Cowboys former 2nd round pick's untimely injury puts his job at risk Injuries are part of the NFL game. They have been since Fran Tarkenton was running around in the 1960s and they will be when Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. is calling audibles at the line. A mark... #DallasCowboys

The NFL Draft is a Crapshoot for QBs
The NFL Draft is Crapshoot for QBs.
The NFL Draft is where teams look to plug holes on their rosters and attempt to find the player that will save a floundering franchise or continue the reign of a dynasty. Teams often make huge trades to attempt to find that player sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It happens most often when a quarterback needy team sees a guy they like and they trade up to draft him. But time and time…

With so much free time currently and a heavy anticipation for normalcy aka the 2020 NFL Draft, I felt like it might be fun to take trip down memory lane. As such I'm going from 2010 to 2019 and aiming to take a long look at what the story was going into each draft, what the Cowboys got out of each draft and what might have been different had they made a few changes. 2010 The “Go For It” Year The Cowboys entered the start of the next decade coming off their most successful playoff run with the pieces in place to make a run for it. They had a tremendously successful three running back system with bruiser Marion Barber, speedster Felix Jones and well rounded #3 back Tashard Choice, they had just seen the emergence of Bill Parcells project and third year WR Miles Austin to go along with the likes of Patrick Crayton, Roy Williams and TE Jason Witten to create a superb receiving array for Tony Romo. All of this combined with an OL that sure SEEMED pretty solid meant that the Cowboys offense would be good to go for years on end. Defensively they were in need of playmakers but were buoyed by the complex blitzing schemes of Wade Phillips and two of the NFL’s better OLBs in DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. This all went to hell very quickly but let’s start with the 2010 draft and what I would deem the “Go For It” year that ultimately backfired. The draft on paper seemed focus on two spots going into it; defensive line help and offensive line help. The Cowboys OL seemed to be riding on its last days of dominance with Tony Romo getting stomped out against Minnesota’s uber aggressive front seven. Marc Colombo, once a revolutionary find under Bill Parcells, was cracking and Flozell Adams was finally removed from his perch as the Cowboys long term LT. The Cowboys 2007 4th round pick Doug Free had finally emerged as a starting caliber tackle and would be swung into the left tackle spot in the upcoming season. On the interior, Leonard Davis and Kyle Kosier were good but also on the wrong side of 30 and Andre Gurode was breaking down as well. The Cowboys brought in a bevvy of 1st round caliber OL (Mike Iupati among them), DL (Jared Odrick and Tyson Alualu) and a corner or two who would later be called within the first fifty picks. A few weeks before the draft, those plugged in began to float stories of Dez Bryant. If the internet back then was an ocean of misinformation then we were being given more and more buoys to guide us to shore. The Cowboys attended his pro day, they worked him out privately and brought him into Valley Ranch. They spoke with Deion Sanders about him. They were at the very least smitten and at most willing to risk it all on a wide receiver who represented so much uncertainty but also so much tantalizing talent. As it turns out, Jerry Jones will always remain Jerry Jones. The Cowboys spent their 1st round pick in a pretty Jerry Jones-ian fashion, swooping in an aggressive move up to snag a falling star. Dez Bryant’s offseason began technically in the middle of his junior season when he was suspended for lying to the NCAA over his somewhat questionable quasi illegal (by college football standards) relationship with Deion Sanders. In the offseason he was plagued by questions about his weight, commitment and speed. He had a pro day where he had to go back and get a different pair of cleats, stalling the entire workout and then disappointing with his speed. What the Cowboys saw though was what Dez proved to be in the NFL; a tremendous talent on the field who was built to play the X position in Jason Garrett’s offense. Realizing that they had a chance to make a move, the Cowboys moved UP ahead of the Baltimore Ravens to grab what they felt was the one missing piece to their offense. The Cowboys were willing to gamble on Dez Bryant’s upside in hopes that they could nurture and help develop him. They were going for it---and they took a chance on a guy they figured would bring out the most in Tony Romo. Then in the second round, the Cowboys AGAIN rolled the dice. They made a move up for Sean Lee, an oft injured star linebacker out of Penn State who had the ability to be a long term replacement to the likes of Keith Brooking and Bradie James. They were going for it; giving up assets to get stars. History has shown that the Cowboys were 100% right to make those moves. No matter how rocky the Dez relationship was and how sour the ending may bem, the Cowboys got All Pro level production out of him and he was in many ways their spirit through the trying Garrett years and the end of the Romo Era. Sean Lee has battled injuries his whole pro career but remains in Dallas to this day, no longer the ace of their defense but as a savvy vet who spot starts. The rest of the picks were a mixed bag and by mixed bag I mean an absolute disaster. My theory on drafting is that the proper way to grade day three is to take the number of picks you have and then break down the number of contributors you get from those picks. If you took the standard four players then at least half of those should be contributors. If you get six of those then you should be able to turn three of those into contributors. The more lottery tickets you have, the more likely you are to find SOMETHING of note. That wasn't the case here. 4th round pick Akwasi Awusu-Ansah was a complete bust; a corner/safety/special teams ace who couldn’t play any of those spots. 6th round pick Jamar Wall flopped in Dallas and bounced around the league in relative anonymity. The Cowboys did get a good player in 6th round OT Sam Young---but Young’s contributions as a swing tackle and spot starter were utilized elsewhere as he didn’t make the team. 7th round pick Sean Lissemore was eventually flipped a year later for a 6th round pick when the Cowboys went to a 4-3 defense. The Wade Phillips head coaching era came to a swift and unforgiving end after a 1-7 run that saw Tony Romo hurt against the rival New York Giants and his team quit on him at every opportunity thereafter. The end of Wade led to the rise of Jason Garrett and we all know how that script played out for the next nine years. Best Pick: Dez Bryant in the 1str round Biggest Miss: Awkwasi Awusu-Ansah in the 4th round Biggest Proximity Whiff: The Cowboys took Awkwasi Awusu-Ansah at pick 126. At pick 133, the Seattle Seahawks selected SS Kam Chancellor. Would Chancellor have solved the Cowboys safety issues for the next 5-10 years had they picked him instead? The Premiere UDFA Find: The Cowboys didn’t take a strong safety in the draft BUT they were able to nab a starting level safety in Barry Church in undrafted free agency. Church was a reliable dependable guy on the back end of the defense who also turned into a comp pick (that the Cowboys squandered on QB Mike White out of Western Kentucky) when he left for big money in Jacksonville. The “What If?”: The Cowboys gave up their 1st and 3rd round pick to move up and snag Dez Bryant. Let’s pose a different scenario. What if the Cowboys stick around at pick 27 and take CB Devin McCourty (who is still playing at a pretty high-ish level today), still move up for LB Sean Lee in round 2 and with their lost 3rd round pick, the Cowboys turn around and grab LB Navarro Bowman who Wade Phillips was smitten with ahead of Sean Lee? The Cowboys could’ve boasted one of the leagues best linebacker units in the middle (with Bradie James relegated to back up duty) and would’ve had a long term secondary stud in what has and continues to be a spot the Cowboys struggle to find answers for. I’m not sure if I’d prefer that BUT it’s worth discussing for gits and shiggles.
