Last movie: me and my roomate watched Villains, a horror movie but it wasn't very good.

Sweet savory or spicy? Hungry....nah savory first, sweet and then spicy. I can take a lot of spice.

Craving? I'm at a hotel right now and their connected restaurant has a seafood chowder soup.....👀🐚🦐

Currently working on? I'm studying for my CpR and National lifeguard courses coming up soon, creatively though I've got no projects.

Typographic Entomology

It’s almost impossible for me not to like this. Entomology related? Check. Awesome design? Check. Clever limitation with creative results? Check check.

The fact that these are made of typography is mind boggling. At first you might not even notice. That said, it can occasionally make the style feel inconsistent. Between the varying colours and line thickness due to the size of the type, certain bugs feel a bit out of place. But overall, I love the concept and some of my favourites are above. I also like the fact that each also includes measurements and the whole posters has been treated like a reference piece so it is like a stylised but still scientific illustration.

The idea of using typography for the icons is certainly unusual (and a great challenge to force creative thinking). While I may not be building icons out of type, I like this idea of something to give my icons a unique selling point rather than illustrative quality/subject matter alone.

Hello! I thought I should introduce myself and the purpose of this blog. Click below to learn a bit more about me!

Hi there! My name is Jenna Straughan and I am a fourth year Environmental Sciences student, majoring in Ecology.

I grew up in the Niagara region, in the heart of Ontario's greenbelt. My upbringing being so close to our province's natural beauty drove my passion today for current conservation efforts, with a focus on terrestrial ecosystem services. Specifically, I am invested in protecting our native species and natural areas through conservation, education and public engagement. I have a specialization in terrestrial ecosystem ecology, entomology, and scientific communication.

In the summer of 2022 I will be conducting research on the phenology and voltinism of the European corn borer as I pursue my Master of science (MSc) at the University of Guelph. #BugNerd

I am passionate about the outdoors and in my personal life I strive to step away from our ever-encroaching digital world and spend more time in nature.

This blog was made as part of my Nature Interpretation (ENVS*3000) course, in the final semester of my undergrad. I will make posts over the next twelve weeks that reflect on the course's content and hopefully will spark some engagement with my peers.
