Anyway, pick a song based on one of my bad descriptions. You do not need to recognize any of these songs (although there are, as always, band names and random lyrics and breadcrumbs mixed in). Just pick whichever description sounds most appealing, or funniest, or anagrams out to something clever, or however you make your random decisions. At the end of the poll, I will put the songs into a playlist, from the song with the lowest number of votes to the song with the highest number of votes, and share the playlist (plus links to each individual song).
If you would like me to tag you when the playlist is done, leave a comment or put it in your reblog somewhere, and I’ll make sure to tag you. If you desperately want to know what one particular song is and don’t want to wait a week, shoot me an ask and I will answer.
And please reblog! More reblogs = more votes = a more interesting playlist.

Buddie 615 meta
Before we really get into it, I’m just gonna snicker for a second over the fact that the death doula is named Natalia. Why? The name is related to the Latin term for Christmas Day, which is the holiday when Jesus was born. So the word that the name comes from is related to birth, natal. There’s a touch of irony there, that they gave this name to the girl who is not just a death doula, but who looks like she’s actually into death (who thinks dying for a few minutes is cool or amazing. I have to say, it’s not. It’s a good thing to accept death as a part of life, one that heightens life’s meaning, and help others do the same, it’s another to think that the physically and emotionally scarring experience of being dead for a few minutes is “cool”) and I think that’s an interesting tone to choose when introducing Buck’s new Love Interest. (if you’re into it, you can find more name meanings for 911 characters here) ~~
The scene of Eddie and Chris at the cemetery was very touching. It also spoke volumes on how Buck has taken the same role in Christopher’s life as Shannon. We saw in eps 611 as well as this one that Chris is hoping to be heard by the parent that life has taken away from him (Shannon for good, Buck temporarily). What I find interesting is that with the hospital visit, Eddie must understand this on some level. Even with the guardianship reveal, no one has ever explicitly referred to Buck as Chrstopher’s other dad. But he is, and moments like this cement it. We talk about these parallels, but Eddie gets to live them. He witnesses with his own eyes his son talking about Buck in the same way he does about Shannon. Eddie KNOWS what Buck is to their family unit and it’s not just an emergency guardian. ~~
Which connects me to something I touched upon in my 614 meta, Eddie’s journey. He’s supposedly been okay with dating again since 406, but in the last ep we discovered that he’s still held back by past trauma from his failed relationship with Shannon. She’s featured heavily in this ep, too. Her being Christopher’s mom means she’s a presence in Eddie’s life who will always be there. A reminder of how things can go wrong, meaning romantically, but also just in terms of how unexpected death can be.
It pained me to go from Eddie admitting in 614 that he didn’t want to be alone, to him echoing the words of their deceased vic, “We’re all gonna die alone.” That’s something I’ve heard people saying not so much regarding the question of whether there would be someone by your side when you pass away. More like, when death claims us, we all embark on that last journey into the dark unknown on our own. Whether there’s something after death or not, we’ll all discover that completely by ourselves. That’s such a deeply lonely thought, and we see Eddie trying to deal with it in this ep by not postponing seeing his parents. He realizes he was wrong to assume they got time, because death might come for us at any given moment, just like it happened with Shannon. It’s a continuation of his journey, which is obviously not over yet, but to me it’s quite surprising how this week’s ep actually joined Buck and Eddie’s with the common theme of death, but specifically death intertwined with their romantic life. I think each of them is such a fascinating character in its own right, so why the need to connect their journeys like this? I am staring at you, 911. ~~
I was happy that Eddie brought up what a bad idea it is for Buck to be dating someone they helped on a call. This has been a theme with Buck since he meets the snake lady on a call in 101, through Ali in 202, Taylor in 206 and now Natalia. In other words, this has a big, red sign al over it that says it’s doomed to fail, but our Buck is once more failing to notice that. Hopefully the rest of the events in 6b will help him learn and stop making this particular mistake, where he connects his idea of having self-worth only as a firefighter with thinking he can only be romantically desirable to those he helps on calls. ~~
I wrote in this ask reply about the insanity of how Buck and Eddie seem to always start dating again in consecutive eps. As if 911 is not unhinged enough about that, we also have Buck and Eddie being obstructive with the other guy’s dating attempts, first Buck suggesting ghosting to Eddie as a way of blowing off his date with Vanessa in 614, and now Eddie right away pointing out that it’s not a great idea for Buck to be dating Natalia.
We have seen Buddie dating multiple people over the course of almost 5 seasons now, and not a single time have we seen either man on screen approve of their best friend’s romantic partner. Almost like there’s just no one who’s good enough for the man they love so much, right? No one, because on some level, they know what we do, too. That no one else can compete with what the two of them have together. Which is why none of these LIs feel right and acceptable as partners for their best friend. ~~
I love that right off the bat, we got a reminder that Eddie knows Buck better than everyone, on very intimate levels. Just like Eddie knew when Buck was having an emergency session with Dr. Copeland back in 404, while even Bobby as their captain didn’t, we now saw Eddie knows how well Buck handles his taxes. It’s such spouse behavior. Most of us do not have best friends who keep tabs on how we handle governmental bureaucracy, right? But then the end of this ep circles back to this idea and gives us that scene at the cemetery where Eddie proves that this is true not just when it comes to the small things of daily life. He sees Buck, knows him, understands him and Eddie accepts him in every possible way. Which is why he can say that Buck has indeed been different since the lightning strike, an awareness we don’t hear from anyone else, not even from Maddie, Buck’s very close and loving sister.
It reminded me of how Buck said in 309 that Eddie can be honest with him. Then in 511 Buck repeated a variation of that, saying Eddie doesn’t have to pretend with him. In 513 and 514, Eddie got to be indeed fully open with Buck, just as this was paralleled in 612, where Buck was honest with Eddie. This ep continued to expand on this theme, with Eddie reassuring Buck that he doesn’t need to be anything for anyone. And I loved that in an ep where Buck has just started dating someone new, where he thinks she sees him better than anyone, the person who still gets him the most is Eddie, and that’s the person Buck shares himself with the most, too. There is not a single thing Natalia said to him or that he said to her during their date that can rival the intimacy of the cemetery talk. And if Buck still needs a wake up call to see that, well. I do think there’s a good chance he’ll get one, maybe even very soon.

Late Night Buck & Tommy Ramble: Shit is getting interesting
I honestly thought today was going to be fucking chill with no promo and maybe only a whisper or two about tomorrow's episode. We currently have 21 hours left until the new episode airs and we have so much to unpack because everyone is just out there wilding right now
Get yourself a drink and a snack and prepare yourself. There is a lot to discuss. Minor spoilers for tomorrow's episode in regards to stills and vague-ish comments by people who have seen the episode.
