Feminist Recommendation: The Babysitters Club
When a group of girls decide to start a babysitting business together in their home town of Stoneybrook, they find comfort, support and friendship in each other as they make it through middle school. Kristy Thomas is a headstrong 'tomboy' and a natural born leader. Mary Anne Spier is a shy girl with a love of musical theater and has an overbearing, protective father watching over her. Claudia Kishi is a creative fashionista who flunks out in the maths department of her schooling. Stacey McGill is the chic new girl from New York with a secret, and Dawn Schafer is a determined activist and loyal friend. With their creation of 'The Baby-Sitters Club' we see the five girls grow, as we follow individual stories of their babysitting ventures.

hello all
basically, i'm going to be watching bsc episodes and listing down the autistic traits i see in kristy. i may have a bonus part for the other girls but i'm mainly going to be focusing on kristy as she is my favourite.
without further ado, let's do this
Episode 1
right off the bat we get the line "I was doing the most talking, as per usual." autistic people have a tendency to dominate conversations or to "monologue"
also, mary anne is kristy's only friend at the very beginning. most autistic people find it challenging to make any new friends, both due to any communicative issues and because they don't want to change up their routine. kristy is clearly just fine with having only mary anne as a friend, which is shown in later episodes
"it was boiling in there, like surface of venus levels hot and he just kept droning on and on" autistic people are wayyy more prone to sensory issues than most other people, and that can include temperature, especially if they start sweating, which for many people causes sensory distress. autistic people also find it hard to concentrate for a myriad of possible reasons, including filtering out information our brains deem 'irrelevant' even if they're not
"If he was such a genius, why didn't he say all people?" autistic people tend to have a strong sense of justice and a black and white view of things, having very clear ideas of what is right and wrong in their head. yes, kristy's a feminist, but her willingness to correct him without a care for manners reads as autistic to me
"except apparently, i raised my voice, and didn't raise my hand." manners, even well remembered ones like raising your hand, can sometimes be forgotten by autistic people if it's something they're passionate about: in this case, kristy's need for correction and fairness overrode that
"[the boys in the back are] wiping sweat on each other, but somehow, i'm the disruptive one" autism in AFABs is often seen as being rude or disruptive despite them often just being passionate about the subject. also, sensory issues again?
"claudia and mary anne and i used to hang out all the time. but that was before claudia decided she was more into boys and clothes than us." another example of how kristy has had very few people in life she considers friends and has stuck with them for most of her life. also, possible rejection sensitive dysphoria made kristy see it as bigger than it actually is, because they seem to be fine when they interact, like nothing happened
in the next scene, we see kristy helping david michael with a puzzle. puzzles are often enjoyed by autistic people due to being structured, logical, visual and with a clear end, all of which are treasured aspects of things for autistic people.
stimming!!! lots of stimming. when explaining her new concept which she has clearly quickly hyperfixated on, we see her pacing and fidgeting with her hands as well as gesturing. also, having a strong moral code and wanting to put in effort for kids to be happy
she seems pretty startled when stacey appears, and is a little upset when it's obvious claudia has told her about the club idea: autistic people find it hard to find their footing after their expectations of how something would go are thrown off, but kristy's new hyperfixation overrules this change of plans
even though her need to infodump and talk about this new idea made her not lose her cool, she's visibly still unsure when stacey suggests things. even afterwards, she tries to... "villainize" feels to strong a word, but tries to make reasons for why she disliked her even though it's obvious she was just taken off guard
"maybe new people weren't an invading force to be repelled at all costs" here we get to see how much kristy detests change—even when it's beneficial, she'd rather stick with one or two friends. pay special attention to the wording: "at all costs". kristy will always try and evade change
another sign of her intolerance for change is how much she just dislikes watson, even though he seems like a nice guy. she doesn't want to accept that he is going to a fixture in their lives because it will mean that her family will change a lot, at least in her view (though i will say she has a lot of abandonment issues and trauma from her dad leaving her which shifts her perception on any guy her mom dates)
also from here on out i think we can see a clear hyperfixation on business and law, judging by her attitude and comments later on about the club
this whole dinner scene just feels very autistic to me: she takes what her mother says about "feeling okay about it" very literally and bulldozes any attempt of conversation. she is not okay about the idea of her mother marrying watson and she doesn't understand the social cue of her being more gentle about it. she genuinely doesn't understand why her mom would ask about it if she, in kristy's perspective, was not going to listen to her, when kristy is the one not listening to her over a misunderstanding.
