Contextual Studies lecture with Ally Standing
Ally Standing - Lecturer in Contextual Studies at School of Visual Communication
- Taking notes is crucial, helps cement information in your mind and form connected ideas and arguments
- Engage with appropriate sources, think independently and critically, articulate ideas in verbal and written forms.
Psychogeography
- Critical urban walking, “how places feel”
- It is an academic and artistic crossover lying somewhere between cartography, art, geography, psychology, social history and urban aesthetics.
- Term comes from 1955 but the practice stretches back much further
- “The study of precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organised or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.” - Guy Debord, 1955, An Introduction to a Critique of Urban Geography
- “A whole toy box full of playful, inventive strategies for exploring cities... just about anything that takes pedestrians off their predictable paths and jolts them into a new awareness of the urban landscape.” - Joseph Hart, 2004, A New Way of Walking
Standing’s work with Birmingham’s iconic landmarks
King Kong statue 1972, Birmingham Manzoni Gardens
For 6 months in 1972 the statue was exhibited in Manzoni Gardens in Birmingham as part of national competition for young artists, with the chosen sculptures being distributed to major UK cities. It was met with divided opinions and a campaign for it to be taken down. The city council decided not to purchase it after the exhibition and it got sold to King Kong Car Co by Five Ways. The statue was then sold to a market in Edinburgh and painted pink, before finally ending up in a car park in Penrith. It has since been re-exhibited in Leeds.
Standing used the Birmingham Library archives to further research ‘The Manzoni Monster’ and create art around it, including a window display for Selfridges in 2015.
When I went to further research ‘the Manzoni Monster’, I found I was using an article written by Standing for Brumpic -  https://www.brumpic.com/manzoni-monster-ally-standing .

Birmingham Central Library
Birmingham Central Library was opened in 1974 and was the main city library until 2013, whereupon it was replaced by the Library of Birmingham and demolished in 2016. It was built by John Madlin, a Birmingham based architect, in the brutalist style as part of an ambitious new development project by Birmingham City Council. The project ran out of money mid way through building, leaving the original utopian haven to become “just piss soaked concrete.” It became a homeless hotspot and the original stilt-like structure was covered up by glass panels and turned into shop units.
The building gained architectural praise for being an icon of British brutalism, however Birmingham City Council blocked the building from being listed by English Heritage twice until 2016, when it was demolished. Between 2010 and 2011 it was the second-most visited library in England, seeing 1,197,350 visitors that year.
I find this story particularly interesting as despite growing up with my mother in Norfolk, I was born in Birmingham and lived here until I was four. My father and two half siblings remained in the city, meaning I would visit multiple times a year but was never particularly involved with the city and its history. I find this perspective of Birmingham fascinating, as it is both home and entirely alien to me, a key point in why I moved here for university. Although artistically I find it hard to connect with architecture, I found this part of Standing’s lecture especially interesting because I remember driving past the building site for the Library of Birmingham every time I visited, with each journey seeing it closer and closer to completion, and yet I always (and still do) thought it was hideous. It became a joke with my father every time about how ugly the circular rings and bold colour choice on the outside were. Although I don’t remember the Central Library, it captivates me how crucial Birmingham’s libraries have been to my childhood memories and how landmarks of the city have such personal connections to my life.

Spaghetti Junction
Standing wanted to do a collaborative piece about Gravely Hill Interchange (Spaghetti Junction) but struggled to find a contextual link. Along with her collaborator for the project, Bruno Grilo, she began speaking to a man under the junction one day when walking there and had a conversation with him about the area. He had moved there 40 years prior to the closest house to the roads, and could see and hear the cars constantly. He decided to make a sanctuary for himself by planting a rainforest in his front garden, aptly naming it ‘The Land of Green Silences’.

Critical thinking
Critical thinking is defined as “the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement.”
Everything which has been designed or made reveals/conceals many different contexts and stories.

This is my print ‘Library Reflected’. Right at the end of the printing process on this one, there is a rather fiddly series of key blocks that show the library reflection. It is a bit of a tense moment because a lot of time goes into getting the print to this point and making sure that the eight small engraved plates are all inked and registered correctly is no mean feat with slightly wobbly hands. Anyway this one is just what I’m after. #10 in the edition, i will list it for sale later today on my website £150 unframed with free P&P. #birminghamlibrary #birminghamrep #get_imprinted #imprinted_vids #reflection #visitbirmingham #hellobrum #ilovebrum #brumpic #birminghamlife #brumlife #printmaker #reliefprintmaking #birminghamart #viewsofbirmingham #inkonblock #justprintmaking #printmakersofinstagram #printmakingstudio #engraving #keyblock https://www.instagram.com/p/BxwpD2djn4-/?igshid=1syc8bjydoi4r