Buck & Tommy Related Chaos:
I'm going to start with the chaos: OLIVER AND LOU ARE DOING A JOINT INTERVIEW that was filmed today for Access Hollywood / Access Daily that will air tomorrow before the episode.
I am in total shock by this because I've been vocal that I didn't even think we'd get more interviews from these two before the season ended. I would have never dreamed that they'd have them doing a joint interview together.
This is a pretty huge (and good) sign, in my opinion. You wouldn't suddenly have two actors going out doing press together unless (from a marketing point of view) you're trying to promote that couple to the audience. This to me really does suggest they're planning on keeping Lou around and pushing BuckTommy.
I've heard crazy speculation about what the interview will be about but it airs before the episode so likely we won't get major spoilers. We'll likely see the two talking about their characters, what it's like working together and hinting at what is going to happen moving forward.
With that said, I'm really curious at how they're going to sell this on the show. We've already seen Ryan hitting the talking point that Eddie is straight in recent weeks, which seems to be an attempt to distancing themselves from Buddie. This interview tomorrow may possibly give us an idea where their heads are at moving forward.
Regardless, I think this is a strong indicator that Tommy isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I know some people are trying to downplay this as happening because Bi Buck was such a huge storyline but they could have easily just had Oliver on the show. Them having both of them makes this about their relationship, not just Buck coming out as Bi and that's a pretty big shift from the marketing we saw around episodes 4-5.
Lou also posted about it on his Instagram and Ryan liked it.
Also I cannot remember a time that they had Oliver doing interviews with his love interest on the show. Can anyone else?
The kiss on Instagram reels continues to do well. It's almost at 1.2 million, sitting currently at 1183k.
General Cast Information:
Let's start simple with the tweets coming out from press who saw tomorrow's episodes. The overwhelming theme with all of them seems to be a warning for us to prepare for some hurt. I'm preparing myself to watch Hen, Bobby and Eddie all go through hell tomorrow based on what we've seen on social media over the last 24 hours. So let's get into that.
Hen: Early today the official Instagram posted stills from the earlier episode where the councilwomen's son refuses treatment after he accident and dies (which leads to Hen being investigated). They then captioned this "A moment from the past can become so pivotal for your future" because clearly they want to hurt us. It also seems like that congress women is in the episode and we see her in one of the stills at the medal ceremony.
Bobby: It seems like he's going to have a nice father/son moment with Buck at some point this episode based on the stills and what Oliver has hinted at. But I think he'll also definitely be dealing with guilt.
Eddie: Dude I don't even know. Between Marisol being at the medal ceremony with him and Christopher and him taking a row boat out with Kim? This is going to get ugly.
All of the stills were really happy and we know that isn't what is happening in this episode so I'm pretty sure they're from the first 15 or 20 minutes. This show has been fucking with our heads with these promos.
We're very, very likely to get a sneak peak sometime tomorrow along with the Oliver&Lou interview.
I might attempt to make a ramble post talking about the interview prior to the episode depending on what time it airs.
So how are we all feeling? Cause I'm having all the fucking emotions.

My other theme this week is actually based on a quote from one of your recent posts! It’s “the gentlest futures” - one story where Buck’s going a bit crazy trying to guarantee those futures for everyone he loves and another where he’s already built his own!
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ (seeing the end chapter count on this story kind of broke my brain! But it definitely fit the vibe of the last chapter - sad about an ending but so grateful for the experience! Loving these last snippets though! Seeing them all thriving in their new roles and still being a family - it’s so beautiful! And watching Buck realize he doesn’t need to hold on so tight to the 118 because he’s never being abandoned again - love that for him!!)
⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️ (oh boy Buck didn’t anyone ever tell you not to make deals with sketchy supernatural authorities? I’m definitely worried about him but it is very on brand for him to sacrifice his sanity and soul to keep the people he loves safe. I love it! And I’m very intrigued by the nullification clause - a way for the whole curse to be gone huh? Interesting…)
- PCA <3
Oh I love this!!! Great theme.
123 or 1k for ⚡️(yeah! Can't believe I really made it to the end, and I'm glad it feels like it's wrapping up in an okay place):
---
“Buckley’s still here,” Bowman says to Hen. He snorts. “That’s a shame.”
So that’s how it’s going to be, then? They couldn’t have just ignored each other? Like professionals?
“Firefighter Buckley is a valued member of this team,” Hen fires back. And he loves her. He really does. But nothing she says to him is going to matter, when it comes to Buck. He has it out for Buck and he doesn’t respect Hen. They just need to try to get through this day with as few casualties as possible.
This endeavor proves to be a challenge. For one, the rescue itself is getting harder the longer it goes on. The people inside are struggling. For another, Bowman loudly disagrees with Hen’s slow but steady method of evacuation. They can knock a hole in the wall and pray, but it’s a load bearing wall and the house is already collapsing. The victims could be killed in seconds. Hence Hen’s plan to stabilize what they can before sawing a small, precise gap in the wall. They can hear the victims inside. Communicate through knocks and shouts. They know they have time.
Bowman also knows they have time. That doesn’t seem to matter to him, though.
“The quicker we get out of this shitshow, the better,” he grits, before instructing his crew to ignore Hen’s orders and knock down the wall anyway.
Buck has never seen anything like it, honestly. Just flagrant disregard for procedure. He may have more seniority than Hen, but she’s in charge of this scene. Eddie’s in charge of the whole damn thing. And Eddie told Bowman to assist the 118. Assist. Not take over.
A few of the 114 firefighters look hesitant for a second. Unsure of the protocol.
“Absolutely do not do that!” Hen says. She radios to Eddie. Explains what’s happening. Her voice is frantic.
But they do. They do it. And despite the 118’s best efforts to reduce the damage and rescue the victims, one of them dies.
☆☆☆
It’s a hard night. An impossible one.
Neither Eddie or Buck seem to know how to move forward from today’s events. They both feel horrible. Drained. Defeated. They both feel guilt, even though there is a clear culprit. Captain Bowman.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Yardley tells him afterwards, as they are sifting through so much paperwork Eddie’s vision starts to blur. “You did everything right, and a seasoned fire captain made a very bad call. You couldn’t and shouldn’t have anticipated that.”
Well, he might have. He’s heard all about what kind of man Bowman is. But Buck never had a bad word to say about his endangering people’s lives. It always sounded to Eddie that he was just a bully. Which sucks, but… Well, this is something more than that.
“And, Eddie,” Yardley continues. “Even if we couldn’t point the blame at one person… These are the sort of calls you’ll be on from here on out. They aren’t routine. People will die. And most of the time it won’t be on you. Do the best you can, and start counting the people that survive.”
And though Eddie knows it’s good advice, he doesn’t quite feel it.
“We saved fifty-seven residents today, Eddie,” Yardley says.
And it should have been fifty-eight.
“You’re right,” Eddie says.
