in honour of stray kids’ 5th anniversary

i would like to say that in may of 2022, i was introduced to these eight korean men in an attempt to finally get me into kpop. needless to say, it worked. my friend showed me the thunderous studio choom and i was WHIPPED. it all started with the boy with long hair…

the following week, i fell ill with the flu and decided that my time would be best spent looking up stray kids funny moments on youtube. that’s when i did some research, finding that they were a group of eight men from JYP entertainment called bang chan, lee know, changbin, hyunjin, han, felix, seungmin, and I.N. back then, i found it difficult to differentiate between seungmin and I.N, so i opted for my first ever bias, lee minho.

gradually, i got more and more invested in this group, learning that felix and bang chan were australian, lee know likes cats, han grew up in malaysia and so on. my first ever stray kids mv premiere was circus. i remember distinctly staying up until 12:30am on a school night just to see it. by then my bias had turned out to be bang chan.

soon enough, i had learnt all there is to learn, seen all there is to see, and had gotten my friends into them. i was on cloud (district) 9. by the time they announced their second mini-album MAXIDENT, i had the NOEASY album, bang chan as my wallpaper, astronaut as my favourite song, and a crippling addiction. that’s when i started questioning my bias again… the savage kim seungmin threw himself towards me with full force and his oreo hair. i was officially done for.

now, i consider myself a full-fledged kpop stan with photo cards galore. i had this vision that myself and my two best friends would get tickets to see them in sydney. i bought the tickets, not realising that my parents would have an opinion on my well-being. although i had enough money to pay for the two-day trip myself, they selfishly denied us of going. to say i spiralled into a depressive state is an understatement. i cried for hours at the fact that i wouldn’t see my saviours live and in the flesh.

i sold those tickets reluctantly. although i was lucky enough to see harry styles in sydney the day after my birthday this year, my mum posed the question: “was it worth missing out on stray kids?” and the simple answer is no. absolutely not. although i’ve been a fan of harry for much longer, he will never make me feel the same security and happiness that stray kids do. through stray kids, i have met so many new friends both irl and on the internet and i’ve never been happier.

they’re not just some silly boy band, they’re a source of light. they have taught me so much about myself and have been there for me when i needed it the most. and the funny part is, they have no idea who i am. and i’m ok with that. i can’t wait for the day they come back to australia so i can show them my love and support.

i’m also immensely proud of how far they’ve come. they are the top 4th gen boy group, gained billions of streams, and are performing at lolipalooza. something bts didn’t quite do so early in their career.

and now for a personal thank you to the members.

thank you for your endless guardianship for both stays and your members. channie’s room is always the part of my week i look forward to, no matter what language you choose to speak in. you have sacrificed so much, and i’m so proud of the leader you are today. i really wish you could see yourself through our eyes.

LEE KNOW (MINHO)

thank you for your comfort. i always seem to find stability in your electric dance performances. you have worked so hard to get to where you are today. your quirks are what makes you unique, and i believe in your judgement. please never loose sight of who you are because we love you for it.

where do i even start? thank you for being strong (both physically, emotionally, and spiritually). you are what most aspiring rap sensations think they are. you are phenomenal at what you do. some people lose their sense of self when they undergo physical change, but you have never become as arrogant as them because of your grounded essence.

HWANG HYUNJIN

we all know you are the prettiest man on the planet. but what i want to thank you for is your artistic ability. there is not one single boy i know that loves to draw and sketch and read poetry more than you. i can get lost in your paintings and that says a lot about your talent. you and i also share the same personality type and zodiac sign so we are immediately the best :D

HAN JISUNG

your words are utopian. there are not many people in this world that can write a song and touch so many people in different languages. that, paired with your effortless comedic timing makes for the best friend we all dream of. thank you for bringing laughter to my darkest of days. you’re like a caffeine hit to the soul. there is a reason why we call you the fourth gen ace.

you are what everyone looks for in a soulmate. a literal beam of sunshine. it’s funny because it juxtaposes the beautiful deep rasp of your comforting voice. i am a little older than you were when you first moved to korea, and it makes me incredibly bewildered that you had the courage to leave your life behind and start afresh at such a young age.

KIM SEUNGMIN

the comedian you are. everyone always overlooks your contagious smile and your gorgeously angelic singing voice. i feel like i connect with you on a deeper, more spiritual level than most. i hope you realise just how loved you are. you may not be the member everyone notices, but you are certainly the member everyone grows to admire.

YANG JEONGIN

our baby bread. look at where you are now. barely 22 and living the life of your dreams. i wonder where all those bullies are now? certainly not as famous as you. your face is beautiful. you made me realise that self esteem is more important than what others say. you are the beauty to the beast. i can’t wait to see where your voice takes you.

