Another Sun Au: Tang Monk and Young Sun
Author's Note: Written for the discord JTTW server event! Ngl this is one of my guilty pleasures and one I often think about/daydream. This is a intro to hopefully more(when I have time to write) of my au. Also open for any questions(and requests if it sparks my mood) related to Journey to the west :3
Warnings: None
Words: Roughly 1.65k
Special thanks and shoutout to @sparrow-in-boots for being my beta reader! Check out their blog(s) and art!!
“Baldy monky! I'm here for the secret lesson!” A jovial voice shrieks, the voice bouncing and echoing in his cell. It wouldn't be a secret for long with how loud she's being, but then again, not a single adult yaoguai monkey stopped her yet, nor did the Great Sage make an appearance since that day. So much trust to allow her to roam free like this or how overconfident the ruler of the mountain seems to be, with no care that even children can come and go as they please.
He opens and closes his mouth, as if to say something, before calmly replying to her; “Young Sun,” he wants to keep his distance, at least emotional and personal, “Refrain from shouting, remember inside voices, less you draw six ears.” Especially when any day his head will be on a platter for the Great Sage and his sworn brothers as the grandest of grand feasts. “And please do not call me ‘Baldy Monky’, it's rude.”
Finally she comes into his view with a blank expression, but her eyes sparkle with innocent joy. “Sorry, shifu.” Young Sun whispers, crouching next to his bars. “I got excited about today's lessons.” Tripitaka sighs, tries his best to smile at her, only to falter when she flinches. “I'm really sorry for being loud. Please don't be mad at me.” He can only blink and look at her.
Mad at her? Sure, he was mad and frustrated, but at his situation rather than her; Tripitaka was meant to be journeying to the West to gather the scriptures to bring back to the Tang Empire, along with his small party. The travel was ruinously cut short after they were captured by yaoguai, with Tripitaka as the sole survivor who witnessed the others devoured. He would’ve met the same fate, but fate was crueler. The Heaven-Equaling Great Sage, the one who wreaked havoc in heaven and escaped from Budda’s imprisonment, happened to pay a visit to his lowly general's home. The look from those fiery eyes petrified his very soul that day, before the Great Sage declared that he will stay at the Flower Fruit Mountain for a celebration in the coming weeks, as the main course. “Dis….Young Sun, let us start with your lesson.” He shifts to face her, his beads - bless the Merciful Bodhisattva they didn't strip from him - cupped together in his hands.
“Okay, Shifu.” Young Sun mimics him, albeit clumsily, her thin and hairy arms shuffling her equally hairy legs to cross together like his. His lips twitches, as he fondly looks at her and reminded how at her age he did the very same thing: full of energy and wonderment for the world with a yearning to learn and to help; until the iron bars between them came back to his view and the bleak reminder of his future. Despite this, he begins the first teachings of Buddhism, blessed that at least this persistent, curious monkey wants to learn.
It wasn't even a day after his arrival that Young Sun met him for the first time.
“I am Sun Yángguāng, the youngest and first to be born in 500 years! Who are you, ape? And why are you bald?”
He was so terrified and shocked at their first, but short meeting together as the Great Sage and his four ape generals were there as well. Tripitaka can't recall if it was one of the generals or the Great Sage himself who whisked her away for a scolding. Not that it did much, as she found ways to visit him and learn much of the outside world and Buddhism through him.
“Um…shifu..” Her voice was quiet and unsure, something that must've been on her mind for some time.
“We're not meant to talk during meditation.” He replies.
“I know but…” Young Sun sighs and Tripitaka opens his eyes to look at her. “...I'm conflicted, each day draws nearer to the King's grand feast with the other sages and your…” She bites down at her lip, her eyes move to the ground when they meet his. Ah, this topic again. He remembers how jovial she was at the beginning of the feast and the special occasion until she realized what it meant for him. A topic that is that left her more somber and haunted by restless nights, though this never stopped her from visits and lessons.
“I cannot be biased and say I wish to die, Young Sun. I wish to live so that I continue my journey, but if I am fated to die here, then so be it.” He accepted this, it breaks his heart that he'll fail before he even began, but he'll atone in his next life. He just never expected this would also break her heart, someone who only knew him for a short time. Tripitaka watches as she bows her head and her knuckles turn white with her colorful hanfu bunched up between her fingers; her body shakes with a sharp inhale. He doesn't say a word, nor comforts or cries, he accepts his death and so must she.