When he goes home, Buck is in an even worse state. He’s scraped and bruised all over. He’s changed into warm clothes, and has wrapped himself in a blanket. He’s clearly still feeling the residual cold of the water. Eddie gets that. He was cold for a long time after the well. When Eddie finds him, he’s sitting up in bed, watching television. Brooke is asleep on his chest and he’s stroking her hair. Soothing himself, more than her, Eddie thinks.
“Hi,” Eddie says softly, dropping his bag on the floor and walking to the bed to kiss them both on their respective foreheads.
“Hey,” Buck whispers back.
“Where’s Chris?” Eddie asks.
“Friend’s house,” Buck says. “He begged. Thought it might be better anyway, tonight.”
“Which friend?”
“Duncan.”
“Is that the one with the ugly dogs?” Eddie asks.
Buck snorts. “They’re boxers. They’re sweet.”
“They’re hideous, but sure.”
Buck rolls his eyes. They’ve had this argument before. Eddie knows he’s right. Even Chris says they’re annoying.
“You okay?” Eddie asks. He walks away from the bed to change into sweats and a tank top. He’s not as cold as Buck. He didn’t spend very much time in the water.
Buck shrugs. “I feel awful.”
“Yeah, me too,” Eddie says. “There’s going to be an investigation into Bowman.”
“Hen wondered,” Buck mutters.
“She okay?” Eddie asks.
“She’s pissed.”
“No kidding,” Eddie sighs.
“I don’t get it y’know?” Buck says.
“Which part?” Eddie asks. “Because we already knew he was an ass by how he treated you.”
“Yeah, but…” He sighs. “Okay, when Bobby fired me-”
“Still hilarious, by the way,” Eddie says.
“When Bobby momentarily let me go, he said he didn’t think I understood how lucky I was to be a firefighter,” Buck says. “And to some degree, he was right. I’ve never been as stupid as Bowman, but I didn’t get it as much, then.”
---
96 for ⚖️ (Nullification clause will be important!):
---
No. He’s not. He’s obviously fucking not. This is going to be the rest of his life, and he’s going to be miserable, and Eddie can say all he wants about things being okay, but he doesn’t even want Buck like this. He made that clear. So nothing is going to be okay for Buck. That was the whole point of this, right? Nothing will be okay for Buck. It’ll be okay for everyone else.
“Just make it through the call,” Eddie says.
But it won’t end, then. It’ll never end. Maybe Billy Boils’ friends had the right idea, ensuring he’d be sent to the gallows.
Luckily, the call takes them towards two of the ten guests Buck could single out for punishment. Meaning, he can do it. He just needs a second. It’ll make some of this pressure go away. Give him some relief. He needs that. He needs that, and then he can focus on his job.
The scene in the penthouse is sort of absurd. It’s a dual-story suite. There’s a balcony from the upper level overlooking the living area. One of the police officers on the scene explains what has happened. Two brothers, twin sons of a wealthy businessman with quite the social media following built for themselves, are staying here. The one brother has pushed the other over the balcony, where he landed directly on a glass table below. There’s a lot of blood and agonized moaning.
The unharmed brother is sitting on a leather loveseat, cuffed. He looks dazed and teary-eyed. Potentially high. He doesn’t look mildly remorseful.
Buck can tell both brothers are targets for him. Qualified leads, or whatever. But he thinks he’ll go for the non-injured one first.
“How long have you all been here?” Bobby asks the police officer. “Why weren’t we called sooner?”
Buck ignores the response. As Eddie, Chim, and Hen work on the injured brother, Buck grabs a flashlight from Eddie’s med bag and wanders over to the cuffed one.
“What do you want?” He sneers at Buck. “An autograph?”
Buck literally has never heard of this man-child before today. But yeah, totally.
“To check you for a concussion,” Buck says.
“I haven’t hit my head,” he replies. “Just protocol, man,” Buck lies.
“Whatever,” the guy rolls his eyes.
Buck starts a phony version of a routine check. He flies through it, not very diligent.
“You’re clear,” he says at the end, then pats the guy on the shoulder. He’s not supposed to do something like that. But it doesn’t matter. It’s enough to get what he needs.
The scary thing is that what he sees isn’t even that extraordinary any more. The badness. The aura. The past he gets to see. It’s par for the course with what he’s been seeing lately. Misogyny, predatory sexual behaviour, general abuse of the people around him, the environment, and his wealth. Truly vapid and inhuman beliefs. Just… Grotesque. And it would have made Buck sick at first. Now, he just quickly chooses the worst possible fate and calls it a day.
But the problem is, when Buck is done, he doesn’t feel any better. No itch has been scratched. No pressure has been relieved. He feels awful.
His feels a constant thrum of panic. Why isn’t it lessening? Why isn’t it going away? This wasn’t the deal he made. The quota isn’t supposed to consistently increase or disappear. Right? Nemesis didn’t say anything about that. Did she? Because Buck… He can’t… He can’t live like this.
He tries again with the other brother. Touching his arm briefly as he helps lift a backboard onto a gurney. Same shit past. Same punishing future. Same… Same nothing. No relief. Nothing at all.
⚖️
Bobby sends him home. He doesn’t get to talk to Eddie, the way Eddie wanted to. He gets back to the station and vomits, so overwhelmed by what he’s experiencing. The physical side and the abject dread.
“I’m still worried this is residual from your illness in the fall,” Bobby says. “I’m worried about you, Buck.”
Who fucking isn’t?

Costume Meta 7x03
so there aren't al l that many costumes to talk about this week from a min cast perspective as pretty much everyone is either in uniform, or a costume they've been wearing for the previous two episodes!
I do have a few things to talk about though so I'm still writing this meta and then I'll be gearing myself up for next week when I have a feeling I'll be up to my eyeballs in new costumes!!
Check theory
The danger around Jared played out - he large bold check signalled that he would be in danger - and he met a grim end!
Pink Theory
I feel like I'm spending every episode playing spot the bright pink and this one came to the pink party as well - we have Corey's dad in this pink sweater and then Corey's two siblings in pink.
Its really interesting to me that we're not seeing this bright pink on any of our mains up to this point (Athena has worn pale pink but not bright pink)- its always been on guest cast (Marisol, Lola, Norman, the mom trapped in the car) and there's a fairly even split between the characters who are in one episode and the multi episode arc characters.
I've already pointed this out but the various traits associated with bright magenta/fuchsia pinks are as follows
Things that are considered positive traits for this shade of pink are; intensity, acceptance, kindness and it's supportive and uplifting nature. It's connected to naive love (as in lust rather than the passionate and enduring love of red) can also be considered a nurturing colour.
Negative traits are; intensity, volatility, arrogant and impatient, irritability and irritating and frustration. it is also said to be a stress inducing colour and is said to be overly emotional and childish.