Do I Get Asks: I told myself that I wouldn’t reblog asks unless I somehow got a decent amount of followers with curious enough people to ask stuff so, no. There’s a lot sitting in my drafts though so if you’re ever curious, *finger guns*.

Why Did I Choose My URL: Sigh, it’s an old username that I came up with when I first made my twitter in 8th grade, so I pretty much used it for everything. But I’m tired of it, and I changed my usernames on both my twitter and instagram so maybe one day I’ll finally change my tumblr one, too. I wanted to use my League IGN but it’s taken so :( 

Followers: Like how many I have? A decent amount, I’d say? I don’t know how  many of them are truly active, but I do see some people from time to time. I think they’re mostly my friends though. 

Average Hours of Sleep: OOF okay so during the school year, I was doing pretty well with sleeping relatively early and getting about 7-8 hours of sleep in. Now that it’s summer though... >_> 

Lucky number: 7 !! It was my lucky number in the board game Life and since my birthday is June 8th (mark your calendars), it’s cute because 7 is between 6/8 ^^; 

Instruments: I was honestly tempted to link Yoongi’s First Love here since I relate so much to it. I’ve played the piano since I was in 3rd grade? So about 14-15 years? I’m no Mozart or anything, but I enjoy playing it from time to time. In the more recent years, I’ve started kinda composing my own songs as well. I even bought a little music book to write down notes instead of just recording them in my phone ^^; But yeah, I love the piano and honestly, the lyrics of First Love really capture my experience with piano. 

What Am I Wearing: A nightgown and a light robe since it was freezing when I woke up from my nap before dinner. Nightgowns are the best, guys, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

AND I NEVER FINISHED IT. I have no idea why, either. aldsfkjalsd so yeah, I’d like to re-read those again someday~

So I saw this post saying that BTS was planning on disbanding during the N.O. era because of not having enough money and I can’t help but think of what it would be like if they actually had. There would no more of the songs we all love since that era. No music videos, no theories. No first place wins on music shows. No Daesang awards for best album of the year and artist of the year. No Billboard Music Award. No social media posts from the boys. No bangtan bombs. No world tours. And above else, there wouldn’t be an ARMY family that we all love and are happy to be apart of.

So a big thank you to the boys for sticking through with it despite the obstacles thrown at them. People say they’re cliche and are just an overrated boy group. No, they’re not. They’ve worked incredibly hard for where they are today and have given thousands, millions, of people hope to do the same.

Happy 4th anniversary BTS! Thank you for growing up to be the group that all of us admire and love so much. Thank you for all you have given us. We can only hope for many more years in the future.

Smeraldo: What we know so far lol

THE STORY OF SMERALDO

There's a story called, 'La Città di smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy in the 1500s-1600s. The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone. Because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up, he never opened his heart to anyone. Whenever they tried to approach him, he hid in anger. His happiness was to plant flowers in his garden. 

One day a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and stole a flower. this angered the man at first, so he watched his garden all night. But when he fell a sleep, the woman took another flower. This continued for several nights.

   The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman steal a flower. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her without realizing he kept waiting for her to come and the next day seemed a little brighter.

Following after her one day he realized that she was selling the flowers that she stole from him to make a living. The man desperately wanted to help the woman,  but he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks. He knew she would not love his 'grotesque' appearance.

   He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to let her continue stealing flowers from his garden.   The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist on the planet, so that the woman could sell them at an expensive price.  

He began to make the flower in his castle. After many unsuccessful attempts, the man made a flower that didn't exist and filled his garden,but the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited, she never came to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had died.

BigHit representatives revealed that bts' next comeback's theme will be about loving yourself. In the story the man did not love himself.   If he had loved himself he could have showed his face to the woman, and helped her before she had passed away.

 Jin tweeted a selca today, holding the Smeraldo flowers. These flowers were, according to a screenshot, discovered on june 12, 2013; the day of BTS’s debut showcase stage.  The screenshot:

On Instagram, there is an account called flowersmeraldo (https://www.instagram.com/flowersmeraldo/)

It has posted a picture, that says in korean: “The true feelings that could not be expressed” The handwriting looks oddly like Jin’s writing, check for yourself:

This account is believed to be owned by BTS, posting hints.

With the (fake) discovery of this smeraldo flower, the florist "Testesso" is gonna "open" a flower shop mid-september, I smell a comeback. (Check their captions and bio for more info since my Korean is very very poor!) 

