Where do you think it all went wrong with Riverdale?

honestly, part of me is like, the show's over and nothing but fandom matters. so who cares?

the other part of me loves to complain about Riverdale and will continue to do so until the day I die in the parking lot of Michael's Diner in Montgomeryville, PA at the age of 86. so, long-winded answer under the cut

I'm tempted to say it's the s4 b*rchie kiss. It was so wildly out of character for both Betty and Archie that it's laughable. You know how you can tell when something is just blatantly OOC with no justification? They...don't justify it. They find ways to dance around any interaction that might offer clarification. They mute the reactions of the characters who should be devastated by it. And then they jump ahead 7 years so it's easier to just handwave it away as something that happened a long time ago.

but the thing is, I did keep watching after that. I thought: okay, at least we should get an exes-to-lovers arc out of this, which is one of my favorite tropes. there is no way they would spend 4 seasons developing Bughead as this loving, supportive, communicative, sexy, and almost-unbelievably-compatible couple just to tear them apart and never do anything with that dynamic again. maybe it'll be even sweeter seeing them come back together after so much hurt and longing.

so, the episode that actually made me stop watching for good, with the exception of some standalones like The Jughead Paradox and the finale, was the s5 musical. that was when i realized that this team of writers was 100% willing, maybe even eager, to completely drop storylines they themselves had been building over the course of a season - do a 180 with all of the characterization and relationships - and then act as though the buildup they wrote never even happened.

in this case, i'm specifically talking about the Bughead reunion storyline they dropped in s5. i'm not going to pretend like it was a GREAT buildup - and it was mostly on Jughead's side, Betty's character in s5 was basically an emotionless misery bot that had sex sometimes - but it was there. Jughead told Tabitha he had unresolved feelings around Betty. that's followed by an entire episode that lays out Betty & Jug's time jump relationship, and how Jughead still believes she's the one who saves him from himself. they work on a case together, they start opening up to one another. Jughead's so worried about her he can't eat.

and then...you know what happens.

(i'll also note here that there was random bts stuff that strongly indicated the musical ep storyline had a drastic last-minute rewrite: lili tweeted a blue dress, suggesting the song with that line was meant for her character; RAS said cole had to do last-minute recording sessions; supposedly crew members have confirmed this was the case, too. since none of it's 100% confirmed you can take it all with a grain of salt, but i believe it.)

it was so fucking insulting as a viewer to give my time and attention to a show made by people who would not only randomly drop the threads they set up, but torpedo them altogether, and then behave like the fans are the ones somehow at fault for expecting a story that actually follows through on its own emotional and plot beats. we're just shippers, so our opinions are dumb and biased! it's just a tv show, so who cares! get over it!

so, i stopped watching, because i knew they would continue to write without any thought or respect for their characters or their audience, and therefore inevitably write themselves into another corner. and, shocker, i was right. they did it again, whisking everyone away to the 1950s because actually resolving any of the scenarios they set up was ToO hArD. why bother when you could just make every single character Righteously Angry and Incurably Horny all the time, lecture the audience about social issues that have already been mainstream progressive for the last several decades, and call it a "love letter" to your fans?

Gilmore Girls:

The revival really isn’t that bad, it’s just not what everyone wanted. It’s not even necessarily what I want but I enjoy it for what it is.

Rory really isn’t that bad, she’s just never been as good as anyone in the show thinks she is - because no one is that good. I don’t mind that her life fell apart and she had to try again, it’s the most relatable shit in the world. Characters having to rebuild their lives is very interesting to me, though.

Logan and Rory are like Luke and Lorelai: Rory is the hermit like Luke and Logan is the sunshine-y extrovert who gets her out of her shell like Lorelai does with Luke. Logan has always had more in common with Lorelai than he does with Christopher. (Also plays into my thoughts about how Rory and Lorelai are also two very fundamentally different characters and it's unfair to put Rory into the Lorelai mould.)

Logan isn’t the Tristan replacement, Jess was. He came in the show just as CMM was leaving and stepped into the role of Forrester’s antagonist/rival. Tristan and Logan are superficially alike but Jess and Tristan fulfilled the same role in Rory’s life, the unsafe option in comparison to Forrester. Tristan and Rory wouldn’t have been anything like Logan and Rory. I like Jess a lot more than I like Tristan so in a way i’m glad it worked out the way it did with CMM leaving. Also learning that Jess’ character was only created as a way to prevent Luke and Lorelai from getting together definitely colors my perception of his character arc.

