The Best Don’t Go As Planned
Written for Day 4 of @buddietinesweek. Also on AO3.
“Damn it,” Eddie grumbled as his hands hit the steering wheel impatiently.  He was stuck in late afternoon traffic on Valentine’s Day.  He had left the station at 4:30, in his suit, ring tucked away in his pocket.  He was going to run by the house to pick up his boys, and then head to the restaurant, all three of them.  He glanced at the clock that read “5:32 pm” in glaring red numbers.  He was supposed to be at the restaurant right now with his family, not sitting in traffic.
Just then, Eddie’s cell phone rang.  He hit the phone button on his steering wheel and sighed.  “Hey babe,” he said, dejectedly.
“You okay?” Buck asked.  “Thought we’d all be there by now.”
“I’m stuck in this stupid traffic.  It’s terrible.  We can’t be moving faster than 15 miles an hour.  I left the station an hour ago, and I could put the truck in park now and walk back there in 10 minutes.”
“Want me to call the restaurant to see if they have a later reservation open?”
“I doubt they do.  It’s Valentines.”
“I’ll at least call them to let them know we won’t be there.”
Traffic was at a standstill once again.  Eddie rested his head on the steering wheel for a moment.  “I’m so sorry.”
Buck chuckled softly.  “Babe, you didn’t cause what looks like a multiple-vehicle pile up from what the news is showing.”
“This wasn’t how this night was supposed to go,” Eddie admitted.  “It was supposed to be perfect.  There are so many things I wanted to go right tonight, Buck.”
“Eddie, I’ll still make sure it ends perfectly.  From what I can see, they’re opening the left two lanes.  Maybe traffic will start moving soon.”
Eddie lifted his head up to check to make sure he was already in one of the left lanes.  “I certainly hope so.”
“I’m going to hang up now so I can get a few things done.  I’ll see you when you get home.”
“I love you,” Eddie said, thumb reaching for the button to hang up.
“Love you, too.”
An hour later, Eddie was finally walking up the sidewalk and into his house.  However, instead of the normal decor, his house was decorated with balloons and rose petals.  Eddie heard the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen.  He entered the room as was immediately greeted by the smell of Italian food wafting through the air.  He looked over to see his boyfriend and son, still dressed in their suits that they were going to wear to the restaurant.
“Daddy!” Christopher exclaimed before carefully making his way over to Eddie since he had left his crutches in his room.
“Hey mijo,” Eddie said, wrapping his arms around his son.  “What’s all this?”
“Buck said we were having Valentines here.  We walked to the store down the street and bought all this stuff.”
Buck crossed the room to greet Eddie with brief kiss.  “We sure did!  We bought the balloons, the flowers, and the ingredients for chicken parmesan.  Happy Valentines Day, babe.”
Eddie smiled at the man standing next to him.  “Happy Valentines Day.”
“Christopher, why don’t you go set the table?” Buck said.  As soon as Christopher was out of the kitchen, Buck turned to look Eddie in the eyes.  “I know it’s not what you had planned, but just so you know, I’m still going to say yes whether we’re in some fancy restaurant in downtown or if we’re sitting at our dining room table.”
Eddie groaned.  “You knew?  How on earth did you know?”
Buck laughed.  “We share a dresser, a closet, hell sometimes we share a bag when we both have a shift at the same time.  You really didn’t think I’d see the box?”
“I thought I had it pretty well hidden!”
“Nope, pretty well hidden would be where I’ve hidden your ring,” Buck revealed.
Eddie blinked his eyes at Buck in stunned silence.  “You were…  Wait…  What?  You’re planning a proposal?”
Buck didn’t say a word, but walked out of the room and into Christopher’s bedroom.  He opened the young boy’s closet and reached towards the back of the top shelf.  He slipped the item into his jacket pocket before returning back to the kitchen.  “Just know, I’ve got one for you too.”
“You little sneak,” Eddie laughed.  “Let’s at least enjoy this first,” he said pointing to the food.  “It smells amazing.”
Half an hour later, the small family was still sitting at the table, chatting about their days.  Eddie looked over at Buck and smiled.  “Buck,” he said, getting the younger man’s attention.
“Hmm?” Buck said, looking from Christopher to his boyfriend.
Suddenly, Eddie’s mind went blank.  Everything he had thought about saying in this moment, he completely forgot.  “I… um…  I swear I had a speech planned out.”
Buck chuckled.  “Just ask me, Eddie.  I don’t need a speech.”
Eddie moved from his chair and knelt on the floor in front of Buck.  “Evan Buckley, will you marry me?”  He pulled the box out of his pocket and held it in front of him.
Instead of answering right away, Buck reached in his pocket and knelt as well.  “Only if you agree to marry me, too.”

Filled Prompt for Day 2 of Buddie’s Valentine’s Week! @buddietinesweek
“You are the worst”
“Babe! That might just be the least romantic thing you have ever said to me and its Valentine’s Day!”  Buck’s pout made the corner of his mouth move up slightly, not enough however to disappear the death stare he was giving to his boyfriend. He was really cute, he had to admit that, but the situation was getting out of control.
When they were told there was a cookies competition at Christopher’s school for Valentine’s Day, the three of them had been excited and already making plans, but that had lasted very little when the teacher told the, bright smile on her face, how Christopher always got super proud saying that his Buck was the best cooker ever.
After that, it was just a competition. It was just his luck that the other parent beside them at the competition seemed to think the exact same thing.
“You and Matt’s dad need to stop”
“But I didn’t do anything!”
“Saying ‘I bet I can lift you with one arm’ can be considered provocation”
“I’m right though!”
The fact that he had a point was not going to change the part where it wasn’t the place or the time. And seeing Matt’s wife scolding him made him think that he wasn’t the only one who noticed it.
“Quit it”
“Eddie, I have a reputation to maintain”
“Buck!” Another voice made Eddie close his eyes, already feeling his smile grew bigger because this was honestly so out of hand. Bobby appeared on his right side, game face on.
“Remember what we talked about in the decoration, keep it simple but clean”
Buck’s face went completely serious, nodding along the captain’s words. “Got it, Bobby”
“Stop encouraging him” How has Bobby even got free the same day they did? Eddie was about to ask that when his attention was brought to Christopher.
“Dad!” He followed the direction of his son’s eyes, confused because they were not on him, they were… On Buck. Oh. “The cookies!” There was no mistaking that the kid was talking to Buck directly, not Eddie and fuck, that made his heart way too big for his chest.
Seeing that his boyfriend didn’t move, or breath for the matter, Eddie pressed a reassuring hand on his back, trying to ground him. “Yeah dad, the cookies” It took another moment for Buck to nod and move over there, scooping Christopher in hug that made him laugh.
No one commented in the way Buck cleaned his eyes with the back of his hand.
A little sniff made Eddie turn around, seeing Bobby taking a picture with his phone “Oh Bobby, did you cry too when Buck call you dad for the first time?”
“Eddie, shut up”

Buddietines Day 3💕
Chris was being quiet. Maybe too quiet and Eddie could tell he had something on his mind.
“What’s wrong mijo?”
“If Denny has two moms does that mean some people have two dads?” Chris asked.
“Yep.” Eddie smiled.
“So like if you got married I’d have 2 parents.” Chris asked.
“Yes, but buddy I’d need to start dating someone first.” Eddie laughed.
“What about Buck?” Chris giggled.
“Um buddy Buck is my friend.” Eddie blushed.
“Isn’t that good?”
“Well yeah friendship is important when you date someone.”
“Then what’s the problem?” Chris asked.
Someone knocked at the door saving Eddie from trying to explain this. But it was Buck and Chris didn’t seem like he would drop this anytime soon.
“Hey buddy!” Buck grinned.
“Do you wanna be my other dad?”
“What?” Buck choked
“Well dad said some people have two dads so can’t you be be my other dad?”
Eddie was so embarrassed hoping Buck didn’t think that Eddie had prompted Chris to say this.
“Um.” Buck gulped. “Me and your dad are friends.”
“Friends.” Buck hated how it felt using this word although what was he supposed to say. He couldn’t say how he really felt. Friends just didn’t cover exactly the kind of relationship they share.
“Do you like my dad?” Chris asked.
“Yeah?” Buck said almost making it sound like a question.
“Dad do you like Buck?”
“Of course I do we’re friends.” Eddie laughed nervously.
“Ok then why don’t you date?” Chris crossed his arms.
“Buddy let’s just drop this and play video games.” Eddie said.
“Fine.” Chris rolled his eyes.
After Chris went to bed things were a little awkward.
“I’m sorry Buck.” Eddie sighed.
“No I’m sorry if I gave the wrong impression to Chris. You’re his father I probably overstepped.” Buck frowned.
“It’s probably me. I can’t help it even when you aren’t here I can’t seem to stop talking about you. If I’m being completely honest a date with you sounds kind of perfect.” Eddie blushed.
“Wait...you wanna go on a date with me?” Buck grinned.
“I mean yeah if you want to.” Eddie said.
“Yes I want to. I’ve wanted to for awhile now but I didn’t know how you felt. To be honest I didn’t even know if you liked guys.” Buck laughed.
“Wow really?I thought it was obvious especially after that little conversation in your kitchen.” Eddie grinned. “This is pathetic my 8 year old played matchmaker for us.” Eddie said erupting in laughter.
“Obviously we needed help. I don’t think I would of made the first move.” Buck laughed.

Somebody To Love (one-shot)
Summary: Blind Date - Buddietines Week Day 6
In which Maddie sets Buck up on a blind date on Valentine’s Day and Buck only accepts because he’s trying to get over his crush on Eddie.
And then...he sees who his blind date is.
Ship: Buck/Eddie
Rating: M (smut)
Words: 3,306
Notes: This was not supposed to get smutty...but then it did and I have no regrets. Enjoy.
Title obviously after the Queen song (mostly because I couldn’t think of anything else).
Read on Ao3
---
“You set me up on a blind date,” Buck said. “Seriously? And what is that supposed to do for me? Mads, that’s the last thing I need or want.”
His sister wagged her finger at him but she was grinning in that mischievous way that told Buck that she was up to something and that whatever it was, it just wasn’t going to be good for him.
“Look,” Maddie said, “I’m tired of hearing you complain about your crush on Eddie all the time. And since you’re convinced that he won’t feel the same way then the only way forward is for you to move on with someone else. Buck...I just want you to be happy.”
Buck sighed. They were in Maddie’s apartment and Buck had sort of whined a bit about how hopeless his crush was. Eddie had to be straight, after all. He had a son and he’d never spoken about liking men and Buck knew his luck and his taste in men. They nearly always turned out to be straight and unattainable.
“Okay, so if I let you do this and it doesn’t work out then you get off my back?”
Maddie rolled her eyes. “Yeah...alright,” she said. “But I have a feeling that you’re going to like who I choose.”
“Not likely,” Buck said.
Maddie didn’t bring the blind date up again for a few days and then on the night before Valentine’s Day, Buck received a text.
Your date is tomorrow. Wear that new shirt you bought the other day. And have fun.
Buck just sort of groaned at his phone and shrugged at Eddie when he looked at him questioningly. Chim just sort of laughed at him and nudged Hen which meant that Maddie had definitely told Chim about the blind date and he had of course shared with Hen.
It was no matter...they would probably all discuss it over dinner or whatever on the shift after Valentine’s Day and his date. That’s how things went at the 118, after all. There were rarely any secrets. Buck was actually a bit surprised that he’d done so well with keeping his crush from everyone. At least, he hoped he had.
He texted Maddie back.
You just had to pick Valentine’s Day didn’t you...
Even though he wasn’t thrilled about the date, Buck figured that it was worth a try. He needed to make himself move on from his crush and if that meant going on a blind date that his sister set up, then that’s what it was going to entail.
Maddie sent him the details on where the date was taking place. The reservation was under her name and she expected Buck to be there on time.
Despite not being thrilled about the date, Buck still took the time to get ready. He took Maddie’s advice and put on the new shirt, it was button up, short sleeved, and maroon. Buck actually hadn’t been too into it when he saw it but Maddie convinced him to get it. He paired it with his favorite jeans. As he got ready, he couldn’t help but think about the last Valentine’s date he’d had. With Abby. That had been a mess and a half, he only hoped that the person Maddie had set him up with could help him out if he choked again...or better yet that there was no medical emergency at all.
