Buddha to his disciples, mini-series (7)
To Anuruddha (Ref) - Pursuit of happiness
Anuruddha is listed as one of the 10 great disciples, and was a top master of clairvoyance also the practice of the four foundations of mindfulness (satipatthana: Ref2).
Anuruddha was a blind disciple of the Buddha. He was at the Jetabana (one of the holy places where the Buddha preached) and was trying to sew the frayed ends of his robe. But being blind, he could not thread the needle. “Is there anyone who wants to thread the needle for me and make merit?” He called out.
The Buddha responded. Anuruddha said, "The Venerable one no longer needs to make merit." But Buddha said.
“There is no limit to so much in the pursuit of dāna (any form of giving), forbearance, truth and happiness.” - Buddha (Ekottarika-āgama 31

On Teachers, Maturation, and Debt
It’s a sad fact
that so few teachers
ever come to know their reach
or to see the maturation of their work;
they give of themselves
in service of a vision
known only to hope
to trust and to need;
perhaps they too recall
coming up short
and lately getting it together
thereby fueling their resolve;
how else could such a mission
of endless sewing without harvest
ever come into being
but by gratitude by knowing and debt?

Welcome to The Journey to the West (西游记) Daily!
You are about to beging a reading journey to get the hidden Buddhist texts accompanied by the monk Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Sha Wujing, Zhu Bajie and Bai Long Ma.
To beging this journey you must subscribe to the newsletter, which you will find at https://journeytothewestdaily.substack.com/. You wil receive your first email this week, welcoming you and sharing information about what's to come and what I will include in the emails.
However, beforehand I want to tell you already that you won't receive a daily email, despite the name of the newsletter. The chapters are dense and full of references to folklore or religion references that you might be unfamiliar with, so you will receive an email every 2 or 3 days maximum.
If this is the first time that you hear about this newsletter and you don't know what Journey to the West is...
The classical Chinese novel Journey to the West is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled to the "Western Regions" (Central Asia and India) to obtain Buddhist sūtras (sacred texts) and returned after many trials and much suffering. Gautama Buddha gives this task to the monk, whose name in the novel is Tang Sanzang, and provides him with three protectors who agree to help him as an atonement for their sins. These disciples are the Monkey King, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, together with a dragon prince who acts as the monk's steed, a white horse. The group of pilgrims journey towards enlightenment by the power and virtue of cooperation.
The novel is perfect for the epistolary format, since it's is divided in different and disconnected adventures, so you don't have to always remember what happened in the previous chapter to read the next!
We'll be reading Anthony C. Yu's translation since it is the first unabridged version that we have available in English. It is about 100 chapters long.
As I said, you will receive a first email as soon as you subscribe and an introductory email in a few days. Please, share this post so more people can read along. Use the hashtag #jttwdaily if you want to comment your impressions. I'll share the most important dates soon.
May the Buddha help you in your endeavours.

Sorry don't mind me, just reblogging this mostly to act as a bookmark for me to reread later because it's very insightful and my ADHD doesn't do great with long texts unless I'm committed to the task fsdf
Also just wanted to also write down some thoughts I got when reading through this (mostly for myself in case I forget them later lol)
I think you're absolutely on the money w/ everything in your post, but especially that last thought; i.e. the relics being a reflection of their corresponding maiden in the current story.
Like, yeah, I always found it strange how the relics didn't align w/ what we (the audience) would perceive to be the rational corresponding season/maiden (i.e. spring=creation; summer=choice; fall=knowledge; winter=destruction) and that they actually appeared to be more arbitrary/random in nature??
I mean, like you've said, the maiden mythos/fairytale supports the audience's initial view of the 'correct' order, but then instead we have spring=knowledge; summer=destruction; fall=choice; winter=creation, which seems out of place.
Until you look at the current Maidens and their actions/motives/narratives.
(these are just basic ramblings/thoughts and not super in depth, so forgive me fsdff. also apologies if you've touched on this before in a previous post or s/t)
First you've got our Fall Maiden and Choice, Cinder.
Girl has made so many spicy choices; some resulting in favourable outcomes, many not so much fsdf
— She willingly defies Salem's orders/plans in want of her own desires i.e. going after Winter maiden powers
— She killed Watts (which while yes, his usefulness at the end of the Atlas Arc kinda ran its course, I'm sure Salem might beg to differ, or at least not appreciate Cinder killing her followers w/o her say so)
— She also lied to Salem about Ruby being killed by Neo + about RWBY using the lamp (though we know she more than likely saw through that fsdf)
(also, yes she isn't a Maiden, but Pyrrha was forced to make The Choice™ and I think that is also vital evidence/fuel for this theory fsdf)
Then you have the Spring Maiden and Knowledge, Raven.
— She tells Yang in V5 to keep asking questions, to question everything about Ozpin, etc.
— She clearly knows what happened to Summer Rose and the previous Spring Maiden, and that knowledge has made her fearful as all heck, forcing her to go into hiding.
Then you have our Winter Maidens and Creation, Penny and Winter.
— Penny is literally created 3 times. Twice in robot form/s, then lastly as a human. She is a Creation™ and also embodies the theme of spring/creation most. i.e. youthful, naive, etc
— The obvious Winter comparison is the Scheme family semblance of summoning. She also sees Penny transference of the Maiden power as a gift, which I see as also kind of aligning w/ 'creation'. Kinda pulling at straws there, but I'm sure there's something I'm missing fsdf
Then we have Summer and Destruction, ????
— while we don't know who the Summer Maiden is, I have a sneaking suspicion they're going to be connected to destruction in some form, whether they do some destruction in their past and that has made them fearful of their powers or something along those lines, or that they will be destructive in the future volume, whenever it is released.
I am so excited for V10 and Vacuo, etc and really hope RWBY Beyond helps quell my anxiety and anguish that it may be the last RWBY content we get for some time 🥲
Read your post on the relics and I did not pay any attention to the chains until you brought it up.
I remember seeing a theory that the sword will essentially be Excalibur and the spirit inside will essentially be the lady of the lake. Her name in Arthurian lore is either Vivian or Nimue.
Also have you noticed that the environments in the vaults is the season AFTER the corresponding maiden’s? The spring maiden’s vault had a hot desert (summer) and the winter maiden’s vault had a grassy field (spring). Which if the sword does turn out to be Excalibur, then the summer maiden’s vault might end up looking like a pond surrounded by trees with red-orange-yellow leaves.
Then imagine if the fall maiden’s vault looks like a snowy forest, just like Ruby was walking through in the red trailer.
kinda of two minds on the sword-as-excalibur thing because, while it does seem like the obvious pull and it is where i landed when i first started mulling over the sword and the crown for the purposes of fanfic (which is something of a complicating factor here, in that i have a pair of full-blown OCs and i gotta be real clear to myself on the distinction between "this is lore i assembled out of canonical crumbs to suit my fanfic" and "this is a theory i have about what's going on in canon," particularly when the two overlap significantly, which in this case they do)… well, rwby doesn't often go for the obvious pull. and jinn isn't an allusion to arthurian myth, so there's not exactly a pattern here, ya know?
the thread of imprisonment linking the genie in the lamp to merlin in the tree might be a pattern, or a coincidence, but as far as speculation goes i think “mythical characters for whom being trapped is a notable theme/event” is probably a category worth taking into consideration.
