Spike: Feel like a bit of the rough and tumble? Buffy: What?! Spike: Me ... you... Patrolling? Hello? Buffy: Oh. Uh ... I ... should stay. Maybe tomorrow. Spike: It's not like I don't already have plans. Great Pumpkin's on in twenty.

in lieu of a halloween party
~ 10pm, sunday, oct 29, 2023
if i listen really closely i can hear the quiet snoozy breathing of the sweet black cat who now lives in my room! oh, now she is purring.
(contains minor mention of the study of death/dead bodies, but also cat pictures, classical music, and minor spoilers for the end of the most recent season of star trek: strange new worlds)
reading more victoria goddard (blackcurrant fool is somehow *even* *more* for medievalist academics, they visit fantasy university and then the main character saves the day through the power of his dissertation research for crying out loud), some assorted libby holds from jenny odell and amitav ghosh, some kj charles inspired by the medieval mlm romance i finished a few weeks ago (which was great but i was so taken with the idea of posting a whole historical assessment that i scared myself out of talking about it, so maybe next time).
but the book that's been the biggest presence in my life lately has been the audio book version of mary roach's stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers, which i picked up because it had a little Moment back when it came out and i remember thinking that an approachable, sympathetic look at this kind of medical history would be fascinating. and it is! it is just as full of interesting information and humorous, humanizing turns of phrase as you'd like! roach doesn't hesitate to ask, like, intense questions of the people she interviews, nor does she ignore or downplay various gruesome topics, but the audiobook narrator has a hint of a southern accent and gets the mix of tones of voice (from ironic to earnest and back) really nicely. and also, sometimes i'm glad i'm listening to it as an audio book so i don't have to consciously continue turning pages, it'll keep playing even if i stop listening or need to disengage, because there's no shortage of actually quite challenging material. not for the faint of heart, but also, i can't regret reading it.
watching the new season of ghosts from the bbc! the second season of ofmd of course, both because it was fun and because i had to out of self-defense; uhhhh what else this month has been so long and also so fast! the musical episode of strange new worlds which was GREAT. how good were some of those songs!! like on their own, i would listen to nyota and christine and la'an's songs-- reminded me of the mix CD a friend made me for a birthday one year that mixed, like, barenaked ladies with some songs from the buffy musical episode. then the finale of this season which (minor spoilers here) i found actually so compelling, like, i've been mildly ehh about a lot of the gorn stuff (not la'an, but the concept of the gorn always feels very old-school scifi and the more serious they try to play it, the worse that effect usually) but then the monster design and movement when they finally appear on screen? excellent.
though to be entirely honest, the thing i've come back to and watched/listened to most consistently has been the new series of dimension 20, burrow's end. i managed to tune in as a campaign was starting, and actually more or less keep up! huge for me. the bear in ep 2 was all-to-close to some of the body horror i'd just been reading about with stiff, so this month has been 'so you'd like to get better about dealing with body horror?' for me in a way. unintentionally. i think i am appreciating this series more than i would have if i hadn't read and enjoyed watership down a few years back, but the added edge of, like, for-real magic from the d&d elements makes it even more fun. i love the new (to me) players, i love seeing the old ones in their new roles, i love that while the conceit seems to be 'humans are like eldritch horrors to woodland creatures' on the surface, there's also clearly something (or things?) else going on.
listening checking in on my spotify daylist lately to see what moods i've been assigned (soul-crushing once, which was wild to see as a genre, but goblincore also so. whatever i guess!) paper writing lockdown included more autoheart, more yws gwynedd, and like a 24-hour lockdown on @lessthansix's 'deferring panic' playlist, from which i share the following track as a thank-you:
playing tuned into dnd as a virtual player tonight so that i could stay home and supervise the NEW BABY aka this little (large) black dumpling of a cat who i cannot quite believe is my very own. playing such classics as 'ribbon on a string' and 'this is a ball that makes food come out when you play with it, ooooooh' and 'i hope my eyes feel normal again after i stop putting my face directly on you so much and i have not somehow developed an allergy to cat dander in the six weeks since we last had a cat come visit'. playing the classic game, 'so you think you can be responsible for another life form! and are you willing to risk an increase in your experience for loss in order to gain an increase in your experience of love?' (also while we're here: why is naming the hardest part of any endeavor. naming wifi networks, naming pokemon, and now this, a real live creature! who i want to treat with love and also humor, while showing wit and personality at the same time. hell.)
making fixed up a sweater my housemate was going to get rid of. i am not, habitually, a fibercrafter (though not for want of opportunity or, even, interest sometimes), but this made me want to find other easy and quick things to do with yarn.
before: big fuck off hole between the cowl and neck line
after: used some yarn of a similar weight /softness that i already had, so it doesn't match but it's not like you see it. hidden little necklace of pearls.