He arrived at the restaurant right on time. It was busy, but then it was Valentine’s Day. Buck actually ended up waiting in line to get to the host and as he did he took a glance around to try and see if he could find the person that he was supposed to be on a date with but around him were only couples.
“Hi, can I help you?”
Buck nodded. “Uh, yeah. Reservation for Maddie Buckley. My sister set up this blind date for me…”
The host smiled at him. “Yes, your date is actually already here.” She motioned for one of the waiters. “Table twelve.”
Buck gulped but he followed the waiter. He had to just hope for the best. If the date went well then it went well and if it went horribly then that’s what happened. Either way, it was one night and a few hours and Buck literally had nothing left to lose. Not even his heart. That kind of already belonged to someone else.
“Here we are,” the waiter said. “And I will be right back. Enjoy your night.”
The waiter stepped out of Buck’s way. His date was facing the other way and Buck had a moment to see him because it was definitely a guy. He was nervous, going by the way that his hand kept twitching on the table and it was clear that Maddie had gone through the trouble of finding someone that at least from the back looked a bit like Eddie. She knew what Buck liked. Buck didn’t know if that would be easier or harder.
Taking a deep breath, Buck stepped forward.
“Hi, I—” he had no words and his jaw could have been touching the ground for all he knew because this was not what he’d expected…it was not who he expected at all.
“Buck,” Eddie said. “What are you doing here?”
“I — Maddie set me up on a blind date,” Buck said and he realized that he was in the way when a waiter tried to get past him so he slid into the seat across from Eddie.
Eddie had sat up in the chair and he was leaning forward. “Chim set me up on a blind date,” he said. He was staring at Buck in wonder.
Buck burst out into laughter and he was sure the people at the tables around them were turning to look at them but he couldn’t help it because it had been a set up. Maddie knew how Buck felt and she’d made this happen as some sort of push to get Buck to admit his feelings and Eddie had been pulled along into the middle of it.
“So...I guess the good thing about this is that we’re not on awkward dates with randoms,” Buck said. “Spending tonight with your best friend...not a bad way to go.”
Eddie sat back in his chair and his lips were pursed. “Buck...I think we have to be real here. Or maybe I do...I have to come clean. Tengo que decirte esto porque si no lo digo...me voy acer loco.”
[I have to tell you this because if I don’t say it...I’m going to go crazy]
“Eddie...I don’t speak Spanish,” Buck said. “But I know what loco means.”
Eddie sort of hung his head and when he looked back up he just sort of shook his head when he looked at Buck but before he could say anything the waiter was back.
“Hello,” he said, “can I get you started on anything?”
“Just water for now, thanks,” Buck said.
The waiter nodded and walked away.
“So,” Buck said. He was nervous to ask.
Eddie took a breath and Buck was reassured by how nervous Eddie looked as well. It made him...well, it made him wonder if he’d been wrong. If maybe Maddie had a point and he should have told Eddie. He was just gathering the guts to tell him when Eddie spoke first.
“I — I like you, Buck. That seems so...juvenile. I don’t know...I’m kind of in love with you. That might be better. And true.”
Buck had no words. There were no words that could describe what he felt. It was lucky the table between them wasn’t that big because Buck leaned over it easily, one hand on the table for balance and the other on Eddie’s shirt, dragging him up so that he could kiss him, slotting their lips together and trying to shove every single emotion at him. All the love he felt for this man...for his best friend. His best friend who loved him back and was kissing back.
Eddie let out the cutest little whine when Buck pulled back and he moved with Buck, chasing his lips. Eddie’s hands found their way to Buck’s jaw, his fingers brushing over Buck’s cheek and Eddie kissed him. This one was gentler, slower and lingering.
They both sat down, but their hands met across the table, the need to have contact and to touch imperative.
“So...we could have been doing that all this time,” Eddie said a tad breathless.
“Yeah. I guess we’re both a little bit clueless.”
“Or too stuck in our own heads,” Eddie said.
Buck squeezed Eddie’s hand. “I didn’t want to lose you. Our friendship. And...well, I had no idea you liked men too.”
Eddie chuckled. “I — I’ve never really been with a man before.” He looked nervous admitting that, Buck could tell.
“Well...you know my past…”
“I do,” Eddie said. “And you know mine.”
Buck couldn’t help but smile wide. “So we’re doing this…”
Eddie nodded. He was smiling too and it was all teeth, eyes shinning. Buck just loved him so much. And it was the easiest thing in the world to love that man.
“Well, since we’re here now...I guess this makes it our first date. On Valentine’s Day.”
“What could you possibly have against this day?” Eddie asked.
Buck shrugged. “Nothing really...just I don’t like the cliche that we got together on Valentine’s Day. You know?”
Eddie laughed. “Would you prefer a different day?”
“Maybe.”
Eddie just laughed again. “Is this because Maddie and Chim now get to claim they got us together? Because, to be honest, they kinda did.”
“But they’ll be so smug,” Buck said.
Eddie shook his head and he leaned it onto his free hand just so, staring at Buck and Buck could see nothing but fondness in his gaze. Fondness for Buck.
“I love you. You love me. I think in the end we win.”
Buck nodded and he wanted to just lean over again and kiss him because he’d been wanting to do that and so much more for longer than he could possibly pin down. Eddie was just delectable...his abs alone had caught Buck’s attention but there was just a lot more to him than that and knowing all of that, it made Buck want him even more.
“But, that doesn’t mean we can’t mess with them a little,” Eddie said.
And that was why he was his best friend. “They would deserve it. But that’s plans for another day. Tonight...it’s about us.”
Eddie reached out and with his free hand, he touched Buck’s cheek. Buck leaned into the touch and Eddie chuckled as his thumb swept over Buck’s lower lip.
“And come to think of it, I don’t think we need to do this whole dinner thing,” Buck said. “You have to get back for Chris tonight right? Well, I’m not really hungry...but I would be down for something else during the time we have?” He raised an eyebrow at Eddie and hoped that he wasn’t pressing his luck.
Eddie’s eyes narrowed on him and Eddie bit down on his lower lip, eyes never leaving Buck.
“Good idea?” Buck asked.
Eddie stood up, never letting go of Buck’s hand. “Let’s go,” he said and it was Eddie that pulled him through the restaurant out to the exit.
They’d both come in their own cars and leaving one behind wasn’t an option.
“Meet me at mine?” Buck asked as they walked towards the parking lot.
Eddie nodded but he didn’t let go of Buck’s hand when they’d reached his truck. Instead, he pulled Buck closer and next thing he knew, Buck was pressed against the side of the truck and Eddie was stepping into his space. Their eyes were locked together and then Eddie was kissing him hard and fast and sloppy. Desperate. Buck pressed his body even closer to him, pulling Eddie in by the waist.
Buck was surprised when Eddie pulled back, stepped back from Buck entirely. His lips were red, his hair just slightly mussed and his eyes looked wild like at any moment he would just pounce on Buck. But he didn’t. Instead, he reached for Buck’s hand and he pulled Buck off the truck.
“Just a preview,” Eddie whispered. “Go. I’ll see you in a bit.”
Buck had no genuine idea about how he managed to get back to his apartment because he was in a daze. An Eddie induced daze.
Eddie got there not long after he did and they walked without touching at all to his apartment. It was when the door closed that they grabbed for each other, falling into hard and messy kisses that were part teeth and just a bit off center. Their chests were pressed together and Buck wanted to be touching all of Eddie. He wanted to see all of him. He wanted to know him and be known back.
It was stumbling that they made it up the stairs, struggling to try and take each other’s clothes off and knocking into each other and the railing of the stairs as they went. But Eddie managed to open Buck’s shirt and immediately his hands were on his skin warm and with lightly callused fingers and Eddie was trailing his mouth away from his mouth down his jaw and neck. Buck held on to any part of Eddie that he could reach, fingers digging into his shoulders and side because it was too much. Having Eddie was too much.
Somehow they were moving towards his bed. Eddie pushed him to sit and Buck could only watch as Eddie stripped himself of his shirt, throwing it aside. He took off his shoes too and then his hands were on Buck’s neck, tilting his head up. Eddie leaned down and kissed him, a quick brush of their lips before he pushed Buck to the bed. Buck scrambled back, moving towards the headboard and Eddie followed.
Buck shivered when Eddie’s hands landed on Buck’s torso, running up his chest to his shoulders. Eddie kept eye contact right up until he leaned down and he was trailing kisses up Buck’s chest. Buck had to throw his head back onto his pillow, whimpering as Eddie came up his neck, his knees were bracing him on either side of Buck’s hips and Eddie’s teeth nipped at Buck’s neck.
“Eddie,” Buck gasped. He reached for him, hands landing on Eddie’s sides, his warm skin was almost like silk to the touch and he heard Eddie gasp as Buck’s hands explored.
They were kissing again a moment later and their chests were pressed together but more importantly so was everything else and Buck could feel Eddie against him. They were both hard and confined in jeans and if Buck wasn’t comfortable then neither was Eddie but Buck couldn’t be the one to push even if he was sure that Eddie wanted it. Eddie had never done this with a man before…
When the kiss ended and they were gasping for breath, Buck rolled them over. He supported his weight over Eddie with his hands on either side of Eddie’s face and looking at him made him lose his breath. He was a beautiful gorgeous man and Buck had him in his bed.
“Buck? What is it?”
Buck brushed a piece of Eddie’s hair off his forehead.
“You’ve never done this before...with a guy, I mean…”
“I haven’t,” Eddie said and there was something bashful about him when he said it but then their eyes were meeting. “Buck, I want everything with you.”
Buck smiled down at him. “But we can take it slow, you know. We have a long time to do everything.”
Eddie pulled him down into another round of kissing and it was Eddie that reached down between them and undid Buck’s pants and then started pulling them off. Buck had to sit up and get up from the bed to take them off completely and in the meanwhile, Eddie worked on his own and seeing him splayed out on his bed in just his boxers with a hard on tenting said boxers and his abs and legs in full display. It was as if he had walked inside his own dreams.
“God, you’re hot,” Buck muttered as he climbed back on the bed and Eddie was pulling him towards him and then they were kissing again, pressed up together as much as was possible. Buck groaned when their covered erections brushed and Eddie gasped into his mouth and Buck never wanted to forget the way that Eddie sounded when he whined and gasped and tried to hold on to a moan.
Buck reached between them and he was slow and deliberate as his hand played with the waistband of Eddie’s boxers until Eddie had had enough and he shimmied out of them on his own and Buck barely hesitated before his hand was on Eddie’s cock.
“Buck,” Eddie groaned, voice guttural and unbelievably hot.
Eddie whined when Buck began to move his hand, he was bucking up into it and he threw his head back, the line of his throat glorious and long interrupted only by his adam’s apple when he was gulping and taking in air.
All of it, the emotion and the Eddie of it all was everything. Buck’s hand kept moving on Eddie’s cock and then he moved his body down Eddie’s glistening chest. Eddie was watching him and Buck just shot him a smirk when he’d made it down between his legs. He leaned forward and licked a stripe from tip to bottom.
Eddie was whimpering through his moans but one of his hands was gripping Buck’s shoulder tight, nails digging in just as Buck took the head of Eddie’s cock in his mouth and he groaned against it because this only happened in his dreams.
“Buck, oh—” Eddie’s gasps were interrupted and loud and soft.
Buck wanted to keep hearing him as he took more of Eddie in his mouth, losing himself to his senses, the way that Eddie smelled and tasted and felt against his tongue and how Buck knew when Eddie was just about to come from the way he twitched, but he stayed where he was anyway because he didn’t want even a drop to go to waste. It was all of it, the way that Eddie was looking at him and the feeling of him going soft in Buck’s mouth, spent and happily so...it made everything perfect and when Eddie had recovered enough he was urging Buck to take off his underwear, Buck felt like he wouldn’t be holding on for much longer. And it didn’t take much more than Eddie’s touch and his hands fondling him in an almost reverent way for Buck to feel his orgasm hit.