Lorelai is right and Emily is right and that’s kind of the point. Lorelai did have a miserable lonely childhood with people who didn’t understand her. Emily did give everything she had to a daughter who rejected her. The point has always been that Lorelai did not belong in her parents’ world and they don’t understand that so they can only be hurt by her rejection.

Riverdale:

disclaimer: i saw like…ten episodes of this show.

1. The switch up on Alice Cooper’s character is terrible and I hate that people love her when she was clearly controlling and cruel to her daughters, they should not have made her a lovable character.

2. It would’ve been more interesting if Cheryl killed Jason. On purpose. I don’t want to elaborate too much because I have a fic in the works along these lines but this is the entire reason I started the show in the first place: I thought Cheryl was the one who murdered Jason and I was so into that.

3. Jughead should’ve been asexual/aromantic like his comic book counterpart. Not telling the cole sprouse fans not to thirst, y’all do y’all my babies tbh, just saying it would’ve been great center stage representation that the ace/aro community deserves and rarely gets. (Which is a large part of my disinterest in bughead.)

4. Betty and Cheryl have a more interesting dynamic than Veronica and Betty.

5. idek if this is unpopular or not but like this show basically ripped off every show ever so it’s really not that unique. it’s like Glee, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, and Twin Peaks had a baby and then no one ever told that baby "No" or gave it any structure so it grew up to be this mess who can’t commit to any storyline and just "yes and"-ed itself into the ground.

Alright! Riverdale season 2 rewatch is DONE!

This whole season is sooooo teen campy horror and I’m obsessed. I prefer this season over S1 for sure.

Having the Serpent/Ghoulie war off screen was not it… like… that was such a huge point and we saw none of it

Hiram Lodge was a GREAT villain, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, he was just sooo overused.

Look, someone has been smoking for a while. His anxiety was also probably high due to some of the questions. He asked if he could smoke. In a lot of pictures photographers take, he has a cigarette. The interviewer probably did not want to stop the interview every time a question got hard, and he needed the nicotine. He's never denied he's been addicted to that.

I like that he says he tries to fix things, but that doesn't mean he's totally open. I can be like this. I can be attractive to people who I feel might need me and how can I help them. I do what I can and sometimes they want more than I can give. We end up hurting each other, I end up shutting down and feeling not good enough. It's a cycle and sometimes it's hard to break out of.

I do believe he loved her. I do think they hurt each other. I also like how he owned that.

I think some of you are mad because he said that the relationship was more sexual than it was communicative. Some of the fanfics I read on Bughead are like this. They fight; instead of talking about it they have sex. If it's terrible, they take a break, and depending on the circumstances, they might end up back together due to the toxic pull of the sex was good; they felt comfortable with each other, and it was easy that way.

He said if he loved himself more, making it known, maybe he has MH issues, that the fixer-upper/nurse isn't always the best to have, and that perhaps he needed to focus on himself and didn't. That is nothing against her but him. He never blamed her for this, and he is saying he might have done more damage to that relationship because of it.

The pressure was by the crazed fans, a diluted parent, and probably the studio because they came out as a couple. Having to now been public so the network could use it, the paps trying to figure if they were on or off to every time he did a job, he was cheating with a co-worker. I'm assuming that's what he meant. I highly doubt he meant from her.

I liked the way he talked about his childhood. I didn't know that much about it.

I am glad he opened up, and honestly, he even took some credit for them emotionally cheating, which can be devastating as well, especially when you have anxiety and want to fix it, but if you are still closed off and not available, it can be tricky. He never said she physically cheated. He even clarified that.

He also didn't have a choice when this interview aired. He did it on Valentine's day, and his current gf gave him the okay to do it. So, if you want to get mad, you must blame the women who put it on Women's International day, which I had no idea about.

Chpni x reader anniversary

Toni and Cheryl were the great love story of riverdale high.Through all the varchie and bughead breakups and all of the murders and serial killers the couple had stayed strong. And tomorrow was the 1 year anniversary of when they got together. The 1 year anniversary or the movie date you had tricked them into. Which is why you felt so much pressure to give them the perfect day.

You had spent months planning everything out.