Stripe Theory
Then we have the stripes - Corey (who I'm convinced is autistic but thats maybe just me projecting!!) is in stripes pretty much the entire time.
The only exception is when the family is on Manzanillo - when he is wearing a watery themed shirt - again separating him from most of the rest of the family - who are all in floral prints (older brother is all in white and not the floral Hawaiian prints but he and his sister (I think they're meant to be twins?!) switch between who is wearing the bold print and who is in a white top throughout the episode)
Mom wears stripes as well - before she gets onto the ship - we see her in this striped coat. Dad and the sister also wear stripes and check scarves, showing that the entire family is in peril, but the largest amount of stripes are saved for the ones who will be in the most danger - which makes total sense from a pattern theory perspective.
An amusing aside that had me giggling - this top is shear perfection when paired with the 118 deciding their new moto is who cares!!😂
Right off to the firehouse to finish up! - I've mentioned before how uniform variation is used to separate out a character where needed (I wrote about it in my 6x09 meta) so here in the firehouse we have two separations going on - Buck and Eddie are the only ones in t-shirts - separating them from everyone else.
In connection to this separating them from the rest of the firehouse crew is that yellow rag Buck is waving around - it feels a little bit like that red one we saw him with several times in season 6 - the season of red flags.
In the same way t hat red cloth was like a red flag, this reads like a yellow flag - now yellow flags are interesting. In shipping terms they were historically a signal of quarantine (this isn' the case any more), and in sports generally they are used to denote hazardous conditions (motor racing and on beaches relating to surf and currents).
But the more interesting yellow flag concept is the yellow flag in a relationship - generally speaking they are indicators of things that could become problematic and turn into red flags if not dealt with or communicated about (yup communication again). Paired with the fact that Buck and Eddie have been 'singled' out through their uniform, its telling us issues ahead (even if we didn't know about them) and that its their dynamic that is going to be tested and that they are going to need to communicate.
Now all those yellow hoses hanging around in the back ground and then one hose physically connecting them - is certainly a choice (remember they could have used one of the non yellow hoses if it wasn't important) and a pretty loud one. I go on and on about yellow lines of communication, a lot, and I have in my metas for this season so far, but here we have another example of yellow ropes.. lines, cables etc.
The really really key thing here is that we haven't actually seen Buck and Eddie connected by a yellow anything since the end of season 3 and having not seen them connected with a yellow anything since season 3 - when their respective yellow lines got cut/burnt. This one here is about , a yellow line of communication being re-established. What adds to this is the directorial choices - the yellow flag is waves around before they connect themselves with a yellow line (hose) - as a piece of directorial foreshadowing I am in love - its telling us the Buck is the one who is the creator of the yellow flags (read his jealousy) and he is the one with the yellow rag (in the same way he was the one with the red rag previously), but that it will ultimately lead to Buck and Eddie reconnecting after those flags are raised and dealt with. I cannot stress enough the importance of that yellow line between them being reconnected - it really speaks of their communication improving and that we'll see them operating on a level we haven't seen before - they cut their yellow lines at the time when Eddie was changing his will, and whilst they have spoken on important topics etc since then, there has always been something in between them - they haven't had a proper full cards on the table conversation. My feeling is that we might be about to get that (especially combined with what we know from what Oliver and Ryan have teased!)
Then there is Chimney who is separated from everyone else by virtue of being the only one in a long sleeved shirt. If you watch the scene through, and pay attentiion to the background, you'll see all the firefighters in either short sleeve shirts or wearing bomber jackets. there is one exception - a guy carrying a medical bag who I'm pretty sure is meant to be a representaion of Hen's reinstatment to the 118 as he crosses Chim at the time Chim announces Hen has been reinstated!
Thats all from me this week - hope you enjoyed! I'm off to prepare myself for Thursday night!!!

I wish you would write something...where Buck and Eddie are already together, but there's a big 118 get together, and they have a few drinks (not too many!) and they somehow reveal the relationship (they hadn't before for some reason)
Oooh i really like this idea!
They kiss, it's a small one, just pressing their lips.
"Gross" Christopher says in the back seat.
" Let's go" Buck says.
They're leaving Christopher at Pepa's place, he's going to have a sleepover while Buck and Eddie go out with the 118 to a new bar near the station.
" Are you going to be okay kid?" Eddie asks while Buck gets Christopher's stuff.
" Yeah, Samara has a new game and I really want to play it! also Santiago and I want to make an iron farm in our minecraft world" He loves spending time with his cousins.
" Have fun buddy! don't stay up too late" Buck says to him
~
They finally got together two weeks ago, it's really new but both of them know this is going to be forever.
Pretending not to be together at work is really hard, years of secretly wanting each other have made it very difficult for them to spend more than half an hour without some kind of display of affection.
" Are you ready?" Buck asks.
" I'm going to try my best" Eddie says.
They want to have just a little bit more of time for themselves, they love the 118 but both of them know they're going to tease them them a lot, also they're going to have to deal with HR.
~
Everything it's fine, they're all joking, eating and maybe they have been drinking a little bit too much.
Just enough to be a little more talkative and careless.
" Okay let's talk about dates" Chimney says, he's also just a little bit drunk " What would be a good date? Maddie and I want to try new things"
" Me and Athena went to an art class once, they taught us how to paint with watercolors, my painting was kinda funny" Bobby said with a little smile, leaning towards Athena.
" Well me and Hen went to a space themed bar once, it was awesome, the drinks were really interesting"
Buck's face lit up and he said " Me and Eddie went to a pottery class a week ago, it was amazing, we had some wine and we made two cups, mine was prettier, right babe?"
Everyone looked at them, Eddie was looking at him with heart eyes while Buvk didn't realized the impact of what he just said.
" You went on a date?!"
I wish you would write a fic where...

So I’ve worked out my theory based off everything we know, plus the stills.
My theory is that somehow the subject of an open relationship will come up. I know this has been suggested, and IMO, maybe it’s the person at the cafe (because I think we’re assuming that picture we saw weeks ago of Oliver in his work clothes at a cafe is this ep?). Maybe they know Tommy, maybe they’re just trying to flirt with Buck or Tommy, maybe a number is offered and they don’t know either of them.
And I know people complain that they don’t want communication to be the issue bc BuckTommy are so good at it, but hear me out. Would it ultimately be a communication issue (in some form)? Yes. But also.
In my head, he (Evan) gets upset at the suggestion that this person may (or may not) have had something with Tommy (or wants it, or some variation of that), which led to him assuming that Tommy either a)has been seeing other people the whole time, and/or b) wants to. So ofc Buck goes to his sister in a tizzy bc he has strong feelings for this man he’s been with for six months and things have been great and Bobby is finally back and blah blah blah, but he’s not sure he can do this whole thing of an open relationship if that’s what Tommy wants.