They collapsed side by side on Buck’s bed, sweaty and worn out but touching still where they could despite how sticky they felt and how Buck’s cum was starting to dry on his stomach and thighs and where it had landed on Eddie.
“Wow,” Eddie said, panting and laughing just a little.
“Okay,” Buck said, “so this may just have been the best Valentine’s Day ever,” Buck said.
“You can say that again,” Eddie said.
“But Chim and Maddie are definitely not off the hook,” Buck added, leaning over to kiss Eddie what was just more than a peck, Eddie chuckled against his lips and Buck laughed too and then they were kissing again and Buck could hardly believe his luck as he lost himself to the sensation of Eddie and how he was surrounded by him. Loved by him. In love with him.

The Words
The week of Valentine's Day Buck goes home to find a box full of letters in his mailbox. As he reads them, he finds that they are love letters. He enlists the help of the one-eighteen to help him discover the identity of the secret admirer.
Prompt Fill for the Tumblr prompt 'Secret Admirer' for Buddietines week
A huge thank you to the beta for this, nilkshi. Your hard work is so appreciated, and thank you for helping with the title!
**
Eddie stepped into the dining room, setting down a plate of mandarin oranges and grapes. “Here’s your snack, bud. Did you finish your spelling words?” He asked, seating himself in the chair directly across from his son.
A giggle escaped from Christopher’s lips. “Dad, Carla and I finished my spelling words last night.”
Eddie felt his brows knit together as he glanced at Christopher, who had been working at the dining room table for no less than thirty minutes. “So, what are you working on then?” Eddie grabbed a grape from the plate, popping into his mouth.
A sigh escaped the little boy’s lips, setting down his pencil and he looked to Eddie with a serious look on his face. “Do you know what next week is?”
“Uh…” Eddie tapped his fingers against the tabletop in thought. Eddie pulled out his cell phone, glancing at the calendar. “I’m not sure, Chris.”
Chris set his hand carefully on top of Eddie’s before he looked him square in the eyes. “It’s Valentine’s Day, Dad.”
Wow. He was really, really bad at this. Surely a better parent would have had it circled on the calendar. Eddie couldn’t stop the small laugh that had bubbled past his lips. “You are completely right. I totally forgot, mijo. Are you supposed to bring something for class?”
“It’s okay, we all have bad days sometimes,” Christopher replied brightly. “I have to bring in valentines for the other kids, and a decorated mailbox for the cards.”
“Hmm,” Eddie pondered briefly before realization flashed in his eyes, “well I do have your craft bin up in my closet if you wanted to try to decorate a cereal box for your mailbox?”
Chris looked up from the hearts that he was drawing on the paper in front of him. “Oh, mine is going to be the best!” He announced eagerly, setting the crayon down on the table. Chris began to get up from the table, grabbing his crutches when he was upright. “You find a cereal box, and I’ll get the supplies.”
“You sure you don’t need help?”
“I’m not five,” Chris reminded him with a sigh. Eddie let out a small laugh, holding his hands up in surrender. His boy was nothing if not utterly determined, and he was growing more and more independent by the day. It made Eddie so proud, and at the same time, he missed the little boy who used to be solely dependent on him. Eddie made his way to the counter to find a cereal box, listening to the fading sound of crutches as Christopher disappeared into Eddie’s room.
**
Buck glided into the firehouse with an extra bounce in his step. Eddie looked up from his locker, a genuine smile pulling at the corner of his lips. He looked back to his locker, eyes lingering on the Valentine’s Day card that Christopher had made for him over the weekend. “Well, looks like cupid must have something up his sleeve for you this week,” Eddie teased.
“I’ll have you know that I do finally have plans,” Buck told him, pulling the shirt up and over his head, turning his body so that he could glance at his best friend. “I was pretty sure I was going to be dateless this year, which isn’t necessarily a bad idea considering my track record with Valentine’s Day.”
Eddie made a move to close his locker, but Buck stepped closer, stopping him. “Did Chris make that?” He asked, an enamored smile splitting his handsome features. “I don’t know where that kid gets his artistic talent, but clearly it’s not from his dad.”
“Thanks man,” Eddie rolled his eyes, “Shannon was definitely way more artistic than I’ll ever be.” He cleared his throat then, a sad attempt at changing the subject before he got trapped into a conversation about feelings. “So, what are Valentine's Day plans?”
“Trying to live vicariously through me?” Buck teased, looking up briefly to meet Eddie’s hazel eyes as he carefully buttoned the top to his uniform.
“No, I think I manage just fine on my own.”
“You think so?” He challenged, his brow arching at the question, “When was the last time that you went on a date?”
“I-I don’t know,” Eddie answered with a sigh, hating to have to admit to his best friend that his love life was essentially extinct.
“There’s no reason for that, it’s not like you couldn’t get a date if you actually put some effort into it.” Buck set the rest of his belongings in his locker before he leaned against it, arms crossing over his chest as he leaned against his locker, “Let me help you.”
Eddie raked his fingers through his hair uncomfortably, “I appreciate the offer, Buck, I do. But I don’t have the time-”
“I’ve got you, man. I just need a decent picture of you and then I’ll do the rest.”
**
“So we all know that Cap is a big lover when it comes to Valentine’s Day,” Hen let out a light laugh before she took a sip of her beer, the crew unwinding after a long shift. “Anyone else have plans?”
Eddie was thankful that Buck hadn’t arrived at the bar yet to bring up Eddie’s lack of a love life. Or to ask for another picture to use for a dating profile. He took a long pull from his beer, waiting for everyone else to pipe in. “I’m taking Maddie out for a nice dinner on Friday night, then a quiet evening at home.” Chimney said.
“Solid plan,” Bobby acknowledged. “Michael has Harry this weekend, so I’m surprising Athena with a weekend away…” His eyes slid to Hen’s knowingly, “just to reiterate, I said surprise.”
Hen laughed heartily at the emphasis, “I’m wounded that you think I would ruin a surprise.”
Bobby smirked, taking a sip of his water. “Did you forget about her birthday last year, already?” Hen pursed her lips together tightly, her brows rising. “I’ll take that as a no.” He and Hen laughed in unison.
Eddie was about to speak up when he noticed a tall blond making his way into the bar. He forced a swallow as his eyes lingered, on the blond getting a drink at the bar. “Did we lose you, Eddie?” Chim teased.
“Huh? Uh, no,” Eddie pulled his eyes away to glance at Chim with a tight smile. He lifted his beer before nodding his head towards the bar. “Buck made it.”
“Ohhh, alright.” Chim trailed off, exchanging a knowing glance with Hen as Buck made his way over to the group.
“Hey guys,” Buck greeted as he slipped into the empty barstool at the table.
“We were just talking about everyone’s Valentine’s Day plans,” Bobby told him, watching as Buck brought his beer to his lips in a fluid motion. “You have any plans?”
“Yeah, I mean, I did…” Buck trailed off slowly, his mind seemingly elsewhere. “Have any of you ever had a secret admirer?” He asked carefully.
“Uh, yeah, in the sixth grade,” Hen joked.
Buck pursed his lips together in thought, before placing his beer down on the table. “I stopped home after our shift… and found these letters in my mailbox.”
“Letters?” Eddie asked, with obvious interest.
“Love letters?” Bobby suggested although he wasn’t sure if the suggestion was because Valentine’s Day was around the corner. He was a sucker for Valentine’s Day romance.
Buck nodded his head. “I’ve never received a love letter before.” He let out a small laugh, his mind flashing back to the words that he’d read only a short while earlier. “I- have no idea who would have sent these.”
“Maybe your date for Valentine’s Day?” Eddie suggested.
“No,” Buck shook his head, taking another long swallow from his beer, “we haven’t actually been out before.” He explained carefully.
Chim howled with laughter, “Hold up a second, you are spending your Valentine’s Day reverting back to Buck 1.0 and hooking up with someone from Tinder?”
“After reading those letters, I don’t know what I want to do.”
“You really don’t have any idea who they could be from? Any clues?” Hen asked, her interested piqued.
Buck shook his head again, “I honestly have no idea.” He shifted in the barstool, fingers slipping into his back pocket. “I brought one of them with me.”
“Oh, we have got to figure this out so you can go out with your secret admirer for Valentine’s Day. How romantic would that be?” Hen and Bobby looked at each other excitedly, holding their hands out for the letter.
Eddie felt like the wind had been knocked out of him, seeing the familiar scrawl across the envelope. This was impossible. He felt on the edge of suffocating, swallowing the second half of his beer in several greedy gulps. His hazel eyes flashed, and he thought of the box which was safely tucked away in his closet only days ago. Next to Christopher’s art bin. Fuck.
“I’ll be right back,” Eddie choked out as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. He flashed a smile before he stepped away from the group. Eddie slipped out the back door of the bar, leaning against the hard wall behind him. He ran his hands roughly over his face. “Think, Eddie, think. How the fuck did this happen?”
His eyes closed as he tried to calm his racing heart, the panic at having his intimate feelings for Buck shared with the rest of their team. Which letter were they reading? Did he have all of them? Bobby, Hen, Chim, and Buck were sitting inside of the bar trying to answer one question: who was Buck’s secret admirer? And the man who had written those letters stood outside, trying to answer a thousand more.
**
He’d ducked out early after that.
The next morning, hearing the doorbell, Eddie made his way to the front door, setting a basket of folded laundry on top of the table before pulling the door open. “Cap, is everything okay?” he asked in surprise.
Bobby smiled back at him. “Having a sick kid is never easy, I brought soup.” Eddie felt his jaw fall open and had to snap it shut quickly to recover.
“Bobby, I appreciate it, but you didn’t need to…” His voice trailed off slightly, as he stood with his hand gripping the door tightly. He had very gracelessly slipped out of the bar the night before, telling everyone that Chris was sick. The last thing that he needed was someone showing up concerned about his perfectly healthy kid.
“I wanted to,” Bobby assured him, standing outside of the home with a tupperware dish in his hands. “So, are you going to invite me in or what?”
“Uh, of course,” Eddie pulled the door open wider, stepping aside so that Bobby could walk through the doorway and into his home. He fought back the desire to throw his head back and groan as he closed the door behind him.
Bobby’s eye caught sight of the mess on the living room floor as they stepped past, legos and dinosaurs scattered across nearly every inch. His eyes landed on Chris finally, who sat on the floor playing with a few dinosaurs, noisily knocking over a lego structure. “Can I get you anything, Cap?” Eddie asked before Bobby finally followed behind him, into the kitchen.
Bobby made his way to the refrigerator, slipping the container inside.  “An explanation?”
Eddie felt his heart begin to thunder in his chest, and he busied himself with grabbing a few glasses out of the cupboard. “An explanation for what?” He asked, managing to keep an even tone.
Bobby grabbed the pitcher of water, joining Eddie at the counter. “For why you left the bar so quickly last night.” He glanced away from Eddie as he filled the two glasses, returning the pitcher to the fridge.
“I told you last night, Chris-”
“I know what you told everyone last night.” Bobby tilted his head towards the living room. “But that kid out there is not sick.”
“He was having a rough night.” Eddie grabbed one of the glasses in his hand roughly, taking several long swallows.
“He was?”
Eddie sighed loudly, putting his glass down noisily on the table before turning to Bobby. “Are you trying to ask me something?”
Bobby shrugged his shoulders before he sat down at the table with his glass of water. “You missed all of them speculating on who Buck’s secret admirer was when you left last night.”
Eddie scoffed before he sat down in the chair across from Bobby. “So who have you narrowed it down to?”
“Well, they decided that it’s definitely a guy based on the chicken scratch. They had a pretty generous list: the mailman, the Postmates driver that always ends up drumming up a conversation, the personal trainer at his gym…” Bobby trailed off slowly. “Clearly, they’re amateurs.”
Eddie’s eyes lifted to Bobby’s then. “Oh, and you think you have it figured out?”
“It’s clearly someone who knows Buck very well,” the older man began, “who knows intimate details about him, and who has known him long enough to really pine over him.”
“Oh, well that’s a lot of information to take from one letter.”
“Yes, but also the knowledge that there are twelve others.” Eddie fought the desire to slam his head against the table in defeat. Bobby was too observant, and he knew what was coming before it actually happened. Not because of what Bobby had said to him, but by the knowing look in his eyes. It was the same look that he gave to Christopher when he was trying to get away with something, and Eddie knew it.