working on writing a paper for my first ever 30-min conference presentation, which is also going to be the first time i submit a paper ahead of time for someone (a professor i do not usually work with, but whose work and career and writing i admire) to read and give real comments on. this is fine. i am simultaneously trying to use this as an opportunity to squish an entire chapter's worth of notes and observations and ideas into a single presentation, and trying to not do that. but i want her take on all of it! i also...do need to write all of it. but getting a chance to slow down and take a bit of extra time with it was also very welcome. gave a guest lecture this week on a subject only vaguely related to my own work, which required a lot of extra reading (not even to know what to say, but just to be confident that i wasn't missing anything massive), and also did organize my department's halloween party, so. it's been a busy last ten days, and i'm excited to wrap some of this up.
bonus: cat pictures! thank you for reading this far, i think we will be going with luna? her grace, lunette st. cat, first marquise of dumplingdom. something.

hello, love your blog! it’s so fucking funny how you’re a lesbian motogp blogger who is into buffy, bc hey that’s me too but actually I first encountered your blog bc of your smallville posts. not to mention tennis (which I was only a very casual fan of thankfully afdhjkk)…….cool to know that there are several ppl like this apparently sgfhhjhjk.
anyways, buffy s6 is my beloved season and I like it for how dysfunctional it is. the only season I might like more is maybe s5. I am a spike fucker unforch
and as for motogp? sachsenring 2003 made me giggle. very embarrassing for you valentino. by 0.06 seconds??? and commentators made it worse by crowning him a winner before they even crossed the line. you just know if positions were reversed vale would capitalize so hard off this win, more ppl would be talking about it still. and well he did actually use that loss to reinvigorate himself. like valentino’s ability to make his wins (and losses too) narratively important is unparalleled. but regardless sete/vale rivalry is insane,
sadly only hot girls get it:(((
anon?? marry me??
such an incredibly funny overlap of interests sdfhjkdf well always nice to learn this is a Type Of Person who Exists. I love buffy season five!! I am very much a spike fucker!! undoubtedly one of THE great characters, him and buffy is one of those ships where I don't really seek out fics because it's like?? I'm actually thrilled with what canon gave me!! I love the slapstick, spike as a lovesick freak, the dark and toxic stuff where buffy used him as a way to punish herself, and all the more melancholic season 7 stuff where they found refuge in each other. spike is like. such a great Device to explore all kinds of emotions and themes and all that... so many of my all time fave eps are very much spike eps. love s2's school hard and halloween, s3's lovers walk, s4's something blue (also just like, so much of his s4 scenes, when they chain him up in the bathtub and against the chair and all that), s5's fool for love (!!!!!!!!!!!!! one of THE episodes, his 'death wish' monologue to buffy and then showing up wanting to kill her and ending up comforting her oh GOD), s6's life serial and doublemeat palace AND when buffy confesses to spike she was in heaven AND all their scenes in once more, with feeling, s7 the buffy/spike church scene.... spike's "all these years and there's only one thing I've ever been sure of" speech likeeeeee.... I get all the issues people have with that relationship and how it was written, I know it's not for everyone, and I don't even 'ship' them in the sense of thinking they belong together or whatever... but I just love it!! it compels me so much, did so when I first saw it and still does now!! and spike is such a FUN character, like they let him be pathetic, they let him be cool, and he's #gender enough that yeah he's very hot to me too. all those scenes where buffy's throwing him around,,,,, yes character of all time. just has a real place in my heart too idk like the emotional landscape really GETS me
sharp pivot to sachsenring 2003, which takes place a mere few months after the buffy finale......... that's as smooth a transition as I can manage yeah. thematic overlap between btvs and motogp question mark. the buffy x dawn dynamic is either a bit marc x alex or to a lesser extent vale x luca when u think about it? not just in the 'congrats you've spotted they're siblings' way, but well the siblings' respective statuses in the worlds of motogp & vampire slaying, and the older sibling often being 'prioritised' because they have a lot on their plates, younger siblings as a kind of way to keep them grounded and feeling human, also unconditional devotion to your younger sibling... plus actually all the death wish stuff, surely? the fool for love speech...
btvs and motogp both very much about the ties you need to the world, I reckon... also sports is inherently adjacent to chosen one narratives
ANYWAY sachsenring 2003, I think every detail about it is perfect!! whatever valentino says, I still reckon there's just no way he couldn't have made a move before that - and implicitly he acknowledges that by saying he will never leave it that late again. idk there's just something so deeply charming about that specific flavour of valentino to me, where he's so obnoxiously good he can get away a little bit with basically scripting his races BUT obviously that's only okay when he still ends up being the one who wins. and he gets so much shit for it!! it's so funny listening to the brno commentary like they are on his ASS and they're saying the italian press has been on his ASS and calling him washed and finished and even the commentary is going 'yeah he's been having a rough season' and it's very??