No words were exchanged between them after that, Young Sun collects herself and leaves with her head high, but her eyes clouded. Tripitaka inhales deeply and returns to his meditation. That was the last time he saw her, never returning for lessons or visits again; the small ray of sunshine made his lonesome cell dark and alone with his thoughts.
Days or weeks have passed, and Tripitaka wasn't certain how long he's been trapped, but none of that matter as today was his final day in this life. The guards came and announced it before they escorted him from the dingy dungeon to the opulent stone palace. So many twists and turns that made his head spin. It was like a labyrinth and only the residents would know the exit. It was hopeless to even attempt an escape. Before the guards arrived in a room with a tray of food and wine. So the Great Sage had some compassion to allow him one final supper, even if it was back handed to him.
The guards toss him onto the stone floor, the rugs his only means to dampen his fall and the cold before they turn and slam the door with a laugh. He can still hear them through the thick wood as he dusts himself off. If he listens more closely, he can hear the chattering of servants as he sits with his eyes closed.
“Today's finally here!”
“All the Sages under one roof like before the Great War. This will be the perfect mend between our alliance!”
“I heard the Demon Bull King is bringing his son, but not his first wife. I wonder if one of his servants has juicy gossip about that.”
“Grandfather Sun has picked such a perfect day to celebrate, such an auspicious day!”
“Shifu.” A hush whisper against his ear and hands quickly press to stop any sounds of panic slipping through his mouth. “It's me, Young Sun.” Tripitaka finally relaxes and opens his eyes as her arms slip past his head. “I meditated and reflected before I finally found the answer.” He shuffles until he can see Young Sun and softly gasps at the sight. “I decided to fully dedicate myself to be your disciple and helping you on your journey.”
The candle's lights shine beautifully against her freshly shaven head and just beyond, over her shoulder from his view, a hidden passage. “We don't have much time Shifu, we have to hurry before they find ou-”
Just as Young Sun helps bring her master to his feet, a scream bounces and echoes off the walls, cutting through all else and sending the whole palace in a flurry. “Yángguāng! Someone took our Yángguāng!”
Sun Yángguāng wastes no time as she guides her master through the secret passage and closes it behind them. She has to be quick and clever for them to escape. She hoped Aunty RinRin wouldn't check up on her for another thirty minutes, but she should've expected today's excitement that Aunty Rinrin wanted her to look her best for the guests. Her hands reach for his, and she presses a finger to her lip before navigating the secret passage; crossing one room to reach a new one without notice. One day, Young Sun will apologize for the fright she given to Aunty RinRin over the mess of her room, but not today.
The two pause and stop whenever footsteps drawing near are heard, only to go a different direction. She leads downwards, deeper into the stone palace, “Trust me, Shifu.” As if she knew his doubts, and gave a squeeze to the monk's hand. Tripitaka says nothing, but squeezes her hand back.
The smell of a salty breeze, cracks of moonlight dances on the small craven dock. “This is how the elders survived the burning.” Young Sun helps Tripitaka into the small boat, barely enough room for the two of them between boxes and jars. “Forgive me for my absence. I was getting preparations ready, and it wasn't easy to go unnoticed. It's the downside of being the youngest and only mortal of my kingdom.”
He watches her untie the ropes and use the oar to push away from dry land. “I hope the king was drinking his fill before that scream, I don't think I can outsmart him when his mind isn't dull with wine. Hopefully there is mercy and we leave without his notice.”
Gently, the oar glides and swishes in the water as the boat exits the cave and into the open; neither of them dare light a lantern nor talk as the sounds of shouting and soon fighting rang out from the island. They keep their eyes forward as the sounds are slowly drowned by the waves splashing against the boat on their journey to the west.

(Adding this for extra context.👆)
Depending on the iteration, Sun Wukong is usually a chill, mellow and friendly type of civil trickster god. He's a mischief maker but how bad the prank will be depends mainly on the target. Sun Wukong would definitely befriend a Cybertronian as he had gotten himself sworn siblings from various different species and cultures.
There are a few things that will anger him but threatening his homeland or his people is the biggest one. Do know Sun Wukong's strength and fury was so bad that Budda had to get brought in to stop him before he took over the Heavens. A bunch of giant mechanical beings from the stars bringing their war near his people?
It's sheer mercy that Sun Wukong goes after the leaders than the soldiers as he could've slaughter them all. The Decepticons are more likely have to the most casualties cause they don't care about how much destruction their fighting causes. And none of them can fly away fast enough since Sun Wukong could conjure his Somersault Cloud for pursuit or swat them down with Ruyi Jingu Bang.