He decided to play along, if for nothing else than to not have to admit it to Bobby himself. “So, who do you speculate it is?”
“It’s not speculation,” Bobby told him pointedly, finding his gaze, “the feelings, the intimate knowledge, the handwriting… it’s you, Eddie.”
**
Eddie stepped into the locker room on the day before Valentine’s Day, noticing Buck sitting on the bench. “You’re early,” Eddie observed, trying not to be distracted by the familiar letter that was grasped between his hands.
“I just-” Buck sighed heavily as he read over the words, scouring it for clues. “I feel like it shouldn’t be that hard to figure this out.”
“Why are you so worried about it, man?” Eddie asked, genuinely curious. “You have a date for tomorrow night, and I’m sure it will be great to let a little steam off, right?”
“You don’t get it. You didn’t read this,” Buck shoved the letter in Eddie’s direction, waiting for him to take it. “How can I be okay with something meaningless, when there is someone in my world who feels like this?”
Eddie internalized a groan, taking the letter from Buck. He looked down at his writing, scrawled messily over the page.  His words, a confession of his feelings for Buck that he was never supposed to see.
Buck,
Some days I wonder what my life was like before you walked into it. I try to scour my brain for my best memories, and less for one or two, all of them have been since we met. Some people might think that is just a coincidence, but I know better. My life is made better every day for knowing you.
You are reckless sometimes and lead with your heart, and although it drives me crazy, that is one of the things that I love about you. You would give everything you have for those you care about, and damn the consequences. I wish I could be as open about my feelings as you are. I wish I could push back this crippling fear of the what-ifs. I’m writing this all to you in a letter that I’m never going to mail, that’s the kind of fear that I live with. Because I know that this will never work out. Because I ruin every romantic relationship that has ever mattered in my life.
And I refuse to destroy you as I have with those who came before you.
So I’ll continue to watch you live your life, and meet new people. And with every new date that you gush about, I have to remember that this is my decision. I can’t blame them, either, because nobody is immune to that Evan Buckley charm.
But in each of those moments, I’ll think about what it would be like to take their place. To have you show up at my doorstep, instead of theirs. And when you tell me about your date, I’ll just smile, because you deserve happiness, even if I know that I can’t be the one to give that to you.
XO
It was Buck’s hand on his shoulder that brought Eddie back. “So what do you think?”
Eddie sighed, “it’s just a letter, Buck.”
“What?” Buck looked at Eddie incredulously, as though he was trying to convince him that the earth was square. “How can you even think that? Feelings like that… why would anyone ever keep those feelings to themself? How is that fair to this person, or to me?”
This time Eddie groaned out loud, handing the letter back to Buck. “I’m sure they have their reasons, sounds like they have a pretty screwed up past. Maybe they’re doing you a favor. And, not for nothing? But if you had feelings for this person, they’d already know.”
“Doing me a favor? I can’t believe that is how you see this. I don’t get why you can’t see how this would matter to me.”
“Because they are just meaningless words!” Eddie shouted in frustration. “As much as I’d love to get more invested in your love life like the rest of the damn firehouse, I’ve gotta finish getting ready for our shift.” He turned back to his locker and away from Buck, stunning him into silence.
**
Eddie slipped into his house after a work out at the gym, the need to release some of the tension before he exploded winning out. He’d gone several rounds with the punching bag, and although he was hoping for a release of some sort, he felt himself just as tightly wound as before.
He sighed as he tossed the bag on the floor, just inside the doorway. It was Valentine’s Day and he had no bigger plans than going to the gym and making heart-shaped cookies with his kid. “Carla? Chris?” Eddie called as he stepped further inside.
“I’m in the kitchen!” Carla answered. Eddie glanced around the kitchen, a curious look on his face.
“Where’s Chris?”
“Oh, Buck’s getting him, should be here any minute?”
“What?” Eddie heard the tightness in his voice and cringed.
Carla grabbed the cookie sheet from the oven with oven mitts, setting it on top of the stove before promptly closing the oven door. “Is that a problem, Eddie?” She snapped back.
Eddie sighed, shaking his head. “No, no it’s not I just- thought this afternoon would just be me and Chris, that’s all.” And he didn’t know how long he could handle the awkward tension between them, after his outburst in the locker room, only the day before. Eddie heard the sound of the front door closing, and his heart pounded harder in his chest.
“Honey, we’re home!” Buck called loudly, the sound of Christopher’s crutches and his laughter instantly filling the small house.
“Here, put these on the cooling rack so I can take them home to my honey.” Carla smiled at Eddie, as he followed her orders. The table was adorned with a variety of frostings and sprinkles, and she had three large bowls with a neat ball of dough saran-wrapped in each. “I’m going to take these and decorate them at home. But you have everything you need here.”
“Did you leave the directions for the oven?” Eddie asked her dumbly.
Carla sighed, “They’re on the recipe card, but that’s not what I was talking about Eddie.” She grabbed a container, piling the cookies in as Buck and Christopher joined them. Eddie looked at her cluelessly for a moment, watching as she said her goodbyes.
His eyes slid over to Buck’s, remaining silent for a moment. “Thanks for picking up Chris,” he finally sputtered.
“I had a little something for him for Valentine’s Day, and thought he’d like it if I gave it to him today.” Buck shrugged.
Eddie opened his mouth to ask if he planned on staying, but was cut off abruptly by Christopher’s excited words. “Do you want to see it, Daddy?”
A light chuckle escaped his lips as he moved closer to Chris, crouching down to his level. “Of course I do, mijo.” Christopher grinned as he showed Eddie the brightly colored plush dinosaur, holding a heart in its tiny t-rex hands.
Eddie let out a laugh as he looked at the dinosaur. “This is great. Did you tell Buck thank you?”
“Of course he did, you have the most polite kid on earth,” Buck assured him.
“Hey bud, why don’t you wash your hands and then we can make some cookies, alright?” Eddie watched as Christopher left the room to wash his hands.  Eddie washed his hands at the kitchen sink before turning to look at Buck. “Are you going to stay and make cookies, or do you need to get ready for the big date tonight?
“Nah, I can stay, as long as that’s alright with you.”
“Yeah, of course,” Eddie nodded as he stepped aside for Buck to wash his hands at the sink.
“Look,” Buck began before letting out a heavy sigh, “I think I owe you an apology, for yesterday.” Eddie’s eyes snapped to Buck’s with a look of bewilderment. “I was being really inconsiderate of your feelings. Talking about my search for this secret admirer and- and you don’t even have plans. Anyways, I’m sorry.”
“Buck, it’s not like that at all. I was just in a mood, you didn’t do anything wrong. I have plans with Chris tonight and that’s enough for me,” Eddie assured him.
They both glanced up as they heard Christopher’s crutches, just before he made his way back into the kitchen. “Why don’t you tell us how your Valentine’s Day party at school went?” Eddie suggested, as he rolled out Christopher’s dough and set several different heart-shaped cutouts in front of him. He quickly rolled out his ball of dough before handing the rolling pin to Buck.
“It was really fun, I got so many cards.” Christopher grinned, “they let us open our mailboxes at school, but we couldn’t eat any of the candy.”
“Aw man, that sounds like fun,” Buck told him with a smile. “I wish I had a mailbox full of cards.”
Christopher looked up from what he was doing, a look of confusion causing his brows to cinch together. “But Buck, you had a mailbox full of cards. From my dad.”
Fuck. Eddie’s eyes jolted up to Christopher’s, his heart beginning to beat so loudly that it thundered in his ears. He rose from the table quickly, putting the first tray of cookies into the oven and setting the timer, his mind frantically screaming at him.
Buck set down the cookie-cutter, leaning forward slightly towards Christopher. “What do you mean?”
Chris sighed as he looked at Buck closely. “The other day I was-”
“Hey Christopher, didn’t you say this morning that you had something to give to Buck when you saw him?” Eddie attempted to redirect Chris, the anxiety of the entire situation making him feel as though the walls were closing in.  It was only a matter of time before Buck knew that it was Eddie that was in love with him, and their friendship would be over.
Chris nodded his head at Eddie’s question. “I’ll go get it.”
Buck aimed a questioning look in Eddie’s direction. The fact that he had interrupted Chris was so unlike him. Buck pursed his lips together, trying to piece together the puzzle. “I’ll go with you,” Buck offered, following Chris out of the room.
Well, that didn’t go as planned. “Son of a bitch,” he muttered under his breath once Buck and Chris were out of earshot, dropping his head into his hands for a pause. He watched as the two of them re-entered the room a few minutes later. “Everything all set?”
“Yup,” Chris smiled happily as he got resituated. “Can we finish making the cookies now? I really want to eat some frosting.” Buck and Eddie laughed at his words.
“Yeah, let’s finish up.” Eddie smiled at the boy, surprised that Buck hadn’t pressed when he’d come back into the room.
They finished making the cookies and destroying the kitchen about an hour later. They taste-tested every kind of frosting and piled the sprinkles on high.
Eddie glanced at the clock, seeing that it was already past five. “You’d better get going man, you don’t want to be late.”
Buck seemed unfazed by his words, and upon hearing the doorbell ring he grinned at Christopher. “I’ll get that.” Buck rose to his feet quickly, walking to the door. “Isabel, it’s so great to see you.”
“Abuela!” Christopher called excitedly as he made his way to her. She embraced him, placing a doting kiss on the crown of his head.
“Abuela?” Eddie asked in confusion, joining them in the entryway.
“You have fun tonight, okay?” She smiled widely at Eddie.
“But Abuela, why are you here? I didn’t-” Eddie scratched his head, stopping short as confusion washed over him. He was sure that he hadn’t asked her to watch Chris tonight, there was no need. He had no plans other than spending the evening with Chris, and now that was being taken away.
“You have a kid-free night, enjoy it,” she demanded, before placing an affectionate kiss on his cheek. She grabbed the small duffel bag that was sitting by the door.
“Wait, who packed a bag?” Eddie asked, the lines that were creasing his forehead deepening.
He felt a hand on his shoulder that grounded him. “Just let it be,” Buck assured him, Christopher and Isabel saying their goodbyes to Eddie. Only minutes later a silent house surrounded them.
“You’d better go before you’re late.” Eddie turned to Buck.
“I canceled the date two days ago, Eddie. I don’t have anywhere to be.” Buck didn’t wait for Eddie’s reaction to his words, stepping into the kitchen and beginning to clean up the mess they’d made.
“Oh, well, you don’t have to stay and do dishes. I’ve got it.” Eddie trailed him into the kitchen, stepping around Buck to turn on the faucet, wetting a washcloth to clean the crusty frosting from the table.
“I get it, you want me to leave so that we can ignore what Chris said in here earlier.” Buck grabbed the bowls from the table and set them down into the sink.
“No,” Eddie sighed. “I can handle it, that’s all.” Eddie moved around Buck again, shaking off the washcloth in the sink before turning back around.
“That’s what you always do, right, Eds? You handle it?” Buck stepped into Eddie’s space again, and Eddie felt his breath hitch. “We don’t talk about our feelings, we just keep that shit bottled up until we can’t handle it anymore, right? We get into illegal street fighting when we can’t deal with our rage. We write our real feelings out in letters that are never going to be sent. Fuck, Eddie!” Buck’s hands gripped the sink behind Eddie, not allowing him another chance to avoid this.
“Buck.” His name was barely a whisper on Eddie’s lips.
“That’s all you’ve got for me now?” Buck let out an uneven laugh out of frustration, the sound foreign to Eddie’s ears. “Days of listening to me agonize about who wrote those letters, who could possibly have those feelings for me. And it was you all along. And you can’t even say it, you can’t even admit it to me now!” He shook his head, wounded blue orbs looking down into Eddie’s hazel ones.
“You make it sound like all of this is easy. You are so fucking frustrating!” A tremor shook through Eddie’s body, the emotion of it all causing Eddie to burst at the seams. Before Eddie had the chance to brace against the sink, Buck was pressed up against his front, pinning Eddie to the counter behind him.