(for what it’s worth: the pulls i made for the aforementioned OCs were loki [sword] and prometheus [crown], and while obviously constructing OCs is a WHOLE other ballgame, on the most basic level of possible allusions they do check the “imprisonment” box and hold water if refracted through the lens of “spirit of destruction/choice,” so it’s like. i wouldn’t be SURPRISED? if rwby also went there. prometheus in particular feels like a solid candidate for the spirit for the crown because, well. something about choice and stealing fire from gods. and cinder lmfao.)
and oh ho ho i have a... theory? a thought ? about the interiors of the vaults. because it's, well, arbitrary. the maidens all have the same pool of general elemental powers. likewise the relics don't just lack any clear reason for their associations with the season of their respective maiden— they strike me as deliberately flouting the associations you might expect them to have based on the common cultural associations the four seasons have. like:
spring - the planting, the world thawing after winter = creation summer - a time of growth, freedom, maturation = choice fall - harvest time, preparation for winter = knowledge winter - cold, dark, symbolically everything 'dies' = destruction.
yeah? and where it gets even weirder is that the symbolic 'lesson' of each sister/season in the canonical fairytale describing the origins of the maidens themselves also fits much more naturally into the spring-creation, summer-choice, fall-knowledge, and winter-destruction schema:
spring plants a garden and teaches the hermit to tend to it; "life returned to the tired hermit and the forest, which flourished and became green and lush." creation, right?
summer dances and teases and invites the hermit out of his shell, reminding him of the possibility of joy and freedom. he learns not to limit himself to passive observance of the world and to instead takes an active part in it. that's choice!
fall advises the hermit to let go of his misconceptions about himself and his life and see himself clearly at last; he "realized that Fall was right" and eventually achieved a fuller understanding of himself. knowledge!
and winter—who arrived first, encountering the hermit at the height of his isolation, taught him to reflect and meditate until he found serenity and a renewed sense of purpose—in a sense, transforming his metaphorical 'death' into a period of rest or hibernation until his frozen solitude began to thaw. destruction, before the creative energy of spring entered his life.
and yet:
spring maiden = the maiden of knowledge summer maiden = maiden of destruction fall maiden = maiden of choice winter maiden = maiden of creation
why?
(the important thing to keep in mind here, i think, is that rwby has never presented these associations as a natural or intrinsic quality. the maiden-season-relic connection only exists, in-universe, because ozma set it up that way.)
now consider that—as you said—the two vaults we've gotten a look at so far don't line up with the seasons they're 'supposed' to have, with winter's vault [creation] being lush and green inside and spring's vault [knowledge] being a barren desert. so we've got this winter->spring, spring->summer pattern going on, and if that holds we should expect summer's vault [destruction] to be evocative of autumn and fall's vault [choice] to be evocative of winter.
BUT. i think—because of the arbitrariness of the seasonal associations in and of themselves, and because those associations are explicitly a social construct, and because if we follow the seasonal associations the plot has gone fall->spring->winter->summer and that’s um, not right, and i think it’s deliberately not right—there may be something different entirely going on.
namely, the relics exist in two different sets of pairs. right? we've got destruction+knowledge and creation+choice—the pairs given to humanity by the two brother gods. and we've (maybe) also got creation+knowledge and destruction+choice—the complementary power pairs, with the lamp able to eliminate (or at least mitigate) the risks of using the staff and (maybe) the crown and the sword being similar. [the world of remnant episode pertaining to the great war makes a heavy visual implication that ozma used the crown of choice in tandem with the sword of destruction, is where i'm getting that.]
moreover, the four relics symbolically [and perhaps literally] represent the four essential qualities that, together, define what humanity IS: creation AND destruction AND knowledge AND choice.
not four individual, separate magical artifacts. it's a set. we know there's a way to combine them into one thing that will summon the brothers back to remnant, and with the limited information we have now about how they work mechanically it seems very much like they are intended to be used together.
so: the vault with the lamp of knowledge inside it. what does it look like, on the inside? a desert.
knowledge was one of the gifts given to humanity by the god of darkness; the other was destruction. and where is the sword of destruction locked away? the desert of vacuo.
likewise, the staff of creation? hidden in a vault filled with green, grassy meadows. very much like the landscape of vale. where the crown of choice is hidden—and if i'm right about precisely where the crown's vault is hidden, namely the circular ruins where beacon academy's initiation is conducted, the crown is in fact hidden directly under a large, grassy meadow!
further: the vault doors we've seen echo the color scheme of the relics they protect. removing a relic from the vault destroys the doors, which to me suggests that the relics themselves might be the 'anchor' that sustains the vaults themselves—we don't really know enough about how magic works mechanically to say for sure that an 'anchor' is truly necessary, but cinder's use of the staff in v8 demonstrated that if you directly use a relic to create a portal to another realm, you cannot then destroy those portals until the relic has been removed from the 'interior' realm. the vaults were created by some other means, but the same basic principle of linking the existence of the vault to the presence of the relic inside it could very well still apply.
aaand if the vaults are materially connected to the relics in some way—if the presence of the relics in the vaults is somehow providing the energy necessary to maintain them, like plugging in some kind of magical battery?—then... it's not that much of a leap to wonder if maybe the vault interiors symbolically reflect, or are influenced by, the location of that relic's missing pair.
especially in light of the fact that: 1. the nature of the spirits inside the relics is very humanlike, with both jinn and ambrosius clearly being emotional, fully sapient beings, and 2. it rains in the ever after when ruby starts to cry.
[my secondary theory here is that—well. the god of light says explicitly that modern humans do not have the divine blessings given to their predecessors, and while mechanically that seems to mean "they don't have magic," metaphysically it's not... entirely implausible that for ancient humans, "creation, destruction, knowledge, and choice" weren't abstract capabilities but rather actual. literal gifts, something that materially, measurably existed in the human soul, were the source of magical abilities, and were taken away when the gods left. (consider the four larger orbs of energy salem conjures when she's fidgeting with her magic at the beginning of lost fable, which are conspicuously missing when her daughter does the same trick later on.)
ozpin's explanation of the maidens is that he "divided his magic" somehow and his "remaining" magic is now dwindling, but the thing about that is magical power doesn't really... seem to be a limited resource in the way that aura is? we've yet to see anyone with magic 'run out' like people run out of aura. even ozpin seems to be fairly cavalier in his usage of magic—he's cautious of giving it away, and it's not the first thing he turns to in a fight, but he's never hesitated to make full use of his own power when the situation calls for it.
i've been thinking that maybe?? what he actually did with the maidens was give them each one of the divine blessings. like literally, removed the Quantifiable Gift Of Creation from his own soul and gave it to winter, and so on, leaving himself with the metaphysical capacity for these qualities—because that can't be taken away, just as the gods couldn't truly obliterate humankind—but giving up the limitless energy source of the blessings themselves; ergo, his magic is 'dwindling' in the sense that he has to use aura to fuel it now.
this does leave the question of how the hell he gave the branwens shapeshifting abilities, but considering salem seems to have given cinder the ability to control grimm long before she got the maiden powers... maybe folks with magical abilities can just do that? share specific skills? and what makes the maidens so uniquely powerful is that they didn't get specific skills, they got the power source.
anyway all that to say i do wonder if maybe 'seasons' are just an arbitrary smokescreen ozma fabricated and the maidens are literally rather than symbolically the maidens of choice, creation, knowledge, and destruction, with the relic vaults each being linked to the maiden with the matching blessing.]

