Io, semplicemente me stesso, consapevole dei miei difetti e del mio pessimo carattere, ho scelto di mettermi in disparte per permetterti di essere te stessa e comportarti come preferisci.

Durante quest'anno mi hai confermato quanto avevo ragione. Quanto ti affanni a inseguire. Quanto desideri attirare l'attenzione su di te, fino ad arrivare alla storia che ti sei raccontata per passare bene, avere la coscienza pulita. Quanto hai preferito passare il tuo tempo con le persone nella chat pubblica online, anche quando eri fuori a cena o per strada con il telefono quasi scarico e volevi rimanere lì fino a quando la batteria non si esauriva. E tante altre cose...

Mi hai fatto rendere conto di tutte le bugie che hai voluto far credere e di non aver mai apprezzato nulla di me, nonostante tu abbia cercato di far sembrare altro.

Ma adesso lo so bene: di me non te n'è fregato un cazzo. Ti piace vivere la tua vita senza di me, come se io non esistessi. Quindi dopo tutto questo tempo non puoi improvvisamente apparire come la Madonna e scrivere «Ciao, se non avrò risposta, cosa che metto in conto sarà: non ti contatterò più. Mi sembra più che giusto che sia così. Quindi ti domando: 'Perché non mi saluti?». I motivi li sai. Non cadere sempre dalle nuvole. Non sei credibile.

Un giorno forse ti mancherò davvero… Ma a quanto vedo ti sei già ripresa alla grande, sono contento. Complimenti per il tuo rientro.

Io invece sono scivolata via e continuo a scivolare anche adesso, dentro queste righe che vogliono darmi una storia mentre in effetti non sono niente, niente di mio, niente che sia davvero cominciato o sia davvero arrivato a compimento: solo un garbuglio che nessuno, nemmeno chi in questo momento sta scrivendo, sa se contiene il filo giusto di un racconto o è soltanto un dolore arruffato, senza redenzione.

Hi! Can I ask you a “Ferrante question”? What do you think of the Lying Life of Adults, do you watched and/or read it? I read it and didn’t like it very much.

I think we already talked about this though? Here's my post about The Lying Life of Adults.

I watched the show but I wasn't impressed. The 90's Neapolitan details felt colorful, and the music was definitely a choice ("Sant Antooonio nemico del demoniooooo"). I even got a better picture of what it was to live in Naples, as a city, than what I got while watching MBF (which mainly shows the rione). The actors were okay, and it was nice to see Giovanni Buselli.

But the story... I don't know, it was never that compelling to begin with. Giovanna is experimenting with being a bad girl, so what? She barely does anything besides skipping class and touching some people a tiny bit. The brother and sister have a long-term feud, so what? They barely solve anything. The parents get separated and they're not dealing well, so what? Both felt very unrelatable somehow.

Still, I'll always be surprised at the cold reception that both the book and the series got (considering that this is Ferrante and thousands of people bought it anyway).

Ferrante herself has refused to continue the story for now (she left it open on purpose), calling it "un garbuglio" more than a novel. Maybe if the story would've been continued, we would've seen more of the perspective of the mother, the friend, the aunt, etc., which was probably the idea.

I have the feeling that Ferrante is going to be way more cautious now with starting new sagas, and may dedicate herself to completing and reflecting on her former works for some time. TLLOA was probably the product of an editor demanding a new, powerful book in the line of MBF, which had been so lucky in finding its audience.