-First they'd get a breakfast in bed with all their favourites

- Then smithers would drive them to the bookstore (a romantic private date would be set up)

-Then they will be taken to the football field where I had planned to do a routine with the Vixens in Cheryl and Tonis honour.

- Then they will be taken to a picnic by sweetwater River where there will be easels and paints.

-And finally they will return to thistlehouse where I will have set up a private screening of love Simon under the stars (the movie they watched on their first date)

The thing I was currently stuck on was what to get them as a present.Veronica was coming over soon to help me brainstorm but as of yet I had nothing. Cheryl and Toni had gone to pops for a pre anniversary date so I was currently pacing up and down the stairs. Something Cheryl constantly scolds me for as I could get hurt. Honestly I'm not the clumsy

My head was pounding as I opened my eyes to be met by the harsh light on the ceiling of the hospital room.

I could vaguely hear Veronicas voice calling my name and could see flickers of raven hair above me as my vision became less blurry.

"V? What happened?" I croaked. My throat felt rough.

Veronica handed me a glass of water as she began to explain

"You fell down the stairs you clumsy idiot." She replied rolling her eyes.

"The doctor said you have a concussion ,a broken ankle and a sprained wrist. They want to keep you until tomorrow night for observation." She explained

"What tomorrow night no I can't it's Toni and Cheryl's anniversary tomorrow." You replied trying to sit up but Veronica held you down.

" Y/n your hurt I'm sure they will be more worried about that then they're anniversary." She said shaking her head.

"Wait have you told them yet? " You asked frantically.

"No you know they'd be down here already if I had. I waited a little until you woke up so as to not make them more worried then they needed to be." She explained.

"You can't tell them" You said quickly.

"What are you insane they'll kill me! And then you" Veronica replied.

It was true you had learned from past experience to tell Cheryl or Toni when your hurt or ill (Chapter 7)

"I know, I know but they won't enjoy there day otherwise. Come on V I've already booked and arranged everything. All you'd have to do is help smithers set up the movie night  under the stars and I've already got everything for it. I promise I won't let them blame you at all. Please V they do everything for me . Let me do this for them. "I ranted giving Veronica the puppy dog eyes.

"Ok fine I won't tell them. Well have send smithers over with a breakfast from pops and ill go make sure everything is set up at the bookstore and the house tomorrow. But what about the Vixens routine?" She asked still unsure.

"Ugh I forgot. Ummmm just show them the video from last practise it can be a surprise wirh breakfast." I proposed.

"Okie this might actually work. But if they get suspicious for a second."She warned

"Yh yh you can tell them" I agreed.

"And I'm telling them straight after love Simon.Because you should be leaving the hospital around then so if they want to they can come pick you up."

Veronica agreed.

"Yesssss okie thank you Veronica I love youuuuu" I said leaning over and hugging her before wincing in pain at my ribs.

"Woah what was that are you OK?"She asked concerned.

"No I'm good don't worry probably just a bruise" I said

"Now I gotta get online and look for a present for Cheryl and Toni. Thank god for next day delivery." I laughed grabbing my phone from beside the bed. Ignoring the pain in my side.

The next day I was woken up by my phone ringing . I winced as I got up the pain had now spread across my chest. I looked at my phone and winced. It was Toni. Oh no they knew. I also saw a text from Veronica.

V - I TOLD THEM YOUR SETTING UP FOR TODAY

I sighed in relief before picking up the phone and smiled through the pain as I answered the phone.

"Hey Toni"

"Hey nerd, your on speaker with me and Cher." She explained

"Hey Tiny" I heard Cheryl say.

"Are you guys having a good day?" I asked trying to hide the pain in my voice.

"The best. The breakfast was amazing babe and Veronica told us you've planned surprises for us today and they showed us the video. Which by the way Cheryl is pretty pissed about. "Toni laughed.

"What why?" I asked.

"Well excuse me shortie but I seem to remember you telling me that you cant dance for the life of you and that one time I tried to get you to audition me and Toni had to drag you there kicking and screaming and then you sat on the floor reading the whole time" Cheryl said . I could hear Toni laughing in the background.

"Yh but this was for you guys its different and no I'm not auditioning for the Vixens this year." I said before Cheryl had a chance too.

" No audition needed babe and we'll see. We have our ways." Cheryl said. I could hear the smile in her voice.