Queue Josh walking by and being like “open relationship? Tommy Kinard? Wait, you might be available soon? And/or Tommy” at which point Maddie explains what’s going on to Josh and he’s like “oh you sweet little baby bi.”
So then we get a talking to about how Tommy likely wanted Evan to have the option bc (multiple reasons but I’m going with the obvs stereotype: some bisexual people want access to both men and women regardless of relationship status). And Buck is like “but I’m very secure in my relationship so that must mean he wants to see other people.
Again, queue Josh laughing. “No no, Buck. Tommy Kinard is so beautiful in the WeHo community that any time he’s been single, a bat signal goes up. Before you, that man was a regular at the gay bars, especially during theme nights. I’m assuming you’ve heard about the karaoke trivia? He was the winner three years running.”
“Your point?”
“My point is he maybe shows up once a month now and doesn’t even participate because he’s off the market. Anytime I see him out now, it’s one drink and he’s gone because he’s got somewhere else to be.”
At which point we get the explanation from Maddie about him definitely being sure of his feelings this time, and that he should probably tell Tommy.
So then we get the loft scene, Evan explaining how he talked to them and Tommy’s lil smiley face being all “I never talked to anyone else, I just wanted you to have an open line of communication if that was something you were interested in.”
We get something akin to “I’m not interested in anything but you. Maddie said after our first date that I wasn’t sure of my feelings, but I’ve had a lot of clarity on that over the past few months, and I think I panicked because the last time I said this, if wasn’t from an honest place.”
And then we get “said what”
“I love you.”
Kiss. End scene. Roll credits.
(Okay maybe the end is more wishful thinking but I think the theory has legs!)

Hi I’m interested in writing, but idk how and where to start. Any advice?
Starting your writing adventure can seem daunting, but it’s actually the best time to have fun and discover what the craft means to you. And to get started with writing, I have a few basic concepts to consider.
Whether you’re writing poetry, a novel, short stories, nonfiction, or even screenwriting, the below concepts are versatile, and work as general steps on how to start.
Let’s dig in!
Start small, build a habit
The first thing to do to get started with writing is to actually start writing. Earth-shattering response, I know.
Start with finding a small routine that works best for your schedule and try it for about two weeks to gauge if changes are needed.
For example, you can spend five minutes during lunch every day to type whatever is on your mind. Then, once that becomes an instinctual habit, increase it to 10 minutes. You can also experiment with half-hour increments every other day, or, your routine becomes writing a few hours on the weekend because of your work schedule.
There’s no magical writing routine you should force yourself to do. Everyone has their own pace, and it’s up to you to find yours. There’s no wrong answer to this.
Experiment, adapt, and find your flow. Finding a routine can take a few tries, and that routine can also change after a significant life event (you can also have a different version of the routine for low energy days). So no need to be rigid with yourself. But once you find your flow, do it as consistently as possible.
As for what to write: write about your day, let out an emotion, tell a story from childhood, practice talking as a character; whatever fancies you at that moment. As long as you’re writing, whether it’s 5 or 5,000 words, you’re doing it right!
P.S. Looking for more on building a writing habit? Our course “Write to Play” helps you get started with writing and learn to enjoy it! Our Discord Community also hosts weekly writing sprints and other activities, so you can connect with fellow writers and work on goals together. Both are free to join.
Ask why you want to write
Writing may look like a glamorous career or hobby, but as with many things, it takes effort. And your level of writing effort depends on why you write in the first place.
Some people get started with writing because they think publishing something will make quick bucks. But it should never be about the money (although money is a nice bonus). Writing is about community and entertainment via the oldest form of connecting with others: storytelling.
We write because we love to tell stories. We write because we want to share a message with others through written expression. We write because we are natural creators of worlds and characters that weave adventures.
So ask yourself why you really want to write. Do you want to connect with others through your personal experiences? Is there a message you want to share with the world? Do you want to entertain the masses with meaningful adventure? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, great news! You’re on the right track.
If you need a “why” example, I’ll give you my reason for writing poetry and fiction. It’s to advocate mental health and self-worth.
After going through a personal journey of discovering self-acceptance, I want people to follow their hearts and core desires, and to love themselves for who they are. Because that’s true happiness–valuing your core identity.
Genre and theme
Genre and theme are two vital things you need to get started with writing.
Genre is fairly straightforward. Most aspiring writers already have one in mind. However, if you’re not sure where to start, think about the genres that your favorite books, movies, or TV shows are, and go from there.
Do you like epic fantasy and adventure? Try the action genre. Do you enjoy dystopian settings questioning the ethics of society? Society and worldview are great for getting deep and philosophical. Or do you love a character rising to the top with a successful career or sports tournament? Look into performance and status.
Theme takes a little more effort, but if you spend time on your “why,” that will help significantly! Because the theme you write about, from a poem to a novel, typically derives from your “why.”
Take my own “why” again as an example. Since it’s about mental health, I spend my days on themes of self-discovery, societal influence on “success,” inner demons, acceptance–the list goes on. But they all come from my overarching goal to show how valuing your true self brings real happiness.
Here’s another example: say you have a personal experience of winning a sports tournament because you pushed yourself, even though you wanted to give up. Perhaps that’s inspiration for a project with the message, “with effort comes reward.” That theme opens all kinds of opportunities, from looking at the best-suited genre to what kind of story and character to write about.
Which leads to my next concept!
Characters and story basics
Genre and theme play right into your characters and story. This is where we dive into some mechanics of storytelling, starting with the concept of story and characters, and then how the theme and genre affect them to create a basic project outline.
To start, your story is the external sequence of obstacles your character faces, leading to learning the theme at the end. Your character is the one going through the story’s external events while internally processing them.
Your theme then determines the “what” in your story: what message the story shares to readers at the end, and what core events lead to the theme reveal. Meanwhile, the character(s) are the “who” being affected by the theme throughout the story.
With that, the theme determines the beginning and end of your story, as well as the path of growth for your character to experience. This is the bare minimum you need when writing a project, like a novel or short story. Even if you don’t use outlines.
For the end of the story, we already mentioned the theme reveal; and that’s typically portrayed through the character facing a final challenge–like a big boss fight. And through that challenge, the character grows from learning the theme. So the theme dictates the end of the story by what the final event and message are, and who the character becomes after growth (or lack of, for tragic ending).
From there, we can move backwards to the beginning of the story. In storytelling, the ending is the opposite of the beginning. So, if the story’s end has a character learning the theme through a final challenge, then the story’s beginning introduces that character with a major flaw to overcome by learning the theme; while starting the sequence of obstacles that eventually leads to the theme reveal at the end.
Just like that, you have the theme crafting the basics of your story with a dynamic character!