"Get your dirty hands off me! LET GO OF ME!"
"Listen Brother! We must act with respect! We have a lady in our hands!"
The two yaoguais kept on laughing while they were dragging you somewhere, far away from your friend and protector.
Everything happened so fast that you couldn't register the events: the Destined One, and you had to head to the location of the second relic, which you knew was in this desert. It seems easy at first; you thought that you just needed to be as careful as the last time, but something went wrong!
How could you not notice those scouts?! Maybe they were more used to the state of the place; maybe the dust covered the smell for your friend; what you know Is that in a couple of minutes your monkey was now on the ground, his chest puerced with arrows, agonizing yes, but still alive? You tried to help him; take the gourd that you carried with you with your healing wine, but before that, those rats had already captured you. You kept on struggling and fighting as much as you could, but instead they have other plans for you.
"Our second prince will love this snack! I heard that this one is a really good catch."
"Ah! Please! Maybe he'll give us a bite!"
They were planning to give you fkr lunch to their prince.
If it was them or him, you didn't care; what you did care was to survive and help your monkey out of that mess.
You were so focused on trying to break free from care where they were dragging you, but you started to think that it must have been an indoor when the scorching sun wasn't burning your head anymore.
It looked like a cave, maybe a temple inside the mountain based on the carvings on the walls. Columns made of pure stone, stalagmites, and stalactites decorated with sacred figures and prayers, commemorative candles near statues of Buddha and his disciples.
The ones that built the city must have used the caves in order to obtain more spaces, maybe?
You didn't get enough chance to ask since the two rats didn't show any kindness when they literally threw you on the ground.
"Shouldn't we... I don't know...cook her or something?"
"Ah! The prince and the king live their food fresh and squirmy! Now let's go; he doesn't like being seen while he eats."
And while you were Just pick up yourself from the ground, you Heard their soft and fast footsteps, leaving you in this new side of the cave. There were objects, quite a lot even, all of them around, like some small mountains of trinckets and stuff.
Furniture was around, but those were so damaged and old that you questioned if someone could even use it like that. On the walls of the cave, someone had put some decoration—canvases that had almost lost all of their colors, rusted weapons that were long lost—lost the care that they used to, for the exception of a scary giant Chui that was resting on the ground, ready to be picked.
Whoever was able to hold it must have been a quite herculean creature.
There was such a short source of light, coming from one hole in the ceiling of the wall and...from the way they took you in! There was no door, no bars, nothing!
You didn't want to waste anymore time, and so you sprinted in the same direction that the two rats had left you, until a rumble on your feet almost tripped you for the second time.
There was another, then another one.
Footstep, something big was walking towards you.
Two giant feet, covered in fur and some claws that you swear could rip apart your flesh, incased you. The armor was old and marred but still held some remembrance of his rank and position in his kingdom.
A large and long tail and a pointy mout... it was a rat, but it was grotesquely big. His yellow eyes scrutinized you, while his nose was sniffing the air in your direction.
Without thinking twice, you bolted so fast to escape from that thing, but you didn't get enough time since he was fast enough to grab you from your ankle and raise you up like an old ragged doll. You tried to kick it, scratch it, and try to punch it, but he didn't budge a little; it was like a mosquito bite for him.
"LET ME GO! STOP!"
Despite your plea, he just stood there, looking at you and sniffing more closely. A few of your hair sucked in his nostrils, and so I kept it up for a few more seconds. You couldn't see it, but it seemed... curious. He decided to change your position, holding you by your waist, trying to see you better from another angle.
You were beyond terrorized; from near, he was even worse! AND THAT SMELL! You shivered in his grasp, too afraid to move another punch or kick while he studied you. He finally stopped moving when your face hit a direct ray of sunlight from the hole in the ceiling. You gasped, tried to cover yourself, and then...the ground.
He didn't tossed you at all; he just putted you down. It was incredible to notice that you didn't even feel any pain in your abdomen from where he had grasped you. At that point, he just started to emit something that reminded you of some kind of giggle, a few snorts, and he looked...excited? He trotted to one of the small trinkets stacked near the bed that you assumed was his own. starting to move things around.
He was distracted. That was your chance! You slowly start to pick it up from where you left it to get out from there, when you felt again his enormous hand on your back, grasping the back of your shirt from behind, rising you up again like a kitten.
"Stop it! I don't-"
And then, again, you were seated...in front of what once was maybe a nice tea set. His throat was emitting a strange sound while he started a small fire and put a big iron pot of water on it. He was...humming...while making tea? And there were two pairs of small cups, old and dusty, and one was for you?
You didn't muttered a word, preferring to stare at that strange creature that was now putting some dried herbs; you wondered if it was even tea in the pot, still very small for something of his size.
"Wha...what are...you doing?"
"Making tea...for the guest!"
Okay, now it was a really good moment to freak out; he thought you were a guest?! HIS GUEST?!
"I thought you were supposed to..."
You held your tongue, reminding him about the fact that you were lunch for him; it may be quite a problem. You tried another time to move away, but suddlenly got back in place when some kind of conckut was versed in your cup. A few big drops spilled; he wasn't so versatile in this.
And then he looked at you. No, staring. He was there, staring at you, waiting for a response, and you looked at the staff in your cup. Imagine the food infection that it would cause. You kept on staring at it, trying to come up with every possible excuse to avoid the ingestion of the brooth, but three meters Yaogauis don't leave room for so many options. You gulped the content of the cup, trying to hold the near vomit coniate.
",..Gee...thanks...that was...so nice! .....Thanks..."
Oh was... please, like a lot. He started to clap, happy, drinking directly from the pot.
After that, he started again to act strangely. But this time it wasn't about taking care of the guest, but just...pile up staff...on you.
He made sure that you were comfortable, as much as you were, but his actions reminded you of a child that is showing you staff. At some point he even tried to put a necklace around your neck, but your sudden shriek made him desist, only for him to put the garmet in your hand. It was an old and broken jade pearl necklace; maybe there was a pendant in the middle since the space, but it was long gone. The small gems were broken or ruined, but it seemed to be once a really nice piece of jewelry.
At some point, your fear just became boredom and hassle, especially when he kept on showing you staff. At some point, what really caught your eye was a rectangular piece of wood that had previously fallen from one of the piles next to you. Covered in dust and mud, it must have seen better time, but, on the front, something was still visible: it was a piece of paper plastered with something on the wood, and, on it, three figures standing, one sitting in the center of it. The three standing figures seemed young, each of them with something to distinguish them from each other, the one sitting on a small chair wearing instead some regal robes.
"Ah, a painting...why did you keep it with you? Do you like drawing?"
The rat suddenly stopped, pointing his finger towards you and the draw.
"Me! Me and brothers! And my papa too! You found it, so good."
He seemed delighted, clapping his hands and making again those strange sounds. You, instead, cannot stop looking at the drawing confused. Him? Wait...one of them had a Chui next to him, and some traits, by using a lot of imagination, made him similar to your gaoler.
"Wait...this is you? You are him?!"
You pointed the figure, and he just...nodded, vigurusly.
"But," you continued, "how?! How it happened?! You were a man! How did you become a... Yaoguai?"
You said, avoiding using the word rat, opting to not make remarks on his looks further.
"Master!" He just chirped "Master! He did it! Everyone rats now! Little brother left, searching for help for turning in rats...still missing...older brother...not so good...he acts violent...daddy like master! So I follow too! ....But not like, like, daddy."