oh no! the horror!! what a flop!!
obviously in retrospect we remember it as a great season because after that he only lost one more race, but back then they didn't know that!! and at like. the perfect time of the season too, because obviously that's when you have to go off and Sit On It for the whole summer break and can't immediately redeem yourself.... but as you say, he used that!! it's part of his story now, it became such good fuel for motivation. like, the mistake itself is kinda.... I mean it's not great, but it's one of those things that also wouldn't be a massive issue if you did it five laps earlier? he basically just picks too defensive a line that ends up killing his drive out of the corner, allowing sete to beat him to the line. which - the bit that I imagine really got to him is how dumb it was. like it wasn't a riding mistake as much as it was a decision making mistake, it wasn't his race craft it was just a literal dumbass moment. it's silly!! it's both a moment that shows valentino was maybe a bit too cocky, but also kinda rattled by sete? that man got to him! he did it! he flapped the unflappable valentino rossi!
and it IS incredible how it's now not really Discussed any more, and in his autobiography it's so neatly integrated into his own narrative. like!! it's always the laguna 2008 and catalunya 2009 performances that get me - he knew those were going to be memorable victories IMMEDIATELY and he played to that!! kissing the corkscrew drives me insane because it's literally... he's doing this on the cooldown lap for something that happened LAP FOUR and wasn't technically the race winning move, or definitely not the only one!! but he immediately zeroed in on that element and his post-race narrative is unquestionably ONE of the reasons why that's something we all remember now. he gets it!!
the commentators did fuck him over though lmaoooo... I mean at least you have to say he learned from his mistakes. imagine losing a race by .06 and doing this in the very next race against the same guy
bringing back this too
sicko
it IS only the hot girls who get it but that's for the best....... only the select few can see the vision I fear
#faith/buffy is the one where I check the fic tag and get irritable about how it's not quite what I'm looking for#spike/buffy is the one where I stare into the middle distance turning it around in my head and then watch a bunch of fanvids#like faith/buffy is kinda.... the base dynamic is so great and also the post canon potential (ignore comics) is SO on point#and also because it's that fun dynamic where genuinely if they'd gotten together in canon it wouldn't have fixed shit?#but there's still so much More places you could go there... like they need to be put into situations yeah#whereas spike/buffy is like... wow. canon sure did explore that. I don't know what I'd WANT from fic#I like the IDEA that they can find each other again but I'm not even sure I really want to read about it happening#and of course weird spike/faith and spike/buffy/faith situations is what it's all about. like they're both so obsessed with her!!#that scene where faith in buffy's body is the first person to clock that spike is into buffy and then flirts with him... groundbreaking#//#brr brr#batsplat responds#crying i feel like getting to this blog via smallville and also being into motogp feels... so unlikely. congrats anon

Bonus Ep Recap: Spooky Season
Hello all. Rina and I share our picks for Spooky Season. These are not in rank order, ya'll.
Millie’s List The Stuff (1985) written and directed by Larry Cohen This movie is chock full of super fun satire. Way ahead of its time - it digs into the stronghold of viral marketing; our obsession with food and our want to fill the void w/a sweet treat, corporations selling their souls to make a buck. Well done Mr. Cohen. Also, if you have Michael Moriarity in your movie it’s gonna be a banger. 1 million corns up. Elvira Mistress of the Dark (1988) Directed by James Signorelli Written by Cassandra Peterson (Elvira, herself), John Paragon, and Sam Egan This movie is right up there with Beetlejuice for me but doesn’t get the same love. It has a lot of the same funny scary energy. Some really great jump scares, gooey monsters, and family drama. Not to mention Elvira is iconic - strong, beautiful and hilarious with some classic ditz. Gotta love her. Also 1 million corns up. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) Directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui Written by Joss Whedon This movie was life changing. Not only was it all the spooky things I love but I was introduced to one of the greatest female superheroes ever. I love the show but this movie has a special place in my heart. I love the early 90’s campiness of it. The love and reverence paid to the valley girl archetype and there’s some really classic Paul Ruebens post-Pee Wee that’s just the best. Rautger Hauer is both menacing and hilarious. All the corns. Babadook (2014); written and directed by Jennifer Kent Ok, like legit I haven’t been this scared since The Ring. I couldn’t sleep for days/maybe weeks after this movie. If you’re afraid of the dark - which I am - this is going to hit you like nothing else. Also, it’s also a “real” movie w/proper themes. It’s a wonderful play on the parent child relationship, especially parents w/neurodiverse kiddos. Amazing. All the corns, as well. The Color out of Space (2019); story by HG Wells directed by Richard Stanley You’ve already heard me talk about my love of this movie. It’s just great. Really gross. Really irreverent. Very scary. It has a lot to say and I’m here for it. You can never go wrong with a Nicholas Cage film. He sells the whole thing. All the corns facing up.