But yeah both sides are fucked if they anger the Great Sage Equal To Heaven.
the swk/optimus prime fight isnt as interesting as megatron vs nezha. wukong would beat his aft lmao
imagine this: great autobot leader optimus prime, staggering under the weight of 600 rambunctious monkey clones, then getting smacked on the head with a comically large iron staff
the fight would only drag on because wukong thinks its funny. and hes right.

Too Crazy In Love : Part 1, The Soulmate of the Monkey King.
Fandom: LEGO Monkie Kid
Characters: Sun Wukong(Monkey King), Reader
Themes: Soulmate, Yandere
Summary:  Sun Wukong has his whole life been dedicated to finding his soulmate. He has had moments of doubt that you even exist but during the time he decided to take a break to look for you, and he finds you. You are his perfect soulmate. Unknown to him, he is not yours.
Word Count: 2669
A03 | Masterlist
Part 1(You are here) | Part 2 | Part 3
When he was first hatched from his rock, Sun Wukong - aka The Monkey King - hoped he had a soulmate. Yes, even after he accidentally lazer eyed the Jade Emperor, the God of Gods in the eastern world.
He imagined every day what his soulmate would be like. Would they too be like him? Would they be monkey-like, like his born form? Human? God? Worse case they could be a demon but he accepted within himself he would still love them no matter what.
It was only when he was working and studying under the sage who lived on top of the mountain of Heart and Mind did he reconsider everything he was hoping for.
The sage once told him that gods were originally only ever granted soulmates which changed after one too many gods’ soulmates were humans who could not return their love. This ended up allowing demons to have soulmates as well but for the time being there was no way to tell if Monkley had a soulmate. Only time could tell.
He had never considered NOT having a soulmate? What did soulmates even FEEL like anyway? How would he know? Maybe because he came from a rock he wouldn’t have a soulmate. And even if you were real, could he ever find you? Would you even love him as a monkey?
He started to train to change his form. Not just because it would be easier to not be killed by the 3 ways the Gods could kill him in his new immortal state, but now also to change his form if you never liked it.
He may never know if you were actually out there, but he was going to put in all his effort to make sure you did love him!
So when he was told by the gods he was going to become one, he was over the moon! It would make sure he did get a soulmate and most importantly would not just be able to find you, but to keep you safe with his God status.
So you can imagine his rage when he found out his rank in heaven actually the bare fucking bottom.
He didn’t think he ever… FELT angry before… He didn’t know if it was because the Jade Emperor technically lied to him about it, did it to control him, or was because he only accept it to make sure you were real and were safe. Either way, he was angry.
He made a short-sighted choice to go back down to heaven and call himself the Sage Equal to Heaven, but those fools needed to learn their place! The Jade Emperor sent down two fools to beat him and he overpowered them like it was a simple action like breathing. So when he was accepted back in with his requested title he was very happy. They also gave him a side job to look after the immortal peaches! And sure he MAY have eaten them, also stole the immortal wine and in his drunken state took immortal pills. Like, all of them.
What level of immortality did it make him? Technically it would mean he forever times immortal but he is counting am I right?
Sun Wukong is counting that’s for sure.
But could someone explain to him why they sent Erlang of all people to fight him? That just seems like a dick move.
So he is tied up about to be killed at the monster block and all he could think of was “I am not dying without seeing my soulmate’s face”!
But what could he do? They were going to kill him!--
Oh.
Right.
He is Immortal because of the peaches, wine, and pills.
He can’t die.
Damn he so smart. Your gonna love him I promise.
But again, Jade Emperor is mean and he calls his best pal, the Buddha.
Rude.
So when he met face to face, he was surprised by what the guy said.
“What do you want most, Monkey?” The Budda asked.
No one ever asked what he wanted.
“You know what?!” Monkey raised his voice at the man.
The Jade Emperor hid behind the Buddha and all the other gods watched in fear. What would this insane monkey do?
“All I want is a guarantee I will have a soulmate and no one will get in my way!”
Everyone became silent. This was not what they thought the insane immortal monkey would ask for and yet, here he was.
Everyone waited for what the Buddha would say. Surely after hearing it, he would not grant such a disgusting request. Hell, make sure Monkey never had one!
But everyone stood still and waited for what the Buddha would say.
“I’ll make a bet with you, Sun Wukong,” The Budda said calmly, breaking the tension in the air like a burning knife. “I will grant every request you make if you can successfully jump out of the palm of my hand.”
