A/N: I made this with the Valkyrie! Reader has an older sister themed after Brunhilde/Valkyrie from Marvel, since that is practically owned by Disney. Anyways, now I hope you enjoy this piece, it took me a while of brainstorming to write, lol.

my hot take is that studio ghibli’s 2008 movie “ponyo” is extremely queer and specifically trans coded for a number of reasons. not even touching on the parents (ponyo’s dad looks like he’s wearing drag and is shorter than her mom, her mom is a beautiful sea goddess who alternates between being 7 and 700 feet tall, and sosuke’s mom looks like she had a steady girlfriend in college) ponyo’s whole storyline is that she decides that instead of being a fish named brunhilde she wants to change her name to ponyo and become a human to live out her life with sosuke on the surface. And it’s technically a little mermaid-esque love story in that sense, but they’re five years old, so what the story is really about is sosuke and the humans accepting ponyo for who she was and ponyo’s family accepting her for who she is becoming. And in the process ponyo grows out her hair and starts wearing dresses and very excitedly talks about how she wants to be a girl instead of a fish and while yes her ‘transition’ is technically a magical blood pact where she turns into a chicken for a little bit it is also really beautiful to watch how the people around her take in the facets of her identity and accept them and her for who she is, with the pressure of acceptance by the end of the movie not being on ponyo herself (to make others accept and respect her) but on those around her (especially the adults but also sosuke) to understand, love, and accept her for who she is without bias or judgement. anyways ponyo is a trans icon (and so are her parents but that’s a different post) and she deserves it

Willow month: favourite arc/character development

From Brunhilde to Dove to Elora, hers was a fascinating and lovely character arc. In some ways it’s pretty standard main character stuff: discoveries about their past, a destiny to deny or embrace, responsibilities to shoulder, etc etc. but I deeply enjoyed the way they still managed to make Elora’s journey to embracing who she is and what that stands for fun and unique and beautiful (also, icon by @hgstuff)

She was already brave and plucky right at the start, fully willing to risk danger for those she loves and stand up to some pretty domineering individuals. Her “I’m phenomenal” in regards to her cooking made me fall in love with her. But when she finds out she’s Elora Danan, she has to wrangle with her own self esteem, her changing dynamics with the other characters on the quest, and her own relationship to magic, which is an integral part of her but has been hidden and buried and forgotten for too long (I loved how they visually represented this with the way her red hair comes back in across the series). She has to think outside the box, find ways to fulfil her destiny and achieve her aims whilst still staying true to herself and to her own principles. Watching her come into her own was incredibly satisfying

Have you read record of ragnarok?

Yeah, it's a fun, non-brainer series.

It has some interesting interpretations of the various mythologies and religions, and the gory fights can be pretty entertaining.

It's basically something you can enjoy without thinking too much.

Brunhilde is a fun, morally ambiguous and ruthless "Big Good" character.

Some might claim she's "waifu material" because she's pretty, but I love her for her insanity and the MANY crazy facial expressions she makes thorough the series:

See I don't think the problem with women replacing men exactly. After all you could make the exact same argument about characters like Miles Morales or Sam Wilson. Why black version of white characters? Don't black characters deserves their own original characters? But the thing is a lot of Sam and Miles story is about the struggles of filling in the title and living up too the name. It's the strength of their stories is making the title their.

Thing is to remember is MCU is an adaptive work, pretty much none of the characters are original.

But let's get in what some of the problems with the

Valkyrie, first appearance December 1970

Val, replacing Thor as king? Honestly I think the problem is more Indicative of how under written both her character and the Asgard mythos are. Her name is never given on screen, it's Brunhilde in the comics and Runa is the name given to new valkyrie character based on Tessa. Nothing is really done with her character. What should be Thor's arc learning to handle the weight of this responsibility is tossed aside so he can screw around and never grow as a character and Val is just bored with is.

Yelena Belova first appearance March 1999

The problem is more Nat's poor treatment. Yelena is great in my book. The love she has for her sister is well done and I have my fingers crossed for her character arc in settling in to her role as the official black widow.

Kate Bishop First appearance April 2005

Kate's story is really well done. Really if all the guys where given as much respect as Clint and gals allowed to be as fully realized as Kate I don't think there would be complaint worth listening to.