"Whatever. Anyway you guys should go you need to get ready for the first surprise. " I laughed.

"You really didn't have to do any of this you know" Toni chimed in.

"Of course I do I love you guys. "

"Awww we love you too nerd. Will you be there?" Toni asked as I heard them moving around.

"Uh no I can't sorry I have to set up some stuff for tonight." I replied.

"Fine but we'll see you definitely see you tonight right. Don't think we won't drag you kicking and screaming again. Especially if your overworking yourself." She reied sternly.

"Yh I know don't worry and yh you'll see me tonight " I relied giggling. As we all said our goodbyes.

Third person pov

Toni and Cheryl had spent all day being driven around by smithers to all of the surprises y/n had planned. It was arguably the best day if their life. Except for the fact y/n hadn't been there. For their anniversary present y/n had ordered them heart necklaces with a T for Cheryl and a C for Toni.

They were currently watching love Simon whilst Veronica was pacing around the house stressed. She hadn't been able to get in contact with y/n since she had spoken to Toni and Cheryl this morning. She was going to kill her is she was just trying to dodge telling Cheryl and toni about her accident.

Outside Toni and Cheryl were cuddled up on the grass watching the movie, reminiscing about their first date.

"Remember the race when we first met?" Cheryl asked smiling.

"How could I forget? Out of the way cha cha. I was born for this moment" Toni imitated laughing as Cheryl smacked her shoulder laughing.

"I'll never be able to thank y/n enough for setting us up on that movie date." Cheryl smiled.

"Hey next week will technically be the anniversary of us three becoming friends. You know that first time we held her hostage on movie night " Toni laughed.

"Oh my gosh TT we have to do something special."

"Yh of course.We'll spoil her rotten. We could have a marvel movie marathon ooh and get her a necklace that matches ours." Toni said

"Ooh and get her anything she wants from the bookstore. Ooh and take her to the carnival it'll be in town next week." Cheryl said getting excited.

"Definitely. Speaking of that little nerd, where is she?" She asked as Veronica walked out to them looking pale and shaking.

"Guys we have to go." Veronica said tears prickling her eyes.

"What what's wrong " Cheryl said grabbing Tonis hand.

Veronica took a deep breath before explaining.

" Yesterday Y/n fell down that stairs. I came over to help plan today and I found her unconscious so I brought her to the hospital and everything was fine. She only had a few minor injuries and they wanted to keep her in till tomorrow night. So she convinced me to help with today and then we'd tell you now."

Toni and Cheryl were overcome with worry. They'd already stood up and made they're way over to Veronica ready to speed to the hospital. Cheryl ran into the house to get the car keys

"Why the hell wouldn't she tell us this,  why the hell wouldn't you tell us this? Ugh I'm gonna kill her." Toni exclaimed

"I can't find the damn keys." Cheryl yelled from inside the house. You could hear the tears in her voice. Toni ran inside and Veronica followed after them. Stopping them once they reached the car.

"Guys wait I need to tell you something else. " Veronica said taking a deep breath and raking the keys from Cheryl's hand.

"Well y/n hadn't been answering her phone all day. And well. And the hospital just called. Something happened ... "

3 months later

"And your Lockers just down here." Betty explained, as her and Veronica were giving the new girl a tour of riverdale high

They stood at her locker explaining her timetable before the girl got shoved to the side. Toni storming past her.

"Sorry about her." Veronica sighed.

" That was Toni Topaz. Just try to avoid her." Betty explained.

"And that is Cheryl Blossom" Betty said as she nodded towards the herd of Vixens walking down the hallway. Cheryl leading them.

The HBIC walked up to the three with a fake smile.

"Betty, miss another Vixens rehearsal and your off the team." She stated.

" What Cheryl she told you she was visiting her sister in hospital." Veronica defended.

" Was I talking to you?" Cheryl sassed  turning to storm off but stopping as she saw the new girl stood their. The bitchy look dropping from her face. She looked at the small girl holding her books. Going pale as if she'd seen a ghost. Then quickly shook off any look of emotion and stalked down the hallway.

"What was that about?" She asked. Turning to Betty and Veronica. Who both shared a look of sadness before replying.