Upon hearing this without thinking, Monkey stepped onto the Budda’s hand and jumped as far and as high as he could. He will have you! No matter what!
He may have been too brash though as he jumped to the edge of the universe itself. He saw five pillars holding the sky and could only think that one day he would take you here.
To show his love for you before you even arrived into his life he wrote on one of the pillars saying “I will one day meet the love of my universe, and when that day comes I will love them forever”.
Of course, he takes a piss before he jumps back and lands perfectly back on the Budda palm feeling smug.
He felt cheated upon seeing the Budda’s face being disappointed only to be explained those pillars he saw earlier? Yeah, those were the Budda’s fingers.
As punishment Monkey was trapped under the mountain which was locked with a seal so he could never leave his prison.
The biggest shame to him however was that he would probably never see you, and so he cried himself to the point he became part of the earth.
But Monkey’s biggest shame would not be realised, that shame being that Monkey gained all this power for someone he could not know for sure would be real, and even left his partner in his shadow. That was his true shame and the true reason why he was punished.
Sun Wukong would have to wait for thousands of years to even meet your eyes for the shame he brought upon himself.
---
Wukong’s final act of being “a hero” was trapping away the Demon Bull King. After fighting demons, gods, and travelling to the West, he thought he had enough. He got all the powers to protect you, all the glory, now all that was left was to find you.
He left his staff to keep the Demon Bull King under wraps but also to show to everyone and everything he wasn’t doing it anymore. He was going out into the world to find you and that was all he wanted to do.
He went to every place on the planet multiple times over and still had yet to find you. He collected weird things over the years hoping to one day to show you everything single thing. However, as the years went on, the pile grew, and you had yet to still be found he left as if this had all been in vain.
Once again his hope for you to be real was vanishing and he didn’t believe it would be coming back anytime soon. Maybe this is what he gets from doing the Buddha of all immortal beings dirty like that all those years ago.
He remembered when he first saw MK. Some cheeky kid on his human life journey being a total fanboy of The Monkey King. But like, who wouldn’t haha.
It’s a tough call(it was in fact a spur of the moment move. Monkey King 101) to make MK his successor, but could happen right? The only reason he noticed him anyway was that he was watching Tripitaka’s reincarnation, Tang, who was very close with MK and was weirdly close to Zhu Bajie’s reincarnation Pigsy.
He teaches MK whenever he wants to but most of the time stays at his temple close to the city. His whole life he had been looking for his soulmate, but a break to train someone new to be his replacement couldn’t be harmful, right?
It was New Year’s Eve and he was training MK when the Spider Queen attacked. He was more annoyed with the whole thing but liked making jabs at The Demon Bull King and his son. It was very entertaining.
Well, besides the Lady Bone Demon thing but he was going to sort that out as fast as he could.
As he was walking around the ruined city to find some clues. He heard someone call out for help. There was something that pulled him towards the voice. His legs started moving towards where the voice came from before his brain could even work as normal.
“Help!?” you yelped out, hoping someone would hear you.
You had only wakened up from being turned into one of the Spider Queens followers, becoming part of the hive mind. But now you were hanging by a piece of clothing.
You had to admit you weren’t the biggest fan of heights and being held up by something that felt like it was ripping was scary.
You were suddenly tackled to the ground by a hairy thing? You hit the ground pretty hard and fast so it took you a moment the thing was talking to you.
“-can you hear me?” The voice asked you.
The voice was uplifting to your ears. You nodded your head as you blinked your eyelids over and over again to try to refrain your sight after hitting the ground pretty hard. Your head was in pain before after leaving the spider hivemind but now it hurt because of hitting the ground.
“I- I’m sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you, are you okay?” It sounded like whoever was talking to you was going to say something else before they realised the pain you were in. They were expressing real concern but it seemed like something was more important on their mind.
“Just hit my head, nothing too bad.” You were able to mutter out as your eyesight was coming back to you.
It seemed like the person who saved you was a human-sized monkey? You could pick out golds, oranges and reds at first. It was as if he was the burning sun, deciding to shine only on you. It was a little overwhelming.
He sat you up, letting your head rest on the hard stone wall in the alleyway you had found yourself in. It wasn’t what Wukong wanted for you but you needed to gather your surroundings before he could move you. He didn’t want to scare you.
He wondered why his body reacted in the way it did until he saw your face. Once he saw you everything hit him like a truck. The overwhelming warmth within his chest and on his cheeks and the feeling of butterflies within his stomach. It was the best feeling he had ever felt and he knew why.