Jane Foster first appearance July 1962, as Thor October 2014

She didn't ended replacing him and what think the core of the problem is more complicated than "Oh, no! A girl Thor." Actually this was a lot wrong with how her character was handled, but I'll get in another post.

Carol Danvers first appearance March 1968

New leader of the Avengers? Maybe, I mean that's not really the same as others characters being "replaced". Who even was the leader before, Tony or Steve. I guess she could start her own team, but if Carol does become the leader of the Avengers it's not a disservice not to have her own original role just for her.

Shuri first appearance May 2005

Like Kate, Shuri taking on the mantle was really respectfully done. Granted this change was do to real life tragedy for replacement happening. This one is hard to talk about, whether you see at as respectful or exploitive of Boseman is up to debate.

She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters first February 1980

I think part of the problem is that she is being viewed as a replacement. Like, none complained really at Gwen being Spider-Woman, nothing wrong with distaff counterparts are kind of a stable of the super hero genre. The lady version of the male hero can be great characters and grow to be iconic on their own. Like Barbara Gordon, Like Spider-Gwen and Like She-Hulk. Honestly when just the logo came out and people complainasking, why do we need a girl Hulk, I think it was done in bad faith.

The problem with She-Hulk attorney at law is you have a character complaining about cat calling to a character who tried to commit suicide. "It's so hard to woman". The problem isn't replacing a man with a woman, the problem isn't She-Hulk isn't an original character. It's the disrespect it has for the man and the lack of real character for the woman. So what, if Jen had her own title that doesn't change any of the poor writing.

Change Sylvie to Amora, she's still a terrible character. Yeah, no more icky self-cest, but she's still toxic, mean and underwritten. I think the real problem with Sylvie being the female Loki is how the writers erase Loki's genderfluidy. The need to emphasize the with so many versions of a character only one is a woman, and that makes her special and better.

I think @punksweets original point of just get some late teens early twenty actor to be the new Loki was that the Kid Loki storyline was just more interesting than whatever Sylvie's character is. If it was a young pretty girl actor playing the new Loki, not as a variant but as a reborn younger Loki, there's still story opportunity there.

I don't care about Sylvie.

So the thing about the MCU, actors are going to get older and they're going to want to move on to other projects eventually. So the movies are going to have to move on to new characters and there are characters like Yelena, Sam and Kate who take up the mantle of previous heroes. All well and good. But despite the fact the MCU had a replacement for Loki basically gift wrapped for them they instead to focus on this new OC who isn't even called Loki.

They had kid/teen Loki right there free to use. All they had to hire some young pretty boy actor and say okay this is Loki now. The had plenty of story to pull from comics. And they still get profit off one their most popular character even after Tom is long gone. But instead we get Sylvie also screw you anyone who liked Amore or Sylvie Lushton you get this character instead.

Yeah it's a given that new actors and actresses have to replace the previous ones but when you take those 3 characters you mentioned (Yelena, Sam and Kate) and compare them to Sylvie they're so much better than her in every possible conceivable way.

Yelena has had a rough past too but she's so much more than that. She can be fierce and deadly when she wants to but she's also funny, loyal, independent, strong and vulnerable at the same time. She doesn't need to treat those around her like crap and when she realized she was wrong in the last ep of Hawkeye she stopped.

Sam has been around for longer so it's not fair to compare to the other two, although he was sidelined in his own show so he should open a club and invite Loki and Bucky to it. We still haven't seen too much from him though and hopefully in Cap4 we will but so far Sam is a fantastic character and a leader.

And Kate was a privileged girl who had an actual arc during the series, she never took the spotlight from Clint even though we knew the purpose of the series was to introduce her as his replacement and when they got to discuss their experiences they never belittled one another, they both shared their pain and grief.

But Sylvie... we know nothing about her. She has no arc whatsoever, she's as angry and manipulative in ep6 as she is in ep2, the writers chose to tell us instead of showing us how the trauma affected her and she was constantly compared to Loki and put above him because they couldn't figure out a way to make her strong and powerful without nerfing the title character.

So it's not that they don't know how to pass the torch to the new characters without disrespecting the old ones, it's that some of them are purposely treated well and with respect (Nat in her movie, Clint in the show) and others are dragged through the mud (Sam, Bucky, Loki).
