We've been at the bunker for a few weeks now. After the initial shock, people are finally settling down and adjusting. When the bombing began, we hid. Every week we moved to a new place. We gathered supplies and weapons to protect ourselves. But, we were luckier than most, our family was still together. The launching of the Future Hope programme led to my sister and I being snatched away from our parents and thrown onto the back of a truck with a few other people. On the way to the bunker, I realised I didn't have any time to panic. Since I was 18, I was one of the oldest there and barely made the cut, but I was glad I got to protect my baby sister. Almost two weeks, we spent on that truck. And on the fourteenth night, I heard my sister singing. But when the singing stopped, I-

They took her from me. They made me watch as they tortured her, ridiculed her. They killed her and made me watch. I was the only one that survived the raid. Somehow I made it to the bunker.

The bunker was chaotic at first. Within the first week 10 of them pulled the rope. A few others were forcibly removed. Again, I was lucky, I actually got a bunk. But things seem to be falling into routine now.

I'm heading back from breakfast - a bowl of soup and a bun - when I notice a little girl huddled on the floor of the bunker. She's leaning back against the concrete walls and trying her hardest to stop crying. She must've been one of the last in because there's no bunk, just a few blankets and a bag of food.

I sit down next to her and she regains her composure. 'Why are you here', she asks. I keep quiet. She was a child and didn't know very well how to ration, but what she had been doing was impressive. I can tell she's hungry so I give her the bun I snagged from breakfast. She looks up at me with sparkling eyes at the gesture. The look immediately turns to confusion and suspicion. She asked why I would ever give her my bread.

'I don't want you to starve", I replied.

"Why?"

"You remind me of someone."

I smiled at her. A genuine smile I hadn't smiled in months. And she relaxed. She ate.