"Okie so last year. Cheryl and Toni were the it couple of riverdale high. And they kind of adopted our friend y/n into their relationship. She was Cheryl's best friend and is the one that actually set then up. They were a trio. You couldn't have two without the other." Veronica explained. Tears coming to her eyes as she stopped to take a breath . Betty putting her hand on Veronicas shoulder before continuing for her.

"Well a few months ago. Y/n had an accident. On Cheryl and Tonis anniversary as well. Veronica found her and took her to the hospital and everything seemed fine but we'll. She passed away the next day. Toni and Cheryl got there just in her final moments and she died in their arms."

Betty explained taking a deep breath.

"You kind look like her. I guess thats why Cheryl got upset when she saw you. Maybe try to avoid her and Toni." Betty suggested before quickly directing the girl to her next class and consoling Veronica.

And so as the greatest friendship Cheryl and Toni had ever been a part of died. So did their Love story.

Riverdale Final Season Thoughts 7x01-7x13

I've been watching the final season and I've got 7 episodes left. While the show was never amazing, it was at least somewhat decent for the first 4 seasons. Then it was like the writers decided, 'who gives af, let's just write the craziest and stupidest stuff we can come up with and call it good writing'.

I'm loving all the Jeronica friendship scenes. I wish there had been more throughout the show, but I'm definitely enjoying them in this last season. The Jeronica kiss in 7x04, I loved it. Too many disgusting Barchie scenes. Not enough Bughead scenes. Loving the Choni stuff, but I wish Cheryl would be able to be herself and be able to be free and with Toni. Her parents and brother are still complete a-holes and I wish they would be killed off. Alice is still a total female dog to Betty, and Hal, too. They both need to be killed off as well. Ethel's parents suck and needed to be killed. She got screwed with Alice dumping her in the Sisters of Quiet Mercy. The principal and psycho therapist need to be killed, too. Pop's is still great, love him. I still like Fangs, and Kevin. Tabitha still annoys me, but I'm glad that she and Jug aren't getting too many scenes together. It's tolerable. Despite how much I hate Archie, I like that he's been a good guy to Cheryl. I like that he's been a decent friend to Reggie. I've liked seeing Archie's Mom, but could do without the a-hole uncle. Too much shirtless Archie. I love that Jug gets to write, even if it's just comics. Too much talk about how a woman's place is in the home, and she shouldn't have a career. Not a fan of Betty and Cheryl being a beard for Kevin, but I understand since it's the 50's. Don't like him and Clay and Archie also being a beard for Cheryl and Toni, but again, I get it. Cheryl's parents and brother are still complete psychos. I don't like the stupid 50's version of Sheriff Keller. It's just wrong! I hate this guy, for making Kevin feel bad. Archie's uncle is such a dick for talking bad about Kevin. Hate that guy. At least in the regular Riverdale Sheriff Keller is okay with Kevin being gay and is there for him. In this stupid 50's version, he's just as much of a tool about it as everyone else. The Julian version of Cheryl's brother is such a tool all the time I can't stand him. Jughead nearly got expelled for writing gruesome horror comic books which is just ridiculous. The whole Kevin and the prostitute storyline made me sad, and made me want to punch Julian as well. I still don't like Archie, but he's being a good friend to Kevin in that episode, and he got him out of the room before he had sex with the prostitute and got more confused and hurt emotionally. Betty embarassed Alice on the Riverdale Grandstand show, in an effort to get kicked off of it, and Alice guilt tripped the hell out of Betty. It's some BS. Alice disowned Betty until Mary gave her a smack down talking to, which she needed. Archie still wants to be friends with Kevin and Clay, even knowing they're both gay, which is good, and makes me actually start to like Archie a tiny bit. I've got 7x14 - 7x20 left to watch. I'll probably finish the show tonight or in the early morning of tomorrow. I'll actually miss the show, well, I'll miss what the show was like in the first 4 seasons when I really loved it. Now, I simply tolerate it, and want to see what happens, which is why I'm even watching the final season. I was hoping that we wouldn't have to see Veronica's a-hole Dad, but unfortunately, he was in a few of the episodes, so that hope is lost. I liked seeing her Mom, though.

