hypothetical witness to my madness: why are you fishing so late at night
me playing mysteries under lake ophelia, reeling in tuna like nobody's business: because i've lost control of my life

This is the reason I always advocate for finding cool things on your own. It will always be satisfying to me to see a game that looks interesting to me, get it on a whim, play it, and love it. This was exactly the case with Fatum Betula.
I was initially drawn to the game by its aesthetics, which are honestly masterfully done. An extremely simple yet effective PS1-esque aesthetic. I’m particularly fond of the way they render light rays. I was originally expecting to play something reminiscent of LSD Dream Emulator or Yume Nikki, and while those influences are undoubtedly present, the gameplay was a lot more involved than I expected. I was into it, it was quite fun.
Thematically, the game was a lot more explicit than I expected. In a good way! I think the developer Bryce Bucher put it best when they said they wanted to explore a lot of themes in the game. I think that definitely comes through, however to it doesn’t quite feel “sloppy” as it does dense. I think there are a ton of super cool interpretations you could make and the many different themes aren’t necessarily disconnected. For example, there’s something quite fascinating by having themes of immortality and an extremely unsubtle and seemingly random critique of the American Dream in the same work. I loved it by the way, the line that stuck out to me the most is “you are your bone structure” (for obvious reasons), I also think that criticism is more important now than ever (for other very obvious reasons). There is a lot to be gleaned from this work and I can feel it coming from a very raw and genuine perspective.
Lastly I quickly want to mention the music, very wonderful, the track for the autumn area was my favourite, it reminded me of a track from Ivan Zannotti’s IMSCARED which I’m also very fond of, I don’t know if that was the inspiration but if it was it’s a great choice.
I wholeheartedly recommend Fatum Betula to anyone who’s a fan of short and sweet atmospheric spooky puzzle games. I think you could get a lot out of a game like this, and I will be actively seeking out more like it.