“Would it be easier for you if we were in a metal cage right now?” Buck asked deeply, tongue flicking out to wet his lips, eyes not wavering from Eddie’s.  Eddie shook his head silently, his eyes finally breaking their gaze, unable to speak for a long moment as he felt Buck pressed up against him. “I swear to God, Eddie if you don’t look at me,” Eddie’s eyes instantly snapped back to Buck’s, his blue eyes burning with frustration and anger, and something that Eddie could only identify as desire.
Buck’s face was mere inches from Eddie’s now, his breath scented with the sweet smell of sugar cookies. Eddie bit back the desire to groan at this closeness that he’d only dreamt about before, eyes locked on Buck’s. “What do you want?” Buck asked, his words coming out slow, sounding out every syllable with care.
“It’s not about what I want, Buck,” Eddie whispered, the nagging voice in the back of his mind continuing to scream out, reminding him of his past failures. Reminding him of how terrible his entire relationship with Shannon had been. How those choices had affected Christopher.
He swallowed roughly, feeling the tears that were beginning to burn behind his eyes. Eddie hesitated, not wanting Buck to see the sadness there. Buck remained insistent, his fingers cupping below Eddie’s chin, tipping his face so that his eyes were forced to find Buck’s again, moving another millimeter closer. “What do you want?” Buck’s voice deepened with the whisper.
Eddie worried his bottom lip between his teeth, feeling the tears slip down his cheeks. Finally, the admission slipped past his lips. “You.” The anger finally left Buck’s eyes, his thumbs sliding down Eddie’s cheeks to wipe away the tears that had fallen, stopping in the roughness of Eddie’s stubble. They stood there like that for a long moment before Buck dragged his thumb against Eddie’s lower lip, making Eddie’s teeth release the hold.
Buck dipped his head down, covering Eddie’s lips with his own in an agonizingly slow kiss. Eddie felt the hesitation fall away, the physical tension in his body fading away. He leaned into Buck more, one hand resting against Buck’s hip, his other hand cupping the back of his head, drawing him closer as their lips moved against each other. Several thundering heartbeats later, Buck placed a hand against Eddie’s chest, breaking the kiss. A small smirk played at the corners of his lips. “See what happens when we talk about our feelings?”
Eddie laughed lightly, feeling like the hands that had been clenching his heart tightly over the past week had finally let go, “Shut up.” It was Eddie who grabbed hold of Buck’s face this time, taking the lead and turning them until it was Buck who was shoved against the sink.  Buck groaned into Eddie’s lips, the vibration coursing through Eddie until it settled low into his stomach. Eddie pulled back from the kiss slowly, the sound of Buck’s grumbling stomach causing Eddie’s lips to lift into a smirk. “Guess I have to feed you, too.”
“Eating could wait,” Buck told him with a light shrug of his shoulder, heavy-lidded eyes settled on Eddie.  His stomach grumbled again, clearly in disagreement.
Eddie stepped away from Buck, immediately missing the feel of him. He grabbed a heart-shaped cookie from the plate and handed it to Buck. “I’ll call and order us a pizza, you eat this and quiet the monster. I’m sure we can find something to do with our time until the pizza gets here.”
Eddie grinned as he stepped away, realizing that yet again that he owed everything to his brilliant kid.
 **
Eddie made his way up the steps of the firehouse, smiling when he found Buck and Bobby setting the table for the crew’s breakfast. Hen and Chim had already gathered, moving the food to the table. “Sorry Cap, Christopher’s appointment ran over a few minutes,” he said by way of an apology. “Anything I can do to help?”
“No, I think we’re all good. Dig in.” Bobby smiled, taking in the seemingly contented faces of his entire crew. That gave Bobby pause. It was the first day they were scheduled to work since Valentine’s Day, and Eddie had been less than thrilled about the holiday to begin with. Then there was Buck, who had been on a mission to find the identity of his secret admirer. “So, how was everyone’s Valentine’s Day?”
“It was great,” Hen answered as she shoveled a generous portion of eggs onto her plate. “We were able to make it out for a nice dinner… it was a nice change of pace. Did Athena like her surprise?”
“Can I get the bacon over here, before you answer that, Cap?” Chim asked with a grin as Bobby handed him the plate.
“She loved it. So, thank you for keeping it a secret.” He laughed lightly, nodding his appreciation to Hen. “What about you Chim, you and Maddie have a nice evening out?”
“Yeah, she loved the restaurant you recommended, raved about it the whole way home.”
“And that is the most that you will tell us about your Valentine’s Day with my sister,” Buck warned with a stern look.
“What about you, Buck, have any emergency tracheotomies?” Chim quipped.
“Eddie, what about you? What did you end up doing?” Bobby asked, taking a bite of his eggs, the rest of the crew beginning to shovel food in.
“Pizza and Netflix,” they said in unison, holding each other’s gaze for a beat too long.
Bobby couldn’t fight the grin that lit up his face. “Sounds like a nice, quiet way to spend the holiday.”
“No tracheotomy required,” Buck laughed, “good thing my secret admirer is a great medic, just in case there is a bread emergency.”
“Hold up… hold up a damn minute,” Hen’s eyes popped as her jaw dropped open, “Eddie was your secret admirer this whole damn time?”
“It took all of you long enough to figure it out,” Bobby said with a raised brow, reaching over to grab a cinnamon roll and placing it onto his plate.
“Wait, you knew?” Chim asked, his tone turning playfully accusatory. “You knew and you didn’t share that information with us?”
“Or me, for that matter,” Buck added before taking several long swallows of his orange juice.
Bobby laughed before shrugging his shoulders., “Well you figured it out, so what’s the harm?”
“Actually, he didn’t,” Eddie teased, reaching over and grabbing the last piece of bacon off of Buck’s plate. “Christopher, the little rat that delivered the letters in the first place, told him.”
“God, I love that kid. He’s got more common sense than the two of you combined,” Hen chuckled. The rest of them laughed in agreement, both Buck and Eddie knowing that an argument would be feeble. And wrong.
Eddie smiled silently, enjoying the laughter that surrounded them. His eyes met Buck’s across the table, and Buck winked at him before he turned his attention back to his plate of food. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had a happy Valentine’s Day. And now thanks to Christopher and Buck, he couldn’t imagine a happier one.

Day 2 (11th of February) - “That might just be the least romantic thing you’ve ever said to me” @buddietinesweek
Love sick
Buck was waiting on his doctor to come back with his results. She'd said his throat looked irritated then took a swab.
He wasn't feeling too hot. Or, well that wasn't the right way of putting it. He felt like his skin was on fire to top off his throat hurting.
"Mr. Buckley." She pulled him out of his phone where he was watching short videos while he was alone to try cheering himself up.
"Just Buck is fine." Buck forced a smile once he finished coughing.
"Well, your results came back as streptococcal pharyngitis. Strep throat. That's what's causing your fever. We'll get you on some oral antibiotics." At buck's gulping which made him wince she continued.
"I'd advise you need to avoid others for a few weeks at the least. You can come back in a week or so for a checkup though. I'm sure you already know not to share any fluids with others." At buck's nod she went on.
"Be sure to keep as clean as you can as it can be passed on easily to those around you through sneezing and coughing. The nurse at the front desk can take your insurance and set up where you want your prescription to go before you leave. You didn't have any questions sir?"
"But Valentine's in less than a week." Buck groaned.
"I'm sure you're partner would like to stay healthy and you wouldn't want to pass it on to people you love." She said.
"Yeah, yeah. I don't have to like it." Buck huffed as he got up to go.
This was just great. His first Valentine's day with Eddie since last year when they got together after it had already passed. Buck couldn't catch a break. But he'd be damned if he let himself infect Christopher and Eddie with this. He felt miserable and he wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
His trip out towards his jeep and eventually to the store for cleaning supplies and comfort food while waiting for his drugs was a blur. Buck's pretty sure he could double for a zombie with how he looked but made sure to keep to himself avoiding a cart for his arms and hands. His cough drops were helping too.
Soon he was on his way home to spread the news. Casa de Buckley was off limits till further notice. He took his first dose with food and sent out the mass text. Bobby would have to coordinate things till Buck was 100% again.
Buck decided to call Eddie instead though to both be more personal with his boyfriend and hear his comforting voice.
"Hey Buck, how are you babe?" He heard that smile.
"I'm sweating because my brains melting, and my throat feels like a bee stung my insides, but all i can think about is not being able to kiss you or see Christopher,"
"Wait. You're sick? But I just saw you yesterday”
"Yeah."
"I'm coming over."
"No! Eddie I'm not getting you sick with my dick or yours for that matter no matter how hot and sweet you are fever delusions or not and that's final. I'll barricade my door if I have to. Don't test me man. Please," Buck started coughing only to sigh.
“That might just be both the most and least romantic thing you’ve ever said to me”
"Just keep talking. I like the sound of your voice Eds. And I might owe you a rain check for valentine's,"
"Ok. But you're more important than some holiday. Do you wanna talk to Christopher too?"
"Sure. I gotta explain why movie nights cancelled. Let me drink something, "
"It was game night. I'll get him."
"Right. I'm sick cut me a break" buck laughed.
"Hi buck." Christopher's voice brought a smile to his face.
"Hey buddy." Buck replied.
"Are you ok?"
"No buddy I'm sick. But I'll be better in maybe over a week. The doctor got me medicine to help but hearing you guys is good too." Buck said.
Christopher told him about his day after Eddie got home along with Eddie saying what they'd gotten up to at work. Buck replied when he could until he was snoring.
"Daddy, i think buck fell asleep." Christopher whispered.
"Yeah. Say good night."
Christopher did then handed back the phone.
Eddie went to his room. He'd put Christopher to sleep in another half hour. He left the call connected even if someone else might find it odd. Buck was his boyfriend so he could do that right?
He'd fall asleep to the sound of Buck once he put Christopher to bed a few minutes later.
-
It'd been a few days. Well four to be exact.
Eddie had wormed his way inside despite buck's protests. They didn't kiss and barely held hands as they watched a movie while buck's soup cooked.
"I can't figure out how I got sick still" buck said as Eddie brought him a bowl.
"It could have been the smallest thing. Don't worry about it. Just get better and if you're not okay by valentine's then we'll do something else later." Eddie turned off the TV.
"What?" Buck blew his spoon away from Eddie.
"I'm gonna go. Finish your soup then take a nap Buck. Love you." Eddie moved to kiss Buck on reflex.
Buck tucked his head as Eddie's lips met his hairline and forehead near his birthmark.
"Oh. Sorry. I guess I forgot,”
"You're not getting sick. I love you too much for that." Buck smiled as Eddie left.
-
It was valentine's day. Outside of Maddie and Chimney coming over to check up on him his place was still quarantined.
Buck sat alone in his apartment as his favorite show was ending.
Eddie hadn't said much about today during their nightly check ins with Christopher too.
The door opened to Eddie bringing in a pizza.
"Eddie-"
"I know, no kissing or sex,I'm not a caveman Buck."
Buck snickered.
"Stop laughing." Eddie said lightly as he got them drinks.
"You've gotta admit you walked into that one even if your are pretty good at it mister punchy."
They had space between them as Buck found a romcom to watch.
Half way through Buck turned it off as the guy was way too creepy even if he was hot.
Eddie switched the TV over as Buck asked. "So Christopher okay?"
"He misses you, same as me. He's with my Tia tonight and his cousin."
"Wait. What are you doing? You can’t sleep over Eddie even if I feel a little better.”
"Relax it’s just for the surprise part of our date night. I had to go to two stores for this and it wasn't even the version I wanted."
Buck watched as a Sims game booted up on his console.
"Okay?" He still didn't get it.
"At least one version of me can kiss you tonight. Come on, we're gonna make you first. Think this game says they even got supernatural stuff in it too." Eddie started on the character creation.
Buck found it entirely hilarious but also incredibly thoughtful. With Eddie's character finished and them looking for passable doppelgangers they began the game.
They kissed as a fire started in the kitchen only for the fire department to show up and save them.
Eddie had them get in the hot tub as music was playing. It was nice until their random visiting neighbor died summoning death.
"Okay this is just weird now." Buck said as he flirted with the grim reaper making Eddie jealous.
"How could you cheat on me with death?" Eddie asked incredulously.