"Master?...what master?"
"Sage! Wind sage!"
"Hold on, the...the yellow wind sage did this to you?" He kept on nodding; this time it was slower than before; maybe it was something that he wasn't proud of?
"Did it hurt you? I mean,. you didn't have a tail before. It was painful. I'm...sorry..." Your tone was softer this time, wondering how much pain that poor creature must have endured all this time. He seemed to be remembering his old life as a man; maybe, by having you in, he tried to recreate some old habits of him? Did you remind him of someone that he had lost? He didn't even try to eat you at all; he was just being nice.
He kept on looking at you, sensing the change in the room after this knowledge, and he just...poke you. You looked at him, raising an eyebrow. Was he trying to cheer you up?
"Even rat, help Daddy! Master will be back, Daddy happy, and finally Daddy will notice my work! Me protect people from tigers! Not many thanks, but still do!"
And now you felt worse! How could someone say so casually that their father doesn't give them enough credits?! He was just a big guy. Yaogaus truly were strange, from some friendly horses to a rat prince.
"I'm sorry to know that you have to endure all of this... But, you know, me and my friend, we're searching for AH!"
Trying to understand this creature, trying to get a chance to flee, and trying to not faint for fear made you forget the first reason why you were there in the first place. You rose from your spot, causing him to back away in surprise.
"The relic! The wind sage...MONKEY!"
You put down the cup; how could you stay here taking tea while your friend was somewhere pierced by who knows how many arrows?! You started to move away from there, trying not to fall from the various junk that he had put around you.
"I'm sorry! I need to leave! My friend needs me; I need to help him! I AGH!"
When he grabbed you, this time he was more scared and aprehensive, trying to stop you from your exit.
"No! You must stay! Other kill and eat, I protect and care! You too, nice! You stay!"
The fight that you left before restarted again, this time with much more vigor from you. You won't have let your friend die in that dump place!
"Put me down! I don't want to stay here with you! LET ME GO!"
His attempt to keep you in place resulted in both his giant hands holding you and trying to keep your kicking feet away from his face. He was starting to panic. Why did you have to leave?!
The struggle continued, and both of you did not notice a figure approaching fastly in your direction until you just heard a huge STOMP. The rat started to move around like a drunk man, then collapsed in a huge cloud of dust and sand. This time, you didn't have to taste the ground since two strong arms were ready to capture your fall.
"You look like you were in need of assistance, my Bián huá!"
"...Monkey!"
His furry face welcomed you once you opened your eyes from the fall with a smile and, instinctively, you launched your arms around his neck for an hug. But you remembered his wounds at the last moment.
"AH! I'm sorry! Your wounds!"
"I'm fine! See? Not a scratch!"
He showed you his chest, untouched and without trace of any wounds or arrows.
"But I saw it... Did the healing wine help you?"
"Not exactely. I've found a helping hand that...
Will let you lose your head!"
"...it's strangely specific."
He just laughed it off but regained his seriousness once he heard some moan of pain from the rat Yaogaui in front of him. He let you down, then took back his staff.
"Wait!" He looked at you surprised. "Let's just leave him. You gave him a concussion already. I don't think he'll be a problem soon."
"All right, I don't know what happened here, but you look like you had a blast. Let's move now; more rats will come after the commotion!"
You nodded, but you still looked back at the prince with the same sorry expression from before.
"I'm sorry. It's an urgent matter. I promise to apologize better when we'll take the relic. Thank you!"
And so you and the Destined One left hand in hand the cave, noticing in a rush moment the look of pain in the prince's eyes. You wondered if the pain was for his head or something else.

"If you are not satisfied, you must not remain there. Even if you are satisfied, you must leave. A wise person should not live in a place where one does not perfect one's character. " Words of Buddha's senior disciple (Theragāthā 105)

Buddha to his disciples, mini-series (4)
To Sariputra – Part 3
Sāriputra is regarded as the first chief disciple, and foremost of Buddha's ten great disciples. He is regarded as the 'foremost of the wise’ and sometimes preached on Buddha's behalf. To Sariputra, the Buddha said [Ref2]:
"O Sāriputra, place first priority on wisdom, rejoice in goodness, and overcome various dangers. Endure the discontent of living in remote areas. And endure the following four worries. " 'What shall I eat?' 'Where shall I eat?' 'Last night I had difficulty sleeping,' 'Where shall I sleep today?' The practitioner should overcome these worries." "Get food and clothing randomly to your needs, be content with little, know moderation, do not do as you wish in clothing, be modest in the village, and do not speak harshly when mistreated."
(Sutta Nipata 969~971)

A side-by-side comparison of Nezha's backstory in JTTW and FSYY
(Sth I've been working on for a while, as quick reference material for Nezha's story in the two novels specifically that doesn't go into the broader mythos.)
JTTW's Nezha:
-Born with the characters "Ne/Na" on one hand, and "Zha" on the other
-Has 2 older brothers and 1 younger sister: Jinzha, who worked as a guardian deity and attendant of the Buddha, Mucha, who was the disciple of Guanyin, and Li Zhenying, who's said to be 7 years old in JTTW (Chapter 83).
-There's also Diyong/Lady Earth Flow, the adopted mice sister that had eaten the Buddha's candle, was captured by Li Jing and Nezha, and spared on the Buddha's order.
-She shows up in Chapter 80, as a demoness who kidnapped Tripitaka for the purpose of marriage, and is subsequently recaptured to face celestial judgement.
-Three days after his birth, Nezha went off into an unknown ocean, stepped on a crystal palace and toppled it, and caught a flood dragon to use its tendon as a belt
-After that, Li Jing tried to kill him for being a menace, and Nezha did the "Return his flesh and bones to his parents" thing in anger
-His soul then drifted off to the Buddha's place, who performed the Lotus Resurrection Thing by reciting a mantra
-He then subdued 96 caves of demons, and went after Li Jing to take revenge for the "forced suicide" thing
-Li Jing pleaded to the Buddha for help, who gave him a pagoda with Buddhas sculptured on every level, and told Nezha to call the Buddha (on the pagoda) as his father from now on.
-The weapons he used in his Three-headed Six-Armed Form: The Demon-slaying Sword + Demon-cutting Blade, Demon-binding Rope + Demon-subduing Vajra, Embroidered Ball, Fire Wheel (held in his hand)
FSYY's Nezha:
-Is the reincarnation of Taiyi's oldest disciple, Spirit Pearl/Lingzhu Zi
-Is destined to be the Vanguard of the Zhou army in the upcoming War of the Investiture
-Has 2 brothers: Jinzha, disciple of Wenshu Guangfa Tianzun, and Muzha, disciple of Sage Puxian. (FSYY's quirk of making popular Buddhist deities into Daoist sages in a trenchcoat is at play again.)
-Mother was pregnant with him for three years, gave birth to a ball of flesh
-Jumps out of the ball of flesh when Li Jing cuts it open, wearing his Qiankun Ring as a bracelet, Huntian Sash wrapped around his stomach
-Was immediately taken by Taiyi as a disciple the next day, who told Li Jing that, born in the hour of Chou, Nezha is destined to break 1700 prohibitions against killing
-A 6 ft tall 7-years old (FSYY's sense of scale is really weird, like all old novels)
-Asked to go out and play in the river during summertime, unknowingly created a shockwave in the water with his sash that shook Ao Guang's palace in the East Sea.