Rina’s List I was initially thinking of the quintessential fall horror movies that remind you of Halloween and the harvest and things like that. For that vibe, my list looked like this: Halloween, Sleepy Hollow, Pumpkinhead, Children of the Corn, Wicker Man. The Pale Blue Eye (2022) would be an honorable mention here (but ultimately a letdown). But I didn’t really feel like my heart was in that list. Although I fucking love Sleepy Hollow, and I definitely watched the Pumpkinhead series too much as a kid (shoutout to it ALWAYS being on on SciFi channel), what I really like to watch when the leaves start to turn and the days start to get shorter are movies that have a classic spooky vibe. What I mean by that is like movies that are foggy, and the character is basically alone. Maybe there’s a cool old creaky mansion (no longer in its prime/spendor), or a remote cabin. There are definitely scenes of the protagonist walking through a crunchy yard, or sparse, foggy woods.
With that in mind, here's my list of (fairly recent?) movie recs for the remainder of the Spooky Szn, in no particular order: The Witch (2015) - Robert Eggers’ full-length writer/directorial debut (sticking to our writer/director theme accidentally?) Also known as the V-Vitch. Maybe the ultimate harvest season, New England, spooky tale? It’s got it all: the unforgiving, remote wilderness; crops failing mysteriously; heavy religious overtones; creepy (and annoying) twins; virginal teen daughter; “is mommy crazy?”; goat. “Similar but different” bonus pick: Stoker (2013); also coming-of-age, teen girl story? The Awakening (2011) This movie is moody as hell! Fog; beautiful manicured grounds; cronchy piles of leaves; spooky boarding school; hollywood hunk Dominic West taking a bath; creepy lil kids; ominous warning from an old lady character; ghost hunting! “Similar but different” bonus pick: The Others (2001); also a story about a woman with a husband who went to (a different) war and wants to protect children? Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) I like this version over the 1973 original – it's a whole different vibe. This one is more, “parents not listening to the kid,” and the original is more, “is mommy crazy?” This one is set at a beautiful, old, Rhode Island mansion. Spooky groundskeeper; precocious little girl; new stepmom vying for approval; preoccupied dad; things going missing; things going bump in the night. “Similar but different” bonus pick: Silent House (2011); also a story where a woman is fixing up an old house to sell it? Deerskin (2019) Guy buys a deerskin jacket and goes off the rails. It was way too much money and he threw in a camcorder. “Similar but different” bonus pick: Creep Crimson Peak (2015) Gorgeous movie, saturated with color. The costumes, the house, the mysterious family secret. A little bit more of a late autumn/early winter movie but it fits the mood.“Similar but different” bonus picks: The Haunting (controversial hot/bad take: I prefer the 1999 over the 1963); also a movie set at a beautiful, haunted house with a dark and dangerous past?
Honorable mention: Not a Movie → The Haunting of Hill House Dishonorable mention: Sucked and was bad → The Lodge We asked ChatGPT to participate, as well. Here's what it said:
Then we were like - hit us w/a bonus.
Nailed it. Honestly, these are all just good. For any season. So, happy watching!
Have a rec? Add it up in our comments.

My Top 10 Favorite TV Halloween Costumes
Mysterylover123
#10. Daphne Moon as Elton John
Frasier 906 10/30/2001
This ep had everyone dress up as their personal heroes, and Daphne, ever the style icon of the cast, picks Sir Elton John. I wish I’d found more ‘guys as girls’ and ‘girls as guys’ costumes for this list, but this’ll do for Daph.
#9. Barney Stinson as America
Barney was always the best dressed of all the HIMYM cast, but definitely on Halloween, he pulled out all the stops in each of the eps. While I must give a nod to Top Gun, Karate Kid and Devil, this one is Peak hilarity Barney, and leads to the American Barney vs Canadian Barney fight. A definite Winner!
#8. Phoebe Buffay as Supergirl
These next two are both characters as Comic Book Heroes. Friends picked only from DC ladies, and Phoebe definitely nailed Supergirl. Monica’s Catwoman is pretty good too, but is a little dull compared to Michelle Pfeiffer’s look from the 92 film. Phoebe away!
#7. Stan Kyle Kenny and Cartman as The Avengers
And now the Marvel entry. Or rather the South Park boys as the Earth’s mightiest heroes. Even with Stan only present as Cap on an iphone, they still pretty much nailed it (If only they’d had Wendy to play Black Widow, it’d be complete!). I like how they all kinda picked the right one: Cartman as the Hulk, the cool and troubled Kenny as Iron Man, the stoic and nice Stan as Cap, etc.