"I just did it. Relax it’s not like I really like them. Oh." Buck watched his avatar hug death.
"I'm a werewolf?!" Eddie asked as the moon rose transforming him.
"Dude. Death just proposed to me and I turned them down for you. Wait, now I'm a zombie?"
Eddie turned off the game after that.
"Okay. Maybe that wasn't a good idea."
"No. It was great. I haven't laughed like that all week. Real me would never cheat on you, you're it for me." Buck leaned in absentmindedly as Eddie smiled before remembering and leaning away.
"Want another slice?" Eddie got up.
"Yeah. I can't have you in me so I guess I'll just have to settle for that." Buck joked startling Eddie to drop his plate into the sink.
"Buck you can't just say that.I’m only human, it’s hard not jumping your bones babe. But I'm glad you're feeling better." Eddie said while taking the second controller and moving it before sitting back down.
"The second I'm cleared of the zombie virus I'm gonna be all over you." Buck said devouring his food with fervor.
"I look forward to it. But until then this is a good date because I'm spending it with you." Eddie said drinking his lime soda before enjoying another slice.
"I owe Christopher hugs and kisses too so he's first then I'm all yours." Buck winked.
"All mine you say, hmm. I like the sound of that. The things we could do." Eddie raised his eyebrow.
"Just keep that thought for a few more days and hope my doctor tells me I'm all good." Buck grinned.
"You're more than good." Eddie said.
"You know what I meant."
"Yeah. But it's still true."
They were back to it now watching an action movie.
Eddie was glad Buck didn't look so down anymore. He'd wait a lifetime for buck, he was worth it.

To Look After You
Written for Day 2 of @buddietinesweek Also on AO3.
Eddie sighed as he sat on the bathroom floor next to his sick, crying son.  “Hey buddy.  You ready to try to head back to your bed?  I changed your sheets for you.”
This wasn’t how this day was supposed to go.  Eddie was supposed to get Christopher off to school and then go meet Buck for a Valentines lunch since they both had a shift the evening of Valentines Day.  It was supposed to be a romantic afternoon, just the two of them.  Carla was even going to pick Chris up from school so that Eddie and Buck could have more time, just the two of them.  Then Christopher yelled for him at 4 that morning.  The poor kid was crying in his bed, covered in vomit because he hadn’t been able to get up fast enough.  He had gotten Christopher in the shower and helped him rinse off, but just as soon as he was dressed in clean pajamas, Christopher leaned over the toilet and threw up once more.  Once he was sure that Christopher was okay on the bathroom floor, near the toilet just in case, Eddie ran to his son’s room to change the bedding.  Now here they were, sitting on the bathroom floor, waiting for Christopher’s answer.
“I-I think so,” the young boy whispered hoarsely.
Eddie lifted Christopher up and carried him back to his bedroom.  He tucked him in, and placed a trash can within Christopher’s reach.  “I’ll let your teacher know you’re not going to be there.”
“I’m sorry about your date with Bucky,” Christopher said, sadly.
“You don’t ever have to be sorry for something that is beyond your control,” Eddie assured him.  “Buck will understand.  We’ll have our Valentines another day.  You just focus on getting better.”
Eddie made his way to his own room and picked up his cell phone.  He sent a quick email to Chris’ teacher about school and then sent a quick text to Buck.  “I’m going to have to cancel today.  Chris is sick,” the text read.
He hadn’t expected Buck to immediately text back, but sure enough, his text alert went off.  “Poor kid.  I’ll come over at a more decent hour.  Need anything?”
“I don’t want you to get sick.”
“I’m not worried about that.”
Later that morning, Buck let himself in using the key that Eddie had given him.  He walked in to find Christopher fast asleep on the couch, trashcan nearby.  He looked around to find Eddie in the kitchen, viciously scrubbing all the surfaces that Christopher may have touched.
“You look like shit,” Buck commented, startling Eddie.
“That might just be the least romantic thing you have ever said to me,” Eddie chuckled.  “I haven’t slept since 4 am.”
Buck smiled.  “Why don’t you go get some sleep?  I’ll disinfect everything and keep an eye on Chris.”
“You don’t have to be here.”
“Yes I do.”  Buck walked around the counter and took Eddie’s hands in his own.  “It’s part of what being a family means.  When he’s sick and you’re dead on your feet, I’m here to help look after you.  Both of you.  I agreed to being a part of this family.  You don’t have to be a single parent anymore Eddie.”
Eddie leaned forward and closed the gap between them.  “I love you.”
Buck smiled, still not used to hearing Eddie tell him those three words.  “I love you, too,” he whispered back.  “Both of you.  So off you go, get in bed and take a nap.  When you wake up, everything will be clean and Chris will still be on the couch.”  With that, Buck practically pushed Eddie out of the kitchen and in the direction of his bedroom.
Buck busied himself for the next two hours cleaning.  Armed with clorox wipes and lysol spray, Buck made sure everything was clean.  Coffee tables, counters, dining tables, bedroom furniture was all sprayed down and then wiped down as an extra precaution.  Buck noticed the sheets in the washing machine and made sure to move them over to the dryer.  Christopher woke up while Buck was cleaning, but wasn’t sick again.  Buck encouraged the young boy to sip on a Gatorade while he watched The Incredibles.  When Eddie reemerged from his bedroom, he found his son and boyfriend sitting on the sofa watching the movie, and talking to each other.
“Dad said I shouldn’t be,” Christopher began, “But I’m sorry you had to cancel your date.”
“Your dad was right,” Buck said.  “You don’t ever have to be sorry for being sick.  It happens.  I’m just glad that I could help you and your dad.”
“Hey Buck.”
“Yeah, bud?”
Are you and Dad going to get married?”
Buck smiled at the thought of becoming Buckley-Diaz one day.  “Maybe, bud.  We haven’t been dating for very long though.”
Chris smiled.  “I’d like that,” he said.  “Dad’s happier when you’re around.”
“I’m happy when he’s around too.”  Buck looked up to see Eddie standing in the doorway.  “Look who’s up!”
Eddie walked over to the couch and sat himself next to Buck, swinging an arm around his shoulders.  “Thank you,” he whispered in his boyfriend’s ear.
“For what?” Buck said, curling into Eddie’s side.
“Being a part of our family.”

DAY 1: SECRET ADMIRER
Filled Prompt for Day 1 of Buddie’s Valentine’s Week!
“You know” Buck’s voice is a little loud in the middle of the lockers room, mostly because it’s just the two of them now, but it does attract Eddie’s attention to him. “I got some cookies today” His face must not show whatever that his best friend is expecting, because he keeps talking. “For Valentine’s day. I got an admirer” It’s like Buck is trying to prompt him to say something back, but he isn’t sure what exactly.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Buck gets stuff particularly for him, considering he plays hero quite a lot and it is Valentine’s Day, so it’s less strange even.
“Make sure they are not happy cookies before you eat them” An easy smile plays on his lips as he stands and passes beside Buck, quickly patting his shoulder before making his way to the trucks.
“Carla made them!” What? Carla has a husband? It was probably one of those things when she knew Buck would be too happy with something silly like that, so she did it. In all honesty, Eddie would have done it too, if he hadn’t been busy with work.
And probably if it didn’t have the potential to make things weird cause well, Valentine’s Day. He knows he is a chessy man, but writing some extent declaration of love in a heart shaped cake is a little bit too much for him. Just a tiny bit. It still doesn’t explain why is Buck sort of screaming this information in the middle of the station.
“That’s… Nice of her? Buddie, are you okay?” His eyes move up, where Hen, Chimney and Bobby are seeing the scene unfold from the loft railing, all looking as confused as he feels. His Captain seems one second to actually come down to see what’s going on.
“I just…” Looking back at Buck, and wow, he is a lot closer now, Eddie has the instant reflex to hold him by the arm, mostly because he knows his best friend is struggling with something and he would have to be dead to not offer his support and patience. In that spirit, he waits until the other man speaks again. “They had a note on them”
Eddie holds the note he is being offered, opening carefully, just in case, and he can swear that his heart stops right in that spot.
‘ Hey Bucky! You make my daddy really happy and your breakfasts are the best thing in the world so you should his Valentines! ‘
It’s on Carla’s handwriting and while it doesn’t have a name at the end, he even read it on Christopher’s voice. There is a lot going on inside his head, about how his son is sending chocolates to Buck on his behalf and how this is so not how this should be happening and hey, maybe he can say something to laugh it off, but Buck’s hand on his own makes his brain stop working immediately.
Does Buck look at him with so much hope all the time? Oh God.
“I…” Fuck it. “He is not wrong, your secret admirer. Your breakfasts are really the best” It makes Buck smile so wide that his teeth actually shine under the light as he steps even closer and Eddie has to hold his breath.
“Just about that?”
“I mean, sometimes you are a pain in my ass, but…”
“Listen, I was gonna kiss you just now but if you keep being an asshole, Chimney is literally right there behind us”
That gets a laugh out of him, but before Buck can actually move away from him, Eddie is already moving forward to press his lips against his, smiling too hard to do it properly.
Buck’s secret admirer is gonna have ice-cream today after dinner, for sure.

Buddietines Day 4💕
“Eddie are you busy tomorrow night?”
“Nope. Did you wanna hang out? Chris will be with Abuela, but we can do something.”
“It’s Valentines Day Eve. which is Galentines day for women and their friends so we could have a Broentines day.” Buck said.
Eddie began laughing hysterically.
“Wait you watch parks and rec?” Eddie said in shock due to the fact Buck was usually clueless to all pop culture references.
“What’s that?” Buck asked.
“A tv show. That’s what galentines day is from.” Eddie said.
Buck shrugged. “ I saw it on Instagram.”
“Whatever, but do we really have to call it broentines day?” Eddie cringed.
“Fine. What do you want to call it?” Buck huffed.
“I don’t know.” Eddie bit his lip.
“Broentines Day it is.” Buck laughed.
“So what are we doing?” Eddie bit his lipe
“Dinner and a movie.”
“Sounds good to me.” Eddie nodded
“I’ll cook!” Buck smiled.
“Please make lasagna. I love your lasagna.” Eddie said with excitement.
“Lasagna it is!” Buck grinned.
The next day Eddie arrived at Bucks and all the lights were out the room was filled with candles.
“Um what’s with the candles?” Eddie asked.
“My stupid neighbor blew a fuse. The power should be back on in an hour or two.” Buck sighed.
“Is the lasagna done?” Eddie panicked.
“Chill ok. The food is done it was ready right before I lost power.” Buck smiled.
“Oh good.” Eddie laughed.
With the candles and low lighting it started feeling less like a bro thing and more like a date. A really romantic date.
After dinner they couldn’t use the tv so Buck got his laptop out for their movie. Since the screen was so small they were sitting a little closer than normal. Thighs and shoulders pressed together.
Eddie stretched, and then placed his arm around the back of the couch. Buck knew this move he’d used it quite a few times. Buck could feel Eddies eyes on him, and slowly turned to face him. Heart racing as he saw Eddie leaning closer and closer, lips almost touching until the power flicked on lighting up the room and Buck practically jumped off the couch.
Eddie got up and headed towards the door.
“I’m sorry I.” Buck paused midsentance when Eddie flipped the lights back off and returned next to him on the couch.
“Now where were we?” Eddie grinned leaning closer to Buck.
Buck leaned closer and closer finally their lips met. It started off soft, but quickly became rough and more passion filled Buck was literally in Eddies lap by the time they pulled away.
“I don’t think this is classified as Broentines behavior.” Buck laughed.
“Good that’s a dumb name anyway.” Eddie smiled resting his forehead on Bucks.

Puzzle Pieces (one-shot)
Summary: Valentine’s Day goes wrong - Buddietines Week Day 5.
Surprised by Eddie asking what he’s doing for Valentine’s Day, Buck doesn’t expect it to be because Eddie has a date and needs someone to watch Christopher.
Ship: Buck/Eddie
Words: 5,146
Notes: Happy Valentine’s Day!
This fic was sort of supposed to fit the blind date prompt but since the blind date wasn’t buddie, I liked the idea of it fitting in with the Valentine’s Day goes wrong prompt instead. At the time when I was writing this I also only intended to write one Valentine’s Day fic and figured that posting on actual Valentine’s Day felt right. (I have now written fics to fic the budditines prompts for Saturday and Sunday so...) Anyway, enjoy.