-Ao Guang sent a Yaksha to check it out. Nezha sassed the Yaksha, who attacked him in a fury and got insta-killed.
-Ao Guang's soldiers reported the Yaksha's death. Ao Bing overheard the whole thing, asked to go deal with this random brat, and was granted permission by his father.
-Ao Bing rode out of the waves on his steed, and went "Who are you, sassy lost child, and did you just kill my Yaksha?!" And Nezha was like "Yeah, so what? Talk shit, get hit."
-Ao Bing charged Nezha with his weapon in a fury, got dragged down his steed by the sash, and was promptly bonked on the head by the Qiankun Ring, which reverted him to his dragon form.
-Nezha then pulled out his tendons to make a belt for Li Jing's armor and returned to Chentang Pass. Furious, Ao Guang hurried his way to Li Jing's mansion and accused him for the whole multiple homicide thing.
-Li Jing's first reaction was "My kid's only 7 and never goes out of the door, he can't possibly kill yours!" Then, when he indeed asked Nezha, Nezha flat-out admits it and went out to meet Ao Guang like "Yeah, sorry, doesn't know that's your kid. Anyways, here's his tendons, undamaged and untouched."
-Ao Guang, unsurprisingly, did not take it well and stormed off to press charges to the JE. Faced with his angry crying parents, Nezha also knew he had fucked up, and went to his master Taiyi for help.
-Taiyi's advice? Go ambush the dragon king on his way to complain to the JE and beat him up, mobster-style. Which Nezha promptly did, forcing Ao Guang to turn into a little snake and stay in his sleeves, to be carried back to Chentang Pass.
-The beatdown does not convince Ao Guang not to press charges. In fact, he said he'd get the other dragon kings of the Four Seas to press charges together. Li Jing raged at Nezha again, who assured him that it was alright, like, his master said he was destined to assist some Sage King and stuff.
-He then wandered into the back garden, picked up the Qiankun Bow and Sky-shaking Arrows of the Yellow Emperor that were, uh, just kept there in the family attic, and decided to do some archery practice.
-Sadly, he didn't know how far that arrow would go. It flew all the way to the White Bone Cave, abode of Lady Shiji the Rock Demoness, and went straight through the throat of one of her two disciples, the Verdant Cloud Boy.
-Since Li Jing also carved his name onto the arrow (…), Lady Shiji headed immediately to his place and whisked him away with her treasure, the Eight Trigrams Hankerchief.
-At her place, Li Jing pleaded that he really didn't do it, since the Qiankun Bow was a mystical ancient weapon no one could use in a long, long time, and Shiji released him back to Chentang Pass to find the true culprit. At which point he put two and two together, found out it was Nezha again, and told him to go answer to Shiji together with him.
-Nezha, who did not think this was his fault, smacked Shiji's other disciple, the Colored Cloud Boy on the head with his Qiankun Ring, when he came out of the cave on his master's orders. Shiji was even less happy about that, took his weapons away with a single swipe of her sleeves, then chased him all the way to Taiyi's place.
-At which point Taiyi was like "Well, if you want Nezha to pay for his crimes, how about we go to the Jade Emptiness Palace together and let my master (Yuanshi Tianzun) sort it out?" Shiji refused, stating that he was just using his master's authority to lord over her and unfairly protect his disciple.
-Taiyi then revealed the Chan-Jie division that would later become a huge thing in the War of Investiture, and basically went "Sorry that your student died in Nezha's archery accident, Lady Shiji, but it is literally Fated to Happen, which means you totally shouldn't be mad at me or him."
-Shiji did not buy that explanation at all, and they fought. Taiyi blocked her hankerchief when she tried to use it, then threw the Nine Fire Dragon Bell Cover over her head, burning her to death and reverting her to her true form——a rock.
-Taiyi then informed Nezha that with JE's permission, Ao Guang had gathered the other dragon kings to go after Nezha's parents. Nezha begged him to save them, and his advice was...well, "kill yourself and the dragon kings will let them go". Literally.
-So Nezha did, which was very graphically described in the novel, after which his soul drifted off to Taiyi's place.
-Taiyi told him to go to his mother and tell her to build a temple for him at Mt. Cuiping. He did, and Lady Yin woke up from her dream crying.
-Upon learning the reason why, Li Jing yelled at her for crying after Nezha had brought all these troubles upon their family. Nezha's soul then haunted her in her dreams for a week or so, until she finally relented and built him a temple in secret.
-Half a year later, Li Jing found out about the temple while Nezha's soul was out and away for some unknown reasons. In a fit of rage, he smashed Nezha's statue and burned the temple down (I talk about how this resembles the destruction of 淫祠, illicit cults in IRL history here).
-Nezha returned to his temple only to find it in ruins, at which point he went back to Taiyi, who did the Lotus Resurrection thing and gave him back his weapons, together with a new spear, the Wind-Fire Wheels and a golden brick.
-Nezha immediately rushed back to Chentang Pass to take revenge, stating that after the whole "returning his flesh and blood" thing, they were basically unrelated and didn't owe each other anything, so he was perfectly justified to go after Li Jing for the destruction of his temple.
-They fought. Li Jing, quickly exhausted, turned tail and fled using the Daoist arts of Earth Travel, at which point he ran into Muzha. While they were talking, Nezha caught up with them.
-Muzha was like "How dare you!" and Nezha replied with "Who the hell are you?" Only after Muzha said his name out loud did he recognize his brother and recount the whole story.
-Muzha retorted that "Parents can do no wrong". Nezha pointed out that after his suicide, they were no longer father and son, and told him to stand aside.
-Muzha whipped out his sword to fight him. Concerned that Li Jing might get away in the meantime, Nezha threw his golden brick at Muzha, hitting him in the back and knocking him down.
-The chase continued. Li Jing, knowing that he couldn't run away forever, was ready to commit suicide instead of facing the disgrace of being struck down by his son.
-However, Jinzha's master, Wenshu, suddenly showed up to rescue him. Nezha demanded that Wenshu release Li Jing from his abode, and if he didn't, he'd poke three holes in Wenshu instead.
"And who are you, to make such claims?"
"I am Nezha, disciple of Master Taiyi!"
"Never heard of you. You can throw a tantrum elsewhere, but not here, and if you keep this up, you are in for a spanking."
-Nezha attacked him. In return, Wenshu unleashed his treasure, the Flying Dragon Pillar, tying Nezha onto it. He then summoned Jinzha, handed him a walking stick, and told Jinzha to give him a good whipping.
-Then Taiyi showed up to rescue him, telling Nezha to bow to Wenshu, his Daoist uncle (Context: Taiyi and Wenshu are both among the 12 Immortals of the Chan Sect), and scolded Li Jing a bit for the temple-burning thing.
-Then he told the two to get along and go their separate ways. Nezha was delighted, seeing it as basically a free pass to resume his revenge the moment he was out of his master's sight, and indeed, he did.
-Then Sage Randeng (also of the Chan Sect) showed up, gave Li Jing a buff, and told him to fight Nezha again. Nezha, having witnessed the whole thing and reached an impasse in the fight, attacked Randeng in an attempt to disable the buff.
-Randeng was not happy about this "unprovoked" attack on an innocent bystander, so he dropped a pagoda out of his sleeves and onto Nezha, trapping him inside.
-On Randeng's command, flames ignited inside the pagoda. At last, Nezha pleaded for the sage to release him, under the condition that he'd call Li Jing father (grrrr grrrr) again.