It had been the moment he had longed for since he rose from his rock egg. You. You were his soulmate.
Seeing you in distress in the situation you were in made him jump towards you without thinking. He tried after you were in his arms to soften the blow you would feel but upon hitting the ground he realised he failed in that.
He was being stupid and rash, like he was back all those years ago. He should’ve thought about how he would save you before just jumping.
But, feeling you in his arms was so, amazing. He felt short of breath from your scent, his hands felt like they were on fire, and your dizzy little face was just so adorable.
And it was all his.
You were all for him.
You were his and his alone and that gave him such a rush.
You were perfect in every single way.
Your skin, your eyes, your hair, your voice, your body.
Everything was perfect.
Your sight had mostly returned to you, just being a bit blurry around the edges, you looked at the man who saved you.
He looked familiar to you but you couldn’t place where you had seen him before. Though, you did notice the man’s tail that had made a heart shape.
You didn’t try to stare at him, but you did notice he was staring at you like a lovesick puppy, and it had weirded you out a little.
“Um,” you tried to break the unnerving silence. “Thank you for saving me.”
“Adorable.” He said as if he wasn’t paying attention to what you had said.
“I- Excuse me?” You felt your cheeks flush and were confused by his words.
“I said your welcome.” He answered you with a big smile on his face.
Something about him and how he was looking and smiling at you made you, uncomfortable.
You wanted- No, you needed to leave, and now.
“Thank you for your help,” you said as you stood up, using the wall behind you as support. “But I should start getting myself home now.”
You felt uncomfortable that he was trying to help you stand up when his hands were too close to your waist. He stiffen when you mentioned going home and his forced smile was shown to you.
Sun Wukong was considering just taking you to his temple right now and keeping you in one of the secret rooms it had. If he did that, you would just be labelled as a missing person after the attack of Spider Queen.
He did notice you trying to back away from him, shrinking in on yourself agonist a wall.
You weren’t going anywhere, peaches. You weren’t going to leave his sight anytime soon. He had been searching for you for years, and he wasn’t going to let you slip away that easily.
His very tiny logical self tried to tell him not to act on impulse, with just the mention of that word made his younger self string up.
Should he just wisp you up into a cloud and take you straight to his temple? What if you started to fight back? A plan was already starting to form in his mind and unknowing his disgusting thoughts were showing on his face.
You could tell by how his eyes were looking at nothing, deep in thought and how he had a gross smile starting to grow across his face.
You needed to leave.
You sucked in your stomach and quickly brushed out of his lock. “Thank you bye!” You simply stated as you walked quickly.
You could feel the stare he was giving you as if he was burning you with lava straight onto your skin.
You tried to walk as fast as you could but you could hear his steps close behind.
Closer and closer.
Faster and faster.
Fear started to burn at your skin. What did this thing want with you?
He suddenly appeared in front of you, which made you gasp and almost trip over yourself.
He put on hand on your wrist, pulling you close with one tug then placing his other hand on your back.
“Sorry peaches,” He said with a twisted smile and lustful eyes. “I’ve been looking for you too long to let you just slip away just like that.”
You felt fear and dread mix together within you.
You never made it home that night.
Your family filled you as a missing person the next day and you were filled as missing to a suspected dead person of the Attack of the Spider Queen.

No senju means 1000 hands, that's why hashiramas budda summon thing looks like that
ooohhh that makes sense. is his name related to the word for sage jutsu (senjutsu) at all though? since they both seem to have that "senju" part. but maybe it's just a coincidence

On the pilgrims as demons in Journey to the West, and the pilgrims as gods in The New Legends of Monkey 2018 adaption. (aka, my extremely jumbled thoughts on why the pilgrims being demons is cool and relevant and new legends kind of fundamentally misses the point of jttw. But it’s ok. It’s an alright reimagining, it’s fine to like new legends. But this is why I think new legends is such a different jttw adaption from everything that has ever come out of china or asia. Again. Just my speculation on why this is.)
Also it’s thanks to @dorkshadows post on the same subject that made me overthink this a lot.