this might be more of a me thing, but kristy trying to send her mom an email to apologize just feels really autistic to me, as it resonates hard with me and what i've done in the past. i used to leave messages in google translate for my parents to apologize. idk but its worth looking at
"i'm bossy, get used to it" shows that not only is she fairly controlling, but she's also aware of this fact. i couldn't find much research on this, but many autistic people are bossy or controlling so they know what to expect and so that things go exactly to plan.
kristy's lack of tact and sense with the phone. just. that.
claudia remarks that she's starting to remember why she stopped hanging out with kristy so much—because she's controlling and "bossy". this is partially due to feeling like everything that happened with her dad was out of her control and so it intensified the shittier he became, combined with that, autistic people can tend to come off as too much. also, rejection sensitive dysphoria—stares off into the distance and doesn't talk.
autistic people tend to be very trusting of others, taking lots of what they say at face value, and struggling to comprehend why someone would lie to them. despite only knowing stacey for a short amount of time and not even completely liking her, she's devastated when it turns out stacey was lying to them.
"this whole situation has spiralled out of my control, and that's a feeling i really, really hate." same points that have been made above—absolute control over what happens when they're involved is a big thing for autistics so they know completely what's going on. add on her trauma about her absent father, and it makes sense why she acts the way she does.
more about the trust!! she trusts stacey to not only know about her hyperfixation but also to be directly involved in it—that's a really big deal for us autistics!! it means we Trust you!!
more hammering in about kristy's control issues. i'm glad i've only seen One (1) fic demonizing her for it but at the same time that's one too many
kristy being just. so blunt. i love her. "you're controlling my THOUGHTS now?" "yes." a lot of autistic people don't see any reason to not be honest most of the time.
is just. dead serious about the "i should resign before i'm impeached".
more bluntness!! "when mary anne gets scared at something you think is silly, do you make fun of her and call her a baby?" "yeah, sometimes." "oh. but you're still her best friend, right?" "yes." but also, bluntness isn't always a bad thing. kristy just casually throws in the "i love you" because she thinks it at that moment and means it, so she sees no reason not to say it because it's true.
more finding it easier to say stuff like "thank you" over text than in person, just like the "i'm sorry" earlier
additional notes:
mary anne is autistic too!! we see her stimming, though, stroking the end of her braid during her convo abt the club with stacey, kristy and claudia. also her just letting kristy speak a lot feels autistic but idk how to explain it. also, she's good with visual organization, such as keeping things orderly in a google docs and writing minutes. i feel like she'd rather her do it than anyone else, that way she can help the club and make it easier for her to concentrate on the club itself. also, stacey and even claudia, her childhood best friend, both remark that she doesn't speak a lot. she definitely isn't nonverbal, but she absolutely lets people talk over hers and seems to find it more comfortable to not speak, at least early on. i could only find stuff for nonspeaking and nonverbal autistics, but i've had several periods where it wasn't uncomfortable to speak, but i was much more comfortable not speaking, which i think might be the case for mary anne, though it could be a mark of her simply not knowing what to add.
claudia CLEARLY has adhd!! she doodles and fidgets a lot, and many adhders turn out to be artists due to their creativity and excess energy that they expel via doodling. she draws on her shoes, and the teacher remarks that she "wouldn't want another failed quiz on your average", indicating her struggle with school, which we see even more of in the coming episodes, and people with adhd tend to have poor academic perfomance, mainly for their struggle with executive dysfunction skills.
claudia also spells "prety grate" instead of "pretty great" in her email to kristy. judging by this and later scenes in the series, it's possible she has dyslexia and/or dyscalculia, which has been reported to more or less have a 25% comorbidity with adhd
janine is also pretty obviously autistic-coded; her room is very dimly lit, she hardly ever leaves it, has flat affect, doesn't pick up much on claudia's social cues, has a special interest in computer and tech and whatnot, has a very extensive vocabulary, and butts in on conversations with her advice without asking before leaving after they get what she's saying
and that's it for episode 1 !!!! tell me what you think, and i'll see you all with part 2 very soon :)

ok bestie but have you ever accessorized with a safari helmet someplace other than a safari??? this is an important question
Assuming that your name actually is Stacey…were you active a very long time ago on LJ in Buffy and Stargate fic verses? There is something about your writing, both fic and when you talk about work, that is very familiar. And I can’t remember the LJ handle to ask “Hey, are you so-and-so?”