But let’s dive further with genre. Genre helps plot the “how,” as in, how your story and character’s journey are told (i.e. action, romance, etc). Each genre has specific conventions for a story to follow, thus acting as a great template to plot lengthier projects like novels.
For example, romance genres start the story with two characters meeting as potential love interests (the meet cute), and typically end with them falling in love. Thus, if you choose romance as your genre, then you work your theme, story, and character(s) into those parameters.
Once you do that, you’ll notice you’ll have a basic outline for a project. Shall we go through an exercise to see the magic?
Let’s go back to the theme example of “with effort comes reward,” and combine it with a character, story, and genre.
Based on that theme, the character needs a major flaw at the story’s beginning, one to overcome by learning the lesson. Also, the beginning starts a sequence of obstacles that must lead to the character getting rewarded from effort.
So let’s create a character who believes everything comes easily to them–someone born into a rich family and had everything handed to them at a young age. That’s the flaw. And for the sequence of obstacles to start their growth, we’ll have the character lose their inheritance, forced to figure out how to live on their own.
These obstacles become the hardships of living without wealth. That way, by the end of the story, the character comes face to face with the theme, realizing if they want “reward” (or perhaps fulfillment), they must put effort into what they do. The story thus ends with the character growing and understanding it’s worth working toward something.
Now add the romance parameters mentioned above for genre. After the character loses their inheritance, they meet someone at a local store; one who becomes friends and helps tackle the character’s personal dilemma. This also helps the character realize genuine happiness as they also fall in love. Therefore, they find their path through their own efforts, without inherited wealth, and live happily ever after.
Tackle that mindset
There’s only one mindset every writer needs to have before they get started with writing, and that’s this phrase:
Perfection is failure.
Trust me, as a healing perfectionist, that sounds wild. But here’s something crazier.
Not even your published work will be perfect.
You will always reread your work and think a word needs tweaking, or a character needs different reactions in dialogue. Some published books still have typos, too.
With projects like novels, most writers never finish their first draft because they spend time and energy editing the story as they write. To perfect it as they go.
But you don’t know how the novel goes until you write to the end of it.
Like creativity, your project will change and flow. Especially in the beginning, as your first draft is the discovery draft; the foundation of the project. That’s not the time for tweaking, but the time for building.
So allow your first draft to be messy. Get the whole concept out first. Then, you will have better knowledge on how to edit the entire project. Not just parts of it that might change anyway as you get closer to the end. Don’t waste your precious time and creativity like that.
This is the same for me with poetry. I always focus on the poem’s core message first, then I’ll play with pretty prose and rhyming.
So focus on the journey of writing the draft and getting the full idea down. Again, creativity is fluid. Allow your writing to be the same.
My favorite book coach discusses perfectionism with the analogy of baking a cake. You can’t put icing on a cake without letting it fully bake first. Finish baking your draft to the end, then add the icing edits.
And there you have it! Those are my five main concepts to remember to get started with writing. And those are merely the tip of the iceberg of what the craft has to offer you–but remember, this is the time to have fun and discover!
Are you ready to dive in and get started with writing? I can’t wait to see what you create.
Happy writing!

notes & thoughts from philm club 10/19/15!
THIS IS SOOO NOSTALGIC TO ME this is the era where i was catching most younows live! i am 95% sure i saw this live at 15 years old! i am 24 now! i have included a vintage phanniecore image from the time period! lets reflect!
dan ripped his jeans at tatinof leeds. so the wad time wasnt the first time
anahita mentioned omg where is she now. with her 20 trillion younow bucks or whatever that stuff was
“you know what i mean” and fluffing his hair in that one specific way is 2015 dan’s “what can i say” while checking an invisible watch
friendiversary. oh babes......
“we’re pal creators” :)
another thing dan used to say: “this guy” while staring into the camera and gesturing at phil. nowadays he just screams
“went to sheffield, that was lols” dan loves to say shit
WHAT DID DAN WHISPER. INFURIATINGLY ALMOST AUDIBLE. LIP READING EXPERTS ?
“ive had the fire on” potential gas leak stream, love you london apartment 1
WHY DID IT TAKE THEM 30 MINUTES TO MENTION THAT APPARENTLY TABINOF HAS JUST COME OUT?
‘as if you guys have coffee tables for our book’ WE DO NOW BITCH, WE'RE OLD! (i dont. actually.)
instantly calling it the bible. well that hasnt changed. the phible
OH MY GOD I HAVE SUCH VIVID MEMORIES OF TAKING AND HAVING PICTURES OF MYSELF WITH THE INSIDE COVER OVER MY FACE LIKE THAT. BUT I JUST SPENT LIKE 20 MINUTES LOOKING AND ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FIND THEM!!!!! lost media.
i did find this though: a relic of the time. 2015 snapchat face swap filter, anyone? [i do want to post this accursed artifact bc its funny but not without having directly next to it: im a grown man now, dont she/her me]
dan describing phils eye color i could never think you were straight my 2015 king
"well done phiw" words i remember deep in my soul
not directly related to anything happening, i just thought about it: i saw a post the other day about how dan and phil spent their 20s being silly for the enjoyment of 12 year old girls on the internet and have been thinking about it ever since. i just wanna hold space for a moment of appreciation for that. idk if it was yalls experience but i got a lot of misogyny based shame of my interests because of the whole societal "anything a teen "girl" likes must be inherently ridiculous and made fun of mercilessly" thing [especially related to dnp watching] but they never had any sort of resentment for that position never did anything but be patient with us and love us and give us nice things to chew on. thank you danphil <3
"get over it. get over it. get over it. get over it. you cynic. get over it. right right right right so what? he enjoys a themed drink from a coffee chain thats everywhere. get over it, get over it." dan relax. why do i remember this specific part so vividly. was this in a vyou1 compilation that i watched over and over like cocomelon
dan on evan peters in AHS: "id be his victim" i see you
47:30 PHIL IMITATING DAN'S HAND GESTURES WHILE HE TALKS ABOUT THE WALKING DEAD I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS CLIP A FEW WEEKS AGO BUT HAD ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHERE TO GO LOOKING FOR IT!!!!!!!
god this was the era of free and haikyu real ones remember dans body pillow
pop culture of 2015 reviews
"phils got an agenda!" why do i rememeber posting "phil has the gay agenda" after he said that. we were so annoying in the 2015 times
chair quiz all depends on the first question. if im hungry its cheese and i get purple. if not its trees and i get green
phil "sneaking in" a "phil and dan" hes so cute
them snorting at each other "that was a deep sinister pig" they have never changed
(THIS POINT ONLY) TIT PRESHOW PLAYLIST SPOILERS IF ANYONE GIVES A FUCK the way they loved our singing to toxic so much that they make sure to give us a big singalong right before the show on every preshow playlist now.... hot to go <3. i heard a recording of an early show where it was good luck babe and thankfully i think they realized that good luck babe is really hard to sing and made it hot to go ever since then
time to get parasocial dan used all his phone data so he had to use phils hotspot. surely they just have the same phone plan now
WAD foreshadowing my boy is talking about the apocalypse
phil is going to go cook dinner??? an era before deliveroo??
dan talking about uploading on dinof it was a different time
ok those are my thoughts!!! im a newish phannie blog (not really. i had one on my old account in the 2015 era which i dont want to use anymore cause i was 15.) so welcome feel free to hang out etc

Devlog 2024-09-13
It's Friday– again!
