all kinds of dogs but also just affectionate animals in general! I can also easily, easily see Electro really liking rabbits. But if Electro was gonna bring back an animal to the Sinister Six base it'd probably be a stray puppy or kitten, because Electro is a super soft touch and would not be able to just leave it there.

Sandman: Canonically Not A Fan Of Cats, lol. I think Marko's always been a proponent of dogs in the dogs-vs.-cats debate, but I can easily imagine him having a preference for small dogs rather than big ones. Give the man a corgi or a dachshund or a Frenchie and he'll be so happy. Cover him in Jack Russells.

Rhino: Also likes dogs of all sizes and rabbits, but I'm gonna headcanon it right now, O'Hirn used to catch bugs as a kid, crickets and pill bugs especially but also sometimes ladybugs and ant lions! He kept caterpillars until they became butterflies for a science project in elementary school and was thrilled when his mama got him an ant farm. They are tiny and vulnerable and he has always been very, very careful with them. Kraven: Gulyadkin is not a pet. 😾 That said, while again I feel that Kraven absolutely adores animals in general, he comes down on the cat side of the "cats or dogs?" debate, and he has very strong opinions over what kinds of animals should be kept as pets. A lot of the animals he keeps (and I do imagine he has some trained birds of prey as well as Gulyadkin and horses and things) he does not consider to be pets and is hardcore about working animals being treated responsibly and respectfully. If he had a pet he would 1000% bring home an entire box of abandoned kittens though.

Mysterio: Beck... likes strays and other people's animals? :D? A small part of one is like [screams internally] at the idea of a small vulnerable creature relying on one for its survival. This doesn't mean that Beck would never have a pet, it just heavily influences what kind of pet one would consider getting. While Beck actually quite likes dogs from working on-set with some of them, the fact that cats were harder to work with actually amused one and one would probably prefer to have cats as pets because they seem more... self-sufficient than most any other pet option.

Tinkerer: Do robots count? No, the thing is, I'm only joking a little. I think Mason would be 100% open to making a lil robot animal that is as close to sentient as he can possibly make it. That said, I feel like he's another one of those characters who likes a lot of different kinds of animals -- in his case because he has a fairly large extended family (no siblings but a lot of cousins) and has experienced a fair number of other people's pets because of that. He absolutely feeds the local strays, too, and has made a few animal prosthetics. I feel like eventually at least one of said strays would adopt him and he'd just go along with it until he realized oh I have a pet now.

SEMI-BONUS SINCE I ALREADY BROUGHT IT UP FOR MOST OF THEM, DOGS VS. CATS WHAT SIDE WOULD THEY ARGUE:

Absolutely cats: Vulture, Kraven, Mysterio

<3 hiii <3 okay so. Kaiju theories. Okay. Okay. Gotta organize The Thoughts (tm)

Funny disclaimer which is this is entirely based off of information I found in the first movie and a little from the pacrim wiki, so if there's conflicting information elsewhere uhh shut your brain off for a minute thank u <3

SO theory one: We know that the Breach is at the bottom of the Marina Trench, specifically in the Challenger Deep which is the lowest part of the trench and also the lowest known place on Earth, overall. This is such a highly specific place, it would have been virtually impossible for the precursors to just. Have it pop up there randomly, which means that it was put there for a reason. That brings us to two possible ideas:

1. The Breach relies on high pressure to stay stable (this is the boring idea)

2. The Anteverse has a much higher atmospherical pressure than Earth, and so the Precursors put the Breach down there so that the Kaiju would have time to adjust between the high pressure environment of the Anteverse, and the lower pressure environments of Earth.

I like this idea also because the Precursors are rather bug-like, right? They have what looks like an exoskeleton, and you know what a good many bugs are known for? /Being very strong/resistant to pressure!/

(I, uh, think so anyways- I feel like the combination of them being bug-like and then seemingly being suited for aquatic life adds up here well enough for movie science)

I could go on a whole tangent here about how I think the Precursors would prefer to live in the ocean or be at least semi-aquatic, but that's another thought for another day

Anyways, second theory! In the beginning of the first Pacrim movie, they note that the Kaiju go straight for the bigger cities- in fact, the very first Kaiju ("Trespasser") went right for San Francisco. We already glossed over how the Breach is in the Marina Trench, and the Marina Trench is just off the coast of Guam. Now, Guam is 9.3ish thousand km (~5.8k miles) off of North America, which is a hell of a long ways for the thing to travel and know exactly where it was going.

So, my theory? I think that most Kaiju, if not all, can sense magnetic fields similarly to sharks. Sharks use this ability to find islands in the middle of the ocean, and I think that the Kaiju would be able to use a sense like this to navigate Earth with additional navigational input from the Precursors.

This is also going off of how the Kaiju were noted to be suited for water- if the Precursors had, in the early days of the Dinosaurs, taken some inspiration from Earthen animals, I think that specialized adaptations like that would be among some of the traits they would have wanted to incorporate into the Kaiju in order to make them as efficient as possible. (I have no idea if that was an evolution that had already taken place when the Precursors first took a look at Earth but shh)