I wasn't, but it's wild to think I might have a fic doppelganger out there! My name is a tribute to Anastasia/Stacey "Boontsie" McGill, aka the bestest and blondest member of the Babysitter's Club. Fun fact about Stacey: she's from New York City, which she doesn't talk about much in the books, so a lot of people don't realize she is very cool and hip and urban. (Note: this is a joke, don't @ me.)
All that to say, I adore Buffy, but was never into Stargate. Still, this makes me want to watch it!
#the truth about stacey#is it weird that i'm reblogging this just to make a dumb inside baseball joke?#inside bsc-ball?#idc i'm doing it anyway

Books (again) and other things
10.22.24 ~ Tuesday
Welcome back to the Book Nook! First things first: HAPPY ASEXUAL AWARENESS WEEK! I want to do something special for every day of Ace week (I have yet to decide what) and today it's going to be a drawing of a frog with an Ace flag that I found on Pinterest. Maybe that's what will happen every day, I guess you'll have to tune to find out this week. ;) I'm also aware that Asexuality Awareness week started two days ago, on the twentieth and it is in fact, October 22nd. Tuesdays usually feel like the "actual" start of the week to me since it's the first day of work for me. So...it makes sense to me.
I will also be going on a trip to Arizona on Thursday, so you best believe Imma be rocking some Ace and Aro pride while I'm there. ;) I wanted to try to wear something Ace or AroAce every day but I might've forgotten today. BUT I have made AroAce bracelets to sell in the shop I work at, so we got one of those on. Plus, I got my nails done recently and they've got purple ombre, so I think that counts as well.
Something I did for Aromantic Awareness week is make a bunch of Aro colored bracelets and had them out for free, so I want to do that again for Ace week! But I am low on those bracelets, so I'm gonna be a bracelet making machine when I get home today. Besides, better late than never. ;)
One of the main things I wanted today's blog post to be about is a book series that I really love. The Baby-Sitters Club (the graphic novels) books based on the original BSC books by Ann M. Martin. The illustrators/authors have changed as more books have come out but I love looking at all the different art and writing styles.
This is probably the main book series that I will always get new releases for, no matter how old I get, no matter what age the books are for. (Quick side note on that topic: it literally does not matter how old the books you read are intended for and it does not matter how old you are. Heck, I'm twenty and I regularly read middle grade books. Because I like them. And that's all that matters. I'm someone who has had a bit of trouble with not feeling embarrassed with reading some of the books I read but I shouldn't feel embarrassed! No one should. READ WHAT YOU WANT TO READ, WHO CARES WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK.) Okay. Side note over.
I never really got into the original Baby-Sitters Club books, though I've read a few of them. I love the graphic novels a lot, I feel like the art adds so much more to the story. So far, there's 16 of the graphic novel adaptations out. (And yes, I have all of them, hehe.) I know they've skipped some of the original books, probably because they felt they didn't add enough to the Baby-Sitters Club universe. (Or not, I don't know.) But the ones they have made, I love. And of course, we're going to talk about my favorites.
These are three of my favorites out of the BSC! I'm sure if I re-read all of them, I'd include a few others, but we'll talk about these for now.
Good-bye Stacey, Good-bye is book number 11 in the series. Lemme just preface by saying, Stacey is probably my favorite BSC character's point of view to read from. She and Claudia are probably my favorite BSC members, honestly.
I love this one because it's Stacey moving back to New York City and while her leaving Stoneybrook is sad, the way she looks at moving back, I really like. Also, I've always wanted to go to New York City and explore, so I'm gonna love any of the books that have to do with it. As well with Stacey and Claudia's friendship, I love it so much. In this one it's shown quite a bit, their dedication and care for each other. The art style in this is one of my favorites. It was a bit of a change to get used to when Raina Telgemeier stopped illustrating them (I love her own books as well), but I think I kind of prefer this style more. I love them all, but this one just scratches my brain right.
Jessi's Secret Language, book 12. As a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults), I really, really love when authors include deaf representation. There needs to be more representation, but over the last few years I've really noticed deaf characters being more included in books. As well as deaf representation, I'd love to see more normalized LGBTQIA+ representation. Seriously! But we're getting on a tangent now.
I love book 12 because of the things I've already stated, but also it's such a sweet book too. Jessi's love for dancing and how the kids and other BSC members show their support; I love it all.