Read on Ao3
------
Valentine’s Day was coming up. It had been coming up since the beginning of the year since apparently every store he stepped foot into went from Christmas things to Valentine’s Day things practically overnight. It was all really ridiculous. The last time that Buck celebrated Valentine’s Day was with Abby on what could probably be described as the worst date that he’d ever been on. He’d ended up at the hospital. Because that was how most things tended to end for Buck.
Maddie was excited for this one, though. She and Chimney were doing really well. Buck was happy for the two of them. They both absolutely deserved each other in the best way possible and Buck was happy that they were excited for the holiday.
Hen was planning something for Karen that she was excited about. Buck liked seeing Hen looking happier. After everything with the IVF not going well and then the incident with the ambulance, Buck was glad to see that they were doing a lot better.
Even Bobby had plans for some sort of romantic getaway with Athena.
The only one that didn’t seem thrilled or interested in Valentine’s Day was Eddie. But then, Eddie had lost his wife not even a year ago that the holiday meant for lovers really wasn’t going to do much to interest him.
Buck for his part had plans to stay home and watch something action packed or maybe more cooking shows and his heart would be safe in the knowledge that Eddie wasn’t out on a date or getting someone chocolate and flowers but that he was probably with Christopher. A part of him was even considering asking Eddie if he could join him and Christopher for the night. They could do video games or movies and junk food that they shouldn’t really be eating. It would be fun.
So, when February 14th was a week away, the last thing Buck expected was for Eddie to nudge his shoulder when they were leaving the locker room.
“What’s up?”
“So, I have a favor to ask,” Eddie said.
“Sure, man. Anything.”
Eddie nodded. “I just wanted to know if you were doing anything on the 14th?”
Buck felt like his heart stopped. “Uh. Valentine’s Day?”
“Yeah, Buck.”
“Uh. No. No plans.” Buck didn’t know what to think. His mind was reeling with possibilities, scenario after scenario popping into his head while he waited for Eddie to continue because he couldn’t believe that Eddie was asking him about Valentine’s day almost like he was gearing up to ask Buck out and...and Buck hadn’t even considered the possibility that Eddie might see him that way.
“Oh. Good. Good. It’s just I needed someone to watch Christopher. I don’t want to bother Carla when she has plans with her husband and Abuela is out of town and I actually kind of figured you’d be busy but since you’re not then—”
Eddie was rambling but Buck barely heard any of it because his disappointment drowned it out. Eddie had plans. He had plans with someone and he needed Buck to watch his son. That’s what Buck was good for. And it was fine. It was absolutely fine. It was just that for a small moment Buck had thought that it was something else and that Eddie wanted something else. But no, he just wanted a babysitter. And really, Buck, was pretty sure that Eddie was straight. He really had to stop letting himself get his hopes up. It would only lead to a broken heart.
“Well you can let Christopher know that he has a date,” Buck said and he plastered on a smile.
Eddie was grinning. He bumped Buck’s shoulder. “Thanks, Buck. You’re the best.”
“No problem,” Buck said and it wasn’t. He loved getting to spend time with Christopher. He just...on Valentine’s Day he may have wanted to spend time with Eddie more. Except that it was clear that Eddie just didn’t want to spend it with Buck.
Eddie didn’t tell him about his date or about his plans for Valentine’s Day and Buck didn’t ask. He didn’t want to know. It was easier to not know because then he could pretend that it was fine and that it would be just another ordinary day watching Christopher. One of Buck’s favorite things to do. He loved that kid so much.
Except that then, when Eddie arrived at his apartment to drop off Christopher, he was dressed like he was going on a date and Buck stood a bit floored by the door and only came out of his stupor when Christopher wrapped his arms around his middle.
“Hi, Buck.”
“Hey, kid,” Buck said and then ushered him inside. “Come on, we have a lot to do tonight. Go get set up on the couch. I’ll be right there.”
Eddie had stepped inside too and the door was closed behind him.
“There’s coloring books in his backpack and a few toys. It really shouldn’t be more than a couple of hours. Thanks a lot, Buck. I owe you one.”
Eddie ran over to hug and kiss Chris and then he was on his way before Buck could say anything else.
—-
Eddie had three sisters. Two older and one younger. They were all the most annoying, nosy people that he had ever known. Abuela had always called them “metidas” and “chismosas” and Eddie had always thought that it was funny until he found himself the subject of their nosiness and meddling.
[nosy and gossips]
It had started all the way back when Shannon left him and Christopher. His oldest sister, Julia, had been the one to start hinting at him moving on. Then, the second oldest, Viviana, had actually gone and made him a dating profile set to interested in men and women. His younger sister, Emilia, had started chatting up people for him as him on the dating profile. The whole thing was one giant mess. And once he found out and shut it down, they stopped mentioning him moving on for a while until they started just talking to their friends or friends of friends about him and that was somehow worse especially when he happened to run into them and they were all practically throwing themselves at him even in front of Christopher.
Eddie would be lying if moving to California hadn’t been a little in part to get away from his sisters. There were other factors too, of course. The fire department was one, and the second Shannon.
That was the thing that his sisters had never understood. She left him...but it didn’t stop him from loving her and from not wanting to move on. Even when he hated her too. And maybe even when she didn’t even want him. It was complicated in a way that they didn’t want to understand.
The thing was that his family never liked Shannon. It was lowkey dislike, but it was dislike nonetheless and then it had become full on dislike after she took off, Eddie couldn’t blame them.
When he first contacted Shannon once it was clear he needed her for Christopher’s school, he didn’t tell anyone in the family but his Abuela. It was just easier. Better. He also, absolutely didn’t tell them about Buck.
Eddie had never met anyone like Buck. He was one of the kindest, most selfless people that he knew. Someone that was loyal to a fault and that Eddie was very glad to have in his corner. He was also stupidly attractive and despite the initial animosity, Buck caught Eddie’s eye from the very first moment he saw him. Buck took his breath away. Buck was also very very much not an option and hadn’t been right from the start. And then, things had gotten complicated with Shannon and then Buck was injured and suing the department and it felt like too many things had happened for anything to spark between them even though sometimes, Eddie could swear that Buck’s eyes lingered on him for just a tad too long.
It was hard not to have a huge and glaring crush on Buck when Buck took care of Christopher and went out of his way to make sure that Christopher was happy. Buck was easy to love.
And it was entirely a mistake when Eddie told Viviana that he had a crush on a straight man.
“Which means, you’re ready to date again! Oh, Eddie, we’ve been waiting for this. And just in time for Valentine’s day.”
That was how Eddie wound up with an arranged blind date. His sisters had told him nothing. Not a name, not the gender, not even personality traits. Just that he had a date for Valentine’s Day and that he better not even consider cancelling or not showing up.
“Because it’s rude, Eddie,” Emilia had said over the phone. “That’s why you can’t just stand them up. Be a man. It’s a date, we’re not asking you to go off and marry them. You’ve done that already and look how it turned out.”
So maybe he and Shannon hadn’t dated long before they got married — prompted by her pregnancy — but it wasn’t the reason that they hadn’t ended up working. Things may have gone fast, but they had definitely loved each other. That’s why it hurt so much.
His sisters had managed to keep the date secret up until a week before Valentine’s Day. It was lucky that he didn’t have a shift. A part of him almost believed that that wasn’t any kind of coincidence but he would never be able to prove it and he was stuck going on the date anyway.
Eddie had tried arguing that there was no one to watch Christopher but when Julia offered to fly out specifically to babysit, Eddie told her he’d figure it out. Abuela was out of town and Pepa wasn’t an option either and Eddie knew Carla had plans which left him with the option of asking the one person that he hoped didn’t have any Valentine’s Day plans: Buck. And Buck, he was more than happy to watch Christopher. He didn’t have plans! It almost made Eddie ask him out instead if only to have a good reason for skipping on the blind date. But, Eddie was a coward and he wasn’t going to endanger their friendship that way.
Eddie got ready while on facetime with his sisters, each of them popping in and out to judge his clothes and his hair and trying to give him tips that often contradicted each other. Christopher kept asking why Eddie wasn’t going to hang out with him and Buck if he didn’t have work and Eddie didn’t want to explain it all so he let Viviana do it for him. It was the least she could do after all the trouble he was going to to go on a date he didn’t even want.
When Buck opened the door, Eddie was surprised by the way that Buck just stopped and looked at him and for a small moment, Eddie felt like maybe Buck was checking him out but he couldn’t be sure.
Christopher rushed forward and hugged Buck. It looked a little awkward what with the crutches, but Christopher was used to them and so was Buck.
“Hi, Buck,” Christopher said.
“Hey, kid,” Buck said, smiling at Christopher with so much warmth. “Come on, we have a lot to do tonight. Go get set up on the couch. I’ll be right there.”
Eddie stepped in after them and closed the door behind him. He longed to stay there with them, to join in on whatever Buck had planned for Christopher and to forget all about the night ahead of him. Staying in with Buck and Chris was the thing he wanted the most. He didn’t want a date with some stranger. He wanted them.
“There’s coloring books in his backpack and a few toys,” Eddie said. “It really shouldn’t be more than a couple of hours.” He was hoping it wouldn’t exceed that anyway. “Thanks a lot, Buck. I owe you one.”
Eddie ran over to hug and kiss Chris goodbye even if his son barely wrapped his arms around him, already too focused on whatever he’d put on the tv. He waved when he was at the door and left. He regretted it the moment the door closed behind him.
“Damn sisters.”
As he got into his car, he opened their group chat. One of them had named it “At Least Let’s Get Edmundo Laid” because they were just the worst. He texted them his annoyance but still drove to the restaurant where he was supposed to meet his date. The reservation had been made under Eddie’s name by one of his sisters and his date would be there waiting for him.
Eddie was nervous and a tad annoyed and mostly he hoped whoever it was wasn’t a psychopath.

“Daddy’s going on a date,” Christopher informed him.
“Yes, I kinda gathered that for myself, kiddo,” Buck said.
They were doing a puzzle. It was 300 pieces and featured Lady and the Tramp. Christopher had been excited the moment that Buck brought it out. The pieces weren’t too small and Buck was enjoying how much Christopher seemed to love the challenge of finding the right pieces that fit together.
“Yeah,” Christopher said. “My aunts kind of made him.”
“They made him?” Buck asked.
That was a twist he didn’t expect. Buck hadn’t heard much about Eddie’s sisters, other than to know that they existed and that Eddie liked the distance he had from them living all the way in LA while they were in Texas.
“Oh, look, Buck! These go together!”
Buck grinned and reached over to ruffle Christopher’s hair.
“Kind of like...like me and you, you know,” Christopher said. “We go together too.”
Buck couldn’t help but chuckle at that. This kid...he was perfect and Buck really and truly loved him.
“I guess so, Christopher,” Buck said.
It was hard to not be in the moment when Christopher was with him. As curious as he was about Eddie’s date and as much as it bothered him that Eddie was on a date at all, Christopher made for an excellent distraction.
Christopher kept playing with the puzzle and Buck mostly just watched him, high fiving him every time that he managed to get two pieces together.
“Buck,” Christopher said eventually.
“Yeah, buddy?”
“You know you and daddy fit together too,” Christopher said and he was tipping his head to one side and grinning at Buck.
“He is my best friend,” Buck said. But boy did he wish they were more.
“No. Not like friends. Like more,” Christopher said.
“I don’t know about that, bud. Anyway, pizza for dinner?”
“Yes, Buck.” Chris said.
Buck chuckled and he went to grab his phone. He was surprised to see a text from Eddie.
How’s it going? You guys doing alright?
—-
His name was Neal. His hair was dark and slicked back and he was moderately handsome. He also had no sense of humor and was just a little bit self-obsessed. Or, at least, he liked to hear himself talk and he certainly liked to talk about himself. And his sisters had expected him to get along with this guy? To want a second date? He barely wanted to get through this first one.
At one point, Eddie excused himself to the bathroom and he texted them nothing more than a bunch of question marks. None of his sisters responded. So, then, he texted Buck. Checking in on them because that was what a father did. And maybe because he was wishing that he was with them instead.