I have three more days left in the bushveld before returning to civilisation. I've got a bit of a tan, and the little one is loving the wild bucks, babboons, mangooses (mangeese? We just call them "muishonde" or mouse-dogs as a literal translation from Afrikaans) and monkeys to the extend that I'm interrupted every few hours to go on walk to look for some wildlife.
I've been making solid progress. I know it's not super interesting reading that I wrote more content each week, but that's what it is for now. We're chipping away at the work that still needs to be done for the next public release.
In the meantime, Tae has been drawing more portraits from our newest Captain tier patrons. (They get to add their portrait to the game, either of themselves or their OC, whichever they prefer.) If you've ever wondered what that process looks like, wonder no more!
The process is really simple. Once a patron signs up to the captain tier, I usually reach out in a few days to get some references. References can be selfies, random photos off the internet, mixing and matching your OC, we've even had references from Sims, like the example below.
Once we have the reference, Tae takes a day or three to do lineart:
We then contact the patron, checking if they are happy and if we need to make any changes.
After that, we do the colouring and shading, giving the patron another chance to request any minor changes.
Once that's done, the portrait gets added to the game's next release.
I'm speaking out of turn, but the team is arranging a Halloween themed Infinite Stars fan art competition where the winner wins a portrait commission for Infinite Stars. The announcement will probably go out on our Discord in a few days.
That's it from me for now.
Stay safe, be kind to others and enjoy your weekend!

These last few weeks I've been thinking a lot about Buck/Tommy and I've come to the conclusion that they don't know how to properly introduce Tommy into the series. First of all there is the visit to Buck's loft where they kiss, just like that, without a link that takes us there, then there is the theme of Chimney's bachelor party when he shows up there dressed like Eddie not as Miami Vice even if he is LT. Castillo, with a Henley and jeans, it was very out of place, but we also have what seems strangest to me, he's supposed to be a helicopter pilot, search and rescue, but he shows up at the hospital with soot on his face as if he had just coming from a fire only to see Buck in the hospital, they kiss, making Buck's face covered in soot and the rest adding up to 1+1 and now we have Buck's come out to everyone except Eddie and Maddie. Does a firefighter air service pilot also put out fires like a normal firefighter? I don't think he does because his job is to provide air assistance. That's why I say that Tommy's appearances are added to justify his romance with Buck, but they are non sense scenes without connection to any specific plot, and the strangest thing is all those people who see chemistry there, which for them is already endgame when we don't have that plot, we're just going to take Buck out of the closet and give him a love interest who is a man. And then we have Buddie whose plots are elaborate and have a context. With Tommy I think the only thing that can be saved is the basketball game.
Perfectly said anon. I couldn’t have said it better if I said it.

Finally we’ve got the new beginnings! Just met and just married! So much potential ahead of them!
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ (they be honeymooning! Bring on that newlywed bliss! I mean they’re basically always like that for each other but now they’ve got an excuse and by god are they gonna use it!)
📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 (buck so would be a librarian in another live. Him being all nerdy and helpful and amazing with kids - especially christopher - watch out eddie! You’re gonna fall in love before you know it!)
I’m obsessed with your work and eternally grateful that you share it - but you already knew this :p hope you have fun writing these!
- PCA <3
Oh love this theme!!!!! You are so kind, PCA. I always look forward to your asks.
63 for ⚡️ (Yesssss more honeymoon phase!)
---
Eddie finishes saying goodbye to Adriana and Ravi, says a final goodbye to Christopher, and then puts Buck out of his misery at last by joining him in the truck.
“We are four minutes behind schedule,” Buck chides as Eddie buckles his seatbelt.
“Tragic,” Eddie smirks.
“It will be when we don’t stop for coffee,” Buck warns.
Starting off their honeymoon with a very serious threat. Interesting tactic. Height of romance, really.
“Buck,” Eddie complains. “It’s only an hour and twenty minutes of driving. Surely we can spare a coffee run.”
Buck smirks. “Fine. But I’ll find a way to get my four minutes back at some point.”
Oh, Eddie is sure. He knows who he married.
“Just don’t take it out on the coffee.”
🗲🗲🗲
The rental in San Clemente is literally perfect.
They’d discussed going further away. Mexico, maybe. But between the wedding, the house, and planning for another kid, they decided not to spend more than necessary. Plus, they already live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. They didn’t need to go very far.
The moment they walk into the little condo, Buck knows they made the right choice. It’s a tidy one bedroom with a full kitchen, a king sized bed, a big shower, a private ocean-view balcony, and a walk down to the beach.
“This is incredible,” Eddie grins, walking out onto the balcony.
“We are going to enjoy this balcony,” Buck agrees.
Eddie shoots him a look. “Buck…”
“Honeymoon rules apply here, Eddie,” Buck tells him.
“Honeymoon rules?” Eddie asks skeptically. “What are those?”
“Making them up as I go along,” Buck informs him.
Eddie rolls his eyes, but he’s smiling.
Yeah. They’re definitely going to enjoy the balcony.
☆☆☆
Neither of them has had a honeymoon before. Neither of them is particularly accustomed to vacations, either. Though, perhaps Buck has some of the old Peruvian resort lifestyle living in him somewhere. Needless to say, it takes them both a minute to figure out what to do with literally nothing they need to do. Buck unpacks the groceries. Eddie searches the cupboards for glassware and pours them wine in nice, big blue-tinted glasses. They manage to relax on the balcony for, like, an hour, before they both get a bit twitchy.
“We aren’t sit and stare at the sea people, are we?” Eddie asks.
“No, I don’t think we are.” Buck agrees.
“What do honeymoon rules say about swimming while slightly intoxicated?” Eddie posits.
A little ill-advised. But it’s not like they’re shit faced. And, well, Eddie doesn’t have a lot of ill-advised fun stories.
“Oh, let me review with the board,” Buck teases. “Hmm. Apparently it’s fine if we conveniently forget we’re first responders.”
“And parents?” Eddie suggests.
“Oh, yeah. Good call.”
“Then maybe we can have some fun?” Eddie wiggles his eyebrows.
“I like the sound of that.”
---
51 for 📖 (YEAH EDDIE WILL):
---
No one is home.
As he drives away, he just hopes the gesture will be appreciated and not seen as totally creepy.
viii.