#6. Mary Jane Watson as a Vampire
From characters dressing as Marvel to Marvel dressing as characters! I wish there were more Marvel shows with Halloween eps to draw from, but SSM will have to do. MJ as always is a fashion icon and her vampire costume is my favorite “sexy” costume for a girl on TV - because it makes sense for MJ’s character to wear something demonstrative.
#4. Clark Kent as Zorro
And now for DC Halloween costumes! Smallville’s Halloween ep is silly as f but it is fun to see Clark dressed as Batman’s favorite character. I guarantee you that’s why they did this.
#4. Ochako Uraraka as a Witch
Not sure where these costumes came from, but as usual Uraraka is the winner for best fashion sense of all the BNHA girls. She really likes dressing up as a witch, doesn’t she? Must be because she’s always DEFYING GRAVITY.
#3. Anya as a Bunny
Anya had by far the best Halloween costumes of anyone on Buffy, but this one definitely wins. In an episode all about confronting your worst fears, what could be better than to dress as your worst fear of all, BUNNIES?
2 Kyoya, Tamaki and Todoroki as sexy vampires
So what is the dude equivalent of the Sexy Lady costumes that pervade on Halloween? Well, if anime is anything to go by, it’s the Vampire Look. I picked from 2 different anime here, but Bishonen anime boys in Vampire getups are definitely a sexy pick-me-up for the ladies.
1 Leslie Knope as Rosie & Buttercup
Couldn’t decide between Leslie’s two big killer Halloween costumes so I picked both! Leslie’s definitely the Style Queen of Halloween. Rosie the Riveter and Princess Buttercup, a nice mix of red and blue colors. I hope I’m still this great at costuming in my late 30s. #LeslieKnopeisLifegoals

Andi Mack 3x17 Review
Arts and Inhumanities was a mostly good ep that struggled at times and sheds some light on what was cut and what was re-shot. Let’s dig in!
Re-shoots:
Adding a new section for this review since this is the first ep where the re-shoots and cuts really had a noticeable impact. The last Muffy scene at the school was definitely a re-shoot and it looks like the pro player plot will be something brief and focused on Buffy herself rather than Muffy, maybe even just some sort of montage, though why they decided to add that in I do not know.
Originally for 3x17, Garren was only on set the Saturday they shot the bowling alley scenes which were quite brief and didn’t really have a defined ending. He was on set for two days for the cut farm wedding ep so we’ve definitely lost a minute or two of Muffy scenes even with their replacement scene in 3x17. Which is sad for them but does actually bring down Marty to 3 eps in 3c just like TJ and puts Muffy and Tyrus at close to equal screen time.
It’s clear that these eps are taking place fairly quickly after one another and that likely the farm wedding would have been the very next weekend in universe with Something to Talk A-Boot taking place the school week after the wedding. It also means that regardless of what Muffy scenes we got at the farm, it ended in the same place as 3x17 with Marty telling Buffy they’re better off as friends which would have come off as pretty contrived at the wedding where he was her plus one. And still does tbh, but it makes sense that he wouldn’t want to get himself turned down again and it sets up Buffy having to confess in the finale.
I also wonder if the Cyrus and Jonah and Amber scenes at the school were also re-shoots. Afaik it wasn’t snowing when they were originally filming 3x17 in November and it was snowing when they filmed the school scenes for the re-shoots. Josh was on set that morning but left early that same afternoon which would fit with his brief role in the Jamber breakup. It may also explain why his ‘counselling’ of Amber didn’t really amount to much and if Jamber broke up at the farm wedding it would explain why she was even there and why Amber asks Jonah for space in 3x18.
Ham filmed some scenes for what was either 3x16 or 3x17 and there’s no talk of the wedding in 3x17 or even any sign that Bex and Bowie had an emotional talk just a couple days ago in universe. Obviously the new wedding is at the gazebo in 3x19. No mention of Celia and it seems likely that she may not appear again until 3x19 which is a sad loss of screen time for Lauren Tom.
Josh said some key plot drivers would be moved into 3x17 and the Muffy friendzoning definitely was and the Jamber breakup may have been. It also fits with Josh’s public comments, a week before he went back for re-shoots he posted an ask and talked about an upcoming ep they filmed at a farm where they were in suits so clearly he thought the farm wedding was still happening. Then as the re-shoots were wrapping up he warns us that things have been shuffled and cut but that the story will still make sense which fits with him learning the farm wedding had been cut and that quick re-shoots were done for the most important plot events.
It does raise the question of how much filler there was at the wedding if two major plot points could be boiled down to 2ish minutes of screen time combined. Certainly the main reason the farm wedding was cut was because of a lot of Ham screen time and the expense of re-shooting it but if a lot of the scenes aside from the wedding ceremony itself weren’t all that important than it would explain why they felt able to cut it. Now on to the ep itself.