Your metas are phenomenal! I realized while reading your take on Barchie that even though I'm with you on shipping Brucas and Bughead, Barchie is for me a worse ship than Leyton. Part of that is no doubt due to the fact that for all of OTH's problems, it's imo not nearly as awful as Riverdale quickly becomes after the first one or two seasons. It's mostly just that there's a lot more to leyton imo. Like you and I might not like them or buy that they have true love or even very good chemistry, but I can at least see why others view their story and see them as in love. But with Barchie it's like you didn't even sell me on them being genuinely close friends let alone in love. As you point out their entire relationship seems rooted in childhood memories, not in any sort of present day friendship and connection. And then they go from literally almost never even having conversations and both of them having years-long relationships with other people they love to being 'friends with benefits' and even then there's no real feeling or substance or connection or anything, you know? I'm not phrasing this well, but I just feel like Barchie is so hollow and empty. I may not personally like Leyton, but I can objectively acknowledge that at least there's something there---Barchie is just kind of total nothingness that the writers 75% into the series started pretending was meaningful. And again your metas are such a gift!

Yeah. My feelings about Leyton vs Barchie are complicated for that reason. The love story between Lucas and Peyton bothers me because in my opinion, there's plenty wrong with it from the beginning. It's based in something that feels very shallow with the narrative claiming there's this deep, intense connection rather than showing it to us. Then when Lucas and Peyton finally do decide to get together, it's behind Brooke's back. Their affair leaves Brooke with a lot of trust issues. And then, Peyton and Lucas have the audacity to stab her in the back a second time, after they've spent the past season and a half claiming they'll never hurt her again and that the circumstances are now different. That being said, the fact Lucas and Peyton's feelings are established as a mutual thing from the very beginning means that when late season 3 and season 4 heads back to LP, it's rooted in something believable. If nothing else, I can appreciate that One Tree Hill properly showed that just because your intentions are supposedly good and what you have is "true love always," that doesn't mean other people's feelings don't matter. A lot of time was devoted to Brooke eventually finding her own "true love" and working past the double betrayal of Lucas and Peyton.

In the case of Barchie, 100%. It really feels like in the beginning, the plan was to move away from the Betty/Archie/Veronica love triangle that had dominated the comics for decades and explore other things. Betty was allowed to want things other than Archie and to have a real, genuine relationship with Jughead where she was both happy and fulfilled without feeling as though she'd missed out on not winning the golden cock, so to speak. Betty and Veronica formed a strong friendship based on more than competing over the same guy. Even Archie seemed to have a strong preference for Veronica over Betty in spite of occasional moments like "a part of me always thought.." at the end of season 1. The writers set up their eventual relationship and cheating in an extremely poorly done way. They even used flashbacks during the big Origin of Love scene, but it only flashed back to the first two episodes of Riverdale and their season 2 kiss because that was the beginning and end of their BA build up. And absolutely! I didn't detect any true fondness or interest in the Betty/Archie relationship during seasons 5 and 6. It felt like they were checking off things on a list. Like, they have to live together, get engaged at some point, become official, say I love you, blah blah blah. It's like, they decided to fulfill every BA's dream and then literally blew up the universe. I honestly think the writers hated their jobs by the end and resented their fans for still caring about the characters and relationships established years before. Still, it's upsetting that Jughead and Veronica weren't allowed to voice the fact that they were hurt over Betty and Archie betraying them. Unlike on One Tree Hill, it was as though they walked on eggshells and went out of their way to ensure nothing was the slightest bit awkward for Betty and Archie (but mostly Archie because Betty at least emotionally suffered for years over what she'd done while Archie didn't seem to have the slightest bit of shame or guilt). As much as I hated seeing Brooke heartbroken and disliked the effect it had on her friendship with Peyton, that's more honest to me that both Veronica and Jughead never properly acknowledging that Archie and Betty had been in the wrong and needed to make amends.

2023 FFRC - July🌞

Hello friends! July passed in the blink of an eye. I'm definitely not looking forward to the end of summer (because it snows like 9 months of the year where I live and I just want to freaking enjoy my back-yard okay!?) Anyway - I hope you've all been enjoying the sunshine.

As far as the @fanfic-reading-challenge goes- I’m 5 tasks away from finishing the whole thing - (4 of which I can’t finish until December) so that’s neat. Gotta get up to 15 million words and then I'll just be waiting to finish the monthly tasks. This month I got to help Juulna sort out next year's list of tasks though and that was a super fun time.