It’s a long time before Buck hears back about the gift. Which is good in that, he doesn’t get in trouble for abusing the library cardholder database. He spends two weeks nervous he’s going to hear about that every shift.
When he does hear back about it, it’s the fall. School starts up again, and Christopher is enrolled in the aftercare programs. Buck is relieved when he sees his name on the lists. Like it’s a sign that perhaps things are okay.
He sees Christopher again before he sees Eddie. Right away during the first week of school.
“Chris!” Buck exclaims happily when he sees him come through the library doors. “How are you, pal? It’s been a while.”
“I’m good,” Christopher answers happily. Then, he walks over, and gives Buck a quick hug. “Thank you for my books, Buck. They made me smile.”
Buck ends the hug quickly. It’s kind of a discouraged behavior. Though a gray area when the kid initiates. But he’s touched. Happy the gift had an impact, and that Chris remembers. Even after a few months.
“You’re welcome,” Buck replies. “I’m really glad to see you back, kiddo.”
Chris smiles. “Thanks, Buck.”
It’s a few more days until he sees Eddie. When he does, he’s sort of concerned. It’s not exactly the Eddie he remembers. His hair is shorn. His eyes are tired. There’s a strange pattern of bruises on his forearms. He looks rough. If they were actually friends, Buck would ask him about it. But all he can do is quietly observe.
“It’s good to see you again,” Buck smiles as Eddie approaches the front desk before picking Chris up. “We missed Chris around here.”
Eddie nods. “I, uh… I wanted to thank you. Your gift was really appreciated. Sorry I didn’t say anything sooner.”
“Hey, that’s not why I sent it. Just wanted you both to know… Well, that I’m really sorry.”
“Thank you,” Eddie says. “That’s kind.”
There’s a hollowness in his voice. Like he’s accepted a lot of condolences lately.

Costume Meta 7x02
We are short on the costumes to look at this week as we continue this multi episode arc, so this meta is going to be a pretty short one! I’ve had a pretty busy weekend, so things have worked out for me and its also the reason why I'm only posting this on a Tuesday evening!!!!
There are a few things to point out before I get to the main costumes - we have more bright pink in play here - on the Mom in the car that got hit by the drunk driver. I still have no idea what its trying to tell us a this point, but I have my eyes peeled for more bright pink to appear in the next couple of episodes and see if I can unravel its use.
On the non costume front, on the ship - its a yellow cable that leads to the bomb that ensures communication cannot be restored to the ship when nit explodes - the fact the communications engineer also dies, just re-emphaises the point. Communication is a key theme in this episode.
Back to costumes an in the same vein as the cable, we see Captain O’s deputy in his yellow rain coat when she gives the abandon ship order, and the yellow wire is prominent on the radio when she tells him to do so. He is now the one responsible for communicating her order to the rest of the ship and getting everyone onto the life boats. This is good and effective communication and we see the results of it as we are shown the ship being evacuated.
Hen and Karen are the only ones we get in a new costume this week.
Lets start with Karen - its an interesting choice - we have her in this navy blue shirt and trousers combo with a brown belt. the top has blue and green Richelieu (cutwork) design on the sleeves and the trousers are also decorated with Richelieu. There are two things at play with this costume choice - the almost entirely navy outfit places her in the same category as Chim, Buck and Eddie. this is very very intentional - Karen mirroring/paralleling them places her in the same position they hold - Karen is meant to be there to show that Hens thought process is flawed and as an outsider to proceedings thats really important for the audience - we need to see that Hen isn't this flawless captain that we've been shown up to this point. The other thing it's designed to do is maintain Hen as separate from everyone else. This visual device helps the script re-enforce things so that when she is then spurred into trying to get hold of Bobby and Athena we are focused on her because of her 'otherness' visually she stands out and we obviously need her to to help drive the narrative forward.
The other thing with Karens costume is the green and blue Richelieu which creates this visual representation of storm clouds swirling and moving in - a subtle reference, not only to Hen's currently cloudy viewpoint on things, but also to the impending storm brewing out in the ocean around the cruise ship. I really love it when they can drop subtle hints like this in set and costuming!
THen we have Hen!
Putting her into her white tee, jeans, green sneakers and this printed silk jacket, and not showing her changing out of her uniform into said outfit while the rest of the firearm are still in uniform helps to separate her from the ‘three Judases’ its a really loud and obvious visual way of separating her from the not only the three boys, but also from the firehouse as a whole. The way the scene is set up helps with this as well -she is on the same side of the bench and room as Chim, Buck and Eddie, until they question her version of events (Eddie is the one to actually ask the question and he is the one dressed differently to Chim and Buck - this isn't about putting him in opposition to them, more just visually signalling that he's the one to ask the important question that we as viewers should be ready for) and then she moves away from them and becomes visually in opposition to them. Its the perfect example of costume, set and direction working in perfect harmony to tell the story visually - we don't actually need to hear whats been said, we can tell it all from the way its shown to us visually.
Hens jacket is a fascinating choice - it plays into a couple of themes we’ve seen in action over the two episodes we’ve had thus far. I did write a little bit about it when we got the first stills of it (which I now cannot find - stupid tumblr search!) but essentially it is a jacket that has various places around California - the golden gate bridge, the redwood trees in Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, etc. as well as the victorian style rose pattern running along the cuffs and edges of the jacket.
The pink roses are a really lovely touch - and one I picked up on specifically because Hen is not a flowery kind of person, so seeing them on her means they are important. Pink roses are generally considered to signify a strong friendship or family bond - something that is ultimately at the heart of matters - the fire family are just that - a family and they might have argument's etc, but they still love each other as a family and will go all out to be there for each other. Its a low key piece of
then we have all that water - do we even need to talk about its meaning?!! Its a literal visual play on the entire them of this arc - water! We all know that water is a really key theme that 911 uses a lot in its storytelling, whether thats big water based events such at the Tsunami or this cruise ship disaster, or smaller low key water theming such as the rain being present at so many of the disasters we see. I'm interested that we now have it appearing on Hen - because it hasn't really been connected to her in many of her personal story arcs (by this I mean arcs such as her deciding and training to be a doctor, Henren's journey through parenthood, the ambulance crash or even Karens lab blowing up last season) so its interesting that we're now seeing her pulled into the water theming in a visual way like this. It is also a play on the two aspects of this episode - there is the loud water theming of the Cruise ship, but there is also the fact Hen has landed in hot water/ deep water.
Hen is also wearing her 'H' necklace, not her 'K' one. This is important because her necklaces tend to be a visual indicator of what her arc is about - the 'H' is worn when it's about her specifically and not her marriage/ family, which is when we tend to see the 'K' heart pendant being worn.
Thats all from me this week! Thank you as always for reading and I hope you enjoyed the shortness of this post - I doubt many of the others will be this short 😂