And the last Baby-Sitters Club book we'll talk about today: Stacey's Mistake, book 14. Like I said about Good-bye Stacey, Good-bye, I love all the New York City vibes in this one too. But I'm also drawn to it because of the friend issues that happen. I haven't read this one in a bit, but I remember something in my brain going, "oh wow, I feel seen." I love books that make you feel like that. The way everything ends up okay-like every BSC book but that's partly why I love them so much-makes my heart smile.
I love all of the Baby-Sitters Club books and I will probably revisit talking about them in the future. They just give me this comfort and peak my interest every time I read them. And I'll also add: this is probably the only series that I've felt a real interest in writing fanfic and/or creating fanart for. But fanfic in the sense that I cast some of the characters as AroAce in my head. Honestly, it's kinda a lot of fun; I can see why people like creating an alternate story line to original stories in this way. :)
That is all for now, have the best day ever, and never stop reading what makes you happy.
All my love,
Thalia <3

Mary-Anne Spier x reader part 1
“Mary-Anne!” shouted Claudia from across the hall. Mary-Anne turns around quickly, seeing the BSC coming towards her as she places her books in her locker.
“Oh, hey guys!” Mary-Anne greets back, seeing as they were no placed in front of her.
“Did you hear?” Kristy says, as all the other girls are kind of gathered around excitedly.
“What?” Mary-Anne asks, starting to become curious as to what they’re excited for.
“Er, well……guess who’s gonna be coming over to help with the flyers!” Claudia exclaims.
“Who?” Mary-Anne asks confused.
“your crush, y/n!” Stacey says for Claudia.
Mary-Anne blushes, not expecting for that to be their answer. She had the biggest crush on y/n and would always be so distracted when she was around, which was very unusual for herself.
“wait, really!?” Mary-Anne exclaims excitedly.
“ya! I was able to make her agree, since she was a bit shy with not really knowing any of you guys.” Claudia explains as everyone nods.
Mary-Anne squeals excitedly as she and the rest of the BSC start to celebrate for Mary-Anne, wanting her to be happy.

TV SHOW REVIEW: The Babysitters Club
★★★★★ - 5 stars
“With all the things I can do, the only thing they care about is the one thing I can’t.”
Based on the novels by Ann M. Martin, The Babysitters Club follows a group of early-teenage girls as they learn about friendship, life, and babysitting.
At its core, the Babysitters Club depicts the importance of friendship and family - how relationships define us as people. It also shows the importance of identity. Each character displays different interests - such as art, theatre and politics - showing how discovering your own interests at a young age is extremely important to development. Furthermore, the show depicts young love, grief and important life experiences, such as first periods. It shows everything that makes up the life of a teenager, and how integral each and every experience we have is to who we are as individuals.
With a diverse cast, impeccable acting and well written storylines, The Babysitters Club is an iconic show that should be on everyone's watchlist.

#44 Dawn and the Big Sleepover: Chapter 7
The BSC are SO amazing, they can blow off school to speak to their adoring fans! And Mallory gets humiliated but what else is new.
Dawn's sitting in homeroom, while her teacher Mr. Blake (one of the 1,289 members of the Stoneybrook Middle School staff) takes attendance. She won't be there for long, because she has to go to SES and introduce her relief drive at an assembly! Because, you know, Ms. Besser or any of the other teachers can't do it. The whole freakin town is under the BSC's spell, because Ms. Besser got the SES principal to arrange the assembly and the BSC gets to blow off class for a bit so they can be there. And their teachers aren't making a stink about it! Wow, Kristy's mind control powers are really paying off.
And Dawn's nervous about speaking to a bunch of kids, the majority of which she knows well and babysits for. The ones who don't use the BSC, well Kristy will take care of that. Soon, all of Stoneybrook will be under her control! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh wait, yeah. Dawn's nervous about speaking in front of a group of kids. But I thought she was oh-so sure of herself because she's such a headstrong individual! I think Peter Lerangis got her personality mixed up with Mary Anne's.
Dawn's so lost in her thoughts, she doesn't realize Mr. Blake called her name, so Mary Anne nudges her and Ray Stuckey (Dawn says he's the class clown...what, was Alan Gray absent?) says, "Earth to Dawn! Earth to Dawn!" A real John Mulaney, that one. Mr. Blake goes back to taking the attendance until the principal, Mr. Taylor, interrupts with an announcement over the loudspeaker. He says that the Seven Chosen Ones will be dismissed at five minutes to ten. Ray Stuckey asks Dawn if he joins the BSC will he get to miss school too and then fades into BSC Obscurity, joining the Trip-Man and Sabrina Bouvier the Younger.