Positives:
Really liked the Mack family scenes tonight, you could really see the familial chemistry that the actors have and it was great seeing Bex and Bowie being so supportive of Andi.
SAVA looks like a place Andi would love. Obviously she gets in (or gets in to another art school elsewhere) and I wonder how she overcomes the entrance requirements.
Loved the dance moms line. And the girlfriend in Canada and blame Canada lines. Didn’t think I’d ever hear a Southpark reference in a Disney show.
Really nice to see the kids just being normal kids and going to see movies
Emily had another great performance, 3x16 and 3x17 have been the most Amber development we’ve ever gotten. We see her hanging with some other girls and going to see a movie and learn that she’s really good at chess.
Jonah’s a mess but I always enjoy seeing him be dumb.
Pleasantly surprised that they didn’t make Cyrus good at chess and very glad that he didn’t actually get to play therapist because therapist! Cyrus is boring and rarely gives good advice.
Liked the callbacks to Cyrus wheezing and losing his shoes in the last Cyrus and Jonah scene. And Cyrus actually apologized! Glad he learned his lesson from when he betrayed Buffy back in S2.
Muffy scenes were good if brief. We really saw why they work when Marty insisted that Buffy needs to see a doctor, neither Cyrus nor Andi have the confidence to call her out when she’s wrong.
Not surprised that they made Rachel unlikable, it’s really the only way to excuse Marty’s emotional cheating. She didn’t even get his jokes!
Buffy’s ‘’why not?’’ was very revealing and Marty really isn’t doing a good job pretending to not like Buffy anymore.
Negatives:
It’s nice to get Amber development but not this late and not like this. There’s just no stakes to this plot because no one cares about Jamber and the show hasn’t given us any reasons to. Sometimes it seems like they went with Jamber just because they needed to keep Jonah as someone’s love interest while avoiding getting him back with Andi.
Wild that Amber was in 7 out of 25 aired eps in S2 and will be in 10 out of 20 aired eps in S3. There really was no need to have her be in so many eps.
Jonah’s character has taken a real beating. He comes off as untrustworthy, immature, flighty, and unreliable. It’s one thing to tear a character down but when is he going to be built back up?
Real missed opportunity not to circle back to Jonah and Amber’s financial issues, or Jonah’s anxiety, or Amber’s home life in any capacity when all those issues play into how their relationship has gone.
I know it was a gag but I didn’t like Amber having a set up chess board already there under the table.
We’ve seen eps before in S1 and S2 where Andi is off doing her own thing and the other kids are left to their own devices but I’ve never been a fan of those kinds of eps. It makes it feel like the other main kids exist on a separate show.
Looking Ahead:
Jonah scaring Andi is a callback to 2x14 and looks like Andi closing the laptop leads to her accidentally submitting her application to SAVA.
No clue if the bit in 3x17 about Amber wanting Jonah to write her a song is supposed to remind us of Jonah’s singing and set up You Girl but that’s coming up soon.
Buffy is on crutches and is going to coach from the bleachers which explains why they only filmed game scenes for part of one day.
Nice to see Kaitlin back and looks like we see her at the game and at school.
I know a lot of people think Kira shows up at the game to save the day but I don’t think we see her again until the finale. For one we have several days of TJ scenes and she’s not in them so clearly something has changed on his end. And Raquel was never shy about promoting her time on the show and she always made sure to post from set for eps 7, 13, 15, and 20. If she is in 3x18 then it would mean she deliberately didn’t post from set that week and updated her imdb but left that one ep out which is a level of deception and secrecy we’ve never seen from any of the recurring actors and really doesn’t seem to fit with her personality.
Not shocking that Tyrus isn’t in the promo, they don’t usually show the B plots in the next on promo, that was typically saved for the extended promos Disney used to air. They also didn’t show any of the Amber and Jonah C plot either.
I think next week will be a great ep and I’m looking forward to seeing what that Tyrus moment in the gym is, be it hand holding or a hug or something else.
This was the last ep to not be directed by either Paul Hoen or Michelle Manning. Something to Talk A-Boot was the last ep to feature the school or the spoon (before the re-shoots at least).
The timeline actually makes sense! 3x13 was around the end of October as costume day was a Halloween stand in and now it’s mid to late November with the SAVA application due at the end of November and the finale taking place not later than mid December in universe most likely.
And one last thing, because of the Fourth of July holiday in the USA the ratings for 3x17 won’t be out until Tuesday afternoon at the earliest rather than the usual Monday release date

My Top 10 Halloween Episodes
mysterylover123
Happy Halloween Everyone!
