1, Jack/bt
#1 a kiss good morning
He stirred with the first rays of dawn, the strange sounds of alien birdsong, or something like it, rousing him from a slumber far more restful than what most soldiers like him would enjoy. He stretched, toes curling in his boots, spine arching, fingertips splayed and trembling, and rolled, looking up into the deep violet sky, just beginning to blush pink, and took a deep breath.
Around him, the enormous robotic hands that cradled him twitched, quivering as the Titan that held him registered his awakening, and Jack Cooper turned his head and smiled. Some men might sleep fitfully under the open sky, but he knew he was well guarded. Some men might be troubled to be held nearly 20 feet aloft while they slept, but he knew he would never be dropped. He slept best in BT-7274's hands.
"Hey buddy," he murmured, sitting up slowly. BT blinked sedately at him, the lens of his singular optic rotating as he brought Jack up and in even closer, cradling him gently against the warmth of his chassis.
"Good morning, Jack," BT rumbled, squinting sweetly in his warmest version of a smile. Jack leaned up and pressed against the Titan's bulk, laying his cheek on warm metal, and smiled back into that big eye as BT tracked him.
"Good morning yourself. Ready for another day of hiking?" He asked, sighing happily as BT's hands shifted to hold him one-handed so that the other could stroke a single table-sized fingertip down his back carefully.
"Of course, Pilot," BT hummed, giving him another slow blink. "The sooner we complete this mission, the sooner we can get home."
Jack laughed and bent to lay a kiss on the rim of BT's focusing ring.
"Miss your frame?" He asked.
"I do prefer more...accessible accommodations," BT chuckled, managing to give Jack a bump in return before he pulled away. "This chassis is inconvenient." Jack laughed again and nodded, sitting back in BT's palm and folding his legs up. "Agreed. The sooner the better. I like you better at eye-level too, bud." "Makes kisses easier," BT said, setting off at a loping stride.
"And other things." "Yes, other things as well."

BT-7274: "Pilot cooper, I have been turned into a heavily stylized and simplistic drawing of myself, I must recommend evasive maneuvers so that you will not experience the same fate, or worse."
"I wouldn't mind that I think"
^
V
"what do you mean 'worse'?"
Jack Cooper: "what do you mean 'worse'?"
BT-7274: "marketable plushie"

SPOILERS!!!!
I'm reading this in class and I almost started sobbing. I had this spoiled for me by @kugisakimelon already but goodness me this still hurt to read. If I hadn't been spoiled I'd probably be straight up crying in front of like 20 people. I would be ugly crying harder than when I saw BT7274 die. This man won. He did win and you can't tell me otherwise.