-He was planning to pull a second "resume patricide arc" the moment Randeng left, until the sage gave the pagoda to Li Jing and told them to go back to Chentang Pass and Taiyi's place respectively, to wait until the War of Investiture formally began.
-And they did: Nezha was sent to rescue Huang Feihu during his escape from the Five Passes in Chapter 34, while Li Jing only showed up much later in Chapter 64, to kill a fleeing Luo Xuan after he got all of his fire-based treasures neutralized and taken away by Princess Longji.
-I will not do a full campaign-by-campaign summary of Nezha's performance in the War of Investiture proper, for this post is already long enough.
-The broadest overview: together with his senior Daoist brother Yang Jian, Nezha was one of the biggest powerhouses on the Chan/Zhou side.
-His total kill count in the novel (only counting the named/deified ones) is 15, which is actually more than Yang Jian's (12-13).
-Much like Yang Jian, he was often the one who survived lethal attacks and AOE plague spells while the others were taken out. His lotus body also made him impervious to spells and treasures that work directly on the soul, usually by pulling it out of the body.
-After suffering an injury from the Blood-melting Knife of Yu Hua/his master Yu Yuan, Nezha was given his final power-up at Taiyi's place via three cups of wine and three "fire jujubes", enabling him to transform into his Three-headed, Eight-armed Form.
-At the end of the novel, Nezha, together with Li Jing, Jinzha, Muzha, Yang Jian, Weihu and Lei Zhenzi, became "Sages in Flesh"——which I understood as "a better sort of gods/immortals that don't receive their godhood via death and deification".
-The 6+ weapons he has: Qiankun Ring, Huntian Sash, Fire-tipped Spear, Golden Brick, Wind-Fire Wheel (in its most popular "hot wheels" depiction), Yin-Yang Swords, Nine Fire Dragon Bell Cover

Hiii! I love your writing and I can never get enough Buddha/Shiva content on this app 💜 If it's okay could I ask for some NSFW Buddha with his disciple reader? Maybe he's worried when he sees them talking with other gods and decides to... stake his claim~
Buddha really is territorial and won't share for the world. And there certainly more then one way to make his claim known👀
I may or may not put more yandere in here than I wanted...
I apologize for taking so long once again. Taking a break is like having guests for me. They never know when to finally leave😅
Tumblr media
Buddha's day couldn't have gotten any worse. First he had to have an encounter with Loki the first thing in the morning, only to be followed by a (very unwanted) meeting with Zeus. And while having no sweets what so ever. But he could wait, Y/n always brings him sweets. And it was just about time for their daily meditation session. This always brightens his day... They always brighten his day. His life as a god if he's so bold to say.
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
Entering the garden where they agreed to meet for today, Buddha breathed out a deep sigh. Rubbing the back of his neck to smooth it's soreness. Yet there was a small smile on his lips, after all he's gonna meet them, meet his beloved little apprentice. Heaving another sigh this one more relaxed, more dreamy. He couldn't wait to see them, bringing him sweets with that wide grin of theirs. Seeing them meditate next to him, so close... So vulnerable...
Buddha chuckles under his breath, his eyes lifting to see his dear disciple. Taking a breath to call for them, Buddha stops dead in tracks. His throat closing, the breath he took getting stuck there. Y/n sat there on the fountain edge, looking as bright as ever... With another monk. Laughing loudly, without the care of the world. Grabbing his hand as they lean backwards while laughing. They looked like... Like lovers.
Swallowing the lump in the back of his throat Buddha walks towards them, surprisingly keeping his composure. Stopping right infront of the pair, Y/n greets him happily. "Shaka! Oh look what I brought today! It's from Kintoki-kun." They stand up happily, seemingly forgetting about the monk's presence. Buddha on the other hand was painfully aware of it, but nevertheless he kept his attention on his disciple. Giving them a wide, toothy grin as he takes the candy from their hands. Popping one right into his mouth, Buddha voices his content humming at the taste.
Dragging them by the hand, walking a little too fast for them to follow comfortably. Buddha pulls them into a small room, not really far at all from the gardens entrance. Not bothering to lock the door he lifts Y/n into his arms, pressing them into the wall, his arms keeping them from falling. "What are you doing... You can't do this to me..." Buddha whispers softly into their neck as he presses himself into them so he can keep his hands busy.
The monk in question slowly stood up smiling softly at Y/n. Once Buddha aknowledged him, the monk gave him a respectful bow. Buddha smiled back in response, through he couldn't help the little frown appearing between his eyebrows. So, to avoid any inconveniences, Buddha focused his attention entirely on his little disciple. But as Y/n talked excitedly about whatever, the monk was still there. As if he hasn't noticed any of the signs Buddha sent his way. Plan B it is then...
"Oh no! I forgot to make tea for our session today! Would you come with me dear?" Buddha acted surprised and slightly worried, as is he truly forgot something. He grabbed Y/n's hand not bothering to wait for their response.
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
Not wasting any second Buddha pulls apart Y/n's silky clothes. He huffs and puffs into their neck as he propes them with kisses, grazing his fangs along their sensitive skin. Feeling a shiver run through Y/n, Buddha let's out a breathless moan using one of his hands to unwrap his robes and fish out his painfully hardened member. Once finally bare he swings their legs around his waist positioning himself right at their entrance. Tip leaking with precum rubs in circles around before pushing inside. Y/n's fingers, now entangled in his hair, pulls hard making Buddha groan as he grits his teeth. With one swift motion Buddha rams fully inside Y/n, their back arching, moaning out his name with a surprised little yelp. Not giving Y/n any time to adjust, Buddha sets a brutal pace. He rams into them without mercy unintentionally relieving the build up stress from today.
"You can't make me feel like this. You're my disciple, no one else's..." He breathes deeply, pressing his forehead against theirs, looking into their eyes as he talks. "It makes me little anxious... Seeing you with others like that." His eyebrows quirking upwards as a small whimper forces It's way inbetween his words. Y/n nods, aknowledging his concern. "Yes... I understand... Mh, I'll tell you!.. ah I'll tell you about others then... So! So you won't worry." It was with a little struggle, but Y/n manages to reply. Their honest words and those little breaths and moans breaking their sentence making him smile. "Yes.. thank you. I'd love that~"
His hands slide down to Y/n's waist, pulling althem as close as possible, pushing just as deep in the process. Feeling Y/n's walls fluttering around him, squeezing him for all he's got, Buddha let's go of the whimper threatening to leave. Y/n spine undergoes another violent shiver and soon cumes undone. The brutal pull of their walls, milking him for all his release, this all was enough to make the god crack. His high approached at blinding speed. Buddha stopped his movements, his head falling onto Y/n's shoulder as they both slowly descent from their highs. Buddha could feel their legs softly shake as they tiredly held him close, his warm release seemed to prolong their ecstasy.
Within moments Buddha calmed down, as if nothing ever happened in the first place. His dear disciple on the other hand breathed hard, small buds of sweat formed on their forehead. Smiling softly at them he kissed their cheek affectionately. "Now, how about some meditation hm? It'll help you call down. Can you stand?" He ask as he slowly lowers them to the ground. With a tired little nod they leaned their weight against the wall. Buddha, not waisting a second, put his robes back in place as well as Y/n's and picked them up again. He left the room with them in his arms and returned to the garden. He sat crosslegged on the grass, placing Y/n in his lap and started his meditation. Not caring about the world around them... Or the smell of sex that followed them.