The name of the blog is “te stesso”. If you translate the Italian phrase: “Ama te stesso” into English, you get “love yourself.” Haven’t we heard this before, guys? 

In every post, there’s a link to a certain website: www.flowersmeraldo.com This website leads you to a Korean Naver blog, which is also (obviously) believed to be owned by BTS.

The name of the blog is “te stesso”. If you translate the Italian phrase: “Ama te stesso” into English, you get “love yourself.” Haven’t we heard this before, guys?  Also,the meaning of the Smeraldo flower is "non potevo dire la verità,” which means "i couldn't tell the truth" or "the truth i couldn't tell.” They also have that phrase repeated on both the IG page and the blog itself.

Apparently Hobi once posted the source of the blog, and

The blog posted an event asking people to submit stories with confessions to family or anyone and 7 people's stories will be relayed. The winner’s will receive a special gift (Apparently a bouquet and a card or something? I’m not sure and also tired)

The stories have to be emailed and submitted before august 15th, 10pm kst. The last Bon Voyage episode also happens to be on this day. Maybe it’s a special date? :)

There are 7 episodes on the blog explaining the history of Smeraldo and the 5th mentions a "William Ashbless" who is a fictional character, and a poet. The fictional William Ashbless from Italy created playing cards and the blog mentions "The flower card", influenced by Smeraldo flowers.  

The Smeraldo flowers were supposedly discovered in "La Città di smeraldo" = "The emerald city", commonly known from Wizard of Oz.

Lastly, this blog was created july 4, 2017, on the same day the BTS logo video was released.

Well, The Smeraldo Acadamey, TSA for short, is a fictional academy. The academy was originally founded on sept. 12th 2013, on Rap Monster’s birthday. The first attendee was ���Inbloom BTS’ Screenshot:

 As you can see in the screenshot, their fourth anniversary is this year. So is BTS’s. Coincidence? I think not.

The Wings Chronicles – A BTS Exhibit For A Cause

Last September 2, I attended The Wings Chronicles exhibit here in Manila, which featured fan arts and photographs of the popular group Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단) also known as BTS . The two-day non-profit event was attended by numerous Filipino fans and was organized by Army Box.

I spoke to Rosie, head of Army Box, to get to know more about the Wings Chronicles Exhibit and the team behind it. “Army Box is a fan artists community with the goal of providing artistic BTS-related products in terms of goods and services by collaborating with different fansites, fanbases and organizations that will help uplift the image of BTS. It was officially established last year August 19, 2016. The team consists of 30 members from Philippines and USA.”

The Wings Chronicles Exhibit made its first stop in the Philippines, holding it in both Cebu and Manila, followed by Bangkok and Singapore. Just like BTS, The Wings Chronicles is also ‘touring’ different countries. So better check out the list of places they will go to at the end of this article to see if they are making a stop in your city.

It was definitely fun to be in a room full of Armys (fanclub name of BTS), all full of admiration and appreciation for the group. What makes the Wings Chronicles exhibit different from other BTS exhibits I’ve seen is that they are doing the event for a cause, as the proceeds will be donated under the name of BTS to humanitarian charities such as War Child USA Organization, St. Jude Children's Research and UNICEF. This is what drew me to the event all the more. In the Manila stop, there was also a photobooth set-up that fans availed of to commemorate the day with their friends. The accumulated cash from that section was said to have been donated to the children of Marawi, a place in Mindanao Island in the Philippines that is currently in the midst of a heated war between the local troops and armed Maute-ISIS group. Over the years I’ve seen donations using the names of the groups they idolize being common, especially fans of Korean artists, and I’m glad that besides supporting our favorite singers…we’re also making a difference.

Rosie explained that the Wings Chronicles concept actually started on a whim. “The admins (of Army Box) were planning about doing a whole year project in relation and likeness of how BTS has given everyone opportunities. We decided to pursue Global Embarkation, a two part project that focuses on extending help to our fellow Armys and mankind. The first part of this series was entitled, “Army Meets What”, which was held from January to June in celebration of BTS 4th Year Anniversary. For the second part, we are now going on a journey for a worldwide exhibit in collaboration with different fansites and fanbases carrying the title, “Wings Chronicles: The Exhibit”.

The team decided to hold the Wings Chronicles exhibit in places where Wings Tour happened. We wanted to share, relive and reminisce the experience of attending the concert with fellow Armys who were not able to do so and of course to meet Armys in different parts of the world. The exhibit will be held in different countries mainly, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, United States of America, Canada, Malaysia, Hongkong and South Korea.

It takes about 2-3months to organize each stop…from venues, set up & layout and other details. The team for each exhibit also vary by country. It usually ranges from 5 and above. There is about 25 fan artists consisting of Army Box members that produced fine artworks for the exhibit.”