it may be a bit angsty of an idea, but in that moment before his death when Lastimosa links BT7274 to Jack, his last saying "Take care of him", I like thinking that both BT and Cooper took it as if Lastimosa talked to them in that moment, about the other. it'd be interesting if it'd come up between them at any point. Jack: okay, but he was talking to me?? BT7274: negative. it's the titan who should take care of the pilot. it's in the derictives Jack: Jack: --listEN HERE, U DUMMY--
you have perfect timing cause I was just talking about Jack coming up with Protocol 4: protect the Titan
update: all further Titanfall stuff is going to be on my new Titanfall sideblog! best-titan-7274
“You know,” Jack says, “you really should be more careful.”
“Request clarification.”
“Well, there’s gotta be a limited number of Titan parts around. Only so many times you can be repaired.”
“Correct. There will someday come a point when Titans’ physical forms can no longer be repaired. However, with the current availability of raw materials, machinery, and skilled workers, I estimate that appropriate repairs for Titans will be available for another 174 years, without factoring in future availability of new materials and workers.”
Jack really should have seen that coming. BT can be a little too literal at times, and even with how long they’ve been together now, Jack can still be wrong about how to be clear with him.
“I meant that I don’t want to see you get damaged. I don’t–” Jack looks down at his hands, at the grease-streaked rag twisting between them, over and over. “I don’t want to lose you again.”
“It is unlikely that I will be heavily damaged in combat again. Adequate repairs will be provided. The deployment of another SERE kit should not be required.”
“It shouldn’t have been required the first time,” Jack mutters. He tosses the rag onto the rolling tool cart next to him and paces away. He’s never been great at emotional talks, he knows – but it’s different when he saw BT die. When he was never supposed to see his Titan ever again.
“I sense that you are in emotional distress.”
No shit. But BT gets quiet when Jack snaps at him. It’s stupid to compare a huge war machine to a kicked puppy, but it’s the thought that keeps coming to Jack’s mind, whenever they argue about something.
Besides, he never did like arguing with his friends.
“I’ll be fine, BT. Don’t worry about me.”
“Pilot Lastimosa told me to take care of you. Protocol 3 is extremely important.”
“Wait, what?” Jack turns, confused now. “He told me to take care of you. To make sure that you were okay. After two and a half years together, you meant the world to him.”
“Negative. I cannot dispute Pilot Lastimosa’s affection for me, but it is the Titan who is required to protect the Pilot. It would be ineffective to fully place the Titan’s safety in the Pilot’s hands.”
“Gee, thanks.”
“You are welcome.”
Ah, right. That literal mind again. Usually Jack just finds it funny, but at times like this, it can be a little frustrating. BT doesn’t always understand the way his words can be interpreted. Jack’s not sure if he even tries.
Does it really matter, either way?
“Look, I just want to keep you safe,” Jack says. “I know you’re a Titan, and there’s not a lot that can cross you, but you pretty much died. Twice. Humans get kind of upset by things like that.”
“Humans are often illogical about the destruction of non-organic objects.”
“Yeah, but you’re as much a person as I am. Maybe not literally, but when it counts, you and me, we’re a lot alike.”
“Incorrect. There are a significant amount of large differences between us.”
“I’m trying to protect you, dumbass! Protocol 4 is a thing!”
BT crouches down for a better look at him, and Jack tilts his head to keep eye contact. Kind of. Staring at that glowing blue dot is the closest thing.
“I am unfamiliar with any further protocols beyond the three assigned to me.”
“Protocol 4,” Jack repeats. “Protect the Titan. Everything you do for me, I do for you. Deal?”
For a second, he’s not sure what BT thinks of him, or the new protocol, or anything – and then BT gives him a thumbs up, and he knows everything’s right in their world.

@manic-pixie-dick-girl replied to your post “How would you prefer I refer to the mechs as well...”:
Thinking on this a bit more. I think there's something sort of... Alienating, maybe... About reading numerals in fiction. It feels a bit artificial to me. Not sure if that's an everyone thing or a me thing. But that may very well be the vibe you want given that it's a hybrid human-machine consciousness you're talking about! In which case I'd use the full model + number.
So this gave me a lot to think about - or maybe its just the fever making me think very slowly -.-'
Like cause yeah we are dealing with machine-human hybrids here, but in an, IMO unconventional way based heavily off having to read "the cyborg manifesto" and watch "all watched over by machines of loving grace".
All the mechs in Tungsten Rose have AIs built into them, but they're not BT7274 or Cortana, they're like... cmd+space on a mac. They can't talk, they're not actually conscious, but they're able to take cognitive load off the pilot e.g. by switching command protocol for their drones based off circumstances, or fixing a typo they keep making while texting.
The human-machine hybrid I'm thinking off, is more along the lines of like, someone driving their car, or controlling a character in a video game. Like when you're turning left in a car, you think "i'm going to turn left", not "i'm going to turn my car to the left".
I loathe the term "realism" in regards to scifi/fantasy, but that is sorta what I'm going for here. The pilot's perception isn't elevated by plugging their brain into a super computer, its elevated by the fact that they're constantly getting readouts for 17 billion different sensors.
Humans are notoriously bad at telling distances by eye, so one of the more subtle ways I try to show this effect is by the fact that when inside their mechs, pilots always know how far away something is: because they have laser range finders, and its not any more of a conscious act for them to use it, than it is for me to mount up after combat in wow.
All that to say, a big theme in Tungsten Rose is: if you spend enough time preparing for war, you'll eventually start one. And the knights are very much the embodiment of this concept.
Mar and Kista have both been piloting mechs since they were 4 years old. They have undergone rigorous training and a lot of highly invasive surgery, because they grew up being told that one day the fascists will return and try to destroy their home and culture.
And because of this. Because they spent so much of their lives interacting with the world through the filter of a warmachine, and because they can't touch their own face without feeling subdermal armor, everything becomes an act of war.
They aren't able to take a step back, and realize they're essentially dragging the world into a war over who gets to take the pretty girl to the ball. It becomes filtered through the war machine. "It's not about my emotions, I'm protecting the princess, I'm protecting my people, I'm fighting against evil."
All this is to say, i kinda like just using numbers now, even though thats by far the least popular in the poll, specifically because it's so dehumanizing.
