Five Things, Saturday, August 5th
Some thoughts on A.I., Sinead O’Connor, Marvin Gaye, Vini Reilly, Serge Gainsbourg and The Parsons/White B-Bender.
THE INTRONow we’re all getting fully signed up to the future — it’s Philip K. Dick’s world after all, we just live in it — this week, Five Things touches on A.I., a spooked and possessed Marvin Gaye song, a world of music newly discovered, a video that is so French it should be required viewing at Customs and an extraordinary guitar modification. The saddest news was the passing of Sinead…

A-T-3 078 Durutti Column - Another Setting
The same core members as those that played on LC, Vini Reilly and his frequent musical partner percussionist Bruce Mitchell, with Simon Topping (ACR, Quando Quango) playing trumpet and Maunagh Fleming cor anglais
A cover of Hoagy Carmichael's I Get Along Without You Very Well is released as a non-album single with Prayer which is the opening track from Another Setting on the b side. The video seems very appropriate considering the snow we've been having

Ok so you probably know this already, but there’s a behind the scenes documentary of Top Gun (1986) and it features nearly all of the actors and Tony Scott and others discussing the making of the film. See Part 1 and Part 2 on YouTube, the videos are by link only.
In part 1 of the documentary, Tony Scott mentions that a big inspiration for the overall look of movie came from a book of photography by a man named Bruce Weber. And Tony Scott specifies this picture below as a big part of his vision because one of the models looked just like Val Kilmer, one looked just like Tom Cruise, and the last one was a jock-Rick Rossovich type.

And I just want to say that everything makes much more sense knowing this fact like—

Okay so shirtless, hot, fit men. Checks out. Looks good—

Look at these besties hanging out! You ever have have a slumber party with your bros?

Woah— Is it getting hot in here or is it just them???

Nope. Definitely them.

Renee’s birthday.
From “Happy Birthday Two You…” from Detective Comics #747 (August 2000), written by Greg Rucka, art by William Rosado and Steve Mitchell, letters by Todd Klein.
These excerpts omit glimpses into Renee’s life while she was still in the closet, and the heavy weight she carries in both her personal and professional lives, which makes her moment of happiness at the end even more satisfying. Read the whole issue if you can find it.