In the Journey to the West, one might think it curious that the protagonists/heros of the story are the pilgrims - especially the disciples, who are all demons. (Minus the horse who is really a dragon lol.) The disciples’ jobs are to protect the holy human Tang Monk/ Tripitaka from demons who want to eat his flesh and become immortal, so the whole time they are fighting mainly against their own kind. But the reason the disciples are on this journey is to get redemption from their past crimes and maybe even get enlightenment - Sun Wukong/Monkey needs to be redeemed for the havoc in heaven and being mean and arrogant, Zhu Bajie/Pigsy needs to be redeemed for being horny on main all the damned time, and Sha Wujing/ Sandy for....breaking an important heavenly vase.
It’s important to note that the three aren’t evil or Bad by default because they were demons. Sun Wukong lived at Mount Huaguo for a couple hundred years (?I think?) with thousands of other demon monkeys in peace before the havoc in heaven. As a demon he was accepted as a disciple by venerable Taoist master, Puti.  Bull Demon and Ironfan are not straight up evil, they were only antagonists to the pilgirms because they were under the impression their demon son was killed by them (he wasn’t.) Their (young and bratty evil) Demon Son, Red Boy, in fact got a chance to redeem himself for attempting to eat Tang Monk and being annoying and bratty by becoming Bodhisattva Guanyin’s disciple! Demons only deserve to get murdered by the pilgrims if they Make The Bad Decision To Eat Tang Monk. To attempt to get immortality by Cheating The System. (Demons can get immortality if they just Cultivate Themselves. Sure it takes hundreds of years but it’s free and no one has to get eaten.)
It’s also important to note that out of the three, only Sun Wukong/Monkey was born, by nature, a demon. Bajie/Pigsy and Wujing/ Sandy were originally gods. Bajie used to be Marshal Tianpeng, in charge of a significant heavenly army. One day in heaven, he got extremely drunk. In his drunken state, he made sexual advances on goddess Chang’e of the moon, who did not appreciate it. So Bajie/ Pigsy was apprehended, stripped of his title, and chucked down to hell to be reincarnated as a pig demon. Are you a lecherous bastard? U deserve to be tossed from heaven to be a pig demon. Wujing/ Sandy used to be the Curtain Lifting General. One day he dropped an important heavenly artefact, causing the Queen Mother to be so enraged she stripped him of his title and had him chucked to earth to be a horrible, ugly sand demon. Every day 7 swords would drop from heaven and impale him 7 times, causing him excruciating pain, so depending on the version, Wujing/ Sandy hides in the sand or the lake from these attacks. (This really was a disproportionate punishment though, it really sucks. I guess to cope with this shitty unjust punishment, Wujing/Sandy really became Evil and started eating humans as a demon.) Their punishment was to be forced from being a god to being a demon.
Many of the demons that the pilgrims fight on the journey west used to be animals of the heavenly court - like Change’s jade rabbit, and somebody’s celestial cow, or celestial lion, or literally Taishang Laojun/Laozi’s celestial child disciples. Celestial beings who became demon or moonlighted as demons.
The thing I’m trying to say with all of this is that it is possible to change from a demon to a god, or a god to a demon or etc etc etc. There is no inherent evil. (So I guess there’s no inherent good either lol. Ying Yang and all that).
Sun Wukong, while he is a demon, is also regarded as a god at the same time. He was employed by heaven as a demon and has the title of a god - Great Sage Equal to Heaven. He is often respected as a god by other gods, and respected/ feared as a demon by other demons.
After the journey, he is a demon and a god and a buddha.
He’s all of that.
Journey to the West is an extrapolation of chinese culture, where there is no black and white dichotomy between good and evil. There is always movement between natures and states and forms. Buddhas can wear the faces of demons (Bodhisattva Guanyin once disguised herself as a demon). Demons can change to become gods - demons can achieve enlightenment. (Sun Wukong/ Monkey). Humans can become gods (Chang’e, Nezha, Pagoda God Li Jing, the Eight Immortals, and demigods like Erlang Shen and Sanseng Mu). Humans can become Buddha (Tathagata Budda, Bodhisattva Guanyin, Tang Monk and every person who reached Budhahood). Gods can become demons (Bajie/ Pigsy, Wujing/ Sandy). When people die, they get reincarnated. It’s fluid.
In The New Legends of Monkey adaption of jttw, the pilgrims are all gods. They start off as gods and they remain as gods. They are good because they are gods. The demons are evil because they are demons. They do bad things because they are demons. The god pilgrims had done nothing wrong - they’re not trying to get redemption. In new legends, by nature, there is good and there is evil. A dichotomy. Black and white. This, tbh, looks much much more influenced by Christianity. Like angels v demons. Jesus v the devil. When people die, they go to hell, or go to heaven. It’s set.