Awww shit, it's popping off fr. More amputee!SY for the spooky month.
Between writing Tumblr stuff and my fics on my mature AO3, my bag's heckin full lmao. But I'm enjoying writing this, so I'll keep doing it hehehehe
Ah, also, I refer to Amitabha Buddha as such instead of his Mandarin Chinese name, Amituofo. So, any ascetic practitioners will be saying "Amitabha" for their greetings and such. Just a head's up.
Prev: Part 5
---
He absolutely planned this. Of course he did.
Never underestimate Binghe.
Shen Yuan sent a withering stare over to the demon emperor, but he seemed to ignore it this time. Though, the blood mites warmed in a spot around his shoulders, the exact spots he sometimes holds and rubs him placatingly. So, the man knew he was giving him the "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" look and asking him to roll with the situation for now.
Ach, fine, fine. Gods forbid he have some peace.
"The first accusation this lord brought against Shen Qingqiu was that he abused me on Qing Jing Peak. Back then, Shen Qingqiu made no plea, and he was found guilty. How do you plea now, my love?"
...Not sure where you're going with this, but as he promised, Shen Yuan would go with the flow.
"Guilty," he answered plainly, with the crowd starting to murmur at his admittance.
"So he says. And yet, the case at the time was missing important context that I, at the time, was too blinded by my own hatred to pursue."
"And what would that be?" Yue Qingyuan asked, his voice low and hands clenched.
"One, that many of the punishments bestowed upon me were quite common for Cang Qiong Sect."
Immediately, many demons expressed outrage, griping about how they were called cruel for their disciplinary actions when the cultivators were no different. Some of the cultivators in attendance, sensing blood in the water, also began yelling, denying that their sect would ever do something like that.
Some, of course, still sided with Cang Qiong. And amongst the demons, a few were quiet, perhaps thinking that what Binghe suffered through hadn't been that serious.
Yue Qingyuan pressed his lips tightly together, not saying anything in response. The Zui Xian Peak lord, seeing this, did not have the same restraint.
"Surely you jest! Cang Qiong Sect does not abuse our disciples!"
Luo Binghe smiled, happy for the man to have taken the bait.
"Is that so? Then, this lord presumes whipping was not practiced on any peak other than Qing Jing?"
"Not to the extent you mentioned, no."
"Was kneeling in the sun not practiced on any other peak than Qing Jing?"
"...Not to the extent you described."
"Were no disciples ever ostracized by their peers on any other peak than Qing Jing?"
"Of course, some disciples find it difficult to fit in, but we would not go out of our way to worsen it!"
"So, Peak Lord He, you've never dumped out a disciples wine?"
"Not on their head! Yes, Cang Qiong Sect does discipline our disciples, but the punishments you mentioned at the trial went too far. We could not reasonably accept what he'd done, and so, he was ousted at the trial. Why do you bring up our methods now?"
"Simply because, if you knew that what Shen Qingqiu was doing was inappropriate, why did no one take any steps to stop him?"
At this, Qi Qingqi spoke up.
"The peak lords do not interfere with each other's disciplinary decisions. How would a parent feel if someone interfered with the discipline of their child? This lord, for one, would not take it kindly for these men to tell me how to care for my girls. And I'm sure you would hate for someone to tell you how to treat your wives, since you've not had any children yourself."
"Ah, but is Cang Qiong Sect not familial? This lord recalls that you all have generational names and function like a family unit. In such a case, would an aunt not beseech that her brother treat her nephew lightly?"
"Even families have rules amongst each other. And if that aunt is her brother's younger sister, why would she have any real say in his childrearing?"
"What then of the eldest brother?"
At this, her lips shut, a grimace just slightly flinching on her face.
The eyes of the crowd swiftly settled on Yue Qingyuan.
Ah...yeah. Shen Yuan was sure of it now.
Luo Binghe certainly did not like Yue Qingyuan.
In fact, that was an angle he'd considered when reading the book, as much as he loathed to admit there was anything wrong with the man. As the sect leader, he had the authority to set Shen Qingqiu straight, but he did not. He did nothing.
Just like he did nothing to come back for hi—Shen Jiu.
How many times did Luo Binghe look to him for help? Clearly, the book didn't explain everything, as it didn't explain Shen Jiu's past.
So, perhaps there were instances, where Binghe gave him a look. The sort that a child does when they need an adult to help them. Perhaps he had outright asked him for it, asked him to confirm if he deserved what was happening to him. And him, being a child, perhaps didn't know.
But Yue Qingyuan would've known. And he did know, judging by his silence.
He knew what Shen Qingqiu was doing was wrong, but he allowed it. And each time he refused to do anything, he was stabbing Binghe in the back.
...The trap with those thousand arrows now looked quite different to Shen Yuan.
He'd thought it was the typical overkill revenge plot from Luo Binghe the character. But, considering the circumstances, perhaps it was more symbolic than he'd thought.
Yue Qingyuan finally opened his mouth.
"This lord was in the wrong."
Well no shit, Sherlock!
"...So you say," Luo Binghe said quietly. "Is there any reason you did not govern your younger sect sibling and guide him to more reasonable disciplinary tactics?"
"...This lord has no excuse."
"Surely you don't. Though, an explanation would suffice."
None left his mouth. Instead...
"I admit that I was complicit in Shen Qingqiu's poor treatment of you."
"Tch."
When the crowd looked toward Shen Yuan, he stared away, his fan concealing the scowl on his face. His eye, though, held all the emotion they needed to see.
Typical. Irritating.
With the mood sufficiently cooled, Qi Qingqi attempted to speak again.
"If you wish to bestow punishment upon Sect Leader Yue, this lord asks that you allow the judgement to be fielded with his peers. Considering the damage you've caused to Shen Qingqiu's body, I am distrusting of your ability to discipline others reasonably."
Despite the jab at him, Luo Binghe smiled.
"Indeed, I can agree that my handling of Shen Qingqiu's treatment leaves much to be desired. After all, in addition to him not receiving guidance, this lord can no longer say he was abusing me whilst in his right mind."
At this, the crowd began to murmur again, confusion evident in their expressions. The Ku Xing Peak lord interrupted their musings, his voice forcefully calmed.
"Amitabha. To what are you referring? Do you mean to say Shen Qingqiu was insane before but that he is not now?"
"Frankly, yes. Two, Shen Qingqiu was mentally unfit to function as a peak lord prior to his current state, and Cang Qiong Sect should have easily noticed this to be the case. He was, in a specific capacity, incapable of differentiating right from wrong. As such, this lord unjustly punished Shen Qingqiu for the wrongdoing of his whole sect."
Even Shen Yuan wasn't sure about him following such a jump in logic. Hey, Binghe, what are you going for with this?!
"Beloved."
"Hmm?" he responded reflexively.
Shen Yuan looked up to see Binghe smiling at him kindly.
"Could you remind me of the definition of insanity?"
"Ah. Ahem. Insanity is mental illness of a severe nature, to the point one cannot distinguish fiction from reality, cannot conduct their affairs due to psychosis, or display...rather, is subject to uncontrollable and impulsive behavior... Ah, it's also known, in some aspects, as lunacy."
A few wolf demons immediately understood, murmuring amongst each other.
"You mention psychosis. And that is?"