As you can see, I read lots of really great stories this month. I reread a lot of fic and then double read fics too - there isn't a lot of new content for Wenvier so I reread over and over again. It's never a bad time to reread. I also read a Needle Bughead story that I'd held off on because of the tags - but it was wonderful - as all of her stories are. I'm glad I came back to that one. And given the circumstances, I think I'm going to deep dive into some Fexi favourites this week - so if you have any suggestions, please send them my way. 💔

Xavier Knows Wednesday Loves Him (series) by Agmo (Wenvier - T/E 4 fics) 

Summary: Xavier keeps a running list in a notebook in his desk drawer.

Notes: This story started out with one story with bullet points of how Xavier knew Wednesday Loved him - then expanded into this SUPER cute fic with a chapter for each one of those points (but the chapters are sometimes only a few lines long). Then there are a couple more one-shots to really flesh out some of the bigger points. And each and every one of them was delightful. All told, the series of 4 stories is only 20,000 words, so it's not long but it's wonderful and funny and touching and perfect. Give it a try!

Starving Faithful by @shesonlylittle (Fez/Lexi- E 1/1)  Summary: In most respects, he’s a nineteen year old. With the glaring exception that he can feel where his wings have been clipped— and that he can nudge the material world a little, here and there, from time to time.  He has childhood memories, a normal human’s wants and desires, but he also knows he’s got a divine mission. And that he has it because he fucked up somehow. Ash was supposed to be his redemption. He was supposed to watch over him, keep him safe.  -- or: Fallen Angel Fez has one last shot at redemption, his new charge Lexi Howard. Guardian Angels probably shouldn't be down bad for the humans in their safekeeping, though. Notes: I have a lot of feelings right now. After yesterday's news - the first thing I did was go find and read a Fexi fic to calm my broken heart. This one is SO good. Fez is SO well written. And there is a lot of neat religiosity that fits with him too. It hurts to read because we've lost Angus - but it has a happy ending and it's beautiful. So you should read it too!

I’m not against childhood friends to lover/unrequited love tropes btw. For a certain fan group out there that acts like a blond and red haired Judas on RD are an ideal trope. I’m against RD’s warped presentation of it. Also, I like the actors here better. 

He actually cares about her, just completely blind to his feelings and immature among his “friends” ribbing but that’s fine because I prefer that type of drama where evolve from a boy to an adult than out of blue cheating arcs. She is also reportedly going to evolve from seeing all hearts and flowers practically worshiping him to seeing him as a good but flawed man as a result of his misstep with his friends. Vice versa for how he sees her too. She has her flaws too and not just his and his sister’s sweet loyal sounding board and honestly...he’s already shown a partiality for that edge to her she’s shown him a couple of times. Their adult versions will balance well.

Classic tropes are popular for a reason and I don’t hate them for the trope itself. 

I hate the red head on RD because he wasn’t blind to the feelings, he just wanted to shelve her until or if ready to commit and didn’t care who he hurt including his “best friend” to maintain that status quo while using countless women. I hate the blond on rd because she led a good man to believe he wasn’t a place holder until the red haired Judas made a proposal and shattered him. They are selfish, shallow, incapable of love and have shown NO growth in 10 year’s and NEVER humble themselves to apologize. They are toxic.

Whereas the two from this show do experience consequences to their actions and learn from them. Grow from them. His careless panic’d drunk comment at her family’s ball and with her the complicated role she has had with his family and their scandals. Mostly her actions were meant to help but weren’t entirely selfless. Also, as noted before, better actors....oh, and he can actually sing well....

That is really the difference for me. I don’t care if a character does something wrong. Drama has to be propelled by something. I just want it to make sense to the character AND accountability and growth follow. THIS is where Riverdale fails. THIS is why the show has never recovered from the cheating arc. They denied this for the characters because it would have placed Betty and Archie in the wrong and RAS just couldn’t tolerate letting the Judas’ be viewed less than favorably by anyone but Jughead...who he writes the rest of the town as seeing as a loser.

AND THIS Betty stans is why you’ll never get Bughead back. More so even than the actor’s breaking up. It’s because for all the talk by Ted of “real life”, they would not allow real life consequences to befall Archie and Betty’s actions. You could end the show with Jughead and Betty but Bughead will still be dead. Because neither Archie or Betty ever really paid or learned from what they did and it impacted how the audience viewed them and viewed Bughead. That can’t be repaired with a belated apology and let’s start over in last episode.