The time arrives, and the girls leave class to go, Mr. Blake wishing Dawn luck. And of course, that makes her task feel more important, making her more nervous and simultaneously inflating her ego to Kristy-size proportions. The school's secretary, Mrs. Downey, is volunteering to drive them to SES, so they climb into her station wagon. Mallory and Jessi end up in the back (not the backseat, the back), which is also metaphorical of how the BSC treats the junior officers in general. Sticking them in the trunk.
Also, going by the map of Stoneybrook in the Complete Guide, I'm pretty sure the elementary school and middle school are across the street from each other. If so, that's a pretty short car ride!
They get to SES, and Ms. Besser greets them, adding that Dawn looks like Jeff. They go inside, and Ms. Besser says she's sooo glad the BSC swooped in and came up with this wonderful, benevolent project. The BSC saves the day again! I still find it kind of weird that the school hadn't come up with a fundraiser, and they find the BSC to be geniuses for thinking it up instead. Dawn remarks that the elementary school cafeteria smells like boiled broccoli. Mine always smelled like paper towels and processed cheese pizza (Stacey wouldn't have been able to eat it).
The girls meet Ms. Reynolds, the SES principal, and Dawn describes her: She had red hair and a strong, kind face. I liked her right away. Geez, they always like the people they meet right away! If this was Mallory narrating, you know she would have thrown in that she wanted to be just like Ms. Reynolds when she grows up!
Ms. Reynolds tells Dawn this is a very smart idea - because why should the teachers organize a food/clothing drive, when the BSC can do all the work for them? Dawn is still crazy nervous and Mary Anne squeezes her hand for good luck.
The BSC walks onstage with the two teachers and sit down in some chairs arranged in a semicircle. Ms. Reynolds tells the kids that the girls are familiar to some of you. More like most of them; the BSC are like surrogate parents to the kids, considering how much the Stoneybrook parents dump them off on a babysitter! Dawn is brought up to the microphone to talk and while she mentally angsts about how crappy her voice sounds amplified, Haley Braddock happily calls out "Hi Dawn!" Kiss ass.
Dawn goes through the group to introduce them all, which is kind of pointless, considering the BSC spends all their free time with these kids, babysitting them and organizing carnivals/plays/festivals/pet shows/interpretive dance recitals/taffy pulls for them. Needless to say, the kids' response to each BSC member getting introduced is like Oprah showed up and announced she was doing her Favorite Things episode.
youtube
Dawn delves into explaining her project and midway through, she hears a kid yawn loudly in the audience and sees kids laughing as the perpetrator is pulled out of the auditorium by his teacher. Someone bored by a BSC project? BLASPHEMY!
She decides to wing it and look up from her notes, and that ends up working, because she's more convincing and passionate. By this point, she sees kids in the audience following her and nodding in agreement, so her confidence has been restored and she's happy they're interested. Well, it's that, or Kristy turned the mind control device on.
She gets to the part about there being a reward at the end, and the kids go nuts when they hear about the sleepover. Dawn asks if there's any questions, and Little Miss Butt Kisser Haley shoots her hand up right away and gushes about what a wonderful idea it is! Yes, keep feeding the egos. She also asks if they can tell their penpals about the project. Don't even think about it! It's going to be a surprise! Say one word, and the entire school gets a Look from Kristy. You got that?
A few more kids ask questions, including a girl named Valerie Namm, who Dawn describes as a friend of Charlotte's. A friend of Charlotte's who we've never heard from before and will probably never hear from again. That's what I call an incredibly peripheral character!
Then a kid named Rob Hines asks if he can blow off the "helping-people" crap and just go to the party, and his friends laugh. Wow, a kid acting like a kid! Dawn tells him no work, no play. And why mention this kid NOW? I think some foreshadowing just came into effect...
Finally, Jordan raises his hand and says "Hey, Mal, what's that thing crawling up the wall behind you?" Mallory spins around in horror, Jordan and his friends crack up, and Mallory gets humiliated in front of a large group of elementary school children. Just another day in Stoneybrook for Mallory!
With that, Ms. Besser steps in and says she'll answer any remaining questions (yeah, I'm shocked too). The BSC leaves the stage to more thunderous applause and cheering, and this boring chapter comes to a close.