I’ve been rewatching my favorite shows’ Halloween episodes as a means to prepare for the holiday (and get ideas for things to do!) and I’ve decided to compile a list of my Top 10 favorites. These are the episodes I consider the best, the most packed with spooky goodness and Halloween surprises, of all the shows I’ve seen. Let me know if there’s one I should check out!
#10. The Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror V”
“NO TV AND NO BEER MAKE HOMER SOMETHING SOMETHING.” “GO CRAZY?” “DON’T MIND IF I DO!”
While I do wish Simpsons had stopped at Season 10 like most, I can still acknowledge its absolute mastery of the Halloween episode with this annual anthology. And like most, I can also concede that the best of the best, the creme-de-la-creme, is the 5th one: The Shinning parody of course, first and foremost, is absolutely classic and deservedly so. Having recently endured a week without power, and thus NO TV AND NO...NOT BEER BUT COFFEE...I totally get where Homer is coming from. The other two segments, and other Halloween eps, are also strong as well. But you can’t have a proper TOP 10 HALLOWEEN EPS list without a Treehouse of Horror. So here it is!
#9. Spectacular Spider-Man The Uncertainty Principle”
“Twas the night before Halloween, and no folks were stirring, not even Green Gob...lan.”
Spidey is one of the few superheroes with both the whimsical roster of characters and the appropriately spooky rogues gallery to make for great Halloween episodes. While Spider-Man and his amazing friends in 1981 started out with it’s own Goblin Halloween ep, my nod has to go to Spectacular’s ‘Uncertainty Principle’, a suitably creepy episode featuring all the stuff you want around this holiday. The cast in whacky costumes, spooky decor, and creepy plotlines about the Green Goblin and the arrival of the Symbiote. It’s even more horrifying in hindsight when you find out what’s really going on in the series finale...but for itself, it’s a suitably spooky time. Also, Spider-Man dressed as Spider-Man for Halloween.
#8. Angel “Life of the Party”
“Some are saying it’s an even better ritual sacrifice than the one last year.”
The absolute master of the Halloween episode is uncontrovertibly the Buffy-verse. I have 3 entries on this list alone, and it was hard to resist including a forth. But for now, let’s start out with Angel’s sole incursion into the Halloween genre, an Office Party ep from their 5th season. Spoiler alert: Season 5 is about Team Angel taking over Wolfram and Hart and trying to use it for good. The Halloween party there is a big deal and Lorne is going nuts from planning it. Consequently, we get a wild ride of demon guests, LorneHulk, Team Angel doing crazy things, and whacky Halloween decor. Spike smiling and partying out like a loon is definitely worth htetheprice of admission.
#7. Friends “The One w/ the Halloween Party”
“I am a woman who spent a ton of money on this dress and wants to wear it until she is too big to fit into it.”
I had actually never seen the Friends Halloween episode until this year. I definitely enjoyed it; the cast’s costumes are funny, the various Halloween antics are adorable - especially Rachel being pushed around by candy-randy kids - and the Halloween-y atmosphere is quite convivial. Though as a comic book nerd, I must point out how completely absurd Joey’s suggestion of ‘who would win, Catwoman or Supergirl’ being Catwoman. Like, seriously? A nonpowered thief vs a freaking Kryptonian? Even people who don’t read comic books should know the answer to that one! Were people in the year 2001 really that clueless? But anyway, on a more somber note, this was apparently the first one they shot after 9/11, and ended up Lisa Kudrow’s favorite, because a stranger thanked her for making them laugh. Aw!
#6. South Park “A Nightmare on Face Time”
“Oh, and Kenny? Stay gold.”
SP has a number of Halloween episodes, but my favorite has to be this one from 2014. There’s two main plotlines and they’re both Peak Halloweeny goodness. First, there’s Randy reenacting The Shining as his new Blockbuster video goes under due to Netflix stealing business, which is absolutely hilarious. Then there’s the boys as The Avengers, hoping to win a costume contest despite Stan having to FaceTime. This part is full of trick-or-treating goodness, with each of the costumes being perfect for the kid (WE HEAR KENNY’S VOICE! ALBEIT DISTORTED!) and the comedy of how seriously everyone takes Stan’s ipod battery dying being absolutely killer. Certainly wins the prize for Funniest Halloween Ep Ever. (Also, Kyle’s thor costume. Thor would obviously look so much cooler with that hat.)
#5. Buffy “Halloween”
“It’s come as you aren’t night!”
The second of the Buffyverse Halloween entries on the list. Not just a great Halloween ep but a great Buffy ep too, this one is absolutely rolling in seasonal riches. Pumpkin patch vamp fight! Halloween decorated Bronze! Ethan Rayne turning everyone into their costumes is such a clever gimmick, and as usual with a Buffy ep they do more with it than just that. Noblewoman!Buffy, Military!Xander and Ghost! Willow are each a treat to watch as they try something new with their lives. I’m a little annoyed by the “not like other girls” sappy Bangel ending, but otherwise, this one is just golden. (My shipper heart rejoices in the Cangel Bronze Date and Buffy being awfully flirty with Willow as well, for the record).
