many,, thoughts about max trying to take control of what she sees as the inevitable (anne leaving her, anne choosing jack over her) and anne’s repeated refusal to accept it as inevitable + how much she wants max to stay

I'm starting a Black Sails rewatch.
Finally. After two years. I didn't have the strenght to do it earlier. I thought... If I rewatch it now, then it means it's really over.
But I miss it so much.
It's time.
And I've got a wonderful crew to watch it with, so... let's get started!
I'll try to make some edits, if I'm not too busy.

BLACK SAILS REWATCH: EPISODE II
Odysseus, on his journey home to Ithaca, was visited by a ghost. The ghost tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order, he must do one last thing before he can rest. The ghost tells him to pick up an oar and walk inland, and keep walking until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel. For that would be the place that no man had ever been troubled by the sea, and that’s where he’d find peace. In the end that’s all I want. To walk away from the sea and find some peace.

Black Sails Rewatch: S01E04&5
Tumblr media
(in which i put down my thoughts about Black Sails for no apparent reason. Like study notes)
Episode 4
- Silver looks smug/proud/amused at Bones' neat speech about forgoing the fuck-tent. Too bad Bones didn't get his way.
- Morley basically outlines how Flint gets people to go along with his plans, a skill we see throughout the series having its effect on his crew, Eleanor, Bones, etc.
- So Vane's hallucination of the bearded giant was an effect of opium
- What's that long piece of fabric worn around the neck, inside the shirt collar and tied like a tie?
- This episode is most significant for The Billy Bones Gun Show.
- Halfway through and we're back to Rackham is trying to wriggle his way out of their tight spot. Anne isn't keen on continuing to stick with Vane and received offers to join other crews, but Rackham isn't a hot commodity. Either the writers are going with the assumption that other crews are okay with having women on board or Anne's reputation is ferocious enough for them to overlook such prejudice.
- I can't believe Anne's actress is real life nobility. Her demeanor, her speech, it's madness.
- Scott's face almost breaks my heart here, when he sees the armed men outside the room. It's like he can's believe sweet innocent Eleanor would do that.
- Sometimes the scenes between Flint and Eleanor seem strangely intimate. Lots of unwavering gazes and over the shoulder camera angles.
- Parallels between Flint cutting Randall's leg and Bones cutting the rope.
- The Eleanor Hallucination: "And you destroyed me" - this fact makes Vane sob. Is this about the embargo or something *else* in their past?
- Charles motherfucking Vane takes out 3 men while on his knees.
- A mostly fillery episode.
Episode 5
- Unscrupulous yet beautiful display of leadership from Flint in the opening scene. It encapsulates his arrogance, intelligence and experience neatly.
- Damn I love all scenes at the brothel in daylight.
- Black Sails is educational and entertaining: We get to see how the speed of a ship is roughly measured.
- The Guthries’ relationship is interesting. Her father is willing to throw her under the bus just to stop her plans.
- Bones puts the leadership skills he learned from Flint in practice when convincing Dufresne to fight and conquer his fear, to speak with such conviction to drive away his uncertainties. #charactergrowth
- Random nonspeaking Asian guy appearance count = 2
- Dufresne is used brilliantly in this episode as the audience's eyes on the pirates tactics and to demonstrate the harsher realities of the pirates life. The muted sound is also brilliant and much more effective than a full on boom pow bang orchestra. Like someone deafened by cannon fire.
- Eleanor - she's more of a visionary but unfortunately not much of a politician, not like Flint.
- Awww snap Scott has been taken by Bryson.
- Rackham actually calls Vane "Chaz"?!

okay i am aware that my url already gives my allegiances away but vane is such a good character in the show and i cannot wait to rewatch all of his s3 arc
in the first 3 eps there’s already so much !! defending jack, repeatedly, to other people! the way that his agreeing to leave with Teach is framed as a sacrifice made for jack as it’s the only way to achieve jack’s plan of defending the beach

wait i have more thoughts about vane actually
when we meet him in s3, he’s the most cooperative he’s ever been! he and flint are working together; as part of the partnership vane has ceded that flint is a better naval commander than he is (as vane’s in charge of the nassau ground militia). we learn that the only reason the partnership was able to happen was because vane defended jack to flint and stood between them. vane’s intro in s3 is being furious that jack tricked him into going after slave labour to rebuild the fort. eleanor being gone is doing wonders for his temperament, huh
anyway so there’s all of that, and then Teach shows up and immediately indicates exactly why Vane is the way he is; the sort of aggressive, uncompromising hypermasculine figure that Vane was in s1 - and vane promptly defends jack and his investment in nassau, does not seek Teach’s approval, does not revert to who he was previously