"A loss of touch with reality. A symptom instead of a diagnosis itself. Psychosis can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, and abnormal movements."
"Thank you, my love."
Shen Yuan huffed and fanned himself, looking away as he turned to address the others.
"Peak Lord Mu, as a physician, are you aware of these mental maladies?"
Mu Qingfang, who had been silent throughout, stepped forward.
"This lord is a medical physician, not a psychiatrist. Unfortunately, mental maladies are beyond my scope of expertise."
"Ah, but you know the definition of some of the words, this lord presumes."
"...You would be correct."
"Then, if you would please define the ones you believe would be relevant for the others to know."
He remained quiet for a moment, but with a sigh, he began to speak.
"Hallucinations occur when you perceive something that doesn't exist, like a shadow, an object, or a person. Delusions are false beliefs held by individuals or groups that are fanciful, self-deceptive, demonstrably false, patently untrue, or impossible. Even so, the person or people with said delusions will be resistant to evidence that their belief is incorrect.
"Disorganized speech refers to interruptions in speaking patterns that makes it difficult for others to understand them. For example, incoherent babbling is a form of disorganized speech. And abnormal movements can range from seizures to motionlessness."
"Thanking Peak Lord Mu for your educational evaluation. Then, from your professional opinion, would you say that a qi deviation can be a cause of psychosis?"
"It is possible. Yes. Qi deviations have similar results to the psychosis you mention."
"And it can result in death, yes. Have you noticed personality changes as a result of a qi deviation in your field?
"Yes."
"Then, from your professional opinion, could persistent qi deviations alter someone's personality? If not forever, at least for a period of time?"
Mu Qingfang paused. Luo Binghe tilted his head in quiet, eerie curiosity.
"Hmm?"
"...It...may be possible."
"I would think so. After all, is it true, from your profession as a physician, that qi deviations can have permanent ramifications on someone's physical wellbeing, such as a loss in core stability?"
"...Yes."
"I see! However, with treatment, can these qi deviations be reduced, alleviated, or their symptoms treated?"
"...They can be, depending on the situation."
"Indeed, indeed. Then." Luo Binghe's jovial tone dropped. "Did Shen Qingqiu ever receive long-term, thorough treatment for the results of his constant qi deviations?"
Ah.
Even Shen Yuan paused.
"A normal cultivator may qi deviate once or twice, if that many times. Some never deviate throughout their entire journey. But Shen Qingqiu deviated many, many times. Enough that Qing Jing Peak used to have protocol for functioning when he was indisposed.
"Had this happened to any other peak lord or disciple, would you, as a sect, as a family, not done everything in your power to help and heal them? Would you not have done anything you could to stop them from suffering? What made Shen Qingqiu so different? ...Ah. Sect Leader Yue."
He did not look as firm and staunch as he had before. Instead, there was something a tad haunted about him. He kept shooting that pleading look toward Shen Yuan.
The latter had begun to hate it immensely.
Why look at him like that? What do you want?
Will you do anything beyond looking like that?
"When was Shen Qingqiu accepted into Cang Qiong Sect?"
His gaze flickered, then he turned back to Luo Binghe.
"...When he was brought to the mountain, the Peak Lord of Qing Jing decided to accept him."
"Hmmh. Beloved."
"Mm?"
"Tell me again how you met with Yue Qingyuan."
"...Right." He had to think a bit, remember to say it as though it was his memory rather than a dream he had. If... They were still just dreams. Right? "There was an Immortal Alliance Conference. This one was...under the tutelage of Wu Yanzi. He brought us there to...kill disciples and take their hearts for some sort of elixir. When he targeted Yue Qingyuan, I...killed him."
"I see, thank you. Then, to more accurately state how Shen Qingqiu was accepted into Cang Qiong Sect, it was after he rescued their then top disciple in the entire sect from being murdered by his then shifu. Ah, but Wu Yanzi...I didn't know anything of him, but I recall learning that he was reviled in the cultivation community for being a criminal. Murder, arson, robbery. He was a human practitioner of demonic cultivation.
"Therefore, Shen Qingqiu, prior to his acceptance in discipleship and rising to his position of Qing Jing Peak Lord, was also a human practitioner of demonic cultivation, correct? After all, that's all he'd really come to know. That was all someone like Wu Yanzi would teach him. So then, I wonder how he was treated, as a demonic cultivator among the many little ladies and lords of Cang Qiong Sect."
Qi Qingqi cut in again.
"You think he was mistreated? That's just conjecture! You have no evidence of any mistreatment you can try to claim he faced!"
"And I have no intent on interrogating my future empress on it either. But this lord can say, demonstratively, that the previous Qing Jing Peak Lord taught Shen Qingqiu righteous cultivation. In teaching him your cultivation practices, they were either purposefully or unknowingly negligent, causing his qi to clash with the core he'd formed during his years as a demonic cultivator.
"Neither they nor anyone of their generation did anything substantial to help him adjust to their teachings and practices despite him trying to follow the righteous path. Without any known treatment given to him, Shen Qingqiu struggled and formed a core with both spiritual and demonic qi in a human body. Such a situation would prime anyone for a lifetime of constant, rampant qi deviations, wouldn't it?"
Binghe's eyes narrowed at them.
"Then, instead of growing beyond what their shifu taught them, the Qing generation of Cang Ciong Sect, either knowingly or ignorantly, neglected to help him change, whether to purge the demonic qi or to help him manage both flowing through his forcefully altered meridians.
"And, during the time of my trial against him, Shen Qingqiu, took on the blame for all wrongdoings brought against him, either with or without the context that, for a good portion of the time he functioned as Qing Jing Peak Lord, he was likely suffering the symptoms of severe qi deviations that may very well have killed him at any point, twisting his mind and perpetuating actions beyond what he potentially would have ever done.
"And instead of coming to his defense with any of these details, Cang Qiong Sect...no, Sect Leader Yue, who we can quite clearly prove knew that all this happened, did absolutely nothing to help him."
Luo Binghe laughed.
"Indeed, what a loving, close-knit family."
...Fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.
...Shen Yuan understood.
He understood it now.
Why Shen Jiu became intolerant of Yue Qingyuan.
Why he'd so firmly overlapped Luo Binghe and Qiu Jianluo.
Why he'd just as firmly overlapped Ning Yingying and Qiu Haitang.
Why he was an acerbic piece of shit spiraling further out of whack the longer he lived.
...One of the two things he'd been guilty of.
Of abusing Luo Binghe. And he hadn't even been mentally sound enough to teach, much less run a peak.
And the other thing he'd been guilty of, killing all the men and destroying the Qiu House...that had been the trigger to his future psychotic symptoms. He hadn't killed just the men for no reason.
He knew why now, having dreamt it. Experienced it.
Felt the pain in his broken legs. Heard Yue Qi call to him from the other side of the door. Waited.
Waited.
Waited.
And could wait no longer, his mind shattering as he burned everything he could to the ground.
...It hurt.
It hurt to realize the Qiu House had not been the only group to wrong him. That Wu Yanzi and Qiu Jianluo hadn't been the only men to abuse him. That the Cang Qiong he'd loved had let him hurt and hurt him more.
And all he could feel, aside from the pain, was...
...the same resignation he felt the first time he was judged.
He was guilty. He felt guilty. But he was not the only one to blame.
----
"We plead not guilty to this charge for reason of insanity."
— Luo Binghe, defense attorney and prosecutor, apparently.