#4. Parks and Rec “Halloween Surprise”
“You can’t plan your future, Leslie. You just gotta let it happen.”
Parks and Rec is another one with a plethora of great Halloween eps to choose from (something about blonde female leads I guess). This one takes the spot for being the most substantial, plot-wise, of all four, including lots of changes in the story and a great lesson at the end - though also for having the best costumes (Rosie the riveter Leslie! Princess Diane), the best celebration (Screening of Death canoe 4 Murder at blood Lake sounds like an absolutely delightful way to spend a Halloween) and the best ending (BEN PROPOSES TO LESILE OMG). The only thing it’s missing is April, who only cameos at the start. But she gets plenty to do in the other Halloween eps, so I’ll forgive it.
#3. Frasier “Halloween”
“I’m Waldo. From Where’s Waldo. You know, the guy you can’t find because he blends into the crowd.” “I don’t know, but I’d love a demonstration.”
Frasier is absolute peak sitcom comedy, especially with the Farce plotline. This one is a great, sophisticated classic, with Niles throwing a Library association ball - which means everyone must dress as a character from literature. Niles is Cyrano, Martin is Holmes, Frasier and Daphne are from the Canterbury tales, and Roz is O from the Story of O. The real conflict of the ep is “Is Roz Pregnant” and everyone mistaking who’s pregnant by whom. The climax is Niles proposing to Daphne who he thinks is the one pregnant from an imaginary fling with Frasier. It’s funny, glib, and absolutely whacky, with some extra Halloween shenanigans to keep you occupied, like Niles’ weird old-timey theme and the parade of trick-or-treaters constantly interrupting the skits demanding candy. Definitely don’t miss this one!
#2. Gravity Falls “Summerween”
“We’re getting older, there’s not that many Halloweens left!’
There’s definitely something about supernatural shows and Halloween episodes that just creates that extra level of quality. GF is a great show all around, and this little gem of a Halloween ep is one of the best of the whole series. It’s got everything: The Summerween Trickster, the trick-or-treating, the try-hard scares and the mad dash for candy. My favorite thing about it, though, would have to be the conflict between Dipper and Mabel about what to do for Halloween. They were always debating whether it were better to grow up too soon or try to stay a kid, and this one uses Halloween to illustrate that: Dipper torn between the Grown Up party and the Kid Trick-or-Treating, and the poignant way that rings true for all of us here in the US - that day when you finally realize you’re ‘too old’ for trick-or-treating - really makes this one strong.
Hon Mentions: The other Parks and Rec episodes; Buffy All the Way; the camptastic Smallville episode “Thirst”, the How I met Your Mother Halloweens
#1. Buffy “Fear Itself”
“Don’t taunt the fear demon!” “Why, can he hurt me?” “No, it’s just tacky.”
Like I said before, no one does Halloween like Buffy does Halloween. And this one is the best of the best, of the best. Everything you could want from a Halloween ep is right here. Pumpkin carving, check. Crazy party, check. Whacky costumes, check. Spooky real scares, check. The Gang’s costumes are a parade of awesome (ANYA AS BUNNY!) and the concept of exploring each member’s Greatest Fear is an absolute winner. I love every time a TV show tries to do a Greatest Fears episode, because it’s just a concept I get a kick out of - such a great way to explore our characters’ most primal needs! - and this is b y far the best. The atmosphere, the subject matter, the costumes, and the writing, which is seriously killer in this episode (”Prepare to have your spines tingled and your gooses bumped by the terrifying...Fantasia.” “Maybe it’s because of all the horrificthings we’ve seen, but hippos wearing tutus just don’t unnerve me the way they used to”) all make this, in my opinion the best Halloween ep of all time.

ANGEL: It wasn't a social call. I was there to protect her. I stayed out of sight. She didn't even know I was there. CORDY: Really? (ANGEL nods) CORDY: So, you avoided her. ANGEL: Look, Buffy will always be a part of me, and that's never going to change. But, she's human and I'm…not. And, that's also never going to change. We said our good-byes; no need to stir any of this up again. CORDY: You don't want to 'stir,' but if my ex came to town and was all stalking me in the shadows and then left and then didn't even say 'hello' I'd be-- BUFFY (from behind them): A little upset. (ANGEL turns to look at her, his mouth dropping open) BUFFY (looking ANGEL in the eyes): Wouldn’t you?

Authors' given ratings usually trusted, but "general audiences" and "K" or "K+" are increased to "FRT" because of original BtVS/AtS series' ratings.