Fellow ‘fangirls’ who I talked to after the Wings Chronicles exhibit stated that they highly recommend going to these kinds of events. “It’s like attending a concert” One excitedly said. While another thought that being surrounded with fellow fans helped her have fun and gain new friends. I noticed that a lot of the girls who met up on the day were just friends via the internet before, the event gave them a chance to personally meet each other to put a face behind their usernames…or what is called ‘meeting mutuals’ in today’s terms.

There were numerous photos and fan arts that the fans in the event’s place gush over. If you know the ‘heart eyes’ emoji on your phone, that’s the expression all of the attendees had. Background music of BTS was played all throughout which made fans ecstatic, we sang along and even did the fan chants all together.  Honestly I am very envious of people who can draw because I simply can’t, so I really admire the fan arts. Instead of the usual paintings that we grew up seeing in our homes, I imagine KPOP fans having these fanarts and framed photos of their idols as part of the interior design.

I was also able to interview one of the fan artists that participated in the exhibit, Giulia, who creates art featuring BTS as a hobby.  

“Getting to participate in events such as exhibits like the Wings Chronicles is an opportunity to me. It's an opportunity for me to share my art and interact with people. It is also an opportunity for me to learn. I learn to improve myself as an artist, getting to know what people like or what they appreciate. Also, picking up details here and there.

I only started my art account (@tiramijuu) last January 2017, but I already have been doing fanarts around June last year. Instagram was my first source for any BTS updates when I got into the fandom, and I'd always see fanarts posted by accounts I followed. I got inspired by them. I decided, why not give it a try? I had a talent for drawing and this could become a way for me to improve my craft. So, I started posting them on my personal account, then later on opened an art account. I draw because I want to, because I like it. I enjoy what I'm doing, and that for me, is very important.”

For Giulia, she still feels overwhelmed whenever people post pictures of merchandise featuring her artwork. “Their reactions and feedback are rooms for improvement. This is also a main reason why I like participating in these events, it's because I get joy from people seeing my art. Simple compliments of 'It's very cute' or 'I really like it' already makes me smile from ear to ear. Overall, I greatly appreciate it and am really glad.”

A lot of people have noted that the KPOP market has been oversaturated, with more and more Korean groups and singers debuting almost every month. So I was curious what made BTS stand out for Giulia and turn her into a fan. “Their playful nature attracted me. However, their music, pulled me right in and sealed the deal. I really love the music they produce, it speaks to the heart. And the fact that they talk about unusual topics made me stay. And also, the creative cinematography and storyline of their music videos had me sold.”

As BTS somewhat brought out Giulia’s creative side more, I too can relate. As shy as I am, I never thought I’d put myself out there by creating content on Youtube, stepping out of my comfort zone and to share my feelings all spurred by my love for Korean pop culture. I can say that BTS became an influence for me to lessen my self-doubt and just take the jump.

BTS - Born To Save ARMYs

Since the 4th year anniversary of BTS is approaching, I wanted to do a write up on how BTS has positively influenced millions of people around the world and most importantly mine.I have been an ARMY for over an year almost now and I can’t imagine how I would have hurdled the difficulties without BTS. I knew many ARMYs would think likewise.I am staying thousands of miles away from my family and friends, and this world isn’t easy for introverts. Being a hyper introvert, I found it difficult to get on with the daily aspects of my life. what may seem as a  regular chores to others felt like a worst nightmare to me. However, my only salvation was BTS, Precisely, their music made me feel that it’s okay to be who you really are, The thing which makes BTS really stand out is their bold approaches to address social stigmas and speak out the unspeakable issues. Pretty much every music you listen is all about love, relationships and heartbreaks or ideas pertaining to what can lead you to joyous carefree life. But you and I know that life is beyond those fanatic illusions. It is about suffering, fighting yourself and the world. The agony is never ending. All we need is a streak of light to be shone on us to make us believe in ourselves and to keep moving forward. BTS did that. They made me believe in me and to fight for myself. I can never be grateful enough for the impact that they had on my life and for giving me the WINGS to fly beyond this horizon. Thank you so much lads:)

From their debut song which boldly criticize the prejudices and social oppression on young fragile minds to winning Billboards award a week back, they deserve every dime of it.

I am including some of the iconic wins of BTS which have had an impact on their career and also on us, ARMYs.

Started as rebels who settles for nothing but success,

Happy tears moment,

The era which was flooded with sophisticated fan theories and ARMYs lost their peace of mind in figuring out what’s been BTS upto!