Buck didn’t respond at once and when he did it was a thumbs up emoji and Eddie didn’t think that he could start up a conversation with him while he was on his date. He’d been gone too long as it was, so Eddie went back out and Neal smiled when he returned.
“You were gone a while. Everything okay?”
“Oh. Um, I had to check in with my friend. He’s watching my son.”
Apparently, that was not something Neal had been expecting. Then again, he’d barely allowed Eddie to get a word in edgewise.
Neal’s face fell into a deep frown. “You have a son,” he said.
Eddie nodded. “I do. Did my sisters fail to mention their nephew?”
From the look of him it was clear that they had. Because they probably thought that that wasn’t relevant information. They didn’t get it. Christopher needed to be first and foremost and if he was going to start dating, the person he dated needed to not only know about Christopher but also be okay with Eddie having a son — a special needs child at that.
“They didn’t mention it,” Neal said and took a few bites of his food.
They were both almost close to being done with their entrees and Neal had finally stopped talking incessantly. When their waiter came by asking if they needed anything, it wasn’t even  Eddie that jumped at the chance to get the bill, but Neal who shot Eddie an almost apologetic look.
“I got this,” Neal said when it came. “Don’t worry about it.”
Eddie did not protest. A free dinner was the least he could get out of it. As they were walking out, Eddie took note of all the happy couples deep in conversation or staring into each other’s eyes in a disgustingly loving manner. The restaurant itself was decorated for the holiday with roses everywhere. When they reached the door, Eddie heard someone squeal and when he turned he saw a man drop down to one knee in front of a woman.
“A bit tacky doing it on Valentine’s Day,” Neal said.
“Or romantic,” Eddie said.
When they got outside, Neal turned and looked at him. “We really don’t have anything in common. But this was fun.” He offered up his hand and Eddie shook it.
Neal walked away and Eddie was tempted to call his sisters and tell them off for the two hours he’d wasted at a dinner with someone that he was never going to connect with. But, he didn’t want that aggravation, so instead he headed to where he’d parked his car and then drove straight to Buck’s apartment. He was so exhausted and the only thing that he wanted was to sit down with his son and Buck and maybe watch a movie. The thing he should have been doing in the first place.
—-
They ate while doing the puzzle. Christopher was determined to finish it and he was concentrating so hard but Buck would still sort of nudge him in the right direction. He left pieces that would surely go together right next to each other and pretended not to notice them so that Christopher would instead. It was fun.
“Think we can finish this tonight, Buck?”
“Maybe. I guess it depends on how late your dad is.”
Christopher frowned at that but refocused on the puzzle and Buck just chuckled and put a few pieces together so that maybe they could finish the whole thing by the time that Eddie returned and took Christopher home.
“Bucky, don’t you like my dad?”
“Of course I do. What makes you ask that?” He watched Christopher carefully as he moved pieces around with his fingers.
“Well, if my daddy is going to start dating again...well, why isn’t he on a date with you?” Christopher looked straight at him with his last word and Buck felt like Christopher was seeing right through him.
“I don’t know, buddy. I don’t know. Hey, look, we almost have all of Lady done.”
They were about halfway done when the door to his apartment clicked open. Only Eddie and Maddie had keys to his apartment and Buck didn’t expect Maddie to stop by unless something had gone wrong with Chim. Christopher was distracted by the puzzle but Buck stood up when he saw Eddie walk in.
“Hey,” Buck said and stepped around the puzzle to meet him closer to the door.
Eddie looked tired. “Hey,” he said back and then his lips turned up into a smile. “What are you guys up to?”
“Puzzle,” Buck said. “He’s having fun.”
“At least you guys had a good night tonight.”
Buck tried to hide how elated he was to hear that. “Not a good night for you?”
Eddie chuckled. “Yeah, Buck, you could say that. I, um, I went on a date tonight.”
“I sort of figured. Plus, Christopher told me.”
Eddie shook his head but he was smiling. “That kid doesn’t miss a thing. Yeah, my sisters made me go. They’ve been nagging me for ages and then they set this up and didn’t even tell me until the day I asked if you could watch Christopher. He was kind of a dick, to be honest.”
Buck felt lighter, suddenly. Happier. And then the words caught up with him. “He,” he said.
“Uh...yeah. Buck, you know I’m bi, right?”
Buck shook his head. “No, actually. I didn’t.”
“Oh,” Eddie said and shuffled awkwardly. “Well, I am.”
“Me too,” Buck said and because he didn’t know if he could watch Eddie’s reaction he turned and walked back to Christopher. “How’s it going, buddy?”
“Good,” Christopher said.
“Your dad is here,” Buck told him.
Christopher looked up and towards Eddie who had followed them. “Hi, daddy. We’re doing a puzzle.”
“I can see that, son,” Eddie said.
“Do we have to go yet?”
Eddie looked towards Buck and Buck shrugged. He would keep them forever if that was an option. “You can stay. If you’re hungry we still have some pizza.”
“The one thing I got out of it was a free dinner,” Eddie said.
“Oh. Um, beer?”
“That, I’ll take you up on. Kinda need that after tonight.”
When he came back with two beers, Eddie had dropped to help Christopher with the puzzle and Buck sat down to join them. Chris was showing Eddie everything they’d already put together. Eddie was sort of just moving pieces around rather than trying to find anything that fit and Buck could tell that he was distracted.
“Penny for your thought?”
“You know, in this economy, it may have gone up to a dime.”
Buck chuckled. “Dude, avoidant much?”
“How about we just work on the puzzle,” Eddie said.
For a while they just focused on that. Buck was still trying to help Christopher put pieces together so mostly he was searching for anything that might help him, his hands going all over the puzzle pieces and bumping into Eddie’s from time to time. Eddie sort of froze every time their fingers touched.
“All night, I just kept wishing I had just stayed here,” Eddie said. “Or at home. Anywhere but on that date.”
Buck didn’t know how to respond to that. He put a few pieces together and passed them towards Christopher. They were very nearly done with the whole thing.
“It was stupid,” Eddie said. “I don’t even...I’m not interested in finding someone new. But my sisters are just the worst and saying no to them just makes things even worse.”
Buck had no idea how much time passed while they worked on the puzzle but they finished the whole thing eventually. Christopher did the last ten pieces all on his own, giggling while he did it because he was just such a happy kid. When it was done, Buck expected Eddie to gather up Christopher and his things and be on his way but instead he moved over to the couch after grabbing a second beer and Christopher busied himself admiring his puzzle but Buck walked over to sit with Eddie.
“I really should have tried to get out of tonight. My sisters...they just like to meddle and they think me dating will make me happy or some nonsense. Abuela says they can’t leave anything alone. My love life being one of those things.”
Buck swallowed. “Well, don’t you want to find someone. Date...do all of that?”
Eddie shrugged his shoulders and he took a swig of his beer. “I have everything I need already.”
“Christopher,” Buck said.
Eddie nodded and he took a breath before he set down the beer bottle at his feet and he leaned a bit closer to Buck. Buck had no idea what was happening or why.
“And you,” Eddie said.
“And me?”
Eddie sort of nodded. “All I wanted to do today was spend the day with you. Christopher and you. If they hadn’t gotten me this fail of a date I...well, I would have wanted to do something with you tonight. Anything.”
As friends. Eddie probably meant that he’d wanted to spend the night with him as friends and Buck wanted that too even if he wanted something more too.
“Me too,” Buck said. He looked towards Christopher but he had to look back at Eddie when Eddie placed a hand on his knee.
—-
Eddie hadn’t known that he was going to say anything to Buck about his feelings when he first arrived at Buck’s apartment and he let himself in, but then his hand kept touching Buck’s and then they were sitting on Buck’s couch and Buck was right there and Eddie really didn’t want to leave without making it clear that Buck was important to him and not just as his friend.
“I don’t want to go on any dates unless it’s with you,” Eddie said.
Buck gasped and his gaze landed on where Eddie had placed his hand on Buck’s knee.
“You — you wanted to date me?” Buck asked.
Buck gave nothing away in the way he was looking at him but he wasn’t pushing Eddie away or telling him off so Eddie figured that was a good sign.
Eddie grabbed his hand. “I want everything with you,” he said and his own courage surprised him. “I was on that date and I wanted to be here. I mentioned Christopher to him and the thought of me having a child repulsed him. He wasn’t you. No one else is and no one will compare. I want you to be my Valentine. This year and next year and the year after that. No one else.”
Buck looked shocked but his hand was gripping Eddie’s hand back and his lips were twitching into a smile.
“Buck?”
Buck surged forward, breaching the space between them and he kissed Eddie, pressing his lips against Eddie’s and lifting a hand to hold his jaw and Eddie just melted into him. Buck was kissing him, he was right there, his nose brushing against’s Eddie’s cheek and his fingers just lightly moving against his jaw and it was perfect. It was more than Eddie had expected.
“I love you,” Buck whispered against his lips when he pulled back.
—-
They were kissing. Eddie and he were kissing. His mind was blown and thought was barely possible past trying to forever remember the way that Eddie’s lips felt on his or how Eddie’s hand had landed on his bicep and Eddie just kept moving it up and down in a caress. Eddie nipped at his lips and Buck gasped as their tongues met and Buck couldn’t think anymore. It was impossible to when Eddie was right there and they were kissing, kissing, kissing…
Buck couldn’t help but whine when Eddie pulled back, dotting Buck’s lips with a few chaste pecks after before pressing their foreheads together.
“Love you too, Buck. This should have been my night all along. Spending it with you,” Eddie said.
“This is not the worst Valentine’s Day I’ve ever had,” Buck said.
“Not by far,” Eddie said.
There was a lot to discuss still but none of that mattered when they were sitting so close together and they had been kissing just moments before. For Buck, something as simple as a kiss had never been much of a big deal but this kiss mattered. It being Eddie mattered. It made all the difference.
“I would keep kissing you except—” Eddie motioned towards where Chris was still looking over the puzzle.
Buck chuckled. He kissed Eddie’s cheek, hand lifting up from his jaw to caress Eddie’s forehead. Eddie sighed.
“How about we put on a movie? If you want, you can change into something more comfortable. You know where my clothes are.”
“Okay. I’ll be right back, then.”
“Daddy, where are you going?”
Buck had to get himself back together. Eddie seemed to say something to Chris and then he was heading up the stairs.
“Hey, buddy, you wanna help me get some popcorn? We’re going to watch a movie,” Buck said and Christopher scrambled to his feet and followed Buck to the kitchen.
“Hey, Buck,” Christopher said while Buck got a bag of microwave popcorn out of a cabinet.
“Yeah?”
“I told you that you and daddy belonged together.”
“You know, kid, you’re pretty smart.”
“I know,” Christopher said.
Buck couldn’t help but laugh. He tasked Christopher with listening to the kernels popping while he grabbed a bowl.
When Eddie got back, they had already opened the bag and dumped the popcorn into the bowl and Buck helped Christopher carry it over to the couch.
“You look really good in my clothes, so you know,” Buck said when he was passing by Eddie.
“Ah, so that was your motive,” Eddie said.
“That, or I just want to keep you here forever,” Buck said.
Eddie grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the living room. “You had only to ask for. I want you forever too.”
“Best Valentine’s Day ever,” Buck said.
“Yeah!” Christopher said from the couch and Buck high fived him.
Eddie chuckled but he was nodding along.
“Does this mean that you two are dating now?” Christopher asked.
Buck chuckled and Eddie could just smile and grin. “Yeah, that’s exactly what this is.”
“But I can still hang out with Buck too, right?”
Buck kissed the top of Christopher’s head. “Kiddo, I think I’m going to be around even more now. You’re going to be sick of me.”
“Never.”
“No?”
“Nope. Not ever. You’re stuck with us now, Buck,” Eddie said.
“And next time your sisters try to set you up on a blind date, you can just tell them you have a boyfriend,” Buck said.
Eddie chuckled. “Should have done that in the first place.”
Buck laughed. “That could have been a regularly cliche fake dating situation. Might have ended in the same place.”
They were looking at each other over Christopher’s head and Eddie reached over and placed a hand on Buck’s cheek. “We would have found a way to this one way or another.”
