What is the difference between a goblin, a hobgoblin and a bugbear?

(Warning, if this is a joke, I have absolutely missed it so here is my genuine answer with 100% sincerity because this is my intrest.)

The Short answer: Absolutely nothing! Much like how there is 'DOG' and then there's many sub BREEDS of dog (Greyhound, chihuahua, great dane, etc.) They are all still DOG! Gobs, Hobs and Bugbears are all technically members of the Goblinoid family and share similar genetic coding. In theory, a Hobgoblin and a Goblin could technically have a child with no genetic complications the same way a corgi and a great dane can (As ill advised as it is...)

The Long answers-

Goblins are short usually in the green spectrum of color creatures and the primary image that pops up when you think goblin. Their noted features being short, having sharp pointy teeth, usually large ears and being very clever while also being not so clever or sturdy. They're quick thinkers but seem to be taken advantage easily by others

Goblings in real world folklore are little tricksters who live in the area. Their name origin ranges from 'hollow in a rock' to 'knave' to 'trickster' In Eurpoean folklore they're primarily tricksters, mainly existing to be a bit annoying and inconveniencing to humans-which makes sense since they're often classified in the fairy family. But Goblin folklore exists around the world, in South Korea, Goblins reward people who are good and punish those who are bad.

(I cannot in good conscious post a picture of what people think is the real world goblin looks like due to the fact goblins are often used to convey antisemitic propaganda against Jewish people. So just use your imagination and google at your own discretion.)

Hobgoblins are basically if you had a goblin and asked if you could supersize it for 50 extra cents. They are a military based people with oddly enough no military. They're devout warriors who believe cowardice is the worst feature a person could have.

Hobgoblins in actual real world folklore are actually helpful creatures who will help out around the house in exchange for food (usually small easy chores); sometimes playing mean pranks, or in some cases, actually curing what could be fatal childhood diseases (like whooping cough) Some believe them to be more closesly related to the Brownie, a house fey that takes care of the house if you truely need the help. The Word 'Dobby' (best known thanks to HP) is actually the name of one of these Hobgoblins who could cure illnesses.

(I always personally liked the Spiderwick Chronicles design for Hobgoblins as it sort of matched what I see in my head more.)

A Bugbear seems to be sort of the line between goblin and hobgoblin-while being very very big and strong, but still frequently being taken advantage of as a 'slave' race. Bugears and Goblins seem to coexist quite often-with a Bugbear leading a tribe of Goblins; possibly in a sort of symbiosis. I personally like them-they look like an old school 70s design of a werewolf.

In realworld folk lore-a Bug bear is the origin of the word 'BugaBoo' or 'Boogeyman' It is an old english world meaning to 'frightened' and was basically a passive threat parents gave to their children to behave or the 'boogeyman' will come and steal them away. Sometimes described as the terrifying spirit of a man-other times as...a literal bear. Hence the name.
